Amen. 00:03:26.47\00:03:28.10 You know, one of my people that 00:03:28.14\00:03:30.97 I really like to hear talk is Clifford Goldstein. 00:03:31.01\00:03:34.58 He always reminds me what's good about New York. 00:03:34.61\00:03:37.78 And he's got a great New York accent. 00:03:37.81\00:03:40.02 And he's a great writer. 00:03:40.05\00:03:41.65 And we talked about this, 00:03:41.68\00:03:43.08 his writing style was interesting, Jill, 00:03:43.12\00:03:45.59 because it was not necessarily an order, 00:03:45.62\00:03:47.39 but it was in themes. 00:03:47.42\00:03:48.76 Yes. 00:03:48.79\00:03:50.13 And this is something we're going to enjoy very much. 00:03:50.16\00:03:51.63 And I like this one because it's about history. 00:03:51.66\00:03:55.46 I've been here at 3ABN now 18 years, 00:03:55.50\00:03:57.93 and I look back and think, "Wow, what a history." 00:03:57.97\00:04:01.57 And we all can take a time to pause in our lives 00:04:01.60\00:04:04.67 when we look at where we are. 00:04:04.71\00:04:06.61 And we pause and ask ourselves the question, 00:04:06.64\00:04:09.98 how did we get there? 00:04:10.01\00:04:11.58 Well, you know, the Lord is so wonderful. 00:04:11.61\00:04:13.45 He declares the end from the beginning. 00:04:13.48\00:04:15.78 And from ancient times, things that are not yet done. 00:04:15.82\00:04:19.52 He took an abandoned child, left at a babysitter, 00:04:19.55\00:04:23.59 and has given him the opportunity 00:04:23.63\00:04:24.99 to be a Son of the Most High God. 00:04:25.03\00:04:27.33 I've talked about that. 00:04:27.36\00:04:28.70 Because I look at the life of Moses, 00:04:28.73\00:04:30.80 I look at the life of Abraham, 00:04:30.83\00:04:32.90 I look at how God's prophets and apostles have been 00:04:32.93\00:04:36.40 able to unfold as a flower in the course of human history. 00:04:36.44\00:04:40.08 And yet, if they were not planted in God, 00:04:40.11\00:04:43.21 it would never have happened. 00:04:43.24\00:04:44.58 Amen. 00:04:44.61\00:04:45.95 You know, the lesson today on Sunday, 00:04:45.98\00:04:48.45 brings out our memory text. 00:04:48.48\00:04:50.29 And it's 1 Corinthians 10:3-4. 00:04:50.32\00:04:53.09 I'll read that for you. 00:04:53.12\00:04:54.46 1 Corinthians 10:3-4. 00:04:54.49\00:04:58.13 And I believe that is it or that's it. 00:04:58.16\00:05:00.93 Am I correct? 00:05:00.96\00:05:02.30 I thought I was correct. 00:05:02.33\00:05:03.67 1 Corinthians 10:3-4. 00:05:03.70\00:05:05.43 Notice, and this is a history passage, 00:05:05.47\00:05:08.84 Paul the Apostle taking a clip out of the life 00:05:08.87\00:05:12.11 and the journey of the children of Israel. 00:05:12.14\00:05:14.54 The Bible says in verse three, 00:05:14.58\00:05:16.41 "All at the same spiritual food, 00:05:16.44\00:05:19.31 all drank the same spiritual drink, 00:05:19.35\00:05:23.35 for they drank of that spiritual rock 00:05:23.39\00:05:25.82 that follow them, and that rock was Christ." 00:05:25.85\00:05:30.33 I believe that we're going to each deal 00:05:30.36\00:05:32.03 with portions of 1 Corinthians 10. 00:05:32.06\00:05:35.60 But Deuteronomy is a history lesson. 00:05:35.63\00:05:37.97 When you study Deuteronomy, 00:05:38.00\00:05:39.33 look at Exodus you make the comparison. 00:05:39.37\00:05:41.27 Exodus was the book that has recorded 00:05:41.30\00:05:44.64 the early followers of Moses 00:05:44.67\00:05:49.64 as he led them out of the land of Egypt. 00:05:49.68\00:05:53.52 But they had children 00:05:53.55\00:05:55.38 that were clueless about what was taking place. 00:05:55.42\00:05:58.25 Can you imagine the infants 00:05:58.29\00:05:59.62 that came out of the land of Egypt, 00:05:59.65\00:06:01.02 they had no idea where they were going, 00:06:01.06\00:06:02.72 they just knew they were with mom 00:06:02.76\00:06:04.53 or the little boys and girls on the ox cart 00:06:04.56\00:06:07.20 with their dads just enjoying the journey, 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.33 maybe thinking they're on the picnic, 00:06:09.36\00:06:10.97 having no clue that they were being rescued 00:06:11.00\00:06:14.24 from the bondage of the tyranny of the land of Egypt. 00:06:14.27\00:06:18.51 So years later, 00:06:18.54\00:06:20.24 as the torture is passed 00:06:20.28\00:06:21.64 from leadership to leadership, 00:06:21.68\00:06:23.45 these children now grown up, 00:06:23.48\00:06:25.01 and they have to remember 00:06:25.05\00:06:26.65 why they're out here still, 00:06:26.68\00:06:28.22 40 years later in the wilderness, 00:06:28.25\00:06:30.49 "Why are we still out here? 00:06:30.52\00:06:31.99 I thought this is going to be a short day trip. 00:06:32.02\00:06:34.02 Why are we still out here?" 00:06:34.06\00:06:36.12 So what I'm going to do today 00:06:36.16\00:06:37.69 is look at the remembrance of the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:06:37.73\00:06:41.20 The Book of Deuteronomy mentions 00:06:41.23\00:06:43.37 a word remember, 14 times. 00:06:43.40\00:06:47.07 And I thought, how interesting when you talk about history, 00:06:47.10\00:06:50.71 how wonderful it is to tie the two together, 00:06:50.74\00:06:54.34 marry history and remembrance 00:06:54.38\00:06:56.38 from the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:06:56.41\00:06:57.95 But this is a quotation that 00:06:57.98\00:07:00.72 the Lord servant Ellen White records about us. 00:07:00.75\00:07:04.29 And this will segue into the story 00:07:04.32\00:07:06.72 of what I unfold in my six points, 00:07:06.76\00:07:10.79 okay, not nine, but six. 00:07:10.83\00:07:12.66 She says in the book, Live Sketches, page 196. 00:07:12.69\00:07:16.43 She says, "In reviewing our past history, 00:07:16.46\00:07:20.24 having traveled over every step of advance, 00:07:20.27\00:07:23.07 to our present standing, 00:07:23.10\00:07:25.01 I am filled with astonishment 00:07:25.04\00:07:26.71 and with confidence in Christ as leader, 00:07:26.74\00:07:29.41 we have nothing to fear for the future, 00:07:29.44\00:07:32.51 except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us 00:07:32.55\00:07:36.38 and His teaching in our past history." 00:07:36.42\00:07:39.19 And you know when you think about that 00:07:39.22\00:07:40.76 the life of the children of Israel 00:07:40.79\00:07:42.86 are indelibly recorded today for our admonition 00:07:42.89\00:07:46.86 as Paul says on whom 00:07:46.90\00:07:48.23 the ends of the world is come. 00:07:48.26\00:07:51.70 The end of the age has come. 00:07:51.73\00:07:54.10 But one of the first things 00:07:54.14\00:07:55.47 I want to point out is an Exodus 32:29. 00:07:55.50\00:07:58.07 And then we're going to go into the six points. 00:07:58.11\00:08:00.18 But this is interesting 00:08:00.21\00:08:02.01 because in the history of Moses, 00:08:02.04\00:08:04.01 he gave instruction to the children of Israel. 00:08:04.05\00:08:06.51 And this instruction is pertinent to us today. 00:08:06.55\00:08:09.52 In Exodus 32: 29, Moses said, 00:08:09.55\00:08:13.39 "Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord that 00:08:13.42\00:08:18.49 He may bestow on you a blessing this day, 00:08:18.53\00:08:21.76 for every man has opposed His son and His brother." 00:08:21.80\00:08:27.17 Now it came to pass on the next day. 00:08:27.20\00:08:29.50 Then Moses said to the people, in verse 30, 00:08:29.54\00:08:32.74 "You have committed a great sin. 00:08:32.77\00:08:34.78 So now I will go up to the Lord, 00:08:34.81\00:08:36.95 perhaps I can make atonement for your sin." 00:08:36.98\00:08:40.05 Verse 31, "Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, 00:08:40.08\00:08:44.12 'Oh, these people have committed a great sin 00:08:44.15\00:08:46.35 and have made for themselves a god of gold. 00:08:46.39\00:08:49.36 Yet now, in verse 32, 00:08:49.39\00:08:50.76 if you will forgive their sins, 00:08:50.79\00:08:52.19 but if not, I pray, blot me out of your book, 00:08:52.23\00:08:55.53 which you have written.'" 00:08:55.56\00:08:57.47 Now some people don't grab it here but, 00:08:57.50\00:08:59.90 in this context, 00:08:59.93\00:09:01.47 Moses was somewhat of a mediator 00:09:01.50\00:09:04.21 between Israel and God 00:09:04.24\00:09:07.14 because he was seeking to atone. 00:09:07.18\00:09:09.68 He said, 'Lord, 00:09:09.71\00:09:11.05 if you don't blot their sins out, 00:09:11.08\00:09:12.85 blot my name out.' 00:09:12.88\00:09:14.28 What an exchange, can you imagine that? 00:09:14.32\00:09:16.62 Either you forgive them or just don't let me live. 00:09:16.65\00:09:19.89 I don't want eternal life 00:09:19.92\00:09:21.26 if they're not going to be 00:09:21.29\00:09:23.39 forgiven of their transgression. 00:09:23.43\00:09:25.29 That's a huge decision to make. 00:09:25.33\00:09:27.56 But one of the first things 00:09:27.60\00:09:28.93 he pointed out was consecration. 00:09:28.96\00:09:31.13 And the reason why they had been 00:09:31.17\00:09:33.34 so delirious in their sin is 00:09:33.37\00:09:35.47 because they didn't consecrate their hearts. 00:09:35.50\00:09:37.74 Let me encourage you, 00:09:37.77\00:09:39.11 if you want to be a blessing to someone, 00:09:39.14\00:09:40.48 the first thing you have to do to be 00:09:40.51\00:09:42.08 an instrument in the hands of God, 00:09:42.11\00:09:43.98 is you have to pray for the Lord 00:09:44.01\00:09:45.35 to consecrate your mind, 00:09:45.38\00:09:47.15 your life, your thoughts, 00:09:47.18\00:09:48.52 your words, your deeds, your actions, 00:09:48.55\00:09:50.52 even the things you communicate. 00:09:50.55\00:09:52.55 Say, Lord, consecrate them. 00:09:52.59\00:09:54.66 It's the first criteria 00:09:54.69\00:09:56.83 which is something that has to happen 00:09:56.86\00:09:58.79 by self-examination and self-sacrifice, 00:09:58.83\00:10:02.66 which takes me to the remembrances. 00:10:02.70\00:10:05.43 When the people forgot it was Moses' responsibility 00:10:05.47\00:10:09.97 to remind them. 00:10:10.01\00:10:11.34 Let's look at the first remembrance 00:10:11.37\00:10:12.71 Deuteronomy 5:15. 00:10:12.74\00:10:15.21 Deuteronomy 5:15, the first remember, 00:10:15.24\00:10:18.38 "And remember that you were a slave 00:10:18.41\00:10:21.58 in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God 00:10:21.62\00:10:24.02 brought you out from there by a mighty hand 00:10:24.05\00:10:27.59 and by an outstretched arm, 00:10:27.62\00:10:29.22 therefore the Lord your God commanded you 00:10:29.26\00:10:32.63 to keep the Sabbath day." 00:10:32.66\00:10:35.93 You know, that's something amazing. 00:10:35.96\00:10:37.30 He said God didn't bring you out on a wimp around, 00:10:37.33\00:10:39.93 he brought you out with a mighty hand. 00:10:39.97\00:10:41.84 He stood up against a monolith of a nation, 00:10:41.87\00:10:45.04 the Egyptian army, 00:10:45.07\00:10:46.44 one of the strongest nations of that time, 00:10:46.47\00:10:50.15 the Lord brought them out with the mighty hand. 00:10:50.18\00:10:51.91 So he had the right to ask them and to command them. 00:10:51.95\00:10:55.12 "I do this for you. 00:10:55.15\00:10:56.52 I'm commanding you to do this because of that." 00:10:56.55\00:11:00.06 The remembrance was, 00:11:00.09\00:11:01.42 "You used to be slaves, now you're free. 00:11:01.46\00:11:03.59 And the end the parameter of your freedom is obedience, 00:11:03.63\00:11:07.86 obedience to My commandments, obedience to the Sabbath day." 00:11:07.90\00:11:12.10 The second one, the second obedience, 00:11:12.13\00:11:13.90 or the second remembrance is Deuteronomy 7:18. 00:11:13.94\00:11:17.51 What does he say? 00:11:17.54\00:11:19.84 "You are not to be afraid of them, 00:11:19.87\00:11:21.91 you shall remember well what the Lord your God 00:11:21.94\00:11:26.31 did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt." 00:11:26.35\00:11:28.65 You know, nobody can fight your battle like God can. 00:11:28.68\00:11:31.49 Amen. 00:11:31.52\00:11:32.85 He says, "If you remember how I fought your past battles, 00:11:32.89\00:11:35.66 you will never fear your future enemies." 00:11:35.69\00:11:38.66 That's what He was saying to them. 00:11:38.69\00:11:40.03 "Don't worry about what's ahead of you. 00:11:40.06\00:11:41.40 Remember what I did in Egypt. 00:11:41.43\00:11:42.76 So when you get to the promised land, 00:11:42.80\00:11:44.13 when you get to the border, 00:11:44.17\00:11:45.50 and you meet up the Amalekites and Hittites and Jebusites, 00:11:45.53\00:11:47.64 and Amorites, and Hittites and Hivites, 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.54 and all the other ites that are there, 00:11:49.57\00:11:51.67 "Hey, don't feel like this is a point of defeat. 00:11:51.71\00:11:54.64 Just remember what I did in the past." 00:11:54.68\00:11:57.01 The third remember is God testing their loyalty, 00:11:57.05\00:12:00.58 God testing their loyalty. 00:12:00.62\00:12:02.95 Deuteronomy 8:2, here's what the Bible says." 00:12:02.98\00:12:06.22 And you shall remember that 00:12:06.25\00:12:07.59 the Lord your God led you all the way 00:12:07.62\00:12:10.99 these 40 years in the wilderness, 00:12:11.03\00:12:14.00 to what, to humble you and test you, 00:12:14.03\00:12:16.73 to know what was in your heart, 00:12:16.77\00:12:18.70 whether you would keep His commandments or not." 00:12:18.73\00:12:21.50 God always test us. 00:12:21.54\00:12:22.87 The third test was a test of loyalty. 00:12:22.90\00:12:25.57 God wants us to be a loyal people. 00:12:25.61\00:12:27.28 And he will bring us to the points of test, 00:12:27.31\00:12:29.58 even though we don't see what's in us. 00:12:29.61\00:12:31.58 I read a quote recently that Ellen White says, 00:12:31.61\00:12:33.95 God will allow us to face trials 00:12:33.98\00:12:36.18 and temptations to reveal in us 00:12:36.22\00:12:37.65 what we didn't even know was there. 00:12:37.69\00:12:39.79 And then he'll give us the opportunity to remedy that 00:12:39.82\00:12:42.72 it says number four, God's provision. 00:12:42.76\00:12:45.33 Deuteronomy 8:18. 00:12:45.36\00:12:47.16 "And you shall remember the Lord your God, 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.10 for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, 00:12:49.13\00:12:51.77 that He may establish His covenant 00:12:51.80\00:12:54.17 which He swore to your fathers, 00:12:54.20\00:12:56.00 as it is this day." 00:12:56.04\00:12:57.97 Some of you successful Christians 00:12:58.01\00:12:59.34 think that is 00:12:59.37\00:13:00.71 because you had a great financial plan, back up. 00:13:00.74\00:13:03.45 You couldn't have a financial plan 00:13:03.48\00:13:04.95 if God didn't give your health. 00:13:04.98\00:13:06.82 It's not your bank account balance, 00:13:06.85\00:13:08.48 it's God's grace balance 00:13:08.52\00:13:10.25 that makes a difference in your life. 00:13:10.29\00:13:11.72 So when you get wealthy, 00:13:11.75\00:13:13.19 don't forget that God is the one 00:13:13.22\00:13:14.86 who gave you that power, 00:13:14.89\00:13:16.22 that strength, that health to get that wealth. 00:13:16.26\00:13:19.13 The next remembrance is Deuteronomy 9:7. 00:13:19.16\00:13:22.73 What about your rebellion?" 00:13:22.76\00:13:24.10 Remember! 00:13:24.13\00:13:25.47 Do not forget how you provoked 00:13:25.50\00:13:27.14 the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. 00:13:27.17\00:13:30.51 From the day that you departed 00:13:30.54\00:13:32.87 from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, 00:13:32.91\00:13:36.44 you have been rebellious against the Lord." 00:13:36.48\00:13:38.41 What a way to pay God back. 00:13:38.45\00:13:40.22 When God is blessing you 00:13:40.25\00:13:41.82 don't pay him back by rebellion. 00:13:41.85\00:13:44.45 And we're all at some point 00:13:44.49\00:13:45.82 or another have been guilty of that. 00:13:45.85\00:13:47.69 And finally, this one 00:13:47.72\00:13:49.06 I like he brings the family in Deuteronomy 32:7, 00:13:49.09\00:13:52.63 he brings in the genealogy, 00:13:52.66\00:13:55.00 if you forget about your roots, 00:13:55.03\00:13:58.43 and start behaving like somebody 00:13:58.47\00:13:59.90 that your parents not proud of, here are words for you. 00:13:59.93\00:14:03.24 Deuteronomy 32:7, "Remember the days of old, 00:14:03.27\00:14:07.14 Consider the years of many generations. 00:14:07.18\00:14:09.51 Ask your father, 00:14:09.54\00:14:10.88 and he will show you, your elders, 00:14:10.91\00:14:12.78 and they will tell you behave like 00:14:12.81\00:14:14.75 somebody that your family 00:14:14.78\00:14:16.48 would be proud of your genealogy." 00:14:16.52\00:14:18.49 Amen. Amen. 00:14:18.52\00:14:19.85 Yeah, good stuff. 00:14:19.89\00:14:21.22 It continues on here in the next lesson, 00:14:21.26\00:14:25.93 which is Monday's lesson. 00:14:25.96\00:14:30.60 Deuteronomy 1:1-6. 00:14:30.63\00:14:33.03 It's really interesting 00:14:33.07\00:14:34.40 because here we have kind of a connection 00:14:34.44\00:14:37.74 with our last week's lessons. 00:14:37.77\00:14:41.04 Deuteronomy 6:1-6. 00:14:41.08\00:14:42.41 Let's just read those verses quickly. 00:14:42.44\00:14:46.18 "These be the words which Moses spake 00:14:46.21\00:14:49.18 unto all Israel on this side Jordan 00:14:49.22\00:14:50.65 in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, 00:14:50.69\00:14:53.12 between Paran, and Tophel, 00:14:53.15\00:14:54.89 and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab. 00:14:54.92\00:14:57.79 And there are 11 days' journey 00:14:57.83\00:15:00.76 from Horeb by the way of mount Seir 00:15:00.80\00:15:02.56 unto Kadesh-Barnea. 00:15:02.60\00:15:05.00 And it came to pass in the fortieth year." 00:15:05.03\00:15:07.40 Eleven days journey, 00:15:07.44\00:15:08.77 let's see, 40 years minus 11 days. 00:15:08.80\00:15:10.97 "In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, 00:15:11.01\00:15:13.14 on the first day of the month, 00:15:13.17\00:15:14.51 that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, 00:15:14.54\00:15:15.94 according unto all that the Lord 00:15:15.98\00:15:17.58 had given him in commandment unto them." 00:15:17.61\00:15:19.78 So just pause here for a second. 00:15:19.81\00:15:22.88 This verse is significant 00:15:22.92\00:15:24.59 because this verse is reminding them 00:15:24.62\00:15:26.96 of the last 40 years of their history. 00:15:26.99\00:15:29.16 This verse right here is reminding them that 00:15:29.19\00:15:32.49 even though the journey was very short. 00:15:32.53\00:15:34.60 Initially, it was supposed to be very short, 00:15:34.63\00:15:36.67 that they have been in the wilderness for 40 years. 00:15:36.70\00:15:39.23 And the reason they've been in the wilderness for 40 years 00:15:39.27\00:15:41.60 is because they refuse to believe the promises of God. 00:15:41.64\00:15:47.54 We talked about that in our earlier lessons, 00:15:47.58\00:15:49.84 the promises of God 00:15:49.88\00:15:51.21 are the basis of the New Covenant, 00:15:51.25\00:15:53.15 the promises of God are the basis 00:15:53.18\00:15:54.52 of all of God's promises or covenants to us. 00:15:54.55\00:15:57.75 The covenant to Abraham was based upon his promises, 00:15:57.79\00:15:59.69 not our promises. 00:15:59.72\00:16:01.06 We talked about how we make bad promises. 00:16:01.09\00:16:03.06 And so these children are being reminded 00:16:03.09\00:16:07.63 of why they have taken 40 years to go on a journey 00:16:07.66\00:16:11.77 that should have just taken a few weeks. 00:16:11.80\00:16:13.80 "Why it takes so long in our lives to get 00:16:13.84\00:16:16.20 to the place God wants us to be. 00:16:16.24\00:16:17.57 Why is it?" 00:16:17.61\00:16:18.94 Because we don't believe His promises? 00:16:18.97\00:16:20.51 We fail, we fall, we fall short. 00:16:20.54\00:16:22.54 We don't trust in the promises of God. 00:16:22.58\00:16:25.61 Instead, we trust in ourselves. 00:16:25.65\00:16:27.02 Even when they didn't go into the Promised Land, 00:16:27.05\00:16:30.59 they decided, "Well, wait a minute, 00:16:30.62\00:16:32.02 wait a minute, maybe God is right, 00:16:32.05\00:16:33.39 maybe we shouldn't do this." 00:16:33.42\00:16:34.76 And they decided, let's try it. 00:16:34.79\00:16:36.32 They were still doing it on their own strength. 00:16:36.36\00:16:38.79 They were still trying it themselves. 00:16:38.83\00:16:40.60 And that's the natural tendency of our fallen human nature, 00:16:40.63\00:16:45.17 self-sufficiency to rely upon ourselves. 00:16:45.20\00:16:48.17 Of course, we as preachers and teachers, 00:16:48.20\00:16:50.31 are just as liable as anyone else to do that. 00:16:50.34\00:16:53.14 As we grow, especially, 00:16:53.17\00:16:55.41 we know the Word of God, 00:16:55.44\00:16:56.78 we've been in the Word of God for so long, 00:16:56.81\00:16:58.15 and we know these things. 00:16:58.18\00:16:59.95 And so we are more liable to not trust into, 00:16:59.98\00:17:04.65 not rest in the Holy Spirit, but to rely upon ourselves. 00:17:04.69\00:17:07.36 And so God reminds us over and over again. 00:17:07.39\00:17:09.09 And he reminds them here in Deuteronomy, 00:17:09.12\00:17:10.86 chapter one, verse three, 00:17:10.89\00:17:12.23 he reminds them of what's going on. 00:17:12.26\00:17:14.56 They've been gone for 40 years 00:17:14.60\00:17:16.50 wandering through the wilderness. 00:17:16.53\00:17:17.87 I don't know if your life has been like that. 00:17:17.90\00:17:20.10 But they are now ready to go in. 00:17:20.14\00:17:22.54 God wants to take them into the Promised Land. 00:17:22.57\00:17:24.51 That's the good news. 00:17:24.54\00:17:25.87 God is wanting to take all of us 00:17:25.91\00:17:27.24 into the Promised Land, so to speak. 00:17:27.28\00:17:30.08 It's time, it's time, it's time. 00:17:30.11\00:17:31.65 And when God's time comes, 00:17:31.68\00:17:33.78 we've got to remember the one lesson 00:17:33.82\00:17:35.45 and that is that God's going to do 00:17:35.48\00:17:37.45 what He promised to do in His time. 00:17:37.49\00:17:39.92 Now we see this all through the Bible. 00:17:39.95\00:17:41.36 I mean, there are time prophecies from Noah 00:17:41.39\00:17:44.89 and the 120 years that He was going to preach, 00:17:44.93\00:17:47.16 coming down to the captivity of Israel in Egypt 130 years, 00:17:47.20\00:17:51.83 and moving into the captivity of Israel 00:17:51.87\00:17:54.44 in Babylon for 7 years. 00:17:54.47\00:17:56.20 And then we've got the time prophecies 00:17:56.24\00:17:57.57 that deal with the Messiah, 00:17:57.61\00:17:58.94 the 2300 day prophecy, broken up into 70 weeks, 00:17:58.97\00:18:02.64 focusing on Christ. 00:18:02.68\00:18:04.25 And then out of that, 00:18:04.28\00:18:05.61 we see the 1290, the 1260 to 1335, 00:18:05.65\00:18:09.22 taking us down to 1844, 00:18:09.25\00:18:11.05 we've got a 1391 and two weeks. 00:18:11.09\00:18:13.12 We've got all kinds of time prophecies in the Bible that 00:18:13.15\00:18:16.49 remind us not have days and years and events 00:18:16.52\00:18:20.63 as much as they are to remind us 00:18:20.66\00:18:22.86 that God is going to accomplish 00:18:22.90\00:18:25.80 what He has promised to accomplish in His time. 00:18:25.83\00:18:30.24 And there's nothing you can do to change that. 00:18:30.27\00:18:32.54 Now we know that God's love 00:18:32.57\00:18:34.11 and we know that God has laid out 00:18:34.14\00:18:36.34 the sequence of prophecy Daniel 2, 00:18:36.38\00:18:38.11 Daniel 7, Daniel 8, Daniel 11, 00:18:38.15\00:18:41.18 all these prophecies were there with Daniel 9, 00:18:41.22\00:18:43.39 to remind us that God has a plan. 00:18:43.42\00:18:45.42 And He wants us, he encourages us, 00:18:45.45\00:18:47.52 He draws us to step into that plan. 00:18:47.56\00:18:50.23 That's what He was doing with the children of Israel. 00:18:50.26\00:18:52.26 That's what He was reminding them of, 00:18:52.29\00:18:54.23 in verse three of Deuteronomy 1. 00:18:54.26\00:18:56.00 "Hey, in the 40th year, 00:18:56.03\00:18:57.37 might the time has come, I told you. 00:18:57.40\00:18:58.73 We're going to be wandering 40 years, 00:18:58.77\00:19:00.10 now it's time to go in." 00:19:00.14\00:19:01.47 And God is doing the same thing with us, friends, 00:19:01.50\00:19:03.54 He's reminding us to all these time prophecies, 00:19:03.57\00:19:06.07 you know, Adventists are in... 00:19:06.11\00:19:07.44 Time prophecy is in our blood. 00:19:07.48\00:19:09.01 We're just into it. 00:19:09.04\00:19:10.38 I mean, and we just can't seem to stop, you know? 00:19:10.41\00:19:12.61 We've been told a time no longer, Revelation 10. 00:19:12.65\00:19:15.58 But we want to keep going. 00:19:15.62\00:19:16.99 But God is telling us something through all of this, 00:19:17.02\00:19:19.25 He's saying, "Listen, I have a time, 00:19:19.29\00:19:21.72 I have a plan, I have a purpose. 00:19:21.76\00:19:23.73 Stick with My plan. 00:19:23.76\00:19:25.09 Don't trust in your own plan." 00:19:25.13\00:19:26.46 When we stick with God's plan, 00:19:26.49\00:19:27.83 it tells us His Word is certain. 00:19:27.86\00:19:29.86 It's sure. It's going to happen. 00:19:29.90\00:19:31.57 And we need that today. 00:19:31.60\00:19:33.30 We need the surety of God's Word today. 00:19:33.34\00:19:35.64 And so what happens is many times 00:19:35.67\00:19:37.07 we step out of God's plan. 00:19:37.11\00:19:38.44 You know, God is love 00:19:38.47\00:19:39.94 and He has a purpose and a plan for us. 00:19:39.97\00:19:42.84 But sometimes we step out of that plan, 00:19:42.88\00:19:44.85 and we see evil and we see wickedness 00:19:44.88\00:19:46.72 and we see pain and sorrow taking place all around us. 00:19:46.75\00:19:49.15 And sometimes we say, 00:19:49.18\00:19:50.52 "Well, that's God's fault, you know, 00:19:50.55\00:19:51.89 God's in control of everything." 00:19:51.92\00:19:53.25 And then we read Daniel 2 and we think, 00:19:53.29\00:19:54.62 "Well, God knows, He sets up kings, 00:19:54.66\00:19:55.99 He brings down kings, 00:19:56.02\00:19:57.36 He knows everything's going to happen, 00:19:57.39\00:19:58.73 He's orchestrated all this." 00:19:58.76\00:20:00.10 No, it's very clear, even in the Lord's prayer. 00:20:00.13\00:20:02.43 Jesus says, "We need to pray to be delivered from evil." 00:20:02.46\00:20:05.27 Well, if God is in charge of everything, 00:20:05.30\00:20:07.70 then we're praying to be delivered from God. 00:20:07.74\00:20:09.90 No, we're not praying to be delivered from God. 00:20:09.94\00:20:11.67 God has a plan. 00:20:11.71\00:20:13.11 And He wants us to get on top of that, 00:20:13.14\00:20:14.88 He wants us to be in harmony with that, 00:20:14.91\00:20:16.24 He wants us to be connected with Him in that plan. 00:20:16.28\00:20:18.51 If we're not, our choices, our decisions individually 00:20:18.55\00:20:22.22 and collectively are going to bring evil. 00:20:22.25\00:20:23.95 And God wants us to pray that 00:20:23.99\00:20:25.62 His kingdom would come on earth as it is in heaven. 00:20:25.65\00:20:29.12 He wants to pray that 00:20:29.16\00:20:30.49 we would be delivered from that evil 00:20:30.53\00:20:32.06 which starts with deliverance from our own self will, 00:20:32.09\00:20:35.26 our own self-sufficiency, 00:20:35.30\00:20:37.00 our reliance on ourselves 00:20:37.03\00:20:38.77 instead over reliance upon God. 00:20:38.80\00:20:40.54 And so God says, 00:20:40.57\00:20:41.90 even if you mess up, remember this now 00:20:41.94\00:20:44.61 because we've been talking about this, 00:20:44.64\00:20:45.97 even if you fail, even if you begin 00:20:46.01\00:20:48.44 by basing my covenant on your promises, 00:20:48.48\00:20:51.75 I can recover you. 00:20:51.78\00:20:53.11 What does it say in Romans 8? 00:20:53.15\00:20:54.75 It says, "All things work together for good." 00:20:54.78\00:20:57.09 Even the bad things? 00:20:57.12\00:20:58.45 Yes, even the bad things that God never intended 00:20:58.49\00:21:00.56 to come on planet Earth, 00:21:00.59\00:21:01.92 even those can work together for good. 00:21:01.96\00:21:04.76 You know, we see that all through the Old Testament. 00:21:04.79\00:21:07.03 We see it in the story of Joseph, 00:21:07.06\00:21:08.40 right, his brothers sold him into Egypt, you know? 00:21:08.43\00:21:10.27 Sold him into slavery, and what did God do, 00:21:10.30\00:21:12.37 He brought redemption out of that, 00:21:12.40\00:21:14.07 not redemption, 00:21:14.10\00:21:15.44 just for Israel and for the world, 00:21:15.47\00:21:17.51 not just physical redemption, 00:21:17.54\00:21:18.91 but He brought 00:21:18.94\00:21:20.28 spiritual redemption out of that. 00:21:20.31\00:21:22.24 He brought Joseph to a place 00:21:22.28\00:21:24.81 where he could forgive his brothers 00:21:24.85\00:21:26.38 before they were even in his presence 00:21:26.41\00:21:28.12 before he even test 00:21:28.15\00:21:29.55 whether or not their characters have changed. 00:21:29.58\00:21:31.75 And that's what he wants to do with us. 00:21:31.79\00:21:33.32 He wants us to follow the lamb, 00:21:33.36\00:21:35.46 to trust in Him, to be in harmony 00:21:35.49\00:21:37.63 with God's plan so that 00:21:37.66\00:21:38.99 we too can see Him work in His time and in His way. 00:21:39.03\00:21:43.77 And the question really is, 00:21:43.80\00:21:45.43 are we going to trust God for that? 00:21:45.47\00:21:47.17 Are we going to look to God for that? 00:21:47.20\00:21:48.94 This is the question 00:21:48.97\00:21:50.31 that needs to be answered for us individually. 00:21:50.34\00:21:51.87 As we look in the lesson study this quarter, 00:21:51.91\00:21:54.44 as we look at this lesson in Deuteronomy, 00:21:54.48\00:21:56.78 we need to recognize the difference 00:21:56.81\00:21:58.15 between God's perfect will and God's permissive will 00:21:58.18\00:22:01.08 Amen. 00:22:01.12\00:22:02.45 We need to recognize the difference between 00:22:02.48\00:22:05.15 what God allows and what God wants for us. 00:22:05.19\00:22:08.16 And we need to recognize that 00:22:08.19\00:22:09.52 because we need to recognize that a lot of the things 00:22:09.56\00:22:11.56 that have taken place on planet Earth are our fault, 00:22:11.59\00:22:14.53 not God's fault. 00:22:14.56\00:22:15.96 And He wants us to recognize that 00:22:16.00\00:22:18.23 all He's ever wanted for us, 00:22:18.27\00:22:20.14 every single moment of every single day 00:22:20.17\00:22:22.24 is only good. 00:22:22.27\00:22:23.61 He's only ever wanted us to be blessed. 00:22:23.64\00:22:26.61 He's only ever wanted us to experience 00:22:26.64\00:22:28.54 what He originally created us for. 00:22:28.58\00:22:30.51 And that revelation is given to us 00:22:30.55\00:22:33.72 as we close out the Book of Revelations, 00:22:33.75\00:22:35.98 we close out the Bible as we look in Revelation 21, 22, 00:22:36.02\00:22:39.59 probably the most neglected chapters 00:22:39.62\00:22:41.26 in the Book of Revelation, if not, in the whole Bible. 00:22:41.29\00:22:43.22 That remind us that this book, this Book of Revelation, 00:22:43.26\00:22:47.30 and this Book of the Bible ends with God doing His will, 00:22:47.33\00:22:52.10 in His way, at His time 00:22:52.13\00:22:54.37 and restoring us completely. 00:22:54.40\00:22:55.80 So there's no more pain, there's no more sorrow, 00:22:55.84\00:22:58.57 there's no more evil, all of it has passed away. 00:22:58.61\00:23:01.91 And now we can trust completely 00:23:01.94\00:23:03.88 and totally for all eternity in the goodness, the grace, 00:23:03.91\00:23:06.61 the love of a Heavenly Father who created us to enjoy nothing 00:23:06.65\00:23:10.39 but good and to have no experience with evil. 00:23:10.42\00:23:13.76 So I love it. I love this study. 00:23:13.79\00:23:15.42 I love the theme. 00:23:15.46\00:23:16.79 I love everything that God is telling us here, John, 00:23:16.83\00:23:19.03 because it's so powerful, it's so beautiful. 00:23:19.06\00:23:20.80 Because it points us to rely upon God 00:23:20.83\00:23:23.00 and trusting Him and to look for Him to do 00:23:23.03\00:23:24.80 what He's promised in His time and in His way. 00:23:24.83\00:23:27.14 Amen. 00:25:49.58\00:25:50.91 God is multiplying the people is that not so? 00:25:50.95\00:25:53.01 That is a blessing. 00:25:53.05\00:25:54.38 They are multiplying exponentially, 00:25:54.42\00:25:56.92 you could say. 00:25:56.95\00:25:58.29 And what's the problem? 00:25:58.32\00:25:59.65 Moses, God's servant, is overwhelmed. 00:25:59.69\00:26:03.06 The multiplication of the people 00:26:03.09\00:26:04.99 has overwhelmed God's leader. 00:26:05.03\00:26:08.56 Takeaway number one, you cannot do everything. 00:26:08.60\00:26:12.50 So seek help from other people. 00:26:12.53\00:26:15.20 Moses said, 00:26:15.24\00:26:16.57 "I alone am not able to bear it. 00:26:16.60\00:26:20.14 Genesis 218. 00:26:20.18\00:26:21.78 God knew that Adam could not bear it alone. 00:26:21.81\00:26:24.25 It is not good that man should be alone. 00:26:24.28\00:26:26.28 But I will make a helper for him. 00:26:26.31\00:26:28.98 Proverbs 18:1. 00:26:29.02\00:26:30.59 Now usually I quote, New King James Version, 00:26:30.62\00:26:32.85 but this is from the ESV. 00:26:32.89\00:26:34.76 It says, "Whoever isolates himself 00:26:34.79\00:26:37.73 seeks his own desire, 00:26:37.76\00:26:39.89 he breaks out against all sound judgment." 00:26:39.93\00:26:43.47 It is important that you 00:26:43.50\00:26:45.20 not try to do things by yourself. 00:26:45.23\00:26:47.54 You cannot bear everything alone. 00:26:47.57\00:26:49.84 Takeaway number two. 00:26:49.87\00:26:51.31 God alone brings blessings. 00:26:51.34\00:26:54.08 God alone brings the increase. 00:26:54.11\00:26:56.44 You notice Moses said, 00:26:56.48\00:26:57.81 "The, Lord, Your God has multiplied You." 00:26:57.85\00:27:01.12 Sometimes, we think we had something to do with a success. 00:27:01.15\00:27:05.55 We think in a prideful way, 00:27:05.59\00:27:07.69 we had something to do with the baptisms. 00:27:07.72\00:27:10.36 We had something to do 00:27:10.39\00:27:11.73 with the organizational structure of the church. 00:27:11.76\00:27:14.00 We had something to do 00:27:14.03\00:27:15.36 with the fact that souls are coming to know Jesus. 00:27:15.40\00:27:18.53 God's the one who did that. 00:27:18.57\00:27:20.64 God's the one who deserves the honor and glory, 00:27:20.67\00:27:22.80 I think about Nebuchadnezzar, 00:27:22.84\00:27:24.47 he kind of had a pride issue, did he not? 00:27:24.51\00:27:26.71 And then Daniel 4, remember Daniel 4:30. 00:27:26.74\00:27:31.31 Here's Nebuchadnezzar walking in the palace. 00:27:31.35\00:27:33.42 And what does he say? 00:27:33.45\00:27:34.78 The King said, this is Nebuchadnezzar, 00:27:34.82\00:27:36.58 "Is not this Great Babylon that I have built 00:27:36.62\00:27:41.09 for royal dwelling by my mighty power 00:27:41.12\00:27:44.36 and for the honor of my majesty." 00:27:44.39\00:27:46.63 The truth is we don't possess the power. 00:27:46.66\00:27:49.06 We don't possess the might. We don't accomplish anything. 00:27:49.10\00:27:53.17 God alone, He gets the glory. Takeaway number three. 00:27:53.20\00:27:57.61 When you're overwhelmed, 00:27:57.64\00:27:59.07 it's easy to think it's all on you. 00:27:59.11\00:28:03.61 Moses, what did he say in verse 12? 00:28:03.65\00:28:05.45 "How can I alone bear your problems?" 00:28:05.48\00:28:08.12 Was it on Moses? No. 00:28:08.15\00:28:09.75 But for whatever reason, 00:28:09.78\00:28:11.39 he thought it was resting on him, 00:28:11.42\00:28:13.92 "How can I bear your problems 00:28:13.96\00:28:15.46 and your burdens and your complaints?" 00:28:15.49\00:28:17.89 Sometimes, we criticize people who feel overwhelmed and think, 00:28:17.93\00:28:21.46 "Well, they're dealing with pride, 00:28:21.50\00:28:22.83 they need to whatever," 00:28:22.86\00:28:24.20 Sometimes, it's simply that they are overwhelmed. 00:28:24.23\00:28:26.80 And that's why they feel that way. 00:28:26.84\00:28:28.54 So that is the blessing was that the people were numerous. 00:28:28.57\00:28:31.71 And the problem was that Moses was overwhelmed. 00:28:31.74\00:28:34.18 Let's look at the solution. 00:28:34.21\00:28:36.14 In verses 13 and 14, we're in Deuteronomy 1:13-14. 00:28:36.18\00:28:41.78 "Choose wise, understanding, and knowledgeable men 00:28:41.82\00:28:46.62 from among your tribes, 00:28:46.65\00:28:48.22 and I will make them heads over you." 00:28:48.26\00:28:50.89 This is an organizational structure been 00:28:50.93\00:28:53.36 put in place for the children of Israel. 00:28:53.40\00:28:56.13 "And you answered me," 00:28:56.16\00:28:57.50 this is the people, "and said, 00:28:57.53\00:28:58.87 'The thing which you have told us 00:28:58.90\00:29:00.24 to do is good.'" 00:29:00.27\00:29:01.80 Takeaway number four, 00:29:01.84\00:29:03.27 listen to Godly counsel and people 00:29:03.30\00:29:06.04 who care about you. 00:29:06.07\00:29:07.41 If you read the context of this, 00:29:07.44\00:29:08.94 you go back to Exodus 18, 00:29:08.98\00:29:10.85 is where the story is actually told and expressed. 00:29:10.88\00:29:13.58 And remember, Jethro, 00:29:13.62\00:29:14.95 Moses' father-in-law came to visit, 00:29:14.98\00:29:16.89 and he says, "Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. 00:29:16.92\00:29:19.22 You've been judging the people all day. 00:29:19.25\00:29:21.92 I've been sitting over in the corner 00:29:21.96\00:29:23.43 and I'm watching you and from dawn to late at night, 00:29:23.46\00:29:26.80 the people come before you 00:29:26.83\00:29:28.16 and you're getting weary with this." 00:29:28.20\00:29:31.23 So Moses' father-in-law Jethro 00:29:31.27\00:29:33.74 gave him sound counsel, gave him good advice. 00:29:33.77\00:29:38.07 So listen to godly counsel, and people who care about you. 00:29:38.11\00:29:41.24 Takeaway number five. 00:29:41.28\00:29:42.68 When selecting leaders for God's work, 00:29:42.71\00:29:45.41 don't just pick anybody. 00:29:45.45\00:29:48.68 You noticed there were three adjectives 00:29:48.72\00:29:50.59 that were used, were they're not? 00:29:50.62\00:29:52.22 Wise, understanding, and knowledgeable. 00:29:52.25\00:29:57.69 Don't just pick anybody. 00:29:57.73\00:30:00.10 Wise. 00:30:00.13\00:30:01.46 In Hebrew, it literally means 00:30:01.50\00:30:03.20 wise capable of making thoughtful 00:30:03.23\00:30:04.87 and godly choices. 00:30:04.90\00:30:06.23 But the same Hebrew word is used to describe Joseph. 00:30:06.27\00:30:09.60 The same Hebrew word is used to describe David. 00:30:09.64\00:30:13.54 The same Hebrew word 00:30:13.58\00:30:15.31 is used to describe Solomon 00:30:15.34\00:30:17.45 and actually several woman in the Old Testament as well. 00:30:17.48\00:30:20.75 So choose wise people. 00:30:20.78\00:30:23.69 Number two, choose understanding people. 00:30:23.72\00:30:26.92 Now the word understanding in Hebrew means to discern. 00:30:26.96\00:30:30.49 So choose people with great discernment. 00:30:30.53\00:30:33.16 If you're forming a church or a company or an organization 00:30:33.19\00:30:37.63 or any type of structure, 00:30:37.67\00:30:39.70 choose people with great discernment. 00:30:39.73\00:30:42.14 The same Hebrew word is used to describe Joseph as well, 00:30:42.17\00:30:45.14 this word discernment, the word wise and discerning 00:30:45.17\00:30:48.24 both use to describe Joseph. 00:30:48.28\00:30:50.31 And finally, the word knowledgeable 00:30:50.35\00:30:53.28 comes from the Hebrew word yada, 00:30:53.31\00:30:54.92 which means to know. 00:30:54.95\00:30:57.15 Choose people who have respect, people who are experienced, 00:30:57.19\00:31:02.82 people who know something. 00:31:02.86\00:31:06.16 Look at someone's qualifications 00:31:06.19\00:31:08.03 and their character 00:31:08.06\00:31:09.40 before selecting them for a task in God's work. 00:31:09.43\00:31:12.33 Sometimes, we just want to fill a task. 00:31:12.37\00:31:15.64 We say, "Okay, this person is living and breathing. 00:31:15.67\00:31:17.97 Sure, they can be the deaconess in church. 00:31:18.01\00:31:20.28 Sure, they can be an elder in church. 00:31:20.31\00:31:22.11 Sure, they can do whatever." 00:31:22.14\00:31:23.48 I love what pastor John says. 00:31:23.51\00:31:24.85 He said this for many years here at the church. 00:31:24.88\00:31:28.15 And hopefully, I remember this correctly. 00:31:28.18\00:31:29.68 If I don't, you can correct me. 00:31:29.72\00:31:31.12 There's no standards for fellowship, 00:31:31.15\00:31:34.16 there are standards for membership, 00:31:34.19\00:31:36.56 and high standards for leadership. 00:31:36.59\00:31:39.69 That is what Moses was doing with the people, 00:31:39.73\00:31:44.20 high standards for the leadership team 00:31:44.23\00:31:46.97 that he was selecting there. 00:31:47.00\00:31:49.00 Takeaway number six. Listen to leadership. 00:31:49.04\00:31:52.47 You know, the children of Israel, 00:31:52.51\00:31:53.84 how did they answer Moses. 00:31:53.88\00:31:55.48 "The thing you said to do, it's very good, we will do it." 00:31:55.51\00:31:59.91 They could have balked, 00:31:59.95\00:32:01.28 and clearly, they balked other times, 00:32:01.32\00:32:02.65 but in this time they did not. 00:32:02.68\00:32:04.45 They could have questioned, 00:32:04.49\00:32:06.65 they could have come up with their own solutions. 00:32:06.69\00:32:08.62 But instead, they sat back 00:32:08.66\00:32:10.56 and they listened to leadership's counsel. 00:32:10.59\00:32:13.19 And they chose to honor it. 00:32:13.23\00:32:14.56 They chose to obey. 00:32:14.60\00:32:16.30 And that's something for us today 00:32:16.33\00:32:17.87 to honor and respect 00:32:17.90\00:32:20.87 those in authority over us. 00:32:20.90\00:32:24.21 Finally, we get to the practical application. 00:32:24.24\00:32:26.51 Let's read verses 15-18. 00:32:26.54\00:32:29.04 "So I took the heads of your tribes, 00:32:29.08\00:32:30.71 wise, and knowledgeable men, and made them heads over you, 00:32:30.75\00:32:33.88 leaders of thousands, leaders of hundreds, 00:32:33.92\00:32:36.35 leaders of fifties, leaders of tens, 00:32:36.38\00:32:38.25 and officers for your tribes. 00:32:38.29\00:32:40.22 Then I commanded your judges at that time, saying, 00:32:40.26\00:32:42.92 'Hear the cases between your brethren, 00:32:42.96\00:32:45.19 and judge righteously between a man 00:32:45.23\00:32:47.33 and his brother or the stranger who is with him. 00:32:47.36\00:32:49.90 You shall not show partiality in judgment, 00:32:49.93\00:32:52.97 you shall hear the small as well as the great, 00:32:53.00\00:32:55.37 you shall not be afraid in any man's presence, 00:32:55.40\00:32:58.17 for the judgment is God's. 00:32:58.21\00:33:00.58 The case that is too hard for you, 00:33:00.61\00:33:02.31 bring to me, and I will hear it.' 00:33:02.34\00:33:04.48 And I commanded you at that time 00:33:04.51\00:33:06.01 all the things which you should do." 00:33:06.05\00:33:07.82 Takeaway number seven. 00:33:07.85\00:33:09.18 Organization is divine. 00:33:09.22\00:33:11.65 God ordained it with the children of Israel 00:33:11.69\00:33:13.42 making leaders over the thousand 00:33:13.46\00:33:15.49 and the hundreds and the fifties. 00:33:15.52\00:33:17.46 God ordained it in the New Testament Church, 00:33:17.49\00:33:19.89 we saw this with the disagreement 00:33:19.93\00:33:21.96 between the Hellenists and the Hebrews 00:33:22.00\00:33:23.73 if you read in the Book of Acts, 00:33:23.77\00:33:25.10 and the widows felt like they were being overlooked. 00:33:25.13\00:33:28.30 And God ordained deacons 00:33:28.34\00:33:30.04 to step in and to fill that gap, 00:33:30.07\00:33:32.21 and help fill that 00:33:32.24\00:33:33.58 organizational need that they had. 00:33:33.61\00:33:35.88 Some people say it quenches the spirit to be organized. 00:33:35.91\00:33:38.61 But really, it's divine. 00:33:38.65\00:33:40.75 Takeaway number eight. 00:33:40.78\00:33:42.28 Know when to pass the buck. 00:33:42.32\00:33:44.92 Do you notice Moses said, 00:33:44.95\00:33:46.29 "The case that is too hard for you, 00:33:46.32\00:33:48.02 bring it to me, and I will judge it." 00:33:48.06\00:33:50.69 You don't have to know everything. 00:33:50.73\00:33:52.19 You don't have to do everything. 00:33:52.23\00:33:54.46 Know when it's too hard. 00:33:54.50\00:33:56.06 And you need to pass something on. 00:33:56.10\00:33:58.10 And finally, takeaway number nine. 00:33:58.13\00:34:00.50 Listen to instruction. 00:34:00.54\00:34:03.41 Moses said I commanded you with that time, 00:34:03.44\00:34:05.47 all of the things which you should do. 00:34:05.51\00:34:08.44 Listen to what your job entails, 00:34:08.48\00:34:09.94 and do it to the best of your ability. 00:34:09.98\00:34:11.75 Proverbs 1:8, "My son, 00:34:11.78\00:34:13.85 hear the instruction of your father, 00:34:13.88\00:34:17.25 and do not forsake the law of your mother." 00:34:17.29\00:34:19.95 So what we see here at 00:34:19.99\00:34:21.32 the very beginning of Deuteronomy, 00:34:21.36\00:34:22.69 Moses reminding of the people 00:34:22.72\00:34:24.73 of the organization of structure 00:34:24.76\00:34:26.59 that took place years 00:34:26.63\00:34:27.96 before there for the children of Israel, 00:34:28.00\00:34:29.70 and there's so many lessons that we can learn for us today. 00:34:29.73\00:34:33.20 Amen and amen. That's wonderful. 00:34:33.23\00:34:34.77 I always love your lessons, Jilly. 00:34:34.80\00:34:37.21 I have Wednesday's lesson, which is Kadesh Barnea. 00:34:37.24\00:34:42.51 And this was an encampment site for Israel in the wilderness. 00:34:42.54\00:34:47.65 And what happened at Kadesh Barnea 00:34:47.68\00:34:51.45 was the immediate setting or background 00:34:51.49\00:34:54.79 for the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:34:54.82\00:34:56.62 We're supposed to go through Deuteronomy 1:20-46. 00:34:56.66\00:35:01.70 I'm not going to read it, we won't get through it. 00:35:01.73\00:35:04.30 But this is recounting 00:35:04.33\00:35:06.63 the story of numbers 14. 00:35:06.67\00:35:10.71 Let me just say this. 00:35:10.74\00:35:12.34 Israel had a special relationship with the Lord 00:35:12.37\00:35:15.81 because they were children of Abraham. 00:35:15.84\00:35:19.58 And God chose Israel. 00:35:19.61\00:35:23.02 And He made them a covenant nation. 00:35:23.05\00:35:28.72 He declared them to be 00:35:28.76\00:35:32.89 His first covenant son. 00:35:32.93\00:35:36.67 They were the firstborn son of God 00:35:36.70\00:35:38.90 is what Exodus 4:22-23 says. 00:35:38.93\00:35:43.30 So what does he do? 00:35:43.34\00:35:45.24 He accompanies them through the wilderness, 00:35:45.27\00:35:48.71 by fire at night, 00:35:48.74\00:35:50.35 by that camp pillar of cloud during the day. 00:35:50.38\00:35:53.58 And now they get to the edge of the Promised Land. 00:35:53.62\00:35:57.85 And Moses tells them, "Go up, go into the Promised Land, 00:35:57.89\00:36:02.19 God has promised it to you." 00:36:02.22\00:36:03.63 But what are the people do? 00:36:03.66\00:36:05.69 "Just a second. 00:36:05.73\00:36:07.06 Well, we'd like to test this ourselves." 00:36:07.10\00:36:10.03 And so they want to send in some spies. 00:36:10.07\00:36:13.50 Well, obviously Moses had have taken this 00:36:13.54\00:36:16.40 to the Lord and he approved. 00:36:16.44\00:36:18.57 And what they do. 00:36:18.61\00:36:21.41 Numbers 13 shows that God says, "Okay, send up the spies." 00:36:21.44\00:36:25.65 So he chooses one spy from every tribe. 00:36:25.68\00:36:28.38 The 12 spies go into the Promised Land, 00:36:28.42\00:36:33.56 and then they come out. 00:36:33.59\00:36:35.29 Guess what they say, 10 of them. 00:36:35.32\00:36:37.96 They're faithless. 00:36:37.99\00:36:39.69 And boy, I'll tell you what. 00:36:39.73\00:36:41.70 They're saying, 00:36:41.73\00:36:43.06 "Oh, the walls are like up to the heavens, 00:36:43.10\00:36:46.94 the man are like giants, 00:36:46.97\00:36:49.67 we were about grasshoppers in our own eyes." 00:36:49.70\00:36:53.61 They had the grasshopper identity syndrome. 00:36:53.64\00:36:56.34 And that's my first takeaway. 00:36:56.38\00:36:58.95 If we don't know who we are in Christ, 00:36:58.98\00:37:01.78 we too will have 00:37:01.82\00:37:03.15 the grasshopper identity syndrome. 00:37:03.18\00:37:05.49 So Caleb and Joshua, 00:37:05.52\00:37:07.39 I'm going to read from Numbers 13. 00:37:07.42\00:37:11.56 Caleb and Joshua trying to quite the people 00:37:11.59\00:37:15.83 because they are the two faithful spies. 00:37:15.86\00:37:19.10 And they said, 00:37:19.13\00:37:20.47 "Let us go up at once and take possession, 00:37:20.50\00:37:23.24 for we are well able to overcome it." 00:37:23.27\00:37:26.74 See, God had redeemed them, 00:37:26.78\00:37:28.94 he performed miracles among them, 00:37:28.98\00:37:31.31 he guided them by fire and by cloud. 00:37:31.35\00:37:34.88 And as he directed them in the past, 00:37:34.92\00:37:37.75 Caleb and Joshua knew 00:37:37.79\00:37:39.75 he would direct them in the future. 00:37:39.79\00:37:42.42 But the people again sprang the Lord. 00:37:42.46\00:37:45.93 Actually, this is the tenth time 00:37:45.96\00:37:49.86 that they wouldn't trust His promises. 00:37:49.90\00:37:53.87 They wouldn't trust His power. 00:37:53.90\00:37:56.20 They had a complete lack of faith in God. 00:37:56.24\00:37:59.24 They assume the worst about God, 00:37:59.27\00:38:02.11 "Oh, you brought us out here in the desert to die 00:38:02.14\00:38:05.01 by the sword in our children, 00:38:05.05\00:38:07.35 you're going to kill our children." 00:38:07.38\00:38:09.95 They were so agitated, 00:38:09.98\00:38:12.65 that they were ready to replace Moses. 00:38:12.69\00:38:15.82 They wanted a new leader. 00:38:15.86\00:38:17.69 And that's going to be my second takeaway 00:38:17.73\00:38:23.53 is that their fear and depression 00:38:23.57\00:38:27.10 can cause us to focus on negative circumstances 00:38:27.14\00:38:31.37 rather than looking for God in it to deliver us. 00:38:31.41\00:38:36.24 But also, rebellion can cause us to reject 00:38:36.28\00:38:41.12 and humiliate God's chosen leader. 00:38:41.15\00:38:44.72 Now so what happens? 00:38:44.75\00:38:48.42 Moses and Aaron, they fall down on their face, 00:38:48.46\00:38:51.23 humbling themselves before the Lord 00:38:51.26\00:38:53.40 at the entrance to the temple. 00:38:53.43\00:38:55.36 Joshua and Caleb teared their clothes. 00:38:55.40\00:38:58.50 Numbers 14:7-10. 00:38:58.53\00:39:00.70 They say, "The land we passed through to spy out 00:39:00.74\00:39:03.17 is an exceedingly good, exceedingly good land. 00:39:03.20\00:39:06.91 If the Lord delights in us, He will bring us into the land, 00:39:06.94\00:39:10.05 he'll give it to us, 00:39:10.08\00:39:11.71 'a land which flows with milk and honey.' 00:39:11.75\00:39:16.28 Only do not rebel against the Lord, 00:39:16.32\00:39:19.45 nor fear the people of the land, 00:39:19.49\00:39:21.96 for they are our bread, 00:39:21.99\00:39:24.16 their protection has departed from them, 00:39:24.19\00:39:26.90 and the Lord is with us. 00:39:26.93\00:39:28.96 Do not fear them.'" 00:39:29.00\00:39:31.37 The congregation wanted to stone Joshua and Caleb 00:39:31.40\00:39:35.34 and God intervenes, boy, 00:39:35.37\00:39:36.94 there's kind of glory of God, appears at the tabernacle. 00:39:36.97\00:39:41.24 And all of them saw it. 00:39:41.28\00:39:43.45 So he kept him from stoning them. 00:39:43.48\00:39:45.98 But God took very seriously there rebellion 00:39:46.01\00:39:50.92 and He justifiably threatened 00:39:50.95\00:39:54.22 to destroy the faithless and start over again. 00:39:54.26\00:39:57.93 In numbers 14:11-12. 00:39:57.96\00:40:00.93 He says, "How long will these people reject me? 00:40:00.96\00:40:04.63 And how long will they not believe me, 00:40:04.67\00:40:08.67 with all the signs 00:40:08.70\00:40:10.04 which I have performed among them? 00:40:10.07\00:40:12.24 I will strike them 00:40:12.27\00:40:13.61 with the pestilence and disinherit them, 00:40:13.64\00:40:16.58 and I will make of you," 00:40:16.61\00:40:18.85 he's speaking to Moses, 00:40:18.88\00:40:20.62 "a nation greater and mightier than they." 00:40:20.65\00:40:23.89 Boy, this is the same situation 00:40:23.92\00:40:25.75 you were talking about earlier in Exodus 32, 00:40:25.79\00:40:28.96 where Moses now has to intervene. 00:40:28.99\00:40:31.76 I mean, God is saying, "Hey, we'll start over. 00:40:31.79\00:40:34.33 Let me get rid of these." 00:40:34.36\00:40:35.70 I think he was testing Moses. 00:40:35.73\00:40:37.70 But He basically told Moses, 00:40:37.73\00:40:41.40 "I'll start over with you and make a people out of you," 00:40:41.44\00:40:44.34 just like he'd started with Abraham. 00:40:44.37\00:40:46.84 But Moses intervenes, 00:40:46.88\00:40:49.64 not only on behalf of the rebellious nature 00:40:49.68\00:40:52.25 but on behalf of God's reputation. 00:40:52.28\00:40:56.05 Listen to what he says, "If you do this, 00:40:56.08\00:40:59.15 look at how you appear in the eyes of the Egyptians 00:40:59.19\00:41:02.42 and the other nations, 00:41:02.46\00:41:03.79 these nations are going to think 00:41:03.83\00:41:05.16 you don't have the power 00:41:05.19\00:41:06.53 to fulfill your promises to your people. 00:41:06.56\00:41:09.36 Moses knew that God's glory 00:41:09.40\00:41:12.50 was at stake in this crisis. 00:41:12.53\00:41:15.97 See, everything God did for Israel 00:41:16.00\00:41:20.71 was to be a blessing to humanity as a whole. 00:41:20.74\00:41:25.35 The love and power and salvation 00:41:25.38\00:41:27.72 that God had demonstrated to Israel 00:41:27.75\00:41:32.99 was supposed to be a witness 00:41:33.02\00:41:36.59 to the other people at the time. 00:41:36.62\00:41:38.83 So Moses intercedes, and I love this. 00:41:38.86\00:41:41.86 I just love this. 00:41:41.90\00:41:43.63 In Numbers 14:17-19, you know how he begins his prayer. 00:41:43.67\00:41:48.50 He's reminding the lord of his own words, 00:41:48.54\00:41:51.94 the God's Word does not return, boys. 00:41:51.97\00:41:54.81 He says to the Lord, in verse 17, Numbers 14:17. 00:41:54.84\00:41:59.75 "Now, I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, 00:41:59.78\00:42:02.25 just as You have spoken." 00:42:02.28\00:42:04.55 "Lord, now he's going to remind you, he's quoting. 00:42:04.59\00:42:07.69 "The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, 00:42:07.72\00:42:10.29 forgiving iniquity and transgression, 00:42:10.33\00:42:13.93 but He by no means clears the guilty," 00:42:13.96\00:42:19.03 and then he goes on in verse 19. 00:42:19.07\00:42:20.77 He says, "Pardon the iniquity of this people, 00:42:20.80\00:42:24.07 I pray, according to the greatness of your mercy, 00:42:24.11\00:42:27.18 just as you have forgiven 00:42:27.21\00:42:28.68 this people from Egypt until now." 00:42:28.71\00:42:33.11 Now this is the tenth time 00:42:33.15\00:42:36.15 they've murmured against the Lord. 00:42:36.18\00:42:38.65 He repeatedly responded with patience and grace. 00:42:38.69\00:42:43.22 But guess what his longsuffering patients 00:42:43.26\00:42:45.76 had come to an end. 00:42:45.79\00:42:47.50 In spite of His love, His justice, His righteousness, 00:42:47.53\00:42:52.30 would not allow Him 00:42:52.33\00:42:53.67 to let the guilty go unpunished. 00:42:53.70\00:42:55.64 So He passes down the judgment on this first generation, 00:42:55.67\00:43:01.54 everybody that was 20 and older. 00:43:01.58\00:43:05.81 It's interesting, 00:43:05.85\00:43:07.22 if they were 19 or under, he didn't. 00:43:07.25\00:43:10.29 But here's what he says to them. 00:43:10.32\00:43:12.75 He judged the rebellious people 00:43:12.79\00:43:14.99 according to their own words. 00:43:15.02\00:43:16.99 Ooh, listen to this. 00:43:17.03\00:43:19.23 Numbers 14-28. 00:43:19.26\00:43:21.80 He says, say to them, 00:43:21.83\00:43:24.33 as I live, says the Lord, 00:43:24.37\00:43:27.30 just as you've spoken in my hearing, 00:43:27.34\00:43:30.21 so I will do to you. 00:43:30.24\00:43:32.34 Boy, is their take away there? 00:43:32.37\00:43:34.51 Their concept place of stiff-necked rebellion, 00:43:34.54\00:43:38.95 where there's a point of no return, 00:43:38.98\00:43:41.72 they'd reached that. 00:43:41.75\00:43:43.18 And God, they had murmured against Him, 00:43:43.22\00:43:47.09 they'd accused Him of the worst. 00:43:47.12\00:43:49.32 And His verdict was, 00:43:49.36\00:43:51.29 "All right, you're going to get one year for each day 00:43:51.33\00:43:54.70 that you spied out 40 days 00:43:54.73\00:43:57.00 that you spied out the wilderness. 00:43:57.03\00:43:59.93 Now there's going to be 40 years of wandering. 00:43:59.97\00:44:03.27 And he says, "And nobody 20 00:44:03.30\00:44:07.74 and over, is going to go..." 00:44:07.78\00:44:09.78 "Anybody that was old enough to understand, 00:44:09.81\00:44:11.98 anybody that was murmuring against God, 00:44:12.01\00:44:14.52 and saying the worst of Him, 00:44:14.55\00:44:16.28 they would not enter into the Promised Land." 00:44:16.32\00:44:21.69 And like you mentioned James. 00:44:21.72\00:44:24.03 The funny thing is, now Moses tells them, 00:44:24.06\00:44:28.00 "Nope, don't go up to the Promised Land." 00:44:28.03\00:44:29.96 The people are going, "Oh, wait, we'll go, we'll go." 00:44:30.00\00:44:33.13 You know? 00:44:33.17\00:44:34.50 Now they go against God's Word again, 00:44:34.54\00:44:36.34 go up to the Promised Land, 00:44:36.37\00:44:38.14 and they're routed just like God had told them 00:44:38.17\00:44:40.18 because it wasn't... 00:44:40.21\00:44:42.64 They still weren't going to obey what they wanted to do. 00:44:42.68\00:44:46.08 They're just arrogantly defying the Lord 00:44:46.11\00:44:49.72 and they just didn't want that judgment on them. 00:44:49.75\00:44:54.19 All right, thank you so much. 00:44:54.22\00:44:56.83 Thursday's lesson is entitled The Iniquity of the Amorite. 00:44:56.86\00:45:00.33 And of course, this is a building 00:45:00.36\00:45:02.16 from what we've discussed so far through 00:45:02.20\00:45:03.67 this historical lesson of Moses. 00:45:03.70\00:45:07.24 But it's quite interesting because Thursday's lesson, 00:45:07.27\00:45:09.37 the major point of it is 00:45:09.40\00:45:10.74 dealing with a very touchy subject, 00:45:10.77\00:45:12.47 one that many people have questions about, 00:45:12.51\00:45:14.31 in fact, many people choose 00:45:14.34\00:45:15.74 not to believe in the validity of Scripture 00:45:15.78\00:45:17.71 and choose not to serve God 00:45:17.75\00:45:19.21 because of some of the things 00:45:19.25\00:45:20.58 we're going to discuss in Thursday's lesson. 00:45:20.62\00:45:22.48 So let's kind of set this up. 00:45:22.52\00:45:23.85 So basically, what we're seeing through Deuteronomy 2 and 3. 00:45:23.89\00:45:27.36 We just came out of Deuteronomy 1. 00:45:27.39\00:45:29.56 Now we're in Deuteronomy 2 and 3, 00:45:29.59\00:45:31.59 and Moses continues to recount 00:45:31.63\00:45:33.66 the Israelite history of how with, 00:45:33.70\00:45:35.86 of course, of God's blessing, 00:45:35.90\00:45:37.23 they're going through this area, 00:45:37.27\00:45:38.97 from nation to nation. 00:45:39.00\00:45:40.34 And as, you know, 00:45:40.37\00:45:41.70 because they were faithful to God, 00:45:41.74\00:45:43.07 God's delivering these people into their hands. 00:45:43.10\00:45:45.04 And so even over giants, 00:45:45.07\00:45:46.78 and we see record of this in Deuteronomy 3:13. 00:45:46.81\00:45:50.05 So notice what Deuteronomy 3:13 says, 00:45:50.08\00:45:52.68 it says, "The rest of Gilead, 00:45:52.71\00:45:54.05 and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, 00:45:54.08\00:45:56.28 I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh. 00:45:56.32\00:45:58.79 All the region of Argob, 00:45:58.82\00:46:00.62 with all Bashan, was called the land of the giants." 00:46:00.66\00:46:04.46 So we see that God is so faithful, 00:46:04.49\00:46:06.39 He's got His people. 00:46:06.43\00:46:07.93 And you would think by now that 00:46:07.96\00:46:09.30 they would trust in the Lord right there, 00:46:09.33\00:46:10.67 they should trust in God 00:46:10.70\00:46:12.03 because God has even delivered them 00:46:12.07\00:46:13.40 through the land of the giants, right? 00:46:13.44\00:46:16.57 But this leads us to an even more interesting question 00:46:16.60\00:46:20.81 and something we at least need to touch on. 00:46:20.84\00:46:22.81 And that's the fact that in the process of going through 00:46:22.84\00:46:26.08 these lands and encountering all these people... 00:46:26.11\00:46:28.35 Of course, God would always instruct them first 00:46:28.38\00:46:30.79 to bring a message of peace. 00:46:30.82\00:46:32.25 And so they would address, 00:46:32.29\00:46:34.26 you know, these nations through, 00:46:34.29\00:46:37.59 you know, peace offering of some kind 00:46:37.63\00:46:39.09 or try to establish peace 00:46:39.13\00:46:40.73 but many of these paganistic nations 00:46:40.76\00:46:44.37 simply would not receive that offer. 00:46:44.40\00:46:46.57 And of course, when they would not, 00:46:46.60\00:46:48.54 you know, come within, you know, 00:46:48.57\00:46:50.61 respond positively to that offer, 00:46:50.64\00:46:53.21 we have to deal with that history, 00:46:53.24\00:46:54.58 which is the fact that they would go in, 00:46:54.61\00:46:56.38 and they would destroy everyone, 00:46:56.41\00:46:58.68 man, woman, and child. 00:46:58.71\00:47:01.15 We see record of this in Deuteronomy 2:33 and 34. 00:47:01.18\00:47:05.55 Notice what it says here. 00:47:05.59\00:47:06.92 Deuteronomy 2:33 and 34. 00:47:06.96\00:47:09.52 It says, "And the Lord our God delivered him over to us, 00:47:09.56\00:47:13.73 so we defeated him, his sons, and all his people. 00:47:13.76\00:47:16.93 We took all his cities at that time, 00:47:16.97\00:47:19.77 and we utterly destroyed the men, women, 00:47:19.80\00:47:22.14 and little ones of every city, 00:47:22.17\00:47:25.27 we left none remaining." 00:47:25.31\00:47:28.44 And these are texts, 00:47:28.48\00:47:31.55 we see records of these things throughout 00:47:31.58\00:47:33.62 some of the Old Testament Scriptures, 00:47:33.65\00:47:35.35 and especially in dealing with this historical record 00:47:35.38\00:47:37.99 of how God is bringing the people 00:47:38.02\00:47:40.29 into this Promised Land, 00:47:40.32\00:47:41.66 and they're having to face these challenges. 00:47:41.69\00:47:43.19 You know, I know people who just discount this, 00:47:43.22\00:47:46.09 some people just look at and say, 00:47:46.13\00:47:47.46 "Oh, you know what, we can't even trust 00:47:47.50\00:47:49.33 the validity of these texts." 00:47:49.36\00:47:50.70 Some people deny that this record even exists like 00:47:50.73\00:47:52.70 this is all made up, that this really didn't happen. 00:47:52.73\00:47:54.44 And these are questions 00:47:54.47\00:47:55.80 because they don't have answers to this. 00:47:55.84\00:47:57.17 So they just downright reject the record of this. 00:47:57.21\00:47:59.51 But nonetheless, 00:47:59.54\00:48:00.88 I don't think that that's a sufficient answer. 00:48:00.91\00:48:02.24 If we are true Bible Christians, 00:48:02.28\00:48:03.85 we have to face reality that these things did happen. 00:48:03.88\00:48:06.72 It's just simply not an acceptable answer. 00:48:06.75\00:48:08.92 Because if we believe in the promises of God's Word, 00:48:08.95\00:48:12.02 and we believe in the council's 00:48:12.05\00:48:13.39 I think of 2 Timothy 3:16, 00:48:13.42\00:48:16.36 which tells us that all scripture is given 00:48:16.39\00:48:18.79 by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, 00:48:18.83\00:48:21.63 for reproof, for correction, 00:48:21.66\00:48:23.57 for instruction in righteousness. 00:48:23.60\00:48:26.40 So all scripture that means even the tough text, 00:48:26.43\00:48:29.07 even the tough passages that 00:48:29.10\00:48:30.57 we read about that is inspired by God, 00:48:30.61\00:48:33.64 that record was given by God. 00:48:33.68\00:48:35.01 And, yes, these events really did happen. 00:48:35.04\00:48:36.85 So how do we reconcile this in our mind? 00:48:36.88\00:48:39.41 You know, oftentimes, 00:48:39.45\00:48:40.78 there's not an explicit clear-cut answer. 00:48:40.82\00:48:42.82 That is sufficient for everyone. 00:48:42.85\00:48:44.35 But I believe we can find some understanding, 00:48:44.39\00:48:47.46 even in other texts found in the scripture. 00:48:47.49\00:48:49.32 If we go back to the Abrahamic Covenant. 00:48:49.36\00:48:50.79 Let's go to Genesis 12, excuse me, Genesis 15. 00:48:50.83\00:48:55.16 Let's go to Genesis 15. 00:48:55.20\00:48:57.17 The study wants us to read verses 1-16. 00:48:57.20\00:48:59.73 For lack of time, we're not going to read 00:48:59.77\00:49:01.10 all of these verses, 00:49:01.14\00:49:02.47 but I do want us to pick up in verse 12. 00:49:02.50\00:49:04.11 So we're again in Genesis 15. 00:49:04.14\00:49:06.17 I'm going to start reading in verse 12. 00:49:06.21\00:49:07.74 And then we're going to work our way to verse 16. 00:49:07.78\00:49:09.51 Verse 16 holds an interesting truth 00:49:09.54\00:49:11.98 there that kind of sheds some light 00:49:12.01\00:49:13.75 on this issue of going in and having to deal 00:49:13.78\00:49:16.92 with these pagan hedonistic nations 00:49:16.95\00:49:21.72 that simply were just flooded in iniquity. 00:49:21.76\00:49:24.83 And so what we find there, 00:49:24.86\00:49:26.19 Genesis 15, beginning with verse 12. 00:49:26.23\00:49:28.30 It says, "Now when the sun was going down, 00:49:28.33\00:49:30.03 a deep sleep fell upon Abram, 00:49:30.07\00:49:32.03 and behold, horror 00:49:32.07\00:49:33.40 and great darkness fell upon him. 00:49:33.44\00:49:35.20 Then He said to Abram, 00:49:35.24\00:49:36.60 'Know certainly that your descendants 00:49:36.64\00:49:39.14 will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, 00:49:39.17\00:49:42.94 and will serve them, 00:49:42.98\00:49:44.41 and they will afflict them 400 years.'" 00:49:44.45\00:49:46.01 As the speaking of the Egyptian bondage. 00:49:46.05\00:49:47.98 But then notice verse 14 onward. 00:49:48.02\00:49:49.68 It says, "And also the nation whom they serve I will judge, 00:49:49.72\00:49:52.89 afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 00:49:52.92\00:49:56.59 Now as for you, 00:49:56.62\00:49:58.29 you shall go to your fathers in peace, 00:49:58.33\00:50:01.16 you shall be buried at a good old age." 00:50:01.20\00:50:03.57 This is verse 16. 00:50:03.60\00:50:05.33 "But in the fourth generation they shall return here," 00:50:05.37\00:50:09.44 and then notice this interesting detail, 00:50:09.47\00:50:10.97 "for the iniquity of the Amorites 00:50:11.01\00:50:13.91 is not yet complete." 00:50:13.94\00:50:16.85 Rather interesting, this kind of brings me back 00:50:16.88\00:50:19.15 also to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:50:19.18\00:50:21.78 They had reached the point of no return, right? 00:50:21.82\00:50:25.45 And this is what reminds me of this, 00:50:25.49\00:50:27.12 you know, why did God 00:50:27.16\00:50:28.49 allow some of these horrible things to happen. 00:50:28.52\00:50:30.53 And again, many people shake the fist at God. 00:50:30.56\00:50:32.36 "Oh, you're not a God that I want to serve 00:50:32.39\00:50:34.03 because you allow, you know, the lives of innocent children 00:50:34.06\00:50:37.13 and women and families to be taken." 00:50:37.17\00:50:38.83 But yet at the same time, 00:50:38.87\00:50:40.24 while there may not be an explicit answer, 00:50:40.27\00:50:42.70 we have record here that tells us that 00:50:42.74\00:50:44.47 the iniquity of these heathen nations, 00:50:44.51\00:50:46.37 they were so abundant, so overwhelming. 00:50:46.41\00:50:48.74 In fact, if you look at the history of this, 00:50:48.78\00:50:50.88 this goes all the way back 00:50:50.91\00:50:52.31 to from the descendants of Noah, obviously. 00:50:52.35\00:50:54.85 But it's interesting to go back 00:50:54.88\00:50:56.22 and read the descendants of Noah from Genesis 10, 00:50:56.25\00:50:59.85 Noah had three sons, it was Shem, Ham, 00:50:59.89\00:51:02.06 and Japheth. 00:51:02.09\00:51:03.43 Now if you read the records of those descendants 00:51:03.46\00:51:04.86 coming from those three sons, 00:51:04.89\00:51:06.23 the record of the descendants coming from Ham and Japheth, 00:51:06.26\00:51:09.33 many of those descendants 00:51:09.36\00:51:10.70 and those different tribes of people 00:51:10.73\00:51:12.87 that sprung out from Ham and Japheth ended up 00:51:12.90\00:51:15.14 becoming enemies of God's people. 00:51:15.17\00:51:17.57 And many of these nations that 00:51:17.61\00:51:19.24 they're having to fight, and they're having to destroy, 00:51:19.27\00:51:21.34 they're having to go through to get to this Promised Land 00:51:21.38\00:51:23.38 came from Ham, and Japheth. 00:51:23.41\00:51:25.21 And it's interesting when you read the record in Genesis 10, 00:51:25.25\00:51:27.32 you see Ham, of course, 00:51:27.35\00:51:28.95 begot got Cush, Cush begot Nimrod, 00:51:28.98\00:51:31.99 Nimrod, of course, the beginning of his kingdom, 00:51:32.02\00:51:33.62 as the scripture says, was babel. 00:51:33.66\00:51:35.82 And of course, a region of babel, 00:51:35.86\00:51:37.69 extending from that was Canaan, 00:51:37.73\00:51:39.69 the land of the Canaanites, and out of that in 00:51:39.73\00:51:42.23 with mixture of these heathen, sinful iniquity filled nations 00:51:42.26\00:51:47.57 was that of the Amorites. 00:51:47.60\00:51:49.04 So I go back to verse 16 there, "But in the fourth generation 00:51:49.07\00:51:51.61 they shall return here, 00:51:51.64\00:51:52.97 for the iniquity of the Amorites 00:51:53.01\00:51:54.54 is not yet completed." 00:51:54.58\00:51:56.24 There was something about these nations. 00:51:56.28\00:51:57.98 These were extreme, ruthless, and rebellious people, 00:51:58.01\00:52:03.12 the heathen of all heathens. 00:52:03.15\00:52:04.52 And so I believe that God gave them a chance, 00:52:04.55\00:52:06.59 just like as He did Nineveh, 00:52:06.62\00:52:08.12 Nineveh was a ruthless, barbaric people. 00:52:08.16\00:52:10.73 And God called them and, you know, fortunately, 00:52:10.76\00:52:13.40 Praise the Lord, they responded. 00:52:13.43\00:52:15.26 You know, they responded to the call of God, 00:52:15.30\00:52:17.23 and they repented, 00:52:17.27\00:52:18.60 and they were converted in many of these nations, 00:52:18.63\00:52:20.47 these heathen nations 00:52:20.50\00:52:21.97 that was not necessarily the case, 00:52:22.00\00:52:23.37 especially for the Amorites. 00:52:23.41\00:52:24.94 And then there's a message here though, out of this. 00:52:24.97\00:52:27.01 We have to say that sometimes 00:52:27.04\00:52:29.04 while we may not have the answer, 00:52:29.08\00:52:31.01 the direct answer, you know, 00:52:31.05\00:52:32.38 there's not an explicit text 00:52:32.41\00:52:33.75 that says, you know, God did this... 00:52:33.78\00:52:35.35 You know, that really satisfies the mind, 00:52:35.38\00:52:37.39 a lot of us still wonder, "Why God? 00:52:37.42\00:52:39.79 You know, was there no other way, Lord, 00:52:39.82\00:52:41.42 is there no other way that 00:52:41.46\00:52:42.79 you could have spared the lives of these little children, 00:52:42.82\00:52:45.06 really, God, children?" 00:52:45.09\00:52:46.49 And it's tough for us to deal with those things. 00:52:46.53\00:52:49.60 But nonetheless, 00:52:49.63\00:52:50.97 that's what faith is about, right? 00:52:51.00\00:52:52.83 As Pastor James, 00:52:52.87\00:52:54.44 just brought out so beautifully. 00:52:54.47\00:52:56.04 Trusting in God is 100% the central issue here. 00:52:56.07\00:53:01.34 In the lesson brings this out, 00:53:01.38\00:53:03.04 I have to read these verse because they're beautiful. 00:53:03.08\00:53:04.71 Faith isn't just about loving God 00:53:04.75\00:53:06.51 on a beautiful day in a pretty forest 00:53:06.55\00:53:08.52 full of wonderful sights and sounds. 00:53:08.55\00:53:11.25 It's also about, and I love this, 00:53:11.29\00:53:13.15 it's also about trusting in Him despite 00:53:13.19\00:53:15.92 where we don't fully understand. 00:53:15.96\00:53:18.59 You know, God, I don't understand 00:53:18.63\00:53:19.96 why you allow this to happen. 00:53:20.00\00:53:21.33 I don't understand why you're allowing me 00:53:21.36\00:53:22.70 to have to go through this, Lord. 00:53:22.73\00:53:24.07 You know, we often have those questions. 00:53:24.10\00:53:25.43 You know we hear people all the time say, 00:53:25.47\00:53:26.94 "Why does bad things happen to good people?" 00:53:26.97\00:53:28.84 I love Pastor Lomacang's response to that. 00:53:28.87\00:53:30.84 He says that's assuming that they're good people, right? 00:53:30.87\00:53:34.58 But we have these questions, "Lord, why do you..." 00:53:34.61\00:53:36.91 We never turn to the enemy and say, 00:53:36.95\00:53:39.11 "You know, why is the enemy... 00:53:39.15\00:53:40.48 You know, why is he doing this?" 00:53:40.52\00:53:41.85 Right? 00:53:41.88\00:53:43.22 He's the one responsible for all the bad things, not God. 00:53:43.25\00:53:45.02 But yet, we also tend to turn to God as, 00:53:45.05\00:53:47.06 "Lord, you didn't prevent it. 00:53:47.09\00:53:49.02 God, it's also your fault 00:53:49.06\00:53:50.39 because you could have stopped it." 00:53:50.43\00:53:51.79 You know, can we bring ourselves 00:53:51.83\00:53:53.43 to a point where we know who God is, 00:53:53.46\00:53:55.70 we're reminded of who he is that 00:53:55.73\00:53:57.87 we can trust in Him that 00:53:57.90\00:53:59.23 even when we don't fully understand. 00:53:59.27\00:54:01.44 "Lord, I don't know why You're allowing this to happen. 00:54:01.47\00:54:03.64 Lord, I don't know why You allow that 00:54:03.67\00:54:05.24 person's life to be taken. 00:54:05.27\00:54:06.61 I don't know why You're allowing this person 00:54:06.64\00:54:08.24 or those people are these, in this case, 00:54:08.28\00:54:10.05 these nations to be completely 00:54:10.08\00:54:11.61 wiped out destroyed, men, women, and child." 00:54:11.65\00:54:13.88 But can you trust that God's ways 00:54:13.92\00:54:16.75 are higher than our ways? 00:54:16.79\00:54:18.12 Isn't that what Isaiah 58:8 says? 00:54:18.15\00:54:20.09 It says, " For my thoughts are not your thoughts, 00:54:20.12\00:54:21.89 neither are your ways my ways," says the Lord. 00:54:21.92\00:54:25.09 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, 00:54:25.13\00:54:28.00 so are my ways higher than your ways 00:54:28.03\00:54:30.00 and my thoughts than your thoughts." 00:54:30.03\00:54:32.63 I'll just end with this point. 00:54:32.67\00:54:34.40 We may be faced with many opportunities 00:54:34.44\00:54:36.67 and reasons that will lead us to question the plans of God. 00:54:36.71\00:54:39.37 "God, I don't understand why in the world, 00:54:39.41\00:54:41.04 You let any of these bad things to go on. 00:54:41.08\00:54:43.24 I know You're not responsible God! 00:54:43.28\00:54:45.11 But You certainly sometimes allow them." 00:54:45.15\00:54:46.48 And other times He'll intervene. 00:54:46.51\00:54:47.85 Right? 00:54:47.88\00:54:49.22 You intervene sometimes and sometimes You don't. 00:54:49.25\00:54:50.59 We may have sufficient reasoning, 00:54:50.62\00:54:52.59 oftentimes that are presented for us 00:54:52.62\00:54:54.39 to question the plans of God. 00:54:54.42\00:54:56.76 But yet, we will never have sufficient reason to question 00:54:56.79\00:54:59.39 his goodness. 00:54:59.43\00:55:00.83 We serve a good God. 00:55:00.86\00:55:02.20 Can You trust Him even through the trial? 00:55:02.23\00:55:03.97 Even through the unknown? 00:55:04.00\00:55:06.23 That's the question of faith. 00:55:06.27\00:55:07.60 That's the test of faith. Amen. 00:55:07.64\00:55:09.47 Very good. Thank you, all of you. Wow! 00:55:09.50\00:55:11.24 Pastor James give me a summary of the day you covered. 00:55:11.27\00:55:14.18 Well, I think that one of the things is 00:55:14.21\00:55:16.01 really clear in these stories in Deuteronomy, 00:55:16.04\00:55:18.95 and in the history is that God is the God of hope. 00:55:18.98\00:55:22.28 Yeah, we despite our failures, those can be opened doors. 00:55:22.32\00:55:24.72 You know, we think about the 40 years in the wilderness, 00:55:24.75\00:55:27.29 you know, all those who over 20 died, 00:55:27.32\00:55:30.23 including Moses. 00:55:30.26\00:55:31.76 And Moses died because the last minute, 00:55:31.79\00:55:34.23 you know, he said that 00:55:34.26\00:55:35.60 we could blame it on the people 00:55:35.63\00:55:36.97 they're murmuring, they're complaining, 00:55:37.00\00:55:38.33 but yet Moses continued 00:55:38.37\00:55:39.70 to hope in spite of that big failure, 00:55:39.73\00:55:41.07 and guess what, God resurrected the peace 00:55:41.10\00:55:42.47 in heaven right now. 00:55:42.50\00:55:43.84 So we always have hope, despite our failures. 00:55:43.87\00:55:45.71 Amen. Amen. 00:55:45.74\00:55:47.08 Jill. Amen. Mine was on leadership. 00:55:47.11\00:55:49.34 And whether you're a leader or whether you're a follower, 00:55:49.38\00:55:52.48 the key is to know that God is the one in charge. 00:55:52.51\00:55:55.32 We depend on Him, we look to Him, we rely on Him. 00:55:55.35\00:55:59.29 And that God seeks to bring about 00:55:59.32\00:56:01.89 an organizational structure of men and women 00:56:01.92\00:56:04.93 who come together and help finish the work. 00:56:04.96\00:56:07.20 To me that's a beautiful picture, 00:56:07.23\00:56:09.23 what God wants to do at the end of time, 00:56:09.26\00:56:11.33 joining hands together, and sharing Jesus 00:56:11.37\00:56:13.77 with the lost and dying world. 00:56:13.80\00:56:15.27 Amen and amen. 00:56:15.30\00:56:16.64 I just want to repeat five takeaways from my lesson. 00:56:16.67\00:56:19.57 If we don't know who we are in Christ, 00:56:19.61\00:56:22.08 we're going to have the same grasshopper 00:56:22.11\00:56:24.41 identity syndrome they did. 00:56:24.45\00:56:26.45 Fear and depression can cause us to focus 00:56:26.48\00:56:30.02 on negative circumstances rather than hoping 00:56:30.05\00:56:32.62 in the Lord for deliverance. 00:56:32.65\00:56:34.49 Rebellion can cause us to reject 00:56:34.52\00:56:38.03 and humiliate God's chosen and faithful leaders. 00:56:38.06\00:56:42.50 There is a point of no return 00:56:42.53\00:56:44.63 for stiff-necked unbelieving people. 00:56:44.67\00:56:48.17 God's longsuffering mercy can come to an end 00:56:48.20\00:56:51.74 and He will deal out His righteous judgment. 00:56:51.77\00:56:55.48 But just as God intervened 00:56:55.51\00:56:59.35 to save faithful Joshua and Caleb, 00:56:59.38\00:57:02.92 they're the only 2 over 20 00:57:02.95\00:57:04.72 who went into the Promised Land, 00:57:04.75\00:57:06.52 He's going to intervene again at the end time. 00:57:06.55\00:57:10.39 Let this mind be in You, which is also in Christ Jesus. 00:57:10.43\00:57:13.60 Jesus said, "Lord, if there's any way, 00:57:13.63\00:57:15.70 this can pass of me," 00:57:15.73\00:57:17.63 all the bad things it's about 00:57:17.67\00:57:19.00 to happen to sinless Jesus, right? 00:57:19.03\00:57:21.00 He says, nevertheless, not my will but yours be done. 00:57:21.04\00:57:24.24 Have the mind of Jesus. 00:57:24.27\00:57:26.78 There's so much to cover 00:57:26.81\00:57:28.14 when we talk about the history of Moses. 00:57:28.18\00:57:30.05 He's given us five books 00:57:30.08\00:57:31.41 and the New Testament writers have quoted him many times 00:57:31.45\00:57:35.15 to remind us that learn from what happened. 00:57:35.18\00:57:38.59 You know, they said, 00:57:38.62\00:57:39.95 "Those who do not learn from the past 00:57:39.99\00:57:41.92 are bound to repeat it." 00:57:41.96\00:57:43.69 But I want to end with this point 00:57:43.73\00:57:45.06 as we get ready for the next lesson, 00:57:45.09\00:57:46.56 which is in fact, the everlasting covenant. 00:57:46.59\00:57:49.93 Lesson number three, remember these words, 00:57:49.96\00:57:52.43 one day we will all experience divine amnesia. 00:57:52.47\00:57:56.84 Hebrews 8:12, 00:57:56.87\00:57:58.57 "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, 00:57:58.61\00:58:01.61 and their sins and their lawless deeds 00:58:01.64\00:58:03.55 I will remember no more." 00:58:03.58\00:58:06.08 God bless you until we see you again. 00:58:06.11\00:58:08.22 Amen. 00:58:08.25\00:58:09.58
