Amen. 00:03:05.11\00:03:06.45 Amen. Amen. Thank you. 00:03:06.48\00:03:08.15 Well, I have the first study, and it is Jesus, 00:03:08.18\00:03:12.52 Our Faithful Brother. 00:03:12.55\00:03:13.99 So we're going to break this down. 00:03:14.02\00:03:15.92 But I just want to say this, think about it. 00:03:15.96\00:03:19.13 I praise God every night for this, 00:03:19.16\00:03:21.13 how our creator God stepped out of heaven, 00:03:21.16\00:03:24.17 took on flesh to become our substitute sacrifice 00:03:24.20\00:03:28.97 to become our Savior, our Redeemer, 00:03:29.00\00:03:31.84 but He's also our faithful brother. 00:03:31.87\00:03:35.08 Our text for this lesson 00:03:35.11\00:03:37.35 is Hebrews 2:14. 00:03:37.38\00:03:41.52 "Inasmuch then as the children 00:03:41.55\00:03:43.28 have partaken of flesh and blood, 00:03:43.32\00:03:45.85 He Himself likewise shared in the same, 00:03:45.89\00:03:49.86 He was incarnated in the flesh, that through death, 00:03:49.89\00:03:53.90 He might destroy him who had the power of death, 00:03:53.93\00:03:57.80 that is, the devil." 00:03:57.83\00:03:59.90 In Hebrews 1, 00:03:59.93\00:04:01.27 it speaks of Jesus in the covenant term, 00:04:01.30\00:04:05.21 Son of God, 00:04:05.24\00:04:07.08 describes Him as ruler over the angels 00:04:07.11\00:04:10.75 and the brightness of God's glory, 00:04:10.78\00:04:12.95 and the express image of His being. 00:04:12.98\00:04:16.25 That's Hebrews 1:3. 00:04:16.28\00:04:18.02 Hebrews 2 speaks of Jesus in the covenant term, 00:04:18.05\00:04:21.59 Son of man, 00:04:21.62\00:04:22.96 and it describes Him 00:04:22.99\00:04:24.33 being made lower than the angels, 00:04:24.36\00:04:27.00 taking on our human flesh, 00:04:27.03\00:04:30.00 and that He was for the suffering of death 00:04:30.03\00:04:33.10 crowned with glory and honor, 00:04:33.13\00:04:36.10 that He by the grace of God 00:04:36.14\00:04:38.61 might taste death for everyone. 00:04:38.64\00:04:42.34 That's Hebrews 2:5-9. 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.61 If you go back to Hebrews 1, God says about Jesus, 00:04:44.65\00:04:49.55 You are My Son, today, I have begotten You. 00:04:49.58\00:04:54.59 Boy, that has special covenant significance 00:04:54.62\00:04:58.79 because that day 00:04:58.83\00:05:00.23 God chose the person of Jesus Christ 00:05:00.26\00:05:03.43 to be His covenant Son. 00:05:03.47\00:05:05.03 Hebrews 2 says, refers to Jesus 00:05:05.07\00:05:08.70 and the human children as brethren. 00:05:08.74\00:05:12.37 I think that's so exciting to think of Him as our brother. 00:05:12.41\00:05:16.38 Hebrews 1, the father declares 00:05:16.41\00:05:19.65 the divine sovereignty of Jesus. 00:05:19.68\00:05:23.72 In Hebrews 2, 00:05:23.75\00:05:25.75 the Son affirms His faithfulness to the Father. 00:05:25.79\00:05:29.96 Hebrews 1, Jesus is our Divine Lord, 00:05:29.99\00:05:32.99 our Creator, our Sustainer and Sovereign. 00:05:33.03\00:05:36.26 And Hebrews 2, He is a merciful, 00:05:36.30\00:05:40.34 high human priest. 00:05:40.37\00:05:42.57 And, in summary, the whole description of Jesus, 00:05:42.60\00:05:47.48 you know, to me, 00:05:47.51\00:05:48.84 there's no book that lifts up Jesus 00:05:48.88\00:05:51.38 more than Hebrews. 00:05:51.41\00:05:53.95 And Jesus said, 00:05:53.98\00:05:55.88 "I, if I be lifted up will draw all to Myself." 00:05:55.92\00:06:00.02 But the description of Jesus as our faithful 00:06:00.06\00:06:04.03 and merciful brother 00:06:04.06\00:06:06.56 is just the ultimate manifestation 00:06:06.59\00:06:10.20 of our eternal God. 00:06:10.23\00:06:11.57 So let's look at Sunday's lesson, 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.67 The Brother as a Redeemer. 00:06:13.70\00:06:16.64 To redeem means to ransom, 00:06:16.67\00:06:19.47 to pay the price to secure the release of someone 00:06:19.51\00:06:24.65 from something. 00:06:24.68\00:06:26.75 Matthew 20:28, Jesus said, 00:06:26.78\00:06:29.08 "The Son of Man did not come to be served, 00:06:29.12\00:06:32.59 but to serve, 00:06:32.62\00:06:34.26 and to give His life 00:06:34.29\00:06:36.69 as a ransom for many." 00:06:36.73\00:06:42.10 God became a man to die for us, 00:06:42.13\00:06:47.07 to ransom us, to pay the price. 00:06:47.10\00:06:49.77 Under the sacrificial system of the Old Covenant, 00:06:49.80\00:06:53.11 the Israelites were constantly reminded 00:06:53.14\00:06:58.38 of God's justice. 00:06:58.41\00:07:00.85 God had set a penalty for sin, and that sin, 00:07:00.88\00:07:05.39 the penalty was death. 00:07:05.42\00:07:08.26 But this death was to satisfy God's justice. 00:07:08.29\00:07:13.60 He has a system of administration 00:07:13.63\00:07:17.30 for His kingdom. 00:07:17.33\00:07:18.83 And He's a just God, but He's also a merciful God. 00:07:18.87\00:07:23.64 But don't ever you know, 00:07:23.67\00:07:25.27 I talk so much about the love and the mercy of God, 00:07:25.31\00:07:29.48 we must always remember, 00:07:29.51\00:07:32.01 He has wrath against sin. 00:07:32.05\00:07:35.15 So from the very beginning, when He created the penalty, 00:07:35.18\00:07:38.95 He planned to pay the penalty Himself, 00:07:38.99\00:07:42.42 and to become a man and offer Himself 00:07:42.46\00:07:46.09 as our substitute sacrifice. 00:07:46.13\00:07:48.53 So the whole Old Covenant system 00:07:48.56\00:07:52.30 pointed to the substitutionary sacrifice 00:07:52.33\00:07:57.21 of Jesus Christ, 00:07:57.24\00:07:59.61 God in the flesh, as our substitute. 00:07:59.64\00:08:03.38 But there's something else in the Old Covenant, 00:08:03.41\00:08:06.58 which is the Law of Moses. 00:08:06.61\00:08:09.65 What you find in the Old Covenant system 00:08:09.68\00:08:12.65 is something else that pointed to Jesus 00:08:12.69\00:08:16.16 as our Redeemer. 00:08:16.19\00:08:17.99 And you will probably remember that in the Old Covenant 00:08:18.03\00:08:22.76 the year of Jubilee every 50 years, 00:08:22.80\00:08:25.57 all slaves and captives were set free, 00:08:25.60\00:08:28.67 all debts were remitted, 00:08:28.70\00:08:30.71 and the land that was lost due to poverty 00:08:30.74\00:08:33.91 came back to the original owners. 00:08:33.94\00:08:36.21 But I'm going to tell you something, 00:08:36.24\00:08:37.58 50 years is a long wait, long time to wait. 00:08:37.61\00:08:41.78 So the Law of Moses 00:08:41.82\00:08:44.09 also provided a system 00:08:44.12\00:08:48.32 for a kinsman-redeemer, 00:08:48.36\00:08:51.56 the one that was close in kin, 00:08:51.59\00:08:55.23 a blood relative could pay the ransom price 00:08:55.26\00:08:59.97 to buy their relative out of bondage, 00:09:00.00\00:09:03.81 or to buy back their estate. 00:09:03.84\00:09:06.88 They redeemed, 00:09:06.91\00:09:08.34 the kinsman-redeemer would often 00:09:08.38\00:09:10.75 marry the widow and we think of Ruth and Boaz, 00:09:10.78\00:09:14.82 where Boaz rescued Ruth 00:09:14.85\00:09:19.25 from poverty and widowhood. 00:09:19.29\00:09:22.36 Now, the concept of the kinsman-redeemer 00:09:22.39\00:09:25.19 helps us understand Jesus. 00:09:25.23\00:09:28.50 This is the reason God became a man 00:09:28.53\00:09:31.30 so that He can be kin to us, 00:09:31.33\00:09:33.77 experience everything. 00:09:33.80\00:09:35.37 Hebrews 2:14-15 says, 00:09:35.40\00:09:37.64 "Inasmuch then as the children have partaken 00:09:37.67\00:09:39.74 of the flesh and blood, 00:09:39.77\00:09:41.18 He Himself likewise shared in the same, 00:09:41.21\00:09:43.51 that through death He might destroy him 00:09:43.55\00:09:46.58 who had the power of death, 00:09:46.61\00:09:48.28 that is, the devil, 00:09:48.32\00:09:50.19 and release those who through fear of death 00:09:50.22\00:09:54.89 were all their lifetime subject to bondage." 00:09:54.92\00:09:59.59 Do you realize, 00:09:59.63\00:10:00.96 the first Adam is called the son of God. 00:10:01.00\00:10:04.33 Adam who was created in the Garden of Eden, 00:10:04.37\00:10:07.17 he failed God, 00:10:07.20\00:10:09.10 he actually rejected God's way and he sinned. 00:10:09.14\00:10:14.18 But then we're all kin to him. 00:10:14.21\00:10:17.08 And so the Bible says, "All have sinned." 00:10:17.11\00:10:20.35 And if we had to pay our own wages for sin, 00:10:20.38\00:10:25.89 which is death, we'd be hopeless, 00:10:25.92\00:10:28.66 because the only way we'd be eternally dead, 00:10:28.69\00:10:32.89 but God came down. 00:10:32.93\00:10:34.73 In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul calls Him the last Adam. 00:10:34.76\00:10:38.80 He's the new in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:10:38.83\00:10:42.37 He is the new representative of mankind, 00:10:42.40\00:10:47.14 and He became our kinsman-redeemer. 00:10:47.18\00:10:52.18 He calls us brothers and sisters, 00:10:52.21\00:10:55.08 and to demonstrate God's righteousness 00:10:55.12\00:10:58.85 as being just and the one who justifies, 00:10:58.89\00:11:04.16 He paid the price for us as our substitute. 00:11:04.19\00:11:08.76 But then He was resurrected, and He conquered death. 00:11:08.80\00:11:13.90 He rendered Satan's power of death, 00:11:13.94\00:11:16.87 null and void. 00:11:16.91\00:11:18.24 Romans 3:23-26 says, 00:11:18.27\00:11:21.84 "All have sinned, 00:11:21.88\00:11:23.31 and fallen short of the glory of God, 00:11:23.35\00:11:25.05 being justified, freely, get that, 00:11:25.08\00:11:29.38 justified freely by His grace through the redemption 00:11:29.42\00:11:34.89 that is in Christ Jesus." 00:11:34.92\00:11:36.29 Let me just say something. 00:11:36.32\00:11:37.99 It's justified freely, it doesn't cost us anything. 00:11:38.03\00:11:42.30 But it costs God a whole lot. 00:11:42.33\00:11:44.00 He had to condescend 00:11:44.03\00:11:48.37 to become one of us, 00:11:48.40\00:11:50.47 and then die a painful death on the cross. 00:11:50.51\00:11:53.94 So we're justified freely by His grace 00:11:53.98\00:11:56.64 through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 00:11:56.68\00:11:59.21 whom God sent forth as a propitiation 00:11:59.25\00:12:03.08 by His blood through faith, 00:12:03.12\00:12:04.99 to demonstrate His righteousness, 00:12:05.02\00:12:08.59 because in His forbearance, 00:12:08.62\00:12:10.76 God had passed over the sins 00:12:10.79\00:12:12.36 that were previously committed 00:12:12.39\00:12:14.53 to demonstrate at the present time, 00:12:14.56\00:12:16.97 His righteousness that He might be just, 00:12:17.00\00:12:20.84 and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 00:12:20.87\00:12:25.37 Romans 6:23 says, 00:12:25.41\00:12:27.81 "The wages of sin is death. 00:12:27.84\00:12:31.21 But the gift of God is eternal life 00:12:31.25\00:12:34.88 in Christ Jesus." 00:12:34.92\00:12:36.62 Satan was holding us 00:12:36.65\00:12:38.82 as prisoners of war in this great controversy, 00:12:38.85\00:12:43.73 but Christ paid the ransom price 00:12:43.76\00:12:47.23 for our release. 00:12:47.26\00:12:48.60 That's right. 00:12:48.63\00:12:50.03 He bought us back by His blood. 00:12:50.07\00:12:52.90 And one of my favorite scriptures, 00:12:52.93\00:12:55.24 1 Peter 1:18-20, 00:12:55.27\00:12:57.84 Peter writes, "Knowing that you were not redeemed 00:12:57.87\00:13:02.38 with corruptible things, 00:13:02.41\00:13:03.91 like silver or gold, 00:13:03.95\00:13:05.28 from your aimless conduct 00:13:05.31\00:13:06.92 received by tradition from your fathers, 00:13:06.95\00:13:09.95 but with the precious blood of Christ, 00:13:09.98\00:13:13.86 as a lamb without blemish and without spot. 00:13:13.89\00:13:18.93 He indeed was foreordained 00:13:18.96\00:13:23.63 before the foundation of the world, 00:13:23.67\00:13:27.54 but was manifested in these last days to you." 00:13:27.57\00:13:30.74 That's right. 00:13:30.77\00:13:32.11 Revelation 13:8 tells us what the everlasting gospel is, 00:13:32.14\00:13:37.01 the Lamb who was slain 00:13:37.05\00:13:40.05 before the foundation of the world. 00:13:40.08\00:13:42.38 This is what God's covenants are all about. 00:13:42.42\00:13:44.79 They all build one upon the other, 00:13:44.82\00:13:47.12 there are progressive unfolding, 00:13:47.16\00:13:50.39 and the Old Covenant, 00:13:50.43\00:13:52.09 everything about it pointed to Jesus. 00:13:52.13\00:13:55.43 God has always been our true Redeemer. 00:13:55.46\00:13:59.47 Let me read quickly to you Exodus 6:5-7, 00:13:59.50\00:14:04.21 God says, "I heard the groaning of the children of Israel 00:14:04.24\00:14:06.71 when the Egyptians kept them in bondage 00:14:06.74\00:14:09.04 that I have remembered My covenant." 00:14:09.08\00:14:11.25 He's talking about the covenant with Abraham. 00:14:11.28\00:14:16.05 And He says, "Therefore say to the children of Israel, 00:14:16.08\00:14:18.82 I am the Lord, I will bring you out 00:14:18.85\00:14:20.69 from under the burdens of the Egyptians, 00:14:20.72\00:14:22.39 I will rescue you from their bondage. 00:14:22.42\00:14:25.19 I will redeem you with an outstretched arm 00:14:25.23\00:14:29.50 and with great judgments, 00:14:29.53\00:14:30.87 I'll take you as My people, and I'll be your God, 00:14:30.90\00:14:33.57 then you shall know that I am the Lord your God, 00:14:33.60\00:14:37.61 who brings you out 00:14:37.64\00:14:39.01 from the burdens of the Egyptians." 00:14:39.04\00:14:41.71 He will still do that today. 00:14:41.74\00:14:43.48 Amen. Amen. 00:14:43.51\00:14:45.31 Thank you so much, Shelley. 00:14:45.35\00:14:46.75 I'm Ryan Day, and I have Monday's lesson. 00:14:46.78\00:14:49.55 And I just have to say 00:14:49.58\00:14:50.92 it is a powerful, beautiful thing 00:14:50.95\00:14:53.32 to know that we are a part of the family of God. 00:14:53.36\00:14:55.89 And that's what Monday's lesson is highlighting. 00:14:55.92\00:14:57.83 It's entitled Not Ashamed to Call Them Brethren. 00:14:57.86\00:15:01.76 And to kick this off, 00:15:01.80\00:15:03.13 I'm going to go directly to Hebrews Chapter 2. 00:15:03.16\00:15:05.33 And we're going to read verses 10 through 13. 00:15:05.37\00:15:08.40 Hebrews 2:10-13. 00:15:08.44\00:15:11.47 Notice what the Bible says. 00:15:11.51\00:15:13.78 It says, "For it was fitting for Him, 00:15:13.81\00:15:17.15 from whom are all things and by whom are all things, 00:15:17.18\00:15:21.38 in bringing many sons to glory, 00:15:21.42\00:15:23.72 to make the captain of their salvation 00:15:23.75\00:15:26.39 perfect through sufferings. 00:15:26.42\00:15:28.52 For both, notice this, 00:15:28.56\00:15:29.92 for both He who sanctifies 00:15:29.96\00:15:31.66 and those who are being sanctified 00:15:31.69\00:15:34.06 are all of one for which reason 00:15:34.10\00:15:37.37 He is not ashamed to call them brethren." 00:15:37.40\00:15:41.50 Hallelujah. 00:15:41.54\00:15:42.87 "Saying," this is verse 12, 00:15:42.90\00:15:44.24 "I will declare your name to my brethren, 00:15:44.27\00:15:46.71 in the midst of the assembly, 00:15:46.74\00:15:48.08 I will sing praise to You." 00:15:48.11\00:15:50.51 Verse 13, "And again: 00:15:50.55\00:15:51.98 'I will put My trust in Him.' 00:15:52.01\00:15:54.35 And again: 'Here am I and the children 00:15:54.38\00:15:57.69 whom God has given Me.'" 00:15:57.72\00:16:00.19 Not ashamed to call them brothers. 00:16:00.22\00:16:02.86 That's a beautiful thing to know that the Almighty, 00:16:02.89\00:16:05.96 here we are this little speck in this massive, 00:16:05.99\00:16:09.53 huge, never ending universe, it seems, 00:16:09.56\00:16:13.07 and of course, God finds us and He says, 00:16:13.10\00:16:15.87 "You are my brethren indeed." 00:16:15.90\00:16:18.24 Hebrew says that Jesus is not ashamed to call us 00:16:18.27\00:16:20.98 His brethren. 00:16:21.01\00:16:22.34 Despite being one with God, 00:16:22.38\00:16:24.01 Jesus embraces us as part of the family. 00:16:24.05\00:16:27.12 This solidarity though contrast it seems 00:16:27.15\00:16:29.68 with the public shaming 00:16:29.72\00:16:31.05 that the readers of Hebrews suffered 00:16:31.09\00:16:32.75 in their communities, 00:16:32.79\00:16:34.12 and we find this in Hebrews Chapter 10. 00:16:34.16\00:16:36.06 So let's go to Hebrews Chapter 10, 00:16:36.09\00:16:37.53 and read verses 32 and 33. 00:16:37.56\00:16:39.46 This comes at a cost 00:16:39.49\00:16:40.83 because when we are invited into the family of God, 00:16:40.86\00:16:42.96 we often have to go through some of the sufferings 00:16:43.00\00:16:46.00 and tribulation that also Christ did. 00:16:46.03\00:16:47.90 But Christ took the ultimate shame, 00:16:47.94\00:16:50.21 the ultimate suffering, 00:16:50.24\00:16:51.57 and He paid the penalty 00:16:51.61\00:16:52.94 that we might be one with Him in family. 00:16:52.97\00:16:55.58 Notice Hebrews 10:32-33. 00:16:55.61\00:16:58.95 It says, "But recall the former days 00:16:58.98\00:17:00.68 in which after you were illuminated, 00:17:00.72\00:17:02.75 that means were enlightened, 00:17:02.78\00:17:04.15 you endured a great struggle with sufferings, 00:17:04.19\00:17:07.59 partly while you were made a spectacle 00:17:07.62\00:17:10.93 both by reproaches and tribulations, 00:17:10.96\00:17:13.93 and partly while you became companions of those 00:17:13.96\00:17:17.63 who were so treated." 00:17:17.67\00:17:19.00 In other words, 00:17:19.03\00:17:20.37 when we go through these sufferings, 00:17:20.40\00:17:22.17 these tribulations, 00:17:22.20\00:17:23.54 we are obviously a part of the family of God. 00:17:23.57\00:17:25.81 We are being likened, 00:17:25.84\00:17:27.18 we are being drawn and connected to Christ 00:17:27.21\00:17:29.21 through those sufferings because Christ suffered for us. 00:17:29.24\00:17:32.28 And it shouldn't surprise us 00:17:32.31\00:17:33.65 because the Bible makes it very clear 00:17:33.68\00:17:35.02 that we shall suffer tribulation, 00:17:35.05\00:17:36.58 we shall suffer persecution for the namesake, 00:17:36.62\00:17:39.19 for the righteousness sake of Jesus Christ. 00:17:39.22\00:17:42.36 You know, the main lesson goes on 00:17:42.39\00:17:43.83 to highlight the fact that Moses exemplifies 00:17:43.86\00:17:46.93 what Jesus did for us when he also, 00:17:46.96\00:17:49.80 he was in the Grand Palace of Egypt 00:17:49.83\00:17:52.63 under Pharaoh's rule. 00:17:52.67\00:17:54.00 In fact, Mrs. White actually confirms this 00:17:54.04\00:17:55.84 in Patriarchs and Prophets, page 245. 00:17:55.87\00:17:58.34 Again, using Moses as an example. 00:17:58.37\00:18:00.51 Notice what she says here, Ellen G. White also says 00:18:00.54\00:18:02.74 that he was a favorite with the armies 00:18:02.78\00:18:05.88 of Egypt, right? 00:18:05.91\00:18:07.25 And that Pharaoh determined to make his adopted grandson, 00:18:07.28\00:18:10.39 his successor on the throne, 00:18:10.42\00:18:12.62 that Moses was actually set up 00:18:12.65\00:18:14.06 to become the next pharaoh of Egypt. 00:18:14.09\00:18:16.56 But yet it's very interesting Moses chose, 00:18:16.59\00:18:20.03 he chose to be reunited with his family, 00:18:20.06\00:18:22.43 he chose to go through the same sufferings 00:18:22.46\00:18:25.00 and be made like unto his brethren, 00:18:25.03\00:18:26.60 of which he was. 00:18:26.63\00:18:27.97 Notice what the Bible says here about us. 00:18:28.00\00:18:30.04 Actually, just go back to Hebrews Chapter 11. 00:18:30.07\00:18:31.87 Hebrews Chapter 11, 00:18:31.91\00:18:33.24 I had skipped through this for a moment here. 00:18:33.27\00:18:34.71 Hebrews 11:24-26 highlights this, 00:18:34.74\00:18:37.98 as Moses was connected 00:18:38.01\00:18:39.48 and been likened to his brethren, 00:18:39.51\00:18:40.92 he chose to step down from the palaces of Pharaoh, 00:18:40.95\00:18:44.02 and to be likened to his brethren. 00:18:44.05\00:18:45.39 He says, "By faith Moses, when he became of age, 00:18:45.42\00:18:48.72 refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, 00:18:48.76\00:18:51.49 choosing rather to suffer affliction." 00:18:51.53\00:18:53.90 Notice, "He chose rather to suffer affliction 00:18:53.93\00:18:56.63 with the people of God 00:18:56.67\00:18:58.00 than to enjoy the passing pleasure of sin, 00:18:58.03\00:19:01.00 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches 00:19:01.04\00:19:03.77 than the treasures in Egypt, 00:19:03.81\00:19:05.44 for he looked to the reward." 00:19:05.47\00:19:08.38 In other words, he would rather suffer with his people 00:19:08.41\00:19:11.15 than to be basically entrapped within the sins 00:19:11.18\00:19:14.78 of the palace of Pharaoh. 00:19:14.82\00:19:17.09 And so we go on to ask the question here, 00:19:17.12\00:19:19.42 what does that mean for us? 00:19:19.45\00:19:20.89 Moses is a type of Christ. 00:19:20.92\00:19:23.09 Moses, like Jesus, and of course, Jesus also, 00:19:23.12\00:19:26.16 He suffered for us that we might be redeemed, 00:19:26.19\00:19:29.40 that we also might be one with Him in family, 00:19:29.43\00:19:32.70 that we might be called His brethren. 00:19:32.73\00:19:34.77 But what does that mean for us? 00:19:34.80\00:19:36.14 That means we have to also be sure to humble ourselves, 00:19:36.17\00:19:39.97 we have to be sure to present ourselves before God 00:19:40.01\00:19:42.58 and sometimes that means having to suffer tribulation 00:19:42.61\00:19:45.81 or to go through the fiery trials 00:19:45.85\00:19:47.52 and to experience those things 00:19:47.55\00:19:49.02 that also Jesus or the apostles, 00:19:49.05\00:19:51.19 or many others had to experience. 00:19:51.22\00:19:52.89 Notice what Matthew Chapter 10, 00:19:52.92\00:19:54.26 this is Jesus speaking, Matthew 10:32-33. 00:19:54.29\00:19:58.36 These are those famous words that Jesus echoed 00:19:58.39\00:20:00.86 and He says here, "Therefore, 00:20:00.90\00:20:03.10 whoever confesses Me before men, 00:20:03.13\00:20:05.63 him I will also confess before My Father 00:20:05.67\00:20:08.07 who is in heaven. 00:20:08.10\00:20:10.07 But whoever denies Me before men, 00:20:10.11\00:20:12.41 him I will also deny before my Father 00:20:12.44\00:20:15.61 who is in heaven." 00:20:15.64\00:20:18.65 Another scripture we know that Christ says, 00:20:18.68\00:20:20.28 "If you love father or mother or son or daughter, 00:20:20.32\00:20:22.45 anyone more than you love Me, 00:20:22.48\00:20:24.05 then you are not worthy of Me." 00:20:24.09\00:20:25.42 Jesus is looking for a people 00:20:25.45\00:20:27.49 who are willing to lay down their life, 00:20:27.52\00:20:29.26 give their all for Him. 00:20:29.29\00:20:32.19 Of course, 2 Timothy Chapter 2, 00:20:32.23\00:20:34.83 excuse me, 2 Timothy 1:8-12 00:20:34.86\00:20:38.00 also brings about this message very clearly. 00:20:38.03\00:20:40.97 Again, 2 Timothy 1:8-12. 00:20:41.00\00:20:43.81 It says, "Therefore, do not be ashamed 00:20:43.84\00:20:45.87 of the testimony of our Lord, 00:20:45.91\00:20:47.41 nor of me, his prisoner, 00:20:47.44\00:20:49.31 but share with me 00:20:49.34\00:20:50.68 in the sufferings for the gospel 00:20:50.71\00:20:52.05 according to the power of God. 00:20:52.08\00:20:54.32 For this reason, I also suffer these things. 00:20:54.35\00:20:56.82 Nevertheless, I am not ashamed, for I know whom I believed, 00:20:56.85\00:21:01.52 and I'm persuaded that He is able to keep 00:21:01.56\00:21:04.19 what I have committed to him until that day." 00:21:04.23\00:21:07.36 Paul was a man of faith. 00:21:07.40\00:21:08.73 Paul, probably more than anyone suffered 00:21:08.76\00:21:10.80 for the name of Christ. 00:21:10.83\00:21:12.57 And that is what is being brought out here, 00:21:12.60\00:21:14.20 Hebrews 13, this is another passage, 00:21:14.24\00:21:16.20 just bringing this home 00:21:16.24\00:21:17.57 the fact that if we're going to be called 00:21:17.61\00:21:19.04 the brethren of God 00:21:19.07\00:21:20.54 that does require sometimes a sacrifice on our half, 00:21:20.58\00:21:23.31 and it sometimes brings tribulations 00:21:23.35\00:21:25.61 from the enemy. 00:21:25.65\00:21:26.98 And we, as we suffer through those like Christ, 00:21:27.02\00:21:29.45 we are being made into the family of God, 00:21:29.48\00:21:31.32 as Christ was united with His Father, 00:21:31.35\00:21:33.36 we are also united with Christ through those sufferings. 00:21:33.39\00:21:36.52 Notice Hebrews 13:12-15. 00:21:36.56\00:21:39.13 It says, "Therefore, 00:21:39.16\00:21:40.50 Jesus also that He might sanctify the people 00:21:40.53\00:21:42.80 with His own blood suffered outside the gate. 00:21:42.83\00:21:45.60 Therefore, let us go forth," notice, 00:21:45.63\00:21:47.27 "let us go forth to Him outside the camp, 00:21:47.30\00:21:50.47 bearing His reproach. 00:21:50.51\00:21:52.37 For here we have no continuing city, 00:21:52.41\00:21:54.74 but we seek the one to come." 00:21:54.78\00:21:57.51 Okay, we're looking unto that better city, 00:21:57.55\00:21:59.85 that holy city. 00:21:59.88\00:22:01.22 "Therefore, by Him, let us continually offer 00:22:01.25\00:22:03.79 the sacrifice of praise to God that is, 00:22:03.82\00:22:05.82 the fruit of our lips, 00:22:05.85\00:22:07.19 giving thanks to His name. 00:22:07.22\00:22:08.69 But do not forget to do good and to share 00:22:08.72\00:22:11.96 for what such sacrifices God is well pleased." 00:22:11.99\00:22:16.33 The lesson brings out 00:22:16.36\00:22:17.70 that this was part of the problem 00:22:17.73\00:22:19.07 of the readers of Hebrews. 00:22:19.10\00:22:20.44 After suffering persecution and rejection, 00:22:20.47\00:22:22.67 many of them begin to feel ashamed of Jesus 00:22:22.70\00:22:26.41 by their actions somewhere in danger 00:22:26.44\00:22:28.04 of putting Jesus to open shame 00:22:28.08\00:22:32.05 instead of honoring Him. 00:22:32.08\00:22:33.88 We read this in Hebrews 6:4. 00:22:33.92\00:22:36.79 I backed up, I want to take in verses 4 through 8, 00:22:36.82\00:22:39.29 rather than just verse 6, just to put it in context here. 00:22:39.32\00:22:41.92 Notice what this says. 00:22:41.96\00:22:43.29 This is one of those texts 00:22:43.32\00:22:44.66 that often people have a little bit of trouble with. 00:22:44.69\00:22:46.03 As they read it, they say, "What is this text saying?" 00:22:46.06\00:22:47.73 Hebrews 6:4-8, it says, 00:22:47.76\00:22:50.23 "For it is impossible for those 00:22:50.27\00:22:51.93 who were once enlightened 00:22:51.97\00:22:53.30 and have tasted the heavenly gift 00:22:53.34\00:22:54.74 and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 00:22:54.77\00:22:57.27 and have tasted the good word of God 00:22:57.31\00:22:59.34 and the powers of the age to come, 00:22:59.37\00:23:01.24 if they fall away 00:23:01.28\00:23:02.84 to renew them again to repentance, 00:23:02.88\00:23:05.08 since they crucify again for themselves, 00:23:05.11\00:23:08.08 the Son of God." 00:23:08.12\00:23:09.45 And notice here it is, "And put Him to an open shame." 00:23:09.48\00:23:12.05 This is talking about a people 00:23:12.09\00:23:13.52 who have tasted the goodness of God, 00:23:13.56\00:23:15.72 they have again, professed the name of God, 00:23:15.76\00:23:18.06 they want to accept His righteousness, 00:23:18.09\00:23:19.76 but yet they fall out of grace with God, 00:23:19.79\00:23:22.46 they fall into a life of sin, but not just a life of sin, 00:23:22.50\00:23:25.00 not one or two or three or four sins, 00:23:25.03\00:23:26.70 but they're living in a perpetual 00:23:26.74\00:23:29.04 continual state of sin. 00:23:29.07\00:23:30.61 The Bible is addressing this. 00:23:30.64\00:23:31.97 This is what this passage is addressing. 00:23:32.01\00:23:33.34 Verse 7, it goes on, "For the earth 00:23:33.38\00:23:34.91 which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, 00:23:34.94\00:23:37.51 and bears herbs useful 00:23:37.55\00:23:39.11 for those by whom it is cultivated, 00:23:39.15\00:23:41.32 receives blessing from God, 00:23:41.35\00:23:43.08 but if it bears thorns and briars, 00:23:43.12\00:23:45.82 it is rejected and near to being cursed, 00:23:45.85\00:23:48.46 whose end is to be burned." 00:23:48.49\00:23:50.79 We are not to put God to an open shame 00:23:50.83\00:23:53.26 we are to count it all joy, 00:23:53.29\00:23:55.43 as James says, 00:23:55.46\00:23:56.80 when we fall into various trials, 00:23:56.83\00:23:58.33 because we are not doing this 00:23:58.37\00:23:59.77 because it's God's plan for us to fall into these trials. 00:23:59.80\00:24:02.34 It's not God's fault that we find ourselves 00:24:02.37\00:24:05.04 in these tribulations and these struggles, 00:24:05.07\00:24:06.84 but rather the enemy is pressing against us. 00:24:06.88\00:24:09.84 And just because the enemy is pressing against us, 00:24:09.88\00:24:12.45 my friends, that does not mean 00:24:12.48\00:24:14.18 that necessarily we are out of favor with God, 00:24:14.22\00:24:16.48 but rather, we're doing something right, 00:24:16.52\00:24:17.99 more than likely because we're in favor with the Lord, 00:24:18.02\00:24:20.42 and we're suffering as Jesus suffers. 00:24:20.46\00:24:22.02 That's why Paul constantly recalls the readers 00:24:22.06\00:24:24.33 to hold fast to their confession 00:24:24.36\00:24:26.33 of their faith. 00:24:26.36\00:24:27.70 We see this in Hebrews 4:14, also in 10:23. 00:24:27.73\00:24:30.77 In fact, let's read Hebrews 4:14-16 right now. 00:24:30.80\00:24:33.84 It says, "Seeing then 00:24:33.87\00:24:35.20 that we have a great High Priest 00:24:35.24\00:24:36.57 who has passed through the heavens, 00:24:36.60\00:24:37.94 Jesus the Son of God, 00:24:37.97\00:24:39.31 let us hold fast our confession." 00:24:39.34\00:24:42.81 And then again, let's go down to Hebrews 10:23. 00:24:42.84\00:24:45.75 Again, Hebrews 10:23 echoes this. 00:24:45.78\00:24:48.02 "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope 00:24:48.05\00:24:50.32 without wavering, 00:24:50.35\00:24:51.69 for He who promised is faithful." 00:24:51.72\00:24:54.02 My friends, we may experience tribulation in this life, 00:24:54.06\00:24:56.62 but only because Jesus did for His namesake, 00:24:56.66\00:25:01.10 His righteousness sake we may have to go through that. 00:25:01.13\00:25:03.53 But we are not alone. 00:25:03.57\00:25:04.90 We are His brethren. 00:25:04.93\00:25:06.27 And Jesus will see His people through 00:25:06.30\00:25:08.20 if we hold fast the confession of our faith. 00:25:08.24\00:25:10.81 Hallelujah. Amen. 00:25:10.84\00:25:12.41 Well, we have to take a very quick break, 00:25:12.44\00:25:14.38 we'll be right back. 00:25:14.41\00:25:15.74 Stay with us. 00:25:15.78\00:25:17.11 Ever wish you could watch 00:25:21.45\00:25:22.78 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:25:22.82\00:25:24.92 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:25:24.95\00:25:28.12 Well, you can by visiting 3abnsabbathschoolpanel.com 00:25:28.16\00:25:33.13 A clean design makes it easy 00:25:33.16\00:25:35.60 to find the program you're looking for. 00:25:35.63\00:25:37.63 There are also links to the Adult Bible Study Guide 00:25:37.67\00:25:41.17 so you can follow along. 00:25:41.20\00:25:42.94 Sharing is easy. 00:25:42.97\00:25:44.31 Just click share 00:25:44.34\00:25:45.67 and choose your favorite social media. 00:25:45.71\00:25:47.44 Share a link, save a life for eternity. 00:25:47.48\00:25:51.81 Welcome back. 00:25:51.85\00:25:53.18 And now we're going to Pastor John Lomacang 00:25:53.21\00:25:54.95 who has Tuesday's lesson. 00:25:54.98\00:25:56.72 Yes, and mine is Flesh and Blood Like Us. 00:25:56.75\00:26:01.92 So far, we've talked about the Jesus, 00:26:01.96\00:26:07.10 our brother, the brotherhood, how, as Ryan pointed out, 00:26:07.13\00:26:12.27 He didn't consider it odd to be identified with us. 00:26:12.30\00:26:15.94 We have to pause 00:26:15.97\00:26:17.31 and just absorb that for a moment. 00:26:17.34\00:26:18.81 Because when you think about the God of the universe, 00:26:18.84\00:26:22.38 we say universe 00:26:22.41\00:26:23.75 and we could only have the only concept of universe 00:26:23.78\00:26:27.38 we can get is when we look up at the heavens at night, 00:26:27.42\00:26:29.55 or just stump through some astronomical book 00:26:29.58\00:26:32.49 that shows us all the constellations. 00:26:32.52\00:26:34.56 But I think that 00:26:34.59\00:26:35.92 when we are exposed to eternity, 00:26:35.96\00:26:38.09 only then will the overwhelming reality 00:26:38.13\00:26:40.46 of what Jesus did 00:26:40.50\00:26:42.20 really find its place in our hearts. 00:26:42.23\00:26:44.63 Well, let's consider that. 00:26:44.67\00:26:46.53 What the Bible writer talks about 00:26:46.57\00:26:47.90 flesh and blood for us. 00:26:47.94\00:26:49.34 You see, when you read the Hebrew story, 00:26:49.37\00:26:53.24 or even when you read the gospel, 00:26:53.27\00:26:54.68 you find out that Jesus adopted our human nature 00:26:54.71\00:26:59.55 so that He could represent us 00:26:59.58\00:27:02.15 and then impart to us His nature. 00:27:02.18\00:27:04.29 Amen. 00:27:04.32\00:27:06.32 You have to put yourself in the position to say, 00:27:06.35\00:27:08.52 "Well, why would someone who's perfect risk 00:27:08.56\00:27:13.96 becoming imperfect to save 00:27:14.00\00:27:18.30 those who are imperfect." 00:27:18.33\00:27:21.14 And that is something that the risk was enormous 00:27:21.17\00:27:24.91 for Jesus to step into time in humanity. 00:27:24.94\00:27:27.91 He stepped into time in humanity 00:27:27.94\00:27:29.41 without the guarantee of returning 00:27:29.44\00:27:31.45 to eternity and complete divinity, 00:27:31.48\00:27:34.85 He could have lost. 00:27:34.88\00:27:36.22 That's why the temptation for Him 00:27:36.25\00:27:37.59 was far greater than it is for us. 00:27:37.62\00:27:39.25 So when we hear that 00:27:39.29\00:27:40.62 He was tempted in all points like we are, 00:27:40.66\00:27:42.26 yet without sin, that's a huge praise the Lord. 00:27:42.29\00:27:44.89 But let's go ahead and look at Hebrews 00:27:44.93\00:27:46.26 and begin to unfold the flesh and blood ideology. 00:27:46.29\00:27:50.37 Hebrews 2:9, the Bible says, "But we see Jesus, 00:27:50.40\00:27:55.80 who was made a little lower than the angels 00:27:55.84\00:27:58.34 for the suffering of death, 00:27:58.37\00:28:00.81 crowned with glory and honor, 00:28:00.84\00:28:02.91 that He by the grace of God 00:28:02.94\00:28:05.35 might taste death for everyone." 00:28:05.38\00:28:08.42 Amen. 00:28:08.45\00:28:09.78 When I read that, I thought to myself, 00:28:09.82\00:28:11.95 I heard the story of this leader Castro, 00:28:11.99\00:28:16.49 Cuban leader. 00:28:16.52\00:28:18.19 He, whenever the food came to him, 00:28:18.23\00:28:20.23 he would have somebody else taste it... 00:28:20.26\00:28:22.43 That's right. Before he ate it, right? 00:28:22.46\00:28:23.93 That's right. 00:28:23.97\00:28:25.30 Because if they died, he wasn't going to eat it. 00:28:25.33\00:28:28.40 But look at this. 00:28:28.44\00:28:30.11 Jesus knew that the food 00:28:30.14\00:28:32.64 that we had to taste or the penalty 00:28:32.67\00:28:34.64 that we had to taste would result in death. 00:28:34.68\00:28:37.41 As a matter of fact, He knew that 00:28:37.45\00:28:38.78 Adam had already tasted death, 00:28:38.81\00:28:40.68 and had passed on death, Romans 5:12, 00:28:40.72\00:28:43.08 just as through one man's sin entered the world and death 00:28:43.12\00:28:45.92 through sin and thus, 00:28:45.95\00:28:47.36 death spread to all because all have sinned. 00:28:47.39\00:28:49.76 All didn't do something wrong. 00:28:49.79\00:28:51.16 We just inherited the nature that Adam imparted to us, 00:28:51.19\00:28:54.33 the sin nature that predisposed every one of us to death. 00:28:54.36\00:28:57.57 So Jesus stepped into this death nature 00:28:57.60\00:29:00.84 to free us from the death nature. 00:29:00.87\00:29:02.44 That's huge. It is. 00:29:02.47\00:29:03.81 Amen. 00:29:03.84\00:29:05.17 So let's look at what the Bible talks about, 00:29:05.21\00:29:06.54 when it talks about this carnal nature. 00:29:06.57\00:29:08.61 I'm going to go to Romans 7:14, 00:29:08.64\00:29:11.01 because our natural designation 00:29:11.05\00:29:12.78 is clearly defined in the Bible. 00:29:12.81\00:29:14.82 Our nature determines our destiny. 00:29:14.85\00:29:17.32 So with the nature that we had, 00:29:17.35\00:29:18.79 the Lord knew what we were destined to be, 00:29:18.82\00:29:21.39 or what our end would be, the wages of sin is death. 00:29:21.42\00:29:25.03 He knew that. 00:29:25.06\00:29:26.39 So to preempt what we were rightfully aiming 00:29:26.43\00:29:29.26 towards which we could not stop, 00:29:29.30\00:29:31.30 it's like going down a greased sliding board. 00:29:31.33\00:29:34.67 You can't go up a sliding board, 00:29:34.70\00:29:36.04 you can't reverse that. 00:29:36.07\00:29:37.41 Once nature was passed upon all humanity 00:29:37.44\00:29:39.81 that predisposed us to death, 00:29:39.84\00:29:42.08 there was no reversing of that in our own strength. 00:29:42.11\00:29:45.08 The Bible says in Romans 7:14 00:29:45.11\00:29:47.18 and Paul describes this in nature. 00:29:47.22\00:29:50.12 "For we know that the law is spiritual, 00:29:50.15\00:29:51.75 but I am carnal, sold under sin." 00:29:51.79\00:29:54.36 Now, I want to say something really significantly here, 00:29:54.39\00:29:57.33 even though Jesus had the sin nature, 00:29:57.36\00:29:59.79 He did not inherit the propensity. 00:29:59.83\00:30:03.60 Now, what's the difference between 00:30:03.63\00:30:04.97 the sin nature and propensity? 00:30:05.00\00:30:06.40 You know, as James brings this out, 00:30:06.43\00:30:08.44 not James Rafferty, 00:30:08.47\00:30:09.80 but James, the writer brings this out, 00:30:09.84\00:30:12.04 you know, the Bible says, 00:30:12.07\00:30:13.51 "Each one is tempted when he is drawn away 00:30:13.54\00:30:15.78 by his own desires and enticed." 00:30:15.81\00:30:18.91 Jesus did not have the desire in Him to sin. 00:30:18.95\00:30:21.38 Amen. 00:30:21.42\00:30:22.75 Because I want to make that very clear 00:30:22.78\00:30:24.12 if He had everything, 00:30:24.15\00:30:25.49 if He allowed that desire to come in Him, 00:30:25.52\00:30:28.09 then He couldn't say, 00:30:28.12\00:30:29.52 the prince of this world has come 00:30:29.56\00:30:31.09 and he has nothing in me. 00:30:31.13\00:30:34.20 We do have something in us, each one of us 00:30:34.23\00:30:36.63 has to overcome by the blood of the Lamb. 00:30:36.67\00:30:40.10 But we have to overcome the tendencies 00:30:40.14\00:30:42.24 that we have inherited, 00:30:42.27\00:30:43.74 and in some cases cultivated. 00:30:43.77\00:30:45.77 Jesus did not inherit any kind of, 00:30:45.81\00:30:47.94 well, I'm predisposed to alcohol, 00:30:47.98\00:30:49.31 predisposed to cigarette, 00:30:49.34\00:30:50.68 predisposed to my family is a family of crime. 00:30:50.71\00:30:53.05 He inherited, He received the sin nature, 00:30:53.08\00:30:56.75 because the nature was the issue. 00:30:56.79\00:30:58.89 The Lamb of God that taketh away 00:30:58.92\00:31:00.26 the sin of the world, 00:31:00.29\00:31:01.89 He shall save His people from their sins. 00:31:01.92\00:31:03.99 Sins are the things we do, 00:31:04.03\00:31:05.63 but the sin of the world is the broken nature 00:31:05.66\00:31:08.06 that the Lord came to get rid of. 00:31:08.10\00:31:09.73 Now, let's begin to look at that. 00:31:09.76\00:31:11.37 We talk about the flesh and blood aspects. 00:31:11.40\00:31:13.00 Look at Hebrews 2:14. 00:31:13.03\00:31:15.10 And it begins to describe what this flesh 00:31:15.14\00:31:17.01 and blood relationship is all about. 00:31:17.04\00:31:18.97 Hebrews 2:14, it says, "Inasmuch then, 00:31:19.01\00:31:22.21 as the children have partaken of flesh and blood," 00:31:22.24\00:31:25.31 that is the nature that Adam conveyed to them, 00:31:25.35\00:31:27.85 "He himself likewise shared in the same 00:31:27.88\00:31:31.35 He put on this human nature. 00:31:31.39\00:31:33.72 That, "here's the reason, "through death, 00:31:33.76\00:31:36.73 He might destroy him, 00:31:36.76\00:31:39.23 who had the power of death, that is, the devil." 00:31:39.26\00:31:43.33 So the purpose of putting on this frail nature is to say, 00:31:43.37\00:31:47.47 and this is a huge aspect. 00:31:47.50\00:31:49.24 Years ago, there was a man by the name of Flip Wilson, 00:31:49.27\00:31:51.14 some of you may have heard about him. 00:31:51.17\00:31:52.61 He said, "The devil made me do it." 00:31:52.64\00:31:54.31 Jesus said though that's no excuse for sin. 00:31:54.34\00:31:56.95 The devil can't make you do anything. 00:31:56.98\00:31:58.88 You sin when you're drawn away and enticed 00:31:58.91\00:32:01.32 by your own desires. 00:32:01.35\00:32:03.69 And then when you yield to it, 00:32:03.72\00:32:05.05 sin is conceived and the end result 00:32:05.09\00:32:06.62 of that is death. 00:32:06.65\00:32:07.99 But the Lord is in essence, saying, 00:32:08.02\00:32:09.36 "I stepped into the flesh 00:32:09.39\00:32:13.06 that Adam gave to his descendants. 00:32:13.09\00:32:15.10 I stepped into that very nature to show you that 00:32:15.13\00:32:17.53 being in that nature does not mean you have to sin. 00:32:17.57\00:32:21.77 See, temptation is not sin. 00:32:21.80\00:32:23.47 It is the yielding to temptation 00:32:23.51\00:32:25.01 and partaking of it is where the sin begins. 00:32:25.04\00:32:27.58 Right. 00:32:27.61\00:32:28.94 So let's look at 2 Corinthians 5:21. 00:32:28.98\00:32:31.48 The Bible continues to unfold 00:32:31.51\00:32:33.28 this flesh and blood understanding. 00:32:33.31\00:32:36.72 It says in 2 Corinthians 5:21, 00:32:36.75\00:32:39.22 "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, 00:32:39.25\00:32:44.63 that we might become 00:32:44.66\00:32:46.33 the righteousness of God in Him." 00:32:46.36\00:32:49.10 Notice, this is powerful. 00:32:49.13\00:32:50.63 I want to talk about the in Him. 00:32:50.67\00:32:52.43 He came in us 00:32:52.47\00:32:54.04 that we might one day be in Him. 00:32:54.07\00:32:55.90 Amen. 00:32:55.94\00:32:57.27 See, He stepped into us 00:32:57.31\00:32:58.67 that we could step into Him one day. 00:32:58.71\00:33:00.61 That's huge. 00:33:00.64\00:33:01.98 Think about it one day, 00:33:02.01\00:33:03.35 we are going to step into something 00:33:03.38\00:33:04.71 that we have never known, 00:33:04.75\00:33:06.08 sinlessness, perfection, 00:33:06.11\00:33:08.02 complete righteousness, immortality, 00:33:08.05\00:33:11.05 we're going to step into that one day. 00:33:11.09\00:33:12.62 Now, immortality has been brought to light 00:33:12.65\00:33:14.49 through the gospel. 00:33:14.52\00:33:15.86 But when we put that on, 00:33:15.89\00:33:17.23 we're going to say, "Wow, that feels good." 00:33:17.26\00:33:20.56 Oh, boy. 00:33:20.60\00:33:21.93 Now, I know this feeling is not the platform 00:33:21.96\00:33:24.33 of measuring things. 00:33:24.37\00:33:25.70 But I can guarantee you, 00:33:25.73\00:33:27.07 there's going to be a sensation that 00:33:27.10\00:33:28.94 I've never felt this way before. 00:33:28.97\00:33:31.44 In the very same way that 00:33:31.47\00:33:32.81 I'm sure that when Eve partook of that fruit, 00:33:32.84\00:33:35.88 there was a feeling that came over her 00:33:35.91\00:33:37.85 that she never experienced before. 00:33:37.88\00:33:39.95 And when Adam decided to acquiesce 00:33:39.98\00:33:41.48 to her suggestions, 00:33:41.52\00:33:42.85 I'm sure there's a feeling that came over him. 00:33:42.88\00:33:45.02 Wow, 00:33:45.05\00:33:46.39 that feels unusual. 00:33:46.42\00:33:47.76 That's why sin is so intoxicating, 00:33:47.79\00:33:51.66 because it appeals to the senses. 00:33:51.69\00:33:53.76 Yes. 00:33:53.80\00:33:55.13 God wants to not allow sin to control us 00:33:55.16\00:33:57.67 by appealing to the senses. 00:33:57.70\00:33:59.37 He wants to appeal to our intellect 00:33:59.40\00:34:01.50 so that the senses of sin do not 00:34:01.54\00:34:03.37 become overwhelming for us. 00:34:03.41\00:34:05.34 He was tempted in this, 00:34:05.37\00:34:06.71 He was tempted in the intellect of sin, 00:34:06.74\00:34:09.38 but never allowed the sense of sin 00:34:09.41\00:34:11.71 to persuade Him to partake of sin. 00:34:11.75\00:34:13.48 Amen. 00:34:13.52\00:34:14.85 So let's look at another passage. 00:34:14.88\00:34:16.38 1 Corinthians 15:50, He became sin for us, 00:34:16.42\00:34:19.75 that we might become the righteousness 00:34:19.79\00:34:21.12 of God in Him. 00:34:21.16\00:34:22.49 1 Corinthians 15:50, "Now this I say, brethren, 00:34:22.52\00:34:25.49 that flesh and blood 00:34:25.53\00:34:26.86 cannot inherit the kingdom of God, 00:34:26.90\00:34:28.23 nor does corruption inherit incorruption." 00:34:28.26\00:34:30.27 So Jesus stepped into, let's now grab the other part, 00:34:30.30\00:34:33.47 He stepped into a body that could be corrupted. 00:34:33.50\00:34:37.01 But the beautiful thing that the Bible says 00:34:37.04\00:34:38.67 is He was tempted in all points just as we are, 00:34:38.71\00:34:42.21 yet without sin. 00:34:42.24\00:34:43.58 He never allowed corruption to inhabit Him. 00:34:43.61\00:34:46.41 That's right. Amen. 00:34:46.45\00:34:48.12 He could have, he stepped into that body 00:34:48.15\00:34:50.25 that could be corruptible. 00:34:50.29\00:34:51.95 And so when you look about that, 00:34:51.99\00:34:53.39 when you look at that, 00:34:53.42\00:34:54.96 1 Corinthians 15:22, "As in Adam all die." 00:34:54.99\00:34:57.66 So the Lord when He stepped into that Adam nature, 00:34:57.69\00:34:59.73 He could have died. 00:34:59.76\00:35:01.10 That's why the devil came at Him in such a vehement way, 00:35:01.13\00:35:05.20 because he knew that if I could get Him to sin 00:35:05.23\00:35:08.80 in thought or in deed, He's mine. 00:35:08.84\00:35:14.01 That's right. 00:35:14.04\00:35:15.38 So James brings that out very carefully. 00:35:15.41\00:35:18.35 The sin starts here. Amen. 00:35:18.38\00:35:20.32 And then it's carried out here. 00:35:20.35\00:35:21.95 Praise God, we have a Savior, 00:35:21.98\00:35:24.05 who did not allow the sin to get here. 00:35:24.09\00:35:26.69 Amen. Amen. 00:35:26.72\00:35:28.06 So it never got here. 00:35:28.09\00:35:29.42 The prince of this world came to Him, 00:35:29.46\00:35:31.43 and He said, he has nothing in Me. 00:35:31.46\00:35:33.83 And so what's the beautiful thing 00:35:33.86\00:35:35.20 about that? 00:35:35.23\00:35:36.56 That's why we are told in Romans 13:14, 00:35:36.60\00:35:39.23 "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:35:39.27\00:35:42.74 and make no provision for the flesh, 00:35:42.77\00:35:45.71 to fulfill its lusts." 00:35:45.74\00:35:48.08 So now that we are still in the flesh, 00:35:48.11\00:35:49.84 that's going to be the final aspect of salvation, 00:35:49.88\00:35:52.38 say from the presence of sin, 00:35:52.41\00:35:54.52 the sinful flesh, but while we're in it, 00:35:54.55\00:35:57.15 we do not have to allow sin to reign in our mortal bodies, 00:35:57.19\00:36:01.32 because our brother Jesus 00:36:01.36\00:36:03.43 became victorious over flesh and blood. 00:36:03.46\00:36:05.96 Amen. Amen. 00:36:05.99\00:36:07.66 Amen. Praise God. 00:36:07.70\00:36:09.16 Amen, John. 00:36:09.20\00:36:10.53 Well, my name is James Rafferty, 00:36:10.57\00:36:12.33 and I have Wednesday's lesson which is entitled, 00:36:12.37\00:36:15.87 Perfected Through Sufferings. 00:36:15.90\00:36:17.87 And we're going to be looking at Hebrews 2:10, 00:36:17.91\00:36:21.64 17, 18, and Hebrews 5:8-9. 00:36:21.68\00:36:25.35 And the question we're going to be asking is, 00:36:25.38\00:36:27.25 what was the function 00:36:27.28\00:36:31.32 of suffering in Jesus life? 00:36:31.35\00:36:33.42 So let's look at Hebrews 2:10, 17 and 18 first. 00:36:33.46\00:36:38.26 Hebrews 2:10 says, 00:36:38.29\00:36:39.63 "For it became him, for whom are all things, 00:36:39.66\00:36:43.06 and by whom are all things, 00:36:43.10\00:36:44.80 in bringing many sons unto glory, 00:36:44.83\00:36:46.57 to make the captain of their salvation 00:36:46.60\00:36:48.80 perfect through sufferings." 00:36:48.84\00:36:50.61 And then verses 17 and 18, 00:36:50.64\00:36:54.11 "Wherefore in all things it behooved him 00:36:54.14\00:36:57.08 to be made like unto his brethren," 00:36:57.11\00:36:59.31 as we've been talking about, 00:36:59.35\00:37:01.95 "that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest 00:37:01.98\00:37:05.29 in things pertaining to God, 00:37:05.32\00:37:06.72 to make reconciliation for the sins of the people." 00:37:06.76\00:37:09.96 And then verse 18, 00:37:09.99\00:37:11.33 "For in that he himself has suffered being tempted, 00:37:11.36\00:37:14.70 he is able to succor them or to aid them 00:37:14.73\00:37:17.40 or to help them that are tempted." 00:37:17.43\00:37:20.27 So the questions asked, 00:37:20.30\00:37:22.24 what was the function of suffering in Jesus life? 00:37:22.27\00:37:26.14 And the answer is, well, verse 10, 00:37:26.17\00:37:28.04 to bring many sons to glory, 00:37:28.08\00:37:30.48 to bring many sons and daughters to glory, 00:37:30.51\00:37:32.71 to bring us to glory, okay? 00:37:32.75\00:37:34.62 And then verse 17, to be a merciful high priest. 00:37:34.65\00:37:39.49 In 17 second part to be a faithful high priest. 00:37:39.52\00:37:44.49 That's right. 00:37:44.53\00:37:45.86 Because you know, we're just talking about this. 00:37:45.89\00:37:47.93 Jesus Christ is faithful, Jesus Christ was faithful, 00:37:47.96\00:37:52.40 He was faithful as a human. 00:37:52.43\00:37:53.90 You see, the first Adam wasn't faithful, 00:37:53.94\00:37:55.80 the first Adam and Eve, 00:37:55.84\00:37:57.61 both surrendered their will to the devil, 00:37:57.64\00:38:01.84 to Satan, to the accuser. 00:38:01.88\00:38:03.75 They both made a choice to partake of the tree 00:38:03.78\00:38:06.25 of the knowledge of good and evil. 00:38:06.28\00:38:07.72 And so Jesus Christ comes in as the second Adam, 00:38:07.75\00:38:10.89 according to 1 Corinthians Chapter 15. 00:38:10.92\00:38:12.85 And He partakes of our human nature, 00:38:12.89\00:38:15.79 He partakes of a weakened will, 00:38:15.82\00:38:17.83 a will that has to be surrendered to God. 00:38:17.86\00:38:20.50 And we know that in Matthew 26, 00:38:20.53\00:38:22.10 right, three times He says, "Not My will, 00:38:22.13\00:38:23.90 but Thy will be done, not My will, 00:38:23.93\00:38:25.43 but Thy will be done, not My will, 00:38:25.47\00:38:26.84 but Thy will be done." 00:38:26.87\00:38:28.20 Right? 00:38:28.24\00:38:29.57 That is the weakness of the nature 00:38:29.60\00:38:30.94 that Jesus Christ takes upon Himself. 00:38:30.97\00:38:33.27 No human being has ever done what Jesus did. 00:38:33.31\00:38:36.91 We've surrendered our wills some of the time, 00:38:36.95\00:38:39.25 we've surrendered our will most of the time, 00:38:39.28\00:38:41.15 we've surrendered our will almost most of the time, 00:38:41.18\00:38:43.99 but never 100% all of the time. 00:38:44.02\00:38:46.49 Yeah. That's right. 00:38:46.52\00:38:47.86 Jesus surrendered His will all of the time, 00:38:47.89\00:38:49.99 even when His desires seemed to be good desires. 00:38:50.03\00:38:53.29 You talked about the desires, 00:38:53.33\00:38:54.66 the temptation to our own desires, 00:38:54.70\00:38:56.77 Jesus desired to heal people. 00:38:56.80\00:38:58.90 And Satan said, "Well, 00:38:58.93\00:39:01.77 we'll take a little advantage here, 00:39:01.80\00:39:03.14 you know, bring some maim and sick people 00:39:03.17\00:39:04.51 and why don't you heal them 00:39:04.54\00:39:05.87 and you can prove you're Messiah?" 00:39:05.91\00:39:07.24 Well, it wasn't God's will. That's right. 00:39:07.28\00:39:08.61 It wasn't God's will. 00:39:08.64\00:39:09.98 Jesus desire to eat 00:39:10.01\00:39:11.35 after 40 days of hungering and fasting. 00:39:11.38\00:39:13.35 And the devil said, "Hey, 00:39:13.38\00:39:14.72 you know, why don't you turn these stones into bread? 00:39:14.75\00:39:16.18 You got the power to turn stones." 00:39:16.22\00:39:17.55 When was the last time you attempted 00:39:17.59\00:39:18.92 to turn stones into bread, John? 00:39:18.95\00:39:20.49 I probably would have done it because I'm always hungry. 00:39:20.52\00:39:23.63 Jesus was able to do something 00:39:23.66\00:39:26.16 that we weren't able to do 00:39:26.19\00:39:27.53 and the devil capitalized on that. 00:39:27.56\00:39:29.90 Because the devil came into His human nature 00:39:29.93\00:39:32.23 which is our human nature 00:39:32.27\00:39:33.60 which has continually surrendered to the devil 00:39:33.64\00:39:36.37 and He said, "Well, He'll surrender to me again. 00:39:36.40\00:39:37.97 I've got 40 days of fasting on Him right now 00:39:38.01\00:39:40.24 I'm going to get Him to turn those stones into bread." 00:39:40.28\00:39:42.21 But even though it was Christ's desire to eat, 00:39:42.24\00:39:45.18 it was not God's will for Him 00:39:45.21\00:39:46.92 to turn those stones into bread. 00:39:46.95\00:39:48.45 And so He refused to surrender His will to Satan. 00:39:48.48\00:39:53.62 He continued to surrender His will to God, 00:39:53.66\00:39:55.76 He was faithful. 00:39:55.79\00:39:57.13 He was merciful. 00:39:57.16\00:39:58.49 And then Hebrews 2:18, says, "Therefore, He can help us. 00:39:58.53\00:40:03.93 He can aid us who are tempted." 00:40:03.97\00:40:06.33 Praise God. That's right. 00:40:06.37\00:40:07.70 Amen. 00:40:07.74\00:40:09.07 Because the greatest battle that we have to fight 00:40:09.10\00:40:10.44 is the surrender of the will to God. 00:40:10.47\00:40:12.74 And when we surrender the will to God, guess what? 00:40:12.77\00:40:15.21 Everything else falls into place. 00:40:15.24\00:40:16.75 Amen. 00:40:16.78\00:40:18.11 We have the victory, once that will is surrendered. 00:40:18.15\00:40:19.81 And so Jesus Christ came to meet us 00:40:19.85\00:40:21.82 in His human nature, 00:40:21.85\00:40:23.18 right where we need His aid, 00:40:23.22\00:40:25.05 right where we need His help. 00:40:25.09\00:40:27.26 And in that way, He's just like us. 00:40:27.29\00:40:29.56 Now as John said, and we need to understand 00:40:29.59\00:40:32.43 that in many ways, His nature was not like us. 00:40:32.46\00:40:34.60 He was harmless, He was holy, He was undefiled. 00:40:34.63\00:40:37.17 He was separate from sinners. 00:40:37.20\00:40:39.20 You know, so we can't give Him propensities to sin. 00:40:39.23\00:40:41.30 We can't give Him inclinations to sin. 00:40:41.34\00:40:43.81 We can give Him propensities 00:40:43.84\00:40:45.17 and inclination to do good things. 00:40:45.21\00:40:47.11 We can give Him propensities and inclination 00:40:47.14\00:40:49.81 to tap into His divine power. 00:40:49.84\00:40:51.68 He probably came with that because He was God. 00:40:51.71\00:40:54.25 But He didn't have a propensity to evil unto sin. 00:40:54.28\00:40:57.25 And Jesus had to discern 00:40:57.29\00:40:59.42 what is God's will and what is My will? 00:40:59.45\00:41:02.09 And He had to surrender His will 00:41:02.12\00:41:03.49 continually to God. 00:41:03.53\00:41:04.89 And in that way, He can help us. 00:41:04.93\00:41:06.46 Because it says here in verses 17 and 18, 00:41:06.49\00:41:08.80 especially 18, He's able to help us. 00:41:08.83\00:41:11.03 That's right. 00:41:11.07\00:41:12.40 Because that's what we need help with, don't we? 00:41:12.43\00:41:13.77 What is your will God and what is my desire? 00:41:13.80\00:41:16.64 What do you want me to do and what do I want to do? 00:41:16.67\00:41:18.94 And how do we navigate all of that? 00:41:18.97\00:41:21.34 In Chapter 5, 00:41:21.38\00:41:22.71 these are other two verses, verses 8 and 9. 00:41:22.74\00:41:24.68 It says, "Though He were a Son, 00:41:24.71\00:41:27.15 yet He learned obedience by the things 00:41:27.18\00:41:29.48 which He suffered. 00:41:29.52\00:41:30.85 And being made perfect, 00:41:30.89\00:41:32.39 He became the author of eternal salvation 00:41:32.42\00:41:35.42 under them that obey Him." 00:41:35.46\00:41:37.29 So I love this. 00:41:37.33\00:41:38.66 He learned obedience. Why? 00:41:38.69\00:41:40.03 Because He had a nature 00:41:40.06\00:41:41.80 that had to be surrendered to God's will, 00:41:41.83\00:41:43.80 over and over again, not My will, 00:41:43.83\00:41:45.23 but Thy will be done. 00:41:45.27\00:41:46.60 That was the battle cry of Christ. 00:41:46.63\00:41:48.50 I didn't come to do My will, 00:41:48.54\00:41:49.87 I came to do the will of the Father. 00:41:49.90\00:41:51.51 And He's now become the author of eternal salvation, 00:41:51.54\00:41:54.34 because eternal salvation is all about that surrender. 00:41:54.38\00:41:57.38 When I first accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior, 00:41:57.41\00:41:59.71 I got on my knees and I said, 00:41:59.75\00:42:01.08 "You know, Lord, I've been doing it my way 00:42:01.12\00:42:02.45 and a little bit of your way. 00:42:02.48\00:42:03.82 I mean, I pray every night, whether I'm drunk or sober, 00:42:03.85\00:42:05.92 I go to church every once in a while, 00:42:05.95\00:42:07.29 a little bit of Your way. 00:42:07.32\00:42:08.66 But I've been doing it my way, all of my life. 00:42:08.69\00:42:10.13 And now I'm going to give You my heart, 00:42:10.16\00:42:11.53 I'm going to ask that You would come in, 00:42:11.56\00:42:13.19 and You would do in me Your will and not my will." 00:42:13.23\00:42:17.10 And I've never been the same since then. 00:42:17.13\00:42:19.10 Now, you know, we all have our ups and downs, 00:42:19.13\00:42:20.87 we all have our slips and falls, right? 00:42:20.90\00:42:23.37 But we have a merciful high priest, 00:42:23.41\00:42:25.47 who is able to succor us, 00:42:25.51\00:42:27.01 to aid us, to help us, to forgive us. 00:42:27.04\00:42:29.81 The author of the quarterly says 00:42:29.84\00:42:31.18 that the apostle says 00:42:31.21\00:42:32.55 that God made Jesus perfect through sufferings. 00:42:32.58\00:42:34.55 And this expression, he says, is surprising. 00:42:34.58\00:42:37.25 The author has said that 00:42:37.29\00:42:38.62 Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God, 00:42:38.65\00:42:40.19 the exact imprint of His nature, Hebrews 1:3, 00:42:40.22\00:42:42.89 and that he is sinless, spotless, undefiled, 00:42:42.92\00:42:45.09 and holy, Hebrews 4:15. 00:42:45.13\00:42:46.66 Hebrews 7:26-28, and Hebrews 9:14, 00:42:46.70\00:42:49.76 and Hebrews 10:5-10. 00:42:49.80\00:42:51.20 "There is no doubt that Jesus is Holy. 00:42:51.23\00:42:54.00 Jesus did not have to overcome any kind of moral 00:42:54.04\00:42:56.74 or ethical imperfection, 00:42:56.77\00:42:58.34 He was perfect both morally and ethically," 00:42:58.37\00:43:01.61 the author of the quarterly says. 00:43:01.64\00:43:03.71 Hebrews does say, however, 00:43:03.75\00:43:05.58 that Jesus underwent a process of perfecting 00:43:05.61\00:43:09.02 that provided Him with the means to save us. 00:43:09.05\00:43:11.49 We've just talked about that. 00:43:11.52\00:43:12.85 Jesus was perfected in the sense 00:43:12.89\00:43:15.02 that He was equipped to be our Savior. 00:43:15.06\00:43:16.99 He took a nature that had a will 00:43:17.03\00:43:18.59 that had to be surrendered to God's will. 00:43:18.63\00:43:20.20 That's our nature. 00:43:20.23\00:43:22.20 Jesus was perfected through sufferings 00:43:22.23\00:43:24.27 in order to become the captain of our salvation, 00:43:24.30\00:43:26.47 Hebrews 2:10. 00:43:26.50\00:43:27.84 Jesus had to die on the cross as a sacrifice, 00:43:27.87\00:43:30.81 so that the Father could have the legal means to save us. 00:43:30.84\00:43:33.98 I love that, that's what Shelley 00:43:34.01\00:43:35.41 what you were referring to earlier. 00:43:35.44\00:43:37.51 Jesus was perfect, 00:43:37.55\00:43:39.01 the perfect sacrificial offering, 00:43:39.05\00:43:40.58 the only one as God Jesus could judge us 00:43:40.62\00:43:44.85 but because of His sacrifice, 00:43:44.89\00:43:46.45 Jesus also can save us. 00:43:46.49\00:43:48.66 That's right. Amen. 00:43:48.69\00:43:50.03 "Jesus learned obedience through suffering." 00:43:50.06\00:43:51.43 Hebrews 5:8. 00:43:51.46\00:43:52.79 Obedience was necessary for two things. 00:43:52.83\00:43:54.93 First, obedience made His sacrifice acceptable, 00:43:54.96\00:43:57.63 Hebrews 9:14, Hebrews 10:5-10. 00:43:57.67\00:44:00.14 Second, His sufferings enabled Him 00:44:00.17\00:44:03.04 to become our example. 00:44:03.07\00:44:04.74 Jesus learned obedience 00:44:04.77\00:44:06.74 because He never experienced it before. 00:44:06.78\00:44:10.45 Whoa! 00:44:10.48\00:44:11.81 As God, whom would He have had to obey, 00:44:11.85\00:44:15.65 as the eternal Son, the one with God, 00:44:15.68\00:44:17.89 He was obeyed as the ruler of the universe. 00:44:17.92\00:44:20.06 Therefore, Jesus did not progress 00:44:20.09\00:44:21.82 from disobedience to obedience, 00:44:21.86\00:44:23.73 but from sovereignty and dominion 00:44:23.76\00:44:25.86 to submission and obedience. 00:44:25.89\00:44:27.73 One who was obeyed to the one who obeyed. 00:44:27.76\00:44:31.43 The exalted Son of God became the obedient Son of Man. 00:44:31.47\00:44:34.80 Isn't that beautiful? 00:44:34.84\00:44:36.17 I'm just reading the lesson quarterly here. 00:44:36.20\00:44:37.54 It's so powerful, you know, sometimes the quarterly hits, 00:44:37.57\00:44:40.64 it's so spot on, 00:44:40.68\00:44:43.01 you just have to read the words. 00:44:43.04\00:44:44.38 Amen. 00:44:44.41\00:44:45.75 "Suffering, temptation and being victorious 00:44:45.78\00:44:47.12 enabled Jesus to be a merciful and faithful high priest." 00:44:47.15\00:44:49.98 Hebrews 2:17-18. 00:44:50.02\00:44:52.19 Sufferings did not make Jesus more merciful. 00:44:52.22\00:44:54.49 To the contrary, it was because of Jesus' mercy 00:44:54.52\00:44:57.56 that He volunteered to die 00:44:57.59\00:44:59.49 on the cross to save us to begin with. 00:44:59.53\00:45:03.16 Yet it was through sufferings 00:45:03.20\00:45:05.00 that the reality of Jesus' brotherly love 00:45:05.03\00:45:07.40 was truly expressed and revealed. 00:45:07.44\00:45:09.47 I lucked out this week, I lucked out, 00:45:09.50\00:45:11.24 because I was given the lesson 00:45:11.27\00:45:13.88 that I simply had to read, 00:45:13.91\00:45:15.51 read the Bible verses. 00:45:15.54\00:45:18.08 Read the words. It's all right here. 00:45:18.11\00:45:20.88 This lesson was beautiful and powerful. 00:45:20.92\00:45:23.92 This day's lesson was beautiful and powerful, 00:45:23.95\00:45:25.65 because it kind of brought together 00:45:25.69\00:45:27.29 everything for this week, 00:45:27.32\00:45:28.86 everything in one basic punch, 00:45:28.89\00:45:31.39 and that is, Jesus became everything we needed Him 00:45:31.43\00:45:35.33 to be without becoming contaminated with who we are. 00:45:35.36\00:45:39.33 And He did this so that He could aid us, 00:45:39.37\00:45:41.27 so that He could succor us, 00:45:41.30\00:45:42.64 so that He could help us with our temptations. 00:45:42.67\00:45:45.57 And Jesus has done exactly that. 00:45:45.61\00:45:47.81 So, if the sinless Jesus suffered, 00:45:47.84\00:45:50.88 we as sinners surely will suffer as well. 00:45:50.91\00:45:53.62 How can we learn to endure the tragedies of life 00:45:53.65\00:45:55.88 while at the same time drawing hope 00:45:55.92\00:45:57.45 and assurance from the Lord 00:45:57.49\00:45:58.82 who has revealed His love to us in so many powerful ways? 00:45:58.85\00:46:02.46 By looking unto Jesus, 00:46:02.49\00:46:04.39 the author and the finisher of our faith, 00:46:04.43\00:46:07.46 Hebrews 12:1. 00:46:07.50\00:46:09.80 Amen. 00:46:09.83\00:46:11.17 Amen. Amen. 00:46:11.20\00:46:12.53 Wonderful. Praise the Lord. 00:46:12.57\00:46:13.90 It has been a blessing just to sit here 00:46:13.94\00:46:15.27 and listen to each one of these days' presentation. 00:46:15.30\00:46:17.41 My name is John Dinzey. 00:46:17.44\00:46:18.77 And I have Thursday's portion, and it is entitled, 00:46:18.81\00:46:21.88 The Brother As a Model or As an Example. 00:46:21.91\00:46:25.31 And this focuses in on Hebrews 12:1-4. 00:46:25.35\00:46:30.99 And so the lesson begins by saying, 00:46:31.02\00:46:33.42 another reason why Jesus adopted our human nature 00:46:33.46\00:46:36.62 and lived among us was so that He could be our example, 00:46:36.66\00:46:41.16 the only One who could model for us, 00:46:41.20\00:46:44.00 what is the right way to live before God? 00:46:44.03\00:46:48.44 Let's look at Hebrews 12:1, beginning there, 00:46:48.47\00:46:52.17 "Therefore we also, 00:46:52.21\00:46:54.08 since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses," 00:46:54.11\00:46:58.18 this is a reference to the previous chapter, 00:46:58.21\00:47:00.98 "let us lay aside every weight and the sin 00:47:01.02\00:47:03.62 which so easily ensnares us," 00:47:03.65\00:47:06.35 besets us in the King James Version, 00:47:06.39\00:47:08.69 "and let us run with endurance the race 00:47:08.72\00:47:11.43 that is set before us." 00:47:11.46\00:47:14.10 Now this is interesting, because Hebrews Chapter 12, 00:47:14.13\00:47:17.43 beginning in verse 1 00:47:17.47\00:47:18.80 is making a reference to Hebrews Chapter 11, 00:47:18.83\00:47:21.14 where's what people call 00:47:21.17\00:47:23.47 the Great Hall of Heroes of Faith, 00:47:23.51\00:47:26.24 that by faith, 00:47:26.27\00:47:27.61 they endured different trials and difficulties. 00:47:27.64\00:47:30.31 And notice here, that it says here 00:47:30.35\00:47:34.25 that we are to lay aside every weight and the sin 00:47:34.28\00:47:37.89 which so easily ensnares us. 00:47:37.92\00:47:39.35 This is very interesting to me, 00:47:39.39\00:47:40.79 because it says that we are to run a race. 00:47:40.82\00:47:43.32 I used to run races, 00:47:43.36\00:47:44.69 I used to be in track in high school. 00:47:44.73\00:47:47.83 And I tell you, 00:47:47.86\00:47:49.43 you cannot put on a lot of outer garments 00:47:49.46\00:47:52.43 to run a race. 00:47:52.47\00:47:53.80 It will become an obstacle for you 00:47:53.84\00:47:55.77 in the movements you have to make. 00:47:55.80\00:47:57.84 And you have an added weight. 00:47:57.87\00:48:00.91 And you cannot run in combat boots a race 00:48:00.94\00:48:04.18 and expect to win. 00:48:04.21\00:48:05.55 Now, some people may eventually have that ability, 00:48:05.58\00:48:08.38 but you're supposed to get good running shoes, 00:48:08.42\00:48:10.95 you're supposed to wear clothing 00:48:10.99\00:48:12.42 that are fit for the race, 00:48:12.45\00:48:14.42 that it will enable you to be able to run 00:48:14.46\00:48:17.43 comfortably and relaxed. 00:48:17.46\00:48:19.59 And I have to tell you that as Christians, 00:48:19.63\00:48:23.47 we are running a race 00:48:23.50\00:48:24.83 and it makes a difference what you wear, 00:48:24.87\00:48:27.74 you must dress according to what you profess. 00:48:27.77\00:48:29.90 You're a Christian, dress like a Christian. 00:48:29.94\00:48:32.64 And I tell you, if you're about to run a race, 00:48:32.67\00:48:36.54 you don't eat a meal and fill yourself so full, 00:48:36.58\00:48:40.95 that your concentration is on your stomach. 00:48:40.98\00:48:43.32 Whoa, am I going to throw up now. 00:48:43.35\00:48:45.32 Your concentration is going to be inhibited. 00:48:45.35\00:48:48.19 Your ability to function 00:48:48.22\00:48:50.13 is going to create a problem for you. 00:48:50.16\00:48:53.36 So for a race, you prepare for the race, 00:48:53.40\00:48:56.26 you eat right. 00:48:56.30\00:48:57.67 And as Christians, we should eat those things 00:48:57.70\00:49:00.47 that are good for us 00:49:00.50\00:49:01.84 because our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:49:01.87\00:49:04.51 There's a lot of things we can look at 00:49:04.54\00:49:05.87 as we consider this idea of a race. 00:49:05.91\00:49:08.94 And I can tell you, it affects your endurance 00:49:08.98\00:49:12.25 if you're not eating the proper things. 00:49:12.28\00:49:14.78 So I encourage you as a Christian 00:49:14.82\00:49:16.55 to dress and eat like a Christian. 00:49:16.58\00:49:19.49 And so let us consider these things 00:49:19.52\00:49:22.39 that are set before us as Christians, 00:49:22.42\00:49:24.96 there are things that hinder us 00:49:24.99\00:49:27.33 from being able to run the race with endurance. 00:49:27.36\00:49:32.53 And it's a race that we have to run. 00:49:32.57\00:49:34.37 Now, it's interesting, when you run a race, 00:49:34.40\00:49:36.94 there's only one winner. 00:49:36.97\00:49:38.74 But in the Christian race 00:49:38.77\00:49:40.18 all can be winners through Jesus Christ 00:49:40.21\00:49:43.31 because He has been victorious 00:49:43.35\00:49:45.21 and it is by His grace that we are saved. 00:49:45.25\00:49:48.08 In a race, you are running on your own. 00:49:48.12\00:49:50.12 You're depending on what you can do. 00:49:50.15\00:49:52.12 You know, the coach used to tell me, 00:49:52.15\00:49:53.49 stick to the people in the front, 00:49:53.52\00:49:55.26 run with the people in the front, 00:49:55.29\00:49:56.73 they are the ones that are going to win the race. 00:49:56.76\00:50:00.03 And so I tell you, stick to Jesus, 00:50:00.06\00:50:03.16 He is the one that is going to carry you 00:50:03.20\00:50:05.33 across the finish line. 00:50:05.37\00:50:07.17 And so let's look at verse 2 in Hebrews Chapter 12. 00:50:07.20\00:50:09.60 And it says, "Looking unto Jesus 00:50:09.64\00:50:11.27 you're to run this race, 00:50:11.31\00:50:12.64 looking unto Jesus, 00:50:12.67\00:50:14.01 the author and finisher of our faith, 00:50:14.04\00:50:16.91 who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, 00:50:16.95\00:50:20.42 despising the shame has sat down 00:50:20.45\00:50:22.35 at the right hand of the throne of God." 00:50:22.38\00:50:24.62 You've already heard in previous lessons, 00:50:24.65\00:50:26.35 what some of these things mean about 00:50:26.39\00:50:27.92 sitting down at the right hand of the throne of God. 00:50:27.96\00:50:30.33 In the lesson, it says 00:50:30.36\00:50:32.39 that this passage calls Jesus the founder 00:50:32.43\00:50:35.10 and perfecter of our faith, 00:50:35.13\00:50:37.40 and the Greek word archegos, 00:50:37.43\00:50:40.24 means founder or even pioneer, 00:50:40.27\00:50:42.97 and Jesus is the author and the finisher of our faith. 00:50:43.00\00:50:47.58 We can look to Him and trust in Him, 00:50:47.61\00:50:50.81 because He is going to do a work in us 00:50:50.85\00:50:54.18 to enable us to be victorious. 00:50:54.22\00:50:56.99 And so how should we face temptations? 00:50:57.02\00:50:59.72 Looking unto Jesus. 00:50:59.75\00:51:01.99 And now the joy set before us, as I said in another occasion, 00:51:02.02\00:51:07.13 the joy is that we are going to be able to be with the Lord 00:51:07.16\00:51:10.03 throughout eternity. 00:51:10.07\00:51:11.47 We are going to see family members 00:51:11.50\00:51:13.47 that have also given their hearts to the Lord, 00:51:13.50\00:51:15.70 the joy set before us. 00:51:15.74\00:51:18.04 The Bible says 00:51:18.07\00:51:19.41 that eyes have not seen nor ears heard, 00:51:19.44\00:51:22.18 neither has entered into the thoughts 00:51:22.21\00:51:23.71 of men the things 00:51:23.75\00:51:25.08 that God has prepared for us. 00:51:25.11\00:51:26.68 So I encourage you to hold on with endurance 00:51:26.72\00:51:30.19 because we have a mighty God that will give us 00:51:30.22\00:51:33.56 all the help that we need. 00:51:33.59\00:51:36.16 Now, in Isaiah 1:16 and 18, 00:51:36.19\00:51:38.99 there are things we need to do to cooperate with the Lord. 00:51:39.03\00:51:42.00 And in verse 16, it says, "Wash you, make you clean." 00:51:42.03\00:51:45.07 God is going to wash you and make you clean. 00:51:45.10\00:51:46.84 Now notice what we have to do by God's grace 00:51:46.87\00:51:49.64 put away the evil of your doings 00:51:49.67\00:51:51.97 from before mine eyes cease to do evil. 00:51:52.01\00:51:55.51 We can only do this as we submit to the Lord. 00:51:55.54\00:51:59.21 And it says, "Learn to do well, seek judgment, 00:51:59.25\00:52:03.15 relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, 00:52:03.18\00:52:05.35 plead for the widow." 00:52:05.39\00:52:06.72 By God's grace, we are to do good works, 00:52:06.76\00:52:09.22 but we have to learn to do good works. 00:52:09.26\00:52:11.29 And you know, we've talked about, 00:52:11.33\00:52:12.66 you've heard about 00:52:12.69\00:52:14.03 inherited tendencies toward evil, 00:52:14.06\00:52:15.90 and cultivated tendencies toward evil, 00:52:15.93\00:52:18.23 these things, by God's grace, 00:52:18.27\00:52:21.00 we have to form new patterns of thought. 00:52:21.04\00:52:23.61 You know, when you have hereditary 00:52:23.64\00:52:25.97 tendency toward evil, and you do them, 00:52:26.01\00:52:27.91 those things are strengthened in you, 00:52:27.94\00:52:30.35 so that you have a natural desire 00:52:30.38\00:52:32.61 to do these things. 00:52:32.65\00:52:33.98 I like to study the issues of the brain. 00:52:34.02\00:52:36.05 And they say that, when you do things, 00:52:36.08\00:52:39.02 the first time it forms 00:52:39.05\00:52:40.39 a thin connection in your brain. 00:52:40.42\00:52:41.86 But as you continue doing these, 00:52:41.89\00:52:43.26 these connections get stronger and stronger and stronger. 00:52:43.29\00:52:46.26 And it becomes natural for you to react 00:52:46.29\00:52:49.20 to things around you and things you hear, 00:52:49.23\00:52:51.77 things you see, 00:52:51.80\00:52:53.13 you have a natural tendency to do evil 00:52:53.17\00:52:56.30 if you continue to do these things. 00:52:56.34\00:52:58.34 But praise be to God, 00:52:58.37\00:52:59.84 science has discovered what the Bible has talked about 00:52:59.87\00:53:02.84 long before because it says that 00:53:02.88\00:53:05.01 you can be transformed by the renewing of your mind. 00:53:05.05\00:53:08.38 And those connections can be disabled 00:53:08.42\00:53:11.19 because you form new habits of thought 00:53:11.22\00:53:13.62 through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:53:13.66\00:53:15.82 Amen. 00:53:15.86\00:53:17.19 And so Philippians 4:13 says, 00:53:17.23\00:53:19.19 "I can do all things through Christ 00:53:19.23\00:53:22.56 which strengtheneth me." 00:53:22.60\00:53:24.43 Depend on Jesus, 00:53:24.47\00:53:26.10 He is the author and the finisher of your faith. 00:53:26.13\00:53:29.17 That's why in James 4:7, the Bible says, 00:53:29.20\00:53:31.81 "Submit yourselves therefore to God." 00:53:31.84\00:53:35.51 If you submit yourself to God, 00:53:35.54\00:53:37.58 then you can do what the last part 00:53:37.61\00:53:39.65 of the verse says, 00:53:39.68\00:53:41.02 resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 00:53:41.05\00:53:43.55 He's going to say, 00:53:43.59\00:53:44.92 I can't do anything with this person. 00:53:44.95\00:53:46.55 I got to go to somebody else, 00:53:46.59\00:53:48.32 because if you have Jesus in you, 00:53:48.36\00:53:50.26 you can be more than a conqueror. 00:53:50.29\00:53:52.19 Praise the Lord. 00:53:52.23\00:53:53.56 So daily, moment by moment, we must submit, 00:53:53.60\00:53:57.40 as we talked about 00:53:57.43\00:53:58.77 the will to the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:53:58.80\00:54:01.44 And this is described in James Chapter, 00:54:01.47\00:54:04.87 no, John Chapter 15, 00:54:04.91\00:54:06.64 and I'm going to verse 5, because of lack of time. 00:54:06.68\00:54:09.28 Jesus says, "I am the vine, 00:54:09.31\00:54:11.58 you are the branches, you are the branches. 00:54:11.61\00:54:13.65 He that abideth in me, 00:54:13.68\00:54:15.38 and I in Him, as you've heard, 00:54:15.42\00:54:17.49 the same bringeth forth much fruit, 00:54:17.52\00:54:19.82 for without Me you can do nothing." 00:54:19.85\00:54:22.29 This is something we must all understand. 00:54:22.32\00:54:24.99 You know, some people listening 00:54:25.03\00:54:28.03 may be the president of a corporation, 00:54:28.06\00:54:31.90 and maybe may have hundreds 00:54:31.93\00:54:33.37 or maybe thousands of people under you, 00:54:33.40\00:54:35.20 you are in charge, you're the boss. 00:54:35.24\00:54:37.61 But you know, when it comes to facing temptations, 00:54:37.64\00:54:39.91 facing against the devil, you need Jesus. 00:54:39.94\00:54:42.78 You need Jesus, we all need Jesus, 00:54:42.81\00:54:45.98 and we must submit to Him before we can face the devil, 00:54:46.01\00:54:51.05 and then we can be enabled to be victorious. 00:54:51.09\00:54:53.89 So everybody needs Jesus. 00:54:53.92\00:54:56.79 That's why Jesus invites us in Matthew 11:28 to 30, 00:54:56.83\00:54:59.89 "Come unto me, 00:54:59.93\00:55:01.63 all you that labor and are heavy laden, 00:55:01.66\00:55:04.63 and I will give you rest. 00:55:04.67\00:55:06.37 Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me." 00:55:06.40\00:55:08.60 Now remember that a yoke unites two animals in labor. 00:55:08.64\00:55:13.14 Jesus is telling us, 00:55:13.17\00:55:14.51 "Take My yoke unite with Me, 00:55:14.54\00:55:16.64 and learn of Me, 00:55:16.68\00:55:18.38 for I am meek and lowly in heart, 00:55:18.41\00:55:20.28 and you shall find rest unto your souls, 00:55:20.32\00:55:22.32 for My yoke is easy, and my burden is light." 00:55:22.35\00:55:25.49 So our example, our model is Jesus. 00:55:25.52\00:55:28.32 I encourage you, study the life of Jesus Christ, 00:55:28.36\00:55:32.36 how did He live His life? 00:55:32.39\00:55:33.73 How did He face people that were attacking Him, 00:55:33.76\00:55:36.16 the scribes and the Pharisees, you know, constantly after Him? 00:55:36.20\00:55:40.24 Because the devil was working in their minds 00:55:40.27\00:55:43.30 and they allowed the devil 00:55:43.34\00:55:44.67 to put words in their mouth and speak things to Jesus, 00:55:44.71\00:55:47.44 that we're going to create 00:55:47.48\00:55:49.21 these difficult situations for Him, 00:55:49.24\00:55:51.15 but He had His will submitted to God, 00:55:51.18\00:55:53.98 just like we need to submit our will to God, 00:55:54.02\00:55:56.62 and we can rest in Jesus. 00:55:56.65\00:55:58.52 He says, "Come unto Me, abide in Me." 00:55:58.55\00:56:01.62 And with Jesus, we can do all things. 00:56:01.66\00:56:05.23 So I encourage you, that like Paul,
