The Resurrection of Moses.
00:00:45.67\00:00:47.68
Hello, friends,
it's hard to believe
00:01:18.17\00:01:19.54
we've journeyed
through 13 lessons.
00:01:19.57\00:01:22.21
This is lesson number 13
00:01:22.24\00:01:23.98
of our study Present
Truth in Deuteronomy.
00:01:24.01\00:01:26.72
I'm Jill Morikone.
00:01:26.75\00:01:28.08
And it's been for myself
personally an amazing study,
00:01:28.12\00:01:31.25
and I know I've learned so much,
00:01:31.29\00:01:32.62
and we hope and
pray you have as well.
00:01:32.65\00:01:34.79
We have our family
with us on the set again.
00:01:34.82\00:01:36.83
To my left Pastor John Lomacang.
00:01:36.86\00:01:38.49
Glad you're here, Pastor.
00:01:38.53\00:01:39.86
Yes, yes, here
we are in December,
00:01:39.89\00:01:42.03
winding down a lesson
00:01:42.06\00:01:43.40
that has been just a
blessing to all of those
00:01:43.43\00:01:45.53
that have watched and
thank you for tuning in.
00:01:45.57\00:01:47.14
Amen.
00:01:47.17\00:01:48.50
To your left
Pastor James Rafferty,
00:01:48.54\00:01:49.87
so glad you've been
with us this quarter.
00:01:49.90\00:01:51.31
It has been a
blessing to be here.
00:01:51.34\00:01:52.91
We're going to be
looking on Tuesday's lesson
00:01:52.94\00:01:54.31
at the death of
Moses and parallels
00:01:54.34\00:01:56.14
between Moses and Christ.
00:01:56.18\00:01:57.58
Amen.
00:01:57.61\00:01:58.95
My Sister, Shelley Quinn,
it's been a wonderful study.
00:01:58.98\00:02:01.85
You know, Deuteronomy
is a Book of the Covenant.
00:02:01.88\00:02:05.99
And I love the
Book of Deuteronomy
00:02:06.02\00:02:08.32
even more now.
00:02:08.36\00:02:09.92
Amen. Me too, for sure.
00:02:09.96\00:02:11.66
Last but not
least, Pastor Ryan Day,
00:02:11.69\00:02:14.20
so glad you're here, Brother.
00:02:14.23\00:02:15.63
I'm glad to be here.
00:02:15.66\00:02:17.00
And we're gonna be talking about
00:02:17.03\00:02:18.60
the resurrection of us all.
00:02:18.63\00:02:20.54
Yay!
00:02:20.57\00:02:21.90
Looking forward to
this amazing study.
00:02:21.94\00:02:23.94
But first, we're gonna
go to the Lord in prayer.
00:02:23.97\00:02:26.14
And, Pastor James,
would you pray for us?
00:02:26.17\00:02:27.91
Yes.
00:02:27.94\00:02:29.28
Let's pray.
00:02:29.31\00:02:30.65
Father, we just
want to thank You,
00:02:30.68\00:02:32.01
for each of the viewers
and for each of the presenters,
00:02:32.05\00:02:34.85
and most of all, for
Your Word for Jesus Christ,
00:02:34.88\00:02:37.42
who is the Word and for the gift
00:02:37.45\00:02:39.45
that He sent to us
of the Holy Spirit.
00:02:39.49\00:02:41.19
We ask for that gift
now to guide and direct us,
00:02:41.22\00:02:44.06
to speak to our hearts
and the hearts of each viewer,
00:02:44.09\00:02:46.46
each that they're
hearing these words
00:02:46.49\00:02:47.83
and we ask it in
Jesus' name, amen.
00:02:47.86\00:02:49.70
Amen.
00:02:49.73\00:02:51.07
We look this
week, our lesson title
00:02:51.10\00:02:52.83
is The Resurrection of Moses.
00:02:52.87\00:02:54.94
You know, Moses was one
of the central characters
00:02:54.97\00:02:56.91
of the Book of
Deuteronomy, was he not?
00:02:56.94\00:02:58.87
His life, his
character and his messages
00:02:58.91\00:03:01.94
pervade the book.
00:03:01.98\00:03:03.88
Moses was the
messenger called by God
00:03:03.91\00:03:06.65
to communicate God's love,
00:03:06.68\00:03:08.68
God's covenant,
God's law to the people,
00:03:08.72\00:03:12.45
and for over 40 years,
00:03:12.49\00:03:14.36
Moses served
faithfully, did he not?
00:03:14.39\00:03:16.93
Enduring hardship and privation,
00:03:16.96\00:03:19.63
stress and overwork,
00:03:19.66\00:03:22.13
criticism and open rebellion,
discouragements and setback,
00:03:22.16\00:03:27.37
yet on the flip
side, for 40 years,
00:03:27.40\00:03:31.27
Moses
experienced God's promises,
00:03:31.31\00:03:34.71
and God's presence,
open communication with God,
00:03:34.74\00:03:38.88
God's miracles and
deliverance, God's Word,
00:03:38.91\00:03:42.05
he experienced God Himself.
00:03:42.08\00:03:44.12
Moses, in fact, was
called the friend of God.
00:03:44.15\00:03:48.09
This week we study
Moses' death and resurrection,
00:03:48.12\00:03:52.69
and our memory text has to
do with Moses' resurrection,
00:03:52.73\00:03:56.26
that is Jude verse 9.
00:03:56.30\00:03:58.47
Jude 9 is our memory text.
00:03:58.50\00:04:00.64
"Yet Michael the archangel,
in contending with the devil,
00:04:00.67\00:04:04.21
when he disputed
about the body of Moses,
00:04:04.24\00:04:06.57
dared not bring against
him a reviling accusation,
00:04:06.61\00:04:10.01
but said, 'The
Lord rebuke you!'"
00:04:10.05\00:04:13.08
And I think Shelley is going
to talk to us more about that.
00:04:13.11\00:04:15.92
On Sunday's lesson we
have The Sin of Moses: Part 1.
00:04:15.95\00:04:20.46
Now it's Part 1,
and I'm not sure yet
00:04:20.49\00:04:22.36
what Pastor John's gonna share,
00:04:22.39\00:04:23.76
he has The Sin of Moses: Part 2,
00:04:23.79\00:04:25.79
so hopefully I don't step over
into your territory with this.
00:04:25.83\00:04:28.73
Okay.
00:04:28.76\00:04:30.27
Last summer,
there was the Olympics.
00:04:30.30\00:04:32.43
And Greg and I were
watching one of the...
00:04:32.47\00:04:34.90
I forget even which meet it was,
00:04:34.94\00:04:36.30
but it was one
of the track meets
00:04:36.34\00:04:37.97
with the female athletes
00:04:38.01\00:04:39.34
and they're
running around the track
00:04:39.37\00:04:40.71
and I'll never forget one
of them stumbled and fell.
00:04:40.74\00:04:43.01
And what happens usually
when you're in a competition
00:04:43.04\00:04:45.61
if someone stumbles and falls?
00:04:45.65\00:04:47.25
They either stay down
00:04:47.28\00:04:48.62
or they might get
up and try to finish,
00:04:48.65\00:04:50.05
but they might finish
last or fifth or sixth.
00:04:50.09\00:04:53.46
This person,
this woman, she felt,
00:04:53.49\00:04:56.06
she stumbled and fell.
00:04:56.09\00:04:57.43
She got up and she won.
00:04:57.46\00:04:59.36
She finished first.
00:04:59.39\00:05:01.70
We were just astounded
staring at the television
00:05:01.73\00:05:04.63
just watching as she fell.
00:05:04.67\00:05:06.33
She's behind everybody
and she passed everybody up,
00:05:06.37\00:05:09.57
and she won.
00:05:09.60\00:05:10.94
The sin of Moses,
00:05:10.97\00:05:12.31
we look at the stumble of Moses,
00:05:12.34\00:05:13.88
which might look like defeat.
00:05:13.91\00:05:15.98
But guess what happened?
00:05:16.01\00:05:17.35
He won.
00:05:17.38\00:05:18.71
He got up, and he won.
00:05:18.75\00:05:22.18
If you think about
men from the Word of God,
00:05:22.22\00:05:24.22
I'm thinking specifically
of kings in the Old Testament,
00:05:24.25\00:05:27.16
who stumbled and fell.
00:05:27.19\00:05:28.72
Think about King David.
00:05:28.76\00:05:30.19
He served God
faithfully as a king
00:05:30.23\00:05:32.96
until what happened?
00:05:32.99\00:05:34.33
Bathsheba, think
about King Solomon,
00:05:34.36\00:05:37.57
he enjoyed unprecedented wisdom
and unparalleled prosperity,
00:05:37.60\00:05:42.90
until his wives
turned his heart against God,
00:05:42.94\00:05:46.94
or into idolatry.
00:05:46.98\00:05:48.91
Think about good king Azah.
00:05:48.94\00:05:50.88
He did what was good and
right in the sight of God,
00:05:50.91\00:05:54.42
until he stripped
the silver and gold
00:05:54.45\00:05:56.55
from the temple to have,
00:05:56.58\00:05:58.15
to hire a foreign king to
fight against his enemies.
00:05:58.19\00:06:02.32
And when he was
confronted with a sin,
00:06:02.36\00:06:04.16
instead of
repenting he became angry,
00:06:04.19\00:06:06.46
and he put the
prophet in prison.
00:06:06.49\00:06:08.70
Think about King Jehoshaphat,
he made many reforms for God,
00:06:08.73\00:06:13.03
until he made an
alliance with wicked king Ahab.
00:06:13.07\00:06:17.31
Think about King Joash,
00:06:17.34\00:06:18.81
he repaired the
house of the Lord,
00:06:18.84\00:06:20.91
until he turned to
idolatry and murdered
00:06:20.94\00:06:24.08
the son of the man
who actually raised him.
00:06:24.11\00:06:27.32
Think about King Hezekiah,
00:06:27.35\00:06:29.12
he restored the
worship of God in Judah,
00:06:29.15\00:06:32.32
and saw God perform
miracles on his behalf,
00:06:32.35\00:06:36.42
until he showed the
Babylonians everything
00:06:36.46\00:06:38.79
in his house and in his kingdom.
00:06:38.83\00:06:41.83
You know, the Word
of God portrays people,
00:06:41.86\00:06:44.50
works and all,
excuse me, expression,
00:06:44.53\00:06:47.04
but it shows our
sin, not just ours,
00:06:47.07\00:06:50.11
but these heroes
of the Word of God,
00:06:50.14\00:06:52.34
men and women
who walked with God,
00:06:52.37\00:06:54.41
and we see
sometimes their mistakes.
00:06:54.44\00:06:56.18
And that's what we see
today with the sin of Moses.
00:06:56.21\00:06:58.81
The verses are Numbers 20:1-13.
00:06:58.85\00:07:02.18
We're not going to
really jump into them,
00:07:02.22\00:07:03.89
but Numbers 20:1-13,
00:07:03.92\00:07:05.92
we see Moses' stumble,
we see the sin of Moses.
00:07:05.95\00:07:10.46
Now remember before,
00:07:10.49\00:07:11.83
this is in
Exodus 17 at Rephidim.
00:07:11.86\00:07:15.16
I don't know how you
pronounce that, Rephidim?
00:07:15.20\00:07:17.20
Rephidim, whatever.
00:07:17.23\00:07:18.63
There was no water.
00:07:18.67\00:07:20.00
Remember, Moses
followed God's command
00:07:20.04\00:07:22.34
to strike the rock one time,
00:07:22.37\00:07:25.27
and he obeyed God.
00:07:25.31\00:07:26.64
This was, of course, Exodus 17
00:07:26.68\00:07:28.04
before the giving of
the Ten Commandments.
00:07:28.08\00:07:29.88
It's early on in the
journey of the Israelites.
00:07:29.91\00:07:32.95
That rock we see
00:07:32.98\00:07:34.32
in 1 Corinthians
10 represented who?
00:07:34.35\00:07:36.38
Christ and Christ was stricken
00:07:36.42\00:07:38.79
once to bring
forth living water.
00:07:38.82\00:07:42.59
Now in Numbers 20, we
come to Kadesh and there,
00:07:42.62\00:07:46.93
again, there's no water.
00:07:46.96\00:07:48.90
In this case, Moses
was commanded to what?
00:07:48.93\00:07:52.67
Speak to the rock.
00:07:52.70\00:07:54.47
But instead of speaking
to the rock, what happened?
00:07:54.50\00:07:58.17
He struck it not
just once, but two times.
00:07:58.21\00:08:02.01
The name Kadesh mean
sacred or holy place.
00:08:02.04\00:08:04.51
But at Kadesh,
neither Moses nor the people
00:08:04.55\00:08:07.15
acted in a holy manner.
00:08:07.18\00:08:08.88
The people complained bitterly,
if only we had died in Egypt,
00:08:08.92\00:08:13.39
why did you bring us out
in the wilderness to die?
00:08:13.42\00:08:17.03
Why did you make
us come out of Egypt?
00:08:17.06\00:08:19.43
This is probably toward
the very end of their journey.
00:08:19.46\00:08:22.00
So we see this at
the very beginning
00:08:22.03\00:08:23.53
of the journey,
there's no water,
00:08:23.57\00:08:24.90
God performs a miracle.
00:08:24.93\00:08:26.43
Toward the very
end of the journey,
00:08:26.47\00:08:27.87
we see again, no water,
00:08:27.90\00:08:30.17
God did perform a miracle
00:08:30.21\00:08:31.54
because water came
forth from the rock.
00:08:31.57\00:08:34.94
But Moses didn't have any power.
00:08:34.98\00:08:36.48
Remember what he said,
00:08:36.51\00:08:37.85
must I bring forth
water from the rock,
00:08:37.88\00:08:39.88
but he didn't have
power to bring forth water,
00:08:39.91\00:08:41.95
it came from God Himself.
00:08:41.98\00:08:43.89
So I want to look at
six lessons for leaders
00:08:43.92\00:08:49.02
from this experience of Moses
at the rock, the sin of Moses.
00:08:49.06\00:08:53.73
Lesson number one,
don't rely on past victories.
00:08:53.76\00:08:58.70
You know, Moses had
obeyed before, had he not?
00:08:58.73\00:09:01.17
Many times, he left Egypt
under God's direct command.
00:09:01.20\00:09:04.84
He crossed the Red Sea
under God's direct command.
00:09:04.87\00:09:08.91
He obtained the
water at Rephidim
00:09:08.94\00:09:11.28
under God's direct command.
00:09:11.31\00:09:14.12
Just because we
walked with God yesterday,
00:09:14.15\00:09:16.45
just because we
had an experience
00:09:16.48\00:09:18.22
with God last week
00:09:18.25\00:09:20.09
does not mean it
carries over for today.
00:09:20.12\00:09:22.46
You know, Paul says
in 1 Corinthians 15:31,
00:09:22.49\00:09:24.99
what does he say?
00:09:25.03\00:09:26.36
I die daily, meaning
00:09:26.39\00:09:27.73
we don't just have
an experience with God
00:09:27.76\00:09:30.00
when we come to
church on Sabbath and we say,
00:09:30.03\00:09:31.87
"Okay, God, I
want to follow You.
00:09:31.90\00:09:33.23
I'm going to
serve you this week."
00:09:33.27\00:09:34.60
And then we go on our way.
00:09:34.64\00:09:35.97
No, we cannot
rely on past victories,
00:09:36.00\00:09:38.91
on experiences,
mountaintop experiences
00:09:38.94\00:09:41.54
we've had with God in the past.
00:09:41.58\00:09:42.91
Those are good. Those are well.
00:09:42.94\00:09:44.68
But every day,
every moment of every day,
00:09:44.71\00:09:48.48
we need to be
connected with God.
00:09:48.52\00:09:51.32
Lesson number two,
don't allow other people
00:09:51.35\00:09:54.79
to sway your
decisions or your emotions.
00:09:54.82\00:09:58.83
You know, the people
grumbled and complained.
00:09:58.86\00:10:00.73
Is that wearing?
00:10:00.76\00:10:02.36
Would that sway
how you were affected?
00:10:02.40\00:10:05.97
Would that
change how you interact
00:10:06.00\00:10:08.17
with someone else?
00:10:08.20\00:10:09.80
Proverbs 29:25, says,
00:10:09.84\00:10:12.54
"Fearing people
is a dangerous trap,
00:10:12.57\00:10:15.51
but trusting in
the Lord means safety."
00:10:15.54\00:10:18.68
Proverbs 27:17,
"As iron sharpens iron,
00:10:18.71\00:10:21.42
so a man sharpens the
countenance of his friend."
00:10:21.45\00:10:24.99
You know, it's
easy to love people
00:10:25.02\00:10:26.35
if they love you back.
00:10:26.39\00:10:27.72
Is that not true? That's true.
00:10:27.76\00:10:29.09
It's painless to
reach out to people
00:10:29.12\00:10:30.46
if they don't have any freckles.
00:10:30.49\00:10:31.83
But the real test comes
00:10:31.86\00:10:33.63
if the loving
costs you something,
00:10:33.66\00:10:36.46
if the leadership
costs you something,
00:10:36.50\00:10:40.37
when it hurts,
00:10:40.40\00:10:41.74
that is the
real test of a leader
00:10:41.77\00:10:43.91
when it's difficult.
00:10:43.94\00:10:45.84
Don't allow other
people to sway your decisions.
00:10:45.87\00:10:48.11
Don't say,
"Well, my church board
00:10:48.14\00:10:49.91
wants me to move this direction.
00:10:49.94\00:10:51.28
Well, the people
around me are saying this.
00:10:51.31\00:10:53.48
Well, the people are
grumbling and complaining.
00:10:53.52\00:10:55.52
Well, I'm not really sure.
00:10:55.55\00:10:56.92
And I'm swayed by the
opinions of people around me."
00:10:56.95\00:11:01.99
Don't allow other
people to sway your emotions
00:11:02.02\00:11:05.46
or your decisions.
00:11:05.49\00:11:06.96
Principle number three,
00:11:07.00\00:11:08.66
go from your critic's
presence to the Lord's presence.
00:11:08.70\00:11:13.20
Now Moses did this very well.
00:11:13.23\00:11:14.70
In this situation,
he did it very well,
00:11:14.74\00:11:17.21
continue to rely on
him because what did he do?
00:11:17.24\00:11:19.37
The people moan and complain.
00:11:19.41\00:11:20.74
They said, "Why did you
bring us up out of Egypt?
00:11:20.78\00:11:22.34
Why did you do this?"
00:11:22.38\00:11:23.71
And what does
the Word of God say?
00:11:23.75\00:11:25.08
Moses and Aaron fell on
their face before the Lord.
00:11:25.11\00:11:28.42
So they went
straight from the people
00:11:28.45\00:11:29.98
who were under them,
00:11:30.02\00:11:31.35
people who were complaining,
people who were murmuring,
00:11:31.39\00:11:33.36
people who were
saying all manner of things
00:11:33.39\00:11:35.86
and what did they do?
00:11:35.89\00:11:37.23
They went straight to God.
00:11:37.26\00:11:39.09
They went from
their critic's presence
00:11:39.13\00:11:42.30
to God's presence.
00:11:42.33\00:11:43.93
So many times, we go
from a critic's presence.
00:11:43.97\00:11:47.30
I've done this.
00:11:47.34\00:11:49.00
And I go straight to
someone else and I complain,
00:11:49.04\00:11:52.14
or I sit and I nurse a
little bit of self pity,
00:11:52.17\00:11:55.74
or I go internal.
00:11:55.78\00:11:57.45
No, no, no.
00:11:57.48\00:11:58.81
When something
comes against you,
00:11:58.85\00:12:00.18
go straight to the face
of God and bring it to Him.
00:12:00.22\00:12:04.45
Principle number four,
deal with your besetting sin.
00:12:04.49\00:12:09.72
Now Moses, we know
the Word of God says
00:12:09.76\00:12:11.86
was the meekest
man on all the earth.
00:12:11.89\00:12:14.20
We did see that anger
00:12:14.23\00:12:15.80
was kindled with
the Egyptian, right?
00:12:15.83\00:12:17.57
Early in his
life, is that not true?
00:12:17.60\00:12:19.50
Forty years later,
00:12:19.53\00:12:20.87
he spends his
wandering with the Midianites
00:12:20.90\00:12:23.00
he comes back.
00:12:23.04\00:12:24.37
And in Exodus 11, he
left Pharaoh's presence,
00:12:24.41\00:12:26.81
the Bible says in great anger.
00:12:26.84\00:12:29.21
And then we see 40
years later at the very end
00:12:29.24\00:12:33.18
him responding in anger
against striking the rock.
00:12:33.21\00:12:37.82
Ask God to reveal
00:12:37.85\00:12:39.49
what your
particular besetting sin is.
00:12:39.52\00:12:43.16
We know Hebrews 12,
00:12:43.19\00:12:44.53
we're supposed to
lay aside every weight
00:12:44.56\00:12:45.89
and the sin which
so easily besets us.
00:12:45.93\00:12:48.40
I don't know about you,
00:12:48.43\00:12:49.76
but this is my
opinion for leaders,
00:12:49.80\00:12:51.27
specific
besetting sins for leaders,
00:12:51.30\00:12:54.17
pride and selfishness.
00:12:54.20\00:12:56.04
The need for
approval or approbation,
00:12:56.07\00:12:59.97
marriage and family problems,
00:13:00.01\00:13:02.94
anger or the lack of forgiveness
00:13:02.98\00:13:05.28
or a need for revenge,
00:13:05.31\00:13:07.68
desire for power.
00:13:07.72\00:13:09.98
The need to be right
00:13:10.02\00:13:11.52
or the inability to
listen to people under you.
00:13:11.55\00:13:15.22
Cowardice or lack of leadership
00:13:15.26\00:13:18.46
or the inability to
stand for principle,
00:13:18.49\00:13:21.60
deal with your besetting sin.
00:13:21.63\00:13:23.26
Principle number
five, look to Jesus.
00:13:23.30\00:13:26.57
We just quoted Hebrews 12:1
00:13:26.60\00:13:28.24
about laying aside
those besetting sins.
00:13:28.27\00:13:30.21
Hebrews 12:2 says,
"Looking unto Jesus,
00:13:30.24\00:13:33.01
the author and
finisher of our faith,
00:13:33.04\00:13:36.04
who for the joy that was set
before Him endured the cross,
00:13:36.08\00:13:38.78
despising the shame."
00:13:38.81\00:13:40.22
Principle number
six, last lesson,
00:13:40.25\00:13:42.48
accept responsibility,
but never take credit.
00:13:42.52\00:13:47.99
Give God the glory for
all He uses you to accomplish.
00:13:48.02\00:13:52.26
Give God the glory
for what God has done.
00:13:52.29\00:13:55.10
And give God the glory
for what other people do.
00:13:55.13\00:13:57.63
Don't take the credit,
but accept the responsibility
00:13:57.67\00:14:01.67
when the mistake belongs to you.
00:14:01.70\00:14:03.71
Moses made it appear what?
00:14:03.74\00:14:05.17
That he made the
water flow out of the rock
00:14:05.21\00:14:07.71
and it confused
the people's minds
00:14:07.74\00:14:10.28
did God bring that or did Moses.
00:14:10.31\00:14:13.45
It's neither Paul nor
Apollos that brought anything.
00:14:13.48\00:14:16.85
It's neither you
or I that do anything,
00:14:16.89\00:14:19.15
God is the one who
gives the increase.
00:14:19.19\00:14:21.79
Wow. Thank you, Jill.
00:14:21.82\00:14:23.16
Thank you so much
for a wonderful beginning
00:14:23.19\00:14:24.53
to the lesson.
00:14:24.56\00:14:25.89
And I'm going to go over
00:14:25.93\00:14:27.70
some of the
ground you've covered
00:14:27.73\00:14:29.06
but thank you for laying it out.
00:14:29.10\00:14:30.43
You touched on it briefly
00:14:30.47\00:14:31.80
in the Book of
Numbers Chapter 20.
00:14:31.83\00:14:33.54
But I'm going to go on
to a little bit of detail
00:14:33.57\00:14:35.64
about The Sin of Moses: Part 2.
00:14:35.67\00:14:39.01
First, I want to begin by
going to the Book of Mark,
00:14:39.04\00:14:44.18
Mark Chapter 9.
00:14:44.21\00:14:46.05
And this is true in our lives
00:14:46.08\00:14:49.05
as well as in the life of Moses.
00:14:49.08\00:14:52.29
Now Moses,
00:14:52.32\00:14:53.66
as it were was a
present help to the Israelites.
00:14:53.69\00:14:59.36
But he was more
than just a leader.
00:14:59.39\00:15:01.50
Moses was their
reference point of the power
00:15:01.53\00:15:05.67
and the reliability of God.
00:15:05.70\00:15:07.67
Moses was the one
that people look to
00:15:07.70\00:15:10.01
in the moments of crisis
00:15:10.04\00:15:12.07
when everybody
else was stressing.
00:15:12.11\00:15:14.08
Moses didn't
really have that option.
00:15:14.11\00:15:16.21
That's why he said,
"Why do you cry to me?"
00:15:16.24\00:15:19.61
Even when it came to leadership,
00:15:19.65\00:15:21.18
his father-in-law,
Jethro said to Moses,
00:15:21.22\00:15:23.85
"You cannot live your
life as a stressful leader,
00:15:23.89\00:15:26.86
divide the responsibilities
00:15:26.89\00:15:28.82
equally among
those who can handle it,
00:15:28.86\00:15:31.26
and leave the more
difficult cases for yourself."
00:15:31.29\00:15:33.60
So all through his ministry,
00:15:33.63\00:15:34.96
God was taking Moses
through three particular phases,
00:15:35.00\00:15:38.83
from his abandonment
00:15:38.87\00:15:40.20
and I identify
with Moses on that,
00:15:40.24\00:15:42.64
because what was true
about him is true about me.
00:15:42.67\00:15:45.34
I was abandoned
at three months old,
00:15:45.37\00:15:46.98
left by my mother,
00:15:47.01\00:15:49.28
to be raised by someone else
00:15:49.31\00:15:51.65
in the fear and
admonition of the Lord.
00:15:51.68\00:15:54.22
The benefit of Moses was,
00:15:54.25\00:15:55.72
even though
Pharaoh's daughter found
00:15:55.75\00:15:57.09
and his mother still had
the blessing of raising him.
00:15:57.12\00:15:59.39
I was the youngest of three,
00:15:59.42\00:16:01.42
and my sister and my brother
was in the same order of age.
00:16:01.46\00:16:05.09
So I understand
that aspect of it
00:16:05.13\00:16:07.50
being the third
of three children.
00:16:07.53\00:16:09.56
The other thing is,
00:16:09.60\00:16:11.33
being the one that God used
to call the children of Israel
00:16:11.37\00:16:14.57
and lead them out of Egypt,
00:16:14.60\00:16:16.20
having to overcome the obstacles
00:16:16.24\00:16:18.27
of not really being
that great of a speaker.
00:16:18.31\00:16:20.88
As a matter of fact, I
look back on my ministry
00:16:20.91\00:16:22.71
and I thought, wow,
I've got the strongest
00:16:22.74\00:16:24.71
dynamically
strong New York accent.
00:16:24.75\00:16:27.38
And when I went to California,
00:16:27.42\00:16:28.75
they told me
your accent is strong.
00:16:28.78\00:16:30.69
I would instead
of say foreyard use,
00:16:30.72\00:16:32.49
East Coast was like vestibule.
00:16:32.52\00:16:34.49
And people said,
"What is a vestibule?"
00:16:34.52\00:16:36.96
I said, "That's out of what do
you guys call this is a foyer."
00:16:36.99\00:16:40.20
And I'd use phrases
like we sat on the stoop.
00:16:40.23\00:16:42.93
They say, "What are the stoops?"
00:16:42.96\00:16:44.37
I said, "For you
guys, that's the porch."
00:16:44.40\00:16:46.40
And so God had to really take me
00:16:46.43\00:16:48.60
through this long
road of refinement,
00:16:48.64\00:16:51.71
which Moses' first four years
00:16:51.74\00:16:53.54
was in the
refining schools in Egypt.
00:16:53.58\00:16:55.91
And then his next 40
years was as a shepherd.
00:16:55.94\00:16:59.58
God took him to learn
00:16:59.61\00:17:01.22
that this next
phase of your life
00:17:01.25\00:17:04.55
is going to be
among some stinky sheep.
00:17:04.59\00:17:07.09
But they're going to
have two legs instead of four.
00:17:07.12\00:17:09.69
And Moses had to deal
00:17:09.72\00:17:11.19
with the pucky
of adult Christians
00:17:11.23\00:17:14.23
that acted like children.
00:17:14.26\00:17:16.20
And so he had to lead them
00:17:16.23\00:17:17.57
in through all their
bends and turns of life,
00:17:17.60\00:17:19.80
and but he did
not have the option
00:17:19.83\00:17:21.90
of misrepresenting God.
00:17:21.94\00:17:24.14
And that was what I'm
going to talk about today.
00:17:24.17\00:17:26.47
And the reason
why Moses' position
00:17:26.51\00:17:28.34
was so significant is
because he had to lead a people
00:17:28.38\00:17:31.65
who for 400 years in bondage
00:17:31.68\00:17:34.78
had to learn and
relearn about God.
00:17:34.82\00:17:37.29
They had to see God move
through the life of Moses.
00:17:37.32\00:17:40.36
And the amazing
miracles God performed
00:17:40.39\00:17:42.66
through his obedient
servant increased their belief,
00:17:42.69\00:17:46.23
until that experience
00:17:46.26\00:17:48.10
when he decided
to veer off course,
00:17:48.13\00:17:50.47
and not exercise belief.
00:17:50.50\00:17:51.90
Now, why is belief
so vitally important?
00:17:51.93\00:17:54.24
Mark 9:23.
00:17:54.27\00:17:56.94
Mark 9:23, "If you can believe,
00:17:56.97\00:18:02.31
all things are
possible to him who believes."
00:18:02.34\00:18:08.22
Notice it didn't
say you're doing,
00:18:08.25\00:18:09.75
it is to simply say you
have to be the one to believe.
00:18:09.78\00:18:12.52
And we go to now
to the story of Moses
00:18:12.55\00:18:16.86
and his leadership.
00:18:16.89\00:18:18.23
And Jill touched on
that, but let's just go through
00:18:18.26\00:18:19.79
some of the
details of the story.
00:18:19.83\00:18:21.26
Go to Numbers 20:7.
00:18:21.30\00:18:23.67
And you made it
very clear in verse 7,
00:18:23.70\00:18:26.90
"Then the Lord
spoke to Moses, saying,
00:18:26.94\00:18:29.10
'Take the rod,
00:18:29.14\00:18:31.04
you and your brother Aaron
00:18:31.07\00:18:32.57
gather the
congregation together.
00:18:32.61\00:18:34.38
Speak to the
rock," and here's the key,
00:18:34.41\00:18:36.44
"before their eyes."
00:18:36.48\00:18:38.25
It was not just
got in the desert
00:18:38.28\00:18:39.95
by yourself and
speak to the rock,
00:18:39.98\00:18:41.65
what he was about to do
00:18:41.68\00:18:43.02
in the presence of the
people will either say,
00:18:43.05\00:18:44.82
I believe God, or
I don't believe Him.
00:18:44.85\00:18:47.66
So his sin wasn't localized.
00:18:47.69\00:18:49.69
It wasn't just
between him and God,
00:18:49.72\00:18:51.33
he affected the way
the people believed.
00:18:51.36\00:18:53.23
And as a leader, what you do
in public will affect the way
00:18:53.26\00:18:56.10
that people believe in God,
00:18:56.13\00:18:58.43
whether or not they believe,
00:18:58.47\00:18:59.80
well, if our pastor
doesn't believe God,
00:18:59.83\00:19:01.17
why should we?
00:19:01.20\00:19:02.54
And so in that context,
Moses had to represent God.
00:19:02.57\00:19:05.34
And those three
words before their eyes
00:19:05.37\00:19:08.21
is the key aspect of the story.
00:19:08.24\00:19:10.48
It goes on.
00:19:10.51\00:19:11.85
"And if you do
that before their eyes,
00:19:11.88\00:19:13.78
I will yield its water,
and it will yield its water,
00:19:13.82\00:19:16.45
thus you shall bring
water for them out of the rock.
00:19:16.48\00:19:19.29
God even gave Moses the credit.
00:19:19.32\00:19:22.09
And so sometimes
God does certain things
00:19:22.12\00:19:24.63
that we know He did.
00:19:24.66\00:19:26.33
But the people say,
"Good job, Pastor Lomacang,"
00:19:26.36\00:19:29.03
and you gonna
say, "That wasn't me."
00:19:29.06\00:19:31.63
I was in New York
City a few years ago,
00:19:31.67\00:19:34.17
and I preached
for a camp meeting,
00:19:34.20\00:19:35.57
people started calling me
00:19:35.60\00:19:36.94
and I was so pleased
to hear somebody say,
00:19:36.97\00:19:39.04
"I know that wasn't you.
00:19:39.07\00:19:41.14
Even your voice was different."
00:19:41.18\00:19:42.51
My sister said to my wife,
00:19:42.54\00:19:44.38
"I've heard my
brother all my life.
00:19:44.41\00:19:46.35
That was not my brother."
00:19:46.38\00:19:47.85
And Angie's sister
call, "You may live with him,
00:19:47.88\00:19:50.32
but I want to tell
you that was not your...
00:19:50.35\00:19:51.82
That was not John."
00:19:51.85\00:19:53.39
And so, it was so encouraging
00:19:53.42\00:19:54.89
to let that burden off
of my shoulder and say,
00:19:54.92\00:19:56.89
"God, I committed myself
to You and that was You."
00:19:56.93\00:20:00.36
We've got to keep in
mind anything that is great,
00:20:00.40\00:20:02.63
give the glory to God.
00:20:02.66\00:20:04.20
Anything that causes fumblings
and bumblings like I've...
00:20:04.23\00:20:06.74
If I said, "Whatever
you hear that's good,
00:20:06.77\00:20:08.77
give it to God,
wherever there are falterings,
00:20:08.80\00:20:11.97
contribute that to me,
00:20:12.01\00:20:13.34
because God
never makes a mistake."
00:20:13.38\00:20:14.71
What did Moses do?
00:20:14.74\00:20:16.11
Verse 9, he says,
"And Moses took the rod
00:20:16.14\00:20:19.25
from before the
Lord as He commanded him.
00:20:19.28\00:20:22.25
And Moses and Aaron
00:20:22.28\00:20:23.62
gathered the assembly
together before the rock,
00:20:23.65\00:20:26.49
and he said to them,
'Hear now, you rebels!"'
00:20:26.52\00:20:29.99
He was probably upset.
00:20:30.03\00:20:31.36
Don't wake up upset.
00:20:31.39\00:20:32.73
Don't let your
anger translate into doing
00:20:32.76\00:20:35.66
what God does not approve.
00:20:35.70\00:20:37.40
"Must we bring for you,
water for you out of the rock?
00:20:37.43\00:20:41.47
Then Moses lifted his hand
00:20:41.50\00:20:43.57
and struck the
rock twice with his rod,
00:20:43.61\00:20:46.61
and water came out abundantly,
00:20:46.64\00:20:48.34
and the congregation
and their animals drank."
00:20:48.38\00:20:50.91
Now, here's something,
00:20:50.95\00:20:52.35
even though he didn't
do what God told him to do,
00:20:52.38\00:20:56.02
God did what He said He would.
00:20:56.05\00:20:58.12
Sometimes God
works in spite of us,
00:20:58.15\00:21:00.76
not in light of us.
00:21:00.79\00:21:02.42
God said, "I cannot
let your foolishness
00:21:02.46\00:21:05.03
hinder the people's blessings.
00:21:05.06\00:21:06.86
So if you're a leader,
and you do something foolish,
00:21:06.90\00:21:09.96
and the people
still get blessed,
00:21:10.00\00:21:11.73
God is going to deal with you.
00:21:11.77\00:21:13.77
But He's not going to hold,
00:21:13.80\00:21:15.14
withhold His
blessings from the people.
00:21:15.17\00:21:17.41
So I want to bring
out four particular points
00:21:17.44\00:21:19.47
that I saw on the story.
00:21:19.51\00:21:20.84
There's so much more,
00:21:20.88\00:21:22.21
but I was thankful that
Jill covered a lot of that.
00:21:22.24\00:21:23.91
But let me talk
about four things.
00:21:23.95\00:21:25.81
I think the infractions of Moses
00:21:25.85\00:21:28.02
can be broken down
to these four areas.
00:21:28.05\00:21:30.82
Let's go to Hebrews 11:6.
00:21:30.85\00:21:33.05
Hebrews 11:6.
00:21:33.09\00:21:34.66
Now, the
Israelites did a lot of things
00:21:34.69\00:21:36.73
that anybody
would get upset with.
00:21:36.76\00:21:39.43
But Moses as a leader
00:21:39.46\00:21:40.86
didn't have the
luxury of allowing his anger
00:21:40.90\00:21:43.87
to be displayed publicly.
00:21:43.90\00:21:45.30
And you know what?
00:21:45.33\00:21:46.67
I've worked hard
on that for the years
00:21:46.70\00:21:48.04
I've been here at 3ABN.
00:21:48.07\00:21:49.87
There are some people
that have seen me angry,
00:21:49.90\00:21:51.34
but I never allow that
anger to pour into the pulpit.
00:21:51.37\00:21:53.94
I've come in and had
private conversations
00:21:53.98\00:21:55.58
to allow God to work with me
00:21:55.61\00:21:57.65
through it with other leaders,
00:21:57.68\00:21:59.15
but I've not
allowed my leadership
00:21:59.18\00:22:00.52
to go ahead and
affect the congregation.
00:22:00.55\00:22:01.92
So, you know, I'm
done with you guys.
00:22:01.95\00:22:03.28
I'm out of here.
00:22:03.32\00:22:04.65
You know, what do you do?
00:22:04.69\00:22:06.02
Because I know that if
the shepherd is stricken,
00:22:06.05\00:22:09.69
the sheep would scatter.
00:22:09.72\00:22:11.66
The first one,
Hebrews 11:6, what happened?
00:22:11.69\00:22:14.20
A lack of faith?
00:22:14.23\00:22:15.56
Why is it so important?
00:22:15.60\00:22:16.93
"But without faith
00:22:16.97\00:22:18.30
it is impossible to please Him."
00:22:18.33\00:22:19.73
Moses had to
exercise faith to please God.
00:22:19.77\00:22:22.57
"For he who comes to
God must believe that He is,
00:22:22.60\00:22:25.17
and that He is a
rewarder of those
00:22:25.21\00:22:27.44
who diligently seek Him."
00:22:27.48\00:22:29.01
Moses should have
sought God in that moment
00:22:29.04\00:22:31.45
when it would
affect other people
00:22:31.48\00:22:32.88
by simply doing what God said.
00:22:32.91\00:22:34.65
The second one
was lack of faith.
00:22:34.68\00:22:36.35
And I just shared
that in Hebrews 11:6.
00:22:36.38\00:22:39.89
I actually read that
one, let's go to disobedience,
00:22:39.92\00:22:42.12
James 4:17, the
second one, disobedience.
00:22:42.16\00:22:45.93
"Therefore, to him
who knows to do good
00:22:45.96\00:22:49.20
and does not do
it, to him it is sin."
00:22:49.23\00:22:53.20
What I do wrong may not be
a sin for James or for Jill,
00:22:53.23\00:22:56.04
because God didn't
call them to do it.
00:22:56.07\00:22:57.84
If God has called
me to do something,
00:22:57.87\00:22:59.51
and I choose not to do it,
00:22:59.54\00:23:00.88
it affects my
relationship with God.
00:23:00.91\00:23:02.68
He said, "You know, I
told you to speak to the rock.
00:23:02.71\00:23:04.38
I didn't tell Jill to do it.
00:23:04.41\00:23:05.75
I didn't tell James
to do it or anybody else.
00:23:05.78\00:23:07.88
I told you to speak to the rock.
00:23:07.92\00:23:09.38
You can't tell
Jill to speak the rock
00:23:09.42\00:23:10.99
because I didn't
call Jill to do that.
00:23:11.02\00:23:12.65
Even if she speaks,
I'm not going to respond
00:23:12.69\00:23:14.36
because I told you to do it."
00:23:14.39\00:23:15.72
Never pass off
your responsibility
00:23:15.76\00:23:18.03
when God has
called you personally.
00:23:18.06\00:23:20.43
Third one, obedience, James.
00:23:20.46\00:23:22.70
Third one, don't seek
to excuse your behavior.
00:23:22.73\00:23:25.47
Ecclesiastes 5:6,
"Do not let your mouth
00:23:25.50\00:23:30.37
cause your flesh to sin,
00:23:30.41\00:23:32.31
nor say before
the messenger of God
00:23:32.34\00:23:34.84
that it was an error.
00:23:34.88\00:23:36.21
Why should God be
angry at your excuse
00:23:36.24\00:23:38.88
and destroy the
works of your hands?"
00:23:38.91\00:23:40.82
Moses lost a lot that day.
00:23:40.85\00:23:43.49
In a moment, he
could have gained a lot.
00:23:43.52\00:23:46.52
He could have
gained more than he lost
00:23:46.55\00:23:48.22
if he had only been obedient
in that slice of a moment.
00:23:48.26\00:23:52.16
And lastly, Hebrews 3:12,
00:23:52.19\00:23:54.86
and this is what
happened to Israel,
00:23:54.90\00:23:56.56
his unbelief affected them.
00:23:56.60\00:23:58.57
And notice the end of the story.
00:23:58.60\00:24:00.50
Unbelief is an
external testament against God.
00:24:00.54\00:24:03.71
Hebrews 3:12, "Beware, brethren,
00:24:03.74\00:24:06.24
lest there be in any of
you an evil heart of unbelief
00:24:06.27\00:24:11.08
in departing
from the living God."
00:24:11.11\00:24:13.72
In that moment of unbelief,
00:24:13.75\00:24:15.32
Moses withdrew himself from God.
00:24:15.35\00:24:17.85
And 40 years
later, the Bible says
00:24:17.89\00:24:20.46
they didn't even enter
in because of unbelief.
00:24:20.49\00:24:23.16
Amen.
00:24:23.19\00:24:24.53
Thank you so much, Pastor John.
00:24:24.56\00:24:26.09
Don't go away.
We'll be right back.

00:24:58.73\00:25:02.76
Welcome back to
lesson number 13,
00:25:02.80\00:25:04.60
The Resurrection of Moses.
00:25:04.63\00:25:05.97
And we're going to toss it
00:25:06.00\00:25:07.34
over to Pastor
James in Tuesday's lesson.
00:25:07.37\00:25:08.70
All right.
00:25:08.74\00:25:10.07
I have today's lesson, and
that is The Death of Moses.
00:25:10.11\00:25:12.24
My name is James Rafferty,
00:25:12.27\00:25:14.08
and we're going to
get right into the lesson.
00:25:14.11\00:25:15.48
Basically, it's a
summary or excuse me,
00:25:15.51\00:25:18.01
basically, we're
looking in this week's lesson
00:25:18.05\00:25:20.55
at Deuteronomy Chapter 34.
00:25:20.58\00:25:22.48
And just to summarize it,
00:25:22.52\00:25:23.85
it's actually
the shortest chapter
00:25:23.89\00:25:25.29
in the entire
Book of Deuteronomy.
00:25:25.32\00:25:26.86
And it's talking about
00:25:26.89\00:25:28.22
the death of
this giant of a man,
00:25:28.26\00:25:29.86
which tells us how much God,
00:25:29.89\00:25:31.46
how much time God
really wants to spend on death,
00:25:31.49\00:25:33.36
not very much.
00:25:33.40\00:25:34.73
He wants to talk about life,
00:25:34.76\00:25:36.10
he wants to talk about
goodness and happiness,
00:25:36.13\00:25:38.30
and a future and a
hope, not about death.
00:25:38.33\00:25:40.77
But this chapter is
full of lessons for us.
00:25:40.80\00:25:45.31
It's powerful when
you think about it,
00:25:45.34\00:25:46.91
because you, you
look at this chapter,
00:25:46.94\00:25:49.18
these 12 verses here,
00:25:49.21\00:25:50.78
and you just think
about the parallels
00:25:50.81\00:25:53.31
between Moses and
the life of Christ,
00:25:53.35\00:25:56.02
because in many ways,
Moses was a type of Christ.
00:25:56.05\00:25:59.95
And we see that
all through the Bible,
00:25:59.99\00:26:01.32
we see a lot of people
that are types of Christ,
00:26:01.36\00:26:02.92
but I think more
than any other person...
00:26:02.96\00:26:04.36
Explain what that word means
because we had a viewer ask.
00:26:04.39\00:26:07.36
Oh, okay, it's,
the word type means
00:26:07.40\00:26:10.07
he is an example or
illustration of Christ.
00:26:10.10\00:26:14.74
He is representing Christ
in the way that he either lived
00:26:14.77\00:26:19.61
or died or walked or talked
00:26:19.64\00:26:21.31
or so that when
you look at Moses,
00:26:21.34\00:26:23.48
you see Jesus, you
see things that Jesus did,
00:26:23.51\00:26:26.38
or the way Jesus
experienced life.
00:26:26.41\00:26:28.32
And we're going to
see that, for example,
00:26:28.35\00:26:31.49
in relation to what
happens in Chapter 34,
00:26:31.52\00:26:35.02
when Moses is
taken up into the mount,
00:26:35.06\00:26:37.56
Mount Pisgah, is
where he ends up,
00:26:37.59\00:26:39.83
and God shows him
the entire Promised Land,
00:26:39.86\00:26:43.03
He shows him everything.
00:26:43.06\00:26:44.77
And then He tells him,
"You know, you can't go in,
00:26:44.80\00:26:46.50
but I'm just going
to show this to you.
00:26:46.53\00:26:48.90
Because of your sin,
00:26:48.94\00:26:50.27
you're going to have to
die on this side of it."
00:26:50.31\00:26:51.64
And now we know that,
00:26:51.67\00:26:53.01
that Jesus on the
Mount of Transfiguration
00:26:53.04\00:26:56.71
was shown all that his
death would accomplish.
00:26:56.75\00:27:00.85
He was glorified, He
had Moses on one side,
00:27:00.88\00:27:03.02
Elijah on the other side,
00:27:03.05\00:27:04.39
so He's given this
picture up in the mountains,
00:27:04.42\00:27:05.75
He's given this picture
00:27:05.79\00:27:07.12
of what His
death was accomplished.
00:27:07.16\00:27:08.49
Moses was given a
picture of all that his life
00:27:08.52\00:27:11.03
had accomplished for
his people even though,
00:27:11.06\00:27:13.19
of course, Moses
couldn't go in, we know Christ,
00:27:13.23\00:27:15.06
of course, is going
to be with us in heaven.
00:27:15.10\00:27:16.93
Of course, Moses is
gonna be with us in heaven.
00:27:16.97\00:27:18.40
Okay, I'm
getting off track here,
00:27:18.43\00:27:20.10
but let me get back on track.
00:27:20.14\00:27:21.47
Another interesting insight
about Moses is his death age.
00:27:21.50\00:27:26.31
When he died, he
was 120 years old.
00:27:26.34\00:27:30.85
He, his...
00:27:30.88\00:27:32.21
It says, the Bible
says his eyes were not dim.
00:27:32.25\00:27:34.52
That is He didn't
need glasses, right?
00:27:34.55\00:27:36.28
His eyes weren't dim.
00:27:36.32\00:27:37.65
He didn't need glasses
to read the fine print.
00:27:37.69\00:27:39.25
And his vital force was
not abated or diminished.
00:27:39.29\00:27:44.03
Okay, that's verse 7
of Deuteronomy Chapter 34.
00:27:44.06\00:27:46.93
So, if that's the
case, how did Moses die?
00:27:46.96\00:27:50.07
I mean, evidently,
Moses was laid to rest
00:27:50.10\00:27:53.10
by the hand of God.
00:27:53.13\00:27:54.84
The Romans and the Jews
killed the body of Christ,
00:27:54.87\00:27:59.41
but how did Christ die?
00:27:59.44\00:28:01.01
Christ was laid to
rest by the hand of God.
00:28:01.04\00:28:04.58
So both of them were laid
to rest by the hand of God.
00:28:04.61\00:28:07.38
Christ, it says, was
forsaken by the hand of God.
00:28:07.42\00:28:10.09
Now, number three,
point number three.
00:28:10.12\00:28:11.59
In fact, the word
Pisgah actually means
00:28:11.62\00:28:14.46
where Moses died actually
comes from the Hebrew root word,
00:28:14.49\00:28:17.23
which means to
cut off, to cut off.
00:28:17.26\00:28:20.30
And Christ who
became a sin for us
00:28:20.33\00:28:22.40
was also cut off,
Psalm 88 tells us.
00:28:22.43\00:28:25.73
Number four, why did Moses die?
00:28:25.77\00:28:28.20
And why did Christ die?
00:28:28.24\00:28:30.24
Both Moses and Christ died
00:28:30.27\00:28:31.77
because sin
could not be excused.
00:28:31.81\00:28:35.64
Number five, Moses died
for the sin he committed
00:28:35.68\00:28:39.01
because of the
people and Christ died
00:28:39.05\00:28:41.15
for the sin we committed.
00:28:41.18\00:28:43.75
He also died
because of the people.
00:28:43.79\00:28:47.32
Number six, why did Moses die?
00:28:47.36\00:28:48.86
Because he sinned.
00:28:48.89\00:28:50.43
Why did Christ die?
00:28:50.46\00:28:51.79
Because we sinned and
he according to the Bible,
00:28:51.83\00:28:54.46
2 Corinthians 5:21,
Jill, He became sin for us.
00:28:54.50\00:28:58.53
That's right.
00:28:58.57\00:29:00.07
So number seven, why
was Moses death necessary?
00:29:00.10\00:29:04.17
Well, because God
cannot compromise with sin.
00:29:04.21\00:29:06.27
Why was
Christ's death necessary?
00:29:06.31\00:29:08.84
Because God cannot compromise.
00:29:08.88\00:29:11.71
Number eight, why did Moses...
What did Moses' death prove?
00:29:11.75\00:29:15.05
Moses' death
prove that God is just.
00:29:15.08\00:29:18.19
What did Christ's death prove?
00:29:18.22\00:29:19.59
Christ's death
prove that God is just.
00:29:19.62\00:29:23.22
Number nine, Moses and
Christ died because of sin.
00:29:23.26\00:29:26.53
And therefore the devil
00:29:26.56\00:29:28.53
contended over
the body of Moses,
00:29:28.56\00:29:31.33
and the devil contended
over the body of Christ,
00:29:31.37\00:29:35.40
put a Roman guard
there, sealed up the tomb,
00:29:35.44\00:29:37.41
tried to stop Him
from being resurrected.
00:29:37.44\00:29:39.27
Number 10, despite
the devil's devices,
00:29:39.31\00:29:41.78
both Moses and
Christ were resurrected
00:29:41.81\00:29:44.38
and both encouraged God's people
00:29:44.41\00:29:47.38
after their resurrection.
00:29:47.42\00:29:48.88
I'm sure someone else
00:29:48.92\00:29:50.25
is gonna talk a
little bit more about this.
00:29:50.29\00:29:51.62
But Moses, of course,
encouraged God's people
00:29:51.65\00:29:53.56
at the Transfiguration,
00:29:53.59\00:29:55.19
and Christ, of course,
was there with His people
00:29:55.22\00:29:58.06
for 40 days
after His resurrection.
00:29:58.09\00:29:59.93
Number 11, Moses and Christ
00:29:59.96\00:30:01.36
both walked to
their death alone.
00:30:01.40\00:30:04.63
Moses by
himself to Mount Pisgah,
00:30:04.67\00:30:06.70
Christ whose disciples slept
00:30:06.74\00:30:09.20
and then deserted Him in
the last hours of His life.
00:30:09.24\00:30:12.74
Number 12,
Moses pleaded with God
00:30:12.77\00:30:14.94
to let him live on and
go into the Promised Land.
00:30:14.98\00:30:17.61
But ultimately,
00:30:17.65\00:30:19.25
Moses surrendered to God's will.
00:30:19.28\00:30:21.95
Three times Christ prayed,
you're ahead of me there,
00:30:21.98\00:30:25.69
three times Christ...
00:30:25.72\00:30:27.06
Okay, I'm handing this to Ryan,
00:30:27.09\00:30:28.42
three times Christ prayed
00:30:28.46\00:30:29.79
to let the cup of
death pass from him.
00:30:29.82\00:30:31.49
But ultimately,
00:30:31.53\00:30:32.86
Christ
surrendered to God's will.
00:30:32.89\00:30:35.16
Number 13, both were
sorely tried by the people
00:30:35.20\00:30:37.83
they sought to help.
00:30:37.87\00:30:39.20
They were threatened.
00:30:39.23\00:30:41.27
But was being stoned to
death, Moses and Jesus caught,
00:30:41.30\00:30:44.27
the people were constantly
murmuring against them, right?
00:30:44.31\00:30:46.57
Number 14, both Moses and Jesus
00:30:46.61\00:30:48.88
willingly
stepped away from glory,
00:30:48.91\00:30:51.41
away from honor,
00:30:51.45\00:30:52.81
away from the riches
00:30:52.85\00:30:55.88
that they had each one
of them in their own right,
00:30:55.92\00:30:58.59
and they chose a
life of hardship,
00:30:58.62\00:31:00.06
a life of affliction,
00:31:00.09\00:31:01.42
so that they could
deliver God's people.
00:31:01.46\00:31:04.03
Number 15, both face betrayal
00:31:04.06\00:31:06.06
from those that
were closest to them,
00:31:06.09\00:31:07.43
Miriam and Aaron,
Christ's disciples.
00:31:07.46\00:31:09.66
Number 16, both
were highly exalted
00:31:09.70\00:31:11.97
by the people
after they were gone.
00:31:12.00\00:31:14.67
People who
brought them so much grief
00:31:14.70\00:31:16.54
during their lives, right?
00:31:16.57\00:31:18.47
Number 17, Moses
laid his hand on Joshua,
00:31:18.51\00:31:22.48
and the Spirit of
God that Moses possessed
00:31:22.51\00:31:24.75
was passed on to
Joshua at Moses' death.
00:31:24.78\00:31:27.38
Jesus breathed
upon His disciples
00:31:27.42\00:31:30.05
and the Spirit of God
that Christ possessed,
00:31:30.09\00:31:31.99
was passed on to His disciples
00:31:32.02\00:31:33.62
after His death.
00:31:33.66\00:31:34.99
Number 16,
00:31:35.02\00:31:36.36
both Moses and Christ
knew the Lord face to face.
00:31:36.39\00:31:40.60
That was number
18, not number 16.
00:31:40.63\00:31:42.60
Number 19, both Moses and Christ
00:31:42.63\00:31:44.73
were willing to have
their own lives blotted out,
00:31:44.77\00:31:47.60
so the rebellious
people could be forgiven.
00:31:47.64\00:31:50.91
And finally, number 20,
00:31:50.94\00:31:52.57
the life and the death and
the resurrection experience
00:31:52.61\00:31:55.64
of both Moses and
Christ reveals the very essence
00:31:55.68\00:31:59.38
of the everlasting gospel,
00:31:59.41\00:32:01.12
and it will be the
praise and the song
00:32:01.15\00:32:03.89
of the redeemed
throughout all eternity.
00:32:03.92\00:32:05.52
Let's look at the verses
there in Revelation Chapter 15.
00:32:05.55\00:32:08.12
Revelation 15:2,
00:32:08.16\00:32:10.43
"And I saw as it were a sea
of glass mingled with fire."
00:32:10.46\00:32:13.50
Whoo, glass in fire,
00:32:13.53\00:32:14.86
that sounds kind of scary.
00:32:14.90\00:32:16.23
"And them that had gotten
the victory over the beast,
00:32:16.26\00:32:18.47
and over his
image, and over his mark,
00:32:18.50\00:32:20.34
and over the number of his name,
00:32:20.37\00:32:21.77
stand on the sea of
glass, mingled with fire,
00:32:21.80\00:32:24.47
having the harps of God.
00:32:24.51\00:32:27.31
And they sing the song of
Moses and the Lamb," verse 3,
00:32:27.34\00:32:30.18
"the servant of God," excuse me,
00:32:30.21\00:32:32.35
"and they sing the song of Moses
00:32:32.38\00:32:33.72
the servant of God
and the song of the Lamb,
00:32:33.75\00:32:35.08
saying, 'Great and
marvelous are thy works,
00:32:35.12\00:32:37.52
Lord God Almighty.'"
00:32:37.55\00:32:38.89
That's what John
was sharing with us.
00:32:38.92\00:32:40.26
"Just and true are thy
ways, thy King of saints."
00:32:40.29\00:32:42.79
They figured this
out now, right, verse 4,
00:32:42.82\00:32:44.79
"Who shall not fear thee,
O Lord, and glorify thy name?
00:32:44.83\00:32:48.60
For thou only art holy:
00:32:48.63\00:32:50.87
for all nations shall
come and worship before thee,
00:32:50.90\00:32:53.67
for thy judgments
are made manifest."
00:32:53.70\00:32:56.87
You know, we
can't help but notice
00:32:56.91\00:32:58.81
in this previous stanza
00:32:58.84\00:33:00.54
of the song of
Moses and the Lamb,
00:33:00.58\00:33:03.71
a reflection of the experience
00:33:03.75\00:33:05.55
of the
everlasting gospel, right?
00:33:05.58\00:33:07.28
It's proclaimed in
the previous chapter,
00:33:07.32\00:33:08.92
Chapter 14, where
it says, "Fear God,
00:33:08.95\00:33:11.59
give glory to him,
00:33:11.62\00:33:12.95
for the hour of his
judgment is come and worship him
00:33:12.99\00:33:14.92
that made heaven
and earth and the seas
00:33:14.96\00:33:16.66
and the fountains of waters."
00:33:16.69\00:33:18.03
That's right.
00:33:18.06\00:33:19.39
And that's exactly
what we see taking place
00:33:19.43\00:33:20.76
in the song of Moses and
this needs to be our song.
00:33:20.80\00:33:23.50
I want to share something,
00:33:23.53\00:33:25.00
from what I
considered to be my opinion,
00:33:25.03\00:33:26.77
inspired
commentary on the Bible.
00:33:26.80\00:33:29.10
This is a book called
Patriarchs and Prophets.
00:33:29.14\00:33:31.41
And this statement
is found on page 470.
00:33:31.44\00:33:34.78
It's talking
about Moses, it says,
00:33:34.81\00:33:36.14
"That very day there
came to Moses the command,
00:33:36.18\00:33:38.75
'Get thee up
unto the Mount Nebo,
00:33:38.78\00:33:40.55
and behold the land of Canaan,
00:33:40.58\00:33:42.62
which I give unto the children
of Israel for a possession:
00:33:42.65\00:33:45.85
and die in the mount
whither thou goest up,
00:33:45.89\00:33:48.36
and be gathered
unto thy people.'
00:33:48.39\00:33:50.79
Moses had left the camp,
00:33:50.83\00:33:52.46
in obedience to
the divine summons,
00:33:52.49\00:33:54.26
to commune with God,
00:33:54.30\00:33:56.46
excuse me, Moses
had often left the camp,
00:33:56.50\00:33:59.40
in obedience to
the divine summons,
00:33:59.43\00:34:00.97
to commune with God,
00:34:01.00\00:34:03.24
but he was now to depart
00:34:03.27\00:34:04.74
on a new and mysterious errand.
00:34:04.77\00:34:07.64
He must go forth
to resign his life
00:34:07.68\00:34:09.71
into the hands of his Creator.
00:34:09.74\00:34:11.45
Moses knew that
he was to die alone,
00:34:17.05\00:34:20.12
no earthly friend would be
permitted to minister to him
00:34:20.16\00:34:23.93
in the last hours.
00:34:23.96\00:34:26.39
There was a
mystery and awfulness
00:34:26.43\00:34:27.96
about the scene before him,
00:34:28.00\00:34:29.33
from which his heart shrank.
00:34:29.36\00:34:31.27
The severest
trial was his separation
00:34:31.30\00:34:33.07
from the people
of his care and love,
00:34:33.10\00:34:34.77
the people with whom
his interest and his life
00:34:34.80\00:34:36.77
had so long been united.
00:34:36.81\00:34:38.94
But he had learned to trust God,
00:34:38.97\00:34:40.74
and with unquestioning faith
00:34:40.78\00:34:43.04
he committed
himself and his people
00:34:43.08\00:34:46.15
to God's love and mercy.
00:34:46.18\00:34:49.68
That's right.
00:34:49.72\00:34:51.65
So, dear
listeners, it's our hope,
00:34:51.69\00:34:53.96
as we're
closing out this amazing
00:34:53.99\00:34:56.46
Sabbath School lesson
on the Book of Deuteronomy,
00:34:56.49\00:34:58.86
that the song of
Moses and the Lamb
00:34:58.89\00:35:00.90
will be the song
of our own experience,
00:35:00.93\00:35:03.90
the experience
of putting our faith
00:35:03.93\00:35:05.77
and our trust
in a God who truly,
00:35:05.80\00:35:07.80
truly loves us.
00:35:07.84\00:35:09.17
That's right. Amen.
00:35:09.20\00:35:10.54
Amen. Thank you.
00:35:10.57\00:35:12.04
Thank you.
00:35:12.07\00:35:13.41
I'm Shelley Quinn.
00:35:13.44\00:35:16.58
And my lesson is Wednesday,
00:35:16.61\00:35:20.38
The Resurrection of Moses.
00:35:20.42\00:35:23.22
So we see as the Bible said,
00:35:23.25\00:35:26.76
Moses was the meekest
man on earth and meek,
00:35:26.79\00:35:31.13
it means he was humble.
00:35:31.16\00:35:32.93
He was... Humility
is to depend on God.
00:35:32.96\00:35:38.07
But what happened?
00:35:38.10\00:35:39.70
He got angry.
00:35:39.73\00:35:41.64
He acted presumptuously.
00:35:41.67\00:35:44.77
And he disobeyed God.
00:35:44.81\00:35:46.17
Now that's a warning to us. Yes.
00:35:46.21\00:35:48.41
In Romans 12:21.
00:35:48.44\00:35:50.68
Paul says, "Do not
be overcome by evil,
00:35:50.71\00:35:55.42
but overcome evil with good."
00:35:55.45\00:35:58.22
And he told the
Ephesians in 4:26, he said,
00:35:58.25\00:36:03.59
"Hey, be angry, do not say,
00:36:03.63\00:36:06.19
don't let the sun
go down on your wrath."
00:36:06.23\00:36:10.83
So as Jill was talking about,
00:36:10.87\00:36:13.34
we need to
understand our area of weakness
00:36:13.37\00:36:18.31
because here's Moses,
00:36:18.34\00:36:20.14
His faithful servant of God,
00:36:20.18\00:36:23.08
who now has disobeyed
in a moment of craziness.
00:36:23.11\00:36:28.32
And I know God forgave him,
00:36:28.35\00:36:30.35
but there were
consequences of the sin.
00:36:30.39\00:36:32.55
He died up on Mount
Nebo at the top of to Pisgah
00:36:32.59\00:36:38.26
without entering
the Promised Land.
00:36:38.29\00:36:40.63
Deuteronomy 34:5-6,
00:36:40.66\00:36:43.60
here is this
amazing servant of God.
00:36:43.63\00:36:46.94
And here's what it
says, Deuteronomy 34:5 says,
00:36:46.97\00:36:50.34
"Moses the servant of the Lord
died there in the land of Moab,
00:36:50.37\00:36:54.98
according to the
word of the Lord."
00:36:55.01\00:36:57.21
Verse 6, "And he, the Lord,
00:36:57.25\00:37:00.95
buried him in a
valley in the land of Moab,
00:37:00.98\00:37:05.59
opposite Beth Peor,
00:37:05.62\00:37:07.72
but no one knows
his grave to this day."
00:37:07.76\00:37:12.63
Have you heard
00:37:12.66\00:37:14.10
of the Tomb of
the Unknown Soldier
00:37:14.13\00:37:16.56
that is in
Arlington National Cemetery?
00:37:16.60\00:37:19.40
It's across the
Potomac from Washington DC.
00:37:19.43\00:37:22.67
This is just the opposite.
00:37:22.70\00:37:24.87
This is the tomb of
00:37:24.91\00:37:30.01
and I would say it's
the unknown burial plot
00:37:30.05\00:37:34.05
or the unknown tomb
00:37:34.08\00:37:35.95
of the most
known soldier of God.
00:37:35.98\00:37:39.02
He was secretly buried by God
00:37:39.05\00:37:42.86
in a place that no man knew.
00:37:42.89\00:37:45.86
And here's the thing.
00:37:45.89\00:37:47.70
He died, God buried him.
00:37:47.73\00:37:50.57
The people wept 30
days and life went on.
00:37:50.60\00:37:56.10
But if you're old
enough to remember Paul Harvey,
00:37:56.14\00:37:59.47
the radio host and personality.
00:37:59.51\00:38:04.88
His famous line was,
00:38:04.91\00:38:06.72
"Stay tuned for
the rest of the story."
00:38:06.75\00:38:09.95
And Moses' death was
not the final chapter
00:38:09.98\00:38:14.82
of Moses' life.
00:38:14.86\00:38:16.19
We see him on the
Mount of Transfiguration.
00:38:16.22\00:38:19.93
He's alive and well.
00:38:19.96\00:38:21.70
He's come down to
Jesus to encourage him.
00:38:21.73\00:38:25.60
In Matthew
17:1-3, "Jesus took Peter,
00:38:25.63\00:38:29.07
James and John up
on a high mountain
00:38:29.10\00:38:31.34
by themselves,
00:38:31.37\00:38:32.71
and He was transfigured."
00:38:32.74\00:38:34.44
There was a transformation
there right before their eyes.
00:38:34.48\00:38:38.21
And it says, "His
face shone like the sun,
00:38:38.25\00:38:41.52
and his clothes became
as white as the light."
00:38:41.55\00:38:44.12
And verse 3 says, "Behold,
00:38:44.15\00:38:47.46
Moses and Elijah
appeared to them,
00:38:47.49\00:38:52.13
talking to Jesus."
00:38:52.16\00:38:54.93
Now, we can
explain Elijah's presence
00:38:54.96\00:38:58.83
on the Mount of Transfiguration
00:38:58.87\00:39:00.94
because 2 Kings 2:11-12, says,
00:39:00.97\00:39:04.27
"Elijah was taken
up in a whirlwind,
00:39:04.31\00:39:08.31
he was translated."
00:39:08.34\00:39:10.35
That means he didn't die
before he went to heaven.
00:39:10.38\00:39:14.98
There was the
chariots of fire came down,
00:39:15.02\00:39:18.55
they got him and
they escorted him
00:39:18.59\00:39:21.59
to heaven.
00:39:21.62\00:39:23.93
So how do we
account for Moses' presence?
00:39:23.96\00:39:28.26
Well, you know,
the Bible teaches
00:39:28.30\00:39:30.67
that the dead know nothing.
00:39:30.70\00:39:32.63
The Bible teaches
that we rest in our grave,
00:39:32.67\00:39:36.67
until the resurrection.
00:39:36.71\00:39:38.54
1 Corinthians
15:52-54, we covered it
00:39:38.57\00:39:42.08
during the last lesson,
we do not put on immortality.
00:39:42.11\00:39:46.75
We said, God alone
is immortal right now,
00:39:46.78\00:39:49.38
that's what the Bible says.
00:39:49.42\00:39:51.55
But we don't put on
immortality till Christ returns.
00:39:51.59\00:39:56.83
So Moses is dead and buried.
00:39:56.86\00:40:00.96
What happened?
00:40:01.00\00:40:02.56
Well, on the Mount
of Transfiguration,
00:40:02.60\00:40:05.77
Elijah
represented all those people
00:40:05.80\00:40:08.60
who will be alive
when Jesus comes in,
00:40:08.64\00:40:11.24
they're translated to heaven.
00:40:11.27\00:40:13.21
And Moses was there
to represent all those
00:40:13.24\00:40:16.95
who are resurrected
at the Second Coming
00:40:16.98\00:40:20.58
because Moses was
resurrected by Jesus Christ.
00:40:20.62\00:40:23.52
That's right.
00:40:23.55\00:40:24.89
Jude 1:9 says, "Yet
Michael the archangel,
00:40:24.92\00:40:28.46
in contending with the devil,
00:40:28.49\00:40:29.82
when he disputed
about the body of Moses,
00:40:29.86\00:40:34.10
Michael dared
not bring against him
00:40:37.13\00:40:40.37
a reviling accusation,
00:40:40.40\00:40:42.80
but he said, 'The
Lord rebuke you!'"
00:40:42.84\00:40:47.24
You know, doesn't that
remind you of Zechariah 3
00:40:47.28\00:40:49.88
where it says, The Lord's,
00:40:49.91\00:40:52.08
the Lord speaks to
the devil and says,
00:40:52.11\00:40:55.45
"The Lord rebuke you."
00:40:55.48\00:40:57.39
Now, I have to tell you this.
00:40:57.42\00:41:00.02
And if you don't know this,
00:41:00.06\00:41:02.86
I just want to
say please trust me,
00:41:02.89\00:41:06.56
go listen to a sermon.
00:41:06.59\00:41:08.03
I did a sermon
called, I think they titled it
00:41:08.06\00:41:10.60
Erasing Popular Belief
00:41:10.63\00:41:12.73
about Heaven's Archangel.
00:41:12.77\00:41:15.44
But this is my point.
00:41:15.47\00:41:18.04
Michael is another title
for Jesus Christ Himself.
00:41:18.07\00:41:22.78
Now you, if you don't
know that you're going,
00:41:22.81\00:41:24.85
"What did you say?"
00:41:24.88\00:41:26.21
But in the Hebrew, in the Greek,
00:41:26.25\00:41:28.68
the word angel
signifies a messenger.
00:41:28.72\00:41:33.09
In the Old Testament, it's you,
00:41:33.12\00:41:34.96
well, both
Testaments is used of men,
00:41:34.99\00:41:38.06
who are called
angels as messengers of God,
00:41:38.09\00:41:41.96
and it is used
of spiritual beings.
00:41:42.00\00:41:47.70
So angel is not a term
00:41:47.74\00:41:50.57
that denotes the
nature of a being,
00:41:50.61\00:41:54.64
but rather the office.
00:41:54.68\00:41:56.88
It's the position of
the authority and serve
00:41:56.91\00:42:00.32
and the service of
being a messenger sent forth
00:42:00.35\00:42:04.95
to execute God's purposes.
00:42:04.99\00:42:07.12
Now, if you are a
Protestant pastor,
00:42:07.16\00:42:10.26
I'm just almost going to
guess somewhere in your library,
00:42:10.29\00:42:13.16
you have Matthew
Henry's commentary.
00:42:13.19\00:42:16.53
Can we read this real quick?
00:42:16.56\00:42:18.30
Commentary of Malachi
3:1, this is Matthew Henry,
00:42:18.33\00:42:22.77
the famous Bible Commentary.
00:42:22.80\00:42:25.04
He is the
Messenger of the covenant,
00:42:25.07\00:42:26.88
speaking of Jesus or
the angel of the covenant,
00:42:26.91\00:42:29.68
that blessed one
that was sent from heaven
00:42:29.71\00:42:31.68
to negotiate a peace,
00:42:31.71\00:42:33.05
and settle a correspondence,
between God and man.
00:42:33.08\00:42:35.98
He is the angel, the archangel,
the Lord of the angels,
00:42:36.02\00:42:40.52
who received
commission from the Father
00:42:40.56\00:42:42.82
to bring man home to
God by a covenant of grace."
00:42:42.86\00:42:46.46
See, the word ark
00:42:46.49\00:42:48.33
in the original
language means chief,
00:42:48.36\00:42:51.23
principal, greatest, highest.
00:42:51.27\00:42:53.47
So Jesus is the highest
of all of God's messengers.
00:42:53.50\00:42:58.34
He's the captain of the host.
00:42:58.37\00:43:00.01
He is over all the angels
00:43:00.04\00:43:02.78
not because
He's a created being,
00:43:02.81\00:43:04.61
He is God, our Creator God,
00:43:04.65\00:43:08.95
but He disputed with the devil
00:43:08.98\00:43:11.69
over the resurrection of Moses.
00:43:11.72\00:43:15.16
And why did they
have this dispute?
00:43:15.19\00:43:19.93
Well, let's see.
00:43:19.96\00:43:21.30
Was Moses a sinner?
00:43:21.33\00:43:22.66
Yep.
00:43:22.70\00:43:24.03
And when you're a sinner,
00:43:24.07\00:43:25.40
you're under the
power of Satan, aren't you?
00:43:25.43\00:43:28.17
He become a
lawful captive of death.
00:43:28.20\00:43:33.68
But they dispute over his body,
00:43:33.71\00:43:35.88
Christ was now
claiming for Moses,
00:43:35.91\00:43:41.02
the promised resurrection.
00:43:41.05\00:43:42.98
Here's what Clifford Goldstein,
00:43:43.02\00:43:45.99
the author of our
Adult Bible Study says,
00:43:46.02\00:43:51.06
"How could God do
that for a sinner?
00:43:51.09\00:43:54.13
Moses, someone who
had violated the law,
00:43:54.16\00:43:57.00
the answer, of course,
could only be the cross,
00:43:57.03\00:44:01.50
just as all the
animal sacrifices
00:44:01.54\00:44:05.11
pointed to Christ's death,
00:44:05.14\00:44:07.28
all of this substitutionary
sacrificial system,
00:44:07.31\00:44:10.85
it pointed to Christ's death.
00:44:10.88\00:44:13.01
So obviously, the Lord now
looking ahead to the cross,
00:44:13.05\00:44:18.59
claimed the body of Moses
00:44:18.62\00:44:21.99
to be resurrected.
00:44:22.02\00:44:25.43
You know, my, my
favorite thought on this.
00:44:25.46\00:44:31.40
Moses followed the Lord.
00:44:31.43\00:44:35.47
Oh, the last 40 years
of his life were glorious.
00:44:35.50\00:44:39.07
What a man of God he
was, a friend of God.
00:44:39.11\00:44:44.01
His sin had consequences.
00:44:44.05\00:44:46.31
It kept him from crossing over
00:44:46.35\00:44:49.12
into the Promised Land on earth.
00:44:49.15\00:44:52.75
But God doesn't look at
one sin that we did and say,
00:44:52.79\00:44:57.59
oops, I'm looking for a reason
00:44:57.63\00:44:59.63
to take you out
of the Book of Life.
00:44:59.66\00:45:01.40
No, no, no.
00:45:01.43\00:45:03.87
God looks at the
record of our life.
00:45:03.90\00:45:07.17
And He knew Moses was His man.
00:45:07.20\00:45:10.34
And so Moses'
sin did not keep him
00:45:10.37\00:45:15.24
out of the
Promised Land of heaven.
00:45:15.28\00:45:19.15
His life record followed him.
00:45:19.18\00:45:22.62
Amen. All right.
00:45:22.65\00:45:24.35
Well, you've set me up perfectly
00:45:24.39\00:45:25.89
for Thursday's lesson.
00:45:25.92\00:45:27.99
In case you're
wondering, my name is Ryan Day.
00:45:28.02\00:45:30.36
And I have
Thursday's lesson entitled,
00:45:30.39\00:45:32.16
The Resurrection of Us
All, which is exciting.
00:45:32.19\00:45:36.60
So if I get a
little excited here,
00:45:36.63\00:45:38.87
you'll just
have to deal with it.
00:45:38.90\00:45:41.54
Moses was the first
recorded resurrection
00:45:41.57\00:45:44.01
in Scripture as far as being
00:45:44.04\00:45:46.14
one of the first
people ever resurrected.
00:45:46.17\00:45:47.88
Obviously, we just read
that from Jude and pastor also,
00:45:47.91\00:45:52.41
Pastor James Rafferty
referenced the sermon,
00:45:52.45\00:45:55.08
or excuse me, not the
sermon, but the Transfiguration.
00:45:55.12\00:45:58.59
I'll get there one day
Transfiguration on the Mount.
00:45:58.62\00:46:01.46
But, you know, Thursday's lesson
00:46:01.49\00:46:03.73
actually brings
out the fact that,
00:46:03.76\00:46:05.66
you know, Moses was
able to be resurrected
00:46:05.69\00:46:08.06
because of Christ.
00:46:08.10\00:46:09.56
And really our ultimate example
00:46:09.60\00:46:11.70
in all
resurrections is Jesus Christ
00:46:11.73\00:46:13.84
being the Bible
makes it very clear
00:46:13.87\00:46:15.57
that He holds the keys to death.
00:46:15.60\00:46:17.57
And that's exactly the
point that Paul is making
00:46:17.61\00:46:20.18
in 1 Corinthians Chapter 15.
00:46:20.21\00:46:22.14
So let's go there.
00:46:22.18\00:46:23.51
Let's go to 1
Corinthians Chapter 15.
00:46:23.55\00:46:25.38
Now, most of the time,
when we go to 1 Corinthians 15,
00:46:25.41\00:46:28.02
we focus in on
verses 51 to about 54.
00:46:28.05\00:46:31.82
We are going
to, if we have time,
00:46:31.85\00:46:33.82
we are going to
read those texts.
00:46:33.86\00:46:35.19
But I'm actually going to focus
in on verses 12 through 22.
00:46:35.22\00:46:39.16
It's a lengthy
passage, but it's powerful
00:46:39.19\00:46:41.20
when you consider the fact
00:46:41.23\00:46:42.63
that we have the
promise all of us,
00:46:42.66\00:46:44.73
not just Moses, not just
certain people in Scripture,
00:46:44.77\00:46:47.50
not just the
prophets or those notable ones
00:46:47.54\00:46:49.70
mentioned in the
Bible, but all of us have
00:46:49.74\00:46:52.47
the beautiful
promise of resurrection
00:46:52.51\00:46:54.51
because of Jesus Christ.
00:46:54.54\00:46:56.48
So 1 Corinthians 15:12-22.
00:46:56.51\00:47:00.28
Notice what the Bible says.
00:47:00.32\00:47:01.75
It says, "Now if
Christ is preached
00:47:01.78\00:47:03.92
that He has been
raised from the dead,
00:47:03.95\00:47:06.62
how do some among you say that
00:47:06.65\00:47:08.76
there is no
resurrection of the dead?"
00:47:08.79\00:47:10.76
And he's writing this
letter to the Church of Corinth.
00:47:10.79\00:47:13.23
Obviously, there were
some believers at Corinth,
00:47:13.26\00:47:15.80
where Paul had to, he
had to confront the issue.
00:47:15.83\00:47:18.07
He had to correct
them, because obviously,
00:47:18.10\00:47:19.60
there was a
belief floating around,
00:47:19.63\00:47:20.97
yeah, nobody's
gonna be resurrected.
00:47:21.00\00:47:23.37
He's like, "Look, if Christ
has been raised from the dead.
00:47:23.41\00:47:25.97
And how can any of you say
00:47:26.01\00:47:27.34
there is no
resurrection of the dead?"
00:47:27.38\00:47:28.94
Verse 13 and onward, it says,
00:47:28.98\00:47:30.31
"But if there is no
resurrection of the dead,
00:47:30.35\00:47:32.35
then Christ is not risen.
00:47:32.38\00:47:34.42
And if Christ is not risen,
00:47:34.45\00:47:35.95
then our preaching is empty
and your faith is also empty.
00:47:35.98\00:47:40.12
Yes, and we are found
false witnesses of God,
00:47:40.16\00:47:43.06
because we have testified of God
00:47:43.09\00:47:45.46
that He raised up Christ,
00:47:45.49\00:47:47.70
of whom He did not raise up,
00:47:47.73\00:47:49.40
if in fact the
dead do not rise."
00:47:49.43\00:47:52.17
I love this.
00:47:52.20\00:47:53.54
He says, "For if
the dead do not rise,
00:47:53.57\00:47:55.24
then Christ is not risen.
00:47:55.27\00:47:57.34
And if Christ is not
risen, your faith is futile,
00:47:57.37\00:48:00.21
you are still in your sins!
00:48:00.24\00:48:02.51
Then also those who have fallen
asleep in Christ have perished.
00:48:02.54\00:48:07.02
If in this life only
we have hope in Christ,
00:48:07.05\00:48:10.92
we are of all men
the most pitiable."
00:48:10.95\00:48:14.89
And then he goes on
to verse 20, verse 20-22,
00:48:14.92\00:48:17.63
he says, "But now
Christ is risen from the dead,
00:48:17.66\00:48:21.20
and has become the
firstfruits of those
00:48:21.23\00:48:23.67
who have fallen asleep.
00:48:23.70\00:48:25.53
For since by man came death,
00:48:25.57\00:48:29.40
by Man also came the
resurrection of the dead.
00:48:29.44\00:48:35.08
For as in Adam all die,
00:48:35.11\00:48:36.44
even so in Christ
all shall be made alive."
00:48:36.48\00:48:40.82
My friends, we
can look unto Jesus,
00:48:40.85\00:48:42.38
the author, the
finisher of our faith,
00:48:42.42\00:48:43.92
and know that
because He has risen,
00:48:43.95\00:48:46.65
He has overcome the world,
00:48:46.69\00:48:48.22
He has overcome sin,
00:48:48.26\00:48:49.82
in the promise
of His resurrection,
00:48:49.86\00:48:51.96
we also can be
resurrected and be made whole.
00:48:51.99\00:48:55.23
Of course, the
Bible makes it clear
00:48:55.26\00:48:56.73
that there are two different
types of resurrections.
00:48:56.77\00:48:58.83
And we need to make sure
we wake up in the right one.
00:48:58.87\00:49:02.97
John 5:28-29, Jesus
says these words, He says,"
00:49:03.00\00:49:07.11
Do not marvel at this,
00:49:07.14\00:49:08.51
for the hour is coming in
00:49:08.54\00:49:09.88
which all that are in the graves
00:49:09.91\00:49:11.25
will hear His
voice and come forth,
00:49:11.28\00:49:14.18
those who have done good,
00:49:14.22\00:49:15.55
unto the resurrection of life,
and those who have done evil,
00:49:15.58\00:49:18.39
unto the
resurrection of condemnation."
00:49:18.42\00:49:21.22
My friend, you're
going to find yourself
00:49:21.26\00:49:22.59
in one or two resurrections,
00:49:22.62\00:49:25.16
there's no middle
ground in the story.
00:49:25.19\00:49:28.30
I want to make sure
00:49:28.33\00:49:29.66
I'm waking up in
the right resurrection.
00:49:29.70\00:49:31.03
If I perish
before Jesus returns,
00:49:31.07\00:49:33.17
I want to make
sure that I'm waking up
00:49:33.20\00:49:35.34
in that first resurrection.
00:49:35.37\00:49:36.71
In fact, we may, Jesus goes
on to make it even more clear
00:49:36.74\00:49:39.81
through the
revelation given to John,
00:49:39.84\00:49:41.58
and we see that Revelation 20:6
00:49:41.61\00:49:44.31
and also I'm going to
go back and read verse 5,
00:49:44.35\00:49:46.31
after we read verse 6,
00:49:46.35\00:49:47.68
because verse 6 of
Revelation 20 says this,
00:49:47.72\00:49:49.82
"Blessed and holy
is he who has part
00:49:49.85\00:49:51.62
in the first resurrection.
00:49:51.65\00:49:53.29
Over such the
second death has no power,
00:49:53.32\00:49:56.06
but they shall be
priests of God and of Christ,
00:49:56.09\00:49:58.69
and shall reign with
Him a thousand years."
00:49:58.73\00:50:01.46
So there's a, there's that group
00:50:01.50\00:50:02.83
that is resurrected
in the first resurrection
00:50:02.86\00:50:05.07
at the Second Coming of Jesus.
00:50:05.10\00:50:06.77
Because
remember, the Bible teaches
00:50:06.80\00:50:08.27
that if people die
00:50:08.30\00:50:09.64
before the
Second Coming of Jesus,
00:50:09.67\00:50:11.27
they're not going
immediately to heaven.
00:50:11.31\00:50:12.64
The Bible makes it clear
00:50:12.67\00:50:14.01
that they will
remain in the grave asleep
00:50:14.04\00:50:16.58
until Jesus Christ
comes at a Second Coming,
00:50:16.61\00:50:19.11
which, of course, brings about
00:50:19.15\00:50:20.72
and
necessitates the resurrection
00:50:20.75\00:50:22.72
at the Second Coming of Christ.
00:50:22.75\00:50:24.22
That's the first resurrection
over such the second death.
00:50:24.25\00:50:27.26
You see, all of
us at some point,
00:50:27.29\00:50:29.09
in some way
experienced the first death
00:50:29.12\00:50:31.53
in this lifetime.
00:50:31.56\00:50:32.89
What we want to make sure
00:50:32.93\00:50:34.26
we have no part of
is that second death,
00:50:34.30\00:50:35.63
and those who are resurrected
in the second resurrection
00:50:35.66\00:50:38.80
at the end of
that thousand years.
00:50:38.83\00:50:40.34
And, of course,
that's what Revelation 20:5
00:50:40.37\00:50:43.54
is referencing when it says,
00:50:43.57\00:50:44.91
"But the rest of the
dead did not live again
00:50:44.94\00:50:46.74
until the thousand
years were finished."
00:50:46.78\00:50:48.98
We're talking
about a group of people
00:50:49.01\00:50:50.41
who rejected Jesus as Savior.
00:50:50.45\00:50:52.58
They rejected the
truth of God's Word.
00:50:52.61\00:50:54.68
They lived carnally
00:50:54.72\00:50:56.38
according to their own
heart and their own desires.
00:50:56.42\00:50:58.99
And, of course, they
never fully surrendered
00:50:59.02\00:51:00.69
to the leading, guiding power
00:51:00.72\00:51:02.06
of the Holy
Spirit in their life,
00:51:02.09\00:51:03.56
which is why not only do
00:51:03.59\00:51:04.93
they experience the first death,
00:51:04.96\00:51:06.29
not only even if those wicked
00:51:06.33\00:51:07.93
who are alive at the
Second Coming of Jesus,
00:51:07.96\00:51:09.80
we see there in 2
Thessalonians Chapter 2,
00:51:09.83\00:51:12.37
that the wicked will be consumed
00:51:12.40\00:51:14.24
by the brightness
of Christ's coming,
00:51:14.27\00:51:15.90
but then all the wicked
will be resurrected at the end
00:51:15.94\00:51:18.91
of that thousand
year millennial period.
00:51:18.94\00:51:20.61
And they will experience
00:51:20.64\00:51:21.98
what the Bible
calls the second death.
00:51:22.01\00:51:23.91
My friends, you
want to make sure
00:51:23.95\00:51:25.28
you're in the
right resurrection.
00:51:25.31\00:51:27.38
I want to make sure I'm
in the right resurrection.
00:51:27.42\00:51:29.55
This is what
Paul was counseling.
00:51:29.58\00:51:31.85
Also, the Church
of Thessalonica about,
00:51:31.89\00:51:34.86
not only did he talk
about this to Corinth,
00:51:34.89\00:51:36.56
but he also talked to
the Church of Thessalonica
00:51:36.59\00:51:39.63
about this very same subject,
00:51:39.66\00:51:41.00
because many of the
Christians were concerned,
00:51:41.03\00:51:42.60
they were saying, "Look,
00:51:42.63\00:51:43.97
you talk about
Christ coming back,
00:51:44.00\00:51:45.33
you talk about
Christ coming and gathering
00:51:45.37\00:51:46.87
His people who are alive,
00:51:46.90\00:51:48.27
and we'll meet Him in the air.
00:51:48.30\00:51:49.64
But what about
all of those believers
00:51:49.67\00:51:51.54
who have died and
been buried in the grave?
00:51:51.57\00:51:53.14
What about them?
00:51:53.17\00:51:54.51
Is God just
gonna let them perish
00:51:54.54\00:51:55.88
and be left behind,
00:51:55.91\00:51:57.25
and they never have any hope?"
00:51:57.28\00:51:58.61
And so Paul writes in 1
Thessalonians Chapter 4,
00:51:58.65\00:52:01.18
beginning with verse 13.
00:52:01.22\00:52:02.68
Notice what he says, he says,
00:52:02.72\00:52:04.05
"But I do not want
you to be ignorant,
00:52:04.09\00:52:06.25
brethren, concerning
those who have fallen asleep,"
00:52:06.29\00:52:09.59
referring to death, he says,
00:52:09.62\00:52:11.13
"lest you sorrow as
others who have no hope."
00:52:11.16\00:52:15.00
Who in the world is going
to have no hope, my friends?
00:52:15.03\00:52:17.80
It's those people who
have not put their trust
00:52:17.83\00:52:20.64
and who have not been sanctified
00:52:20.67\00:52:22.50
by the Gospel of Jesus Christ,
00:52:22.54\00:52:23.94
who have not put
their trust in Jesus Christ
00:52:23.97\00:52:26.37
as Lord and Savior.
00:52:26.41\00:52:27.74
It's those
people who have no hope
00:52:27.78\00:52:29.51
if they had went to the grave,
00:52:29.54\00:52:30.91
but he's saying,
look, you know what?
00:52:30.95\00:52:32.48
I want to give you some hope.
00:52:32.51\00:52:33.85
So verse 14, he
says, for if we believers,
00:52:33.88\00:52:36.69
notice, "For if we believe
that Jesus died and rose again,
00:52:36.72\00:52:40.39
even so God will bring with
Him those who sleep in Jesus."
00:52:40.42\00:52:43.99
Now he's not talking about,
00:52:44.03\00:52:45.36
you know, dead people,
00:52:45.39\00:52:46.73
that their spirits and
souls are in heaven coming back
00:52:46.76\00:52:48.40
as this has been
erroneously manipulated
00:52:48.43\00:52:51.73
and twisted to believe that
00:52:51.77\00:52:53.10
people are
coming back with Jesus
00:52:53.13\00:52:54.54
at His Second Coming.
00:52:54.57\00:52:55.90
There's only angels coming back
00:52:55.94\00:52:57.27
with Jesus at His Second Coming.
00:52:57.31\00:52:58.64
But, my friends,
what he's talking about
00:52:58.67\00:53:00.01
is those people
who are in the graves,
00:53:00.04\00:53:01.58
they're going to be resurrected.
00:53:01.61\00:53:03.01
And God is going
to bring those people
00:53:03.04\00:53:05.58
with everyone else
back to heaven with Him.
00:53:05.61\00:53:08.42
Notice verse 15,
00:53:08.45\00:53:09.78
"For this we say to you
by the word of the Lord,
00:53:09.82\00:53:11.85
that we who are alive and remain
00:53:11.89\00:53:13.49
until the coming of
the Lord will by no means,
00:53:13.52\00:53:15.99
notice, precede
those who are asleep."
00:53:16.02\00:53:18.96
No one gets to go
to heaven before us.
00:53:18.99\00:53:21.23
We don't get to go
to heaven before them.
00:53:21.26\00:53:22.60
Why?
00:53:22.63\00:53:23.97
Keep reading the text,
00:53:24.00\00:53:25.33
1 Thessalonians 4:16 and onward,
00:53:25.37\00:53:27.17
it says, "For the Lord Himself
00:53:27.20\00:53:28.54
will descend from
heaven with a shout,
00:53:28.57\00:53:30.51
with the voice of the archangel,
00:53:30.54\00:53:32.04
with the trumpet of God.
00:53:32.07\00:53:33.44
And the dead in
Christ will rise first.
00:53:33.48\00:53:36.61
Then we who are alive and remain
00:53:36.64\00:53:39.35
shall be caught
up together with them
00:53:39.38\00:53:41.85
in the clouds to
meet the Lord in the air.
00:53:41.88\00:53:44.05
And thus shall we
always be with the Lord."
00:53:44.09\00:53:47.16
And you know what?
Many times we stop there.
00:53:47.19\00:53:49.32
I'm gonna read the last verse,
00:53:49.36\00:53:50.73
because Paul
says, you know what?
00:53:50.76\00:53:52.33
Everything that I just said
00:53:52.36\00:53:54.10
about those who have
died and went to sleep,
00:53:54.13\00:53:56.00
those who are
going to be resurrected,
00:53:56.03\00:53:57.50
and how everyone's going to be,
00:53:57.53\00:53:58.90
you know, all the righteous
are going to go together
00:53:58.93\00:54:01.04
to heaven with
Christ all together.
00:54:01.07\00:54:03.14
My mom died a
couple of years ago.
00:54:03.17\00:54:04.87
Mama Day doesn't get to
step on the heaven shore
00:54:04.91\00:54:07.14
before I do.
00:54:07.18\00:54:08.51
I don't need to
step on heaven shore
00:54:08.54\00:54:09.91
before she does.
00:54:09.94\00:54:11.28
We're all going to be
caught up together with Jesus.
00:54:11.31\00:54:13.42
And he says there in
verse 18, "Therefore,
00:54:13.45\00:54:15.45
comfort one
another with these words."
00:54:15.48\00:54:19.39
That's right. Hallelujah.
00:54:19.42\00:54:20.76
Amen.
00:54:20.79\00:54:22.12
And then so shall we
always be with the Lord.
00:54:22.16\00:54:24.26
You know, every time
I get on this subject,
00:54:24.29\00:54:26.73
I can hear those words
of one of my favorite hymns.
00:54:26.76\00:54:31.97
Could we but stand
00:54:32.00\00:54:35.04
Where Moses stood
00:54:35.07\00:54:38.27
And view the landscape o'er
00:54:38.31\00:54:42.58
Not all this world's
00:54:42.61\00:54:45.11
pretended good
00:54:45.15\00:54:48.22
Could ever charm us more
00:54:48.25\00:54:53.09
We're traveling
to Immanuel's land
00:54:53.12\00:54:58.49
We soon shall
hear the trumpet sound
00:54:58.53\00:55:03.37
And soon
00:55:03.40\00:55:05.07
we shall with Jesus reign
00:55:05.10\00:55:10.71
And never, never part again
00:55:10.74\00:55:15.11
I love that. And they say what!
00:55:15.14\00:55:17.15
Never part again?
00:55:17.18\00:55:18.75
And then we say,
no, never part again
00:55:18.78\00:55:22.58
They would say what!
00:55:22.62\00:55:23.95
Never part again?
00:55:23.99\00:55:25.62
I say no, never part again
00:55:25.65\00:55:28.89
And soon we
shall with Jesus reign
00:55:28.92\00:55:34.33
And never, never part again
00:55:34.36\00:55:37.60
Amen. Amen.
00:55:37.63\00:55:40.30
Beautiful, I love that song.
00:55:40.34\00:55:41.67
Praise the
Lord. I'm so grateful.
00:55:41.70\00:55:43.37
What an incredible lesson
for all the way at the end.
00:55:43.41\00:55:46.64
So I want to give each one
of my brothers and sisters,
00:55:46.68\00:55:49.24
saints of God,
00:55:49.28\00:55:51.28
a moment to
share a final thought?
00:55:51.31\00:55:52.81
You know, Moses, one
sin may have kept him
00:55:52.85\00:55:56.25
out of the
earthly Promised Land.
00:55:56.28\00:55:59.72
But Jesus' one
sacrifice opened the door
00:55:59.75\00:56:03.76
for the heavenly Promised Land.
00:56:03.79\00:56:06.13
Don't be
discouraged by your sin,
00:56:06.16\00:56:08.26
be encouraged by the
righteousness of Christ.
00:56:08.30\00:56:12.03
You know, Moses reminds us
00:56:12.07\00:56:14.27
as the Samson and
thief on the cross
00:56:14.30\00:56:16.64
that men and women may die
00:56:16.67\00:56:19.31
as a consequence of
their sin on this earth,
00:56:19.34\00:56:22.38
but that doesn't mean
that they're eternally lost.
00:56:22.41\00:56:25.01
Absolutely not.
00:56:25.05\00:56:26.92
I just want to say,
00:56:26.95\00:56:28.52
I hope you've
enjoyed this quarter
00:56:28.55\00:56:30.22
as much as we have.
00:56:30.25\00:56:31.75
It is such a blessing and
looking forward to that day
00:56:31.79\00:56:36.19
when are we see our
Savior returning in the clouds.
00:56:36.22\00:56:39.96
Amen.
00:56:40.00\00:56:41.33
Beautiful promise
in 1 Corinthians 15.
00:56:41.36\00:56:43.77
It says, "So when
this corruptible..."
00:56:43.80\00:56:45.13
This is verse 54.
00:56:45.17\00:56:46.50
When this corruptible
has put on incorruption,
00:56:46.53\00:56:49.70
this mortal has
put on immortality,
00:56:49.74\00:56:51.31
then shall be brought to
pass the saying that is written:
00:56:51.34\00:56:54.04
'Death is
swallowed up in victory.'
00:56:54.08\00:56:57.01
O Death, where is your sting?
00:56:57.05\00:56:58.78
O Grave, where
is your victory?'"
00:56:58.81\00:57:00.95
Amen.
00:57:00.98\00:57:02.32
Thank you, Pastor
Ryan, my sister Shelley.
00:57:02.35\00:57:04.42
Thank you, Pastor
James and Pastor John,
00:57:04.45\00:57:06.15
for your study of the Word.
00:57:06.19\00:57:07.62
It's been an
amazing quarter together,
00:57:07.66\00:57:09.82
and we're grateful
you joined us every week
00:57:09.86\00:57:12.49
as we opened up the Word
of God and sought treasures.
00:57:12.53\00:57:16.06
Ask God to teach us
00:57:16.10\00:57:17.57
to convict our
hearts and show us
00:57:17.60\00:57:19.83
where we're not in
harmony with the Word
00:57:19.87\00:57:21.97
and where He
wants to bring us back,
00:57:22.00\00:57:24.34
reconcile us back
00:57:24.37\00:57:26.04
into right
relationship with Him.
00:57:26.07\00:57:28.41
I want to remind you join us.
00:57:28.44\00:57:30.31
Next week, we start
a brand new quarter.
00:57:30.35\00:57:32.88
We study the Book of Hebrews.
00:57:32.91\00:57:35.25
