Amen. 00:03:19.56\00:03:21.10 Our memory text for this week, 00:03:21.13\00:03:23.40 Turn Their Hearts is found in Deuteronomy 4:29, 00:03:23.43\00:03:28.54 and the Bible says, 00:03:28.57\00:03:29.90 "But from there you will seek the Lord your God, 00:03:29.94\00:03:33.48 and you will find Him 00:03:33.51\00:03:35.61 if you seek Him with all your heart 00:03:35.64\00:03:37.95 and with all your soul." 00:03:37.98\00:03:40.32 I love that. 00:03:40.35\00:03:41.68 It reminds me of Jeremiah 29:11-13, 00:03:41.72\00:03:44.65 which I know one of the panel members 00:03:44.69\00:03:46.19 I'm sure is gonna get to that. 00:03:46.22\00:03:47.99 But, you know, the lesson brings out 00:03:48.02\00:03:49.92 on Sabbath afternoon that it doesn't take much 00:03:49.96\00:03:52.66 anyone who's drawing breath and walking this earth 00:03:52.69\00:03:56.20 is definitely and cannot deny their need of grace, 00:03:56.23\00:04:00.14 their need of a Savior. 00:04:00.17\00:04:01.50 For the Bible reminds us in Romans 3:23-26. 00:04:01.54\00:04:05.94 And I'm just gonna emphasize verse 23 here 00:04:05.97\00:04:08.38 because again, when you wake up in the morning, 00:04:08.41\00:04:10.15 and you're staring at that person, 00:04:10.18\00:04:11.51 that image in that mirror, looking back at you, 00:04:11.55\00:04:14.02 that is someone who has of need of grace, 00:04:14.05\00:04:16.18 someone who needs Jesus. 00:04:16.22\00:04:17.55 Why? 00:04:17.59\00:04:18.92 Because the Bible tells us in Romans 3:23, 00:04:18.95\00:04:20.69 "For all have sinned and fallen short 00:04:20.72\00:04:24.13 of the glory of God." 00:04:24.16\00:04:25.96 But I love... Many people stop right there, 00:04:25.99\00:04:28.00 but let's continue reading 00:04:28.03\00:04:29.36 because there's a beautiful hope, 00:04:29.40\00:04:30.73 a beautiful message following this 00:04:30.77\00:04:32.10 in verses 24-26. 00:04:32.13\00:04:34.24 It says, "Being justified freely by His grace 00:04:34.27\00:04:38.54 through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 00:04:38.57\00:04:42.24 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, 00:04:42.28\00:04:46.51 through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, 00:04:46.55\00:04:50.79 because in His forbearance God has passed over the sins 00:04:50.82\00:04:54.36 that were previously committed, 00:04:54.39\00:04:56.46 to demonstrate at the present time 00:04:56.49\00:04:59.43 His righteousness, 00:04:59.46\00:05:00.90 that He might be just and the justifier 00:05:00.93\00:05:04.27 of the one who has faith in Jesus." 00:05:04.30\00:05:06.97 Amen! 00:05:07.00\00:05:08.34 The gospel just summed up right there all in those few verses, 00:05:08.37\00:05:11.67 we all have sinned and fallen short 00:05:11.71\00:05:13.54 of the glory of God, 00:05:13.58\00:05:14.91 but Jesus Christ, if our faith is placed in Jesus Christ, 00:05:14.94\00:05:18.48 He is the justifier. 00:05:18.51\00:05:20.05 He is the one who brings righteousness. 00:05:20.08\00:05:22.85 And ultimately, what the lesson leads us 00:05:22.88\00:05:24.72 to on Sunday is a realization 00:05:24.75\00:05:27.26 that in order for that righteousness to come, 00:05:27.29\00:05:29.36 in order for that faith to be established, 00:05:29.39\00:05:31.86 and that righteousness, 00:05:31.89\00:05:33.23 that justification that comes from Christ, 00:05:33.26\00:05:35.03 we must be brought into a state of repentance, 00:05:35.06\00:05:39.10 a realization that I'm broken, I'm fallen, 00:05:39.13\00:05:42.74 I've hit rock bottom, there's nothing that I can add. 00:05:42.77\00:05:45.51 There's nothing that I can do to save myself. 00:05:45.54\00:05:48.68 And that's what Sunday's lesson brings about. 00:05:48.71\00:05:50.55 And it's got quite an interesting title. 00:05:50.58\00:05:53.31 It's a Hebrew word, Mi-Yitten. 00:05:53.35\00:05:56.02 Mi-Yitten. 00:05:56.05\00:05:57.39 And I love what Brother Clifford Goldstein 00:05:57.42\00:06:00.02 has to say here at the beginning, 00:06:00.06\00:06:01.39 just to kind of explain to us this Mi-Yitten in the Hebrew. 00:06:01.42\00:06:05.33 He says, "Biblical Hebrew, like most languages, 00:06:05.36\00:06:08.40 is sprinkled with idioms, 00:06:08.43\00:06:10.67 when specific words are used to mean something different 00:06:10.70\00:06:13.60 from what they actually say. 00:06:13.64\00:06:15.77 One idiom in the Old Testament is and he says, Mi-Yitten, 00:06:15.80\00:06:19.31 which, of course, Mi is the question 'who?' 00:06:19.34\00:06:22.81 and yitten means 'will give.' 00:06:22.84\00:06:25.18 So, literally, Mi-Yitten is 'who will give?' 00:06:25.21\00:06:29.45 And, of course, in the Old Testament, 00:06:29.48\00:06:30.82 however, the phrase expresses the idea of a wish, 00:06:30.85\00:06:34.49 or a strong desire of someone wanting 00:06:34.52\00:06:37.93 something badly." 00:06:37.96\00:06:40.06 And, my friends, isn't that what we experience 00:06:40.10\00:06:42.60 when you behold Jesus Christ on the cross? 00:06:42.63\00:06:45.87 When you spend some time, 00:06:45.90\00:06:47.24 I'm gonna speak sanctuary language here for a moment. 00:06:47.27\00:06:49.14 When you spend some time at that altar of sacrifice, 00:06:49.17\00:06:51.94 as you're in the way of God, 00:06:51.97\00:06:53.31 Thy way, oh, God is in the sanctuary. 00:06:53.34\00:06:55.58 And that beautiful experience begins at the gate, 00:06:55.61\00:06:58.68 your realization that you have need 00:06:58.71\00:07:00.62 of forgiveness of needed repentance, 00:07:00.65\00:07:02.35 and you behold the uplifted lamb, 00:07:02.38\00:07:04.49 the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, 00:07:04.52\00:07:06.82 the Lamb slain from the foundation 00:07:06.86\00:07:08.56 of the world. 00:07:08.59\00:07:09.92 My friends, we see very clearly that in response to that, 00:07:09.96\00:07:12.73 our natural response is that we see something's wrong, 00:07:12.76\00:07:16.23 something's wrong, and we desire badly 00:07:16.26\00:07:19.13 as brought out here Mi-Yitten, 00:07:19.17\00:07:20.67 we wish, we desire, 00:07:20.70\00:07:23.20 and we kind of somewhat come out of that saying, 00:07:23.24\00:07:25.41 who will give righteousness? 00:07:25.44\00:07:28.41 Who will provide righteousness? 00:07:28.44\00:07:30.55 And we desire that righteousness. 00:07:30.58\00:07:32.25 Just some examples that the lesson 00:07:32.28\00:07:33.62 brings out of this Mi-Yitten. 00:07:33.65\00:07:36.08 Exodus 16:3, and this is, 00:07:36.12\00:07:39.45 you know, we've referred these verses many times, 00:07:39.49\00:07:41.29 but you just don't really understand 00:07:41.32\00:07:43.86 the application, the seriousness, 00:07:43.89\00:07:45.39 and the deepness of the application 00:07:45.43\00:07:46.90 of the original Greek 00:07:46.93\00:07:48.26 because it can't really be expressed in English, 00:07:48.30\00:07:50.27 or in the Hebrew, excuse me, 00:07:50.30\00:07:51.77 it can't really be expressed in English to the fullest. 00:07:51.80\00:07:53.97 We do our best to do that though, 00:07:54.00\00:07:55.54 but in the original Hebrew here of Exodus 16:3, 00:07:55.57\00:08:00.01 I'll read the English, but it says here, 00:08:00.04\00:08:01.91 "All that we had died by the hand of the Lord 00:08:01.94\00:08:05.21 in the land of Egypt." 00:08:05.25\00:08:06.75 And it's interesting because that word oh, 00:08:06.78\00:08:09.78 that word oh, you would just pass right over 00:08:09.82\00:08:12.59 in the original Hebrew Mi-Yitten. 00:08:12.62\00:08:15.06 Oh, it's basically means, oh, all that I desire. 00:08:15.09\00:08:19.13 Oh, how badly we desire, how badly we long 00:08:19.16\00:08:21.66 that we should have died 00:08:21.70\00:08:23.03 by the hand of the Lord in Egypt. 00:08:23.06\00:08:24.40 Psalm 14:7. 00:08:24.43\00:08:26.33 Again, the word oh here. 00:08:26.37\00:08:28.20 "Oh, that the salvation of Israel 00:08:28.24\00:08:30.27 would come out of Zion!" 00:08:30.31\00:08:32.47 So again, Mi-Yitten. 00:08:32.51\00:08:34.41 Oh, a strong desire that salvation of Israel 00:08:34.44\00:08:37.91 would come out of Zion. 00:08:37.95\00:08:39.28 Again, Job 6:8, same word again, 00:08:39.31\00:08:42.78 "Oh, that I might have my request." 00:08:42.82\00:08:45.69 Mi-Yitten, a strong desire for that. 00:08:45.72\00:08:49.89 But again, this is expressed once more 00:08:49.92\00:08:51.93 from God Himself in the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:08:51.96\00:08:54.56 We're gonna read Deuteronomy 5:22-29. 00:08:54.60\00:08:58.67 This is huge here. 00:08:58.70\00:09:00.40 We're gonna read the entire passage here, 00:09:00.44\00:09:01.97 but we're gonna emphasize verse 29 00:09:02.00\00:09:04.71 because that's where we find this Mi-Yitten. 00:09:04.74\00:09:06.91 So let's go to Deuteronomy 5:22-29. 00:09:06.94\00:09:10.98 So it says, beginning in verse 22, 00:09:11.01\00:09:12.61 "These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly, 00:09:12.65\00:09:15.68 in the mountain from the midst of the fire, 00:09:15.72\00:09:17.79 the cloud, and the thick darkness, 00:09:17.82\00:09:19.49 with a loud voice, and He added no more. 00:09:19.52\00:09:23.06 And He wrote them on the two tablets of stone 00:09:23.09\00:09:25.76 and gave them to me." 00:09:25.79\00:09:27.80 So it's recounting the concept of which God, 00:09:27.83\00:09:30.57 at the time in which God gave him the Ten Commandments, 00:09:30.60\00:09:32.83 but then notice verse 23, and onward. 00:09:32.87\00:09:35.37 "So it was when you heard the voice 00:09:35.40\00:09:37.31 from the midst of the darkness, 00:09:37.34\00:09:38.67 while the mountain was burning with fire, 00:09:38.71\00:09:40.34 that you came near to me, 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.28 all the heads of your tribes and your elders. 00:09:42.31\00:09:44.98 And you said, 'Surely the Lord our God 00:09:45.01\00:09:47.05 has shown us His glory and His greatness, 00:09:47.08\00:09:49.65 and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire. 00:09:49.68\00:09:54.06 We have seen this day that God speaks with men, 00:09:54.09\00:09:56.89 yet he still lives. 00:09:56.93\00:09:59.29 Now therefore, why should we die 00:09:59.33\00:10:02.16 for this great fire will consume us, 00:10:02.20\00:10:04.40 if we hear the voice of the Lord our God anymore, 00:10:04.43\00:10:06.50 then we shall die." 00:10:06.53\00:10:08.57 And notice verse 26, 00:10:08.60\00:10:10.07 "For who is there of all flesh 00:10:10.11\00:10:12.07 who has heard the voice of the living God 00:10:12.11\00:10:14.41 speaking from the midst of the fire, 00:10:14.44\00:10:16.28 as we have, and lived? 00:10:16.31\00:10:19.18 You go..." Now they're commissioning 00:10:19.21\00:10:20.92 and they're commissioning, knows it, we don't want. 00:10:20.95\00:10:22.88 We don't want any part of this, 00:10:22.92\00:10:24.25 it's too much, too much thunder, too much. 00:10:24.29\00:10:26.12 It's too much of a scene. You go, Moses. 00:10:26.15\00:10:28.09 So they're saying, "You go near and hear all 00:10:28.12\00:10:30.76 that the Lord our God may say, 00:10:30.79\00:10:32.86 and tell us all that the Lord our God says to you, 00:10:32.89\00:10:35.33 and we will hear and do it." 00:10:35.36\00:10:37.60 Verse 28, "Then the Lord heard the voice of your words 00:10:37.63\00:10:40.94 when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me, 00:10:40.97\00:10:43.30 I have heard the voice of the words of this people 00:10:43.34\00:10:45.74 which they have spoken to you. 00:10:45.77\00:10:47.31 They are right in all that they have spoken." 00:10:47.34\00:10:50.38 And then here's verse 29. 00:10:50.41\00:10:51.85 Here's the key verse, ye-mitten. 00:10:51.88\00:10:54.48 Here it is. 00:10:54.52\00:10:55.92 I think I said that wrong. Mi-Yitten. 00:10:55.95\00:10:57.59 That's what I knew meant to say. 00:10:57.62\00:10:58.95 Mi-Yitten. 00:10:58.99\00:11:00.32 "Oh, that they had such a heart in them 00:11:00.36\00:11:04.13 that they would fear Me 00:11:04.16\00:11:05.63 and always keep My commandments, 00:11:05.66\00:11:08.10 that it might be well with them 00:11:08.13\00:11:10.13 and with their children forever!" 00:11:10.17\00:11:13.80 This is powerful. 00:11:13.84\00:11:15.17 And well, you could just almost just imagine the emotion 00:11:15.20\00:11:18.64 and the love pouring from the heart of God. 00:11:18.67\00:11:20.31 Oh, that these people would have a heart to follow Me 00:11:20.34\00:11:23.58 and to keep My commandments. 00:11:23.61\00:11:24.95 What an example of the reality of freewill here. 00:11:24.98\00:11:27.88 Notice how God is giving them choice, a freewill. 00:11:27.92\00:11:30.79 Here we see that there are limits 00:11:30.82\00:11:32.95 to what God can do 00:11:32.99\00:11:34.59 in the midst of the Great Controversy. 00:11:34.62\00:11:36.29 God limited Himself because God is love. 00:11:36.32\00:11:39.76 True love requires freedom. 00:11:39.79\00:11:41.60 This use of Mi-Yitten reveals 00:11:41.63\00:11:43.83 that even God can't trample on freewill 00:11:43.87\00:11:47.64 for the moment He did, 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.37 it would no longer be free. 00:11:49.40\00:11:51.24 So God has limits as well, but in this case, 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.94 it's for the salvation of man. 00:11:53.98\00:11:55.51 It's because He is love. 00:11:55.54\00:11:57.48 You know, this is talking about repentance. 00:11:57.51\00:11:59.05 God is drawing these people to repentance. 00:11:59.08\00:12:01.52 He's drawing us, 00:12:01.55\00:12:02.88 He's calling us to have a repentance. 00:12:02.92\00:12:04.65 We need to see our need of Him. 00:12:04.69\00:12:06.35 We need to understand our dependence on Him. 00:12:06.39\00:12:09.36 And as I was reading through this, 00:12:09.39\00:12:11.09 you know, God's saying, "Oh, 00:12:11.13\00:12:12.69 that they would have such a heart." 00:12:12.73\00:12:14.06 You know, it reminded me 00:12:14.10\00:12:17.03 as He's calling out to us, He's calling out to the lost. 00:12:17.07\00:12:20.17 And He, "Says to them: 'As I live, ' says the Lord God, 00:12:20.20\00:12:23.47 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, 00:12:23.51\00:12:25.47 but that they turn, 00:12:25.51\00:12:26.84 now that is the wicked turn from his way and live." 00:12:26.88\00:12:29.44 And you can just imagine hear Him crying out, 00:12:29.48\00:12:32.01 "Turn you, turn you from your evil ways! 00:12:32.05\00:12:34.32 For why should you die, O house of Israel?'" 00:12:34.35\00:12:37.85 God is always calling us to repentance. 00:12:37.89\00:12:40.19 It also made me think of Jesus coming out of the temple, 00:12:40.22\00:12:44.13 having that big showdown with the Pharisees 00:12:44.16\00:12:45.89 in the last week prior before going to the cross. 00:12:45.93\00:12:48.53 Matthew 23:37, Jesus cries out, "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, 00:12:48.56\00:12:53.34 the one who kills the prophets and stones 00:12:53.37\00:12:55.20 those who are sent to her! 00:12:55.24\00:12:56.67 How often I wanted to gather your children together, 00:12:56.71\00:12:59.91 as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, 00:12:59.94\00:13:03.28 but you were not willing!" 00:13:03.31\00:13:06.11 My friends, that's the key. 00:13:06.15\00:13:07.88 Are you willing? 00:13:07.92\00:13:09.25 Are you willing to be drawn by God? 00:13:09.28\00:13:11.35 Are you willing to give your heart to Him? 00:13:11.39\00:13:13.32 Are you willing 00:13:13.36\00:13:14.69 that He increases and you decrease? 00:13:14.72\00:13:17.53 This is essentially what this message is speaking 00:13:17.56\00:13:19.56 of drawing us to repentance. 00:13:19.59\00:13:21.86 2 Peter 3:9. I love this. 00:13:21.90\00:13:24.20 "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise." 00:13:24.23\00:13:27.44 The Lord doesn't break His promises. 00:13:27.47\00:13:29.40 "He's not slack concerning His promise, 00:13:29.44\00:13:31.94 as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, 00:13:31.97\00:13:36.08 not willing that any should perish 00:13:36.11\00:13:37.98 but that all should come to repentance." 00:13:38.01\00:13:41.62 My friends, had you had a Holy Spirit, 00:13:41.65\00:13:43.45 call a true, genuine, Holy Spirit experience? 00:13:43.49\00:13:48.06 Just like they did on the day of Pentecost. 00:13:48.09\00:13:50.69 When they were all standing there, 00:13:50.73\00:13:52.19 the Holy Spirit have just been poured out. 00:13:52.23\00:13:54.10 Have you had that genuine experience? 00:13:54.13\00:13:56.40 Because having heard the gospel message 00:13:56.43\00:13:58.50 and how their sins nailed Jesus to the cross, 00:13:58.53\00:14:01.10 you know, how the people responded? 00:14:01.14\00:14:02.80 Read Acts 2:37-38. 00:14:02.84\00:14:05.27 It says, "Now when they heard this, 00:14:05.31\00:14:06.98 they were cut to the heart, 00:14:07.01\00:14:08.78 and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, 00:14:08.81\00:14:10.48 'Men and brethren, what shall we do?' 00:14:10.51\00:14:12.71 Peter said to them, 'Repent, 00:14:12.75\00:14:14.48 let every one of you," there it is, "Repent, 00:14:14.52\00:14:16.55 let every one of you be baptized 00:14:16.58\00:14:18.12 in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, 00:14:18.15\00:14:21.32 and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.;" 00:14:21.36\00:14:24.33 My friends, repent, confess your sins to Jesus. 00:14:24.36\00:14:27.06 And we have that promise in 1 John 1:9, 00:14:27.10\00:14:29.40 that He is just to forgive us and to cleanse us 00:14:29.43\00:14:32.40 from all unrighteousness. 00:14:32.43\00:14:33.77 Praise the Lord. Amen. 00:14:33.80\00:14:35.14 Thank you so much, Pastor Ryan. 00:14:35.17\00:14:36.50 I love that, Mi-Yitten. 00:14:36.54\00:14:37.87 I'm gonna remember that. 00:14:37.91\00:14:39.24 I was taking notes in my Bible. 00:14:39.27\00:14:40.74 I have Monday's lesson, which is Seek Me and Find Me. 00:14:40.78\00:14:45.08 And My name is Jill Morikone. 00:14:45.11\00:14:47.88 Turn with me to Deuteronomy Chapter 4. 00:14:47.92\00:14:50.25 We're going to look at a few verses here. 00:14:50.29\00:14:53.19 Verses 22-31 and, Pastor John, 00:14:53.22\00:14:55.79 I have 10 takeaways from these verses here, 00:14:55.82\00:14:59.46 but before we jump in and actually read those verses. 00:14:59.49\00:15:02.60 If you look at Deuteronomy 4:15, 00:15:02.63\00:15:04.63 Moses is cautioning the people, 00:15:04.67\00:15:07.00 you're about ready to enter into the Promised Land. 00:15:07.04\00:15:09.40 Beware, he says in verse 15, "Take heed to yourselves." 00:15:09.44\00:15:13.51 And he's been cautioning them against idolatry. 00:15:13.54\00:15:16.95 Beware, you know that we should not worship idols, 00:15:16.98\00:15:19.91 and be careful when you move forward. 00:15:19.95\00:15:22.88 And then he says, verse 22, 00:15:22.92\00:15:25.35 is where we pick up our passage for today. 00:15:25.39\00:15:28.52 Deuteronomy 4:22, "But I must die in this land, 00:15:28.56\00:15:32.59 I must not cross over the Jordan, 00:15:32.63\00:15:36.00 but you shall cross over and possess the good land." 00:15:36.03\00:15:39.57 So takeaway number one, learn from other's mistakes. 00:15:39.60\00:15:43.77 Moses couldn't cross over the Jordan, 00:15:43.81\00:15:45.54 we're gonna study this in a future lesson. 00:15:45.57\00:15:47.91 What was the sin of Moses 00:15:47.94\00:15:49.28 as far as when he struck the rock 00:15:49.31\00:15:51.38 instead of speaking to the rock as the Lord had commanded him. 00:15:51.41\00:15:55.72 And that sin cost him dearly. 00:15:55.75\00:15:58.55 Learn from other's mistakes, sin has consequences. 00:15:58.59\00:16:02.62 Learn what others seek to teach you 00:16:02.66\00:16:04.93 and learn from other people's example. 00:16:04.96\00:16:07.03 If someone speaks into your life or someone, 00:16:07.06\00:16:09.20 you watch someone in an example, 00:16:09.23\00:16:11.53 learn from others mistakes. 00:16:11.57\00:16:13.70 Let's read the next verses, Deuteronomy 4:23-24. 00:16:13.74\00:16:18.57 "Take heed to yourselves, 00:16:18.61\00:16:20.68 lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God 00:16:20.71\00:16:24.01 which He made with you, 00:16:24.05\00:16:25.38 and make for yourselves a carved image," 00:16:25.41\00:16:27.58 He's cautioning them against idolatry, 00:16:27.62\00:16:30.89 "in the form of anything which the Lord 00:16:30.92\00:16:32.59 your God has forbidden you. 00:16:32.62\00:16:33.96 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, 00:16:33.99\00:16:36.66 a jealous God." 00:16:36.69\00:16:38.23 Take away number two, remember the covenant with your God. 00:16:38.26\00:16:42.73 Don't forget. 00:16:42.76\00:16:44.20 The Sinaitic covenant, 00:16:44.23\00:16:45.57 of course, was made in Exodus 19-24, 00:16:45.60\00:16:48.40 the heart of that being the Ten Commandments, 00:16:48.44\00:16:51.11 we see God's proposal of covenant with Israel. 00:16:51.14\00:16:54.51 We see Israel's acceptance of the covenant, 00:16:54.54\00:16:56.98 all that the Lord has said, we will do. 00:16:57.01\00:17:00.22 We see the preparation made to receive the covenant 00:17:00.25\00:17:03.59 and the proclamation of the covenant, 00:17:03.62\00:17:05.29 the heart of that, of course, being God's Ten Commandments, 00:17:05.32\00:17:07.89 the 10 promises of love that He gives to you and to me. 00:17:07.92\00:17:12.16 We see the covenant principles explained, 00:17:12.19\00:17:14.36 and then in Exodus 24, 00:17:14.40\00:17:16.03 the ratification of a covenant with blood. 00:17:16.06\00:17:20.00 We see God's Word and His Ten Commandment law, 00:17:20.04\00:17:22.90 the beginning of it was 00:17:22.94\00:17:24.27 what the caution against idolatry? 00:17:24.31\00:17:25.74 Commandment number one, 00:17:25.77\00:17:27.11 you shall have no other gods before Me. 00:17:27.14\00:17:29.01 Commandment number two, 00:17:29.04\00:17:30.38 you shall not make for yourself, 00:17:30.41\00:17:32.28 any graven image, 00:17:32.31\00:17:34.15 any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, 00:17:34.18\00:17:36.99 or That is in the earth beneath, 00:17:37.02\00:17:38.35 or that is in the water under the earth. 00:17:38.39\00:17:41.06 You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them, why? 00:17:41.09\00:17:45.36 "For I the Lord your God am a jealous God." 00:17:45.39\00:17:49.90 He told them this at the Ten Commandments 00:17:49.93\00:17:51.60 almost 40 years before, 00:17:51.63\00:17:53.44 and then He reminds them again, 00:17:53.47\00:17:56.50 beware, remember the covenant with the Lord your God. 00:17:56.54\00:18:01.21 Let's read verse 25, Deuteronomy 4:25, 00:18:01.24\00:18:04.71 "When you beget children and grandchildren 00:18:04.75\00:18:07.52 and have grown old in the land," 00:18:07.55\00:18:09.48 so this is moving down generations, 00:18:09.52\00:18:12.45 "and act corruptly." 00:18:12.49\00:18:14.36 So remember before he said, remember the covenant 00:18:14.39\00:18:16.46 and do not step into idol worship, 00:18:16.49\00:18:18.03 and now what's he's saying? 00:18:18.06\00:18:20.70 You're gonna step into idol worship, 00:18:20.73\00:18:22.76 "And you make a carved image in the form of anything, 00:18:22.80\00:18:26.57 and do evil in the sight of the Lord your God 00:18:26.60\00:18:28.54 to provoke Him to anger." 00:18:28.57\00:18:31.34 Takeaway number three, 00:18:31.37\00:18:32.81 foreknowledge does not mitigate free choice. 00:18:32.84\00:18:37.05 So in other words, God knew 00:18:37.08\00:18:39.31 that they were gonna step into idolatry. 00:18:39.35\00:18:40.85 God knew they were gonna forsake the covenant. 00:18:40.88\00:18:43.05 God knew they were gonna to forsake Him. 00:18:43.08\00:18:45.25 But yet they still had free choice, 00:18:45.29\00:18:46.89 they still had the choice 00:18:46.92\00:18:48.29 whether they were gonna step into idolatry or not. 00:18:48.32\00:18:50.79 God knows the future. Yes. 00:18:50.83\00:18:52.89 But He does not force us to choose. 00:18:52.93\00:18:55.26 I think about Daniel 2, Daniel 7, Daniel 8, 00:18:55.30\00:18:58.00 and the rise and fall of kingdoms, Babylon, 00:18:58.03\00:19:01.80 Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome and we see that. 00:19:01.84\00:19:05.24 We see that God had foreknowledge 00:19:05.27\00:19:07.21 of what was going to happen in the future, 00:19:07.24\00:19:09.64 but yet there still is free choice. 00:19:09.68\00:19:11.41 We see Jesus when He walked this earth 00:19:11.45\00:19:13.72 talking to Peter and what did He say? 00:19:13.75\00:19:15.35 Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times. 00:19:15.38\00:19:19.29 Now does that mean when it actually happened? 00:19:19.32\00:19:21.06 Did Peter have a choice? 00:19:21.09\00:19:22.42 Of course, he had a choice. 00:19:22.46\00:19:23.79 But foreknowledge does not mitigate free choice. 00:19:23.83\00:19:25.83 Peter still had a choice, but God knew 00:19:25.86\00:19:28.16 what choice Peter was going to make. 00:19:28.20\00:19:31.87 And, of course, I love the scripture 00:19:31.90\00:19:33.23 Ryan referenced this already, 2 Peter 3:9. 00:19:33.27\00:19:35.94 "God is not willing that any should perish, 00:19:35.97\00:19:37.91 but that all should come to repentance." 00:19:37.94\00:19:40.44 God wants to save everyone, 00:19:40.48\00:19:42.01 but yet not everyone won't be saved, 00:19:42.04\00:19:43.91 and why is that? 00:19:43.95\00:19:45.28 Because we all have free choice. 00:19:45.31\00:19:48.05 To make that choice to accept Him, 00:19:48.08\00:19:50.29 come to Him in repentance, 00:19:50.32\00:19:52.05 receive His forgiveness or to refuse them. 00:19:52.09\00:19:55.76 Deuteronomy 4:26, 00:19:55.79\00:19:58.29 "I call heaven and earth 00:19:58.33\00:19:59.83 to witness against you this day, 00:19:59.86\00:20:02.63 that you will soon utterly perish from the land 00:20:02.66\00:20:05.07 which you cross over the Jordan to possess, 00:20:05.10\00:20:07.94 you will not long prolong your days in it, 00:20:07.97\00:20:10.84 but will be utterly destroyed." 00:20:10.87\00:20:13.31 Now this is what we call a rib in the Hebrew. 00:20:13.34\00:20:16.61 Okay, so a rib is a God's covenant lawsuit. 00:20:16.64\00:20:21.58 It's God taking legal action against His people 00:20:21.62\00:20:25.05 because of their failure to keep the covenant. 00:20:25.09\00:20:28.02 There are several ribs in scripture. 00:20:28.06\00:20:29.72 If you read Isaiah Chapter 1, 00:20:29.76\00:20:31.29 you see a rib, God's covenant lawsuit. 00:20:31.33\00:20:34.76 If you read Acts Chapter 7, 00:20:34.80\00:20:37.00 Stephen, right before his stoning, 00:20:37.03\00:20:39.50 he recounts the history of Israel 00:20:39.53\00:20:41.47 and then what happens that he pronounces this rib 00:20:41.50\00:20:44.27 God's lawsuit against the people. 00:20:44.31\00:20:47.34 This is a Jewish nation 00:20:47.38\00:20:48.71 for their failure to keep the covenant. 00:20:48.74\00:20:52.35 And here in Deuteronomy 4:26 is a rib, 00:20:52.38\00:20:54.88 God calling heaven and earth 00:20:54.92\00:20:58.12 as witnesses against the people. 00:20:58.15\00:21:01.52 Now with ancient Near Eastern kings, say, 00:21:01.56\00:21:04.79 a Hittite emperor, 00:21:04.83\00:21:06.16 when they would make a political treaty 00:21:06.19\00:21:07.63 with a lesser ruler, 00:21:07.66\00:21:09.00 they would always invoke their gods, 00:21:09.03\00:21:11.03 as a witness to emphasize that any violation 00:21:11.07\00:21:13.84 of the agreement will be noticed and punished, 00:21:13.87\00:21:15.44 but you notice here God does not invoke any other lesser god 00:21:15.47\00:21:18.07 because our God is the One True God, 00:21:18.11\00:21:20.88 what does he call the King of kings 00:21:20.91\00:21:22.54 and the Lord of Lords? 00:21:22.58\00:21:23.95 He calls heaven and earth as His witness against this. 00:21:23.98\00:21:29.92 And what's takeaway number four from this? 00:21:29.95\00:21:31.95 God means what He says, He's King of kings, 00:21:31.99\00:21:35.02 and He's Lord of lords. 00:21:35.06\00:21:36.39 He's the Creator, the Sustainer, God over all. 00:21:36.42\00:21:39.56 It is not a light thing to enter into covenant 00:21:39.59\00:21:42.86 with Him, meaning, God is love. 00:21:42.90\00:21:46.03 Yes, but God is also just, and it is not a light thing 00:21:46.07\00:21:51.27 to enter into covenant. 00:21:51.31\00:21:52.64 The next verse, we're in Deuteronomy 4:27-28. 00:21:52.67\00:21:56.01 "And the Lord will scatter you among the peoples." 00:21:56.04\00:21:58.48 This is because remember, 00:21:58.51\00:21:59.85 they had broken the covenant or they will, 00:21:59.88\00:22:02.15 this is future, they will break the covenant. 00:22:02.18\00:22:04.95 "The Lord will scatter you among the peoples, 00:22:04.99\00:22:06.96 and you will be left few in number 00:22:06.99\00:22:09.39 among the nations where the Lord would drive you. 00:22:09.42\00:22:11.79 And there you will serve gods the work of men's hands, 00:22:11.83\00:22:15.36 wood and stone, 00:22:15.40\00:22:16.73 which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell." 00:22:16.77\00:22:19.90 Takeaway number five, sin, it has consequences. 00:22:19.93\00:22:24.27 The wages of sin is death, 00:22:24.31\00:22:25.64 but the gift of God is eternal life 00:22:25.67\00:22:28.14 in Christ Jesus, our Lord. 00:22:28.18\00:22:29.81 Their idolatry led to their scattering. 00:22:29.84\00:22:33.35 It's a direct consequence. 00:22:33.38\00:22:35.12 They stepped out in idol worship. 00:22:35.15\00:22:36.65 God said, remember My covenant they said, 00:22:36.69\00:22:38.25 we're doing our own thing. 00:22:38.29\00:22:39.62 They stepped out in idol worship, 00:22:39.65\00:22:41.29 and then what happened? 00:22:41.32\00:22:42.66 They were scattered. 00:22:42.69\00:22:44.03 Their idolatry led to their scattering, 00:22:44.06\00:22:45.69 sin has consequences. 00:22:45.73\00:22:47.23 Takeaway number six, be careful what you wish for, 00:22:47.26\00:22:51.13 for you might receive what you asked. 00:22:51.17\00:22:53.54 They wanted idolatry, 00:22:53.57\00:22:55.90 they stepped into idolatry and what happened? 00:22:55.94\00:22:58.71 They got their wish, abandoned in a foreign country, 00:22:58.74\00:23:02.14 they would have to worship other idols, 00:23:02.18\00:23:05.28 they wanted idols and idols is what they got. 00:23:05.31\00:23:08.02 Verse 29, Deuteronomy 4:29. 00:23:08.05\00:23:10.82 "But from there," this is where they're scattered. 00:23:10.85\00:23:12.82 This is the place of oppression. 00:23:12.85\00:23:14.19 This is the place of judgment. 00:23:14.22\00:23:15.69 This is the place of their consequences. 00:23:15.72\00:23:17.73 "You will seek the Lord your God, 00:23:17.76\00:23:20.36 and you will find Him 00:23:20.40\00:23:22.43 if you seek Him with all your heart 00:23:22.46\00:23:24.00 and with all your soul." 00:23:24.03\00:23:25.37 Takeaway number seven, 00:23:25.40\00:23:26.74 trials work redemptively in our lives. 00:23:26.77\00:23:29.47 If we turn to God through them, so in their place of captivity, 00:23:29.50\00:23:32.74 in their place of need, they turned to God. 00:23:32.77\00:23:35.61 God used that trial 00:23:35.64\00:23:37.11 to work redemptively in their life. 00:23:37.15\00:23:38.85 Takeaway number eight. 00:23:38.88\00:23:40.22 Whenever you seek God, He will be found. 00:23:40.25\00:23:43.59 Jonah sought Him from the belly of a fish. 00:23:43.62\00:23:45.42 Elijah sought Him from the wilderness 00:23:45.45\00:23:47.02 after running from a woman. 00:23:47.06\00:23:48.56 Esther sought Him from the middle of a palace 00:23:48.59\00:23:50.93 scared for her life. 00:23:50.96\00:23:52.46 The thief sought Him as both the sinner and the Savior 00:23:52.49\00:23:55.56 hung upon across. 00:23:55.60\00:23:57.23 The paralytic sought Him from the depths of the bed. 00:23:57.27\00:23:59.40 Nicodemus sought Him by night. 00:23:59.43\00:24:01.17 Zacchaeus sought Him from a tree. 00:24:01.20\00:24:02.67 The woman of Samaria sought Him 00:24:02.70\00:24:04.14 by a well and they all found Him. 00:24:04.17\00:24:07.61 Verse 30, "When you are in distress, 00:24:07.64\00:24:09.58 and all these things come upon you in the latter days, 00:24:09.61\00:24:12.01 when you turn to the Lord your God and obey His voice, 00:24:12.05\00:24:15.48 He will not forsake you nor destroy you, 00:24:15.52\00:24:18.25 nor forget the covenant He made to your fathers." 00:24:18.29\00:24:21.99 Takeaway number nine, repentance is God given. 00:24:22.02\00:24:26.70 And finally, takeaway number 10, 00:24:26.73\00:24:28.43 our Lord, Jehovah God is merciful and forgiving. 00:24:28.46\00:24:33.54 So they went into captivity, 00:24:33.57\00:24:35.84 they were going to go into captivity 00:24:35.87\00:24:37.57 because of their idolatry, 00:24:37.61\00:24:38.97 but God would redeem them and He's merciful. 00:24:39.01\00:24:41.54 Amen. 00:24:41.58\00:24:42.91 Ten takeaways in 10 minutes, that's talent. 00:24:42.94\00:24:46.05 Praise the Lord. 00:24:46.08\00:24:47.52 Great, great message. 00:24:47.55\00:24:48.88 We're gonna take a break, and we'll be right back. gonna kick it to Pastor John Lomacang 00:25:29.02\00:25:31.36 for Tuesday's lesson. 00:25:31.39\00:25:32.83 That's right, and I'll have a lesson 00:25:32.86\00:25:34.36 I'm going to say a word 00:25:34.40\00:25:35.73 that you've never heard before, Teshuvah. 00:25:35.76\00:25:38.93 That's a word you'll find out what that means just a moment. 00:25:38.97\00:25:41.70 This is Tuesday's lesson. 00:25:41.74\00:25:43.44 And we have enjoyed the study of the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:25:43.47\00:25:46.57 So what does teshuvah mean? 00:25:46.61\00:25:49.44 In the Hebrew it means return, literally to return. 00:25:49.48\00:25:54.18 But it's also used for the word repentance. 00:25:54.22\00:25:58.35 So teshuvah depending on the context 00:25:58.39\00:26:01.56 of what the story is referring to. 00:26:01.59\00:26:04.26 And in Deuteronomy 30:1-10, 00:26:04.29\00:26:07.83 the Lord is outlining all of the benefits 00:26:07.86\00:26:11.33 to those who return. 00:26:11.37\00:26:13.17 No, it's amazing that we are so paralleled 00:26:13.20\00:26:15.50 and I think you may have talked about this one of the lessons, 00:26:15.54\00:26:17.34 Jill, and I think all of our panelists 00:26:17.37\00:26:19.57 at one point or another mentioned how, 00:26:19.61\00:26:21.98 in a great degree we parallel the children of Israel 00:26:22.01\00:26:25.15 in so many ways. 00:26:25.18\00:26:26.72 As a matter of fact, go to 1 Corinthians Chapter 10. 00:26:26.75\00:26:29.95 This is not a part of my notes, 00:26:29.98\00:26:31.55 but the Lord just tapped me on my forehead 00:26:31.59\00:26:34.09 and gave me this understanding. 00:26:34.12\00:26:35.86 Here 1 Corinthians Chapter 10. 00:26:35.89\00:26:37.93 We read the words of the Apostle Paul, 00:26:37.96\00:26:40.10 and listen to what he says about the children of Israel. 00:26:40.13\00:26:43.87 Here it is. 00:26:43.90\00:26:45.73 1 Corinthians Chapter 10, the Bible says, 00:26:45.77\00:26:49.90 verse 1, "Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware 00:26:49.94\00:26:53.61 that all our fathers were under the cloud, 00:26:53.64\00:26:55.48 and all passed through the sea, 00:26:55.51\00:26:57.45 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 00:26:57.48\00:27:01.18 all ate the same spiritual food, 00:27:01.22\00:27:03.12 and all drank the same spiritual drink. 00:27:03.15\00:27:06.09 For they drank of that spiritual Rock 00:27:06.12\00:27:08.69 that follow them, and that Rock was Christ." 00:27:08.72\00:27:11.23 Notice the uniformity, all, all, all, 00:27:11.26\00:27:14.20 they had all things in common. 00:27:14.23\00:27:15.70 If the story stopped, 00:27:15.73\00:27:17.07 there would have been a great story would have said, 00:27:17.10\00:27:18.43 you know, that's what we want to be all of us 00:27:18.47\00:27:20.94 having all things in common. 00:27:20.97\00:27:22.40 Now that may be the ultimate aim 00:27:22.44\00:27:24.07 of the Christian, 00:27:24.11\00:27:25.44 but we've got to get past ourselves. 00:27:25.47\00:27:27.38 Here's a statement I want to make. 00:27:27.41\00:27:29.81 It took one day to get the Israelites out of Egypt. 00:27:29.84\00:27:34.32 It took 40 years to get Egypt out of Israel. 00:27:34.35\00:27:38.19 That's the reality of the story. 00:27:38.22\00:27:40.29 So that's what happens. 00:27:40.32\00:27:41.66 You may come to the Lord today and say, 00:27:41.69\00:27:43.12 "I'm so excited, I just got baptized, 00:27:43.16\00:27:45.13 I've joined the church. 00:27:45.16\00:27:46.80 All my old life is behind me." 00:27:46.83\00:27:49.33 Not, the Lord has forgiven your sins. 00:27:49.36\00:27:52.30 That's justification, 00:27:52.33\00:27:53.67 but now you enter into a journey 00:27:53.70\00:27:55.14 called sanctification. 00:27:55.17\00:27:56.81 And sanctification, in short, 00:27:56.84\00:27:58.67 is like being cut off of a tree being put on a sanding block, 00:27:58.71\00:28:02.81 you're gonna be chiseled, axed, cut, saw, 00:28:02.84\00:28:05.28 you're gonna be minced down. 00:28:05.31\00:28:06.92 Now when the product is done, you'll be very expensive. 00:28:06.95\00:28:09.78 You'll be put on display, God will say, 00:28:09.82\00:28:12.12 see what I made out of just a tree. 00:28:12.15\00:28:14.59 You know, the beautiful thing about God, 00:28:14.62\00:28:16.06 He promises that He who has begun 00:28:16.09\00:28:17.89 a good work will complete it. 00:28:17.93\00:28:21.40 And then the Apostle John says, 00:28:21.43\00:28:23.67 "It has not yet been revealed what we shall be." 00:28:23.70\00:28:26.10 But we do know that when He is revealed, 00:28:26.13\00:28:28.37 we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 00:28:28.40\00:28:32.07 Can you imagine a tree becomes a $30,000 desk? 00:28:32.11\00:28:36.31 How does that happen? 00:28:36.34\00:28:37.85 Well, God can take all of us, 00:28:37.88\00:28:41.65 and turn us into saints. 00:28:41.68\00:28:44.49 That can sit on His throne with Him 00:28:44.52\00:28:47.46 and never have to worry about starvation, 00:28:47.49\00:28:50.03 health reform, diet reform, dress reform, 00:28:50.06\00:28:53.50 never have to worry about any reform. 00:28:53.53\00:28:55.40 And we don't have to worry about 00:28:55.43\00:28:56.77 being even put into an institution 00:28:56.80\00:28:58.27 because sometimes the church represents 00:28:58.30\00:29:01.54 an insane asylum. 00:29:01.57\00:29:04.51 But God looks at us and says, 00:29:04.54\00:29:06.78 "If you would just return to Me, 00:29:06.81\00:29:10.18 I could do amazing things, but it's your choice." 00:29:10.21\00:29:14.42 You could continue down the road of destruction, 00:29:14.45\00:29:16.99 but if you simply return to Me, 00:29:17.02\00:29:18.99 if you get back on the pedestal, 00:29:19.02\00:29:21.72 where as the potter, 00:29:21.76\00:29:23.16 I can spin you and even though you are leaking 00:29:23.19\00:29:26.06 in the hand of the potter, 00:29:26.09\00:29:27.43 please let Me keep spinning you 00:29:27.46\00:29:29.16 and I'll close up the gaps in your life 00:29:29.20\00:29:31.97 and make you a masterpiece. 00:29:32.00\00:29:34.44 It's so beautiful in 1 Corinthians Chapter 15, 00:29:34.47\00:29:37.17 where the Bible talks about when this day is going to come, 00:29:37.21\00:29:40.38 how God is going to present us through Jesus Christ. 00:29:40.41\00:29:44.75 Jesus is going to present to His Father, 00:29:44.78\00:29:47.15 the kingdom from all of those who simply decided to return. 00:29:47.18\00:29:51.95 Here's what the Bible says in 1 Corinthians Chapter 15 00:29:51.99\00:29:54.52 starting in verse 22. 00:29:54.56\00:29:56.96 "For as in Adam all die, 00:29:56.99\00:30:00.23 even so in Christ all shall be made alive." 00:30:00.26\00:30:02.73 Notice there is no third category. 00:30:02.76\00:30:04.87 Can I say like one of our prior programs, 00:30:04.90\00:30:06.70 no middle ground. 00:30:06.74\00:30:08.40 Okay, there's no third category, 00:30:08.44\00:30:10.17 either you are alive in Christ or you are dead in Adam, 00:30:10.21\00:30:13.81 but until we are alive in Christ, 00:30:13.84\00:30:15.71 we are all a part of, get this, 00:30:15.74\00:30:18.61 The Adam's Family. 00:30:18.65\00:30:22.38 That's who we are. 00:30:22.42\00:30:23.85 We are... 00:30:23.89\00:30:25.75 I don't want to go down that path. 00:30:25.79\00:30:27.66 We could do some of the strangest 00:30:27.69\00:30:29.76 unexplainable things 00:30:29.79\00:30:31.39 before we are touched 00:30:31.43\00:30:32.76 by the transforming grace of Christ. 00:30:32.79\00:30:34.76 And I say transforming grace of Christ 00:30:34.80\00:30:36.46 because only Christ can transform. 00:30:36.50\00:30:38.97 2 Corinthians 5:17. 00:30:39.00\00:30:41.20 "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, 00:30:41.24\00:30:45.84 old things have passed away, 00:30:45.87\00:30:48.11 behold, all things have become new." 00:30:48.14\00:30:50.28 Now at the point of new, 00:30:50.31\00:30:52.95 you've heard the phrase new and improved, 00:30:52.98\00:30:55.28 we are new, but the Lord wants to improve 00:30:55.32\00:30:57.59 what He has made new. 00:30:57.62\00:30:59.05 That's where sanctification comes in. 00:30:59.09\00:31:00.96 So as we look at what Paul is going to add 00:31:00.99\00:31:05.36 to what Moses wrote in the Book of Deuteronomy, 00:31:05.39\00:31:08.60 we're gonna see that it's important that 00:31:08.63\00:31:10.60 the decisions we make 00:31:10.63\00:31:11.97 are decisions that we recognize, 00:31:12.00\00:31:13.90 have reciprocal consequences, meaning, 00:31:13.94\00:31:16.71 "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." 00:31:16.74\00:31:19.64 You do good, it will come back to you. 00:31:19.67\00:31:21.18 You do evil, it's going to come back to you. 00:31:21.21\00:31:23.21 Never send out something 00:31:23.24\00:31:24.58 that you don't want to come back. 00:31:24.61\00:31:26.21 That's what I've said to people 00:31:26.25\00:31:27.58 that when they get in controversies, 00:31:27.62\00:31:28.95 I say make your words soft and sweet 00:31:28.98\00:31:32.15 because you just might have to eat them. 00:31:32.19\00:31:34.86 So be careful. 00:31:34.89\00:31:36.22 Look at the four things 00:31:36.26\00:31:37.59 that the Lord wants to do for us, 00:31:37.63\00:31:38.96 actually, five, the lessons, 00:31:38.99\00:31:42.00 the blessings of returning to God. 00:31:42.03\00:31:43.67 So my first one, 00:31:43.70\00:31:45.03 I'm going to call it reciprocal return, 00:31:45.07\00:31:47.60 reciprocal return. 00:31:47.64\00:31:49.57 Malachi 3:7, "Return to Me, and I will return to you, 00:31:49.60\00:31:54.54 says the Lord, but you say in what way shall we return?" 00:31:54.58\00:31:59.38 Now let's not focus on the latter part, 00:31:59.41\00:32:01.28 but notice the reciprocal return. 00:32:01.32\00:32:03.32 If you returned to Me, I'll return to you. 00:32:03.35\00:32:06.22 Paul, the Apostle says, "If we draw near to God, 00:32:06.25\00:32:09.22 God will draw near to us." 00:32:09.26\00:32:10.89 There's a reciprocal blessing, 00:32:10.93\00:32:12.39 but notice this, the first step has to be ours. 00:32:12.43\00:32:15.76 The Lord never forces Himself, where He is not invited. 00:32:15.80\00:32:20.10 So the first lesson is reciprocal return. 00:32:20.14\00:32:22.84 Whatever you want God to do for you, 00:32:22.87\00:32:25.01 you must take the action 00:32:25.04\00:32:26.57 and accept the invitation to do what God is promised. 00:32:26.61\00:32:30.05 If you want God to hear your prayers when you speak, 00:32:30.08\00:32:33.31 you got to hear God's voice, when He speaks. 00:32:33.35\00:32:35.88 It's all reciprocal. 00:32:35.92\00:32:37.49 The second one, rejoicing return. 00:32:37.52\00:32:39.42 Isaiah 51:11, "So the ransomed of the Lord shall return, 00:32:39.45\00:32:44.09 and come to Zion with singing, 00:32:44.13\00:32:46.56 with everlasting joy on their heads, 00:32:46.59\00:32:49.03 they shall obtain joy and gladness, 00:32:49.06\00:32:51.33 sorrow and sighing shall flee away." 00:32:51.37\00:32:53.37 Why? Because they returned. 00:32:53.40\00:32:55.70 Sorrow and sighing is gonna flee away, 00:32:55.74\00:32:57.11 they're gonna be rejoicing, 00:32:57.14\00:32:58.67 they're gonna have everlasting joy. 00:32:58.71\00:33:00.08 Why? Because they returned. 00:33:00.11\00:33:01.48 Some people trying to find joy in the world, 00:33:01.51\00:33:03.45 you can't find it there. 00:33:03.48\00:33:05.71 You can try decade after decade to find joy in the world, 00:33:05.75\00:33:08.82 but it's nothing but one disappointment 00:33:08.85\00:33:10.59 after the other. 00:33:10.62\00:33:11.95 When you read the story of Hosea. 00:33:11.99\00:33:13.99 Hosea's wife, she was running, 00:33:14.02\00:33:16.06 she kept running, she kept running. 00:33:16.09\00:33:17.79 And the mercy of God said, 00:33:17.83\00:33:19.16 "I'm gonna make your run difficult. 00:33:19.19\00:33:20.63 I'm gonna put stumbling, 00:33:20.66\00:33:22.00 I'm gonna put things in your path. 00:33:22.03\00:33:23.37 You're gonna stumble. 00:33:23.40\00:33:24.73 I'm not gonna stop you, but I'm gonna make you stumble. 00:33:24.77\00:33:26.53 I'm going to make you go over one hurdle after the other." 00:33:26.57\00:33:28.27 But when you come back, 00:33:28.30\00:33:29.74 and finally realize that your journey is futile, 00:33:29.77\00:33:33.01 you'll say, "I'm gonna go back. 00:33:33.04\00:33:34.98 I'm gonna return. 00:33:35.01\00:33:36.34 I'm gonna teshuvah because it's better with me 00:33:36.38\00:33:39.25 then that it is with me now. 00:33:39.28\00:33:41.38 Takeaway number three, repentant return. 00:33:41.42\00:33:46.29 Jesus said to Peter, "But I have prayed for you 00:33:46.32\00:33:49.52 that your faith should not fail. 00:33:49.56\00:33:51.63 And when you have returned to Me, 00:33:51.66\00:33:54.53 or when you are converted, 00:33:54.56\00:33:56.23 strengthen the brethren." 00:33:56.26\00:33:58.00 Until you return to God, you are no use to anybody else. 00:33:58.03\00:34:02.07 And the fourth one, restorative return. 00:34:02.10\00:34:05.44 1 Peter 2:25, 00:34:05.47\00:34:07.38 "For you were like sheep gone astray, 00:34:07.41\00:34:10.25 but have now returned to the Shepherd 00:34:10.28\00:34:12.91 and Overseer of your soul." 00:34:12.95\00:34:15.25 See, you could be a sheep, 00:34:15.28\00:34:16.89 but a sheep that goes astray is a sheep that's lost. 00:34:16.92\00:34:20.49 But when the sheep returns, and this is beautiful, 00:34:20.52\00:34:22.92 the sheep that went astray has returned. 00:34:22.96\00:34:25.59 Now what's amazing about this 00:34:25.63\00:34:26.96 is sheep don't know the way of going, 00:34:27.00\00:34:28.33 don't know the way back. 00:34:28.36\00:34:29.70 How do they return? 00:34:29.73\00:34:31.07 Because they listen to the voice of the shepherd. 00:34:31.10\00:34:32.77 My sheep hear my voice. 00:34:32.80\00:34:34.67 When you hear God's Word, 00:34:34.70\00:34:36.10 the word you hear is the word 00:34:36.14\00:34:38.01 that's prompting you to return. 00:34:38.04\00:34:40.08 Never violate the invitation of God and expect blessing 00:34:40.11\00:34:44.88 to follow in your path. 00:34:44.91\00:34:46.61 Goodness and mercy shall follow me 00:34:46.65\00:34:48.45 all the days of my life if you return. 00:34:48.48\00:34:52.52 And the last one, reverential return, 00:34:52.55\00:34:56.49 we had reciprocal return, rejoicing return, 00:34:56.52\00:34:59.39 repentant return, restorative return, 00:34:59.43\00:35:02.10 and reverential return. 00:35:02.13\00:35:03.97 Luke 17:18, "When the Lord healed all the lepers, 00:35:04.00\00:35:08.44 He says, 'Where are the nine? 00:35:08.47\00:35:11.44 Were there not any found who returned 00:35:11.47\00:35:14.64 to give glory to God except this foreigner?'" 00:35:14.68\00:35:17.58 Yes. 00:35:17.61\00:35:18.95 When the foreigner returned, he turned to give glory to God, 00:35:18.98\00:35:22.45 he worshipped God, 00:35:22.48\00:35:24.12 he rejoiced because God had redeemed him. 00:35:24.15\00:35:26.49 Friends, you can have a teshuvah experience, 00:35:26.52\00:35:29.66 if you simply hear the voice 00:35:29.69\00:35:31.09 of the one extending the invitation. 00:35:31.13\00:35:34.46 Praise the Lord. 00:35:34.50\00:35:36.56 That's good stuff, Pastor. 00:35:36.60\00:35:37.93 I appreciate that very much. 00:35:37.97\00:35:39.30 I'm Kenny Shelton and have Wednesday's lesson. 00:35:39.33\00:35:42.27 I like it because it talks about With All Your Heart. 00:35:42.30\00:35:44.97 I think that's probably what we've all agreed 00:35:45.01\00:35:46.64 on the Sabbath School Panel. 00:35:46.68\00:35:48.01 What are we do in all of your hand find, 00:35:48.04\00:35:49.84 do it with all your mind. 00:35:49.88\00:35:51.21 This is what we give, 00:35:51.25\00:35:52.58 make a commitment to Jesus Christ. 00:35:52.61\00:35:54.35 It's got to be with all of our heart, which is, 00:35:54.38\00:35:57.62 you know, use on with the mind too. 00:35:57.65\00:35:59.42 So we've got to go all the way with Jesus. 00:35:59.45\00:36:02.56 Pastor John mentioned, I think Deuteronomy 30:1-10. 00:36:02.59\00:36:06.29 So I'm not gonna go through that 00:36:06.33\00:36:07.66 because he gave three beautiful points 00:36:07.70\00:36:09.73 was that repentance, returning, and what's required. 00:36:09.76\00:36:14.07 Praise God for that. 00:36:14.10\00:36:15.54 So as I studied this lesson on Wednesday's lesson, 00:36:15.57\00:36:18.57 With All Your Heart, 00:36:18.61\00:36:19.94 I see something to me is very important. 00:36:19.97\00:36:22.21 It reveals the grace, the knowledge, and the wisdom, 00:36:22.24\00:36:26.05 the goodness of God toward backsliders, 00:36:26.08\00:36:30.25 or sinners. 00:36:30.29\00:36:31.62 How He's so willing to take us back into the fold, 00:36:31.65\00:36:35.42 to love us, and to treat us when we truly repent, 00:36:35.46\00:36:38.76 treat us as though we've never sinned. 00:36:38.79\00:36:40.83 That was always just something just got me so excited. 00:36:40.86\00:36:43.30 I couldn't hardly stand it. 00:36:43.33\00:36:45.50 When God does something, He does it right. 00:36:45.53\00:36:48.74 Deuteronomy is bringing all this out 00:36:48.77\00:36:50.37 because God is still, He's calling 00:36:50.41\00:36:51.91 after all that they did, after all that we've done. 00:36:51.94\00:36:55.54 When He calls us back, 00:36:55.58\00:36:57.65 He puts His arms around us and it's like, 00:36:57.68\00:36:59.68 this never happened, 00:36:59.71\00:37:01.05 you know, in the human family sometime we're saying, 00:37:01.08\00:37:04.69 dad will say, now remember what you did, 00:37:04.72\00:37:06.86 you know, remember what... 00:37:06.89\00:37:08.26 Well, God doesn't do us that way. 00:37:08.29\00:37:10.33 It's just as though we've never sinned. 00:37:10.36\00:37:12.66 And I love that. 00:37:12.69\00:37:14.03 Romans 2:4, "Knowing that the goodness of God." 00:37:14.06\00:37:16.87 So we're talking about the grace and the goodness 00:37:16.90\00:37:18.83 of the Lord to backsliders and sinners. 00:37:18.87\00:37:21.57 "Knowing that the goodness of God 00:37:21.60\00:37:24.01 leadeth us to repentance?" 00:37:24.04\00:37:27.04 My, is that good? 00:37:27.08\00:37:28.41 Just think about Calvary. 00:37:28.44\00:37:29.78 Just think about all that God has done 00:37:29.81\00:37:31.95 and is doing and will do for us. 00:37:31.98\00:37:34.45 My how unworthy that we are, 00:37:34.48\00:37:35.82 but knowing that goodness does lead us to repentance, 00:37:35.85\00:37:39.19 want to be part of the family of God. 00:37:39.22\00:37:41.59 Repentance is the, you know, for sin 00:37:41.62\00:37:44.66 is the first fruits of the working 00:37:44.69\00:37:47.13 of the Holy Spirit in the life. 00:37:47.16\00:37:49.73 So there's fruits 00:37:49.76\00:37:51.10 when the Holy Spirit really comes in, 00:37:51.13\00:37:53.10 really begins to work, 00:37:53.13\00:37:54.80 you know, I think probably Israel 00:37:54.84\00:37:57.97 and I think about Israel, and maybe, 00:37:58.01\00:37:59.67 and I will say this in the right way, 00:37:59.71\00:38:01.51 at least we can understand that they were, 00:38:01.54\00:38:03.18 they were chastised more than they were praised. 00:38:03.21\00:38:06.35 Right. 00:38:06.38\00:38:08.55 Not that we need praise, but you follow what I mean, 00:38:08.58\00:38:10.45 it was in the constant, you know, relationship 00:38:10.49\00:38:13.02 what God had to continue to work with them, 00:38:13.05\00:38:14.86 continue to draw them back 00:38:14.89\00:38:16.22 because they chose their own way 00:38:16.26\00:38:17.79 brought out well here by everyone, 00:38:17.83\00:38:19.46 that we have that freedom to choose to do 00:38:19.49\00:38:21.73 what we would want to do. 00:38:21.76\00:38:23.30 Despite all that God had done, despite all that they had seen, 00:38:23.33\00:38:27.27 involved with right there, they chose to go against 00:38:27.30\00:38:31.47 what God had said in His Word. 00:38:31.51\00:38:33.17 And I can't look at them and say, 00:38:33.21\00:38:34.98 "Oh, well, that was them back then." 00:38:35.01\00:38:36.34 I look at it now and say, "You know what, 00:38:36.38\00:38:38.11 probably maybe we've all done it 00:38:38.15\00:38:39.48 since we've all sinned and come short 00:38:39.51\00:38:40.85 of the glory of God." 00:38:40.88\00:38:43.02 We knew better. 00:38:43.05\00:38:44.52 And sometimes we went ahead anyway, 00:38:44.55\00:38:46.79 but praise God, He's there for us. 00:38:46.82\00:38:48.96 Deuteronomy 4:7, it says, "Go back and look at that. 00:38:48.99\00:38:52.69 And we've all kind of read that, 00:38:52.73\00:38:54.20 I think in the lesson, and I think it's good. 00:38:54.23\00:38:56.26 It's good to go back. 00:38:56.30\00:38:57.63 And we will read it here in just a second. 00:38:57.67\00:38:59.00 But I thought how interesting. 00:38:59.03\00:39:00.50 Chapter 4 of Deuteronomy, 00:39:00.54\00:39:02.34 "God's people are encouraged once again, to do what? 00:39:02.37\00:39:05.17 Be obedient. 00:39:05.21\00:39:07.44 Do right. 00:39:07.48\00:39:08.94 Now I read one time, it says, do right because it's right. 00:39:08.98\00:39:11.75 Well, even a simple mind like me, I can get that. 00:39:11.78\00:39:14.38 I can get that. 00:39:14.42\00:39:15.78 Do right because it's right. 00:39:15.82\00:39:17.89 That's right. 00:39:17.92\00:39:19.25 Hard to understand those old theological argument 00:39:19.29\00:39:21.62 that we can get into about this, 00:39:21.66\00:39:22.99 yes, I've kind of heard that myself, 00:39:23.02\00:39:24.36 can you do right because it's right. 00:39:24.39\00:39:25.73 So it's the right thing to do. 00:39:25.76\00:39:27.10 Exercise just to make right decisions, 00:39:27.13\00:39:30.43 cleave unto the Lord's what the Bible tells us. 00:39:30.47\00:39:33.57 I want to read just a little something here 00:39:33.60\00:39:35.40 from Letter 112, written in 1909. 00:39:35.44\00:39:38.57 It says this, "We need to study, 00:39:38.61\00:39:40.64 I thought so interesting. 00:39:40.68\00:39:42.01 Since we're going through this study of Deuteronomy, 00:39:42.04\00:39:43.85 it says we need to study 00:39:43.88\00:39:45.21 and take time on Chapters 4 through 8, 00:39:45.25\00:39:47.72 interesting 4 through 5 in Deuteronomy, 00:39:47.75\00:39:50.49 that you may understand 00:39:50.52\00:39:51.85 what God requires of His ancient people, 00:39:51.89\00:39:55.26 that we might be holy people unto Himself. 00:39:55.29\00:40:00.26 If we believe the message God has given us, 00:40:00.30\00:40:03.30 you know, and, you know, I heard one guy say, 00:40:03.33\00:40:05.30 what is it Matthew 5:48, "Be you holy, 00:40:05.33\00:40:08.37 as your Father which are in heaven is holy." 00:40:08.40\00:40:13.01 And I heard a preacher say that, he said, 00:40:13.04\00:40:14.41 but that doesn't mean what he says. 00:40:14.44\00:40:17.38 It does mean what it says. 00:40:17.41\00:40:19.85 It does mean what it says here. 00:40:19.88\00:40:21.98 God had said, He wants us to be a holy people unto Himself. 00:40:22.02\00:40:27.16 In other words, do right because it's right. 00:40:27.19\00:40:30.43 And only the do writers 00:40:30.46\00:40:32.43 will make it into the kingdom of God. 00:40:32.46\00:40:34.23 So that's pretty simple. 00:40:34.26\00:40:35.60 We can all get that we want to do right. 00:40:35.63\00:40:37.40 You know, let's come to the point 00:40:37.43\00:40:38.77 I think sometime... 00:40:38.80\00:40:40.14 I love it when you're talking about the sheep, 00:40:40.17\00:40:41.50 the sheep hear the voice. 00:40:41.54\00:40:42.87 You know, the shepherd, they recognize it. 00:40:42.90\00:40:45.57 And they can tell a difference, 00:40:45.61\00:40:46.94 but it's coming to the point sometime, 00:40:46.98\00:40:48.44 I heard some guy saying this. 00:40:48.48\00:40:49.81 I don't know how long it's been, 00:40:49.84\00:40:51.18 but I don't want to be out of line here, 00:40:51.21\00:40:52.75 but I want to think about it. 00:40:52.78\00:40:54.12 It's come to the point here was that it's like the clown 00:40:54.15\00:40:59.05 is speaking to the goats. 00:40:59.09\00:41:01.36 Now some of you won't get that till tomorrow, 00:41:01.39\00:41:02.92 but write it down. 00:41:02.96\00:41:05.16 The clowns are speaking to the goats, 00:41:05.19\00:41:07.36 Jesus is speaking to the sheep. 00:41:07.40\00:41:10.00 All right. It takes a little while. 00:41:10.03\00:41:11.37 Okay, we'll get it. All right. 00:41:11.40\00:41:13.10 It takes a little bit, but kind of dissect it a little bit, 00:41:13.13\00:41:15.70 it makes us think, what's really taking place. 00:41:15.74\00:41:18.44 At least it does to me. 00:41:18.47\00:41:19.81 All right. 00:41:19.84\00:41:21.18 The word cleave we talked about here quickly, 00:41:21.21\00:41:22.74 word cleave used in Genesis 2:24 00:41:22.78\00:41:26.55 is talking about man and wife 00:41:26.58\00:41:27.92 and how God brought them together and said, 00:41:27.95\00:41:29.28 "I want you to cleave one to another." 00:41:29.32\00:41:32.05 And I found it just one liner, 00:41:32.09\00:41:34.59 I love in Steps to Christ, page 100. 00:41:34.62\00:41:36.96 It said something like this 00:41:36.99\00:41:38.33 "Relations between God and each soul 00:41:38.36\00:41:43.83 is distinct and full." 00:41:43.87\00:41:46.00 Oh, I love that, makes me want to get a hanky. 00:41:46.03\00:41:49.60 But really think about it. 00:41:49.64\00:41:50.97 Who are we? 00:41:51.01\00:41:52.57 Who are we that God can look down and He says, 00:41:52.61\00:41:54.81 "I want this relationship with you, 00:41:54.84\00:41:56.61 with your soul. 00:41:56.64\00:41:57.98 And I want it's so distinct and it's so full." 00:41:58.01\00:42:01.42 Because He knows me. 00:42:01.45\00:42:04.35 Have mercy. 00:42:04.39\00:42:05.72 And still yet, what's that song say? 00:42:05.75\00:42:07.76 He knows me but yet He loves me. 00:42:07.79\00:42:10.29 So Deuteronomy 4:7, "What nation is there so great, 00:42:10.33\00:42:13.43 who God has so nigh unto them, 00:42:13.46\00:42:15.23 and as our Lord our God is in all things 00:42:15.26\00:42:18.43 that were called upon him for?" 00:42:18.47\00:42:21.17 Well, is God great? 00:42:21.20\00:42:23.24 What nation is there so great? 00:42:23.27\00:42:26.54 What people are so great, none of us are good, 00:42:26.57\00:42:28.64 no, not one, but God says, 00:42:28.68\00:42:30.01 "I see a finished product and this is going to be good." 00:42:30.05\00:42:33.01 Patriarchs and Prophets, 465 says this. 00:42:33.05\00:42:36.35 It says, "Moses called their attention 00:42:36.38\00:42:38.15 to the 'day when they stood us 00:42:38.19\00:42:39.52 before the Lord on Mount Horeb.' 00:42:39.55\00:42:41.72 And they," notice that, 00:42:41.76\00:42:43.09 "and challenged the Hebrew host.'" 00:42:43.12\00:42:45.53 I don't know if you've been challenged 00:42:45.56\00:42:46.90 Hebrew hosts were challenged in covenant relationship 00:42:46.93\00:42:49.23 with God, He gave them the law. 00:42:49.26\00:42:52.30 And we're challenged today. 00:42:52.33\00:42:53.70 He's given us these laws. 00:42:53.74\00:42:55.47 He's given us those things to protect us 00:42:55.50\00:42:57.81 if we just simply obey His voice. 00:42:57.84\00:43:00.01 God, help us to obey Your voice 00:43:00.04\00:43:02.24 and not that of a stranger's voice, 00:43:02.28\00:43:04.35 if you know what I'm talking about. 00:43:04.38\00:43:06.01 So today, the challenge maybe is kind of like Israel, 00:43:06.05\00:43:09.15 you know, I think it's going to be repeated today. 00:43:09.18\00:43:11.99 You know, the ancient people, we think about, 00:43:12.02\00:43:14.39 you know, what God gives, 00:43:14.42\00:43:15.89 what God gives us to perfect us 00:43:15.92\00:43:17.86 and to prepare us for heaven is wiser, 00:43:17.89\00:43:20.16 and it's better and it's more humane 00:43:20.20\00:43:22.43 than any of the civilized nation 00:43:22.46\00:43:24.33 can write down on the books today 00:43:24.37\00:43:25.70 of all the laws of rule regulation to protect millions. 00:43:25.73\00:43:28.74 God just puts it down in little simple 10. 00:43:28.77\00:43:31.37 Now God's law bears the stamp of divinity. 00:43:31.41\00:43:34.14 I like this here. 00:43:34.18\00:43:35.51 So I'm gonna read, since I like it, 00:43:35.54\00:43:36.88 I'm gonna read it to you and maybe you'll like it too. 00:43:36.91\00:43:38.91 Okay, Manuscript 21, 1891 says this. 00:43:38.95\00:43:43.22 I've got to count on this. 00:43:43.25\00:43:44.65 It says, "The sinner may err," right? 00:43:44.69\00:43:47.56 The sinner... You've read it many times. 00:43:47.59\00:43:49.32 "The sinner may err, 00:43:49.36\00:43:50.69 but he's not cast off without mercy." 00:43:50.73\00:43:54.13 How many of us, many of us really operate 00:43:54.16\00:43:55.96 that way with one another in our own humaneness. 00:43:56.00\00:44:00.04 We may err, 00:44:00.07\00:44:01.70 but we're not cast off without mercy. 00:44:01.74\00:44:04.91 "His only hope, however," notice this, 00:44:04.94\00:44:07.88 "is repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ." 00:44:07.91\00:44:11.61 It's simple, the message doesn't change. 00:44:11.65\00:44:13.75 It's always the same. Praise God. 00:44:13.78\00:44:15.85 And as we talked about here. We have a choice. 00:44:15.88\00:44:18.42 And I'm gonna encourage you in the last minute 00:44:18.45\00:44:20.22 or so I have here to make the right choice. 00:44:20.26\00:44:22.36 Make that decision. 00:44:22.39\00:44:23.73 Do it today. 00:44:23.76\00:44:25.09 Today's the day of salvation. 00:44:25.13\00:44:26.76 That's the Book of Deuteronomy pointing out here. 00:44:26.80\00:44:30.17 We've strayed, God is calling us back, says, 00:44:30.20\00:44:33.84 "I love you with an everlasting love. 00:44:33.87\00:44:35.44 I'm not gonna leave you. I'm not gonna forsake you. 00:44:35.47\00:44:37.27 I'm there for you, 00:44:37.31\00:44:38.77 but you're gonna have to choose." 00:44:38.81\00:44:40.54 You're gonna have to choose which leader is going to be 00:44:40.58\00:44:42.38 because you're gonna fit under one or the other. 00:44:42.41\00:44:44.68 That's the only two, isn't that right, 00:44:44.71\00:44:46.05 the enemy or Christ and I choose 00:44:46.08\00:44:48.08 by the grace of God to get under Him. 00:44:48.12\00:44:49.52 I want to get my heart, my mind. 00:44:49.55\00:44:51.22 And my heart and my mind is right, 00:44:51.25\00:44:52.72 my actions will be right. 00:44:52.75\00:44:54.89 Every time if you get it in tune with the Word of God, 00:44:54.92\00:44:58.06 then our actions, our choices will be right. 00:44:58.09\00:45:00.80 God said before that many times 00:45:00.83\00:45:02.80 the blessings for being obedient 00:45:02.83\00:45:05.00 and he also set the curses out there 00:45:05.03\00:45:07.64 for the disobedience. 00:45:07.67\00:45:09.14 I always, I love that in the Word of God. 00:45:09.17\00:45:11.97 Some people said, "Well, that's too hard, 00:45:12.01\00:45:13.34 that's too difficult." 00:45:13.38\00:45:14.71 I'm glad that God made it plain, 00:45:14.74\00:45:16.51 so that I can know to make the right choice. 00:45:16.54\00:45:19.48 And then He says, "Kenny, 00:45:19.51\00:45:20.85 you can't really do it without me. 00:45:20.88\00:45:22.28 I can help you make that right choice. 00:45:22.32\00:45:24.05 I'll give you the strength. 00:45:24.09\00:45:25.42 I'll give you the courage and wish to do it." 00:45:25.45\00:45:26.92 It may seem overwhelming at times, 00:45:26.96\00:45:28.79 but I'm gonna to be with it always 00:45:28.82\00:45:30.26 because you know what? 00:45:30.29\00:45:31.63 I'd rather empty heaven 00:45:31.66\00:45:32.99 than have you to go down the tomb. 00:45:33.03\00:45:34.36 He feels that way about you today. 00:45:34.40\00:45:35.73 I know you feel that way about Him. 00:45:35.76\00:45:37.53 I love Deuteronomy. 00:45:37.57\00:45:39.47 Got it. All right, go for it... 00:45:39.50\00:45:41.94 And you know what so did Jesus. 00:45:41.97\00:45:43.64 He quoted Deuteronomy more than any other book. 00:45:43.67\00:45:47.64 I'm Shelley Quinn, and I have Thursday's lesson, 00:45:47.68\00:45:51.48 Repent and Be Converted. 00:45:51.51\00:45:54.45 You may never have accepted Christ as your Savior. 00:45:54.48\00:45:57.99 You may have been in the church for years, 00:45:58.02\00:46:01.36 but you find your backsliding 00:46:01.39\00:46:03.46 or you may just be having a rough day and you realize 00:46:03.49\00:46:07.03 I'm not surrender to the Lord, 00:46:07.06\00:46:10.80 Repent and Be Converted. 00:46:10.83\00:46:13.70 The word repent means to change your mind. 00:46:13.74\00:46:18.51 Think differently, and we're changing our mind 00:46:18.54\00:46:22.24 about the way we think about sin. 00:46:22.28\00:46:25.35 And the word converted means 00:46:25.38\00:46:29.42 turning away. 00:46:29.45\00:46:31.59 We turn away from sin, 00:46:31.62\00:46:35.49 and we turn toward God in faith. 00:46:35.52\00:46:39.63 So you put both of these together 00:46:39.66\00:46:42.86 and the Repent and Be Converted. 00:46:42.90\00:46:44.70 That's what repentance is. 00:46:44.73\00:46:46.40 It's a combination of the two. 00:46:46.43\00:46:48.80 It's a radical heart change. 00:46:48.84\00:46:52.31 And it's something that we are either turning to, 00:46:52.34\00:46:57.35 or returning to God. 00:46:57.38\00:47:00.78 In 2 Corinthians 7:10, 00:47:00.82\00:47:03.22 Paul writes to the Corinthians and he says, 00:47:03.25\00:47:05.69 "Godly sorrow produces repentance." 00:47:05.72\00:47:10.99 What is repentance? 00:47:11.03\00:47:12.36 You're gonna change the way you think about sin 00:47:12.39\00:47:15.10 leading to salvation, 00:47:15.13\00:47:17.13 not to be regretted, 00:47:17.17\00:47:19.77 but the sorrow of the world produces death. 00:47:19.80\00:47:22.54 So repentance, 00:47:22.57\00:47:25.57 if we have true godly sorrow, 00:47:25.61\00:47:31.01 godly sorrow brings hope for a change. 00:47:31.05\00:47:34.25 Isn't that true? 00:47:34.28\00:47:36.38 And we yearn when once we change our mind, 00:47:36.42\00:47:41.19 we're yearning to have that relationship 00:47:41.22\00:47:44.56 with the Lord, or to have it restored worldly sorrow. 00:47:44.59\00:47:49.06 What does that do? 00:47:49.10\00:47:50.43 It brings guilt. 00:47:50.47\00:47:51.80 It brings shame, sometimes self-pity, 00:47:51.83\00:47:55.00 and depression. 00:47:55.04\00:47:56.44 It brings wounded pride. 00:47:56.47\00:47:59.64 We repent, 00:47:59.67\00:48:01.01 when we initially accept Christ as their Savior. 00:48:01.04\00:48:05.18 But I'm just gonna tell you I find, 00:48:05.21\00:48:06.78 I'm repentant daily. 00:48:06.82\00:48:08.72 I have mean, and really, we have to continually repent 00:48:08.75\00:48:14.36 because it is so easy. 00:48:14.39\00:48:16.99 And I've even done it this week, 00:48:17.03\00:48:19.36 where I kind of turned... 00:48:19.39\00:48:23.30 Well, I didn't turn my back on the Lord, 00:48:23.33\00:48:25.17 but it turned my head away. 00:48:25.20\00:48:26.67 And I wasn't doing exactly 00:48:26.70\00:48:28.44 what was right and I had to repent. 00:48:28.47\00:48:30.81 So when we think 00:48:30.84\00:48:34.71 of repentance, 00:48:34.74\00:48:37.01 to me, that's how we maintain 00:48:37.05\00:48:39.41 the joy of our relationship with the Lord. 00:48:39.45\00:48:41.98 And I think, David, oh, Psalm 51 00:48:42.02\00:48:45.05 if you want to learn how to repent, 00:48:45.09\00:48:46.52 just go to Psalm 51. 00:48:46.55\00:48:47.89 And it's such a beautiful Psalms repentance. 00:48:47.92\00:48:51.66 And in Psalm 51:12-13, 00:48:51.69\00:48:55.16 after David has been saying, 00:48:55.20\00:48:57.07 "Oh, wash me thoroughly, and repeatedly." 00:48:57.10\00:48:59.70 And, you know, and I say in the blood of Jesus, 00:48:59.73\00:49:02.30 but he says in Psalm 51:12, 00:49:02.34\00:49:05.91 "Oh, Lord, restore to me the joy of Your salvation, 00:49:05.94\00:49:11.48 uphold me by Your generous Spirit." 00:49:11.51\00:49:16.55 Say that's, it does restore joy when we return. 00:49:16.58\00:49:21.59 And God can only guide us 00:49:21.62\00:49:24.93 and uphold us by His Holy Spirit. 00:49:24.96\00:49:27.53 So we need to ask Him for that. 00:49:27.56\00:49:30.00 But look what He says in verse 13. 00:49:30.03\00:49:32.93 "Then I will teach transgressors 00:49:32.97\00:49:38.11 Your ways, 00:49:38.14\00:49:39.84 and sinners shall be 00:49:39.87\00:49:42.94 converted to You." 00:49:42.98\00:49:46.31 In the Hebrew this is shub. 00:49:46.35\00:49:49.48 It's spelled S-H-U-B, but it's pronounced shub. 00:49:49.52\00:49:53.59 And shub means to be turned around. 00:49:53.62\00:49:56.93 So they're gonna turn away from sin 00:49:56.96\00:50:00.13 and they're gonna turn to God 00:50:00.16\00:50:02.73 because they see the joy that you are experiencing. 00:50:02.76\00:50:06.60 One thing I love about the Old Testament, 00:50:06.63\00:50:09.34 we talk about a patient God, 00:50:09.37\00:50:11.84 the God of hesed, the God of grace, 00:50:11.87\00:50:15.18 and love, and mercy. 00:50:15.21\00:50:18.31 He is constantly pleading 00:50:18.35\00:50:21.48 in the Old Testament. 00:50:21.52\00:50:24.35 Turn to Me, or return to Me, return to Me. 00:50:24.39\00:50:28.72 Zechariah 1:3 says, '"Return to Me, ' 00:50:28.76\00:50:31.26 says the Lord of hosts, 'and I will return to you, ' 00:50:31.29\00:50:36.53 says the lord of hosts.'" 00:50:36.56\00:50:37.90 And John's already pointed out this New Testament equivalent, 00:50:37.93\00:50:41.60 but I want to repeat it 00:50:41.64\00:50:44.21 because it's a beautiful promise. 00:50:44.24\00:50:47.24 In James 4:8, James says, 00:50:47.28\00:50:50.28 "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." 00:50:50.31\00:50:56.18 You know, my husband used to say that 00:50:56.22\00:51:00.16 what he wanted was a Damascun road experience. 00:51:00.19\00:51:06.13 He wanted God to prove that He was God, 00:51:06.16\00:51:09.20 he expected that light to shine down, 00:51:09.23\00:51:11.90 knock him off his high horse. 00:51:11.93\00:51:14.14 And it wasn't until he was studying on James 4:8. 00:51:14.17\00:51:18.87 It was like, "Oh, I need to turn to God." 00:51:18.91\00:51:23.01 That's when He's gonna come to me. 00:51:23.04\00:51:25.51 "Cleanse your hands, you sinners, 00:51:25.55\00:51:27.35 and purify your hearts, you double-minded." 00:51:27.38\00:51:30.42 See, God wants us to want, 00:51:30.45\00:51:34.22 the same thing He does. 00:51:34.26\00:51:35.59 And that is an intimate love relationship with us. 00:51:35.62\00:51:38.49 He wants us to draw near 00:51:38.53\00:51:42.80 and depend on Him in a humble way, 00:51:42.83\00:51:47.14 throughout the New Testament, not just the Old Testament, 00:51:47.17\00:51:50.61 but throughout the New Testament, 00:51:50.64\00:51:52.07 this idea of repentance is constantly repeated. 00:51:52.11\00:51:56.61 Jesus said in Matthew 18:3-4, 00:51:56.64\00:51:59.65 "Assuredly, I say to you, unless you be converted," 00:51:59.68\00:52:03.82 let's turn around, 00:52:03.85\00:52:05.99 "and become as little children." 00:52:06.02\00:52:08.76 What? 00:52:08.79\00:52:10.26 See, God's we're taught, 00:52:10.29\00:52:15.36 the whole purpose of bringing up a child 00:52:15.40\00:52:17.77 is to teach him to be independent. 00:52:17.80\00:52:20.20 And then, when it comes to the Lord, He's saying, 00:52:20.24\00:52:24.87 "My whole plan of salvation 00:52:24.91\00:52:26.78 is that you're totally dependent upon Me." 00:52:26.81\00:52:28.81 So Jesus said, "You've got to be 00:52:28.84\00:52:30.45 converted like a little child." 00:52:30.48\00:52:32.35 Turning to God in absolute dependence 00:52:32.38\00:52:36.85 on Him as your father. 00:52:36.89\00:52:39.92 And he says, "Unless you turn and be converted, 00:52:39.95\00:52:43.19 or convert and become as little children, 00:52:43.22\00:52:45.69 you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. 00:52:45.73\00:52:49.03 Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child 00:52:49.06\00:52:54.50 is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." 00:52:54.54\00:52:58.31 Humility, let me explain now. 00:52:58.34\00:53:02.68 We see in Philippians 2:5-8, let this mind be in you, 00:53:02.71\00:53:07.65 which was in Christ Jesus. 00:53:07.68\00:53:09.85 And it goes on explaining, He was God, 00:53:09.88\00:53:13.02 He came down and took on the flesh, 00:53:13.05\00:53:15.29 but He totally depended upon the Father. 00:53:15.32\00:53:21.26 See, that's what humility is, it's prideful when we think. 00:53:21.30\00:53:26.23 Oh, I don't need to pray about that. 00:53:26.27\00:53:27.60 I know what I need to do. 00:53:27.64\00:53:28.97 It's prideful when we decide to have our own way. 00:53:29.00\00:53:31.91 What's humility is to be depending upon the Father, 00:53:31.94\00:53:35.44 but the joy of repentance, listen to this. 00:53:35.48\00:53:38.95 Acts 3:19, "Repent therefore," 00:53:38.98\00:53:43.05 which means change your mind, "be converted, 00:53:43.08\00:53:46.39 turn away from sin, turn toward God." 00:53:46.42\00:53:50.49 So that here's the purpose, 00:53:50.53\00:53:52.89 why do we repent and be converted? 00:53:52.93\00:53:55.93 So that your sins may be blotted out like you said, 00:53:55.96\00:54:00.27 He's casting them, He's remembering them no more. 00:54:00.30\00:54:03.34 "So that times of refreshing 00:54:03.37\00:54:06.57 may come from the presence of the Lord." 00:54:06.61\00:54:09.61 When I do something wrong, 00:54:09.64\00:54:12.08 boy, it eats at me, nearly eats at me. 00:54:12.11\00:54:16.58 And I have to, you know, I don't want 00:54:16.62\00:54:18.35 to hurt somebody's feelings. 00:54:18.39\00:54:19.89 I don't want to do something wrong. 00:54:19.92\00:54:21.76 And when I realize I have, 00:54:21.79\00:54:23.46 it just eats me up inside until I repent, 00:54:23.49\00:54:27.56 till I confess my sin, and repent, 00:54:27.60\00:54:31.40 and that's when the time of refreshing comes. 00:54:31.43\00:54:35.20 John the Baptist had a ministry of repentance in Matthew 3 00:54:35.24\00:54:39.41 we see he saying, 00:54:39.44\00:54:40.78 "Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." 00:54:40.81\00:54:43.88 And he was the voice of the one crying 00:54:43.91\00:54:46.01 in the wilderness, prepare the way for the Lord. 00:54:46.05\00:54:49.45 And you know what? 00:54:49.48\00:54:50.82 All the little people are coming out there 00:54:50.85\00:54:53.66 and they got baptized, 00:54:53.69\00:54:55.86 but then all of a sudden John verse 7 says, 00:54:55.89\00:54:58.96 "He looks up, He sees the Pharisees 00:54:58.99\00:55:02.20 and Sadducees are coming. 00:55:02.23\00:55:04.17 And, you know, it says to them, 'Brood of vipers! 00:55:04.20\00:55:07.64 Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?'" 00:55:07.67\00:55:10.01 See, the Pharisees were rigid legalist 00:55:10.04\00:55:13.31 and they counted on the traditions of man 00:55:13.34\00:55:16.31 that nullified the Word of God. 00:55:16.34\00:55:18.25 Whereas the Sadducees were liberal compromisers 00:55:18.28\00:55:23.55 and they controlled the temple in the days of Jesus. 00:55:23.59\00:55:27.56 But both sects thought, hey, we're children of Abraham. 00:55:27.59\00:55:32.36 We don't need to repent. 00:55:32.39\00:55:34.73 And so Matthew 3:8, 00:55:34.76\00:55:38.60 John the Baptist continues, 00:55:38.63\00:55:41.07 after he calls them deadly snakes. 00:55:41.10\00:55:42.84 He says, "Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance." 00:55:42.87\00:55:47.28 See, true repentance Acts 5:31 says, 00:55:47.31\00:55:50.91 is granted by God, even that is not our work. 00:55:50.95\00:55:56.38 It's something God does in our heart, 00:55:56.42\00:55:58.62 but when we truly repent, 00:55:58.65\00:56:00.46 you'll see the fruits of repentance. 00:56:00.49\00:56:02.42 Amen. Amen. 00:56:02.46\00:56:03.79 Praise the Lord. 00:56:03.83\00:56:05.16 Well, let's get some closing thoughts 00:56:05.19\00:56:06.53 for today's lesson. 00:56:06.56\00:56:07.90 My lesson was Seek Me and Find Me. 00:56:07.93\00:56:09.26 Isaiah 55:6, "Seek the Lord while He may be found, 00:56:09.30\00:56:12.30 call upon Him while He is near." 00:56:12.33\00:56:15.07 So call upon the Lord today. 00:56:15.10\00:56:16.47 Amen. 00:56:16.50\00:56:17.84 When we return to God, Zechariah 9:12 says, 00:56:17.87\00:56:20.44 "The Lord will restore double to us." 00:56:20.48\00:56:24.45 And Israel, we're talking about here 00:56:24.48\00:56:25.81 the people mourn because of their sin 00:56:25.85\00:56:27.98 brought suffering upon themselves 00:56:28.02\00:56:29.78 and what everyone's brought out here. 00:56:29.82\00:56:31.42 True repentance is more than sorrow for sin. 00:56:31.45\00:56:34.36 It is a resolute turning from evil. 00:56:34.39\00:56:36.73 Absolutely. 00:56:36.76\00:56:38.09 We repent, change our mind, confess our sins, 00:56:38.13\00:56:40.33 He's faithful and just to forgive us of our sins. 00:56:40.36\00:56:42.50 And then we're converted, we turn toward Him. 00:56:42.53\00:56:45.27 And we get that time of refreshing. 00:56:45.30\00:56:47.00 Amen.
