So glad to be here. 00:01:44.57\00:01:46.47 I'm studying Jesus is our High Priest. 00:01:46.50\00:01:48.84 Amen. Amen. 00:01:48.87\00:01:50.21 And next to Jill, last but not least, 00:01:50.24\00:01:52.11 is John Lomacang. 00:01:52.14\00:01:53.98 And I'm covering Jesus makes a better covenant. 00:01:54.01\00:01:57.55 Amen. Amen. 00:01:57.58\00:01:59.38 I noticed in the titles that 00:01:59.41\00:02:01.08 a lot of the focus is about Jesus. 00:02:01.12\00:02:03.69 And that really is 00:02:03.72\00:02:05.05 what the Book of Hebrews is about. 00:02:05.09\00:02:06.42 It's all about Jesus and what He means to us 00:02:06.45\00:02:09.56 and what He's accomplished for us. 00:02:09.59\00:02:11.49 So the message of Hebrew Sabbath afternoon begins 00:02:11.53\00:02:15.40 with a number of Bible verses, 00:02:15.43\00:02:17.37 Hebrews 1:5-14, Luke 1:30-33, 00:02:17.40\00:02:23.04 Psalm 132:1-5, Hebrews 2:14-16, 00:02:23.07\00:02:26.81 Hebrews 5:1-4, 1 Peter 2:9, Hebrews 8:8-12, 00:02:26.84\00:02:30.95 we're going to be diving into all of these Bible verses 00:02:30.98\00:02:33.15 looking at all of these themes. 00:02:33.18\00:02:35.05 But before we do that, 00:02:35.08\00:02:36.42 we're going to start with a word of prayer. 00:02:36.45\00:02:39.32 John, would you like to pray for us? 00:02:39.35\00:02:40.69 Sure. Let's go to the Lord in prayer. 00:02:40.72\00:02:43.26 Our loving Heavenly Father, thank You so much, Lord, 00:02:43.29\00:02:47.03 for the Book of Hebrews 00:02:47.06\00:02:48.43 that helps us understand so much 00:02:48.46\00:02:50.57 about the ministry of Jesus Christ, 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.03 His sacrifice for us, 00:02:53.07\00:02:54.70 and the promises that are there in 00:02:54.74\00:02:57.91 give us hope and encouragement. 00:02:57.94\00:02:59.31 We pray that Your Holy Spirit will be upon us. 00:02:59.34\00:03:01.78 Bless us that we may speak Your words, 00:03:01.81\00:03:04.05 and we pray for a blessing upon all that tune in, 00:03:04.08\00:03:07.12 that listen, we pray for Your name to be glorified. 00:03:07.15\00:03:09.68 In Jesus' name, amen. 00:03:09.72\00:03:11.22 Amen. 00:03:11.25\00:03:12.69 Thank you, John. 00:03:12.72\00:03:14.06 So let's just look at our memory text 00:03:14.09\00:03:16.32 for Sabbath afternoon lesson. 00:03:16.36\00:03:19.23 It's found in Hebrews 8:1. 00:03:19.26\00:03:23.80 Hebrews 8:1, it reads, 00:03:23.83\00:03:26.97 "This is the main point of the things we are saying: 00:03:27.00\00:03:30.74 We have such a High Priest, 00:03:30.77\00:03:32.81 who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty 00:03:32.84\00:03:37.05 in the heavens." 00:03:37.08\00:03:38.41 Hebrews 8:1. 00:03:38.45\00:03:40.32 The main point, Paul is summarizing here, 00:03:40.35\00:03:42.65 the main point of what we're talking about 00:03:42.68\00:03:45.15 in the Book of Hebrews. 00:03:45.19\00:03:46.52 And he's in Chapter 8, 00:03:46.55\00:03:47.89 so he's more than halfway through the book. 00:03:47.92\00:03:50.56 So he himself, the author of Hebrews 00:03:50.59\00:03:53.13 summarizes the main point 00:03:53.16\00:03:55.20 of this magnificent masterpiece, 00:03:55.23\00:03:58.93 a proclamation in the New Testament, 00:03:58.97\00:04:01.17 the Book of Hebrews, and he says, 00:04:01.20\00:04:02.54 "The main point is Jesus Christ." 00:04:02.57\00:04:04.61 And the main point 00:04:04.64\00:04:05.97 is that Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.04 of the Majesty in heaven. 00:04:08.08\00:04:09.41 In other words, 00:04:09.44\00:04:10.78 the right hand means the hand of power, 00:04:10.81\00:04:12.78 the hand of favor. 00:04:12.81\00:04:14.32 Jesus is at the right hand meaning 00:04:14.35\00:04:16.79 He has the power and the favor of the Majesty in heaven. 00:04:16.82\00:04:20.56 Jesus Christ, our Savior, our Redeemer has gained for us 00:04:20.59\00:04:25.63 power and has gained for us the favor 00:04:25.66\00:04:28.00 of the Majesty in heaven. 00:04:28.03\00:04:29.40 This is one of the most powerful themes 00:04:29.43\00:04:32.20 that we find in the Book of Hebrews. 00:04:32.23\00:04:34.40 Now going back to this lesson, 00:04:34.44\00:04:36.87 we want to look just a little bit 00:04:36.91\00:04:38.74 at what Paul is doing in the Book of Hebrews 00:04:38.77\00:04:42.18 in relationship to his purpose or his motive. 00:04:42.21\00:04:44.78 The lesson brings out that Paul wrote to the Hebrews, 00:04:44.81\00:04:48.78 to strengthen the faith of the believers 00:04:48.82\00:04:50.92 amid their trials. 00:04:50.95\00:04:52.45 He reminded them and us that the promises of God 00:04:52.49\00:04:56.62 will be fulfilled through Jesus, 00:04:56.66\00:04:58.96 who is seated at the right hand of the Father, 00:04:58.99\00:05:01.06 who will again take us home. 00:05:01.10\00:05:03.37 But in the meantime, 00:05:03.40\00:05:04.73 Jesus mediates the Father's blessings to us. 00:05:04.77\00:05:08.60 So we need to hold fast to our faith unto the end. 00:05:08.64\00:05:13.07 And that is why this book 00:05:13.11\00:05:14.44 is such a powerful proclamation, 00:05:14.48\00:05:16.71 such a powerful message, 00:05:16.75\00:05:18.18 the message of Hebrews to us today, 00:05:18.21\00:05:20.82 because Jesus is still seated at the right hand of power, 00:05:20.85\00:05:24.42 and Jesus is still mediating the blessings of God toward us, 00:05:24.45\00:05:28.26 and we need them. 00:05:28.29\00:05:29.62 Now Sunday's lesson begins with a title Jesus as King. 00:05:29.66\00:05:34.30 And it goes on to describe that one of the main points 00:05:34.33\00:05:37.57 of the Book of Hebrews 00:05:37.60\00:05:38.93 is that Jesus is still the ruler, 00:05:38.97\00:05:41.10 Jesus is King. 00:05:41.14\00:05:43.00 He is seated at the right hand of God, 00:05:43.04\00:05:44.51 meaning that He is the ruler, 00:05:44.54\00:05:46.71 not only in heaven, but also on earth, 00:05:46.74\00:05:48.54 because Jesus is His human name. 00:05:48.58\00:05:51.15 Jesus became a human being. 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.92 Jesus is not only God, 00:05:53.95\00:05:56.02 but Jesus is also part of the human family. 00:05:56.05\00:06:00.19 And really, in reality, 00:06:00.22\00:06:01.56 Jesus has always been the ruler of the universe. 00:06:01.59\00:06:04.83 But when Adam and Eve sinned, 00:06:04.86\00:06:06.96 we're told that this particular planet 00:06:07.00\00:06:10.90 in the universe of God was in a sense... 00:06:10.93\00:06:14.47 Well, I won't say hand it over, 00:06:14.50\00:06:15.97 but it was contended for by another power, 00:06:16.00\00:06:19.51 the devil, Satan, the usurper. 00:06:19.54\00:06:21.81 And Jesus even identifies him 00:06:21.84\00:06:23.85 in several verses in the New Testament 00:06:23.88\00:06:25.75 as the prince of this world. 00:06:25.78\00:06:28.72 John 14:30, John 12:31, 00:06:28.75\00:06:33.42 and John 16:11. 00:06:33.46\00:06:36.36 Jesus, however, 00:06:36.39\00:06:38.03 came and defeated Satan at the cross, 00:06:38.06\00:06:41.23 maintaining the right to rule those 00:06:41.26\00:06:44.97 who accept Him as Savior. 00:06:45.00\00:06:46.60 And that is clarified for us 00:06:46.63\00:06:48.47 in Colossians 2:13-15. 00:06:48.50\00:06:53.21 So the first two chapters of the Book of Hebrews 00:06:53.24\00:06:55.88 focus especially on the inauguration of Christ, 00:06:55.91\00:07:00.12 and what He has accomplished for us as God man. 00:07:00.15\00:07:03.55 And there's these juxtapose between God and man, 00:07:03.59\00:07:08.32 in the identity of Jesus Christ, 00:07:08.36\00:07:10.36 He is divine, and He is human. 00:07:10.39\00:07:12.69 And Paul goes back and forth in Hebrews Chapter 1, 00:07:12.73\00:07:15.46 identifying Christ in these two ways to show us 00:07:15.50\00:07:18.83 that He is the divine human ruler of planet earth, 00:07:18.87\00:07:24.14 that He has taken Adam's place, 00:07:24.17\00:07:26.27 become the second Adam in a sense, 00:07:26.31\00:07:28.14 and yet He is still God in human flesh. 00:07:28.18\00:07:31.28 And in doing this, 00:07:31.31\00:07:32.65 He has accomplished our salvation. 00:07:32.68\00:07:34.98 He has taken from the claims of the devil this planet 00:07:35.02\00:07:39.75 and given it to all those 00:07:39.79\00:07:41.66 who will accept Him as their personal Savior. 00:07:41.69\00:07:44.26 So Jesus Christ is identified as God man, 00:07:44.29\00:07:46.39 man in verses, 00:07:46.43\00:07:47.76 Hebrews 1:5 for example, in verse 9. 00:07:47.80\00:07:51.47 Let's just read there in Hebrews 1:5. 00:07:51.50\00:07:54.24 It says, "For unto which of the angels said 00:07:54.27\00:07:57.21 he at any time, Thou art my Son, 00:07:57.24\00:07:58.84 this day have I begotten thee? 00:07:58.87\00:08:00.48 And again, I will be to him a Father, 00:08:00.51\00:08:02.01 and he shall be to me a Son?" 00:08:02.04\00:08:03.51 So Jesus Christ here incarnate, 00:08:03.55\00:08:06.75 God's only begotten Son coming to this earth, 00:08:06.78\00:08:10.42 being a son, and God being His Father, 00:08:10.45\00:08:14.16 coming to planet earth, as a human 00:08:14.19\00:08:16.66 treading the same steps that we as humans tread, 00:08:16.69\00:08:19.59 being born of a woman, born in a stable, 00:08:19.63\00:08:22.50 born with the same weaknesses 00:08:22.53\00:08:25.40 that we ourselves are born with, 00:08:25.43\00:08:27.04 and yet overcoming our humanity, 00:08:27.07\00:08:29.80 our fallen humanity, and bringing us the victory, 00:08:29.84\00:08:32.57 bringing us the gift of salvation 00:08:32.61\00:08:35.31 through His victory for each one of us. 00:08:35.34\00:08:37.38 And then in verses 6, and 8, and 10, and 11, and 13, 00:08:37.41\00:08:41.78 there is this strong emphasis 00:08:41.82\00:08:43.79 that Jesus Christ is indeed God. 00:08:43.82\00:08:45.49 Let's read, for example, verse 8, 00:08:45.52\00:08:48.02 "But unto the Son he saith, 00:08:48.06\00:08:49.42 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: 00:08:49.46\00:08:53.76 a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom." 00:08:53.80\00:08:57.47 So in these verses, 00:08:57.50\00:08:58.83 we see that Jesus Christ is clearly God. 00:08:58.87\00:09:01.94 And it's so beautiful to recognize this 00:09:01.97\00:09:04.54 as a principle truth in the Book of Hebrews. 00:09:04.57\00:09:07.98 The Book of Hebrews is establishing 00:09:08.01\00:09:10.48 the theme of something better. 00:09:10.51\00:09:12.81 That word better is used over 13 times 00:09:12.85\00:09:15.35 in the Book of Hebrews. 00:09:15.38\00:09:16.72 And in Hebrews Chapter 1, 00:09:16.75\00:09:18.09 we could say that Jesus Christ is representing 00:09:18.12\00:09:20.96 or revealing to us a better God. 00:09:20.99\00:09:23.39 God's name has been misrepresented by the devil. 00:09:23.43\00:09:27.40 We go all the way back 00:09:27.43\00:09:28.76 to the beginning to the inception of sin, 00:09:28.80\00:09:31.47 and we find Satan seeking to misrepresent God. 00:09:31.50\00:09:34.44 God is withholder. 00:09:34.47\00:09:35.80 God doesn't want you to have the fruit of the tree 00:09:35.84\00:09:38.51 of the knowledge of good and evil, 00:09:38.54\00:09:39.87 because He doesn't want you to be like Him. 00:09:39.91\00:09:41.84 You're not going to die. God is a liar. 00:09:41.88\00:09:43.85 God is misrepresented by Satan over and over again 00:09:43.88\00:09:47.68 at the inception of sin. 00:09:47.72\00:09:49.45 And all through the centuries, all through the years, 00:09:49.48\00:09:53.76 down to the very incarnation of Christ, 00:09:53.79\00:09:56.09 people had a misapprehension of God. 00:09:56.12\00:09:58.36 They didn't understand who He was. 00:09:58.39\00:10:00.10 They didn't understand what He was like. 00:10:00.13\00:10:01.76 And so Jesus came to this earth as God man. 00:10:01.80\00:10:05.13 He didn't completely obscure His divinity 00:10:05.17\00:10:08.27 because He came to reveal the Father. 00:10:08.30\00:10:09.94 In fact, in John 14:9, Philip says, 00:10:09.97\00:10:13.14 "Show us the Father and suffices us." 00:10:13.17\00:10:15.34 And Jesus says, "Haven't I been so long with you, Philip, 00:10:15.38\00:10:19.18 when you see me, you've seen the Father." 00:10:19.21\00:10:22.12 Jesus Christ came to reveal, to disclose, 00:10:22.15\00:10:24.29 to uncover the Father to show us 00:10:24.32\00:10:27.09 who the Father really is, 00:10:27.12\00:10:28.96 what the Father is really like, 00:10:28.99\00:10:30.76 so that we could be not only reclaimed from Satan's grasp, 00:10:30.79\00:10:34.96 but that we could be endeared to the Father's heart, 00:10:35.00\00:10:38.30 so that our hearts could be connected with Him, 00:10:38.33\00:10:41.50 so that we could give Him willing service 00:10:41.54\00:10:43.27 so that our love, 00:10:43.30\00:10:44.64 our loyalty could be won back to the Father. 00:10:44.67\00:10:47.24 And this is what we see in the Book of Hebrews. 00:10:47.28\00:10:49.08 We see this amazing proclamation 00:10:49.11\00:10:51.51 not only of the enthronement of Christ in heaven, 00:10:51.55\00:10:54.52 not only the incarnation of Christ in this earth, 00:10:54.55\00:10:56.69 not only of the reclaiming of this world, 00:10:56.72\00:10:59.52 through Jesus Christ for each one of us, 00:10:59.55\00:11:01.66 but we see an amazing dynamic revelation 00:11:01.69\00:11:05.29 of who the Father is in Jesus Christ. 00:11:05.33\00:11:08.63 And Chapter 1 is key, 00:11:08.66\00:11:10.67 because it tells us that God the Father 00:11:10.70\00:11:13.47 didn't send some lesser created being to redeem us. 00:11:13.50\00:11:17.61 Jesus Christ wasn't less than the Father. 00:11:17.64\00:11:20.14 In other words, the accusation 00:11:20.18\00:11:21.81 that the Father in heaven doesn't love us, 00:11:21.84\00:11:24.58 doesn't have our best interest at stake, 00:11:24.61\00:11:26.75 and has no real love for us 00:11:26.78\00:11:28.35 in the sense of self denying and other centered 00:11:28.38\00:11:30.92 was in completely obliterated by Jesus, 00:11:30.95\00:11:33.99 because Jesus was the Father incarnate. 00:11:34.02\00:11:36.93 He was God incarnate. 00:11:36.96\00:11:38.33 And when He came to this earth, 00:11:38.36\00:11:39.69 He came to reveal 00:11:39.73\00:11:41.20 that the Father's heart is filled with self-sacrifice 00:11:41.23\00:11:44.53 that God Himself came to this earth, 00:11:44.57\00:11:47.17 not some third party. 00:11:47.20\00:11:49.10 In other words, a lot of the pagan religions 00:11:49.14\00:11:50.91 were believing that the God 00:11:50.94\00:11:53.27 whoever He is that rules needs the sacrifices 00:11:53.31\00:11:56.75 of some other person to appease his rassle 00:11:56.78\00:11:59.31 that He can be gracious to us. 00:11:59.35\00:12:01.28 But Christianity teaches that God Himself came, 00:12:01.32\00:12:04.82 that God Himself made the sacrifice, 00:12:04.85\00:12:06.76 that God in the person of Jesus Christ is the one 00:12:06.79\00:12:09.99 who reconciles us to His heart. 00:12:10.03\00:12:12.23 It's not some third party, it's God and us. 00:12:12.26\00:12:15.46 And so Hebrews Chapter 1 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.00 establishes this beautiful picture 00:12:17.03\00:12:19.23 of who God is, 00:12:19.27\00:12:20.64 and prepares us for the something better 00:12:20.67\00:12:23.04 that is found all the way through 00:12:23.07\00:12:24.71 the Book of Hebrews. 00:12:24.74\00:12:26.24 The usurper initiated that planet earth is his, 00:12:26.27\00:12:31.48 and he did this by misrepresenting God. 00:12:31.51\00:12:34.12 And so Jesus Christ came to destroy his trafficking. 00:12:34.15\00:12:38.02 Ezekiel Chapter 28 tells us 00:12:38.05\00:12:39.75 this was the trafficking of Satan. 00:12:39.79\00:12:41.46 Trafficking is merchandize of misrepresentation. 00:12:41.49\00:12:44.36 And, of course, Genesis 3 confirms that. 00:12:44.39\00:12:46.80 So Jesus has restored planet earth to us, 00:12:46.83\00:12:50.97 by properly representing who God is 00:12:51.00\00:12:53.44 and what He is like. 00:12:53.47\00:12:54.80 And that character of God is going to be the center part 00:12:54.84\00:12:57.91 of the last message 00:12:57.94\00:12:59.27 that is taken to the entire world. 00:12:59.31\00:13:01.28 And that character is exposed and revealed here 00:13:01.31\00:13:04.65 in the Book of Hebrews. 00:13:04.68\00:13:06.01 And we're going to see this over and over again, 00:13:06.05\00:13:07.68 as we move through the various chapters. 00:13:07.72\00:13:09.55 Jesus Christ then is the legitimate ruler 00:13:09.58\00:13:13.15 of this earth. 00:13:13.19\00:13:14.52 He is engaged in a war with Satan the usurper 00:13:14.56\00:13:17.63 for our allegiance, 00:13:17.66\00:13:19.63 and that allegiance is going to come, 00:13:19.66\00:13:21.30 our allegiance is going to come 00:13:21.33\00:13:22.73 when we see more and more of the character of God, 00:13:22.76\00:13:25.63 when we understand what God is truly like. 00:13:25.67\00:13:28.14 That's why Jesus says in John 17:3, 00:13:28.17\00:13:31.11 "This is life eternal, 00:13:31.14\00:13:32.47 that they might know me the only true God 00:13:32.51\00:13:34.81 or know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, 00:13:34.84\00:13:37.78 whom He has sent." 00:13:37.81\00:13:39.15 Jesus was sent by God to reveal 00:13:39.18\00:13:41.58 what God is really like so that we could know Him, 00:13:41.62\00:13:44.29 and in knowing Him, 00:13:44.32\00:13:45.79 enter back into that life eternal. 00:13:45.82\00:13:48.82 The Book of Hebrews does an outstanding job 00:13:48.86\00:13:51.13 at sharing this picture of God in so many different ways, 00:13:51.16\00:13:54.46 in so many different facets, 00:13:54.50\00:13:55.96 and we're going to be looking at a few of those facets here 00:13:56.00\00:13:58.53 as we get into our lesson in more detail. 00:13:58.57\00:14:00.84 Week number two, looking forward to it. 00:14:00.87\00:14:02.80 John, what do we have? 00:14:02.84\00:14:04.31 Well, in the Monday's lesson, 00:14:04.34\00:14:07.31 we have Jesus as our mediator. 00:14:07.34\00:14:12.45 And so for this lesson, 00:14:12.48\00:14:14.45 you will notice that the word mediator is used 00:14:14.48\00:14:17.79 concerning Jesus Christ 00:14:17.82\00:14:19.32 and how He becomes our mediator. 00:14:19.35\00:14:21.82 And in 1 Timothy 2:5, the Bible tells us, 00:14:21.86\00:14:25.43 "For there's one God and one mediator 00:14:25.46\00:14:28.86 between God and men, 00:14:28.90\00:14:31.53 the Man, Christ Jesus." 00:14:31.57\00:14:34.50 This is it. 00:14:34.54\00:14:35.87 This is Jesus Christ, who became a man, being God, 00:14:35.90\00:14:40.61 He became a man in order to fulfill 00:14:40.64\00:14:44.51 what the Bible says 00:14:44.55\00:14:45.88 concerning His sacrifice to die for us, 00:14:45.91\00:14:50.02 so that then He could become our mediator 00:14:50.05\00:14:52.89 and our high priest. 00:14:52.92\00:14:54.99 And Jesus had to live a perfect life 00:14:55.02\00:14:58.36 as a man in this earth, 00:14:58.39\00:15:02.60 and He endured the assaults of Satan that at every step, 00:15:02.63\00:15:06.84 the devil tried to stop Him from fulfilling 00:15:06.87\00:15:10.27 that which was promised back in Eden. 00:15:10.31\00:15:12.74 Because back in Eden the promise was made 00:15:12.77\00:15:15.11 that the Seed would come 00:15:15.14\00:15:16.98 and give the crushing blow on the serpent's head. 00:15:17.01\00:15:21.08 And so Jesus Christ is that mediator 00:15:21.12\00:15:24.62 between God and man, 00:15:24.65\00:15:25.99 there is no other mediator. 00:15:26.02\00:15:27.36 There's one and I like to stress that 00:15:27.39\00:15:29.26 because there are certain religious groups 00:15:29.29\00:15:31.66 that stress that there's another mediator, 00:15:31.69\00:15:33.80 and this is not true. 00:15:33.83\00:15:35.46 Jesus is the one mediator. 00:15:35.50\00:15:37.80 John 14: 6, 00:15:37.83\00:15:39.83 Jesus begins to help us understand 00:15:39.87\00:15:43.00 that He is the one, 00:15:43.04\00:15:44.84 notice, Jesus said to him, 00:15:44.87\00:15:46.64 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. 00:15:46.68\00:15:51.51 No one comes to the Father except through Me." 00:15:51.55\00:15:55.25 So you cannot come through the Father 00:15:55.28\00:15:57.02 except through Jesus Christ. 00:15:57.05\00:15:59.72 And I'm telling you, it's not the Apostle Paul, 00:15:59.75\00:16:02.96 it's nobody on earth, it's not Mary, 00:16:02.99\00:16:05.66 it's Jesus Christ alone. 00:16:05.69\00:16:08.46 He is our mediator. 00:16:08.50\00:16:10.13 And this is why we see in Acts 4:12, 00:16:10.17\00:16:14.74 Jesus is identified again here 00:16:14.77\00:16:16.87 as the only one that can offer us salvation. 00:16:16.91\00:16:19.77 And He's bringing this to the Jews, 00:16:19.81\00:16:22.08 who have begun to consider the sacrifices 00:16:22.11\00:16:25.38 as having properties of salvation 00:16:25.41\00:16:28.22 that the sacrifices could save us. 00:16:28.25\00:16:29.88 No, it is Jesus Christ that sacrifice will save us. 00:16:29.92\00:16:33.19 Acts 4:12, says, 00:16:33.22\00:16:34.69 "Neither is there salvation in any other. 00:16:34.72\00:16:38.16 For there's none other name under heaven given among men, 00:16:38.19\00:16:42.16 whereby we must be saved." 00:16:42.20\00:16:44.83 Salvation is only through Jesus Christ. 00:16:44.87\00:16:48.37 Now notice, here in Hebrews 9:13-15, 00:16:48.40\00:16:53.34 because for a period of time, 00:16:53.38\00:16:57.45 the children of the Lord were to offer sacrifices, 00:16:57.48\00:17:01.15 as a symbol of the sacrifice that Jesus would do for us. 00:17:01.18\00:17:05.19 And these animals, of course, they were, 00:17:05.22\00:17:09.76 there's a difference, these animals were selected, 00:17:09.79\00:17:12.43 they had to be without spot or blemish, 00:17:12.46\00:17:16.06 or anything that would disqualify them 00:17:16.10\00:17:20.74 because Jesus Christ had to live a perfect life 00:17:20.77\00:17:22.90 and these animals had to be in perfect condition 00:17:22.94\00:17:25.51 to symbolize Jesus. 00:17:25.54\00:17:27.34 Notice here beginning of 13, Hebrews Chapter 9, 00:17:27.38\00:17:30.75 "For if the blood of bulls and goats, 00:17:30.78\00:17:33.01 and the ashes of a heifer, 00:17:33.05\00:17:34.68 sprinkling the unclean, 00:17:34.72\00:17:36.45 sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 00:17:36.48\00:17:39.12 how much more shall the blood of Christ 00:17:39.15\00:17:43.12 who through the eternal Spirit," 00:17:43.16\00:17:45.33 notice how He calls this text, 00:17:45.36\00:17:48.03 identifies the Holy Spirit as the eternal Spirit, 00:17:48.06\00:17:50.50 "offered Himself," notice, "without spot to God, 00:17:50.53\00:17:54.70 cleanse your conscience 00:17:54.74\00:17:56.77 from dead works to serve the living God." 00:17:56.81\00:18:00.01 And for this reason, 00:18:00.04\00:18:01.38 and I highlight for this reason, 00:18:01.41\00:18:03.14 He is the mediator of the New Covenant 00:18:03.18\00:18:07.65 by means of death, 00:18:07.68\00:18:09.42 for the redemption of the transgression 00:18:09.45\00:18:11.49 under the first covenant. 00:18:11.52\00:18:13.89 And when it says under the first covenant, 00:18:13.92\00:18:16.06 it's identifying the earlier covenant 00:18:16.09\00:18:19.06 that God made with the people of Israel. 00:18:19.09\00:18:21.53 That is the Mosaic Covenant that those, 00:18:21.56\00:18:24.60 the verse continues, 00:18:24.63\00:18:25.97 that those who are called may receive the promise 00:18:26.00\00:18:29.00 of the eternal inheritance. 00:18:29.04\00:18:31.27 My brothers and sisters, friends, 00:18:31.31\00:18:32.71 there's an eternal inheritance 00:18:32.74\00:18:35.14 that is made available to us through Jesus Christ, 00:18:35.18\00:18:38.48 the one sacrifice for all, 00:18:38.51\00:18:41.52 the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ, 00:18:41.55\00:18:45.09 the only way to the Father is through Jesus Christ. 00:18:45.12\00:18:47.42 And please understand that salvation 00:18:47.46\00:18:49.82 is by grace through faith, 00:18:49.86\00:18:53.26 by grace through faith. 00:18:53.29\00:18:55.76 And there has only been only one way to have salvation. 00:18:55.80\00:18:59.53 From the beginning of time since Adam, 00:18:59.57\00:19:01.37 there's only been one way. 00:19:01.40\00:19:03.41 The animal sacrifices were only a symbol 00:19:03.44\00:19:06.27 of the Lamb of God 00:19:06.31\00:19:07.88 who takes away the sin of the world. 00:19:07.91\00:19:11.41 They were a shadow, they were a symbol 00:19:11.45\00:19:13.78 that all pointed to Jesus Christ, 00:19:13.82\00:19:16.42 His atoning sacrifice on the cross. 00:19:16.45\00:19:20.36 And so there's an interesting concept, 00:19:20.39\00:19:22.59 the lesson brings out, 00:19:22.62\00:19:23.96 that in the Old Testament theology 00:19:23.99\00:19:25.96 is that the promised Davidic King 00:19:25.99\00:19:28.20 would represent the nation before God. 00:19:28.23\00:19:30.90 And let's go into that rather quickly 00:19:30.93\00:19:33.37 because my time is speeding for some reason. 00:19:33.40\00:19:36.60 Exodus 4:22-23 brings out this, 00:19:36.64\00:19:41.54 "Then you shall say to Pharaoh, 00:19:41.58\00:19:43.18 'Thus says the Lord: 00:19:43.21\00:19:44.75 'Israel is My son, My firstborn. 00:19:44.78\00:19:48.88 So I say to you, let My son go that he may serve Me." 00:19:48.92\00:19:53.92 You see, God adopted the nation of Israel as their firstborn, 00:19:53.96\00:19:58.73 and they were to be representatives of God on earth 00:19:58.76\00:20:01.73 to help other nations understand 00:20:01.76\00:20:04.27 how God would bless those that serve Him wholeheartedly. 00:20:04.30\00:20:09.80 And so there is covenant language there 00:20:09.84\00:20:12.41 preeminence, 00:20:12.44\00:20:13.78 the covenant Son, the Son of God, 00:20:13.81\00:20:17.18 would be coming through the nation of Israel. 00:20:17.21\00:20:20.75 And this is why you see all those begets, 00:20:20.78\00:20:23.45 you know, all those begets are there only to identify 00:20:23.49\00:20:27.69 the lineage of the Son of God, 00:20:27.72\00:20:29.86 and that is Jesus Christ, 00:20:29.89\00:20:31.46 and that He was born of the Seed of David. 00:20:31.49\00:20:35.23 Now let's go to 2 Samuel 7:12-14, 00:20:35.26\00:20:39.30 God's speaking to David says, 00:20:39.33\00:20:42.07 "When your days are fulfilled, 00:20:42.10\00:20:44.74 and you rest with your fathers, 00:20:44.77\00:20:47.01 I will set up your seat after you 00:20:47.04\00:20:50.98 who will come from your body, 00:20:51.01\00:20:54.38 and I will establish His kingdom, 00:20:54.42\00:20:57.02 He shall build a house for my name, 00:20:57.05\00:20:59.29 and I will establish the throne of His kingdom forever. 00:20:59.32\00:21:03.99 I will be His father and He shall be my son." 00:21:04.03\00:21:07.36 So there in John Chapter 1, it says, 00:21:07.40\00:21:11.90 "And the Word was with God, 00:21:11.93\00:21:14.07 and the Word was God." 00:21:14.10\00:21:15.67 But eventually the Word that was God would become 00:21:15.70\00:21:19.44 a Son of God would become flesh, 00:21:19.47\00:21:22.34 and would be adopted as God's Son." 00:21:22.38\00:21:25.85 The Davidic Covenant secured God's covenant 00:21:25.88\00:21:27.98 blessings upon Israel through faithfulness of one person, 00:21:28.02\00:21:31.85 that is the Davidic King, Jesus Christ. 00:21:31.89\00:21:35.69 Now the lesson brings out some very interesting things. 00:21:35.72\00:21:39.16 It says, these promises for Israel 00:21:39.19\00:21:41.20 will now be fulfilled, 00:21:41.23\00:21:43.20 through the Promised Davidic King. 00:21:43.23\00:21:45.97 The people of Israel failed, but Jesus Christ did not fail. 00:21:46.00\00:21:50.37 He was victorious, 00:21:50.41\00:21:52.14 and He would be adopted as God's Son, 00:21:52.17\00:21:54.28 and God would give Him rest from His enemies. 00:21:54.31\00:21:56.71 And it says, and He would build a temple for God in Zion, 00:21:56.75\00:21:59.88 where God's name would dwell. 00:21:59.91\00:22:02.58 This means that God 00:22:02.62\00:22:04.15 would fulfill His promises to Israel, 00:22:04.19\00:22:06.79 through the promised Davidic King. 00:22:06.82\00:22:09.82 The Davidic King, of course, is Jesus. 00:22:09.86\00:22:12.39 The Davidic King would represent 00:22:12.43\00:22:13.86 Israel before God. 00:22:13.90\00:22:15.36 And this is what the lesson brings out, 00:22:15.40\00:22:16.90 and is very, very interesting 00:22:16.93\00:22:19.03 to consider that Jesus Christ is the Prophet, 00:22:19.07\00:22:24.04 Priest, King, He is the sacrifice, 00:22:24.07\00:22:26.34 He is the priest, 00:22:26.37\00:22:27.71 and He is the mediator for God's people. 00:22:27.74\00:22:30.51 So our ultimate salvation of hope 00:22:30.55\00:22:32.68 is found only in Jesus Christ, 00:22:32.71\00:22:35.85 and what He has done for us. 00:22:35.88\00:22:38.72 So I encourage you to do as John the Baptist said, 00:22:38.75\00:22:42.86 "Behold, the Lamb of God that takes away 00:22:42.89\00:22:45.69 the sin of the world." 00:22:45.73\00:22:47.06 It is through Jesus Christ, 00:22:47.10\00:22:48.63 the mediator between God and man, 00:22:48.66\00:22:50.73 that we have our salvation. 00:22:50.77\00:22:52.93 And so as we go through the Book of Hebrews, 00:22:52.97\00:22:55.80 things will unfold in a beautiful way 00:22:55.84\00:22:58.64 that I want to encourage you to consider Jesus. 00:22:58.67\00:23:01.61 Consider Him because He is our Savior. 00:23:01.64\00:23:04.75 And I want to bring out something here 00:23:04.78\00:23:07.22 because sometimes this is confusing to people. 00:23:07.25\00:23:09.98 And in Jesus Christ, the nature of God, 00:23:10.02\00:23:14.82 and the nature of man was mysteriously blended. 00:23:14.86\00:23:18.36 He was God and He was man. 00:23:18.39\00:23:21.93 And this scripture that I read earlier 00:23:21.96\00:23:25.53 brings out something powerful. 00:23:25.57\00:23:27.94 It says here, again, and for this reason, 00:23:27.97\00:23:31.21 He is the mediator of the New Covenant 00:23:31.24\00:23:32.71 that by means of death, 00:23:32.74\00:23:34.38 it is the death of Jesus Christ and His resurrection 00:23:34.41\00:23:39.38 that makes it possible for Him to become our mediator. 00:23:39.41\00:23:43.15 Had He not lived a perfect life, 00:23:43.18\00:23:46.02 had He not been a perfect sacrifice, 00:23:46.05\00:23:49.16 He could not be our mediator. 00:23:49.19\00:23:50.96 But Jesus, the Book of Hebrews 00:23:50.99\00:23:52.86 brings this out that Jesus Christ 00:23:52.89\00:23:55.10 became our mediator 00:23:55.13\00:23:56.93 because He was the perfect sacrifice 00:23:56.97\00:23:59.17 for our sins. 00:23:59.20\00:24:00.54 And therefore, in Hebrews Chapter 4, 00:24:00.57\00:24:02.00 it brings out let us therefore 00:24:02.04\00:24:03.81 boldly come before His throne of grace. 00:24:03.84\00:24:07.54 Amen. Amen. 00:24:07.58\00:24:08.91 So we have one mediator, and that is Jesus Christ, 00:24:08.94\00:24:13.18 and we have one God, 00:24:13.21\00:24:15.02 and that God was manifested through Jesus Christ. 00:24:15.05\00:24:17.65 So that's the message of Hebrews so far, 00:24:17.69\00:24:19.02 that's what we've learned. 00:24:19.05\00:24:20.39 Don't go away. 00:24:20.42\00:24:21.76 We're going to be right back to discover more 00:24:21.79\00:24:23.12 about this beautiful message. 00:24:23.16\00:24:24.49 Amen. 00:24:24.53\00:24:25.86 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:29.73\00:24:31.07 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:24:31.10\00:24:33.13 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:25:45.77\00:25:48.58 And how were these wishes fulfilled in Jesus? 00:25:48.61\00:25:52.65 So let's go back to 1 Samuel 8:19-20. 00:25:52.68\00:25:56.52 Those will be the verses we read starting out here. 00:25:56.55\00:25:58.59 But, of course, if you've read the background 00:25:58.62\00:26:00.99 of what's happening here, 00:26:01.02\00:26:02.36 in 1 Samuel Chapter 8, 00:26:02.39\00:26:03.73 the people come to Samuel the prophet and say, 00:26:03.76\00:26:05.09 "You know what? 00:26:05.13\00:26:06.46 We want our own king. 00:26:06.49\00:26:07.83 We don't want God to be our king anymore." 00:26:07.86\00:26:09.20 Previous to this, God was their king, 00:26:09.23\00:26:11.00 God was their ruler, but they got to a point 00:26:11.03\00:26:13.40 where their hearts had become hardened, 00:26:13.44\00:26:15.27 they were drifting away from the Lord, 00:26:15.30\00:26:17.14 and now they wanted to put a man 00:26:17.17\00:26:19.31 in place for their king 00:26:19.34\00:26:20.68 and, of course, you know, a case can be made here 00:26:20.71\00:26:23.01 that this is what attributed to the spiritual decline 00:26:23.04\00:26:25.61 and fall of Israel's future in the future. 00:26:25.65\00:26:29.32 But we see here in the latter verses 00:26:29.35\00:26:31.62 of 1 Samuel Chapter 8. 00:26:31.65\00:26:32.99 We're going to read verses 19 and 20. 00:26:33.02\00:26:34.42 And notice what the people are saying to Samuel, 00:26:34.46\00:26:36.93 now that Samuel has come to them, 00:26:36.96\00:26:38.29 he's warned them, 00:26:38.33\00:26:39.66 he shared with them the message of God 00:26:39.69\00:26:41.03 of what's going to happen 00:26:41.06\00:26:42.40 if they go about having a human king over them. 00:26:42.43\00:26:46.33 But we see here that it says, it says, "Nevertheless, 00:26:46.37\00:26:48.84 the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel, 00:26:48.87\00:26:52.27 and they said, 'No, 00:26:52.31\00:26:54.54 but we will have a king over us, 00:26:54.58\00:26:57.01 that we also may be like the other nations, 00:26:57.05\00:27:00.82 and that our king may judge us 00:27:00.85\00:27:02.85 and go out before us and fight our battles." 00:27:02.88\00:27:06.86 Okay. 00:27:06.89\00:27:08.22 So you know, there's nothing wrong 00:27:08.26\00:27:09.59 with wanting to have a king 00:27:09.62\00:27:10.96 that will be judge over you, 00:27:10.99\00:27:12.33 and fight your battles. 00:27:12.36\00:27:13.70 But hopefully, we want God to be our king over us. 00:27:13.73\00:27:15.76 Only God is the judge. 00:27:15.80\00:27:17.20 And that is what they were missing. 00:27:17.23\00:27:18.57 They wanted a man to be over them. 00:27:18.60\00:27:20.37 But obviously the writer of this lesson 00:27:20.40\00:27:22.97 is comparing that to Hebrews Chapter 2, 00:27:23.00\00:27:25.97 in which Christ would ultimately come along, 00:27:26.01\00:27:28.68 and He would fulfill that in the flesh as man 00:27:28.71\00:27:32.05 and also as king of the universe. 00:27:32.08\00:27:33.75 Notice Hebrews 2:14-16. 00:27:33.78\00:27:36.92 These are some famous verses 00:27:36.95\00:27:38.55 talking about how Christ came down. 00:27:38.59\00:27:40.66 He was robed in flesh, He became like one of us. 00:27:40.69\00:27:42.99 Notice Hebrews 2:14-16. 00:27:43.02\00:27:46.56 It says, "Inasmuch 00:27:46.59\00:27:48.80 then as the children have partaken 00:27:48.83\00:27:51.20 of flesh and blood, 00:27:51.23\00:27:52.90 He Himself likewise shared in the same, 00:27:52.93\00:27:56.04 that through death He might destroy him 00:27:56.07\00:27:58.37 who had the power of death, 00:27:58.41\00:28:00.21 that is, the devil, 00:28:00.24\00:28:01.98 and release those who through fear of death 00:28:02.01\00:28:05.45 were all their lifetime subject to bondage." 00:28:05.48\00:28:09.28 And then verse 16, "For indeed He does not..." 00:28:09.32\00:28:11.75 And this is the New King James Version 00:28:11.79\00:28:13.12 I'm reading here. 00:28:13.15\00:28:14.49 "For indeed He does not give aid to angels, 00:28:14.52\00:28:16.73 but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham." 00:28:16.76\00:28:20.46 I like that in the sense 00:28:20.50\00:28:21.83 that it's pointing out the fact 00:28:21.86\00:28:23.20 that Christ humbled Himself as Philippians Chapter 2 says, 00:28:23.23\00:28:27.14 "He thought it not robbery to be equal with God," right? 00:28:27.17\00:28:30.84 "He did not want to be equal to God 00:28:30.87\00:28:32.64 but came down to rob Himself in human flesh, 00:28:32.67\00:28:35.81 that He might be one of us 00:28:35.84\00:28:37.45 and might redeem us from the works of sin." 00:28:37.48\00:28:40.15 Now that was the New King James Version. 00:28:40.18\00:28:41.85 I also like to read the King James Version, 00:28:41.88\00:28:44.79 translation of verse 16, 00:28:44.82\00:28:46.62 because notice, it really puts in perspective. 00:28:46.65\00:28:48.82 It says, "For verily He took not on Him 00:28:48.86\00:28:51.13 the nature of angels, 00:28:51.16\00:28:53.63 but He took on Him the seed of Abraham." 00:28:53.66\00:28:57.00 How would Christ come 00:28:57.03\00:28:58.57 to become our champion of the world? 00:28:58.60\00:29:01.37 How would He be our champion to come to save us from sin? 00:29:01.40\00:29:05.01 Notice, He's not coming from heaven 00:29:05.04\00:29:06.68 with all of the unfallen perfect divine nature, 00:29:06.71\00:29:10.35 of course, as we mentioned earlier, 00:29:10.38\00:29:11.71 was a blended nature. 00:29:11.75\00:29:13.08 But at the end of the day, my friends, 00:29:13.11\00:29:14.52 Christ took fallen human flesh, 00:29:14.55\00:29:16.79 He robed Himself, He was robed in flesh, 00:29:16.82\00:29:19.09 He grew up, He was tempted in all ways, like we were. 00:29:19.12\00:29:22.72 He became our champion, 00:29:22.76\00:29:24.23 because we can look to Him and say, 00:29:24.26\00:29:25.66 "Yes, Jesus understands." 00:29:25.69\00:29:28.06 I mean, history is flooded with stories 00:29:28.10\00:29:31.03 of religions from all over the world, 00:29:31.07\00:29:33.03 pagan false religions all over the world 00:29:33.07\00:29:35.04 that tells the story of how man wanted to be God. 00:29:35.07\00:29:38.51 But the beautiful thing about the Christian story 00:29:38.54\00:29:41.08 is we see that Christianity is a story about 00:29:41.11\00:29:43.38 how God became man so that He could save His people. 00:29:43.41\00:29:46.92 What a champion, right? 00:29:46.95\00:29:48.28 Jesus, our champion. It gets me excited. 00:29:48.32\00:29:50.49 I used to be a huge basketball fan 00:29:50.52\00:29:52.49 back in the day. 00:29:52.52\00:29:53.86 I still like to take in a good basketball game 00:29:53.89\00:29:55.66 every once in a while. 00:29:55.69\00:29:57.03 But, I mean, I used to be, 00:29:57.06\00:29:58.39 you know, completely wrapped up in basketball. 00:29:58.43\00:30:00.13 I was a huge Los Angeles Lakers fan. 00:30:00.16\00:30:02.60 And, you know, there was a history, 00:30:02.63\00:30:04.10 if you know anything about the history of the NBA 00:30:04.13\00:30:05.87 and the World Championship Basketball, 00:30:05.90\00:30:07.44 then you know that for years, 00:30:07.47\00:30:09.00 the Boston Celtics seemed to be the champions, 00:30:09.04\00:30:11.67 the reigning champions of the world. 00:30:11.71\00:30:13.31 They always, seemed to always find a way to win, 00:30:13.34\00:30:15.81 and there's always the struggle. 00:30:15.84\00:30:17.31 But back in the days when I was younger 00:30:17.35\00:30:19.71 before my Christian devout days to Christ, 00:30:19.75\00:30:22.58 you know, I was huge Lakers fan. 00:30:22.62\00:30:24.29 And, you know, we were looking for a man 00:30:24.32\00:30:26.12 to step up to the plate to help lead 00:30:26.15\00:30:27.52 the Los Angeles Lakers to the World Championship 00:30:27.56\00:30:30.29 to defeat these Boston Celtics. 00:30:30.33\00:30:32.06 Well, that happened in 2010. 00:30:32.09\00:30:34.53 And our champion that year was a man 00:30:34.56\00:30:36.23 by the name of Kobe Bryant. 00:30:36.26\00:30:37.93 Kobe Bryant stepped up to the plate, 00:30:37.97\00:30:39.37 he became the champion 00:30:39.40\00:30:40.74 and I was just so amazed by how he played, 00:30:40.77\00:30:42.87 how great he was. 00:30:42.90\00:30:44.24 I had Kobe hats and Kobe jerseys 00:30:44.27\00:30:46.07 and Kobe shoes and my bedsheets 00:30:46.11\00:30:49.04 were Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant. 00:30:49.08\00:30:50.98 I was such a huge basketball fan. 00:30:51.01\00:30:52.95 But my friends, you know, all of us have our heroes, 00:30:52.98\00:30:55.25 we have those peoples we look forward to, 00:30:55.28\00:30:57.32 whether it be a sports star, 00:30:57.35\00:30:58.72 whatever it may be, 00:30:58.75\00:31:00.09 that we see as champions as heroes, 00:31:00.12\00:31:01.66 as people we look up to. 00:31:01.69\00:31:03.02 But at the end of the day, 00:31:03.06\00:31:04.39 is anybody really going to even come close to Jesus Christ? 00:31:04.43\00:31:07.06 Kobe Bryant didn't save me from my sins. 00:31:07.10\00:31:08.90 And when Jesus Christ grabbed a hold of my heart, 00:31:08.93\00:31:12.80 and showed me who He really was, 00:31:12.83\00:31:15.24 I changed my perspective, 00:31:15.27\00:31:17.01 the world began to grow dimmer, 00:31:17.04\00:31:18.84 and I begin to see God for who He really was. 00:31:18.87\00:31:21.51 David, like David was the hero 00:31:21.54\00:31:23.98 and the champion for Israel in the days 00:31:24.01\00:31:26.08 that he slayed Goliath 00:31:26.11\00:31:27.45 because Goliath represented the enemy, 00:31:27.48\00:31:30.09 he represented the enemy's plans, the enemy's, 00:31:30.12\00:31:32.95 you know, chains of sin, and an oppression 00:31:32.99\00:31:35.32 that he wanted to bring upon the children of Israel. 00:31:35.36\00:31:37.59 David stepped up as a man after God's own heart, 00:31:37.63\00:31:41.03 and he slayed Goliath. 00:31:41.06\00:31:42.46 And Jesus is, of course, David is a type of Christ, 00:31:42.50\00:31:45.03 but Jesus Christ is our champion. 00:31:45.07\00:31:47.60 I love Isaiah 42:13, it says, 00:31:47.64\00:31:50.57 "The Lord shall go forth like a mighty man." 00:31:50.61\00:31:53.78 I love that. 00:31:53.81\00:31:55.14 "He shall stir up his zeal, like a man of war, 00:31:55.18\00:31:58.11 He shall cry out, yes, shout aloud, 00:31:58.15\00:32:01.02 He shall prevail against His enemies." 00:32:01.05\00:32:04.02 You know what? 00:32:04.05\00:32:05.39 We may have our heroes here and there that give us, 00:32:05.42\00:32:07.39 you know, some excitement 00:32:07.42\00:32:08.76 from whatever ballgame might be playing 00:32:08.79\00:32:10.83 or whatever event we might be at. 00:32:10.86\00:32:12.29 But at the end of the day, Jesus Christ is the champion 00:32:12.33\00:32:15.66 that saves the human race. 00:32:15.70\00:32:17.87 At the end of the day, when this world is passed away, 00:32:17.90\00:32:20.17 we're going to be looking to Him saying, 00:32:20.20\00:32:21.60 "Thank you, oh, God, for saving us from our sins, 00:32:21.64\00:32:25.34 that we might have eternal life in You." 00:32:25.37\00:32:28.01 Another great passage is Isaiah 59, 00:32:28.04\00:32:30.38 which really highlights the beautifulness 00:32:30.41\00:32:33.21 of how God comes down to bring us righteousness. 00:32:33.25\00:32:36.85 And, of course, Isaiah 59:15-20, 00:32:36.89\00:32:39.29 I'll read that quickly here. 00:32:39.32\00:32:40.66 It says, so truth fails. 00:32:40.69\00:32:42.19 And, of course, when it says truth fails, 00:32:42.22\00:32:43.56 it's talking in context of the children of Israel, 00:32:43.59\00:32:46.13 who had allowed oppression, 00:32:46.16\00:32:47.60 who had forsaken the ways of God, 00:32:47.63\00:32:49.40 and they had basically forsaken the truth of God. 00:32:49.43\00:32:51.73 And so it goes on to say, 00:32:51.77\00:32:53.10 "And he who departs from evil makes himself a prey." 00:32:53.13\00:32:56.44 And notice here, it says, "Then the Lord saw it, 00:32:56.47\00:32:59.47 and it displeased Him that there was no justice." 00:32:59.51\00:33:02.61 You see, we serve a God of justice, 00:33:02.64\00:33:04.65 our champion, Jesus is a God of justice. 00:33:04.68\00:33:08.08 And so it goes on to say in verse 16, 00:33:08.12\00:33:10.12 "He saw that there was no man, 00:33:10.15\00:33:12.45 and wondered that there was no intercessor, 00:33:12.49\00:33:15.49 therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him, 00:33:15.52\00:33:18.96 and His own righteousness, it sustained Him. 00:33:18.99\00:33:22.36 For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, 00:33:22.40\00:33:25.70 and a helmet of salvation on His head, 00:33:25.73\00:33:28.60 He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, 00:33:28.64\00:33:31.67 and was clad with zeal as a cloak. 00:33:31.71\00:33:35.11 According to their deeds, accordingly He will repay, fury 00:33:35.14\00:33:38.75 to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies, 00:33:38.78\00:33:42.15 the coastlands He will fully repay. 00:33:42.18\00:33:44.89 So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, 00:33:44.92\00:33:48.26 and His glory from the rising of the sun, 00:33:48.29\00:33:50.83 when the enemy comes in like a flood, 00:33:50.86\00:33:54.13 the Spirit of the Lord will lift up 00:33:54.16\00:33:56.43 a standard against him. 00:33:56.46\00:33:58.13 The Redeemer will come to Zion," 00:33:58.17\00:34:00.24 I love this, "and to those 00:34:00.27\00:34:01.64 who turn from transgression in Jacob, says the Lord." 00:34:01.67\00:34:05.61 My friends, Jesus is our champion. 00:34:05.64\00:34:08.64 At the end of the day, 00:34:08.68\00:34:10.01 He is the champion of the world. 00:34:10.05\00:34:11.38 The lesson brings this out and I have to highlight this. 00:34:11.41\00:34:14.28 It says, "As Christians, we often think 00:34:14.32\00:34:17.15 that we are engaged in solo combat with Satan." 00:34:17.19\00:34:20.22 I think all of us have been in that sense. 00:34:20.26\00:34:21.59 Yeah. 00:34:21.62\00:34:22.96 But when we read Ephesians 6:10-18, 00:34:22.99\00:34:26.29 we see that, yes, 00:34:26.33\00:34:27.66 we are in combat with the devil, 00:34:27.70\00:34:29.60 but God is our champion, 00:34:29.63\00:34:31.67 and He goes to battle before us. 00:34:31.70\00:34:34.60 We are part of His army. 00:34:34.64\00:34:37.21 That is why we have to use His armor, 00:34:37.24\00:34:40.38 not our own armor, right? 00:34:40.41\00:34:42.24 Also, we do not fight alone. 00:34:42.28\00:34:45.01 That you in Ephesians 6 is plural. 00:34:45.05\00:34:49.38 We as a church take the armor and fight together 00:34:49.42\00:34:52.59 behind our champion, 00:34:52.62\00:34:54.92 who is God Himself. 00:34:54.96\00:34:56.79 My friends, you don't have to fight your battles alone. 00:34:56.83\00:34:58.83 Amen. 00:34:58.86\00:35:00.20 In fact, you cannot win the battles 00:35:00.23\00:35:02.20 in and of yourself and by yourself. 00:35:02.23\00:35:03.93 Allow Jesus Christ to be your champion. 00:35:03.97\00:35:06.80 Jesus has already won the war. 00:35:06.84\00:35:09.07 He's already taken this world back. 00:35:09.10\00:35:10.74 It is His. 00:35:10.77\00:35:12.11 Allow Jesus Christ today to be your champion, 00:35:12.14\00:35:14.58 the champion of your life. 00:35:14.61\00:35:16.08 Amen. 00:35:16.11\00:35:17.45 Thank you so much, Pastor Ryan, I love that. 00:35:17.48\00:35:19.85 I love your energy and enthusiasm 00:35:19.88\00:35:21.98 for the Word of God. 00:35:22.02\00:35:23.59 I've been blessed by what everyone shared. 00:35:23.62\00:35:25.52 Jesus is our King. 00:35:25.55\00:35:27.12 He is our mediator. He is our champion. 00:35:27.16\00:35:29.89 And I have Wednesday's lesson, Jesus is Our High Priest. 00:35:29.92\00:35:34.16 And to me, that's the overarching theme 00:35:34.20\00:35:37.17 of the Book of Hebrews. 00:35:37.20\00:35:38.53 We see, of course, Jesus as King, 00:35:38.57\00:35:40.30 Jesus seated at the right hand of the Father, 00:35:40.34\00:35:42.77 Jesus as mediator, 00:35:42.80\00:35:44.14 but Jesus as our High Priest. 00:35:44.17\00:35:47.24 So I'm going to hopefully we'll get through all this, 00:35:47.28\00:35:49.78 I want to look at seven functions 00:35:49.81\00:35:52.68 of the Old Testament Levitical priesthood. 00:35:52.71\00:35:56.08 Seven duties, seven obligations, 00:35:56.12\00:35:58.32 seven functions that they were involved in, 00:35:58.35\00:36:00.89 and we're going to compare them with seven ways 00:36:00.92\00:36:04.33 that Jesus fulfilled that even better. 00:36:04.36\00:36:07.90 So let's take a look at that Jesus as our High Priest. 00:36:07.93\00:36:10.97 This is the seven functions or duties, 00:36:11.00\00:36:14.04 obligations of the Levitical priesthood. 00:36:14.07\00:36:16.14 Now, I'm sure there's more, 00:36:16.17\00:36:17.51 we're just going to cover seven. 00:36:17.54\00:36:18.87 Number one, to offer sacrifices to God 00:36:18.91\00:36:22.48 on behalf of sinful humanity. 00:36:22.51\00:36:26.08 Function number one, offer sacrifices to God 00:36:26.11\00:36:29.45 on behalf of sinful humanity. 00:36:29.48\00:36:31.39 If you look at Hebrews 5:1, we see this, 00:36:31.42\00:36:34.12 "For every high priest taken from among men 00:36:34.16\00:36:37.19 is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, 00:36:37.23\00:36:40.23 that He may offer both gifts and sacrifices," why? 00:36:40.26\00:36:44.53 "For sins." 00:36:44.57\00:36:46.03 Offering those sacrifices on behalf of sinful humanity. 00:36:46.07\00:36:50.31 If you look at the Old Testament, 00:36:50.34\00:36:51.67 the Book of Leviticus we see five major offerings. 00:36:51.71\00:36:55.68 Leviticus 1 is the burnt offering. 00:36:55.71\00:36:58.08 And we see Christ's fulfilling that, 00:36:58.11\00:37:00.85 His life being consumed. 00:37:00.88\00:37:02.75 Leviticus 2 is the grain offering, 00:37:02.78\00:37:04.69 there's no death in that. 00:37:04.72\00:37:06.22 We see Christ providing eternal life. 00:37:06.25\00:37:09.89 Leviticus 3 and 7, we see the peace offering, 00:37:09.92\00:37:13.43 or the offer partook in 8 of the sacrifice as well. 00:37:13.46\00:37:18.73 This is where you and I are called 00:37:18.77\00:37:20.24 to spiritually partake of Christ. 00:37:20.27\00:37:23.14 In Leviticus 4 and 6, we see the sin offering 00:37:23.17\00:37:25.61 or the purification offering, 00:37:25.64\00:37:27.91 and we see Christ given as the ransom for our life. 00:37:27.94\00:37:32.31 In Leviticus 5 and 7 we see the trespass, 00:37:32.35\00:37:35.42 the reparation offering, 00:37:35.45\00:37:37.42 and we see Christ's pain, the debt of sin. 00:37:37.45\00:37:41.52 Let's look at function or obligation number two. 00:37:41.56\00:37:44.29 The priests were to intercede for the people. 00:37:44.33\00:37:48.23 Leviticus 16:12-13. 00:37:48.26\00:37:52.27 Leviticus 16:12-13. 00:37:52.30\00:37:54.67 "He, this is Aaron as the high priest, 00:37:54.70\00:37:57.44 shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire 00:37:57.47\00:38:00.61 from the altar before the Lord, 00:38:00.64\00:38:02.31 with his hands full of sweet incense beaten fine 00:38:02.34\00:38:05.01 and bring it inside the veil. 00:38:05.05\00:38:07.45 He shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord 00:38:07.48\00:38:09.85 that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat 00:38:09.88\00:38:13.52 that is on the testimony, lest he die." 00:38:13.56\00:38:15.99 So the high priest was to intercede 00:38:16.02\00:38:19.43 for the people. 00:38:19.46\00:38:21.03 Number three, the high priest was to mediate 00:38:21.06\00:38:23.87 between God and sinful humanity. 00:38:23.90\00:38:26.23 Now this is very similar to the intercession. 00:38:26.27\00:38:28.70 We're still in Leviticus 16, we see verses 16 and 17. 00:38:28.74\00:38:32.71 "So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, 00:38:32.74\00:38:36.98 because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, 00:38:37.01\00:38:39.48 and because of their transgressions 00:38:39.51\00:38:40.85 for all their sins, 00:38:40.88\00:38:42.22 he shall do so for the tabernacle of meeting 00:38:42.25\00:38:44.22 which remains among them 00:38:44.25\00:38:45.59 in the midst of their uncleanness. 00:38:45.62\00:38:47.99 There shall no man in the tabernacle of meeting 00:38:48.02\00:38:50.43 when he goes in 00:38:50.46\00:38:51.79 to make atonement in the Holy Place, 00:38:51.83\00:38:53.36 until he comes out, 00:38:53.40\00:38:55.26 that he may make atonement for himself, 00:38:55.30\00:38:58.13 for his household, 00:38:58.17\00:38:59.50 and for all the assembly of Israel." 00:38:59.53\00:39:02.40 We see this mediatorial role between God and humanity. 00:39:02.44\00:39:07.48 We also see number four, that the priesthood, 00:39:07.51\00:39:09.71 the Levitical priesthood was hereditary, 00:39:09.74\00:39:12.75 passed down from father to son. 00:39:12.78\00:39:15.92 We see this in Deuteronomy Chapter 18. 00:39:15.95\00:39:18.22 Number five, we see that the Levitical priests 00:39:18.25\00:39:20.76 were to serve in holiness. 00:39:20.79\00:39:23.86 Leviticus 21: 6 says, 00:39:23.89\00:39:26.49 "The priest shall be holy to the Lord their God." 00:39:26.53\00:39:30.40 Verse 7, "The priest is holy to his God." 00:39:30.43\00:39:34.67 Verse 8, "He shall be holy to you, 00:39:34.70\00:39:37.64 for I the Lord who sanctify you I'm holy." 00:39:37.67\00:39:41.28 Number six, we see that the Levitical priesthood 00:39:41.31\00:39:44.05 was to bless the people. 00:39:44.08\00:39:46.15 I love this blessing in number six. 00:39:46.18\00:39:48.15 This is similar you could say 00:39:48.18\00:39:49.55 the Lord's Prayer for the Old Testament. 00:39:49.58\00:39:51.82 Leviticus 6:23-27, 00:39:51.85\00:39:54.16 "Speak to Aaron and his sons saying, 00:39:54.19\00:39:56.02 'This is the way you shall bless 00:39:56.06\00:39:58.03 the children of Israel." 00:39:58.06\00:39:59.69 Say to them and we know this, 00:39:59.73\00:40:01.10 the Lord bless you and keep you, 00:40:01.13\00:40:02.66 you could sing this, Ryan, 00:40:02.70\00:40:04.03 the Lord, make His face shine upon you 00:40:04.07\00:40:05.93 and be gracious to you. 00:40:05.97\00:40:07.77 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you 00:40:07.80\00:40:09.77 and give you peace. 00:40:09.80\00:40:11.47 Finally, number seven, the Levitical priesthood 00:40:11.51\00:40:13.64 was called to teach the people. 00:40:13.68\00:40:16.91 We see this in Malachi 2:7, 00:40:16.95\00:40:18.98 "The lips of a priest should keep knowledge, 00:40:19.01\00:40:22.18 and people should seek the law from his mouth, 00:40:22.22\00:40:25.12 for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts." 00:40:25.15\00:40:28.99 Now we're going to look at Jesus as our High Priest 00:40:29.02\00:40:32.76 and how He fulfilled those seven functions, 00:40:32.79\00:40:36.83 you could say, of the Levitical priesthood. 00:40:36.87\00:40:39.80 To offer sacrifices to God on behalf of Aaron, humans, 00:40:39.83\00:40:42.60 to intercede for the people, 00:40:42.64\00:40:44.27 to mediate between God and sinful humanity. 00:40:44.31\00:40:47.64 We understand the priesthood was hereditary, 00:40:47.68\00:40:49.84 to serve in holiness, 00:40:49.88\00:40:51.21 to bless the people and to teach the people. 00:40:51.25\00:40:53.62 Now also, Jesus not only was the function 00:40:53.65\00:40:56.08 of the Levitical priesthood, 00:40:56.12\00:40:57.52 He offered the sacrifice 00:40:57.55\00:40:59.09 to satisfy the demands of the law. 00:40:59.12\00:41:00.76 We also see He was a high priest 00:41:00.79\00:41:03.19 after the order of Melchizedek. 00:41:03.22\00:41:05.33 That's right. 00:41:05.36\00:41:06.70 We will study this more in coming lessons. 00:41:06.73\00:41:08.80 So we really don't have time to get into this now. 00:41:08.83\00:41:11.40 But we do see that Melchizedek was a priest and a king. 00:41:11.43\00:41:15.24 He served in both functions together. 00:41:15.27\00:41:18.67 And we also see that Jesus was not of the tribe of Levi 00:41:18.71\00:41:23.68 like the Levitical priests. 00:41:23.71\00:41:25.38 In that sense He follows 00:41:25.41\00:41:26.78 after the order of Melchizedek, as well. 00:41:26.82\00:41:29.52 So let's look at this comparison. 00:41:29.55\00:41:30.95 Number one, Jesus offers a better sacrifice 00:41:30.99\00:41:35.26 than the Levitical priests. 00:41:35.29\00:41:37.33 Why? He became the sacrifice. 00:41:37.36\00:41:40.06 Hebrews 7:26-27, 00:41:40.10\00:41:43.57 "For such a high priest was fitting for us, 00:41:43.60\00:41:46.94 who is holy, harmless, undefiled, 00:41:46.97\00:41:49.90 separate from sinners, 00:41:49.94\00:41:51.27 and has become higher than the heavens, 00:41:51.31\00:41:53.51 who does not need daily 00:41:53.54\00:41:55.48 as those high priests to offer up sacrifices, 00:41:55.51\00:41:58.68 first for his own sins, 00:41:58.71\00:42:00.05 and then for the sins of the people. 00:42:00.08\00:42:01.82 For this He did once for all when He offered up Himself." 00:42:01.85\00:42:06.86 You see, Jesus didn't need 00:42:06.89\00:42:08.22 to offer sacrifices for Himself. 00:42:08.26\00:42:09.89 He was the perfect sacrifice. 00:42:09.92\00:42:12.53 He didn't need to offer daily sacrifices 00:42:12.56\00:42:14.16 for the people, 00:42:14.20\00:42:15.53 He died once and for all, 00:42:15.56\00:42:17.93 and that death covered the sins of everyone, 00:42:17.97\00:42:21.47 He became the sacrifice. 00:42:21.50\00:42:23.10 Number two, Jesus offers a better intercession 00:42:23.14\00:42:27.11 than the Levitical priesthood. 00:42:27.14\00:42:28.84 He became our intercessor. 00:42:28.88\00:42:32.25 Hebrews 7:25. 00:42:32.28\00:42:34.45 I love this verse. 00:42:34.48\00:42:36.22 He is also able to save to the uttermost. 00:42:36.25\00:42:39.75 That word means He can save completely, 00:42:39.79\00:42:41.99 He saves forever, 00:42:42.02\00:42:43.73 He saves entirely perfectly and through all time, 00:42:43.76\00:42:48.23 He saves us those who come to God through Him, 00:42:48.26\00:42:51.33 because He always lives to make intercession for us. 00:42:51.37\00:42:56.34 That's right. 00:42:56.37\00:42:57.71 Number three, Jesus offers a better mediation 00:42:57.74\00:43:00.81 than the Levitical priesthood, 00:43:00.84\00:43:02.41 because He became our mediator. 00:43:02.44\00:43:05.98 Pastor Johnny read this, I believe earlier, 00:43:06.01\00:43:08.62 1 Timothy 2:5, 00:43:08.65\00:43:10.05 "There is one God and one mediator 00:43:10.09\00:43:12.82 between God and men, 00:43:12.85\00:43:14.69 the Man Christ Jesus." 00:43:14.72\00:43:18.09 Number four, Jesus comes from a better order, 00:43:18.13\00:43:21.06 not the Levitical, but the Melchizedek. 00:43:21.10\00:43:24.23 And we covered this briefly just before. 00:43:24.27\00:43:26.67 If you look at Hebrews 7:3, 00:43:26.70\00:43:29.50 it talks about Melchizedek being without father, 00:43:29.54\00:43:33.48 without mother, without genealogy, 00:43:33.51\00:43:36.88 having neither beginning of days nor end of life, 00:43:36.91\00:43:39.68 but made like the Son of God, 00:43:39.71\00:43:42.08 he remains a priest continually. 00:43:42.12\00:43:45.42 Jesus was not of the tribe of Levi, 00:43:45.45\00:43:48.49 Jesus is a priest forever. 00:43:48.52\00:43:51.59 Number five, Jesus has a better position 00:43:51.63\00:43:53.90 than the Levitical priesthood 00:43:53.93\00:43:55.26 because Jesus was holy, 00:43:55.30\00:43:57.33 without any trace of sin. 00:43:57.37\00:43:59.80 Remember the Levitical priesthood 00:43:59.83\00:44:01.20 were to be holy, 00:44:01.24\00:44:02.57 but Jesus actually was holy. 00:44:02.60\00:44:05.14 Hebrews 4:14-16, 00:44:05.17\00:44:08.58 "Seeing then that we have a great High Priest 00:44:08.61\00:44:10.75 who has passed through the heavens, 00:44:10.78\00:44:12.41 Jesus the Son of God, 00:44:12.45\00:44:14.48 let us hold fast our confession. 00:44:14.52\00:44:16.12 For we do not have a High Priest 00:44:16.15\00:44:17.49 who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, 00:44:17.52\00:44:19.72 but was in all points tempted as we are, 00:44:19.75\00:44:21.96 yet without sin." 00:44:21.99\00:44:24.73 He was perfect. 00:44:24.76\00:44:26.09 He was without sin, 00:44:26.13\00:44:27.46 and yet He can identify with me and my suffering, 00:44:27.50\00:44:31.87 erring sinful state. 00:44:31.90\00:44:34.30 Number six, Jesus offers a better covenant, 00:44:34.34\00:44:37.44 which Pastor John is going to touch on. 00:44:37.47\00:44:39.37 Hebrews 7:32, 00:44:39.41\00:44:41.38 Jesus became the surety of a better covenant. 00:44:41.41\00:44:46.72 And finally, number seven, 00:44:46.75\00:44:48.75 Jesus offers a better sanctuary, 00:44:48.78\00:44:52.32 a heavenly sanctuary. 00:44:52.35\00:44:53.69 We see this in Hebrews Chapter 9. 00:44:53.72\00:44:56.02 So the incredible thing is that we can look to Jesus. 00:44:56.06\00:44:59.89 Jesus is our sacrifice. 00:44:59.93\00:45:02.50 Jesus was our substitute. 00:45:02.53\00:45:05.13 Jesus is our High Priest right now, 00:45:05.17\00:45:08.24 even now, interceding in heaven for us. 00:45:08.27\00:45:11.57 Amen. 00:45:11.61\00:45:12.94 I want to begin by saying after all of you, 00:45:12.97\00:45:15.11 repetition is a good teacher, 00:45:15.14\00:45:17.35 because we're talking about some of the same themes 00:45:17.38\00:45:19.98 all the way through 00:45:20.02\00:45:21.35 how efficacious Jesus is. 00:45:21.38\00:45:23.42 That's why I like the title of mine on Thursday, 00:45:23.45\00:45:25.89 Jesus Mediates a Better Covenant. 00:45:25.92\00:45:29.22 Now, we've covered so much of this, 00:45:29.26\00:45:30.89 and I think that as I said, repetition is a good teacher. 00:45:30.93\00:45:32.99 But let's focus on Hebrews Chapter 8, 00:45:33.03\00:45:35.93 all the way to Hebrews Chapter 10, 00:45:35.96\00:45:37.63 which are, the main focus is the work of Jesus 00:45:37.67\00:45:41.64 as a mediator of a New Covenant. 00:45:41.67\00:45:44.77 The issues with the Old Covenant was that 00:45:44.81\00:45:47.44 it was only a foreshadowing of the good things to come. 00:45:47.48\00:45:50.85 All the articles of furniture, 00:45:50.88\00:45:52.28 all the sacrificial system aspects of it, 00:45:52.31\00:45:54.45 the priesthood, everything included in that 00:45:54.48\00:45:56.72 was simply a shadow of good things to come. 00:45:56.75\00:45:59.09 Paul talks about that in Ephesians, 00:45:59.12\00:46:00.49 and in the Book of Colossians. 00:46:00.52\00:46:02.26 Also, every aspect of it was designed to illustrate 00:46:02.29\00:46:05.99 the work that Jesus would do in His life in the future, 00:46:06.03\00:46:09.40 the water, the laver, the water of life, Jesus, 00:46:09.43\00:46:12.00 the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, 00:46:12.03\00:46:14.27 Christ, the candelabra, the light of the world, 00:46:14.30\00:46:16.64 all aspects of it, the mediatorial work of Christ, 00:46:16.67\00:46:19.37 the altar of incense, 00:46:19.41\00:46:20.74 that He's receiving the prayers of the saints, 00:46:20.78\00:46:23.51 and mediating in their behalf. 00:46:23.55\00:46:25.38 If anyone sins, 00:46:25.41\00:46:26.75 we have an advocate with the Father, 00:46:26.78\00:46:28.32 we have a High Priest, who is mediating, 00:46:28.35\00:46:31.45 He's able to save to the uttermost. 00:46:31.49\00:46:32.99 All the aspects of the sacrificial system 00:46:33.02\00:46:35.69 were a prefiguring, 00:46:35.72\00:46:37.26 an object lesson of the ministry of Christ. 00:46:37.29\00:46:39.89 That's why today we don't look forward 00:46:39.93\00:46:41.90 to the system being reestablished. 00:46:41.93\00:46:44.33 We praise God that it was removed 00:46:44.37\00:46:46.10 in favor of Jesus. 00:46:46.13\00:46:48.07 You also find that the priesthood. 00:46:48.10\00:46:49.84 Let's go to Hebrews Chapter 7, 00:46:49.87\00:46:51.37 I'm going to break down a few things 00:46:51.41\00:46:52.74 and try to do what Jill does. 00:46:52.77\00:46:54.34 She could cover 20 pages in 10 minutes. 00:46:54.38\00:46:56.28 I don't know how she does that. 00:46:56.31\00:46:57.75 But let's talk about the weakness of the priesthood, 00:46:57.78\00:47:00.52 because the priesthood 00:47:00.55\00:47:02.12 of the Levitical priesthood was just a shadow 00:47:02.15\00:47:04.89 of the faultless priesthood of Jesus. 00:47:04.92\00:47:07.29 Hebrews 7:18-9, for on the one hand, 00:47:07.32\00:47:11.29 talking about the faultiness of the priesthood. 00:47:11.33\00:47:14.00 "For on the one hand there is an annulling 00:47:14.03\00:47:16.30 of the former commandment 00:47:16.33\00:47:17.67 because of its weakness and unprofitableness." 00:47:17.70\00:47:20.57 Verse 19, 00:47:20.60\00:47:21.94 "For the law made nothing perfect, 00:47:21.97\00:47:23.91 on the other hand, 00:47:23.94\00:47:25.27 there is the bringing in of a better hope, 00:47:25.31\00:47:27.31 through which we draw near to God." 00:47:27.34\00:47:29.81 How do we draw near to God? 00:47:29.84\00:47:31.28 We draw near to God through Christ Jesus. 00:47:31.31\00:47:33.38 Let's look at verse 20 to 24, 00:47:33.42\00:47:34.92 talking about the perfection of Jesus as priesthood. 00:47:34.95\00:47:38.92 "And inasmuch as He was not made priest 00:47:38.95\00:47:42.22 without an oath, 00:47:42.26\00:47:43.73 for they have become priests without an oath, 00:47:43.76\00:47:46.56 but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: 00:47:46.59\00:47:50.17 'The Lord has sworn and will not relent, 00:47:50.20\00:47:53.13 You are a priest forever 00:47:53.17\00:47:54.87 according to the order of Melchizedek.'" 00:47:54.90\00:47:56.91 Jill just brought that out. 00:47:56.94\00:47:58.27 Verse 22, "By so much more 00:47:58.31\00:48:00.88 Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant." 00:48:00.91\00:48:04.55 Verse 23, "Also there were many priests, 00:48:04.58\00:48:07.28 because they were prevented by death from continuing. 00:48:07.32\00:48:10.92 But He, because He continues forever, 00:48:10.95\00:48:13.99 has an unchangeable priesthood." 00:48:14.02\00:48:16.29 Praise God for that. 00:48:16.32\00:48:17.66 Today, we have a High Priest 00:48:17.69\00:48:19.03 who is still ministering in our behalf, a mediator. 00:48:19.06\00:48:22.26 Also the New Covenant accomplishes 00:48:22.30\00:48:24.23 what the Old Covenant could not. 00:48:24.27\00:48:25.90 Hebrews 8:4-5, "For if He were on earth, 00:48:25.93\00:48:30.14 He would not be a priest, 00:48:30.17\00:48:31.61 since there are priests who offer the gifts 00:48:31.64\00:48:33.64 according to the law." 00:48:33.68\00:48:35.48 Verse 5, "Who serve the copy 00:48:35.51\00:48:37.58 and shadow of the heavenly things, 00:48:37.61\00:48:39.35 as Moses was divinely instructed 00:48:39.38\00:48:42.42 when he was about to make the tabernacle. 00:48:42.45\00:48:44.65 For He said, 'See that you make all things 00:48:44.69\00:48:46.99 according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.'" 00:48:47.02\00:48:50.76 So Moses when he was given directions 00:48:50.79\00:48:53.09 and instructions on how to have that temple built on earth, 00:48:53.13\00:48:56.93 he was given a picture, a representation, 00:48:56.97\00:48:59.07 a blueprint of the perfect tabernacle. 00:48:59.10\00:49:01.94 Look at verse 6. 00:49:01.97\00:49:03.61 "But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, 00:49:03.64\00:49:07.04 inasmuch as He is also mediator of a better covenant, 00:49:07.08\00:49:11.58 which was established on better promises." 00:49:11.61\00:49:14.85 Do you see the earthly priest, 00:49:14.88\00:49:16.79 they had an expiration date, 00:49:16.82\00:49:18.15 is called death. 00:49:18.19\00:49:19.69 They were faulty in every particular. 00:49:19.72\00:49:21.62 Let's look at Hebrews 8:7-9. 00:49:21.66\00:49:24.83 "For if that first covenant had been faultless, 00:49:24.86\00:49:27.03 then no place would have been sought for a second. 00:49:27.06\00:49:29.36 Because finding fault with them, He says: 00:49:29.40\00:49:31.63 'Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, 00:49:31.67\00:49:33.74 when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel 00:49:33.77\00:49:36.04 and with the house of Judah, 00:49:36.07\00:49:37.41 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers 00:49:37.44\00:49:39.81 in the day when I took them by the hand 00:49:39.84\00:49:41.41 to lead them out of the land of Egypt, 00:49:41.44\00:49:42.78 because they did not continue in My covenant, 00:49:42.81\00:49:45.61 and disregarded them, says the Lord.'" 00:49:45.65\00:49:47.55 Now this is an amazing passage. 00:49:47.58\00:49:48.98 He talked about finding fault. 00:49:49.02\00:49:51.82 The fault was on two levels. 00:49:51.85\00:49:53.42 The faultiness of the human character, 00:49:53.46\00:49:55.29 which is still continuing today, 00:49:55.32\00:49:58.09 but what's even deeper than that 00:49:58.13\00:50:00.96 the faultiness of the priesthood, 00:50:01.00\00:50:03.87 and the deeper faultiness of the sacrificial system. 00:50:03.90\00:50:07.67 So we find the imperfection of the priest 00:50:07.70\00:50:10.07 and the inefficacy of the sacrifices, 00:50:10.11\00:50:13.64 bulls, goats, lambs, doves, 00:50:13.68\00:50:16.71 those things were impossible 00:50:16.75\00:50:18.45 to take away the sins of humanity, 00:50:18.48\00:50:20.42 but they were foreshadowing the work 00:50:20.45\00:50:21.78 that Jesus would do when He came. 00:50:21.82\00:50:23.39 Look at Hebrews 9:13-14. 00:50:23.42\00:50:26.55 "For if the blood of bulls and goats 00:50:26.59\00:50:28.16 and the ashes of a heifer, 00:50:28.19\00:50:29.52 sprinkling the unclean, 00:50:29.56\00:50:31.63 sanctifies to the purifying of the flesh, 00:50:31.66\00:50:33.66 how much more shall the blood of Christ, 00:50:33.70\00:50:36.03 who through the eternal Spirit 00:50:36.06\00:50:37.73 offered Himself without spot to God, 00:50:37.77\00:50:40.30 cleanse your conscience from dead works 00:50:40.34\00:50:43.04 to serve the living God?" 00:50:43.07\00:50:44.41 So right away, you see, 00:50:44.44\00:50:45.77 you have a faulty animal that's going to die, 00:50:45.81\00:50:48.24 you have a faulty priest that's going to die, 00:50:48.28\00:50:50.85 trying to cover a faulty sins 00:50:50.88\00:50:52.25 that continue popping up every week, every day. 00:50:52.28\00:50:55.25 How could a faulty system bring perfection? 00:50:55.28\00:50:57.89 It could not. 00:50:57.92\00:50:59.25 Let's look at Hebrews 9:15. 00:50:59.29\00:51:01.72 "And for this reason 00:51:01.76\00:51:03.39 He is the Mediator of the New Covenant, 00:51:03.43\00:51:06.16 by means of death, 00:51:06.19\00:51:07.53 for the redemption of the transgressions 00:51:07.56\00:51:09.60 under the first covenant, 00:51:09.63\00:51:11.40 that those who are called may receive the promise 00:51:11.43\00:51:13.97 of the eternal inheritance." 00:51:14.00\00:51:15.57 What is the writer saying here? 00:51:15.60\00:51:17.14 All those sacrifices that were performed 00:51:17.17\00:51:19.94 for thousands of years 00:51:19.97\00:51:21.31 under the Old Covenant, 00:51:21.34\00:51:22.68 in the land of the Jews in the Jewish system 00:51:22.71\00:51:25.91 would be of no value 00:51:25.95\00:51:27.35 if Jesus did not die and rise again. 00:51:27.38\00:51:30.72 They couldn't be a substitute. 00:51:30.75\00:51:32.42 Just say, for example, Jesus didn't rise, 00:51:32.45\00:51:34.49 all those sacrifices that have been of no value, 00:51:34.52\00:51:36.99 because it was His spotless blood 00:51:37.03\00:51:39.29 that ratified and made all of those sacrifices valid. 00:51:39.33\00:51:43.63 It gave efficacy, it says, I know that's a faulty lamb, 00:51:43.67\00:51:47.00 but it pointed to the spotless Lamb 00:51:47.04\00:51:49.30 that taketh away the sins of the world. 00:51:49.34\00:51:50.87 Look at verse 23 of Hebrews 9. 00:51:50.91\00:51:53.34 "Therefore, it was necessary 00:51:53.38\00:51:55.81 that the copies of the things in the heavens 00:51:55.84\00:51:58.45 should be purged with these, 00:51:58.48\00:52:00.32 but the heavenly things themselves 00:52:00.35\00:52:02.15 with better sacrifices than these." 00:52:02.18\00:52:04.15 What is that saying? 00:52:04.19\00:52:05.52 The earthly priests couldn't make it to heaven, 00:52:05.55\00:52:07.06 but Jesus did, His own blood, He entered in. 00:52:07.09\00:52:10.26 That's why Revelation says, 00:52:10.29\00:52:11.63 we have overcome by the blood of the Lamb. 00:52:11.66\00:52:14.86 When John has seen the picture, 00:52:14.90\00:52:16.40 and no one is found worthy to open the scroll. 00:52:16.43\00:52:18.47 He says, "Look, I see a Lamb as it had been slain." 00:52:18.50\00:52:22.30 That's the efficacious, sinless, 00:52:22.34\00:52:24.24 spotless Lamb, Christ Jesus. 00:52:24.27\00:52:26.04 You see only through Jesus 00:52:26.07\00:52:28.14 can we find the purging of our sins 00:52:28.18\00:52:31.01 and the blotting out of our sins. 00:52:31.05\00:52:32.61 Praise the Lord for that. 00:52:32.65\00:52:34.08 makes it clear, 00:52:34.12\00:52:35.58 what was the earthly purpose of the sanctuary. 00:52:35.62\00:52:37.75 "For the law having a shadow of good things to come." 00:52:37.79\00:52:40.26 You see, many people thinking that the ceremonial system 00:52:40.29\00:52:43.59 and the commandments were both shadows. 00:52:43.63\00:52:45.53 No, no, no. 00:52:45.56\00:52:46.90 One was the gauge of the morality 00:52:46.93\00:52:48.43 or immorality of humanity 00:52:48.46\00:52:50.17 that shows us the need for a system of sacrifices 00:52:50.20\00:52:53.13 that showed us the need for the perfect Lamb of God 00:52:53.17\00:52:56.24 and His efficacious blood that was spotless. 00:52:56.27\00:53:00.21 But if you get rid of the mirror, 00:53:00.24\00:53:01.58 which is the Ten Commandments, you find that you feel perfect, 00:53:01.61\00:53:04.65 then you don't need Christ. 00:53:04.68\00:53:06.01 That's why the commandments still exist today. 00:53:06.05\00:53:08.35 Without the law, there is no knowledge of sin. 00:53:08.38\00:53:11.39 Paul said, "I have not known sin, but by the law." 00:53:11.42\00:53:14.19 He wasn't talking about just the ceremonial system. 00:53:14.22\00:53:16.79 But that was temporary, 00:53:16.83\00:53:18.16 done away with when Jesus Christ died. 00:53:18.19\00:53:19.79 But the commandments, 00:53:19.83\00:53:21.16 the Ten Commandments that continue to exist, 00:53:21.20\00:53:23.10 show us today, 00:53:23.13\00:53:24.70 we don't need lambs and bulls and goats, 00:53:24.73\00:53:27.17 we have the High Priest, Jesus. 00:53:27.20\00:53:29.77 He is the priest, He is the judge, 00:53:29.80\00:53:32.14 and He's also the sacrifice. 00:53:32.17\00:53:33.54 Praise His name. 00:53:33.58\00:53:34.91 That's why we go down 00:53:34.94\00:53:36.28 to the Book of 2 Corinthians 5:17. 00:53:36.31\00:53:39.38 And this is what the beautiful thing 00:53:39.41\00:53:41.32 of the message of the New Covenant 00:53:41.35\00:53:43.05 of better sacrifice. 00:53:43.08\00:53:45.15 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, 00:53:45.19\00:53:49.22 he is a new creation, 00:53:49.26\00:53:50.79 old things have passed away, 00:53:50.83\00:53:52.76 behold, all things have become new." 00:53:52.79\00:53:55.06 What has the Lamb Jesus have done for us? 00:53:55.10\00:53:57.97 Romans 5:6-10. 00:53:58.00\00:53:59.77 What has He done for us? 00:53:59.80\00:54:01.37 Here it is, "For when we were still without strength, 00:54:01.40\00:54:05.44 in due time, Christ died for the ungodly, 00:54:05.47\00:54:08.24 not lambs and bulls and goats, but Jesus. 00:54:08.28\00:54:11.15 For scarcely for a righteous man 00:54:11.18\00:54:13.28 will one die yet perhaps for a good man, 00:54:13.31\00:54:15.28 someone would even dare to die, but God." 00:54:15.32\00:54:18.52 What two words? 00:54:18.55\00:54:19.89 The two words between salvation and loss 00:54:19.92\00:54:21.59 are the word or the phrase but God, 00:54:21.62\00:54:23.99 "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, 00:54:24.03\00:54:26.49 in that while we were yet sinners, 00:54:26.53\00:54:28.66 Christ died for us," the efficacious Lamb of God. 00:54:28.70\00:54:32.57 Now verse 9, "Much more than 00:54:32.60\00:54:35.60 having now been justified by His blood, 00:54:35.64\00:54:39.34 a symbol of the Old Covenant, 00:54:39.37\00:54:41.11 we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 00:54:41.14\00:54:43.98 For if, when we were enemies, 00:54:44.01\00:54:46.92 we were reconciled to God 00:54:46.95\00:54:48.45 through the death of His Son much more, 00:54:48.48\00:54:51.72 having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 00:54:51.75\00:54:55.99 "And I end with the declaration of John, 00:54:56.02\00:54:58.99 the eternal declaration that covers 00:54:59.03\00:55:01.60 from the entrance of sin to the eradication of sin. 00:55:01.63\00:55:05.07 Revelation 13:8, 00:55:05.10\00:55:06.90 "And all who dwell on the earth will worship Him, 00:55:06.94\00:55:09.74 whose names have not been written in the Book of life 00:55:09.77\00:55:13.01 of the Lamb slain 00:55:13.04\00:55:16.38 from the foundation of the world." 00:55:16.41\00:55:18.41 Yes, friends, Jesus is the mediator 00:55:18.45\00:55:21.58 of the better covenant. 00:55:21.62\00:55:23.05 Amen. Amen. 00:55:23.08\00:55:25.12 Great thoughts. Thank you so much. 00:55:25.15\00:55:26.79 And we do have 00:55:26.82\00:55:28.16 just a couple of minutes left over 00:55:28.19\00:55:29.52 for some closing thoughts. 00:55:29.56\00:55:30.93 John? 00:55:30.96\00:55:32.29 Yes, Jesus Christ is our mediator. 00:55:32.33\00:55:35.53 And I am praising the Lord because He was victorious 00:55:35.56\00:55:39.50 and because of His victorious sacrifice 00:55:39.53\00:55:41.87 you and I have hope. 00:55:41.90\00:55:43.51 Amen. Amen. 00:55:43.54\00:55:44.87 Many years ago, 00:55:44.91\00:55:46.24 there was a popular song called, We Are The Champions. 00:55:46.27\00:55:49.14 Well, you know, I can say this for sure 00:55:49.18\00:55:51.41 that we cannot even dare claim the victory for ourselves 00:55:51.45\00:55:54.72 'cause we are only overcomers 00:55:54.75\00:55:56.48 because of the Eternal Champion of the world, 00:55:56.52\00:56:00.19 Jesus Christ. 00:56:00.22\00:56:01.56 My friends, please, please allow Jesus Christ 00:56:01.59\00:56:03.89 to be the champion of your life today. 00:56:03.93\00:56:06.63 Amen. Amen. 00:56:06.66\00:56:08.40 On those days, when I might feel discouraged, 00:56:08.43\00:56:10.93 or I might wonder, "God, where are You? 00:56:10.97\00:56:13.27 God, can You forgive me? 00:56:13.30\00:56:14.64 God, I'm reaching out after You," 00:56:14.67\00:56:16.30 I'm reminded of Hebrews 7:25. 00:56:16.34\00:56:19.44 "He, Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God 00:56:19.47\00:56:22.81 is able to save to the uttermost, 00:56:22.84\00:56:26.38 those who come to God through Him 00:56:26.41\00:56:28.42 because He always lives to make intercession for them." 00:56:28.45\00:56:31.72 So just hold on to that promise, 00:56:31.75\00:56:34.29 know that Jesus is right now interceding for you, 00:56:34.32\00:56:37.73 He can wash you clean, 00:56:37.76\00:56:39.59 and make you His child 00:56:39.63\00:56:41.00 That's right. 00:56:41.03\00:56:42.36 Thank you. Jill. Thank you, Ryan. 00:56:42.40\00:56:43.73 Thank you, John. 00:56:43.77\00:56:45.10 And when we think about 00:56:45.13\00:56:46.47 the beautiful ministry of Jesus, 00:56:46.50\00:56:47.84 we find these words in the Book of Hebrews. 00:56:47.87\00:56:49.50 Hebrews 10:23. 00:56:49.54\00:56:51.47 He says, in light of all that Jesus Christ has done for us, 00:56:51.51\00:56:54.28 in light of the provision of sins being blotted out, 00:56:54.31\00:56:57.85 sins being forgiven, lives being renewed. 00:56:57.88\00:57:00.62 The writer says these words to us and I encourage you, 00:57:00.65\00:57:03.08 Hebrews 10:23, 00:57:03.12\00:57:04.75 "Let us hold fast to confession of our hope without wavering, 00:57:04.79\00:57:09.32 for He who promised is faithful." 00:57:09.36\00:57:12.49 Yes, we have a High Priest, a faithful High Priest, 00:57:12.53\00:57:15.90 who is continuing to mediate, 00:57:15.93\00:57:18.53 that we may one day be where He is. 00:57:18.57\00:57:21.60 Hold fast, that day is not far away. 00:57:21.64\00:57:24.47 Amen. Amen. 00:57:24.51\00:57:25.84 Thank you, John, for sharing with us 00:57:25.87\00:57:27.68 that Jesus is the mediator of better covenant. 00:57:27.71\00:57:29.88 And thank you, Jill, for sharing with us 00:57:29.91\00:57:31.81 that Jesus is our High Priest. 00:57:31.85\00:57:34.55 And thank you, Ryan, for sharing with us 00:57:34.58\00:57:36.25 that Jesus is our champion. 00:57:36.28\00:57:38.42 Many men want to be gods, 00:57:38.45\00:57:39.79 but God is the only one that became a man. 00:57:39.82\00:57:42.29 And thank you, John, for sharing with us 00:57:42.32\00:57:44.39 that Jesus is our one mediator, and Jesus is our one king. 00:57:44.43\00:57:50.37 Thank you for joining us for this week's lesson study, 00:57:50.40\00:57:53.77 The Message of Hebrews. 00:57:53.80\00:57:55.44 It's a powerful message, and it's a message of hope. 00:57:55.47\00:57:58.17 And we're just so thankful that we have hope 00:57:58.21\00:58:01.11 in this world today. 00:58:01.14\00:58:02.48
