Let's pray. 00:03:06.41\00:03:08.38 Father in heaven, 00:03:08.42\00:03:09.75 we just pray right now for Your Holy Spirit 00:03:09.78\00:03:11.65 to join us as we are opening Your Word. 00:03:11.69\00:03:14.89 Lord, what a privilege it is to study the Word of God, 00:03:14.92\00:03:18.56 and Father as we study today on the sign of the covenant, 00:03:18.59\00:03:21.93 Lord, we just pray that 00:03:21.96\00:03:23.30 You would open our minds and hearts 00:03:23.33\00:03:25.43 to the word that you have for us today. 00:03:25.47\00:03:26.94 And in Jesus' name we pray. 00:03:26.97\00:03:28.44 Amen. Amen. 00:03:28.47\00:03:30.31 Praise the Lord. 00:03:30.34\00:03:31.94 Our memory verse kind of says it all. 00:03:31.97\00:03:34.48 Exodus 31:16, beautiful text. 00:03:34.51\00:03:38.38 Again, that's Exodus 31:16. 00:03:38.41\00:03:41.15 And the Bible says, 00:03:41.18\00:03:42.65 "Wherefore the children of Israel 00:03:42.68\00:03:44.15 shall keep the Sabbath, 00:03:44.19\00:03:46.35 to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations 00:03:46.39\00:03:49.79 for a perpetual covenant." 00:03:49.82\00:03:52.46 I love that perpetual covenant continually. 00:03:52.49\00:03:55.56 God says, I want to bestow 00:03:55.60\00:03:57.07 the blessing of the Sabbath upon you. 00:03:57.10\00:03:59.33 And indeed, if we are a covenant people 00:03:59.37\00:04:01.20 in covenant relationship with the Lord, 00:04:01.24\00:04:03.30 then we shall want to keep all of God's commandments, 00:04:03.34\00:04:06.07 including the Sabbath commandment. 00:04:06.11\00:04:08.48 I like how Sabbath afternoon is set up. 00:04:08.51\00:04:10.71 I'm going to read what's there 00:04:10.75\00:04:12.08 because I thought it had a nice little introduction 00:04:12.11\00:04:14.45 to what we're talking about this week. 00:04:14.48\00:04:15.82 It says, 00:04:15.85\00:04:17.19 "The seventh day Sabbath is like a nail that whack 00:04:17.22\00:04:21.32 with unbroken regularity returns us each week 00:04:21.36\00:04:24.86 to the foundation of all that we are or could be. 00:04:24.89\00:04:29.00 We are so busy running to and fro, 00:04:29.03\00:04:31.07 spending money, making money, 00:04:31.10\00:04:33.20 going here, going there, going everywhere, 00:04:33.23\00:04:36.00 and then whack 00:04:36.04\00:04:38.24 Sabbath comes 00:04:38.27\00:04:39.61 and reattaches us to our foundation, 00:04:39.64\00:04:41.84 the starting point of everything that follows 00:04:41.88\00:04:44.88 because everything that is anything to us 00:04:44.91\00:04:47.38 becomes that only 00:04:47.42\00:04:48.95 because God created it, and us to begin with. 00:04:48.98\00:04:53.25 With unceasing regularity and with no exceptions, 00:04:53.29\00:04:56.59 the Sabbath silently hurls over the horizon 00:04:56.62\00:04:59.89 and into every crack and cranny of our lives. 00:04:59.93\00:05:02.90 It reminds us that every crack and cranny belong to our maker, 00:05:02.93\00:05:07.80 the one who puts us here, 00:05:07.84\00:05:09.64 the one who in the beginning 00:05:09.67\00:05:11.84 created the heavens and the earth, 00:05:11.87\00:05:14.68 an act that remains the irrefutable foundation 00:05:14.71\00:05:18.01 of all Christian belief 00:05:18.05\00:05:19.71 and of which the seventh day Sabbath. 00:05:19.75\00:05:22.42 Whack is the unrefutable, 00:05:22.45\00:05:25.15 unobtrusive and unyielding sign." 00:05:25.19\00:05:28.22 I thought that was a nice 00:05:28.26\00:05:29.59 and I liked the little whacks in there. 00:05:29.62\00:05:30.96 Yeah. 00:05:30.99\00:05:32.33 It's really, really nice to know 00:05:32.36\00:05:33.70 that the Sabbath is something that's foundational. 00:05:33.73\00:05:35.66 It's something that God created in the very beginning. 00:05:35.70\00:05:38.30 In fact, that's what we're going to start 00:05:38.33\00:05:39.67 with this week, 00:05:39.70\00:05:41.04 as we dive into Sunday's lesson entitled, Origins. 00:05:41.07\00:05:44.21 Because when you go back to the origins, 00:05:44.24\00:05:45.97 that's exactly what Genesis means. 00:05:46.01\00:05:47.91 It means origins or beginning. 00:05:47.94\00:05:49.31 And when you go back 00:05:49.34\00:05:50.68 and you read the beginning story 00:05:50.71\00:05:52.21 of what is happening there in the Garden of Eden, 00:05:52.25\00:05:54.55 as God has created, He has created the world, 00:05:54.58\00:05:56.72 He's created everything. 00:05:56.75\00:05:58.09 Now He's in the Garden of Eden. 00:05:58.12\00:05:59.45 On the sixth day, He creates man, 00:05:59.49\00:06:01.36 and He looks back at everything that He's created. 00:06:01.39\00:06:03.39 And He says, "It's very good," right? 00:06:03.43\00:06:06.73 But then we go on to Genesis 2:1-3. 00:06:06.76\00:06:10.80 And notice what the Bible says. 00:06:10.83\00:06:12.37 It says, 00:06:12.40\00:06:13.74 "Thus the heavens and the earth, 00:06:13.77\00:06:15.57 and all the host of them were finished. 00:06:15.60\00:06:17.57 And on the seventh day, God ended His work 00:06:17.61\00:06:20.71 which He had done, 00:06:20.74\00:06:22.08 and He rested on the seventh day 00:06:22.11\00:06:23.55 from all His work which He had done. 00:06:23.58\00:06:26.72 And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it 00:06:26.75\00:06:30.12 because in it, He rested from all His work 00:06:30.15\00:06:34.22 which God had created and made." 00:06:34.26\00:06:38.53 So we see there very clearly 00:06:38.56\00:06:40.70 that the Sabbath was established 00:06:40.73\00:06:43.87 in the Garden of Eden. 00:06:43.90\00:06:45.23 Now, there's somebody right now 00:06:45.27\00:06:46.60 that's probably watching are going to, 00:06:46.63\00:06:48.00 you know, hear what I'm saying, 00:06:48.04\00:06:49.40 you know, and I don't know Ryan, doesn't say that, 00:06:49.44\00:06:51.61 doesn't actually say Sabbath, right? 00:06:51.64\00:06:52.97 It says He just rested. 00:06:53.01\00:06:54.54 But there's no doubt about it 00:06:54.58\00:06:56.04 that as you do an important, 00:06:56.08\00:06:58.61 responsible study of God's Word, 00:06:58.65\00:07:00.28 you find that right there, 00:07:00.32\00:07:01.65 even in the original language 00:07:01.68\00:07:03.39 when it says He rested. 00:07:03.42\00:07:04.75 It says that He Shabbat, He rested, 00:07:04.79\00:07:07.46 He ceased from all of His work, 00:07:07.49\00:07:09.16 which is where we get our word Shabbat 00:07:09.19\00:07:11.36 is from Sabbath, right? 00:07:11.39\00:07:12.73 So we know that God did indeed Sabbath, 00:07:12.76\00:07:14.76 He created this Sabbath, 00:07:14.80\00:07:16.13 He rested on the Sabbath from all that He made. 00:07:16.16\00:07:18.83 And the point that I just made 00:07:18.87\00:07:20.20 even people from outside 00:07:20.24\00:07:22.14 the Seventh-day Adventist faith, 00:07:22.17\00:07:23.64 they get this point. 00:07:23.67\00:07:25.01 For instance, Zondervan, 00:07:25.04\00:07:26.44 the Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible, 00:07:26.47\00:07:29.64 of course, which you know Zondervan. 00:07:29.68\00:07:31.35 Zondervan is a religious publishing company, 00:07:31.38\00:07:34.12 and they write this in the volume five, 00:07:34.15\00:07:36.75 page 183 of the Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible. 00:07:36.79\00:07:39.62 They say, 00:07:39.65\00:07:40.99 "The word Sabbath is not employed in, 00:07:41.02\00:07:44.39 of course, Genesis 2:2-3, 00:07:44.43\00:07:46.19 it says, but in it, it is certain 00:07:46.23\00:07:48.73 that the author meant to assert 00:07:48.76\00:07:51.37 that God blessed and hallowed the seventh day as the Sabbath. 00:07:51.40\00:07:55.04 So even Zondervan, 00:07:55.07\00:07:56.40 which is a non Seventh-day Adventist Publishing Group, 00:07:56.44\00:07:58.44 they get it, 00:07:58.47\00:07:59.81 they've published this statement 00:07:59.84\00:08:01.28 saying that it's very clear 00:08:01.31\00:08:03.14 that right there in Genesis 2:2-3 00:08:03.18\00:08:06.05 where God rested, He blessed, 00:08:06.08\00:08:07.55 and He made holy this seventh day. 00:08:07.58\00:08:09.72 It is no doubt talking about the Sabbath of the Lord. 00:08:09.75\00:08:13.56 And, of course, there's many people that say, 00:08:13.59\00:08:14.92 well, the Sabbath didn't come along until you know, 00:08:14.96\00:08:17.73 Mount Sinai there when God gave the Ten Commandment law. 00:08:17.76\00:08:20.60 And that was really the origin of the Sabbath. 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.86 Before that no one really ever kept the Sabbath holy. 00:08:22.90\00:08:25.73 Well, we know that there are several texts 00:08:25.77\00:08:27.54 that indicate pre Mount Sinai that God had faithful servants 00:08:27.57\00:08:31.71 who kept all of His commandments. 00:08:31.74\00:08:33.07 I think of Abraham. 00:08:33.11\00:08:34.44 We've read several texts already, 00:08:34.48\00:08:35.81 where it said that he kept God's commandments. 00:08:35.84\00:08:37.25 I don't think he just kept nine of them, right? 00:08:37.28\00:08:39.08 I believe he kept the entire law. 00:08:39.11\00:08:40.98 We've even learned that 00:08:41.02\00:08:42.45 the law of God 00:08:42.48\00:08:43.82 is God's governing law in heaven. 00:08:43.85\00:08:46.12 Lucifer rebelled from that law. 00:08:46.15\00:08:47.99 And it says that iniquity was found in him, 00:08:48.02\00:08:50.99 which means he had to, as the Bible says, 00:08:51.03\00:08:53.03 sin is transgression of the law. 00:08:53.06\00:08:54.83 What law did he violate? 00:08:54.86\00:08:56.20 He violated the law of God, 00:08:56.23\00:08:57.57 the Ten Commandment law of God which is in heaven. 00:08:57.60\00:08:59.47 So there's clear evidence 00:08:59.50\00:09:00.84 that the law of God 00:09:00.87\00:09:02.20 all 10 of God's commandments existed in heaven. 00:09:02.24\00:09:05.84 And right here in Exodus Chapter 16, 00:09:05.87\00:09:07.61 we see very clearly 00:09:07.64\00:09:08.98 that God is reintroducing to the children of Israel, 00:09:09.01\00:09:12.88 this concept of Sabbath and why is that? 00:09:12.91\00:09:15.05 Not because they would have never heard of it, 00:09:15.08\00:09:16.99 not because it's something 00:09:17.02\00:09:18.35 that would have been new to them 00:09:18.39\00:09:19.72 that they've never been experienced 00:09:19.75\00:09:21.09 or never have been maybe told about 00:09:21.12\00:09:22.89 or informed about. 00:09:22.92\00:09:24.26 But they've been in 400 years of Egyptian captivity, 00:09:24.29\00:09:27.70 where the Egyptians have these brothers and sisters 00:09:27.73\00:09:30.10 working day and night, 24/7, or at least seven days a week 00:09:30.13\00:09:33.80 and they weren't really getting a Sabbath rest. 00:09:33.84\00:09:36.07 And so by the time they get out in the wilderness, 00:09:36.10\00:09:38.14 God's brought them out of Egypt. 00:09:38.17\00:09:40.18 Right there in Exodus Chapter 16, 00:09:40.21\00:09:42.21 beginning with verse 4. 00:09:42.24\00:09:43.58 Notice what the Bible says. 00:09:43.61\00:09:44.95 It says, "And the Lord said to Moses, 00:09:44.98\00:09:46.31 'Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. 00:09:46.35\00:09:49.58 And the people shall go out 00:09:49.62\00:09:50.95 and gather a certain quota every day 00:09:50.99\00:09:53.46 that I may test them, 00:09:53.49\00:09:54.99 notice this, 00:09:55.02\00:09:56.36 whether they will walk in My law or not." 00:09:56.39\00:09:59.23 And then he says there in verse 26, notice, 00:09:59.26\00:10:01.73 "Six days you shall gather it, 00:10:01.76\00:10:04.10 but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, 00:10:04.13\00:10:06.87 there will be none, 00:10:06.90\00:10:08.87 or there will be no gathering on the Sabbath." 00:10:08.90\00:10:11.07 So it's interesting how God brings us about. 00:10:11.11\00:10:13.24 He doesn't say the Sabbath pause button. 00:10:13.27\00:10:15.94 Oh, you don't know about that. 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.35 Let me tell you about it. 00:10:17.38\00:10:18.71 Let me explain to you what the Sabbath is. 00:10:18.75\00:10:20.08 He's very much giving it to them 00:10:20.12\00:10:21.45 as they've heard of it. 00:10:21.48\00:10:22.82 They know what this Sabbath rest is. 00:10:22.85\00:10:24.42 They've just, 00:10:24.45\00:10:25.79 they're generations and generations 00:10:25.82\00:10:27.16 away from people who used to keep it, 00:10:27.19\00:10:28.76 but they haven't been able to keep the Sabbath in Egypt. 00:10:28.79\00:10:30.43 God says, 00:10:30.46\00:10:31.79 "Look, I'm gonna reintroduce the Sabbath to you 00:10:31.83\00:10:33.70 and tell you what it's all about." 00:10:33.73\00:10:35.06 Keep in mind, 00:10:35.10\00:10:36.43 they've been out in the wilderness 00:10:36.46\00:10:37.80 whining and complaining, 00:10:37.83\00:10:39.17 and we're hungry, and we're thirsty. 00:10:39.20\00:10:41.00 And God's brought us out here to die in the wilderness. 00:10:41.04\00:10:43.10 And so the Lord says, 00:10:43.14\00:10:44.47 "Look, I'm going to take care of you. 00:10:44.51\00:10:45.84 But I'm also going to test you 00:10:45.87\00:10:47.31 to see if you will honor and keep My law or not. 00:10:47.34\00:10:50.28 And so, if you go into verse 27, 00:10:50.31\00:10:52.01 again, we're in Exodus 16, still, 00:10:52.05\00:10:54.02 verse 27, it says, 00:10:54.05\00:10:55.38 "Now it happened that 00:10:55.42\00:10:56.75 some of the people went out on the seventh day 00:10:56.79\00:10:58.55 to gather but they found none. 00:10:58.59\00:11:01.76 And the Lord said to Moses, 00:11:01.79\00:11:03.12 'How long do you refuse to keep My," what? 00:11:03.16\00:11:06.80 "My commandments and my laws?" 00:11:06.83\00:11:08.16 Wait a second, do we have Ten commandments 00:11:08.20\00:11:09.63 at this point yet? 00:11:09.66\00:11:11.23 All right, so the Ten Commandments 00:11:11.27\00:11:12.70 have not been formally given to the children of Israel 00:11:12.73\00:11:15.87 in document form, or verbally said aloud, 00:11:15.90\00:11:18.17 but would they have been aware of these commandments 00:11:18.21\00:11:21.61 from perhaps Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, 00:11:21.64\00:11:24.45 and the stories that had been told to them 00:11:24.48\00:11:25.95 of their traditional religious experience with God, 00:11:25.98\00:11:28.95 the God of their fathers? 00:11:28.98\00:11:30.32 Absolutely. 00:11:30.35\00:11:31.69 And so God says, 00:11:31.72\00:11:33.05 "Look, you're not keeping My commandments, and My laws." 00:11:33.09\00:11:34.42 And then verse 29, 00:11:34.46\00:11:35.79 "See! For the Lord has given you the Sabbath, 00:11:35.82\00:11:38.46 therefore He gives you on the sixth day 00:11:38.49\00:11:41.06 bread for two days. 00:11:41.10\00:11:42.43 Let every man remain in his place, 00:11:42.46\00:11:43.97 let no man go out of his place on the seventh day." 00:11:44.00\00:11:46.74 So the people, there it is, rested. 00:11:46.77\00:11:49.20 They Shabbat 00:11:49.24\00:11:50.57 just like the Lord did in the beginning, 00:11:50.61\00:11:52.51 just like he did in Genesis 2, 00:11:52.54\00:11:54.11 they Shabbat, they rested, 00:11:54.14\00:11:55.64 they ceased from their labors on the seventh day. 00:11:55.68\00:11:58.81 And you know what? 00:11:58.85\00:12:00.18 There's no doubt, 00:12:00.22\00:12:01.55 there's no doubt as to where this Sabbath finds its origin. 00:12:01.58\00:12:05.72 Because there's no other place clear 00:12:05.75\00:12:07.39 then when you get one, few chapters over, 00:12:07.42\00:12:09.56 we're in Exodus 16 now, 00:12:09.59\00:12:11.23 but if you go to Exodus 20, 00:12:11.26\00:12:12.59 where God verbally tells them and gives them 00:12:12.63\00:12:15.16 for the first time as a nation, 00:12:15.20\00:12:17.13 this Ten Commandment law 00:12:17.17\00:12:18.80 right there and beginning in verse 8, 00:12:18.83\00:12:20.67 He introduces 00:12:20.70\00:12:22.04 this Sabbath commandment to them 00:12:22.07\00:12:23.51 in a formal way. 00:12:23.54\00:12:24.87 And it says here and verse, 00:12:24.91\00:12:26.24 verse, starting with verse 8 of Exodus Chapter 20, 00:12:26.27\00:12:28.94 "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy." 00:12:28.98\00:12:31.55 There's the commandment. 00:12:31.58\00:12:32.91 You ought to remember it, you are to keep it holy. 00:12:32.95\00:12:34.45 And then verses 9 through 10. 00:12:34.48\00:12:36.38 He tells you how you keep the Sabbath. 00:12:36.42\00:12:38.62 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 00:12:38.65\00:12:40.66 but the seventh day 00:12:40.69\00:12:42.02 is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. 00:12:42.06\00:12:43.79 In it, you shall not do any work, 00:12:43.83\00:12:45.83 nor your son, nor your daughter, 00:12:45.86\00:12:47.20 nor your male servant, nor your female servant, 00:12:47.23\00:12:48.66 nor your cattle, nor your stranger 00:12:48.70\00:12:50.13 that is within your gates." 00:12:50.17\00:12:51.67 And then you get to verse 11. 00:12:51.70\00:12:53.13 Are you wondering where the Sabbath is? 00:12:53.17\00:12:55.00 Are you wondering where it comes from, 00:12:55.04\00:12:56.60 where its origin is? 00:12:56.64\00:12:57.97 Well, God doesn't leave anything out. 00:12:58.01\00:12:59.37 Right there in verse 11, 00:12:59.41\00:13:00.74 He points us back to the origin of the Sabbath. 00:13:00.78\00:13:02.81 Why are we to keep the Sabbath? 00:13:02.84\00:13:04.41 Why are we to remember it and keep it holy? 00:13:04.45\00:13:07.05 God Himself says, 00:13:07.08\00:13:08.52 "For in six days, 00:13:08.55\00:13:09.88 the Lord made the heavens 00:13:09.92\00:13:12.72 and the earth, the sea, and all that in them 00:13:12.75\00:13:14.32 is and He rested the seventh day, 00:13:14.36\00:13:17.06 therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day 00:13:17.09\00:13:19.39 and hallowed it." 00:13:19.43\00:13:20.76 You know, God created the Sabbath for all humanity, 00:13:20.80\00:13:23.10 not just for the Jews, 00:13:23.13\00:13:24.73 and there's no scripture in all the Bible that says 00:13:24.77\00:13:27.90 that the Sabbath is just for the Jews 00:13:27.94\00:13:29.27 or that it's a Jewish Sabbath. 00:13:29.30\00:13:30.64 That's a myth. 00:13:30.67\00:13:32.01 The Bible clearly says, 00:13:32.04\00:13:33.38 as we find there in Mark 2: 27-28, 00:13:33.41\00:13:36.24 Jesus Himself, the one who created the Sabbath, 00:13:36.28\00:13:38.95 the one who spoke the worlds into existence, 00:13:38.98\00:13:41.02 our very wonderful Creator Himself said, 00:13:41.05\00:13:43.02 the Sabbath was made for man 00:13:43.05\00:13:45.35 and not man for the Sabbath. 00:13:45.39\00:13:47.06 That word there in the Greek is anthropos 00:13:47.09\00:13:49.32 which means for all mankind, He created the Sabbath. 00:13:49.36\00:13:53.03 And I love this beautifully, because Jesus didn't actually, 00:13:53.06\00:13:57.73 you know, He kept the Sabbath first before Adam and Eve, 00:13:57.77\00:14:00.47 their very first full day with Him 00:14:00.50\00:14:02.40 was to spend in communion with Him on the Sabbath, 00:14:02.44\00:14:04.97 but they wouldn't actually keep their first Sabbath 00:14:05.01\00:14:06.88 until a week later. 00:14:06.91\00:14:08.24 Because remember what the prerequisite is, 00:14:08.28\00:14:10.55 for keeping Sabbath? 00:14:10.58\00:14:11.91 You have to work for six days. 00:14:11.95\00:14:13.75 Had Adam and Eve labored for six days yet? 00:14:13.78\00:14:15.78 No, they hadn't. 00:14:15.82\00:14:17.15 But we know that 00:14:17.19\00:14:18.52 they kept that first Sabbath with Christ observing, 00:14:18.55\00:14:20.76 and then later they would keep their very first Sabbath 00:14:20.79\00:14:23.22 with the Lord. 00:14:23.26\00:14:24.59 We see its origin in Genesis, 00:14:24.63\00:14:25.96 and we can be sure today 00:14:25.99\00:14:27.33 that the Lord Sabbath 00:14:27.36\00:14:28.70 is still intact for all generations 00:14:28.73\00:14:30.37 as a part of the covenant. 00:14:30.40\00:14:32.53 Oh, well, thank you, Ryan. 00:14:32.57\00:14:34.64 You covered my Sabbath School lesson for me, 00:14:34.67\00:14:38.61 is our Sabbath before Sinai. 00:14:38.64\00:14:41.18 So I'm going to go on a little different direction 00:14:41.21\00:14:43.21 as we go to Monday, Sabbath before Sinai. 00:14:43.24\00:14:46.48 Let's go to Exodus 16, 00:14:46.51\00:14:48.58 because that's the foundation that primarily was laid. 00:14:48.62\00:14:52.45 And the writer wanted us to bring that out 00:14:52.49\00:14:55.26 that the Sabbath was in existence before Sinai. 00:14:55.29\00:14:59.49 Now according to what Ryan just read, 00:14:59.53\00:15:01.63 the test of the Sabbath was, in fact, God's provision. 00:15:01.66\00:15:06.07 And one of the things I want to point out is, 00:15:06.10\00:15:08.40 if we would stop trying to provide for ourselves, 00:15:08.44\00:15:12.31 we would see that God can provide for us. 00:15:12.34\00:15:15.44 The Sabbath has been boiled down to a day 00:15:15.48\00:15:18.45 where many stores open 00:15:18.48\00:15:19.81 and provide their major sales on those days. 00:15:19.85\00:15:22.85 I remember a Macy's white flower day sales 00:15:22.88\00:15:25.35 was always on the Sabbath. 00:15:25.39\00:15:27.02 A lot of sales began sunset Friday 00:15:27.06\00:15:29.92 and ended like 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, 00:15:29.96\00:15:32.73 and I remember being pushed 00:15:32.76\00:15:34.23 in the category where items were sold, 00:15:34.26\00:15:36.83 and they said, well, it doesn't go on sale 00:15:36.87\00:15:38.20 till Friday night 00:15:38.23\00:15:39.57 and the sale ends at 2 o'clock on Saturday. 00:15:39.60\00:15:41.90 And I actually got into a very respectful debate 00:15:41.94\00:15:47.08 with the salesperson and I said, 00:15:47.11\00:15:50.18 "Well, I go to church on the Sabbath." 00:15:50.21\00:15:52.38 They said, "No, it's on Saturday." 00:15:52.41\00:15:53.75 I said, "But that's the Sabbath and I won't be able to be here. 00:15:53.78\00:15:57.29 So are you saying to Seventh-day Adventists 00:15:57.32\00:15:58.95 and to the entire Jewish world 00:15:58.99\00:16:00.32 that they don't have right to partake in this sales." 00:16:00.36\00:16:03.32 And they said, 00:16:03.36\00:16:04.69 "Well, I never thought about it that way." 00:16:04.73\00:16:06.06 And they went and spoke to their manager 00:16:06.09\00:16:07.43 and came by they said, 00:16:07.46\00:16:08.80 "Hey, manager said you can have the sales price." 00:16:08.83\00:16:10.50 We need to stand up and recognize 00:16:10.53\00:16:11.93 the Sabbath as a fact of God, not as a just a day itself. 00:16:11.97\00:16:16.60 And so when we talk about the Sabbath, 00:16:16.64\00:16:18.77 many people boil it down to the day. 00:16:18.81\00:16:21.81 But it's not about the day, it is about the Lord. 00:16:21.84\00:16:26.28 Anymore than May 22 is about the day, 00:16:26.31\00:16:29.82 it's about my wife and me, that's our anniversary. 00:16:29.85\00:16:32.35 So it may be nothing to you. 00:16:32.39\00:16:34.26 But when it becomes a sign, 00:16:34.29\00:16:37.33 where two people are united together 00:16:37.36\00:16:39.49 in a blessed relationship, 00:16:39.53\00:16:41.53 which is in fact, what the Sabbath is, 00:16:41.56\00:16:43.43 God uniting with His people 00:16:43.47\00:16:45.90 in a blessed and sanctified relationship, 00:16:45.93\00:16:49.57 then the day means something different. 00:16:49.60\00:16:51.87 Now, let me go a step further on that. 00:16:51.91\00:16:53.88 Can I change the day my wife and I were married on? 00:16:53.91\00:16:56.75 No. 00:16:56.78\00:16:58.48 Let me go a step farther. 00:16:58.51\00:17:01.42 Now I am never, and my wife and I made this decree, 00:17:01.45\00:17:04.72 if anything happened to her or me, 00:17:04.75\00:17:06.39 I'm not getting remarried. 00:17:06.42\00:17:07.76 I want one wife in heaven. That's the bottom line. 00:17:07.79\00:17:09.76 I got the best one now. 00:17:09.79\00:17:11.13 And if anything happened to her, 00:17:11.16\00:17:12.49 I'm waiting to heaven 00:17:12.53\00:17:13.86 so we can continue our relationship. 00:17:13.90\00:17:15.23 But here's the point. 00:17:15.26\00:17:16.60 People that got married a second time, 00:17:16.63\00:17:17.97 let's use the example, 00:17:18.00\00:17:19.33 say a guy just get married a second time, 00:17:19.37\00:17:20.70 which is not an unusual thing in our world. 00:17:20.74\00:17:23.17 And he's been honoring January 5, for 35 years. 00:17:23.20\00:17:27.44 Now he gets remarried and says to his second wife, 00:17:27.48\00:17:30.18 you know, Honey, I'm so used to January 5, 00:17:30.21\00:17:32.25 because my wife and I, who's now deceased. 00:17:32.28\00:17:36.25 We honor January 5 for 35 years 00:17:36.28\00:17:40.32 and I know you and I got married on July 4. 00:17:40.36\00:17:43.36 But would it be okay if we on a January 5 00:17:43.39\00:17:45.83 since I'm used to that day. 00:17:45.86\00:17:48.03 What would his wife say? 00:17:48.06\00:17:49.83 No, that day has nothing to do with me and you. 00:17:49.86\00:17:53.34 It identifies you and her. 00:17:53.37\00:17:55.44 Sunday, I'm gonna say this clearly 00:17:55.47\00:17:57.37 has nothing to do with God's blessing. 00:17:57.41\00:17:59.71 It's a work day. 00:17:59.74\00:18:01.11 It's the first day of the week, 00:18:01.14\00:18:03.24 and as sincere as we are, we can be sincerely wrong. 00:18:03.28\00:18:07.88 Not in a judgmental way, but when you look at the Bible, 00:18:07.92\00:18:11.35 nothing happened on the first day of the week 00:18:11.39\00:18:13.96 that God blessed. 00:18:13.99\00:18:15.46 He saw that everything He made was very good, 00:18:15.49\00:18:17.36 but He only blessed one day of the week. 00:18:17.39\00:18:19.53 So let's go down the questions 00:18:19.56\00:18:21.50 to see how clearly the Bible identifies 00:18:21.53\00:18:23.83 and establish this cadence. 00:18:23.87\00:18:25.77 The first question, let's go to Mark 15:42, 00:18:25.80\00:18:30.21 which day is the preparation day? 00:18:30.24\00:18:31.81 Which day is the preparation day 00:18:31.84\00:18:33.27 for the Sabbath? 00:18:33.31\00:18:34.84 We're going to start with Mark 15:42. 00:18:34.88\00:18:38.25 And remember, friends, 00:18:38.28\00:18:39.61 I said this, and I'll reiterate it, 00:18:39.65\00:18:40.98 if it was just about the day, you can pick any day you want. 00:18:41.02\00:18:44.62 But it's not about the day. 00:18:44.65\00:18:46.22 It's about the God. 00:18:46.25\00:18:48.52 Mark 15:42, 00:18:48.56\00:18:50.76 "Now when evening had come, 00:18:50.79\00:18:53.06 because it was the preparation day 00:18:53.09\00:18:55.20 that is the day before the Sabbath. 00:18:55.23\00:18:58.20 So today, 00:18:58.23\00:19:00.80 an entire nation of Jews, 00:19:00.84\00:19:03.00 even though predominantly they rejected Christ, 00:19:03.04\00:19:06.41 they still honor the Sabbath. 00:19:06.44\00:19:08.24 The Sabbath day did not change. 00:19:08.28\00:19:10.45 It's the nation's attitude toward the God of the Sabbath 00:19:10.48\00:19:13.31 is what changed. 00:19:13.35\00:19:14.68 But we look clearly 00:19:14.72\00:19:16.32 that the seventh day 00:19:16.35\00:19:17.69 is the only day that God blessed. 00:19:17.72\00:19:19.72 And Exodus 20:8-11 connects the seventh day to the Sabbath. 00:19:19.75\00:19:24.16 The day before the Sabbath is called the Preparation Day. 00:19:24.19\00:19:27.10 Today, the entire Christian world 00:19:27.13\00:19:29.03 when Easter comes, 00:19:29.06\00:19:30.53 they call it Good Friday, 00:19:30.57\00:19:32.67 and they call the first day of the week, 00:19:32.70\00:19:34.04 Easter Sunday. 00:19:34.07\00:19:35.40 And that's the only time in the year 00:19:35.44\00:19:36.81 that they call Saturday, Holy Saturday. 00:19:36.84\00:19:39.11 It's amazing. 00:19:39.14\00:19:40.48 Once a year, it's called Holy Saturday, 00:19:40.51\00:19:42.71 between the Preparation Day and the Resurrection Day 00:19:42.74\00:19:45.35 is the seventh day. 00:19:45.38\00:19:46.95 The Resurrection Day is clearly the first day of the week. 00:19:46.98\00:19:50.19 The day before the Sabbath is a preparation. 00:19:50.22\00:19:52.22 So you have the preparation, the Sabbath and the first day. 00:19:52.25\00:19:55.32 Luke 23:50â | Luke 23:53-54. 00:19:55.36\00:20:00.53 The Bible identifies this clearly once again, 00:20:00.56\00:20:03.33 Luke 23:53-54. 00:20:03.37\00:20:05.73 "Then he took it down", that is the body of Christ, 00:20:05.77\00:20:08.34 "wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb 00:20:08.37\00:20:11.51 that was hewn out of the rock 00:20:11.54\00:20:13.17 where no one had ever lain before. 00:20:13.21\00:20:15.74 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near." 00:20:15.78\00:20:19.61 And we know the story very well. 00:20:19.65\00:20:21.28 After the Sabbath, 00:20:21.32\00:20:22.65 the women went to the tomb to anoint Christ 00:20:22.68\00:20:24.82 and found that the tomb had been empty. 00:20:24.85\00:20:26.96 The stone had been rolled away. 00:20:26.99\00:20:28.69 And that was the first day of the week. 00:20:28.72\00:20:31.39 And different gospel writers, some say while it was yet dark, 00:20:31.43\00:20:34.63 some say early in the morning, but the fact of the matter is, 00:20:34.66\00:20:38.53 they went on the first day. 00:20:38.57\00:20:40.47 And why was the Lord not there? 00:20:40.50\00:20:42.30 Because from the very beginning, 00:20:42.34\00:20:43.67 He established the first day as the day of work. 00:20:43.71\00:20:46.78 He got up to continue the work of redemption, 00:20:46.81\00:20:49.64 the work of salvation. 00:20:49.68\00:20:52.05 Let's go to Exodus 20:8-10. 00:20:52.08\00:20:55.15 The next question is, 00:20:55.18\00:20:56.52 which day of the week is the Sabbath? 00:20:56.55\00:20:58.29 Now I don't think we have anything 00:20:58.32\00:20:59.99 that we've missed so far, 00:21:00.02\00:21:01.42 but let us allow the Bible to speak. 00:21:01.46\00:21:04.86 Verse 8, 00:21:04.89\00:21:06.63 "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy." 00:21:06.66\00:21:08.96 Verse 9, 00:21:09.00\00:21:10.33 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work." 00:21:10.37\00:21:13.03 And the beginning of verse 10. 00:21:13.07\00:21:14.94 "But the seventh day 00:21:14.97\00:21:16.54 is the Sabbath of the Lord your God." 00:21:16.57\00:21:18.57 Now, I'm gonna say this twice, 00:21:18.61\00:21:21.74 first here, and at the end of another time. 00:21:21.78\00:21:24.78 The seventh day 00:21:24.81\00:21:26.15 is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. 00:21:26.18\00:21:28.28 Have you ever thought about this? 00:21:28.32\00:21:30.15 Don't ask yourself the question which day is the Sabbath? 00:21:30.19\00:21:32.95 Ask yourself the question, who is the Lord your God? 00:21:32.99\00:21:36.49 Who is your God? 00:21:36.52\00:21:38.13 If the God of creation is your God, 00:21:38.16\00:21:40.96 He's saying the seventh day is My Sabbath. 00:21:41.00\00:21:44.90 But if you want to just pick a day, 00:21:44.93\00:21:46.57 then you're disconnecting yourself from your obligation 00:21:46.60\00:21:48.80 to the God of creation. 00:21:48.84\00:21:50.54 You can pick any day, 00:21:50.57\00:21:52.04 but that's not the day God blessed. 00:21:52.07\00:21:53.84 We must ask ourselves the question, 00:21:53.88\00:21:55.64 am I willing to identify with my Lord, 00:21:55.68\00:21:59.25 the God of creation. 00:21:59.28\00:22:00.62 If that, in fact is the case, 00:22:00.65\00:22:01.98 He says, 00:22:02.02\00:22:03.35 the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord, your God. 00:22:03.39\00:22:07.96 Now, why can't we choose today? 00:22:07.99\00:22:10.23 Because we can't bless anything. 00:22:10.26\00:22:11.99 So what's the issue? 00:22:12.03\00:22:13.36 Ezekiel 22:26, 00:22:13.40\00:22:15.76 this is a major part of the issue. 00:22:15.80\00:22:18.37 This happened among the Jews when they went into rebellion. 00:22:18.40\00:22:21.64 This is happening again today in the Christian world. 00:22:21.67\00:22:24.27 The Bible says in Exodus, in Ezekiel 22: 26. 00:22:24.31\00:22:28.54 "Her priests have violated My law," 00:22:28.58\00:22:31.18 it's clear, 00:22:31.21\00:22:32.55 "and profaned My holy things, 00:22:32.58\00:22:34.58 they have not distinguished 00:22:34.62\00:22:36.35 between the holy and the unholy," 00:22:36.38\00:22:38.85 Sunday has never been a holy day, 00:22:38.89\00:22:40.59 it's an unholy day, 00:22:40.62\00:22:42.49 "nor have they made known the difference 00:22:42.52\00:22:44.33 between the unclean and the clean." 00:22:44.36\00:22:46.49 Today, pastors teach you can eat anything. 00:22:46.53\00:22:49.03 The Bible doesn't teach that. 00:22:49.06\00:22:50.87 And what is the issue? 00:22:50.90\00:22:52.23 "And they have hidden their eyes 00:22:52.27\00:22:53.74 from My Sabbaths, 00:22:53.77\00:22:55.97 so that I am profaned among them." 00:22:56.00\00:22:58.24 That's a powerful statement that the Lord made, 00:22:58.27\00:23:00.38 when we hide our eyes from His Sabbath. 00:23:00.41\00:23:03.24 The Sabbath hasn't been hidden. 00:23:03.28\00:23:05.48 The Sabbath is not invisible. 00:23:05.51\00:23:07.62 We have just ignored it. 00:23:07.65\00:23:09.38 We cannot hide our eyes from the Sabbath. 00:23:09.42\00:23:11.55 And people say, 00:23:11.59\00:23:12.92 "Well, you know, you really got, 00:23:12.95\00:23:14.29 you guys are making a big deal out of the Sabbath." 00:23:14.32\00:23:16.29 I've often asked the question, 00:23:16.32\00:23:17.73 "What is there about the Sabbath 00:23:17.76\00:23:19.39 that makes us want to ignore it?" 00:23:19.43\00:23:21.26 Some people say, 00:23:21.30\00:23:22.63 "Well, because it's a salvation by works." 00:23:22.66\00:23:25.77 When you read the Sabbath command, 00:23:25.80\00:23:27.44 you will find the word work, but not to be saved. 00:23:27.47\00:23:31.27 It'll simply say, "Thou shall not do any works." 00:23:31.31\00:23:36.21 The work has been done by the Lord. 00:23:36.24\00:23:38.45 We are simply called to honor what God has already done. 00:23:38.48\00:23:43.15 My last text, 00:23:43.18\00:23:44.52 that what kind of day should the Sabbath be? 00:23:44.55\00:23:46.99 Isaiah 58:13, 00:23:47.02\00:23:49.66 "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, 00:23:49.69\00:23:51.89 from doing your pleasure on My holy day, 00:23:51.93\00:23:54.50 and call the Sabbath, a delight, 00:23:54.53\00:23:56.46 the holy day of the Lord honorable 00:23:56.50\00:23:58.80 and shall honor Him, 00:23:58.83\00:24:00.77 not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasures, 00:24:00.80\00:24:03.87 nor speaking your own words." 00:24:03.91\00:24:05.87 Verse 14, 00:24:05.91\00:24:07.24 "Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord, 00:24:07.28\00:24:09.54 and I will cause you to ride on the high heels of the earth, 00:24:09.58\00:24:12.45 and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, 00:24:12.48\00:24:15.32 for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." 00:24:15.35\00:24:17.72 God wants to bless you. 00:24:17.75\00:24:19.99 The question is, do you want to be blessed by the Lord. 00:24:20.02\00:24:22.62 If, in fact, that's the case, remember Mark 2:27, 00:24:22.66\00:24:26.90 "The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. 00:24:26.93\00:24:31.17 Honor the Lord of the Sabbath 00:24:31.20\00:24:32.77 and you'll be a blessed man and woman." 00:24:32.80\00:24:35.94 Praise the Lord. 00:24:35.97\00:24:37.31 Thank you so much, pastor, for that. 00:24:37.34\00:24:38.67 I appreciate that. 00:24:38.71\00:24:40.04 We're going to take a quick break 00:24:40.08\00:24:41.41 and we'll be right back in a moment. 00:24:41.44\00:24:42.78 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:48.55\00:24:49.88 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:24:49.92\00:24:52.02 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:26:59.11\00:27:00.45 "As their perpetual covenant." 00:27:00.48\00:27:02.72 The Sabbath is to be a sign of our relationship, 00:27:02.75\00:27:07.02 our covenantal relationship with God as our Father. 00:27:07.06\00:27:11.66 The Sabbath is also a sign that God is our Creator, 00:27:11.69\00:27:15.80 as Pastor Ryan and Pastor John talked about. 00:27:15.83\00:27:18.83 We see that in Exodus 31 in the next verse, verse 17, 00:27:18.87\00:27:22.87 "It is a sign, the Sabbath that is, 00:27:22.90\00:27:25.01 is a sign between me 00:27:25.04\00:27:26.41 and the children of Israel forever, 00:27:26.44\00:27:28.54 for in six days 00:27:28.58\00:27:30.21 the Lord made heavens and earth, 00:27:30.25\00:27:32.01 and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed." 00:27:32.05\00:27:35.22 So the Sabbath is a sign 00:27:35.25\00:27:36.99 every week that God is our Creator. 00:27:37.02\00:27:41.12 The Sabbath is also a sign of the relationship 00:27:41.16\00:27:44.16 between God and His people. 00:27:44.19\00:27:45.73 And it serves as a test of our loyalty to Him. 00:27:45.76\00:27:51.03 Exodus, Ezekiel, not Exodus, Ezekiel 20:20. 00:27:51.07\00:27:56.27 It says, 00:27:56.30\00:27:57.64 "Hallow My Sabbaths, 00:27:57.67\00:27:59.01 and they will be a sign between Me and you, 00:27:59.04\00:28:01.11 that you may know that I am the Lord your God." 00:28:01.14\00:28:05.75 It shows ownership. 00:28:05.78\00:28:07.22 Every time when we keep the Sabbath, 00:28:07.25\00:28:09.22 we are saying, 00:28:09.25\00:28:10.59 "Yes, God, I will follow You. 00:28:10.62\00:28:12.22 Yes, God, I will walk in Your ways. 00:28:12.25\00:28:15.42 Yes, God, I want You to be my father. 00:28:15.46\00:28:18.09 And I want to be in covenant relationship 00:28:18.13\00:28:21.10 with You as Your child." 00:28:21.13\00:28:23.26 The Sabbath is also a sign that God is our sanctifier, 00:28:23.30\00:28:27.77 which we won't touch on, 00:28:27.80\00:28:29.14 because Shelley is going to cover that. 00:28:29.17\00:28:30.61 So let's look at the focus of this lesson, 00:28:30.64\00:28:32.87 the Sabbath being a covenant sign of grace. 00:28:32.91\00:28:36.01 How is the Sabbath a covenant sign of grace? 00:28:36.04\00:28:38.21 I would submit to you 00:28:38.25\00:28:39.58 there's four ways and four reasons, 00:28:39.61\00:28:42.45 Pastor John, so every Sabbath, it reminds you of this. 00:28:42.48\00:28:46.12 Number one, the Sabbath reminds us 00:28:46.15\00:28:47.69 where we came from. 00:28:47.72\00:28:49.06 Number two, 00:28:49.09\00:28:50.43 it reminds us who our deliverer is. 00:28:50.46\00:28:53.93 Number three, it reminds us that we've been redeemed. 00:28:53.96\00:28:56.33 And number four, 00:28:56.36\00:28:57.70 it reminds us of the rest and freedom 00:28:57.73\00:29:00.74 that we have in Him. 00:29:00.77\00:29:02.10 So let's look at number one. 00:29:02.14\00:29:03.47 The Sabbath is a covenant sign of grace 00:29:03.51\00:29:04.91 because it reminds us where we came from. 00:29:04.94\00:29:06.41 We're going to Deuteronomy. 00:29:06.44\00:29:08.08 Deuteronomy Chapter 5, 00:29:08.11\00:29:09.48 we're going to spend several verses in here. 00:29:09.51\00:29:12.78 Of course, this is the giving of the Ten Commandments 00:29:12.81\00:29:15.88 or the ten words of God. 00:29:15.92\00:29:18.69 Same thing from Exodus 20, 00:29:18.72\00:29:20.09 but we, there's a different twist 00:29:20.12\00:29:22.19 here in Deuteronomy 5 00:29:22.22\00:29:23.56 when the Sabbath commandment is brought forth. 00:29:23.59\00:29:25.89 We see in Exodus 20 00:29:25.93\00:29:27.26 the reminder that 00:29:27.30\00:29:28.76 in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, 00:29:28.80\00:29:30.73 and the reminder that we keep the Sabbath 00:29:30.77\00:29:32.23 because He's our Creator. 00:29:32.27\00:29:33.60 But in Deuteronomy 5, 00:29:33.64\00:29:35.14 we specifically see that we observe, 00:29:35.17\00:29:37.67 we keep the Sabbath day, 00:29:37.71\00:29:39.67 because it reminds us of where we came from. 00:29:39.71\00:29:42.11 Deuteronomy 5:12, 00:29:42.14\00:29:43.55 "Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy, 00:29:43.58\00:29:45.71 as the Lord your God commanded you. 00:29:45.75\00:29:48.25 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 00:29:48.28\00:29:50.35 but the seventh day 00:29:50.39\00:29:51.99 is the Sabbath of the Lord your God." 00:29:52.02\00:29:54.52 Jump down to verse 15. 00:29:54.56\00:29:56.26 "And remember that 00:29:56.29\00:29:58.43 you were a slave in the land of Egypt." 00:29:58.46\00:30:02.20 Every Sabbath, when those precious hours, 00:30:02.23\00:30:05.17 those sanctified hours, 00:30:05.20\00:30:06.60 those set apart hours roll around 00:30:06.63\00:30:08.87 on Friday night at sundown. 00:30:08.90\00:30:11.31 Remind, sit down and take time, 00:30:11.34\00:30:14.18 and remember where you came from. 00:30:14.21\00:30:16.18 We were slaves. We were stuck in sin. 00:30:16.21\00:30:18.65 We were unredeemable and unreachable. 00:30:18.68\00:30:21.78 We remember where God brought us from? 00:30:21.82\00:30:24.05 Out of darkness into His marvelous light. 00:30:24.09\00:30:26.92 I think in my own life, 00:30:26.96\00:30:28.56 I do not sit and remember 00:30:28.59\00:30:31.73 where God brought me from enough. 00:30:31.76\00:30:35.53 I need to do that more in my own life. 00:30:35.56\00:30:37.83 The Sabbath doesn't just remind us 00:30:37.87\00:30:39.20 where we came from. 00:30:39.23\00:30:40.57 It reminds us who our deliverer is. 00:30:40.60\00:30:41.94 Deuteronomy 5:2, 00:30:41.97\00:30:44.31 "The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 00:30:44.34\00:30:46.91 The Lord did not make this covenant 00:30:46.94\00:30:48.28 with our fathers, 00:30:48.31\00:30:49.64 but with us, those who are here today, 00:30:49.68\00:30:52.05 all of us who are alive." 00:30:52.08\00:30:53.52 Jump down to verse 8, 00:30:53.55\00:30:55.18 "I am the Lord your God 00:30:55.22\00:30:57.49 who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 00:30:57.52\00:30:59.92 out of the house of bondage." 00:30:59.95\00:31:02.22 He's reminding them that 00:31:02.26\00:31:03.59 He is the one who delivered them from Egypt. 00:31:03.63\00:31:05.13 He's the one who brought them through the Red Sea. 00:31:05.16\00:31:07.56 He's the one who set them free. 00:31:07.60\00:31:10.83 Every Sabbath 00:31:10.87\00:31:12.20 don't just remember where you were 00:31:12.23\00:31:13.74 and stuck in sin, 00:31:13.77\00:31:15.17 but who your God is, how big your God is, 00:31:15.20\00:31:18.51 the omnipotent, all powerful, all knowing omniscient God, 00:31:18.54\00:31:22.54 that is your God, 00:31:22.58\00:31:24.08 and He can deliver you. 00:31:24.11\00:31:25.85 Number three, Remember, 00:31:25.88\00:31:27.32 the Sabbath reminds us that we have been redeemed. 00:31:27.35\00:31:31.72 Verse 15, Deuteronomy 5:15. 00:31:31.75\00:31:37.36 Remember, you are a slave in the land of Egypt." 00:31:37.39\00:31:39.66 That's where we remember where we came from. 00:31:39.69\00:31:42.26 "And the Lord your God 00:31:42.30\00:31:43.63 brought you out there by a mighty hand," 00:31:43.67\00:31:45.37 that's remembering that He is our deliverer, 00:31:45.40\00:31:48.14 "and by an outstretched arm, 00:31:48.17\00:31:49.97 therefore the Lord your God commanded you 00:31:50.01\00:31:52.81 to keep the Sabbath day." 00:31:52.84\00:31:55.51 Only those who are redeemed by Christ 00:31:55.54\00:31:58.31 can recognize and understand what creation means. 00:31:58.35\00:32:02.82 I think the Sabbath is a sign of redemption, 00:32:02.85\00:32:05.75 almost has precedence over the Sabbath 00:32:05.79\00:32:09.02 as a memorial of creation, 00:32:09.06\00:32:10.69 because we have to recognize who we are, 00:32:10.73\00:32:12.83 and where we have been redeemed from 00:32:12.86\00:32:14.96 to even understand that creative process. 00:32:15.00\00:32:19.63 The Sabbath is a constant reminder, 00:32:19.67\00:32:21.20 it's a weekly reminder 00:32:21.24\00:32:22.64 that we're included in His covenant of grace 00:32:22.67\00:32:24.77 that you and I, we came from sin, 00:32:24.81\00:32:27.11 but that our deliverer is mighty, 00:32:27.14\00:32:30.48 and that He has redeemed us. 00:32:30.51\00:32:32.35 The Sabbath is also a reminder, this is number four. 00:32:32.38\00:32:35.92 It reminds us of the rest and freedom 00:32:35.95\00:32:38.99 we have in Him. 00:32:39.02\00:32:40.52 Exodus 35. 00:32:40.56\00:32:42.52 Jump over to Exodus 35:2. 00:32:42.56\00:32:45.33 The Bible says, 00:32:45.36\00:32:46.70 "Work shall be done for six days," 00:32:46.73\00:32:48.06 there's that word work for six days, 00:32:48.10\00:32:50.30 "but the seventh day should be a holy day for you, 00:32:50.33\00:32:53.84 a Sabbath Shabbat of rest to the Lord." 00:32:53.87\00:32:59.24 Now the word rest is Shabbaton. 00:32:59.27\00:33:01.61 It means special rest on the Sabbath. 00:33:01.64\00:33:06.11 The seventh day should be a holy day for you, 00:33:06.15\00:33:07.55 a Sabbath of rest. 00:33:07.58\00:33:08.92 So it's not just the Sabbath, but it's the Sabbath rest. 00:33:08.95\00:33:11.79 Isn't that amazing? 00:33:11.82\00:33:13.15 We work six days of the week, 00:33:13.19\00:33:14.59 but the Sabbath, 00:33:14.62\00:33:15.96 the Sabbath is the Sabbath rest. 00:33:15.99\00:33:17.96 I love that. 00:33:17.99\00:33:19.33 So as we look at God's rest, 00:33:19.36\00:33:21.76 God's rest symbolizes 00:33:21.80\00:33:23.93 the completion of His creation work 00:33:23.97\00:33:25.80 as Ryan already brought out in Genesis 2, 00:33:25.83\00:33:28.90 when the heavens and earth were finished, 00:33:28.94\00:33:30.57 God rested 00:33:30.61\00:33:31.94 at the end of the sixth day creation week. 00:33:31.97\00:33:34.74 And it is a reminder of His creative work. 00:33:34.78\00:33:39.78 God's rest is attained by faith. 00:33:39.81\00:33:42.15 Let's go to Hebrews. 00:33:42.18\00:33:43.52 Hebrews 4:1-2, 00:33:43.55\00:33:46.52 God's rest doesn't just symbolize 00:33:46.55\00:33:49.52 the completion of His creative work 00:33:49.56\00:33:50.93 as we see in Genesis, 00:33:50.96\00:33:52.39 but it also is attained by faith. 00:33:52.43\00:33:55.16 "Therefore, since a promise remains 00:33:55.20\00:33:57.27 of entering His rest, 00:33:57.30\00:33:59.37 let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. 00:33:59.40\00:34:02.84 For indeed the gospel was preached to us 00:34:02.87\00:34:05.31 as well as to them, 00:34:05.34\00:34:06.78 but the word which they heard did not profit them. 00:34:06.81\00:34:10.05 Why didn't it profit them? 00:34:10.08\00:34:11.61 "Because it was not being mixed with faith 00:34:11.65\00:34:14.55 in those who heard it." 00:34:14.58\00:34:17.05 In the previous chapter, we see that 00:34:17.09\00:34:18.65 God's people they failed to enter His rest 00:34:18.69\00:34:21.42 because of unbelief, 00:34:21.46\00:34:22.82 because of a hardened heart, because of disobedience. 00:34:22.86\00:34:27.83 But here we see that 00:34:27.86\00:34:29.20 God's rest is attained by faith. 00:34:29.23\00:34:33.03 We also see that His rest is based on His works, 00:34:33.07\00:34:35.74 not our own works. 00:34:35.77\00:34:38.24 Jump down to verse 9. 00:34:38.27\00:34:39.61 Hebrews 4:9-10, 00:34:39.64\00:34:42.04 "There remains therefore a rest, 00:34:42.08\00:34:43.91 a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 00:34:43.95\00:34:48.58 For he who has entered His rest 00:34:48.62\00:34:50.59 has himself also ceased from his works 00:34:50.62\00:34:53.19 as God did from His." 00:34:53.22\00:34:54.99 The Sabbath every week is reminder 00:34:55.02\00:34:57.59 that God is the one who sanctifies us, 00:34:57.63\00:35:00.90 that we can rest in Him. 00:35:00.93\00:35:02.96 When we worship on His holy Sabbath day, 00:35:03.00\00:35:05.60 we recognize that we can't change our hearts, 00:35:05.63\00:35:07.57 our past, our sin, our addiction. 00:35:07.60\00:35:10.17 We recognize that 00:35:10.21\00:35:11.54 Jesus is our redeemer, 00:35:11.57\00:35:12.91 our deliverer 00:35:12.94\00:35:14.28 and He delivers us from bondage. 00:35:14.31\00:35:16.24 We recognize that we can reach out by faith 00:35:16.28\00:35:19.35 and accept His work in our life. 00:35:19.38\00:35:21.68 And we also recognize that you and I, 00:35:21.72\00:35:23.72 we can rest in Him 00:35:23.75\00:35:25.12 and His creative redemptive work in our lives. 00:35:25.15\00:35:28.42 Oh, amen. 00:35:28.46\00:35:29.86 Thank you, Jill. 00:35:29.89\00:35:31.23 I just have to say, 00:35:31.26\00:35:32.76 you know, you may, 00:35:32.79\00:35:34.13 sometimes I get so animated 00:35:34.16\00:35:35.66 that I don't even realize I'm doing it. 00:35:35.70\00:35:37.70 The reason I'm so excited about this, 00:35:37.73\00:35:40.60 this particular quarterly 00:35:40.64\00:35:42.67 is because when the Lord called me 00:35:42.70\00:35:44.07 to full time ministry, 00:35:44.11\00:35:45.44 He told me this was in 2000. 00:35:45.47\00:35:46.81 He said, 00:35:46.84\00:35:48.18 "Forget what you think, 00:35:48.21\00:35:49.54 you know, come sit at my feet, I will teach you." 00:35:49.58\00:35:51.21 He led me on a study of the sanctuary 00:35:51.25\00:35:53.48 and a study of the covenants back in 2000. 00:35:53.52\00:35:56.99 And I'll tell you what? 00:35:57.02\00:35:58.55 When I realized 00:35:58.59\00:35:59.92 the commandments weren't nailed to the cross, 00:35:59.95\00:36:02.42 I was a Sabbath keeper for a couple of years 00:36:02.46\00:36:05.53 before I became a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:36:05.56\00:36:08.06 but I'll never forget 00:36:08.10\00:36:10.83 hitting this particular... 00:36:10.87\00:36:14.17 When I came to this particular scripture, 00:36:14.20\00:36:16.17 as the Lord took me 00:36:16.20\00:36:17.94 on a special study of the Sabbath. 00:36:17.97\00:36:21.08 Exodus 31:13, 00:36:21.11\00:36:23.01 "Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: 00:36:23.04\00:36:26.11 'Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, 00:36:26.15\00:36:28.08 for it is a sign between Me and you 00:36:28.12\00:36:31.15 throughout your generations, that," 00:36:31.19\00:36:34.66 and anytime you see that or so that, 00:36:34.69\00:36:36.99 it's a purpose statement. 00:36:37.03\00:36:38.53 It's a sign for this purpose that 00:36:38.56\00:36:42.06 "you may know 00:36:42.10\00:36:43.87 that I am the Lord who sanctifies you." 00:36:43.90\00:36:46.70 To be sanctified is to be set apart from sin, 00:36:46.74\00:36:51.57 to be sanctified. 00:36:51.61\00:36:53.44 Sanctification and holiness are synonymous. 00:36:53.48\00:36:56.61 But here's my point. 00:36:56.64\00:36:58.81 All my life, oh, I was in a perform... 00:36:58.85\00:37:02.45 I grew up in a Sunday keeping church, 00:37:02.48\00:37:04.92 but boy, it was performance oriented. 00:37:04.95\00:37:07.39 I just kept thinking, 00:37:07.42\00:37:08.76 "Oh, if I could just read my Bible more, 00:37:08.79\00:37:11.29 if I pray more, if I would..." 00:37:11.33\00:37:12.79 I had the do mores. 00:37:12.83\00:37:14.93 And I never felt good enough. 00:37:14.96\00:37:17.27 And all of a sudden, I realized, 00:37:17.30\00:37:21.14 God's the one who's going to sanctify me. 00:37:21.17\00:37:23.51 Now, yes, it takes permission from me. 00:37:23.54\00:37:26.91 And we're going to get into that. 00:37:26.94\00:37:28.71 But there's two ideas joined in this text. 00:37:28.74\00:37:33.15 There's the idea that the Sabbath 00:37:33.18\00:37:35.52 is a sign of knowledge, 00:37:35.55\00:37:40.66 that you may know me, 00:37:40.69\00:37:42.49 but then that it's a sign of sanctification, 00:37:42.52\00:37:45.29 and I'll tell you it was an external sign. 00:37:45.33\00:37:47.56 I mean, you don't and I don't find 00:37:47.60\00:37:49.43 in any other ancient Israel. 00:37:49.46\00:37:52.27 I mean, ancient civilization, 00:37:52.30\00:37:56.30 you don't find a parallel for the Sabbath. 00:37:56.34\00:37:58.84 This was a unique sign 00:37:58.87\00:38:00.21 that showed, hey, they are the people of God. 00:38:00.24\00:38:03.08 So we're going to look at sanctification, 00:38:03.11\00:38:05.71 because I'm not going to have time to get both. 00:38:05.75\00:38:08.42 If we can get to the knowledge part, we will. 00:38:08.45\00:38:11.79 Let me ask you. 00:38:11.82\00:38:13.86 Is grace an act of God 00:38:13.89\00:38:17.53 or a work of God? 00:38:17.56\00:38:20.03 It's both. 00:38:20.06\00:38:21.83 The act of God is justification. 00:38:21.86\00:38:26.33 This is when He as judge is declaring us not guilty. 00:38:26.37\00:38:31.47 He's declaring us pardoned. 00:38:31.51\00:38:34.24 And this is the... When you have, 00:38:34.28\00:38:37.48 you know, to condemn someone, 00:38:37.51\00:38:39.75 I mean, if somebody is guilty, 00:38:39.78\00:38:41.78 you say, okay, they're condemned. 00:38:41.82\00:38:44.82 But when you're justified, you're acquitted. 00:38:44.85\00:38:47.66 And I mean, that is to me so exciting 00:38:47.69\00:38:50.43 that Christ's righteousness has been credited to me, 00:38:50.46\00:38:54.16 and I am justified by grace through faith. 00:38:54.20\00:38:59.30 That means the penalty of sin 00:38:59.33\00:39:02.04 is no longer hanging over my head. 00:39:02.07\00:39:05.67 But now the second part, that's the act of God. 00:39:05.71\00:39:10.01 The second part is the work of God 00:39:10.05\00:39:14.95 and to be sanctification 00:39:14.98\00:39:20.79 is to be separated to God 00:39:20.82\00:39:24.69 and away from evil. 00:39:24.73\00:39:27.80 It requires our cooperation with God, if you will. 00:39:27.83\00:39:33.77 Justification, instantaneous act. 00:39:33.80\00:39:36.97 Sanctification, the work of a lifetime. 00:39:37.01\00:39:39.87 But what sanctification does? 00:39:39.91\00:39:41.91 Christ came to deliver us from the power of sin, 00:39:41.94\00:39:45.81 to set us apart from sin. 00:39:45.85\00:39:48.58 And this is the beautiful thing that the Sabbath points to. 00:39:48.62\00:39:54.16 I want to share three scriptures with you. 00:39:54.19\00:39:57.69 Because in justification, it's imputed righteousness. 00:39:57.73\00:40:02.53 Imputed just simply means credited to our account. 00:40:02.56\00:40:06.30 He reconciles us to God, 00:40:06.33\00:40:08.27 our bank accounts totally overdrawn. 00:40:08.30\00:40:11.11 He credits His righteousness into our account. 00:40:11.14\00:40:14.48 And all of us said we're reconciled. 00:40:14.51\00:40:17.15 But with sanctification, 00:40:17.18\00:40:22.12 this is imparted righteousness. 00:40:22.15\00:40:25.15 This is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 00:40:25.19\00:40:29.09 This is when the Holy Spirit fills you 00:40:29.12\00:40:33.53 and leads you into... 00:40:33.56\00:40:37.10 Philippians 2:13, 00:40:37.13\00:40:38.50 "He works in you 00:40:38.53\00:40:39.87 too will and to do His good pleasure." 00:40:39.90\00:40:42.04 Philippians 1:6, 00:40:42.07\00:40:43.64 "That He will continue 00:40:43.67\00:40:46.47 the good work He's begun in you." 00:40:46.51\00:40:48.64 But let me show you something. 00:40:48.68\00:40:50.11 Three scriptures, 1 Thessalonians 5-23. 00:40:50.15\00:40:54.65 1 Thessalonians 5:23. 00:40:54.68\00:40:57.02 The entire Godhead 00:40:57.05\00:40:59.89 is identified in connection 00:40:59.92\00:41:03.63 with the process of sanctification. 00:41:03.66\00:41:07.63 1 Thessalonians 5:23, says, 00:41:07.66\00:41:11.23 "Now may the God of peace," 00:41:11.27\00:41:13.27 this is Jehovah Shalom, 00:41:13.30\00:41:14.64 Jehovah, that is that covenant name of God. 00:41:14.67\00:41:19.67 "May the God of peace himself 00:41:19.71\00:41:21.61 sanctify you completely." 00:41:21.64\00:41:25.95 It's God the Father doing the work in you. 00:41:25.98\00:41:28.85 "May your whole spirit, soul and body 00:41:28.88\00:41:31.09 be preserved blameless 00:41:31.12\00:41:32.75 at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:41:32.79\00:41:35.49 He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it." 00:41:35.52\00:41:39.86 God will bring it to pass 00:41:39.89\00:41:43.20 when you say, Lord, I give you permission. 00:41:43.23\00:41:47.27 Take my heart for I can't give it, 00:41:47.30\00:41:49.07 but, oh Lord, let my will line up with Your will. 00:41:49.10\00:41:52.31 I want Your will done in my life. 00:41:52.34\00:41:55.11 1 Corinthians 1:30 shows 00:41:55.14\00:41:57.91 how the Lord Jesus Christ is part of our sanctification. 00:41:57.95\00:42:03.25 1 Corinthians 1:30 says, 00:42:03.28\00:42:05.49 "But of him, you are in Christ Jesus 00:42:05.52\00:42:08.76 who became for us, wisdom from God, 00:42:08.79\00:42:12.83 righteousness, sanctification, 00:42:12.86\00:42:17.57 and redemption." 00:42:17.60\00:42:19.13 Through Christ we become wise, 00:42:19.17\00:42:22.24 we become righteous. 00:42:22.27\00:42:25.41 He is our sanctification, 00:42:25.44\00:42:27.64 will we accept Him as our Savior. 00:42:27.68\00:42:30.78 He's who sets us apart. 00:42:30.81\00:42:33.28 2 Thessalonians 2:13. 00:42:33.31\00:42:36.45 2 Thessalonians 2:13, says, 00:42:36.48\00:42:42.29 "We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, 00:42:42.32\00:42:45.79 brethren, beloved by the Lord 00:42:45.83\00:42:47.73 because God from the beginning 00:42:47.76\00:42:50.17 chose you for salvation 00:42:50.20\00:42:52.63 through sanctification 00:42:52.67\00:42:54.60 by the Spirit and belief in the truth." 00:42:54.64\00:42:59.97 You can remember this one, 2 Thessalonians 2:13, 00:43:00.01\00:43:03.11 Philippians 2:30. 00:43:03.14\00:43:04.81 It's the Spirit working in 00:43:04.85\00:43:06.18 is still willing to do His good pleasure. 00:43:06.21\00:43:08.82 And all of this is signified. 00:43:08.85\00:43:13.96 You remember it as you keep the Sabbath. 00:43:13.99\00:43:16.69 I remember the first Sabbath that I kept. 00:43:16.73\00:43:18.83 It was just like... 00:43:18.86\00:43:22.06 For the first time I exhaled, I understood grace. 00:43:22.10\00:43:26.57 Oh, it makes me so mad 00:43:26.60\00:43:27.94 when people say Sabbath keeping is legalistic. 00:43:27.97\00:43:30.34 I never understood grace, 00:43:30.37\00:43:34.71 until I understood 00:43:34.74\00:43:37.65 that God's commandments and keeping His Sabbath, 00:43:37.68\00:43:41.22 on that word Sabbath was so exciting. 00:43:41.25\00:43:44.42 Just, I'm a workaholic. 00:43:44.45\00:43:46.52 I know some other people on this panel 00:43:46.55\00:43:48.46 that are workaholics. 00:43:48.49\00:43:49.82 If it weren't for the Sabbath, we'd work ourselves to death. 00:43:49.86\00:43:53.16 But it's also a sign of knowledge. 00:43:53.19\00:43:57.17 And I just want to quickly give you some scriptures. 00:43:57.20\00:43:59.80 The Hebrew understanding of knowledge 00:43:59.83\00:44:01.84 includes intellectual and emotional 00:44:01.87\00:44:06.88 and relational aspects, 00:44:06.91\00:44:10.05 it's to walk in relationship with one. 00:44:10.08\00:44:13.42 So just jot these scripture references down. 00:44:13.45\00:44:16.79 Isaiah 11:2 says that we, 00:44:16.82\00:44:21.49 "The spirit of the knowledge, 00:44:21.52\00:44:22.86 and the fear of the Lord will be on us." 00:44:22.89\00:44:24.93 So that's, that's what Sabbath helps us to do. 00:44:24.96\00:44:28.00 Isaiah 43:10, 00:44:28.03\00:44:30.27 "We know the Lord and believe Him." 00:44:30.30\00:44:34.27 It's the knowledge that we will learn 00:44:34.30\00:44:36.71 during the Sabbath. 00:44:36.74\00:44:38.07 Psalm 9:10, 00:44:38.11\00:44:39.77 "To know the Lord means to trust and seek Him," 00:44:39.81\00:44:43.01 it says, 00:44:43.04\00:44:44.38 "Those who know Your name, put their trust on You, 00:44:44.41\00:44:46.78 and because they seek You." 00:44:46.82\00:44:50.42 Jeremiah 10:25, 00:44:50.45\00:44:52.65 "To know the Lord is to call on His name." 00:44:52.69\00:44:55.86 And you know, I love Sabbath 00:44:55.89\00:44:58.69 because you've got all day 00:44:58.73\00:45:00.06 to call on the name of the Lord. 00:45:00.10\00:45:01.43 1 Chronicles 28:9, 00:45:01.46\00:45:03.43 "To know the Lord is to serve Him 00:45:03.47\00:45:06.87 with a loyal heart and a willing mind." 00:45:06.90\00:45:10.31 Sabbath is a sign 00:45:10.34\00:45:14.18 of the covenant of grace. 00:45:14.21\00:45:16.95 It is a sign of the redemptive deep love. 00:45:16.98\00:45:20.78 Sabbath, to me, 00:45:20.82\00:45:22.48 is the most beautiful day of the week. 00:45:22.52\00:45:24.95 And it's why we have a weekly cycle. 00:45:24.99\00:45:27.66 Amen. Wow. 00:45:27.69\00:45:30.59 Thank you, Shelley. 00:45:30.63\00:45:31.96 I know that, 00:45:31.99\00:45:33.33 for us, the Sabbath is a really special day. 00:45:33.36\00:45:35.56 I mean what a great lesson. 00:45:35.60\00:45:36.93 I mean, the whole quarterly has been fantastic, 00:45:36.97\00:45:38.30 but especially lesson nine here on the Sabbath. 00:45:38.33\00:45:40.50 I know Jill and I talked about Friday night 00:45:40.54\00:45:42.94 is one of our most favorite times of the week. 00:45:42.97\00:45:45.04 We even have usually a little special meal, 00:45:45.07\00:45:47.11 and just special things that we do on the Sabbath day. 00:45:47.14\00:45:50.25 And we just look forward to the Sabbath. 00:45:50.28\00:45:52.05 And what a great time to spend with God. 00:45:52.08\00:45:54.18 And I appreciate pastor and others 00:45:54.22\00:45:55.72 that mentioned about the relationship aspect, 00:45:55.75\00:45:57.49 because that's what it is. 00:45:57.52\00:45:58.89 And I have Thursday, 00:45:58.92\00:46:00.89 and it's called, 00:46:00.92\00:46:02.26 Remember the Sabbath day. 00:46:02.29\00:46:04.46 So the key word that we're focusing on here 00:46:04.49\00:46:05.86 is remember 00:46:05.89\00:46:08.06 and that's our focus. 00:46:08.10\00:46:10.90 I just want to say that I'm so thankful for the person, 00:46:10.93\00:46:13.37 the staff that remembered to hit the record button 00:46:13.40\00:46:15.94 for the Sabbath School Panel. 00:46:15.97\00:46:17.74 Right, aren't you? 00:46:17.77\00:46:19.11 Because otherwise you wouldn't be watching 00:46:19.14\00:46:20.48 if they didn't hit the record button. 00:46:20.51\00:46:21.84 And I want to say I'm so thankful 00:46:21.88\00:46:23.21 that you remembered, 00:46:23.24\00:46:24.58 we're thinking about remembered 00:46:24.61\00:46:25.95 to tune into 3ABN Sabbath School Panel. 00:46:25.98\00:46:27.35 Somewhere on your schedule, you remembered to tune in. 00:46:27.38\00:46:30.19 I remember several years ago, I was in an office here at 3ABN 00:46:30.22\00:46:33.49 and we were having a meeting that was quiet, 00:46:33.52\00:46:35.16 you know we're having a discussion, 00:46:35.19\00:46:36.52 all of a sudden the entire office just erupted, 00:46:36.56\00:46:38.59 bells and whistles, it sound like an orchestra. 00:46:38.63\00:46:40.83 There was like alarms going off. 00:46:40.86\00:46:42.96 And what this person had done, their cell phone had an alarm, 00:46:43.00\00:46:45.47 their computer had an alarm, their iPad had an alarm, 00:46:45.50\00:46:48.44 and it was reminding them to drink water. 00:46:48.47\00:46:51.21 That was a reminder. 00:46:51.24\00:46:52.57 So I think about this, 00:46:52.61\00:46:56.54 there was a study that was done by... 00:46:56.58\00:46:58.78 Her name, let me look here is Karen Boler 00:46:58.81\00:47:01.48 from John Hopkins University. 00:47:01.52\00:47:02.85 She did a little study on remembering. 00:47:02.88\00:47:05.05 It seems like just our whole lives 00:47:05.09\00:47:06.42 are bombarded, we're trying to remember stuff. 00:47:06.45\00:47:08.12 We got these little cell phones. 00:47:08.16\00:47:09.66 I've got calendars, reminders, and all this stuff 00:47:09.69\00:47:11.59 that keeps popping up, to remember, right? 00:47:11.63\00:47:13.90 So we're talking about remembering the Sabbath. 00:47:13.93\00:47:15.66 So Karen did a research and finding out about things 00:47:15.70\00:47:20.17 you know how we did is remembering stuff as a society. 00:47:20.20\00:47:22.87 Well, we're not doing that well. 00:47:22.90\00:47:25.47 She says that 83% of people forget names. 00:47:25.51\00:47:29.14 Hopefully they don't forget their own name, right? 00:47:29.18\00:47:31.08 But they forget names. 00:47:31.11\00:47:33.31 Sixty percent forget where something is. 00:47:33.35\00:47:36.99 I can relate. 00:47:37.02\00:47:39.25 Fifty seven percent also telephone numbers. 00:47:39.29\00:47:42.36 Fifty three percent forget words. 00:47:42.39\00:47:45.43 Forty nine percent forget what was said. 00:47:45.46\00:47:49.26 Forty two percent forget faces, 00:47:49.30\00:47:51.90 and 38% forget 00:47:51.93\00:47:54.14 whether I've just done something, 00:47:54.17\00:47:56.27 I've been there too. 00:47:56.30\00:47:57.64 So I think I can relate to a number of these areas. 00:47:57.67\00:48:00.08 But then you go to the other extreme, okay? 00:48:00.11\00:48:02.01 So then you have some people who seem to never forget. 00:48:02.04\00:48:05.31 This lady's name Miss Price 00:48:05.35\00:48:07.02 was the first person ever to be diagnosed 00:48:07.05\00:48:09.78 with what is known as, hopefully I can say this 00:48:09.82\00:48:12.65 highly superior autobiographical memory. 00:48:12.69\00:48:16.62 In other words, HSM. 00:48:16.66\00:48:18.69 It's a condition she shares 00:48:18.73\00:48:20.13 with only about 60 people in the world. 00:48:20.16\00:48:23.26 Miss Price remembers the day of the week 00:48:23.30\00:48:26.00 for every day since 1980, 00:48:26.03\00:48:28.17 for her it's 1980. 00:48:28.20\00:48:29.77 She remembers what she was doing, 00:48:29.80\00:48:31.67 who she was with, 00:48:31.71\00:48:33.04 where she was on each of these days. 00:48:33.07\00:48:35.81 She can even actively recall a memory of 20 years ago, 00:48:35.84\00:48:39.68 as easily as a memory of just two days ago. 00:48:39.71\00:48:42.52 That's incredible. 00:48:42.55\00:48:43.89 There's a young man, his name is Vasai. 00:48:43.92\00:48:46.09 He also has the same condition of HSM. 00:48:46.12\00:48:49.12 And he thinks his condition has made him a kinder, 00:48:49.16\00:48:51.96 more tolerant person. 00:48:51.99\00:48:54.40 He says, some say forgive and forget. 00:48:54.43\00:48:57.83 But since forgetting is a luxury I don't have, 00:48:57.87\00:49:00.77 I need to learn to genuinely forgive. 00:49:00.80\00:49:03.74 He says not just others but myself. 00:49:03.77\00:49:06.78 You know, so today we're looking at Exodus 20:8-11. 00:49:06.81\00:49:11.78 It says, starts out with what, pastor? 00:49:11.81\00:49:13.62 Remember, 00:49:13.65\00:49:14.98 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 00:49:15.02\00:49:17.12 You know, it's not a drudgery. 00:49:17.15\00:49:19.12 The Sabbath is not a drudgery, 00:49:19.15\00:49:20.86 and God wants us to remember the Sabbath day. 00:49:20.89\00:49:23.36 And I just want to look briefly today at why it's important. 00:49:23.39\00:49:27.06 The Sabbath is a sign 00:49:27.10\00:49:29.06 or a covenant between God and His people. 00:49:29.10\00:49:31.93 You may just have time to jot some of these down, 00:49:31.97\00:49:33.54 but Ezekiel 20:12, says, 00:49:33.57\00:49:36.37 "Moreover, also I gave them my," what? 00:49:36.40\00:49:39.07 "My Sabbath to be a sign or a covenant 00:49:39.11\00:49:42.14 between Me and them, 00:49:42.18\00:49:43.65 that they might know that I am the Lord 00:49:43.68\00:49:45.18 that sanctifies them." 00:49:45.21\00:49:46.75 We've talked about a number of different signs 00:49:46.78\00:49:48.52 and covenants, 00:49:48.55\00:49:49.88 you know, we had in Genesis 17, we had this circumcision sign, 00:49:49.92\00:49:54.39 but here you've got the Sabbath as a sign between us and God. 00:49:54.42\00:49:59.79 The Sabbath was a sign 00:49:59.83\00:50:01.20 and Jill mentioned this, the Sinaitic, the Sinaic... 00:50:01.23\00:50:04.50 Sinaitic. Sinaitic. Thank you. 00:50:04.53\00:50:06.27 All these people, they're just such theologians, 00:50:06.30\00:50:08.24 you know, I'm just here trying to keep up 00:50:08.27\00:50:09.97 with the Sinaitic covenant. 00:50:10.01\00:50:12.37 And here are just some reasons. 00:50:12.41\00:50:13.74 I have about five of them, but you can make your own list 00:50:13.78\00:50:15.38 and maybe that'd be a really fun Sabbath project for you 00:50:15.41\00:50:17.68 just to, to make a whole list of why we should remember. 00:50:17.71\00:50:20.68 So I have about five here today. 00:50:20.72\00:50:22.25 Some of them have been touched on briefly already. 00:50:22.28\00:50:24.35 But number one, 00:50:24.39\00:50:25.72 we remember God as our Creator, 00:50:25.75\00:50:28.06 by keeping the Sabbath. 00:50:28.09\00:50:29.99 Exodus 20:8-11. 00:50:30.03\00:50:32.23 And Jill and I, this is one of our, 00:50:32.26\00:50:33.60 if I can say tradition 00:50:33.63\00:50:34.96 is to actually recite the fourth commandment 00:50:35.00\00:50:36.63 usually Friday or on Sabbath. 00:50:36.67\00:50:38.60 And let's look at it together, 00:50:38.63\00:50:39.97 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 00:50:40.00\00:50:42.30 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: 00:50:42.34\00:50:45.54 But the seventh day 00:50:45.57\00:50:46.91 is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: 00:50:46.94\00:50:49.11 in it thou shalt not do any work, 00:50:49.14\00:50:51.61 thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, 00:50:51.65\00:50:53.78 thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, 00:50:53.82\00:50:55.75 nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger 00:50:55.78\00:50:57.32 that is within thy gates." 00:50:57.35\00:50:58.89 Verse 11, 00:50:58.92\00:51:00.56 "For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, 00:51:00.59\00:51:04.09 and all that in them is, 00:51:04.13\00:51:05.49 and rested on the seventh day: 00:51:05.53\00:51:07.33 wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, 00:51:07.36\00:51:09.73 and hallowed it." 00:51:09.76\00:51:11.10 So number one, we remember God is our creator 00:51:11.13\00:51:12.63 by keeping the Sabbath. 00:51:12.67\00:51:14.50 Number two, we remember God is our redeemer. 00:51:14.54\00:51:16.81 Jill was touching on that by keeping the Sabbath. 00:51:16.84\00:51:19.27 Deuteronomy 5:15. 00:51:19.31\00:51:21.11 And it says, 00:51:21.14\00:51:22.48 "And remembers that you were a slave 00:51:22.51\00:51:23.85 in the land of Egypt, 00:51:23.88\00:51:25.21 and the Lord your God brought you out from there 00:51:25.25\00:51:27.35 by a mighty hand, 00:51:27.38\00:51:28.85 and by an outstretched arm, 00:51:28.88\00:51:30.69 therefore the Lord God commanded you 00:51:30.72\00:51:33.05 to keep the Sabbath." 00:51:33.09\00:51:34.42 So the children of Israel were slaves in Egypt. 00:51:34.46\00:51:36.79 The Sabbath is reminder to them on a weekly basis 00:51:36.83\00:51:38.79 that God brought them out. 00:51:38.83\00:51:40.16 But I like for those of us 00:51:40.20\00:51:41.53 we can remember that God is our redeemer 00:51:41.56\00:51:43.57 on a weekly basis. 00:51:43.60\00:51:45.67 Number three, 00:51:45.70\00:51:47.04 we remember God is our sanctifier 00:51:47.07\00:51:49.37 by keeping the Sabbath. 00:51:49.40\00:51:51.07 You can look up Exodus 31:13. 00:51:51.11\00:51:54.08 And it says, 00:51:54.11\00:51:55.44 "Speak also to the children of visual saying, 00:51:55.48\00:51:57.88 'Surely my Sabbath shall keep, you shall keep, 00:51:57.91\00:52:00.72 for it is a sign between Me and you 00:52:00.75\00:52:03.99 throughout your generations," 00:52:04.02\00:52:05.55 and that's powerful, 00:52:05.59\00:52:06.92 "that you may know that I am the Lord, 00:52:06.96\00:52:09.36 who sanctifies you." 00:52:09.39\00:52:11.56 So we remember God is our sanctifier 00:52:11.59\00:52:13.46 by keeping the Sabbath. 00:52:13.50\00:52:15.13 Number four, remember God is our sustainer. 00:52:15.16\00:52:17.53 Psalm 55:22, 00:52:17.57\00:52:18.90 "Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain you, 00:52:18.93\00:52:23.17 he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved." 00:52:23.20\00:52:26.64 Number five, we remember God 00:52:26.68\00:52:28.11 as our restorer of relationships. 00:52:28.14\00:52:30.95 Romans 5:10. 00:52:30.98\00:52:33.11 Roman 5, Romans 5:10 says, 00:52:33.15\00:52:34.85 "For if, when we were enemies, 00:52:34.88\00:52:37.02 we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, 00:52:37.05\00:52:40.59 much more, having been reconciled, 00:52:40.62\00:52:43.43 we shall be saved by his life." 00:52:43.46\00:52:45.69 So we can remember God 00:52:45.73\00:52:47.06 as our restorer of our relationships. 00:52:47.10\00:52:48.50 You know, as we're working on this study, 00:52:48.53\00:52:49.86 you know, Jill and I were just trying, 00:52:49.90\00:52:51.23 kind of comparing notes and you can make a, 00:52:51.27\00:52:52.67 an incredible list of, 00:52:52.70\00:52:54.67 you know, who God is and what the Sabbath is to you. 00:52:54.70\00:52:59.24 And just so many fun things you can do on the Sabbath day. 00:52:59.27\00:53:01.41 Anyway, God restored our relationship to Him 00:53:01.44\00:53:03.68 by the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. 00:53:03.71\00:53:07.12 And if you're studying along in the quarterly, 00:53:07.15\00:53:08.68 you can look at this quote, which I really liked, it's in, 00:53:08.72\00:53:11.39 comes from the lesson, and it says, 00:53:11.42\00:53:13.15 "Again, when we understand the covenant 00:53:13.19\00:53:15.99 to be a relationship, 00:53:16.02\00:53:17.46 Pastor John talked about that earlier, 00:53:17.49\00:53:20.03 "between God and humankind, 00:53:20.06\00:53:22.40 the Sabbath which can greatly help 00:53:22.43\00:53:24.37 strengthen that relationship 00:53:24.40\00:53:26.17 comes in to specific prominence or importance." 00:53:26.20\00:53:31.17 You know, as we think about the word 00:53:31.21\00:53:33.68 remember in our just day to day relationships. 00:53:33.71\00:53:36.64 I'm going to bring up the marriage example as well. 00:53:36.68\00:53:39.41 You know, if you're a married couple, 00:53:39.45\00:53:40.78 usually you should be, 00:53:40.82\00:53:42.15 your anniversary 00:53:42.18\00:53:43.52 is a significant date to remember, right? 00:53:43.55\00:53:45.89 Husbands, sometimes we're talked about 00:53:45.92\00:53:47.32 is not remembering the anniversaries, 00:53:47.36\00:53:49.26 and think about for Jill and myself 00:53:49.29\00:53:51.39 September 22, 00:53:51.43\00:53:52.83 the year we were married, it was 2002. 00:53:52.86\00:53:55.60 But if I came to her and said, 00:53:55.63\00:53:57.33 "Sweetie, oh, when is our anniversary? 00:53:57.37\00:53:59.67 Was it last month or is it coming up?" 00:53:59.70\00:54:02.60 That would not make her feel very good. 00:54:02.64\00:54:04.47 Like is this relationship even mean anything to you? 00:54:04.51\00:54:07.78 Okay, I know she likes flowers. 00:54:07.81\00:54:09.54 But instead of getting her flowers, 00:54:09.58\00:54:10.91 what if I continue to buy her vacuum cleaners 00:54:10.95\00:54:12.61 or I don't know something else. 00:54:12.65\00:54:15.18 Folks, you know what I'm saying, 00:54:15.22\00:54:16.55 that would not be very good to build a relationship. 00:54:16.58\00:54:19.85 God is asking us 00:54:19.89\00:54:21.22 to remember Him on the Sabbath day. 00:54:21.26\00:54:24.33 You know, I'm thinking about also relationship. 00:54:24.36\00:54:28.10 When you see someone a couple together, 00:54:28.13\00:54:29.73 and you know that they're in tune with each other, 00:54:29.76\00:54:31.73 you can usually see that, 00:54:31.77\00:54:33.10 point that out like, oh, wow, boy, yeah, there are a couple, 00:54:33.13\00:54:35.70 they are together. 00:54:35.74\00:54:37.07 Well, how is that possible? 00:54:37.11\00:54:38.44 Because they've spent time together, 00:54:38.47\00:54:39.81 they've built that relationship. 00:54:39.84\00:54:41.18 So with God, let's think about that 00:54:41.21\00:54:42.54 with our relationship with Him. 00:54:42.58\00:54:43.91 He has asked us to remember. 00:54:43.95\00:54:46.78 And He's asked us to remember, 00:54:46.82\00:54:48.68 not because it's a drudgery when it comes around Friday, 00:54:48.72\00:54:50.62 like, oh, boy, gotta remember this. 00:54:50.65\00:54:52.69 I gotta remember, Friday night start Sabbath. 00:54:52.72\00:54:55.09 No, to me, remember, it's a great thing. 00:54:55.12\00:54:57.73 Remember, remember me as your creator, 00:54:57.76\00:54:59.49 remember me as your redeemer. 00:54:59.53\00:55:01.30 But then I also think was beautiful with this whole, 00:55:01.33\00:55:03.77 remembering who God is, is that He never forgets us. 00:55:03.80\00:55:07.87 He's asking us to remember Him in this special day, 00:55:07.90\00:55:11.21 but we also can gain a promise in the Bible. 00:55:11.24\00:55:14.34 It's in Isaiah 49:15 that we talks about, 00:55:14.38\00:55:18.61 "As the mother may forget her sucking child," 00:55:18.65\00:55:21.48 usually they don't. 00:55:21.52\00:55:22.85 God says, "I will never forget you." 00:55:22.88\00:55:25.35 I want to just enclose in here. 00:55:25.39\00:55:27.06 This comes from the SDA Bible commentary. 00:55:27.09\00:55:28.52 It says, 00:55:28.56\00:55:29.89 "Every act of God on our behalf 00:55:29.92\00:55:33.13 constitutes a reason why we should remember." 00:55:33.16\00:55:35.90 Every act of God, 00:55:35.93\00:55:37.27 isn't that powerful of why we should remember? 00:55:37.30\00:55:39.20 That is to reflect upon, 00:55:39.23\00:55:40.90 acknowledge and appreciate this love 00:55:40.94\00:55:43.54 and beneficent care. 00:55:43.57\00:55:45.57 Yeah. 00:55:45.61\00:55:46.94 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:55:46.98\00:55:48.31 I'm glad you don't get her vacuum cleaners. 00:55:48.34\00:55:49.68 I don't. 00:55:49.71\00:55:51.75 Yay! 00:55:51.78\00:55:53.11 You know, in lesson seven, 00:55:53.15\00:55:54.48 she also mentioned about the toast. 00:55:54.52\00:55:55.85 I'm so thankful she remembers to keep my toast 00:55:55.88\00:55:57.22 in lesson seven, 00:55:57.25\00:55:58.59 a couple quarterly lessons back, 00:55:58.62\00:55:59.95 you know, she remembers I like my toast crunchy, but... 00:55:59.99\00:56:01.86 Nice. All right. 00:56:01.89\00:56:03.22 Well, we have just a little while. 00:56:03.26\00:56:04.59 Let's go back and get some final thoughts. 00:56:04.63\00:56:05.96 Yes, very quickly. 00:56:05.99\00:56:07.33 The Sabbath is not something to forget 00:56:07.36\00:56:10.00 unless Jesus is someone to forget. 00:56:10.03\00:56:13.30 If you love Me, keep My commandments. 00:56:13.34\00:56:15.10 The Sabbath is a constant perpetual indicator 00:56:15.14\00:56:18.77 that we love our Lord 00:56:18.81\00:56:20.14 and we do not want to forget Him. 00:56:20.18\00:56:21.68 Amen. 00:56:21.71\00:56:23.04 The Sabbath is a covenant sign of grace. 00:56:23.08\00:56:24.41 I think of Mark 2, 00:56:24.45\00:56:26.48 "The Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath." 00:56:26.51\00:56:29.05 What a privilege is ours 00:56:29.08\00:56:31.29 to walk in covenant relationship with Jesus. 00:56:31.32\00:56:35.66 And the Sabbath is a sign 00:56:35.69\00:56:38.79 of God's continuing grace 00:56:38.83\00:56:41.86 of His continuing process of salvation. 00:56:41.90\00:56:45.43 As pastor said, and one other, 00:56:45.47\00:56:48.60 we have been saved, we are being saved, 00:56:48.64\00:56:51.47 there was justification, sanctification, 00:56:51.51\00:56:54.51 and we will be saved regardless of tithe. 00:56:54.54\00:56:57.95 Amen. 00:56:57.98\00:56:59.31 You know, Pastor Ryan, again, I think just for me, 00:56:59.35\00:57:01.15 the Sabbath, 00:57:01.18\00:57:02.52 what a time to build the relationship 00:57:02.55\00:57:04.05 has been talked about with our Lord and creator, 00:57:04.09\00:57:06.52 our redeemer and our friend. 00:57:06.55\00:57:09.29 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:57:09.32\00:57:10.73 You know, like you, Shelley, 00:57:10.76\00:57:12.36 I wasn't raised Seventh-day Adventists. 00:57:12.39\00:57:13.96 So, you know, for many, many years, 00:57:14.00\00:57:15.76 I did not keep the Sabbath holy, 00:57:15.80\00:57:18.53 just because I was unaware, 00:57:18.57\00:57:19.90 wasn't knowledgeable about it. 00:57:19.93\00:57:21.50 But praise the Lord, 00:57:21.54\00:57:22.87 the moment the Lord showed me the beauty 00:57:22.90\00:57:24.81 and the power of the message of the Sabbath. 00:57:24.84\00:57:27.41 I didn't go into it with this, 00:57:27.44\00:57:28.78 oh, you know, I can't mow my grass anymore on Sabbath. 00:57:28.81\00:57:32.08 Oh, I can't go shopping anymore. 00:57:32.11\00:57:34.08 It was a blessing.
