over and over again reminded you

that Deuteronomy was one

of the most quoted
books by Jesus Christ.

And we're going to
see that more than ever

here in Matthew Chapter 4.

He is tempted three
times and he goes back

to the Book of
Deuteronomy time and time again.

Now, this temptation
took place in the wilderness.

Deuteronomy takes
place in the wilderness

just before they enter
into the Promised Land,

so there's a connection
that has been made there.

And, of course, we understand

that God's people in
the wilderness failed

to keep covenant with God,

they failed to keep
their end of the bargain.

But guess who didn't
fail in the wilderness

to keep their

Jesus Christ, the second Adam,
the one who stood in our place

devil on the lust of the flesh,

and the pride of life,

that all the
temptations that come to us

come out of these
three leading temptations.

Well, Jesus Christ is called
to be tempted in all points

such as we are, and
these are the three points

because there's no
other temptation that comes

to us that doesn't come to one
of these three leading points,

so in order for Jesus
to sympathize with us,

to empathize with us,

to be able to relate
to us in our temptations,

He has to be tempted
in these three points,

but not just in His
day-to-day activity.

He's taken out
into the wilderness,

He's taken out into a
place where He fast for 40 days

so that He can feel the frailty,

the weakness of
human nature such as we do.

In that context, He
finally is left alone,

you know, He's in
converse with God,

He's connected with
God for those 40 days

and 40 nights, but then finally

the presence of
God is pulled away,

and Jesus is left there,

like we are in our
sin and temptation,

feeling like God
has abandoned us,

feeling like where is God?

And in comes Satan.

And what is Jesus going to
do in this kind of situation?

Well, again, He's been
tempted like as we are,

He's going to trust like

we need to do
on the Word of God.

That's where He needs to turn.

He needs to turn
to the Word of God

and that's what He
does over and over again.

want us to remember

on proving that
we're God's children

Do this and I'll believe
that you're a child of God,

but Jesus
resists as we need to do.

He resists this temptation

Now, it's really interesting

when we look at this temptation,

you know, Jesus is tempted
to turn stones into bread.

What kind of
temptation is that for us?

How does Jesus relate to us
in that kind of a temptation?

Right?

Well, we need to
remember that Jesus was God man,

Jesus was divine-human.
00:08:11.89\00:08:14.09
He laid aside His divinity,
but it was still there.

He could have
turned stones into bread.
00:08:16.19\00:08:17.99
And let me tell
you, it was hard for Him
00:08:18.03\00:08:20.80
not to respond to
this, because you can imagine
00:08:20.83\00:08:23.47
He's got the divinity in Him,
00:08:23.50\00:08:24.83
He doesn't have to run
down to the store to sin, right?
00:08:24.87\00:08:26.60
He doesn't have to
go around the corner.

He doesn't have to do anything,
but just speak, even blink,

perhaps, and those stones
will be turned into bread.

Can you imagine
that kind of temptation,

with that kind of
power that He has within Him?

But if Jesus
would have done that,

He would have
relied upon Himself,

instead of relying upon God.

He would have
relied upon His divinity

instead of relying
upon God's divinity.

And that would have left us
hopeless because the only thing

we can rely on
is the power of God,

the divinity of
God, the Word of God.

And so Jesus came to give us
that example, He says, listen,

I'm not even going to
parley with you Satan,

think about it for a second,

it is written, man does
not live by bread alone,

but by every word that proceeds
out of the mouth of God.

And then the devil
comes at Him again.

You ever notice how the
devil comes at us again,

you know, and again, right?

He comes out to
Him again and again,

and that's why it's so
important for us to recognize

that Jesus Christ is our example

because He's taking all
the assaults of the devil,

one after another,

and He's telling
us what we need to do

when we are
attacked by the devil,

we need to go
to the Word of God.

And so He says,
here, the devil, of course,

says here in verse 5,

"And the devil takes
him up into the holy city,

he sets him upon a
pinnacle of the temple,

and he says to him, 'If
thou be the Son of God..."

Here we go again, right? Okay.

I already have
had this temptation

to disbelieve
that I'm God's child.

I've already had
this temptation because,

you know, I look
at what I'm doing,

and I don't see
it there but again,

the devil comes
at us and he says,

if you're a child of
God, if you're a Son of God,

if you're a daughter
of God, he's coming at us

right there where
it matters the most.

If you're the Son of God

cast yourself
down, for it is written.

That's right. Yeah.

Satan will use the
Word of God against us.

commands of God against us.

Powerful Psalm that we
need to claim for ourselves.

Jesus said unto him,
verse 7, you ready for this?

him, 'It is written...'"

What's the next word? Again.

You see, we've got to
go to the Word of God.

Sometimes we just need

the weight of
evidence of God's Word.

You know we've got to saturate
our minds with the Word of God,

you know, we've got to
get that gospel sandwich,

we need to be
filled with God's Word,

so that we can
resist the assaults of Satan

as he comes against us,
promoting our weaknesses,

promoting our
failures, pointing to the things

that we're not
doing that are in harmony
00:11:16.50\00:11:18.77
with the Word of God.

And so Jesus says, in
verse 7, "It is written again,

thou shalt not
tempt the Lord thy God."

Again, you get that word, right?

Again, the devil comes
in, he's relentless, isn't he?

He's relentless in his attacks.

"Again, the devil takes Him up

into an
exceedingly high mountain,

he shows him all the
kingdoms of the world,

the glory of them
and he says to Him,

all these I will give you,

if you will fall

That's what he really wants.

He really wants worship.

Satan wants to put
himself in the place of God.

He wants to be in
the sides of the north.

He wants to be in the
Mount of the Congregation.

He wants to receive the
worship that belongs only to God

and get us that and
so many subtle ways.

I mean, here he's
quoting the Bible.

But Jesus says unto
him, get the hint, Satan.

Why can he say this?

Why can Jesus say
this, for it is written,

thou shalt
worship the Lord thy God,

and Him only shall thou serve?

You know this is so powerful.

This is so powerful because
Jesus doesn't let Satan define

who He is and neither should we.

We are who God says we are,

not who Satan
tempts us to think we are.

The greatest temptations that
come to us aren't those things,

you know, to lust after.

The great temptations that
come to us are the temptations

to insecurity.

And when we're insecure about
ourselves in our relationship

with God that's
when temptations have

their way with us.

We need to get into that
secure relationship with God.

He is our Father.
We are His children.

He loves us.

He's forgiven us,
He's justified us.

We are saved by
His righteousness.

And when we have that assurance,

Ephesians 2:9-10 says,

we become his
workmanship, His poiema,

we become his workmanship,

Now, my question is,
before we get into the theme

would the Lord not want them

these particular practices?

Well, there's an
obvious reason, right?

But I want to look
at just a few texts

to that kind of summarize this.

Back up here in verse 9

and starting into the beginning

seven righteous kings

that did right in
the sight of the Lord.

ones that the Bible says

doing evil in the

And the majority,

the vast majority of them

practiced these certain
practices, one of which,

world does that mean?

You know, you probably see
some of the pagan practices.

walking on coals

Well, that is a pagan
practice and you shouldn't do it

spiritual reasons.

kings, one of which we're going

Ahaz was an evil king.

Ahab was an evil king,
Omri was an evil king, Jeroboam,

you know, Jehoiachin
all of these different,

Manasseh, all of
these different kings,

they were evil kings.

"He did not do what was
right in the sight of the Lord,

as his father David had done.

But he walked in the
way of the kings of Israel,

abominations of the nations

That means if we
