Looking forward to this one. 00:03:23.57\00:03:25.67 It's amazingly insightful. Amen. 00:03:25.70\00:03:28.24 All right, Sister Shelley. Mine's a two-way street. 00:03:28.27\00:03:30.94 And this isn't what it's about. 00:03:30.97\00:03:32.74 But what I will say is, 00:03:32.77\00:03:35.18 Sabbath School Panel is a two-way street. 00:03:35.21\00:03:37.48 We learn to teach but we teach to learn. 00:03:37.51\00:03:42.42 That's good. 00:03:42.45\00:03:43.79 Praise the Lord. Awesome. 00:03:43.82\00:03:45.15 It's upon us. Yeah. 00:03:45.19\00:03:46.52 Now well, you know, we never go into the Word of God 00:03:46.55\00:03:47.96 without prayer, do we? 00:03:47.99\00:03:49.49 You know, we need the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:03:49.52\00:03:51.49 And we ask for the Holy Spirit. 00:03:51.53\00:03:52.86 We thoroughly believe the Holy Spirit will be here 00:03:52.89\00:03:55.40 and help each one of us here 00:03:55.43\00:03:56.77 and those you know, your ears get big. 00:03:56.80\00:03:59.20 We want your ears to get big and your brain, 00:03:59.23\00:04:01.20 the mind to get big so you can comprehend 00:04:01.24\00:04:03.00 the things of God So, Sister Jill, 00:04:03.04\00:04:04.87 you're right here next, would you pray please? 00:04:04.91\00:04:06.81 Absolutely. 00:04:06.84\00:04:08.18 Holy Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, 00:04:08.21\00:04:10.11 grateful for the gift of Your Word 00:04:10.15\00:04:12.68 and Your Holy Spirit. 00:04:12.71\00:04:14.22 We ask just now that You would open up our minds 00:04:14.25\00:04:17.19 and hearts to not only hear, but to walk in obedience to 00:04:17.22\00:04:21.29 what you show us in Jesus' name. 00:04:21.32\00:04:23.83 Amen. Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:04:23.86\00:04:25.69 So you had those study guides out right now 00:04:25.73\00:04:27.43 and we always go out to the memory verse, 00:04:27.46\00:04:29.93 I'd say the memory verse, the memory text. 00:04:29.96\00:04:32.20 I did that when I was young. 00:04:32.23\00:04:33.57 Memory verse, have you memorized 00:04:33.60\00:04:34.94 your memory verse? 00:04:34.97\00:04:36.30 Well, memory text here, and this found in Jonah 4:11. 00:04:36.34\00:04:40.34 Now these are powerful words here, 00:04:40.38\00:04:42.31 we should pay attention to them. 00:04:42.34\00:04:43.68 It says, and I should, notice, "And should I not pity Nineveh, 00:04:43.71\00:04:47.62 that great city, in which are more than," notice this, 00:04:47.65\00:04:50.72 somebody may not realize, "120,000 persons, 00:04:50.75\00:04:56.32 who cannot discern between their right hand 00:04:56.36\00:04:58.59 and their left hand and much livestock." 00:04:58.63\00:05:02.50 Kind of interesting thought there, ain't it? 00:05:02.53\00:05:04.30 You take 120,000 here in Southern Illinois 00:05:04.33\00:05:06.57 in the cornfield, you're going to have to go 00:05:06.60\00:05:08.17 from the southern end of Illinois, 00:05:08.20\00:05:10.01 way up to at least the middle of the state, 00:05:10.04\00:05:12.37 it seemed like before we get 120,000, 00:05:12.41\00:05:14.18 just kind of the area there. 00:05:14.21\00:05:16.71 It's very interesting to me. 00:05:16.75\00:05:18.08 So anyway, this subject that 00:05:18.11\00:05:20.05 we're talking about today is 00:05:20.08\00:05:21.45 one of the most interesting stories, 00:05:21.48\00:05:23.89 I think, in the Bible. 00:05:23.92\00:05:25.25 I really do, an illustration, this is a God, 00:05:25.29\00:05:27.36 we can illustrate a lot of things from this, 00:05:27.39\00:05:30.03 and probably one of the first ones 00:05:30.06\00:05:31.59 maybe I ever heard, I don't know that about Jonah, 00:05:31.63\00:05:35.03 and the whale and what happened. 00:05:35.06\00:05:36.60 And so, I looked at it just 00:05:36.63\00:05:38.30 from those little tidbits on there. 00:05:38.33\00:05:40.44 But now I know the panel is going to bring out 00:05:40.47\00:05:41.80 some good spiritual lessons in there. 00:05:41.84\00:05:43.81 Here we have a man prophet that was called by God, 00:05:43.84\00:05:47.01 he was, God equipped him 00:05:47.04\00:05:48.38 to give a message that needed to be given 00:05:48.41\00:05:50.15 because Nineveh was soon to be destroyed. 00:05:50.18\00:05:52.68 And so he went forward to do it. 00:05:52.71\00:05:54.75 But all of a sudden, he begin to think, 00:05:54.78\00:05:56.18 sometimes we do that when God calls us to do 00:05:56.22\00:05:57.92 something that's too big for us, 00:05:57.95\00:05:59.52 too big for our britches sometime we might get, 00:05:59.55\00:06:01.12 think we can do it. 00:06:01.16\00:06:02.49 But sometime, as we think about it, 00:06:02.52\00:06:03.86 we get a little bit frightened and say, 00:06:03.89\00:06:05.23 well, you know, but remember God's call 00:06:05.26\00:06:06.86 is upon you. 00:06:06.90\00:06:08.23 So make sure that you follow through. 00:06:08.26\00:06:10.67 He did follow through to begin with, but what happened? 00:06:10.70\00:06:13.37 Kind of have a change of mind and change your heart 00:06:13.40\00:06:16.27 and the people heard to begin with 00:06:16.30\00:06:17.87 or what did they do? 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.47 They heard to begin with, and then they repented. 00:06:19.51\00:06:22.74 Yes. 00:06:22.78\00:06:24.11 Interesting thought, 00:06:24.15\00:06:25.48 I'd be glad to hear what the panel says about that. 00:06:25.51\00:06:26.95 The call was made, they repented. 00:06:26.98\00:06:28.98 And then they, then what said, the prophet got mad. 00:06:29.02\00:06:32.59 Prophet got all upset. 00:06:32.62\00:06:34.46 Because the people had repeated, he looked bad, 00:06:34.49\00:06:37.13 because he prophesied something else 00:06:37.16\00:06:38.59 that was going to happen. 00:06:38.63\00:06:39.96 So in this lesson, we're gonna look at Jonah 00:06:40.00\00:06:41.33 and the rest, you know, lessons we can learn from this, 00:06:41.36\00:06:44.37 his restlessness and his lack of peace that 00:06:44.40\00:06:47.60 he had in his heart and his mind. 00:06:47.64\00:06:50.11 Remember, Jonah had been called 00:06:50.14\00:06:51.94 in Sunday's lesson Running Away. 00:06:51.97\00:06:54.04 I don't know about you. 00:06:54.08\00:06:55.54 Sometime, I've been a lot of personal things, 00:06:55.58\00:06:57.38 and just forgive me if I do. 00:06:57.41\00:06:59.05 But you know, we learn from personal experiences, 00:06:59.08\00:07:01.28 lessons sometimes that we just never forget. 00:07:01.32\00:07:03.69 We can read them, we can learn them 00:07:03.72\00:07:05.05 from the Word of God, 00:07:05.09\00:07:06.42 that experiences that God allows us 00:07:06.45\00:07:07.79 to go through that teaches us there, 00:07:07.82\00:07:10.33 again all of them. 00:07:10.36\00:07:11.69 I've never forgotten, ever forgotten. 00:07:11.73\00:07:15.16 Now, may God help us to always, you know, keep those in mind. 00:07:15.20\00:07:17.97 Now remember, this wasn't the first rodeo. 00:07:18.00\00:07:20.87 I'd say that in a nice way for Jonah. 00:07:20.90\00:07:22.94 Because 2 Kings 14 tells us this, 00:07:22.97\00:07:25.37 that God had called him before to do a job 00:07:25.41\00:07:28.44 to be one before he appeared, 00:07:28.48\00:07:30.31 and what was soon to take place? 00:07:30.35\00:07:32.55 And he seemed like 00:07:32.58\00:07:33.92 he followed on through with that. 00:07:33.95\00:07:35.32 But this time, evidently, 00:07:35.35\00:07:37.45 and that's some time in our life. 00:07:37.49\00:07:38.82 Sometime, we're just obedient, man, we just flash here, 00:07:38.85\00:07:40.76 and we are there by the grace of God. 00:07:40.79\00:07:42.12 And next time, we say, whoa, wait a minute, 00:07:42.16\00:07:45.03 God, I'm not up to that. 00:07:45.06\00:07:46.83 He said, I wouldn't have called you, 00:07:46.86\00:07:48.20 I wouldn't have equipped you 00:07:48.23\00:07:49.56 if I thought you weren't up to it. 00:07:49.60\00:07:50.93 But you know what He says to me at this time? 00:07:50.97\00:07:52.53 I know you're not but I am, He said. 00:07:52.57\00:07:54.40 That's what we need. 00:07:54.44\00:07:55.77 That's right, He brings you right back down. 00:07:55.80\00:07:57.14 So he decided to run away. 00:07:57.17\00:08:00.84 And is that always a good thing to do when God calls us 00:08:00.88\00:08:04.51 or maybe to run away from anything 00:08:04.55\00:08:06.78 rather than to meet may be head on by the grace of God. 00:08:06.82\00:08:09.58 And he didn't just run away, 00:08:09.62\00:08:10.95 he just didn't hide in his house, 00:08:10.99\00:08:12.32 he went in the opposite direction. 00:08:12.35\00:08:14.92 You know, that's fearful sometime for us, 00:08:14.96\00:08:16.56 instead of just saying God, 00:08:16.59\00:08:18.13 Nineveh's a little bit too much. 00:08:18.16\00:08:19.76 Sometimes we make a complete turn around 00:08:19.79\00:08:21.40 and we go the opposite direction. 00:08:21.43\00:08:22.86 And it makes it very difficult to turn around again, 00:08:22.90\00:08:24.87 and go back in the way He wants us to go. 00:08:24.90\00:08:27.67 And, you know, he thought, why should I do this thing? 00:08:27.70\00:08:31.07 And I think you'll understand it better as we go along 00:08:31.11\00:08:32.91 in the lesson. 00:08:32.94\00:08:34.28 Why should I do this thing if I, 00:08:34.31\00:08:36.44 if I do this and follow through God 00:08:36.48\00:08:38.21 with what you want me to do, it may cost me my life. 00:08:38.25\00:08:41.85 Now, most of us say, well, we understand 00:08:41.88\00:08:43.92 that's the end of things that's going to cost us 00:08:43.95\00:08:46.52 our life as end result. 00:08:46.55\00:08:48.19 But do we really believe it? 00:08:48.22\00:08:51.56 Do we really believe that what you're giving today, 00:08:51.59\00:08:55.13 if you're giving the message God 00:08:55.16\00:08:56.60 has asked us to do, 00:08:56.63\00:08:58.00 it may cost you your life, 00:08:58.03\00:09:00.00 it may cost you a three day vacation, 00:09:00.04\00:09:04.57 you'll get that little along as we go, right? 00:09:04.61\00:09:06.91 It might cost about some people 00:09:06.94\00:09:08.34 getting upset with you just a little bit 00:09:08.38\00:09:10.18 if you follow God's plan. 00:09:10.21\00:09:12.25 But God does have a plan, He understands all that, 00:09:12.28\00:09:14.52 but He still asks us to go forward and do 00:09:14.55\00:09:16.18 what He's asked to do. 00:09:16.22\00:09:17.75 Now, he thought, you know, Jonah had thought about it, 00:09:17.79\00:09:20.02 you know, getting into, you know, 00:09:20.06\00:09:22.22 the Assyrians I think 00:09:22.26\00:09:23.59 were very easy going to begin with, 00:09:23.63\00:09:27.30 then they had a change of heart too. 00:09:27.33\00:09:29.66 And so as Jonah thought about them, 00:09:29.70\00:09:31.33 because they're even compared to, 00:09:31.37\00:09:33.03 I think it's in Ezekiel 31 that they were considered 00:09:33.07\00:09:35.74 as a tree in the garden. 00:09:35.77\00:09:37.91 Isn't that interesting? 00:09:37.94\00:09:39.27 They were like, it tells us that that 00:09:39.31\00:09:40.64 the tree in the garden of God was likened to him. 00:09:40.68\00:09:43.21 And his beauty, all the trees of Eden that 00:09:43.24\00:09:45.45 were in the garden of God envied him. 00:09:45.48\00:09:48.42 Ezekiel 31, read that when you have time, 00:09:48.45\00:09:50.35 3 through 9. 00:09:50.39\00:09:51.72 So evidently, this group was familiar. 00:09:51.75\00:09:54.62 They were helpful. 00:09:54.66\00:09:55.99 They wanted to do it, doing the right thing. 00:09:56.02\00:09:59.26 And all of a sudden, there was a change 00:09:59.29\00:10:00.63 that took place, a change took place. 00:10:00.66\00:10:03.60 And so Jonah was familiar with this change. 00:10:03.63\00:10:07.64 And he realized then that he wasn't on the good side 00:10:07.67\00:10:09.90 maybe anymore if he did 00:10:09.94\00:10:11.27 what he may be that upset him that he would die. 00:10:11.31\00:10:14.34 They would persecute him. 00:10:14.38\00:10:15.71 So he's thinking, well, maybe it's not a good time 00:10:15.74\00:10:17.08 to go along. 00:10:17.11\00:10:19.31 But you know, again, the Assyrians they changed 00:10:19.35\00:10:21.08 and what they changed to, like, maybe we do some time. 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.99 We follow Jesus Christ. 00:10:24.02\00:10:26.09 He's our Lord and our Savior, and we just, 00:10:26.12\00:10:28.32 we just want to just be, 00:10:28.36\00:10:29.82 I want to say snuggle up to Him all the time. 00:10:29.86\00:10:31.93 You know, just be close to Him. 00:10:31.96\00:10:33.86 John did that, he laid his head on the breast, 00:10:33.90\00:10:35.83 right, Christ, you know, 00:10:35.86\00:10:37.20 and I'm sure they prayed together, 00:10:37.23\00:10:38.57 and they wept together and they had joy together. 00:10:38.60\00:10:41.70 But here Assyria became self-centered. 00:10:41.74\00:10:44.47 And all of a sudden, they began, 00:10:44.51\00:10:45.84 they wanted to go back 00:10:45.87\00:10:47.21 and start worshipping those idols again. 00:10:47.24\00:10:48.98 They're doing everything toward Nineveh, 00:10:49.01\00:10:51.61 and all the people of God, they're doing the wrong thing. 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.85 And God says, I'm going to give them a warning, 00:10:53.88\00:10:55.85 something's going to happen. 00:10:55.88\00:10:57.22 They're turning their back on Him. 00:10:57.25\00:10:58.65 And instead of, you know, going to the true God. 00:10:58.69\00:11:01.42 So God sent, notice this, 00:11:01.46\00:11:03.32 Jonah with a message of, remember it's of warning. 00:11:03.36\00:11:06.46 And for the very first time, that message of warning, 00:11:06.49\00:11:08.60 the people straightened up. 00:11:08.63\00:11:10.47 My grandpa always said, Kenny, straighten up and act right. 00:11:10.50\00:11:13.30 And so you know what? 00:11:13.34\00:11:14.67 They straightened up for a little time 00:11:14.70\00:11:16.04 and they acted right. 00:11:16.07\00:11:17.41 But then the time come, 00:11:17.44\00:11:18.77 they didn't act right anymore, you know? 00:11:18.81\00:11:21.01 And so, God began, in fact Nahum talked about, 00:11:21.04\00:11:23.71 read, jot this down before our time runs. 00:11:23.75\00:11:25.48 Nahum 3:1-5, gives a description 00:11:25.51\00:11:29.65 of this terrible power that 00:11:29.68\00:11:31.22 we were talking about, in words like these, 00:11:31.25\00:11:33.36 so in case you realize 00:11:33.39\00:11:34.72 what Jonah is still saying, well, he should have done. 00:11:34.76\00:11:37.43 You know, there was reasons he had, 00:11:37.46\00:11:38.89 and weren't good reason, but they were reasons, 00:11:38.93\00:11:40.60 number one is because the Bible says, 00:11:40.63\00:11:43.10 Nahum said, "Woe to the bloody city." 00:11:43.13\00:11:46.53 Woe to the bloody city. 00:11:46.57\00:11:47.90 And again, he said, it is all full of lies and robbery. 00:11:47.94\00:11:51.67 God knows what he's saying, God knows what he's doing. 00:11:51.71\00:11:53.98 And He sent a warning that you're going to be destroyed 00:11:54.01\00:11:55.98 if you don't change your way there in Nineveh. 00:11:56.01\00:11:57.91 And then he said, there, there are a multitude of slain, 00:11:57.95\00:12:00.98 behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord. 00:12:01.02\00:12:04.55 If God ever comes to that point, 00:12:04.59\00:12:05.99 He says He's against you. 00:12:06.02\00:12:07.56 You know, really, that's serious business. 00:12:07.59\00:12:08.92 Yeah. 00:12:08.96\00:12:10.29 That's serious business, that means decisions 00:12:10.33\00:12:11.66 already been made unless 00:12:11.69\00:12:13.03 there's certainly repentance, something's going to happen. 00:12:13.06\00:12:15.73 Example, the prophet in Chapter 2 00:12:15.76\00:12:18.77 there we looked right in the prophesied Zephaniah, 00:12:18.80\00:12:24.41 I think it was Zephaniah Chapter 2 00:12:24.44\00:12:26.57 prophesied about the desolation 00:12:26.61\00:12:29.08 and the pride and the arrogance of Assyria, 00:12:29.11\00:12:32.01 and what was going to happen to Nineveh. 00:12:32.05\00:12:33.52 So that'd be good to be able to look up 00:12:33.55\00:12:34.88 and see Zephaniah, I think Chapter 2. 00:12:34.92\00:12:37.12 So anyway, we realized 00:12:37.15\00:12:38.65 there was a fight that was scheduled, 00:12:38.69\00:12:40.39 something was going to go on here, 00:12:40.42\00:12:42.96 and that God was sending warnings. 00:12:42.99\00:12:44.33 I'm very, very thankful. 00:12:44.36\00:12:45.99 Isaiah 30:28 says, 00:12:46.03\00:12:47.63 "A righteous judge shall sift the nations." 00:12:47.66\00:12:51.53 A righteous judge shall what? Sift the nations. 00:12:51.57\00:12:54.07 I believe right now, 00:12:54.10\00:12:55.60 and let's put it right now today, 00:12:55.64\00:12:57.07 God is sifting the nations right now. 00:12:57.11\00:12:59.41 God is holding out right now saying, 00:12:59.44\00:13:01.14 hey, who's going to follow Me? 00:13:01.18\00:13:03.45 Who's going to do what I've asked to do 00:13:03.48\00:13:04.81 and the will in His Word, 00:13:04.85\00:13:06.61 so are you going to do that today? 00:13:06.65\00:13:08.18 Am I going to do that by the grace of God? 00:13:08.22\00:13:10.39 In Jonah 1:1-2, it says, 00:13:10.42\00:13:12.39 "The word of the Lord came to Jonah," 00:13:12.42\00:13:13.82 right then right there, there it is. 00:13:13.86\00:13:15.42 "Word came to Jonah, 'Arise, go to Nineveh 00:13:15.46\00:13:18.03 and give the city a cry against it, 00:13:18.06\00:13:19.93 for their wickedness has come up before Me." 00:13:19.96\00:13:23.30 If you think the wickedness in the world, 00:13:23.33\00:13:25.13 they're getting away with it today, 00:13:25.17\00:13:26.50 you better think again, in the cities and the towns 00:13:26.53\00:13:29.17 and what's going on in the world, 00:13:29.20\00:13:30.54 God has a watchful eye on His people 00:13:30.57\00:13:32.61 what's happening in this world today. 00:13:32.64\00:13:34.28 God sending warning, He's sending messages, 00:13:34.31\00:13:36.51 He's sending prophecies, He's sending, right? 00:13:36.54\00:13:38.11 Open your eyes, see these things, 00:13:38.15\00:13:39.88 because the judgments are coming. 00:13:39.91\00:13:42.12 You know, we need to realize that we live in that hour. 00:13:42.15\00:13:44.85 We live in the hour that we hear God is calling 00:13:44.89\00:13:47.42 and He is choosing different men and women 00:13:47.46\00:13:49.52 and even children to be able to speak for Him. 00:13:49.56\00:13:52.89 He knows who He's choosing, 00:13:52.93\00:13:54.26 He knows as He's equipping them, 00:13:54.30\00:13:57.20 and that they will be ready 00:13:57.23\00:13:58.57 so if God is impressing your heart 00:13:58.60\00:13:59.93 and your mind, lines up with the Bible to do 00:13:59.97\00:14:02.27 something even though they're gonna say, 00:14:02.30\00:14:03.64 oh, you might get in trouble for it or all my, you know, 00:14:03.67\00:14:06.88 if people are not going to like it at all, 00:14:06.91\00:14:08.61 if it's, right, lines up with the Word of God, 00:14:08.64\00:14:10.98 I encourage you please do it. 00:14:11.01\00:14:12.78 You don't want to spend three days 00:14:12.81\00:14:14.38 in the belly of a whale. 00:14:14.42\00:14:16.35 You know, you don't want to do that. 00:14:16.38\00:14:17.72 So you want to go ahead right and do exactly 00:14:17.75\00:14:19.12 what God want to do 00:14:19.15\00:14:20.59 and not reason human reasoning for why I don't want to do it. 00:14:20.62\00:14:24.59 But give a lot of reasons why. 00:14:24.63\00:14:26.13 Number one simply is because God said to do it. 00:14:26.16\00:14:30.33 Amen. Amen. 00:14:30.37\00:14:31.80 On these lessons, Sister Jill. 00:14:31.83\00:14:33.17 Thank you so much, Pastor Kenny, Running Away. 00:14:33.20\00:14:37.67 We look at Monday's lesson, which is A Three-Day Rest, 00:14:37.71\00:14:41.21 and we're really looking at Jonah Chapter 2 00:14:41.24\00:14:44.41 is the focus of my lesson. 00:14:44.45\00:14:46.11 You know, the Book of Jonah, 00:14:46.15\00:14:47.48 some scholars say is the greatest missionary book 00:14:47.52\00:14:50.69 in the Old Testament. 00:14:50.72\00:14:52.05 The book shows God is caring deeply 00:14:52.09\00:14:54.76 for the salvation of nations 00:14:54.79\00:14:56.83 beyond His chosen people, which is Israel. 00:14:56.86\00:14:59.89 It shows God's evangelistic heart 00:14:59.93\00:15:03.06 for the Gentiles 00:15:03.10\00:15:04.43 for those who were not God's chosen people. 00:15:04.47\00:15:06.90 And, of course, as Pastor Kenny already talked about, 00:15:06.94\00:15:09.20 the Prophet Jonah was narrow-minded. 00:15:09.24\00:15:12.07 He was stubborn, he was hypocritical, 00:15:12.11\00:15:14.78 and he was pro-Israel to the exclusion 00:15:14.81\00:15:17.35 of anyone else even meriting God's favor. 00:15:17.38\00:15:21.98 The book really shows the irony of a gracious God 00:15:22.02\00:15:25.52 who has a very ungracious missionary. 00:15:25.55\00:15:30.23 Jonah ran away from God, and God's calling on his life, 00:15:30.26\00:15:33.53 God's calling to go to Nineveh as Pastor Kenny 00:15:33.56\00:15:35.80 already talked about, he boarded the ship, 00:15:35.83\00:15:39.13 and the waves and the storm arose. 00:15:39.17\00:15:41.60 And finally Jonah says, "Well, I'm the culprit of this storm, 00:15:41.64\00:15:44.84 and they tossed him overboard, 00:15:44.87\00:15:47.18 and the sea it ceased its raging. 00:15:47.21\00:15:50.05 But that's not the end of the story. 00:15:50.08\00:15:51.51 Because God not only wants to save the nation, 00:15:51.55\00:15:54.65 the city of Nineveh, 00:15:54.68\00:15:56.92 he also wants to save His prophet. 00:15:56.95\00:15:59.42 That's Jonah. So in Jonah 1:17. 00:15:59.45\00:16:02.72 This is right before we pick it up in Chapter 2, 00:16:02.76\00:16:04.79 but Jonah 1:17, it says, 00:16:04.83\00:16:06.16 "The Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. 00:16:06.19\00:16:10.67 And Jonah was in the belly of the fish 00:16:10.70\00:16:12.60 or in the belly of the whale, three days and three nights." 00:16:12.63\00:16:16.27 We know that Jesus reference this to illustrate 00:16:16.30\00:16:19.14 His upcoming experience with death 00:16:19.17\00:16:21.68 as far as three days and three nights 00:16:21.71\00:16:23.18 from the crucifixion to the resurrection. 00:16:23.21\00:16:25.78 But we're going to look at Jonah Chapter 2, 00:16:25.81\00:16:27.42 this is Jonah's prayer to God 00:16:27.45\00:16:30.52 from the belly of the whale, 00:16:30.55\00:16:33.05 and I found eight lessons from his prayer. 00:16:33.09\00:16:36.19 So let's look at those eight lessons. 00:16:36.22\00:16:37.66 We're in Jonah 2:1, lesson number one, 00:16:37.69\00:16:41.10 "Then Jonah prayed to the Lord, 00:16:41.13\00:16:42.66 his God, from the fish's belly." 00:16:42.70\00:16:45.13 It's interesting, Jonah is a man of prayer. 00:16:45.17\00:16:47.10 He prays when he's in trouble. 00:16:47.14\00:16:48.60 And we'll also see when we get over 00:16:48.64\00:16:50.04 to Pastor John's lesson that he prays when he's mad, 00:16:50.07\00:16:52.97 and he prays when he's in anguish 00:16:53.01\00:16:55.04 or distress, or in anger. 00:16:55.08\00:16:58.41 Lesson number one, 00:16:58.45\00:16:59.88 when you are in trouble, God hears. 00:16:59.91\00:17:05.55 You can talk to God anytime about anything. 00:17:05.59\00:17:09.49 You don't have to be in church. 00:17:09.52\00:17:10.93 You don't have to be on bended knee. 00:17:10.96\00:17:13.06 You can be in the belly of a fish, 00:17:13.09\00:17:14.50 and I don't think 00:17:14.53\00:17:15.86 that's ever happened before or since. 00:17:15.90\00:17:17.60 But you could be as Jonah was in not a cathedral, 00:17:17.63\00:17:21.64 not the temple or a sanctuary, he's in a fish. 00:17:21.67\00:17:24.97 And he talked to God, 00:17:25.01\00:17:26.78 because when you're in trouble, God hears. 00:17:26.81\00:17:30.25 Peter, what did he say? 00:17:30.28\00:17:31.61 He's sinking in the waves. 00:17:31.65\00:17:34.22 And he didn't have time to kneel and pray. 00:17:34.25\00:17:36.12 He didn't have time to do something official. 00:17:36.15\00:17:38.05 He just said, "Lord, save me." 00:17:38.09\00:17:41.59 I think about Nehemiah. 00:17:41.62\00:17:43.02 Remember, he was the king's cupbearer. 00:17:43.06\00:17:44.99 And when he was going before the king, 00:17:45.03\00:17:47.63 and the king asked why he was sad, 00:17:47.66\00:17:49.40 and why his countenance was troubled? 00:17:49.43\00:17:51.20 What does it say? 00:17:51.23\00:17:52.57 And I prayed to the God of heaven. 00:17:52.60\00:17:56.44 When you're in trouble, God hears. 00:17:56.47\00:17:58.71 Lesson number two. Let's look at the next verse. 00:17:58.74\00:18:01.04 "And Jonah said, he said, 'I cried out to the Lord, 00:18:01.08\00:18:05.25 because of my affliction, and He answered me. 00:18:05.28\00:18:09.82 Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, 00:18:09.85\00:18:13.29 and You heard my voice." 00:18:13.32\00:18:15.52 When you're in trouble, God answers. 00:18:15.56\00:18:19.59 He doesn't just hear, God answers. 00:18:19.63\00:18:22.70 When you're in trouble cry out to God, 00:18:22.73\00:18:25.50 He will hear you, He will answer you. 00:18:25.53\00:18:28.40 Psalm 120:1 says, "In my distress, 00:18:28.44\00:18:32.41 I cried to the Lord." 00:18:32.44\00:18:33.78 And guess what? "He heard me." 00:18:33.81\00:18:37.21 Isaiah 65:24, 00:18:37.25\00:18:39.15 "Before they call, I will answer. 00:18:39.18\00:18:41.55 And while they're yet speaking, I will hear." 00:18:41.58\00:18:45.52 You know, sometimes when we are in trouble, 00:18:45.55\00:18:47.99 we don't want to go to God. 00:18:48.02\00:18:49.39 That's the farthest thing on our minds. 00:18:49.42\00:18:51.66 I know, there has been times in my life where I think, 00:18:51.69\00:18:54.86 but it was my own choice to run away. 00:18:54.90\00:18:57.27 It was my own choice to turn my back on God. 00:18:57.30\00:18:59.63 It was my own choice to do my own thing. 00:18:59.67\00:19:02.90 God, I'm not sure can I come to You? 00:19:02.94\00:19:05.17 That is the time you need God the most. 00:19:05.21\00:19:07.38 When you're in trouble, God will always hear you. 00:19:07.41\00:19:10.65 When you are in trouble, God will always answer you. 00:19:10.68\00:19:14.08 Lesson number three, is in verse 3. 00:19:14.12\00:19:16.25 Jonah 2:3, "For You cast me into the deep, 00:19:16.28\00:19:20.26 into the heart of the seas, 00:19:20.29\00:19:22.99 and the floods surrounded me, 00:19:23.02\00:19:26.16 all your billows and your waves passed over me." 00:19:26.19\00:19:30.17 Now this one might be a little hard 00:19:30.20\00:19:31.53 to catch at the beginning. 00:19:31.57\00:19:33.00 But when you're in trouble, quote scripture. 00:19:33.03\00:19:37.94 This is actually a scripture 00:19:37.97\00:19:40.48 from Psalm 42:7, 00:19:40.51\00:19:45.35 Jonah would have heard this 00:19:45.38\00:19:47.02 when he went to temple, he would have heard 00:19:47.05\00:19:48.85 this in the tabernacle. 00:19:48.88\00:19:50.69 It is a psalm of the sons of Korah, 00:19:50.72\00:19:52.89 who were actually Levites. 00:19:52.92\00:19:55.16 That psalm is Psalm 42:7, 00:19:55.19\00:19:56.79 it says, "Deep calls unto deep 00:19:56.83\00:19:58.39 at the noise of Your waterfalls, 00:19:58.43\00:19:59.89 all Your waves and billows have gone over me." 00:19:59.93\00:20:03.06 So when you are in trouble, turn to the Word of God. 00:20:03.10\00:20:07.20 Open up the Word of God and claim those promises 00:20:07.24\00:20:11.47 over your life 00:20:11.51\00:20:12.84 because all of God's promises are yes 00:20:12.87\00:20:14.31 and amen in Christ Jesus. 00:20:14.34\00:20:16.41 Amen. That's right. 00:20:16.44\00:20:17.78 You know, 2 Chronicles 20, we have Jehoshaphat, 00:20:17.81\00:20:20.08 and the Ammonites and the Moabites 00:20:20.12\00:20:21.68 are coming against the city, and he's terrified. 00:20:21.72\00:20:24.62 And you see, I love this passage, 00:20:24.65\00:20:26.49 but you see this seven step process 00:20:26.52\00:20:29.26 of getting deliverance from your enemies. 00:20:29.29\00:20:31.39 But one of those steps that Jehoshaphat followed 00:20:31.43\00:20:34.76 was to claim a Bible promise of 00:20:34.80\00:20:36.93 what God had done for the children 00:20:36.97\00:20:38.97 of Israel in the past. 00:20:39.00\00:20:40.67 And then he said, God, this is what You did before. 00:20:40.70\00:20:42.80 I know You can do this again. 00:20:42.84\00:20:45.34 So when you're in trouble, quote scripture. 00:20:45.37\00:20:47.74 Lesson number four, we're in Jonah 2:4. 00:20:47.78\00:20:50.51 "Then I said, 'I have been cast out of Your sight, 00:20:50.55\00:20:53.58 yet I will look again toward Your holy temple." 00:20:53.62\00:20:57.32 When you are in trouble, seek God, reach out for God. 00:20:57.35\00:21:02.12 Don't shrink from Him. 00:21:02.16\00:21:03.49 Don't hide from Him, reach out. 00:21:03.53\00:21:06.93 You know where Jonah knew 00:21:06.96\00:21:08.80 where to find God was in the sanctuary. 00:21:08.83\00:21:11.83 Psalm 77:13, "Your way, O God, 00:21:11.87\00:21:15.67 is in the sanctuary, 00:21:15.70\00:21:17.27 who is so great a God as our God?" 00:21:17.31\00:21:21.34 You know, Jonah understood. 00:21:21.38\00:21:22.91 Exodus 25:8, "Let them make 00:21:22.94\00:21:25.65 Me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them." 00:21:25.68\00:21:28.65 He understood God was in the sanctuary. 00:21:28.68\00:21:31.89 And so he searched for his God there. 00:21:31.92\00:21:35.32 Let's look at lesson number five. 00:21:35.36\00:21:37.53 Jonah 2:5-6, "The waters they surrounded me, 00:21:37.56\00:21:41.66 even to my soul, the deep closed around me, 00:21:41.70\00:21:44.67 weeds were wrapped around my head. 00:21:44.70\00:21:47.34 I went down to the moorings of the mountains, 00:21:47.37\00:21:50.11 the earth with its bars closed behind me forever, 00:21:50.14\00:21:53.17 yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord, my God." 00:21:53.21\00:21:59.18 When you're in trouble, God delivers. 00:21:59.21\00:22:01.48 When all seems lost, God delivers. 00:22:01.52\00:22:04.75 When there is no way out 00:22:04.79\00:22:06.59 and you are stuck in your Egypt experience 00:22:06.62\00:22:08.79 or caught in the belly of the whale, 00:22:08.82\00:22:10.56 and there is no way for you to get out, 00:22:10.59\00:22:12.89 God shows up and He delivers. 00:22:12.93\00:22:16.36 Psalm 40:2 says the same thing. 00:22:16.40\00:22:18.77 "He brought me up out of the horrible pit, 00:22:18.80\00:22:21.07 out of the miry clay, and he set my feet on a rock, 00:22:21.10\00:22:25.34 and he established my steps." 00:22:25.37\00:22:28.31 Lesson number six. 00:22:28.34\00:22:29.68 Jonah 2:7, "When my soul fainted within me, 00:22:29.71\00:22:34.02 I remembered the Lord, 00:22:34.05\00:22:35.48 and my prayer went up to You, into Your holy temple." 00:22:35.52\00:22:38.99 See that sanctuary language again. 00:22:39.02\00:22:41.59 Lesson six, when you're in trouble, 00:22:41.62\00:22:43.59 never forget God. 00:22:43.63\00:22:45.79 When his soul fainted, when he was in trouble, 00:22:45.83\00:22:47.86 when it seemed like everything was overwhelming him 00:22:47.90\00:22:50.47 around him, he remembered the Lord. 00:22:50.50\00:22:54.54 God is our refuge and strength, 00:22:54.57\00:22:57.41 a very present help in time of trouble. 00:22:57.44\00:23:00.18 That's Psalm 46:1. 00:23:00.21\00:23:02.31 Let's look at lesson number seven. 00:23:02.34\00:23:04.45 Jonah 2:8-9, "Those who regard 00:23:04.48\00:23:07.52 worthless idols forsake their own Mercy. 00:23:07.55\00:23:10.22 But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving, 00:23:10.25\00:23:14.79 I will pay what I have vowed. 00:23:14.82\00:23:16.76 Salvation is from the Lord." 00:23:16.79\00:23:19.69 When you are in trouble, practice gratefulness. 00:23:19.73\00:23:23.23 Now that might seem impossible, 00:23:23.26\00:23:26.50 that might seem when I'm in trouble, 00:23:26.53\00:23:28.57 how in the world am I supposed to give thanks? 00:23:28.60\00:23:31.77 You know, Hebrews 13:15 says, 00:23:31.81\00:23:33.78 "Therefore by Him let us 00:23:33.81\00:23:35.14 continually offer the sacrifice of praise, 00:23:35.18\00:23:40.02 that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name." 00:23:40.05\00:23:42.75 Sometimes thanksgiving is a sacrifice. 00:23:42.78\00:23:44.89 And it is not easy 00:23:44.92\00:23:46.49 when you're stuck in the belly of the whale 00:23:46.52\00:23:48.36 and you don't know how you're going to get out. 00:23:48.39\00:23:50.79 How he said, I was sacrificed to you 00:23:50.83\00:23:53.03 with the voice of thanksgiving. 00:23:53.06\00:23:54.76 And yet in the midst of that, God shows up. 00:23:54.80\00:23:58.27 Lesson number eight. Jonah 2:10. 00:23:58.30\00:24:00.27 This is how it ends. 00:24:00.30\00:24:01.64 "So the Lord spoke to the fish, 00:24:01.67\00:24:03.44 and it vomited Jonah on the dry land." 00:24:03.47\00:24:07.58 When you are in trouble, 00:24:07.61\00:24:09.14 God is still in control and He can deliver you. 00:24:09.18\00:24:12.58 The waves and the seas and even the fish, 00:24:12.61\00:24:15.68 they're still under God's control. 00:24:15.72\00:24:17.79 So know today, when you're in trouble, 00:24:17.82\00:24:20.49 God hears, God answers. 00:24:20.52\00:24:22.82 Quote scripture, seek God, God will deliver you. 00:24:22.86\00:24:27.36 Do not forget Him. 00:24:27.40\00:24:28.73 Practice gratefulness and now most importantly, 00:24:28.76\00:24:32.30 God is still in control and He would deliver you. 00:24:32.33\00:24:35.50 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:24:35.54\00:24:37.21 What a good foundation. Praise God for that. 00:24:37.24\00:24:39.14 And there's a lot more to come. Gonna take a short break. 00:24:39.17\00:24:41.61 We'll be right back. 00:24:41.64\00:24:42.98 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:48.98\00:24:50.32 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:24:50.35\00:24:52.55 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:24:52.59\00:24:55.76 Well, you can by visiting 3abnsabbathschoolpanel.com 00:24:55.79\00:25:00.63 A clean design makes it easy 00:25:00.66\00:25:03.16 to find the program you're looking for. 00:25:03.20\00:25:05.20 There are also links to the Adult Bible Study Guide 00:25:05.23\00:25:08.67 so you can follow along. 00:25:08.70\00:25:10.31 Sharing is easy. 00:25:10.34\00:25:11.74 Just click share and choose your favorite social media. 00:25:11.77\00:25:15.01 Share a link, save a life for eternity. 00:25:15.04\00:25:19.58 Thank you for staying with us. 00:25:19.61\00:25:21.02 I'm gonna skip right over quickly 00:25:21.05\00:25:22.38 to Brother Jason Bradley, 00:25:22.42\00:25:23.75 because I want to hear the message to talk about 00:25:23.79\00:25:25.45 Mission Accomplished. 00:25:25.49\00:25:27.06 I love that Tuesday's lesson. Amen. 00:25:27.09\00:25:28.96 Tuesday's lesson. 00:25:28.99\00:25:30.33 You know, one of the things that I love is that, you know, 00:25:30.36\00:25:32.33 God's Word does not return void, 00:25:32.36\00:25:35.56 and everybody loves to accomplish their mission. 00:25:35.60\00:25:37.70 So I want you to imagine 00:25:37.73\00:25:39.67 if you were told to go to New York City 00:25:39.70\00:25:42.27 and preach a message that 00:25:42.30\00:25:43.64 inform New Yorkers that their city 00:25:43.67\00:25:45.11 would be overthrown in 40 days? 00:25:45.14\00:25:48.84 What if God gave you the message? 00:25:48.88\00:25:51.05 Would you go on the first, the first call? 00:25:51.08\00:25:54.35 I thought about that as I was studying this lesson. 00:25:54.38\00:25:56.85 And as much as I'd love to say, yes, I go. 00:25:56.89\00:26:00.89 The truth is, I probably would have been 00:26:00.92\00:26:02.82 hesitant like Jonah. 00:26:02.86\00:26:05.19 Sometimes we can be 00:26:05.23\00:26:06.56 pretty hard-headed as human beings, 00:26:06.59\00:26:08.36 when God tells us to do something 00:26:08.40\00:26:10.83 outside of our comfort zone. 00:26:10.87\00:26:13.37 Jonah gave us a prime example of that. 00:26:13.40\00:26:16.04 And we'll begin this lesson by looking at Jonah Chapter 3, 00:26:16.07\00:26:19.31 beginning in verse 1. 00:26:19.34\00:26:22.58 "Now, the word of the Lord 00:26:22.61\00:26:23.95 came to Jonah the second time saying, 00:26:23.98\00:26:26.05 'Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city and preach to 00:26:26.08\00:26:29.68 it the message that I tell you.' 00:26:29.72\00:26:31.55 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, 00:26:31.59\00:26:33.76 according to the word of the Lord. 00:26:33.79\00:26:35.82 Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, 00:26:35.86\00:26:38.73 a three-day journey in extent. 00:26:38.76\00:26:41.56 And Jonah began to enter the city 00:26:41.60\00:26:43.67 on the first day's walk. 00:26:43.70\00:26:45.37 Then he cried out and said, 00:26:45.40\00:26:46.74 'Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown!'" 00:26:46.77\00:26:51.04 Now that was an extremely short sermon, 00:26:51.07\00:26:53.98 but it was a powerful one nonetheless. 00:26:54.01\00:26:56.58 Let's read on to see how the people of Nineveh 00:26:56.61\00:26:58.75 responded to the message. 00:26:58.78\00:27:00.55 We are in Jonah 3:5 now. 00:27:00.58\00:27:03.79 "So the people of Nineveh believed God, 00:27:03.82\00:27:06.42 proclaimed the fast and put on sackcloth, 00:27:06.45\00:27:09.66 from the greatest to the least of them. 00:27:09.69\00:27:11.99 Then word came to the king of Nineveh, 00:27:12.03\00:27:14.00 and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, 00:27:14.03\00:27:17.47 covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes." 00:27:17.50\00:27:21.10 Now, I want us to pause right here for a second, 00:27:21.14\00:27:24.21 because the sackcloth 00:27:24.24\00:27:25.57 and ashes hold great significance. 00:27:25.61\00:27:29.18 Sackcloth was a garment made of coarse material 00:27:29.21\00:27:32.61 such as a black goat hair, and it was worn 00:27:32.65\00:27:35.95 when someone was going through a terrible disaster, 00:27:35.98\00:27:39.15 or they were trying to show remorse or penitence. 00:27:39.19\00:27:42.99 As far as the ashes are concerned, 00:27:43.02\00:27:44.89 we were formed 00:27:44.93\00:27:46.49 in the dust and to the dust we shall return when we die. 00:27:46.53\00:27:49.96 So the ashes are a reminder of our death 00:27:50.00\00:27:53.23 and a symbol of sorrow for our sins. 00:27:53.27\00:27:56.57 Now, let's pick back up in Jonah 3:7. 00:27:56.60\00:28:00.41 "And he caused it to be proclaimed 00:28:00.44\00:28:02.84 and published throughout Nineveh 00:28:02.88\00:28:04.95 by the decree of the king and his nobles saying, 00:28:04.98\00:28:07.75 'Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, 00:28:07.78\00:28:11.29 taste anything, do not let them eat, 00:28:11.32\00:28:13.96 or drink water." 00:28:13.99\00:28:15.32 I don't know how you get animals to fast, 00:28:15.36\00:28:17.33 not drink or eat or anything like that. 00:28:17.36\00:28:19.53 I can barely get myself to fast and not eat and all that stuff. 00:28:19.56\00:28:23.16 "But let man and beast be covered 00:28:23.20\00:28:24.97 with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God. 00:28:25.00\00:28:28.30 Yes, let everyone turn from his evil way 00:28:28.34\00:28:31.11 and from the violence that is in his hands. 00:28:31.14\00:28:34.01 Who can tell if God will turn 00:28:34.04\00:28:35.88 and relent and turn away from His fierce anger 00:28:35.91\00:28:38.51 so that we may not perish? 00:28:38.55\00:28:40.35 Then Gods saw their works that 00:28:40.38\00:28:42.12 they turned from their evil way, 00:28:42.15\00:28:44.32 and God relented from the disaster that 00:28:44.35\00:28:46.96 He had said He would bring upon them 00:28:46.99\00:28:49.46 and He did not do it." 00:28:49.49\00:28:51.46 God gave Jonah a very important no fluff, 00:28:51.49\00:28:54.80 no nonsense message to deliver 00:28:54.83\00:28:57.07 to the people of Nineveh, 00:28:57.10\00:28:58.63 and they listened and repented. 00:28:58.67\00:29:01.00 The Holy Spirit was clearly working on their hearts. 00:29:01.04\00:29:03.87 Now you may be asking, what is true repentance? 00:29:03.91\00:29:07.78 So let's look at a few different passages 00:29:07.81\00:29:10.01 and extract some of the elements. 00:29:10.05\00:29:11.98 We'll start with Jonah 3:6-9, 00:29:12.01\00:29:14.85 and I know that we read this 00:29:14.88\00:29:16.22 but we're going to look at it again 00:29:16.25\00:29:17.69 with a different lens. 00:29:17.72\00:29:19.19 "Then word came to the king of Nineveh, 00:29:19.22\00:29:22.29 and he rose from his throne 00:29:22.32\00:29:24.26 and laid aside his robe, covered himself 00:29:24.29\00:29:27.66 with sackcloth and sat in ashes." 00:29:27.70\00:29:30.90 Imagine the king getting off of his throne 00:29:30.93\00:29:33.13 and then sitting in ashes 00:29:33.17\00:29:35.00 and taking his robe off, 00:29:35.04\00:29:38.11 and putting the sackcloth on. 00:29:38.14\00:29:40.28 Verse 7, "And he caused it to be proclaimed 00:29:40.31\00:29:42.51 and published throughout Nineveh 00:29:42.54\00:29:44.08 by the decree of the king 00:29:44.11\00:29:45.71 and his nobles, saying, 'Let neither man nor beast, 00:29:45.75\00:29:48.68 herd nor flock, taste anything, 00:29:48.72\00:29:50.92 do not let them eat, or drink water. 00:29:50.95\00:29:53.09 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, 00:29:53.12\00:29:56.46 and cry mightily to God.'" 00:29:56.49\00:29:59.46 You know, perhaps you've gone through something 00:29:59.49\00:30:01.36 and you've had to just cry out to the Lord. 00:30:01.40\00:30:03.50 Imagine this cry that went out. 00:30:03.53\00:30:05.50 "He cried mightily to God. 00:30:05.53\00:30:07.30 Yes, let everyone turn from his evil way 00:30:07.34\00:30:10.51 and from the violence that is in his hands. 00:30:10.54\00:30:12.97 Who can tell if God will turn and relent 00:30:13.01\00:30:15.51 and turn away from His fierce anger 00:30:15.54\00:30:17.71 so that we may not perish?" 00:30:17.75\00:30:20.48 Jeremiah 25:5, "They said, 00:30:20.52\00:30:24.29 'Repent now everyone of his evil way 00:30:24.32\00:30:27.72 and his evil doings, and dwell in the land 00:30:27.76\00:30:30.83 that the Lord has given to you 00:30:30.86\00:30:32.79 and your fathers forever and ever.'" 00:30:32.83\00:30:35.93 So repent from your evil way and your evil doings. 00:30:35.96\00:30:40.87 And then what comes, 00:30:40.90\00:30:42.24 you dwell in the land that the Lord has given to you 00:30:42.27\00:30:45.37 and your fathers forever and ever. 00:30:45.41\00:30:47.41 Sometimes we get in the way of God's blessings. 00:30:47.44\00:30:51.88 He wants to pour out blessings, 00:30:51.91\00:30:53.25 but we're in the way and we need to repent. 00:30:53.28\00:30:55.62 Ezekiel 14:6 says, 00:30:55.65\00:30:58.09 "Therefore say to the house of Israel, 00:30:58.12\00:31:00.32 thus says the Lord God, repent, turn away from your idols 00:31:00.36\00:31:04.53 and turn your faces away from all your abominations." 00:31:04.56\00:31:08.23 Notice we're seeing repent, repent, repent. 00:31:08.26\00:31:10.90 In Revelation 2:5, it says, "Remember, therefore, 00:31:10.93\00:31:14.50 from where you have fallen, 00:31:14.54\00:31:16.47 repent and do the first works 00:31:16.50\00:31:18.87 or else I will come to you quickly 00:31:18.91\00:31:20.91 and remove your lampstand from its place, 00:31:20.94\00:31:24.01 unless you repent." 00:31:24.05\00:31:26.85 In order to repent, we must do the following. 00:31:26.88\00:31:30.49 One, we need to listen to the Holy Spirit. 00:31:30.52\00:31:33.12 Two, we need to acknowledge our wrongdoing 00:31:33.15\00:31:35.96 by confessing our sins to God. 00:31:35.99\00:31:39.16 Three, we must turn from our evil ways. 00:31:39.19\00:31:42.80 And four, we must turn to the Lord. 00:31:42.83\00:31:46.63 Now you may be saying, well, 00:31:46.67\00:31:48.00 three and four sound a lot of like. 00:31:48.04\00:31:49.64 Well, you can make behavioral modifications, 00:31:49.67\00:31:52.04 but you're not going to have a genuine transformation 00:31:52.07\00:31:54.18 until you submit, surrender 00:31:54.21\00:31:56.14 and commit your life to the Lord. 00:31:56.18\00:31:58.01 Repentance is a crucial part of our Christian experience, 00:31:58.05\00:32:01.88 because as Pastor Lomacang always says, 00:32:01.92\00:32:04.75 we are saints under construction. 00:32:04.79\00:32:07.66 In Romans 6:23, it says, "For the wages of sin is death, 00:32:07.69\00:32:12.73 but the gift of God," 00:32:12.76\00:32:14.36 this is my favorite part, "but the gift of God 00:32:14.40\00:32:16.90 is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord." 00:32:16.93\00:32:20.14 I don't want the death. 00:32:20.17\00:32:21.50 I want the eternal life. Thank God for that gift. 00:32:21.54\00:32:24.67 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, 00:32:24.71\00:32:28.48 He is faithful 00:32:28.51\00:32:29.88 and just to forgive us our sins, 00:32:29.91\00:32:32.18 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 00:32:32.21\00:32:34.88 Now, one would think that Jonah 00:32:34.92\00:32:37.45 would have been happy that the mission was accomplished, 00:32:37.49\00:32:40.66 and the people of Nineveh repented. 00:32:40.69\00:32:43.16 But unfortunately, that wasn't the case. 00:32:43.19\00:32:45.69 As the lesson points out, strangely, Jonah, 00:32:45.73\00:32:49.06 who has experienced God's grace for himself, 00:32:49.10\00:32:51.63 personally firsthand seems to think that 00:32:51.67\00:32:54.80 God's grace is something so exclusive, 00:32:54.84\00:32:58.31 that only some they have an opportunity, 00:32:58.34\00:33:01.81 may have opportunity to rest in it. 00:33:01.84\00:33:04.81 So that gives us some serious food for thought. 00:33:04.85\00:33:06.98 Absolutely, yeah. 00:33:07.02\00:33:08.72 Is there someone in your life that has wronged you? 00:33:08.75\00:33:12.79 They've asked God for forgiveness, 00:33:12.82\00:33:15.06 and they've asked you for forgiveness, 00:33:15.09\00:33:17.26 but you haven't forgiven them yet. 00:33:17.29\00:33:19.59 Matthew 6:14, says, 00:33:19.63\00:33:22.46 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, 00:33:22.50\00:33:25.83 your heavenly Father will also forgive you." 00:33:25.87\00:33:29.40 So you know what that means. 00:33:29.44\00:33:30.77 You got to forgive that individual 00:33:30.81\00:33:32.37 if you want forgiveness. 00:33:32.41\00:33:34.04 As human beings, 00:33:34.08\00:33:35.41 we tend to hold people to their past sins, 00:33:35.44\00:33:37.61 as if God's grace is exclusive to just us. 00:33:37.65\00:33:41.95 This is not a country club, 00:33:41.98\00:33:43.75 God extends His grace to everyone 00:33:43.79\00:33:47.16 who will partake. 00:33:47.19\00:33:48.52 That's right. 00:33:48.56\00:33:49.89 If someone walks into your church, tatted up, 00:33:49.92\00:33:52.59 smelling like cigarettes, would they see Christ 00:33:52.63\00:33:55.23 by the way you welcome them 00:33:55.26\00:33:56.67 or would they see judgment by the way you look at them 00:33:56.70\00:33:59.53 and shun them away? 00:33:59.57\00:34:00.90 It's good. 00:34:00.94\00:34:02.27 Remember that, 00:34:02.30\00:34:03.64 when they truly get to know Jesus, 00:34:03.67\00:34:05.01 those things will fall away. 00:34:05.04\00:34:07.01 That's right. Come on. 00:34:07.04\00:34:08.38 Interestingly enough, the Ninevites 00:34:08.41\00:34:10.75 didn't have all the stories of God's tender 00:34:10.78\00:34:14.35 leading that the Israelites had. 00:34:14.38\00:34:16.92 But they responded to him in a positive manner. 00:34:16.95\00:34:20.39 Praise God. 00:34:20.42\00:34:22.29 I believe we are living in the last days 00:34:22.32\00:34:24.13 and just as the Ninevites repented of their sins, 00:34:24.16\00:34:28.06 we must repent of ours 00:34:28.10\00:34:30.40 and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus 00:34:30.43\00:34:32.93 'cause time is short, 00:34:32.97\00:34:34.50 repent, repent, repent and turn toward the Lord. 00:34:34.54\00:34:38.41 Amen. Amen. 00:34:38.44\00:34:39.87 Praise the Lord. Thank you. 00:34:39.91\00:34:41.54 Yes. Okay. 00:34:41.58\00:34:43.35 Thank you, Jason, for this. 00:34:43.38\00:34:45.35 This prophet, Jonah, this I call him 00:34:45.38\00:34:48.72 the reluctant prophet or the man 00:34:48.75\00:34:52.55 who couldn't outrun God or who was more obedient 00:34:52.59\00:34:56.29 to Him or the fish. 00:34:56.32\00:34:57.99 It's right. 00:34:58.03\00:34:59.36 It depends on how we look at the story. 00:34:59.39\00:35:02.06 A couple of things I found in, and I'm in Jonah Chapter 4. 00:35:02.10\00:35:06.20 And mine is called An Angry Restless Missionary. 00:35:06.23\00:35:09.97 Verses 1 to 11 describe 00:35:10.01\00:35:13.04 Jonah's reluctant evangelistic series, 00:35:13.07\00:35:16.51 his anger for God's faithfulness, 00:35:16.54\00:35:19.75 and his attitude about how God turned a crisis 00:35:19.78\00:35:25.62 of magnificent proportions that could have been 00:35:25.65\00:35:28.99 into one of the greatest revival series 00:35:29.02\00:35:32.69 and salvation of an entire city. 00:35:32.73\00:35:35.56 But before I dive into that, 00:35:35.60\00:35:37.43 I want to bring out a couple of things 00:35:37.47\00:35:38.90 that are really important in the story of Jonah. 00:35:38.93\00:35:40.44 Because when you look at Jonah, 00:35:40.47\00:35:42.00 there are seven questions that are asked in the Book of Jonah. 00:35:42.04\00:35:44.94 And it starts out the story. 00:35:44.97\00:35:46.31 I know you covered Chapter 1, 00:35:46.34\00:35:47.68 but I want to just go back 00:35:47.71\00:35:49.04 and highlight these very quickly. 00:35:49.08\00:35:50.41 Let's go to Jonah Chapter 1. 00:35:50.45\00:35:52.01 A very quick, quick peek into that. 00:35:52.05\00:35:54.98 First thing I want to bring out is, 00:35:55.02\00:35:57.12 the direction of your life 00:35:57.15\00:35:58.49 is an indication of your spiritual condition. 00:35:58.52\00:36:00.96 When the Lord told Jonah to go to Nineveh, 00:36:00.99\00:36:02.62 what did Jonah do? 00:36:02.66\00:36:03.99 If you look at verse 3, in Jonah Chapter 1, 00:36:04.03\00:36:06.53 the Bible says he went down to Joppa. 00:36:06.56\00:36:11.23 He not only that, he paid the fair, 00:36:11.27\00:36:14.10 the wages of sin, and went down into the ship, 00:36:14.14\00:36:19.37 that to go to Tarshish. 00:36:19.41\00:36:21.94 Nineveh was to the east, Tarshish was to the west, 00:36:21.98\00:36:26.31 he went in the opposite direction. 00:36:26.35\00:36:28.28 And then when the storm arose, what did he do? 00:36:28.32\00:36:31.55 Verse 5, "He went down into 00:36:31.59\00:36:34.59 the lowest parts of the ship, 00:36:34.62\00:36:37.29 and laid down and was fast asleep." 00:36:37.33\00:36:42.06 All of these are indicators. 00:36:42.10\00:36:45.83 The direction of your life 00:36:45.87\00:36:47.20 is an indication of your spiritual condition. 00:36:47.24\00:36:49.34 Jonah went down, down, down, sleep. 00:36:49.37\00:36:53.38 That's what happens when you are running from God, 00:36:53.41\00:36:56.01 your life cannot go up. 00:36:56.04\00:36:57.81 Don't think that obedience ever results in success. 00:36:57.85\00:37:01.15 I mean, disobedience ever results in success. 00:37:01.18\00:37:03.99 Obedience is a precursor to success. 00:37:04.02\00:37:06.99 Don't think that you can run from God as David said, 00:37:07.02\00:37:09.62 where would I go? 00:37:09.66\00:37:11.49 If I go to the uttermost parts of the heaven, You're there. 00:37:11.53\00:37:14.33 If I make my bed in the grave, You're there. 00:37:14.36\00:37:16.20 If I go to the lowest parts of the ocean, 00:37:16.23\00:37:18.30 or the depths of the sea, You're there. 00:37:18.33\00:37:20.67 Where can we run from God? 00:37:20.70\00:37:22.47 And the answer is nowhere. That's right. 00:37:22.50\00:37:27.28 But let's look at the seven questions 00:37:27.31\00:37:28.81 that the Lord asked Jonah. 00:37:28.84\00:37:30.81 And these are all and found in Jonah 1:6, 8 and 11. 00:37:30.85\00:37:35.55 Let's look at the first question 00:37:35.58\00:37:36.92 in verse 6. 00:37:36.95\00:37:38.29 And this is the... Actually in verse 6. 00:37:38.32\00:37:40.72 "So the captain came to him and said to him, 00:37:40.76\00:37:44.39 'What do you mean, oh, sleeper?" 00:37:44.43\00:37:46.80 I like the King James Version. 00:37:46.83\00:37:48.16 What meanest thou, O sleeper? 00:37:48.20\00:37:51.13 In other words, how could you be indifferent 00:37:51.17\00:37:54.27 in the midst of a crisis? 00:37:54.30\00:37:56.40 And this is a question that we should ask ourselves today. 00:37:56.44\00:38:00.28 It is in when the world is in crisis, 00:38:00.31\00:38:02.48 the worst thing we should be is asleep. 00:38:02.51\00:38:05.28 That's why the Apostle Paul says, 00:38:05.31\00:38:06.65 now it is high time to awake out of sleep. 00:38:06.68\00:38:10.25 In the crisis, the worst thing 00:38:10.29\00:38:12.32 the servant of God can be is asleep. 00:38:12.35\00:38:16.36 What meanest thou, O sleeper? 00:38:16.39\00:38:18.23 So the other part in verse 8, the other part in verse 8. 00:38:18.26\00:38:21.43 Look what it says in verse 8, 00:38:21.46\00:38:23.43 and it says, 00:38:23.47\00:38:25.40 "What is your occupation? 00:38:25.43\00:38:30.51 What is your occupation?" Okay? 00:38:30.54\00:38:33.88 And so why would you ask that question? 00:38:33.91\00:38:37.15 Why would you ask that question? 00:38:37.18\00:38:38.91 That question is asking, what do you with your time, 00:38:38.95\00:38:43.18 time of accountability? 00:38:43.22\00:38:44.55 What is your occupation? What takes up your time? 00:38:44.59\00:38:47.52 What in fact are you focusing on? 00:38:47.56\00:38:49.52 And there's another question that bring up. 00:38:49.56\00:38:51.29 Let's go on and look at verse again. 00:38:51.33\00:38:53.80 It says, "Where do you come from?" 00:38:53.83\00:38:56.43 Well, actually, the first part of verse 8 00:38:56.46\00:38:58.30 has a question that didn't start 00:38:58.33\00:38:59.67 with the word what or where. 00:38:59.70\00:39:01.10 But it asked the question, 00:39:01.14\00:39:02.50 for whose cause is this trouble upon us? 00:39:02.54\00:39:07.18 There's always an impact to disobedience. 00:39:07.21\00:39:10.08 Your obedience can mean the salvation 00:39:10.11\00:39:12.28 or the loss of someone around you. 00:39:12.31\00:39:14.15 And these mariners, 00:39:14.18\00:39:15.52 these sailors were negatively impacted 00:39:15.55\00:39:17.62 by a disobedient servant. 00:39:17.65\00:39:21.42 And I'll tell you, 00:39:21.46\00:39:22.82 I wouldn't want to be a disobedient servant 00:39:22.86\00:39:24.73 on an airplane trying to flee from God. 00:39:24.76\00:39:27.50 Can you imagine? Fix that to a plane nowadays. 00:39:27.53\00:39:29.56 Why is this plane rattling? 00:39:29.60\00:39:31.60 Because I'm not supposed to be on here. 00:39:31.63\00:39:33.37 Can you imagine? Who's causing this? 00:39:33.40\00:39:36.40 Can they turn to Jason in the airplane? 00:39:36.44\00:39:38.87 And they do to Jason what they did to Jonah, 00:39:38.91\00:39:40.61 only this time they opened the door. 00:39:40.64\00:39:42.14 Oh, my. You just, here's a parachute. 00:39:42.18\00:39:44.78 Yeah. And you know what? 00:39:44.81\00:39:46.72 What is your occupation? 00:39:46.75\00:39:48.08 The third thing is, where did you come from? 00:39:48.12\00:39:51.12 Where do you come from? 00:39:51.15\00:39:52.55 Where did your journey begin? 00:39:52.59\00:39:55.39 A lot of us have to understand 00:39:55.42\00:39:56.76 where our journey begins has a lot to do 00:39:56.79\00:39:59.33 with where God found us. 00:39:59.36\00:40:00.73 Yes. You know, where are you from? 00:40:00.76\00:40:02.56 Where are you from? Where each one of us is? 00:40:02.60\00:40:04.43 Where are each one of us from? 00:40:04.47\00:40:06.80 That's the origin of our journey. 00:40:06.84\00:40:08.30 The other one is what is your country? 00:40:08.34\00:40:10.14 The place of your influence. 00:40:10.17\00:40:11.84 I think differently from Shelley. 00:40:11.87\00:40:13.34 She's from Texas, I'm from New York. 00:40:13.38\00:40:16.44 Jill is from... Illinois. 00:40:16.48\00:40:18.85 Illinois. Wow. 00:40:18.88\00:40:20.75 Or really, Massachusetts. 00:40:20.78\00:40:22.85 You also New York 00:40:22.88\00:40:24.22 and Kenny's from Southern Illinois. 00:40:24.25\00:40:26.62 Where are you from? What is your country? 00:40:26.65\00:40:29.26 And then the other question of what people are you, 00:40:29.29\00:40:31.49 your identity? 00:40:31.53\00:40:33.13 And it's amazing in the moment 00:40:33.16\00:40:34.50 when that question was asked that 00:40:34.53\00:40:36.46 Jonah had the nerve to say, I'm a Hebrew. 00:40:36.50\00:40:39.23 Well, why are you going into this direction? 00:40:39.27\00:40:41.87 You are a disobedient individual, 00:40:41.90\00:40:44.01 but you are proud about your identity? 00:40:44.04\00:40:45.37 Yeah. 00:40:45.41\00:40:46.74 But the last question he asked was, 00:40:46.78\00:40:49.41 what shall we do to you that the sea may be common to us? 00:40:49.44\00:40:53.25 When a crisis hits, we need to take 00:40:53.28\00:40:56.25 personal responsibility 00:40:56.28\00:40:58.42 for what we can do to reverse that crisis. 00:40:58.45\00:41:01.72 What can we do to you that the sea may become to us. 00:41:01.76\00:41:05.26 Three very important points about this angry, 00:41:05.29\00:41:08.56 restless missionary. 00:41:08.60\00:41:11.07 Let's go to 2 Peter 3:9, 00:41:11.10\00:41:13.74 and I bring out three very important points. 00:41:13.77\00:41:15.50 One, Jonah was angry 00:41:15.54\00:41:17.91 because God's mission was successful. 00:41:17.94\00:41:20.54 What he fails to realize is God 00:41:20.58\00:41:23.01 is interested in the salvation of everyone. 00:41:23.04\00:41:28.05 2 Peter 3:9, "The Lord is not slack 00:41:28.08\00:41:32.75 concerning His promises, 00:41:32.79\00:41:34.22 some count slackness, 00:41:34.26\00:41:35.69 but is long suffering toward us, 00:41:35.72\00:41:37.69 not willing that any should perish, 00:41:37.73\00:41:40.03 but that all should come to repentance." 00:41:40.06\00:41:42.46 Jonah knew that, but Jonah 00:41:42.50\00:41:44.87 was more concerned about his standing 00:41:44.90\00:41:46.53 as a Hebrew than those who were not. 00:41:46.57\00:41:48.87 And this was a cancer that 00:41:48.90\00:41:50.51 never really rooted itself 00:41:50.54\00:41:51.87 out of the scribes and Pharisees. 00:41:51.91\00:41:53.91 That's why they use terms like dogs. 00:41:53.94\00:41:56.11 They refer to the Gentiles as dogs. 00:41:56.14\00:41:58.41 That was the reason behind the rich man 00:41:58.45\00:41:59.95 and Lazarus parable, 00:41:59.98\00:42:01.35 the dogs came and licked the sore of Lazarus. 00:42:01.38\00:42:04.32 The dogs or the Gentiles were 00:42:04.35\00:42:05.75 more concerned with the needs of the people 00:42:05.79\00:42:07.46 than the Jews who boasted about their Hebrew background. 00:42:07.49\00:42:11.73 Second thing I found in Luke 19:10, 00:42:11.76\00:42:15.66 Jonah put the reputation, 00:42:15.70\00:42:17.23 his reputation above God's desire. 00:42:17.27\00:42:20.04 Jonah put his reputation above God's desire. 00:42:20.07\00:42:23.34 Luke 19-10. 00:42:23.37\00:42:25.47 Luke 19-10. 00:42:25.51\00:42:26.84 Jill, do you have that? I do. 00:42:26.88\00:42:28.21 "For the Son of man has come to seek 00:42:28.24\00:42:29.94 and to save that which was lost." 00:42:29.98\00:42:32.21 Isn't it amazing? Yeah. 00:42:32.25\00:42:33.98 Salvation is not exclusive 00:42:34.02\00:42:36.05 to any specific body of individuals. 00:42:36.08\00:42:38.85 God wants to save any, anyone, 00:42:38.89\00:42:41.06 for the Son of man has come to seek 00:42:41.09\00:42:42.62 and to save that which was lost. 00:42:42.66\00:42:44.13 When we lived in California, 00:42:44.16\00:42:45.49 my wife and I taught that verse to our niece. 00:42:45.53\00:42:47.60 And this was like 30 plus years ago, 00:42:47.63\00:42:49.60 to this day, when we call her in New York, 00:42:49.63\00:42:52.67 we say what's Luke 19:10? 00:42:52.70\00:42:54.64 She repeats it to us. 00:42:54.67\00:42:56.24 When you understand the mission of God, 00:42:56.27\00:43:00.14 He is concerned about the salvation of all. 00:43:00.18\00:43:02.21 If you're lost, He's concerned about your salvation. 00:43:02.24\00:43:05.88 And the next one, 00:43:05.91\00:43:08.35 Jonah was more concerned 00:43:08.38\00:43:09.92 about a plant than a soul. 00:43:09.95\00:43:15.49 That's serious. 00:43:15.52\00:43:16.99 God's mission was not to take away the sins of the plant, 00:43:17.03\00:43:22.53 but to take away the sins of humanity. 00:43:22.56\00:43:24.70 That's right. Jonah 1:20... 00:43:24.73\00:43:26.20 John 1:29, "The next day, 00:43:26.23\00:43:30.04 John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 00:43:30.07\00:43:33.17 'Behold, the Lamb of God, 00:43:33.21\00:43:36.68 who takes away the sin of the world." 00:43:36.71\00:43:40.75 And you know, when you think about it, 00:43:40.78\00:43:42.12 the last thing I want to bring out, 00:43:42.15\00:43:43.55 is the message of the cross 00:43:43.59\00:43:45.42 is not the message of condemnation of sinners, 00:43:45.45\00:43:48.49 but condemnation of sin. 00:43:48.52\00:43:51.26 So when I preach, I preach condemnation of sin, 00:43:51.29\00:43:55.93 but I preach redemption and salvation of the sinner. 00:43:55.96\00:44:01.10 You should never leave church feeling condemned. 00:44:01.14\00:44:04.71 You should leave church feeling empowered. 00:44:04.74\00:44:07.81 The minister must point out the sin, 00:44:07.84\00:44:10.91 but he must point the sinner to the Savior. 00:44:10.95\00:44:13.62 That's why I love John, 1 John 3:8. 00:44:13.65\00:44:16.89 What was the mission of Jesus? 00:44:16.92\00:44:19.52 He who sins is of the devil, 00:44:19.55\00:44:22.32 for the devil has sinned from the beginning. 00:44:22.36\00:44:24.79 For this purpose, the Son of God was manifest, 00:44:24.83\00:44:29.60 that He might destroy the works of the devil." 00:44:29.63\00:44:32.33 In Hebrews 2:14-15, 00:44:32.37\00:44:35.04 "Inasmuch then as the children 00:44:35.07\00:44:36.71 have partaken of flesh and blood, 00:44:36.74\00:44:38.61 He Himself likewise shared in the same, 00:44:38.64\00:44:40.98 that through death He might destroy him 00:44:41.01\00:44:42.91 who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 00:44:42.94\00:44:45.18 and release those who through fear of death 00:44:45.21\00:44:47.95 were all their lifetime subject to bondage." 00:44:47.98\00:44:52.12 God is still a deliverer. 00:44:52.15\00:44:54.36 Amen. Amen. 00:44:54.39\00:44:56.93 Thursday is A Two-Way Street. 00:44:56.96\00:45:01.40 Nineveh was the capital city of the Assyrians. 00:45:01.43\00:45:05.63 And I'll tell you what? 00:45:05.67\00:45:07.00 In Jonah's day, the Assyrians, their cruelty was legendary. 00:45:07.04\00:45:12.51 They knew, I mean, 00:45:12.54\00:45:14.08 Jonah knew how cruel they were to their captives. 00:45:14.11\00:45:17.68 These were warlike pagans. 00:45:17.71\00:45:19.81 And you know what? 00:45:19.85\00:45:21.18 He just figured the Assyrians deserve God's judgment. 00:45:21.22\00:45:25.72 It would be a win for Israel, if God would destroy them. 00:45:25.75\00:45:30.49 So he didn't like the Ninevites. 00:45:30.53\00:45:32.73 He even hated the Ninevites. 00:45:32.76\00:45:36.93 And when he preached his one word, 00:45:36.97\00:45:39.73 or one sentence sermon, 00:45:39.77\00:45:42.14 and people repented, man, he was angry. 00:45:42.17\00:45:47.48 And you know, I'm gonna say something, 00:45:47.51\00:45:49.04 I remember once there was someone, 00:45:49.08\00:45:50.95 I've only known hatred once in my life. 00:45:50.98\00:45:53.92 And I thought this was 40 years ago. 00:45:53.95\00:45:58.05 But the bottom line is God told me that 00:45:58.09\00:46:00.62 I needed to forgive this person. 00:46:00.66\00:46:03.49 And that, like, I don't know how to, Lord. 00:46:03.53\00:46:06.49 And He said, "Pray for salvation." 00:46:06.53\00:46:07.86 And I'm saying, 00:46:07.90\00:46:09.23 "I don't want him to be saved, Lord. 00:46:09.26\00:46:11.33 I was ready to let him rot. 00:46:11.37\00:46:13.23 You know where? 00:46:13.27\00:46:14.60 So, what happened, though, as I prayed for him, 00:46:14.64\00:46:20.04 God put forgiveness in my heart. 00:46:20.08\00:46:22.88 But listen to what Jonah says in Jonah 4:2-3. 00:46:22.91\00:46:27.18 He prayed to the Lord, 00:46:27.22\00:46:28.75 because when all he's running around 00:46:28.78\00:46:31.95 and saying, hey, you're gonna be 00:46:31.99\00:46:33.49 overthrown in 40 days, 00:46:33.52\00:46:35.36 and all of a sudden, there's this huge repentance, 00:46:35.39\00:46:38.39 and he's mad. 00:46:38.43\00:46:40.00 And in Jonah 4:2-3, he says, "He prayed to the Lord, 00:46:40.03\00:46:43.77 and he said, 'Our Lord, 00:46:43.80\00:46:46.50 was not this what I said 00:46:46.53\00:46:49.97 when I was still in my country. 00:46:50.01\00:46:52.61 Therefore, I fled to Tarshish." 00:46:52.64\00:46:55.01 He shown us why. 00:46:55.04\00:46:56.54 "I knew that you were a gracious 00:46:56.58\00:46:58.95 and merciful God, slow to anger 00:46:58.98\00:47:01.35 and abundant love, loving kindness, 00:47:01.38\00:47:04.09 one who relents from doing harm." 00:47:04.12\00:47:07.19 He's saying, God, 00:47:07.22\00:47:08.56 I knew you were gonna forgive them. 00:47:08.59\00:47:09.99 Hey, I've received pardon and grace, 00:47:10.03\00:47:11.93 but I didn't want them to. 00:47:11.96\00:47:13.76 That's why I didn't want to go. 00:47:13.80\00:47:15.80 Mercy. 00:47:15.83\00:47:17.17 And then he says, "Therefore now, oh Lord, 00:47:17.20\00:47:20.34 oh, please take my life for me. 00:47:20.37\00:47:22.74 For it is better for me to die than to live. 00:47:22.77\00:47:26.64 How melodramatic can you get? 00:47:26.68\00:47:29.21 But the truth comes out that 00:47:29.24\00:47:31.68 Jonah didn't want his enemies to be saved. 00:47:31.71\00:47:36.18 He's the weak link. 00:47:36.22\00:47:38.95 There he has in this story, 00:47:38.99\00:47:41.32 Jonah has no love for lost souls. 00:47:41.36\00:47:44.69 Just think. Yeah. 00:47:44.73\00:47:46.13 Who do you think is your most despised enemy? 00:47:46.16\00:47:51.03 What country? Where would it be? 00:47:51.07\00:47:53.90 What if God were to say, 00:47:53.94\00:47:56.67 you go take this American airline flight 00:47:56.71\00:47:59.67 to go to this country, 00:47:59.71\00:48:01.04 I'm going to put you in the midst of this 00:48:01.08\00:48:03.68 warlike cruel people to do this. 00:48:03.71\00:48:07.88 I'm telling you, it's, you know, but here's the point. 00:48:07.92\00:48:12.82 God knew that Jonah needed this missionary trip 00:48:12.85\00:48:17.73 as much as Nineveh did. 00:48:17.76\00:48:20.66 So He called, He forgave the Assyrians, God, 00:48:20.70\00:48:26.80 he repented of what he was going to do. 00:48:26.84\00:48:30.07 He relented, in other words, but He also, 00:48:30.11\00:48:35.54 He called them in love, but He called Jonah in love. 00:48:35.58\00:48:38.71 Now, we're told in the quarterly that 00:48:38.75\00:48:44.02 we're supposed to read the Book of Jude, 00:48:44.05\00:48:46.86 and talk about keeping ourselves 00:48:46.89\00:48:48.89 in the love of God. 00:48:48.92\00:48:50.66 Well, there's only 25 verses in Jude, 00:48:50.69\00:48:53.13 but we don't have time for them all. 00:48:53.16\00:48:54.63 So let's just go straight to this point. 00:48:54.66\00:48:56.87 And rather than just build 00:48:56.90\00:48:59.80 or keeping ourselves in the love of God, 00:48:59.83\00:49:02.04 I want to quickly delineate four things. 00:49:02.07\00:49:05.74 Jude 1 and Jude's right over there 00:49:05.77\00:49:09.04 before Revelation, right 00:49:09.08\00:49:10.58 toward the back of the book. 00:49:10.61\00:49:12.85 Jude, there's only one chapter, but beginning with verse 20. 00:49:12.88\00:49:18.25 "But you beloved, building yourself up 00:49:18.29\00:49:20.89 on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. 00:49:20.92\00:49:25.03 Keep yourselves in the love of God, 00:49:25.06\00:49:28.70 looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ 00:49:28.73\00:49:31.73 into eternal life. 00:49:31.77\00:49:33.34 And on some having, 00:49:33.37\00:49:35.50 having have on some have compassion, 00:49:35.54\00:49:39.67 making a distinction, 00:49:39.71\00:49:41.91 but others saved with fear pulling them 00:49:41.94\00:49:43.78 out of the fire, 00:49:43.81\00:49:45.15 hating even the garment defiled by the flesh." 00:49:45.18\00:49:49.25 I want to focus on four words there, 00:49:49.28\00:49:54.19 build, keep, look 00:49:54.22\00:49:58.86 and be compassionate. 00:49:58.89\00:50:00.30 Well. Good. 00:50:00.33\00:50:01.66 So build yourselves up on your most holy faith. 00:50:01.70\00:50:07.24 What in the context what Jude is writing is we need to... 00:50:07.27\00:50:12.11 He was telling people build up yourself in the faith 00:50:12.14\00:50:16.38 as a defense against false teachers 00:50:16.41\00:50:19.91 who were trying to tear down the faith. 00:50:19.95\00:50:23.18 They were working hard those false teachers. 00:50:23.22\00:50:26.65 And so what he's basically telling them 00:50:26.69\00:50:28.92 is to keep yourselves by growing in the grace, 00:50:28.96\00:50:33.80 in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:50:33.83\00:50:37.07 I'm going to tell you that today, 00:50:37.10\00:50:38.67 build yourself up in your most holy faith. 00:50:38.70\00:50:41.90 There are people who are trying to tear down 00:50:41.94\00:50:45.81 the faith of Christ. 00:50:45.84\00:50:47.84 In Acts 20:32, it gives us an idea 00:50:47.88\00:50:52.91 how we can build up. 00:50:52.95\00:50:55.45 He says, "Now, brethren, I commend you to the Lord, 00:50:55.48\00:50:58.49 and to the word of His grace, 00:50:58.52\00:51:01.99 which is able to build you up 00:51:02.02\00:51:04.79 and give you an inheritance 00:51:04.83\00:51:06.33 among all those who are sanctified." 00:51:06.36\00:51:10.17 So we got to study the Word. 00:51:10.20\00:51:12.40 You cannot, you don't know 00:51:12.43\00:51:14.30 what error is if you don't know what the truth is. 00:51:14.34\00:51:17.17 So you've got to study the Word, 00:51:17.21\00:51:19.14 build yourself up by knowing the scriptures. 00:51:19.17\00:51:21.81 But then he said, 00:51:21.84\00:51:23.18 "Keep yourselves in the love of God." 00:51:23.21\00:51:27.32 I'm going to tell you something. 00:51:27.35\00:51:28.92 I believe that we've got to keep ourselves 00:51:28.95\00:51:31.69 within God's love boundaries. 00:51:31.72\00:51:35.02 And that's what the Ten Commandments is. 00:51:35.06\00:51:37.86 The Ten Commandments, and I say is rather than are 00:51:37.89\00:51:42.30 because it is a single unit. 00:51:42.33\00:51:45.77 But the Ten Commandments describe 00:51:45.80\00:51:51.04 God's boundaries of love. 00:51:51.07\00:51:53.41 This is His law of love, His law of liberty, 00:51:53.44\00:51:57.81 you've got to keep yourself 00:51:57.85\00:52:00.32 within God's boundaries of love. 00:52:00.35\00:52:02.85 And don't let Satan drag you away to do 00:52:02.88\00:52:07.86 what God doesn't want you to do. 00:52:07.89\00:52:09.89 You've got to be obedient to His will 00:52:09.92\00:52:12.13 but know that even obedience is by grace 00:52:12.16\00:52:14.80 because it is God. 00:52:14.83\00:52:17.33 Philippians 2:13 says, 00:52:17.37\00:52:19.13 "It is God who works in you 00:52:19.17\00:52:21.37 to will and to do His good pleasure." 00:52:21.40\00:52:24.77 But we've also got to pray 00:52:24.81\00:52:28.81 if we're going to build ourselves up. 00:52:28.84\00:52:30.85 It's or keep ourselves 00:52:30.88\00:52:32.91 in His faith, in His love. 00:52:32.95\00:52:38.02 You've got to pray for the Holy Spirit. 00:52:38.05\00:52:41.52 And I mean, you know what? 00:52:41.56\00:52:43.79 We can't even really pray in the right direction 00:52:43.83\00:52:47.26 without praying with the Holy Spirit's power. 00:52:47.30\00:52:50.43 Romans 8:26 says, "The spirit also helps in our weaknesses." 00:52:50.47\00:52:55.34 We don't know how we should pray. 00:52:55.37\00:52:57.74 "But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us." 00:52:57.77\00:53:00.91 And you know, this is what I believe is so powerful about. 00:53:00.94\00:53:03.85 I wanna brag on my husband. 00:53:03.88\00:53:06.05 When he first came to 3ABN, he was concerned, 00:53:06.08\00:53:10.62 he couldn't explain the 2300 days. 00:53:10.65\00:53:13.96 And he prayed, he said, 00:53:13.99\00:53:15.32 oh, Lord, please don't let anybody 00:53:15.36\00:53:16.69 call me in pastoral to do that. 00:53:16.73\00:53:18.19 And you know what? 00:53:18.23\00:53:19.59 He got every call except that, 00:53:19.63\00:53:21.90 but he knew not to rely on himself. 00:53:21.93\00:53:25.23 He relied on the Lord that he would always ask and say, 00:53:25.27\00:53:29.10 do you mind if we let, 00:53:29.14\00:53:30.97 invite the Holy Spirit to pray with us. 00:53:31.01\00:53:33.44 And that man is a prayer warrior. 00:53:33.48\00:53:34.94 All right. 00:53:34.98\00:53:36.31 But number three 00:53:36.34\00:53:37.95 is we've got to show compassion. 00:53:37.98\00:53:41.08 We contend for the faith by showing mercy 00:53:41.12\00:53:44.15 and compassion to the wavering, 00:53:44.19\00:53:46.35 show mercy to others, reach out and be mercy. 00:53:46.39\00:53:49.72 Some sincere doubters 00:53:49.76\00:53:51.49 may not have reached a conclusion, 00:53:51.53\00:53:55.30 and they deserve our compassion. 00:53:55.33\00:53:57.73 It may be still possible to convince them of the truth. 00:53:57.77\00:54:00.44 But then there's those who embrace errors 00:54:00.47\00:54:03.47 that are from the false teachers, 00:54:03.51\00:54:04.84 we got to snatch them and pull them out. 00:54:04.87\00:54:07.68 And even those apostates who are teaching wrong, 00:54:07.71\00:54:10.55 we ought to be praying for them, 00:54:10.58\00:54:11.91 just don't get close enough that 00:54:11.95\00:54:13.28 they can contaminate you. 00:54:13.31\00:54:14.65 But let's look at the last one. 00:54:14.68\00:54:17.29 There is the looking for the mercy in the Lord, 00:54:17.32\00:54:21.42 looking for, 00:54:21.46\00:54:22.79 anticipating the blessed hope of His glorious appearing. 00:54:22.82\00:54:28.80 Did you know that that is a purifying act? 00:54:28.83\00:54:33.03 1 John 3:3 says, "Everyone who has this hope 00:54:33.07\00:54:36.57 is watching for the return of Jesus Christ, 00:54:36.60\00:54:39.67 in Him purifies himself just as He is pure. 00:54:39.71\00:54:45.48 So what we've got to do is build up ourselves 00:54:45.51\00:54:49.32 in the most holy faith. 00:54:49.35\00:54:51.02 By studying we've got to keep ourselves 00:54:51.05\00:54:54.39 in God's love boundaries. 00:54:54.42\00:54:56.83 We've got to pray with the Holy Spirit, 00:54:56.86\00:54:59.89 contend for the faith by witnessing to others, 00:54:59.93\00:55:03.67 but looking for the appearance of Jesus Christ 00:55:03.70\00:55:07.40 and then we'll be pure as He is pure. 00:55:07.44\00:55:09.54 Amen.
