Sister Jill Morikone. 00:01:55.78\00:01:59.28 Thank you, Sister Shelley. 00:01:59.31\00:02:00.65 I'm looking at what does the Lord require? 00:02:00.68\00:02:02.48 Excited about the study. 00:02:02.52\00:02:03.89 It's going to be exciting study, 00:02:03.92\00:02:05.62 and Pastor James Rafferty. 00:02:05.65\00:02:07.26 Hi, Shelley and the panel. 00:02:07.29\00:02:08.92 We are going to be looking, in Thursday's lesson, 00:02:08.96\00:02:10.69 at the connection between Deuteronomy 00:02:10.73\00:02:12.33 and Daniel Chapter 9. 00:02:12.36\00:02:14.06 Ooh-ooh, that's going to be a good one. 00:02:14.10\00:02:17.10 Our memory text, 00:02:17.13\00:02:19.07 I'm going to read the memory text, 00:02:19.10\00:02:21.37 then we're going to pray. 00:02:21.40\00:02:22.77 The memory text is one of my favorites, 00:02:22.80\00:02:25.27 Deuteronomy 4:29, 00:02:25.31\00:02:27.81 "From there you will seek the Lord your God, 00:02:27.84\00:02:31.51 and you will find him if, 00:02:31.55\00:02:33.92 if you seek Him with all of your heart, 00:02:33.95\00:02:38.22 and with all of your soul." 00:02:38.25\00:02:40.09 We want to do that, just let's seek the Lord. 00:02:40.12\00:02:43.56 Jill, would you like to have our opening prayer? 00:02:43.59\00:02:46.19 Holy Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, 00:02:46.23\00:02:48.40 grateful for the study in the Book of Deuteronomy, 00:02:48.43\00:02:51.13 grateful for the privilege we have of reading 00:02:51.17\00:02:53.64 and opening up Your Word. 00:02:53.67\00:02:55.00 And we ask just now for the anointing 00:02:55.04\00:02:57.67 of Your Holy Spirit that You would teach us what we need. 00:02:57.71\00:03:01.48 And we thank you in Jesus' name. 00:03:01.51\00:03:03.48 Amen. Amen. 00:03:03.51\00:03:04.85 Amen. Amen and amen. 00:03:04.88\00:03:06.21 I am just going to jump right into Sunday's lesson, 00:03:06.25\00:03:09.75 which is called The Book of the Law. 00:03:09.78\00:03:13.32 And we have to remember, 00:03:13.36\00:03:16.06 we get so confused 00:03:16.09\00:03:17.43 if we don't look in context at what the law is. 00:03:17.46\00:03:21.76 People refer to, and the Bible refers 00:03:21.80\00:03:24.17 to God's Ten Commandments as the law. 00:03:24.20\00:03:26.90 The Law of Moses, 00:03:26.94\00:03:29.47 when the Bible says Law of Moses, 00:03:29.50\00:03:31.47 it's talking about the first five books of the Bible, 00:03:31.51\00:03:34.28 when it is talking about the law and the prophets, 00:03:34.31\00:03:37.11 that's all of the Old Testament. 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.55 It gets most confusing, I think, in the New Testament, 00:03:39.58\00:03:42.38 when we're talking about the law. 00:03:42.42\00:03:43.79 You have to read in context 00:03:43.82\00:03:47.06 what law is being referred to. 00:03:47.09\00:03:50.93 But the Book of the Law, 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.80 and I'm going to quote 00:03:53.83\00:03:55.16 directly from our Sabbath School quarterly. 00:03:55.20\00:03:57.90 It says, "Scholars have long concluded 00:03:57.93\00:04:01.94 that the Book of the Law was Deuteronomy, 00:04:01.97\00:04:06.71 which apparently had been lost 00:04:06.74\00:04:09.88 to the people for many years." 00:04:09.91\00:04:13.31 The Book of the Law, 00:04:13.35\00:04:15.25 what Moses wrote, 00:04:15.28\00:04:17.32 as they were standing at the edge of promise 00:04:17.35\00:04:19.92 getting ready to go into the Promised Land, 00:04:19.95\00:04:22.99 what he spoke, the sermons that he spoke 00:04:23.02\00:04:25.86 to the second generation, 00:04:25.89\00:04:28.80 the children of the one that didn't make it 00:04:28.83\00:04:31.90 into the Promised Land. 00:04:31.93\00:04:34.37 This is a repeat and enlarge, if you will, 00:04:34.40\00:04:38.24 of the Book of the Covenant that God gave him 00:04:38.27\00:04:43.08 in Exodus on Sinai. 00:04:43.11\00:04:46.08 So let me give you the backstory 00:04:46.11\00:04:49.15 to how the book was lost and how it was found. 00:04:49.18\00:04:52.55 We're going to look at, 00:04:52.59\00:04:55.46 I'm going to choose, I've chosen a parallel account 00:04:55.49\00:04:58.19 to 2 Kings 22, 00:04:58.23\00:05:00.16 because if we go to 2 Chronicles 34, 00:05:00.20\00:05:03.37 there's just a few more details 00:05:03.40\00:05:05.93 as it introduces King Josiah. 00:05:05.97\00:05:10.11 2 Chronicles 34:1, 00:05:10.14\00:05:15.64 "Josiah was eight years old 00:05:15.68\00:05:18.58 when he became king and he reigned thirty-one years 00:05:18.61\00:05:21.02 in Jerusalem. 00:05:21.05\00:05:22.42 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord. 00:05:22.45\00:05:25.99 He walked in the ways of his father David, 00:05:26.02\00:05:28.59 he did not turn aside 00:05:28.62\00:05:30.79 to the right hand or to the left. 00:05:30.83\00:05:33.03 For in the eighth year," 00:05:33.06\00:05:35.60 that means he would have been 16 years old, 00:05:35.63\00:05:37.63 "the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, 00:05:37.67\00:05:41.07 he began to seek the God of his father David." 00:05:41.10\00:05:45.54 And it's referring to David as his forefather, actually. 00:05:45.57\00:05:48.81 "In the twelfth year, 00:05:48.84\00:05:50.18 he would have been 20 years old, 00:05:50.21\00:05:51.55 he began to purge Judah, Jerusalem, high places, 00:05:51.58\00:05:55.35 these would have been the Canaanite worship centers 00:05:55.38\00:05:57.72 that Israel had taken over the wooden images, 00:05:57.75\00:06:00.89 the carved images, and the molded images." 00:06:00.92\00:06:04.63 And then, by his 12th year, 00:06:04.66\00:06:06.90 he initiated a purge of pagan religion, 00:06:06.93\00:06:10.57 and he tore down the high places, 00:06:10.60\00:06:12.90 he tore down the altars of veil, 00:06:12.93\00:06:15.54 the fertility god of Canaan, 00:06:15.57\00:06:18.01 and the Asherah, which were, 00:06:18.04\00:06:21.21 "objects that were associated with Baal worship." 00:06:21.24\00:06:24.85 So in 2 Kings 22, 00:06:24.88\00:06:27.72 it's talking about his 18th year. 00:06:27.75\00:06:30.35 He's 26 years old, 00:06:30.39\00:06:32.85 and Josiah has now ordered 00:06:32.89\00:06:36.76 repairs for the Temple of Yahweh God. 00:06:36.79\00:06:40.86 So let's look at 2 King 22:8. 00:06:40.90\00:06:45.23 You know what happens? 00:06:45.27\00:06:46.60 As they begin to repair the temple, 00:06:46.63\00:06:49.27 the high priest finds 00:06:49.30\00:06:52.37 the Book of the Law. 00:06:52.41\00:06:54.14 And this is what he says, 00:06:54.18\00:06:55.71 "I have found the Book of the Law." 00:06:55.74\00:06:59.18 Now, and this is a covenant document. 00:06:59.21\00:07:01.65 This is the Book of Deuteronomy that contained 00:07:01.68\00:07:03.89 the blessings for obedience, 00:07:03.92\00:07:05.95 and the curses for disobedience. 00:07:05.99\00:07:08.82 So as Clifford Goldstein has told us, 00:07:08.86\00:07:12.19 scholars have long concluded that the Book of the Law 00:07:12.23\00:07:15.86 was the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:07:15.90\00:07:17.30 And it's mentioned in a number of places in Deuteronomy, 00:07:17.33\00:07:21.60 but most specifically, Deuteronomy 31:26, 00:07:21.64\00:07:25.21 after Moses wrote down, 00:07:25.24\00:07:27.51 that he repeat and enlarge 00:07:27.54\00:07:29.11 of the Book of the Covenant from Exodus 24. 00:07:29.14\00:07:32.38 Moses says, "Take this Book of the Law 00:07:32.41\00:07:35.18 and put it beside the Ark of the Covenant 00:07:35.22\00:07:37.75 of the Lord your God, 00:07:37.79\00:07:39.69 that it may be there as a witness against you." 00:07:39.72\00:07:44.73 That's interesting. 00:07:44.76\00:07:46.13 Now, how could a scroll, 00:07:46.16\00:07:48.56 the Book of the Law would fit on the scroll rolled up, 00:07:48.60\00:07:51.73 put in the side pocket, 00:07:51.77\00:07:53.97 the Ten Commandment Law of God was inside the Ark, 00:07:54.00\00:07:57.37 written on stone by the finger of God to show permanency. 00:07:57.41\00:08:01.24 It was, the Ark was His throne. 00:08:01.28\00:08:04.58 So the Ten Commandments are, 00:08:04.61\00:08:07.82 you could say the foundation of God's government 00:08:07.85\00:08:10.95 and the mercy seat was over, wasn't it? 00:08:10.99\00:08:14.19 But how could a scroll so important be lost? 00:08:14.22\00:08:20.10 When you think about this, it's amazing. Yeah. 00:08:20.13\00:08:22.66 But you have to remember Josiah, 00:08:22.70\00:08:26.00 good King Josiah was the son of King Amon, 00:08:26.03\00:08:31.64 who was the son of King Manasseh. 00:08:31.67\00:08:36.11 So these were two 00:08:36.14\00:08:37.75 of the most wicked kings in Judah's history. 00:08:37.78\00:08:41.98 And they did grotesque pagan practices. 00:08:42.02\00:08:46.72 They had no interest in the Book of the Covenant, 00:08:46.76\00:08:49.19 the Book of the Law. 00:08:49.22\00:08:50.76 So it condemned their practices, right? Right. 00:08:50.79\00:08:54.86 So they ignored it, they set it aside, 00:08:54.90\00:08:59.90 perhaps it was even hidden until Josiah's time 00:08:59.93\00:09:04.37 when the high priest finds it. 00:09:04.41\00:09:06.71 He brings it to the scribe of Josiah 00:09:06.74\00:09:09.31 which would be the secretary of the king. 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.58 And, boy, a scribe reads it and he goes, 00:09:11.61\00:09:16.42 he takes it to Josiah, 00:09:16.45\00:09:19.55 he reads it to Josiah and Josiah, 00:09:19.59\00:09:23.56 his response, we see it in 2 Kings 22:11-14. 00:09:23.59\00:09:28.30 But what is his response? 00:09:28.33\00:09:30.27 He has a heart that is sensitive to the Lord. 00:09:30.30\00:09:33.10 He has never heard the words of the Book of the Law. 00:09:33.13\00:09:36.84 And he is mortified. 00:09:36.87\00:09:39.71 He's thinking about the condition of his kingdom. 00:09:39.74\00:09:42.64 He knows they've broken covenant with the Lord. 00:09:42.68\00:09:45.51 He tears his clothes, 00:09:45.55\00:09:47.32 which was a sign of grief and repentance. 00:09:47.35\00:09:51.75 He humbled himself before the Lord. 00:09:51.79\00:09:54.29 Josiah, though, 00:09:54.32\00:09:57.36 I think did something really smart. 00:09:57.39\00:09:59.69 He wanted confirmation of his understanding? 00:09:59.73\00:10:03.13 Have you ever studied something? 00:10:03.16\00:10:04.80 I know we do it, 'cause we'll study something, 00:10:04.83\00:10:07.50 and we'll come and say, 00:10:07.54\00:10:08.87 "Now this is what I'm seeing, what do you think? 00:10:08.90\00:10:11.34 Am I seeing this right? 00:10:11.37\00:10:13.51 "Josiah wanted confirmation. 00:10:13.54\00:10:15.44 So he gets this little delegation 00:10:15.48\00:10:17.28 of people together that he really trusted 00:10:17.31\00:10:19.85 his spiritual leaders, 00:10:19.88\00:10:21.42 and he sends them to a highly respected prophet as Huldah. 00:10:21.45\00:10:25.89 And when he goes to Huldah, they go to Huldah, 00:10:25.92\00:10:29.26 she confirms the bad news. 00:10:29.29\00:10:31.63 You are covenant breakers. 00:10:31.66\00:10:33.70 This is Josiah's worst fear, 00:10:33.73\00:10:35.83 hey, God is going to bring disaster on your nation. 00:10:35.86\00:10:40.70 You're guilty of idolatry and spiritual abandonment of God. 00:10:40.74\00:10:46.01 I mean, this was a bad nation. 00:10:46.04\00:10:48.58 And we know that the Bible says God opposes the proud, 00:10:48.61\00:10:52.48 but He gives grace to the humble. 00:10:52.51\00:10:54.65 And I just have to throw this scripture in 'cause I love it. 00:10:54.68\00:10:57.59 Isaiah 66:2 says, 00:10:57.62\00:11:00.86 God, this is who God esteems, 00:11:00.89\00:11:04.33 the humble and the contrite in spirit, 00:11:04.36\00:11:08.36 and the one who trembles at His word. 00:11:08.40\00:11:10.87 Amen. 00:11:10.90\00:11:12.23 And, you know, Josiah was trembling at God's word. 00:11:12.27\00:11:16.54 And so God esteemed him. 00:11:16.57\00:11:18.77 And you know what He says to Josiah? 00:11:18.81\00:11:20.71 I'm not going to bring all of this tragedy in your day. 00:11:20.74\00:11:23.81 You're going to go to your rest in peace. 00:11:23.85\00:11:26.98 But it is inevitable afterwards. 00:11:27.02\00:11:29.08 So we look at 2 Kings Chapter 23. 00:11:29.12\00:11:32.52 Josiah is determined 00:11:32.55\00:11:34.19 he's going to lead a reformation 00:11:34.22\00:11:36.73 and he vowed that he is going to honor God 00:11:36.76\00:11:40.10 with all of his heart, 00:11:40.13\00:11:41.56 that he's going to walk in God's ways, 00:11:41.60\00:11:43.60 and he's going to bring his nation 00:11:43.63\00:11:45.50 back into covenant compliance. 00:11:45.53\00:11:47.74 So he arranges a very solemn 00:11:47.77\00:11:52.34 covenant renewal ceremony. 00:11:52.37\00:11:54.68 He reads all the words of Book of the Law to the people. 00:11:54.71\00:11:57.45 And he then gets the people 00:11:57.48\00:12:02.38 to make this commitment. 00:12:02.42\00:12:05.32 As Moses had instigated this same type 00:12:05.35\00:12:07.92 of thing right at the edge of the promise, 00:12:07.96\00:12:10.43 so he cleanse the temple. 00:12:10.46\00:12:12.43 He's purging it of all the objects of paganism. 00:12:12.46\00:12:16.67 And I've got to let you know 00:12:16.70\00:12:18.03 a few of the things this is including. 00:12:18.07\00:12:20.70 In 2 Kings 23:7, this is appalling. 00:12:20.74\00:12:25.27 The living quarters 00:12:25.31\00:12:27.21 of the male shrine prostitutes for pagan gods 00:12:27.24\00:12:32.38 had been constructed right inside God's temple. 00:12:32.41\00:12:36.95 Can you imagine that? 00:12:36.99\00:12:38.75 2 Kings 23:10. 00:12:38.79\00:12:41.52 He destroys the shrine 00:12:41.56\00:12:43.93 where the people had been sacrificing by fire, 00:12:43.96\00:12:48.20 in the fire, their children to the pagan god Molech. 00:12:48.23\00:12:53.20 2 Kings 23:12. 00:12:53.23\00:12:55.64 The pagan altars had actually been erected in the two courts 00:12:55.67\00:13:01.54 of the Lord's temple. 00:13:01.58\00:13:03.51 So what does he do? 00:13:03.55\00:13:04.88 He destroys all of these pagan things. 00:13:04.91\00:13:08.88 And here's what I love, 2 Kings 23:21. 00:13:08.92\00:13:13.99 "Then the king commanded all the people saying, 00:13:14.02\00:13:17.93 'Keep the Passover to the Lord your God.'" 00:13:17.96\00:13:20.26 They're still under the ceremonial system 00:13:20.30\00:13:22.43 of the Old Covenant. 00:13:22.46\00:13:24.07 But listen to what he says, 00:13:24.10\00:13:25.93 "As it is written in this Book 00:13:25.97\00:13:29.90 of the Covenant." 00:13:29.94\00:13:32.27 See, so we see it's called the Book of the Law, 00:13:32.31\00:13:35.14 but it's also called the Book of Covenant. 00:13:35.18\00:13:39.28 Now have to read our Sabbath School quarterly quote, 00:13:39.31\00:13:42.15 says, "People strayed far from God's Covenant 00:13:42.18\00:13:45.29 of love and truth that He entrusted to them. 00:13:45.32\00:13:48.22 But instead of remaining 00:13:48.26\00:13:50.03 the holy people they were supposed to be, 00:13:50.06\00:13:52.46 they compromised with the world, 00:13:52.49\00:13:55.06 even though they often thought, 00:13:55.10\00:13:58.87 'Well, we're just fine with the Lord. 00:13:58.90\00:14:01.30 Thank you very much.'" 00:14:01.34\00:14:03.67 What a dangerous deception. 00:14:03.71\00:14:06.11 Let us all examine ourselves. Amen. 00:14:06.14\00:14:09.34 Take heed lest we think we stand we fall. 00:14:09.38\00:14:12.25 That's right. Amen. 00:14:12.28\00:14:13.62 Thank you so much. Beautiful lesson. 00:14:13.65\00:14:15.75 I'm Ryan Day, 00:14:15.78\00:14:17.12 and I have Monday's lesson entitled The Heaven of Heavens. 00:14:17.15\00:14:21.22 And we're going to be looking at a couple of verses. 00:14:21.26\00:14:22.96 This is based upon 00:14:22.99\00:14:24.39 the original sources in Deuteronomy Chapter 10. 00:14:24.43\00:14:27.06 And we're going to be reading verses 12 00:14:27.10\00:14:29.10 through 15 to start off. 00:14:29.13\00:14:30.87 But, of course, this is going to take us into a couple 00:14:30.90\00:14:32.63 of other passages 00:14:32.67\00:14:34.00 where we see this repeated not once, not twice, 00:14:34.04\00:14:36.24 but three other times in Scripture by three other 00:14:36.27\00:14:38.87 different Bible writers. 00:14:38.91\00:14:40.24 So obviously, we find its source here in Deuteronomy, 00:14:40.28\00:14:43.14 but you're going to see the Psalmists writes about it, 00:14:43.18\00:14:46.18 Nehemiah writes about it, and obviously, 00:14:46.21\00:14:48.82 Solomon is quoting this as well in his prayer in 1 Kings. 00:14:48.85\00:14:52.05 We'll get to that in a moment. 00:14:52.09\00:14:53.42 Let's go to Deuteronomy Chapter 10. 00:14:53.46\00:14:54.82 We're going to read verses 12 through 15. 00:14:54.86\00:14:56.49 This is what the Bible has to say. 00:14:56.52\00:14:59.36 It says, "Israel, 00:14:59.39\00:15:00.73 what does the Lord your God require of you, 00:15:00.76\00:15:03.26 but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, 00:15:03.30\00:15:06.60 and to love Him, 00:15:06.63\00:15:07.97 to serve the Lord your God with all your heart, 00:15:08.00\00:15:10.37 and with all your soul, 00:15:10.41\00:15:12.17 and to keep the commandments of the Lord 00:15:12.21\00:15:14.08 and His statutes 00:15:14.11\00:15:15.44 which I command you today for your good." 00:15:15.48\00:15:19.01 Indeed, this is verses 14, 00:15:19.05\00:15:20.95 "Indeed heaven and the highest heavens 00:15:20.98\00:15:23.99 belong to the Lord your God, 00:15:24.02\00:15:26.09 also the earth with all that is in it. 00:15:26.12\00:15:29.62 The Lord delighted only in your father's, 00:15:29.66\00:15:32.53 to love them, and He chose their descendants after them, 00:15:32.56\00:15:36.10 you above all peoples, as it is this day." 00:15:36.13\00:15:40.34 I love that. Yeah. 00:15:40.37\00:15:41.70 Indeed, Heaven and the Highest of Heavens, 00:15:41.74\00:15:45.44 of course, the lesson brings out that you know, 00:15:45.47\00:15:47.44 this, you know, we're not quite sure 00:15:47.48\00:15:49.04 what this heaven of the highest heavens 00:15:49.08\00:15:50.75 or heaven of heavens means. 00:15:50.78\00:15:52.11 It's not absolutely clear, 00:15:52.15\00:15:53.98 and at least in this immediate context 00:15:54.02\00:15:55.52 of which we're reading it, 00:15:55.55\00:15:56.89 but Moses is pointing to the majesty, 00:15:56.92\00:15:59.32 or seems to be very clearly pointing to the majesty, 00:15:59.35\00:16:01.42 the power, the grandeur of God and who He is. 00:16:01.46\00:16:04.69 Obviously, this is not only, you know, heaven itself, 00:16:04.73\00:16:08.00 but the heaven of the heavens. 00:16:08.03\00:16:09.46 So when I read this, when I first read this, 00:16:09.50\00:16:11.23 I thought of, you know, heaven of heavens, 00:16:11.27\00:16:13.10 I'm thinking of God's kingdom, you know, 00:16:13.13\00:16:14.47 where the heavenly sanctuary is, 00:16:14.50\00:16:16.04 where God's very presence is, 00:16:16.07\00:16:17.41 where you find the Father seated on His throne, 00:16:17.44\00:16:19.44 and Jesus there as well, you know, 00:16:19.47\00:16:21.54 doing the work of our High Priest. 00:16:21.58\00:16:23.55 But obviously, the lesson brings out 00:16:23.58\00:16:25.15 that it's most likely an idiomatic expression 00:16:25.18\00:16:27.22 that points to God's complete sovereignty 00:16:27.25\00:16:29.78 over all of the creation, the heaven of heavens, 00:16:29.82\00:16:34.16 God is, in course, the leader, the ruler of all the heavens 00:16:34.19\00:16:38.09 and the earth, and even the heaven of heavens. 00:16:38.13\00:16:40.53 And so what a beautiful way to express that. 00:16:40.56\00:16:42.73 We find this mentioned in three other places of Scripture. 00:16:42.76\00:16:46.67 Let's go to 1 Kings Chapter 8. 00:16:46.70\00:16:48.47 And, of course, 1 Kings Chapter 8, this is Solomon. 00:16:48.50\00:16:50.64 He's in prayer, and he's praying to the Lord. 00:16:50.67\00:16:53.68 And notice what he says here in verse 27. 00:16:53.71\00:16:56.01 1 Kings 8:27, 00:16:56.04\00:16:58.18 this is the next mentioning of this. 00:16:58.21\00:17:00.52 It says, "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? 00:17:00.55\00:17:04.89 Behold," here it is, 00:17:04.92\00:17:06.25 "heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain you. 00:17:06.29\00:17:10.56 How much less this temple which I have built." 00:17:10.59\00:17:13.70 I love that. 00:17:13.73\00:17:15.06 He's acknowledging the fact of God's majesty, 00:17:15.10\00:17:17.43 God's grandeur, God's, you know, 00:17:17.47\00:17:20.44 complete power over all, and everyone, 00:17:20.47\00:17:23.41 the fact that he's built this temple, 00:17:23.44\00:17:25.17 and of course, biblically speaking, 00:17:25.21\00:17:27.08 historically speaking, Solomon's temple historically 00:17:27.11\00:17:30.11 is known as the greatest of all the temples 00:17:30.15\00:17:32.21 that was ever built. 00:17:32.25\00:17:33.58 And even Solomon who was the head 00:17:33.62\00:17:34.95 of building that building project, 00:17:34.98\00:17:36.92 he looks at it and he says, "Lord, 00:17:36.95\00:17:38.55 not even this great temple, 00:17:38.59\00:17:40.06 which I built can contain you because you are the God 00:17:40.09\00:17:42.96 of the heaven of all the heavens," right? 00:17:42.99\00:17:45.36 We also see this mentioned again in Nehemiah 9:6. 00:17:45.39\00:17:49.96 Nehemiah, again, is calling out to the Lord. 00:17:50.00\00:17:52.47 So Nehemiah 9:6 says, "You alone are the Lord. 00:17:52.50\00:17:56.40 You have made heaven," and here it is, 00:17:56.44\00:17:57.97 "the heaven of heavens, with all their hosts, 00:17:58.01\00:18:01.38 the earth and everything on it, the sea, 00:18:01.41\00:18:03.95 and all that is in them, and you preserve them all, 00:18:03.98\00:18:07.58 the host of heaven worships you." 00:18:07.62\00:18:09.68 So also pointing back to this reverential awe of God 00:18:09.72\00:18:13.86 as creator of the universe, creator of the cosmos, 00:18:13.89\00:18:17.46 even the heaven of heavens, as Nehemiah 9:6 says. 00:18:17.49\00:18:21.20 And then, of course, the Psalmist writes this 00:18:21.23\00:18:22.83 as well in Psalm 148:4, 00:18:22.86\00:18:25.43 if we go there, we'll see it again, very quick, 00:18:25.47\00:18:27.74 very simple, very short, but he says, "Praise Him." 00:18:27.77\00:18:30.77 I love that. 00:18:30.81\00:18:32.14 "Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, 00:18:32.17\00:18:35.88 and you waters above the heavens." 00:18:35.91\00:18:38.08 I love that, praise Him, you heavens of heavens 00:18:38.11\00:18:40.38 and water above the heavens. 00:18:40.42\00:18:41.78 So it's again acknowledging God 00:18:41.82\00:18:43.45 as the sovereign God that He is. 00:18:43.49\00:18:46.32 So this is, again, this lesson brings out 00:18:46.35\00:18:48.49 a very interesting expression 00:18:48.52\00:18:49.89 to communicate God's sovereignty, His glory, 00:18:49.92\00:18:53.50 who He is as creator of the universe, 00:18:53.53\00:18:55.56 but in the time remaining that I have, 00:18:55.60\00:18:57.03 because as I was going through, 00:18:57.07\00:18:58.40 oftentimes, we're preparing these Sabbath School lessons, 00:18:58.43\00:19:00.24 I'm just going to be candid with our viewers, 00:19:00.27\00:19:02.20 you know, oftentimes, you know, 00:19:02.24\00:19:03.57 when they're writing these lessons, 00:19:03.61\00:19:05.51 they make, they put maybe a scripture or two in there, 00:19:05.54\00:19:08.01 they make their quick point, 00:19:08.04\00:19:09.38 and then they move on to the next lesson. 00:19:09.41\00:19:10.75 There's no any way you can get 10 minutes 00:19:10.78\00:19:12.18 of content out of that. 00:19:12.21\00:19:13.55 So as I'm working through this, and I saw, 00:19:13.58\00:19:15.05 I could probably get about five minutes of content out of this, 00:19:15.08\00:19:17.89 what am I going to do with the remaining 00:19:17.92\00:19:19.25 five minutes of my time? 00:19:19.29\00:19:20.62 Well, you know what? I have to ask an important question. 00:19:20.66\00:19:23.12 We can talk about the heaven of heavens all day long, 00:19:23.16\00:19:25.76 and we know that God is indeed the ruler, 00:19:25.79\00:19:27.73 the sovereign ruler of all the cosmos, 00:19:27.76\00:19:29.53 even the heaven of heavens, but how can we make sure 00:19:29.56\00:19:32.27 that we will be with our Savior in that heaven of heavens? 00:19:32.30\00:19:35.54 That's what I want to ask, because actually, 00:19:35.57\00:19:37.71 it's implied in the verses we read at the very beginning. 00:19:37.74\00:19:40.64 Let's go back to Deuteronomy Chapter 10. 00:19:40.68\00:19:43.24 And I have to just, the reason why this was put in here, 00:19:43.28\00:19:45.85 and I believe it's worth mentioning that before Moses 00:19:45.88\00:19:50.52 writes about this again, 00:19:50.55\00:19:52.05 the heaven of the highest heavens belong 00:19:52.09\00:19:53.82 to the Lord your God. 00:19:53.86\00:19:55.19 In verses 12 and 13, 00:19:55.22\00:19:56.62 he sets the groundwork for how what is required of us 00:19:56.66\00:19:59.53 to be able inherent that. 00:19:59.56\00:20:00.93 And so notice verse 12, again, "And now, Israel, 00:20:00.96\00:20:02.80 what does the Lord God require of you, 00:20:02.83\00:20:04.97 but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways 00:20:05.00\00:20:07.27 and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God 00:20:07.30\00:20:09.10 with all your heart and with all your soul, 00:20:09.14\00:20:11.17 and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes 00:20:11.21\00:20:13.64 which I command you today for your good?" 00:20:13.68\00:20:16.75 Now I want to go back here and I just want to add, 00:20:16.78\00:20:18.51 the two things that I pull from that 00:20:18.55\00:20:20.02 is just simply from those texts, 00:20:20.05\00:20:21.72 I'm not going to go there's a whole lot more 00:20:21.75\00:20:23.22 complexity we could web out from this. 00:20:23.25\00:20:25.32 But I'm just going to stick to those two main principles 00:20:25.35\00:20:27.52 that I find in those texts there. 00:20:27.56\00:20:29.39 In other words, the Lord is saying, 00:20:29.42\00:20:30.76 I need you to respect Me, I need you to fear Me. 00:20:30.79\00:20:33.26 Fear the Lord your God, Deuteronomy 10:12, 00:20:33.29\00:20:35.56 we just read it. 00:20:35.60\00:20:36.93 And now Israel, 00:20:36.97\00:20:38.30 what does the Lord God require of you, 00:20:38.33\00:20:39.67 but you fear the Lord your God. 00:20:39.70\00:20:41.10 That doesn't mean, 00:20:41.14\00:20:42.47 you know, we need to be tucking our tails 00:20:42.50\00:20:43.84 running in the opposite direction 00:20:43.87\00:20:45.24 and shaking in our boots because we're so terrified 00:20:45.27\00:20:48.21 of our Creator. 00:20:48.24\00:20:49.58 No, it's not that kind of fear, 00:20:49.61\00:20:50.95 because God is not pushing us away. 00:20:50.98\00:20:52.88 He's not running us away in fear. 00:20:52.91\00:20:54.42 He's drawing us to Him. 00:20:54.45\00:20:56.35 We should fear Him in the sense that we should respect Him. 00:20:56.38\00:20:58.92 Shelley did an entire section on this in a few weeks past. 00:20:58.95\00:21:02.16 Go back and watch that again 00:21:02.19\00:21:03.53 where it talks about fearing God, 00:21:03.56\00:21:04.93 a reverential, awe, respect, an honor, 00:21:04.96\00:21:07.93 an homage given to God that nobody else deserve 00:21:07.96\00:21:10.67 because only He truly deserves it. 00:21:10.70\00:21:12.73 Amen. 00:21:12.77\00:21:14.10 Proverbs 9:10, 00:21:14.14\00:21:15.47 I'm going to go faster through these, 00:21:15.50\00:21:16.84 so there's no way you're going to be able 00:21:16.87\00:21:18.21 to follow along with me. 00:21:18.24\00:21:19.57 I'm going to hit it quickly because I have two 00:21:19.61\00:21:20.94 and a half minutes. 00:21:20.98\00:21:22.31 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom 00:21:22.34\00:21:23.75 and the knowledge of the Holy One 00:21:23.78\00:21:25.11 is understanding, Ecclesiastes 12:13, 00:21:25.15\00:21:28.55 that really could sum, 00:21:28.58\00:21:29.92 really that, both of those texts 00:21:29.95\00:21:31.29 that we just read in Deuteronomy 10:12-13. 00:21:31.32\00:21:33.79 Ecclesiastes 12 brings both of those together in one text. 00:21:33.82\00:21:36.99 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter, 00:21:37.03\00:21:39.89 fear God and keep His commandments 00:21:39.93\00:21:41.96 for this is man's all. 00:21:42.00\00:21:43.33 That's the New King James outline. 00:21:43.37\00:21:44.70 I just love the King James, though. 00:21:44.73\00:21:46.47 For this is the whole duty of man. 00:21:46.50\00:21:50.07 I love it, fear God, 00:21:50.11\00:21:51.44 and keep His commandments for this is the whole duty 00:21:51.47\00:21:54.61 of man. 00:21:54.64\00:21:55.98 Wisest man in the Bible penned those words. 00:21:56.01\00:21:57.35 And I'll tell you right now, my friends, 00:21:57.38\00:21:59.11 he knew a little bit of something about 00:21:59.15\00:22:00.88 what it means to be prepared and to prepare you, 00:22:00.92\00:22:03.08 if he juiced, I believe he juiced all 00:22:03.12\00:22:05.15 of his wisdom down in that one text. 00:22:05.19\00:22:07.02 This is all of man's all right here, this is, 00:22:07.06\00:22:09.89 the whole duty of man is to fear God 00:22:09.92\00:22:12.19 and to keep His commandments. 00:22:12.23\00:22:13.56 Psalm 33:8, 00:22:13.60\00:22:15.10 "Let all the earth fear the Lord, 00:22:15.13\00:22:16.63 let all the inhabitants of the world 00:22:16.67\00:22:18.87 stand in awe of Him. 00:22:18.90\00:22:21.67 Shouldn't we, when we stand in God's presence, 00:22:21.70\00:22:24.04 I don't believe we're just going to be, 00:22:24.07\00:22:25.41 you know, flailing around as if we're just, 00:22:25.44\00:22:26.78 you know, I believe we're going to be standing, 00:22:26.81\00:22:28.14 when I first see Jesus, I don't really know 00:22:28.18\00:22:29.68 how I'm going to act. 00:22:29.71\00:22:31.05 But I can imagine I'm just going to stand in awe like, 00:22:31.08\00:22:33.35 "Oh, well, it's Jesus, 00:22:33.38\00:22:35.72 the Creator, the God of the universe. 00:22:35.75\00:22:39.22 He's really here standing before me." 00:22:39.25\00:22:41.12 I can't wait for that day, right? 00:22:41.16\00:22:42.49 Amen. Amen. 00:22:42.52\00:22:43.86 First angel's message, Revelation 14:7, 00:22:43.89\00:22:46.93 "Fear God and give glory to Him, 00:22:46.96\00:22:48.46 for the hour of His judgment has come and worship Him 00:22:48.50\00:22:51.37 who made the heaven and the earth, and the sea, 00:22:51.40\00:22:53.13 and the springs of waters." 00:22:53.17\00:22:54.94 Why is He Creator? 00:22:54.97\00:22:56.37 He deserves worship, because He is Creator. 00:22:56.40\00:22:59.34 Revelation 4:11, hey, the 24 elders get it. 00:22:59.37\00:23:02.14 They got it. 00:23:02.18\00:23:03.51 And Revelation 4:11, it says, "You are worthy, 00:23:03.55\00:23:05.08 oh, God, to receive glory and honor and power, 00:23:05.11\00:23:07.78 for You created all things, and by Your will they were, 00:23:07.82\00:23:10.92 they exist and were created." 00:23:10.95\00:23:13.46 My friends, we have to fear the Lord. 00:23:13.49\00:23:14.82 And, of course, we know this as well, 00:23:14.86\00:23:16.36 as a second component to that we need to obey Him, 00:23:16.39\00:23:18.69 because we respect Him, because we honor Him, 00:23:18.73\00:23:21.10 because we give Him that reverential awe 00:23:21.13\00:23:23.10 that He deserves, the fear of the Lord, 00:23:23.13\00:23:25.03 we want to obey Him that should be the response of that. 00:23:25.07\00:23:27.77 Deuteronomy 10:12-13. 00:23:27.80\00:23:29.34 We just read it earlier, "To walk in the ways 00:23:29.37\00:23:31.61 and to love Him." 00:23:31.64\00:23:32.97 Notice we obey Him, why? 00:23:33.01\00:23:34.41 Because we love Him. Amen. 00:23:34.44\00:23:35.81 Because we love Him, because He first loved us, right? 00:23:35.84\00:23:38.41 To serve the Lord your God with all your heart, 00:23:38.45\00:23:40.38 with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord. 00:23:40.42\00:23:43.59 That's what it says. 00:23:43.62\00:23:44.95 And again, I can, there's a whole lot 00:23:44.99\00:23:46.32 more scripture, but I got to go back to Ecclesiastes 12:13. 00:23:46.35\00:23:49.69 Because not only does it say to fear the Lord, notice, 00:23:49.72\00:23:52.23 let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter, 00:23:52.26\00:23:53.70 fear God and keep His commandments, 00:23:53.73\00:23:56.67 for this is the whole duty of man. 00:23:56.70\00:23:59.17 My friends, if we're going to be in the heaven 00:23:59.20\00:24:01.67 of heavens with our Creator, may we learn to fear God, 00:24:01.70\00:24:04.91 keep His commandments and serve Him. 00:24:04.94\00:24:06.98 We serve the God of the universe. 00:24:07.01\00:24:08.34 He's not just any mealy-nealy, little God, 00:24:08.38\00:24:10.18 like all of these other false pagan gods of the world. 00:24:10.21\00:24:13.01 Yes. 00:24:13.05\00:24:14.38 He is the God of the universe, and He deserves our awe. 00:24:14.42\00:24:18.12 Amen. It gets better every time we read it. 00:25:54.82\00:25:57.35 It says, "And you will seek Me and find Me 00:25:57.39\00:25:59.92 when you search for Me with," what? 00:25:59.95\00:26:01.79 Oh, I like that, "With all your heart." 00:26:01.82\00:26:04.53 Years later, however, studying his Bible, 00:26:04.56\00:26:06.59 he found the verse again. 00:26:06.63\00:26:08.60 But way back in the Book of Deuteronomy, 00:26:08.63\00:26:11.73 that is, Jeremiah got it from Moses. 00:26:11.77\00:26:15.90 I mean, that to me, that's just powerful when you look at it. 00:26:15.94\00:26:18.27 And then our lesson guide, you know, our study says, 00:26:18.31\00:26:20.38 go back to Deuteronomy 4. 00:26:20.41\00:26:22.21 Well, bless our hearts. 00:26:22.24\00:26:23.58 We've been there a lot of times, but you know, 00:26:23.61\00:26:24.95 is maybe the first time that you've joined us, 00:26:24.98\00:26:26.31 and so you don't know about it. 00:26:26.35\00:26:27.85 And so I think it's good we go back to Deuteronomy 4, 00:26:27.88\00:26:31.62 sorry, and then read verses 23 through 29. 00:26:31.65\00:26:34.72 We could probably go over 00:26:34.76\00:26:36.89 and just hit some high points on it, 00:26:36.93\00:26:38.33 but somebody might miss them. 00:26:38.36\00:26:39.69 I'm always afraid somebody is going, misses it, 00:26:39.73\00:26:42.16 but somebody is going to miss something here 00:26:42.20\00:26:43.73 if we don't read it. 00:26:43.77\00:26:45.10 So I just pray by the grace 00:26:45.13\00:26:47.44 of God that we'll have our ears open and listen to this. 00:26:47.47\00:26:50.37 I'll start with verse 23, shall we? 00:26:50.41\00:26:52.47 Go through verse 29. 00:26:52.51\00:26:55.54 It says here, "Take heed unto yourselves, 00:26:55.58\00:26:57.88 lest ye forget the covenant of the Lord your God, 00:26:57.91\00:27:00.68 which he made with you, and made you a graven image, 00:27:00.72\00:27:03.25 or the likeness of anything, 00:27:03.28\00:27:04.85 which the Lord thy God hath forbidden thee. 00:27:04.89\00:27:07.72 For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even," what? 00:27:07.76\00:27:11.56 It says, "Even a jealous God. 00:27:11.59\00:27:13.83 And when thou shalt beget children, 00:27:13.86\00:27:15.43 and children's children, ye shall have," notice this, 00:27:15.46\00:27:18.37 may remembered, "remained long in the land, 00:27:18.40\00:27:21.40 and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, 00:27:21.44\00:27:24.37 or the likeness of anything, 00:27:24.41\00:27:25.74 and shall do evil in the sight of the Lord thy God, 00:27:25.77\00:27:27.78 to provoke him to anger: 00:27:27.81\00:27:29.64 I call heaven and earth 00:27:29.68\00:27:31.01 to witness against you this day, 00:27:31.05\00:27:32.95 that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land 00:27:32.98\00:27:36.38 whereunto you go for over Jordan to possess it, 00:27:36.42\00:27:39.69 ye shall not prolong your days upon it, 00:27:39.72\00:27:41.82 but shall utterly be destroyed." 00:27:41.86\00:27:44.13 Verse 27, "And the Lord shall scatter you among the nations, 00:27:44.16\00:27:47.70 and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, 00:27:47.73\00:27:50.77 whither the Lord shall," notice, "lead you." 00:27:50.80\00:27:53.64 Verse 28, "And there ye shall serve gods, 00:27:53.67\00:27:56.64 the work of men's hands, wood and stone, 00:27:56.67\00:27:59.04 which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell." 00:27:59.07\00:28:01.54 Verse 29, 00:28:01.58\00:28:02.91 "But if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, 00:28:02.94\00:28:06.88 thou shalt find him, 00:28:06.92\00:28:08.82 if you seek with him with all your heart, 00:28:08.85\00:28:10.69 and with all your soul." 00:28:10.72\00:28:12.05 After I read these verses, 00:28:12.09\00:28:13.96 and I read them this morning, again, 00:28:13.99\00:28:15.49 we've read them several different times, 00:28:15.52\00:28:16.86 it really touched my heart afresh. 00:28:16.89\00:28:19.43 You know, that's the way it should be. 00:28:19.46\00:28:20.80 It was, it's fresh every morning 00:28:20.83\00:28:22.16 if we really get into it. 00:28:22.20\00:28:23.53 And I was reading this, especially verses 28 and 29, 00:28:23.57\00:28:28.37 that God is saying, "I know what you're going to do. 00:28:28.40\00:28:31.67 I know what you're going to do in advance." 00:28:31.71\00:28:33.94 And He said, "How could this," 00:28:33.98\00:28:36.14 I'm trying to put my mind like, 00:28:36.18\00:28:38.01 above what I'm thinking that God love a universe. 00:28:38.05\00:28:42.15 Yeah. 00:28:42.18\00:28:43.52 He looks down, and He says, 00:28:43.55\00:28:44.89 "You're going to be worshiping these things of wood, 00:28:44.92\00:28:48.09 things that men make with their hands that they can't see, 00:28:48.12\00:28:50.59 they can't eat, they can't hear, 00:28:50.63\00:28:51.96 they can't do anything for you. 00:28:51.99\00:28:54.03 There's nothing, they can't eat, 00:28:54.06\00:28:55.56 they can't smell, they can't do anything." 00:28:55.60\00:28:58.47 And basically, He's telling He could do everything for us, 00:28:58.50\00:29:01.57 and yet we exchange these things that can't smell, 00:29:01.60\00:29:04.64 that can't do, that can't work any miracle, 00:29:04.67\00:29:06.61 we exchange them for the God of the universe. 00:29:06.64\00:29:09.74 And then He says, "Kenny, 00:29:09.78\00:29:12.08 when you get done playing with those little wooden gods, 00:29:12.11\00:29:17.25 those little strange gods that can't do you 00:29:17.29\00:29:19.95 any good at all, when you get tired of that, 00:29:19.99\00:29:23.83 when you're ready to give it up." 00:29:23.86\00:29:26.53 He said, oh, verse 29, He said, 00:29:26.56\00:29:29.16 "And then if you seek me, call." 00:29:29.20\00:29:32.93 Before you call, I like that before you call, right? 00:29:32.97\00:29:34.87 Yes. Amen. 00:29:34.90\00:29:36.24 When you call, He said, 00:29:36.27\00:29:37.61 "I'm going to be there for you." 00:29:37.64\00:29:38.97 Yes. Wow. 00:29:39.01\00:29:40.34 Just kind of mentioned in our thought as humans. 00:29:40.38\00:29:43.01 I tell most people, "No, I won't be there for you 00:29:43.04\00:29:45.01 because of what you've done. 00:29:45.05\00:29:46.82 That's not the godly way to handle it." 00:29:46.85\00:29:49.55 We're given an example here. 00:29:49.58\00:29:52.29 If you call, so pause it, 00:29:52.32\00:29:53.66 if you call you're going to find me. 00:29:53.69\00:29:55.42 Please get that, if we get nothing else out of this, 00:29:55.46\00:29:57.93 these the less than the whole quarter, 00:29:57.96\00:30:00.00 if we've strayed, if we've got other gods before Him, 00:30:00.03\00:30:02.43 and we decide to put them away and God, 00:30:02.46\00:30:04.67 can you come back in my life? 00:30:04.70\00:30:06.03 Oh, I definitely will. 00:30:06.07\00:30:08.17 You seek me, you'll find me, 00:30:08.20\00:30:10.27 but you've got to do with all your heart, 00:30:10.31\00:30:11.91 Kenny, because part of that heart 00:30:11.94\00:30:13.27 and that mind has been contaminated by the junk 00:30:13.31\00:30:16.08 that you've been taking in by some 00:30:16.11\00:30:17.45 of these other things. 00:30:17.48\00:30:19.01 So there's needs to be a cleansing, 00:30:19.05\00:30:20.68 need to put the Word of God in heart that I might not sin 00:30:20.72\00:30:23.18 against Him. 00:30:23.22\00:30:24.55 And so, you know, I read then I thought, 00:30:24.59\00:30:26.35 "Man, that's just so good that He's going 00:30:26.39\00:30:28.26 to always be there for you 00:30:28.29\00:30:30.13 if you call and you seek Him with all your heart." 00:30:30.16\00:30:32.86 I think some time with my mind, 00:30:32.89\00:30:35.03 you may think everybody's mind is different. 00:30:35.06\00:30:38.00 That sometimes we say, "Boy, I just don't know, 00:30:38.03\00:30:41.90 I forget things too easy." 00:30:41.94\00:30:43.34 We say sometime we forget. 00:30:43.37\00:30:45.07 And you know what our lesson brings this out 00:30:45.11\00:30:46.84 if we had time to go into a lot more into this here, 00:30:46.88\00:30:50.45 that if you talk about a memory problem, 00:30:50.48\00:30:52.75 we're talking about a bad memory, 00:30:52.78\00:30:54.68 I've noticed for bad memory, if someone says to me 00:30:54.72\00:30:58.75 and pulls me aside, four things we can go into 00:30:58.79\00:31:01.02 and think we have time to do it. 00:31:01.06\00:31:02.39 But if somebody pulls you aside and says, 00:31:02.42\00:31:05.53 "I'm going to tell you something, 00:31:05.56\00:31:06.90 I don't tell anybody." 00:31:06.93\00:31:09.06 All of sudden my memory becomes real good. 00:31:09.10\00:31:12.90 I think about it. 00:31:12.93\00:31:14.57 When I was younger and growing up 00:31:14.60\00:31:17.37 and somebody would say something, something dirty. 00:31:17.41\00:31:20.74 Right. 00:31:20.78\00:31:22.11 Something that wasn't right. That's true. 00:31:22.14\00:31:23.48 That's true Why? This world did it, just stay in there. 00:31:23.51\00:31:26.08 Right. 00:31:26.11\00:31:27.45 You know, 40, 50 years later, I still remember I know, 00:31:27.48\00:31:30.69 we're supposed to cleanse it all out, but I'm saying, 00:31:30.72\00:31:32.85 why a bad memory turns into, 00:31:32.89\00:31:37.33 we can remember these things. 00:31:37.36\00:31:39.33 He's telling us here 00:31:39.36\00:31:40.70 we need to be concerned about getting those things out 00:31:40.73\00:31:43.13 to watch for those things that come our way 00:31:43.16\00:31:46.63 that take our mind off of Christ. 00:31:46.67\00:31:49.44 You know, whatever it might be, put it aside. 00:31:49.47\00:31:51.17 And when somebody comes to say, 00:31:51.21\00:31:52.77 "I've heard, did you hear?" 00:31:52.81\00:31:55.48 You ought to say, "Get behind me, Satan. 00:31:55.51\00:31:56.85 I don't want to hear that." Ain't that right? 00:31:56.88\00:31:58.55 And some people will say, "Well, you know, 00:31:58.58\00:32:00.52 let's use some caution here, 00:32:00.55\00:32:02.28 when it's opened needs to be dealt with." 00:32:02.32\00:32:04.32 The enemy could be speaking, 00:32:04.35\00:32:06.42 you know, we have a work to do for God. 00:32:06.45\00:32:08.02 Make sure and watch, you know, let's be careful. 00:32:08.06\00:32:10.56 People have you to watch things you shouldn't be watching 00:32:10.59\00:32:12.93 and doing what you shouldn't be. 00:32:12.96\00:32:14.30 And those are the things you just, 00:32:14.33\00:32:16.26 the enemy just tries to keep them in your mind. 00:32:16.30\00:32:18.70 Moses said to the people just turn it, flip it over. 00:32:18.73\00:32:22.10 He said, "Let's examine the greatness of God, 00:32:22.14\00:32:24.74 let's examine the goodness of God. 00:32:24.77\00:32:27.38 These things will help us to reevaluate." 00:32:27.41\00:32:31.25 And now we've kind of discussed that a little bit 00:32:31.28\00:32:33.01 about evaluate or reevaluate ourselves in our relationship 00:32:33.05\00:32:37.15 with Christ. 00:32:37.19\00:32:38.85 Reevaluate His greatness, His goodness, 00:32:38.89\00:32:41.06 His longsuffering, His glory, and His willingness to forgive. 00:32:41.09\00:32:44.56 And when I seek Him with all my heart, 00:32:44.59\00:32:46.16 soul and mind, He will be found, 00:32:46.19\00:32:48.06 we can find Him. 00:32:48.10\00:32:49.43 Yes. You know, we're dealing with... 00:32:49.46\00:32:50.80 Yeah, we're dealing with the only true God. 00:32:50.83\00:32:53.27 I think you brought that out beautifully a while ago. 00:32:53.30\00:32:54.97 A living God, an infinite God, an eternal God, 00:32:55.00\00:32:58.27 a God that's there, 00:32:58.31\00:32:59.64 and why would we want to trade Him for some little... 00:32:59.67\00:33:01.88 Well, would carve things, 00:33:01.91\00:33:04.25 right little idols in which we do. 00:33:04.28\00:33:05.68 All powerful, yet if we reach out, 00:33:05.71\00:33:08.88 this just simply says here, we call upon Him, He says, 00:33:08.92\00:33:11.29 "I'm going to be there." 00:33:11.32\00:33:12.65 Amen. 00:33:12.69\00:33:14.02 And He reminds the children of Israel over 00:33:14.06\00:33:15.72 and over and over, "Let's be careful, 00:33:15.76\00:33:17.13 we don't offend God, He's a consuming fire. 00:33:17.16\00:33:20.83 He's a jealous God. 00:33:20.86\00:33:23.03 "And I read that as a child younger and I still, 00:33:23.06\00:33:25.60 you know, somebody saying I look at, 00:33:25.63\00:33:27.40 it's not the kind of jealousy that we think about. 00:33:27.44\00:33:29.20 When we say jealous here in human, 00:33:29.24\00:33:31.77 we're envious of somebody else, 00:33:31.81\00:33:33.14 we could do blah-blah, you know, 00:33:33.17\00:33:34.98 God says I'm jealous, He wants us to come to Him. 00:33:35.01\00:33:38.48 He wants to save us in His kingdom 00:33:38.51\00:33:41.08 when He comes. 00:33:41.12\00:33:42.45 And I've often said this, 00:33:42.48\00:33:43.82 and I mean it with my whole heart, 00:33:43.85\00:33:45.19 "If I miss heaven, 00:33:45.22\00:33:46.55 number one it will be my choice. 00:33:46.59\00:33:49.02 It will be my own choice. 00:33:49.06\00:33:50.39 But if I miss heaven, 00:33:50.43\00:33:51.76 I've missed my purpose for being here." 00:33:51.79\00:33:53.50 What other purpose could there possibly be to endure 00:33:53.53\00:33:56.77 the mess that we're in and going 00:33:56.80\00:33:58.33 to endure other than prepare for heaven? 00:33:58.37\00:34:01.50 That's good. Right. 00:34:01.54\00:34:02.87 My brother said, yes, we did a little program, 00:34:02.90\00:34:04.31 he used the word, he said, 00:34:04.34\00:34:05.67 "This is what we need to do to get ready for Jesus." 00:34:05.71\00:34:07.38 And we know what he said, prepare, prepare. 00:34:07.41\00:34:10.81 And it kept coming out, prepare. 00:34:10.85\00:34:12.51 I thought, man, he's right. Yeah. 00:34:12.55\00:34:14.02 Prepare for the coming of Jesus. That's right. 00:34:14.05\00:34:16.45 And that is reevaluate ourselves 00:34:16.48\00:34:18.29 and our relationship with Him. 00:34:18.32\00:34:21.62 Hebrews 10:27, but a fearful, 00:34:21.66\00:34:23.49 now a certain fearful looking for a judgment 00:34:23.53\00:34:26.19 and fiery indignation, 00:34:26.23\00:34:28.36 which shall devour the adversaries. 00:34:28.40\00:34:31.43 Those that go against God, I like this here, 00:34:31.47\00:34:34.17 fire consumes, notice this, only that which is fuel for it. 00:34:34.20\00:34:40.18 I don't want to be fuel for that, that fire, do you? 00:34:40.21\00:34:44.75 So it behooves us to get ready for the coming of Jesus. 00:34:44.78\00:34:48.02 It behooves us to call upon Him. 00:34:48.05\00:34:50.69 It behooves us right now to get rid 00:34:50.72\00:34:52.99 of anything that would cause division 00:34:53.02\00:34:55.16 or separation right now that separate us from God. 00:34:55.19\00:34:58.43 If we ever need to be close to Him, 00:34:58.46\00:34:59.89 I really believe it's right now. 00:34:59.93\00:35:02.06 The judgments are falling in the land. 00:35:02.10\00:35:03.67 He says, "Get ready, get ready, because I'm coming back 00:35:03.70\00:35:05.87 and I just beg you, by the grace God, 00:35:05.90\00:35:07.94 get ready, He's coming back." 00:35:07.97\00:35:10.04 Amen. Thank you so much, Pastor Kenny, each one of you. 00:35:10.07\00:35:13.88 I feel like I'm having church. Glory. 00:35:13.91\00:35:15.44 Don't you feel like church? Yes. 00:35:15.48\00:35:16.81 That's right. 00:35:16.85\00:35:18.18 Opening up the Word of God, 00:35:18.21\00:35:19.55 and the Holy Spirit is convicting my heart, 00:35:19.58\00:35:21.22 I know that. 00:35:21.25\00:35:22.58 So I'm so grateful for the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. 00:35:22.62\00:35:25.75 I'm Jill Morikone, and I have Wednesday's lesson, 00:35:25.79\00:35:28.66 which is, What Does the Lord Require? 00:35:28.69\00:35:31.66 We're going to the Book of Micah. 00:35:31.69\00:35:34.13 Pastor Kenny had Jeremiah and Deuteronomy, Pastor Ryan, 00:35:34.16\00:35:38.20 Nehemiah and Deuteronomy, 00:35:38.23\00:35:40.20 and I have Micah and Deuteronomy. 00:35:40.24\00:35:43.41 You know, Deuteronomy if we look at it 00:35:43.44\00:35:45.01 as you're turning to Micah, 'cause Micah 00:35:45.04\00:35:46.51 is a hard book to find as you're turning them. 00:35:46.54\00:35:49.61 Deuteronomy is the reaffirmation, 00:35:49.64\00:35:51.65 you could say, of the covenant. 00:35:51.68\00:35:53.05 The people are standing on the borders 00:35:53.08\00:35:54.98 of the Promised Land, and God reaffirms His end 00:35:55.02\00:35:58.92 of the covenant with the people. 00:35:58.95\00:36:00.76 And the people are clearly reminded, 00:36:00.79\00:36:02.99 they need to keep their end, their portion of the covenant. 00:36:03.02\00:36:08.20 When we get to the Book of Micah, 00:36:08.23\00:36:09.60 of course, he's a prophet to Judah, 00:36:09.63\00:36:11.17 and he prophesied under Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. 00:36:11.20\00:36:14.47 The message of the book is that God hates 00:36:14.50\00:36:17.64 and condemn sin, whether it's religious, 00:36:17.67\00:36:20.78 economic, social, and how we treat other people. 00:36:20.81\00:36:25.11 And because of that sin, judgment is coming. 00:36:25.15\00:36:29.58 And yet, in this book, 00:36:29.62\00:36:31.55 we see that God still is merciful. 00:36:31.59\00:36:34.62 God still is longsuffering. Yes, He is. 00:36:34.66\00:36:38.13 God still is extending hope to the people of Judah, 00:36:38.16\00:36:42.26 and by extension to you and I today. 00:36:42.30\00:36:44.77 So we're in Micah 6, 00:36:44.80\00:36:46.13 we're going to read the first eight verses of Micah 6:1-8. 00:36:46.17\00:36:51.24 This is, we talked about this a couple lessons ago. 00:36:51.27\00:36:55.24 This is a reeb, Pastor Kenny, it's a Hebrew word, 00:36:55.28\00:36:59.25 but it means a covenant lawsuit. 00:36:59.28\00:37:01.38 This is God's covenant lawsuit against the people of Judah. 00:37:01.42\00:37:07.02 God's taking legal action, 00:37:07.06\00:37:09.76 because they failed to keep their end of the covenant. 00:37:09.79\00:37:13.53 Our lesson talks about it being reeb, 00:37:13.56\00:37:15.16 but also if you study Deuteronomy 26, 00:37:15.20\00:37:17.93 we see a reeb there, Deuteronomy 4, 00:37:17.97\00:37:19.90 I'm sorry, 4:26, God calls heaven and earth 00:37:19.93\00:37:23.91 as witnesses against the people. 00:37:23.94\00:37:26.64 If you read Isaiah Chapter 1, we find another reeb, 00:37:26.68\00:37:31.31 another covenant lawsuit. 00:37:31.35\00:37:33.48 In that case, God calls heaven and earth to listen. 00:37:33.52\00:37:37.95 If you read Acts Chapter 7, we find another reeb. 00:37:37.99\00:37:41.79 This is Stephen, of course, he recounts the history 00:37:41.82\00:37:45.46 of the children of Israel, and then what does he say, 00:37:45.49\00:37:47.86 "You stiff necked people." 00:37:47.90\00:37:50.00 And here comes the judgment 00:37:50.03\00:37:52.70 against the nation of Israel. 00:37:52.73\00:37:56.04 So in this case, in Micah Chapter 6, 00:37:56.07\00:37:58.44 it's not heaven and earth called as witnesses, 00:37:58.47\00:38:01.14 it's the mountains and the hills 00:38:01.18\00:38:03.61 called as witnesses. 00:38:03.65\00:38:06.55 So let's look at it, we'll look at the reeb, 00:38:06.58\00:38:08.15 this is the first couple of verses, 00:38:08.18\00:38:09.95 then we look at the appeal, and finally we get the answer. 00:38:09.98\00:38:13.86 So let's look at the reeb, this is verses 1 and 2. 00:38:13.89\00:38:16.26 Here, now what the Lord says, 00:38:16.29\00:38:19.09 "Arise, plead your case before the mountains, 00:38:19.13\00:38:22.80 and let the hills hear your voice. 00:38:22.83\00:38:25.87 Hear, O you mountains, the Lord's complaint." 00:38:25.90\00:38:28.90 That word in Hebrew is reeb, the Lord's complaint. 00:38:28.94\00:38:32.74 And you foundations of the earth, 00:38:32.77\00:38:34.74 for the Lord has a complaint," there's reeb again, 00:38:34.78\00:38:37.38 "against His people, 00:38:37.41\00:38:40.45 and He will contend with Israel." 00:38:40.48\00:38:42.12 Now the name Israel, one of its meanings is what? 00:38:42.15\00:38:44.99 One who contends with God. 00:38:45.02\00:38:47.26 But in this case, 00:38:47.29\00:38:48.62 they're not contending with God, 00:38:48.66\00:38:50.39 God is contending with them. 00:38:50.43\00:38:53.16 Good. All right. 00:38:53.19\00:38:54.63 This time of the children of Judah was a time 00:38:54.66\00:38:57.23 of upheaval and crisis. 00:38:57.27\00:38:58.77 If you look at Ahaz's leadership, 00:38:58.80\00:39:01.40 it's probably one of the most evil kings of Judah, 00:39:01.44\00:39:03.87 He sacrificed His own children in the fire, 00:39:03.91\00:39:07.84 and he placed idol worship within the precincts 00:39:07.88\00:39:11.48 of the temple. 00:39:11.51\00:39:13.45 The people had clearly violated the covenant. 00:39:13.48\00:39:15.98 They were in apostasy, they were in lethargy, 00:39:16.02\00:39:19.25 they were in hypocrisy, and their treatment 00:39:19.29\00:39:22.39 of their fellow Israelites violated 00:39:22.42\00:39:25.19 the covenant pre-principles that they had 00:39:25.23\00:39:28.40 promised to uphold. 00:39:28.43\00:39:29.76 There's idolatry taking place. There's perversion of justice. 00:39:29.80\00:39:34.24 Let's look at the appeal. 00:39:34.27\00:39:35.60 This is verses 3 through 5, we're in Micah 6:3-5. 00:39:35.64\00:39:39.27 Oh, my people, God's talking to the people. 00:39:39.31\00:39:41.58 "O My people, what have I done to you? 00:39:41.61\00:39:45.65 How have I wearied you?" 00:39:45.68\00:39:50.49 I don't know about you, but that gets me. 00:39:50.52\00:39:52.52 How have I wearied you? 00:39:52.55\00:39:56.69 Do you not think we've wearied God? 00:39:56.73\00:39:58.49 Do you not think the children of Judah, 00:39:58.53\00:39:59.96 the children of Israel had wearied God by breaking 00:40:00.00\00:40:03.33 the covenant, and yet God comes to them and says, 00:40:03.37\00:40:06.13 "My people, how have I wearied you?" 00:40:06.17\00:40:10.37 I remember when I was young, 00:40:10.41\00:40:12.37 the strongest discipline 00:40:12.41\00:40:13.74 I ever received was not a spanking. 00:40:13.78\00:40:16.41 And I got more than my fair share of spanking. 00:40:16.44\00:40:19.51 I deserved them clearly. 00:40:19.55\00:40:21.88 But the strongest discipline I ever received, 00:40:21.92\00:40:23.79 I'll never forget it. I was probably 10 years old. 00:40:23.82\00:40:25.65 My mom came in the bedroom and I was standing by the bed, 00:40:25.69\00:40:28.29 and I knew I was keeping my backside away 00:40:28.32\00:40:30.13 'cause I knew I was about ready to get it. 00:40:30.16\00:40:32.06 And she said, she knelt down, and she began to cry. 00:40:32.09\00:40:35.80 And she said, "God, Jill is rebellious. 00:40:35.83\00:40:39.57 I don't know how to get through to her. 00:40:39.60\00:40:42.20 I want her to follow You, but she's not following You." 00:40:42.24\00:40:46.24 That was the best discipline I ever got. 00:40:46.27\00:40:48.04 Absolutely. 00:40:48.08\00:40:49.41 How have I wearied you? 00:40:49.44\00:40:52.85 God says, "What have I done?" Right. 00:40:52.88\00:40:55.48 And then He says, "Testify against me." 00:40:55.52\00:40:58.19 And He goes on to proclaim how He has kept His side 00:40:58.22\00:41:01.59 of the covenant, even though the people they broke theirs. 00:41:01.62\00:41:04.63 He says, "I brought you up from the land of Egypt. 00:41:04.66\00:41:08.03 I redeemed you from the house of bondage." 00:41:08.06\00:41:10.50 He reminds them what He did to them. 00:41:10.53\00:41:14.10 "I sent before you Moses, Aaron and Miriam, 00:41:14.14\00:41:17.21 I gave you good leadership My people." 00:41:17.24\00:41:20.94 Remember now what Balak, King of Moab counseled? 00:41:20.98\00:41:23.78 And what Balaam, the son of Beor answered him. 00:41:23.81\00:41:26.05 What is he saying? 00:41:26.08\00:41:27.78 That Balaam was supposed to curse the children of Israel. 00:41:27.82\00:41:32.32 And what does God say? 00:41:32.35\00:41:33.69 "I turned it into a blessing. 00:41:33.72\00:41:35.06 I would not lay him curse 00:41:35.09\00:41:36.62 when I protected you from that." 00:41:36.66\00:41:38.76 It says, "And from Acacia Grove to Gilgal," 00:41:38.79\00:41:41.83 those were two cities on either side of the Jordan. 00:41:41.86\00:41:44.07 So what is He saying? 00:41:44.10\00:41:45.43 "I'm the one who brought you over the River Jordan. 00:41:45.47\00:41:48.27 I'm the one who brought you into the Promised Land." 00:41:48.30\00:41:51.41 Why did He do all this? 00:41:51.44\00:41:52.81 That you may know the righteousness of the Lord. 00:41:52.84\00:41:57.11 Awesome. God wanted them to know Him. 00:41:57.15\00:41:59.38 God wanted to reveal His righteousness to them. 00:41:59.41\00:42:01.85 He reminds them that He kept His portion of the covenant. 00:42:01.88\00:42:06.15 And now we see the answer, in verses 6 and 7 00:42:06.19\00:42:08.46 the people answer, and then God answers. 00:42:08.49\00:42:11.49 It says, "What shall I come with 00:42:11.53\00:42:13.09 what shall I come before the Lord, 00:42:13.13\00:42:15.16 and bow myself before the High God? 00:42:15.20\00:42:17.40 Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, 00:42:17.43\00:42:19.60 with calves a year old? 00:42:19.63\00:42:21.20 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, 00:42:21.24\00:42:24.34 ten thousand rivers of oil? 00:42:24.37\00:42:26.61 Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, 00:42:26.64\00:42:30.11 the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 00:42:30.15\00:42:32.98 What's going on? 00:42:33.01\00:42:34.35 The people are saying, "God, what do you want? 00:42:34.38\00:42:36.69 Do you want more sacrifice? 00:42:36.72\00:42:38.55 Do you want more rams? 00:42:38.59\00:42:40.12 Do you want child sacrifices like Ahaz had engaged in? 00:42:40.16\00:42:44.19 What are you looking for?" 00:42:44.23\00:42:45.56 God is not interested in religious ritual. 00:42:45.59\00:42:48.73 God is not interested in your hypocrisy. 00:42:48.76\00:42:52.07 God wants worship that is not centered on outward show. 00:42:52.10\00:42:57.04 Amen. 00:42:57.07\00:42:58.41 It's time that we were done as a people with legalism. 00:42:58.44\00:43:01.44 It's time that we were done as a people with hypocrisy. 00:43:01.48\00:43:04.88 It's time that we were done as a people with outward show, 00:43:04.91\00:43:09.82 and we get to the heart of the matter. 00:43:09.85\00:43:11.25 And what is the heart of the matter? 00:43:11.29\00:43:13.12 It's in verse 8. 00:43:13.15\00:43:14.79 He is showing you, oh man, what is good. 00:43:14.82\00:43:18.33 What does the Lord require of you? 00:43:18.36\00:43:20.43 Three things, but to do justly, to love mercy, 00:43:20.46\00:43:26.30 to walk humbly with your God. 00:43:26.33\00:43:30.11 What is God's answer? 00:43:30.14\00:43:31.47 He just says, "I want you in covenant. 00:43:31.51\00:43:33.41 I want you to walk in covenant obedience with Me 00:43:33.44\00:43:38.21 as My children." 00:43:38.25\00:43:39.71 We are to respond to God's forgiveness, 00:43:39.75\00:43:42.25 respond to His deliverance, respond to His love, 00:43:42.28\00:43:46.32 respond to His grace. 00:43:46.35\00:43:48.46 It's the same verse. 00:43:48.49\00:43:49.82 This is similar, this verse, 00:43:49.86\00:43:51.19 to what Pastor Ryan had talked about in Deuteronomy 00:43:51.23\00:43:54.06 Chapter 10. 00:43:54.10\00:43:55.73 Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? 00:43:55.76\00:43:57.93 It's the same thing coming back here again in Micah 6:8. 00:43:57.97\00:44:03.20 That threefold answer to do justly. 00:44:03.24\00:44:05.57 We are to act with justice toward other people. 00:44:05.61\00:44:09.61 This is how we treat people. 00:44:09.64\00:44:11.05 This is our, you could say horizontal relationship 00:44:11.08\00:44:14.95 with how we treat our brothers and sisters, 00:44:14.98\00:44:17.05 whether they know God or don't, 00:44:17.09\00:44:18.99 whether they're in the church or not, 00:44:19.02\00:44:20.82 whether we like them or not, we're to treat people justly. 00:44:20.86\00:44:24.23 Number two, we are to love mercy. 00:44:24.26\00:44:26.39 This word mercy hesed, Shelley, 00:44:26.43\00:44:29.00 I love that God's covenant to loyalty, 00:44:29.03\00:44:31.87 His loving-kindness. 00:44:31.90\00:44:34.34 We're not just to treat people fairly and honestly 00:44:34.37\00:44:36.81 with justice, we're to love other people. 00:44:36.84\00:44:39.41 This is horizontal. 00:44:39.44\00:44:40.94 We are to extend mercy to our brothers and sisters. 00:44:40.98\00:44:44.91 And number three, 00:44:44.95\00:44:46.28 we are to walk humbly with our God. 00:44:46.31\00:44:49.25 This is vertical. 00:44:49.28\00:44:50.62 This is our relationship with God to walk in humility. 00:44:50.65\00:44:55.92 You see, true biblical faith, 00:44:55.96\00:44:58.16 it affects every aspect of our lives. 00:44:58.19\00:45:01.83 Faith is not just something we proclaim, 00:45:01.86\00:45:03.87 I'm a Seventh-day Adventist Christian 00:45:03.90\00:45:05.43 or I'm whatever denomination, no. 00:45:05.47\00:45:07.87 It is lifestyle, it enters into every fiber of our being, 00:45:07.90\00:45:13.48 and it changes who we are. 00:45:13.51\00:45:15.71 Amen. Amen. 00:45:15.74\00:45:17.31 Praise the Lord. 00:45:17.35\00:45:18.68 That was really powerful, Jill, 00:45:18.71\00:45:20.05 and every one of you guys have all just knocked it 00:45:20.08\00:45:21.85 out of the park. 00:45:21.88\00:45:23.22 I'm James Rafferty, and I have Thursday's lesson, 00:45:23.25\00:45:26.35 which is Daniel's Prayer. 00:45:26.39\00:45:29.59 You know, Christian experience is based on God's Word. 00:45:29.62\00:45:33.29 And Daniel's Christian experience was stellar, 00:45:33.33\00:45:37.83 especially in Daniel Chapter 9. 00:45:37.87\00:45:39.50 And that's because Daniel's experience 00:45:39.53\00:45:42.20 was based on the Word of God, specifically, 00:45:42.24\00:45:45.57 it was based on Deuteronomy 4:30-31. 00:45:45.61\00:45:50.61 And we just want to look at those two verses 00:45:50.65\00:45:52.88 as we open up our lesson study here on Daniel. 00:45:52.91\00:45:55.65 I don't know if you realize, 00:45:55.68\00:45:57.09 I didn't realize 00:45:57.12\00:45:58.45 how significant of a connection there was 00:45:58.49\00:46:00.39 between Daniel Chapter 9, and the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:46:00.42\00:46:03.86 But here it is, Daniel's in captivity, 00:46:03.89\00:46:05.73 his whole nation has been in apostasy, 00:46:05.76\00:46:08.13 they've been taken captive by Babylon, 00:46:08.16\00:46:10.57 all the promises have failed, and Daniel is beside himself. 00:46:10.60\00:46:14.77 He doesn't know what to do, what to think. 00:46:14.80\00:46:16.67 He's just been given this 2300 day prophecy, 00:46:16.71\00:46:19.04 the 70 years are over, he's thinking, 00:46:19.07\00:46:20.84 "We've got to go back. 00:46:20.88\00:46:22.21 What's going on?" He's confused. 00:46:22.24\00:46:24.38 And what does he do? 00:46:24.41\00:46:25.75 He turns to the Book of the Law. 00:46:25.78\00:46:27.92 He turns to Deuteronomy Chapter 4. 00:46:27.95\00:46:30.09 Look at these two verses and tell me they don't describe 00:46:30.12\00:46:32.75 Daniel's experience in Daniel Chapter 9. 00:46:32.79\00:46:35.26 Deuteronomy 4:30, "When thou art in tribulation," 00:46:35.29\00:46:38.79 oh, yeah, they were in tribulation, 00:46:38.83\00:46:40.16 "when these things are come upon thee," 00:46:40.20\00:46:42.16 oh, they've really come upon them, 00:46:42.20\00:46:43.80 "in the latter days after all these kings rose and fell, 00:46:43.83\00:46:47.80 if thou turn to the Lord thy God, 00:46:47.84\00:46:50.97 and shall be obedient unto His voice." 00:46:51.01\00:46:52.91 That's what Daniel is doing. 00:46:52.94\00:46:54.28 He's turning to Lord, he's been obedient unto his voice. 00:46:54.31\00:46:56.04 Verse 31, "For the Lord thy God is a merciful God. 00:46:56.08\00:47:00.88 He will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, 00:47:00.92\00:47:03.75 nor forget the covenant of thy fathers, 00:47:03.79\00:47:06.42 which he swear unto them." 00:47:06.45\00:47:08.42 This is what Daniel is doing. 00:47:08.46\00:47:09.89 Daniel has this amazing experience in Daniel Chapter 9. 00:47:09.92\00:47:13.06 I'm just going to summarize Daniel 9:1-19. 00:47:13.09\00:47:16.46 And by the way, this happened in the first year of Darius. 00:47:16.50\00:47:19.77 The first year of Darius is also 00:47:19.80\00:47:21.14 when Daniel got thrown into the lions' den 00:47:21.17\00:47:22.80 because he refused to stop praying. 00:47:22.84\00:47:24.94 Guess what he's doing right now. 00:47:24.97\00:47:26.74 He's praying and who knows? 00:47:26.78\00:47:28.11 Maybe in lions' den when he was praying, 00:47:28.14\00:47:30.01 we don't know. 00:47:30.05\00:47:31.38 But we know prayer is important. 00:47:31.41\00:47:32.75 It's vital for us to be in prayer. 00:47:32.78\00:47:35.05 Daniel realizes this. 00:47:35.08\00:47:36.42 So he's willing to put his life on the line as he prays. 00:47:36.45\00:47:39.49 Now, the reason Daniel is praying 00:47:39.52\00:47:40.86 is because he's just been given this prophecy, 00:47:40.89\00:47:42.46 this 2300 day prophecy in Daniel Chapter 8, 00:47:42.49\00:47:45.56 specifically verse 14, 00:47:45.59\00:47:47.23 and he doesn't know what it means. 00:47:47.26\00:47:48.86 So Daniel goes to prayer, 00:47:48.90\00:47:51.27 and he goes to the Book of Jeremiah. 00:47:51.30\00:47:54.10 He goes to the Bible, and he goes to the Lord 00:47:54.14\00:47:56.64 and he prays, and he says, "Lord, I don't get it." 00:47:56.67\00:47:58.97 I mean, if you read Daniel 8:27, 00:47:59.01\00:48:00.71 he admits that. 00:48:00.74\00:48:02.08 You know, sometimes, as preachers, 00:48:02.11\00:48:03.51 I've been in ministry for 37 years, 00:48:03.55\00:48:05.05 and I don't want to admit 00:48:05.08\00:48:06.41 so readily that there's something I don't know. 00:48:06.45\00:48:09.55 Daniel is an old statesman at this time, 00:48:09.58\00:48:11.55 a politician and a man of God, 00:48:11.59\00:48:13.96 and he's ready to admit he doesn't know something. 00:48:13.99\00:48:15.92 He doesn't know something about 00:48:15.96\00:48:17.29 what we all know something about, right? 00:48:17.33\00:48:18.66 We all know about the 2300 day prophecy, 00:48:18.69\00:48:20.03 you know what I mean. 00:48:20.06\00:48:21.40 He doesn't know it. He doesn't understand. 00:48:21.43\00:48:22.76 He says, "Lord, I don't get it. 00:48:22.80\00:48:24.13 I don't understand it." 00:48:24.17\00:48:25.50 Daniel has intellectual humility. 00:48:25.53\00:48:29.00 Yes. Intellectual humility. 00:48:29.04\00:48:30.41 Amen. 00:48:30.44\00:48:31.77 And then we see Daniel, he fasts and he prays, 00:48:31.81\00:48:35.64 he humbles himself before the Lord. 00:48:35.68\00:48:38.11 He's following an outline that we find 00:48:38.15\00:48:40.12 all through the Old Testament. 00:48:40.15\00:48:41.48 Daniel has behavioral, 00:48:41.52\00:48:44.15 behavioral humility. 00:48:44.19\00:48:47.06 And then we see Daniel, he has this attitude, 00:48:47.09\00:48:50.39 and it begins in verse 5, 00:48:50.43\00:48:51.79 he has this attitude that so often 00:48:51.83\00:48:53.66 is missing in the Christian experience. 00:48:53.70\00:48:55.23 Has this attitude of confession that involves 00:48:55.26\00:48:58.03 a corporate confession. 00:48:58.07\00:48:59.40 Right. 00:48:59.43\00:49:00.77 He doesn't say they, those guys, that church, 00:49:00.80\00:49:02.70 those people, he says we, we have sinned. 00:49:02.74\00:49:05.54 Now, he's including himself with the apostasy 00:49:05.57\00:49:07.74 of his entire nation here. 00:49:07.78\00:49:09.28 He's doing something that Jesus does. 00:49:09.31\00:49:12.25 It's a corporate relationship, 00:49:12.28\00:49:14.35 a corporate responsibility that Daniel 00:49:14.38\00:49:16.12 is taking on for everyone else, we have sinned. 00:49:16.15\00:49:18.62 And He says this over and over again, once, twice, 00:49:18.65\00:49:21.19 three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 00:49:21.22\00:49:23.86 all the way through Daniel 9:5-11. 00:49:23.89\00:49:26.86 All the way through there, 00:49:26.90\00:49:28.23 he has this relational humility. 00:49:28.26\00:49:31.80 Relational humility, the way he relates to people, 00:49:31.83\00:49:34.24 relational humility, 00:49:34.27\00:49:35.60 so he has intellectual humility, 00:49:35.64\00:49:37.17 behavioral humility, and relational humility. 00:49:37.21\00:49:40.18 And then, as he gets down to the last verses, 00:49:40.21\00:49:43.45 verses 17 to 19, he tells God 00:49:43.48\00:49:46.05 why it is this he's asking all these things. 00:49:46.08\00:49:47.88 You know why he's asking all these things? 00:49:47.92\00:49:50.45 Not so we can have this big name and glory and fame, 00:49:50.49\00:49:53.86 and look what we're doing, and look 00:49:53.89\00:49:55.22 what we've accomplished, 00:49:55.26\00:49:56.59 and look at all the things that... 00:49:56.62\00:49:57.96 He is praying this for God's name's sake, 00:49:57.99\00:50:00.50 for God's glory, 00:50:00.53\00:50:02.06 that His name would not be reproached 00:50:02.10\00:50:03.70 among the Gentiles. 00:50:03.73\00:50:05.07 He is more concerned about 00:50:05.10\00:50:06.43 God's glory than he is about his own glory, 00:50:06.47\00:50:08.24 and we could call that motivational. 00:50:08.27\00:50:12.84 That's good. 00:50:12.87\00:50:14.21 He's motivated by the glory of God. 00:50:14.24\00:50:15.58 He's motivated by the love of God. 00:50:15.61\00:50:16.95 What a prayer? 00:50:16.98\00:50:18.78 What a corporate prayer? 00:50:18.81\00:50:20.15 What a powerful prayer? 00:50:20.18\00:50:21.52 And this powerful corporate prayer brings 00:50:21.55\00:50:23.82 a corporate answer. 00:50:23.85\00:50:25.45 That's what it does, it brings a corporate answer. 00:50:25.49\00:50:26.96 And we're going to get to that in just a second. 00:50:26.99\00:50:28.32 But I want us to read the quarterly here, 00:50:28.36\00:50:30.03 the lesson quarterly says, 00:50:30.06\00:50:31.39 "Daniel's prayer is a summary of exactly 00:50:31.43\00:50:33.90 what the nation had been warned about in Deuteronomy 00:50:33.93\00:50:36.10 regarding the fruits of not keeping their end 00:50:36.13\00:50:38.03 of the covenant." 00:50:38.07\00:50:39.40 Twice, Daniel referred back to the Law of Moses, 00:50:39.43\00:50:41.20 Daniel 9:11-13, 00:50:41.24\00:50:42.94 which certainly included Deuteronomy, 00:50:42.97\00:50:44.71 in this case, might have been specifically 00:50:44.74\00:50:47.11 referring to it as Shelley mentioned. 00:50:47.14\00:50:49.44 As Deuteronomy has said, 00:50:49.48\00:50:51.68 they were driven from the land, 00:50:51.71\00:50:53.88 see Deuteronomy 4:27-31, and Deuteronomy 28, 00:50:53.92\00:50:56.92 because they didn't obey exactly 00:50:56.95\00:50:59.75 what Moses had been told would happen. 00:50:59.79\00:51:02.42 They didn't obey, and that's what Moses said 00:51:02.46\00:51:03.79 was going to happen in Deuteronomy 31:29. 00:51:03.83\00:51:06.06 How tragic too that instead of the gnash nations 00:51:06.09\00:51:09.36 around them, saying, "Surely, this is a great nation 00:51:09.40\00:51:12.40 and a wise and understanding people, 00:51:12.43\00:51:14.30 Israel became a reproach to those same nations," pause. 00:51:14.34\00:51:20.04 God's promises never fail. 00:51:20.08\00:51:23.48 And even if the entire nation says no, 00:51:23.51\00:51:28.05 if one person says yes, and that would be Daniel, 00:51:28.08\00:51:32.15 God's promises are sure. That's right. 00:51:32.19\00:51:34.72 They became an... 00:51:34.76\00:51:37.06 What does it say here? 00:51:37.09\00:51:40.83 An amazement, an astonishment to the nations 00:51:40.86\00:51:43.80 around them through Daniel and his friends 00:51:43.83\00:51:47.10 who stayed faithful to God. 00:51:47.14\00:51:48.47 Amen. 00:51:48.50\00:51:49.84 We don't have to worry about the apostasy of others, 00:51:49.87\00:51:51.47 because Jesus is our Savior and His Word is true. 00:51:51.51\00:51:54.94 We need to be faithful in what God has given us 00:51:54.98\00:51:57.28 to be faithful in and God's promises will be fulfilled. 00:51:57.31\00:52:00.82 So we can see Daniel, in a sense, 00:52:00.85\00:52:03.69 as a type of Christ, because Daniel Chapter 9 00:52:03.72\00:52:07.12 is what covenant faithfulness looks like in the life 00:52:07.16\00:52:10.56 of a believer. 00:52:10.59\00:52:12.36 Now Daniel Chapter 9 doesn't end there. 00:52:12.39\00:52:13.90 We close out here in the last few minutes 00:52:13.93\00:52:16.26 that we have together in verses 24 to 27. 00:52:16.30\00:52:18.97 Here is the prophecy of Jesus, 00:52:19.00\00:52:20.60 its prophecy was death upon the cross, 00:52:20.64\00:52:22.60 but it's not just the prophecy of His death upon the cross. 00:52:22.64\00:52:24.87 Look at these verses with me 00:52:24.91\00:52:26.57 and recognize that this is also a prophecy 00:52:26.61\00:52:30.21 of what Jesus Christ would accomplish 00:52:30.25\00:52:32.21 as the covenant giver. 00:52:32.25\00:52:36.02 Jesus Christ is the covenant giver. 00:52:36.05\00:52:38.29 Jesus Christ is on the upside of the covenant. 00:52:38.32\00:52:40.62 But Daniel Chapter 9 is telling us that Jesus Christ 00:52:40.66\00:52:43.16 is also on the downside of the covenant. 00:52:43.19\00:52:46.13 Jesus Christ is a covenant giver, 00:52:46.16\00:52:47.93 and Jesus Christ is a covenant fulfiller. 00:52:47.96\00:52:51.13 He's on both sides. 00:52:51.17\00:52:52.50 And because He's a giver, and because He's a fulfiller 00:52:52.53\00:52:55.00 of the covenant as God and as man, 00:52:55.04\00:52:57.81 we have Daniel's. 00:52:57.84\00:52:59.94 We have people in the Bible, 00:52:59.97\00:53:02.38 who accept the righteousness of Jesus Christ, 00:53:02.41\00:53:04.55 they actually live out the very principles of the covenant, 00:53:04.58\00:53:07.85 because they scratch that Old Testament effort 00:53:07.88\00:53:10.19 which led to apostasy 00:53:10.22\00:53:11.55 and they scratch that New Testament effort 00:53:11.59\00:53:13.22 which led to legalism, 00:53:13.25\00:53:14.89 and they put their trust totally in the righteousness 00:53:14.92\00:53:17.66 of Jesus Christ. 00:53:17.69\00:53:19.03 Now look at this in Daniel Chapter 9, 00:53:19.06\00:53:20.86 beginning with verse 24. 00:53:20.90\00:53:22.23 It's so powerful. 00:53:22.26\00:53:24.33 Daniel 9:24, 00:53:24.37\00:53:26.23 we have a covenant prayer that's going to get 00:53:26.27\00:53:27.67 a covenant answer and that covenant answer 00:53:27.70\00:53:29.34 is Jesus and Jesus is coming, excuse me, 00:53:29.37\00:53:31.67 a corporate prayer that's going to get a corporate answer, 00:53:31.71\00:53:34.14 Jesus is coming to do what only He can do. 00:53:34.18\00:53:36.71 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people 00:53:36.75\00:53:38.81 and upon thy holy city, to finish transgression, 00:53:38.85\00:53:40.55 and to make an end of sins, 00:53:40.58\00:53:41.92 make reconciliation for iniquity, 00:53:41.95\00:53:43.28 bring in everlasting righteousness, 00:53:43.32\00:53:44.72 seal up the vision and prophecy, 00:53:44.75\00:53:46.15 and anoint the most Holy." 00:53:46.19\00:53:47.52 That's seven tasks. 00:53:47.56\00:53:48.89 Seven tasks that had to be accomplished. 00:53:48.92\00:53:50.43 Did Israel accomplish these tasks? 00:53:50.46\00:53:52.83 That's a trick question. Yes. 00:53:52.86\00:53:55.03 Because Jesus Christ was Israel, 00:53:55.06\00:53:57.33 and Jesus Christ came to fulfill these tasks. 00:53:57.37\00:53:59.67 In fact, in verse 25, God makes it very clear, 00:53:59.70\00:54:02.60 Gabriel says to Daniel, "Know therefore and understand, 00:54:02.64\00:54:06.14 that from the going forth of the commandment 00:54:06.17\00:54:07.64 to restore and build Jerusalem unto Messiah 00:54:07.68\00:54:09.54 the Prince shall be..." 00:54:09.58\00:54:11.51 Seven weeks. 00:54:11.55\00:54:12.88 "Three score, seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks." 00:54:12.91\00:54:14.88 That's 69 weeks. 00:54:14.92\00:54:16.52 "Daniel, you and your people have 70 weeks 00:54:16.55\00:54:18.45 to get your act together." 00:54:18.49\00:54:19.82 Yes. "But don't be worried. 00:54:19.85\00:54:21.42 This is New Covenant now, 00:54:21.46\00:54:22.79 get your New Covenant glasses on," right? 00:54:22.82\00:54:24.16 Right. 00:54:24.19\00:54:25.53 The Messiah is coming in 69.
