All right. 00:02:20.40\00:02:21.74 Wonderful. 00:02:21.77\00:02:23.10 So that's the outline of our lesson titles. 00:02:23.14\00:02:24.47 My lesson is titled It Is Written. 00:02:24.51\00:02:27.38 We're starting here, in Deuteronomy, 00:02:27.41\00:02:29.68 in the New Testament Sabbath afternoon. 00:02:29.71\00:02:32.08 We got a lot of verses to read, 00:02:32.11\00:02:33.82 but the memory text for this lesson is, 00:02:33.85\00:02:37.19 "It is written, 00:02:37.22\00:02:38.55 man shall not live by bread alone, 00:02:38.59\00:02:40.16 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:02:40.19\00:02:42.69 And that's Matthew 4:4. 00:02:42.72\00:02:45.09 So we're going to take a little moment to pray 00:02:45.13\00:02:47.60 and then we're going to find out exactly 00:02:47.63\00:02:49.20 what this is all about 00:02:49.23\00:02:50.57 and what kind of connection this has in Matthew 4, 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.13 with the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:02:53.17\00:02:55.04 Shelley, would you like to pray for us? 00:02:55.07\00:02:56.40 I would love to pray. Thank you. 00:02:56.44\00:02:57.77 Father, we are so grateful to You, 00:02:57.81\00:03:00.31 for Jesus Christ, Your Holy Spirit, 00:03:00.34\00:03:02.28 and Your Word. 00:03:02.31\00:03:03.65 And, Lord, we know Your Word is life to us. 00:03:03.68\00:03:06.35 We know that we need to live by every word 00:03:06.38\00:03:11.52 that is implanted in our souls can save us. 00:03:11.55\00:03:16.29 And so, Father, we ask in the name of Jesus, 00:03:16.32\00:03:18.93 that You will send Your Holy Spirit 00:03:18.96\00:03:20.60 to be our teacher in Jesus' name. 00:03:20.63\00:03:22.86 Amen. Amen. 00:03:22.90\00:03:25.23 It's interesting, 00:03:25.27\00:03:26.60 when you read the Book of Deuteronomy, 00:03:26.63\00:03:27.97 that there is so much connection 00:03:28.00\00:03:29.70 with the New Testament. 00:03:29.74\00:03:31.07 I didn't realize how much connection there was 00:03:31.11\00:03:32.44 with the New Testament. 00:03:32.47\00:03:33.81 And that's why we have over and over again reminded you 00:03:33.84\00:03:36.91 that Deuteronomy was one 00:03:36.95\00:03:38.51 of the most quoted books by Jesus Christ. 00:03:38.55\00:03:41.02 And we're going to see that more than ever 00:03:41.05\00:03:42.52 here in Matthew Chapter 4. 00:03:42.55\00:03:44.62 He is tempted three times and he goes back 00:03:44.65\00:03:47.56 to the Book of Deuteronomy time and time again. 00:03:47.59\00:03:49.42 Now, this temptation took place in the wilderness. 00:03:49.46\00:03:53.43 Deuteronomy takes place in the wilderness 00:03:53.46\00:03:56.67 just before they enter into the Promised Land, 00:03:56.70\00:03:58.23 so there's a connection that has been made there. 00:03:58.27\00:04:00.44 And, of course, we understand 00:04:00.47\00:04:01.84 that God's people in the wilderness failed 00:04:01.87\00:04:04.07 to keep covenant with God, 00:04:04.11\00:04:05.44 they failed to keep their end of the bargain. 00:04:05.47\00:04:06.81 But guess who didn't fail in the wilderness 00:04:06.84\00:04:09.44 to keep their end of the bargain? 00:04:09.48\00:04:11.01 Jesus Christ, the second Adam, the one who stood in our place 00:04:11.05\00:04:14.72 and accomplished for us 00:04:14.75\00:04:16.08 what we couldn't accomplish for ourselves. 00:04:16.12\00:04:17.75 So we're going to see this over and over again as the lesson 00:04:17.79\00:04:19.75 quarterly brings out in the Sabbath School lesson 00:04:19.79\00:04:23.06 on the Sabbath day, it brings out over 00:04:23.09\00:04:25.49 and over again there we see the New Testament 00:04:25.53\00:04:28.26 quoting the Book of Deuteronomy, 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.00 some good stuff right there, 00:04:30.03\00:04:31.37 but we're gonna jump right into Sunday's lesson, 00:04:31.40\00:04:33.67 which is entitled It Is Written. 00:04:33.70\00:04:35.64 And we've quoted Matthew 4:4, Jesus Christ here, 00:04:35.67\00:04:39.67 just to set us up is in the wilderness. 00:04:39.71\00:04:42.51 He's been tempted of the devil on the lust of the flesh, 00:04:42.54\00:04:45.28 the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, 00:04:45.31\00:04:47.05 the three leading temptations. 00:04:47.08\00:04:49.55 1 John 2:15-17 tells us 00:04:49.58\00:04:52.35 that all the temptations that come to us 00:04:52.39\00:04:54.72 come out of these three leading temptations. 00:04:54.76\00:04:56.89 Well, Jesus Christ is called to be tempted in all points 00:04:56.93\00:05:00.93 such as we are, and these are the three points 00:05:00.96\00:05:04.10 because there's no other temptation that comes 00:05:04.13\00:05:05.93 to us that doesn't come to one of these three leading points, 00:05:05.97\00:05:08.97 so in order for Jesus to sympathize with us, 00:05:09.00\00:05:11.31 to empathize with us, 00:05:11.34\00:05:12.67 to be able to relate to us in our temptations, 00:05:12.71\00:05:14.74 He has to be tempted in these three points, 00:05:14.78\00:05:16.44 but not just in His day-to-day activity. 00:05:16.48\00:05:19.65 He's taken out into the wilderness, 00:05:19.68\00:05:21.95 He's taken out into a place where He fast for 40 days 00:05:21.98\00:05:24.99 so that He can feel the frailty, 00:05:25.02\00:05:26.72 the weakness of human nature such as we do. 00:05:26.76\00:05:30.66 In that context, He finally is left alone, 00:05:30.69\00:05:34.20 you know, He's in converse with God, 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.00 He's connected with God for those 40 days 00:05:36.03\00:05:37.70 and 40 nights, but then finally 00:05:37.73\00:05:39.33 the presence of God is pulled away, 00:05:39.37\00:05:41.87 and Jesus is left there, 00:05:41.90\00:05:43.64 like we are in our sin and temptation, 00:05:43.67\00:05:45.94 feeling like God has abandoned us, 00:05:45.97\00:05:47.78 feeling like where is God? 00:05:47.81\00:05:49.51 And in comes Satan. 00:05:49.54\00:05:51.31 And what is Jesus going to do in this kind of situation? 00:05:51.35\00:05:54.25 Well, again, He's been tempted like as we are, 00:05:54.28\00:05:56.75 He's going to trust like 00:05:56.79\00:05:58.15 we need to do on the Word of God. 00:05:58.19\00:06:01.69 That's where He needs to turn. 00:06:01.72\00:06:03.06 He needs to turn to the Word of God 00:06:03.09\00:06:04.43 and that's what He does over and over again. 00:06:04.46\00:06:06.53 I love this. 00:06:06.56\00:06:07.90 It's such a powerful interaction 00:06:07.93\00:06:10.20 that takes place here between Satan and Jesus. 00:06:10.23\00:06:13.00 Let's just read a bit of it in Matthew Chapter 4, 00:06:13.03\00:06:16.14 and let's just go down here in Matthew 4:3, 00:06:16.17\00:06:21.08 "When the tempter came to Him, that is to Jesus, 00:06:21.11\00:06:23.14 he said, 'If thou be the Son of God, 00:06:23.18\00:06:28.08 command the stones to be made bread.'" 00:06:28.12\00:06:31.19 If thou be the Son of God. 00:06:31.22\00:06:33.96 Devil ever said that to you, Shelley? 00:06:33.99\00:06:36.39 If you're a Christian, if you're a believer, 00:06:36.42\00:06:38.93 if you're a child of God, prove it by what you do, 00:06:38.96\00:06:43.63 prove it by your obedience, prove it by your actions. 00:06:43.67\00:06:48.07 The devil ever come and say that to you? 00:06:48.10\00:06:50.17 And this is exactly 00:06:50.21\00:06:51.64 what the devil is doing with Christ. 00:06:51.67\00:06:53.01 He's coming to Him and he's saying, listen, 00:06:53.04\00:06:54.54 if you're the Son of God, 00:06:54.58\00:06:56.51 not remembering those words 00:06:56.54\00:06:58.41 that were just spoken in Matthew 3, 00:06:58.45\00:07:00.25 just spoken at the baptism of Christ, 00:07:00.28\00:07:01.78 just spoken there at the Jordan, 00:07:01.82\00:07:03.15 remember those words? 00:07:03.18\00:07:04.52 Yeah. 00:07:04.55\00:07:05.89 This is my beloved Son in whom I'm well pleased. 00:07:05.92\00:07:07.26 Satan doesn't want us to remember 00:07:07.29\00:07:08.62 the promises of God, the words of God, 00:07:08.66\00:07:10.09 the blessings of God. 00:07:10.13\00:07:11.46 He doesn't want us to remember the gospel of Jesus Christ 00:07:11.49\00:07:13.80 that's spoken into us. 00:07:13.83\00:07:15.36 He wants to blank all of that out 00:07:15.40\00:07:16.93 and he wants to get us focused 00:07:16.97\00:07:18.43 on proving that we're God's children 00:07:18.47\00:07:20.30 because of what we do, 00:07:20.34\00:07:21.67 because of our actions, because of our obedience. 00:07:21.70\00:07:23.61 Do this and I'll believe that you're a child of God, 00:07:23.64\00:07:26.21 but Jesus resists as we need to do. 00:07:26.24\00:07:30.81 He resists this temptation 00:07:30.85\00:07:32.51 by going back to the Word of God. 00:07:32.55\00:07:34.88 He resists this temptation by placing His feet 00:07:34.92\00:07:37.52 firmly on the Word of God. 00:07:37.55\00:07:38.99 It is written, is what He says and I love this, it is written. 00:07:39.02\00:07:43.66 Verse 4, "But He answered and said, 00:07:43.69\00:07:45.16 'It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, 00:07:45.19\00:07:47.73 but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'" 00:07:47.76\00:07:52.13 Now, it's really interesting 00:07:52.17\00:07:53.50 when we look at this temptation, 00:07:53.54\00:07:54.87 you know, Jesus is tempted to turn stones into bread. 00:07:54.90\00:07:57.74 Jill, when was the last time you attempted to turn 00:07:57.77\00:07:59.24 stones into bread? 00:07:59.27\00:08:00.61 Never. 00:08:00.64\00:08:03.51 What kind of temptation is that for us? 00:08:03.55\00:08:05.61 How does Jesus relate to us in that kind of a temptation? 00:08:05.65\00:08:08.22 Right? 00:08:08.25\00:08:09.58 Well, we need to remember that Jesus was God man, 00:08:09.62\00:08:11.85 Jesus was divine-human. 00:08:11.89\00:08:14.09 He laid aside His divinity, but it was still there. 00:08:14.12\00:08:16.16 He could have turned stones into bread. 00:08:16.19\00:08:17.99 And let me tell you, it was hard for Him 00:08:18.03\00:08:20.80 not to respond to this, because you can imagine 00:08:20.83\00:08:23.47 He's got the divinity in Him, 00:08:23.50\00:08:24.83 He doesn't have to run down to the store to sin, right? 00:08:24.87\00:08:26.60 He doesn't have to go around the corner. 00:08:26.63\00:08:28.30 He doesn't have to do anything, but just speak, even blink, 00:08:28.34\00:08:31.44 perhaps, and those stones will be turned into bread. 00:08:31.47\00:08:34.54 Can you imagine that kind of temptation, 00:08:34.58\00:08:36.75 with that kind of power that He has within Him? 00:08:36.78\00:08:38.61 But if Jesus would have done that, 00:08:38.65\00:08:39.98 He would have relied upon Himself, 00:08:40.02\00:08:41.98 instead of relying upon God. 00:08:42.02\00:08:43.89 He would have relied upon His divinity 00:08:43.92\00:08:45.49 instead of relying upon God's divinity. 00:08:45.52\00:08:47.82 And that would have left us hopeless because the only thing 00:08:47.86\00:08:51.23 we can rely on is the power of God, 00:08:51.26\00:08:53.83 the divinity of God, the Word of God. 00:08:53.86\00:08:56.16 And so Jesus came to give us that example, He says, listen, 00:08:56.20\00:08:59.30 I'm not even going to parley with you Satan, 00:08:59.33\00:09:00.84 I'm not even going to think about it for a second, 00:09:00.87\00:09:03.17 it is written, man does not live by bread alone, 00:09:03.20\00:09:06.07 but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. 00:09:06.11\00:09:09.38 And then the devil comes at Him again. 00:09:09.41\00:09:11.11 You ever notice how the devil comes at us again, 00:09:11.15\00:09:12.91 you know, and again, right? 00:09:12.95\00:09:14.68 He comes out to Him again and again, 00:09:14.72\00:09:16.45 and that's why it's so important for us to recognize 00:09:16.48\00:09:19.25 that Jesus Christ is our example 00:09:19.29\00:09:20.96 because He's taking all the assaults of the devil, 00:09:20.99\00:09:23.22 one after another, 00:09:23.26\00:09:24.59 and He's telling us what we need to do 00:09:24.63\00:09:26.29 when we are attacked by the devil, 00:09:26.33\00:09:27.66 we need to go to the Word of God. 00:09:27.70\00:09:29.03 And so He says, here, the devil, of course, 00:09:29.06\00:09:31.13 says here in verse 5, 00:09:31.17\00:09:33.54 "And the devil takes him up into the holy city, 00:09:33.57\00:09:36.00 he sets him upon a pinnacle of the temple, 00:09:36.04\00:09:37.64 and he says to him, 'If thou be the Son of God..." 00:09:37.67\00:09:40.28 Here we go again, right? Okay. 00:09:40.31\00:09:42.44 I already have had this temptation 00:09:42.48\00:09:45.35 to disbelieve that I'm God's child. 00:09:45.38\00:09:47.32 I've already had this temptation because, 00:09:47.35\00:09:49.18 you know, I look at what I'm doing, 00:09:49.22\00:09:50.55 and I don't see it there but again, 00:09:50.59\00:09:53.12 the devil comes at us and he says, 00:09:53.15\00:09:54.76 if you're a child of God, if you're a Son of God, 00:09:54.79\00:09:56.93 if you're a daughter of God, he's coming at us 00:09:56.96\00:09:59.16 right there where it matters the most. 00:09:59.19\00:10:00.83 If you're the Son of God 00:10:00.86\00:10:02.20 cast yourself down, for it is written. 00:10:02.23\00:10:06.84 That's right. Yeah. 00:10:06.87\00:10:08.20 Satan will use the Word of God against us. 00:10:08.24\00:10:10.41 Satan will use the commands of God against us. 00:10:10.44\00:10:12.44 Satan will use what we ought to be doing in the Word of God 00:10:12.47\00:10:14.84 against us. 00:10:14.88\00:10:16.21 He'll try to crush us, oh, he'll just come at us 00:10:16.24\00:10:17.58 with the word, hey, you know, 00:10:17.61\00:10:18.95 it's written right here, you know, 00:10:18.98\00:10:20.42 isn't this what you should be doing? 00:10:20.45\00:10:21.78 Isn't this what should be identifying your life? 00:10:21.82\00:10:24.79 And when he does that, 00:10:24.82\00:10:27.22 because Satan always takes the Word of God out of context. 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.76 He always takes the Word of God to extreme. 00:10:29.79\00:10:32.33 When he does that, 00:10:32.36\00:10:33.70 we need to come back with him the way that Jesus did. 00:10:33.73\00:10:36.33 Because Satan's quoting scripture, 00:10:36.36\00:10:37.70 "He shall give His angels charge concerning thee, 00:10:37.73\00:10:39.37 in their hands they shall bear thee up, 00:10:39.40\00:10:40.77 lest thy dash, thy foot against a stone." 00:10:40.80\00:10:42.40 And by the way, that's Psalm 91. 00:10:42.44\00:10:44.51 Powerful Psalm that we need to claim for ourselves. 00:10:44.54\00:10:46.98 Jesus said unto him, verse 7, you ready for this? 00:10:47.01\00:10:49.31 "Jesus said unto him, 'It is written...'" 00:10:49.34\00:10:51.81 What's the next word? Again. 00:10:51.85\00:10:53.82 "It is written again." 00:10:53.85\00:10:55.35 You see, we've got to go to the Word of God. 00:10:55.38\00:10:57.59 Sometimes we just need 00:10:57.62\00:10:58.95 the weight of evidence of God's Word. 00:10:58.99\00:11:00.32 You know we've got to saturate our minds with the Word of God, 00:11:00.36\00:11:03.53 you know, we've got to get that gospel sandwich, 00:11:03.56\00:11:06.23 we need to be filled with God's Word, 00:11:06.26\00:11:09.33 so that we can resist the assaults of Satan 00:11:09.36\00:11:11.80 as he comes against us, promoting our weaknesses, 00:11:11.83\00:11:14.80 promoting our failures, pointing to the things 00:11:14.84\00:11:16.47 that we're not doing that are in harmony 00:11:16.50\00:11:18.77 with the Word of God. 00:11:18.81\00:11:20.14 And so Jesus says, in verse 7, "It is written again, 00:11:20.18\00:11:22.78 thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." 00:11:22.81\00:11:25.21 Again, you get that word, right? 00:11:25.25\00:11:27.85 Again, the devil comes in, he's relentless, isn't he? 00:11:27.88\00:11:30.82 He's relentless in his attacks. 00:11:30.85\00:11:32.19 "Again, the devil takes Him up 00:11:32.22\00:11:33.56 into an exceedingly high mountain, 00:11:33.59\00:11:34.92 he shows him all the kingdoms of the world, 00:11:34.96\00:11:36.49 the glory of them and he says to Him, 00:11:36.52\00:11:38.06 all these I will give you, 00:11:38.09\00:11:39.43 all these things I will give you 00:11:39.46\00:11:40.80 if you will fall down and worship me." 00:11:40.83\00:11:42.73 That's what he really wants. 00:11:42.76\00:11:44.10 He really wants worship. 00:11:44.13\00:11:45.73 Satan wants to put himself in the place of God. 00:11:45.77\00:11:48.30 He wants to be in the sides of the north. 00:11:48.34\00:11:50.64 He wants to be in the Mount of the Congregation. 00:11:50.67\00:11:52.51 He wants to receive the worship that belongs only to God 00:11:52.54\00:11:55.41 and get us that and so many subtle ways. 00:11:55.44\00:11:57.31 I mean, here he's quoting the Bible. 00:11:57.35\00:11:59.11 But Jesus says unto him, get the hint, Satan. 00:11:59.15\00:12:03.65 Why can he say this? 00:12:03.69\00:12:05.02 Why can Jesus say this, for it is written, 00:12:05.05\00:12:08.12 thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, 00:12:08.16\00:12:09.86 and Him only shall thou serve? 00:12:09.89\00:12:12.76 You know this is so powerful. 00:12:12.79\00:12:14.23 This is so powerful because Jesus doesn't let Satan define 00:12:14.26\00:12:18.57 who He is and neither should we. 00:12:18.60\00:12:22.20 We are who God says we are, 00:12:22.24\00:12:24.34 not who Satan tempts us to think we are. 00:12:24.37\00:12:26.68 The greatest temptations that come to us aren't those things, 00:12:26.71\00:12:28.98 you know, to lust after. 00:12:29.01\00:12:30.71 The great temptations that come to us are the temptations 00:12:30.75\00:12:34.32 to insecurity. 00:12:34.35\00:12:35.68 And when we're insecure about ourselves in our relationship 00:12:35.72\00:12:38.35 with God that's when temptations have 00:12:38.39\00:12:40.86 their way with us. 00:12:40.89\00:12:42.22 We need to get into that secure relationship with God. 00:12:42.26\00:12:44.99 He is our Father. We are His children. 00:12:45.03\00:12:47.13 He loves us. 00:12:47.16\00:12:48.50 He's forgiven us, He's justified us. 00:12:48.53\00:12:49.96 We are saved by His righteousness. 00:12:50.00\00:12:51.83 And when we have that assurance, 00:12:51.87\00:12:55.57 Ephesians 2:9-10 says, 00:12:55.60\00:12:57.71 we become his workmanship, His poiema, 00:12:57.74\00:12:59.97 we become his workmanship, 00:13:00.01\00:13:01.34 we're created of the good works, 00:13:01.38\00:13:02.71 and we just bathe in those good works. 00:13:02.74\00:13:05.45 We love those good works, because we have this assurance 00:13:05.48\00:13:07.92 that we're God's children, 00:13:07.95\00:13:09.28 we have this assurance that God is with us 00:13:09.32\00:13:10.92 that He's walking with us that He's talking with us. 00:13:10.95\00:13:13.52 So in summary, 00:13:13.56\00:13:14.89 remember you are not who the devil tempts you to be, 00:13:14.92\00:13:18.89 you are not who the devil tempts you to think you are, 00:13:18.93\00:13:22.36 you are not the summation of your greatest temptations. 00:13:22.40\00:13:26.50 You are who God says you are. 00:13:26.53\00:13:30.51 You are a prodigal returned to the fold. 00:13:30.54\00:13:33.91 You are a sheep brought back to the fold. 00:13:33.94\00:13:36.98 You are a publican justified. 00:13:37.01\00:13:39.88 You are a sinner forgiven 00:13:39.91\00:13:41.98 and ransomed by the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:13:42.02\00:13:44.35 Amen. Amen. 00:13:44.39\00:13:46.39 Praise the Lord. 00:13:46.42\00:13:48.12 I let you a little extra time there, Kenny. 00:13:48.16\00:13:49.96 Come on. I love it. 00:13:49.99\00:13:51.69 He got every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. 00:13:51.73\00:13:54.43 Thank you for emphasizing that. 00:13:54.46\00:13:56.23 And I have Monday's lesson. 00:13:56.26\00:13:58.43 And that's such a good foundation which to build upon. 00:13:58.47\00:14:00.94 This kind of a transition really looking at, 00:14:00.97\00:14:03.97 you know, this part, but we need, Lifting up Faces. 00:14:04.01\00:14:06.57 What could that possibly mean lifting up faces on Monday, 00:14:06.61\00:14:10.15 but in Deuteronomy 10, Moses, 00:14:10.18\00:14:11.75 I like the word you talked about again, right? 00:14:11.78\00:14:14.18 Moses, again, was recounting Israel's history and again, 00:14:14.22\00:14:17.95 use these accounts 00:14:17.99\00:14:19.32 and admonished people in their faithfulness. 00:14:19.35\00:14:22.49 So we want to look in Deuteronomy 10:17-19. 00:14:22.52\00:14:27.36 Notice the Word of God, I love to say, 00:14:31.40\00:14:33.30 this is what the Word of God says. 00:14:33.34\00:14:34.80 This is what God says in His Word. 00:14:34.84\00:14:36.50 Seventeen, notice it says, 00:14:36.54\00:14:38.57 "For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, 00:14:38.61\00:14:42.74 a great God, a mighty and terrible, 00:14:42.78\00:14:46.38 which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward. 00:14:46.41\00:14:50.35 He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless 00:14:50.39\00:14:52.95 and the widow and loveth the stranger, 00:14:52.99\00:14:55.12 and giving him food and remnant, 00:14:55.16\00:14:57.53 and love ye, therefore, 00:14:57.56\00:14:59.39 the stranger for ye were strangers in the land 00:14:59.43\00:15:02.40 of Egypt." 00:15:02.43\00:15:03.77 So, again, we go back and we look at again 00:15:03.80\00:15:05.93 God said these are some of the reasons why we love God. 00:15:05.97\00:15:08.57 He's supplying all of our needs. 00:15:08.60\00:15:10.24 I know He's been supplying all of your needs 00:15:10.27\00:15:11.64 as He has mine throughout my life. 00:15:11.67\00:15:13.38 So really, why should I worry when times really get tough? 00:15:13.41\00:15:15.54 He's been there all the time. 00:15:15.58\00:15:16.91 He'd been there for years, I've never been forsaken, right. 00:15:16.95\00:15:18.88 He said, "I've never seen the righteous forsaken 00:15:18.91\00:15:20.85 nor the seed begging bread." 00:15:20.88\00:15:22.98 Praise God for that. 00:15:23.02\00:15:24.35 It's the central message for today, Lifting up Faces. 00:15:24.39\00:15:26.65 And so we look at that. 00:15:26.69\00:15:28.09 He says, which regardeth not, 00:15:28.12\00:15:29.46 there's a phrase in there that regardeth not in verse 17, 00:15:29.49\00:15:32.73 regardeth not persons. 00:15:32.76\00:15:34.63 So this is kind of interesting, 00:15:34.66\00:15:36.00 regardeth not or show no partiality, 00:15:36.03\00:15:38.30 I think that's what we're seeing in these verses. 00:15:38.33\00:15:39.67 There'll be several more we can share here 00:15:39.70\00:15:41.37 as we go along. 00:15:41.40\00:15:42.74 It's translated from the Hebrew figure of speech, 00:15:42.77\00:15:45.31 it means literally, that he does not lift up faces. 00:15:45.34\00:15:49.01 And what does that mean? 00:15:49.04\00:15:50.38 I know our lesson kind of brings it out too, 00:15:50.41\00:15:51.75 and you do a little more study on it. 00:15:51.78\00:15:53.11 It comes from a kind of like a legal background 00:15:53.15\00:15:56.28 setting for many years ago, 00:15:56.32\00:15:58.22 where you had a judge or you had a king, 00:15:58.25\00:16:01.32 you know, they'd pass sentence. 00:16:01.36\00:16:02.69 They'd bring somebody before them 00:16:02.72\00:16:04.06 and if they were a man of means, 00:16:04.09\00:16:06.70 you know, if they were somebody big in the community, 00:16:06.73\00:16:10.10 you know, somebody that may be carried 00:16:10.13\00:16:11.57 a little extra weight, he looked at their face, 00:16:11.60\00:16:14.54 or what they had or their position, 00:16:14.57\00:16:16.91 and therefore he would pass sentence. 00:16:16.94\00:16:20.14 You say, well, surely we haven't gone that far today? 00:16:20.18\00:16:22.41 Surely, we wouldn't do anything like that? 00:16:22.44\00:16:25.11 Well, maybe we went a little bit backward 00:16:25.15\00:16:27.08 rather than going forward here. 00:16:27.12\00:16:29.75 I'm glad that God doesn't judge us that way, 00:16:29.78\00:16:33.42 about how we look, or maybe our education 00:16:33.46\00:16:36.12 or our background where we were raised. 00:16:36.16\00:16:38.96 But you know, even in this country, 00:16:38.99\00:16:40.36 we find some things that went on in the 1800s 00:16:40.40\00:16:43.67 that you're thinking, they really did. 00:16:43.70\00:16:46.84 It bled over into the 1800s 'cause they did... 00:16:46.87\00:16:51.54 I wanna say this nicely. 00:16:51.57\00:16:52.91 Now, come on, somebody stay with me, 00:16:52.94\00:16:54.31 you know because they had ugly laws on the book. 00:16:54.34\00:16:59.95 Ugly laws? 00:16:59.98\00:17:01.32 Ugly laws, 00:17:01.35\00:17:02.68 and a lot of had to do with whether you were disabled, 00:17:02.72\00:17:06.22 or you were poor or you were a beggar, or no, 00:17:06.25\00:17:10.09 I don't wanna say but you go to Wikipedia, 00:17:10.13\00:17:11.86 you'll find that out .org, 00:17:11.89\00:17:13.23 you'll find out that these laws. 00:17:13.26\00:17:14.60 If your face was a little bit, you know, you'd be fined. 00:17:14.63\00:17:20.54 So you didn't want to get out during the daytime. 00:17:20.57\00:17:22.67 And listen, you think that's really interesting. 00:17:22.70\00:17:24.31 Listen, Chicago had it on the books, 00:17:24.34\00:17:27.84 legislative books, 00:17:27.88\00:17:29.21 and it was in operation until 1974. 00:17:29.24\00:17:32.21 Finally, they threw it out. Think about it. 00:17:32.25\00:17:35.25 To me ugly laws, first one was at 1867, 00:17:35.28\00:17:39.52 California, New York, Denver, and Oregon, 00:17:39.55\00:17:41.72 so on had these laws. 00:17:41.76\00:17:44.79 If your looks were bad, you could be fined. 00:17:44.83\00:17:48.16 You know, we were thinking during our time 00:17:48.20\00:17:50.20 you could see it. 00:17:50.23\00:17:51.57 I want to relate more back in the time of the judge 00:17:51.60\00:17:53.54 or kings way back then that again, 00:17:53.57\00:17:55.70 they were looking out for themselves and so on. 00:17:55.74\00:17:57.74 But why would these kinds of laws be on there, 00:17:57.77\00:18:00.21 you know, 1883, 1867, 1881, 00:18:00.24\00:18:03.88 and stay on for 90 years in Chicago? 00:18:03.91\00:18:07.02 The last time they repealed it 1974 so anyway, 00:18:07.05\00:18:12.25 I'm thankful we have a God that doesn't look on the, 00:18:12.29\00:18:14.79 you know, outside of man. 00:18:14.82\00:18:16.59 He looks on the inward that He looks at the heart 00:18:16.62\00:18:19.09 and looks in the mind and so I praise God for that. 00:18:19.13\00:18:22.03 Acts 10:34, we'll go on because we want to match up 00:18:22.06\00:18:25.27 with what we read in Deuteronomy 10:17 here. 00:18:25.30\00:18:28.74 Notice what Peter said here. 00:18:28.77\00:18:30.27 Acts 10:34, 00:18:30.31\00:18:31.84 "Then Peter opened his mouth and he said of a," what? 00:18:31.87\00:18:34.98 "Of a truth, I perceive that God 00:18:35.01\00:18:37.05 is no respecter of persons." 00:18:37.08\00:18:40.72 Praise God that we serve one who's no respecter of persons. 00:18:40.75\00:18:44.42 No one has an advantage over the other. 00:18:44.45\00:18:46.39 God loves everyone the same. 00:18:46.42\00:18:48.76 And I don't know that we can say that for ourselves. 00:18:48.79\00:18:52.39 We're partial, and maybe sometime 00:18:52.43\00:18:54.66 we should be in a right balance. 00:18:54.70\00:18:56.06 You're partial to your wife, 00:18:56.10\00:18:57.43 you're partial to your children, 00:18:57.47\00:18:58.80 and so on and so forth but God says 00:18:58.83\00:19:00.37 we're to love everyone. 00:19:00.40\00:19:02.14 We get to heaven, we're going to love everybody the same. 00:19:02.17\00:19:05.47 Man, that's kind of interesting thought, everyone the same, 00:19:05.51\00:19:07.78 no one's gonna be put above another. 00:19:07.81\00:19:10.05 And that's the way God looks at us. 00:19:10.08\00:19:11.41 I'm thankful for that. 00:19:11.45\00:19:12.78 Desire of Ages, page 639, you have a chance to look at, 00:19:12.81\00:19:15.05 I'm going to read it for you 00:19:15.08\00:19:16.42 but in case you gonna do some study on it. 00:19:16.45\00:19:18.05 It says angels of heaven, praise God for the angels 00:19:18.09\00:19:20.89 of heaven, that are passing throughout the length 00:19:20.92\00:19:23.09 and the breadth of the earth. 00:19:23.12\00:19:24.46 Right? 00:19:24.49\00:19:25.83 Those angels just coming and they're going 00:19:25.86\00:19:27.60 and usually a lot for me, 00:19:27.63\00:19:29.20 I know because I need extra help all the time. 00:19:29.23\00:19:31.00 So the angels are coming and going 00:19:31.03\00:19:32.63 and getting message from the Father and so on. 00:19:32.67\00:19:34.60 They're seeking to comfort those who are sorrowing. 00:19:34.64\00:19:37.21 So if you're sorrowing today and to protect the imperiled 00:19:37.24\00:19:40.78 and to win hearts of men to Christ. 00:19:40.81\00:19:43.21 Angels are busy people. 00:19:43.24\00:19:44.71 Praise God for our angels. Okay. 00:19:44.75\00:19:46.08 Not one of us is neglected or passed by. 00:19:46.11\00:19:48.58 I love that not one. 00:19:48.62\00:19:50.25 Remember, it's not God just looks on the face 00:19:50.29\00:19:52.49 or he looks at his face and said oh, they don't, 00:19:52.52\00:19:54.02 their education you can't, no you can't, 00:19:54.06\00:19:55.39 you don't know, you're disable you're blah-blah-blah. 00:19:55.42\00:19:58.06 No, God looks at us right here. 00:19:58.09\00:19:59.43 Not one is passed by, God is no respecter of persons. 00:19:59.46\00:20:03.53 He has an equal care for all souls that he has created. 00:20:03.57\00:20:08.74 I mean, really that challenges 00:20:08.77\00:20:10.34 my thinking because we're used to everything 00:20:10.37\00:20:12.47 is here little laws going your love, 00:20:12.51\00:20:13.84 you have a little partiality. 00:20:13.88\00:20:15.58 In Desire of Ages 638 says this, I like this, 00:20:15.61\00:20:18.01 well, kind of a one-liner. 00:20:18.05\00:20:19.45 "Not to any class is Christ love restricted. 00:20:19.48\00:20:24.52 Not to any class is it restricted. 00:20:24.55\00:20:27.06 When you and I may go down the street 00:20:27.09\00:20:28.42 and we restrict our love. 00:20:28.46\00:20:30.53 And what we might do we see somebody 00:20:30.56\00:20:31.99 we think maybe he's not. 00:20:32.03\00:20:33.70 Well, you know what I'm talking about here? Yeah. 00:20:33.73\00:20:35.76 He identifies himself with every child of humanity. 00:20:35.80\00:20:39.87 I'm thankful that he does that he hasn't forgot us 00:20:39.90\00:20:41.94 or the little poor Shelton Boy 00:20:41.97\00:20:43.84 who was born 812 West Warden Street. 00:20:43.87\00:20:45.81 I'm thankful that God didn't look on the faces 00:20:45.84\00:20:47.74 of the wallet, you know, He still dwelt 00:20:47.78\00:20:50.25 and still worked with us as He does everyone. 00:20:50.28\00:20:52.81 Romans 2:11, this comes in our lesson. 00:20:52.85\00:20:55.98 Romans 2:11. 00:20:56.02\00:20:57.39 Again, just reiterating once again, 00:20:57.42\00:20:59.89 for there is no respecter of persons with what? 00:20:59.92\00:21:03.02 With God. 00:21:03.06\00:21:04.39 Prophets and Kings, 369 says this, 00:21:04.43\00:21:07.03 "No distinction on account of nationality, 00:21:07.06\00:21:10.50 race, or caste is recognized by God. 00:21:10.53\00:21:14.04 He is the Maker of all mankind. 00:21:14.07\00:21:16.34 So somewhat going over some of the same things 00:21:16.37\00:21:18.71 but I think sometimes we need that 00:21:18.74\00:21:20.21 because in this world that we're living in right now, 00:21:20.24\00:21:22.54 there's a lot about race, 00:21:22.58\00:21:23.91 there's a lot about nationality. 00:21:23.95\00:21:25.28 There's a lot about this group and that group and what so. 00:21:25.31\00:21:27.62 God is no respecter of person, He loves everybody the same 00:21:27.65\00:21:31.55 and He wants us to love man too. 00:21:31.59\00:21:33.52 I give you a example here quick, 00:21:33.56\00:21:34.89 couple of examples of it that God loves 00:21:34.92\00:21:36.62 and gives everyone equal opportunity. 00:21:36.66\00:21:39.16 In Exodus 12:31-32, 00:21:39.19\00:21:42.00 we're not going to read that there 00:21:42.03\00:21:43.37 but you'll know this is dealing with pharaoh. 00:21:43.40\00:21:45.07 Right? 00:21:45.10\00:21:46.43 Pharaoh finally said, after you know, 00:21:46.47\00:21:47.80 all this came to him, let my people go, 00:21:47.84\00:21:49.70 let my people go, finally he said what? 00:21:49.74\00:21:51.94 Go serve your Lord, right, and bless me also. 00:21:51.97\00:21:56.88 He was feeling that tugging of the Holy Spirit even on him, 00:21:56.91\00:21:59.51 he said, and bless me also. 00:21:59.55\00:22:02.28 Go serve your God. Joshua 2:11. 00:22:02.32\00:22:04.45 In Jericho, the heathen woman said, 00:22:04.49\00:22:06.76 "The Lord your God, He is God in heaven above 00:22:06.79\00:22:10.76 and on earth beneath." 00:22:10.79\00:22:14.33 God was working on her also. 00:22:14.36\00:22:16.30 Rahab you remember that in Hebrews 11:31, 00:22:16.33\00:22:20.07 by faith Rahab perished not with them that believe not. 00:22:20.10\00:22:24.01 God's giving everybody a fair shake, 00:22:24.04\00:22:25.67 you're getting a fair shake. 00:22:25.71\00:22:27.04 God's got his eye on you. 00:22:27.08\00:22:28.41 He got his eye on the sparrow, right? 00:22:28.44\00:22:29.78 He knows everything about you. 00:22:29.81\00:22:31.15 He's not gonna take his eye off of you because He wants 00:22:31.18\00:22:32.61 to help you and He wants to help me. 00:22:32.65\00:22:34.25 Prophets and Kings, 370 says this, 00:22:34.28\00:22:36.52 "All men are of one family." 00:22:36.55\00:22:38.19 I like this. 00:22:38.22\00:22:39.55 If we really believe that, I think we might treat 00:22:39.59\00:22:40.92 each other just a little bit differently than we do. 00:22:40.96\00:22:43.56 We're family by creation and all through one, 00:22:43.59\00:22:47.36 through redemption, 00:22:47.40\00:22:49.43 we're all part of the family of God, 00:22:49.46\00:22:51.77 We're all kin. 00:22:51.80\00:22:53.13 I like that. We're all related. 00:22:53.17\00:22:54.90 Isn't that wonderful? 00:22:54.94\00:22:56.54 Could we call it a blood relation here too 00:22:56.57\00:22:58.81 from very beginning? 00:22:58.84\00:23:00.18 Yes. 00:23:00.21\00:23:01.54 And if you do you always say, well, my aunt, my uncle, 00:23:01.58\00:23:03.01 my mom, my dad, my brother 00:23:03.04\00:23:05.15 we're all part of the family of God 00:23:05.18\00:23:06.51 so when you look upon your brother and sister 00:23:06.55\00:23:07.88 part of the family of God. 00:23:07.92\00:23:10.25 Galatians 2:6, Paul speaking, 00:23:10.29\00:23:11.95 but of these who seemeth to be somewhat, 00:23:11.99\00:23:15.96 whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me. 00:23:15.99\00:23:19.09 Some people seem like they're some because they think 00:23:19.13\00:23:21.23 they're walking in tall cotton. 00:23:21.26\00:23:22.86 Have you seen somebody like that? 00:23:22.90\00:23:24.23 They're dressed fit to kill they talk about, 00:23:24.27\00:23:26.27 and they think they're something. 00:23:26.30\00:23:27.64 Paul looks down, he says right. 00:23:27.67\00:23:29.27 They seem to think they're somewhat. 00:23:29.30\00:23:31.47 But he said to me, it doesn't matter to me. 00:23:31.51\00:23:35.11 And that said doesn't matter to God. 00:23:35.14\00:23:36.95 God accepteth no man's persons. 00:23:36.98\00:23:39.71 Well, praise God for that. 00:23:39.75\00:23:41.62 That gives us all hope, gives us all encouragement, 00:23:41.65\00:23:43.59 regardless of what side of track that you came on, 00:23:43.62\00:23:45.49 or wherever you're going, or wherever you're headed, 00:23:45.52\00:23:47.46 God's headed there with you. 00:23:47.49\00:23:48.82 He did not take his eyes off you. 00:23:48.86\00:23:50.19 He loves you and I know He's coming back 00:23:50.23\00:23:51.69 with invitation, be ready. 00:23:51.73\00:23:53.66 Amen. 00:25:36.40\00:25:39.50 In other words, were they saved by grace plus 00:25:39.53\00:25:42.24 the outward work or outward act of circumcision 00:25:42.27\00:25:45.51 or were they just saved by grace through faith? 00:25:45.54\00:25:49.31 Paul addresses this in the Book of Galatians. 00:25:49.34\00:25:52.21 It's also addressed in Acts Chapter 15 00:25:52.25\00:25:54.78 at the Jerusalem Council. 00:25:54.82\00:25:56.72 You know, Galatians offers a uniquely Christian reading 00:25:56.75\00:26:00.59 of the Old Testament. 00:26:00.62\00:26:02.72 It explains the differences in the traditional 00:26:02.76\00:26:04.93 Jewish understanding of the Old Testament 00:26:04.96\00:26:07.66 and the church's new understanding 00:26:07.70\00:26:10.53 of the Old Testament. 00:26:10.57\00:26:12.47 Paul argues that the promises given to the Jews 00:26:12.50\00:26:15.40 were now extended to the entire world. 00:26:15.44\00:26:18.64 And that salvation for the Gentiles 00:26:18.67\00:26:20.91 is also found in the Old Testament too. 00:26:20.94\00:26:22.64 You know, the Jews fell, it was very exclusive 00:26:22.68\00:26:25.58 and Paul opens up their understanding 00:26:25.61\00:26:28.18 and expands our understanding. 00:26:28.22\00:26:29.95 So we're looking at Galatians 3:1-14 00:26:29.98\00:26:34.49 that's what the lesson has this read. 00:26:34.52\00:26:35.86 We're not going to read them all, 00:26:35.89\00:26:37.23 but we're going to read portions of that. 00:26:37.26\00:26:39.19 And, Pastor Ryan, I have six takeaways from this passage. 00:26:39.23\00:26:42.36 Galatians 3:1-14. 00:26:42.40\00:26:45.07 Let's pick it up in verse 1. 00:26:45.10\00:26:46.60 Oh, foolish, Galatians. 00:26:46.63\00:26:48.44 Now, when you read that in English, that's pretty strong. 00:26:48.47\00:26:51.21 My mom used to say, don't ever call someone stupid, right? 00:26:51.24\00:26:54.98 Don't ever call someone foolish. 00:26:55.01\00:26:57.25 And yet he says, oh, foolish, Galatians. 00:26:57.28\00:27:01.65 The word foolish in Greek is even stronger than in English. 00:27:01.68\00:27:04.59 It means mindless and stupid. 00:27:04.62\00:27:08.22 "Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth? 00:27:08.26\00:27:11.96 This is the gospel 00:27:11.99\00:27:13.66 before whose eyes Jesus Christ 00:27:13.70\00:27:16.40 was clearly portrayed among you, as crucified." 00:27:16.43\00:27:19.53 Jump down to verse 3. 00:27:19.57\00:27:21.80 "Are you so foolish? 00:27:21.84\00:27:24.27 Having begun in the spirit are you now being made 00:27:24.31\00:27:27.74 perfect by the flesh?" 00:27:27.78\00:27:29.28 And, of course, the flesh he's referencing that circumcision. 00:27:29.31\00:27:32.41 If you were saved by grace, do you need outward works 00:27:32.45\00:27:37.02 to add to that salvation? 00:27:37.05\00:27:40.32 Takeaway number one, 00:27:40.36\00:27:41.69 salvation is by grace through faith, 00:27:41.72\00:27:44.36 works cannot add to our salvation. 00:27:44.39\00:27:48.36 Works are clearly evidence of our salvation, 00:27:48.40\00:27:52.73 but they cannot add to our salvation. 00:27:52.77\00:27:56.27 Takeaway number two, 00:27:56.30\00:27:57.64 it's easy to be walking in works yet think you 00:27:57.67\00:28:01.78 walking in grace. 00:28:01.81\00:28:03.81 Have you ever discovered that? 00:28:03.85\00:28:05.38 It's easy to think I'm saved by grace through faith 00:28:05.41\00:28:08.55 and I truly believe that, and I'm walking in that, 00:28:08.58\00:28:12.19 and you're not even be walking in at all. 00:28:12.22\00:28:15.02 Jeremiah 17:9, what's the Word of God say? 00:28:15.06\00:28:17.73 The heart is deceitful above all things, 00:28:17.76\00:28:19.69 and desperately wicked, who can know it?" 00:28:19.73\00:28:22.46 We can be spiritually deceived, 00:28:22.50\00:28:25.53 thinking that we're walking in grace 00:28:25.57\00:28:28.00 when we're actually walking in works after all. 00:28:28.04\00:28:30.77 You know, Greg and I talk about this 00:28:30.81\00:28:32.37 a lot and that is the term balance. 00:28:32.41\00:28:36.48 What is balance? 00:28:36.51\00:28:37.91 What is balance spiritually? 00:28:37.95\00:28:39.71 And we talk about this a lot. 00:28:39.75\00:28:41.65 I could say, we could say we're balanced. 00:28:41.68\00:28:44.19 We only say that because there are some people 00:28:44.22\00:28:46.65 who lean more to the right than us 00:28:46.69\00:28:48.89 and some people who lean more to the left than us, 00:28:48.92\00:28:51.56 but is that balance? 00:28:51.59\00:28:52.99 And the person who leans maybe more to the right says 00:28:53.03\00:28:55.63 I'm balanced because there's people 00:28:55.66\00:28:57.17 who lean more to the left from them, 00:28:57.20\00:28:59.33 and people who still lean more to the right from them. 00:28:59.37\00:29:02.47 So it's easy for us to be walking in grace 00:29:02.50\00:29:06.34 and think we're walking in grace, 00:29:06.37\00:29:08.78 and yet we're spiritually deceived. 00:29:08.81\00:29:10.78 We don't even know our own hearts. 00:29:10.81\00:29:12.68 Let's jump down to verse 5. 00:29:12.71\00:29:14.05 Galatians 3:5, 00:29:14.08\00:29:15.52 "Therefore, He who supplies the spirit to you, 00:29:15.55\00:29:18.49 and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works 00:29:18.52\00:29:21.66 of the law, or by the hearing of faith?" 00:29:21.69\00:29:25.03 Just as Abraham believed God, 00:29:25.06\00:29:28.06 and it was accounted to him for righteousness, 00:29:28.10\00:29:32.33 to pass to one's account, 00:29:32.37\00:29:33.80 it was imputed to him for righteousness. 00:29:33.84\00:29:38.31 Now was Abraham justified by faith or by works? 00:29:38.34\00:29:41.34 Clearly, he was justified by faith 00:29:41.38\00:29:44.81 even prior to the circumcision 00:29:44.85\00:29:46.92 that took place there in Genesis Chapter 17. 00:29:46.95\00:29:51.39 Paul brings this out, we won't look it up. 00:29:51.42\00:29:53.09 But in Romans Chapter 4, he says, 00:29:53.12\00:29:54.72 was Abraham justified before circumcision 00:29:54.76\00:29:56.83 or after circumcision? 00:29:56.86\00:29:58.19 Meaning, are we saved by grace 00:29:58.23\00:30:00.40 and then we have to add some works to it, 00:30:00.43\00:30:02.16 or we saved by grace through faith? 00:30:02.20\00:30:04.57 And Paul makes it very clear, Abraham was justified. 00:30:04.60\00:30:08.00 Abraham was accepted by God as righteous, 00:30:08.04\00:30:11.01 even though he was still uncircumcised 00:30:11.04\00:30:13.24 before the works took place. 00:30:13.27\00:30:16.64 Takeaway number three, 00:30:16.68\00:30:18.18 we are justified by the merits and blood of Jesus alone. 00:30:18.21\00:30:22.62 Works don't add to our justification 00:30:22.65\00:30:24.49 to our standing with God. 00:30:24.52\00:30:25.85 Works don't earn favor with God. 00:30:25.89\00:30:29.89 You know, what's interesting to me 00:30:29.92\00:30:31.56 is that sometimes we take this gospel truth 00:30:31.59\00:30:34.36 found in the Book of Galatians, 00:30:34.40\00:30:35.73 which to me is incredibly liberating. 00:30:35.76\00:30:38.03 We are saved by grace through faith, it's amazing. 00:30:38.07\00:30:40.84 But we can take it, Pastor Kenny, 00:30:40.87\00:30:42.20 and we can tip it on the other side. 00:30:42.24\00:30:44.87 And then we can say, oh, it's all about grace. 00:30:44.91\00:30:48.28 I'll sit back and rest because Jesus has done everything 00:30:48.31\00:30:51.08 and it doesn't matter how I live, 00:30:51.11\00:30:52.81 doesn't matter what I think, it doesn't matter how I speak. 00:30:52.85\00:30:56.05 But that's not what the Word of God teaches. 00:30:56.08\00:30:58.49 You know, in Galatians Chapter 5, 00:30:58.52\00:30:59.99 we have the works of the flesh, right? 00:31:00.02\00:31:01.72 And the fruit of the Spirit. 00:31:01.76\00:31:04.36 And it's so clear, if I do not walk in love, 00:31:04.39\00:31:08.36 if I do not walk in joy, in peace, 00:31:08.40\00:31:10.80 in patience toward others, I am not converted. 00:31:10.83\00:31:14.74 I do not know Jesus. 00:31:14.77\00:31:17.24 Works automatically follow salvation. 00:31:17.27\00:31:20.78 They follow our justification process. 00:31:20.81\00:31:23.08 Let's keep going, verse 7. 00:31:23.11\00:31:24.95 "Therefore, know that only those who are of faith 00:31:24.98\00:31:28.38 are sons of Abraham. 00:31:28.42\00:31:29.85 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify 00:31:29.88\00:31:32.15 the Gentiles by faith, 00:31:32.19\00:31:33.76 preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, 00:31:33.79\00:31:36.52 saying, 'In you all the nations shall be blessed.' 00:31:36.56\00:31:40.33 So then those who are of faith, these would be the Gentiles, 00:31:40.36\00:31:44.93 are blessed with believing Abraham.'" 00:31:44.97\00:31:47.74 Those who were justified before circumcision. 00:31:47.77\00:31:50.84 Takeaway number four, all have access to the gospel. 00:31:50.87\00:31:54.61 All have access to salvation, the Jews and the Gentiles, 00:31:54.64\00:31:58.25 circumcised and uncircumcised. 00:31:58.28\00:32:00.32 All have access to the gospel. 00:32:00.35\00:32:02.92 All can be justified by faith and made righteous with God. 00:32:02.95\00:32:07.06 Takeaway number five, 00:32:07.09\00:32:08.46 be careful when you limit 00:32:08.49\00:32:10.23 who you think God is gonna save. 00:32:10.26\00:32:12.73 When you become a respecter, Pastor Kenny, of persons, 00:32:12.76\00:32:18.03 the gospel is not a club. 00:32:18.07\00:32:19.67 It is for everyone. 00:32:19.70\00:32:21.77 James 2:1, "My brethren, 00:32:21.80\00:32:23.34 do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:32:23.37\00:32:25.54 the Lord of glory, with partiality." 00:32:25.57\00:32:28.24 Now let's get to verse 10. 00:32:28.28\00:32:29.94 "For as many as are of the works of the law." 00:32:29.98\00:32:32.85 These are the Jews or those who depend on the law 00:32:32.88\00:32:35.35 to make them righteous. 00:32:35.38\00:32:37.49 They are under the curse or separated from God. 00:32:37.52\00:32:40.72 For it is written now we quote from Deuteronomy 27:26, 00:32:40.76\00:32:46.53 "It is written, cursed is everyone 00:32:46.56\00:32:49.96 who does not continue in all things 00:32:50.00\00:32:52.80 which are written in the Book of the law to do them," 00:32:52.83\00:32:55.80 referring to Deuteronomy. 00:32:55.84\00:32:58.14 Takeaway number six, be careful not to place 00:32:58.17\00:33:00.88 a wrong interpretation on the role 00:33:00.91\00:33:03.61 of the law in our lives. 00:33:03.65\00:33:06.55 The law is important. 00:33:06.58\00:33:07.92 Romans 7 clearly say the law is holy, just and good. 00:33:07.95\00:33:10.12 The law points our sin and our need of a Savior, 00:33:10.15\00:33:13.46 but the law does not change us. 00:33:13.49\00:33:14.89 Now we get to cursed under the law, verses 11-13, 00:33:14.92\00:33:18.79 "But that no one is justified by the law in the sight 00:33:18.83\00:33:21.06 of God is evident, 00:33:21.10\00:33:23.06 for the just shall live by faith. 00:33:23.10\00:33:24.90 Yet the law is not a faith, 00:33:24.93\00:33:26.37 but the man who does them shall live by them. 00:33:26.40\00:33:29.20 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, 00:33:29.24\00:33:32.61 having become a curse for us." 00:33:32.64\00:33:34.88 We quote again from Deuteronomy 21:22-23, 00:33:34.91\00:33:40.58 "For it is written, cursed is everyone 00:33:40.62\00:33:43.02 who hangs on a tree." 00:33:43.05\00:33:45.35 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law. 00:33:45.39\00:33:47.22 You and I were sold under sin. 00:33:47.26\00:33:50.49 Romans 3:23, 00:33:50.53\00:33:51.86 "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God 00:33:51.89\00:33:54.70 and the wages of sin is death." 00:33:54.73\00:33:56.60 Christ took my sin. 00:33:56.63\00:33:58.83 Christ took your sin, our penalty on the cross. 00:33:58.87\00:34:02.24 He hung on the cross. 00:34:02.27\00:34:05.77 He died in our place that is called 00:34:05.81\00:34:07.58 substitutionary atonement. 00:34:07.61\00:34:09.91 The Lord Jesus took our sin on him on the tree. 00:34:09.94\00:34:15.42 He was not guilty, yet He took my shame. 00:34:15.45\00:34:18.95 He took my guilt. 00:34:18.99\00:34:20.46 He bore the curse for me, so that I could be righteous, 00:34:20.49\00:34:25.39 so that I could be justified, 00:34:25.43\00:34:27.26 so that I could be brought back into right standing with God. 00:34:27.30\00:34:31.47 2 Corinthians 5:21, "God made Him who knew no sin, 00:34:31.50\00:34:35.77 to be sin for us, 00:34:35.80\00:34:37.87 that we might become the righteousness 00:34:37.91\00:34:40.18 of God in Him." 00:34:40.21\00:34:41.78 Galatians 3:14, 00:34:41.81\00:34:43.91 why was he cursed on the tree? 00:34:43.95\00:34:45.35 "That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles," 00:34:45.38\00:34:48.08 that's you and I, "in Christ Jesus, 00:34:48.12\00:34:50.65 that we might receive the promise of the Spirit 00:34:50.69\00:34:52.92 through faith." 00:34:52.95\00:34:54.69 Amen. Wow, praise the Lord. 00:34:54.72\00:34:57.26 It's amazing to see how flooded the Bible is especially 00:34:57.29\00:35:00.73 the New Testament with that what many people consider, 00:35:00.76\00:35:03.50 old look, right, Old Testament book, 00:35:03.53\00:35:06.00 Deuteronomy, we're seeing that the gospel 00:35:06.03\00:35:07.97 is all through this book. 00:35:08.00\00:35:09.34 And it's just such a blessing. Thank you, Jill, for that. 00:35:09.37\00:35:11.77 I'm Ryan Day. 00:35:11.81\00:35:13.17 And I have Wednesday's lesson entitled 00:35:13.21\00:35:15.01 A Prophet Like Unto Thee. 00:35:15.04\00:35:17.41 And we are indeed going to learn how God's speaking 00:35:17.45\00:35:20.62 to Moses told the people, you know, 00:35:20.65\00:35:23.18 after a summation of different things 00:35:23.22\00:35:25.49 that he encouraged them to practice or not practice, 00:35:25.52\00:35:29.09 obviously, He says, look, after Moses, 00:35:29.12\00:35:31.36 I'm going to send another prophet like unto thee. 00:35:31.39\00:35:33.80 We'll get into that in just a moment. 00:35:33.83\00:35:35.43 But the blessing brings out over and over that the Lord 00:35:35.46\00:35:37.73 had warned Israel not to follow after the practices 00:35:37.77\00:35:41.04 of the nations around them. 00:35:41.07\00:35:42.67 On the contrary, they were to be a witness to those nations. 00:35:42.70\00:35:46.44 And, of course, we see that in Deuteronomy 4:6-8, 00:35:46.47\00:35:49.91 God wanted them to be a blessing 00:35:49.94\00:35:51.28 to the rest of the world, that beacon of light 00:35:51.31\00:35:53.05 to everyone else. 00:35:53.08\00:35:54.42 And, of course, in Deuteronomy Chapter 18, 00:35:54.45\00:35:56.75 which is what we're going to be reading from now. 00:35:56.79\00:35:58.72 Deuteronomy 18:9-14, 00:35:58.75\00:36:02.02 Moses again warns them about their specific practices, 00:36:02.06\00:36:05.23 which were an abomination to the Lord. 00:36:05.26\00:36:08.00 And, of course, we see this in Deuteronomy 18:12, 00:36:08.03\00:36:10.77 more specifically, 00:36:10.80\00:36:12.13 but in that context then he tells them 00:36:12.17\00:36:14.57 that they must be blameless before the Lord your God. 00:36:14.60\00:36:18.57 We're gonna see that here in verse 13. 00:36:18.61\00:36:20.81 So again, right now, 00:36:20.84\00:36:22.18 we're going to read that passage, 00:36:22.21\00:36:23.55 Deuteronomy 18:9-14. 00:36:23.58\00:36:26.55 There are some interesting notes here that we can take, 00:36:26.58\00:36:28.75 and I'm going to highlight a few things before 00:36:28.78\00:36:30.59 we get to that specific passage later on, 00:36:30.62\00:36:33.59 that talks about the prophet like unto thee. 00:36:33.62\00:36:36.39 So Deuteronomy 18:9-14. 00:36:36.42\00:36:39.13 Notice what the Bible says. 00:36:39.16\00:36:41.33 It says, "When you come into the land 00:36:41.36\00:36:42.70 which the Lord your God is giving you, 00:36:42.73\00:36:45.37 you shall not learn to follow 00:36:45.40\00:36:47.17 the abominations of those nations. 00:36:47.20\00:36:49.64 There shall not be found among you anyone 00:36:49.67\00:36:52.07 who makes his son or his daughter 00:36:52.11\00:36:53.88 pass through the fire, 00:36:53.91\00:36:55.61 or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, 00:36:55.64\00:36:59.85 or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 00:36:59.88\00:37:03.39 or one who conjures spells, or a medium, 00:37:03.42\00:37:06.72 or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 00:37:06.76\00:37:10.93 For all who do these things are abominations to the Lord. 00:37:10.96\00:37:14.63 And because of these abominations 00:37:14.66\00:37:17.93 the Lord your God drives them out from before you." 00:37:17.97\00:37:21.80 And then verse 13, 00:37:21.84\00:37:23.17 "You shall be blameless before the Lord your God. 00:37:23.20\00:37:27.58 For these nations which you will dispossess 00:37:27.61\00:37:30.61 listened to soothsayers and diviners, 00:37:30.65\00:37:33.65 but as for you, the Lord your God has not appointed 00:37:33.68\00:37:37.39 such for you." 00:37:37.42\00:37:39.42 Now, my question is, before we get into the theme 00:37:39.45\00:37:42.39 of this particular study, 00:37:42.42\00:37:43.93 why in the world would the Lord not want them 00:37:43.96\00:37:47.83 have to do with these particular practices? 00:37:47.86\00:37:50.13 Well, there's an obvious reason, right? 00:37:50.17\00:37:52.10 But I want to look at just a few texts 00:37:52.13\00:37:53.47 to that kind of summarize this. 00:37:53.50\00:37:55.04 Back up here in verse 9 00:37:55.07\00:37:58.54 and starting into the beginning portion of verse 10, it says, 00:37:58.57\00:38:01.71 "You shall not learn to follow 00:38:01.74\00:38:03.08 the abominations of the nations." 00:38:03.11\00:38:04.45 And then notice verse 10, near the beginning, 00:38:04.48\00:38:06.08 it says, "There shall not be found among you, 00:38:06.11\00:38:08.58 anyone who makes his son or his daughter 00:38:08.62\00:38:10.25 pass through the fire." 00:38:10.29\00:38:11.62 You read this a lot throughout the Old Testament, 00:38:11.65\00:38:14.02 you know, evil kings, you know, of the 43, 00:38:14.06\00:38:18.09 kings of Israel and Judah. 00:38:18.13\00:38:19.79 So the above total, 00:38:19.83\00:38:21.20 there were only seven righteous kings 00:38:21.23\00:38:23.37 that did right in the sight of the Lord. 00:38:23.40\00:38:25.50 And there were other ones that the Bible says 00:38:25.53\00:38:26.94 did right in the sight of the Lord but they ended up 00:38:26.97\00:38:28.74 doing evil in the latter portions of their days, 00:38:28.77\00:38:30.51 but only seven from beginning to end out of the 43 kings 00:38:30.54\00:38:34.28 of both Israel and Judah. 00:38:34.31\00:38:35.74 And the majority, 00:38:35.78\00:38:37.11 the vast majority of them 00:38:37.15\00:38:38.71 practiced these certain practices, one of which, 00:38:38.75\00:38:41.02 which is mentioned here, making their sons 00:38:41.05\00:38:43.12 and their daughters pass through the fire. 00:38:43.15\00:38:44.59 What in the world does that mean? 00:38:44.62\00:38:45.95 You know, you probably see some of the pagan practices. 00:38:45.99\00:38:48.52 I've seen, you know, video footage of people 00:38:48.56\00:38:50.16 walking on coals and stuff like that. 00:38:50.19\00:38:51.89 That's actually not what this is referring to. 00:38:51.93\00:38:53.43 Well, that is a pagan practice and you shouldn't do it 00:38:53.46\00:38:55.90 for those false spiritual reasons. 00:38:55.93\00:38:58.43 Literally, these evil kings, one of which we're going 00:38:58.47\00:39:00.87 to read about now in 2 Kings 16:2-4. 00:39:00.90\00:39:04.11 Ahaz was an evil king. 00:39:04.14\00:39:06.34 Ahab was an evil king, Omri was an evil king, Jeroboam, 00:39:06.37\00:39:10.75 you know, Jehoiachin all of these different, 00:39:10.78\00:39:12.71 Manasseh, all of these different kings, 00:39:12.75\00:39:14.62 they were evil kings. 00:39:14.65\00:39:15.98 But interesting, 2 Kings 16:2-4 speaking of Ahaz, 00:39:16.02\00:39:20.12 notice what it says, "Ahaz was twenty years old 00:39:20.16\00:39:22.46 when he became king, 00:39:22.49\00:39:23.83 and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem, 00:39:23.86\00:39:25.23 and he did," notice, 00:39:25.26\00:39:26.59 "He did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord, 00:39:26.63\00:39:28.46 as his father David had done. 00:39:28.50\00:39:30.37 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, 00:39:30.40\00:39:33.17 indeed he made his son," there it is, 00:39:33.20\00:39:35.00 "pass through the fire, 00:39:35.04\00:39:36.37 according to the abominations of the nations 00:39:36.40\00:39:38.64 whom the Lord had cast out from before the children of Israel. 00:39:38.67\00:39:41.58 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, 00:39:41.61\00:39:45.08 on the hills, and under every green tree." 00:39:45.11\00:39:47.58 These were false gods and making their children 00:39:47.62\00:39:50.42 the sons and their daughters pass through the fire. 00:39:50.45\00:39:52.25 What were they doing? 00:39:52.29\00:39:53.62 They were literally sacrificing their children alive, 00:39:53.66\00:39:55.96 burning them alive for these false gods, 00:39:55.99\00:39:58.16 and it's a horrible thing to think of. 00:39:58.19\00:40:00.10 And that's what God saying here to them. 00:40:00.13\00:40:01.56 He said look, 00:40:01.60\00:40:02.93 that's what all these heathen nations do around you. 00:40:02.96\00:40:04.73 You're my people, I'm gonna give you this lamp, 00:40:04.77\00:40:08.27 you're gonna be a light to the world. 00:40:08.30\00:40:09.87 You can't be doing 00:40:09.90\00:40:11.24 what these other nations are doing, 00:40:11.27\00:40:12.61 you know, sacrificing their sons 00:40:12.64\00:40:14.71 and their daughters to these false gods 00:40:14.74\00:40:16.98 who don't even exist. 00:40:17.01\00:40:18.35 And really what they're doing 00:40:18.38\00:40:19.71 is they're taking the lives of their sons 00:40:19.75\00:40:21.08 and their daughters for the devil himself. 00:40:21.12\00:40:22.62 That's exactly what they're doing. 00:40:22.65\00:40:24.29 He goes on to talk about communication 00:40:24.32\00:40:25.99 with the dead, right? 00:40:26.02\00:40:27.36 We just read about that about the soothsayers 00:40:27.39\00:40:28.86 and the mediums and the spiritist. 00:40:28.89\00:40:30.86 1 Samuel 28, again King Saul, 00:40:30.89\00:40:34.73 God had told His people not to practice these things. 00:40:34.76\00:40:38.27 But notice what we find in 1 Samuel 28, 00:40:38.30\00:40:40.30 we're gonna read verses 3, 13 and 14, it says, 00:40:40.34\00:40:43.54 "Now Samuel had died, 00:40:43.57\00:40:44.91 and all of Israel had lamented for him, 00:40:44.94\00:40:46.71 and buried him in Ramah," 00:40:46.74\00:40:48.38 and then it goes on to say, "in his own city, 00:40:48.41\00:40:50.21 and Saul had put the mediums 00:40:50.25\00:40:51.88 and the spiritists out of the land." 00:40:51.91\00:40:53.92 So he knew the truth, right? 00:40:53.95\00:40:55.28 He heard what God had told him, don't practice, 00:40:55.32\00:40:58.29 don't contact these people, 00:40:58.32\00:41:00.06 don't have anything to do with them, 00:41:00.09\00:41:01.42 because they're not of Me. 00:41:01.46\00:41:02.79 But what does that brother going do? 00:41:02.82\00:41:04.53 Verses 13 and 14, he goes and meets with the Witch of Endor. 00:41:04.56\00:41:08.20 And verse 13, it says, and he said, 00:41:08.23\00:41:10.27 "And the king said to her, 'Do not be afraid, 00:41:10.30\00:41:12.07 what do you see?' 00:41:12.10\00:41:13.44 And the woman said to Saul, 00:41:13.47\00:41:14.80 'I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth.' 00:41:14.84\00:41:16.17 And he said to her,' What is his form?' 00:41:16.20\00:41:17.84 And she said, 'It's an old man, it's coming up, 00:41:17.87\00:41:19.61 and he's covered with a mantle, 00:41:19.64\00:41:20.98 and Saul, notice, perceived that it was Samuel.'" 00:41:21.01\00:41:24.61 Notice and he stooped his face to the ground and bowed down. 00:41:24.65\00:41:28.05 What was Saul doing? 00:41:28.08\00:41:29.78 He was automatically disobeying God's command by going 00:41:29.82\00:41:32.99 and communicating with a medium, the spiritist. 00:41:33.02\00:41:36.46 And notice, it's interesting here, 00:41:36.49\00:41:37.83 he actually thinks he's now 00:41:37.86\00:41:39.19 so deceived into believing that he's communicating 00:41:39.23\00:41:41.66 with Samuel because it says here he perceived 00:41:41.70\00:41:44.97 that he was communicating with Samuel, 00:41:45.00\00:41:46.37 he wasn't communicating with Samuel, 00:41:46.40\00:41:48.14 he was communicating with a demon. 00:41:48.17\00:41:49.90 And this is what God is trying to protect them from. 00:41:49.94\00:41:52.61 1 Chronicles 10:13, tells us, 00:41:52.64\00:41:55.11 it says, "So Saul died for his unfaithfulness 00:41:55.14\00:41:57.41 which he had committed against the Lord because," 00:41:57.45\00:41:59.71 notice, "he did not keep the word of the Lord 00:41:59.75\00:42:01.58 and because he had consulted a medium for guidance." 00:42:01.62\00:42:04.82 So why does God not want them to communicate 00:42:04.85\00:42:07.46 with all of these spiritists and these different soothsayers 00:42:07.49\00:42:11.16 and sorcerers. 00:42:11.19\00:42:12.53 1 Timothy 4:1-2, 00:42:12.56\00:42:15.30 now the Spirit expressly says that in latter time, 00:42:15.33\00:42:17.40 someone depart from the faith 00:42:17.43\00:42:19.03 giving heed to deceiving spirits 00:42:19.07\00:42:21.97 and doctrines of demons. 00:42:22.00\00:42:23.51 Revelation 16:13-14, 00:42:23.54\00:42:25.97 "And I saw three unclean spirits 00:42:26.01\00:42:28.31 like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, 00:42:28.34\00:42:30.05 out of the mouth of the beast, 00:42:30.08\00:42:31.41 out of the mouth of the false prophet, 00:42:31.45\00:42:32.85 for they are the spirits of demons, 00:42:32.88\00:42:34.95 performing signs 00:42:34.98\00:42:36.32 which go to the kings of the earth 00:42:36.35\00:42:37.69 and the whole world." 00:42:37.72\00:42:39.05 1 John 4:1, 00:42:39.09\00:42:40.42 "Beloved, believe not every spirit but test the spirits, 00:42:40.46\00:42:43.69 whether they are of God, because many false prophets 00:42:43.73\00:42:46.03 have gone out into the world." 00:42:46.06\00:42:47.53 God did not want them communicating with these, 00:42:47.56\00:42:49.83 these spiritists, these sorcerers, 00:42:49.86\00:42:51.60 the soothsayer, these mediums, 00:42:51.63\00:42:53.20 and all of these different avenues because they're not 00:42:53.23\00:42:56.04 communicating with real dead people. 00:42:56.07\00:42:59.11 The dead sleep in the grave, the Bible says, 00:42:59.14\00:43:01.71 and they await resurrection, 00:43:01.74\00:43:03.38 they're communicating with demons. 00:43:03.41\00:43:04.98 That's why God says, don't do it, don't do it. 00:43:05.01\00:43:07.45 And yet these people often did that, 00:43:07.48\00:43:09.72 and the Lord would correct them for it. 00:43:09.75\00:43:11.69 Let's go into Deuteronomy 18:15-19. 00:43:11.72\00:43:15.69 It says, "The Lord your God will raise up for you 00:43:15.72\00:43:18.46 a prophet like me from your midst, 00:43:18.49\00:43:20.90 from your brethren, him you shall hear, 00:43:20.93\00:43:23.67 according to all you desire of the Lord your God, 00:43:23.70\00:43:26.20 and Horeb in the day of the assembling, saying, 00:43:26.23\00:43:28.30 Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, 00:43:28.34\00:43:31.34 nor let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die. 00:43:31.37\00:43:34.08 And the Lord said to me, what they have spoken is good, 00:43:34.11\00:43:37.78 I will raise up for them a prophet, 00:43:37.81\00:43:39.45 here it is, I will raise up for them 00:43:39.48\00:43:41.22 a prophet like you from among their brethren, 00:43:41.25\00:43:45.09 and will put my words in their mouth 00:43:45.12\00:43:46.76 and he shall speak to them 00:43:46.79\00:43:49.02 all that I have commanded them 00:43:49.06\00:43:50.43 and it shall be that whoever will not hear my words, 00:43:50.46\00:43:52.99 which he speaks in my name, 00:43:53.03\00:43:54.40 I will require it of him." 00:43:54.43\00:43:56.16 What God is saying is look don't go 00:43:56.20\00:43:57.53 to all these other nations 00:43:57.57\00:43:58.90 and listening to their spiritists 00:43:58.93\00:44:00.27 and their mediums and all their sorcerers and, 00:44:00.30\00:44:02.50 you know, all of these witches. 00:44:02.54\00:44:03.94 No, no, no, look, I'm gonna raise a man of God 00:44:03.97\00:44:06.74 from among you just like you Moses 00:44:06.78\00:44:08.78 down the line if they want to hear from me, 00:44:08.81\00:44:10.85 I'm going to speak through my prophet 00:44:10.88\00:44:12.21 shouldn't surprise us, because through Amos 3:7, 00:44:12.25\00:44:16.62 we see very clearly here it assuredly 00:44:16.65\00:44:18.05 the Lord does nothing 00:44:18.09\00:44:20.62 unless He reveals His secret to His servants, the prophets. 00:44:20.66\00:44:25.76 Peter quotes the same point 00:44:25.79\00:44:28.60 when he was referring to Jesus. 00:44:28.63\00:44:30.67 In Acts 3:22, it actually says, 00:44:30.70\00:44:33.07 for Moses truly said to your father's, 00:44:33.10\00:44:34.80 the Lord your God will raise up you a prophet like me 00:44:34.84\00:44:37.77 from among your brethren. 00:44:37.81\00:44:39.14 Again, he was referring to that Prophet being Jesus. 00:44:39.17\00:44:41.84 Jesus was that Prophet in His day, 00:44:41.88\00:44:44.18 to rise up to point people back to God, 00:44:44.21\00:44:46.01 even Stephen, as he's rebuking 00:44:46.05\00:44:48.45 the Sanhedrin right there in Acts 7:37, 00:44:48.48\00:44:51.75 he gives them the history of Israel, 00:44:51.79\00:44:53.36 and he quotes the words of Moses. 00:44:53.39\00:44:54.89 My friends, we don't need to listen to the outside world. 00:44:54.92\00:44:58.33 We just listen to God's Word. 00:44:58.36\00:45:00.10 Listen to God's prophets. 00:45:00.13\00:45:01.96 Don't mess with any spiritists, 00:45:02.00\00:45:03.67 don't mess with any spiritualists. 00:45:03.70\00:45:05.33 Listen to the Lord, listen to His Word, 00:45:05.37\00:45:07.97 and His prophets will lead you unto God. 00:45:08.00\00:45:10.01 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:45:10.04\00:45:12.87 Well, I am Shelley Quinn and the lesson for Thursday 00:45:12.91\00:45:16.18 is my assignment. 00:45:16.21\00:45:17.55 It is called A Fearful Thing. 00:45:17.58\00:45:20.78 You know, when I read 1 John 4:18 that says, 00:45:20.82\00:45:25.19 "There is no fear in perfect love, 00:45:25.22\00:45:28.42 but perfect love casts out fear." 00:45:28.46\00:45:30.99 Doesn't that make you feel good? 00:45:31.03\00:45:33.16 You know, and that's the way I feel about the Lord. 00:45:33.19\00:45:36.53 I don't have that dreaded fear, 00:45:36.56\00:45:42.40 but there's a different kind of fear that I do have. 00:45:42.44\00:45:47.51 And that is the word that is meant to respect, 00:45:47.54\00:45:52.45 to honor, and to submit to his authority 00:45:52.48\00:45:56.28 as a parent with a child. 00:45:56.32\00:45:58.45 Here's the scripture that I used to agonize 00:45:58.49\00:46:01.69 over this scripture. 00:46:01.72\00:46:03.63 And it's in Hebrews 12:28-29. 00:46:03.66\00:46:08.66 Hebrews 12:28 says this, 00:46:08.70\00:46:12.40 "Let us have grace, by which we may serve 00:46:12.43\00:46:17.27 God acceptably with reverence 00:46:17.31\00:46:20.61 and godly fear." 00:46:20.64\00:46:22.34 So far, so good, verse 29, 00:46:22.38\00:46:27.45 "Our God is a consuming fire." 00:46:27.48\00:46:32.85 Mercy. 00:46:32.89\00:46:34.62 I used to think whoa! 00:46:34.66\00:46:36.99 Now, how can you see that 00:46:37.03\00:46:40.76 and how do you match that up 00:46:40.80\00:46:43.40 with the feeling of 1 John 4:18, 00:46:43.43\00:46:45.87 no fear in perfect love? 00:46:45.90\00:46:47.64 If you think about God being a consuming fire, 00:46:47.67\00:46:51.07 let me tell you something. 00:46:51.11\00:46:52.74 God is love. 00:46:52.77\00:46:56.91 God is perfectly sinless. 00:46:56.95\00:46:59.65 Love consumes sin. 00:46:59.68\00:47:02.32 Love cannot commit sin, that's why God is holy. 00:47:02.35\00:47:06.15 His nature is love. 00:47:06.19\00:47:10.03 So love consumes sin. 00:47:10.06\00:47:12.96 You know, God can't do anything 00:47:12.99\00:47:15.96 that is not of love. 00:47:16.00\00:47:18.37 I mean, even God's wrath is His, 00:47:18.40\00:47:23.04 His judgment, His holy righteous judgment, 00:47:23.07\00:47:26.78 and it is Him handling sin 00:47:26.81\00:47:30.71 that's done in love. 00:47:30.75\00:47:33.01 It is love. 00:47:33.05\00:47:34.55 So when we think 00:47:34.58\00:47:38.25 about the reason 00:47:38.29\00:47:40.99 we can't stand in the presence of God 00:47:41.02\00:47:45.29 without the robe of righteousness by faith, 00:47:45.33\00:47:48.56 the righteousness of Jesus Christ 00:47:48.60\00:47:51.20 is because no sin can stand in His presence. 00:47:51.23\00:47:54.67 He's a consuming fire. 00:47:54.70\00:47:56.40 If Shelley Quinn went into the presence of the Lord 00:47:56.44\00:47:59.04 without the robe, 00:47:59.07\00:48:00.41 I would be like a little dry kindling for that fire, 00:48:00.44\00:48:03.18 because he'd consume. 00:48:03.21\00:48:06.11 So that's why he gives us the robe of righteousness. 00:48:06.15\00:48:09.18 And you know what Clifford Goldstein points out, 00:48:09.22\00:48:12.95 our author. 00:48:12.99\00:48:14.32 I just want to read real quick. 00:48:14.36\00:48:15.69 He said the Book of Hebrews 00:48:15.72\00:48:17.06 is just one long exhortation to Jewish believers in Jesus. 00:48:17.09\00:48:20.76 And what it's exhorting them to do is this, 00:48:20.80\00:48:24.20 stay faithful to the Lord. 00:48:24.23\00:48:26.03 This faithfulness, of course, 00:48:26.07\00:48:27.80 should stem from our love for God of who he is, 00:48:27.84\00:48:31.27 His character, and His goodness, 00:48:31.31\00:48:33.78 most powerfully. 00:48:33.81\00:48:36.44 That love most powerfully expressed the cross of Christ. 00:48:36.48\00:48:41.28 And He said, sometimes, though, 00:48:41.32\00:48:42.65 human beings need to be reminded 00:48:42.68\00:48:44.92 of the terrible consequences of falling away. 00:48:44.95\00:48:48.69 And that is, we need to remember, 00:48:48.72\00:48:51.03 in the end, if we didn't accept 00:48:51.06\00:48:54.46 what Jesus has done for us, 00:48:54.50\00:48:58.27 in having paid the penalty for our sins. 00:48:58.30\00:49:02.70 If you don't accept that, guess what? 00:49:02.74\00:49:05.77 You have to pay the penalty yourself for your own sins. 00:49:05.81\00:49:10.61 I want to turn to Hebrews 00:49:10.65\00:49:12.85 and we're going to look at how the writer of Hebrews 00:49:12.88\00:49:15.65 whom I believe was Paul, but some disagree, 00:49:15.68\00:49:18.25 but the writer of Hebrews uses Deuteronomy. 00:49:18.29\00:49:22.39 Hebrews 10:26-31. 00:49:22.42\00:49:26.09 This applies to us all, 00:49:26.13\00:49:29.20 not just to that exhortation to the Jews. 00:49:29.23\00:49:32.83 Hebrews 10:36 says, 00:49:32.87\00:49:34.70 "If we sin willfully 00:49:34.74\00:49:36.40 after we've received the knowledge of the truth..." 00:49:36.44\00:49:39.41 That means if we deliberately are disobeying God, 00:49:39.44\00:49:42.58 this is not a sin of ignorance. 00:49:42.61\00:49:44.51 This is a sin of choice. 00:49:44.55\00:49:46.35 "So if we sin willfully 00:49:46.38\00:49:48.22 after we've received the knowledge of the truth, 00:49:48.25\00:49:51.85 there no longer remains a sacrifice for sin." 00:49:51.89\00:49:54.92 Verse 27, 00:49:54.96\00:49:56.29 "But a certain fearful expectation of judgment 00:49:56.32\00:50:00.30 and fiery indignation 00:50:00.33\00:50:02.26 which will devour the adversaries. 00:50:02.30\00:50:05.33 Now, verse 28, he's gonna quote 00:50:05.37\00:50:08.74 Deuteronomy 17:6 he says, 00:50:08.77\00:50:12.07 "Anyone who has rejected Moses law 00:50:12.11\00:50:16.34 dies without mercy on the testimony 00:50:16.38\00:50:19.58 of two or three witnesses." 00:50:19.61\00:50:21.58 Now, I want to point out, 00:50:21.62\00:50:23.02 not every violator of the law died. 00:50:23.05\00:50:26.02 That's why God put the sacrificial system into place. 00:50:26.05\00:50:30.16 But there was for certain capital offenses, 00:50:30.19\00:50:34.36 what Deuteronomy 17:6 says 00:50:34.40\00:50:37.63 that it couldn't be just hearsay, 00:50:37.67\00:50:39.87 it had to be on the basis of two to three witnesses. 00:50:39.90\00:50:44.14 And let me read this to you because I love this. 00:50:44.17\00:50:46.64 Numbers 15 talks, 00:50:46.68\00:50:50.15 and I'm not going to read the whole thing, but 27-31. 00:50:50.18\00:50:54.05 If there was an unintentional sin, 00:50:54.08\00:50:57.02 they brought a female goat as a sin offering 00:50:57.05\00:51:00.46 and the priest made atonement for their sins 00:51:00.49\00:51:03.16 if it was unintentional, 00:51:03.19\00:51:06.46 but Numbers 15:30. 00:51:06.49\00:51:08.50 Listen, what this says, 00:51:08.53\00:51:10.57 "The person who does anything presumptuously, 00:51:10.60\00:51:14.60 whether he is native-born or stranger, 00:51:14.64\00:51:18.01 that one brings reproach on the Lord." 00:51:18.04\00:51:21.54 So when you're deliberately sinning, 00:51:21.58\00:51:24.01 he shall be cut off from among His people, 00:51:24.05\00:51:26.41 because he's despised the Word of the Lord. 00:51:26.45\00:51:29.08 He's broken His commandment, 00:51:29.12\00:51:31.29 that person shall be completely cut off. 00:51:31.32\00:51:34.26 There is no atonement for that. 00:51:34.29\00:51:36.32 It says, "His sin shall be upon him." 00:51:36.36\00:51:39.19 So defiant rejection 00:51:39.23\00:51:42.60 of God's law 00:51:42.63\00:51:44.73 is apostasy. 00:51:44.77\00:51:48.87 What is the punishment for rejection? 00:51:48.90\00:51:52.81 Well, in the Old Testament, it was death by stoning. 00:51:52.84\00:51:55.91 So let's look at what Hebrews 10:29 says, 00:51:55.94\00:51:58.71 "Of how much worse punishment do you suppose 00:51:58.75\00:52:01.32 will be thought worthy, 00:52:01.35\00:52:03.12 he who has trample the Son of God underfoot, 00:52:03.15\00:52:07.46 counted the blood of the covenant." 00:52:07.49\00:52:10.23 Remember, in the Old Testament, and Exodus 24, 00:52:10.26\00:52:13.53 that when Moses had written the Book of the Covenant, 00:52:13.56\00:52:16.67 he built an altar, he sacrificed, 00:52:16.70\00:52:19.40 and he ratified the covenant with blood. 00:52:19.43\00:52:24.24 But Hebrews 13:20 tells us it is Jesus Christ. 00:52:24.27\00:52:28.64 It is His blood of the eternal covenant of God. 00:52:28.68\00:52:34.22 It is Jesus who ratified the new covenant 00:52:34.25\00:52:38.82 with His blood. 00:52:38.85\00:52:40.19 So it's counted the blood 00:52:40.22\00:52:41.79 of the covenant by which he was sanctified, 00:52:41.82\00:52:44.43 a common thing and insulted the Spirit of grace. 00:52:44.46\00:52:49.06 When we reject Christ, 00:52:49.10\00:52:51.70 when we count His precious blood is no big deal. 00:52:51.73\00:52:55.94 He died on the cross. 00:52:55.97\00:52:58.71 If we reject His Spirit, 00:52:58.74\00:53:02.11 I'll tell you what? 00:53:02.14\00:53:04.31 The Spirit is one who testifies of him. 00:53:04.35\00:53:06.48 There are our two witnesses against us. 00:53:06.51\00:53:09.25 Yeah, I'll tell you. 00:53:09.28\00:53:11.02 So if we treat them with contempt, 00:53:11.05\00:53:14.56 we're guilty of apostasy. 00:53:14.59\00:53:17.63 Now, I want to, I'm gonna have to... 00:53:17.66\00:53:20.90 I just want to say this word 00:53:20.93\00:53:22.26 and then I get to the next one real quick 00:53:22.30\00:53:23.80 because I want to show you in Deuteronomy. 00:53:23.83\00:53:27.20 Those who sin defiantly are rejecting 00:53:27.24\00:53:32.74 the free gift of salvation by grace. 00:53:32.77\00:53:36.34 Now we go on and I'm rushing through this, 00:53:36.38\00:53:38.81 but Hebrews 10:30, once again, 00:53:38.85\00:53:41.38 we see that Paul is going to buttress 00:53:41.42\00:53:45.19 one of his arguments 00:53:45.22\00:53:46.72 of what he is writing with a quote from Deuteronomy. 00:53:46.76\00:53:51.16 Hebrews 10:30 says, 00:53:51.19\00:53:53.56 "We know him who said, vengeance is mine, 00:53:53.60\00:53:56.90 I will repay, says the Lord. 00:53:56.93\00:53:58.97 And again, the Lord will judge His people." 00:53:59.00\00:54:04.14 Then he says, "It's a fearful thing 00:54:04.17\00:54:06.71 to fall into the hands of the living God." 00:54:06.74\00:54:09.38 So it's Deuteronomy 00:54:09.41\00:54:13.72 32:35-36, that he's quoting here 00:54:13.75\00:54:17.82 because God says vengeance is mine. 00:54:17.85\00:54:19.59 He never gave that prerogative to anybody else, 00:54:19.62\00:54:21.86 because He's the only one that knows everything. 00:54:21.89\00:54:24.79 And He says, in verse 36, 00:54:24.83\00:54:28.16 the Lord judges people, 00:54:28.20\00:54:31.23 and I have to tell you real quickly, 00:54:31.27\00:54:33.60 this one goes on to say 00:54:33.64\00:54:35.14 and have compassion on his servants 00:54:35.17\00:54:38.51 when he sees that their power is gone. 00:54:38.54\00:54:42.48 Judgment is a two-sided coin. 00:54:42.51\00:54:45.75 On the one side, 00:54:45.78\00:54:47.12 God judges the evil. 00:54:47.15\00:54:51.55 He judges and He assigns vengeance to those, 00:54:51.59\00:54:56.56 punishment for their sin, but the flip side 00:54:56.59\00:55:00.13 is that there's God's judgment on the righteous, 00:55:00.16\00:55:05.23 and its further vindication, 00:55:05.27\00:55:07.94 He has compassion for those who love Him 00:55:07.97\00:55:13.17 and obey Him. 00:55:13.21\00:55:14.64 And He judges in favor of them. Amen. 00:55:14.68\00:55:19.41 That's right. 00:55:19.45\00:55:20.78 Present truth in Deuteronomy, 00:55:20.82\00:55:22.15 and Deuteronomy in the New Testament, 00:55:22.18\00:55:24.49 some closing thoughts from each one 00:55:24.52\00:55:25.85 of our presenters. 00:55:25.89\00:55:27.62 You know, I was thinking about this quickly 00:55:27.66\00:55:29.36 about loving one another as Christ love us. 00:55:29.39\00:55:31.83 And I found this in My Life Today, 187, says, 00:55:31.86\00:55:34.60 "We shall have to face one another in the judgment, 00:55:34.63\00:55:38.13 and behold a record of our thoughts 00:55:38.17\00:55:40.04 and our words and our deeds, 00:55:40.07\00:55:42.24 not as we have viewed them, 00:55:42.27\00:55:45.11 but as how they were in truth. 00:55:45.14\00:55:48.21 Amen. Yeah. Lord have mercy. 00:55:48.24\00:55:50.48 As I look at Tuesday's lesson, Curse Under A Tree, 00:55:50.51\00:55:52.85 I'm reminded over and over again of our God, 00:55:52.88\00:55:56.35 the Creator God, the God who made everything, 00:55:56.38\00:56:00.29 willing to humble Himself and take my curse, 00:56:00.32\00:56:03.43 take my shame, take my punishment, 00:56:03.46\00:56:06.49 so that I could live forever with Him. 00:56:06.53\00:56:08.06 That's love. That's right. 00:56:08.10\00:56:09.63 Amen. 00:56:09.66\00:56:11.00 We read this earlier, 1 John 4:1 it says, 00:56:11.03\00:56:13.67 "Beloved, do not believe every spirit 00:56:13.70\00:56:15.30 but test the spirits, try the spirits, 00:56:15.34\00:56:18.34 whether they are of God because many false prophets 00:56:18.37\00:56:20.41 have gone out into the world." 00:56:20.44\00:56:21.78 How do we test the spirits? Well, we use the Word of God. 00:56:21.81\00:56:24.75 That's why Isaiah 8:20, says, 00:56:24.78\00:56:26.92 "To the law and to the testimony 00:56:26.95\00:56:28.68 if they do not speak according to this word, 00:56:28.72\00:56:31.39 it is because there is no light in them." 00:56:31.42\00:56:34.89 Our God is a consuming fire. 00:56:34.92\00:56:37.06 He burns the dross of sin off of us, that's the process 00:56:37.09\00:56:40.43 of sanctification but when it comes to judgment, 00:56:40.46\00:56:43.20 Romans 8:1 00:56:43.23\00:56:44.57 is one of my favorite scriptures. 00:56:44.60\00:56:46.37 "There is therefore now no condemnation for those 00:56:46.40\00:56:50.27 who are in Christ Jesus 00:56:50.31\00:56:52.07 who do not walk according to the flesh, 00:56:52.11\00:56:55.48 but according to the Spirit." 00:56:55.51\00:56:56.85 I love it. I love it. 00:56:56.88\00:56:58.28 Each one of the points you made, 00:56:58.31\00:57:00.12 Kenny, God loves everyone. 00:57:00.15\00:57:02.85 We are one family, Jill, 00:57:02.88\00:57:04.89 the gospel is not a club, it's for everyone. 00:57:10.16\00:57:12.96 I can't read my writing, I should have been a doctor. 00:57:12.99\00:57:15.10 Ryan, God wants to protect us from deception. 00:57:15.13\00:57:17.27 Shelley, God's grace makes us fireproof. 00:57:17.30\00:57:21.30 Deuteronomy quoted by Jesus three times 00:57:21.34\00:57:24.21 when he was tempted. 00:57:24.24\00:57:25.57 What a powerful book it's been. 00:57:25.61\00:57:27.51 Don't go away because, well, 00:57:27.54\00:57:29.34 you can go away for now but join us for our next 00:57:29.38\00:57:31.55 and final lesson number 13, 00:57:31.58\00:57:33.68 which is Deuteronomy in Present Truth, 00:57:33.72\00:57:35.65 The Resurrection of Moses. 00:57:35.68\00:57:37.02 Amen. Amen. 00:57:38.95\00:57:40.29
