Our feelings become
our words and our words,

starts back in the mind.

So I want to look at this
passage with that in mind.

and have tasted
the heavenly gift."

We're going to go back and
explore all of these verbs.

Enlightened is the first,

tasted the
heavenly gift is the second,

become partakers
of the Holy Spirit,

and the powers

So let's take a look at this.

The believers were
converted, were they not?

They were once enlightened,
what does that mean?

his defense.

This is God speaking to him,

"I will deliver you
from the Jewish people

as well as from the
Gentiles to whom I now send you

to open their eyes in
order to turn them from darkness

the power of Satan

that they may
receive forgiveness of sins

and then inheritance

talking about the commission

the Lord Jesus Christ.

But what was part of that?

God's delivered us
from the power of darkness

So, these people
were once enlightened,

what does that mean?

They knew God.

They were enlightened.

They understood
they had been transformed

out of darkness,

into the kingdom
of God's dear Son.

They were walking in the
light of the glory of God.

But it doesn't stop there.

They tasted the heavenly gift.

You know, Psalm 34:8,

is a pivotal verse
in my own experience,

because of this verse,

I made a choice to follow Jesus.

Psalm 34:8, just says,

"Taste and see
that the Lord is good.

Blessed is the man or
woman who trust in Him."

And because of that
verse in my own life,

I said, "Okay, God,
I'm going to try You."

And I actually
gave Him two weeks,

which I'm not sure I recommend.

But I said two weeks, I
want to see are You real?

Are Your promises real?

Are you a real God?

Can You do what
You say in the Bible?

And if in two weeks You
don't show Yourself to me,

And in those two weeks
He so revealed who He was.

That was tasting God for myself.

I tasted and saw
that He was good.

So those who have
tasted of the heavenly gift

experienced God for themselves.

Let's look at the third verb.

They tasted the heavenly
gift, that's the second.

The third is, they became
partakers of the Holy Spirit.

You know, in
Galatians 5 tells us

when we walk into spirit,

we don't partake of
the works of the flesh.

If we have partaken of
the Holy Spirit, clearly,

we're walking with God.

We have the
infilling of the Holy Spirit

What's the fourth thing?
They tasted of the Word of God.

I'm reminded of 1
Peter 2:2-3, Peter talking,

"As newborn babes,

desire the pure
milk of the word,
00:09:51.22\00:09:53.69
that you may grow thereby,
if indeed you have tasted
00:09:53.72\00:09:57.03
that the Lord is gracious."

So, they were
enlightened by the Spirit,
00:09:59.59\00:10:02.93
they partook of the Spirit,

they had tasted of
the goodness of God,

they had tasted His Word,
they had walked in His Word.

And then it says, the
power of the age to come.

This refers to the miracles

that God will perform for
the believer in the future,

as well as the
miracles in the present

that He wants to do.

And yet, in spite of all this,
in spite of walking with God,

in spite of knowing His Word,

in spite of
partaking of the Holy Spirit,

you mean, they're
going to fall away?

going to turn away?

Remember, we
started at the beginning,

you don't go
from A to Z in a day.

So that decision
does not happen overnight.

You cannot be on fire for
God, walking in the Spirit,

being in His Word, witnessing,

tasting and seeing
that the Lord is good.

And you go from
here to apostasy,

to spiritual

to walking away from God.

There is a progression of
the hardening of the heart.

And I would submit to
you from this passage,

I see three steps
in that progression.

The first step is
hardness of hearing,

or the inability to listen

and where we find
that we just go back

a couple verses.

We're in Hebrews 5,
we were in Hebrews 6,

just go back to Hebrews 5:10-11.

It says, "Called
by God a High Priest

according to the
order of Melchizedek,
00:11:23.41\00:11:25.18
of whom we have much to
say, and hard to explain," why?
00:11:25.21\00:11:29.88
"Since you
became dull of hearing."
00:11:29.92\00:11:35.16
When I was growing up,
we used to say to my dad,
00:11:35.19\00:11:38.59
when he was reading, he
didn't hear anything else
00:11:38.63\00:11:40.73
but all he did was
focus on what he's reading.

And my sister
and I would tease him

and we would come
in and we would say,

"Hey, Daddy, can we have this?"

"Uh-huh." "Hey,

"Uh-huh." "Hey,

Because he's not
listening, right?

He's reading.

And then we'd
always follow it up.

This was our joke,
we always ended with,

"Is your head chopped off?"

And he would say, "Uh-huh."

So the truth is,

we hear what we
want to hear, do we not?

We can be so absorbed.

God wanted to
explain, God wanted to tell,

God wanted to teach, and
they were dull of hearing.

Are you dull of hearing?

Have you, do you
have hardness of hearing,

the inability to listen?

Hebrews 3:15, "Today,
if you hear His voice,

When God speaks to
your heart, your spirit.

Maybe you have
walked with God for years

and you've tasted and
partaken of the Holy Spirit.

But if He speaks to you in
a certain area of your life,

and you don't want to listen,
you begin to harden your heart.

That leads to number two,

the hardness of hearing
or the inability to listen

leads to number two,

which is the
hardness of heart to obey.

"Be doers of the
word and not hearers only,

deceiving your own selves."

This is the inability to
do what you know is right.

Not only are we
supposed to listen

when God speaks to us,

we need to walk in obedience
to what He tells us to do.

And step number three

is the
difficulty in understanding

spiritual things.

I believe step one
and two are combined,

the inability to hear
and the inability to obey.

They're combined to form a
lack of spiritual maturity.

We see this in Hebrews
5:12, "Though by this time,

you ought to be teachers,
00:13:30.14\00:13:31.47
you need someone
to teach you again
00:13:31.51\00:13:33.17
the first principles
of the oracles of God,
00:13:33.21\00:13:35.61
you have come to need
milk and not solid food.
00:13:35.64\00:13:38.28
For everyone who
partakes only of milk
00:13:38.31\00:13:40.32
is unskilled in the
word of righteousness.
00:13:40.35\00:13:42.78
But solid food belongs to
those who are of full age,
00:13:42.82\00:13:46.62
that is, those
who by reason of use
00:13:46.65\00:13:48.46
have their senses exercised
to discern both good and evil."

So what is Paul saying?

He's saying here that
they lack spiritual maturity,

and they lack
spiritual discernment.

And why is that?

Because they began first,

they neglected to listen to
what God tried to tell them.

So my appeal to you,
listen when God speaks,

be open to hear His
voice, and be quick to obey.

the form of religion

but they feel like they're rich

and increase with goods
and don't need anything.

They're not even aware of
their miserable condition.

And then one day,

they're just going to be spewed
out of the mouth of Christ.

So this is significant.

It's an important point

at in the Book of Hebrews,

'cause the Book of

because they are crucified once

Paul wants to stress that it is,

other way of salvation,

the whole pressure

of the Judaizers or
the pressure of the culture

and that they came from,

and the pressure of
family relationships

that would draw them back
into that and Paul saying,

"Wait, wait, wait, wait,
wait, wait, don't go back there.

I know that you've
trusted that all of these years

for these generations.

back to that now."

It's impossible for you to
find salvation in that system.

is a figurative expression
that seeks to describe

in the personal relationship

Now we're going to get
down to the nitty-gritty.

When the religious
leaders crucified Jesus,

they did it because Jesus posed
a threat to their supremacy

and autonomy.

Okay, so here comes
Jesus, He's the Messiah,

He's performing miracles,

He's preaching
these amazing sermons

that people are gathering,
hearts are being converted,
00:20:46.57\00:20:49.24
things are being
turned upside down,

and the religious
leaders don't feel like
00:20:51.15\00:20:52.81
they're the center anymore.
00:20:52.85\00:20:54.38
They're not the focus anymore.
They're not in charge anymore.
00:20:54.42\00:20:57.29
And they haven't really
put their confidence in Christ
00:20:57.32\00:21:00.16
or in John the Baptist.
00:21:00.19\00:21:01.76
And so Christ now
becomes a threat to them,

He threatens their autonomy.

And this is the
context we see in what leads

to the crucifixion
of Jesus literally.

Thus, they hope to
eliminate Jesus as a person

and destroy a
powerful and dangerous enemy.

Similarly, the gospels challenge

the sovereignty and
the self determination
00:21:23.18\00:21:26.38
of the individual at
the most fundamental level,

that's us, right?

We are now being challenged
by the gospel of Jesus Christ,

we are now being challenged
by everything we're learning

accomplished for us

So the essence of
the Christian life

the Christian life

the old man in the flesh.

This sin refers to a person

who haven't
experienced genuine salvation

and what it
implies, Hebrews 6:4-5,

everything that

decides that Jesus is a
threat to the kind of life

that he or she
wants to have, right?

Because the Jews felt that
Jesus was a threat to them.

So they crucified Him.

When we think, when we conclude,

the understanding

that Jesus is a threat to us,

that person has really tried

to solidify their
relationship with the Lord.

And this is why they name
all these different elements

or the experience
of the individual,

that gain that
experience with the Lord,

that they fall away,

and then it becomes
impossible for them to return.

And these are the people
that, you know, who come,

they come to
evangelistic campaigns wondering

because they still feel like

there's a pulling
of the Holy Spirit,

but they don't
understand what's going on.

So these people
have an opportunity.

And it's very interesting here,

when I, when you
look into the part,

they seem they crucify,
it's a present active particle,

and in the notes, a willful

and continuous
hostility to Christ.

So these are a
different type of individuals,

they refuse,

they are doing these
things in a hostile way.

And they like
refuse to turn to the Lord.

And so in Hebrews 4:6,

it says, "If they fall away

and to renew them

since they crucify again

It's different than what we find

in Galatians

This is a different experience.

But these individuals are
basically saying, "Christ,

He doesn't mean

don't have any need for Him."

Therefore, the
blood of Jesus Christ

cannot cleanse these people

because they don't
proceed to repentance.

And God works with
them but unfortunately,

these people are not coming
to that point of repentance.

This is the kind of people that

our faith on is the fact

He keeps His oath,
He keeps His covenant,

Even Romans
11:28-29, alludes to this.

It says, "Concerning the gospel,

they are enemies for your sake,
but concerning the election,

they're beloved for
the sake of the fathers."

And then verse 29, it says,

"For the gifts and the
calling of God are irrevocable."

Why? Because God's Word stands
forever, God does not change.

And so similarly
with the Psalmist now,

we see that the Psalmist
even intercedes before God

and for Israel, he claims,

So reminding God
of His oath to David.

And we see that in Psalm 89:34,

Again, it says, "My
covenant I will not break,

are going out of My lips.
