Pastor James Rafferty. 00:01:36.12\00:01:38.33 Hi, Shelley. 00:01:38.36\00:01:39.69 It is great to be here this morning. 00:01:39.73\00:01:41.06 We're glad you're here. 00:01:41.10\00:01:42.43 And, Jill Morikone, my dear sister. 00:01:42.46\00:01:44.73 Thank you, Shelley. Excited about the study today. 00:01:44.77\00:01:46.84 Me too. 00:01:46.87\00:01:48.20 And we have Pastor John Dinzey. 00:01:48.24\00:01:51.01 It's a blessing to be here for me as well. 00:01:51.04\00:01:52.94 Thank you. We're glad you're here. 00:01:52.97\00:01:55.31 Jill, would you like to have our prayer? 00:01:55.34\00:01:56.68 Sure. 00:01:56.71\00:01:58.05 Holy Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, 00:01:58.08\00:01:59.95 grateful for the gift of Your Word 00:01:59.98\00:02:01.75 and the gift of Your Spirit 00:02:01.78\00:02:03.25 and we ask just now, 00:02:03.28\00:02:04.92 would You open up our minds and hearts 00:02:04.95\00:02:07.16 to receive what You have for us 00:02:07.19\00:02:09.32 and that we could hear and obey 00:02:09.36\00:02:11.79 and we thank You in Jesus' name. 00:02:11.83\00:02:13.63 Amen. Amen. 00:02:13.66\00:02:15.16 I love that prayer hear and obey. 00:02:15.20\00:02:17.37 That's what it means when the Bible says here. 00:02:17.40\00:02:19.73 Well, lesson eight, we are studying Jesus, 00:02:19.77\00:02:22.34 the Mediator of the New Covenant. 00:02:22.37\00:02:24.44 Let me read our memory text. 00:02:24.47\00:02:26.31 This is actually from the English Standard Version, 00:02:26.34\00:02:29.71 Hebrews 8:6, 00:02:29.74\00:02:32.08 "But as it is Christ has obtained a ministry 00:02:32.11\00:02:36.55 that is much more excellent than the old 00:02:36.58\00:02:40.06 as the covenant He mediates is better, 00:02:40.09\00:02:44.33 since it is enacted on better promises." 00:02:44.36\00:02:49.13 Let me tell you something, God cannot sin. 00:02:49.16\00:02:51.87 Because God is love and sin is the... 00:02:51.90\00:02:56.27 or love is the absence of sin. 00:02:56.30\00:02:59.51 The penalty for sin has always been death, 00:02:59.54\00:03:03.78 God is a just God. 00:03:03.81\00:03:05.51 He is a God who is merciful 00:03:05.55\00:03:10.42 but He set the penalty for sin as death 00:03:10.45\00:03:13.96 because He planned to pay the penalty. 00:03:13.99\00:03:17.56 The everlasting covenant is found in Revelation 13:8. 00:03:17.59\00:03:22.70 "Jesus, the Lamb who was slain 00:03:22.73\00:03:25.53 from the foundation of the world." 00:03:25.57\00:03:28.94 And Hebrews 13:20 says, 00:03:28.97\00:03:31.21 "His blood is the blood of the eternal covenant." 00:03:31.24\00:03:36.81 When God told Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden 00:03:36.85\00:03:39.88 in Genesis 3:15, 00:03:39.91\00:03:41.68 He says, "Hey, I'm going to put enmity 00:03:41.72\00:03:45.15 between the serpent and the seed of the woman." 00:03:45.19\00:03:49.69 That was pointing to Jesus Christ, 00:03:49.72\00:03:52.33 the coming Messiah. 00:03:52.36\00:03:53.70 So the entire Bible is just the progressive unfolding 00:03:53.73\00:03:59.13 of the everlasting covenant. 00:03:59.17\00:04:00.97 Each covenant builds on the next 00:04:01.00\00:04:03.94 and it shows a little more revelation, 00:04:03.97\00:04:06.37 but the culmination of the revelation 00:04:06.41\00:04:09.34 of God's plan of redemption 00:04:09.38\00:04:12.41 was the incarnation. 00:04:12.45\00:04:14.72 God stepped out of heaven and became a man. 00:04:14.75\00:04:17.75 In Philippians 2:5-8 we see that, 00:04:17.79\00:04:20.96 I'm not going to take time to read it 00:04:20.99\00:04:23.09 but it says God came down. 00:04:23.12\00:04:25.89 He condescended to take on human form. 00:04:25.93\00:04:29.53 How exciting that is and He lived a perfect life 00:04:29.56\00:04:33.23 but obedience to the commandments. 00:04:33.27\00:04:35.30 He became the covenant Son of God. 00:04:35.34\00:04:38.37 He lived this perfect life, 00:04:38.41\00:04:40.38 that He might impute His righteousness to us. 00:04:40.41\00:04:43.68 And then He died for us on the cross. 00:04:43.71\00:04:46.08 Hebrews 10:5-9 says, 00:04:46.11\00:04:48.58 "Therefore, when He came into the world, 00:04:48.62\00:04:50.29 He said: 'Sacrifice and offering 00:04:50.32\00:04:51.92 You did not desire, 00:04:51.95\00:04:53.49 but a body You have prepared for Me. 00:04:53.52\00:04:56.46 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin 00:04:56.49\00:05:00.40 You had no pleasure.'" 00:05:00.43\00:05:02.96 See every sacrifice under the Old Covenant, 00:05:03.00\00:05:06.13 the Book of the Law, pointed to Christ. 00:05:06.17\00:05:09.10 It was just symbolic but then Hebrews 10:7 says, 00:05:09.14\00:05:13.98 "Then I said, 'Behold, 00:05:14.01\00:05:15.98 I have come in the volume of the book, 00:05:16.01\00:05:19.71 it is written of Me, this is the Messiah, Jesus. 00:05:19.75\00:05:23.79 I have come to do Your will, O God.'" 00:05:23.82\00:05:28.16 I love the Sabbath School quarterly 00:05:28.19\00:05:31.13 and they quoted from the Seventh-day Adventist 00:05:31.16\00:05:34.10 Bible Commentary, 00:05:34.13\00:05:36.36 referring to a volume 7 00:05:36.40\00:05:39.10 even, page 460, Psalm 40, 00:05:39.13\00:05:41.64 referring to the Messiah's desire 00:05:41.67\00:05:45.37 to render to God, total obedience. 00:05:45.41\00:05:49.38 It says, "Behold, I've come, 00:05:49.41\00:05:50.75 in the scroll of the book it is written of Me, 00:05:50.78\00:05:52.61 I delight to do your will, O my God, 00:05:52.65\00:05:55.12 Your laws written within my heart." 00:05:55.15\00:05:57.19 That's Psalm. 00:05:57.22\00:05:58.55 I'll talk straight in a minute. 00:05:58.59\00:06:00.29 Psalm 40:7-8. 00:06:00.32\00:06:02.66 And what does He do in the New Covenant? 00:06:02.69\00:06:04.49 He writes the law in our hearts. 00:06:04.53\00:06:07.33 It says, in the original context, 00:06:07.36\00:06:09.73 this phrase to do Your will 00:06:09.76\00:06:12.57 described moral obedience to the will of God. 00:06:12.60\00:06:17.21 The author of Hebrews uses the phrase to show 00:06:17.24\00:06:20.88 that the sacrifice of Christ 00:06:20.91\00:06:23.85 fulfilled the will of God in providing 00:06:23.88\00:06:27.02 an acceptable atonement, 00:06:27.05\00:06:29.98 which the animal sacrifices had not. 00:06:30.02\00:06:34.96 And It's interesting, all those animal sacrifices, 00:06:34.99\00:06:38.59 the whole sanctuary system was explaining, 00:06:38.63\00:06:43.90 in a visual form, 00:06:43.93\00:06:48.20 the whole plan of salvation. 00:06:48.24\00:06:50.31 So Hebrews 10:8-9, 00:06:50.34\00:06:53.11 "Previously saying, 'Sacrifice and offerings, 00:06:53.14\00:06:56.38 burnt offerings, and offerings for sin 00:06:56.41\00:06:58.21 You did not desire, 00:06:58.25\00:07:00.05 nor had pleasure in them, ' 00:07:00.08\00:07:02.72 which are offered according to the law," 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.29 that's the Law of Moses, "then He said, 00:07:05.32\00:07:08.52 'I have come to do Your will, O God.' 00:07:08.56\00:07:10.99 And He takes away 00:07:11.03\00:07:13.53 the first the Law of Moses, 00:07:13.56\00:07:17.17 the Book of the Law 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.17 that He may establish the second.'" 00:07:19.20\00:07:22.37 When Christ died as our sacrifice, 00:07:22.40\00:07:25.54 our substitutionary sacrifice, 00:07:25.57\00:07:28.11 He canceled the penalty of death 00:07:28.14\00:07:30.21 for those who will come to Him and accept Him as Savior 00:07:30.25\00:07:34.12 and He was resurrected to the same glory 00:07:34.15\00:07:37.39 that He had with the Father before His incarnation. 00:07:37.42\00:07:41.69 So now He serves as a mediator 00:07:41.72\00:07:44.03 of this New Covenant and new means renewed, 00:07:44.06\00:07:49.10 it's new in quality, 00:07:49.13\00:07:51.17 it's just a continuation of the everlasting covenant. 00:07:51.20\00:07:54.80 Now He serves as our High Priest. 00:07:54.84\00:07:57.64 Our quarterly says Jesus embodied 00:07:57.67\00:08:00.61 the obedience of the New Covenant. 00:08:00.64\00:08:03.51 He is our example. 00:08:03.55\00:08:04.95 We've been saved not only because of His death, 00:08:04.98\00:08:09.12 but because of His perfect obedience. 00:08:09.15\00:08:12.25 So moving right along quickly. 00:08:12.29\00:08:15.22 Sunday is The Need of the New Covenant. 00:08:15.26\00:08:18.53 Let me read Hebrews 7:11-19... 00:08:18.56\00:08:22.20 Here's what the Bible says, 00:08:25.67\00:08:27.80 "Therefore, if perfection, 00:08:27.84\00:08:31.21 were through the Levitical priesthood, 00:08:31.24\00:08:34.41 for under it the people received the law," 00:08:34.44\00:08:36.75 he's speaking of the Law of Moses, 00:08:36.78\00:08:38.95 "what further need was there that another priest 00:08:38.98\00:08:41.78 should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, 00:08:41.82\00:08:44.49 and not be called 00:08:44.52\00:08:45.99 according to the order of Aaron?" 00:08:46.02\00:08:49.36 So we've studied this in past, you look back for that one. 00:08:49.39\00:08:53.29 For the priesthood being changed of necessity, 00:08:53.33\00:08:56.70 there is also a change of the law. 00:08:56.73\00:08:59.43 And he's speaking again, from the Law of Moses, 00:08:59.47\00:09:02.97 Book of the Law to this. 00:09:03.00\00:09:04.77 "For He who of whom 00:09:04.81\00:09:07.64 these things are spoken belongs to another tribe 00:09:07.68\00:09:10.21 from which no man has officiated at the altar. 00:09:10.25\00:09:14.78 For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, 00:09:14.82\00:09:18.95 of which tribe Moses spoke 00:09:18.99\00:09:21.76 nothing concerning the priesthood, 00:09:21.79\00:09:24.13 and it is yet far more evident 00:09:24.16\00:09:26.16 if in the likeness of Melchizedek 00:09:26.19\00:09:28.20 there arises another priest, 00:09:28.23\00:09:30.40 who has come not according to the law 00:09:30.43\00:09:33.10 of a fleshly commandment, 00:09:33.13\00:09:34.50 but according to the power of an endless life. 00:09:34.54\00:09:38.94 For he testifies: 'You are a priest forever 00:09:38.97\00:09:41.41 according to the order of Melchizedek.' 00:09:41.44\00:09:43.81 For on the one hand 00:09:43.85\00:09:45.88 there is an annulling of the former commandment, 00:09:45.91\00:09:49.12 talking about this Levitical priesthood, 00:09:49.15\00:09:51.42 because of its weakness, and its unprofitableness, 00:09:51.45\00:09:55.29 for the law made nothing perfect, 00:09:55.32\00:09:58.06 on the other hand, 00:09:58.09\00:09:59.43 there is the bringing in of a better hope, 00:09:59.46\00:10:02.76 through which we draw near to God.'" 00:10:02.80\00:10:06.00 The Old Covenant is the Book of the Law, 00:10:06.03\00:10:09.94 it was ratified with blood. 00:10:09.97\00:10:13.17 When Moses built the altar, 00:10:13.21\00:10:15.01 it is given on the basis of the Levitical priesthood, 00:10:15.04\00:10:19.08 those priests served as mediators 00:10:19.11\00:10:21.02 between God and men, 00:10:21.05\00:10:22.58 but the change of the priesthood 00:10:22.62\00:10:26.35 implies a change of the law of the priesthood. 00:10:26.39\00:10:30.26 Jesus inaugurated a New Covenant, 00:10:30.29\00:10:33.13 a Renewed Covenant, ratified it with His own blood. 00:10:33.16\00:10:37.67 So the Old Covenant ministry, the priesthood, 00:10:37.70\00:10:41.84 the ministry of sacrifice, and feast, 00:10:41.87\00:10:44.71 and all of those things could not provide perfection, 00:10:44.74\00:10:48.98 could not provide total cleansing from sin, 00:10:49.01\00:10:51.85 or direct access to God. 00:10:51.88\00:10:55.22 So what we have is, according to our study guide, 00:10:55.25\00:11:00.66 let me quote this, it says, 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.06 "The Levitical ministry and services of the tabernacle 00:11:02.09\00:11:05.49 were designed to protect them from idolatry, 00:11:05.53\00:11:08.60 and also to point them to Jesus' future ministry. 00:11:08.63\00:11:13.34 Hebrews stresses that the sacrifices 00:11:13.37\00:11:17.91 were a shadow of the good things to come. 00:11:17.94\00:11:21.14 We find that in Hebrews 10:1. 00:11:21.18\00:11:23.91 So the reason 00:11:23.95\00:11:26.35 there's the need of a new covenant 00:11:26.38\00:11:29.18 is because the Old Covenant was symbolic. 00:11:29.22\00:11:32.52 It just was pointing to Jesus, 00:11:32.55\00:11:35.19 He is the mediator of the Renewed Covenant. 00:11:35.22\00:11:38.73 Let me read quickly from Galatians Chapter 3. 00:11:38.76\00:11:42.10 This is a chapter that many people get confused 00:11:42.13\00:11:45.07 and I want to show you something. 00:11:45.10\00:11:46.77 Galatians 3:10, says, 00:11:46.80\00:11:50.54 "For as many as are of the works of the law 00:11:50.57\00:11:53.91 are under a curse." 00:11:53.94\00:11:55.44 Now, most people say, see, 00:11:55.48\00:11:56.85 you don't have to keep the Ten Commandments. 00:11:56.88\00:11:58.58 That's the works of the law. 00:11:58.61\00:11:59.95 No, no, you're gonna see in context, 00:11:59.98\00:12:02.68 he's talking about the Law of Moses, 00:12:02.72\00:12:05.42 the Book of the Law, 00:12:05.45\00:12:07.72 what God spoke to Moses and Moses wrote down. 00:12:07.76\00:12:11.33 Now let's look, he says, 00:12:11.36\00:12:14.20 "As many as are the works of the law are under a curse, 00:12:14.23\00:12:16.50 for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone 00:12:16.53\00:12:19.33 who does not continue in all things 00:12:19.37\00:12:21.97 which are written in the Book of the Law." 00:12:22.00\00:12:27.58 And that's Deuteronomy. 00:12:27.61\00:12:29.98 And this is a direct quote from Deuteronomy, 00:12:30.01\00:12:32.71 "To do them, but there is no one justified 00:12:32.75\00:12:35.65 by the law in the sight of God is evident for it 00:12:35.68\00:12:39.02 since the just shall live by faith. 00:12:39.05\00:12:41.49 Yet the Law of Moses, law is not of faith, 00:12:41.52\00:12:44.36 but the man who does them shall live by them. 00:12:44.39\00:12:47.53 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, 00:12:47.56\00:12:51.47 having become a curse for us, for it is written, 00:12:51.50\00:12:54.34 'Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree, 00:12:54.37\00:12:56.77 that the blessing of Abraham, 00:12:56.81\00:12:58.57 the everlasting covenant of salvation 00:12:58.61\00:13:00.88 by grace through faith 00:13:00.91\00:13:02.24 and righteousness by faith 00:13:02.28\00:13:03.88 might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, 00:13:03.91\00:13:06.61 that we might receive the promise 00:13:06.65\00:13:09.15 of the Spirit through faith." 00:13:09.18\00:13:11.29 And in Galatians 3:23-24. 00:13:11.32\00:13:15.06 Here we are, same context is speaking 00:13:15.09\00:13:17.89 of the Book of the Law, 00:13:17.93\00:13:19.59 the Old Covenant just served as a tutor. 00:13:19.63\00:13:23.00 Galatians 3:23, "But before faith came, 00:13:23.03\00:13:26.43 we were kept under guard by the law kept for the faith, 00:13:26.47\00:13:31.37 which would be afterward revealed. 00:13:31.41\00:13:33.84 Therefore the law was our tutor, 00:13:33.88\00:13:36.11 to bring us to Christ 00:13:36.14\00:13:37.58 that we might be justified by faith." 00:13:37.61\00:13:40.12 So God's law, the Old Covenant, 00:13:40.15\00:13:42.18 the Book of the Law, the Sabbath School Panel says, 00:13:42.22\00:13:46.05 even the 10, our study says, even the Ten Commandments, 00:13:46.09\00:13:50.16 as good and is perfect as they are 00:13:50.19\00:13:52.09 cannot provide salvation. 00:13:52.13\00:13:54.20 They provide a perfect standard of righteousness, 00:13:54.23\00:13:56.56 but they do not provide righteousness. 00:13:56.60\00:13:59.23 Any more than looking in a mirror 00:13:59.27\00:14:01.20 can erase the wrinkles of age, don't we wish? 00:14:01.24\00:14:05.21 For perfect righteousness, 00:14:05.24\00:14:07.24 we need Jesus as our substitute. 00:14:07.28\00:14:10.18 We need Jesus as the mediator of the New Covenant. 00:14:10.21\00:14:15.35 Thank you, Shelley. 00:14:15.38\00:14:16.72 You know, it's amazing that 00:14:16.75\00:14:18.09 as you talk about this particular lesson, 00:14:18.12\00:14:19.85 we're kind of piggybacking on each other. 00:14:19.89\00:14:21.99 It's kind of like, 00:14:22.02\00:14:23.36 I think of this lesson as a flight of stairs. 00:14:23.39\00:14:25.93 Yes. 00:14:25.96\00:14:27.30 We're on the same step, 00:14:27.33\00:14:28.66 which is going one level to the next, 00:14:28.70\00:14:30.03 to the next, to the next. 00:14:30.07\00:14:31.40 And what you've said, 00:14:31.43\00:14:32.77 I'll be reiterating some of those things 00:14:32.80\00:14:34.14 because my Monday lesson is called New and Renewed, 00:14:34.17\00:14:36.60 New and Renewed. 00:14:36.64\00:14:38.81 Now the promise of the New Covenant, 00:14:38.84\00:14:40.24 and I think Shelley alluded to this 00:14:40.28\00:14:42.04 refers back to the Book of Jeremiah. 00:14:42.08\00:14:44.75 Jeremiah looked as one of the prophets of God. 00:14:44.78\00:14:47.68 As a matter of fact, my wife and I are reading 00:14:47.72\00:14:49.12 through the Book of Jeremiah together, 00:14:49.15\00:14:51.02 and it's a wonderful excursion. 00:14:51.05\00:14:52.89 And Jeremiah was a strong prophet of God, 00:14:52.92\00:14:56.59 we're looking back at the writings of Jeremiah. 00:14:56.62\00:14:59.56 We go to Jeremiah 31:31-34 00:14:59.59\00:15:05.23 to look back at the promise that God made 00:15:05.27\00:15:07.80 for a New Covenant. 00:15:07.84\00:15:09.17 There were two reasons 00:15:09.20\00:15:10.54 that the New Covenant was necessary. 00:15:10.57\00:15:12.31 One was as Shelley pointed out 00:15:12.34\00:15:14.58 and the Bible points out in Hebrews, 00:15:14.61\00:15:16.21 the blood of bulls and goats could not perfect anyone. 00:15:16.24\00:15:19.58 But secondly, the people began to look at 00:15:19.61\00:15:23.22 the efficacy of the sacrifice. 00:15:23.25\00:15:26.29 They got locked in on the symbols, 00:15:26.32\00:15:28.69 and they were missing what the symbols meant. 00:15:28.72\00:15:31.49 So they were looking for, 00:15:31.53\00:15:32.93 you know, as the requirement were, 00:15:32.96\00:15:34.70 lambs without blemish and without spot, 00:15:34.73\00:15:36.40 and they thought, since I found a physical lamb 00:15:36.43\00:15:38.83 without blemish and without spot, 00:15:38.87\00:15:40.40 that was sufficient. 00:15:40.44\00:15:41.77 They were missing what it was pointing to. 00:15:41.80\00:15:43.97 They were missing the significance 00:15:44.01\00:15:45.84 of all of the symbols of the sanctuary services 00:15:45.87\00:15:49.01 and they were not looking forward 00:15:49.04\00:15:50.38 to the coming of Christ. 00:15:50.41\00:15:51.75 That's why you find when Jesus said in John, 00:15:51.78\00:15:54.18 I came to my own, my own did not receive me. 00:15:54.22\00:15:57.32 John the Baptist tried 00:15:57.35\00:16:00.46 to kickstart their brains by saying, 00:16:00.49\00:16:02.69 "Behold, the Lamb of God 00:16:02.72\00:16:05.06 that taketh away the sin of the world," 00:16:05.09\00:16:06.43 and they just couldn't get it 00:16:06.46\00:16:08.00 because they had gotten steeped in the symbolism. 00:16:08.03\00:16:11.17 That's why when he died, 00:16:11.20\00:16:12.83 he ended the ceremonial system so that he could say, 00:16:12.87\00:16:18.47 please don't impose this on the new converts, 00:16:18.51\00:16:21.94 because I have fulfilled all the requirements 00:16:21.98\00:16:24.51 of that particular law. 00:16:24.55\00:16:26.28 But Jeremiah is seeing the people looking over here, 00:16:26.31\00:16:29.92 rather than looking over there, looking at the lamb, 00:16:29.95\00:16:32.12 rather than remembering that 00:16:32.15\00:16:33.49 this means the Messiah is coming. 00:16:33.52\00:16:35.49 Jeremiah said these words to us, 00:16:35.52\00:16:37.16 Jeremiah 31:31-34. 00:16:37.19\00:16:40.40 "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, 00:16:40.43\00:16:43.97 when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel 00:16:44.00\00:16:46.27 and with the house of Judah 00:16:46.30\00:16:48.10 because Jesus is the lion of the tribe of Judah." 00:16:48.14\00:16:51.21 Verse 32, "Not according to the covenant 00:16:51.24\00:16:53.27 that I made with their fathers in the day, 00:16:53.31\00:16:55.91 that I took them by the hand 00:16:55.94\00:16:57.38 to lead them out of the land of Egypt." 00:16:57.41\00:17:00.05 My covenant which they broke 00:17:00.08\00:17:05.62 and you notice that he is saying 00:17:05.65\00:17:07.42 that the covenant was not at fault. 00:17:07.46\00:17:09.42 At that particular point, 00:17:09.46\00:17:10.79 He made a covenant with them, but they broke it. 00:17:10.83\00:17:13.56 He keeps on going. 00:17:13.60\00:17:15.60 "Though I was a husband to them, says the Lord," 00:17:15.63\00:17:20.24 verse 33, "but this is the covenant 00:17:20.27\00:17:22.87 that I will make with the house of Israel 00:17:22.90\00:17:24.24 after those days, 00:17:24.27\00:17:25.61 says the Lord. 00:17:25.64\00:17:26.98 I will put My law in their minds, 00:17:27.01\00:17:29.44 and write it on their hearts, 00:17:29.48\00:17:33.08 and I will be their God, 00:17:33.11\00:17:34.45 and they shall be My people. 00:17:34.48\00:17:35.82 No more shall every man teach his neighbor, 00:17:35.85\00:17:38.92 and every man his brother, saying, 00:17:38.95\00:17:40.66 'Know the Lord, for they all shall know Me, 00:17:40.69\00:17:43.86 from the least of them to the greatest of them, 00:17:43.89\00:17:46.29 says the Lord. 00:17:46.33\00:17:47.93 For I will forgive their iniquity, 00:17:47.96\00:17:50.03 and their sin I will remember no more." 00:17:50.07\00:17:52.43 So when we get down to Hebrews Chapter 8, 00:17:52.47\00:17:55.04 it's just a reiteration 00:17:55.07\00:17:56.44 of what the Prophet Jeremiah said 00:17:56.47\00:17:57.94 hundreds of years 00:17:57.97\00:17:59.31 before more than 1000 years earlier, 00:17:59.34\00:18:00.94 he made this statement. 00:18:00.98\00:18:02.31 So it should not have been new to the Jewish leaders 00:18:02.34\00:18:06.28 when the time came. 00:18:06.31\00:18:07.82 So when the Messiah came, 00:18:07.85\00:18:09.18 and He was identified as the Lamb slain 00:18:09.22\00:18:12.05 from the foundation, 00:18:12.09\00:18:13.42 they should have said, wait a minute, 00:18:13.46\00:18:14.86 didn't the prophet Jeremiah tell us 00:18:14.89\00:18:16.26 that's what's going to happen? 00:18:16.29\00:18:17.63 But they still missed it. 00:18:17.66\00:18:19.09 That's why it's important today when we think about worship. 00:18:19.13\00:18:23.30 Let us not worship-worship. 00:18:23.33\00:18:25.77 That's what's happening today in many of our churches. 00:18:25.80\00:18:27.50 We're worshipping worship, the feeling of worship, 00:18:27.54\00:18:30.57 we're trying to stimulate a feeling, 00:18:30.61\00:18:32.94 when in fact, what does the worship mean? 00:18:32.97\00:18:35.21 It even go so far, it says, 00:18:35.24\00:18:36.68 "Let us not worship the Sabbath. 00:18:36.71\00:18:38.38 Let us worship the Lord of the Sabbath." 00:18:38.41\00:18:40.55 The Sabbath is a symbol, a sign between God and us. 00:18:40.58\00:18:43.32 By honoring the day we are honoring the Lord. 00:18:43.35\00:18:47.69 But don't let the Sabbath 00:18:47.72\00:18:49.19 become the focus of your worship. 00:18:49.22\00:18:52.03 Let the Lord of the Sabbath on the day of the Sabbath 00:18:52.06\00:18:55.50 become the focal point of worship. 00:18:55.53\00:18:58.43 Let me go even further. 00:18:58.47\00:19:00.04 Don't worship your diet, worship the Lord 00:19:00.07\00:19:03.17 who wants you to be healthy. 00:19:03.20\00:19:04.94 You could see the same thing 00:19:04.97\00:19:06.41 that the Israelites did. 00:19:06.44\00:19:07.78 We can be in danger of doing the very same thing. 00:19:07.81\00:19:11.05 When the object 00:19:11.08\00:19:12.41 becomes the eclipse of the Lord, 00:19:12.45\00:19:15.42 then the object loses its significant, 00:19:15.45\00:19:17.62 and the Lord is lost in the entire exercise. 00:19:17.65\00:19:20.56 So don't worship-worship. 00:19:20.59\00:19:21.99 Don't worship the day, worship the Lord. 00:19:22.02\00:19:25.19 That's why the Psalmist David said, 00:19:25.23\00:19:26.76 "Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness." 00:19:26.80\00:19:29.63 The Sabbath is holy. 00:19:29.66\00:19:31.00 It's a beautiful holiness, 00:19:31.03\00:19:32.37 the way that the Lord wants us to live and eat 00:19:32.40\00:19:33.80 and dress is beautiful holiness, 00:19:33.84\00:19:35.77 but never allow those things 00:19:35.80\00:19:37.84 to eclipse the beautiful picture 00:19:37.87\00:19:39.91 of Jesus Christ. 00:19:39.94\00:19:41.78 You find in Hebrews. 00:19:41.81\00:19:43.61 Let's go to Hebrews Chapter 8. 00:19:43.65\00:19:44.98 I think you may have read this. 00:19:45.01\00:19:46.35 I'm not going to go to that one. 00:19:46.38\00:19:47.72 But I'm going to go to Hebrews 7:18-19, 00:19:47.75\00:19:51.19 as the Lord reiterates that the covenant itself 00:19:51.22\00:19:54.42 and here's why we have to be very vitally careful saying 00:19:54.46\00:19:57.29 that the covenant or the components 00:19:57.33\00:19:59.19 of the covenant were faulty 00:19:59.23\00:20:01.10 because the Lord appointed all the things 00:20:01.13\00:20:05.40 that they should do. 00:20:05.43\00:20:07.10 So if we say that the things 00:20:07.14\00:20:09.44 that He asked them to do are faulty, 00:20:09.47\00:20:10.81 then we're saying, well, we serve a faulty God. 00:20:10.84\00:20:13.14 They looked at those things 00:20:13.17\00:20:15.18 and forgot the one who appointed them. 00:20:15.21\00:20:18.41 Hebrews 7:18-19, 00:20:18.45\00:20:20.48 "For on the one hand there is an annulling 00:20:20.52\00:20:22.15 of the former commandment 00:20:22.18\00:20:23.52 because of its weakness and unprofitableness." 00:20:23.55\00:20:26.69 That means the lambs were weak, 00:20:26.72\00:20:29.36 all the bulls and goats and calves, 00:20:29.39\00:20:31.09 these are just fleshy ordinances, 00:20:31.13\00:20:33.70 but the true sacrifice was the coming spotless Lamb. 00:20:33.73\00:20:38.83 "For the law made nothing perfect, 00:20:38.87\00:20:41.34 on the other hand, 00:20:41.37\00:20:42.70 there is the bringing in of a better hope, 00:20:42.74\00:20:44.97 through which we draw near to God." 00:20:45.01\00:20:46.91 We draw near to God through Christ. 00:20:46.94\00:20:48.61 So let's look at some of the passages in the Bible 00:20:48.64\00:20:50.41 that talks about how beautiful 00:20:50.45\00:20:52.15 this New Covenant would be. 00:20:52.18\00:20:53.52 Let's go to... 00:20:53.55\00:20:54.88 First let's go to Isaiah 24:5, I want you to see this 00:20:54.92\00:20:58.42 because the covenant that was broken 00:20:58.45\00:21:00.16 by the Israelites 00:21:00.19\00:21:02.06 was, if you go further back than the Israelites, 00:21:02.09\00:21:05.86 you find that there was an earlier covenant 00:21:05.89\00:21:07.90 that was made that was broken 00:21:07.93\00:21:09.63 right on the heels of the flood. 00:21:09.66\00:21:11.97 The Lord established a rainbow in the heavens and said, 00:21:12.00\00:21:15.07 "This is the covenant I will make with mankind. 00:21:15.10\00:21:18.14 I will never destroy the world by a flood again." 00:21:18.17\00:21:21.28 What happened? 00:21:21.31\00:21:22.64 I know what he said, but we need to build us a tower 00:21:22.68\00:21:25.68 because I'm not sure if we could trust Him. 00:21:25.71\00:21:27.85 Salvation by works is always an earmark 00:21:27.88\00:21:31.15 of a false system of worship. 00:21:31.19\00:21:33.39 They built a tower to try to save themselves. 00:21:33.42\00:21:36.56 That's why that symbol, the Tower of Babel, 00:21:36.59\00:21:38.76 we could say Babelon, but it's Babylon. 00:21:38.79\00:21:40.90 The Tower of Babel is a symbol of last days Babylon 00:21:40.93\00:21:45.03 trying to save yourself by your works. 00:21:45.07\00:21:47.94 Isaiah 4:1, the problem is once again being repeated. 00:21:47.97\00:21:51.31 The Lord says, "In that day, 00:21:51.34\00:21:54.21 seven women will take hold of one man saying, 00:21:54.24\00:21:57.71 'We will eat our own bread, we will wear our own apparel, 00:21:57.75\00:22:00.85 only let us be called by your name, 00:22:00.88\00:22:03.42 to take away our reproach." 00:22:03.45\00:22:05.15 Once again, what the Israelites were guilty of, 00:22:05.19\00:22:07.79 what the antediluvians 00:22:07.82\00:22:09.16 on the post-flood were guilty of, 00:22:09.19\00:22:11.39 the church is guilty of today too. 00:22:11.43\00:22:13.06 That's why we have to get back to the focus. 00:22:13.09\00:22:14.56 It's Christ and Christ alone. 00:22:14.60\00:22:17.60 Let's not forget that. 00:22:17.63\00:22:18.97 So Isaiah points out what happened in those days, 00:22:19.00\00:22:21.87 what the entire human race did, Isaiah 24:5, 00:22:21.90\00:22:25.51 "The earth is also defiled 00:22:25.54\00:22:27.01 under its inhabitants," because what? 00:22:27.04\00:22:29.24 "They have transgressed the laws, 00:22:29.28\00:22:31.38 changed the ordinance, 00:22:31.41\00:22:33.11 broken the everlasting covenant." 00:22:33.15\00:22:35.05 As Shelley pointed out, 00:22:35.08\00:22:36.42 the covenant was everlasting, it hadn't changed. 00:22:36.45\00:22:38.25 The people had issues, they couldn't keep it, 00:22:38.29\00:22:41.42 because they had a different ideology 00:22:41.46\00:22:43.49 compared to the direction 00:22:43.53\00:22:44.86 that God was trying to give them. 00:22:44.89\00:22:46.29 But if you notice, 00:22:46.33\00:22:47.76 even Paul the Apostle 00:22:47.80\00:22:49.13 on the heels of his conversion testimony. 00:22:49.16\00:22:52.90 Romans 7:14, he says, 00:22:52.93\00:22:55.47 "For we know that the law is spiritual, 00:22:55.50\00:22:57.17 but I am carnal sold under sin." 00:22:57.21\00:22:59.41 Once again, the faultiness of any agreement 00:22:59.44\00:23:02.51 is the one who is making the agreement 00:23:02.54\00:23:04.65 with the perfect God. 00:23:04.68\00:23:06.08 That's why He says, we must die daily, 00:23:06.11\00:23:08.48 to maintain this beautiful renewal 00:23:08.52\00:23:11.09 that we have in Christ. 00:23:11.12\00:23:12.45 If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. 00:23:12.49\00:23:14.62 To maintain that 00:23:14.66\00:23:16.32 it is necessary that we die daily 00:23:16.36\00:23:19.43 because without that daily dying to self, 00:23:19.46\00:23:21.70 then we could fall into the same trap 00:23:21.73\00:23:23.87 as the Israelites thinking that, 00:23:23.90\00:23:25.23 well, we do all the things of worship, 00:23:25.27\00:23:27.04 we keep the day that the Lord says, 00:23:27.07\00:23:28.40 we do the right things. 00:23:28.44\00:23:29.77 We read His Word, 00:23:29.80\00:23:31.14 we study our Sabbath School lesson, 00:23:31.17\00:23:32.51 then we're okay. 00:23:32.54\00:23:33.88 No, Paul says that you'll never be okay 00:23:33.91\00:23:35.24 until you are glorified, made perfect. 00:23:35.28\00:23:36.98 We need that daily commitment to have personal renewal. 00:23:37.01\00:23:40.52 That's what we have to keep in mind 00:23:40.55\00:23:41.98 that the work that is being done 00:23:42.02\00:23:43.35 is not by us. 00:23:43.39\00:23:44.72 Philippians 2:13, 00:23:44.75\00:23:46.22 "For it is God who works in you 00:23:46.25\00:23:48.46 both to will and to do of His good pleasure." 00:23:48.49\00:23:51.33 That's why Paul says, later on, 00:23:51.36\00:23:53.19 I can do all things through Christ 00:23:53.23\00:23:55.56 who strengthens me. 00:23:55.60\00:23:56.93 Notice where the focus is. 00:23:56.97\00:23:58.30 Galatians 2:20, 00:23:58.33\00:23:59.67 "I have been crucified with Christ, 00:23:59.70\00:24:01.04 it is no longer I who live," 00:24:01.07\00:24:02.60 all that you do is of no value without 00:24:02.64\00:24:05.41 the remainder of the verse, 00:24:05.44\00:24:06.78 "but Christ lives in me 00:24:06.81\00:24:08.54 and the life which I now live in the flesh, 00:24:08.58\00:24:10.75 I live by faith in the Son of God 00:24:10.78\00:24:13.25 who loved me and gave Himself for me." 00:24:13.28\00:24:15.88 Only through Christ are we new and renewed. 00:24:15.92\00:24:19.42 Amen and amen. 00:24:19.45\00:24:20.79 Thank you. 00:24:20.82\00:24:22.16 And this is what I love about the Book of Hebrews 00:24:22.19\00:24:23.79 is it lifts Jesus up and we see it 00:24:23.83\00:24:27.10 is only by His blood that we are saved, 00:24:27.13\00:24:30.07 but we've got to take a short break. 00:24:30.10\00:24:32.40 Stay tune, we'll be back in 30 seconds. flight of stairs to understand Jesus, 00:25:11.97\00:25:14.14 the Mediator of the New Covenant. 00:25:14.18\00:25:15.74 And now we go to Pastor James Rafferty 00:25:15.78\00:25:18.35 for Tuesday's lesson, 00:25:18.38\00:25:19.88 Amen. Just good stuff. 00:25:19.91\00:25:22.35 My name is James Rafferty, and I have Tuesday's lesson, 00:25:22.38\00:25:25.29 which is, The New Covenant Has a Better Mediator. 00:25:25.32\00:25:29.72 We're going to be reading Hebrews 8:1-6 00:25:29.76\00:25:32.36 a little bit of repetition here, 00:25:32.39\00:25:33.76 but there's so much in the Book of Hebrews. 00:25:33.80\00:25:36.36 There's so much Jesus in the Book of Hebrews that, 00:25:36.40\00:25:39.70 well, it's good for us to go over it again and again. 00:25:39.73\00:25:42.37 Hebrews Chapter 8, 00:25:42.40\00:25:43.74 and I'm just gonna read the verses, verses 1-6, 00:25:43.77\00:25:46.44 "Now of the things which we have spoken 00:25:46.47\00:25:48.68 this is the sum: 00:25:48.71\00:25:50.31 We have such an high priest, 00:25:50.35\00:25:51.75 who is set on the right hand of the throne 00:25:51.78\00:25:53.85 of the Majesty in the heavens, 00:25:53.88\00:25:55.32 a minister of the sanctuary, 00:25:55.35\00:25:57.59 and of the true tabernacle, 00:25:57.62\00:25:59.22 which the Lord pitched, and not man. 00:25:59.25\00:26:01.22 For every high priest is ordained 00:26:01.26\00:26:03.79 to offer gifts and sacrifices: 00:26:03.83\00:26:06.29 wherefore it is of necessity 00:26:06.33\00:26:08.50 that this man have somewhat also to offer. 00:26:08.53\00:26:11.47 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, 00:26:11.50\00:26:15.00 seeing that there are priests 00:26:15.04\00:26:16.67 that offer gifts according to the law: 00:26:16.71\00:26:18.71 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, 00:26:18.74\00:26:21.31 as Moses was admonished of God 00:26:21.34\00:26:23.61 when he was about to make the tabernacle: 00:26:23.65\00:26:25.25 for, see, says he, that thou make us all things 00:26:25.28\00:26:28.48 according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount. 00:26:28.52\00:26:31.15 But now he has obtained a more excellent ministry, 00:26:31.19\00:26:34.32 by how much also he is the mediator 00:26:34.36\00:26:37.63 of a better covenant, 00:26:37.66\00:26:38.99 which was established upon better promises." 00:26:39.03\00:26:43.80 These verses are power-packed. 00:26:43.83\00:26:45.17 And I really love the fact that Paul begins by saying, 00:26:45.20\00:26:47.20 I just want to summarize 00:26:47.24\00:26:48.77 everything we've studied so far. 00:26:48.80\00:26:50.41 He's gone through 00:26:50.44\00:26:51.77 Hebrews Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. 00:26:51.81\00:26:53.58 Now he's in 8. 00:26:53.61\00:26:54.94 I just want to summarize 00:26:54.98\00:26:56.31 everything we've studied so far. 00:26:56.34\00:26:57.68 And here's the summary of everything 00:26:57.71\00:26:59.05 we've studied so far. 00:26:59.08\00:27:00.58 We have a mediator 00:27:00.62\00:27:03.15 of a better covenant in heaven. 00:27:03.18\00:27:06.76 Just in case you missed that, 00:27:06.79\00:27:08.12 that's the point I'm trying to make. 00:27:08.16\00:27:09.56 I'm really, you know because we've, 00:27:09.59\00:27:11.09 we've gone through a little bit of, 00:27:11.13\00:27:12.46 you know, well, you should be teachers, 00:27:12.49\00:27:14.53 but you need Milken. 00:27:14.56\00:27:16.06 I'm not sure if it's possible, you know, but the focus 00:27:16.10\00:27:19.87 that Paul is trying to bring us to is Jesus, 00:27:19.90\00:27:22.67 the mediator of a better covenant. 00:27:22.70\00:27:24.44 So number one, and that the question is 00:27:24.47\00:27:27.28 asked here in the quarterly this day is, 00:27:27.31\00:27:29.81 why is Jesus a better mediator of the covenant? 00:27:29.84\00:27:33.92 Why is it? 00:27:33.95\00:27:35.28 Well, number one, He's sitting at the right hand 00:27:35.32\00:27:37.92 of the throne of God! 00:27:37.95\00:27:40.19 That's why. 00:27:40.22\00:27:41.56 He's at His right hand, He is there for us. 00:27:41.59\00:27:43.73 Number two, He is a mediator of the true tabernacle 00:27:43.76\00:27:48.56 that was set up and built by the Lord and not by man. 00:27:48.60\00:27:52.73 Number three, and this is implied, 00:27:52.77\00:27:55.40 the gifts and the sacrifice of Christ have merit. 00:27:55.44\00:28:00.34 The gifts and the sacrifice of Christ are meritorious. 00:28:00.38\00:28:03.88 The gifts of priests, the sacrifices of priests, 00:28:03.91\00:28:06.01 the sacrifices of animals, as shared by Shelley, 00:28:06.05\00:28:08.62 emphasized by John were not meritorious. 00:28:08.65\00:28:11.32 They couldn't bring what God wanted to bring to us, 00:28:11.35\00:28:14.12 but the gifts and sacrifice of Christ can. 00:28:14.16\00:28:16.86 And that's in verse 3, number six or excuse me, 00:28:16.89\00:28:19.53 point number four in verse 6. 00:28:19.56\00:28:21.33 He has a more excellent ministry, 00:28:21.36\00:28:23.87 again in verse 6, better promises. 00:28:23.90\00:28:26.60 And this is key, we gonna look at this in just a second. 00:28:26.63\00:28:29.60 And, of course, finally, 00:28:29.64\00:28:30.97 in verse 6, it's a better covenant. 00:28:31.01\00:28:33.58 Why? 00:28:33.61\00:28:34.94 Because the Old Covenant was based upon bad promises. 00:28:34.98\00:28:39.05 And what were these bad promises? 00:28:39.08\00:28:40.65 We've talked a little bit about them 00:28:40.68\00:28:42.02 but one of the promises 00:28:42.05\00:28:43.55 that stand out in relationship to the Old Covenant 00:28:43.59\00:28:46.92 is this statement that the people said, 00:28:46.96\00:28:49.32 all that the Lord has said 00:28:49.36\00:28:51.46 we will do and be obedient. 00:28:51.49\00:28:53.53 How long did that last? 00:28:53.56\00:28:54.90 Yeah. Not very long. 00:28:54.93\00:28:56.26 For a day. And it was done. 00:28:56.30\00:28:58.57 The New Covenant is based upon Hebrews 10:9, Hebrews 10:7, 00:28:58.60\00:29:04.54 we've already looked at that. 00:29:04.57\00:29:05.91 I delight to do your will, 00:29:05.94\00:29:07.54 O, my God, ye Thy laws within my heart. 00:29:07.58\00:29:10.85 And Jesus came as a human being, 00:29:10.88\00:29:12.51 and He exemplified that New Covenant experience. 00:29:12.55\00:29:16.79 He did what the Old Covenant promises failed to do. 00:29:16.82\00:29:21.76 He delighted to do it. 00:29:21.79\00:29:23.66 He didn't just say, oh, all that the Lord has said 00:29:23.69\00:29:25.89 we will do and be obedient. 00:29:25.93\00:29:27.80 Just Moses, you go talk to God, 00:29:27.83\00:29:29.63 and we'll do everything you tell us. 00:29:29.66\00:29:31.47 He busted through all of that fear. 00:29:31.50\00:29:33.50 He said, "I delight to You Thy will, 00:29:33.54\00:29:35.17 O my God, ye Thy law is within my heart." 00:29:35.20\00:29:38.77 This is why Jesus Christ, 00:29:38.81\00:29:41.31 as Hebrews explains, is the guarantor. 00:29:41.34\00:29:44.35 That's what the lesson brings out. 00:29:44.38\00:29:45.71 He is the guarantor of the New Covenant. 00:29:45.75\00:29:49.12 He is the guarantor 00:29:49.15\00:29:51.12 because He is a better mediator. 00:29:51.15\00:29:53.82 Now that word mediator is equivalent to guarantor. 00:29:53.86\00:29:57.66 He guarantees that the covenant promises 00:29:57.69\00:30:00.63 will be fulfilled. 00:30:00.66\00:30:03.57 So Christ's death makes the institution 00:30:03.60\00:30:06.90 of the New Covenant possible 00:30:06.94\00:30:08.57 because it satisfies the claims 00:30:08.60\00:30:11.41 of the first covenant with Israel. 00:30:11.44\00:30:13.88 And even with first, 00:30:13.91\00:30:15.51 the first covenant with human beings in Eden, 00:30:15.54\00:30:17.55 which had been broken. 00:30:17.58\00:30:18.98 In this sense, Jesus is the guarantor, 00:30:19.01\00:30:22.38 for He took upon Himself 00:30:22.42\00:30:24.22 all of the legal obligations of the covenant 00:30:24.25\00:30:26.96 that had been broken. 00:30:26.99\00:30:28.96 Check this out. 00:30:28.99\00:30:30.79 Jesus did all that the Lord has said. 00:30:30.83\00:30:34.03 Yes, amen. That's right. 00:30:34.06\00:30:35.83 We said, "We'll do all the Lord has said," 00:30:35.86\00:30:37.70 we didn't, but Jesus did all that the Lord said. 00:30:37.73\00:30:40.77 All that the Lord said Jesus did. 00:30:40.80\00:30:42.77 I love that. 00:30:42.80\00:30:44.14 You see, the Old Covenant was... 00:30:44.17\00:30:47.41 Let me put it this way. 00:30:47.44\00:30:48.78 God's covenant was intercepted by bad promises. 00:30:48.81\00:30:53.62 God's everlasting covenant on Sinai, 00:30:53.65\00:30:55.92 God's everlasting covenant, 00:30:55.95\00:30:57.29 the one He made with Abraham, the one He made with Noah, 00:30:57.32\00:30:58.95 the one that's that continues all the way down 00:30:58.99\00:31:01.12 through the very end of the Book of Revelation. 00:31:01.16\00:31:03.79 That covenant that God wanted to establish on planet earth 00:31:03.83\00:31:06.66 was intercepted by bad promises. 00:31:06.70\00:31:09.90 God's new covenant, God's everlasting covenant, 00:31:09.93\00:31:12.20 Jesus Christ was faithful, He was obedient. 00:31:12.23\00:31:16.71 He intercepted the bad promises with good promises. 00:31:16.74\00:31:21.48 He intercepted the bad promises with faithfulness, 00:31:21.51\00:31:24.21 and He did it not as a God, 00:31:24.25\00:31:26.58 not even as an angel but as a man. 00:31:26.61\00:31:29.22 He came in humanity, 00:31:29.25\00:31:31.72 and He fulfilled the bad promises 00:31:31.75\00:31:33.46 humanity had made. 00:31:33.49\00:31:34.89 We intercepted God's everlasting covenant 00:31:34.92\00:31:37.46 with our bad promises. 00:31:37.49\00:31:38.83 Jesus became a man 00:31:38.86\00:31:40.20 and intercepted our bad promises 00:31:40.23\00:31:41.56 with faithfulness. 00:31:41.60\00:31:42.93 It's just a beautiful picture 00:31:42.96\00:31:44.93 that we see here in the Book of Hebrews. 00:31:44.97\00:31:47.74 So as we get to the last page of this day's lesson, 00:31:47.77\00:31:51.44 it says that Jesus is a greater mediator 00:31:51.47\00:31:54.38 than Moses, 00:31:54.41\00:31:55.74 because He ministers in the heavenly sanctuary, 00:31:55.78\00:31:57.91 and as offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice for us, 00:31:57.95\00:32:01.42 not just perfect in the sense of a sacrifice for sin, 00:32:01.45\00:32:04.45 but perfect in a sense of obedience 00:32:04.49\00:32:07.19 to the covenant to all that the Lord has said. 00:32:07.22\00:32:10.16 Hebrews 8:1-5, 00:32:10.19\00:32:12.09 Moses' face reflected the glory of God, 00:32:12.13\00:32:15.60 but Jesus is the glory of God. 00:32:15.63\00:32:18.90 Amen. I like that. 00:32:18.93\00:32:21.27 Moses spoke with God face to face, 00:32:21.30\00:32:23.37 but Jesus is God personified, 00:32:23.41\00:32:27.84 powerful thoughts. 00:32:27.88\00:32:29.88 So in closing, 00:32:29.91\00:32:31.28 the quarterly asked the question, yes, 00:32:31.31\00:32:33.11 Christ did satisfy the demands 00:32:33.15\00:32:35.05 of the covenant for obedience, praise God. 00:32:35.08\00:32:37.75 In this light, what is the role of obedience 00:32:37.79\00:32:41.12 in our life 00:32:41.16\00:32:42.56 and why is it so important? 00:32:42.59\00:32:45.56 I want us to look at a verse in Colossians Chapter 1. 00:32:45.59\00:32:48.83 Now the context of this verse 00:32:48.86\00:32:50.33 in Colossians Chapter 1 is telling us about 00:32:50.37\00:32:53.20 how the gospel has come 00:32:53.23\00:32:54.97 into our lives into our hearts. 00:32:55.00\00:32:56.87 It's impacted us. 00:32:56.91\00:32:58.47 And Paul proceeds to tell us what happens 00:32:58.51\00:33:01.28 when this gospel that we've just described 00:33:01.31\00:33:03.61 of Christ fulfilling the covenant promises of Him 00:33:03.65\00:33:08.75 as a human intercepting our bad promises 00:33:08.78\00:33:11.29 and being faithful to God's everlasting covenant. 00:33:11.32\00:33:13.69 What does that look like when it comes into the heart 00:33:13.72\00:33:16.09 of a human being, 00:33:16.12\00:33:17.46 into my heart and into your heart? 00:33:17.49\00:33:18.89 Colossians Chapter 1, 00:33:18.93\00:33:20.70 we'll just begin here with verse 5 00:33:20.73\00:33:22.06 and read verses 5 and 6. 00:33:22.10\00:33:24.03 "For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, 00:33:24.07\00:33:27.57 whereof you heard 00:33:27.60\00:33:28.94 before in the word of truth of the gospel, 00:33:28.97\00:33:31.67 which is come unto to you," 00:33:31.71\00:33:33.17 verse six, "as it is in all the world," 00:33:33.21\00:33:36.48 here it is, "brings forth fruit, 00:33:36.51\00:33:40.88 as it does also in you, 00:33:40.92\00:33:42.25 since the day you heard of it 00:33:42.28\00:33:43.62 and knew the grace of God in truth." 00:33:43.65\00:33:45.55 The point is that God wants to bring forth fruit. 00:33:45.59\00:33:49.12 Jesus says this is how you're going to know 00:33:49.16\00:33:51.66 the truth from the error. 00:33:51.69\00:33:53.03 This is how you gonna know My disciples 00:33:53.06\00:33:54.93 from those who just professed to be My disciples. 00:33:54.96\00:33:56.80 By their fruits, Jesus says in Matthew Chapter 7, 00:33:56.83\00:33:59.53 "By their fruits, you shall know them." 00:33:59.57\00:34:01.77 The fruit is what confirms 00:34:01.80\00:34:05.14 the authenticity of the tree. 00:34:05.17\00:34:08.71 See, we planted an orchard many years ago, 00:34:08.74\00:34:10.78 we first build a house. 00:34:10.81\00:34:12.15 I've been Miele washing by the Canadian border, 00:34:12.18\00:34:13.95 you know, they said, plant those trees, 00:34:13.98\00:34:15.62 because only three years 00:34:15.65\00:34:16.99 before you let them have the fruit. 00:34:17.02\00:34:18.49 And so we planted those trees 00:34:18.52\00:34:19.85 even before we had our house finished, 00:34:19.89\00:34:21.22 and every year we plucked off all the blossoms, 00:34:21.26\00:34:23.26 so none of the fruit would appear 00:34:23.29\00:34:24.66 because we didn't want the tree to have fruit 00:34:24.69\00:34:27.53 before the roots were established. 00:34:27.56\00:34:29.56 After the third year, 00:34:29.60\00:34:30.93 we let the blossoms grow into fruit. 00:34:30.97\00:34:32.87 By that time, I had forgotten which tree was the peach tree, 00:34:32.90\00:34:35.64 and which tree was the apple tree, 00:34:35.67\00:34:37.01 and which tree was the cherry tree. 00:34:37.04\00:34:38.37 I wasn't an orchardist so to speak, 00:34:38.41\00:34:41.48 but as those blossoms turned into fruit, 00:34:41.51\00:34:44.05 and as the fruit began to appear and take shape, 00:34:44.08\00:34:46.85 oh, there's the cherry tree, got little cherries on there. 00:34:46.88\00:34:49.95 There's the pear tree, there's little pears on there. 00:34:49.98\00:34:52.02 There's the apple tree. 00:34:52.05\00:34:53.59 It's got the apples on there. 00:34:53.62\00:34:55.02 But let me ask you a question. 00:34:55.06\00:34:56.62 Did the fruit make the tree an apple tree? 00:34:56.66\00:35:00.16 Yeah. 00:35:00.20\00:35:01.53 I know you shared this a little bit earlier 00:35:01.56\00:35:02.90 because I remember the one I missed, 00:35:02.93\00:35:04.33 you were sharing this illustration. 00:35:04.37\00:35:05.70 I love it. 00:35:05.73\00:35:07.07 No, the fruit didn't make the tree an apple tree. 00:35:07.10\00:35:09.10 The apple tree was already a tree, 00:35:09.14\00:35:11.07 it was an apple tree for three years 00:35:11.11\00:35:12.47 before the fruit appeared. 00:35:12.51\00:35:13.84 But what did the fruit do? 00:35:13.88\00:35:15.21 It confirmed that the tree was an apple tree. 00:35:15.24\00:35:18.28 We're not saved by our fruit. 00:35:18.31\00:35:20.88 The fruit doesn't save us, the fruit simply confirms 00:35:20.92\00:35:23.45 that we are saved in Jesus Christ. 00:35:23.49\00:35:24.82 Amen. And I love that. 00:35:24.85\00:35:27.22 Thank you so much, Shelley, Pastor John, and Pastor James. 00:35:27.26\00:35:30.06 I love the analogy, Pastor John, of the staircase, 00:35:30.09\00:35:33.63 because that's really what's happening 00:35:33.66\00:35:35.50 as we journey through the Book of Hebrews. 00:35:35.53\00:35:37.63 Sometimes we climb up a step or we go down a step 00:35:37.67\00:35:40.34 because the whole thing is about Jesus, 00:35:40.37\00:35:42.47 and the covenant and His high priestly ministry, 00:35:42.50\00:35:46.27 and His sacrifice. 00:35:46.31\00:35:47.71 So what a beautiful quarterly and study. 00:35:47.74\00:35:50.78 I'm Jill Morikone, I have Wednesday's lesson, 00:35:50.81\00:35:53.38 The New Covenant Has Better Promises. 00:35:53.42\00:35:56.42 And we're going to be touching, repeating, 00:35:56.45\00:35:58.52 and enlarging on many of the things 00:35:58.55\00:36:00.36 that have been already shared here today. 00:36:00.39\00:36:03.32 We're gonna compare actually the Old Covenant promises 00:36:03.36\00:36:06.83 with the New Covenant promises. 00:36:06.86\00:36:10.37 I want to ask you a question. 00:36:10.40\00:36:11.73 Are there greater rewards for the New Covenant 00:36:11.77\00:36:13.77 than there were for the Old Covenant? 00:36:13.80\00:36:16.57 Was there eternal life promised in the Old Covenant? 00:36:16.60\00:36:19.01 Absolutely. 00:36:19.04\00:36:20.41 Eternal life in the New Covenant? 00:36:20.44\00:36:21.84 Absolutely. 00:36:21.88\00:36:23.35 In the Old Covenant were they looking forward 00:36:23.38\00:36:25.65 to the heavenly homeland? 00:36:25.68\00:36:27.02 Absolutely. 00:36:27.05\00:36:28.38 Hebrews 11, we have not really gotten to that yet, 00:36:28.42\00:36:30.85 but we will in a few lessons. 00:36:30.89\00:36:32.62 Hebrews 11:10, says, for he, this is Abraham, 00:36:32.65\00:36:36.62 now he would be under the "Old Covenant, 00:36:36.66\00:36:39.39 the Abrahamic Covenant." 00:36:39.43\00:36:40.86 "He waited for the city which has foundations, 00:36:40.90\00:36:43.47 whose builder and maker is God." 00:36:43.50\00:36:46.80 And then jump down to verse 13. 00:36:46.84\00:36:48.47 It says these, who are these? 00:36:48.50\00:36:50.37 These are the patriarchs and prophets 00:36:50.41\00:36:53.04 under the Old Covenant. 00:36:53.07\00:36:54.84 "They died in faith, 00:36:54.88\00:36:56.38 not having received the promises, 00:36:56.41\00:36:59.31 but having seen them afar off, and they were assured of them, 00:36:59.35\00:37:02.95 they embraced them and confessed 00:37:02.98\00:37:04.32 that they were strangers and pilgrims in the earth." 00:37:04.35\00:37:06.52 So both the Old Covenant 00:37:06.55\00:37:07.89 and the New Covenant had the same rewards. 00:37:07.92\00:37:10.59 They both had the promise of eternal life 00:37:10.63\00:37:14.93 but yet the New Covenant is built on better promises. 00:37:14.96\00:37:19.90 Hebrews 8:6, 00:37:19.93\00:37:21.27 we've already read this, but let's read it again. 00:37:21.30\00:37:22.84 Hebrews 8:6, "Now He, this is Jesus, 00:37:22.87\00:37:26.88 has obtained a more excellent ministry, 00:37:26.91\00:37:29.78 inasmuch as He is also a mediator of the New Covenant, 00:37:29.81\00:37:33.65 of a better covenant, 00:37:33.68\00:37:35.25 which was established on better promises." 00:37:35.28\00:37:39.09 That word better appears many times 00:37:39.12\00:37:42.36 in the Book of Hebrews. 00:37:42.39\00:37:44.46 And if you look at the original Greek, 00:37:44.49\00:37:46.33 that word appears in Hebrews 1:4, 00:37:46.36\00:37:48.20 Jesus became so much better, 00:37:48.23\00:37:50.47 there's that word, than the angels. 00:37:50.50\00:37:53.13 It appears in Hebrews 7:19, we have a better hope, 00:37:53.17\00:37:56.74 through which we draw near to God. 00:37:56.77\00:37:59.24 It appears in Hebrews 7:22, 00:37:59.27\00:38:01.31 Jesus has become surety of a better covenant. 00:38:01.34\00:38:05.41 Hebrews 8:6, we just read it. 00:38:05.45\00:38:07.12 Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant 00:38:07.15\00:38:09.72 established on better promises. 00:38:09.75\00:38:12.55 Hebrews 9:23 talks about better sacrifices than these. 00:38:12.59\00:38:17.69 Hebrews 10:34 talks about a better 00:38:17.73\00:38:20.36 and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven. 00:38:20.40\00:38:24.23 Hebrews 11:16 says they desire a better country, 00:38:24.27\00:38:28.54 that is a heavenly country. 00:38:28.57\00:38:31.31 Hebrews 11:35, others were tortured, 00:38:31.34\00:38:34.41 not accepting deliverance, 00:38:34.44\00:38:35.84 that they might obtain a better resurrection. 00:38:35.88\00:38:39.95 Hebrews 11:40, 00:38:39.98\00:38:41.55 God having provided something better for us, 00:38:41.58\00:38:45.69 this again is the promise of the New Covenant. 00:38:45.72\00:38:48.62 Hebrews 12:24, to Jesus, 00:38:48.66\00:38:50.79 the Mediator of the New Covenant 00:38:50.83\00:38:52.46 and to the blood of sprinkling 00:38:52.49\00:38:53.83 that speaks better things than that of Abel." 00:38:53.86\00:38:57.67 That word better is all throughout 00:38:57.70\00:39:00.40 the Book of Hebrews. 00:39:00.44\00:39:02.17 In Hebrews, something better refers 00:39:02.20\00:39:04.21 to those blessings that we're going to look at 00:39:04.24\00:39:06.71 in the New Covenant. 00:39:06.74\00:39:08.61 Now, this has been covered very clearly, 00:39:08.64\00:39:10.48 those under the Old Covenant, 00:39:10.51\00:39:11.95 they had access to the same blessings as well, 00:39:11.98\00:39:15.02 but they only received them in figure 00:39:15.05\00:39:17.35 or in shadow of what was to come 00:39:17.39\00:39:21.26 and they failed at receiving those blessings 00:39:21.29\00:39:25.33 as Pastor James brought out so eloquently. 00:39:25.36\00:39:27.63 So let's look at the Old Covenant promises 00:39:27.66\00:39:29.63 and the New Covenant promises. 00:39:29.66\00:39:31.33 We're going to compare Exodus 24, 00:39:31.37\00:39:33.97 and Hebrews Chapter 10. 00:39:34.00\00:39:35.67 So you can keep a finger in Hebrews 10 00:39:35.70\00:39:37.71 and a finger in Exodus 24, 00:39:37.74\00:39:40.51 we're going to compare the two. 00:39:40.54\00:39:42.21 Remember, Exodus 24, is right at the end 00:39:42.24\00:39:44.81 of the giving of the Sinaitic Covenant. 00:39:44.85\00:39:47.08 It's given in Exodus 19, 00:39:47.12\00:39:48.82 we have the heart of the covenant 00:39:48.85\00:39:50.19 with the Ten Commandment law in Exodus 20. 00:39:50.22\00:39:52.29 And then by the time we get to Exodus 24, 00:39:52.32\00:39:54.39 we see this ratification of the covenant and blood. 00:39:54.42\00:39:57.59 So let's take a look at this. 00:39:57.63\00:39:59.46 We're going to compare the Old Covenant promises 00:39:59.49\00:40:02.10 and the New Covenant promises, 00:40:02.13\00:40:03.70 we're going to compare them. 00:40:03.73\00:40:05.07 And I have five comparisons for you and hopefully, 00:40:05.10\00:40:08.10 we'll get through all of this. 00:40:08.14\00:40:10.64 The first comparison is separation from God. 00:40:10.67\00:40:13.41 In the Old Covenant, 00:40:13.44\00:40:14.78 the people were separated from God, 00:40:14.81\00:40:16.34 only Moses was allowed direct access 00:40:16.38\00:40:19.98 into God's presence. 00:40:20.02\00:40:22.02 In the New Covenant, 00:40:22.05\00:40:23.39 Jesus' sacrifice bridged the gulf 00:40:23.42\00:40:26.72 between us and God and brought us together. 00:40:26.76\00:40:29.92 We're in Exodus 24, this is the Old Covenant, 00:40:29.96\00:40:32.16 we see that gulf between the people and God. 00:40:32.19\00:40:34.76 Exodus 24:1-2, "Now He said to Moses, 00:40:34.80\00:40:37.97 'Come up to the Lord, 00:40:38.00\00:40:39.33 you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, 00:40:39.37\00:40:40.84 and seventy of the elders of Israel, 00:40:40.87\00:40:43.07 and worship from afar. 00:40:43.10\00:40:46.07 And Moses alone shall come near the Lord, 00:40:46.11\00:40:49.78 but they shall not come near, 00:40:49.81\00:40:51.15 nor shall the people go up with him.'" 00:40:51.18\00:40:52.61 We see this separation from the people 00:40:52.65\00:40:55.28 in their sinfulness and the holiness of God 00:40:55.32\00:40:57.79 and Moses alone was allowed access. 00:40:57.82\00:41:00.22 Moses is a type of Christ. 00:41:00.26\00:41:01.69 Moses as an intercessor, 00:41:01.72\00:41:03.83 you could say for the people in the New Covenant. 00:41:03.86\00:41:06.76 In Hebrews 10:19-20, "We see therefore, brethren, 00:41:06.80\00:41:10.80 having boldness to enter the Holiest 00:41:10.83\00:41:13.80 by the blood of Jesus." 00:41:13.84\00:41:15.40 So Jesus bridges that access. 00:41:15.44\00:41:17.77 Jesus brings us, bridges that gulf 00:41:17.81\00:41:20.41 and brings us directly 00:41:20.44\00:41:21.88 into the presence of the Father. 00:41:21.91\00:41:23.98 Through Him, you and I can come boldly 00:41:24.01\00:41:26.35 before the throne of grace. 00:41:26.38\00:41:28.15 Ephesians 2:13, "Now in Christ Jesus, 00:41:28.18\00:41:31.25 you who are once far off 00:41:31.29\00:41:33.36 have been brought near by the blood of Christ." 00:41:33.39\00:41:36.56 Let's look at comparison number two. 00:41:36.59\00:41:38.53 Obedience is a condition of the covenant. 00:41:38.56\00:41:43.26 In the Old Covenant, as Pastor James brought out, 00:41:43.30\00:41:46.27 the humans imperfectly obeyed the law. 00:41:46.30\00:41:49.64 Why? 00:41:49.67\00:41:51.01 They tried to obey in their own strength. 00:41:51.04\00:41:52.67 They said, all that the Lord has said, 00:41:52.71\00:41:54.54 we will do, not recognizing that 00:41:54.58\00:41:59.05 they couldn't do anything. 00:41:59.08\00:42:00.42 All our righteousness is as filthy rags. 00:42:00.45\00:42:05.09 In the New Covenant, Jesus, we're in Hebrews 10:7, 00:42:05.12\00:42:09.16 I think it was Shelley who read this. 00:42:09.19\00:42:10.93 "Then I said, 'Behold, I have come in 00:42:10.96\00:42:12.56 the volume of the book it is written of Me 00:42:12.59\00:42:15.66 to do Your will, O God." 00:42:15.70\00:42:18.87 Jesus came as the perfect sacrifice 00:42:18.90\00:42:21.50 in substitute. 00:42:21.54\00:42:22.87 He lived the perfect life in humanity, 00:42:22.90\00:42:26.91 in flesh, He lived the perfect life, 00:42:26.94\00:42:29.51 and He died as the perfect substitute. 00:42:29.54\00:42:32.71 His perfect obedience guarantees 00:42:32.75\00:42:35.85 the covenant promises 00:42:35.88\00:42:37.59 that are extended to us today. 00:42:37.62\00:42:40.66 Comparison number three, 00:42:40.69\00:42:42.06 sacrifice is required as a result of sin. 00:42:42.09\00:42:46.49 In the Old Testament, 00:42:46.53\00:42:47.86 the difference between the two covenants. 00:42:47.90\00:42:49.23 The Old Testament 00:42:49.26\00:42:50.60 and that sacrifice prefigured Christ. 00:42:50.63\00:42:52.83 It was animals' sacrifices, 00:42:52.87\00:42:55.17 but it did not actually cleanse from sin, 00:42:55.20\00:42:57.91 but by faith in the coming Messiah, 00:42:57.94\00:43:01.44 it cleansed from sin, but Jesus when He came, 00:43:01.48\00:43:05.81 He was the perfect sacrifice and He cleansed from sin. 00:43:05.85\00:43:09.32 Not only everyone from that point forward 00:43:09.35\00:43:12.05 but everyone behind who had looked forward 00:43:12.09\00:43:15.09 in faith to the coming Messiah. 00:43:15.12\00:43:18.79 We see in Hebrews 10:6, 00:43:18.83\00:43:20.73 "And burn offerings and sacrifices for sin, 00:43:20.76\00:43:22.80 you had no pleasure." 00:43:22.83\00:43:24.17 Verse 8, "Previously saying, sacrifice and offering. 00:43:24.20\00:43:27.14 Burnt offerings and offerings for sin, 00:43:27.17\00:43:28.90 you did not desire nor had pleasure in them." 00:43:28.94\00:43:31.67 Verse 10, 00:43:31.71\00:43:33.04 "But that will we have been sanctified 00:43:33.07\00:43:35.58 through the offering of the body 00:43:35.61\00:43:37.11 of Jesus Christ once for all." 00:43:37.15\00:43:39.78 You see in Christ type met antitype. 00:43:39.81\00:43:42.95 By one offering He perfected forever 00:43:42.98\00:43:46.32 those who are being sanctified. 00:43:46.35\00:43:48.19 Comparison number four, 00:43:48.22\00:43:49.59 the covenant was to be ratified with blood. 00:43:49.62\00:43:52.66 In the Old Testament, the Old Covenant, 00:43:52.69\00:43:54.96 it was ratified with the sacrifice of animals. 00:43:55.00\00:43:58.33 In the New Covenant, 00:43:58.37\00:43:59.70 it's ratified with the blood of Christ. 00:43:59.73\00:44:02.54 Hebrews 10:9, "Then he said, 'Behold, 00:44:02.57\00:44:06.04 I have come to do Your will, 00:44:06.07\00:44:07.68 O God, He takes away the first. 00:44:07.71\00:44:11.18 Jesus death took away the animal sacrificial system, 00:44:11.21\00:44:15.98 that he may establish the second." 00:44:16.02\00:44:19.29 That Old Covenant system 00:44:19.32\00:44:20.96 of the sacrifices was taken away 00:44:20.99\00:44:23.22 so that the New Covenant of Jesus' blood 00:44:23.26\00:44:26.49 would be established. 00:44:26.53\00:44:28.10 And finally, number five, comparison number five, 00:44:28.13\00:44:31.33 the covenant required the law. 00:44:31.37\00:44:34.67 The Old Covenant, 00:44:34.70\00:44:36.04 the laws we know was written on the tables of stone. 00:44:36.07\00:44:39.31 The New Covenant is written where? 00:44:39.34\00:44:41.64 In the tables of the heart. 00:44:41.68\00:44:44.98 Hebrews 10:16, 00:44:45.01\00:44:46.35 "This is the covenant I will make with them 00:44:46.38\00:44:48.52 after those days, says the Lord. 00:44:48.55\00:44:50.35 I put My law in their hearts, and in their minds, 00:44:50.39\00:44:54.32 I will write them." 00:44:54.36\00:44:55.72 Now, I don't know this is just Jill's interpretation 00:44:55.76\00:44:58.29 and you might disagree with this, 00:44:58.33\00:44:59.66 but I actually believe the Old Covenant, 00:44:59.69\00:45:01.93 God wanted to write in their hearts as well. 00:45:01.96\00:45:04.30 If you read that in Deuteronomy Chapter 11, 00:45:04.33\00:45:07.04 you can see where God says, 00:45:07.07\00:45:09.10 "Write it in your hearts." 00:45:09.14\00:45:11.14 But for whatever reason, 00:45:11.17\00:45:12.64 the people looked at it as legalism 00:45:12.67\00:45:15.04 or an outward form of obedience 00:45:15.08\00:45:17.05 or we can save ourselves by our own works 00:45:17.08\00:45:20.02 or our own obedience. 00:45:20.05\00:45:21.92 And they fail to recognize 00:45:21.95\00:45:23.69 that God really wanted to write it 00:45:23.72\00:45:25.05 in their hearts as well. 00:45:25.09\00:45:26.42 So in that case, I think God wanted to write 00:45:26.45\00:45:28.09 in the Old Covenant and New Covenant, 00:45:28.12\00:45:30.03 the law in their hearts, 00:45:30.06\00:45:31.39 but the people were stubborn 00:45:31.43\00:45:32.76 but the beautiful thing is that the New Covenant 00:45:32.79\00:45:34.63 is built on those better promises. 00:45:34.66\00:45:37.20 That's right. Amen. 00:45:37.23\00:45:38.57 Amen. 00:45:38.60\00:45:39.93 What a blessing it has been to be here 00:45:39.97\00:45:41.30 at this part of the table 00:45:41.34\00:45:42.67 and listening to each and every one of you. 00:45:42.70\00:45:44.41 Well, my name is John Dinzey, 00:45:44.44\00:45:45.77 and I have Thursday's portion of the lesson. 00:45:45.81\00:45:48.51 The title is The New Covenant 00:45:48.54\00:45:50.61 Has Solved the Problem of the Heart. 00:45:50.65\00:45:55.18 In this portion of the lesson 00:45:55.22\00:45:56.55 we are comparing Ezekiel 36:26-27 00:45:56.58\00:46:01.09 and Jeremiah 31:33. 00:46:01.12\00:46:04.96 So we've been using a word that I wonder 00:46:04.99\00:46:07.70 if the new generation understands. 00:46:07.73\00:46:09.26 We don't use this in everyday language, 00:46:09.30\00:46:10.80 the word covenant. 00:46:10.83\00:46:12.17 Well, what is the covenant? 00:46:12.20\00:46:13.54 Well, the dictionary says it's an agreement, 00:46:13.57\00:46:15.17 usually formal between two or more persons. 00:46:15.20\00:46:18.61 So if you're in the... 00:46:18.64\00:46:19.97 Younger generation, perhaps, 00:46:20.01\00:46:21.34 a synonym would be an agreement or a contract, 00:46:21.38\00:46:24.65 where two are joined together, 00:46:24.68\00:46:26.82 either groups of people or people to agree to do 00:46:26.85\00:46:29.65 one thing or not to do one thing. 00:46:29.68\00:46:31.32 So here, we've talked about 00:46:31.35\00:46:34.06 the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. 00:46:34.09\00:46:36.83 Good information, and I hope you jotted things down 00:46:36.86\00:46:39.39 or like we've said before, 00:46:39.43\00:46:40.76 you can go on to 3ABN+ 00:46:40.80\00:46:43.83 and go back and listen again and write things down. 00:46:43.87\00:46:46.60 Let's go to Jeremiah 11:10, 00:46:46.63\00:46:52.34 this is what God says, 00:46:52.37\00:46:53.71 "They are turned back to the iniquities 00:46:53.74\00:46:56.75 of their forefathers 00:46:56.78\00:46:58.35 which refused to hear My words, 00:46:58.38\00:47:01.32 and they went after other gods to serve them, 00:47:01.35\00:47:04.82 the house of Israel and the house of Judah 00:47:04.85\00:47:07.46 have broken My covenant, 00:47:07.49\00:47:09.59 which I made with their fathers." 00:47:09.62\00:47:12.93 So here we have a situation 00:47:12.96\00:47:15.20 where God is declaring they broke My covenant. 00:47:15.23\00:47:17.40 And the lesson says, 00:47:17.43\00:47:18.77 the first covenant document 00:47:18.80\00:47:20.14 was written by God on tablets of stone, 00:47:20.17\00:47:23.17 and was deposited in the Ark of the Covenant 00:47:23.20\00:47:25.41 as an important witness of God's covenant 00:47:25.44\00:47:27.71 with His people. 00:47:27.74\00:47:29.08 That's found in Exodus 31:18, 00:47:29.11\00:47:31.68 and Deuteronomy 10:1-4 discusses it. 00:47:31.71\00:47:34.88 Now stone, when you write something on stone, 00:47:34.92\00:47:37.35 it's permanent, it's very difficult 00:47:37.39\00:47:38.95 to change what's written on stone, 00:47:38.99\00:47:40.72 however, you can take a stone and hit it with a hammer 00:47:40.76\00:47:44.09 or throw it up in the air 00:47:44.13\00:47:45.46 and maybe you can break it. 00:47:45.49\00:47:46.86 Now the lesson also brings out documents written in stone, 00:47:46.90\00:47:50.30 however, could be broken and scrolls as Jeremiah 00:47:50.33\00:47:52.97 had experienced could be cut up 00:47:53.00\00:47:54.87 and burned in Jeremiah 36:23. 00:47:54.90\00:47:59.67 There's going to be a difference 00:47:59.71\00:48:01.04 when they are written in the heart. 00:48:01.08\00:48:02.41 Praise the Lord for that. 00:48:02.44\00:48:03.78 Look at Deuteronomy 5:29. 00:48:03.81\00:48:05.91 This is God's desire. 00:48:05.95\00:48:07.28 Notice the expression here that is brought out. 00:48:07.32\00:48:10.65 Deuteronomy 25:29, 00:48:10.69\00:48:12.79 "All that they had such a heart in them, 00:48:12.82\00:48:16.29 that they would fear Me, 00:48:16.32\00:48:18.19 and always keep all My commandments, 00:48:18.23\00:48:21.26 that it might be well with them, 00:48:21.30\00:48:24.53 and with their children forever." 00:48:24.57\00:48:27.34 You see, keeping God's commandments 00:48:27.37\00:48:29.57 brings you the blessings that God wants to bring you. 00:48:29.60\00:48:32.81 When you disobey God's commandments, 00:48:32.84\00:48:34.64 God has to withhold blessings from you. 00:48:34.68\00:48:38.25 In Jeremiah 3:20, we go there quickly. 00:48:38.28\00:48:41.65 He says, surely as a wife treacherously 00:48:41.68\00:48:45.49 departs from her husband, 00:48:45.52\00:48:46.96 so have you dealt treacherously with Me, 00:48:46.99\00:48:49.89 oh house of Israel, says the Lord." 00:48:49.92\00:48:52.29 So here we have the Lord, 00:48:52.33\00:48:53.76 and over and over again He sent prophets, 00:48:53.80\00:48:57.17 and He sent judges to them, 00:48:57.20\00:48:58.97 to help them understand 00:48:59.00\00:49:01.20 that they should serve the Lord with all of their hearts, 00:49:01.24\00:49:04.64 and they just continually refused. 00:49:04.67\00:49:07.81 Jeremiah, 3:12-13 says, 00:49:07.84\00:49:10.98 "Go and proclaim these words towards the north, 00:49:11.01\00:49:14.45 and say, return, 00:49:14.48\00:49:16.99 backsliding Israel says the Lord. 00:49:17.02\00:49:19.35 I will not cause My anger to fall on you, 00:49:19.39\00:49:22.89 for I am merciful says the Lord, 00:49:22.92\00:49:24.76 I will not remain angry forever. 00:49:24.79\00:49:27.00 Only acknowledge your iniquity 00:49:27.03\00:49:29.90 that you have transgressed against the Lord your God, 00:49:29.93\00:49:32.97 and have scattered your charms to alien deities 00:49:33.00\00:49:36.40 under every green tree, 00:49:36.44\00:49:37.77 and you have not obeyed My voice, 00:49:37.81\00:49:39.81 says the Lord." 00:49:39.84\00:49:41.18 So while the people of Israel are doing this, 00:49:41.21\00:49:43.35 we see this call of the Lord to return 00:49:43.38\00:49:46.38 and He would have mercy on them. 00:49:46.41\00:49:47.82 In the same way, if you are not with the Lord, 00:49:47.85\00:49:51.12 if you have walked away from the Lord, the Lord says, 00:49:51.15\00:49:53.22 return to Me, and I will be merciful to you. 00:49:53.25\00:49:58.09 In Jeremiah 17:1, 00:49:58.13\00:50:00.76 the lesson brings out this verse, 00:50:00.80\00:50:03.57 very important, it says, 00:50:03.60\00:50:05.23 "The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, 00:50:05.27\00:50:09.64 and with the point of a diamond 00:50:09.67\00:50:11.44 it is engraved on the tablet of the heart, 00:50:11.47\00:50:14.88 and on the horns of your altar." 00:50:14.91\00:50:17.28 It's very interesting that it says 00:50:17.31\00:50:18.65 on the tablet of the heart, 00:50:18.68\00:50:20.12 because like, you must understand 00:50:20.15\00:50:22.98 that if you do evil, evil, evil, 00:50:23.02\00:50:25.15 this forms a pattern in the mind and in the heart, 00:50:25.19\00:50:28.39 in which the devil wants to bring people 00:50:28.42\00:50:32.46 to the same condition 00:50:32.49\00:50:34.13 that the people before the flood. 00:50:34.16\00:50:36.77 This is something he's trying to do today. 00:50:36.80\00:50:38.60 What were the conditions in Genesis 6? 00:50:38.63\00:50:41.54 It says, the thoughts of people's hearts 00:50:41.57\00:50:45.01 were only evil continually. 00:50:45.04\00:50:47.74 And God wants to bring us out of that 00:50:47.78\00:50:51.01 and He wants to change us and transform us. 00:50:51.05\00:50:54.05 Jeremiah 13:23, 00:50:54.08\00:50:57.62 "Can the Ethiopian change his skin 00:50:57.65\00:51:01.49 or the leopard its spots? 00:51:01.52\00:51:03.59 Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil." 00:51:03.63\00:51:08.00 We need a new mind. 00:51:08.03\00:51:09.70 We need a new heart, and that comes from the Lord. 00:51:09.73\00:51:13.00 So the Lord promises a New Covenant 00:51:13.03\00:51:14.77 that you have heard. 00:51:14.80\00:51:16.14 Jeremiah 31:33, "But this is the covenant, 00:51:16.17\00:51:21.61 the agreement that I will make with the house of Israel 00:51:21.64\00:51:24.78 after those days, 00:51:24.81\00:51:26.15 says the Lord. 00:51:26.18\00:51:27.52 I will put My laws in their minds 00:51:27.55\00:51:32.99 and write it on their hearts, 00:51:33.02\00:51:35.69 and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." 00:51:35.72\00:51:39.63 Notice that it says, I will be their God, 00:51:39.66\00:51:42.06 and they shall be My people. 00:51:42.10\00:51:44.20 It is a people that have a desire to serve the Lord. 00:51:44.23\00:51:47.84 I will be their God, I will be with you. 00:51:47.87\00:51:50.67 I will protect you. 00:51:50.71\00:51:52.14 I will be your fortress around you. 00:51:52.17\00:51:55.58 I will be a father to you, and you will be My children. 00:51:55.61\00:51:59.15 This is what God wants to do. 00:51:59.18\00:52:01.78 Revelation 22:17, the Bible says, 00:52:01.82\00:52:05.72 "And the Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!' 00:52:05.75\00:52:09.32 And let him who here say, 'Come!' 00:52:09.36\00:52:11.63 And let him who thirsts come. 00:52:11.66\00:52:13.19 Whoever desires, 00:52:13.23\00:52:14.56 let him take the waters of life, freely." 00:52:14.60\00:52:17.63 God is making this offer to people today. 00:52:17.67\00:52:22.54 And, you know, we're talking about a covenant 00:52:22.57\00:52:24.44 that He wants to make with the house of Israel. 00:52:24.47\00:52:27.24 We have to understand that this is a reference 00:52:27.28\00:52:30.88 to modern spiritual Israel, 00:52:30.91\00:52:34.62 the Jews, the people of Israel, 00:52:34.65\00:52:36.52 they too can partake of this as individuals, 00:52:36.55\00:52:39.69 but as a nation, 00:52:39.72\00:52:41.06 they forfeited that right as you see there 00:52:41.09\00:52:43.53 in the Book of Daniel Chapter 8. 00:52:43.56\00:52:45.16 And then you can read the Book of Romans to see 00:52:45.19\00:52:47.46 how this is established 00:52:47.50\00:52:48.83 all throughout the New Testament. 00:52:48.86\00:52:50.20 You see what happened with the people of Israel. 00:52:50.23\00:52:52.20 Opportunities were given to them 00:52:52.23\00:52:54.14 over and over and over again. 00:52:54.17\00:52:56.40 But everyone has an opportunity to come to Jesus. 00:52:56.44\00:53:00.58 And what was said in Isaiah Chapter 1 00:53:00.61\00:53:02.64 to the people of Israel? 00:53:02.68\00:53:04.01 God says to people today, notice this in verse 18 and 19, 00:53:04.05\00:53:07.45 "Come now and let us reason together, 00:53:07.48\00:53:09.75 says the Lord, though your sins be a scarlet, 00:53:09.78\00:53:12.95 they shall be as white as snow. 00:53:12.99\00:53:14.69 Though they be red like crimson, 00:53:14.72\00:53:16.56 they shall be as wool." 00:53:16.59\00:53:18.56 Praise God. 00:53:18.59\00:53:20.53 Notice, if ye be willing and obedient, 00:53:20.56\00:53:25.07 you shall eat the good of the land. 00:53:25.10\00:53:27.87 Promised back then, and promised to us today. 00:53:27.90\00:53:31.74 If you are willing and obedient, 00:53:31.77\00:53:33.54 you will eat the good of the land 00:53:33.58\00:53:35.21 of the New Jerusalem. 00:53:35.24\00:53:37.21 God has blessings 00:53:37.25\00:53:39.15 that we cannot even imagine for God's people. 00:53:39.18\00:53:43.65 And so we've been talking about the Mediator 00:53:43.69\00:53:45.45 of the New Covenant, Jesus Christ. 00:53:45.49\00:53:47.12 And notice what Romans 5:8 says, 00:53:47.16\00:53:51.16 "But God demonstrate His own love toward us, 00:53:51.19\00:53:56.13 in that while we were still sinners, 00:53:56.16\00:53:58.53 Christ died for us." 00:53:58.57\00:54:00.84 While these sins were written with the pen of iron 00:54:00.87\00:54:03.97 and the diamond in the heart, 00:54:04.01\00:54:07.08 Jesus dies for us to give us a new heart. 00:54:07.11\00:54:12.18 And so in Ezekiel 36:26-27, it says, 00:54:12.21\00:54:16.69 "I will give you a new heart, 00:54:16.72\00:54:18.92 and put a new spirit within you. 00:54:18.95\00:54:21.66 I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh, 00:54:21.69\00:54:24.83 and give you a heart of flesh. 00:54:24.86\00:54:28.03 I will put My Spirit within you, 00:54:28.06\00:54:30.57 and cause you to walk in My statutes, 00:54:30.60\00:54:33.07 and you will keep My judgments and do them." 00:54:33.10\00:54:36.54 So praise God for this offer that He wants to do 00:54:36.57\00:54:41.48 in each and every one of us. 00:54:41.51\00:54:43.45 Isn't God good? 00:54:43.48\00:54:44.81 God is merciful. God is wonderful. 00:54:44.85\00:54:47.25 And today you have that opportunity. 00:54:47.28\00:54:50.32 So I read again, Jeremiah 31:33, 00:54:50.35\00:54:53.46 "But this is the covenant 00:54:53.49\00:54:54.82 that I will make with the house of Israel. 00:54:54.86\00:54:57.33 All those that are willing today 00:54:57.36\00:54:58.96 after those days, says the Lord, 00:54:58.99\00:55:00.33 I will put My law in their minds 00:55:00.36\00:55:01.93 and write it on their hearts, 00:55:01.96\00:55:03.83 and I will be their God and they shall be My people." 00:55:03.87\00:55:06.40 In the heart, 00:55:06.43\00:55:08.07 they cannot be thrown to the ground 00:55:08.10\00:55:10.41 or hit with a hammer and broken, 00:55:10.44\00:55:12.64 they cannot be cut up and burned up. 00:55:12.67\00:55:14.74 They are a part of you. 00:55:14.78\00:55:16.91 And I encourage you to consider what God wants to do with you. 00:55:16.95\00:55:21.02 You see in the New Covenant as the lesson brings out, 00:55:21.05\00:55:23.95 it says the heart refers to the mind, 00:55:23.99\00:55:26.42 the origin of memory and understanding 00:55:26.45\00:55:28.56 and especially 00:55:28.59\00:55:29.92 to where conscious decisions are made. 00:55:29.96\00:55:32.66 God wants to transform us. 00:55:32.69\00:55:35.13 And I encourage you to allow Him to do the work, 00:55:35.16\00:55:38.03 marvelous work that He wants to do in you 00:55:38.07\00:55:40.10 that you may be His child and live eternally. 00:55:40.14\00:55:43.24 Amen and amen. 00:55:43.27\00:55:44.61 I just quickly want to expand on covenant in the Bible. 00:55:44.64\00:55:48.21 There are two types of covenant 00:55:48.24\00:55:49.71 one is a will that is called a diatheke. 00:55:49.74\00:55:53.82 That's when one person makes all the promises. 00:55:53.85\00:55:57.19 The other is a contract that syntheke between two parties. 00:55:57.22\00:56:01.42 All of God's covenants are diatheke. 00:56:01.46\00:56:04.16 It's God alone making the promises, 00:56:04.19\00:56:07.10 we enter through our loyalty 00:56:07.13\00:56:12.17 in covenant relationship with Him. 00:56:12.20\00:56:14.77 A quick comment on your day. 00:56:14.80\00:56:16.20 And the new and renewed is, in Isaiah 43:19, 00:56:16.24\00:56:19.71 "Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth, 00:56:19.74\00:56:24.25 shall you not know it? 00:56:24.28\00:56:26.08 I will even make a road in the wilderness 00:56:26.11\00:56:29.52 and rivers in the desert." 00:56:29.55\00:56:31.12 Under the New Covenant, 00:56:31.15\00:56:32.49 the Lord is making all the provision. 00:56:32.52\00:56:33.99 We are the benefactors of all the works that He does. 00:56:34.02\00:56:37.96 And the New Covenant has a better mediator 00:56:37.99\00:56:40.16 because Jesus Christ as a human 00:56:40.20\00:56:42.26 has intercepted all of our bad promises. 00:56:42.30\00:56:44.93 And He has made them good. 00:56:44.97\00:56:46.80 He's been faithful to God. Amen. 00:56:46.84\00:56:49.34 We can look at the New Covenant and say, 00:56:49.37\00:56:51.47 well, that's great, but it avails nothing 00:56:51.51\00:56:53.71 unless we make a choice. 00:56:53.74\00:56:55.08 We make a decision to accept Jesus 00:56:55.11\00:56:57.61 and accept His efficacy, 00:56:57.65\00:56:59.35 His blood on our behalf. 00:56:59.38\00:57:01.28 Amen. 00:57:01.32\00:57:02.65 I'm reading to you from one of my favorite books, 00:57:02.68\00:57:04.15 Desire of Ages, page 668. 00:57:04.19\00:57:06.62 All true obedience comes from the heart. 00:57:06.65\00:57:08.66 It was heart work with Christ. 00:57:08.69\00:57:10.66 And if we consent, He will so identify Himself 00:57:10.69\00:57:13.86 with our thoughts and aims, 00:57:13.90\00:57:15.23 so blend our hearts and minds into conformity to His will, 00:57:15.26\00:57:18.90 that when obeying Him we shall be 00:57:18.93\00:57:20.94 but carrying out our own impulses. 00:57:20.97\00:57:23.10 Praise the Lord. Amen. 00:57:23.14\00:57:25.01 Do you remember when Jesus told His disciples, 00:57:25.04\00:57:28.01 I have so much more to tell you but you're not ready to learn? 00:57:28.04\00:57:31.58 You know, we can look and say, 00:57:31.61\00:57:33.01 why did God have a progression in His revelation 00:57:33.05\00:57:38.09 of the everlasting covenant? 00:57:38.12\00:57:40.16 Because people weren't ready to learn 00:57:40.19\00:57:42.86 so God just continues to build, to reveal Himself. 00:57:42.89\00:57:47.53 He came down in the flesh to reveal 00:57:47.56\00:57:50.83 the actual character of God. 00:57:50.87\00:57:54.50 We hope you've enjoyed today's lesson 00:57:54.54\00:57:56.64 as much as we have. 00:57:56.67\00:57:58.14 And lesson number nine is going to be Jesus, 00:57:58.17\00:58:03.01 the Perfect Sacrifice. 00:58:03.04\00:58:04.95 So join us again next week. 00:58:04.98\00:58:06.95 Bye-bye. 00:58:06.98\00:58:08.32
