the Son affirms His

is our Divine Lord,

Sustainer and Sovereign.

And Hebrews 2, He is a merciful,

high human priest.

And, in summary, the
whole description of Jesus,

that lifts up Jesus

And Jesus said,

But the description
of Jesus as our faithful

and merciful brother

is just the
ultimate manifestation

of our eternal God.

So let's look
at Sunday's lesson,

The Brother as a Redeemer.

To redeem means to ransom,

to pay the price to
secure the release of someone

from something.

Matthew 20:28, Jesus said,

"The Son of Man did
not come to be served,

but to serve,

and to give His life

as a ransom for many."

God became a man to die for us,

to ransom us, to pay the price.

Under the sacrificial
system of the Old Covenant,

the Israelites
were constantly reminded

of God's justice.

God had set a penalty
for sin, and that sin,

the penalty was death.

But this death was to
satisfy God's justice.

He has a system
of administration

for His kingdom.

And He's a just God, but
He's also a merciful God.

But don't ever you know,

I talk so much about the
love and the mercy of God,

we must always remember,

He has wrath against sin.

So from the very beginning,
when He created the penalty,

He planned to pay
the penalty Himself,

and to become a
man and offer Himself

as our substitute sacrifice.

So the whole Old Covenant system

pointed to the
substitutionary sacrifice

of Jesus Christ,

God in the flesh,
as our substitute.

But there's something
else in the Old Covenant,

which is the Law of Moses.

What you find in
the Old Covenant system

is something else
that pointed to Jesus
00:08:12.69\00:08:16.16
as our Redeemer.
00:08:16.19\00:08:17.99
And you will probably remember
that in the Old Covenant
00:08:18.03\00:08:22.76
the year of
Jubilee every 50 years,
00:08:22.80\00:08:25.57
all slaves and
captives were set free,
00:08:25.60\00:08:28.67
all debts were remitted,
00:08:28.70\00:08:30.71
and the land that
was lost due to poverty
00:08:30.74\00:08:33.91
came back to
the original owners.
00:08:33.94\00:08:36.21
But I'm going to
tell you something,

50 years is a long
wait, long time to wait.

So the Law of Moses

also provided a system

for a kinsman-redeemer,

the one that was close in kin,

a blood relative
could pay the ransom price

to buy their
relative out of bondage,

or to buy back their estate.

They redeemed,

the kinsman-redeemer would often

marry the widow and we
think of Ruth and Boaz,

where Boaz rescued Ruth
00:09:14.85\00:09:19.25
from poverty and widowhood.
00:09:19.29\00:09:22.36
Now, the concept of
the kinsman-redeemer
00:09:22.39\00:09:25.19
helps us understand Jesus.

This is the
reason God became a man

so that He can be kin to us,
00:09:31.33\00:09:33.77
experience everything.

Hebrews 2:14-15 says,

"Inasmuch then as the

Do you realize,

the first Adam is
called the son of God.

Adam who was created
in the Garden of Eden,

he failed God,

he actually rejected
God's way and he sinned.

But then we're all kin to him.
00:10:14.21\00:10:17.08
And so the Bible
says, "All have sinned."

And if we had to pay
our own wages for sin,
00:10:20.38\00:10:25.89
which is death,
we'd be hopeless,
00:10:25.92\00:10:28.66
because the only way
we'd be eternally dead,
00:10:28.69\00:10:32.89
but God came down.

In 1 Corinthians 15,
Paul calls Him the last Adam.

He's the new in the
person of Jesus Christ.

He is the new
representative of mankind,

and He became
our kinsman-redeemer.

He calls us
brothers and sisters,

and to demonstrate
God's righteousness

as being just and
the one who justifies,

He paid the price
for us as our substitute.

But then He was resurrected,
and He conquered death.

He rendered
Satan's power of death,

null and void.

Romans 3:23-26 says,

"All have sinned,

and fallen short
of the glory of God,

being justified,
freely, get that,

justified freely by His
grace through the redemption

that is in Christ Jesus."

Let me just say something.

It's justified freely,
it doesn't cost us anything.

But it costs God a whole lot.

He had to condescend

to become one of us,

and then die a
painful death on the cross.

So we're justified
freely by His grace

through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus,

whom God sent
forth as a propitiation

by His blood through faith,

to demonstrate
His righteousness,

because in His forbearance,

God had passed over the sins

that were previously committed

Satan was holding us

as prisoners of war in
this great controversy,

tradition from your fathers,

precious blood of Christ,

as a lamb without
blemish and without spot.

He indeed was foreordained

before the

That's right.

what the everlasting gospel is,

it pointed to Jesus.

God has always
been our true Redeemer.

Let me read quickly
to you Exodus 6:5-7,

God says, "I heard the groaning
of the children of Israel

when the Egyptians
kept them in bondage

that I have
remembered My covenant."
00:14:09.08\00:14:11.25
He's talking about
the covenant with Abraham.
00:14:11.28\00:14:16.05
And He says, "Therefore
say to the children of Israel,
00:14:16.08\00:14:18.82
I am the Lord, I
will bring you out
00:14:18.85\00:14:20.69
from under the
burdens of the Egyptians,
00:14:20.72\00:14:22.39
I will rescue you
from their bondage.
00:14:22.42\00:14:25.19
I will redeem you
with an outstretched arm
00:14:25.23\00:14:29.50
and with great judgments,

I'll take you as My
people, and I'll be your God,

For both, notice this,

That's a beautiful thing
to know that the Almighty,

universe, it seems,

Hebrew says that Jesus
is not ashamed to call us

His brethren.

Despite being one with God,

Jesus embraces us
as part of the family.

This solidarity
though contrast it seems

with the public shaming

that the readers
of Hebrews suffered

in their communities,

and we find this
in Hebrews Chapter 10.

So let's go to
Hebrews Chapter 10,

and read verses 32 and 33.

This comes at a cost

because when we are
invited into the family of God,

we often have to go
through some of the sufferings

and tribulation
that also Christ did.

But Christ took
the ultimate shame,

the ultimate suffering,

and He paid the penalty

that we might be
one with Him in family.

It says, "But
recall the former days

you were illuminated,

that means were enlightened,

you endured a great
struggle with sufferings,

Moses is a type of Christ.

But what does that mean for us?

That means we have to also
be sure to humble ourselves,

to hold fast to their confession

of their faith.

We see this in

tribulation in this life,

for the suffering of death,

that He by the grace of God

We just inherited the
nature that Adam imparted to us,

the sin nature that predisposed
every one of us to death.

into this death nature

to free us from
the death nature.

we were destined to be,

So to preempt what we

Once nature was
passed upon all humanity

inherit the propensity.

difference between

the sin nature and propensity?

surrender His will to Satan.

He was faithful.

And then Hebrews 2:18, says,
