Okay. 00:02:12.46\00:02:14.53 And the singer in Israel, Ryan Day. 00:02:14.56\00:02:16.00 Good to have you here, Ryan. 00:02:16.03\00:02:17.37 Always a blessing to be a part of this family 00:02:17.40\00:02:18.97 and today we're talking about the righteousness of Christ. 00:02:19.00\00:02:21.97 Okay, well praise the Lord. 00:02:22.00\00:02:23.57 Well, James, would you have our prayer for us this morning? 00:02:23.61\00:02:25.54 Absolutely. Let's pray. 00:02:25.57\00:02:27.31 Father in heaven, thank You so much again 00:02:27.34\00:02:29.14 for the opportunity to study Your Word. 00:02:29.18\00:02:32.08 And I ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit to teach us, 00:02:32.11\00:02:34.95 instruct us, to guide us. 00:02:34.98\00:02:36.62 Be with our viewers also, 00:02:36.65\00:02:37.99 we're excited about this lesson on law and grace. 00:02:38.02\00:02:40.86 And we just pray for Your blessing upon it. 00:02:40.89\00:02:42.59 We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:02:42.62\00:02:44.33 Amen. Amen. 00:02:44.36\00:02:46.39 You know, we talk about law and grace 00:02:46.43\00:02:47.90 and when I was reading through 00:02:47.93\00:02:50.93 what our good friend, Clifford Goldstein put together 00:02:50.97\00:02:53.44 on this topic, 00:02:53.47\00:02:54.80 it's been an exciting study thus far. 00:02:54.84\00:02:56.17 Yes, it has. 00:02:56.20\00:02:57.54 And this one is particularly interesting 00:02:57.57\00:02:59.31 because this is a topic of, 00:02:59.34\00:03:01.94 I would say subtle under lying controversy, 00:03:01.98\00:03:05.28 because if you ask a Christian, do they believe in God's law? 00:03:05.31\00:03:08.12 They may say yes. 00:03:08.15\00:03:09.78 Do they believe in God's grace? They may say yes. 00:03:09.82\00:03:13.25 Do we believe that God's law and grace 00:03:13.29\00:03:15.22 are combined together? 00:03:15.26\00:03:16.59 There you might get 00:03:16.62\00:03:17.96 a little bit of subtle controversy 00:03:17.99\00:03:19.93 because in some Christian circles, 00:03:19.96\00:03:22.06 there's a teaching that God's law has been done 00:03:22.10\00:03:24.33 away with and now we're no longer under law, 00:03:24.37\00:03:27.47 but we're under grace. 00:03:27.50\00:03:28.84 And even though the Bible says, 00:03:28.87\00:03:30.34 "You are no longer under the law, 00:03:30.37\00:03:31.71 but under grace," 00:03:31.74\00:03:33.07 many people don't understand what that means. 00:03:33.11\00:03:34.88 And for the most part, 00:03:34.91\00:03:36.41 some Christians believe that now we're living 00:03:36.44\00:03:38.61 in the Christian world and well, 00:03:38.65\00:03:40.72 God's law's done away with, 00:03:40.75\00:03:42.08 so therefore there is no real standard. 00:03:42.12\00:03:44.69 Although they won't say there's no standard, 00:03:44.72\00:03:46.39 they'll say, "We have to be nice to people. 00:03:46.42\00:03:47.96 We won't kill, lie, steal, cheat, commit adultery, 00:03:47.99\00:03:50.56 be a false witness, covet." 00:03:50.59\00:03:52.06 But there's an underlying feeling that well, 00:03:52.09\00:03:54.56 when Jesus died, His law was nailed to the cross 00:03:54.60\00:03:57.10 and now we are in the dispensation of grace. 00:03:57.13\00:04:00.54 And so each one of our panelists today 00:04:00.57\00:04:02.10 are going to talk about this in various ways. 00:04:02.14\00:04:04.74 What does the Bible say 00:04:04.77\00:04:06.47 when it talks about the law of God 00:04:06.51\00:04:08.41 and the grace of God? 00:04:08.44\00:04:10.08 But I want to just start with the text 00:04:10.11\00:04:11.55 in Galatians 2:21. 00:04:11.58\00:04:15.62 The Apostle Paul makes a very wonderful contrast 00:04:15.65\00:04:20.59 as he begins to focus our lens on the beauty 00:04:20.62\00:04:24.43 of law and grace combined. 00:04:24.46\00:04:28.06 Galatians 2:21 we read, 00:04:28.10\00:04:31.77 "I do not set aside the grace of God, 00:04:31.80\00:04:35.37 for if righteousness comes through the law, 00:04:35.40\00:04:39.14 then Christ died in vain." 00:04:39.17\00:04:42.21 Beautiful passage and standing all by itself, 00:04:42.24\00:04:45.48 it almost makes it appear initially, Shelley, 00:04:45.51\00:04:48.38 that, well, since righteousness does not come through the law, 00:04:48.42\00:04:52.25 we don't really need it. 00:04:52.29\00:04:53.76 But we find passages in Scripture 00:04:53.79\00:04:55.52 that are somehow when you put the entire picture together 00:04:55.56\00:04:59.73 like pieces in a puzzle, 00:04:59.76\00:05:01.46 all of a sudden it starts to develop in a way that 00:05:01.50\00:05:03.80 makes it very, very clear. 00:05:03.83\00:05:05.87 There are those who look at 00:05:05.90\00:05:08.00 the violation of the commandments of God 00:05:08.04\00:05:11.47 as the need to confess. 00:05:11.51\00:05:13.41 But then, at the same time, 00:05:13.44\00:05:15.34 in some of those very same circles, 00:05:15.38\00:05:16.88 they will say, "Well, you know, 00:05:16.91\00:05:19.01 the law is love the Lord your God with all your heart, 00:05:19.05\00:05:23.15 and then love your neighbor as yourself. 00:05:23.18\00:05:25.92 And that's really the only laws we have." 00:05:25.95\00:05:28.32 But that's not, in fact, the case. 00:05:28.36\00:05:30.86 We could look at the reality of sin. 00:05:30.89\00:05:32.99 Now, does sin still exists. Oh, yeah. 00:05:33.03\00:05:35.46 Where there is no law, there is no sin. 00:05:35.50\00:05:38.03 And I know that I'm going to 00:05:38.07\00:05:39.53 use a very basic story to illustrate 00:05:39.57\00:05:43.27 and then dive into the lesson on law and grace. 00:05:43.30\00:05:45.97 I was speeding through the state of Indiana, 2006. 00:05:46.01\00:05:51.18 Somehow the vehicle got away from me 00:05:51.21\00:05:54.55 and I was going 87 miles an hour. 00:05:54.58\00:05:57.15 And coming down a hill and I was going to New York 00:05:57.19\00:06:00.79 to clear up my dad's apartment. 00:06:00.82\00:06:02.19 He had passed away. 00:06:02.22\00:06:03.76 And this is before in dash GPSs. 00:06:03.79\00:06:06.19 So I had this big laptop in the middle of the vehicle. 00:06:06.23\00:06:10.00 And I was looking down as I had the... 00:06:10.03\00:06:12.67 There was a dongle you stuck outside the window, 00:06:12.70\00:06:14.77 this magnetic dongle. 00:06:14.80\00:06:16.14 It was kind of the receiver for the GPS 00:06:16.17\00:06:18.07 that was on the Rand McNally map. 00:06:18.11\00:06:19.51 That was this big computer program. 00:06:19.54\00:06:21.54 You young folks are really blessed to just have a phone. 00:06:21.58\00:06:24.51 And I didn't see it, but I was coming around a curve 00:06:24.55\00:06:26.21 and a big 18 wheeler to my right. 00:06:26.25\00:06:28.02 And as I came around the curve coming down the hill, 00:06:28.05\00:06:30.72 there I saw a black highway patrol in Indiana 00:06:30.75\00:06:33.79 and he put his sights on immediately. 00:06:33.82\00:06:35.19 And I thought to myself, "He really wants to meet me." 00:06:35.22\00:06:38.69 So he pulled me over and he said, 00:06:38.73\00:06:41.16 "Can you tell me why you're going so fast?" 00:06:41.20\00:06:43.93 And I said, "How fast was I going?" 00:06:43.97\00:06:45.33 He said, "I clocked you at 87." 00:06:45.37\00:06:47.64 He said, "Now, did you know you're going that fast?" 00:06:47.67\00:06:50.37 I said, "Honestly officer, I was looking at my GPS. 00:06:50.41\00:06:53.38 I didn't know that." 00:06:53.41\00:06:55.08 He said, "Registration license." 00:06:55.11\00:06:57.25 And he was very nice about it 00:06:57.28\00:06:58.95 and I had no reason not to be nice about it 00:06:58.98\00:07:01.65 because I was guilty as charged. 00:07:01.68\00:07:04.39 And I said "Okay," and he came back he said, 00:07:04.42\00:07:06.32 "Do you have your insurance card?" 00:07:06.35\00:07:08.09 I gave it to him. 00:07:08.12\00:07:09.46 He came back and he said, 00:07:09.49\00:07:10.83 "You know, where are you going?" 00:07:10.86\00:07:12.26 I said, "I'm on my way to New York. 00:07:12.29\00:07:13.63 My dad passed away. 00:07:13.66\00:07:15.00 I'm going to empty out his apartment." 00:07:15.03\00:07:16.36 He pulled his hat back and he said, "You know what? 00:07:16.40\00:07:21.10 I'm going to give you a break. 00:07:21.14\00:07:23.10 But could you just slow it down and we'll call it a day?" 00:07:23.14\00:07:27.31 That's grace. 00:07:27.34\00:07:29.41 Did he say, "You know because of you speeding 00:07:29.44\00:07:32.81 because of you, I'm just going to go ahead 00:07:32.85\00:07:34.78 and remove the speed limit? 00:07:34.82\00:07:36.15 You just peel out 00:07:36.18\00:07:37.52 and just go as fast as you'd like. 00:07:37.55\00:07:38.89 And everybody after you will no longer 00:07:38.92\00:07:40.86 have to abide by the law." 00:07:40.89\00:07:42.22 He didn't say that. 00:07:42.26\00:07:43.59 He said, "I'm going to give you a break today." 00:07:43.63\00:07:45.96 That's grace. 00:07:45.99\00:07:48.03 Grace exists because there is a law. 00:07:48.06\00:07:52.80 There is no need for grace if there was not a law. 00:07:52.83\00:07:56.37 So because there is grace, there is a law. 00:07:56.40\00:07:59.97 Look at Ephesians 2:8-9, this is wonderful. 00:08:00.01\00:08:04.15 Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace, 00:08:04.18\00:08:09.35 you have been saved through faith, 00:08:09.38\00:08:11.82 and that not of yourselves. 00:08:11.85\00:08:14.36 It is the gift of God, not of works, 00:08:14.39\00:08:17.49 lest anyone should boast." 00:08:17.53\00:08:19.69 Now notice, it is a gift. 00:08:19.73\00:08:21.33 Grace is a gift. Why is it a gift? 00:08:21.36\00:08:23.10 If you stood before a judge, and you knew you were guilty. 00:08:23.13\00:08:26.43 What would you ask for, justice or mercy? 00:08:26.47\00:08:29.24 You'll ask for mercy. 00:08:29.27\00:08:31.27 Now, if you stood before a judge 00:08:31.31\00:08:32.64 and you knew you were guilty 00:08:32.67\00:08:34.01 and you ask for justice, he'll say, "You want justice? 00:08:34.04\00:08:35.91 Throw him in jail. We have him on camera. 00:08:35.94\00:08:38.91 We have him on camera speeding. 00:08:38.95\00:08:40.62 You want justice, go to jail." 00:08:40.65\00:08:42.58 When we stand before the God of the universe, 00:08:42.62\00:08:44.72 the judge of the universe, 00:08:44.75\00:08:46.65 He gives us the privilege of His grace. 00:08:46.69\00:08:50.33 So that we can stand before Him 00:08:50.36\00:08:52.49 and open our hearts to confess our sins 00:08:52.53\00:08:54.76 and know that He is faithful 00:08:54.80\00:08:56.13 and just to forgive us of our sins, 00:08:56.16\00:08:57.80 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 00:08:57.83\00:09:00.47 Now, let's read that text again, 00:09:00.50\00:09:02.34 Ephesians 2:8-9 with some theological gloves 00:09:02.37\00:09:08.01 because we are saved by grace through what? 00:09:08.04\00:09:10.21 Through faith. 00:09:10.25\00:09:11.58 Paul the Apostle now, begins to tie it over... 00:09:11.61\00:09:14.35 Go to Romans 3:31. 00:09:14.38\00:09:16.82 He says, "Oh yeah, we are saved by grace through faith," 00:09:16.85\00:09:19.65 but notice the question Paul asks. 00:09:19.69\00:09:21.96 Jill, could you read that for us, Romans 3:31 00:09:21.99\00:09:23.36 Sure. 00:09:23.39\00:09:24.73 "Do we then make void the law through faith? 00:09:24.76\00:09:26.76 Certainly not, on the contrary, we established the law." 00:09:26.80\00:09:30.23 He says, "Certainly not, 00:09:30.27\00:09:33.03 do we make void the law through faith?" 00:09:33.07\00:09:35.20 In other words, since we are saved 00:09:35.24\00:09:36.81 by grace through faith, 00:09:36.84\00:09:38.17 does that now give us a license to ignore the law? 00:09:38.21\00:09:41.01 I like the way the King James Version says, 00:09:41.04\00:09:42.78 "God forbid." 00:09:42.81\00:09:45.81 That's right. Certainly not, absolutely not. 00:09:45.85\00:09:48.65 Do we step out of court and say, 00:09:48.68\00:09:50.85 "Since I got away with that speeding ticket, 00:09:50.89\00:09:52.89 I'm going to peel off from the courthouse 00:09:52.92\00:09:54.52 and just let them know how I feel." 00:09:54.56\00:09:56.73 No, absolutely not. 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.29 I want to tell you when that officer let me go, 00:09:58.33\00:10:01.56 it was a long time 00:10:01.60\00:10:03.43 before I got past the speed limit. 00:10:03.47\00:10:05.57 And then one patrolmen said, 00:10:05.60\00:10:06.94 he said, "Now, I in the State of Illinois, 00:10:06.97\00:10:08.67 I don't want to tell you this to have you get in trouble 00:10:08.70\00:10:12.14 because it's not a hardened fast law." 00:10:12.17\00:10:13.91 But he said, "If you stay 00:10:13.94\00:10:15.28 within 10 miles of the speed limit, 00:10:15.31\00:10:16.88 we'll give you a little bit of grace. 00:10:16.91\00:10:18.25 But when you start going way past that, 00:10:18.28\00:10:20.22 you know, it's up to the officers 00:10:20.25\00:10:21.58 to make that call." 00:10:21.62\00:10:22.95 It's not in the law book that 00:10:22.98\00:10:24.32 you have 10 miles off the speed limit, 00:10:24.35\00:10:25.82 but they tend to give you 00:10:25.85\00:10:27.19 a little bit of grace in that respect. 00:10:27.22\00:10:29.29 God, His law is not a flexible law. 00:10:29.32\00:10:34.56 I want to say that because God had said, 00:10:34.60\00:10:36.10 "Well, you can steal a little bit. 00:10:36.13\00:10:40.54 You could lie a little bit." 00:10:40.57\00:10:42.40 No, God's law is a transcript of His character. 00:10:42.44\00:10:47.18 And God is the same when? 00:10:47.21\00:10:49.31 Yesterday, today and forever. 00:10:49.34\00:10:51.65 God is not flexible, but God is full of grace. 00:10:51.68\00:10:56.28 So we have to understand 00:10:56.32\00:10:57.65 the two go together hand-in-hand. 00:10:57.69\00:10:59.02 Look at another passage. 00:10:59.05\00:11:00.39 Here's why it's important when we say we know God 00:11:00.42\00:11:03.66 that we live in harmony with His commandments. 00:11:03.69\00:11:07.50 Because of His grace, we now have the obligation 00:11:07.53\00:11:10.83 to pull off after being stopped by an officer, 00:11:10.87\00:11:13.54 and show him that 00:11:13.57\00:11:14.90 we can be a law abiding citizen. 00:11:14.94\00:11:16.74 When God forgives us, we now have to demonstrate that 00:11:16.77\00:11:20.68 we love Him so much for His grace. 00:11:20.71\00:11:22.64 If you love me... finish it with me. 00:11:22.68\00:11:24.48 Keep My commandments. 00:11:24.51\00:11:25.91 We show Him because of His love and His grace. 00:11:25.95\00:11:27.78 We are wanting by His strength to live in harmony 00:11:27.82\00:11:31.19 with His commandments. 00:11:31.22\00:11:32.55 And there is a stern rebuke for those who say, 00:11:32.59\00:11:34.59 "Well, God's commandments 00:11:34.62\00:11:35.96 are not applicable to my Christian walk." 00:11:35.99\00:11:37.79 Here it is in 1 John 2:3-4. 00:11:37.83\00:11:42.36 You know what that passage is, right, Ryan? 00:11:42.40\00:11:43.80 That's right. 00:11:43.83\00:11:45.17 Okay, Ryan do you have it, 1 John 2:3-4? 00:11:45.20\00:11:47.70 Look at that. Yes, 1 John 2:3-4. 00:11:47.74\00:11:49.07 Stern rebuke about what happens when we decide 00:11:49.10\00:11:51.44 not to honor God's commandments. 00:11:51.47\00:11:53.21 It says, "Now, by this we know Him..." 00:11:53.24\00:11:55.08 excuse me, "By this we know that 00:11:55.11\00:11:56.44 we know Him if we keep His commandments. 00:11:56.48\00:11:58.65 He who says I know Him 00:11:58.68\00:12:00.02 and does not keep His commandments 00:12:00.05\00:12:01.38 is a liar and the truth is not in him." 00:12:01.42\00:12:03.52 Are you seeing? 00:12:03.55\00:12:04.89 So you say you know the police officer, 00:12:04.92\00:12:06.89 yet you're speeding through his town. 00:12:06.92\00:12:08.82 Oh, no, you don't know that police officer 00:12:08.86\00:12:10.59 because he does not like people speeding through his town. 00:12:10.63\00:12:15.53 You got to understand that God is a God of mercy. 00:12:15.56\00:12:18.37 God is a God of grace, 00:12:18.40\00:12:19.83 but God is the God of requirements. 00:12:19.87\00:12:21.97 And He didn't give us 10 suggestions 00:12:22.00\00:12:24.04 or 10 optional principles. 00:12:24.07\00:12:26.44 They're called Ten Commandments, 00:12:26.47\00:12:28.78 but they are not from the heart of an angry God. 00:12:28.81\00:12:32.05 They are from the heart of a loving God. 00:12:32.08\00:12:34.65 So the question is, how did this law get violated? 00:12:34.68\00:12:37.12 As we look very briefly at Sunday's lesson. 00:12:37.15\00:12:39.85 I have a few points to make 00:12:39.89\00:12:41.22 before I transition to the next person. 00:12:41.26\00:12:44.16 Let's find out how we got into the condition 00:12:44.19\00:12:46.19 that we're in. 00:12:46.23\00:12:47.56 Ezekiel 28:15-16, 00:12:47.60\00:12:49.86 I want to transition on this passage. 00:12:49.90\00:12:52.50 And this is about law in heaven. 00:12:52.53\00:12:53.97 It's obvious that there was a law in heaven 00:12:54.00\00:12:55.64 or else this passage 00:12:55.67\00:12:57.01 would not have been in the Bible. 00:12:57.04\00:12:58.84 Ezekiel 28:15, "You were perfect in your ways, 00:12:58.87\00:13:02.74 from the day you were created, 00:13:02.78\00:13:05.65 till iniquity was found in you. 00:13:05.68\00:13:08.02 By the abundance of your trading, 00:13:08.05\00:13:09.58 you became filled 00:13:09.62\00:13:10.95 with violence within and you sinned. 00:13:10.99\00:13:14.16 Therefore, I cast you as a profane thing 00:13:14.19\00:13:17.73 out of the mountain of God. 00:13:17.76\00:13:19.36 And I destroyed you O covering cherub 00:13:19.39\00:13:21.73 from the midst of the fiery stone." 00:13:21.76\00:13:23.73 And here's the application, 00:13:23.77\00:13:25.70 iniquity and sinned are two words 00:13:25.73\00:13:28.94 that could not exist apart 00:13:28.97\00:13:31.81 from the existence of a law. 00:13:31.84\00:13:34.44 You can't be a person that lives a life of iniquity. 00:13:34.48\00:13:37.58 You cannot have cherished sin. 00:13:37.61\00:13:39.51 You could not be guilty of sinning 00:13:39.55\00:13:41.75 if there was no law to violate. 00:13:41.78\00:13:43.95 The foundation of God's government is law. 00:13:43.99\00:13:48.26 And 1 John 3:4 says, 00:13:48.29\00:13:50.66 "Whosoever committed sin transgresseth also the law, 00:13:50.69\00:13:55.30 for sin is the transgression of the law." 00:13:55.33\00:13:59.03 So here's the point of transition, 00:13:59.07\00:14:01.47 God's law and God's grace are from the same heart. 00:14:01.50\00:14:05.97 But God is inflexible and His law is inflexible, 00:14:06.01\00:14:08.78 yet His grace is available for every one of us. 00:14:08.81\00:14:11.88 We are saved by it and we live under God's grace. 00:14:11.91\00:14:15.32 Amen. Amen. 00:14:15.35\00:14:16.69 You know, I always like to point out 00:14:16.72\00:14:19.52 justice is getting what we deserve. 00:14:19.55\00:14:23.66 Mercy is not getting what we deserve. 00:14:23.69\00:14:28.06 Grace is getting what we don't deserve. 00:14:28.10\00:14:31.97 I love that. Yes. 00:14:32.00\00:14:33.87 I have Tuesday's lessons. 00:14:33.90\00:14:35.64 I'm Shelley Quinn, 00:14:35.67\00:14:37.01 and this is the Law in Deuteronomy. 00:14:37.04\00:14:40.58 Let me just... 00:14:40.61\00:14:41.94 Well, I'll save that comment for just a second. 00:14:41.98\00:14:44.21 What we've got is that 00:14:44.25\00:14:46.01 God's chosen people are at the edge 00:14:46.05\00:14:49.62 of the Promised Land. 00:14:49.65\00:14:53.05 They're getting ready to go in 00:14:53.09\00:14:54.79 and Moses stops them 00:14:54.82\00:14:56.62 and he gives them a lot of instructions. 00:14:56.66\00:14:59.23 He gives them again, the Book of the Covenant, 00:14:59.26\00:15:04.07 the Book of the Law, 00:15:04.10\00:15:05.50 he is expanding what was written in Exodus 24:7. 00:15:05.53\00:15:10.44 And he is going to have them do a covenant commitment. 00:15:10.47\00:15:15.04 He's re-ratifying the covenant as it were. 00:15:15.08\00:15:18.75 That's what Deuteronomy means. 00:15:18.78\00:15:21.25 It's the second giving of the law. 00:15:21.28\00:15:23.75 I have to say this. 00:15:23.79\00:15:25.35 When we see the law and the prophets, 00:15:25.39\00:15:28.16 what does that refer to? 00:15:28.19\00:15:29.59 It's all of the Old Testament. 00:15:29.62\00:15:31.89 When we see the Law of Moses, 00:15:31.93\00:15:34.30 it's talking about the first five books of Moses. 00:15:34.33\00:15:37.60 When we see Book of the Law, it is referring to Deuteronomy. 00:15:37.63\00:15:43.94 And I want to point something out because, you know, 00:15:43.97\00:15:47.01 sometimes we just say law, 00:15:47.04\00:15:49.04 and everybody assumes it's the Ten Commandments. 00:15:49.08\00:15:51.71 But if we go back to Galatians 3:10, 00:15:51.75\00:15:55.48 the law that Paul is talking about in Galatians 00:15:55.52\00:15:59.39 that we're no longer under... 00:15:59.42\00:16:01.12 Always read in context because you could say, 00:16:01.16\00:16:04.46 "Oh, we're not under the Ten Commandments." 00:16:04.49\00:16:06.06 That's not what he's saying. 00:16:06.09\00:16:07.43 Look in context, in verse 10, 00:16:07.46\00:16:10.10 he says, "As many as are of the works of the law 00:16:10.13\00:16:13.87 are under a curse. 00:16:13.90\00:16:15.30 For it is written..." 00:16:15.34\00:16:16.67 And now he's going to quote directly 00:16:16.71\00:16:18.94 from Deuteronomy 27:26. 00:16:18.97\00:16:22.04 He says, "Cursed is everyone 00:16:22.08\00:16:23.65 who does not continuing in all the things, 00:16:23.68\00:16:25.78 which are written in the Book of the Law to do them." 00:16:25.81\00:16:29.62 That's right. 00:16:29.65\00:16:30.99 So the law that Paul is referring to here 00:16:31.02\00:16:34.16 is the Book of the Law. 00:16:34.19\00:16:35.66 Now what happens? 00:16:35.69\00:16:38.39 Moses is getting this younger generation. 00:16:38.43\00:16:42.00 He's explaining the love of God. 00:16:42.03\00:16:44.47 He's explaining the grace of God, 00:16:44.50\00:16:46.77 and he's trying to get them to affirm a commitment 00:16:46.80\00:16:50.87 to a relationship with God. 00:16:50.91\00:16:53.78 And that relationship, blessings, 00:16:53.81\00:16:58.08 the pathway to blessings was obedience to God. 00:16:58.11\00:17:02.28 He is seeking... 00:17:02.32\00:17:04.55 God is seeking a response from us. 00:17:04.59\00:17:08.52 His sovereignty, His love, and that response is obedience. 00:17:08.56\00:17:12.63 So in Deuteronomy 7:7-11, 00:17:12.66\00:17:15.43 he reminds them of God's grace, 00:17:15.46\00:17:17.73 God's law, how God saved them. 00:17:17.77\00:17:22.20 God saved them before he ever asked them to obey. 00:17:22.24\00:17:24.87 Isn't that interesting? 00:17:24.91\00:17:26.24 He redeemed them from Egypt. 00:17:26.27\00:17:28.78 He brought them through the Red Sea, 00:17:28.81\00:17:31.01 just because of His love for them 00:17:31.05\00:17:33.38 and because of His covenant 00:17:33.42\00:17:36.52 with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 00:17:36.55\00:17:38.65 So they have been saved by grace, no doubt. 00:17:38.69\00:17:42.46 But God had done for them 00:17:42.49\00:17:44.39 what they couldn't do for themselves. 00:17:44.43\00:17:46.26 Their response of faith was to be 00:17:46.29\00:17:49.03 one of loyalty and love to God 00:17:49.06\00:17:52.73 and obedience that was motivated by love. 00:17:52.77\00:17:56.30 So what Moses is doing is reminding them. 00:17:56.34\00:17:58.97 Hey, God is faithful. 00:17:59.01\00:18:01.11 He keeps covenant with whom? 00:18:01.14\00:18:04.91 With those who keep covenant with Him, 00:18:04.95\00:18:07.12 with those who walk in obedience 00:18:07.15\00:18:10.52 to His commandments. 00:18:10.55\00:18:12.09 And then He warns them all these curses 00:18:12.12\00:18:14.99 are in the law for disobedience. 00:18:15.02\00:18:17.73 But let's look at 00:18:17.76\00:18:22.26 because he is repeatedly telling them, 00:18:22.30\00:18:26.17 "If you want to be blessed, observe this law, 00:18:26.20\00:18:28.50 obey this law." 00:18:28.54\00:18:29.87 Deuteronomy 28:58. 00:18:29.90\00:18:31.64 He says, "Observe all the words of the law 00:18:31.67\00:18:34.51 that are written in this book." 00:18:34.54\00:18:36.24 It's the book... 00:18:36.28\00:18:37.61 verse 61, he calls it the Book of the Law. 00:18:37.65\00:18:41.28 "That you may fear His glorious and awesome name 00:18:41.32\00:18:44.25 of Lord your God." 00:18:44.29\00:18:45.85 And then if you jump down to Deuteronomy 29:14 00:18:45.89\00:18:50.59 is where we'll begin. 00:18:50.63\00:18:52.03 "I make this covenant and this oath," now get this, 00:18:52.06\00:18:56.56 "not with you alone, 00:18:56.60\00:18:59.10 but with him who stands here 00:18:59.13\00:19:00.97 with us today before the Lord our God." 00:19:01.00\00:19:03.57 And then look, "As well as with him, 00:19:03.61\00:19:07.78 who is not here with us today." 00:19:07.81\00:19:11.45 This covenant, this Old Covenant, 00:19:11.48\00:19:14.68 it is the civil laws, 00:19:14.72\00:19:17.32 the ceremonial laws were nailed to cross. 00:19:17.35\00:19:19.92 That's what got nailed to the cross. 00:19:19.95\00:19:22.12 But it was for all the people and it is just... 00:19:22.16\00:19:27.30 God's covenants are a progressive revelation, 00:19:27.33\00:19:31.13 a progressive unfolding 00:19:31.17\00:19:33.20 of His everlasting covenant of grace, 00:19:33.23\00:19:37.47 that we will be saved through the Lamb that was slain 00:19:37.51\00:19:40.31 from the foundation of the world. 00:19:40.34\00:19:42.24 So then he goes on and he's describing idols 00:19:42.28\00:19:45.31 and pagan worships of the other nation 00:19:45.35\00:19:47.32 and listen to what he says. 00:19:47.35\00:19:49.02 He said, "Hey, avoid these..." 00:19:49.05\00:19:50.45 verse 18, and this is, where am I? 00:19:50.49\00:19:53.79 Deuteronomy 29:18, 00:19:53.82\00:19:56.49 "So that they may not be among you" he said, 00:19:56.52\00:19:59.73 "avoid these idols in this pagan worship. 00:19:59.76\00:20:02.46 So they may not be among you, 00:20:02.50\00:20:04.07 man or woman or family or tribe 00:20:04.10\00:20:05.90 whose hearts turn away from the Lord our God, 00:20:05.93\00:20:09.07 to go after and serve the gods of these nations, 00:20:09.10\00:20:11.77 that they may not be among you, a root bearing bitterness, 00:20:11.81\00:20:16.44 or wormwood, and so it may not happen." 00:20:16.48\00:20:20.28 Listen to what he doesn't want to happen. 00:20:20.32\00:20:22.82 That when someone hears the words of the curse 00:20:22.85\00:20:25.65 in the Book of Deuteronomy that in his heart, 00:20:25.69\00:20:29.79 he's blessing himself and saying, 00:20:29.82\00:20:32.23 and this is a quote from verse 19. 00:20:32.26\00:20:34.90 The guy is saying in his heart, 00:20:34.93\00:20:36.70 "Oh, I shall have peace, even though 00:20:36.73\00:20:38.80 I follow the dictates of my heart." 00:20:38.83\00:20:41.37 You know that's what cheap grace is. 00:20:41.40\00:20:43.87 People who think that "God has saved me. 00:20:43.91\00:20:46.88 I'm under covenant. 00:20:46.91\00:20:48.24 I'll do whatever I want." 00:20:48.28\00:20:49.71 And Moses says, 00:20:49.74\00:20:51.88 "As though the drunkard could be 00:20:51.91\00:20:54.22 included with the sober." 00:20:54.25\00:20:56.55 And verse 20, 00:20:56.58\00:20:57.95 "The Lord would not spare him 00:20:57.99\00:20:59.99 for then the anger of the Lord 00:21:00.02\00:21:01.36 and His jealousy would burn against that man, 00:21:01.39\00:21:03.32 every curse that is written in this book," 00:21:03.36\00:21:06.16 that was a witness against him, 00:21:06.19\00:21:09.13 "would settle on him, 00:21:09.16\00:21:10.50 and the Lord would blot his name 00:21:10.53\00:21:13.00 from under heaven. 00:21:13.03\00:21:15.44 And the Lord would separate him 00:21:15.47\00:21:17.24 from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, 00:21:17.27\00:21:20.58 according to all of the curses of the covenant 00:21:20.61\00:21:24.45 that are written in His book of law, 00:21:24.48\00:21:29.18 the Book of Deuteronomy." 00:21:29.22\00:21:31.45 And we saw in verse, we looked at this before, 00:21:31.49\00:21:34.29 Deuteronomy 31:26. 00:21:34.32\00:21:36.52 When Moses finished writing that covenant law, 00:21:36.56\00:21:40.30 he said, "Take this Book of the Law." 00:21:40.33\00:21:42.03 That's Deuteronomy 31:26. 00:21:42.06\00:21:44.33 "Put it in the side pocket of the ark 00:21:44.37\00:21:47.54 as a witness against you." 00:21:47.57\00:21:49.64 That's what Colossians 2:14 00:21:49.67\00:21:51.71 is talking about that got nailed to the cross. 00:21:51.74\00:21:54.74 So these curses for breaking the covenant, 00:21:54.78\00:21:58.41 we don't have time to go through that. 00:21:58.45\00:21:59.91 But that breaking the covenant was apostasy 00:21:59.95\00:22:02.92 and the curses are found in Deuteronomy 27 and 28. 00:22:02.95\00:22:07.02 It's amazing to me 00:22:07.06\00:22:08.39 how best of people fell into apostasy, 00:22:08.42\00:22:12.39 but God's immeasurable love 00:22:12.43\00:22:15.46 and grace provided them a way to turn back to Him. 00:22:15.50\00:22:19.10 And Deuteronomy 30:9-10, 00:22:19.13\00:22:23.74 the provision for turning back to the Lord. 00:22:23.77\00:22:26.71 Deuteronomy 30:9, 00:22:26.74\00:22:28.08 "The Lord your God will make you abound 00:22:28.11\00:22:29.81 in all the work of your hand, the fruit of your body, 00:22:29.84\00:22:32.01 the increase of your livestock, 00:22:32.05\00:22:33.92 in the produce of your land for the good. 00:22:33.95\00:22:36.08 For the Lord will again rejoice over you for good 00:22:36.12\00:22:39.82 as He rejoiced over your father, 00:22:39.85\00:22:42.79 if you obey His voice. 00:22:42.82\00:22:45.56 Obey the voice of the Lord your God, 00:22:45.59\00:22:47.40 to keep His commandments and His statutes, 00:22:47.43\00:22:50.33 which are written in this Book of the Law. 00:22:50.37\00:22:53.50 And if you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart, 00:22:53.54\00:22:57.91 with all of your soul." 00:22:57.94\00:23:00.08 So what we're seeing here is that 00:23:00.11\00:23:05.51 throughout the Old Testament, 00:23:05.55\00:23:07.98 God, His heart, 00:23:08.02\00:23:11.29 His plea is returned to me. 00:23:11.32\00:23:14.86 Oh, return to me, I'll return to you. 00:23:14.89\00:23:17.96 God is a God of love and grace. 00:23:17.99\00:23:21.03 We are saved by grace through faith 00:23:21.06\00:23:23.00 in the New Covenant as you've looked at. 00:23:23.03\00:23:25.83 It's a part from obedience of the Ten Commandments, 00:23:25.87\00:23:30.77 but the Ten Commandments 00:23:30.81\00:23:32.14 are as they were part of the Old Covenant. 00:23:32.17\00:23:34.54 They are part of the new. 00:23:34.58\00:23:36.78 Read Hebrews 8:8-10 God says, 00:23:36.81\00:23:39.51 "I'll write them on your hearts. 00:23:39.55\00:23:41.48 I will work in you to will and to do my good pleasure, 00:23:41.52\00:23:45.09 and you shall walk 00:23:45.12\00:23:47.06 in covenant love relationship with me." 00:23:47.09\00:23:50.49 Amen. 00:23:50.53\00:23:51.86 Thank you so much, Shelley, for that lesson study. 00:23:51.89\00:23:54.00 And, Thank you, Shelley. 00:24:40.91\00:24:42.24 What a blessing? 00:24:42.28\00:24:43.71 I actually have been given the hardest lesson. 00:24:43.75\00:24:47.75 Not because of the lesson itself, 00:24:47.78\00:24:49.12 but because of the title. 00:24:49.15\00:24:50.49 I can't actually figure out how to pronounce it. 00:24:50.52\00:24:53.25 It sounds like, it looks like it should be the Letov Lock. 00:24:53.29\00:24:58.39 But I looked up to Hebrew 00:24:58.43\00:25:00.16 and it didn't actually seen that way. 00:25:00.20\00:25:01.56 Either way, this title is all about 00:25:01.60\00:25:04.97 keeping the law of God for our good. 00:25:05.00\00:25:09.37 So God wants us to understand this principle. 00:25:09.40\00:25:12.74 Now, the verses that we've been 00:25:12.77\00:25:14.54 given here for our lesson today, 00:25:14.58\00:25:15.98 Tuesday's lesson are in Deuteronomy 10:1-15. 00:25:16.01\00:25:20.75 But really, we've already looked at 00:25:20.78\00:25:23.39 most of those verses in the previous lesson. 00:25:23.42\00:25:25.75 And so I'm going to skip down 00:25:25.79\00:25:27.36 to a key verse that is verse 15 of Deuteronomy Chapter 10. 00:25:27.39\00:25:30.69 I'm going to do this for two reasons. 00:25:30.73\00:25:32.13 One, I mentioned we've already covered it, 00:25:32.16\00:25:33.50 but another one is 00:25:33.53\00:25:34.86 because if I skip down to verse 15, 00:25:34.90\00:25:36.87 I don't have to pronounce all those difficult words like, 00:25:36.90\00:25:40.10 Ben Hur, Roth and Jaakan and Moserah 00:25:40.14\00:25:42.97 and Gudgodah and Jotbathah. 00:25:43.00\00:25:47.48 I don't have to pronounce those words 00:25:47.51\00:25:48.84 if I just go right down to verse 15. 00:25:48.88\00:25:51.78 Plus verse 15 is so powerful, is so key. 00:25:51.81\00:25:55.18 Look at what God is saying here in verse 15 00:25:55.22\00:25:57.82 of Deuteronomy Chapter 10. 00:25:57.85\00:26:00.26 "Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them. 00:26:00.29\00:26:06.06 And He chose their seed 00:26:06.09\00:26:07.66 after them even you above all people as it is this day." 00:26:07.70\00:26:13.27 One of the primary truths that 00:26:13.30\00:26:15.54 is communicated through the Book of the Law, 00:26:15.57\00:26:18.34 the present truth in Deuteronomy 00:26:18.37\00:26:20.48 is that God loves us. 00:26:20.51\00:26:22.44 And you cannot separate God's love for us 00:26:22.48\00:26:25.31 from His desire to give us His law. 00:26:25.35\00:26:29.38 The law of God is a powerful revelation 00:26:29.42\00:26:32.95 of the love of God for us. 00:26:32.99\00:26:35.59 God gives us His law. 00:26:35.62\00:26:37.76 And I loved what Pastor John shared earlier, and that is, 00:26:37.79\00:26:41.60 is that grace exists because the law exists. 00:26:41.63\00:26:46.60 You know, we need to recognize 00:26:46.63\00:26:48.54 that that God's law is an intricate 00:26:48.57\00:26:50.64 part of the plan of salvation. 00:26:50.67\00:26:52.77 God hasn't abandoned us 00:26:52.81\00:26:54.14 to our own thoughts and imaginations. 00:26:54.18\00:26:55.54 God has set up a standard for us 00:26:55.58\00:26:57.71 so we can find our way, 00:26:57.75\00:26:59.08 so we can navigate our way to Jesus Christ, 00:26:59.11\00:27:01.82 so we can recognize our sins 00:27:01.85\00:27:03.79 and be led to Him to give them to Him who became sin for us. 00:27:03.82\00:27:07.49 So this week's lesson is so powerful. 00:27:07.52\00:27:09.82 It's talking about God's grace and love for Israel. 00:27:09.86\00:27:13.70 And it goes on to say... 00:27:13.73\00:27:15.20 and I just want to read from the lesson, 00:27:15.23\00:27:16.56 Cliff did such a good job here describing this, 00:27:16.60\00:27:19.57 he says, "We can't forget either..." 00:27:19.60\00:27:21.77 The end of verse 13 00:27:21.80\00:27:23.44 "Keep these things for your good." 00:27:23.47\00:27:26.94 In other words, 00:27:26.98\00:27:28.31 God is commanding the people to obey 00:27:28.34\00:27:30.41 because it is in their best interest to do so. 00:27:30.45\00:27:33.25 God made them, God sustains them, 00:27:33.28\00:27:35.52 God knows what is best for them 00:27:35.55\00:27:37.72 and He wants all that is best for them. 00:27:37.75\00:27:41.42 Obedience to His law, 00:27:41.46\00:27:43.09 to His Ten Commandments 00:27:43.12\00:27:44.76 can work only to their benefits. 00:27:44.79\00:27:47.96 The law often has been 00:27:48.00\00:27:49.33 compared to a hedgerow wall of protection 00:27:49.36\00:27:51.43 and by staying within that wall 00:27:51.47\00:27:53.20 the followers are protected 00:27:53.23\00:27:55.20 from the raft of evils that otherwise would 00:27:55.24\00:27:58.71 overtake and destroy them. 00:27:58.74\00:28:00.08 In short, out of love for His people, 00:28:00.11\00:28:01.91 God gave them His law 00:28:01.94\00:28:03.45 and obedience to His law is for our good. 00:28:03.48\00:28:07.48 I love those words, Cliff, 00:28:07.52\00:28:08.85 you did a really good job, in my opinion, on sharing that, 00:28:08.88\00:28:11.95 that hedge of protection 00:28:11.99\00:28:13.39 that God wants to have for us to protect us 00:28:13.42\00:28:16.16 from this raft of evil that is all around us in this world. 00:28:16.19\00:28:20.33 And that's really what Jesus came to do. 00:28:20.36\00:28:22.16 When Jesus came to this earth, 00:28:22.20\00:28:23.53 He came to substantiate the validity of God's law. 00:28:23.57\00:28:27.30 He was the law in person. 00:28:27.34\00:28:30.71 Jesus Christ was the incarnation 00:28:30.74\00:28:32.47 of the law of God. 00:28:32.51\00:28:33.84 Jesus Christ lived this life of perfect obedience 00:28:33.88\00:28:37.51 to God's law and He showed us 00:28:37.55\00:28:39.68 what the law looks like in tangible, 00:28:39.71\00:28:42.28 practical revelation. 00:28:42.32\00:28:44.22 In other words, 00:28:44.25\00:28:45.59 it wasn't just something that was written, 00:28:45.62\00:28:47.02 you know, in stone, 00:28:47.06\00:28:48.39 something that was written in pen and ink. 00:28:48.42\00:28:50.23 Jesus Christ put flesh and bones. 00:28:50.26\00:28:52.63 Jesus Christ showed us 00:28:52.66\00:28:54.00 what the law looks like in action. 00:28:54.03\00:28:56.06 And when he came to show us 00:28:56.10\00:28:57.57 what the law looked like in action, 00:28:57.60\00:28:58.93 when he started to expound upon this law, 00:28:58.97\00:29:01.80 a lot of the religious leaders 00:29:01.84\00:29:03.17 started scratching their head, 00:29:03.20\00:29:04.54 and they started thinking, "Well, wait a minute. 00:29:04.57\00:29:06.51 He's doing away with the law." 00:29:06.54\00:29:07.91 Jesus comes incarnate in the law, 00:29:07.94\00:29:11.71 and we start thinking He's doing away with the law. 00:29:11.75\00:29:14.52 And I think that's the same thing 00:29:14.55\00:29:15.88 that we're looking at today. 00:29:15.92\00:29:17.25 We're looking at Jesus coming in carted in the law, 00:29:17.29\00:29:20.36 and a lot of people saying, 00:29:20.39\00:29:21.72 "Well, Jesus came to do away with the law." 00:29:21.76\00:29:23.56 He came to get rid of the law, but rather the Bible says, yes, 00:29:23.59\00:29:28.13 Shelley, "He came to magnify the law and make it honorable." 00:29:28.16\00:29:32.00 So the religious leaders had a hard time discerning that. 00:29:32.03\00:29:34.80 They were, in fact, self deceived. 00:29:34.84\00:29:36.81 And the greatest deception 00:29:36.84\00:29:38.94 that the leaders stumbled over was Jesus Christ Himself. 00:29:38.97\00:29:43.85 Jesus Christ became a stumbling block 00:29:43.88\00:29:45.81 to the religious leaders of His time. 00:29:45.85\00:29:47.72 And we're going to find that as we embody the laws, 00:29:47.75\00:29:50.39 we bring the law into our lives and hearts 00:29:50.42\00:29:52.29 as we live out that law, 00:29:52.32\00:29:54.39 we also are going to be a stumbling block 00:29:54.42\00:29:56.42 to a lot of people just like Jesus was, 00:29:56.46\00:29:58.49 because we also are going to be 00:29:58.53\00:30:02.56 navigating a different path 00:30:02.60\00:30:04.57 than the rest of the world and the rest of Christianity 00:30:04.60\00:30:07.27 in our focus on being inside 00:30:07.30\00:30:09.90 that hedge that God has given to protect us. 00:30:09.94\00:30:12.41 And a lot of people are not going to discern this, 00:30:12.44\00:30:13.78 but some are. 00:30:13.81\00:30:15.14 You know, in the Bible, it tells us in 00:30:15.18\00:30:18.15 Acts 5:32, 00:30:18.18\00:30:22.78 it tells us that 00:30:22.82\00:30:24.29 we are His witnesses of these things. 00:30:24.32\00:30:27.26 And so is also the Holy Ghost 00:30:27.29\00:30:30.36 whom God had given to them that obey Him. 00:30:30.39\00:30:35.20 So the Holy Spirit is the only way 00:30:35.23\00:30:37.70 we can have true spiritual discernment. 00:30:37.73\00:30:39.70 You know, over and over again in the Book of Revelation, 00:30:39.73\00:30:41.74 God counsels the church 00:30:41.77\00:30:44.37 to listen to what the Spirit says, 00:30:44.41\00:30:47.01 listen to what the Spirit says to the church. 00:30:47.04\00:30:49.31 The Holy Spirit gives us discernment. 00:30:49.34\00:30:51.91 If we know to do His will is because we've been instructed, 00:30:51.95\00:30:56.08 convicted by the Holy Spirit. 00:30:56.12\00:30:58.42 And Jesus was full of the Spirit. 00:30:58.45\00:31:00.09 And so Jesus had this understanding, 00:31:00.12\00:31:02.16 this perception that a lot of religious leaders 00:31:02.19\00:31:05.39 stumbled over and we're going to be 00:31:05.43\00:31:06.76 facing as we get to the end of time. 00:31:06.80\00:31:08.46 God wants to fill us with His Spirit 00:31:08.50\00:31:10.40 so that we can have discernment of the truth of His law 00:31:10.43\00:31:13.94 and its placement within the plan of salvation. 00:31:13.97\00:31:16.67 No, we're not saved by the law. 00:31:16.71\00:31:18.04 We've already established that over and over again, 00:31:18.07\00:31:19.41 we're saved by grace. 00:31:19.44\00:31:20.78 Yes. 00:31:20.81\00:31:22.14 But the reason why grace exists is because of the law. 00:31:22.18\00:31:24.51 I'm just never going to forget that phrase, John. 00:31:24.55\00:31:27.25 The reason why grace exists is because of law. 00:31:27.28\00:31:30.19 And so if we don't... 00:31:30.22\00:31:31.55 If we're not in harmony with the love, 00:31:31.59\00:31:32.92 if we don't love the law, 00:31:32.95\00:31:34.29 which is Christ in body who is the truth, the way, 00:31:34.32\00:31:36.93 the truth and the life. 00:31:36.96\00:31:38.36 If we do not step into harmony with God's law, 00:31:38.39\00:31:41.66 we are in danger of being deceived. 00:31:41.70\00:31:43.03 In fact, in 2 Thessalonians Chapter 2, 00:31:43.06\00:31:46.07 Paul gives us the warning. 00:31:46.10\00:31:48.37 He gives us a warning of 00:31:48.40\00:31:49.74 how God's people could be deceived in the end of time. 00:31:49.77\00:31:52.97 There are going to be many people 00:31:53.01\00:31:54.98 according to Revelation 13 that are going to be deceived. 00:31:55.01\00:31:57.48 In 2 Thessalonians Chapter 2, 00:31:57.51\00:31:59.05 there are four basic principles that Paul lays out there 00:31:59.08\00:32:02.78 to warn us of why we're deceived. 00:32:02.82\00:32:04.99 2 Thessalonians Chapter 2, 00:32:05.02\00:32:07.26 and we'll just look here at verses 8 through 12, 00:32:07.29\00:32:10.26 the first reason why we're deceived, 00:32:10.29\00:32:12.03 the second reason why we're deceived, 00:32:12.06\00:32:13.50 the third reason why we're deceived 00:32:13.53\00:32:14.86 and the fourth reason why we're deceived. 00:32:14.90\00:32:16.23 Now, let's just look here. 00:32:16.26\00:32:17.60 Give me a second to get this on my phone because I have my 00:32:17.63\00:32:20.64 Bible app here on my phone. 00:32:20.67\00:32:22.57 It's the fastest way for me to navigate 00:32:22.60\00:32:25.17 through the Word of God. 00:32:25.21\00:32:26.54 Verse 8 says, "And then shall that wicked be revealed 00:32:26.57\00:32:30.61 whom the Lord shall consume with a Spirit of His mouth 00:32:30.65\00:32:32.78 and destroy with the brightness of His coming." 00:32:32.81\00:32:34.58 Verse 9, "Even him, 00:32:34.62\00:32:35.95 whose coming is after 00:32:35.98\00:32:37.32 the working of Satan with all power and signs 00:32:37.35\00:32:38.69 and lying wonders, 00:32:38.72\00:32:40.06 with all this deceivableness of unrighteousness in them 00:32:40.09\00:32:42.72 that perish because..." 00:32:42.76\00:32:44.09 Here's number one, "They received, 00:32:44.13\00:32:45.93 not the love of the truth that they might be saved." 00:32:45.96\00:32:49.96 Verse 11, "For this cause 00:32:50.00\00:32:51.97 God shall send them strong delusion 00:32:52.00\00:32:54.37 that they should believe a lie." 00:32:54.40\00:32:56.30 So first of all, they believe not the truth. 00:32:56.34\00:32:58.47 Second of all, they believe a lie 00:32:58.51\00:32:59.94 and then it goes on to say this, 00:32:59.97\00:33:01.38 "That they all might be damned to believe not the truth 00:33:01.41\00:33:03.91 but had pleasure in unrighteousness." 00:33:03.95\00:33:07.08 So they believe not the truth 00:33:07.12\00:33:08.88 and they have pleasure in unrighteousness. 00:33:08.92\00:33:10.82 They don't love the truth. 00:33:10.85\00:33:12.89 They believe a lie. 00:33:12.92\00:33:14.29 They don't believe the truth, 00:33:14.32\00:33:15.66 and they have pleasure in unrighteousness. 00:33:15.69\00:33:17.59 And so God sends them strong delusion. 00:33:17.63\00:33:19.59 And I'm I thinking, "Well, 00:33:19.63\00:33:20.96 why would God send them strong delusion?" 00:33:21.00\00:33:23.00 Well, let's just close out with this thought. 00:33:23.03\00:33:25.10 The law of God being nailed to the cross 00:33:25.13\00:33:28.54 has become the strong delusion for many Christians today. 00:33:28.57\00:33:32.61 Jesus Christ was 00:33:32.64\00:33:34.48 the strong delusion for the Jews. 00:33:34.51\00:33:36.24 They stumbled over Him. 00:33:36.28\00:33:37.81 So it's not that God send strong delusion in the sense 00:33:37.85\00:33:40.12 that He wants us to be deceived. 00:33:40.15\00:33:41.55 He sends strong delusion in the revelation of truth, 00:33:41.58\00:33:45.35 in the revelation of what the Word of God says, 00:33:45.39\00:33:47.66 in the Revelation the word incarnate, 00:33:47.69\00:33:49.72 Jesus Christ Himself, and Christ in us. 00:33:49.76\00:33:52.59 Those who walk in the paths of God, 00:33:52.63\00:33:54.76 those who bring together God's law and grace, 00:33:54.80\00:33:57.73 those who are following the truth of His Word 00:33:57.77\00:34:00.94 become a strong delusion like Jesus did, 00:34:00.97\00:34:02.97 a stumbling block like Jesus did, 00:34:03.00\00:34:04.81 to those who love not the truth, 00:34:04.84\00:34:06.94 who believe a lie, who do not believe the truth 00:34:06.98\00:34:10.35 and have pleasure in unrighteousness. 00:34:10.38\00:34:12.65 And so it's vital for us to recognize this. 00:34:12.68\00:34:15.38 This is kind of a preparation for us 00:34:15.42\00:34:16.95 because when Jesus comes the second time, 00:34:16.99\00:34:18.95 we're told in Revelation 19:13, 00:34:18.99\00:34:21.76 He's going to have a name. 00:34:21.79\00:34:23.36 And the name that's going to be 00:34:23.39\00:34:24.73 written there is the Word of God. 00:34:24.76\00:34:28.13 This is all about the Word of God. 00:34:28.16\00:34:29.50 It's all about Jesus Christ. 00:34:29.53\00:34:30.87 It's all about loving Christ, obeying Christ, 00:34:30.90\00:34:32.37 being filled with the Spirit, 00:34:32.40\00:34:33.74 and having the discernment to follow Christ. 00:34:33.77\00:34:36.17 Grace and law are all about Jesus Christ. 00:34:36.20\00:34:39.81 Amen. 00:34:39.84\00:34:41.18 Thank you so much, Pastor James. 00:34:41.21\00:34:42.61 What an incredible study, each one of you. 00:34:42.64\00:34:44.25 I love that. 00:34:44.28\00:34:45.68 I have Wednesday's lesson, which is a slave in Egypt. 00:34:45.71\00:34:49.88 You know the concept of freedom from slavery, 00:34:49.92\00:34:52.49 redemption from bondage is all throughout 00:34:52.52\00:34:54.96 the Old Testament and especially 00:34:54.99\00:34:56.59 we find it all throughout the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:34:56.62\00:34:59.96 In fact, toward the end of Deuteronomy, 00:35:00.00\00:35:01.56 Deuteronomy 26:8, 00:35:01.60\00:35:04.53 it says, "So the Lord brought us 00:35:04.57\00:35:06.07 out of Egypt," how? 00:35:06.10\00:35:08.57 "With a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, 00:35:08.60\00:35:12.87 with great terror and with signs and wonders." 00:35:12.91\00:35:16.24 You see God called the children of Israel out of Egypt. 00:35:16.28\00:35:20.05 He brought them out of bondage. 00:35:20.08\00:35:21.52 He redeemed them from slavery. 00:35:21.55\00:35:24.92 Why were they called out of Egypt? 00:35:24.95\00:35:26.99 I always like to ask why questions. 00:35:27.02\00:35:28.72 When I was growing up, 00:35:28.76\00:35:30.09 I think I bothered my parents exceedingly with why questions. 00:35:30.13\00:35:33.73 But why? But why? 00:35:33.76\00:35:35.66 So I always like to say why. 00:35:35.70\00:35:37.37 Why did they come out of Egypt? 00:35:37.40\00:35:38.73 And I would say, for my study of the Word of God, 00:35:38.77\00:35:40.77 there's probably more reasons. 00:35:40.80\00:35:42.14 But I want to give you today seven reasons 00:35:42.17\00:35:44.51 why God called them out of Egypt. 00:35:44.54\00:35:47.38 Reason number one, 00:35:47.41\00:35:48.74 because He wanted them to be His people. 00:35:48.78\00:35:52.45 We see this in Deuteronomy 4:20, 00:35:52.48\00:35:55.85 "The Lord has taken you 00:35:55.88\00:35:57.79 and brought you out of the iron furnace, 00:35:57.82\00:36:00.02 out of Egypt, to be His people." 00:36:00.06\00:36:02.66 There it is. 00:36:02.69\00:36:04.03 He brought them out of Egypt to be His people. 00:36:04.06\00:36:06.80 "And inheritance as you were this day." 00:36:06.83\00:36:10.30 They were called out specifically 00:36:10.33\00:36:12.03 to become His people, and He would establish that 00:36:12.07\00:36:14.34 covenant relationship with them. 00:36:14.37\00:36:16.34 Reasons number two, He called them out of Egypt 00:36:16.37\00:36:18.71 because He wanted them to know and experience that 00:36:18.74\00:36:22.74 He was the only true God. 00:36:22.78\00:36:26.72 He didn't just want them to be His people. 00:36:26.75\00:36:28.58 He wanted them to know who He was. 00:36:28.62\00:36:30.39 He was the only true God. 00:36:30.42\00:36:32.52 If you jump over just a couple more chapters, 00:36:32.55\00:36:34.79 Deuteronomy 4:34 actually, 00:36:34.82\00:36:38.13 same chapter just a couple more verses sorry. 00:36:38.16\00:36:41.06 Deuteronomy 4:34, 00:36:41.10\00:36:44.00 "Did God ever try to go and take for Himself, 00:36:44.03\00:36:46.67 a nation from the midst of another nation, 00:36:46.70\00:36:50.04 by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, 00:36:50.07\00:36:53.81 by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, 00:36:53.84\00:36:57.31 by great terrors, according to all that the Lord 00:36:57.35\00:37:00.32 your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 00:37:00.35\00:37:03.08 To you, it was shown that you might know that 00:37:03.12\00:37:06.12 the Lord Himself is God. 00:37:06.15\00:37:08.42 There is none other besides Him." 00:37:08.46\00:37:10.83 So all the miracles of the children of Israel 00:37:10.86\00:37:13.83 being delivered from Egypt, 00:37:13.86\00:37:16.00 the plagues falling, the parting of the Red Sea, 00:37:16.03\00:37:18.70 the signs, the wonders that 00:37:18.73\00:37:20.14 God did to redeem them and restore them to Himself, 00:37:20.17\00:37:23.51 bring them out of Egypt 00:37:23.54\00:37:25.27 was to exemplify to them that He, 00:37:25.31\00:37:28.14 God alone is the only true God. 00:37:28.18\00:37:30.58 Reason number three, 00:37:30.61\00:37:31.95 He brought them out of Egypt because He loved them. 00:37:31.98\00:37:35.78 Deuteronomy 4, we're still in 4, 00:37:35.82\00:37:37.62 just read verse 37, "Because He loved your fathers, 00:37:37.65\00:37:42.39 therefore He chose their descendants after them, 00:37:42.42\00:37:46.19 and He brought you out of Egypt 00:37:46.23\00:37:47.83 with His Presence, with His mighty power." 00:37:47.86\00:37:51.53 He loved them. 00:37:51.57\00:37:52.90 Reason number four, 00:37:52.93\00:37:54.80 because He wanted to redeem them 00:37:54.84\00:37:57.14 and He wanted to set them free. 00:37:57.17\00:37:58.77 Now, we're going to the Book of Micah, 00:37:58.81\00:38:00.51 minor prophet Micah 6:4, 00:38:00.54\00:38:05.18 "For I brought you up from the land of Egypt. 00:38:05.21\00:38:08.65 I redeemed you from the house of bondage." 00:38:08.68\00:38:12.92 God brought them out of Egypt 00:38:12.95\00:38:14.29 because He didn't want to leave them in slavery. 00:38:14.32\00:38:15.86 And we could say 00:38:15.89\00:38:17.23 He did not want to leave them in sin, 00:38:17.26\00:38:19.19 and He wanted to redeem them and set them free. 00:38:19.23\00:38:22.20 Amen. 00:38:22.23\00:38:23.57 Reason number five, the reason 00:38:23.60\00:38:25.17 He brought them out of the land of Egypt, 00:38:25.20\00:38:27.00 He wanted to dwell with them. 00:38:27.04\00:38:29.64 Exodus 29:46, 00:38:29.67\00:38:34.91 "They shall know that I am the Lord their God, 00:38:34.94\00:38:37.21 who brought them up out of the land of Egypt 00:38:37.25\00:38:40.42 that I may dwell among them." 00:38:40.45\00:38:44.09 I am the Lord their God. 00:38:44.12\00:38:45.89 God brought them out of the land of Egypt 00:38:45.92\00:38:48.56 because He wanted to dwell with them. 00:38:48.59\00:38:52.13 Reason number six, 00:38:52.16\00:38:53.50 we're going to Leviticus for this. 00:38:53.53\00:38:55.16 Reason number six 00:38:55.20\00:38:56.56 because He wanted to be their God. 00:38:56.60\00:39:00.67 Leviticus 11:45, "I am the Lord 00:39:00.70\00:39:04.14 who brings you up out of the land of Egypt 00:39:04.17\00:39:06.74 to be your God." 00:39:06.78\00:39:10.08 Finally, reasons number seven, 00:39:10.11\00:39:11.78 we're still in Leviticus but we're going to Chapter 25. 00:39:11.81\00:39:14.88 Because He wanted to give them the land of Canaan. 00:39:14.92\00:39:19.55 Leviticus 25:38, "I am the Lord your God, 00:39:19.59\00:39:23.49 who brought you out of the land of Egypt 00:39:23.53\00:39:25.79 to give you the land of Canaan, 00:39:25.83\00:39:27.30 and to be your God." 00:39:27.33\00:39:29.43 You know, I might be sitting there 00:39:29.46\00:39:30.80 and sometimes I read that and I say, "Well, great. 00:39:30.83\00:39:33.17 Well, does that matter to me, Pastor Ryan? 00:39:33.20\00:39:35.10 The children of Israel were brought out of Egypt. 00:39:35.14\00:39:36.74 Well, that's a great story. 00:39:36.77\00:39:38.24 It's exciting to read about that. 00:39:38.27\00:39:39.61 Okay. 00:39:39.64\00:39:40.98 The children of Israel were redeemed 00:39:41.01\00:39:42.34 because God wanted them to be His people 00:39:42.38\00:39:43.71 and He wanted them to know 00:39:43.75\00:39:45.08 and experience He was the only true God. 00:39:45.11\00:39:46.72 He loved them, and what does that 00:39:46.75\00:39:48.45 even have to do with me?" 00:39:48.48\00:39:49.88 But the application for this to me is incredible 00:39:49.92\00:39:53.82 because I don't know about you, 00:39:53.86\00:39:55.99 but I was lost in the land of sin. 00:39:56.02\00:39:58.33 We were all captives in Egypt. 00:39:58.36\00:40:01.86 We were all in bondage, 00:40:01.90\00:40:04.17 in addiction, in slavery to sin. 00:40:04.20\00:40:07.04 Satan held us, or maybe right now 00:40:07.07\00:40:10.91 is holding you captive in the land of Egypt. 00:40:10.94\00:40:13.84 And what does God say? 00:40:13.88\00:40:15.21 He says to you right now, "I want to deliver you." 00:40:15.24\00:40:18.21 And why does He deliver you? 00:40:18.25\00:40:19.58 Why does He want to bring you out of Egypt? 00:40:19.61\00:40:22.05 Because He wants you to be His child. 00:40:22.08\00:40:24.52 I love that in Romans 8. 00:40:24.55\00:40:26.79 We can cry out Abba, daddy, father, 00:40:26.82\00:40:30.49 because God is our father. 00:40:30.53\00:40:32.73 He wants you to be His child. 00:40:32.76\00:40:34.90 He brings you out of the land of sin, 00:40:34.93\00:40:37.13 and addiction, and bondage 00:40:37.17\00:40:38.93 because He wants you to know 00:40:38.97\00:40:40.30 and experience that He alone is the only true God. 00:40:40.34\00:40:43.61 You don't have to look to other people. 00:40:43.64\00:40:45.17 You don't have to look to self-help groups. 00:40:45.21\00:40:46.98 Although I'm not saying that there is not room for all that, 00:40:47.01\00:40:49.94 but you don't have to look to all of that. 00:40:49.98\00:40:52.28 Look to the Lord Jesus, 00:40:52.31\00:40:53.65 know that He is a God above all gods, 00:40:53.68\00:40:56.02 that when He sets you free, 00:40:56.05\00:40:57.59 when the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. 00:40:57.62\00:41:01.16 Why does He bring you out of Egypt? 00:41:01.19\00:41:02.52 Because He loves you. 00:41:02.56\00:41:03.89 You might feel like, "Who loves me? 00:41:03.93\00:41:05.36 Nobody loves me. I'm alone. 00:41:05.39\00:41:09.40 I was abused. 00:41:09.43\00:41:10.77 I have this horrible past and nobody even loves me." 00:41:10.80\00:41:13.87 But yet the Lord loves you. 00:41:13.90\00:41:15.80 And you might say, "Well, Jesus loves me." 00:41:15.84\00:41:17.27 But no, the Word of God says the Father Himself loves you. 00:41:17.31\00:41:22.24 God loves you. 00:41:22.28\00:41:23.61 He wants to redeem you because He loves you. 00:41:23.65\00:41:25.18 He wants to redeem you and set you free. 00:41:25.21\00:41:27.85 That word redeem, to buy you back 00:41:27.88\00:41:30.65 from the land of the enemy, to set you free. 00:41:30.69\00:41:33.32 He wants to dwell with you. 00:41:33.36\00:41:34.76 Not just say I'm going to set you free 00:41:34.79\00:41:36.16 and then turn your loose and you live in this world 00:41:36.19\00:41:38.06 and do your own thing. 00:41:38.09\00:41:39.43 No, He wants to dwell with you 00:41:39.46\00:41:42.50 by the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:41:42.53\00:41:44.37 He wants to be your God, 00:41:44.40\00:41:46.30 and He wants to give us the heavenly Canaan. 00:41:46.33\00:41:48.14 I love that. 00:41:48.17\00:41:49.50 Not just the Canaan that the Israelites have, 00:41:49.54\00:41:51.87 but we have our heavenly land that 00:41:51.91\00:41:55.04 we are looking forward to. 00:41:55.08\00:41:56.41 We're just pilgrims and sojourners here today 00:41:56.44\00:42:00.12 but coming soon, 00:42:00.15\00:42:01.48 Jesus is coming and we will have an eternity 00:42:01.52\00:42:04.32 in our heavenly Canaan. 00:42:04.35\00:42:06.52 Now, let's look quickly, 00:42:06.55\00:42:07.89 we're going to make a transition to the connection 00:42:07.92\00:42:09.96 between the Sabbath, the fourth Commandment 00:42:09.99\00:42:13.26 and redemption 00:42:13.29\00:42:14.63 because there again we see this deliverance from bondage. 00:42:14.66\00:42:18.00 Let's look at Deuteronomy 5. 00:42:18.03\00:42:20.17 Deuteronomy Chapter 5, 00:42:20.20\00:42:21.54 of course, is the regiving of the Ten Commandments. 00:42:21.57\00:42:24.37 This is the renewing of the covenant. 00:42:24.41\00:42:27.04 Of course, it was originally given in Exodus 19:20, 00:42:27.08\00:42:30.08 Ten Commandments. 00:42:30.11\00:42:31.45 But then now we come to Deuteronomy 5, 00:42:31.48\00:42:33.62 and we see this renewing of the covenant. 00:42:33.65\00:42:36.38 The heart of the Ten Commandment law 00:42:36.42\00:42:38.75 is the Sabbath Commandment, the fourth Commandment. 00:42:38.79\00:42:41.39 And in Deuteronomy 5:12, 00:42:41.42\00:42:43.29 "Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy 00:42:43.32\00:42:45.39 as the Lord your God commanded you. 00:42:45.43\00:42:47.60 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 00:42:47.63\00:42:49.63 but the seventh day 00:42:49.66\00:42:51.00 is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. 00:42:51.03\00:42:53.07 In it, you shall not do any work." 00:42:53.10\00:42:54.57 And it goes on to that, jump down to verse 15, 00:42:54.60\00:42:57.61 "Remember, you were a slave in the land of Egypt, 00:42:57.64\00:43:01.64 and the Lord your God brought you out 00:43:01.68\00:43:04.68 from there by a mighty hand and by an 00:43:04.71\00:43:06.88 outstretched arm. 00:43:06.92\00:43:08.62 Therefore the Lord your God 00:43:08.65\00:43:10.12 commanded you to keep the Sabbath day." 00:43:10.15\00:43:13.59 So what does this mean? 00:43:13.62\00:43:15.19 Every Sabbath, when we have the privilege 00:43:15.22\00:43:18.69 and opportunity to spend it with Jesus, 00:43:18.73\00:43:21.93 celebrate those 24 hours that He consecrated 00:43:21.96\00:43:25.10 and set apart and made holy. 00:43:25.13\00:43:27.64 We have opportunity to remember. 00:43:27.67\00:43:29.77 God's the one who redeemed us. 00:43:29.80\00:43:31.34 God's the one who set us free. 00:43:31.37\00:43:33.31 Every week, we have reminder that God's our God 00:43:33.34\00:43:36.68 and that we don't save ourselves. 00:43:36.71\00:43:38.21 We have a reminder that 00:43:38.25\00:43:39.58 He can deliver us and set us free from 00:43:39.61\00:43:41.68 those sins that so easily beset us. 00:43:41.72\00:43:44.65 We've a reminder that 00:43:44.69\00:43:46.02 we are saved by grace through faith. 00:43:46.05\00:43:48.19 Now, you might be saying, "But that's not me. 00:43:48.22\00:43:50.43 And I'm stuck in sin and I'm stuck in bondage." 00:43:50.46\00:43:52.89 Where my favorite scripture is 1 Corinthians 6:9-11. 00:43:52.93\00:43:57.47 We won't read it all, 00:43:57.50\00:43:58.83 but Paul talks about the unrighteous 00:43:58.87\00:44:00.64 not inheriting the Kingdom of God 00:44:00.67\00:44:02.64 and he goes this whole list of horrible sins. 00:44:02.67\00:44:05.44 And when you read it, I think, "I've done a few of those. 00:44:05.47\00:44:08.84 I've been there in a few of those." 00:44:08.88\00:44:11.08 But it doesn't stop there. 00:44:11.11\00:44:12.45 It says, "In such" or "some of you, 00:44:12.48\00:44:14.62 but you were washed, but you were sanctified, 00:44:14.65\00:44:18.39 but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus 00:44:18.42\00:44:21.32 and by the Spirit of our God." 00:44:21.36\00:44:22.89 That means no matter what your past, 00:44:22.92\00:44:24.69 no matter what you have done, the Lord Jesus can redeem you. 00:44:24.73\00:44:27.93 The Lord Jesus can deliver you from bondage, 00:44:27.96\00:44:30.67 and He can set you free. 00:44:30.70\00:44:32.77 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:44:32.80\00:44:34.14 Thank you so much. 00:44:34.17\00:44:35.50 Just hearing all of this about law and grace, 00:44:35.54\00:44:37.11 it's just so exciting because we are a people of God. 00:44:37.14\00:44:41.98 And if we are a people of God, we are people of His law 00:44:42.01\00:44:44.95 and because we are saved by grace, 00:44:44.98\00:44:47.12 obviously that should be, the natural response 00:44:47.15\00:44:49.58 should be to want to keep His law. 00:44:49.62\00:44:52.12 I'm Ryan Day, and I have Thursday's lesson entitled, 00:44:52.15\00:44:56.39 Not For Your Righteousness. 00:44:56.42\00:45:00.26 Before I get into that though, 00:45:00.30\00:45:01.63 as I was listening to all of this law and grace talk, 00:45:01.66\00:45:04.07 it reminded me of an old illustration that 00:45:04.10\00:45:05.73 I heard from C.D Brooks. 00:45:05.77\00:45:07.64 C.D Brooks is one of my favorite speakers. 00:45:07.67\00:45:09.64 And I love C.D Brooks and he gave this illustration. 00:45:09.67\00:45:11.67 So I'm going to give you six words, 00:45:11.71\00:45:13.04 write it down if you're at home. 00:45:13.07\00:45:14.41 These six words are powerful 00:45:14.44\00:45:15.78 because you can use this illustration 00:45:15.81\00:45:17.15 at your own church here, very simple. 00:45:17.18\00:45:19.01 So if the first word is Law, the second word is Sin, 00:45:19.05\00:45:22.68 the third word, Grace, 00:45:22.72\00:45:24.89 the fourth word, Jesus, 00:45:24.92\00:45:27.22 fifth word, Gospel, 00:45:27.26\00:45:29.22 sixth word, Church. 00:45:29.26\00:45:31.23 All right, now follow this train of thought. 00:45:31.26\00:45:32.63 We have Law, Sin, Grace, Jesus, Gospel, Church. 00:45:32.66\00:45:36.20 We are the church, right? 00:45:36.23\00:45:38.17 We are God's Church, 00:45:38.20\00:45:39.87 and we go to church to hear the gospel, 00:45:39.90\00:45:43.20 and we are commissioned to preach the gospel, right? 00:45:43.24\00:45:46.61 And that gospel, of course, 00:45:46.64\00:45:47.98 is the good news of Jesus Christ. 00:45:48.01\00:45:51.01 Jesus Christ is our Savior, 00:45:51.05\00:45:52.85 who came to save us by His grace. 00:45:52.88\00:45:56.05 And because He has come to save us 00:45:56.08\00:45:57.42 by His grace, 00:45:57.45\00:45:58.79 we need that grace because we have sinned. 00:45:58.82\00:46:01.72 And that sin, the Bible says, "Is transgression of the law." 00:46:01.76\00:46:05.63 Okay, now let's take that backwards now. 00:46:05.66\00:46:07.76 There are many people in the world that say, 00:46:07.80\00:46:09.23 "We don't need the law." 00:46:09.26\00:46:10.60 So if you remove the law, then obviously you remove sin. 00:46:10.63\00:46:14.57 The Bible says that it's by the law that 00:46:14.60\00:46:16.60 we have the knowledge of sin. 00:46:16.64\00:46:18.34 So when you remove law, you remove sin, okay, 00:46:18.37\00:46:21.18 because you now can't transgress the law. 00:46:21.21\00:46:22.78 You have no understanding of that. 00:46:22.81\00:46:24.95 So now because you have no sin in your life 00:46:24.98\00:46:26.72 and you have no knowledge of your sin, 00:46:26.75\00:46:28.45 there's no need for grace. 00:46:28.48\00:46:30.15 And so you can't be saved by grace 00:46:30.19\00:46:31.75 and because you can't be saved by grace, 00:46:31.79\00:46:33.59 then there's no need for a Savior. 00:46:33.62\00:46:35.22 There's no need for Jesus. 00:46:35.26\00:46:36.59 So by removing the law, you remove sin. 00:46:36.62\00:46:38.59 You remove grace, you remove Jesus Christ, 00:46:38.63\00:46:41.53 the giver of grace, the Savior. 00:46:41.56\00:46:43.47 And, of course, because now you've removed Jesus, 00:46:43.50\00:46:45.90 you have no good news. 00:46:45.93\00:46:47.27 You have no gospel, you've removed the gospel, 00:46:47.30\00:46:49.40 and therefore what you're left with is a church 00:46:49.44\00:46:51.54 with a whole lot of nothing, 00:46:51.57\00:46:54.14 all because you removed the law. 00:46:54.18\00:46:56.18 That's how important the law is, my friends. 00:46:56.21\00:46:57.55 We're not saved by the law, 00:46:57.58\00:46:58.91 but we're certainly saved by His grace 00:46:58.95\00:47:00.68 and because we're saved by His grace, 00:47:00.72\00:47:02.28 we want to keep that law. 00:47:02.32\00:47:03.65 And that launches us into Thursday's message, 00:47:03.69\00:47:05.69 Not for Your Righteousness, 00:47:05.72\00:47:07.19 one of the central themes to Christianity in general. 00:47:07.22\00:47:09.82 In all of the Biblical message that we find in the Bible, 00:47:09.86\00:47:13.36 of course, is the message 00:47:13.40\00:47:14.73 and the truth of justification by faith alone. 00:47:14.76\00:47:18.10 I can't emphasize that enough, justification by faith alone. 00:47:18.13\00:47:20.87 We're talking about righteousness by faith, 00:47:20.90\00:47:24.54 Roman 4:3 tells us. 00:47:24.57\00:47:26.44 And there's many people that say, 00:47:26.47\00:47:27.81 "Oh, there's no grace in the Old Testament. 00:47:27.84\00:47:29.44 Grace doesn't come until the New Testament 00:47:29.48\00:47:32.88 when Jesus dies on the cross." 00:47:32.91\00:47:34.25 But we see there very clearly that, 00:47:34.28\00:47:35.82 of course, Abraham indeed was saved by grace. 00:47:35.85\00:47:38.65 We see that in Romans 4:3. 00:47:38.69\00:47:40.49 Notice what the Bible says, it says, 00:47:40.52\00:47:42.06 "For what saith the Scripture Abraham believed God, 00:47:42.09\00:47:45.69 and it was counted unto him for," what? 00:47:45.73\00:47:48.20 "For righteous." 00:47:48.23\00:47:49.80 Okay, so he was saved by grace through faith. 00:47:49.83\00:47:52.40 He was accounted righteous because he believed, 00:47:52.43\00:47:54.94 he trusted in God. 00:47:54.97\00:47:56.30 He trusted in His Word. 00:47:56.34\00:47:57.87 In fact, I love this quote from, 00:47:57.91\00:47:59.24 The Faith I live By, page 109. 00:47:59.27\00:48:01.58 Ellen White makes it very, very clear 00:48:01.61\00:48:03.11 as to what this justification by faith is. 00:48:03.14\00:48:05.61 So she says here... 00:48:05.65\00:48:07.38 Again, this is The Faith I live By, page 109. 00:48:07.42\00:48:09.72 She says, "What is justification by faith? 00:48:09.75\00:48:12.09 It is the work of God, 00:48:12.12\00:48:13.46 in laying the glory of man in the dust, 00:48:13.49\00:48:16.36 and doing for men what, 00:48:16.39\00:48:17.99 that which is not in his power to do for himself." 00:48:18.03\00:48:22.30 When men see their own nothingness, 00:48:22.33\00:48:25.10 they are prepared to be clothed 00:48:25.13\00:48:27.17 with the righteousness of Christ. 00:48:27.20\00:48:29.84 I love that, The Faith I live By, page 109. 00:48:29.87\00:48:32.91 And this is obviously put clear on display. 00:48:32.94\00:48:35.24 This message is found in the Book of Deuteronomy 00:48:35.28\00:48:38.01 very, very clearly. 00:48:38.05\00:48:39.38 I'm gonna read that right now. 00:48:39.41\00:48:40.75 We're going to read Deuteronomy Chapter 9, 00:48:40.78\00:48:42.12 and we're going to go and read verses 1 through 6. 00:48:42.15\00:48:44.29 Deuteronomy 9:1-6, notice what God says to Israel. 00:48:44.32\00:48:49.36 This is a powerful message. 00:48:49.39\00:48:51.46 He says, "Hear, O Israel: 00:48:51.49\00:48:52.83 You are to cross over the Jordan today, 00:48:52.86\00:48:55.30 and go in to dispossess nations greater 00:48:55.33\00:48:57.83 and mightier than yourself, 00:48:57.87\00:48:59.20 cities great and fortified up to heaven, 00:48:59.23\00:49:01.70 a people great and tall, 00:49:01.74\00:49:03.07 the descendants of the Anakim, 00:49:03.10\00:49:05.31 whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, 00:49:05.34\00:49:09.18 'Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?' 00:49:09.21\00:49:13.01 Therefore understand today 00:49:13.05\00:49:14.98 that the Lord your God is He who goes over 00:49:15.02\00:49:16.92 before you as a consuming fire. 00:49:16.95\00:49:19.49 He will destroy them and bring them down before you, 00:49:19.52\00:49:22.49 so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, 00:49:22.52\00:49:25.83 as the Lord has said to you." 00:49:25.86\00:49:27.60 Now, notice verses 4 and onward, this is powerful. 00:49:27.63\00:49:30.00 He says, "Do not think in your heart, 00:49:30.03\00:49:32.33 after the Lord your God has cast them out 00:49:32.37\00:49:35.20 before you, saying, 00:49:35.24\00:49:36.57 'Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me 00:49:36.60\00:49:39.47 in to possess this land', 00:49:39.51\00:49:40.98 but it is because of the wickedness 00:49:41.01\00:49:43.11 of these nations that the Lord 00:49:43.14\00:49:44.58 is driving them out before you." 00:49:44.61\00:49:47.15 Verse 5, "It is not because of your righteousness 00:49:47.18\00:49:51.79 or the uprightness of your heart that 00:49:51.82\00:49:54.39 you go in to possess their land, 00:49:54.42\00:49:56.32 but because of the wickedness of these nations 00:49:56.36\00:49:58.53 that the Lord your God 00:49:58.56\00:49:59.89 drives them out from before you, 00:49:59.93\00:50:02.60 and that He may fulfill the word 00:50:02.63\00:50:04.23 which the Lord swore to your fathers, 00:50:04.27\00:50:05.93 to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 00:50:05.97\00:50:08.60 Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not 00:50:08.64\00:50:11.34 giving you this good land to possess 00:50:11.37\00:50:13.61 because of your righteousness." 00:50:13.64\00:50:15.64 We have that three times, your righteousness, 00:50:15.68\00:50:17.81 your righteousness, your righteousness. 00:50:17.85\00:50:19.51 He says, "For you are a stiff-necked people." 00:50:19.55\00:50:22.82 You know, as I was going through this 00:50:22.85\00:50:24.19 and I was hearing this, you know, 00:50:24.22\00:50:25.55 you can't claim that saying, 00:50:25.59\00:50:26.92 don't say to anybody, 00:50:26.96\00:50:28.29 "I've done this, my righteousness. 00:50:28.32\00:50:30.19 I'm the one that claim this." 00:50:30.23\00:50:31.59 As I was reading through this passage 00:50:31.63\00:50:33.13 it brought to my mind... 00:50:33.16\00:50:34.56 I'm a musical person. 00:50:34.60\00:50:35.93 I love to sing and I love good gospel music. 00:50:35.96\00:50:37.73 And the song that came to my mind, 00:50:37.77\00:50:39.27 was the song that Bill Gaither wrote, 00:50:39.30\00:50:40.77 Sinner saved by grace, 00:50:40.80\00:50:42.34 because the second verse is powerful. 00:50:42.37\00:50:43.97 It's so beautiful. 00:50:44.01\00:50:45.34 It says, How could I boast of anything 00:50:45.37\00:50:49.71 I've ever seen or done I love that. 00:50:49.74\00:50:53.72 How could I dare 00:50:53.75\00:50:55.78 To claim as mine the victories 00:50:55.82\00:50:59.32 God has won 00:50:59.35\00:51:01.96 Where would I be 00:51:01.99\00:51:03.73 Had God not brought me 00:51:03.76\00:51:07.16 Gently to this place 00:51:07.20\00:51:10.43 I'm here to say I'm nothing 00:51:10.47\00:51:13.50 But a sinner saved by grace 00:51:13.54\00:51:18.87 I love that, right? 00:51:18.91\00:51:20.34 The message of that song 00:51:20.38\00:51:21.71 and that's essentially the message 00:51:21.74\00:51:23.08 that God is communicating. 00:51:23.11\00:51:24.45 Here, He's saying, "Look, it's not because of you. 00:51:24.48\00:51:26.48 You didn't do it. I did it. 00:51:26.51\00:51:28.28 It's not because of you. 00:51:28.32\00:51:29.65 It's because of the wickedness of these nations 00:51:29.68\00:51:31.15 and I'm doing the work among you." 00:51:31.19\00:51:33.15 We find the same beautiful example of righteousness 00:51:33.19\00:51:37.16 by faith, justification by faith, 00:51:37.19\00:51:39.33 of understanding that it's not 00:51:39.36\00:51:41.06 because of our righteousness but because of God. 00:51:41.10\00:51:42.96 We see this even in the conversion of Isaiah 00:51:43.00\00:51:44.80 in Chapter 6. 00:51:44.83\00:51:46.17 It says there, it says, 00:51:46.20\00:51:47.54 "In the year that king Uzziah died..." 00:51:47.57\00:51:48.90 This is Isaiah 6:1. 00:51:48.94\00:51:50.27 We're also going to read verses 4 and 5. 00:51:50.31\00:51:52.34 It says, "In the year that king Uzziah died, 00:51:52.37\00:51:54.08 I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, 00:51:54.11\00:51:56.44 high and lifted up," 00:51:56.48\00:51:58.25 okay, high and lifted up, 00:51:58.28\00:51:59.81 "and the train of his robe filled the temple 00:51:59.85\00:52:01.78 and the post of the door 00:52:01.82\00:52:03.15 were shaken by the voice of him, 00:52:03.18\00:52:04.52 who cried out, 00:52:04.55\00:52:05.89 and the house was filled with smoke." 00:52:05.92\00:52:07.26 And then notice the response, right, of Isaiah, 00:52:07.29\00:52:09.02 "So I said, Woe is me! 00:52:09.06\00:52:11.03 for I am undone 00:52:11.06\00:52:12.39 because I am a man of unclean lips 00:52:12.43\00:52:13.76 and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips 00:52:13.80\00:52:15.53 for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts." 00:52:15.56\00:52:19.60 It's beautiful to see here that it was 00:52:19.63\00:52:21.10 because of God's righteousness. 00:52:21.14\00:52:22.77 He saw God's righteousness, Him high and lifted up, 00:52:22.80\00:52:25.67 that brought about this repentant response from him. 00:52:25.71\00:52:28.28 "Woe is me." 00:52:28.31\00:52:29.64 He saw God's righteousness, and in return, 00:52:29.68\00:52:31.95 what did he see after he saw God's righteous? 00:52:31.98\00:52:33.95 He saw his own unrighteousness. 00:52:33.98\00:52:36.12 He saw his filthy rags as we see there 00:52:36.15\00:52:38.55 in Isaiah Chapter 64, 00:52:38.59\00:52:39.95 "Our righteousness is like," what? 00:52:39.99\00:52:41.69 "It's like filthy rags." 00:52:41.72\00:52:43.73 It's His righteousness, and we obtain 00:52:43.76\00:52:45.99 His righteousness by our faith. 00:52:46.03\00:52:49.36 Oh what does the third angel's message say? 00:52:49.40\00:52:51.60 "Here was the patience of the saints here 00:52:51.63\00:52:52.97 they keep the commandments of God 00:52:53.00\00:52:54.34 and the faith of Jesus' righteousness," 00:52:54.37\00:52:57.24 His righteousness by his faith, my friends. 00:52:57.27\00:53:00.38 And, Pastor, you read earlier Ephesians 2:1-8, 00:53:00.41\00:53:03.91 "It is for by grace you have been 00:53:03.95\00:53:05.41 saved through faith, not of yourselves." 00:53:05.45\00:53:08.08 Can we echo that again? 00:53:08.12\00:53:09.58 "Not of yourselves?" 00:53:09.62\00:53:11.42 It is the gift of God not of works, 00:53:11.45\00:53:13.92 lest anyone should boast. 00:53:13.96\00:53:15.62 And to think that we could add anything to 00:53:15.66\00:53:18.43 what Jesus has done. 00:53:18.46\00:53:19.89 Have mercy, my friends. 00:53:19.93\00:53:21.90 This plan was established in Christ before time began, 00:53:21.93\00:53:26.60 before the foundation of the world. 00:53:26.63\00:53:27.97 2 Timothy 1:9, I love that verse. 00:53:28.00\00:53:30.54 But share with me in the goodness... 00:53:30.57\00:53:32.34 This is the end of verse 8. 00:53:32.37\00:53:33.71 It says, "But share with me in the sufferings 00:53:33.74\00:53:35.41 for the gospel according to the power of God." 00:53:35.44\00:53:37.45 Verse 9, "Who has saved us and called us 00:53:37.48\00:53:40.28 with the holy calling, not according to our works 00:53:40.32\00:53:44.59 but according to His own purpose and grace, 00:53:44.62\00:53:46.89 which was given to us in Christ Jesus," when? 00:53:46.92\00:53:50.43 "Before time began." 00:53:50.46\00:53:51.79 When was this plan established? 00:53:51.83\00:53:53.26 When was the everlasting covenant put into place? 00:53:53.29\00:53:55.86 When was the everlasting gospel put into place? 00:53:55.90\00:53:58.20 It wasn't when this world had begun, my friends. 00:53:58.23\00:54:00.37 It was well before this world had ever begun. 00:54:00.40\00:54:02.47 Jesus Christ stepped up to the plate. 00:54:02.50\00:54:04.74 He said, "Father, if anything goes South, 00:54:04.77\00:54:07.48 I want to put a plan in place, 00:54:07.51\00:54:08.94 where I step in, and I die for My people." 00:54:08.98\00:54:12.25 That's why I love 2 Corinthians 5:21, 00:54:12.28\00:54:15.32 beautiful verse, "For he made him, 00:54:15.35\00:54:17.29 who knew no sin to be sin for us that 00:54:17.32\00:54:20.89 we might become 00:54:20.92\00:54:22.26 the righteousness of God in Him." 00:54:22.29\00:54:24.33 So, my friends, we are saved not 00:54:24.36\00:54:26.46 because of our works, 00:54:26.49\00:54:27.86 not because of our righteousness, 00:54:27.90\00:54:29.73 not for your righteousness, 00:54:29.76\00:54:32.00 but for the righteousness of Christ 00:54:32.03\00:54:34.14 by the righteousness of Jesus Christ. 00:54:34.17\00:54:36.67 It is Jesus who died on the cross. 00:54:36.71\00:54:38.67 He completed the work. 00:54:38.71\00:54:40.14 What in the world are you going to add to that? 00:54:40.18\00:54:42.84 Amen. Wow! 00:54:42.88\00:54:44.91 It's powerful. Roll on. 00:54:44.95\00:54:47.62 Shelley Quinn, give us a summary of your day. 00:54:47.65\00:54:50.39 Well, I just have to say one thing. 00:54:50.42\00:54:52.69 Even Noah... 00:54:52.72\00:54:54.06 According to Hebrews 11:7, 00:54:54.09\00:54:58.13 "Even Noah became 00:54:58.16\00:55:00.40 the heir of righteousness by faith." 00:55:00.43\00:55:02.93 God's covenant relationship with His people has always been 00:55:02.96\00:55:08.17 about grace and law. 00:55:08.20\00:55:10.27 And the bottom line is this. 00:55:10.31\00:55:13.27 Everything about our salvation is by grace. 00:55:13.31\00:55:16.44 We can't return it, 00:55:16.48\00:55:18.08 but when God puts His law in our hearts, 00:55:18.11\00:55:22.42 He will even by grace cause us to obey 00:55:22.45\00:55:27.02 as He works in us to will 00:55:27.06\00:55:28.52 and to do His good pleasure. 00:55:28.56\00:55:29.89 Amen. Amen. 00:55:29.92\00:55:31.26 James? 00:55:31.29\00:55:32.63 For our good, I mean, that's the bottom line. 00:55:32.66\00:55:34.13 I think of Tuesday's lesson 00:55:34.16\00:55:35.53 God has given us the law for our good. 00:55:35.56\00:55:38.30 Paul says that in Romans Chapter 7, 00:55:38.33\00:55:39.67 "The law is good." 00:55:39.70\00:55:41.04 It's a good law from a good God, 00:55:41.07\00:55:43.64 who wants only what's best for us. 00:55:43.67\00:55:45.67 Amen. Yes, and Jill? 00:55:45.71\00:55:47.04 Wednesday talk about, 00:55:47.08\00:55:48.41 "Remember you are a slave in Egypt," 00:55:48.44\00:55:49.78 and I'm always reminded of Romans 5:8, 00:55:49.81\00:55:52.88 God demonstrated, commanded His love toward us 00:55:52.91\00:55:55.38 and that's while we were yet still even now sinners, 00:55:55.42\00:55:59.59 Christ died for us. 00:55:59.62\00:56:01.06 So there was nothing in ourselves to reach out and say, 00:56:01.09\00:56:04.09 "God love me. God changed me." 00:56:04.13\00:56:06.36 He demonstrated His love. He reached out first. 00:56:06.39\00:56:09.56 He loved us first and all we have to do 00:56:09.60\00:56:12.70 is reach out and respond to His love. 00:56:12.73\00:56:15.44 Amen. Beautiful. 00:56:15.47\00:56:16.81 We talked a lot about the everlasting covenant and, 00:56:16.84\00:56:19.87 you know, it's worth mentioning 00:56:19.91\00:56:21.24 over and over and over again because it's that important. 00:56:21.28\00:56:23.85 Hebrews 13:20-21, I just have to say this. 00:56:23.88\00:56:27.45 It says, "Now may the God of peace 00:56:27.48\00:56:29.52 who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead that 00:56:29.55\00:56:32.82 great shepherd of the sheep, 00:56:32.85\00:56:34.66 through the blood of the everlasting covenant." 00:56:34.69\00:56:37.46 And as Shelley has mentioned so many times, 00:56:37.49\00:56:39.09 when was that everlasting covenant 00:56:39.13\00:56:40.63 put into place? 00:56:40.66\00:56:42.00 Revelation 13:8, 00:56:42.03\00:56:43.37 "From the foundation of the world, 00:56:43.40\00:56:44.73 the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world." 00:56:44.77\00:56:47.07 But it goes on to say in verse 21 of Hebrews 13, 00:56:47.10\00:56:50.04 "Make you complete 00:56:50.07\00:56:51.57 in every good work to do His will, 00:56:51.61\00:56:55.28 working in you 00:56:55.31\00:56:56.64 what is well pleasing in His sight." 00:56:56.68\00:56:59.08 And who does this work? 00:56:59.11\00:57:00.82 How is that accomplished? 00:57:00.85\00:57:02.28 "Through Jesus Christ, 00:57:02.32\00:57:04.35 to whom be glory forever and ever, Amen." 00:57:04.39\00:57:07.62 That's a two-hander. Amen. 00:57:07.66\00:57:10.16 That's right. 00:57:10.19\00:57:11.56 I hope we have made it abundantly clear. 00:57:11.59\00:57:14.56 One, God's law is eternal. 00:57:14.60\00:57:17.67 God's character is eternal. 00:57:17.70\00:57:20.24 God's grace is eternal. 00:57:20.27\00:57:22.94 We will need them throughout this life 00:57:22.97\00:57:25.77 until the day 00:57:25.81\00:57:27.14 we are perfected in His righteousness. 00:57:27.18\00:57:30.65 Romans 5, which each one of us has quoted a portion of it, 00:57:30.68\00:57:34.12 here's how we combined law and grace. 00:57:34.15\00:57:36.48 Romans 5:20, "Moreover the law entered 00:57:36.52\00:57:40.66 that the offense might abound 00:57:40.69\00:57:43.46 but where sin abounded, 00:57:43.49\00:57:47.46 grace abounded much more." 00:57:47.50\00:57:50.13 Praise God for His grace, 00:57:50.17\00:57:52.27 and thank Him for the strength to live 00:57:52.30\00:57:54.24 in harmony with His law. 00:57:54.27\00:57:55.87 Join us for the next lesson number eight about Choose Life. 00:57:55.90\00:58:00.58 Amen. 00:58:00.61\00:58:01.94
