Let's pray. 00:02:14.80\00:02:16.87 Father, thank You again so much for Jesus Christ. 00:02:16.90\00:02:19.33 Thank You for how much this book means to us, 00:02:19.37\00:02:22.04 this Book of Hebrews, in these last days, 00:02:22.07\00:02:24.87 and thank You that we can open these pages again, 00:02:24.91\00:02:28.08 we just pray that the Holy Spirit will be here 00:02:28.11\00:02:30.01 with us and also with everyone 00:02:30.05\00:02:31.65 who's viewing that You will touch our hearts 00:02:31.68\00:02:34.48 that You will draw us to heaven. 00:02:34.52\00:02:35.85 We pray this in Jesus' name, amen. 00:02:35.88\00:02:38.25 Amen. 00:02:38.29\00:02:39.62 So last week's lesson was an incredible study. 00:02:39.65\00:02:41.52 I was so blessed by it. 00:02:41.56\00:02:42.99 We studied Hebrews Chapter 5-7, did we not? 00:02:43.02\00:02:45.79 Just those three chapters, 00:02:45.83\00:02:47.36 and looked at Jesus as the faithful High Priest. 00:02:47.40\00:02:51.00 This week, Jesus, the Anchor for the Soul 00:02:51.03\00:02:53.60 is really a parenthetical insertion 00:02:53.64\00:02:57.04 into what we studied last week. 00:02:57.07\00:02:58.51 Now, you say what in the world are you talking about, Jill? 00:02:58.54\00:03:00.74 Well, I studied English that was my degree in school. 00:03:00.78\00:03:03.41 And parentheses is a word or a clause, 00:03:03.45\00:03:08.12 something that's inserted as an explanation 00:03:08.15\00:03:11.09 or an afterthought into a passage, 00:03:11.12\00:03:13.25 but the passage would be grammatically complete 00:03:13.29\00:03:15.66 without it. 00:03:15.69\00:03:17.03 So all we're studying the entire panel today, 00:03:17.06\00:03:20.10 we're studying a parentheses. 00:03:20.13\00:03:21.80 It's this insertion into Hebrews Chapters 5-7, 00:03:21.83\00:03:26.40 we're going to study Hebrews 5:11, 00:03:26.43\00:03:29.10 all the way through the end of Chapter 6. 00:03:29.14\00:03:31.97 That is the parenthetical insertion 00:03:32.01\00:03:34.64 into the theological exposition on Jesus as the High Priest. 00:03:34.68\00:03:39.68 So this parenthetical insertion has two portions, 00:03:39.71\00:03:42.92 the first portion is a warning. 00:03:42.95\00:03:45.55 It's the danger of falling away from Christ, 00:03:45.59\00:03:48.39 the danger of spiritual immaturity, 00:03:48.42\00:03:51.06 the danger of becoming discouraged in the journey, 00:03:51.09\00:03:53.90 the danger of apostasy from God 00:03:53.93\00:03:56.30 or even open rebellion against God. 00:03:56.33\00:03:59.63 But it's followed, 00:03:59.67\00:04:01.00 the second part of this parentheses 00:04:01.04\00:04:03.37 is encouragement. 00:04:03.41\00:04:04.74 Jesus is the way of salvation. He's our hope. 00:04:04.77\00:04:07.44 He is our High Priest. 00:04:07.48\00:04:09.24 Through Him, we have immediate access to the Father. 00:04:09.28\00:04:13.21 The promises given to Israel are extended to us. 00:04:13.25\00:04:16.52 The hope given to Israel is given to us. 00:04:16.55\00:04:19.92 You and I today can have assurance, 00:04:19.95\00:04:22.52 we can have hope, we can have peace, 00:04:22.56\00:04:24.56 victory and salvation. 00:04:24.59\00:04:26.43 We're going to cover all of that 00:04:26.46\00:04:28.00 in these parentheses around of Hebrews Chapters 5-6. 00:04:28.03\00:04:32.73 Our memory verse is Hebrews 6:19-20. 00:04:32.77\00:04:35.74 Let's take a look at that. 00:04:35.77\00:04:37.11 Hebrews 6:19-20. 00:04:37.14\00:04:41.14 "This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, 00:04:41.18\00:04:43.01 both secure and steadfast, 00:04:43.04\00:04:45.35 which enters the presence behind the veil, 00:04:45.38\00:04:48.08 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, 00:04:48.12\00:04:51.92 having become High Priest forever according to the order 00:04:51.95\00:04:55.99 of Melchizedek. 00:04:56.02\00:04:58.29 On Sunday's lesson, we tackle a passage 00:04:58.33\00:05:00.63 that can be a little complicated, 00:05:00.66\00:05:02.70 and I'm just doing the very first portion of it, 00:05:02.73\00:05:05.47 'cause Pastor James and Pastor John here 00:05:05.50\00:05:07.07 are going to cover it even more. 00:05:07.10\00:05:09.10 Sunday's title is Tasting the Goodness of the Word. 00:05:09.14\00:05:14.48 You know, they say that Rome wasn't built in a day, 00:05:14.51\00:05:17.25 you heard that expression? 00:05:17.28\00:05:18.61 Yep. 00:05:18.65\00:05:19.98 And I would suggest to you 00:05:20.02\00:05:21.52 that a marriage doesn't crumble in a day. 00:05:21.55\00:05:24.55 You don't go from marital bliss to the next day, 00:05:24.59\00:05:28.06 I hate you, and I'm going to divorce you. 00:05:28.09\00:05:30.39 It's a process to get from A to Z, 00:05:30.43\00:05:32.79 it would be a process that takes time. 00:05:32.83\00:05:35.06 Your child doesn't walk away from Jesus in a day, 00:05:35.10\00:05:37.57 it's a process, daily choices, 00:05:37.60\00:05:40.67 where there may be in love with Jesus, 00:05:40.70\00:05:42.70 and all of a sudden, you end up over here and say, 00:05:42.74\00:05:45.67 "I don't even know if I know this person, 00:05:45.71\00:05:47.54 because they've so turned away from God." 00:05:47.58\00:05:50.38 An employee of an organization is never terminated in a day. 00:05:50.41\00:05:54.02 It's a process that takes much time 00:05:54.05\00:05:57.52 and discussion before that decision is reached. 00:05:57.55\00:06:02.09 You know, we all make choices in life, 00:06:02.12\00:06:03.93 our thoughts impact our feelings, 00:06:03.96\00:06:07.40 do they not? 00:06:07.43\00:06:08.76 Our feelings become our words and our words, 00:06:08.80\00:06:12.03 of course, actions, 00:06:12.07\00:06:13.47 and then habits and then character. 00:06:13.50\00:06:16.14 And that becomes our destiny. 00:06:16.17\00:06:17.61 So, you know, it starts back in the mind. 00:06:17.64\00:06:19.87 We say, "Okay, well, you just did such and such, 00:06:19.91\00:06:22.34 and that became your destiny." 00:06:22.38\00:06:23.71 No, our thoughts, 00:06:23.75\00:06:25.45 the thoughts that we have and the feelings 00:06:25.48\00:06:27.52 that we hold on to, 00:06:27.55\00:06:28.88 you take that to its logical progression, 00:06:28.92\00:06:31.09 and you end up over here with your destiny 00:06:31.12\00:06:33.29 and where it is determined. 00:06:33.32\00:06:35.19 So I want to look at this passage with that in mind. 00:06:35.22\00:06:38.73 We're in Hebrews 6, 00:06:38.76\00:06:40.66 we're going to pick it up in verse 4. 00:06:40.70\00:06:43.67 "It is impossible for those who were once enlightened, 00:06:43.70\00:06:47.44 and have tasted the heavenly gift." 00:06:47.47\00:06:49.10 We're going to go back and explore all of these verbs. 00:06:49.14\00:06:51.77 Enlightened is the first, 00:06:51.81\00:06:53.88 tasted the heavenly gift is the second, 00:06:53.91\00:06:56.31 become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 00:06:56.34\00:06:58.61 that's the third, tasted the good word of God, 00:06:58.65\00:07:02.05 that's the fourth, 00:07:02.08\00:07:03.42 and the powers of the age to come, 00:07:03.45\00:07:05.32 that's the fifth, 00:07:05.35\00:07:06.69 if they fall away to renew them again to repentance. 00:07:06.72\00:07:09.86 So let's take a look at this. 00:07:09.89\00:07:11.23 The believers were converted, were they not? 00:07:11.26\00:07:14.43 They were once enlightened, what does that mean? 00:07:14.46\00:07:17.93 I'm reminded of Paul, this is in Acts 26, 00:07:17.97\00:07:20.20 his defense. 00:07:20.24\00:07:21.57 Acts 26:17-18, and what does he say? 00:07:21.60\00:07:24.84 This is God speaking to him, 00:07:24.87\00:07:26.27 "I will deliver you from the Jewish people 00:07:26.31\00:07:28.88 as well as from the Gentiles to whom I now send you 00:07:28.91\00:07:32.25 to open their eyes in order to turn them from darkness 00:07:32.28\00:07:35.72 to light, from the power of Satan 00:07:35.75\00:07:38.09 to the power of God, 00:07:38.12\00:07:39.49 that they may receive forgiveness of sins 00:07:39.52\00:07:42.02 and then inheritance among those who are sanctified 00:07:42.06\00:07:44.93 by faith in Me." 00:07:44.96\00:07:46.80 Paul's really talking about the commission 00:07:46.83\00:07:48.66 that he received from the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:07:48.70\00:07:52.37 But what was part of that? 00:07:52.40\00:07:54.40 He was to open up their eyes. 00:07:54.44\00:07:57.64 Reminds me of Colossians 1:13, 00:07:57.67\00:08:00.51 God's delivered us from the power of darkness 00:08:00.54\00:08:03.24 and conveyed us into the kingdom 00:08:03.28\00:08:04.75 of God's dear Son. 00:08:04.78\00:08:07.65 So, these people were once enlightened, 00:08:07.68\00:08:10.75 what does that mean? 00:08:10.79\00:08:12.29 They knew God. 00:08:12.32\00:08:13.66 They were enlightened. 00:08:13.69\00:08:15.02 They understood they had been transformed 00:08:15.06\00:08:17.03 out of darkness, 00:08:17.06\00:08:18.39 into the kingdom of God's dear Son. 00:08:18.43\00:08:20.33 They were walking in the light of the glory of God. 00:08:20.36\00:08:23.73 But it doesn't stop there. 00:08:23.77\00:08:25.10 They tasted the heavenly gift. 00:08:25.13\00:08:26.90 You know, Psalm 34:8, 00:08:26.94\00:08:29.04 is a pivotal verse in my own experience, 00:08:29.07\00:08:31.47 because of this verse, 00:08:31.51\00:08:33.04 I made a choice to follow Jesus. 00:08:33.07\00:08:34.74 Psalm 34:8, just says, 00:08:34.78\00:08:36.41 "Taste and see that the Lord is good. 00:08:36.44\00:08:38.51 Blessed is the man or woman who trust in Him." 00:08:38.55\00:08:41.88 And because of that verse in my own life, 00:08:41.92\00:08:44.32 I said, "Okay, God, I'm going to try You." 00:08:44.35\00:08:46.49 And I actually gave Him two weeks, 00:08:46.52\00:08:47.89 which I'm not sure I recommend. 00:08:47.92\00:08:49.32 But I said two weeks, I want to see are You real? 00:08:49.36\00:08:52.56 Are Your promises real? 00:08:52.59\00:08:54.03 Are you a real God? 00:08:54.06\00:08:55.40 Can You do what You say in the Bible? 00:08:55.43\00:08:57.33 And if in two weeks You don't show Yourself to me, 00:08:57.37\00:08:59.80 then I'm done with You. 00:08:59.83\00:09:01.77 And in those two weeks He so revealed who He was. 00:09:01.80\00:09:05.74 What was that? 00:09:05.77\00:09:07.11 That was tasting God for myself. 00:09:07.14\00:09:09.14 I tasted and saw that He was good. 00:09:09.18\00:09:11.41 So those who have tasted of the heavenly gift 00:09:11.45\00:09:13.72 clearly have experienced God for themselves. 00:09:13.75\00:09:17.42 Let's look at the third verb. 00:09:17.45\00:09:19.79 They tasted the heavenly gift, that's the second. 00:09:19.82\00:09:21.56 The third is, they became partakers of the Holy Spirit. 00:09:21.59\00:09:25.23 You know, in Galatians 5 tells us 00:09:25.26\00:09:26.70 when we walk into spirit, 00:09:26.73\00:09:28.06 we don't partake of the works of the flesh. 00:09:28.10\00:09:30.80 If we have partaken of the Holy Spirit, clearly, 00:09:30.83\00:09:33.54 we're walking with God. 00:09:33.57\00:09:35.10 We have the infilling of the Holy Spirit 00:09:35.14\00:09:37.54 as Shelley always talks about pray for every day, 00:09:37.57\00:09:40.14 the infilling of the Holy Spirit. 00:09:40.18\00:09:42.18 What's the fourth thing? They tasted of the Word of God. 00:09:42.21\00:09:45.78 I'm reminded of 1 Peter 2:2-3, Peter talking, 00:09:45.81\00:09:49.82 "As newborn babes, 00:09:49.85\00:09:51.19 desire the pure milk of the word, 00:09:51.22\00:09:53.69 that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted 00:09:53.72\00:09:57.03 that the Lord is gracious." 00:09:57.06\00:09:59.56 So, they were enlightened by the Spirit, 00:09:59.59\00:10:02.93 they partook of the Spirit, 00:10:02.96\00:10:04.73 they had tasted of the goodness of God, 00:10:04.77\00:10:07.30 they had tasted His Word, they had walked in His Word. 00:10:07.34\00:10:11.47 And then it says, the power of the age to come. 00:10:11.51\00:10:14.14 This refers to the miracles 00:10:14.18\00:10:15.94 that God will perform for the believer in the future, 00:10:15.98\00:10:18.35 as well as the miracles in the present 00:10:18.38\00:10:21.68 that He wants to do. 00:10:21.72\00:10:23.25 And yet, in spite of all this, in spite of walking with God, 00:10:23.28\00:10:26.69 in spite of knowing His Word, 00:10:26.72\00:10:28.06 in spite of partaking of the Holy Spirit, 00:10:28.09\00:10:30.59 you mean, they're going to fall away? 00:10:30.63\00:10:32.59 You mean, they're going to turn away? 00:10:32.63\00:10:34.26 Remember, we started at the beginning, 00:10:34.30\00:10:35.83 you don't go from A to Z in a day. 00:10:35.86\00:10:37.80 So that decision does not happen overnight. 00:10:37.83\00:10:41.20 You cannot be on fire for God, walking in the Spirit, 00:10:41.24\00:10:45.47 being in His Word, witnessing, 00:10:45.51\00:10:48.04 tasting and seeing that the Lord is good. 00:10:48.08\00:10:50.28 And you go from here to apostasy, 00:10:50.31\00:10:54.62 to spiritual lethargy, to apathy, 00:10:54.65\00:10:57.19 to walking away from God. 00:10:57.22\00:10:59.65 There is a progression of the hardening of the heart. 00:10:59.69\00:11:03.36 And I would submit to you from this passage, 00:11:03.39\00:11:05.13 I see three steps in that progression. 00:11:05.16\00:11:08.43 The first step is hardness of hearing, 00:11:08.46\00:11:11.83 or the inability to listen 00:11:11.87\00:11:13.80 and where we find that we just go back 00:11:13.84\00:11:15.27 a couple verses. 00:11:15.30\00:11:16.64 We're in Hebrews 5, we were in Hebrews 6, 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.34 just go back to Hebrews 5:10-11. 00:11:18.37\00:11:21.84 It says, "Called by God a High Priest 00:11:21.88\00:11:23.38 according to the order of Melchizedek, 00:11:23.41\00:11:25.18 of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain," why? 00:11:25.21\00:11:29.88 "Since you became dull of hearing." 00:11:29.92\00:11:35.16 When I was growing up, we used to say to my dad, 00:11:35.19\00:11:38.59 when he was reading, he didn't hear anything else 00:11:38.63\00:11:40.73 but all he did was focus on what he's reading. 00:11:40.76\00:11:43.40 And my sister and I would tease him 00:11:43.43\00:11:44.87 and we would come in and we would say, 00:11:44.90\00:11:46.50 "Hey, Daddy, can we have this?" 00:11:46.53\00:11:48.27 "Uh-huh." "Hey, Daddy, what about this?" 00:11:48.30\00:11:51.11 "Uh-huh." "Hey, Daddy, what about this?" 00:11:51.14\00:11:53.48 Because he's not listening, right? 00:11:53.51\00:11:54.94 He's reading. 00:11:54.98\00:11:56.31 And then we'd always follow it up. 00:11:56.34\00:11:57.68 This was our joke, we always ended with, 00:11:57.71\00:11:59.05 "Is your head chopped off?" 00:11:59.08\00:12:00.62 And he would say, "Uh-huh." 00:12:00.65\00:12:03.39 So the truth is, 00:12:03.42\00:12:05.45 we hear what we want to hear, do we not? 00:12:05.49\00:12:08.06 We can be so absorbed. 00:12:08.09\00:12:09.69 God wanted to explain, God wanted to tell, 00:12:09.72\00:12:12.19 God wanted to teach, and they were dull of hearing. 00:12:12.23\00:12:15.56 Are you dull of hearing? 00:12:15.60\00:12:17.17 Have you, do you have hardness of hearing, 00:12:17.20\00:12:20.40 the inability to listen? 00:12:20.44\00:12:23.07 Hebrews 3:15, "Today, if you hear His voice, 00:12:23.10\00:12:25.87 do not harden your hearts." 00:12:25.91\00:12:27.64 When God speaks to your heart, your spirit. 00:12:27.68\00:12:31.18 Maybe you have walked with God for years 00:12:31.21\00:12:33.21 and you've tasted and partaken of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:33.25\00:12:36.58 But if He speaks to you in a certain area of your life, 00:12:36.62\00:12:40.62 and you don't want to listen, you begin to harden your heart. 00:12:40.66\00:12:44.36 That leads to number two, 00:12:44.39\00:12:45.76 the hardness of hearing or the inability to listen 00:12:45.79\00:12:48.10 leads to number two, 00:12:48.13\00:12:49.46 which is the hardness of heart to obey. 00:12:49.50\00:12:53.00 James 1:22, 00:12:53.03\00:12:54.57 "Be doers of the word and not hearers only, 00:12:54.60\00:12:58.44 deceiving your own selves." 00:12:58.47\00:12:59.87 This is the inability to do what you know is right. 00:12:59.91\00:13:02.81 Not only are we supposed to listen 00:13:02.84\00:13:04.58 when God speaks to us, 00:13:04.61\00:13:06.01 we need to walk in obedience to what He tells us to do. 00:13:06.05\00:13:10.15 And step number three 00:13:10.19\00:13:11.92 is the difficulty in understanding 00:13:11.95\00:13:14.82 spiritual things. 00:13:14.86\00:13:16.22 I believe step one and two are combined, 00:13:16.26\00:13:19.46 the inability to hear and the inability to obey. 00:13:19.49\00:13:22.90 They're combined to form a lack of spiritual maturity. 00:13:22.93\00:13:26.94 We see this in Hebrews 5:12, "Though by this time, 00:13:26.97\00:13:30.11 you ought to be teachers, 00:13:30.14\00:13:31.47 you need someone to teach you again 00:13:31.51\00:13:33.17 the first principles of the oracles of God, 00:13:33.21\00:13:35.61 you have come to need milk and not solid food. 00:13:35.64\00:13:38.28 For everyone who partakes only of milk 00:13:38.31\00:13:40.32 is unskilled in the word of righteousness. 00:13:40.35\00:13:42.78 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, 00:13:42.82\00:13:46.62 that is, those who by reason of use 00:13:46.65\00:13:48.46 have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." 00:13:48.49\00:13:53.23 So what is Paul saying? 00:13:53.26\00:13:54.60 He's saying here that they lack spiritual maturity, 00:13:54.63\00:13:58.13 and they lack spiritual discernment. 00:13:58.17\00:13:59.83 And why is that? 00:13:59.87\00:14:01.20 Because they began first, 00:14:01.24\00:14:02.57 they neglected to listen to what God tried to tell them. 00:14:02.60\00:14:07.11 So my appeal to you, listen when God speaks, 00:14:07.14\00:14:11.08 be open to hear His voice, and be quick to obey. 00:14:11.11\00:14:15.68 Amen. I really liked that. 00:14:15.72\00:14:17.29 I was actually taking notes right there 00:14:17.32\00:14:19.35 and learning some things. 00:14:19.39\00:14:20.72 I was really excited about getting this lesson. 00:14:20.76\00:14:23.49 My name is James Rafferty, 00:14:23.53\00:14:24.99 and I have Monday's lesson Impossible to Restore. 00:14:25.03\00:14:28.53 And as the lessons were being divvied out here and there, 00:14:28.56\00:14:32.43 I was looking through and thinking 00:14:32.47\00:14:33.80 which ones do I have? 00:14:33.84\00:14:35.17 Which ones do I have? 00:14:35.20\00:14:36.54 And I landed on this one, 00:14:36.57\00:14:37.91 find out that also John has this one too, 00:14:37.94\00:14:39.54 so we're kind of sharing it, 00:14:39.57\00:14:40.91 but this is a really significant one for me. 00:14:40.94\00:14:44.05 And the reason why is because 00:14:44.08\00:14:46.31 this is a big question as the pastors 00:14:46.35\00:14:48.68 and evangelists that is asked constantly, 00:14:48.72\00:14:51.65 people continually point to Hebrews Chapter 6, 00:14:51.69\00:14:54.86 and to Hebrews Chapter 10, and basically say, 00:14:54.89\00:14:57.86 "You know, is there any hope for me? 00:14:57.89\00:15:00.03 Is this my experience? 00:15:00.06\00:15:01.40 What does this mean? 00:15:01.43\00:15:02.76 If I sin, is God, there's no way I can be restored." 00:15:02.80\00:15:06.40 And that's the title of this lesson 00:15:06.43\00:15:08.14 is Impossible to Restore. 00:15:08.17\00:15:10.87 Now I came to this lesson filled with all kinds of ideas 00:15:10.91\00:15:14.51 and thoughts that I was just ready to share. 00:15:14.54\00:15:16.81 And then I read the lesson, I was like, 00:15:16.85\00:15:19.38 "Wow, this guy knocked it out of the park." 00:15:19.41\00:15:23.79 I just, I can't, I just thought this is so good. 00:15:23.82\00:15:26.59 I just we just got to go through what's written here 00:15:26.62\00:15:28.42 because it's so good. 00:15:28.46\00:15:29.79 So we're going to start by just rehashing a little bit. 00:15:29.82\00:15:32.13 We're going to look at Hebrews 4:6-8. 00:15:32.16\00:15:35.06 Those are the verses that we're going to be covering, 00:15:35.10\00:15:36.97 Hebrews 4:6-8. 00:15:37.00\00:15:38.37 There are a number of other verses, 00:15:38.40\00:15:39.73 they kind of build this, build on this. 00:15:39.77\00:15:41.10 And we'll look at those as we go through the outline, 00:15:41.14\00:15:43.07 but Hebrews 4:6-8, let's just start with verse 4. 00:15:43.10\00:15:46.01 "For it is impossible 00:15:46.04\00:15:48.48 for those who were once enlightened, 00:15:48.51\00:15:50.71 and have tasted the heavenly gift, 00:15:50.75\00:15:52.58 and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost." 00:15:52.61\00:15:54.78 Excuse me. I'm sorry. You said, Hebrews... 00:15:54.82\00:15:56.15 Hebrews 6. Hebrews 6... 00:15:56.18\00:15:57.52 Oh, I'm sorry, Hebrews 6. Okay, we're in Hebrews 4. 00:15:57.55\00:16:00.56 Yeah, it's Hebrews 6:4, got, thank you. 00:16:00.59\00:16:02.82 Okay. Hebrews 6:4-6, 4-6. 00:16:02.86\00:16:05.06 All right. 00:16:05.09\00:16:06.46 "For it is impossible 00:16:06.49\00:16:07.83 for those who have once enlightened 00:16:07.86\00:16:09.46 and have tasted the heavenly gift, 00:16:09.50\00:16:11.53 and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 00:16:11.57\00:16:14.37 and have tasted the good Word of God, 00:16:14.40\00:16:17.51 and the powers of the world to come." 00:16:17.54\00:16:19.01 All those verses that Jill has shared with us, 00:16:19.04\00:16:21.04 all those phrases. 00:16:21.08\00:16:22.64 "If," verse 6, "they shall fall away, 00:16:22.68\00:16:24.88 to renew them again unto repentance, 00:16:24.91\00:16:28.35 seeing they crucified to themselves, 00:16:28.38\00:16:30.75 the Son of God afresh, and put Him to open shame." 00:16:30.79\00:16:35.79 Now, there is a significance, a seriousness here. 00:16:35.82\00:16:39.33 When you read these verses, 00:16:39.36\00:16:40.70 you think they should kind of grab you, 00:16:40.73\00:16:42.10 and they should kind of remind you 00:16:42.13\00:16:44.17 of how important it is for us 00:16:44.20\00:16:46.23 to hold on to the enlightenment, 00:16:46.27\00:16:49.24 to the power, to everything that we've tasted of God, 00:16:49.27\00:16:53.94 and to not let that slip. 00:16:53.98\00:16:56.08 As Jill was sharing, you know, this, 00:16:56.11\00:16:58.01 does this process doesn't take place overnight. 00:16:58.05\00:17:00.65 It may look like it took place overnight, 00:17:00.68\00:17:03.52 but it's a long protracted process 00:17:03.55\00:17:05.62 that starts in our brains. 00:17:05.65\00:17:07.12 We may still put up the form of religion 00:17:07.16\00:17:09.46 and going to church and doing all the things 00:17:09.49\00:17:10.89 we're supposed to do. 00:17:10.93\00:17:12.26 But if our heart and our mind 00:17:12.29\00:17:13.63 is not connected intimately with God, 00:17:13.66\00:17:15.90 that process is already taking place. 00:17:15.93\00:17:17.77 Right. 00:17:17.80\00:17:19.13 And we know this because this is the experience 00:17:19.17\00:17:20.74 of Revelation Chapter 3's Laodicean Church. 00:17:20.77\00:17:24.24 They are already having this experience, 00:17:24.27\00:17:26.04 because Jesus is on the outside knocking to come in. 00:17:26.07\00:17:30.31 They're not supping with Him, 00:17:30.35\00:17:31.68 but they feel like they're rich 00:17:31.71\00:17:33.05 and increase with goods and don't need anything. 00:17:33.08\00:17:34.42 They're not even aware of their miserable condition. 00:17:34.45\00:17:36.92 And then one day, 00:17:36.95\00:17:38.29 they're just going to be spewed out of the mouth of Christ. 00:17:38.32\00:17:41.32 So this is significant. 00:17:41.36\00:17:42.96 It's an important point 00:17:42.99\00:17:44.33 that we need to look at in the Book of Hebrews, 00:17:44.36\00:17:45.96 'cause the Book of Hebrews is just filled 00:17:45.99\00:17:48.36 with all the promises and the beauty 00:17:48.40\00:17:50.43 of covenant relationship and our focus on Jesus 00:17:50.47\00:17:53.23 as our High Priest and the better things. 00:17:53.27\00:17:55.94 But then we get this right in the middle of it all. 00:17:55.97\00:17:57.77 Look out. 00:17:57.81\00:17:59.24 What does this mean? 00:17:59.27\00:18:00.61 While I love the way the author of the Book of Hebrews has, 00:18:00.64\00:18:05.25 the quarterly has described this, 00:18:05.28\00:18:07.42 he says here, the original text in the Greek emphasizes 00:18:07.45\00:18:11.65 the word impossible, a lot of emphasis there. 00:18:11.69\00:18:14.79 It is impossible for God to restore those 00:18:14.82\00:18:17.93 who have fallen away because they are crucified once 00:18:17.96\00:18:21.96 again the Son of God, Hebrews 6:6. 00:18:22.00\00:18:25.40 Paul wants to stress that it is, 00:18:25.43\00:18:27.47 there is no other way of salvation, 00:18:27.50\00:18:29.50 except through Christ. 00:18:29.54\00:18:31.84 Salvation by any other means is impossible, 00:18:31.87\00:18:35.41 as it is for God to lie, Hebrews 6:18. 00:18:35.44\00:18:37.55 To please God without faith, Hebrews 11:6. 00:18:37.58\00:18:40.92 I want to just pause right there in the quarterly 00:18:40.95\00:18:42.88 and just emphasize this point, 00:18:42.92\00:18:44.62 because it's so profound to me, it's so powerful. 00:18:44.65\00:18:47.62 And this was really what I was going to share 00:18:47.66\00:18:49.06 outside of the quarterly and that is, 00:18:49.09\00:18:50.89 is that the point that Hebrews is making here 00:18:50.93\00:18:53.60 is not that it's impossible for us to be forgiven, 00:18:53.63\00:18:55.66 it's not that it's impossible for us to have a mediator. 00:18:55.70\00:18:57.87 It's not that it's impossible for us 00:18:57.90\00:18:59.73 to find the blood of Christ cleans us. 00:18:59.77\00:19:01.60 What the point that the author is making, 00:19:01.64\00:19:03.94 that Paul is making and, of course, 00:19:03.97\00:19:05.74 the quarterly is making is the impossibility 00:19:05.77\00:19:08.54 is if we turn away from the mediation of Christ, 00:19:08.58\00:19:11.91 if we turn away from the sacrifice of Jesus, 00:19:11.95\00:19:14.52 if we turn away from the Holy Spirit, 00:19:14.55\00:19:16.82 if we turn away from everything we've tasted of God, 00:19:16.85\00:19:19.69 there's no other means of salvation. 00:19:19.72\00:19:22.52 You see, he was writing to the Hebrews 00:19:22.56\00:19:24.36 and the Hebrews had trusted for thousands of years 00:19:24.39\00:19:27.66 in the ceremonial system, in the sacrifices 00:19:27.70\00:19:30.33 that point to the types that pointed to Jesus, 00:19:30.37\00:19:32.97 they trusted in that. 00:19:33.00\00:19:34.34 And there was this danger that they might be overwhelmed 00:19:34.37\00:19:36.91 a little bit with the whole pressure 00:19:36.94\00:19:38.67 of the Judaizers or the pressure of the culture 00:19:38.71\00:19:41.61 and that they came from, 00:19:41.64\00:19:42.98 and the pressure of family relationships 00:19:43.01\00:19:44.75 that would draw them back into that and Paul saying, 00:19:44.78\00:19:46.68 "Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, don't go back there. 00:19:46.72\00:19:48.58 I know that you've trusted that all of these years 00:19:48.62\00:19:51.69 for these generations. 00:19:51.72\00:19:53.46 But you can't go back to that now." 00:19:53.49\00:19:55.12 It's impossible for you to find salvation in that system. 00:19:55.16\00:19:59.09 Don't go back to that system, 00:19:59.13\00:20:00.80 because you've tasted 00:20:00.83\00:20:02.16 of what all that system was pointing to, 00:20:02.20\00:20:03.90 and you've got to stick with 00:20:03.93\00:20:05.73 what it is that those things were pointing us 00:20:05.77\00:20:08.20 to and not go back to those symbols, 00:20:08.24\00:20:11.61 those representations, so to speak. 00:20:11.64\00:20:14.04 Then he goes on here in the quarterly, he says, 00:20:14.08\00:20:16.95 to crucify the Son of God, again, the Son of God 00:20:16.98\00:20:19.65 is a figurative expression that seeks to describe 00:20:19.68\00:20:23.52 something that happens in the personal relationship 00:20:23.55\00:20:26.69 between Jesus and the believer. 00:20:26.72\00:20:28.39 Now we're going to get down to the nitty-gritty. 00:20:28.42\00:20:30.59 When the religious leaders crucified Jesus, 00:20:30.63\00:20:33.46 they did it because Jesus posed a threat to their supremacy 00:20:33.50\00:20:37.80 and autonomy. 00:20:37.83\00:20:39.17 Okay, so here comes Jesus, He's the Messiah, 00:20:39.20\00:20:42.70 He's performing miracles, 00:20:42.74\00:20:44.24 He's preaching these amazing sermons 00:20:44.27\00:20:46.54 that people are gathering, hearts are being converted, 00:20:46.57\00:20:49.24 things are being turned upside down, 00:20:49.28\00:20:51.11 and the religious leaders don't feel like 00:20:51.15\00:20:52.81 they're the center anymore. 00:20:52.85\00:20:54.38 They're not the focus anymore. They're not in charge anymore. 00:20:54.42\00:20:57.29 And they haven't really put their confidence in Christ 00:20:57.32\00:21:00.16 or in John the Baptist. 00:21:00.19\00:21:01.76 And so Christ now becomes a threat to them, 00:21:01.79\00:21:04.66 He threatens their autonomy. 00:21:04.69\00:21:07.23 And this is the context we see in what leads 00:21:07.26\00:21:10.90 to the crucifixion of Jesus literally. 00:21:10.93\00:21:13.23 Thus, they hope to eliminate Jesus as a person 00:21:13.27\00:21:16.34 and destroy a powerful and dangerous enemy. 00:21:16.37\00:21:20.28 Similarly, the gospels challenge 00:21:20.31\00:21:23.14 the sovereignty and the self determination 00:21:23.18\00:21:26.38 of the individual at the most fundamental level, 00:21:26.41\00:21:30.92 that's us, right? 00:21:30.95\00:21:32.62 We are now being challenged by the gospel of Jesus Christ, 00:21:32.65\00:21:36.09 we are now being challenged by everything we're learning 00:21:36.12\00:21:38.79 in the Book of Hebrews, 00:21:38.83\00:21:40.16 that Jesus has accomplished for us 00:21:40.20\00:21:41.73 and does want to accomplish for us. 00:21:41.76\00:21:43.43 So the essence of the Christian life 00:21:43.47\00:21:45.33 is to take up the cross, deny oneself, 00:21:45.37\00:21:47.84 Matthew 16:24. 00:21:47.87\00:21:49.54 This means to crucify the world, 00:21:49.57\00:21:51.44 Galatians 6:14, the old man, Romans 6:6, 00:21:51.47\00:21:54.98 and the flesh with its passions and desires, Galatians 5:24. 00:21:55.01\00:21:59.68 The purpose of the Christian life 00:21:59.71\00:22:01.72 is that we undergo a kind of death. 00:22:01.75\00:22:04.69 Unless we experienced this death to self, 00:22:04.72\00:22:07.46 we cannot receive the new life 00:22:07.49\00:22:09.39 that God wants to give us, Romans 6:1-11. 00:22:09.42\00:22:12.49 The struggle between Jesus 00:22:12.53\00:22:14.80 and self is a struggle to death, 00:22:14.83\00:22:18.43 Romans 8:7, Galatians 5:17, Romans 8:7-8. 00:22:18.47\00:22:23.51 It is a difficult battle 00:22:23.54\00:22:25.34 that is not won once but every single day. 00:22:25.37\00:22:30.91 Paul says, I die daily. 00:22:30.95\00:22:33.21 I protest by your rejoicing, I die daily. 00:22:33.25\00:22:36.22 1 Corinthians 15:31, I'm running out of time here. 00:22:36.25\00:22:39.25 So, this is not talking. 00:22:39.29\00:22:43.09 This message, this passage is not referring 00:22:43.12\00:22:46.63 to a person who sometimes fall, 00:22:46.66\00:22:48.43 sometimes fails in the battle against 00:22:48.46\00:22:50.03 the old man in the flesh. 00:22:50.07\00:22:52.40 This sin refers to a person 00:22:52.43\00:22:53.94 who haven't experienced genuine salvation 00:22:53.97\00:22:56.40 and what it implies, Hebrews 6:4-5, 00:22:56.44\00:22:59.81 everything that you were sharing, Jill, 00:22:59.84\00:23:01.74 decides that Jesus is a threat to the kind of life 00:23:01.78\00:23:06.68 that he or she wants to have, right? 00:23:06.72\00:23:09.88 Because the Jews felt that Jesus was a threat to them. 00:23:09.92\00:23:12.05 So they crucified Him. 00:23:12.09\00:23:13.42 When we think, when we conclude, 00:23:13.46\00:23:15.46 when we come to the understanding 00:23:15.49\00:23:18.09 that Jesus is a threat to us, 00:23:18.13\00:23:19.76 that everything the gospel is bringing to us 00:23:19.79\00:23:22.06 is a threat to us, and we reject that, 00:23:22.10\00:23:24.40 you know, what we do? 00:23:24.43\00:23:25.77 We crucify the Son of God afresh, 00:23:25.80\00:23:27.87 and we put Him to open shame. 00:23:27.90\00:23:30.41 So we want to kill our relationship with Him. 00:23:30.44\00:23:35.44 That's what it's all about, friends, 00:23:35.48\00:23:36.81 it's about that relationship. 00:23:36.85\00:23:38.18 That is as long as the person does not fully come 00:23:38.21\00:23:41.68 to the place where they choose to turn away from Christ, 00:23:41.72\00:23:44.69 there is hope of salvation for them. 00:23:44.72\00:23:47.66 I just want to reiterate this as I close out the section. 00:23:47.69\00:23:50.96 This impossibility does not apply to anyone 00:23:50.99\00:23:55.56 who is still turning to the Lord, 00:23:55.60\00:23:57.93 still believing there's hope for them in Jesus Christ. 00:23:57.97\00:24:01.54 So to crucify Christ afresh is to reject Him, 00:24:01.57\00:24:04.34 it's to reject the Holy Spirit, it's to reject the gospels, 00:24:04.37\00:24:07.14 it's to reject the New Covenant, 00:24:07.18\00:24:08.64 it's to reject everything we're talking about here. 00:24:08.68\00:24:10.78 And if you haven't done that, there is still hope for you, 00:24:10.81\00:24:13.31 friends, there is still hope, 00:24:13.35\00:24:14.95 if your heart is still open to receive Jesus Christ. 00:24:14.98\00:24:18.22 Amen. Thank you so much, Pastor James. 00:24:18.25\00:24:20.82 I love that it is a serious passage, 00:24:20.86\00:24:23.06 but there is hope. 00:24:23.09\00:24:24.43 There's a lot more to come, we're going to take a break 00:24:24.46\00:24:26.13 and we'll be right back. 00:24:26.16\00:24:27.50 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:32.27\00:24:33.60 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:24:33.64\00:24:35.67 or Jesus, the Anchor of the Soul, 00:25:02.30\00:25:05.63 and we're going to kick it over to Pastor John Dinzey 00:25:05.67\00:25:07.60 in Tuesday's lesson. 00:25:07.64\00:25:09.40 Yes, this is now moving into 00:25:09.44\00:25:12.24 No Sacrifice for Sins Left, 00:25:12.27\00:25:15.74 No Sacrifice for Sins Left. 00:25:15.78\00:25:17.98 It's a very interesting lesson. 00:25:18.01\00:25:19.78 We again go through Hebrews Chapter 4, 00:25:19.81\00:25:23.79 Hebrews 6:4-6. 00:25:23.82\00:25:26.49 You see, there's a very similar warning in Hebrews 10:26-29, 00:25:26.52\00:25:31.19 and that's where I'm going to focus mostly on. 00:25:31.23\00:25:34.16 Once again, I will read Hebrews 6:4-6, 00:25:34.20\00:25:36.53 "For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, 00:25:36.56\00:25:40.00 and have tasted the heavenly gift 00:25:40.04\00:25:41.57 and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 00:25:41.60\00:25:44.34 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers 00:25:44.37\00:25:47.44 of the age to come, if they fall away, 00:25:47.48\00:25:50.58 to renew them again to repentance, 00:25:50.61\00:25:52.21 since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, 00:25:52.25\00:25:55.45 and put Him to open shame." 00:25:55.48\00:25:58.02 I have run into people in evangelistic campaigns 00:25:58.05\00:26:00.36 that they've been gone from the Lord, 00:26:00.39\00:26:02.46 they spent several years away. 00:26:02.49\00:26:04.63 And this is like Pastor James said, 00:26:04.66\00:26:07.40 this is an obstacle for they wonder 00:26:07.43\00:26:09.13 if they can come back. 00:26:09.16\00:26:11.10 I see some experienced 00:26:11.13\00:26:13.67 that is not regular here in these verses, 00:26:13.70\00:26:16.04 that person has really tried 00:26:16.07\00:26:19.64 to solidify their relationship with the Lord. 00:26:19.67\00:26:21.64 And this is why they name all these different elements 00:26:21.68\00:26:24.38 or the experience of the individual, 00:26:24.41\00:26:26.61 that gain that experience with the Lord, 00:26:26.65\00:26:30.22 that they fall away, 00:26:30.25\00:26:32.75 and then it becomes impossible for them to return. 00:26:32.79\00:26:35.89 And these are the people that, you know, who come, 00:26:35.92\00:26:37.69 they come to evangelistic campaigns wondering 00:26:37.73\00:26:39.46 because they still feel like 00:26:39.49\00:26:41.73 there's a pulling of the Holy Spirit, 00:26:41.76\00:26:43.30 but they don't understand what's going on. 00:26:43.33\00:26:45.77 So these people have an opportunity. 00:26:45.80\00:26:47.67 And it's very interesting here, 00:26:47.70\00:26:49.60 when I, when you look into the part, 00:26:49.64\00:26:52.84 they seem they crucify, it's a present active particle, 00:26:52.87\00:26:56.95 and in the notes, a willful 00:26:56.98\00:26:58.61 and continuous hostility to Christ. 00:26:58.65\00:27:01.85 So these are a different type of individuals, 00:27:01.88\00:27:04.52 they refuse, 00:27:04.55\00:27:05.99 they are doing these things in a hostile way. 00:27:06.02\00:27:10.83 And they like refuse to turn to the Lord. 00:27:10.86\00:27:14.76 And so in Hebrews 4:6, 00:27:14.80\00:27:20.34 it says, "If they fall away 00:27:20.37\00:27:21.87 and to renew them again to repentance, 00:27:21.90\00:27:23.41 since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, 00:27:23.44\00:27:26.34 and put Him to an open shame." 00:27:26.37\00:27:28.58 It's different than what we find 00:27:28.61\00:27:30.88 in Galatians 6:14, where Paul says, 00:27:30.91\00:27:34.42 "But God forbid, 00:27:34.45\00:27:35.78 that I should boast except in the cross 00:27:35.82\00:27:37.99 of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:27:38.02\00:27:39.35 by whom the world has been crucified to Me 00:27:39.39\00:27:42.12 and I to the world." 00:27:42.16\00:27:43.69 This is a different experience. 00:27:43.73\00:27:45.13 Paul says the world have been things crucified to me, 00:27:45.16\00:27:47.53 though I'm dead to the world, 00:27:47.56\00:27:48.93 I don't want any part of it. 00:27:48.96\00:27:50.33 But these individuals are basically saying, "Christ, 00:27:50.37\00:27:54.00 He doesn't mean anything to me, He's dead to me, 00:27:54.04\00:27:56.81 I'm crucifying Him, I don't have any need for Him." 00:27:56.84\00:28:00.04 Therefore, the blood of Jesus Christ 00:28:00.08\00:28:01.58 cannot cleanse these people 00:28:01.61\00:28:02.94 because they don't proceed to repentance. 00:28:02.98\00:28:06.05 And God works with them but unfortunately, 00:28:06.08\00:28:09.08 these people are not coming to that point of repentance. 00:28:09.12\00:28:12.72 Hebrews 10:26 and onward. 00:28:12.75\00:28:16.12 It says, "For if we sin willfully, 00:28:16.16\00:28:18.89 after we have received the knowledge of the truth, 00:28:18.93\00:28:22.53 there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins." 00:28:22.56\00:28:26.20 And this is the title of Tuesday's lesson. 00:28:26.23\00:28:28.47 Why is there no longer a sacrifice, 00:28:28.50\00:28:30.91 there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins? 00:28:30.94\00:28:33.38 If we sin, 00:28:33.41\00:28:34.74 this here is a Greek present particle. 00:28:34.78\00:28:36.78 If we be found sinning, that is not an isolated act, 00:28:36.81\00:28:40.72 but a state of sin. 00:28:40.75\00:28:43.22 These people are in a state of sin, 00:28:43.25\00:28:44.85 you're willfully sinning, 00:28:44.89\00:28:46.42 you're disregarding the appeals of the Holy Spirit 00:28:46.45\00:28:49.52 to your heart, and you are committed to sinning, 00:28:49.56\00:28:53.46 basically you're committed to sinning. 00:28:53.50\00:28:55.43 And there is, in Numbers Chapter 25, 00:28:55.46\00:28:57.40 and experience related concerning 00:28:57.43\00:28:59.93 the people of Israel. 00:28:59.97\00:29:01.34 And in Numbers 25:2, it says, 00:29:01.37\00:29:05.74 "And they called the people unto this, 00:29:05.77\00:29:07.71 and they called the people unto the sacrifice of their gods, 00:29:07.74\00:29:11.15 and the people did eat and bowed down to their gods, 00:29:11.18\00:29:14.28 and they joined themselves unto Baal Peor, 00:29:14.32\00:29:17.19 and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel." 00:29:17.22\00:29:20.59 So Moses comes upon the scene, 00:29:20.62\00:29:22.39 and he gathers all the people together, 00:29:22.42\00:29:24.09 all the heads and the leaders of the people together, 00:29:24.13\00:29:27.00 and he is chastising them, he's rebuking them, 00:29:27.03\00:29:30.17 and he's now telling these people have to pay 00:29:30.20\00:29:33.03 for their sins. 00:29:33.07\00:29:34.40 And while Moses is talking to them with the inspiration 00:29:34.44\00:29:37.51 of the Holy Spirit, in verse 6 of Numbers 25, 00:29:37.54\00:29:40.71 something happens that tells you 00:29:40.74\00:29:43.48 the mindset of these individuals. 00:29:43.51\00:29:45.71 "And, behold, one of the children 00:29:45.75\00:29:47.45 of Israel came and brought unto his brethren 00:29:47.48\00:29:50.15 a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, 00:29:50.19\00:29:54.56 and in the sight of all the congregation 00:29:54.59\00:29:56.32 of the children of Israel, 00:29:56.36\00:29:57.69 who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle 00:29:57.73\00:30:00.50 of the congregation. 00:30:00.53\00:30:01.86 And Phinehas, 00:30:01.90\00:30:03.23 when Phinehas the son of Eleazar 00:30:03.26\00:30:04.60 saw the son of Aaron, the priest saw it, 00:30:04.63\00:30:07.14 he rose up from among the congregation 00:30:07.17\00:30:09.04 and took a javelin in his hand. 00:30:09.07\00:30:10.57 And it says he went in into the tent 00:30:10.61\00:30:12.74 and he slew both the woman and the man. 00:30:12.77\00:30:15.31 So we see here this man was doing an open rebellion, 00:30:15.34\00:30:19.61 willfully sinning, here's Moses 00:30:19.65\00:30:21.95 chastising the people telling them, 00:30:21.98\00:30:23.89 what they are doing is against God's principles, 00:30:23.92\00:30:26.32 here comes somebody in the midst 00:30:26.35\00:30:27.79 of all the congregation 00:30:27.82\00:30:29.32 about to perform an open sin before all the people. 00:30:29.36\00:30:33.06 So now we go back to Hebrews 10:27. 00:30:33.09\00:30:36.53 This is the kind of people that this passage is talking about. 00:30:36.56\00:30:41.00 "Now, for these people, it says, 00:30:41.04\00:30:42.97 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment 00:30:43.00\00:30:46.74 and fiery indignation, 00:30:46.78\00:30:49.14 which will devour the adversaries." 00:30:49.18\00:30:52.88 So we have here a situation 00:30:52.91\00:30:55.38 where God has to take action and execute judgment. 00:30:55.42\00:30:59.52 You see, God will judge everyone fairly, 00:30:59.55\00:31:03.02 and the Bible says they will be judged according 00:31:03.06\00:31:05.56 to their works. 00:31:05.59\00:31:07.16 And these people that reject the Son of God, 00:31:07.20\00:31:11.90 and even those that once followed the Lord, 00:31:11.93\00:31:15.44 and it's a, you know, 00:31:15.47\00:31:17.11 when a member of the church falls away, 00:31:17.14\00:31:22.34 and they knew people that say, 00:31:22.38\00:31:24.45 "Oh, this is a Christian, he's going to church, 00:31:24.48\00:31:26.51 he's going to church," lives like a Christian 00:31:26.55\00:31:28.72 and eventually this person falls away, 00:31:28.75\00:31:30.99 this brings shame upon the cause of God, 00:31:31.02\00:31:33.72 because perhaps even these people move upon, 00:31:33.76\00:31:37.36 were talking to these individuals, 00:31:37.39\00:31:38.73 you should repent, you should stop doing 00:31:38.76\00:31:40.10 and now they are doing the same thing. 00:31:40.13\00:31:42.20 This brings shame upon the cause of God. 00:31:42.23\00:31:45.30 This is bad, 00:31:45.33\00:31:46.67 but when it is a leader of the church, 00:31:46.70\00:31:48.94 when it is a pastor, an elder of the church, 00:31:48.97\00:31:51.97 it seems to be a bigger sin, 00:31:52.01\00:31:54.68 a bigger shame is brought upon the cause of the Lord. 00:31:54.71\00:31:57.75 And unfortunately, this is happening today. 00:31:57.78\00:32:00.42 You see, because Satan is working hard. 00:32:00.45\00:32:03.32 He knows that his time is short. 00:32:03.35\00:32:05.42 And as I have said before, if Satan has a short time, 00:32:05.45\00:32:08.39 we also have a short time. 00:32:08.42\00:32:10.89 And so in verse 28, says, 00:32:10.93\00:32:13.50 "Anyone who has rejected Moses law 00:32:13.53\00:32:16.50 dies without mercy under testimony 00:32:16.53\00:32:19.30 of two or three witnesses." 00:32:19.33\00:32:21.10 Notice how it is written here, 00:32:21.14\00:32:22.80 "Of how much worse punishment do you suppose 00:32:22.84\00:32:26.47 will be thought worthy 00:32:26.51\00:32:28.21 who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, 00:32:28.24\00:32:31.41 counted the blood of the covenant 00:32:31.45\00:32:32.81 by which he was sanctified a common thing," 00:32:32.85\00:32:35.58 and I like the way the King James puts it, 00:32:35.62\00:32:37.39 "and unholy thing and insulted the Spirit of grace." 00:32:37.42\00:32:41.89 I want to quote, read this to you from Review 00:32:41.92\00:32:45.39 and Herald in April 25, 1893. 00:32:45.43\00:32:49.06 Notice what is written here, 00:32:49.10\00:32:50.77 "There will be no excuse for those who choose 00:32:50.80\00:32:54.47 to go in err when they might understand what is truth. 00:32:54.50\00:32:59.14 In His sufferings and death, 00:32:59.17\00:33:01.98 Jesus has made an atonement for all sins of ignorance, 00:33:02.01\00:33:06.01 but there is no provision made for willful blindness. 00:33:06.05\00:33:10.69 Those who have hid their eyes from the truth 00:33:10.72\00:33:14.46 less they should be convinced, 00:33:14.49\00:33:16.26 must exercise repentance toward God 00:33:16.29\00:33:18.93 for the transgression of His law, 00:33:18.96\00:33:21.10 and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:33:21.13\00:33:23.37 that there are sins of ignorance, 00:33:23.40\00:33:25.73 and in the transgression of God's Commandments, 00:33:25.77\00:33:28.17 including the Sabbath, may be forgiven." 00:33:28.20\00:33:30.84 So there is no more sacrifice for sins for these people. 00:33:30.87\00:33:35.14 Now the lesson brings something interesting here 00:33:35.18\00:33:37.98 about the expression trample the Son of God under foot. 00:33:38.01\00:33:42.35 It this describes the rejection of Jesus rule, 00:33:42.38\00:33:45.29 the title Son of God reminded the audience 00:33:45.32\00:33:47.79 that God has installed Jesus at His right hand 00:33:47.82\00:33:51.09 and promised to make His enemies a footstool. 00:33:51.13\00:33:54.23 The trampling of Jesus underfoot implies 00:33:54.26\00:33:56.83 that the apostate has treated Jesus as an enemy. 00:33:56.87\00:34:01.07 In the context of the argument of the epistle in Hebrews 1:13, 00:34:01.10\00:34:05.24 it could be implied that as far as the life of the apostate, 00:34:05.27\00:34:08.98 the person that walked away is concerned, 00:34:09.01\00:34:10.58 Jesus has been taken off the throne, 00:34:10.61\00:34:13.31 which is now occupied by the apostate himself, 00:34:13.35\00:34:17.92 and has set him as the footstool instead. 00:34:17.95\00:34:22.46 This is what Lucifer wanted to do in heaven. 00:34:22.49\00:34:25.49 And in essence, 00:34:25.53\00:34:26.86 some of the things described here in Hebrews Chapter 6, 00:34:26.90\00:34:29.93 and Hebrews Chapter 10, 00:34:29.96\00:34:31.87 identifies a little bit with what the angels 00:34:31.90\00:34:35.04 that fell away did. 00:34:35.07\00:34:36.77 They tasted of the heavenly things, 00:34:36.81\00:34:39.01 they were there in the presence of God, 00:34:39.04\00:34:41.18 they knew all the heavenly blessings, 00:34:41.21\00:34:43.98 but these angels chose to go with rebellion, 00:34:44.01\00:34:48.78 they chose to go on the side of Lucifer 00:34:48.82\00:34:51.79 that became Satan, 00:34:51.82\00:34:53.46 and then did open rebellion against God. 00:34:53.49\00:34:56.62 This is a similar case, the way I look at it. 00:34:56.66\00:34:59.69 And so I encourage you 00:34:59.73\00:35:01.93 that if you're seeing yourself drifting away, 00:35:01.96\00:35:04.80 come back to Jesus while the door of mercy 00:35:04.83\00:35:07.47 is still open. 00:35:07.50\00:35:08.84 Amen and amen. Thank you. 00:35:08.87\00:35:11.14 I'm going to just read it briefly again, 00:35:11.17\00:35:12.91 even though I'm not going to cover 4 through 6. 00:35:12.94\00:35:15.54 But actually, the warning goes from Hebrews 6:4-8, 00:35:15.58\00:35:20.85 I wanted to add that. 00:35:20.88\00:35:22.22 So here's what it says, it is impossible, 00:35:22.25\00:35:24.95 this is Hebrews 6:4, 00:35:24.99\00:35:28.09 "It is impossible 00:35:28.12\00:35:29.46 for those who are once enlightened 00:35:29.49\00:35:30.83 and have tasted the heavenly gift to have become partakers 00:35:30.86\00:35:34.73 of the Holy Spirit." 00:35:34.76\00:35:36.60 So that means you have to quench the spirit, right, 00:35:36.63\00:35:39.03 if you're going to do this. 00:35:39.07\00:35:40.40 "And it tasted the good word of God 00:35:40.44\00:35:43.87 and the powers of the age to come, 00:35:43.91\00:35:46.17 if they fall away, if they're apostatizing, 00:35:46.21\00:35:49.34 to renew them again to repentance, 00:35:49.38\00:35:51.95 since they crucify again for themselves, 00:35:51.98\00:35:54.38 the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame." 00:35:54.42\00:35:57.52 Now listen to verses 7 and 8, 00:35:57.55\00:36:00.26 "For the earth which drinks in the ring 00:36:00.29\00:36:03.89 that often comes upon it, 00:36:03.93\00:36:06.49 and bears herbs useful for those 00:36:06.53\00:36:10.40 by whom it is cultivated, 00:36:10.43\00:36:13.67 receives a blessing from God. 00:36:13.70\00:36:18.17 But, if it bears thorns, 00:36:18.21\00:36:21.58 and briars, it is rejected, 00:36:21.61\00:36:24.88 and near to being cursed, 00:36:24.91\00:36:27.78 whose and is to be burned." 00:36:27.82\00:36:32.29 We don't want that in, do we? 00:36:32.32\00:36:35.12 So this is a very strong, 00:36:35.16\00:36:39.13 it's a sincere warning that He's referring to the people 00:36:39.16\00:36:43.47 of the wilderness generation, 00:36:43.50\00:36:45.27 actually, who were, they had, 00:36:45.30\00:36:49.44 they were a negative example, the people who, 00:36:49.47\00:36:53.14 through the absence of their faith, 00:36:53.17\00:36:55.34 the absence of belief, they could not inherit 00:36:55.38\00:36:59.38 the promises of God. 00:36:59.41\00:37:01.85 So it's interesting though, 00:37:01.88\00:37:04.29 is He's referring back to these people 00:37:04.32\00:37:07.52 who saw God move, they tasted of His goodness, 00:37:07.56\00:37:11.29 they saw His miracles, and yet, they never responded to God, 00:37:11.33\00:37:16.23 they just wouldn't believe Him. 00:37:16.26\00:37:18.67 So, but the writer of Hebrews goes on 00:37:18.70\00:37:22.64 and he's speaking of better things 00:37:22.67\00:37:26.68 concerning his audience. 00:37:26.71\00:37:29.01 So he's not putting them in that category. 00:37:29.04\00:37:32.61 He's referring back to those people. 00:37:32.65\00:37:34.95 So let's look at Hebrews 6:9. 00:37:34.98\00:37:39.45 And here's what he says, "But, beloved, 00:37:39.49\00:37:43.02 we are confident of better things 00:37:43.06\00:37:47.16 concerning you." 00:37:47.20\00:37:48.53 You're not going to be like that faithless generation. 00:37:48.56\00:37:51.90 "Yes, things that accompany salvation," 00:37:51.93\00:37:55.07 this will be all the promises of God, 00:37:55.10\00:37:57.94 "though we speak in this manner. 00:37:57.97\00:38:00.71 For God is not unjust, 00:38:00.74\00:38:03.98 to forget your work and your labor of love, 00:38:04.01\00:38:07.25 which you have shown toward His name, 00:38:07.28\00:38:11.49 in that you have ministered to the saints 00:38:11.52\00:38:16.79 and you do minister." 00:38:16.83\00:38:20.40 So essentially, he's saying, 00:38:20.43\00:38:23.47 I'm confident, beloved audience, 00:38:23.50\00:38:25.80 you haven't fallen away. 00:38:25.83\00:38:28.30 And I'm confident because you continue to minister, 00:38:28.34\00:38:32.34 you're not going to fall away in the future. 00:38:32.37\00:38:34.84 See, he believes, from what he's written here, 00:38:34.88\00:38:39.51 that they're going to receive that warning that he just gave. 00:38:39.55\00:38:42.98 He's got a confidence that they'll continue 00:38:43.02\00:38:47.69 to produce the appropriate fruits. 00:38:47.72\00:38:51.03 I loved what the study guide said, 00:38:51.06\00:38:53.83 it says, they are like the earth, 00:38:53.86\00:38:56.87 he's speaking of the audience of Hebrews, 00:38:56.90\00:38:59.87 they are like the earth which is cultivated by God, 00:38:59.90\00:39:03.67 and produces the fruit. 00:39:03.71\00:39:05.61 He expects these people will receive 00:39:05.64\00:39:09.78 the blessing from God, which is salvation. 00:39:09.81\00:39:15.18 So the believers 00:39:15.22\00:39:18.05 that were receiving this letter of Hebrews. 00:39:18.09\00:39:20.62 What I liked about it, 00:39:20.66\00:39:22.59 is that we see they are continuing 00:39:22.62\00:39:26.66 to minister to the saints. 00:39:26.70\00:39:29.13 It was a sustained service, 00:39:29.16\00:39:33.34 it was not isolated actions. 00:39:33.37\00:39:37.31 You know, in Romans 13:10, 00:39:37.34\00:39:41.38 Paul makes this simple statement, 00:39:41.41\00:39:43.95 love is the fulfillment of God's law. 00:39:43.98\00:39:48.65 And what these people were doing and let me tell you, 00:39:48.68\00:39:52.59 if someone loves or expresses love, 00:39:52.62\00:39:57.19 only in words, that's fake love, 00:39:57.23\00:40:00.60 because love is demonstrated by actions. 00:40:00.63\00:40:04.90 What 1 John 3:18 says is, 00:40:04.93\00:40:08.97 "Let us not love in word, 00:40:09.00\00:40:13.38 or in tongue, but in deed, and in truth." 00:40:13.41\00:40:17.58 It's easy to say to someone, 00:40:17.61\00:40:21.48 "Oh, if you need my help, call me." 00:40:21.52\00:40:23.82 But if you say to that person, 00:40:23.85\00:40:27.06 "What can I do to help you today?" 00:40:27.09\00:40:29.66 It shows you're ready to spring into action. 00:40:29.69\00:40:32.63 It's not just some kind of a pat on the back 00:40:32.66\00:40:37.63 to make them feel better or make you feel better. 00:40:37.67\00:40:40.50 Love is not 00:40:40.54\00:40:43.24 an intellectual exercise. 00:40:43.27\00:40:46.64 You know, when the Bible says God is love, 00:40:46.68\00:40:49.18 He is a God of action. 00:40:49.21\00:40:51.71 Our study guide, here's another 00:40:51.75\00:40:53.88 great quote from the study guide. 00:40:53.92\00:40:56.32 Exceptional acts do not reveal 00:40:56.35\00:41:00.22 the true character of a person. 00:41:00.26\00:41:02.96 Ain't that interesting? 00:41:02.99\00:41:04.76 The weightiest evidence of love toward God is not 00:41:04.79\00:41:09.96 "religious acts per se," 00:41:10.00\00:41:13.03 but acts of love toward fellow human beings, 00:41:13.07\00:41:17.21 especially those who are disadvantaged. 00:41:17.24\00:41:20.74 You remember, Jesus said, 00:41:20.78\00:41:22.24 "If you've done this to the least of one of these, 00:41:22.28\00:41:26.41 you've done it to Me." 00:41:26.45\00:41:28.48 And Paul exhorts his believers not to forget to do good. 00:41:28.52\00:41:33.66 Let's look at Hebrews 6:11-12. 00:41:33.69\00:41:37.43 He says, "And we desire that each one of you 00:41:37.46\00:41:40.63 show the same diligence to the full assurance 00:41:40.66\00:41:43.63 of hope until the end, 00:41:43.67\00:41:45.30 that you do not become sluggish, 00:41:45.33\00:41:47.97 don't become dull of hearing, as you were saying, 00:41:48.00\00:41:51.34 don't become apathetic and in danger of falling away." 00:41:51.37\00:41:56.08 But then he says, 00:41:56.11\00:41:57.45 "Imitate those who through faith 00:41:57.48\00:42:01.52 and patience inherit the promises." 00:42:01.55\00:42:06.96 How do we inherit the promises? 00:42:06.99\00:42:09.62 Through faith, trust in God, and through patience, 00:42:09.66\00:42:13.76 waiting for God's timing. 00:42:13.80\00:42:16.30 Hebrews 5:8-11, or 8 and 9, at least, 00:42:16.33\00:42:21.34 is talking about Jesus. 00:42:21.37\00:42:24.74 God, who became the person of Jesus Christ 00:42:24.77\00:42:28.58 became the covenant Son of God, 00:42:28.61\00:42:31.28 who learned obedience 00:42:31.31\00:42:33.75 and was perfected in that learning. 00:42:33.78\00:42:37.05 And we already have discussed this. 00:42:37.09\00:42:40.42 Jesus didn't have any propensity to disobey. 00:42:40.46\00:42:45.36 He was God, He never had to obey anybody before. 00:42:45.39\00:42:49.73 But this is something that we all need to remember 00:42:49.76\00:42:54.00 is that we've got to be imitators of Jesus, 00:42:54.04\00:42:57.47 we need to learn to obey, 00:42:57.51\00:42:59.51 we need to be imitators of the people of faith, 00:42:59.54\00:43:04.25 who through their patience and faith, 00:43:04.28\00:43:07.42 they inherited the promises. 00:43:07.45\00:43:10.19 And you know, the writer of Hebrews 00:43:10.22\00:43:12.45 presents Abraham as an example we should follow. 00:43:12.49\00:43:16.76 Let's look at Hebrews 00:43:16.79\00:43:18.39 6:13-15. 00:43:18.43\00:43:22.93 And he writes, 00:43:22.96\00:43:24.53 "For when God made a promise to Abraham, 00:43:24.57\00:43:27.00 because he could swear by no one greater 00:43:27.04\00:43:29.37 he swore by himself." 00:43:29.40\00:43:31.17 This is God saying, "Surely, blessing I will bless you, 00:43:31.21\00:43:36.18 and multiplying, I will multiply you." 00:43:36.21\00:43:40.42 And so after he, after Abraham, 00:43:40.45\00:43:45.22 had patiently endured, 00:43:45.25\00:43:49.29 except for a little season of impatience, 00:43:49.32\00:43:52.99 he obtained the promise. 00:43:53.03\00:43:56.40 Hebrews 11 gives us a list of positive examples. 00:43:56.43\00:44:01.10 And then Hebrews 12 says this, 00:44:01.14\00:44:05.91 therefore, Hebrews 12:1, 00:44:05.94\00:44:09.24 "Therefore, we also, since we are surrounded 00:44:09.28\00:44:12.61 by such a great cloud of witnesses," 00:44:12.65\00:44:14.88 he's talking about all the saints in Hebrews 11, 00:44:14.92\00:44:18.72 the hallmark of faith. 00:44:18.75\00:44:22.69 He said, "Let us lay aside every weight, 00:44:22.72\00:44:24.99 and the sin which so easily ensnares us, 00:44:25.03\00:44:27.86 let us run with endurance the race that is before us, 00:44:27.90\00:44:31.27 looking unto Jesus, 00:44:31.30\00:44:33.37 the author and finisher of our faith, 00:44:33.40\00:44:35.40 who for the joy that was set before Him 00:44:35.44\00:44:37.77 endured the cross, despising the shame, 00:44:37.81\00:44:40.24 and has sat down at the right hand 00:44:40.28\00:44:42.01 of the throne of God. 00:44:42.04\00:44:43.91 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners, 00:44:43.95\00:44:49.75 and against Himself." 00:44:49.78\00:44:52.25 And he says, "Consider Him, 00:44:52.29\00:44:54.82 lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls." 00:44:54.86\00:44:59.93 Here is the patience of the saints. 00:44:59.96\00:45:02.60 That's what Revelation 14:12 says, 00:45:02.63\00:45:06.33 "Here are those who keep the commandments 00:45:06.37\00:45:09.80 and the faith of Jesus." 00:45:09.84\00:45:11.17 Amen. Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:45:11.21\00:45:13.91 This chapter has been made much clearer 00:45:13.94\00:45:16.68 after today's lesson. 00:45:16.71\00:45:18.51 Praise God. I'm Ryan Day and I have Thursday's lesson. 00:45:18.55\00:45:21.58 And the title of this lesson happens to be the title 00:45:21.62\00:45:24.49 of the overall lesson, which is Jesus, 00:45:24.52\00:45:27.06 the Anchor of the Soul. 00:45:27.09\00:45:29.02 And, of course, Paul culminates his warning against apostasy 00:45:29.06\00:45:32.73 and encouragement towards love and faith with a beautiful, 00:45:32.76\00:45:36.06 soaring exposition of assurance in Christ 00:45:36.10\00:45:39.43 when we get to Hebrews 6:17-20. 00:45:39.47\00:45:43.34 So if we go there now, we'll read through 00:45:43.37\00:45:45.07 to the latter part of this or to the end 00:45:45.11\00:45:47.04 of this chapter here. 00:45:47.08\00:45:48.41 Hebrews 6:17-20. 00:45:48.44\00:45:51.28 Notice what the Bible says, 00:45:51.31\00:45:53.55 "Thus God determining to show more abundantly 00:45:53.58\00:45:56.79 to the heirs of promise, 00:45:56.82\00:45:58.82 the immutability of His council, 00:45:58.85\00:46:01.76 confirmed it by an oath, 00:46:01.79\00:46:05.39 that by two immutable things, 00:46:05.43\00:46:07.53 in which it is impossible for God to lie, 00:46:07.56\00:46:11.27 we might have strong consolation, 00:46:11.30\00:46:13.54 who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. 00:46:13.57\00:46:19.11 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, 00:46:19.14\00:46:22.84 both sure and steadfast, 00:46:22.88\00:46:25.48 and which enters the presence behind the veil. 00:46:25.51\00:46:28.92 Wherefore, I love this, 00:46:28.95\00:46:30.45 where the forerunner has entered for us, 00:46:30.49\00:46:34.52 even Jesus, having become the High Priest forever, 00:46:34.56\00:46:38.59 according to the order of Melchizedek." 00:46:38.63\00:46:41.96 God guaranteed His promises for us in several ways. 00:46:42.00\00:46:46.90 We see that all the way through scripture, 00:46:46.94\00:46:48.64 but especially here in this particular chapter 00:46:48.67\00:46:50.51 in Hebrews. 00:46:50.54\00:46:51.87 We see first that God guaranteed His promise 00:46:51.91\00:46:53.91 with an oath that's mentioned there in Hebrews 6:17. 00:46:53.94\00:46:58.75 According to Scripture, of course, 00:46:58.78\00:47:00.35 God's oaths to Abraham, 00:47:00.38\00:47:02.42 and to David became the ultimate basis 00:47:02.45\00:47:05.35 of confidence in God's permanent favor for Israel. 00:47:05.39\00:47:08.36 We see this all the way through Scripture. 00:47:08.39\00:47:10.39 And we're referencing this because again, 00:47:10.43\00:47:12.06 a lot of people look back at that Old Testament, 00:47:12.09\00:47:13.83 they see a division between Old Testament 00:47:13.86\00:47:16.03 and New Testament, 00:47:16.06\00:47:17.40 when you start talking about the covenants, 00:47:17.43\00:47:18.83 the oaths, the promises that God made to Abraham, 00:47:18.87\00:47:21.44 to Isaac, to Jacob, all the way to David, 00:47:21.47\00:47:24.01 and of course, you know, people look at them 00:47:24.04\00:47:25.37 and say, that's Old Testament, 00:47:25.41\00:47:26.74 it's not important, we don't need it anymore. 00:47:26.78\00:47:28.81 But yet we see that even all the way forward 00:47:28.84\00:47:31.11 to the Book of Hebrews, those oaths are mentioned, 00:47:31.15\00:47:33.62 those promises are mentioned. 00:47:33.65\00:47:35.08 In this case, the writer of this lesson brings out 00:47:35.12\00:47:38.95 that the oath by Abraham and David are great examples 00:47:38.99\00:47:42.69 of these promises of God. 00:47:42.72\00:47:44.83 For instance, if you go all the way back to the story 00:47:44.86\00:47:46.49 there in Exodus Chapter 32, we even see Moses, 00:47:46.53\00:47:49.43 of course, Moses, reaffirming, and reminding God 00:47:49.46\00:47:53.00 of the special promise, the covenant, the oath 00:47:53.03\00:47:55.50 that He had made with Abraham, with Isaac, and Jacob. 00:47:55.54\00:47:58.17 Let's go to Exodus 32, 00:47:58.21\00:47:59.54 and read verses 11 through 14 there, 00:47:59.57\00:48:01.61 powerful what we see here. 00:48:01.64\00:48:02.98 So the children of Israel, 00:48:03.01\00:48:04.35 just to set the foundation for what's happening, 00:48:04.38\00:48:06.55 the children of Israel just been caught dancing naked 00:48:06.58\00:48:08.65 around this golden calf. 00:48:08.68\00:48:10.05 And God says, "Look, you need to get down off this mountain 00:48:10.09\00:48:12.05 and go down there and handle these people." 00:48:12.09\00:48:13.66 And God becomes furious says, 00:48:13.69\00:48:15.02 "I'm going to destroy these stiff neck people." 00:48:15.06\00:48:17.16 And then notice what Moses response was. 00:48:17.19\00:48:19.23 Exodus 32:11-14, it says, 00:48:19.26\00:48:22.06 "Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, 00:48:22.10\00:48:24.27 and said, 'Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against 00:48:24.30\00:48:26.74 Your people whom You have brought out of the land 00:48:26.77\00:48:29.67 of Egypt, with great power, and with a mighty hand? 00:48:29.70\00:48:33.58 Why should the Egyptian speak and say, 00:48:33.61\00:48:36.14 He brought them out to harm them, 00:48:36.18\00:48:38.05 to kill them in the mountain and to consume them 00:48:38.08\00:48:40.62 from the face of the earth? 00:48:40.65\00:48:42.92 He says, 00:48:42.95\00:48:44.59 turn from your fierce wrath 00:48:44.62\00:48:49.29 and relent from this harm to your people.'" 00:48:49.32\00:48:52.39 Remember, here it is verse 13, "Remember Abraham, 00:48:52.43\00:48:55.10 Isaac and Israel, your servants, 00:48:55.13\00:48:56.93 to whom You swore by Your Own Self, 00:48:56.97\00:48:59.70 and said to them, 00:48:59.73\00:49:01.07 'I will multiply your descendants 00:49:01.10\00:49:02.44 as the stars of heaven, 00:49:02.47\00:49:03.81 and all this land that I have spoken of, 00:49:03.84\00:49:06.11 I give your descendants 00:49:06.14\00:49:07.48 and they shall inherit it forever.'" 00:49:07.51\00:49:09.24 So the Lord relented from His harm. 00:49:09.28\00:49:11.88 And He said He would do to His people, 00:49:11.91\00:49:14.22 and what He had said He would do to His people. 00:49:14.25\00:49:15.65 So in this case, Moses is reminding God, 00:49:15.68\00:49:18.25 he's saying, "Lord, what about Your promise? 00:49:18.29\00:49:19.65 What about your oath?" 00:49:19.69\00:49:21.02 Again, what did Hebrews 6:17-20 say earlier? 00:49:21.06\00:49:25.39 God cannot lie. 00:49:25.43\00:49:26.93 God honors His word, my friends, 00:49:26.96\00:49:28.73 that's one of the things we can absolutely stake 00:49:28.76\00:49:31.13 our faith on is the fact that God honors His word. 00:49:31.17\00:49:34.20 He keeps His oath, He keeps His covenant, 00:49:34.24\00:49:36.50 He keeps His promises. 00:49:36.54\00:49:37.91 Even Romans 11:28-29, alludes to this. 00:49:37.94\00:49:41.74 It says, "Concerning the gospel, 00:49:41.78\00:49:44.28 they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election, 00:49:44.31\00:49:47.18 they're beloved for the sake of the fathers." 00:49:47.22\00:49:49.28 And then verse 29, it says, 00:49:49.32\00:49:50.82 "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." 00:49:50.85\00:49:55.52 Why? Because God's Word stands forever, God does not change. 00:49:55.56\00:49:59.69 And so similarly with the Psalmist now, 00:49:59.73\00:50:02.23 we see that the Psalmist even intercedes before God 00:50:02.26\00:50:05.20 and for Israel, he claims, 00:50:05.23\00:50:07.94 he basically claims God's oath to David, okay? 00:50:07.97\00:50:11.07 So reminding God of His oath to David. 00:50:11.11\00:50:13.41 And we see that in Psalm 89:34, 00:50:13.44\00:50:16.81 and all the way through to verse 37. 00:50:16.85\00:50:19.08 So this is Psalm 89:34-37. 00:50:19.11\00:50:21.65 Again, it says, "My covenant I will not break, 00:50:21.68\00:50:23.85 nor also the words that are going out of My lips. 00:50:23.89\00:50:26.62 Once I have sworn by My holiness, 00:50:26.65\00:50:29.32 I will not lie to David. 00:50:29.36\00:50:31.86 His seed shall endure forever. 00:50:31.89\00:50:33.63 And his throne is as the sun before me, 00:50:33.66\00:50:35.93 it shall be established forever, 00:50:35.96\00:50:37.57 like the moon, 00:50:37.60\00:50:38.93 even like the faithful witness in the sky." 00:50:38.97\00:50:42.00 Selah. 00:50:42.04\00:50:43.37 And so in this case, again, we're reminded that according 00:50:43.41\00:50:46.17 to the New Testament, speaking of these oaths, 00:50:46.21\00:50:48.64 these promises, according to the New Testament, 00:50:48.68\00:50:50.85 both of these oaths to Abraham, 00:50:50.88\00:50:53.58 and to David that we see carry over all the way 00:50:53.62\00:50:55.65 to the New Testament, 00:50:55.68\00:50:57.02 both oaths were fulfilled in Jesus, 00:50:57.05\00:50:59.65 the seed of Abraham, 00:50:59.69\00:51:01.02 who ascended and was seated on the throne of day. 00:51:01.06\00:51:03.32 We read this in Galatians 3:13-16, 00:51:03.36\00:51:07.26 as well as Luke Chapter 1. 00:51:07.30\00:51:08.63 Let's go to Galatians 3 and read that there. 00:51:08.66\00:51:10.37 Galatians 3:13-16. 00:51:10.40\00:51:14.30 Notice what the Bible says. 00:51:14.34\00:51:16.47 It says, "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, 00:51:16.50\00:51:20.41 having become a curse for us, for it is written, 00:51:20.44\00:51:23.21 cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree 00:51:23.24\00:51:26.82 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles 00:51:26.85\00:51:30.22 in Christ Jesus, 00:51:30.25\00:51:32.05 that we might receive the promise 00:51:32.09\00:51:33.82 of the Spirit through faith." 00:51:33.86\00:51:36.32 "Brethren," he says in verse 15, 00:51:36.36\00:51:38.26 "I speak in the manner of men, 00:51:38.29\00:51:40.26 though it is only a man's covenant, 00:51:40.30\00:51:42.56 yet it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it." 00:51:42.60\00:51:47.27 Verse 16, "Now to Abraham and his Seed," 00:51:47.30\00:51:51.17 and Seed is capitalized there I like that, 00:51:51.21\00:51:53.68 "were the promises made. 00:51:53.71\00:51:55.78 He does not say, 'And to seeds, 'as of many, 00:51:55.81\00:52:00.02 but as of one, 'And to your Seed,' 00:52:00.05\00:52:03.65 who is Christ.'" 00:52:03.69\00:52:05.32 So who is the fulfillment of that oath? 00:52:05.35\00:52:07.52 Who is the fulfillment of that covenant 00:52:07.56\00:52:09.32 that God gave to Abraham? 00:52:09.36\00:52:10.69 It's none other than Jesus Christ Himself. 00:52:10.73\00:52:12.56 We even find to the covenant that God had promised in David 00:52:12.59\00:52:15.73 or through to David on to the sea 00:52:15.76\00:52:17.77 that would come after him. 00:52:17.80\00:52:19.13 We see in Luke 1:31-34, as well as verses 54 and 55. 00:52:19.17\00:52:24.34 We see this also Christ is the fulfillment of that. 00:52:24.37\00:52:26.94 Notice what the Bible says, it says, "And behold, 00:52:26.98\00:52:28.94 you will conceive in your room and bring forth a son," 00:52:28.98\00:52:31.88 this is God speaking to Mary, or the angel speaking to Mary, 00:52:31.91\00:52:35.38 "and shall call His name Jesus, 00:52:35.42\00:52:38.59 He will be great 00:52:38.62\00:52:39.95 and will be called the Son of the Highest, 00:52:39.99\00:52:41.59 and the Lord God will give Him the throne of his father, 00:52:41.62\00:52:45.59 David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever 00:52:45.63\00:52:49.16 and His kingdom there will be no end. 00:52:49.20\00:52:52.27 He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance 00:52:52.30\00:52:55.00 of his mercy, and he spoke to our fathers to Abraham 00:52:55.04\00:52:58.47 and to his Seed forever," my friend. 00:52:58.51\00:53:01.98 So the number, one of the ways that Christ 00:53:02.01\00:53:04.41 is confirmed to us as the anchor of the soul 00:53:04.45\00:53:07.62 is through these oaths, through these promises, 00:53:07.65\00:53:10.19 His covenant, His Word does not fail 00:53:10.22\00:53:12.35 because God does not fail, love does not fail. 00:53:12.39\00:53:16.42 The second point that we make here Christ is anchor to us. 00:53:16.46\00:53:19.73 He is the anchor of the soul, 00:53:19.76\00:53:21.10 because He is forerunner 00:53:21.13\00:53:24.90 seated at the right hand of God in heaven. 00:53:24.93\00:53:28.34 The lesson brings us out, this is second, 00:53:28.37\00:53:30.11 God has guaranteed His promises to us 00:53:30.14\00:53:32.41 by the act of seating Jesus at His right hand. 00:53:32.44\00:53:35.84 Jesus' ascension has the purpose 00:53:35.88\00:53:37.55 of corroborating the promise made to the believers 00:53:37.58\00:53:40.32 because Jesus ascended as a forerunner on our behalf. 00:53:40.35\00:53:45.35 Of course, that's seen in Hebrews 6:20. 00:53:45.39\00:53:48.06 "Thus the ascension reveals to us the certainty 00:53:48.09\00:53:51.06 of God's salvation for us. 00:53:51.09\00:53:53.26 God led Jesus to glory through the suffering 00:53:53.29\00:53:55.90 of death for everyone, 00:53:55.93\00:53:57.77 so that He might bring many children to glory." 00:53:57.80\00:54:01.70 We'll read that there in Hebrews 2:9-10. 00:54:01.74\00:54:04.94 When it goes on to say, for it, in verse 10, 00:54:04.97\00:54:06.91 "For it is fitting for Him, and for whom all things 00:54:06.94\00:54:10.15 and by whom are all things in bringing many sons to glory, 00:54:10.18\00:54:14.32 to make the captain of their salvation 00:54:14.35\00:54:15.92 perfect through sufferings." 00:54:15.95\00:54:18.75 But, of course, the scripture, this lesson goes on to say, 00:54:18.79\00:54:21.16 Jesus presence before the Father 00:54:21.19\00:54:23.76 is the anchor of the soul 00:54:23.79\00:54:26.80 that has been fastened to the throne of God. 00:54:26.83\00:54:30.10 I like that, that has been fastened. 00:54:30.13\00:54:32.07 Jesus got a seatbelt. He's right there. 00:54:32.10\00:54:34.54 He's fastened, He's held tight in the Father's presence. 00:54:34.57\00:54:38.37 It goes on to say, "The honor of God's rule 00:54:38.41\00:54:40.98 has been waged on the fulfillment 00:54:41.01\00:54:42.88 of His promise to us through Jesus." 00:54:42.91\00:54:45.75 And I have to end with this question here. 00:54:45.78\00:54:47.35 It's beautiful. What more assurance do we need? 00:54:47.38\00:54:52.15 If we can't believe in the Word of God, 00:54:52.19\00:54:55.16 if we can't trust in God's promises, 00:54:55.19\00:54:57.43 if we can't trust in His covenant, 00:54:57.46\00:54:59.06 in His oath, and we cannot trust in the fact 00:54:59.09\00:55:01.56 that God's Word promises us that Jesus has now ascended 00:55:01.60\00:55:04.80 to be seated on the throne with the Father beside Him 00:55:04.83\00:55:08.20 as our forerunner, as the anchor of our soul, 00:55:08.24\00:55:11.37 we look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. 00:55:11.41\00:55:14.78 My friends, I just appeal to you now, 00:55:14.81\00:55:16.68 look to Jesus. 00:55:16.71\00:55:18.05 As you've learned today, we see that no one, 00:55:18.08\00:55:21.02 if you're still in love with Jesus, 00:55:21.05\00:55:22.52 if you're still, no matter how many struggles, 00:55:22.55\00:55:24.05 no matter how many challenges, 00:55:24.09\00:55:25.52 if you're still struggling, 00:55:25.55\00:55:27.02 that does not necessarily mean it's the end. 00:55:27.06\00:55:29.36 Just simply look to Jesus as the author 00:55:29.39\00:55:31.59 and finisher of your faith. 00:55:31.63\00:55:32.96 Amen. What a powerful study. 00:55:32.99\00:55:35.16 I can't believe this is all the parentheses. 00:55:35.20\00:55:37.53 Praise the Lord, what an amazing study. 00:55:37.57\00:55:40.14 Thank you, Pastor Ryan, Shelley, 00:55:40.17\00:55:42.00 Pastor Johnny and Pastor James. 00:55:42.04\00:55:43.44 I want to give each one of you a moment 00:55:43.47\00:55:44.81 to share a closing thought. 00:55:44.84\00:55:46.17 Amen. 00:55:46.21\00:55:47.71 Hebrews, Chapter 6, not Chapter 4, but Chapter 6, 00:55:47.74\00:55:50.85 love this thought, you know, there is hope for all of us, 00:55:50.88\00:55:54.88 as long as we don't turn away from Jesus Christ 00:55:54.92\00:55:57.19 and all that He means to us. 00:55:57.22\00:55:59.45 I like to turn to Isaiah 55:6-7, 00:55:59.49\00:56:01.92 "Seek ye the Lord, while He may be found, 00:56:01.96\00:56:04.66 call ye upon Him while He is near, 00:56:04.69\00:56:07.10 let the wicked forsake his way, 00:56:07.13\00:56:08.86 and the unrighteous man his thoughts, 00:56:08.90\00:56:10.80 and let him return unto the Lord 00:56:10.83\00:56:12.27 and He will have mercy upon him and to our God, 00:56:12.30\00:56:14.74 for He will abundantly pardon." 00:56:14.77\00:56:16.87 Amen. 00:56:16.91\00:56:18.24 My day was better things and one of the better things, 00:56:18.27\00:56:20.98 one of my favorite promises is Hebrews 13:5 where God says, 00:56:21.01\00:56:24.28 "I will never leave you or forsake you." 00:56:24.31\00:56:26.35 I claim that all the time, but I want to balance that 00:56:26.38\00:56:29.98 because I teach a lot, but I want to read something, 00:56:30.02\00:56:32.29 2 Chronicles 15:2, 00:56:32.32\00:56:34.86 "The Lord is with you while you are with Him. 00:56:34.89\00:56:38.16 If you seek Him, He will be found by you. 00:56:38.19\00:56:42.36 But if you forsake Him, He will forsake you." 00:56:42.40\00:56:45.83 Amen. 00:56:45.87\00:56:47.20 Just like the old hymn says, what can wash away my sins? 00:56:47.24\00:56:52.11 Nothing but the blood of Jesus. 00:56:52.14\00:56:54.04 What can make me whole again? 00:56:54.08\00:56:56.85 Nothing but the blood of Jesus. 00:56:56.88\00:56:58.31 Oh, precious is the flow 00:56:58.35\00:57:02.48 that makes me white as snow. 00:57:02.52\00:57:06.02 No other fount I know, 00:57:06.05\00:57:09.76 nothing but the blood of Jesus. 00:57:09.79\00:57:14.43 Amen. 00:57:14.46\00:57:15.96 I love it when you sing, Ryan, 00:57:16.00\00:57:17.47 he could sing more on set, don't you think? 00:57:17.50\00:57:19.00 I love that. Thank you. 00:57:19.03\00:57:20.67 Jesus, the Anchor for the Soul. 00:57:20.70\00:57:22.67 What an incredible encouragement. 00:57:22.70\00:57:24.27 The lesson started with a serious tone. 00:57:24.31\00:57:26.78 It's a serious warning, and I think as Christians, 00:57:26.81\00:57:30.25 no matter what denomination you are, 00:57:30.28\00:57:32.55 we need to examine our own hearts. 00:57:32.58\00:57:34.42 We need to go to God and we need to make sure 00:57:34.45\00:57:36.65 that we listen and that we walk in obedience. 00:57:36.69\00:57:39.52 But yet there is hope, there is forgiveness in Jesus. 00:57:39.55\00:57:43.63 Jesus is the anchor for the soul, 00:57:43.66\00:57:46.59 both sure and steadfast. 00:57:46.63\00:57:48.20 Do you need an anchor today? 00:57:48.23\00:57:49.60 Do you need something to keep you 00:57:49.63\00:57:51.27 in the storm tossed winds of life? 00:57:51.30\00:57:53.90 Reach out to Jesus. 00:57:53.94\00:57:55.70 He will hold on to you throughout life 00:57:55.74\00:57:59.21 and bring you to eternity. 00:57:59.24\00:58:01.24 Join us next week, lesson number eight, 00:58:01.28\00:58:03.65 Jesus, the Mediator of the New Covenant. 00:58:03.68\00:58:06.11
