a little bit of
subtle controversy

because in some
Christian circles,

there's a teaching
that God's law has been done

away with and now
we're no longer under law,

but we're under grace.

And even though the Bible says,

"You are no
longer under the law,

but under grace,"

many people don't
understand what that means.

And for the most part,

some Christians
believe that now we're living
00:03:36.44\00:03:38.61
in the Christian world and well,
00:03:38.65\00:03:40.72
God's law's done away with,
00:03:40.75\00:03:42.08
so therefore there
is no real standard.

Although they won't
say there's no standard,

they'll say, "We
have to be nice to people.
00:03:46.42\00:03:47.96
We won't kill, lie,
steal, cheat, commit adultery,

be a false witness, covet."
00:03:50.59\00:03:52.06
But there's an
underlying feeling that well,
00:03:52.09\00:03:54.56
when Jesus died, His
law was nailed to the cross
00:03:54.60\00:03:57.10
and now we are in the
dispensation of grace.

And so each one of
our panelists today

are going to talk
about this in various ways.

What does the Bible say

when it talks
about the law of God

and the grace of God?

But I want to just
start with the text

in Galatians 2:21.

The Apostle Paul makes
a very wonderful contrast

as he begins to focus
our lens on the beauty
00:04:20.62\00:04:24.43
of law and grace combined.
00:04:24.46\00:04:28.06
Galatians 2:21 we read,
00:04:28.10\00:04:31.77
"I do not set
aside the grace of God,
00:04:31.80\00:04:35.37
for if righteousness
comes through the law,
00:04:35.40\00:04:39.14
then Christ died in vain."
00:04:39.17\00:04:42.21
Beautiful passage and
standing all by itself,
00:04:42.24\00:04:45.48
it almost makes it
appear initially, Shelley,
00:04:45.51\00:04:48.38
that, well, since righteousness
does not come through the law,
00:04:48.42\00:04:52.25
we don't really need it.
00:04:52.29\00:04:53.76
But we find
passages in Scripture

that are somehow when you
put the entire picture together

like pieces in a puzzle,

all of a sudden it
starts to develop in a way that

makes it very, very clear.

There are those who look at

the violation of
the commandments of God

as the need to confess.

But then, at the same time,

in some of those
very same circles,
00:05:15.38\00:05:16.88
they will say, "Well, you know,
00:05:16.91\00:05:19.01
the law is love the Lord
your God with all your heart,
00:05:19.05\00:05:23.15
and then love your
neighbor as yourself.
00:05:23.18\00:05:25.92
And that's really
the only laws we have."

But that's not,
in fact, the case.
00:05:28.36\00:05:30.86
We could look at
the reality of sin.

Now, does sin
still exists. Oh, yeah.

Where there is no
law, there is no sin.

And I know that I'm going to

use a very basic
story to illustrate

and then dive into the
lesson on law and grace.

I was speeding through
the state of Indiana, 2006.

Somehow the
vehicle got away from me

87 miles an hour.

to clear up my dad's apartment.

He had passed away.

in the middle of the vehicle.

It was kind of the

curve coming down the hill,

there I saw a black
highway patrol in Indiana

sights on immediately.

And I thought to myself,
"He really wants to meet me."

over and he said,

you're going so fast?"

I was looking at my GPS.

That's grace.

Grace exists
because there is a law.

It is the gift of
God, not of works,

Now notice, it is a gift.

Grace is a gift.
Why is it a gift?

If you stood before a judge,

When we stand before
the God of the universe,

since we are saved

I want to tell you
when that officer let me go,

it was a long time

past the speed limit.

And then one patrolmen said,

he said, "Now, I in
the State of Illinois,

I don't want to tell you
this to have you get in trouble

because it's not a
hardened fast law."

But he said, "If you stay

within 10 miles
of the speed limit,

we'll give you a
little bit of grace.

But when you start
going way past that,

you know, it's
up to the officers

It's not in the law book that

The foundation of

lot of instructions.

the Book of the Law,

he is expanding what

this younger generation.

relationship, blessings,

the pathway to
blessings was obedience to God.

He is seeking...

God is seeking a
response from us.

His sovereignty, His love,
and that response is obedience.

he reminds them of God's grace,

God's law, how God saved them.

He redeemed them from Egypt.

He brought them

with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

So they have been
saved by grace, no doubt.

But God had done for them

what they
couldn't do for themselves.

Their response
of faith was to be

one of loyalty and love to God

and obedience that
was motivated by love.

So what Moses is
doing is reminding them.

Hey, God is faithful.

He keeps covenant with whom?

With those who
keep covenant with Him,

with those who walk in obedience

to His commandments.

And then He warns
them all these curses

are in the law for disobedience.

But let's look at

repeatedly telling them,

"If you want to be
blessed, observe this law,

obey this law."

He says, "Observe
all the words of the law

that are written in this book."

It's the book...

it the Book of the Law.

and he's describing idols

and pagan worships

and listen to what he says.

He said, "Hey, avoid these..."

verse 18, and
this is, where am I?

Deuteronomy 29:18,

"So that they may not
be among you" he said,

"avoid these idols
in this pagan worship.

So they may not be among you,

what cheap grace is.

People who think
that "God has saved me.

I'm under covenant.

I'll do whatever I want."

And Moses says,

"As though the drunkard could be

and His jealousy

So these curses for
breaking the covenant,

and grace provided them

the provision for
turning back to the Lord.

thoughts and imaginations.

God has set up a standard for us

so we can find our way,

our way to Jesus Christ,

so we can recognize our sins

overtake and destroy them.

In short, out of
love for His people,

God gave them His law

and obedience to
His law is for our good.

practical revelation.

In other words,

put flesh and bones.

Jesus Christ showed us

what the law
looks like in action.

And when he came to show us

looked like in action,

a lot of the religious leaders

Jesus comes
incarnate in the law,

We're looking at Jesus

There are many people
in the world that say,

So if you remove the law,
then obviously you remove sin.

we have the knowledge of sin.

So when you remove
law, you remove sin, okay,

can't transgress the law.

We're not saved by the law,

we want to keep that law.

And that launches us

In all of the Biblical message

"Oh, there's no
