Amen. 00:02:40.49\00:02:41.82 Amen. Amen. 00:02:41.86\00:02:43.19 So Sabbath afternoon, 00:02:43.22\00:02:45.13 it's the first part of the lesson 00:02:45.16\00:02:48.20 is calling us to read verses, 00:02:48.23\00:02:50.50 Hebrews 5:1-10, Genesis 14:18-20, 00:02:50.53\00:02:54.90 1 Peter 2:9, Hebrews 7:1-3 00:02:54.94\00:02:57.84 and Hebrews 7:11-16, 22 and 26. 00:02:57.87\00:03:01.81 Our memory verse is, 00:03:01.84\00:03:04.38 "For such a High Priest was fitting for us, 00:03:04.41\00:03:07.75 who is holy, harmless, undefiled, 00:03:07.78\00:03:10.05 separate from sinners, 00:03:10.09\00:03:12.25 and has become higher than the heavens." 00:03:12.29\00:03:14.69 Hebrews 7:26. 00:03:14.72\00:03:18.19 What a powerful picture we have here of Jesus Christ. 00:03:18.23\00:03:21.20 And it's all through the Book of Hebrews. 00:03:21.23\00:03:23.67 Christ saturates the Book of Hebrews, 00:03:23.70\00:03:26.10 bringing us this amazing picture 00:03:26.13\00:03:28.10 of God's love. 00:03:28.14\00:03:29.47 Well, the lesson quarterly goes on to describe 00:03:29.50\00:03:31.27 the gulf that existed between God and us 00:03:31.31\00:03:34.68 that was caused by sin. 00:03:34.71\00:03:36.31 It says the problem was compounded 00:03:36.34\00:03:38.28 because sin also implied the corruption of our nature. 00:03:38.31\00:03:42.35 God is holy 00:03:42.38\00:03:44.49 and sin cannot exist in His presence. 00:03:44.52\00:03:46.86 So our own corrupted nature separated us from God, 00:03:46.89\00:03:51.23 just as two magnets in the wrong orientation 00:03:51.26\00:03:54.03 repel each other. 00:03:54.06\00:03:55.40 Yes. 00:03:55.43\00:03:56.77 In addition, our corrupted nature 00:03:56.80\00:03:58.67 made it impossible for human beings 00:03:58.70\00:04:01.04 in and of themselves, 00:04:01.07\00:04:02.40 to obey God's law. 00:04:02.44\00:04:04.11 Sin also involves misunderstanding. 00:04:04.14\00:04:07.51 Human beings lost sight of the love of God, 00:04:07.54\00:04:10.35 of the justice and mercy of God, 00:04:10.38\00:04:12.71 and came to see Him as wrathful and demanding 00:04:12.75\00:04:16.58 with no mercy and no grace. 00:04:16.62\00:04:19.35 This week, we're going to be studying the amazing things 00:04:19.39\00:04:22.09 that the Father and the Son have done to bridge that gulf. 00:04:22.12\00:04:25.83 Hebrews 5 through 7 provides a careful analysis 00:04:25.86\00:04:29.43 of Jesus' priesthood. 00:04:29.46\00:04:31.40 The author, Paul, analyzes its origin and purpose, 00:04:31.43\00:04:34.77 Hebrews 5:1-10. 00:04:34.80\00:04:37.01 And then exhorts readers not to disregard it, 00:04:37.04\00:04:40.08 Hebrews 5:11, 6, 8. 00:04:40.11\00:04:44.28 Hebrews 5:11-6, 8. 00:04:44.31\00:04:46.21 But rather to hold fast to the assurance 00:04:46.25\00:04:48.62 of hope it provides, 00:04:48.65\00:04:50.02 Hebrews 6:9-20. 00:04:50.05\00:04:53.52 The author also explains characteristics 00:04:53.56\00:04:56.09 of his priesthood, 00:04:56.12\00:04:57.46 Hebrews 7:1-10, 00:04:57.49\00:04:58.83 and implications for God's relationship 00:04:58.86\00:05:02.16 to believers, 00:05:02.20\00:05:03.53 Hebrews 7:11-28. 00:05:03.57\00:05:06.60 This week, we're going to focus specifically 00:05:06.63\00:05:09.17 on Hebrews 5:1-10 00:05:09.20\00:05:11.74 and Hebrews 7:1-28. 00:05:11.77\00:05:15.21 So let's begin with Sunday's lesson, 00:05:15.24\00:05:17.35 it's entitled, A Priest on Behalf of Human Beings. 00:05:17.38\00:05:21.65 We're going to read Hebrews 5:1:10. 00:05:21.68\00:05:24.12 We're not going to read those verses 00:05:24.15\00:05:25.49 but if you read Hebrews 5:1-10, 00:05:25.52\00:05:27.86 and you're going to ask yourself the question, 00:05:27.89\00:05:29.32 what is the role of the priesthood 00:05:29.36\00:05:32.16 according to this passage 00:05:32.19\00:05:34.03 and how does Jesus fulfill that role? 00:05:34.06\00:05:36.97 Now, the reason we're not going to read all those verses is 00:05:37.00\00:05:39.17 because we're a little pressed for time 00:05:39.20\00:05:40.64 and I want to cover everything 00:05:40.67\00:05:42.10 that this author has laid out for us 00:05:42.14\00:05:43.71 because it is so good. 00:05:43.74\00:05:45.57 Amen. Today's lesson is so good. 00:05:45.61\00:05:47.51 I know you all have good lessons today. 00:05:47.54\00:05:49.04 I'm very impressed with this lesson. 00:05:49.08\00:05:51.28 The author goes on to say, 00:05:51.31\00:05:52.65 "The basic purpose of the Levitical priesthood," 00:05:52.68\00:05:55.28 according to the verses we just read in Hebrews 5:1-10, 00:05:55.32\00:05:58.35 was to mediate between sinful people and God. 00:05:58.39\00:06:02.22 Priests were appointed by God 00:06:02.26\00:06:05.19 in order to minister in behalf of human beings, 00:06:05.23\00:06:08.46 therefore they needed to be merciful 00:06:08.50\00:06:11.67 and understanding of human weaknesses." 00:06:11.70\00:06:15.04 Have you ever wondered why it is 00:06:15.07\00:06:16.47 that sometimes your frailties, your weaknesses, 00:06:16.50\00:06:19.51 your failures are so exposed? 00:06:19.54\00:06:21.84 Well, they are opportunities for you to become merciful 00:06:21.88\00:06:26.28 and gracious toward others. 00:06:26.31\00:06:29.02 When we think that we're perfect, 00:06:29.05\00:06:30.62 when we think that we're just fine 00:06:30.65\00:06:31.99 and there's nothing wrong with us, 00:06:32.02\00:06:33.69 man, the standard we're going to hold others to, 00:06:33.72\00:06:35.89 it's going to be impossible for them to even breathe. 00:06:35.92\00:06:38.76 But when we realize that we stumble that we fail, 00:06:38.79\00:06:41.56 that we're imperfected, imperfect, 00:06:41.60\00:06:44.20 then it is that we can be gracious toward others. 00:06:44.23\00:06:46.67 Kind of like Peter, you know, before the fall, 00:06:46.70\00:06:49.07 "Oh, Lord, I'm not going to forsake you." 00:06:49.10\00:06:51.51 Jesus said, "You're going to." "No, I'm, not me. 00:06:51.54\00:06:53.27 I get up earlier than everyone else. 00:06:53.31\00:06:54.68 I pray longer than everyone else. 00:06:54.71\00:06:56.04 You even told me 00:06:56.08\00:06:57.41 that I was being led by the Holy Spirit. 00:06:57.45\00:06:58.78 Remember that?" 00:06:58.81\00:07:00.15 "Yeah, but I also told you, 00:07:00.18\00:07:01.52 you know, that get behind me Satan." 00:07:01.55\00:07:02.88 And then Jesus says, 00:07:02.92\00:07:04.99 "You're all going to betray Me." 00:07:05.02\00:07:07.46 And Peter says, "No, not I." 00:07:07.49\00:07:09.26 But after he actually betrayed Christ 00:07:09.29\00:07:11.49 before the cock crew, 00:07:11.53\00:07:12.86 then Peter had a humble attitude of himself. 00:07:12.89\00:07:15.33 "Do you still love me more than everyone else?" 00:07:15.36\00:07:17.17 "You know, Lord, you know." 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.10 "Do you still love Me?" 00:07:19.13\00:07:20.47 "Yeah, Lord, You know." 00:07:20.50\00:07:22.17 And that needs to be our attitude ever. 00:07:22.20\00:07:24.57 And sometimes God has to allow us 00:07:24.61\00:07:26.54 to go through some humbling experiences 00:07:26.57\00:07:28.71 in order for us to understand 00:07:28.74\00:07:30.88 that relationship that we have. 00:07:30.91\00:07:32.88 Hebrews 5:5-10. 00:07:32.91\00:07:34.58 Paul shows that Jesus perfectly fulfills 00:07:34.62\00:07:37.29 these purposes. 00:07:37.32\00:07:38.82 God appointed Him, Hebrews 5:5-6. 00:07:38.85\00:07:41.69 And also, Jesus understands us because He has also suffered, 00:07:41.72\00:07:46.06 Hebrews 5:7-8. 00:07:46.09\00:07:48.16 There are some important differences however, 00:07:48.20\00:07:51.03 Jesus was not, for example, chosen among men, Hebrews 5:1. 00:07:51.07\00:07:55.20 Instead, Jesus adopted human nature 00:07:55.24\00:07:59.54 in order among other things 00:07:59.57\00:08:01.14 to serve as a priest in our behalf. 00:08:01.18\00:08:04.35 Jesus did not offer sacrifices for His own sins, 00:08:04.38\00:08:08.52 Hebrews 5:3, 00:08:08.55\00:08:09.88 but only for our sins because He was sinless. 00:08:09.92\00:08:13.56 Hebrews 4:15. 00:08:13.59\00:08:14.96 Hebrews 7:26-28. 00:08:14.99\00:08:16.93 So Hebrew says that Jesus prayed to Him 00:08:16.96\00:08:19.16 that was able to save Him from death 00:08:19.19\00:08:21.26 and was heard, Hebrews 5:7. 00:08:21.30\00:08:23.67 Hebrews was referring to the second death 00:08:23.70\00:08:27.10 from which God saved Jesus when He resurrected Him. 00:08:27.14\00:08:30.91 Jesus experienced the second death 00:08:30.94\00:08:33.38 and was saved from that 00:08:33.41\00:08:34.91 when God resurrected Him, Hebrews 13:20. 00:08:34.94\00:08:37.88 Hebrews also says that Jesus learned obedience 00:08:37.91\00:08:40.28 through what He suffered, 00:08:40.32\00:08:41.65 Hebrews 5:8. 00:08:41.68\00:08:43.18 The author goes on to say here, obedience was new to Jesus. 00:08:43.22\00:08:47.36 Now, we talked about this in an earlier program 00:08:47.39\00:08:49.32 but the author emphasizes it again 00:08:49.36\00:08:51.23 and I can see why. 00:08:51.26\00:08:52.59 It's such a powerful thought. 00:08:52.63\00:08:54.30 Obedience was new to Jesus, not because He was disobedient, 00:08:54.33\00:08:58.30 but because He was God. 00:08:58.33\00:09:00.94 As sovereign over the universe, 00:09:00.97\00:09:02.87 Jesus did not need to obey anyone, 00:09:02.90\00:09:05.67 instead everyone obeyed Him. 00:09:05.71\00:09:08.04 Jesus suffering and death on the cross 00:09:08.08\00:09:10.31 are an essential part of His priestly man ministry. 00:09:10.35\00:09:12.61 So you imagine, the one who obeyed, 00:09:12.65\00:09:15.22 excuse me, the one who was obeyed 00:09:15.25\00:09:16.62 became the one who learned to obey. 00:09:16.65\00:09:19.02 Jesus suffering to death on the cross are essential, 00:09:19.05\00:09:21.22 essential part of His ministry. 00:09:21.26\00:09:22.59 Sufferings did not perfect Jesus in the sense 00:09:22.62\00:09:25.46 that He improved morally or ethically. 00:09:25.49\00:09:29.56 Suffering did not make Him merciful, 00:09:29.60\00:09:32.53 to the contrary Jesus came to this earth 00:09:32.57\00:09:34.90 because He always was merciful. 00:09:34.94\00:09:37.01 Praise God. 00:09:37.04\00:09:38.41 Which is why He had compassion on us, 00:09:38.44\00:09:40.78 Hebrews 2:17. 00:09:40.81\00:09:42.31 What Hebrews means is, is that through sufferings, 00:09:42.34\00:09:45.58 the reality of Jesus' brotherly love, 00:09:45.61\00:09:48.38 the authenticity of His human nature, 00:09:48.42\00:09:50.89 the depth of His submission as a representative of humanity 00:09:50.92\00:09:54.49 to the will of the Father 00:09:54.52\00:09:55.86 were truly expressed and revealed, 00:09:55.89\00:09:58.63 and we talked about that a little bit 00:09:58.66\00:10:00.23 in an earlier program. 00:10:00.26\00:10:01.76 I want to really encourage you go back and look, 00:10:01.80\00:10:04.37 if you've missed any programs, 00:10:04.40\00:10:05.73 go back and catch those programs 00:10:05.77\00:10:07.10 and catch up because every program is vital 00:10:07.14\00:10:09.64 and each one connects with the next. 00:10:09.67\00:10:11.87 Author is just has a theme running through this quarterly 00:10:11.91\00:10:14.74 and he connects it all together. 00:10:14.78\00:10:16.38 Each one builds on the other, beautiful. 00:10:16.41\00:10:19.55 Going on here, he says, "It is Christ life, His life." 00:10:19.58\00:10:25.05 I'll go, let me go back. 00:10:25.09\00:10:26.42 He was perfected in the sense 00:10:26.45\00:10:27.79 that His sufferings qualified Him 00:10:27.82\00:10:29.29 to be our High Priest. 00:10:29.32\00:10:30.83 I love that. 00:10:30.86\00:10:32.19 "It was His life of perfect obedience 00:10:32.23\00:10:34.36 and then His death on the cross 00:10:34.40\00:10:36.23 which constitutes the sacrificial offering 00:10:36.26\00:10:39.17 that Jesus presented 00:10:39.20\00:10:40.54 before the Father as our priest." 00:10:40.57\00:10:42.67 I'm going to repeat that. 00:10:42.70\00:10:44.04 And I just want you to think about this. 00:10:44.07\00:10:46.54 Just contemplate it because this is the gospel. 00:10:46.57\00:10:49.68 This is righteousness by faith. 00:10:49.71\00:10:51.95 The author says, 00:10:51.98\00:10:53.75 "It was His life of perfect obedience 00:10:53.78\00:10:56.42 and then His death on the cross 00:10:56.45\00:10:58.59 which constitutes the sacrificial offering 00:10:58.62\00:11:01.62 that Jesus presented 00:11:01.66\00:11:03.02 before the Father as our priest." 00:11:03.06\00:11:05.03 When Jesus mediates for us, 00:11:05.06\00:11:06.90 He doesn't just mediate a sacrifice 00:11:06.93\00:11:09.23 that forgives our sins. 00:11:09.26\00:11:10.80 He also mediates a sacrifice of perfect obedience 00:11:10.83\00:11:16.27 that covers our disobedience. 00:11:16.30\00:11:18.37 And this is vital. 00:11:18.41\00:11:19.74 We are not only saved by His death 00:11:19.77\00:11:21.11 but we're also saved by His life 00:11:21.14\00:11:22.91 and death of Jesus Christ. 00:11:22.94\00:11:24.95 1 Peter 2:9 says that we are royal priesthood. 00:11:24.98\00:11:29.38 So what does that mean? 00:11:29.42\00:11:31.59 What does Jesus life tell you 00:11:31.62\00:11:33.56 concerning that in relationship to other human beings? 00:11:33.59\00:11:37.43 And what is the sacred role in relationship 00:11:37.46\00:11:40.80 to how we relate to other human beings? 00:11:40.83\00:11:42.96 Okay, so we've looked at Jesus, 00:11:43.00\00:11:45.03 we're going to look at Him more as a priest. 00:11:45.07\00:11:47.30 And we now are seeing that we're called a holy priesthood 00:11:47.34\00:11:51.47 or a royal priesthood. 00:11:51.51\00:11:53.31 So when we look at Jesus, we look at His life, 00:11:53.34\00:11:56.61 we look at His mediation, we look at His sacrifice. 00:11:56.64\00:11:59.08 What does that mean to us 00:11:59.11\00:12:00.48 who accept Jesus Christ as our Savior? 00:12:00.52\00:12:02.52 How does that relate to us? 00:12:02.55\00:12:03.89 Well, we know for example 00:12:03.92\00:12:05.25 that we are called to be intercessors. 00:12:05.29\00:12:07.36 And I don't know if you've ever considered this, 00:12:07.39\00:12:08.99 but God is calling us 00:12:09.02\00:12:10.43 not just to intercede on our own behalf 00:12:10.46\00:12:12.46 but intercede on the behalf of others. 00:12:12.49\00:12:14.70 Daniel, for example, in Daniel Chapter 9, 00:12:14.73\00:12:17.30 he prayed and confess not just his sins 00:12:17.33\00:12:20.47 but the sins of others. 00:12:20.50\00:12:21.94 And he actually put himself in the place of others 00:12:21.97\00:12:25.37 as though he was the one 00:12:25.41\00:12:26.74 that was guilty of their very sins. 00:12:26.78\00:12:28.98 We call that corporate repentance. 00:12:29.01\00:12:31.78 It's not a, not corporate in the sense 00:12:31.81\00:12:33.48 that you're a part of a corporation, 00:12:33.52\00:12:35.22 corporate in the sense that you're seeing yourself 00:12:35.25\00:12:38.32 as incorporated with the body of Christ, 00:12:38.35\00:12:40.49 you're seeing yourselves as part of everyone else. 00:12:40.52\00:12:43.59 And you don't have this them in us spirit 00:12:43.63\00:12:45.69 but you have an inclusive spirit. 00:12:45.73\00:12:47.66 And because you have that spirit, 00:12:47.70\00:12:49.53 their sins are something that you need to repent of 00:12:49.56\00:12:52.77 because you're part of that body, 00:12:52.80\00:12:54.14 you're part of that group. 00:12:54.17\00:12:55.50 That was the attitude that Daniel had. 00:12:55.54\00:12:57.31 And we're called to do the same thing. 00:12:57.34\00:12:59.04 God wants us to place ourselves 00:12:59.07\00:13:02.68 in relationship to others with such an attitude 00:13:02.71\00:13:04.81 and such a spirit that Daniel had, that Ezra had. 00:13:04.85\00:13:07.62 Ezra had the same spirit, 00:13:07.65\00:13:08.98 you know, when he found out about the intermarriage 00:13:09.02\00:13:11.29 and the idolatry that was going on in Israel 00:13:11.32\00:13:14.56 after they had returned from exile. 00:13:14.59\00:13:16.42 You know what he did? 00:13:16.46\00:13:17.79 Oh, man, he was upset. 00:13:17.83\00:13:19.46 He ripped the hair out of his beard, 00:13:19.49\00:13:21.46 ripped the hair off his head, 00:13:21.50\00:13:23.40 ripped his clothes off and sat in sackcloth and ashes. 00:13:23.43\00:13:26.70 And he said, "Lord, we have sinned." 00:13:26.74\00:13:29.04 Well, he hadn't intermarried. 00:13:29.07\00:13:30.44 He hadn't been doing anything adulterous. 00:13:30.47\00:13:31.97 He hadn't been doing anything wrong. 00:13:32.01\00:13:33.34 And yet he implored God as though 00:13:33.38\00:13:35.41 he himself were guilty. 00:13:35.44\00:13:37.05 That is this attitude of corporate repentance. 00:13:37.08\00:13:39.41 Well, guess what? 00:13:39.45\00:13:40.78 That attitude, that spirit comes from Jesus Christ. 00:13:40.82\00:13:42.52 Amen. 00:13:42.55\00:13:43.89 Jesus Christ came to this earth. 00:13:43.92\00:13:45.35 And we had sinned, He hadn't sinned 00:13:45.39\00:13:47.22 and He incorporated Himself with us. 00:13:47.26\00:13:49.56 He went to the River Jordan and was baptized. 00:13:49.59\00:13:52.89 He incorporated Himself in human nature, 00:13:52.93\00:13:55.83 with the human family, 00:13:55.86\00:13:57.20 He became one with us 00:13:57.23\00:13:58.63 and He took upon Himself the responsibility 00:13:58.67\00:14:00.87 that we only should have borne 00:14:00.90\00:14:02.50 because, of course, if we would have borne that responsibility, 00:14:02.54\00:14:04.97 we wouldn't be here right now. 00:14:05.01\00:14:06.34 That's right. 00:14:06.37\00:14:07.71 Praise God for Jesus Christ, 00:14:07.74\00:14:09.08 and praise God for the wonderful message 00:14:09.11\00:14:10.71 in the Book of Hebrews. 00:14:10.75\00:14:12.08 Amen and amen. 00:14:12.11\00:14:13.45 Thank you for that wonderful foundation, 00:14:13.48\00:14:15.68 Jesus as our High Priest. 00:14:15.72\00:14:18.62 How fascinating. 00:14:18.65\00:14:19.99 In Hebrews 5:6, 00:14:20.02\00:14:25.66 it's quoting, God saying to Christ, 00:14:25.69\00:14:31.27 "You are a priest forever, 00:14:31.30\00:14:34.50 according to the order of Melchizedek." 00:14:34.54\00:14:37.71 Who is this mysterious Melchizedek? 00:14:37.74\00:14:41.58 He's only mentioned twice in the Old Testament. 00:14:41.61\00:14:45.25 And he is then again in Hebrews 5-7 00:14:45.28\00:14:49.38 mentioned several times 00:14:49.42\00:14:51.12 because the Levitical priesthood 00:14:51.15\00:14:55.36 of the Old Covenant 00:14:55.39\00:14:56.86 was based on the order of Aaron. 00:14:56.89\00:15:01.70 But Christ's priesthood 00:15:01.73\00:15:04.07 is based on the order of Melchizedek. 00:15:04.10\00:15:08.00 So Melchizedek was a Canaanite king 00:15:08.04\00:15:12.97 and priest. 00:15:13.01\00:15:15.31 Now, you know, he served as a type of Christ. 00:15:15.34\00:15:18.78 He was not Christ. 00:15:18.81\00:15:21.25 Some people have said Melchizedek was Christ. 00:15:21.28\00:15:24.22 No, he served as a representative 00:15:24.25\00:15:26.86 of God's voice in the world. 00:15:26.89\00:15:29.19 When Abraham was returning from the Valley of Sodom, 00:15:29.22\00:15:33.46 he just rescued Lot, 00:15:33.50\00:15:35.16 he'd overcome a band of raiding kings, 00:15:35.20\00:15:38.07 boy, he's loaded with booty and all this, 00:15:38.10\00:15:41.47 you know, in the war, 00:15:41.50\00:15:42.84 he'd gotten all of this good stuff. 00:15:42.87\00:15:44.64 He has a meet and greet with this king-priest, 00:15:44.67\00:15:49.04 Melchizedek. 00:15:49.08\00:15:50.61 Genesis 14, let's look at that. 00:15:50.65\00:15:53.58 Genesis 14:18 is where we'll begin. 00:15:53.62\00:15:58.82 This is what the Bible says, Genesis 14:18, 00:15:58.85\00:16:02.92 "Then Melchizedek king of Salem 00:16:02.96\00:16:05.93 brought out bread and wine, 00:16:05.96\00:16:09.00 he was the priest of God Most High." 00:16:09.03\00:16:14.30 So we know this Canaanite priest 00:16:14.34\00:16:16.77 was a worshipper of the one true God. 00:16:16.81\00:16:20.28 "He blessed Abraham, and said: 00:16:20.31\00:16:25.05 'Blessed be Abram of God Most High, 00:16:25.08\00:16:28.28 Possessor of heaven and earth.'" 00:16:28.32\00:16:30.19 That's God Most High, 00:16:30.22\00:16:31.55 who's the possessor of heaven and earth. 00:16:31.59\00:16:33.92 And verse 20, "Blessed be God Most High, 00:16:33.96\00:16:39.29 Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." 00:16:39.33\00:16:44.00 It's a beautiful blessing. 00:16:44.03\00:16:46.37 But then it says, "Abraham gave Melchizedek, 00:16:46.40\00:16:50.81 a tenth of all, all of his booty." 00:16:50.84\00:16:54.78 So Melchizedek means 00:16:54.81\00:16:56.78 king of righteousness. 00:16:56.81\00:16:59.18 He was the king of Salem, 00:16:59.21\00:17:01.25 which is another word for Jerusalem, 00:17:01.28\00:17:04.35 which means king of peace. 00:17:04.39\00:17:06.42 He was a king of righteousness, 00:17:06.45\00:17:10.13 a king of peace, 00:17:10.16\00:17:12.66 and he held two offices as king and priest. 00:17:12.69\00:17:16.63 You know, that's the only time in Israel 00:17:16.67\00:17:20.20 that a king was a priest. 00:17:20.24\00:17:22.70 No priest was ever a king, vice versa, until Christ. 00:17:22.74\00:17:27.54 So Abraham recognized how important this man was. 00:17:27.58\00:17:31.81 And he gave him a tenth of everything. 00:17:31.85\00:17:34.15 In Psalm 110:4, if you want to turn there, 00:17:34.18\00:17:38.39 Psalm 110:4, this is a Messianic Psalm. 00:17:38.42\00:17:43.83 And it refers to one 00:17:43.86\00:17:46.43 who would be a priest forever 00:17:46.46\00:17:50.07 in the order of Melchizedek. 00:17:50.10\00:17:53.40 That means he's going to be both a king and a priest. 00:17:53.44\00:17:56.17 Psalm 110:4 said, 00:17:56.20\00:17:59.07 "The Lord has sworn and He will not relent," 00:17:59.11\00:18:02.98 and He's speaking to the Messiah, 00:18:03.01\00:18:05.11 "you are a priest forever 00:18:05.15\00:18:09.58 according to the order of Melchizedek." 00:18:09.62\00:18:12.72 The order of Melchizedek was king and priest, 00:18:12.75\00:18:16.76 Jesus is both our king and priest. 00:18:16.79\00:18:20.63 So what we see is that the order of Melchizedek 00:18:20.66\00:18:25.00 presents a picture to us 00:18:25.03\00:18:28.07 of the order of Christ's priesthood. 00:18:28.10\00:18:30.94 Now, it's interesting because we know that 00:18:30.97\00:18:35.98 the kingly High Priest of Christ was superior 00:18:36.01\00:18:39.75 to the Levitical priesthood 00:18:39.78\00:18:41.95 that was established under the Law of Moses. 00:18:41.98\00:18:44.15 But let's read further. 00:18:44.19\00:18:45.79 Hebrews, if you want to turn to Hebrews 7:1. 00:18:45.82\00:18:50.33 Hebrews 7:1, 00:18:50.36\00:18:53.23 "For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, 00:18:53.26\00:18:56.67 priest to the Most High God, 00:18:56.70\00:18:59.27 who met Abraham returning from the slaughter 00:18:59.30\00:19:01.44 of the kings and blessed him, 00:19:01.47\00:19:03.17 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all." 00:19:03.20\00:19:06.91 First being translated, 00:19:06.94\00:19:08.94 and you know, it's interesting that the senate structure here 00:19:08.98\00:19:12.81 it's a little confusing. 00:19:12.85\00:19:14.62 What it's talking about first being translated 00:19:14.65\00:19:17.15 is the name of Melchizedek. 00:19:17.19\00:19:19.65 So it's first being translated king of righteousness 00:19:19.69\00:19:23.29 and then also king of Salem, 00:19:23.32\00:19:25.79 meaning king of peace. 00:19:25.83\00:19:29.46 Without father, without mother, 00:19:29.50\00:19:32.43 without genealogy and people go, 00:19:32.47\00:19:35.90 "It's going to be Jesus." 00:19:35.94\00:19:37.74 You know, that's what people do but let's go on. 00:19:37.77\00:19:41.24 It says, "Having neither beginning of days 00:19:41.28\00:19:44.45 nor end of life." 00:19:44.48\00:19:46.55 "That's got to be Jesus." 00:19:46.58\00:19:47.92 Nope. 00:19:47.95\00:19:49.45 And he said, "But made like 00:19:49.48\00:19:54.32 the Son of God 00:19:54.36\00:19:56.32 remains priest continuously." 00:19:56.36\00:19:58.33 See, Melchizedek did have a mother and a father. 00:19:58.36\00:20:03.57 He was a human being but the order of Melchizedek, 00:20:03.60\00:20:09.34 his parentage is not recorded. 00:20:09.37\00:20:11.54 The order of Melchizedek didn't matter 00:20:11.57\00:20:15.18 who his parents were. 00:20:15.21\00:20:16.54 Boy, in the Levitical priesthood, 00:20:16.58\00:20:19.15 in the order of Aaron, 00:20:19.18\00:20:20.85 it mattered a whole lot 00:20:20.88\00:20:22.28 because you had to follow all that genealogy. 00:20:22.32\00:20:25.75 But it's interesting, 00:20:25.79\00:20:27.26 the ancient Syriac Peshitta 00:20:27.29\00:20:31.53 gives a more accurate translation 00:20:31.56\00:20:35.13 of this term whose mother and father 00:20:35.16\00:20:38.00 are not written in the genealogies is an and that's 00:20:38.03\00:20:42.64 what the phrase, 00:20:42.67\00:20:44.91 who was without days, without mother, 00:20:44.94\00:20:47.21 without father is whose mother and father 00:20:47.24\00:20:51.78 are not written in the genealogies. 00:20:51.81\00:20:56.02 We just don't know who his parents were. 00:20:56.05\00:20:58.32 They weren't important. 00:20:58.35\00:21:00.29 So no record existed 00:21:00.32\00:21:04.19 of Melchizedek's birth or death. 00:21:04.23\00:21:07.43 It wasn't recorded because his ancestry, 00:21:07.46\00:21:10.83 his origin were irrelevant to his priesthood, 00:21:10.87\00:21:16.24 unlike the Levitical priesthood. 00:21:16.27\00:21:19.61 So the inspired writer of Hebrews 00:21:19.64\00:21:23.11 references Jesus priesthood 00:21:23.14\00:21:26.38 as being in the order of Melchizedek. 00:21:26.41\00:21:30.99 So in Hebrews 7:5, 00:21:31.02\00:21:33.82 it explains that Jesus was priest 00:21:33.86\00:21:37.93 in the likeness of Melchizedek. 00:21:37.96\00:21:41.03 And Hebrews 5:6, we already read in the order 00:21:41.06\00:21:44.57 according to the order of Melchizedek. 00:21:44.60\00:21:47.44 So Melchizedek resembled Christ. 00:21:47.47\00:21:52.77 But it shows us here 00:21:52.81\00:21:55.54 that he was different than Christ. 00:21:55.58\00:21:58.21 He was not a heavenly being. 00:21:58.25\00:22:00.85 If he was without parentage, 00:22:00.88\00:22:03.25 if he was without a beginning and end, 00:22:03.28\00:22:06.19 he would be God himself. 00:22:06.22\00:22:07.79 That's right. He wasn't. 00:22:07.82\00:22:09.89 There would have been no... 00:22:09.92\00:22:11.53 And if he was God himself, 00:22:11.56\00:22:13.09 there would have been no other need 00:22:13.13\00:22:14.56 for a priest to rise up at all. 00:22:14.60\00:22:17.40 So Jesus was not a successor 00:22:17.43\00:22:22.67 of Melchizedek. 00:22:22.70\00:22:24.04 I want to make that perfectly clear 00:22:24.07\00:22:27.71 but His priesthood was similar 00:22:27.74\00:22:29.88 because Jesus is King and Jesus is High Priest. 00:22:29.91\00:22:34.45 If you look at the parallels between Melchizedek and Jesus, 00:22:34.48\00:22:39.65 Jesus is the ultimate King of Righteousness, 00:22:39.69\00:22:44.56 the ultimate King of Peace 00:22:44.59\00:22:47.93 but unlike Melchizedek, 00:22:47.96\00:22:50.10 Jesus was sinless. 00:22:50.13\00:22:52.80 So that's why He became the substitute. 00:22:52.83\00:22:56.44 He was the ideal priest 00:22:56.47\00:22:59.11 who offered up the ultimate sacrifice. 00:22:59.14\00:23:03.28 That was it sufficed for all the sins 00:23:03.31\00:23:07.72 of the whole world. 00:23:07.75\00:23:09.32 So Jesus, 00:23:09.35\00:23:13.02 His priesthood is universal, 00:23:13.05\00:23:15.49 it's royal, it's righteous, it's peaceful, 00:23:15.52\00:23:20.30 it's unending, 00:23:20.33\00:23:23.06 Jesus is the final High Priest 00:23:23.10\00:23:27.84 in the history of Israel 00:23:27.87\00:23:30.11 according to the Davidic Covenant, 00:23:30.14\00:23:34.31 the seed of David who's on the throne forever. 00:23:34.34\00:23:38.11 Just want to leave you with this thought. 00:23:38.15\00:23:40.38 Our God came from heaven took on flesh 00:23:40.42\00:23:44.42 and became the person of Jesus Christ, 00:23:44.45\00:23:47.69 for the specific reason of dying for our sins, 00:23:47.72\00:23:52.03 being resurrected in the flesh 00:23:52.06\00:23:54.40 and being the new representative 00:23:54.43\00:23:56.46 at the throne of God for manhood. 00:23:56.50\00:23:58.70 That blows my mind. 00:23:58.73\00:24:00.94 It is, it to me is a bigger sacrifice 00:24:00.97\00:24:04.87 than dying on the cross 00:24:04.91\00:24:06.64 was that He took on our flesh forever. 00:24:06.68\00:24:09.21 That's right. Amen. 00:24:09.24\00:24:10.58 Yeah, that was crystal clear. 00:24:10.61\00:24:13.18 I think that is the clearest I've ever seen these verses. 00:24:13.21\00:24:15.72 Praise God. 00:24:15.75\00:24:17.62 The lights are just going on. 00:24:17.65\00:24:18.99 Praise God. Praise the Lord. 00:24:19.02\00:24:20.82 Well, we are not done. 00:24:20.86\00:24:22.22 We are going to be continuing our study as Jesus, 00:24:22.26\00:24:25.19 the Faithful Priest, so don't go away. with us, 00:25:02.43\00:25:03.77 we're going to continue our study as Jesus, 00:25:03.80\00:25:05.67 the Faithful Priest with Pastor John Lomacang. 00:25:05.70\00:25:08.30 Yes, I'm covering An Effective Priest, 00:25:08.34\00:25:11.37 and when we're looking at this story, 00:25:11.41\00:25:14.51 one of our lessons we look at the man, Christ Jesus, 00:25:14.54\00:25:17.68 now we're looking at His priestly function. 00:25:17.71\00:25:20.58 The Book of Hebrews covers 00:25:20.62\00:25:22.35 from the creation of the worlds 00:25:22.38\00:25:25.49 all the way to the restoration of humanity. 00:25:25.52\00:25:27.36 I love it. 00:25:27.39\00:25:28.72 And so it's a book that I think covers a broader span 00:25:28.76\00:25:32.23 than many of the books in the Bible 00:25:32.26\00:25:33.83 and many of them are covering 00:25:33.86\00:25:35.46 the chronological history of the Israelites, 00:25:35.50\00:25:37.80 but this one is now taken it from the man who created, 00:25:37.83\00:25:41.90 the God who created the worlds, the universes, 00:25:41.94\00:25:45.67 to the one who came down here 00:25:45.71\00:25:47.04 to get us to those universes. 00:25:47.08\00:25:49.18 So let's look at the effective priest. 00:25:49.21\00:25:51.11 One of the things about priests, 00:25:51.15\00:25:52.48 when you study the Bible, 00:25:52.51\00:25:53.88 you cannot ignore the first five books 00:25:53.92\00:25:55.98 of the Bible. 00:25:56.02\00:25:57.35 You know, you have Numbers, Deuteronomy, Leviticus, Exodus, 00:25:57.39\00:26:00.46 starts to dive into more of the functions 00:26:00.49\00:26:02.36 of the priesthood. 00:26:02.39\00:26:03.73 Genesis introduces us to humanity, its fall, 00:26:03.76\00:26:07.33 God's attempt to restore man, 00:26:07.36\00:26:11.00 or the promise to restore man, 00:26:11.03\00:26:12.77 then you have the flood, 00:26:12.80\00:26:14.60 then you have the Tower of Babel, 00:26:14.64\00:26:17.31 then you have the generations 00:26:17.34\00:26:18.67 or lineage of humanity being separated. 00:26:18.71\00:26:20.64 The nations are all over the place 00:26:20.68\00:26:22.64 because God is seeking ways 00:26:22.68\00:26:25.68 to divide them from one another, 00:26:25.71\00:26:27.82 to keep them from polluting the world as badly 00:26:27.85\00:26:33.79 as the Antediluvians did 00:26:33.82\00:26:35.52 prior to the flood. 00:26:35.56\00:26:36.96 And rebellion is now increasing significantly. 00:26:36.99\00:26:39.63 And when you look at the call of Abraham, 00:26:39.66\00:26:41.96 one of the Bible writers said that 00:26:42.00\00:26:44.70 Abraham was called by God 00:26:44.73\00:26:46.57 at one of the darkest times in human history, 00:26:46.60\00:26:49.64 when the name of God was almost obliterated 00:26:49.67\00:26:51.71 from the earth. 00:26:51.74\00:26:53.21 But so you have through that lineage, 00:26:53.24\00:26:55.14 Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, of the sons of Jacob, 00:26:55.18\00:26:57.88 you have the seed that was promised 00:26:57.91\00:26:59.41 in the Book of Genesis 00:26:59.45\00:27:00.92 and that seed led to the priesthood of Christ, 00:27:00.95\00:27:03.55 which now as Shelley laid the foundation, 00:27:03.59\00:27:05.99 you compare that to Melchizedek, 00:27:06.02\00:27:07.72 not the Levitical priesthood, 00:27:07.76\00:27:09.09 which was temporary. 00:27:09.12\00:27:10.46 But there were so many things about 00:27:10.49\00:27:11.83 the priesthood of earthly human beings, 00:27:11.86\00:27:13.83 who lived short lives, 00:27:13.86\00:27:15.50 who had to provide sacrifices for themselves, 00:27:15.53\00:27:18.33 who were frail in every particular, 00:27:18.37\00:27:20.74 then you compare it to the priesthood of Jesus. 00:27:20.77\00:27:23.14 So let's look at Hebrews 7:11. 00:27:23.17\00:27:26.74 Let's look at why the priesthood of humanity 00:27:26.78\00:27:31.15 could not compare to the priesthood of Jesus. 00:27:31.18\00:27:34.62 Hebrews 7:11, "Therefore, 00:27:34.65\00:27:36.85 if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood 00:27:36.89\00:27:40.49 for under it the people receive the law, 00:27:40.52\00:27:43.39 what further need was there that another priest should rise 00:27:43.43\00:27:48.23 according to the order of Melchizedek?" 00:27:48.26\00:27:50.47 And Shelley, I don't have to spend time on that, 00:27:50.50\00:27:52.67 because you did that. 00:27:52.70\00:27:54.07 And not be called according to the order of Aaron. 00:27:54.10\00:27:57.61 In the Levitical priesthood, 00:27:57.64\00:27:58.97 you find now only where the ceremonies 00:27:59.01\00:28:01.34 and the sacrifices outlined, 00:28:01.38\00:28:03.71 but because of the ceremonies and sacrifices 00:28:03.75\00:28:07.08 the priesthood had... 00:28:07.12\00:28:10.05 I'm just going to try to say, 00:28:10.09\00:28:11.42 try to find a nice way to say this, 00:28:11.45\00:28:13.49 the set, it was a bloody system 00:28:13.52\00:28:16.26 and none of these animals had the sufficiency 00:28:16.29\00:28:18.43 or the efficacy to really cleanse the person 00:28:18.46\00:28:22.96 who brought the sacrifices. 00:28:23.00\00:28:24.33 Can you imagine, 00:28:24.37\00:28:25.70 you stood there and you watch the priest, 00:28:25.73\00:28:27.40 you watch the throat of the lamb 00:28:27.44\00:28:29.60 being slit and the blood being drained 00:28:29.64\00:28:31.57 and all the sacrifice being burned 00:28:31.61\00:28:34.14 and the sprinkling of the blood. 00:28:34.18\00:28:35.78 It was quite a spectacular to watch 00:28:35.81\00:28:39.41 and this happened day in and day out 00:28:39.45\00:28:41.25 and day in and day out continuously. 00:28:41.28\00:28:44.05 So you look at that system, you say, 00:28:44.09\00:28:46.12 "That was faulty to a large degree." 00:28:46.15\00:28:48.29 These animals could not cleanse the conscience 00:28:48.32\00:28:51.16 even though it was an act of faith of forgiving the sin. 00:28:51.19\00:28:55.00 It just couldn't cleanse the conscience. 00:28:55.03\00:28:57.10 Look at Hebrews 10:1-3. 00:28:57.13\00:29:00.27 That's why it was just a temporary thing. 00:29:00.30\00:29:02.97 Hebrews 10:1-3. 00:29:03.00\00:29:04.77 It says, "For the law 00:29:04.81\00:29:06.14 having a shadow of the good things to come 00:29:06.17\00:29:08.94 and not the very image of the things 00:29:08.98\00:29:11.01 can never make these same sacrifices 00:29:11.05\00:29:14.88 which they offered," how? 00:29:14.92\00:29:16.69 "Continually, year by year, 00:29:16.72\00:29:21.19 make those who approach perfect. 00:29:21.22\00:29:24.56 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? 00:29:24.59\00:29:27.76 For the worshipers once purged 00:29:27.80\00:29:30.87 would have had no more consciousness 00:29:30.90\00:29:33.03 of sin." 00:29:33.07\00:29:34.40 But in those sacrifices, 00:29:34.44\00:29:36.94 there is a reminder of sin every year. 00:29:36.97\00:29:42.14 It's like how long. 00:29:42.18\00:29:44.48 Can you think back on how long they waited for the Redeemer? 00:29:44.51\00:29:47.78 Can we say thousands? 00:29:47.82\00:29:50.02 Can we say hundreds of thousands? 00:29:50.05\00:29:51.72 Can we possibly say maybe millions, 00:29:51.75\00:29:53.82 more than a million? 00:29:53.86\00:29:55.52 The blood was just... 00:29:55.56\00:29:57.66 I mean the cleansing of the sanctuary 00:29:57.69\00:29:59.03 wasn't necessary 00:29:59.06\00:30:00.40 because of just the thought of all the blood 00:30:00.43\00:30:02.80 that was being sprinkled for the remission of sin. 00:30:02.83\00:30:05.87 Then you have Hebrews 9:14, it now compares 00:30:05.90\00:30:09.10 what I just read to the sufficiency of Christ. 00:30:09.14\00:30:11.74 Amen. 00:30:11.77\00:30:13.11 "How much more shall the blood of Christ 00:30:13.14\00:30:16.64 who through the eternal Spirit 00:30:16.68\00:30:20.35 offered himself without spot to God, 00:30:20.38\00:30:24.22 cleanse your conscious from dead works 00:30:24.25\00:30:26.79 to serve the living God?" 00:30:26.82\00:30:29.86 When Jesus gave His life to save you and to save me, 00:30:29.89\00:30:33.03 it was not just to save us eternally, 00:30:33.06\00:30:35.43 but it was to purify us, 00:30:35.46\00:30:38.13 to sanctify us and to glorify us. 00:30:38.17\00:30:41.70 Let me say that again, to justify us, 00:30:41.74\00:30:44.14 to sanctify us and to ultimately glorify, 00:30:44.17\00:30:48.01 lead us to the position of glorification, 00:30:48.04\00:30:50.31 not to glorify us, 00:30:50.35\00:30:51.71 but lead us to that point 00:30:51.75\00:30:53.08 where we could experience the glorification 00:30:53.11\00:30:54.92 that comes in the eradication of sin. 00:30:54.95\00:30:57.65 That's something that the priesthood 00:30:57.69\00:30:59.02 on earth couldn't do. 00:30:59.05\00:31:00.39 Now there was this, 00:31:00.42\00:31:01.76 where there's no shedding of blood, 00:31:01.79\00:31:03.12 there's no remission of sin. 00:31:03.16\00:31:04.49 But every day, every day, 00:31:04.53\00:31:05.86 Abraham's sacrifice for his family, 00:31:05.89\00:31:07.93 you find Job, 00:31:07.96\00:31:09.30 you find all through the Bible the sacrificial system 00:31:09.33\00:31:12.37 in effect all through the scriptures. 00:31:12.40\00:31:14.57 And even after Jesus died, 00:31:14.60\00:31:17.01 some of the Jews tried to impose 00:31:17.04\00:31:19.04 that very same thing on the Gentiles. 00:31:19.07\00:31:21.41 Let's go to 1 Corinthians 7:19. 00:31:21.44\00:31:23.81 And then Paul had to make a very definitive statement 00:31:23.85\00:31:26.55 to the Corinthians 00:31:26.58\00:31:27.95 because the Jewish leaders 00:31:27.98\00:31:29.35 who rejected Jesus just couldn't see the efficacy 00:31:29.38\00:31:31.82 and the sufficiency of His blood. 00:31:31.85\00:31:33.76 And they were even trying to enforce circumcision 00:31:33.79\00:31:37.09 on the Gentile believers. 00:31:37.13\00:31:38.99 But notice what the Lord says, 1 Corinthians 7:19. 00:31:39.03\00:31:42.83 Okay, we find here. 00:31:42.86\00:31:47.17 Let's start with verse 18. 00:31:47.20\00:31:48.57 "Was anyone called while circumcised? 00:31:48.60\00:31:51.94 Let him not be uncircumcised. 00:31:51.97\00:31:54.61 Was anyone called while uncircumcised? 00:31:54.64\00:31:57.38 Let him not be circumcised." 00:31:57.41\00:31:59.31 Paul is saying, doesn't really matter 00:31:59.35\00:32:01.02 which one you're in, 00:32:01.05\00:32:02.48 because neither one is of any point right now. 00:32:02.52\00:32:05.29 Verse 19, "Circumcision is nothing 00:32:05.32\00:32:09.22 and uncircumcision is nothing, 00:32:09.26\00:32:11.36 but keeping the commandments of God is what matters." 00:32:11.39\00:32:15.20 And so, when you try to impose circumcision 00:32:15.23\00:32:17.60 for the necessity of being a part of a sacrificial system, 00:32:17.63\00:32:20.27 which had only a duration of time, 00:32:20.30\00:32:22.80 it was added because of sin, 00:32:22.84\00:32:24.64 till the Seed should come, Galatians 3:19. 00:32:24.67\00:32:27.51 It was added, meaning it was added because of sin. 00:32:27.54\00:32:31.25 Therefore, there was a law in place 00:32:31.28\00:32:33.08 before the law that included the sacrificial system 00:32:33.11\00:32:36.72 was added, 00:32:36.75\00:32:38.09 it was added. 00:32:38.12\00:32:39.45 This law was added because that law was violated. 00:32:39.49\00:32:41.22 Amen. 00:32:41.26\00:32:42.59 This law was added because that law was violated 00:32:42.62\00:32:44.39 but this law was added till the Seed should come. 00:32:44.43\00:32:47.36 It only had a duration. 00:32:47.40\00:32:48.76 When the Seed came, it was no longer necessary. 00:32:48.80\00:32:51.23 The unfortunate part is some Christian leaders 00:32:51.27\00:32:53.10 put both of them in the same category. 00:32:53.13\00:32:54.64 Right. 00:32:54.67\00:32:56.00 No, we still have sin today. 00:32:56.04\00:32:57.54 But the sin bearer, the sin partner, the justifier, 00:32:57.57\00:33:01.74 the sanctifier is the one who got rid of that law 00:33:01.78\00:33:04.98 that was added till He came here, till He got here, 00:33:05.01\00:33:08.72 till the Seed should come, Galatians 3:19. 00:33:08.75\00:33:12.05 And now we go to Hebrews 7:18-19. 00:33:12.09\00:33:15.52 The earthly priesthood was temporary 00:33:15.56\00:33:17.23 held by frail men. 00:33:17.26\00:33:19.49 "For on the one hand, 00:33:19.53\00:33:22.43 there is an annulling of the former commandment 00:33:22.46\00:33:25.67 because of its weakness and unprofitableness." 00:33:25.70\00:33:30.44 Verse 19, "For the law made nothing perfect, 00:33:30.47\00:33:33.71 on the other hand, 00:33:33.74\00:33:35.08 there is the bringing in of a better hope, 00:33:35.11\00:33:38.48 through which we draw near to God." 00:33:38.51\00:33:41.95 What was the writer saying? 00:33:41.98\00:33:43.82 There's only one mediator between man and God, 00:33:43.85\00:33:47.49 the man Christ Jesus. 00:33:47.52\00:33:49.16 The priests were symbols of the mediator, 00:33:49.19\00:33:51.99 but Jesus Himself is the mediator. 00:33:52.03\00:33:54.83 Is that a better priesthood? 00:33:54.86\00:33:56.20 Is that a better sacrifice? 00:33:56.23\00:33:57.57 Oh, yeah. Far greater. 00:33:57.60\00:33:58.93 Is that a more effective priesthood? 00:33:58.97\00:34:00.30 Far greater. 00:34:00.34\00:34:01.67 You could not get any more effective priesthood 00:34:01.70\00:34:03.04 than the priesthood of Jesus, 00:34:03.07\00:34:04.47 because there is no other name given among men 00:34:04.51\00:34:07.61 whereby we must be saved than the name of Jesus. 00:34:07.64\00:34:10.58 Now, let's see how effective it was. 00:34:10.61\00:34:12.91 Hebrews 7:25. 00:34:12.95\00:34:14.32 Let's look at this. 00:34:14.35\00:34:16.05 "Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost." 00:34:16.08\00:34:21.46 In New York, we used to say 00:34:21.49\00:34:22.82 from the gutter most to the uttermost. 00:34:22.86\00:34:25.16 He saved from the gutter most to the uttermost. 00:34:25.19\00:34:27.13 Thank you. 00:34:27.16\00:34:28.50 Those who come to God through Him. 00:34:28.53\00:34:31.07 How effective was His priesthood 00:34:31.10\00:34:32.80 since He ever lives? 00:34:32.83\00:34:34.50 I love the way the King James says, 00:34:34.54\00:34:35.87 since He ever lives, 00:34:35.90\00:34:37.24 always lives to make intercession for them. 00:34:37.27\00:34:40.88 How were we redeemed? 00:34:40.91\00:34:42.44 What makes His redemption so beautiful? 00:34:42.48\00:34:45.81 1 Peter 1:18-19, 00:34:45.85\00:34:47.48 "Knowing that you are not redeemed 00:34:47.52\00:34:49.68 with corruptible things, 00:34:49.72\00:34:51.05 like silver or gold, 00:34:51.09\00:34:52.75 from your aimless conduct received 00:34:52.79\00:34:54.86 by tradition from your fathers, 00:34:54.89\00:34:56.93 but with the precious blood of Christ 00:34:56.96\00:35:00.93 as of a lamb without blemish and without spot." 00:35:00.96\00:35:04.40 Was He an effective priest? 00:35:04.43\00:35:06.97 That's an understatement. 00:35:07.00\00:35:08.34 But the answer is, yes. 00:35:08.37\00:35:09.84 Amen. Amen. 00:35:09.87\00:35:11.24 Thank you so much, Pastor John and Shelley and Pastor James, 00:35:11.27\00:35:14.88 what an incredible study because we're looking at Jesus, 00:35:14.91\00:35:17.28 we're looking at Jesus as our High Priest. 00:35:17.31\00:35:20.22 But what I liked the most 00:35:20.25\00:35:21.75 about this lesson just now 00:35:21.78\00:35:23.69 is you all are crystal clear. 00:35:23.72\00:35:25.45 If there's ever any doubt 00:35:25.49\00:35:28.42 as far as what, 00:35:28.46\00:35:30.76 who was Melchizedek? 00:35:30.79\00:35:32.13 And what does that even mean? 00:35:32.16\00:35:33.53 And how is Christ a priest after the order of Melchizedek? 00:35:33.56\00:35:37.43 The clarity, Shelley, I love that. 00:35:37.47\00:35:39.80 Melchizedek being the king and priest combined together 00:35:39.83\00:35:43.81 as we see in the man, Christ Jesus. 00:35:43.84\00:35:46.24 Pastor John, the efficacy of Jesus 00:35:46.27\00:35:49.14 as opposed to the Levitical system, 00:35:49.18\00:35:51.85 the sacrificial system, 00:35:51.88\00:35:53.45 which was put in place until the Seed should come. 00:35:53.48\00:35:56.55 I love that, such clarity. 00:35:56.58\00:35:58.92 Thank you very much. 00:35:58.95\00:36:00.29 So I'm going to actually share some of the same stuff. 00:36:00.32\00:36:02.96 We're looking at Wednesday's lesson, 00:36:02.99\00:36:05.03 which is An Eternal Priest. 00:36:05.06\00:36:08.63 And we're comparing the Levitical priesthood 00:36:08.66\00:36:12.87 which Pastor John did an incredible job of, 00:36:12.90\00:36:15.67 with Jesus as our high priest. 00:36:15.70\00:36:19.17 And I want to compare it in five different areas, 00:36:19.21\00:36:22.88 sin, mortality, sacrifice, 00:36:22.91\00:36:27.58 mediator and covenant. 00:36:27.62\00:36:29.85 And some of this will be some crossover 00:36:29.88\00:36:31.59 from what you shared. 00:36:31.62\00:36:32.95 Sin, mortality, sacrifice, mediator and covenant. 00:36:32.99\00:36:37.09 So let's look at sin. 00:36:37.13\00:36:38.49 The earthly priests, the Levitical system 00:36:38.53\00:36:40.73 that was set up as Pastor John already talked about, 00:36:40.76\00:36:44.30 they're sinful humans. 00:36:44.33\00:36:45.67 The priesthood themselves were sinful humans, 00:36:45.70\00:36:49.24 bringing the sacrifice before a holy God. 00:36:49.27\00:36:53.58 They were acting, you could say on behalf of God, 00:36:53.61\00:36:58.11 but still they were sinful in their humanity. 00:36:58.15\00:37:01.88 We see in Hebrews 5, turn to Hebrews Chapter 5. 00:37:01.92\00:37:05.39 We'll look at verses 2 and 3. 00:37:05.42\00:37:07.86 "He, this is every high priest can have compassion on those 00:37:07.89\00:37:12.03 who are ignorant and going astray, 00:37:12.06\00:37:14.96 since he himself is also subject to weakness. 00:37:15.00\00:37:18.53 Because of this, he is required is for the people, 00:37:18.57\00:37:21.17 so for himself to offer sacrifices for sins." 00:37:21.20\00:37:26.71 What's he saying? 00:37:26.74\00:37:28.08 That the priesthood, the Levitical priesthood 00:37:28.11\00:37:30.31 that was put in place, 00:37:30.35\00:37:32.08 they were sinful 00:37:32.11\00:37:33.45 because they were required to offer sacrifices, 00:37:33.48\00:37:35.55 not just for the people 00:37:35.58\00:37:36.92 and the people who came and confess their sins 00:37:36.95\00:37:39.69 over the head of the lamb or the goat. 00:37:39.72\00:37:42.19 They were required to offer sacrifices 00:37:42.22\00:37:45.19 for their own sins. 00:37:45.23\00:37:47.83 But Jesus as our High Priest, 00:37:47.86\00:37:50.70 as our effective High Priest and eternal High Priest 00:37:50.73\00:37:54.74 is the perfect High Priest. 00:37:54.77\00:37:56.30 He lived the perfect life. 00:37:56.34\00:37:59.21 He was the perfect substitute. 00:37:59.24\00:38:01.94 And He could make atonement once and for all. 00:38:01.98\00:38:04.08 Let's look at Hebrews 7: 26-27. 00:38:04.11\00:38:08.28 "For such a High Priest," this is referring to Jesus, 00:38:08.32\00:38:11.09 "was fitting for us, who is," what's that word? 00:38:11.12\00:38:14.42 "Holy, who is harmless, undefiled, 00:38:14.46\00:38:19.36 separate from sinners." 00:38:19.39\00:38:20.73 I just want to stop a second. 00:38:20.76\00:38:22.10 You think of the Levitical priesthood, 00:38:22.13\00:38:23.47 were they holy? 00:38:23.50\00:38:24.83 No. They were sinful. 00:38:24.87\00:38:26.47 Were they harmless? No. 00:38:26.50\00:38:28.37 Were they undefiled? Absolutely not. 00:38:28.40\00:38:30.71 They were defiled with sin. 00:38:30.74\00:38:32.77 Were they separate from sinners? 00:38:32.81\00:38:34.14 No, they were part of the sinful humanity. 00:38:34.18\00:38:38.81 Jesus has become higher than the heavens, 00:38:38.85\00:38:42.02 who does not need daily 00:38:42.05\00:38:43.39 as those high priests to offer sacrifices, 00:38:43.42\00:38:46.15 first for His own sins 00:38:46.19\00:38:47.52 and then for the people's. 00:38:47.56\00:38:48.89 For this He did once for all when He offered Himself. 00:38:48.92\00:38:52.83 Amen. 00:38:52.86\00:38:54.20 So that sacrificial system, 00:38:54.23\00:38:55.56 as Pastor John brought out so beautifully 00:38:55.60\00:38:56.93 was pointing forward to the Messiah, 00:38:56.97\00:39:00.40 pointing forward to Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God 00:39:00.44\00:39:04.31 who would take away the sins of the world. 00:39:04.34\00:39:05.94 So that's the comparison of sin. 00:39:05.97\00:39:07.84 Let's look at the comparison of mortality. 00:39:07.88\00:39:10.91 The earthly Levitical priests 00:39:10.95\00:39:12.81 certainly were mortal, were they not? 00:39:12.85\00:39:15.28 Hebrews 7: 23, "Also, there were many priests 00:39:15.32\00:39:21.12 because they were prevented by death from continuing." 00:39:21.16\00:39:25.36 Deuteronomy Chapter 18 talks about 00:39:25.39\00:39:27.23 the Levitical priesthood as Shelley brought out, 00:39:27.26\00:39:29.16 was hereditary. 00:39:29.20\00:39:30.83 Another words, that went down from father to son 00:39:30.87\00:39:33.54 and there was this very consistent 00:39:33.57\00:39:35.64 genealogy you could say, 00:39:35.67\00:39:37.21 of the, to be a priest, 00:39:37.24\00:39:38.64 you had to be of the tribe of Levi. 00:39:38.67\00:39:41.81 It followed that specific genealogy. 00:39:41.84\00:39:44.25 But yet they were mortal. 00:39:44.28\00:39:45.85 They only lived so many years and then they died. 00:39:45.88\00:39:49.32 But Jesus as our High Priest is eternal. 00:39:49.35\00:39:53.32 Amen. Paul doesn't stop there. 00:39:53.36\00:39:54.76 Verse 23, it goes on to verse 24. 00:39:54.79\00:39:57.53 I love that. 00:39:57.56\00:39:58.89 "But He," that's Jesus, "because He continues forever, 00:39:58.93\00:40:03.87 has an unchangeable priesthood." 00:40:03.90\00:40:07.87 Yes. He continues forever. 00:40:07.90\00:40:10.57 God alone, 1 Timothy 6:16, "God alone has immortality." 00:40:10.61\00:40:16.44 Amen. 00:40:16.48\00:40:17.81 Jesus the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. 00:40:17.85\00:40:22.22 Jesus, the pre-existent One 00:40:22.25\00:40:24.49 existing with the Father 00:40:24.52\00:40:25.85 from before the foundation of the world 00:40:25.89\00:40:28.06 became flesh for you and I. 00:40:28.09\00:40:30.49 The perfect life, the perfect Lamb of God, 00:40:30.53\00:40:33.40 the perfect sacrifice to put an end, 00:40:33.43\00:40:35.96 of course, to that sacrificial system 00:40:36.00\00:40:37.90 because Jesus came, 00:40:37.93\00:40:39.57 the eternal High Priest to forgive us 00:40:39.60\00:40:44.17 and to cleanse us and to intercede for us 00:40:44.21\00:40:47.74 or transitioning into sacrifice. 00:40:47.78\00:40:49.38 So let's go there. 00:40:49.41\00:40:50.75 The earthly Levitical priests, what did they offer? 00:40:50.78\00:40:53.18 They offered animal sacrifices, did they not? 00:40:53.21\00:40:56.35 They offered sheep and lambs and goats and bulls. 00:40:56.38\00:41:01.32 They offered those burnt offerings, 00:41:01.36\00:41:04.86 the grain offering, the peace offering, 00:41:04.89\00:41:06.93 the sin offering, the trespass offering, 00:41:06.96\00:41:09.16 all of those offerings, those animal sacrifices, 00:41:09.20\00:41:12.67 they weren't all animal, the grain, of course, was not. 00:41:12.70\00:41:15.40 But they all were symbols 00:41:15.44\00:41:17.84 or types pointing forward to Jesus, 00:41:17.87\00:41:21.88 who would be the Lamb of God 00:41:21.91\00:41:23.88 who takes away the sin of the world. 00:41:23.91\00:41:25.61 Hebrews 9:28, we see Christ was offered once 00:41:25.65\00:41:31.29 to bear the sins of many. 00:41:31.32\00:41:33.12 You see, He didn't have to offer His life many times, 00:41:33.15\00:41:36.02 it wasn't every time we sin, He has to be offered again. 00:41:36.06\00:41:39.46 He offered once because His perfect life 00:41:39.49\00:41:43.13 and His perfect death satisfied the claims of the law. 00:41:43.16\00:41:47.94 The wages of sin is death, yes, 00:41:47.97\00:41:50.14 but the gift of God is eternal life 00:41:50.17\00:41:52.74 through Christ Jesus, our Lord. 00:41:52.77\00:41:55.08 Pastor John referenced this Hebrews 9:12, 00:41:55.11\00:41:57.75 "Not with the blood of goats and calves, 00:41:57.78\00:42:00.18 but with His own blood 00:42:00.22\00:42:02.08 He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, 00:42:02.12\00:42:05.55 having obtained eternal redemption." 00:42:05.59\00:42:08.32 Jump down to verse 14, 00:42:08.36\00:42:10.53 "How much more shall the blood of Christ, 00:42:10.56\00:42:13.36 who through the eternal Spirit 00:42:13.40\00:42:14.73 offered Himself without spot to God, 00:42:14.76\00:42:17.33 cleanse your conscience from dead works 00:42:17.37\00:42:20.14 to serve the living Christ?" 00:42:20.17\00:42:21.67 You see the Israelites with the sacrificial system, 00:42:21.70\00:42:24.37 the Levitical system. 00:42:24.41\00:42:25.81 That offering, the slaying of the animal, 00:42:25.84\00:42:27.94 the offering of the animal, that didn't cleanse them. 00:42:27.98\00:42:30.68 It was by faith, 00:42:30.71\00:42:32.18 looking forward to the coming Messiah. 00:42:32.21\00:42:35.52 It was Jesus' blood that was sacrifice that 00:42:35.55\00:42:39.09 saved us all those sins from the past 00:42:39.12\00:42:41.66 and all those sins in the future. 00:42:41.69\00:42:43.79 If we confess our sins, 00:42:43.83\00:42:45.99 He's faithful and just to forgive us 00:42:46.03\00:42:48.00 our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 00:42:48.03\00:42:52.37 Hebrews 2:17 says, "Jesus is the one who came 00:42:52.40\00:42:55.90 and made propitiation for the sins of the people." 00:42:55.94\00:43:00.41 Now, let's look at point number four. 00:43:00.44\00:43:01.78 That's the mediator. 00:43:01.81\00:43:03.48 The earthly Levitical priests, 00:43:03.51\00:43:05.45 they mediated between God and the people. 00:43:05.48\00:43:07.98 Now, they really couldn't mediate 00:43:08.02\00:43:09.52 because Jesus is the only mediator. 00:43:09.55\00:43:11.65 But they stood in the place you could say, of God, 00:43:11.69\00:43:15.56 to bring that atonement between God and the people. 00:43:15.59\00:43:19.23 You can read Leviticus Chapter 16 00:43:19.26\00:43:21.13 and see that laid out very clearly. 00:43:21.16\00:43:23.63 Jesus, Hebrews 7:25, I want to read it again. 00:43:23.67\00:43:27.47 "Therefore, He Jesus, is also able to save to the uttermost," 00:43:27.50\00:43:32.14 He's able to save completely, forever, 00:43:32.17\00:43:35.61 perfectly through all time, 00:43:35.64\00:43:38.71 "those who come to God through Him, 00:43:38.75\00:43:41.02 since He always lives to make intercession for them." 00:43:41.05\00:43:44.65 I don't know about you. 00:43:44.69\00:43:46.19 Have you ever felt like God couldn't save you? 00:43:46.22\00:43:48.56 Have you ever felt like you've done too much? 00:43:48.59\00:43:51.33 You've gone too far. 00:43:51.36\00:43:53.16 You've traveled down the road 00:43:53.19\00:43:55.03 or maybe you know that He's forgiven you 00:43:55.06\00:43:57.63 and cleansed you and you messed up again. 00:43:57.67\00:44:01.24 Sometimes I say, God, seriously, 00:44:01.27\00:44:03.67 I thought I got victory over that, Pastor Ryan. 00:44:03.71\00:44:06.01 I thought, you know, 00:44:06.04\00:44:07.38 I was really walking in victory. 00:44:07.41\00:44:08.74 And all of a sudden, something happens. 00:44:08.78\00:44:10.81 And I think that old woman of sin 00:44:10.85\00:44:13.28 is trying to rise up again. 00:44:13.31\00:44:14.95 And I have to go back to my Savior 00:44:14.98\00:44:17.32 and know that He not only forgives and cleanses, 00:44:17.35\00:44:19.85 He's right now interceding 00:44:19.89\00:44:21.66 at the right hand of the Father and He can save completely, 00:44:21.69\00:44:25.79 utterly for all time. 00:44:25.83\00:44:28.53 Number five, the last comparison 00:44:28.56\00:44:30.43 is the covenant. 00:44:30.47\00:44:31.80 The first covenant we see 00:44:31.83\00:44:33.17 was dedicated with blood, was it not? 00:44:33.20\00:44:34.94 You can read that in Exodus 24. 00:44:34.97\00:44:37.01 But Paul references it in Hebrews 9:18. 00:44:37.04\00:44:39.77 "Therefore not even the first covenant 00:44:39.81\00:44:41.81 was dedicated without blood." 00:44:41.84\00:44:44.41 What about the New Covenant? 00:44:44.45\00:44:45.78 The New Covenant is dedicated 00:44:45.81\00:44:47.52 and ratified with Christ's blood? 00:44:47.55\00:44:50.12 Hebrews 9:15, "For this reason, 00:44:50.15\00:44:52.12 He, Jesus, is the mediator of the New Covenant 00:44:52.15\00:44:55.06 by means of death for the redemption 00:44:55.09\00:44:57.53 of the transgression under the first covenant 00:44:57.56\00:44:59.86 that those who are called 00:44:59.89\00:45:01.23 may receive the promise of eternal inheritance." 00:45:01.26\00:45:04.87 Jesus' death on behalf of the transgressors, 00:45:04.90\00:45:07.87 both attested to the validity of the Old Covenant 00:45:07.90\00:45:11.04 and redeemed us from death. 00:45:11.07\00:45:13.41 In addition, it inaugurated the New Covenant. 00:45:13.44\00:45:17.51 Wow! Flawless. 00:45:17.55\00:45:19.35 Thank you so much. That was very nice. 00:45:19.38\00:45:21.58 I'm Ryan Day and I have Thursday's lesson 00:45:21.62\00:45:23.62 entitled A Sinless Priest. 00:45:23.65\00:45:26.76 And we're going to dive right into this 00:45:26.79\00:45:28.16 because the premise on 00:45:28.19\00:45:29.52 which this whole section is built, 00:45:29.56\00:45:30.99 is built on the message that we find in Hebrews 7:26. 00:45:31.03\00:45:36.43 This verse has already been read, 00:45:36.46\00:45:37.90 I think a couple of times throughout this lesson 00:45:37.93\00:45:40.30 but we're going to go 00:45:40.34\00:45:41.74 and we're going to focus in and go a little deeper 00:45:41.77\00:45:44.54 into the details we find there in. 00:45:44.57\00:45:46.17 So Hebrews 7:26, describing Jesus Christ it says, 00:45:46.21\00:45:50.98 for such a High Priest, 00:45:51.01\00:45:53.52 was fitting for us, who is holy, 00:45:53.55\00:45:58.69 harmless, undefiled, 00:45:58.72\00:46:01.36 separate from sinners and has become higher 00:46:01.39\00:46:04.69 than the heavens. 00:46:04.73\00:46:06.26 And the lesson brings out that 00:46:06.29\00:46:07.63 these five characteristics or divine, 00:46:07.66\00:46:10.70 expressing the divine nature of Jesus Christ. 00:46:10.73\00:46:13.30 Of course, is what ultimately makes Him to be fitting 00:46:13.34\00:46:15.97 as our High Priest that He is holy, 00:46:16.00\00:46:18.41 He is harmless, He is undefiled, 00:46:18.44\00:46:20.21 He is separate from sinners 00:46:20.24\00:46:22.08 and, of course, has become higher than the heavens. 00:46:22.11\00:46:24.51 So let's take the first one here, 00:46:24.55\00:46:25.88 Jesus is holy, very clear. 00:46:25.91\00:46:29.05 Hebrews 4:15. 00:46:29.08\00:46:31.62 It says, "For we do not have a High Priest 00:46:31.65\00:46:33.52 who cannot sympathize with our weakness, 00:46:33.56\00:46:37.06 but was in all points tempted as we are," 00:46:37.09\00:46:39.93 here it is again, "yet without sin." 00:46:39.96\00:46:43.23 Jesus is holy, He has never sinned. 00:46:43.26\00:46:46.74 Sin did not overcome Him, 00:46:46.77\00:46:48.70 because He surrendered to the will of His Father. 00:46:48.74\00:46:51.31 He allowed the righteousness of His Father 00:46:51.34\00:46:53.51 to become His own and therefore, 00:46:53.54\00:46:55.18 He is righteous, He is holy, He is yet without sin. 00:46:55.21\00:46:58.71 Hebrews 5:7-9, let's go there. 00:46:58.75\00:47:01.25 Hebrews 5:7-9, 00:47:01.28\00:47:02.85 again, under this concept of Christ is holy. 00:47:02.88\00:47:05.49 "Who, in the last days of His flesh, 00:47:05.52\00:47:07.96 when He had offered up prayers and supplications, 00:47:07.99\00:47:10.33 with vehement cries and tears to Him 00:47:10.36\00:47:12.29 who was able to save Him from death, 00:47:12.33\00:47:14.53 and was heard because of His godly fear," 00:47:14.56\00:47:18.73 notice it says, "though He was a Son, 00:47:18.77\00:47:21.20 yet He learned obedience by the things 00:47:21.24\00:47:23.74 which He suffered. 00:47:23.77\00:47:25.57 And having been perfected, 00:47:25.61\00:47:27.51 He became the author of eternal salvation 00:47:27.54\00:47:30.51 to all who obey Him." 00:47:30.55\00:47:33.11 And so, my friends, we're talking about 00:47:33.15\00:47:34.78 Christ being holy, 00:47:34.82\00:47:36.69 He is perfected, He is perfect because He is sinless. 00:47:36.72\00:47:40.46 Luke 4:33-34. 00:47:40.49\00:47:43.49 Notice what the Bible says, 00:47:43.53\00:47:45.06 "Now in the synagogue, there was a man 00:47:45.09\00:47:47.16 who had a spirit of an unclean demon 00:47:47.20\00:47:49.56 and he cried out with a loud voice, 00:47:49.60\00:47:50.93 saying, 'Let us alone, what have we to do with You, 00:47:50.97\00:47:53.90 Jesus of Nazareth? 00:47:53.94\00:47:55.27 Did You come to destroy us? 00:47:55.30\00:47:56.97 I know who You are, the Holy One of God.'" 00:47:57.01\00:48:00.14 Even demons knew that Jesus was holy 00:48:00.18\00:48:03.81 and, of course, because He was sinless. 00:48:03.85\00:48:05.68 The lesson brings out Jesus was holy. 00:48:05.71\00:48:07.88 This means that Jesus was without fault 00:48:07.92\00:48:09.72 in relationship to God. 00:48:09.75\00:48:12.15 Of course, we see that in Hebrews 10:18, 00:48:12.19\00:48:14.19 Hebrews 4:15, as well as Hebrews 5:7-8. 00:48:14.22\00:48:18.29 The old Greek translation of the Old Testament 00:48:18.33\00:48:20.70 used the same Greek term 00:48:20.73\00:48:22.63 to designate those who maintain their covenant relationship 00:48:22.66\00:48:26.70 with God and with us. 00:48:26.74\00:48:29.07 You know what and I even like to just apply here, 00:48:29.10\00:48:30.97 just a lesson for us. 00:48:31.01\00:48:32.34 You know, we are also called as 1 Peter 1:16, tells us, 00:48:32.37\00:48:35.91 "We are also called to be holy as He is holy." 00:48:35.94\00:48:39.35 But, of course, Christ is the ultimate holy 00:48:39.38\00:48:42.52 because He is sinless 00:48:42.55\00:48:43.92 as this lesson is bringing out. 00:48:43.95\00:48:45.95 The second part of this scripture that Christ, 00:48:45.99\00:48:48.69 just thinking of the characteristics of Christ, 00:48:48.72\00:48:50.69 Christ is harmless. 00:48:50.73\00:48:52.43 Jesus is harmless. 00:48:52.46\00:48:53.80 What does it mean that He is harmless? 00:48:53.83\00:48:55.46 I looked at the original Greek word here, 00:48:55.50\00:48:57.27 it's the word akakos 00:48:57.30\00:48:58.63 which means simple and innocent. 00:48:58.67\00:49:03.57 In other words, you know, how many of you have ever ran 00:49:03.61\00:49:07.18 scared like a little school girl 00:49:07.21\00:49:08.64 for your life 00:49:08.68\00:49:10.01 from a little baby pet lamb, right? 00:49:10.05\00:49:11.58 Christ is often described as the Lamb of God, 00:49:11.61\00:49:14.02 a harmless, you look at a lamb and it's harmless, right? 00:49:14.05\00:49:16.62 It's innocent. 00:49:16.65\00:49:17.99 It's simple in this case and, of course, we see that 00:49:18.02\00:49:20.39 Christ is likened into the Lamb of God 00:49:20.42\00:49:22.06 all throughout the Book of Revelation. 00:49:22.09\00:49:23.63 And you heard me say, baby pet lamb 00:49:23.66\00:49:25.13 because the word arnion, 00:49:25.16\00:49:26.59 literally in the Greek, 00:49:26.63\00:49:28.06 which is how Christ is expressed 00:49:28.10\00:49:29.83 all throughout the Book of Revelation 00:49:29.86\00:49:31.20 is a little baby pet lamb, 00:49:31.23\00:49:32.60 a lamb of the first year, harmless, innocent. 00:49:32.63\00:49:36.27 And when we read that great love chapter, 00:49:36.30\00:49:38.67 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, 00:49:38.71\00:49:40.11 as I was preparing for this lesson, 00:49:40.14\00:49:41.48 this is what kept pouring through my mind 00:49:41.51\00:49:43.01 He is harmless because God is love 00:49:43.04\00:49:46.38 and as we have learned in this series so far, 00:49:46.41\00:49:49.38 God is love. 00:49:49.42\00:49:50.75 Christ is God which makes Him love. 00:49:50.79\00:49:52.89 And what is 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 tell us? 00:49:52.92\00:49:56.29 Love suffers long and is kind. 00:49:56.32\00:49:57.76 You can just insert Christ name right there 00:49:57.79\00:50:00.03 because He is love. 00:50:00.06\00:50:01.40 Christ suffers long and kind. 00:50:01.43\00:50:03.33 Christ does not envy. 00:50:03.37\00:50:04.83 Christ does not parade Himself. 00:50:04.87\00:50:06.97 He is not puffed up. He does not behave rudely. 00:50:07.00\00:50:09.30 He does not seek His own. 00:50:09.34\00:50:10.67 He does not, He is not provoked, 00:50:10.71\00:50:12.11 thinks no evil, does not rejoice in iniquity 00:50:12.14\00:50:14.74 but rejoices in truth, 00:50:14.78\00:50:16.81 bears all things, believes all things, 00:50:16.85\00:50:19.15 hopes all things, 00:50:19.18\00:50:20.52 endures all things, He is harmless. 00:50:20.55\00:50:23.82 Christ also, as point number three here, 00:50:23.85\00:50:26.55 Jesus is undefiled. 00:50:26.59\00:50:28.99 This is crucial, 00:50:29.02\00:50:30.36 because He could not be our High Priest 00:50:30.39\00:50:32.13 if He was not sinless and undefiled. 00:50:32.16\00:50:34.76 Hebrews 2:18, alludes to this. 00:50:34.80\00:50:37.97 "For in that He Himself has suffered, been tempted, 00:50:38.00\00:50:42.30 He is able to aid those who are tempted." 00:50:42.34\00:50:45.84 Christ couldn't aid us who are tempted 00:50:45.87\00:50:48.11 unless He had first been tempted 00:50:48.14\00:50:49.54 and passed the test. 00:50:49.58\00:50:50.91 He was undefiled, He had no sin. 00:50:50.95\00:50:53.92 And, of course, even Leviticus 1:3-10, 00:50:53.95\00:50:57.35 alludes to the fact that Christ, 00:50:57.39\00:50:58.92 of course, being the anti-type, 00:50:58.95\00:51:00.56 that lamb every time it was slain 00:51:00.59\00:51:02.49 in the sacrificial scene there, 00:51:02.52\00:51:04.73 we see that it had to be not 00:51:04.76\00:51:06.09 just any old kind of lamb or goat, 00:51:06.13\00:51:08.03 but it had to be a lamb or goat 00:51:08.06\00:51:09.56 that was without spot without blemish, 00:51:09.60\00:51:12.33 of course, pointing forward to Jesus Christ 00:51:12.37\00:51:14.70 who as the Lamb of God, 00:51:14.74\00:51:16.07 who would be led to the slaughter 00:51:16.10\00:51:17.44 would be without spot and blemish. 00:51:17.47\00:51:18.81 We read this in Leviticus 1:3 and 10. 00:51:18.84\00:51:21.98 And it says, "If his offering 00:51:22.01\00:51:23.75 is a burnt sacrifice of the Lord, 00:51:23.78\00:51:25.48 let him offer a male without blemish. 00:51:25.51\00:51:28.15 He shall offer it of his own free will, 00:51:28.18\00:51:30.79 at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord." 00:51:30.82\00:51:33.59 And then verse 10, 00:51:33.62\00:51:34.96 "If his offering is of the flocks, 00:51:34.99\00:51:36.42 of the sheep or of the goats as a burnt sacrifice, 00:51:36.46\00:51:38.69 he shall bring a male without blemish." 00:51:38.73\00:51:41.46 Jesus, of course, His, Jesus' perfect obedience 00:51:41.50\00:51:45.40 during His earthly life made it possible 00:51:45.43\00:51:47.97 for Him to offer Himself 00:51:48.00\00:51:49.97 as an acceptable sacrifice to God 00:51:50.01\00:51:52.67 without spot and without blemish indeed. 00:51:52.71\00:51:55.44 Hebrews Chapter 9, 00:51:55.48\00:51:56.81 of course, verses 14 and 15 00:51:56.85\00:51:58.28 also alludes to this because it says, 00:51:58.31\00:51:59.81 "How much more shall the blood of Christ..." 00:51:59.85\00:52:02.05 We read this earlier. 00:52:02.08\00:52:03.42 "How much more shall the blood of Christ 00:52:03.45\00:52:04.79 who through the eternal Spirit 00:52:04.82\00:52:06.15 offered Himself without spot to God, 00:52:06.19\00:52:09.26 cleanse your conscience from the dead works 00:52:09.29\00:52:11.53 to serve the living God?" 00:52:11.56\00:52:13.73 We'll just stop there right now, 00:52:13.76\00:52:15.10 you can read verse 15, 00:52:15.13\00:52:16.46 because I'm running out of time here, 00:52:16.50\00:52:17.83 I have a lot to talk about. 00:52:17.87\00:52:19.20 Let's go to our fourth point here, which is crucial. 00:52:19.23\00:52:20.87 Christ was separate from sinners. 00:52:20.90\00:52:24.44 He was separate from sinners. 00:52:24.47\00:52:26.34 The lesson brings out 00:52:26.37\00:52:27.71 that Jesus was separated from sinners 00:52:27.74\00:52:31.05 when He ascended to heaven. 00:52:31.08\00:52:33.05 The Greek verb tense suggests that 00:52:33.08\00:52:34.55 this is a present state for Jesus 00:52:34.58\00:52:36.69 which began at a specific point in time. 00:52:36.72\00:52:39.59 Jesus endured hostility from the sinners 00:52:39.62\00:52:42.26 during His earthly life, 00:52:42.29\00:52:43.63 but He was victorious. 00:52:43.66\00:52:45.23 And when then He seated, 00:52:45.26\00:52:46.80 when He was seated at the right hand of God, 00:52:46.83\00:52:48.53 of course, being separated from sinners. 00:52:48.56\00:52:50.40 But then it goes on to say, 00:52:50.43\00:52:51.77 Jesus is also and this is a little different, 00:52:51.80\00:52:54.00 separate from sinners 00:52:54.04\00:52:56.20 and that He was perfectly sinless. 00:52:56.24\00:53:00.01 Perfectly sinless. 00:53:00.04\00:53:01.64 So He was separated from sinners in the sense 00:53:01.68\00:53:03.81 that He's now at the right hand of God, 00:53:03.85\00:53:05.45 but yet we also know that He was separate from sinners. 00:53:05.48\00:53:08.42 Aren't we called to be that as well? 00:53:08.45\00:53:09.88 While we are sinners, we are to separate ourselves 00:53:09.92\00:53:12.55 from the sinful world, 00:53:12.59\00:53:13.92 as also did Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:53:13.96\00:53:16.19 The fifth point, very important here, 00:53:16.22\00:53:18.56 Jesus is higher than the heavens. 00:53:18.59\00:53:21.13 This is an identity, of course, of His divine character, 00:53:21.16\00:53:24.10 of who He is, His divine identity 00:53:24.13\00:53:26.43 in the Godhead. 00:53:26.47\00:53:27.80 In fact, Jesus is one with God the Father. 00:53:27.84\00:53:30.47 And we see this message coming from Psalm 57:5-11. 00:53:30.51\00:53:34.68 There's some other texts as well. 00:53:34.71\00:53:36.08 But Psalm 57:5-11, it says, "Be exalted, O God, 00:53:36.11\00:53:40.35 above the heavens, 00:53:40.38\00:53:41.72 let Your glory be above all the earth. 00:53:41.75\00:53:44.69 Jesus is higher than the heavens. 00:53:44.72\00:53:47.42 Of course, He would not be able to be our High Priest 00:53:47.46\00:53:49.32 if He was not, right? 00:53:49.36\00:53:50.69 Because He is one with God, He is sinless. 00:53:50.73\00:53:52.79 I think that this last quotation here 00:53:52.83\00:53:54.70 from Desire of Ages, 00:53:54.73\00:53:56.06 page 25 and 26 would really sum all of this up really great. 00:53:56.10\00:53:59.10 In fact, it would probably sum up the entire lesson. 00:53:59.13\00:54:01.87 It says, "It was Satan's purpose to bring about 00:54:01.90\00:54:03.91 an eternal separation between God and man. 00:54:03.94\00:54:07.54 But in Christ, we become more closely united to God 00:54:07.58\00:54:10.55 than if we had never fallen. 00:54:10.58\00:54:12.61 And taken our nature, 00:54:12.65\00:54:14.15 the Savior had bound Himself to humanity 00:54:14.18\00:54:16.65 by a tie that is never to be broken. 00:54:16.69\00:54:19.85 This is the pledge that God will fulfill His Word. 00:54:19.89\00:54:23.06 "Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given 00:54:23.09\00:54:26.43 and the government shall be upon His shoulder." 00:54:26.46\00:54:29.26 God has adopted human nature in the person of His Son 00:54:29.30\00:54:33.37 and has carried the same into the highest heaven. 00:54:33.40\00:54:36.00 It is the Son of man who shares the throne of the universe. 00:54:36.04\00:54:38.91 "It is the Son of man whose name 00:54:38.94\00:54:40.71 shall be called Wonderful, 00:54:40.74\00:54:42.18 Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, 00:54:42.21\00:54:45.18 The Prince of Peace," as we see in Isaiah 9:6. 00:54:45.21\00:54:48.25 The I Am is the Daysman between God and humanity, 00:54:48.28\00:54:51.79 laying His hand upon both He who is holy, 00:54:51.82\00:54:55.22 harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, 00:54:55.26\00:54:57.86 is not ashamed to call us brethren. 00:54:57.89\00:55:00.73 In Christ the family of earth and the family of heaven 00:55:00.76\00:55:03.43 are bound together. 00:55:03.47\00:55:04.80 Christ glorified is our brother. 00:55:04.83\00:55:07.47 Heaven is enshrined in humanity and humanity is enfolded 00:55:07.50\00:55:11.44 in the bosom of infinite love." 00:55:11.47\00:55:14.21 Isn't that wonderful? Amen. 00:55:14.24\00:55:15.58 Yeah. Isn't that wonderful? 00:55:15.61\00:55:16.95 We look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. 00:55:16.98\00:55:19.25 He is our High Priest. 00:55:19.28\00:55:21.25 He is perfect. He is sinless. 00:55:21.28\00:55:24.22 And, my friends, Spirit of Prophecy 00:55:24.25\00:55:25.69 makes it even clearer 00:55:25.72\00:55:27.06 that we also because of what Christ has done 00:55:27.09\00:55:28.92 can live without sin, 00:55:28.96\00:55:30.43 but that's only possible because of the perfect One, 00:55:30.46\00:55:33.50 Jesus Christ. 00:55:33.53\00:55:34.86 Amen. Thank you, Ryan. 00:55:34.90\00:55:36.23 Thank you, Jill. Thank you, John. 00:55:36.26\00:55:37.60 Thank you, Shelley. Everything just clicks. 00:55:37.63\00:55:39.60 You know what I mean? 00:55:39.63\00:55:40.97 We've got a few minutes left 00:55:41.00\00:55:42.34 and we're just going to have some closing thoughts. 00:55:42.37\00:55:44.07 Shelley? 00:55:44.11\00:55:45.71 Hebrews 7:22 just keeps screaming at me 00:55:45.74\00:55:49.41 because Hebrews 7:22, 00:55:49.44\00:55:51.68 Jesus is not just our Redeemer, 00:55:51.71\00:55:53.72 our Savior, our High Priest and our brother. 00:55:53.75\00:55:56.89 Hebrews 7:22 says, He is the guarantor, 00:55:56.92\00:56:00.92 the surety of the New Covenant. 00:56:00.96\00:56:03.22 He's God's assurance from God to us, 00:56:03.26\00:56:07.43 that all of His promises are yes 00:56:07.46\00:56:09.30 and amen in Christ Jesus. 00:56:09.33\00:56:10.80 He's assurance from us to God that He's working 00:56:10.83\00:56:13.37 and it's to will and to do God's good pleasure. 00:56:13.40\00:56:15.64 Yes and, Shelley, I wanna build off of that, 00:56:15.67\00:56:17.31 He's working so effectively and as an effective priest, 00:56:17.34\00:56:20.91 that while we are being sanctified, 00:56:20.94\00:56:22.94 listen to what Hebrews says 00:56:22.98\00:56:24.58 about while we're being sanctified, 00:56:24.61\00:56:27.12 Hebrews 10:14, "For by one offering, 00:56:27.15\00:56:30.32 He has perfected forever." 00:56:30.35\00:56:32.45 Hallelujah. 00:56:32.49\00:56:34.19 Those who are being sanctified, fear not your walk with Christ, 00:56:34.22\00:56:37.29 His perfection can cover any sin you bring to Him. 00:56:37.33\00:56:41.23 Hallelujah. 00:56:41.26\00:56:42.60 And as He's building you 00:56:42.63\00:56:43.97 and getting you ready for eternity, 00:56:44.00\00:56:45.33 His efficacy, His righteousness has perfected us forever, 00:56:45.37\00:56:49.94 while we are being sanctified. 00:56:49.97\00:56:52.04 Amen. Amen. 00:56:52.07\00:56:53.54 I'm just amazed as I think of the depths 00:56:53.58\00:56:56.54 that Jesus went to, to save us. 00:56:56.58\00:56:59.01 Just as we sitting on the panel here, 00:56:59.05\00:57:00.82 I just remind it again, 00:57:00.85\00:57:02.28 that plan of salvation is incredible. 00:57:02.32\00:57:04.25 And God put it in place 00:57:04.29\00:57:06.12 from the foundation of the world 00:57:06.15\00:57:08.06 because He loves us, 00:57:08.09\00:57:09.42 because He wants you in the kingdom. 00:57:09.46\00:57:11.43 Amen. 00:57:11.46\00:57:12.79 I referenced this earlier, the Upward Look, page 303. 00:57:12.83\00:57:15.80 It says, "Christ took humanity 00:57:15.83\00:57:17.23 and bore the hatred of the world, 00:57:17.27\00:57:19.17 that He might show men and women 00:57:19.20\00:57:20.84 that they too could live without sin." 00:57:20.87\00:57:23.71 You know, Philippians 4:13, 00:57:23.74\00:57:25.34 "I can do all things through Christ 00:57:25.37\00:57:27.61 who strengthens me." 00:57:27.64\00:57:28.98 My friends, we have a perfect sinless Savior, 00:57:29.01\00:57:30.75 who is our High Priest. 00:57:30.78\00:57:32.11 Look unto Him today for salvation. 00:57:32.15\00:57:34.42 Amen. 00:57:34.45\00:57:35.98 The message in these last days 00:57:36.02\00:57:38.55 is the message in the Book of Hebrews. 00:57:38.59\00:57:41.99 And if you have been blessed, 00:57:42.02\00:57:43.66 we want to encourage you to continue to join us 00:57:43.69\00:57:47.06 for this Sabbath School quarter. 00:57:47.10\00:57:48.80 You are vital to God's heart. 00:57:48.83\00:57:51.43 He loves you, He's given everything for you 00:57:51.47\00:57:53.54 and He wants you to be in His kingdom. 00:57:53.57\00:57:55.07 So please take this opportunity to get to know Jesus 00:57:55.10\00:57:59.37 as your faithful High Priest. 00:57:59.41\00:58:00.74 Amen. 00:58:00.78\00:58:02.11 Our next week's lesson is Jesus, the Anchor of the Soul. 00:58:02.14\00:58:04.35
