Amen. 00:03:23.43\00:03:25.20 You know, as we began, 00:03:25.23\00:03:26.57 we look at our memory text for today in Psalm 84:2. 00:03:26.60\00:03:30.67 The psalmist write, 00:03:30.71\00:03:32.04 "My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth 00:03:32.07\00:03:36.34 for the courts of the Lord: 00:03:36.38\00:03:38.58 my heart and my flesh crieth out 00:03:38.61\00:03:41.48 for the living God." 00:03:41.52\00:03:43.02 Sounds like a person who's experiencing anxiety, 00:03:43.05\00:03:45.95 but know that he needs something 00:03:45.99\00:03:48.29 other than what he already has. 00:03:48.32\00:03:50.16 And I'm sure you've heard the phrase, 00:03:50.19\00:03:51.93 time waits for no one. 00:03:51.96\00:03:53.70 We're going to talk about that today, 00:03:53.73\00:03:55.06 because we live in a 24/7 society. 00:03:55.10\00:03:57.67 We live in a digital world, wrapped in a 5G environment 00:03:57.70\00:04:01.27 making nanosecond decisions. 00:04:01.30\00:04:03.30 And we think about all the things coming at us 00:04:03.34\00:04:05.44 from different directions, the young and the old. 00:04:05.47\00:04:07.81 There are those that are sick, those that are tired. 00:04:07.84\00:04:10.65 There are those that are sick and tired. 00:04:10.68\00:04:12.98 And there are those that are running on empty 00:04:13.01\00:04:14.98 as the lesson is going to be as we're going to see today. 00:04:15.02\00:04:17.85 And there are those who have households 00:04:17.89\00:04:21.12 that are always on edge 00:04:21.16\00:04:23.12 that comes into a vortex of activity. 00:04:23.16\00:04:26.33 Mom is not able to rest from the children 00:04:26.36\00:04:28.46 that are pulling at her from different directions. 00:04:28.50\00:04:30.63 And I think about sometimes how we face the Sabbath, 00:04:30.67\00:04:32.80 we're just sliding into Sabbath preparation. 00:04:32.83\00:04:35.87 And the sun is just setting and we're just turning off 00:04:35.90\00:04:39.64 the very last thing that we need to get rid of 00:04:39.67\00:04:42.01 before the Sabbath starts. 00:04:42.04\00:04:43.38 So we're gonna talk about 00:04:43.41\00:04:44.75 how needed it is for us to rest in a world like today. 00:04:44.78\00:04:49.08 We don't only have email, we have texting nowadays, 00:04:49.12\00:04:51.45 and that's something you can't shut down. 00:04:51.49\00:04:53.82 Who came up with the idea of texting? 00:04:53.86\00:04:55.79 They ought to be arrested. 00:04:55.82\00:04:57.53 We ought to have a chance to rest. 00:04:57.56\00:04:59.73 There was a time that when you get in your car, 00:04:59.76\00:05:02.06 and you are driving away from the phone, 00:05:02.10\00:05:03.73 you can actually rest until you get to the house 00:05:03.77\00:05:05.87 where the phone is. 00:05:05.90\00:05:07.47 Somebody found out how to make the phone portable, 00:05:07.50\00:05:09.84 and we have less rest. 00:05:09.87\00:05:11.37 And people are impatient. 00:05:11.41\00:05:12.84 They text you, and they text you 00:05:12.87\00:05:14.38 a second later, did you not get my text, 00:05:14.41\00:05:17.85 while you're answering someone else's text. 00:05:17.88\00:05:20.05 Boy, do we need rest. 00:05:20.08\00:05:22.78 Amen. 00:05:22.82\00:05:24.15 I like to lead in the question 00:05:24.19\00:05:25.52 as the Sabbath School writers pointed out, 00:05:25.55\00:05:26.89 why would God create a day of rest before man ever sinned? 00:05:26.92\00:05:32.16 You know, the answer simply is 00:05:32.19\00:05:33.56 God is a forward-looking God. 00:05:33.60\00:05:36.23 He knew how He created His beings. 00:05:36.26\00:05:38.77 It's like saying, why create a gas station 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.84 before you build the next car. 00:05:40.87\00:05:42.64 Because we knew that 00:05:42.67\00:05:44.01 that car is going to need fuel to continue to go on. 00:05:44.04\00:05:45.84 Why create all these extra parts 00:05:45.87\00:05:47.78 before the car even breaks down? 00:05:47.81\00:05:50.08 Because the manufacturer knows what the car's limitations are. 00:05:50.11\00:05:53.72 And when God made us, God knew our limitations. 00:05:53.75\00:05:56.42 So this entire quarter, we're going to talk about 00:05:56.45\00:05:58.25 the limitations that God sees on us. 00:05:58.29\00:06:01.22 The limitations that God knows 00:06:01.26\00:06:03.06 has been imposed on us because of sin. 00:06:03.09\00:06:05.76 And I'm going to dive into the lesson called 00:06:05.79\00:06:07.26 Worn and Weary, which is Sunday's lesson. 00:06:07.30\00:06:10.13 Turn to Sunday with us. 00:06:10.17\00:06:11.90 And let's look at our text in Genesis Chapter 2. 00:06:11.93\00:06:15.40 We're going to point out the beauty of God knowing 00:06:15.44\00:06:19.11 what His creation would need, 00:06:19.14\00:06:21.51 and how God always moves ahead of humanity. 00:06:21.54\00:06:24.45 I'm so thankful that God doesn't say, 00:06:24.48\00:06:26.41 well, you know what? 00:06:26.45\00:06:27.78 I think I need to create holidays 00:06:27.82\00:06:29.15 because they need a vacation. 00:06:29.18\00:06:31.62 God saw everything that He knew we would need. 00:06:31.65\00:06:35.52 And He included that in creation. 00:06:35.56\00:06:38.49 Genesis 2:1-3, on the lesson Worn and Weary. 00:06:38.53\00:06:44.27 We read in Genesis 2:1, 00:06:44.30\00:06:46.27 "Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, 00:06:46.30\00:06:49.90 and all the host of them. 00:06:49.94\00:06:52.87 And on the seventh day God ended His work 00:06:52.91\00:06:56.14 which He had made, 00:06:56.18\00:06:57.65 and He rested on the seventh day 00:06:57.68\00:07:00.05 from all His work which He had made." 00:07:00.08\00:07:03.08 Look at that, God rested. 00:07:03.12\00:07:04.95 Yeah. Amen. 00:07:04.99\00:07:06.32 We know that 00:07:06.35\00:07:07.69 he who keeps Israel neither sleeps nor slumbers. 00:07:07.72\00:07:10.26 So there has to be something deeper to this 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.69 than just God saying, 00:07:12.73\00:07:14.06 I'm just so tired, how many galaxies it is, 00:07:14.10\00:07:17.17 I need a break. 00:07:18.83\00:07:20.37 No, God is not one who gets exhausted. 00:07:20.40\00:07:24.34 So there has to be a deeper reason 00:07:24.37\00:07:25.84 why God rested. 00:07:25.87\00:07:27.31 And then we read what else He did in verse 3. 00:07:27.34\00:07:29.74 "And God blessed the seventh day, 00:07:29.78\00:07:32.21 and sanctified it: 00:07:32.25\00:07:34.28 because that in it 00:07:34.32\00:07:35.65 He had rested from all His work 00:07:35.68\00:07:37.89 which God created and made." 00:07:37.92\00:07:40.92 So, Jill, I'm gonna bring out five points, 00:07:40.96\00:07:43.69 gonna kind of beat you to the point today. 00:07:43.73\00:07:45.86 Five things that we could find can be a benefit 00:07:45.89\00:07:47.93 why God allowed rest to be a part of our diet. 00:07:47.96\00:07:52.27 And let me just say this, 00:07:52.30\00:07:53.64 if you're not a person that takes time to rest, 00:07:53.67\00:07:56.24 you're going to wear out very quickly. 00:07:56.27\00:07:58.67 Rest is essential. 00:07:58.71\00:08:00.28 And rest is not something that we can put off 00:08:00.31\00:08:02.38 for many, many, many, many months down the road. 00:08:02.41\00:08:04.51 God has built into creation a weekly rest 00:08:04.55\00:08:07.85 for each one of us. 00:08:07.88\00:08:09.22 Don't take that weekly rest to work on something else. 00:08:09.25\00:08:12.29 Take that weekly rest, to spend time with the Lord, 00:08:12.32\00:08:14.86 shut the world down, close the books, 00:08:14.89\00:08:17.79 close the laptop, 00:08:17.83\00:08:19.43 put the iPad down, turn off social media, 00:08:19.46\00:08:22.76 and find a refreshing time in the presence of God. 00:08:22.80\00:08:25.90 So here's the question, 00:08:25.93\00:08:27.27 why did God create a rest day before anyone was even tired? 00:08:27.30\00:08:30.61 Let's go to Mark 6:31. 00:08:30.64\00:08:33.68 The first point I want to make is God did not create man 00:08:33.71\00:08:36.64 for a perpetually busy life. 00:08:36.68\00:08:40.12 God did not create us for a perpetually busy life. 00:08:40.15\00:08:44.52 Mark 6:31. 00:08:44.55\00:08:47.99 Jesus speaking to His disciples. 00:08:48.02\00:08:50.73 "And He said to them, 00:08:50.76\00:08:52.83 'Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place 00:08:52.86\00:08:57.40 and rest a while.' 00:08:57.43\00:08:59.10 For there are many coming and going, 00:08:59.13\00:09:02.74 and they did not even have time to eat.'" 00:09:02.77\00:09:05.87 Sounds like you, Pastor Kenny. 00:09:05.91\00:09:07.71 You haven't eaten for a while, 00:09:07.74\00:09:09.31 taken a six day hiatus from food. 00:09:09.34\00:09:13.48 And how you feel? Yeah. 00:09:13.52\00:09:15.28 Good. Okay. 00:09:15.32\00:09:16.65 Actually feel good. Actually feel good. 00:09:16.69\00:09:18.02 Yeah. 00:09:18.05\00:09:19.39 And sometimes we do that, sometimes we take a, 00:09:19.42\00:09:21.19 what do we call that, a hiatus from... 00:09:21.22\00:09:22.72 What do they call that? 00:09:22.76\00:09:24.09 Fasting. Yeah. 00:09:24.13\00:09:25.46 And giving the organs in the body 00:09:25.49\00:09:27.96 a chance to rest digestively. 00:09:28.00\00:09:30.80 Got to be careful how you do that though. 00:09:30.83\00:09:33.70 But notice what the Lord said here. 00:09:33.74\00:09:35.57 He says, "Come aside and rest a while." 00:09:35.60\00:09:37.21 And when you study the life of Jesus. 00:09:37.24\00:09:38.77 In one instance, Jesus went to a secular city 00:09:38.81\00:09:42.54 to get away from religious people. 00:09:42.58\00:09:45.31 Now think about that. 00:09:45.35\00:09:46.68 You got to think about that. 00:09:46.72\00:09:48.05 He went to a secular city to get away 00:09:48.08\00:09:49.48 from religious people. 00:09:49.52\00:09:51.02 But when they heard that Jesus was going to be there, 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.29 and they Follow Him and met Him there. 00:09:54.32\00:09:57.06 The Lord is saying, 00:09:57.09\00:09:58.43 don't get locked in a perpetually busy cycle 00:09:58.46\00:10:01.86 and forget to eat. 00:10:01.90\00:10:03.57 Because the things that are going to come to you 00:10:03.60\00:10:05.63 are going to be more demanding 00:10:05.67\00:10:07.00 than you can ever handle unless you take time to rest. 00:10:07.04\00:10:09.74 Second one, Psalm 4:8, 00:10:09.77\00:10:12.54 God created us to have a time of rest 00:10:12.57\00:10:15.11 and refreshment. 00:10:15.14\00:10:16.54 Psalm 4:8, we read, "I will both lie down in peace 00:10:16.58\00:10:21.08 and sleep, for You alone, 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.89 O Lord, make me dwell in safety." 00:10:23.92\00:10:27.36 Yes. 00:10:27.39\00:10:28.72 Lie down in peace and sleep. 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.76 There's some people that lie down that can't sleep. 00:10:30.79\00:10:32.83 Has it ever happened to you? 00:10:32.86\00:10:34.66 You know, when you think and I learned as a young pastor 00:10:34.70\00:10:36.50 how to shut my mind off. 00:10:36.53\00:10:38.23 I was doing an evangelistic series. 00:10:38.27\00:10:39.67 And you know, I can't afford to lose 10 pounds, 00:10:39.70\00:10:41.24 but I lost 10 pounds. 00:10:41.27\00:10:42.87 Because all I was thinking about all the details 00:10:42.90\00:10:44.97 that I need to work on what the Bible says, 00:10:45.01\00:10:47.84 take no thought for tomorrow. 00:10:47.88\00:10:49.28 And I had to learn that. 00:10:49.31\00:10:51.01 So now when I go to bed at night, 00:10:51.05\00:10:52.38 I don't care what tomorrow is going to be. 00:10:52.41\00:10:54.42 I'll be out in five minutes. Yeah. 00:10:54.45\00:10:56.12 That's just how I've determined in my mind, 00:10:56.15\00:10:58.52 I'm going to lay down in peace and sleep. 00:10:58.55\00:11:02.19 The third point, Exodus 32:12, 00:11:02.22\00:11:05.69 God knew that in difficult times, 00:11:05.73\00:11:08.06 people would misunderstand Him. 00:11:08.10\00:11:10.70 You know, when you get exhausted, 00:11:10.73\00:11:12.10 it skews your understanding about Christ. 00:11:12.13\00:11:14.37 Look at Exodus 32:12. 00:11:14.40\00:11:15.90 Do you have that, Jill? 00:11:15.94\00:11:17.27 Exodus 32:12. Oh, I'm in Genesis 32:12. 00:11:17.31\00:11:20.41 I was thinking, where are you going with that? 00:11:20.44\00:11:22.31 Exactly. 00:11:22.34\00:11:23.68 Okay, Exodus 32:12, 00:11:23.71\00:11:26.01 "Why should the Egyptians speak, 00:11:26.05\00:11:27.62 and say, 'He brought them out to harm them, 00:11:27.65\00:11:29.92 to kill them in the mountains, 00:11:29.95\00:11:31.29 and to consume them from the face of the earth?' 00:11:31.32\00:11:33.52 Turn from Your fierce wrath, 00:11:33.56\00:11:35.16 and relent from this harm to Your people.'" 00:11:35.19\00:11:37.33 Okay, now, you might wonder what that's all about. 00:11:37.36\00:11:40.20 They were begging for rest from the bondage of Egypt. 00:11:40.23\00:11:43.47 That's right. 00:11:43.50\00:11:44.83 Now God freed them from the bondage of Egypt 00:11:44.87\00:11:47.54 to give them rest, and all of a sudden, 00:11:47.57\00:11:50.81 because of their recalcitrant behavior, 00:11:50.84\00:11:53.68 they began to be subject almost to the judgments of God. 00:11:53.71\00:11:58.31 But in this passage, if God had had poured on them 00:11:58.35\00:12:03.22 His judgments, the Egyptians would have said, 00:12:03.25\00:12:05.79 you know, we don't have anything to worry about. 00:12:05.82\00:12:07.46 God took care of them for us. 00:12:07.49\00:12:09.32 And so this is in essence saying, 00:12:09.36\00:12:10.93 turn from your fierce 00:12:10.96\00:12:12.29 wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people. 00:12:12.33\00:12:15.46 They were not telling God to stop. 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.30 But the intermediary Moses appealed to the Lord 00:12:17.33\00:12:22.60 to give his people a second chance. 00:12:22.64\00:12:26.07 And I think the Lord that sometimes we have people 00:12:26.11\00:12:28.18 that are intermediary, 00:12:28.21\00:12:29.71 they mediate for us to our Lord, 00:12:29.74\00:12:33.92 so that what God knows that we are worthy of, 00:12:33.95\00:12:37.79 what God knows that we deserve. 00:12:37.82\00:12:39.99 God doesn't change His mind because we manipulate Him. 00:12:40.02\00:12:43.36 But God is a God of mercy, who gives us a second chance. 00:12:43.39\00:12:45.99 Praise Him for that. 00:12:46.03\00:12:47.40 Two more points. 00:12:47.43\00:12:48.76 Deuteronomy 5:14, 00:12:48.80\00:12:50.30 God established a time 00:12:50.33\00:12:51.67 where all of creation can rest, where all of creation can rest. 00:12:51.70\00:12:56.54 And this, by the way, 00:12:56.57\00:12:57.91 is the second writing of the Ten Commandments. 00:12:57.94\00:13:00.88 This is to the generation that grew up 00:13:00.91\00:13:03.24 in the wilderness journey. 00:13:03.28\00:13:05.35 The children that came out of Egypt, 00:13:05.38\00:13:07.58 they didn't have a clue about what the Sabbath was. 00:13:07.62\00:13:09.32 But here's what the Bible says, as they are reminded. 00:13:09.35\00:13:11.89 Deuteronomy 5:14, 00:13:11.92\00:13:13.32 "But the seventh day 00:13:13.36\00:13:14.69 is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. 00:13:14.72\00:13:16.22 In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, 00:13:16.26\00:13:18.83 nor your daughter, nor your male servant, 00:13:18.86\00:13:20.63 nor your female servant, nor your ox, 00:13:20.66\00:13:22.56 nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, 00:13:22.60\00:13:24.97 nor your stranger who is within your gates, 00:13:25.00\00:13:27.80 that your male servant and your female servant 00:13:27.84\00:13:31.17 may rest as well as you." 00:13:31.21\00:13:34.64 Reason I don't go to restaurants on Sabbath, 00:13:34.68\00:13:37.28 because they deserve rest too. 00:13:37.31\00:13:38.68 And by giving them rest, and they say, 00:13:38.71\00:13:41.35 "Well, I haven't seen you this Big Bowl? 00:13:41.38\00:13:42.72 I don't do this. 00:13:42.75\00:13:44.09 You need to take a day of rest as I do. 00:13:44.12\00:13:45.69 And finally, God established a time 00:13:45.72\00:13:47.89 where all of creation can find solace in Him. 00:13:47.92\00:13:51.63 This is an appeal to you. 00:13:51.66\00:13:54.36 Matthew 11:28, "Come to Me, all you who labor 00:13:54.40\00:13:58.67 and are heavy laden," together, "and I will give you rest." 00:13:58.70\00:14:03.57 So if you are worn and weary, 00:14:03.61\00:14:06.37 this is a good time to plan rest in your calendar 00:14:06.41\00:14:09.08 because God did not create you to be perpetually busy. 00:14:09.11\00:14:12.85 Pastor Kenny? 00:14:12.88\00:14:14.82 Beautiful. Thank you very much said. 00:14:14.85\00:14:16.25 A good foundation, 00:14:16.28\00:14:17.62 always appreciate a good foundation 00:14:17.65\00:14:18.99 and building construction for years that's important, 00:14:19.02\00:14:21.26 and in the Word of God even more important. 00:14:21.29\00:14:23.16 We're going to be talking about Monday's lesson, 00:14:23.19\00:14:24.59 Running on Empty. 00:14:24.63\00:14:25.96 And I think this probably was especially maybe for me 00:14:25.99\00:14:28.70 and I hope each one of you think 00:14:28.73\00:14:30.07 kind of the same thing. 00:14:30.10\00:14:31.43 There's something we can glean out of this 00:14:31.47\00:14:33.17 when you run on empty. 00:14:33.20\00:14:34.54 I always said myself, what good am I? 00:14:34.57\00:14:37.14 What good am I to myself? 00:14:37.17\00:14:38.54 What good am I to God, to my fellow man, 00:14:38.57\00:14:41.44 when I'm on empty. 00:14:41.48\00:14:42.81 And, you know, Jeremiah describe, 00:14:42.84\00:14:45.18 I think was Baruch received a message from God 00:14:45.21\00:14:48.42 and this really come out in the lesson real strong. 00:14:48.45\00:14:50.32 I think some we need to really consider, 00:14:50.35\00:14:52.25 all that was going on, 00:14:52.29\00:14:53.62 all that was soon to happen the city's destruction, 00:14:53.66\00:14:56.29 you know, by the Babylonians 00:14:56.32\00:14:58.23 that the exile, the loss, 00:14:58.26\00:15:00.46 everything that was getting ready to happen. 00:15:00.50\00:15:02.66 And I think at this point in time Jeremiah 00:15:02.70\00:15:04.43 was in jail, prison. 00:15:04.47\00:15:06.43 And so, you know, 00:15:06.47\00:15:08.64 his scribe really couldn't get to talk to him 00:15:08.67\00:15:11.14 the way he wanted to. 00:15:11.17\00:15:12.51 So all this stuff was laid upon him. 00:15:12.54\00:15:14.64 And so he became discouraged. 00:15:14.68\00:15:17.15 He became despondent. 00:15:17.18\00:15:18.65 He became to the point to 00:15:18.68\00:15:20.22 where he just didn't know what he was going to do. 00:15:20.25\00:15:22.45 And, you know, this guy was maybe 00:15:22.48\00:15:24.29 like many of us today, 00:15:24.32\00:15:25.65 he was in a situation to where he, 00:15:25.69\00:15:28.09 he loved to work for others, he loved to work for God. 00:15:28.12\00:15:31.49 But he had aspirations. 00:15:31.53\00:15:33.29 He had some aspiration of doing more than 00:15:33.33\00:15:35.03 what he was doing at that point in time. 00:15:35.06\00:15:36.40 And so he wanted to see that happen. 00:15:36.43\00:15:37.77 And now that with 00:15:37.80\00:15:39.13 what was happening in the country, 00:15:39.17\00:15:40.50 where he's at, he's saying that 00:15:40.54\00:15:41.87 there's no way that I can expand the way, 00:15:41.90\00:15:43.24 I can grow in a way, I can continue on, 00:15:43.27\00:15:44.81 the uncertainty of the world that we live in. 00:15:44.84\00:15:48.08 I look at that today and some of the aspirations 00:15:48.11\00:15:50.11 that some people have, 00:15:50.15\00:15:51.48 that young people have and older people have, 00:15:51.51\00:15:53.11 you're wondering, 00:15:53.15\00:15:54.48 will these things ever play out? 00:15:54.52\00:15:56.02 And sometimes it can cause a little depression, 00:15:56.05\00:15:58.39 little anxiety, and sometimes 00:15:58.42\00:16:00.32 we lose our hold on Christ. 00:16:00.36\00:16:02.42 And I've said some time, and I've heard people say, 00:16:02.46\00:16:05.33 I'll tell you, I'm just drained. 00:16:05.36\00:16:07.10 Have you heard that? I'm just drained. 00:16:07.13\00:16:08.46 Right. 00:16:08.50\00:16:09.83 And sometimes I feel like I'm just drained. 00:16:09.86\00:16:11.33 And I don't know 00:16:11.37\00:16:12.70 if it's wrong to really say that or not, 00:16:12.73\00:16:14.14 I don't think we should get to that point. 00:16:14.17\00:16:16.10 Because just Pastor John laid the foundation, 00:16:16.14\00:16:18.27 there's rest, and we need to take that rest. 00:16:18.31\00:16:20.48 And sometime I use that myself, come apart and rest a while. 00:16:20.51\00:16:23.81 And I need to use that more. 00:16:23.85\00:16:25.21 But sometimes we run on empty or we run, you know, 00:16:25.25\00:16:28.78 to where we're... 00:16:28.82\00:16:30.75 My dad sometimes said, son, you're running on fumes. 00:16:30.79\00:16:33.32 You know, I don't know 00:16:33.36\00:16:34.69 what empty means and running on fumes, 00:16:34.72\00:16:36.73 but running on fumes means you're just about out. 00:16:36.76\00:16:38.46 It's about all she wrote. 00:16:38.49\00:16:40.20 And so, again, what do we have to give to someone else. 00:16:40.23\00:16:43.06 It's more than just about us. 00:16:43.10\00:16:44.50 It's more than about even our family. 00:16:44.53\00:16:46.00 It's about God's work. 00:16:46.03\00:16:47.54 We need to be top condition mentally, physically, 00:16:47.57\00:16:50.64 spiritually, that we might help others along the way. 00:16:50.67\00:16:53.48 And again, I don't want to be running on fumes. 00:16:53.51\00:16:55.64 We have aches and we have pains and, 00:16:55.68\00:16:57.61 you know, and sometimes we ask ourselves, 00:16:57.65\00:16:59.88 "Does God really care?" 00:16:59.91\00:17:01.25 I just had a man yesterday that said, 00:17:01.28\00:17:02.78 I don't think God really cares. 00:17:02.82\00:17:04.52 Well, that's, it's a sad question to come 00:17:04.55\00:17:06.45 from an individual who knows God, you know, 00:17:06.49\00:17:09.12 and sometimes we say that and then say, 00:17:09.16\00:17:11.19 "How can we do it in our human mind 00:17:11.23\00:17:13.46 and in our human thinking?" 00:17:13.50\00:17:16.00 God, at least to me, 00:17:16.03\00:17:17.37 God has had His share of disappointments too, 00:17:17.40\00:17:19.47 His share of disappointment 00:17:19.50\00:17:20.84 when He look at each one of us sometime 00:17:20.87\00:17:22.20 and how miserably we have failed, 00:17:22.24\00:17:23.61 that we'll come back to Him. 00:17:23.64\00:17:24.97 Praise God. 00:17:25.01\00:17:26.34 But you know, a little different maybe 00:17:26.37\00:17:27.71 than way we look at here 00:17:27.74\00:17:29.08 because we've rebelled against Him. 00:17:29.11\00:17:30.45 Lesson on Monday Sinners around Jeremiah 45. 00:17:30.48\00:17:32.55 So get your Bible out and just jot down these. 00:17:32.58\00:17:34.58 We won't be able to go through it all. 00:17:34.62\00:17:35.95 But Jeremiah 45:1-5, 00:17:35.98\00:17:38.75 which just tells of Baruch's emotional health, 00:17:38.79\00:17:42.79 and maybe ours, you know, we think about mentally, 00:17:42.82\00:17:45.49 physically, so he's emotional. 00:17:45.53\00:17:47.23 And so, as we read Jeremiah 45:1, 00:17:47.26\00:17:49.63 it tells us that the word that Jeremiah spoke, 00:17:49.66\00:17:52.43 he spoke to his prophet. 00:17:52.47\00:17:54.07 Again, he was in prison himself, 00:17:54.10\00:17:55.60 but he was encouraging. 00:17:55.64\00:17:56.97 You love it. 00:17:57.01\00:17:58.34 Sometimes people are going through 00:17:58.37\00:17:59.71 some terrible things them self, but you know, 00:17:59.74\00:18:01.08 they can speak words of encouragement and share 00:18:01.11\00:18:02.44 when somebody else 00:18:02.48\00:18:03.81 needs that along the way in time of need. 00:18:03.85\00:18:05.85 Jeremiah 45:3 just simply says this that Jeremiah's, 00:18:05.88\00:18:09.18 we call his secretary, this point, he ran empty. 00:18:09.22\00:18:12.62 He was running on empty. 00:18:12.65\00:18:13.99 He couldn't really seem to go anymore. 00:18:14.02\00:18:15.69 And he said, what? How do we know that? 00:18:15.72\00:18:17.46 Well, Jeremiah 45:3 said, Woe is me. 00:18:17.49\00:18:21.10 I don't know if anybody's ever said that beside me. 00:18:21.13\00:18:24.03 Woe is me. 00:18:24.07\00:18:25.40 And, you know, sometime if I get, 00:18:25.43\00:18:26.87 if I come to that point, woe is me. 00:18:26.90\00:18:29.00 The Holy Spirit, I thank God for impressing me, woe is you. 00:18:29.04\00:18:31.77 Is that right? Really. 00:18:31.81\00:18:33.14 You know, really, you look around, 00:18:33.17\00:18:34.94 and that's all we need to do. 00:18:34.98\00:18:36.31 Woe is me. 00:18:36.34\00:18:37.68 And so and it really because, you know, Jeremiah as he visit, 00:18:37.71\00:18:40.98 the scribe visit him in prison, and so on and so forth. 00:18:41.02\00:18:43.72 We had the king and his men, 00:18:43.75\00:18:45.09 everybody seemed to turn against him. 00:18:45.12\00:18:47.12 The prophet's message we say here. 00:18:47.16\00:18:48.82 It was enough going on, he almost lost his mind. 00:18:48.86\00:18:53.76 Again, he was looking for a future, 00:18:53.80\00:18:55.20 he was looking to do something, 00:18:55.23\00:18:56.56 maybe in the cause of Christ, 00:18:56.60\00:18:57.93 he was looking for something different, 00:18:57.97\00:18:59.30 but he's running on empty 00:18:59.33\00:19:00.67 because of what was going out. 00:19:00.70\00:19:02.04 He was depressed, and sometime we call it down and out. 00:19:02.07\00:19:04.97 I don't like that down and out. 00:19:05.01\00:19:06.34 I don't like that, I've been depressed and so on. 00:19:06.37\00:19:08.31 Many people go through that by the millions. 00:19:08.34\00:19:10.38 And, you know, I know God is our way out from that. 00:19:10.41\00:19:13.11 Absolutely. Of individuals. 00:19:13.15\00:19:15.88 Again, as an individual, 00:19:15.92\00:19:17.89 this scribe had a office of high position. 00:19:17.92\00:19:21.96 To me that's a lot of stress, 00:19:21.99\00:19:23.79 that can cause a lot of anxiety some time 00:19:23.83\00:19:25.99 and you have one thing happening 00:19:26.03\00:19:27.36 upon the other 00:19:27.40\00:19:28.73 and you can't get done one thing for something else 00:19:28.76\00:19:30.60 is coming upon you. 00:19:30.63\00:19:31.97 And so we find it, 00:19:32.00\00:19:33.47 Jeremiah faced bitter disappointment himself. 00:19:33.50\00:19:35.80 So he was good to help his scribe, 00:19:35.84\00:19:38.74 because he faced these difficulties 00:19:38.77\00:19:40.51 and he had come through it. 00:19:40.54\00:19:42.01 I like to talk to somebody sometime that's been in it. 00:19:42.04\00:19:45.35 Right, that's been in a battle, that's done it and say, 00:19:45.38\00:19:48.05 you know, I've been there. 00:19:48.08\00:19:49.58 And here's what God has done for me, 00:19:49.62\00:19:51.02 and what a blessing that is, 00:19:51.05\00:19:52.39 and that's exactly what he was, you know. 00:19:52.42\00:19:54.62 We talk about bittersweet. 00:19:54.66\00:19:55.99 That's the word that's kind of interesting. 00:19:56.02\00:19:57.59 It's a bittersweet. 00:19:57.63\00:20:00.06 We had to realize in this life, there is, there is better, 00:20:00.10\00:20:02.86 and there is sweet. 00:20:02.90\00:20:04.57 You know, it rains on the just and the unjust. 00:20:04.60\00:20:06.57 That's what the Bible says. 00:20:06.60\00:20:07.94 But, yeah, and there's failure and some time 00:20:07.97\00:20:10.61 and there's prosperity also. 00:20:10.64\00:20:12.71 Jeremiah 5 there, 45:5, 00:20:12.74\00:20:14.88 we're looking at encourages him to seek not, 00:20:14.91\00:20:17.21 here's what he said, 00:20:17.25\00:20:18.58 "Seek not the things of this earth." 00:20:18.61\00:20:20.38 He knew his scribe, right? 00:20:20.42\00:20:21.75 He knew he was seeking things of this world and going on. 00:20:21.78\00:20:24.35 He said, "Don't seek the things of this world, 00:20:24.39\00:20:26.59 but seek out God's will for you." 00:20:26.62\00:20:29.42 And so I encourage you, each person has a special plan, 00:20:29.46\00:20:32.73 no doubt in my mind, to work, to be able to work for God. 00:20:32.76\00:20:36.26 If you want to work for Him, God has a plan for you. 00:20:36.30\00:20:38.43 It's already mapped out. 00:20:38.47\00:20:39.90 You just need to open your ears, and your eyes, 00:20:39.93\00:20:41.50 and your mind and follow His plan. 00:20:41.54\00:20:43.47 Many a young man, I think in ministry, 00:20:43.51\00:20:46.68 maybe you find in the church that they're setting out 00:20:46.71\00:20:49.54 in this world, you know, and they had aspirations 00:20:49.58\00:20:53.28 and they want to accomplish an awful lot, you know. 00:20:53.31\00:20:56.45 And some of them are aware that God can use them, 00:20:56.48\00:20:58.42 others are not aware that God can use them. 00:20:58.45\00:21:00.46 I think we need to be an encouragement. 00:21:00.49\00:21:02.26 And when this suffering came, and the mental aspect of it 00:21:02.29\00:21:05.83 and the grief and the sorrow and so on. 00:21:05.86\00:21:08.60 Here's how he looked at it. 00:21:08.63\00:21:09.96 I have one problem after another. 00:21:10.00\00:21:13.20 That happens, I think, probably most of us said, 00:21:13.23\00:21:14.77 oh, no, not something else. 00:21:14.80\00:21:16.30 But every day something breaks down 00:21:16.34\00:21:17.67 and we say, not something else. 00:21:17.71\00:21:19.27 Something else went haywire. 00:21:19.31\00:21:20.64 Someone else is gonna have to take my time. 00:21:20.68\00:21:22.34 Baruch was a good young man. 00:21:22.38\00:21:24.35 He was doing service for God. There's no doubt about. 00:21:24.38\00:21:26.41 But let me just get quickly, a couple minutes here left, 00:21:26.45\00:21:28.35 a little counsel for the young. 00:21:28.38\00:21:30.39 Since I'm older, I can say well, 00:21:30.42\00:21:31.95 we get a little counsel for the young, 00:21:31.99\00:21:33.46 so at least keep yours open, 00:21:33.49\00:21:34.82 if it goes along the Word of God take it, 00:21:34.86\00:21:36.36 if not, then you can certainly throw it out. 00:21:36.39\00:21:38.53 Young beginners are apt to become discouraged, 00:21:38.56\00:21:41.30 number one, with small difficulties. 00:21:41.33\00:21:43.97 But it seemed overwhelming, 00:21:44.00\00:21:45.33 and to them they are overwhelmed. 00:21:45.37\00:21:46.70 But we have to realize it's maybe God is so gracious. 00:21:46.74\00:21:49.64 It's small, it's not overwhelming. 00:21:49.67\00:21:52.14 Proverbs 20:14. 00:21:52.17\00:21:54.18 If the faint, this is what it says," 00:21:54.21\00:21:55.54 If thou faintest in the day of adversary, 00:21:55.58\00:21:58.18 thy strength is small." 00:21:58.21\00:21:59.81 You see? 00:21:59.85\00:22:01.18 And so, that's the way it begins out for the young. 00:22:01.22\00:22:03.69 And, of course, number two, some of God's servants, 00:22:03.72\00:22:06.65 when a storm comes their way, they run for it. 00:22:06.69\00:22:10.23 They don't hit it head on. 00:22:10.26\00:22:11.59 They don't say meet the thing. 00:22:11.63\00:22:12.96 They just, they run for cover. 00:22:12.99\00:22:14.76 And, you know, they think, "Well, there's no way that 00:22:14.80\00:22:16.93 I'm going to be able to get through this." 00:22:16.97\00:22:18.30 Number three, God takes notice of our behavior. 00:22:18.33\00:22:22.27 He knows every, all the frets, all the discomforts, 00:22:22.30\00:22:26.24 all the anxiety, all the... 00:22:26.27\00:22:28.04 I wanna say a lack of faith if you allow me do that. 00:22:28.08\00:22:30.15 Sometime God is there, but remember, 00:22:30.18\00:22:32.25 He's there to help to correct us 00:22:32.28\00:22:33.75 and to lead us and to guide us back. 00:22:33.78\00:22:35.68 But still, God encourages each one of us 00:22:35.72\00:22:38.62 in a very clear way to live our life know that, 00:22:38.65\00:22:41.29 that we might be what He would have us to be. 00:22:41.32\00:22:44.19 I feel like I'm challenged sometime. 00:22:44.23\00:22:45.86 You feel like you're challenged? 00:22:45.89\00:22:47.23 You feel like you're challenged at home? 00:22:47.26\00:22:48.60 This lesson brings out that when these challenges come, 00:22:48.63\00:22:51.20 again, maybe your city is going to be destroyed 00:22:51.23\00:22:53.00 as it was here, it's talking about here. 00:22:53.03\00:22:54.37 Maybe your job is on the line. 00:22:54.40\00:22:55.74 You know, you have family problems 00:22:55.77\00:22:57.11 and disasters that may come. 00:22:57.14\00:22:59.71 But remember, God is there, He's not going to leave, 00:22:59.74\00:23:01.44 He's not going to forsake you. 00:23:01.48\00:23:03.55 He expects us, He said to you, I'm gonna cause you to ride 00:23:03.58\00:23:06.05 on the high places of the earth, 00:23:06.08\00:23:07.42 just to be obedient to Him, you know. 00:23:07.45\00:23:09.98 Well, God gives us life I believe, 00:23:10.02\00:23:11.65 we can't really complain about the disappointments 00:23:11.69\00:23:14.89 and even though we have that tendency 00:23:14.92\00:23:16.46 as human beings, right? 00:23:16.49\00:23:17.83 What's it like, oh, 00:23:17.86\00:23:19.19 you don't like for us to change. 00:23:19.23\00:23:20.56 But again, I'm saying don't by the grace of God, 00:23:20.60\00:23:23.53 whatever you do, don't run on empty. 00:23:23.57\00:23:26.00 Don't even get close to that. 00:23:26.03\00:23:28.57 I don't know about you, 00:23:28.60\00:23:29.94 but I look at my gas tank sometime 00:23:29.97\00:23:31.37 and it's usually pretty close to empty sometime 00:23:31.41\00:23:33.38 when I need to get somewhere fast. 00:23:33.41\00:23:36.34 And I don't have time to stop. 00:23:36.38\00:23:38.45 And sometimes spiritual life is kind of that way, 00:23:38.48\00:23:40.92 that's what we need to look at too. 00:23:40.95\00:23:42.48 But remember, don't wait till you go on empty. 00:23:42.52\00:23:44.65 You run that vehicle out of gas and I guarantee you, 00:23:44.69\00:23:47.26 it's gonna be more difficult to start. 00:23:47.29\00:23:49.22 It's going to take maybe a professional, 00:23:49.26\00:23:50.73 it's going to take somebody maybe to come and help you 00:23:50.76\00:23:52.39 because sometime you just, 00:23:52.43\00:23:53.76 you can't just put gas in and grind it 00:23:53.80\00:23:55.13 because sometime you grind it 00:23:55.16\00:23:56.50 and your battery is not charged if you know what I mean. 00:23:56.53\00:23:58.57 Battery can't take it and it just won't start. 00:23:58.60\00:24:01.04 And so, when I look at that gas gauge 00:24:01.07\00:24:02.97 and when you're looking at your spiritually today, 00:24:03.00\00:24:05.34 and you're running low, you're not feeling like, 00:24:05.37\00:24:07.98 you know, God is there. 00:24:08.01\00:24:09.38 I tell you right now, God is there, 00:24:09.41\00:24:10.98 God's gonna speak good words to you. 00:24:11.01\00:24:12.41 Open your ears and listen, He's gonna help you. 00:24:12.45\00:24:14.62 Amen. 00:24:14.65\00:24:15.98 Well, Pastor Kenny, running on empty. 00:24:16.02\00:24:17.89 Yeah, mercy. 00:24:17.92\00:24:19.25 We don't want you to run on empty. 00:24:19.29\00:24:20.62 But don't go away, 00:24:20.66\00:24:21.99 we'll be back in just a few moments. 00:24:22.02\00:24:23.43 Amen. 00:24:23.46\00:24:24.79 Ever wish you could watch a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel 00:24:29.93\00:24:32.73 again, or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:25:37.67\00:25:39.00 Now before you turn the channel, 00:25:39.03\00:25:40.37 and you say, I don't even want to get into that. 00:25:40.40\00:25:42.94 Hold on, because at the end, we're going to talk about, 00:25:42.97\00:25:46.11 specifically about five different Hebrew words 00:25:46.14\00:25:48.64 during our lesson. 00:25:48.68\00:25:50.05 But then we have seven takeaways, 00:25:50.08\00:25:52.21 and what I have learned from those five words, 00:25:52.25\00:25:55.48 and how we can find rest today, 00:25:55.52\00:25:57.42 just like they did in the Old Testament time. 00:25:57.45\00:25:59.62 If you were, if anyone was counting, 00:25:59.65\00:26:01.89 there are 34 Hebrew words in the Old Testament 00:26:01.92\00:26:06.19 that referred to rest, rested, or resting. 00:26:06.23\00:26:11.33 And there's one actually in Chaldea, 00:26:11.37\00:26:13.44 Chaldean from the Book of Daniel. 00:26:13.47\00:26:15.90 We're not going to look at all 34 of those or 35, 00:26:15.94\00:26:18.87 we just picked five, and I just picked five 00:26:18.91\00:26:20.71 that just jumped out at me. 00:26:20.74\00:26:22.54 So the first word is shakhab. 00:26:22.58\00:26:25.01 It means to lie down or asleep. 00:26:25.05\00:26:27.88 There it occurs 208 times in the Old Testament, 00:26:27.92\00:26:32.15 and we find that one of the times 00:26:32.19\00:26:33.59 is Genesis 28:11. 00:26:33.62\00:26:35.56 This is, of course, talking about Jacob. 00:26:35.59\00:26:37.46 Genesis 28:11, he, that's Jacob, 00:26:37.49\00:26:40.50 he's running, remember from the wrath of his brother. 00:26:40.53\00:26:43.90 "He came to a certain place and stayed there all night, 00:26:43.93\00:26:46.57 because the sun had set. 00:26:46.60\00:26:48.20 And he took up one of the stones of that place 00:26:48.24\00:26:50.61 and put it at his head, and lay down, shakhab, 00:26:50.64\00:26:54.78 and went to sleep." 00:26:54.81\00:26:57.15 There it just means to lie down or to sleep. 00:26:57.18\00:27:00.38 Now the same word shakhab has a different connotation, 00:27:00.42\00:27:04.02 and it can refer to sexual intimacy. 00:27:04.05\00:27:07.36 We see this in Genesis 39. 00:27:07.39\00:27:09.86 Potiphar's wife, remember, 00:27:09.89\00:27:11.23 she came on to Joseph and what did she say? 00:27:11.26\00:27:13.83 Lie with me, it's the same word, shakhab. 00:27:13.86\00:27:16.90 In that case, it does not mean lie down 00:27:16.93\00:27:18.87 and sleep, it's referring to sexual intimacy. 00:27:18.90\00:27:23.20 The next word we're going to look at is Shabbat. 00:27:23.24\00:27:25.74 And it's actually the verb form of the noun Sabbath. 00:27:25.77\00:27:28.91 We have Sabbath in the Old Testament. 00:27:28.94\00:27:31.25 This is the verb form, it means to cease, 00:27:31.28\00:27:33.98 to desist, to rest, 00:27:34.02\00:27:36.99 to take a holiday, even to celebrate. 00:27:37.02\00:27:39.92 I love that word. 00:27:39.95\00:27:41.39 It occurred 71 times in the Old Testament. 00:27:41.42\00:27:44.13 It's a verb. We see it in Genesis 2. 00:27:44.16\00:27:46.19 Pastor John referenced that, Genesis 2:2-3. 00:27:46.23\00:27:50.17 "And on the seventh day God ended His work 00:27:50.20\00:27:53.00 which He had done, and He rested 00:27:53.03\00:27:55.20 on the seventh day from all His work 00:27:55.24\00:27:56.77 which He had done. 00:27:56.81\00:27:58.14 Then God blessed the seventh day 00:27:58.17\00:27:59.81 and sanctified it, because in it He rested," 00:27:59.84\00:28:03.58 there's our word Shabbat, 00:28:03.61\00:28:05.41 "He rested from all His work 00:28:05.45\00:28:07.32 which God created and made." 00:28:07.35\00:28:09.12 That means to stop from labor, to cease from labor, to rest. 00:28:09.15\00:28:14.56 We also see it in Exodus 5:5, 00:28:14.59\00:28:17.13 and here it has a little different connotation. 00:28:17.16\00:28:19.09 The other connotation means you rest, 00:28:19.13\00:28:21.76 we're encouraged to rest. 00:28:21.80\00:28:24.00 In Exodus 5, it literally means you're forced to rest. 00:28:24.03\00:28:28.34 Exodus 5:5, "Pharaoh said, 00:28:28.37\00:28:31.94 'Look, the people of the land are many now, 00:28:31.97\00:28:34.18 and you make them rest, Shabbat, from their labor!'" 00:28:34.21\00:28:38.55 In that case, it means you're going 00:28:38.58\00:28:40.12 to force them to rest. 00:28:40.15\00:28:42.45 Ezekiel 16:41 has the same connotation. 00:28:42.48\00:28:45.45 "They shall burn your houses with fire, 00:28:45.49\00:28:47.19 and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women, 00:28:47.22\00:28:50.03 and I will make you cease," 00:28:50.06\00:28:52.23 there's that word Shabbat, meaning force to rest, 00:28:52.26\00:28:55.56 "I will make you cease playing the harlot, 00:28:55.60\00:28:57.77 and you shall no longer hire lovers." 00:28:57.80\00:29:00.47 Let's look at our third word. 00:29:00.50\00:29:02.14 This word is nuach. 00:29:02.17\00:29:03.81 Now, I should tell you, 00:29:03.84\00:29:05.17 I should have told you up front, 00:29:05.21\00:29:06.54 I'm not sure any of these words are pronounced correctly. 00:29:06.57\00:29:08.11 So this is just Jill's interpretation. 00:29:08.14\00:29:10.21 This word is nuach. 00:29:10.25\00:29:11.58 And it means to rest, to settle down, to remain, 00:29:11.61\00:29:15.02 to lay down or to be quiet. 00:29:15.05\00:29:18.75 It happened 67 times in the Old Testament, 00:29:18.79\00:29:21.46 and it's a verb again. 00:29:21.49\00:29:22.82 We see it actually in the fourth commandment. 00:29:22.86\00:29:24.76 Exodus 20:11, "In six days the Lord made heaven and earth, 00:29:24.79\00:29:28.43 the sea, and all that in them is, 00:29:28.46\00:29:30.03 and rested, nuach, the seventh day. 00:29:30.07\00:29:33.60 Therefore the Lord blessed 00:29:33.64\00:29:34.97 the Sabbath day and hallowed it." 00:29:35.00\00:29:36.34 It means to repose, to be quiet, to have rest. 00:29:36.37\00:29:40.41 We see it again with the ark. 00:29:40.44\00:29:42.14 This is Genesis 8:4, "Then the ark rested, nuach, 00:29:42.18\00:29:46.68 in the seventh month, 00:29:46.72\00:29:48.05 the seventeenth day of the month, 00:29:48.08\00:29:49.42 on the mountains of Ararat." 00:29:49.45\00:29:50.79 In this case, it means the ark literally settled down, 00:29:50.82\00:29:54.72 and it remained. 00:29:54.76\00:29:56.83 The word for Noah, you know the genealogy of Noah 00:29:56.86\00:30:00.10 and Noah in the Old Testament, 00:30:00.13\00:30:02.13 his name actually comes from nuach as well, 00:30:02.16\00:30:04.13 meaning to rest. 00:30:04.17\00:30:05.50 Noah worked hard 00:30:05.53\00:30:06.87 all those years building the ark 00:30:06.90\00:30:08.24 and what happened? 00:30:08.27\00:30:09.60 He rested when he got on the ark. 00:30:09.64\00:30:10.97 The fourth word 00:30:11.01\00:30:12.34 we're going to look at is shaqat. 00:30:12.37\00:30:14.04 It means to be quiet or undisturbed, 00:30:14.08\00:30:16.54 to be at rest. 00:30:16.58\00:30:18.81 It occurs 41 times in the Old Testament 00:30:18.85\00:30:21.12 and it's a verb as well. 00:30:21.15\00:30:22.48 We see this in Joshua 11:23, "Joshua took the whole land, 00:30:22.52\00:30:27.59 according to all that the Lord had said to Moses, 00:30:27.62\00:30:30.29 and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel 00:30:30.33\00:30:34.06 according to their divisions by their tribes. 00:30:34.10\00:30:36.53 Then the land rested from war." 00:30:36.56\00:30:40.27 Shaqat, meaning the land is at rest 00:30:40.30\00:30:43.37 after Joshua's initial conquest of Canaan. 00:30:43.41\00:30:47.44 The last word we're going to look at is raga. 00:30:47.48\00:30:50.51 And it actually has kind of two different meanings, 00:30:50.55\00:30:54.25 and it only occurs 12 times in the Old Testament 00:30:54.28\00:30:56.48 and it's a verb as well. 00:30:56.52\00:30:57.95 One of the meanings means to be at rest, 00:30:57.99\00:31:00.66 to repose, to be quiet. 00:31:00.69\00:31:03.89 We see that in Deuteronomy 28:65. 00:31:03.93\00:31:07.53 Deuteronomy 28:65, it says, 00:31:07.56\00:31:09.93 "Among those nations you shall find no rest." 00:31:09.96\00:31:13.20 Meaning you're not going to repose, 00:31:13.23\00:31:14.70 you're not going to be quiet. 00:31:14.74\00:31:16.34 But the other meaning that it has is very interesting, 00:31:16.37\00:31:18.67 it means to toss violently. 00:31:18.71\00:31:20.58 Now that's opposite, being at rest, right? 00:31:20.61\00:31:23.11 To toss violently and suddenly, like the sea with the waves. 00:31:23.14\00:31:28.38 We see this in Job 26:12, "He stirs up the sea 00:31:28.42\00:31:32.39 with His power," that word raga, 00:31:32.42\00:31:35.12 "stirs up the sea with his power, 00:31:35.16\00:31:38.03 and by his understanding He breaks up the storm." 00:31:38.06\00:31:40.46 So you might say, what in the world does 00:31:40.50\00:31:41.83 that have to do with me and rest? 00:31:41.86\00:31:44.03 Those are five Hebrew words. 00:31:44.07\00:31:45.47 But okay, what does that mean? 00:31:45.50\00:31:47.30 These are my seven takeaways 00:31:47.34\00:31:49.20 about what rest means biblically 00:31:49.24\00:31:52.54 from the Old Testament, 00:31:52.57\00:31:54.44 just from those five Hebrew words. 00:31:54.48\00:31:57.35 Takeaway number one, rest means complete peace 00:31:57.38\00:32:01.95 and security in Jesus, 00:32:01.98\00:32:04.49 even when you're surrounded by uncertainty and fear. 00:32:04.52\00:32:08.96 Think about Jacob running from his brother Esau, 00:32:08.99\00:32:12.13 running for his life. 00:32:12.16\00:32:14.63 And yet he had complete security 00:32:14.66\00:32:16.77 and peace in Jesus. 00:32:16.80\00:32:18.13 He was surrounded by uncertainty and fear. 00:32:18.17\00:32:20.94 And he laid down and shaqat, he laid down and rested. 00:32:20.97\00:32:25.87 That means today, when we're uncertain, 00:32:25.91\00:32:28.34 when we're surrounded with uncertainties, 00:32:28.38\00:32:30.61 when things are going on in your life that 00:32:30.65\00:32:32.38 you cannot control, 00:32:32.41\00:32:34.02 you can have complete peace and security in Jesus. 00:32:34.05\00:32:38.42 You can shaqat, you can rest in Jesus. 00:32:38.45\00:32:43.06 Takeaway number two, 00:32:43.09\00:32:44.43 rest means intimacy, excitement, 00:32:44.46\00:32:48.40 and joy with Jesus. 00:32:48.43\00:32:50.57 Of course, this is that same word shaqat, 00:32:50.60\00:32:52.83 meaning Potiphar's wife 00:32:52.87\00:32:54.20 in that whole sexual connotation 00:32:54.24\00:32:56.17 of lying with Joseph. 00:32:56.20\00:32:58.14 Now, I do not mean this in a sexual way, 00:32:58.17\00:33:00.61 of course with God, but it means that we can be 00:33:00.64\00:33:03.48 excited about our relationship with Him. 00:33:03.51\00:33:05.91 We can have an intimate relationship with God. 00:33:05.95\00:33:10.09 He is our Father, and we can know Him intimately, 00:33:10.12\00:33:14.92 and He knows us from the inside out. 00:33:14.96\00:33:17.79 Rest means intimacy with God. 00:33:17.83\00:33:21.13 Takeaway number three, 00:33:21.16\00:33:22.73 rest means setting aside your own labor, 00:33:22.76\00:33:26.50 both physical and mental, and resting in God. 00:33:26.53\00:33:31.11 This is what we see with the fourth commandment. 00:33:31.14\00:33:33.41 Every week, God gives us rest. 00:33:33.44\00:33:36.24 Every week, He gives us an opportunity 00:33:36.28\00:33:38.45 to set aside our physical and mental labor and work, 00:33:38.48\00:33:43.22 and we can rest, 00:33:43.25\00:33:44.59 of course, that's the word Shabbat. 00:33:44.62\00:33:46.89 Takeaway number four, rest. 00:33:46.92\00:33:49.89 It can be enforced by God. 00:33:49.92\00:33:51.93 Now that is an interesting twist. 00:33:51.96\00:33:54.50 Remember, we talked that same word Shabbat, 00:33:54.53\00:33:57.33 you can choose that rest, 00:33:57.37\00:33:59.03 but actually can be enforced as well. 00:33:59.07\00:34:02.20 In Ezekiel 16, we saw where God forced them 00:34:02.24\00:34:05.34 to stop playing the harlot, 00:34:05.37\00:34:07.51 you shall cease playing the harlot. 00:34:07.54\00:34:10.18 Rest sometimes in some circumstances 00:34:10.21\00:34:13.21 we go through and we'd say, 00:34:13.25\00:34:14.62 but why are things not opening? 00:34:14.65\00:34:15.98 Well, why are things not happening? 00:34:16.02\00:34:17.42 Well, why is God not moving? 00:34:17.45\00:34:19.29 It might be that He has you in a time of rest. 00:34:19.32\00:34:23.73 Takeaway number five, 00:34:23.76\00:34:25.16 rest means just simply settling down 00:34:25.19\00:34:27.90 to abide with God, like the ark, nuach, 00:34:27.93\00:34:31.13 resting on the mountains. 00:34:31.17\00:34:32.50 We settle down and we abide in him. 00:34:32.53\00:34:35.24 Takeaway number six, rest means I am quiet and undisturbed, 00:34:35.27\00:34:40.61 shaqat. 00:34:40.64\00:34:41.98 This is the land that was at rest 00:34:42.01\00:34:43.55 after Joshua conquered Canaan. 00:34:43.58\00:34:46.11 Rest means that I can be quiet, that I can be undisturbed. 00:34:46.15\00:34:51.15 And finally, takeaway number seven, 00:34:51.19\00:34:53.15 rest sometimes it stirs us up to action. 00:34:53.19\00:34:56.79 Now we might not think that rest does that. 00:34:56.83\00:34:59.46 The sea been stirred up by his power, raga, 00:34:59.49\00:35:02.86 sometimes rest stirs us up to action. 00:35:02.90\00:35:06.03 Pastor Ryan. Yeah. 00:35:06.07\00:35:07.40 Thank you so much. 00:35:07.44\00:35:08.77 Well, I'm gonna continue on that 00:35:08.80\00:35:10.14 same note that theological word, 00:35:10.17\00:35:12.74 search and learning of what these words mean 00:35:12.77\00:35:14.61 into the New Testament. 00:35:14.64\00:35:16.11 Because obviously, the concept of rest, 00:35:16.14\00:35:18.61 the idea of rest, 00:35:18.65\00:35:19.98 spiritual rest, physical rest continues 00:35:20.02\00:35:22.62 into the New Testament as well. 00:35:22.65\00:35:24.65 When I was doing, 00:35:24.69\00:35:26.02 when I was thinking of rest in the New Testament, 00:35:26.05\00:35:28.32 of course, the text that come to my mind, 00:35:28.36\00:35:30.03 immediately pastor read it earlier. 00:35:30.06\00:35:32.19 And that is Matthew 11:28, 00:35:32.23\00:35:35.40 probably one of the most famous passages 00:35:35.43\00:35:38.07 and famous phrases 00:35:38.10\00:35:39.73 and sentences that Jesus declares 00:35:39.77\00:35:42.20 in all of His ministry. 00:35:42.24\00:35:44.51 And, of course, this is Matthew 11:28, 00:35:44.54\00:35:46.24 where Jesus says, "Come unto Me, 00:35:46.27\00:35:48.51 all you who labor and are heavy laden, 00:35:48.54\00:35:51.31 and I will give you rest." 00:35:51.35\00:35:54.88 And the word here in the Greek is the word anapauso, 00:35:54.92\00:35:59.02 which simply means to rest, to relax, to refresh, 00:35:59.05\00:36:03.93 and this would probably be, 00:36:03.96\00:36:05.29 there was a word I was waiting for you to say, 00:36:05.33\00:36:07.00 you didn't say it though, but that's okay. 00:36:07.03\00:36:08.56 It's a Hebrew word, known as nefesh. 00:36:08.60\00:36:11.67 It simply means to be refreshed. 00:36:11.70\00:36:13.90 Or, if you could, if you could give 00:36:13.94\00:36:15.80 a physical example of this would almost be like, 00:36:15.84\00:36:18.37 what God did on the seventh day, in a sense, 00:36:18.41\00:36:20.34 is what He didn't physically rested as if, 00:36:20.38\00:36:22.41 in a you know, creating that cow 00:36:22.44\00:36:24.55 took it out of me, right? 00:36:24.58\00:36:26.11 More or less, he was just kind of just sitting back 00:36:26.15\00:36:29.68 and just taking it in like, you know, 00:36:29.72\00:36:31.75 it's a refreshing 00:36:31.79\00:36:33.12 and that's what Christ is saying, 00:36:33.15\00:36:34.49 "Come unto me all you who labor 00:36:34.52\00:36:35.86 and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." 00:36:35.89\00:36:38.53 Of course, a spiritual rest, a physical rest, 00:36:38.56\00:36:41.30 a mental and emotional rest, 00:36:41.33\00:36:43.10 that nobody else can provide, 00:36:43.13\00:36:44.67 but only Jesus Christ, come unto me, He says. 00:36:44.70\00:36:47.57 Of course, this word anapauso 00:36:47.60\00:36:49.77 can also describe or be described 00:36:49.80\00:36:52.54 or be defined as a physical rest as well. 00:36:52.57\00:36:56.64 For instance, in Matthew 26:45, it says this. 00:36:56.68\00:37:00.92 It says, "Then He came to His disciples 00:37:00.95\00:37:02.55 and said to them, 00:37:02.58\00:37:03.92 'Are you still sleeping and resting?" 00:37:03.95\00:37:06.79 Anapauso right there. 00:37:06.82\00:37:08.36 "Behold, the hour is at hand, 00:37:08.39\00:37:09.76 and the Son of Man is being betrayed 00:37:09.79\00:37:11.13 into the hands of sinners." 00:37:11.16\00:37:12.49 So again, this is when He comes 00:37:12.53\00:37:13.86 and catches the disciples sleeping there. 00:37:13.90\00:37:15.76 You know, they are wore out, 00:37:15.80\00:37:17.13 they had a full day ride and so, 00:37:17.17\00:37:18.50 but they fall into sleep, even though Christ said, 00:37:18.53\00:37:21.24 you know, awake, pray, 00:37:21.27\00:37:22.70 because unless you gonna come into temptation. 00:37:22.74\00:37:25.54 Of course, in the final greeting to the Corinthians, 00:37:25.57\00:37:28.31 Paul also uses this word, this expression, 00:37:28.34\00:37:31.01 expressing his joy over the arrival of friends 00:37:31.05\00:37:33.82 who refreshed his spirit. 00:37:33.85\00:37:36.28 We can find that in 1 Corinthians 16:18, as well. 00:37:36.32\00:37:41.56 Another word you will often 00:37:41.59\00:37:42.92 find in the Greek that is often expressed 00:37:42.96\00:37:44.86 throughout the New Testament 00:37:44.89\00:37:46.23 is it's kind of a fun word to say, hesu katso. 00:37:46.26\00:37:49.93 Whoo. Hesu Katso. 00:37:49.96\00:37:52.47 Almost sounds Italian, hesu katso. 00:37:52.50\00:37:54.60 But it's Greek. 00:37:54.64\00:37:56.71 But this is actually, it's interesting 00:37:56.74\00:37:58.24 because one of those famous texts 00:37:58.27\00:37:59.64 that we read often in association 00:37:59.67\00:38:01.24 with Sabbath keeping, Luke 23:56. 00:38:01.28\00:38:05.41 Christ has just been crucified, 00:38:05.45\00:38:07.32 He's going to be obviously wrapped 00:38:07.35\00:38:09.15 and placed in the tomb. 00:38:09.18\00:38:10.52 And then obviously, they didn't have time 00:38:10.55\00:38:11.89 to enbalmed the body of Jesus. 00:38:11.92\00:38:13.25 So notice, Luke 23:56, says, 00:38:13.29\00:38:15.49 "And they returned and prepared spices 00:38:15.52\00:38:17.49 and fragrant oils. 00:38:17.53\00:38:19.03 And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment." 00:38:19.06\00:38:23.70 So this is referring to the actions 00:38:23.73\00:38:26.33 or what they would have experienced in returning 00:38:26.37\00:38:28.50 for that Sabbath rest. 00:38:28.54\00:38:30.51 It's also used to describe this word, 00:38:30.54\00:38:32.67 again, hesu katso is described, 00:38:32.71\00:38:36.18 and living a kind of a quiet life. 00:38:36.21\00:38:38.18 You hesu katso, when you're just relaxing 00:38:38.21\00:38:40.48 and living a quiet life, 00:38:40.52\00:38:41.85 you can see that expressed 1 Thessalonians 4:11. 00:38:41.88\00:38:45.89 And it also can indicate that someone has no obligation, 00:38:45.92\00:38:49.32 and thus, they're just keeping quiet on 00:38:49.36\00:38:51.46 an issue or in regard. 00:38:51.49\00:38:52.83 I'm just going to stay out of it, 00:38:52.86\00:38:54.20 I'm going to hesu katso. 00:38:54.23\00:38:55.56 I'm going to just kind of back off 00:38:55.60\00:38:56.93 and just rest and just kind of stay out of that. 00:38:56.97\00:38:58.83 I'm going to keep to myself. 00:38:58.87\00:39:00.37 And you see an example of this in Acts 11:18. 00:39:00.40\00:39:05.21 Now, here's where probably 00:39:05.24\00:39:07.28 one of the most powerful passages 00:39:07.31\00:39:08.88 in all the New Testament 00:39:08.91\00:39:10.31 that expresses very clearly and you see the word 00:39:10.35\00:39:12.91 rest come up many, many, many times. 00:39:12.95\00:39:15.75 And that, of course, is Hebrews Chapter 4. 00:39:15.78\00:39:18.05 This is what I like to refer to as the rest chapter 00:39:18.09\00:39:21.06 because this is where we, you know, 00:39:21.09\00:39:22.86 the subject matter, Paul, 00:39:22.89\00:39:24.36 in which we believe Paul is the writer, 00:39:24.39\00:39:25.73 we really don't know for sure, 00:39:25.76\00:39:27.10 but we believe Paul is the writer 00:39:27.13\00:39:28.46 of the Book of Hebrews, at least I do. 00:39:28.50\00:39:30.23 I'm convinced that that's who the writer is. 00:39:30.27\00:39:32.13 But the writer of Hebrews expresses there in Hebrews 4:4, 00:39:32.17\00:39:36.00 he's talking about this rest that we enter into, 00:39:36.04\00:39:39.07 and then notice what he says there. 00:39:39.11\00:39:40.48 Verse 4, he says, "For He has spoken 00:39:40.51\00:39:43.35 in a certain place 00:39:43.38\00:39:44.71 on the seventh day in this way." 00:39:44.75\00:39:47.62 And then notice it refers back 00:39:47.65\00:39:49.22 to the Sabbath commandment and God rested. 00:39:49.25\00:39:52.09 That word there is a little bit different word, 00:39:52.12\00:39:54.32 it's the word katapausis. 00:39:54.36\00:39:56.79 These words are interesting, katapausis. 00:39:56.83\00:39:58.29 In the Greek it's simply is talking about again, 00:39:58.33\00:40:02.16 a resting, a Sabbath rest pertaining 00:40:02.20\00:40:04.60 to the seventh day, weekly Sabbath. 00:40:04.63\00:40:06.87 And, of course, the verse goes on to say, 00:40:06.90\00:40:08.24 "And God rested on the seventh day 00:40:08.27\00:40:09.60 from all His works." 00:40:09.64\00:40:10.97 Now a lot of people, 00:40:11.01\00:40:12.34 I just want to clarify this before we go any further. 00:40:12.37\00:40:13.91 I know we're going to have lots of opportunity 00:40:13.94\00:40:15.54 to talk about Sabbath keeping in this study 00:40:15.58\00:40:18.68 on rest throughout this entire study, 00:40:18.71\00:40:21.25 but I just want to emphasize this very clearly. 00:40:21.28\00:40:23.49 There's a lot of people that take Hebrews Chapter 4, 00:40:23.52\00:40:26.39 and they'll go to that where it talks about rest. 00:40:26.42\00:40:28.12 Oh, isn't talking about the Sabbath, 00:40:28.16\00:40:30.06 this is talking about resting in Christ in Jesus. 00:40:30.09\00:40:33.46 I've actually had ministers who tell me, 00:40:33.50\00:40:35.53 Jesus is now my Sabbath, 00:40:35.56\00:40:37.47 because, you know, Hebrews 4, 00:40:37.50\00:40:39.20 it doesn't mention Sabbath there, 00:40:39.23\00:40:40.87 it just says that he's going to give us a rest 00:40:40.90\00:40:43.14 and then also go back and manipulate this chapter 00:40:43.17\00:40:45.61 in connection with, you know, Matthew Chapter 11. 00:40:45.64\00:40:48.08 I just want to bring that out here 00:40:48.11\00:40:49.44 because even though the word here katapausis 00:40:49.48\00:40:52.38 is simply referring to rest, 00:40:52.41\00:40:54.88 and pertaining to the seventh day. 00:40:54.92\00:40:56.62 If you continue reading down that chapter, 00:40:56.65\00:40:58.29 we know that this is definitely referring to, 00:40:58.32\00:41:00.66 God is definitely pointing back to the Sabbath rest, 00:41:00.69\00:41:03.56 the weekly Sabbath rest in connection 00:41:03.59\00:41:05.59 with the commandment, 00:41:05.63\00:41:06.96 because when you get to verse 9, 00:41:07.00\00:41:08.33 notice what it says. 00:41:08.36\00:41:10.00 It says, "There remains therefore a rest." 00:41:10.03\00:41:13.50 First of all, let me ask is, 00:41:13.54\00:41:14.87 who's the Book of Hebrews written for? 00:41:14.90\00:41:17.11 Hebrews. 00:41:17.14\00:41:18.47 It was written for the Hebrews, right? 00:41:18.51\00:41:19.91 And so it's interesting that, 00:41:19.94\00:41:21.81 notice, verse 9 begins with therefore, 00:41:21.84\00:41:23.78 it says, there remains therefore, what remains? 00:41:23.81\00:41:26.25 Something. 00:41:26.28\00:41:27.62 You drop something, exactly right, 00:41:27.65\00:41:28.98 there's something carrying over, 00:41:29.02\00:41:30.35 because there's something remaining from what was. 00:41:30.39\00:41:32.92 And if you continue to read this entire chapter here, 00:41:32.95\00:41:35.32 it's powerful, because basically, 00:41:35.36\00:41:37.49 the writer says, look, the people, you know, 00:41:37.53\00:41:39.69 the Hebrew people, your ancestors, 00:41:39.73\00:41:41.93 they didn't enter into his rest, 00:41:41.96\00:41:43.40 in what way? 00:41:43.43\00:41:44.77 They profaned God Sabbath. 00:41:44.80\00:41:46.94 And now, the people in Jesus' time are in the time, 00:41:46.97\00:41:50.31 of course, this, the Book of Hebrews 00:41:50.34\00:41:51.67 probably would have been written some 30 plus years 00:41:51.71\00:41:54.11 after Jesus died. 00:41:54.14\00:41:55.48 So we're looking at the early to mid 60s AD. 00:41:55.51\00:41:58.28 You're talking about the writer here is writing and saying, 00:41:58.31\00:42:00.85 look, you still haven't quite entered it to His rest. 00:42:00.88\00:42:03.82 And you have to keep in mind this is just a few years 00:42:03.85\00:42:06.12 before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. 00:42:06.15\00:42:09.32 And so this is powerful to consider that 00:42:09.36\00:42:11.39 even in this New Testament context, 00:42:11.43\00:42:13.83 some 30 plus years after Christ has died, 00:42:13.86\00:42:16.73 the Hebrew writer here is saying, 00:42:16.77\00:42:18.27 hey, you still haven't 00:42:18.30\00:42:19.67 quite fully entered into his rest. 00:42:19.70\00:42:21.80 And here's what's interesting. 00:42:21.84\00:42:23.17 The word rest there in Hebrews 4:9, 00:42:23.20\00:42:25.11 it's not the same word for rest in Hebrews 4:4, 00:42:25.14\00:42:28.14 which is katapausis, right? We said that earlier. 00:42:28.18\00:42:30.81 But the word in Hebrews 4:9, 00:42:30.85\00:42:32.41 there remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 00:42:32.45\00:42:35.62 It's the word sabbatismos. 00:42:35.65\00:42:38.39 What does that sound like? 00:42:38.42\00:42:39.75 It would be the, 00:42:39.79\00:42:41.12 basically the Greek equivalent to the word Shabbat, 00:42:41.16\00:42:44.06 in the Hebrew. 00:42:44.09\00:42:45.43 This is God pointing us back to the Sabbath rest. 00:42:45.46\00:42:48.06 And what He's saying is, 00:42:48.10\00:42:49.43 I want you to enter into My rest fully. 00:42:49.46\00:42:52.00 Your ancestors didn't enter into My rest in its fullness 00:42:52.03\00:42:55.07 because they profaned My Sabbath. 00:42:55.10\00:42:57.54 Now, during the days of Christ, they flipped the script 00:42:57.57\00:42:59.94 and they said, oh, we're gonna keep 00:42:59.97\00:43:01.31 that Sabbath extra well, and now they made it out 00:43:01.34\00:43:03.71 to be this legalistic situation. 00:43:03.75\00:43:06.01 And so that's what the Hebrew writer's talking about. 00:43:06.05\00:43:07.78 So talking about rest in the New Testament, 00:43:07.82\00:43:10.85 it's powerful to consider that even in Hebrews Chapter 4. 00:43:10.89\00:43:13.36 I've had minister say, 00:43:13.39\00:43:14.72 the Sabbath isn't mentioned in the New Testament. 00:43:14.76\00:43:16.39 Help me, help me, Lord. 00:43:16.42\00:43:17.89 Pray for me when I run into brothers and sisters like that. 00:43:17.93\00:43:20.56 It's, the New Testament is flooded with rest talk, 00:43:20.60\00:43:23.53 Sabbath talk in which the Lord 00:43:23.57\00:43:25.27 is pointing us back to rest in Him, especially, 00:43:25.30\00:43:27.74 in taking advantage of that holy seventh day Sabbath 00:43:27.77\00:43:30.11 that He's given us. 00:43:30.14\00:43:31.47 The lesson finishes out with a great point. 00:43:31.51\00:43:34.24 Actually, Pastor, you also mentioned this 00:43:34.28\00:43:35.81 from Mark 6:30. 00:43:35.84\00:43:37.68 The disciples had come back from this mission trip 00:43:37.71\00:43:41.35 where they had been, you know, 00:43:41.38\00:43:42.72 healing people and preaching the gospel. 00:43:42.75\00:43:44.35 But when you get to Mark 6:30-32, 00:43:44.39\00:43:47.59 it says, "Then the other apostles gathered to Jesus 00:43:47.62\00:43:49.56 and told Him all things, 00:43:49.59\00:43:51.49 both what they had done and what they had taught. 00:43:51.53\00:43:54.30 And He said to them, 'Come aside by yourselves 00:43:54.33\00:43:57.80 to a deserted place and rest a while.'" 00:43:57.83\00:44:02.90 What Jesus is doing 00:44:02.94\00:44:04.27 is they have just come back from... 00:44:04.31\00:44:05.64 They were on a spiritual mission, 00:44:05.67\00:44:07.31 they were carrying out the gospel mission. 00:44:07.34\00:44:09.11 But even when they came back, 00:44:09.14\00:44:10.48 even in their state of excitement and joy, Jesus, 00:44:10.51\00:44:12.91 come in, we want to tell you what happened. 00:44:12.95\00:44:14.48 Jesus stopped them and said, "Just hold on, you need, 00:44:14.52\00:44:17.79 you brothers need a break away to a deserted place, 00:44:17.82\00:44:19.85 a quiet place, and you just need to rest." 00:44:19.89\00:44:21.22 All right. 00:44:21.26\00:44:22.59 And I love what the lesson brings out at the very end. 00:44:22.62\00:44:24.76 And it asks the question here. 00:44:24.79\00:44:26.13 It says, what are ways of helping 00:44:26.16\00:44:28.26 and relieving your local church pastor 00:44:28.30\00:44:30.43 or elder, anyone who knows who can... 00:44:30.47\00:44:32.57 Anyone you know who can be burdened out 00:44:32.60\00:44:34.84 from doing the Lord's work? 00:44:34.87\00:44:36.27 What could you do to express your appreciation 00:44:36.30\00:44:38.61 and help this person find rest? 00:44:38.64\00:44:41.28 Even in God's work, 00:44:41.31\00:44:43.14 the busyness of ministry can often, 00:44:43.18\00:44:45.95 you know, I wouldn't say be a burden but certainly can 00:44:45.98\00:44:48.75 require a time once you break away 00:44:48.78\00:44:51.19 and you need some rest. 00:44:51.22\00:44:52.55 You need some time just to nefesh some, 00:44:52.59\00:44:55.42 ah, just to take in that rest and just, you know, 00:44:55.46\00:44:58.53 be able to rest from your labors. 00:44:58.56\00:45:00.16 And I love, I love what that lesson brought out there 00:45:00.20\00:45:03.13 is that oftentimes we need to think of ways 00:45:03.16\00:45:05.23 of how we can relieve our pastors. 00:45:05.27\00:45:06.60 What better way to do that 00:45:06.63\00:45:07.97 than to get involved in the mission ourselves. 00:45:08.00\00:45:10.37 The pastor shouldn't have to do it all. 00:45:10.41\00:45:12.07 We should become involved and be able to work together 00:45:12.11\00:45:14.51 collectively with him. 00:45:14.54\00:45:15.94 Amen. Boy, I'm gonna tell you what? 00:45:15.98\00:45:18.18 I know you both for saying, oh, I've got a theological, 00:45:18.21\00:45:21.42 that was fabulous. 00:45:21.45\00:45:22.78 Praise the Lord. I love both studies. 00:45:22.82\00:45:24.29 That was fabulous. 00:45:24.32\00:45:25.65 All right, we are going to return to the Book of Genesis. 00:45:25.69\00:45:30.03 Thursday's lesson is A Restless Wanderer. 00:45:30.06\00:45:34.83 And let's just look at Genesis Chapter 4. 00:45:34.86\00:45:38.97 We're going to kind of go through 1 through 12. 00:45:39.00\00:45:41.70 But let's just begin with verse 1. 00:45:41.74\00:45:43.41 Genesis 4:1, "Adam knew Eve his wife, 00:45:43.44\00:45:48.58 and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, 00:45:48.61\00:45:51.65 'I have acquired a man from the Lord.'" 00:45:51.68\00:45:54.88 Then she bore again, 00:45:54.92\00:45:57.69 this time, his brother, Abel. 00:45:57.72\00:46:01.42 Now, Abel was a keeper of sheep, 00:46:01.46\00:46:06.19 a keeper of sheep, a shepherd. 00:46:06.23\00:46:08.53 But Cain was a tiller of the ground, farmer. 00:46:08.56\00:46:14.50 Both are honorable vocations. 00:46:14.54\00:46:17.17 "And in the process of time, 00:46:17.21\00:46:19.37 it came to pass that Cain brought 00:46:19.41\00:46:22.24 an offering of the fruit of the ground. 00:46:22.28\00:46:26.35 So the older brother brings an offering 00:46:26.38\00:46:28.62 the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 00:46:28.65\00:46:30.99 Abel also brought, get this, 00:46:31.02\00:46:34.79 of the firstborn of his flock 00:46:34.82\00:46:39.83 and their fat. 00:46:39.86\00:46:42.66 And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, 00:46:42.70\00:46:45.67 but he did not respect Cain and his offering." 00:46:45.70\00:46:50.24 And Cain became very angry, his countenance fell. 00:46:50.27\00:46:55.38 When was the first sacrifice after creation? 00:46:55.41\00:46:59.98 It had to be when God slew, 00:47:00.02\00:47:02.18 had slain the animals to outfit 00:47:02.22\00:47:06.89 Adam and Eve to cover their nakedness. 00:47:06.92\00:47:10.96 But I believe with all of my heart, 00:47:10.99\00:47:13.46 that Adam and Eve understood 00:47:13.50\00:47:17.00 God's substitutionary plan of salvation. 00:47:17.03\00:47:20.70 You know, you said pastors will say, 00:47:20.74\00:47:22.34 "Oh, I don't see it in the New Testament." 00:47:22.37\00:47:24.51 Oh family of God, we're dividing the Bible. 00:47:24.54\00:47:29.31 It goes from Genesis to Revelation. 00:47:29.34\00:47:32.38 And I mean, even the New Testament 00:47:32.41\00:47:34.55 is just a continuation. 00:47:34.58\00:47:36.35 You can look in Luke 1:55 00:47:36.38\00:47:39.15 where Mary is saying in her song, 00:47:39.19\00:47:41.89 she's saying, oh, praise God. 00:47:41.92\00:47:43.49 He's remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 00:47:43.53\00:47:47.63 The new covenant, I mean, 00:47:47.66\00:47:49.00 the New Testament is merely a continuation. 00:47:49.03\00:47:53.17 And you know what makes me upset? 00:47:53.20\00:47:55.14 People will say, well, Genesis doesn't, 00:47:55.17\00:47:59.17 God didn't give the commandments in Genesis, 00:47:59.21\00:48:01.68 and you will see them all. 00:48:01.71\00:48:03.38 Let me tell you something, 00:48:03.41\00:48:04.81 do you realize that the Bible covers 00:48:04.85\00:48:06.75 about 4100 years of history. 00:48:06.78\00:48:09.38 You know how many years of history 00:48:09.42\00:48:12.02 the first 11 chapters of Genesis cover? 00:48:12.05\00:48:16.83 The first 11 chapters 00:48:16.86\00:48:20.93 cover 2000 years of history. 00:48:20.96\00:48:24.97 And then there's just a couple 100 more 00:48:25.00\00:48:27.80 in the other 39 chapters, 00:48:27.84\00:48:29.84 and it's weighted heavily on Abraham 00:48:29.87\00:48:32.97 and God's covenant. 00:48:33.01\00:48:34.41 So we've got between 2100 to 2300 years of history 00:48:34.44\00:48:38.91 in 50 chapters. 00:48:38.95\00:48:41.18 It's condensed, of course, 00:48:41.22\00:48:42.88 it doesn't have all of the details. 00:48:42.92\00:48:44.82 But I am convinced that God 00:48:44.85\00:48:48.09 had explained to them because this, 00:48:48.12\00:48:51.93 this whole knowledge of God was passed down verbally. 00:48:51.96\00:48:56.67 God explained 00:48:56.70\00:48:58.03 the substitutionary sacrifice system 00:48:58.07\00:49:00.17 we see in Genesis 3:15, 00:49:00.20\00:49:02.50 where he's talking about the seed of the woman 00:49:02.54\00:49:04.91 who's going to crush the Satan's head. 00:49:04.94\00:49:07.51 But you can see Noah, 00:49:07.54\00:49:09.34 God gave Noah instructions of clean 00:49:09.38\00:49:11.35 and unclean food before he got on the ark. 00:49:11.38\00:49:14.12 And you know what? 00:49:14.15\00:49:15.68 They weren't eating animals until after the floods, 00:49:15.72\00:49:18.89 but they took extra the clean 00:49:18.92\00:49:20.86 because they were for the sacrifices. 00:49:20.89\00:49:23.43 We see that Abraham when he split the sacrifices. 00:49:23.46\00:49:28.13 He followed God's instructions. 00:49:28.16\00:49:30.60 And when he took Isaac up, you know, Isaac is going, 00:49:30.63\00:49:33.64 "Well, dad, where's, 00:49:33.67\00:49:35.00 where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" 00:49:35.04\00:49:37.57 You know, I've got the wood on my shoulder. 00:49:37.61\00:49:40.58 He was a type of Christ. 00:49:40.61\00:49:42.58 He was carrying the wood on his shoulder, 00:49:42.61\00:49:46.41 and he, then God provided the sacrifice. 00:49:46.45\00:49:49.82 So it's clear that 00:49:49.85\00:49:51.19 the sacrificial system was in place in Exodus. 00:49:51.22\00:49:54.52 The Bible isn't perfectly clear 00:49:54.56\00:49:57.66 why God didn't accept or was happy with Abel, 00:49:57.69\00:50:03.53 but I believe, I mean, with Cain, I believe Cain knew. 00:50:03.57\00:50:08.14 See, the word respected in Genesis 4:4. 00:50:08.17\00:50:13.58 It can mean to investigate, 00:50:13.61\00:50:17.21 to consider carefully, to look closely. 00:50:17.25\00:50:20.98 So God was weighing not only the character, 00:50:21.02\00:50:25.25 but the attitude of Cain. 00:50:25.29\00:50:28.49 When Cain, who knew the substitutionary system, 00:50:28.52\00:50:33.53 he says, I want to worship the way I want. 00:50:33.56\00:50:37.27 He brings the fruit. 00:50:37.30\00:50:40.14 Now, I think Abel came humbly 00:50:40.17\00:50:44.74 before the Lord depending on Him totally, 00:50:44.77\00:50:47.64 because they knew that this sacrificial system. 00:50:47.68\00:50:51.75 So let me tell you, 00:50:51.78\00:50:53.11 Moses wrote Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, 00:50:53.15\00:50:56.08 Numbers and Deuteronomy, 00:50:56.12\00:50:57.45 don't even try to separate all of them 00:50:57.49\00:50:59.42 because the first writing of the Old Testament 00:50:59.45\00:51:03.53 was probably the book of the covenant, 00:51:03.56\00:51:06.36 and that God gave Moses on the mountain. 00:51:06.39\00:51:10.47 And then afterwards, Genesis, 00:51:10.50\00:51:12.67 the book of beginnings 00:51:12.70\00:51:14.04 was written as God gave this to him. 00:51:14.07\00:51:16.44 But now look at verse 4. 00:51:16.47\00:51:19.24 So what happens when Cain realizes that 00:51:19.27\00:51:24.35 God's not too thrilled with the way he's worshiping. 00:51:24.38\00:51:29.05 He gets angry. 00:51:29.08\00:51:30.42 And in verse 6, Genesis 4:6, 00:51:30.45\00:51:32.92 "The Lord said to Cain, 'Why are you angry? 00:51:32.95\00:51:36.56 Why has your countenance fallen? 00:51:36.59\00:51:38.83 If you do well, will you not be accepted? 00:51:38.86\00:51:42.10 And if you do not do well, 00:51:42.13\00:51:44.57 sin lies at the door. 00:51:44.60\00:51:48.47 And its desire is for you, 00:51:48.50\00:51:53.07 but you should rule over it.'" 00:51:53.11\00:51:57.05 I want you at home, you are driving in your car, 00:51:57.08\00:52:02.42 and all of us to remember, 00:52:02.45\00:52:04.65 sin is crouching at the door ready to pounce like a lion. 00:52:04.69\00:52:10.19 He's seeking whom he may devour. 00:52:10.23\00:52:12.79 But we are told by God 00:52:12.83\00:52:16.50 that we are to rule over sin 00:52:16.53\00:52:18.93 because He's gonna give us the power to overrule. 00:52:18.97\00:52:23.10 Genesis 4:8, "Cain talked with Abel his brother, 00:52:23.14\00:52:28.24 and it came to pass, 00:52:28.28\00:52:30.08 when they were in the field, that Cain rose up 00:52:30.11\00:52:34.88 against Abel his brother and killed him." 00:52:34.92\00:52:37.42 Hey, this seems to be premeditated murder. 00:52:37.45\00:52:40.16 He calls Abel out to the field where there's nobody 00:52:40.19\00:52:43.06 that's going to witness this. 00:52:43.09\00:52:44.96 And this is the first death of a human being 00:52:44.99\00:52:47.60 recorded in Scripture. 00:52:47.63\00:52:50.47 Genesis 4:9, "Then the Lord said to Cain, 00:52:50.50\00:52:54.00 'Where is Abel your brother?'" 00:52:54.04\00:52:55.90 Why is God asking this, He knows. 00:52:55.94\00:52:58.94 And here's what Cain says? 00:52:58.97\00:53:01.54 He says, "I don't know. 00:53:01.58\00:53:04.48 Am I my brother's keeper?" 00:53:04.51\00:53:07.25 That is a sarcastic response. 00:53:07.28\00:53:09.98 He was a keeper of the sheep. Abel was. 00:53:10.02\00:53:14.16 So now Cain is just really being, 00:53:14.19\00:53:17.69 he harbored this awful attitude, 00:53:17.73\00:53:20.50 but now it's a sarcastic playing on words. 00:53:20.53\00:53:23.63 Am I my brother's keeper? 00:53:23.67\00:53:26.03 And, you know, you know 00:53:26.07\00:53:28.90 what the Bible's answer to Cain's question is? 00:53:28.94\00:53:32.31 You betcha, you are. 00:53:32.34\00:53:34.44 Leviticus 19:18, "You shall not take vengeance, 00:53:34.48\00:53:37.15 nor bear any grudge 00:53:37.18\00:53:38.51 against the children of your God, 00:53:38.55\00:53:40.18 but you shall love your neighbor as yourself." 00:53:40.22\00:53:43.52 And Jesus repeated that verbatim. 00:53:43.55\00:53:46.52 Verse 10, and he said, this is God speaking, 00:53:46.55\00:53:50.46 Genesis 4:10, "What have you done? 00:53:50.49\00:53:53.80 The voice of your brother's blood 00:53:53.83\00:53:55.40 cries out to Me from the ground." 00:53:55.43\00:53:57.30 This is a figurative speech to show that Abel's death 00:53:57.33\00:54:00.04 was known to God. 00:54:00.07\00:54:01.44 "So now you are cursed from the earth, 00:54:01.47\00:54:03.81 which has opened its mouth to receive 00:54:03.84\00:54:05.51 your brother's blood from your hand. 00:54:05.54\00:54:07.48 And when you till the ground, 00:54:07.51\00:54:09.44 it shall no longer yield its strength to you. 00:54:09.48\00:54:12.18 A fugitive and a vagabond 00:54:12.21\00:54:15.05 you shall be on the earth." 00:54:15.08\00:54:18.45 Cain's punishment destroyed his livelihood as a farmer. 00:54:18.49\00:54:23.43 It turned him into a restless wanderer. 00:54:23.46\00:54:28.16 You know what the consequences of sin are? 00:54:28.20\00:54:31.53 It separates us from the presence of God. 00:54:31.57\00:54:35.70 And let me tell you something? 00:54:35.74\00:54:37.07 When you are separated from the presence of God, 00:54:37.11\00:54:39.27 you can find no rest. 00:54:39.31\00:54:41.31 That's right. I mean, we just... 00:54:41.34\00:54:44.05 So Cain actually started the city, 00:54:44.08\00:54:46.92 to build the dynasty, but God wasn't needed. 00:54:46.95\00:54:49.78 God has put eternity in our hearts, 00:54:49.82\00:54:52.45 and you can try to fill 00:54:52.49\00:54:53.86 that hole in you with everything, 00:54:53.89\00:54:56.59 but until you learn to rest in God. 00:54:56.62\00:55:01.43 Come before Him and spend that intimate time, 00:55:01.46\00:55:05.10 you will never find rest for yourself. 00:55:05.13\00:55:10.61 Thank you, Shelley. Thank you, Ryan. 00:55:10.64\00:55:11.97 Thank you, Jill. Thank you, Pastor Kenny. 00:55:12.01\00:55:14.38 Give you a few moments here to wrap up your day? 00:55:14.41\00:55:17.15 Well, I think this little quote that I have is 00:55:17.18\00:55:19.41 from the Ministry of Healing, 476. 00:55:19.45\00:55:21.55 And I just pay special attention 00:55:21.58\00:55:23.45 because just a few lines, 00:55:23.49\00:55:24.82 but it says, every man, so that's all of us, 00:55:24.85\00:55:26.82 has his place in eternal plan of heaven. 00:55:26.86\00:55:30.39 Whether we fill that place depends upon our faithfulness, 00:55:30.43\00:55:35.33 in cooperating with God. 00:55:35.36\00:55:37.47 Be sure we cooperate with God, will have that place in heaven. 00:55:37.50\00:55:40.47 Amen. I want to read Matthew 11:28. 00:55:40.50\00:55:43.20 We've referenced it several times this week. 00:55:43.24\00:55:45.11 But I love this scripture. 00:55:45.14\00:55:46.47 Jesus speaking, He's speaking to you right now. 00:55:46.51\00:55:48.78 "Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, 00:55:48.81\00:55:53.52 and I will give you rest." 00:55:53.55\00:55:55.82 Do you want rest? 00:55:55.85\00:55:57.22 Do you want to experience peace with Jesus? 00:55:57.25\00:56:00.42 Come to Him just now, and He will give that to you. 00:56:00.46\00:56:03.83 Amen. Amen. 00:56:03.86\00:56:05.46 One of the scriptures I read from Mark 6:31, 00:56:05.49\00:56:09.03 actually it says, "Jesus says to them, 00:56:09.06\00:56:10.57 'Come aside by yourselves 00:56:10.60\00:56:12.63 to a deserted place and rest a while.'" 00:56:12.67\00:56:15.00 Sometimes we just got to get away. 00:56:15.04\00:56:16.97 Sometimes we just got to set aside 00:56:17.01\00:56:18.44 some time just break away us and the Lord. 00:56:18.47\00:56:21.41 And Jesus promises, as we have seen 00:56:21.44\00:56:23.61 that He will give us rest. 00:56:23.65\00:56:24.98 Amen. Shelley? 00:56:25.01\00:56:26.35 When I was young, I got some bad teaching 00:56:26.38\00:56:29.58 from the pulpit in the church, 00:56:29.62\00:56:31.32 the denomination I used to belong to. 00:56:31.35\00:56:33.79 And I got mad at God, 00:56:33.82\00:56:35.16 I shook my fist in His face, and I ran away. 00:56:35.19\00:56:38.79 And I was restless for a couple of years, actually. 00:56:38.83\00:56:42.50 But God chased me down with His love and brought me back. 00:56:42.53\00:56:45.57 You cannot run from the presence of God 00:56:45.60\00:56:48.10 and be at rest. 00:56:48.14\00:56:49.47 Good. Amen. 00:56:49.50\00:56:50.84 Well, thank you so much for all the covering up. 00:56:50.87\00:56:52.84 We're just getting started by the way 00:56:52.87\00:56:54.71 as the quarter is rest in Christ. 00:56:54.74\00:56:56.98 And all the lessons we seek to present 00:56:57.01\00:56:59.85 is centered in Christ and His Word. 00:56:59.88\00:57:02.42 And truly the advice, take the advice that 00:57:02.45\00:57:04.45 you've been given here today, and you can find rest. 00:57:04.49\00:57:06.89 I like the six points a lady by the name of Germany Kent, 00:57:06.92\00:57:09.99 she pointed out six ways we can find rest for our minds, 00:57:10.03\00:57:13.80 stop stressing, stop worrying, 00:57:13.83\00:57:17.00 give rest to the problems weighing you down, 00:57:17.03\00:57:21.14 lighten up, forgive yourself, and also forgive others. 00:57:21.17\00:57:25.61 Don't allow the things of the world 00:57:25.64\00:57:27.28 to sap the rest that God intends for you to have. 00:57:27.31\00:57:30.28 So my advice to you is Hebrews 4:11, 00:57:30.31\00:57:34.12 beautifully said, "Let us therefore 00:57:34.15\00:57:36.38 be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall 00:57:36.42\00:57:41.02 according to the same example of disobedience." 00:57:41.06\00:57:44.06 Did you know that refusing to rest in Christ 00:57:44.09\00:57:46.49 is a sign of disobedience to Christ? 00:57:46.53\00:57:49.06 Well, don't be disobedient. 00:57:49.10\00:57:50.70 And don't forget to join us 00:57:50.73\00:57:52.07 next quarter for lesson number two, 00:57:52.10\00:57:54.10 Restless and Rebellious. 00:57:54.14\00:57:56.14 God bless you until we see you then. 00:57:56.17\00:57:58.37
