Jesus is our high priest
in the heavenly sanctuary.

Now Sunday's lesson

In 1 Corinthians

Paul says, "Do you not know

that those who
run in a race all run,

but one receives the prize?"

Then he says,

"Run in such a way
that you may obtain it.

And everyone who
competes for the prize

is temperate in all things.

Now they do it,"

they're temperate,

He ran in a serious way,

He wanted to obtain the prize.

transitions to illustrate

how the lack of self-discipline

can lead to disqualification
for God's covenant people.

clearly says in several places,

God says that He keeps covenant

with those who
keep covenant with Him.

So let's look at
1 Corinthians 10:1.

Considering these
things that you need to run,

run to obtain the prize.

Christ's presence,

He was the angel of the covenant

I believe this
word baptized here

is used in a metaphorical sense.

They didn't get wet
going through the sea.

But the people were
immersed in Moses' authority

and his divine leadership.

It indicates
oneness, solidarity,

with Moses as their leader.

And, you know, in Romans
6:3, it says, "Do you not know

that as many of us as
were baptized into Christ Jesus

were baptized into His death?"

See, this is a symbolic
thing, being baptized in Christ
00:08:14.12\00:08:17.49
means we were supposed to
take the same cup, die to self.
00:08:17.53\00:08:22.73
And He says in Galatians 3:27,

"As many as you who
were baptized into Christ,
00:08:25.57\00:08:29.84
you've put on Christ."

We recognize Christ's authority.

We are supposed to
become one with Him.

When we're united with Christ,

we place our saving faith
in Him and there's a miracle

of a spiritual
union with Christ,

when we're thinking

Positionally, we

And it depicts this
reality of what has happened,

that we've died to self,
we're buried with Christ,

and we come up
to live in newness.

But now listen to what He
says in 1 Corinthians 10:3,

all, he was talking
to those Hebrew children

who came out in the Exodus,
00:09:51.09\00:09:52.85
"All ate this
same spiritual food."
00:09:52.89\00:09:56.76
The giving of the manna
00:09:56.79\00:09:59.83
was provided as by the
spiritual power of God,

we could say.
00:10:04.03\00:10:05.37
Spiritual food, there was
no other food for them to eat,

they were dependent

upon what God
gave them directly.

And manna fell from heaven

sufficient for each day's need.

The only time that
there was something different

We don't have to
guess what he's saying,

because Paul says,
"That Rock was Christ."

God first instructed
Moses to strike the rock,

and the water
came forth after that,

it was only to be
struck once, right?

After that he was
supposed to speak to the rock.

And the rock is what...

You know, there
is a Jewish legend

that the actual rock
followed them in the desert,

but we know who that rock is.

It was the pre-incarnate Christ,

who never left
them or forsake them.

All of God's dealings
with His covenant children

and fallen humanity
have been through Christ.

So He is the living water
that will quench our thirst.

I love what Jesus
said in John 7:37-39,

John 7:37 begins,

and Jesus, it says, "On
the last day of the feast,"

"Jesus stirred and
He cried out, saying,

'If anyone thirst, let
him come to Me and drink.

He who believes Me,
as the Scripture has said

out of his heart will
flow rivers of living water.'"

What is He referring to?

Well, he describes it.

Paul explains in verse 39,
"But this He spoke concerning,"

in Him would receive,

that's an understatement.

New Testament concealed,

Old Testament reveals.

So when you understand
the sacrificial system,

than the life in
the ministry of Jesus,

there's a bright
light turned on halogen,

all of a sudden, everything
about the life of Jesus

becomes, as the
shepherds found out,

when they were keeping

We see that very
clearly in Hebrews 4.

So what is this rest?

rest encompasses two things.

assurance of salvation,

that it encompasses the rest

that you and I
find in the Sabbath,

We see the
correlation between the two.

The Sabbath rest
really expresses our faith

in two ways.

It testifies that
we have received grace,

it testifies that we
have received God's goodness

and His salvation.

It also demonstrates
that we are waiting eagerly

for the
consummation of these gifts

at the second coming of Christ.

The Sabbath is a
weekly visible sign

that God's the
one who sanctifies us,

that He's the
one who redeemed us,

that He's the one who
will recreate us in His image.

You know, if you
look at the history,

and Paul had talked about
the history of the Israelites,

you see that
they were in bondage.

They were freed
from slavery in Egypt,

but they were never really
freed from slavery to sin.

You see, they never
understood salvation

by grace through faith.

I'm sure there were
pockets that understood
00:30:53.45\00:30:55.85
that I'm not saying that.
00:30:55.88\00:30:57.39
But by and large, as
a people, as a movement,
00:30:57.42\00:31:01.26
they did not understand that.
00:31:01.29\00:31:03.06
Remember, when the law
was given at Mount Sinai,
00:31:03.09\00:31:04.99
what did they say?
00:31:05.03\00:31:06.36
Oh, that the Lord
has said, we will do.

They thought they could
somehow earn God's favor.
00:31:10.30\00:31:13.17
They could somehow
obey in their own strength.

And yet it was only by
grace that they could do that.

We also see that
Israel, as a nation,

did not enter truly into
the Sabbath rest, either.

We see that they were lacks
in their Sabbath observance,

the history of Israel.

And then we see, I
think Ryan referenced this

observance of the Sabbath.

concept of grace and assurance

seems too good to be true."

earth, things do not last.

there's a great controversy
between good and evil.

We may enjoy peace here,
