One word. 00:02:14.83\00:02:16.50 One word, two letters. Okay. 00:02:16.53\00:02:18.90 Well, if you would pray for us, then we can get going. 00:02:18.93\00:02:23.20 Holy Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, 00:02:23.24\00:02:25.37 grateful for the gift of Your Word 00:02:25.41\00:02:27.24 and Your covenant of salvation, 00:02:27.28\00:02:29.68 which You extended from the very beginning, 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.68 Adam and Eve, all the way down through the history of time. 00:02:31.71\00:02:34.68 We ask right now 00:02:34.72\00:02:36.05 for the anointing of Your Holy Spirit, 00:02:36.08\00:02:37.65 that You would open up our minds and hearts 00:02:37.69\00:02:39.75 to receive what You have for us in Jesus' name. 00:02:39.79\00:02:43.06 Amen. Amen. 00:02:43.09\00:02:44.59 Thank you so much. 00:02:44.63\00:02:46.29 And by the way, if you don't have a Bible, 00:02:46.33\00:02:47.93 just go ahead and open it up and get something to write 00:02:47.96\00:02:50.20 because we like to communicate things 00:02:50.23\00:02:51.57 that may be of interest to you. 00:02:51.60\00:02:54.34 The election of grace, 00:02:54.37\00:02:55.70 we've been talking all week long 00:02:55.74\00:02:57.07 and actually all quarter long often. 00:02:57.11\00:02:59.17 Now this lesson number eight about the covenants, 00:02:59.21\00:03:01.91 the everlasting covenants, 00:03:01.94\00:03:03.28 the salvific covenants that the Lord established, 00:03:03.31\00:03:06.65 the Davidic covenant, the Mosaic covenant, 00:03:06.68\00:03:09.65 different covenants, the Noahic covenant. 00:03:09.68\00:03:12.32 We find that all through the Bible, 00:03:12.35\00:03:14.26 there's really only been one covenant 00:03:14.29\00:03:15.86 because there's only one God, 00:03:15.89\00:03:17.53 but He has confirmed and reaffirmed that 00:03:17.56\00:03:19.36 covenant from generation to generation 00:03:19.39\00:03:21.90 up until the point where we have the phrase 00:03:21.93\00:03:25.03 the New Covenant 00:03:25.07\00:03:26.40 in the Book of Hebrews Chapter 10. 00:03:26.43\00:03:28.14 And we find today that in all of this law keeping, 00:03:28.17\00:03:32.57 we have to understand that 00:03:32.61\00:03:34.38 without the law, 00:03:34.41\00:03:37.18 there will be no need for grace. 00:03:37.21\00:03:40.15 I want to make that very clear. 00:03:40.18\00:03:41.72 So when we talk about the covenant 00:03:41.75\00:03:43.32 and the Ten Commandments is, 00:03:43.35\00:03:45.59 in fact, the transcript of God's covenant, 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.09 but even more than that, 00:03:48.12\00:03:49.46 the transcript of His character. 00:03:49.49\00:03:51.39 We have to understand where there is no law, 00:03:51.43\00:03:55.10 there is no need for grace. 00:03:55.13\00:03:58.63 Now let me not run past that 00:03:58.67\00:04:00.94 because somebody watching might say, 00:04:00.97\00:04:03.10 but doesn't the Bible say 00:04:03.14\00:04:04.47 we're saved by grace through faith 00:04:04.51\00:04:06.54 and that not of ourselves. 00:04:06.57\00:04:08.11 It is a gift of God, 00:04:08.14\00:04:09.48 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 00:04:09.51\00:04:12.68 That's completely true. 00:04:12.71\00:04:14.68 And we embrace and believe that 00:04:14.72\00:04:16.05 because it is in fact God's Word, 00:04:16.08\00:04:18.05 But would you need grace if there was no law? 00:04:18.09\00:04:21.22 Let me give one quick illustration. 00:04:21.26\00:04:24.36 As I say, confession is good for the soul, 00:04:24.39\00:04:26.06 heart and the reputation. 00:04:26.09\00:04:27.80 A couple of years ago, well, actually in 2006, 00:04:27.83\00:04:30.70 I was driving to New York, 00:04:30.73\00:04:32.77 and I was going to clean out my dad's apartment. 00:04:32.80\00:04:36.00 He had passed away. 00:04:36.04\00:04:37.37 He lived downtown New York City and I was driving my SUV. 00:04:37.41\00:04:40.78 My wife was with me. 00:04:40.81\00:04:42.14 This was before they had those little portable GPSs 00:04:42.18\00:04:43.91 that you put on the dashboard. 00:04:43.95\00:04:45.81 As a matter of fact, 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.18 I had my big old honking laptop, 00:04:47.22\00:04:49.52 Ryan, right there in my center console. 00:04:49.55\00:04:52.29 And I was trying to look at my speed 00:04:52.32\00:04:53.66 and what direction to go. 00:04:53.69\00:04:55.86 It was an archaic, 00:04:55.89\00:04:57.53 they didn't have it on cell phones. 00:04:57.56\00:04:58.93 It was an older small dashboard GPSs, 00:04:58.96\00:05:02.70 but I'm looking at my laptop, 00:05:02.73\00:05:04.07 this big 12 inch screen driving, looking, driving. 00:05:04.10\00:05:07.94 And I kept going faster and faster and faster 00:05:07.97\00:05:10.37 through the state of Indiana, 00:05:10.41\00:05:13.27 I was going 87 miles an hour when I saw a highway patrolman 00:05:13.31\00:05:17.78 and he was blocked by this large trailer truck. 00:05:17.81\00:05:20.42 So as, as I came around the curve there he was, 00:05:20.45\00:05:22.72 and his lights came on immediately. 00:05:22.75\00:05:25.55 Well, I decided to slow down 00:05:25.59\00:05:27.32 because I knew he wasn't coming out 00:05:27.36\00:05:29.79 to give me a sandwich or anything. 00:05:29.82\00:05:31.19 He was coming out to have a conversation. 00:05:31.23\00:05:33.33 And I thought, well, I'm going to get an invitation today 00:05:33.36\00:05:35.46 to the courthouse in Indiana. 00:05:35.50\00:05:37.43 Not looking forward to it, but he pulled over and he says, 00:05:37.47\00:05:40.20 can I ask you a question? 00:05:40.24\00:05:41.84 Why are you going so fast? 00:05:41.87\00:05:43.71 I said, 00:05:43.74\00:05:45.07 "Honestly, officer, 00:05:45.11\00:05:46.44 I really wasn't looking at my speedometer. 00:05:46.47\00:05:48.14 I was looking down at my laptop." 00:05:48.18\00:05:49.58 And he looked over and he saw my laptop. 00:05:49.61\00:05:51.15 I said, 00:05:51.18\00:05:52.51 "I was trying to figure out what exit to get off next," 00:05:52.55\00:05:54.32 'cause I was getting close to the exit. 00:05:54.35\00:05:56.28 He said, "Do you realize how fast you were going?" 00:05:56.32\00:05:57.79 I said, "In the 80s." 00:05:57.82\00:06:00.12 He said, "I clocked you at 87 miles an hour." 00:06:00.16\00:06:05.19 License registration, it became to the point, 00:06:05.23\00:06:08.00 I gave him my license registration. 00:06:08.03\00:06:09.36 He said, 00:06:09.40\00:06:10.73 "Get your insurance card. I'll be right back." 00:06:10.77\00:06:12.10 Well, he came back and he tipped his hat back 00:06:12.13\00:06:14.00 and he said, 00:06:14.04\00:06:15.37 "And what's the emergency?" 00:06:15.40\00:06:17.37 I said, "Well really, there's no emergency, 00:06:17.41\00:06:19.24 but I'm going to New York. My dad passed away. 00:06:19.27\00:06:20.98 I'm clearing out his apartment." 00:06:21.01\00:06:22.38 And he looked up and he said, 00:06:22.41\00:06:23.75 "You know what? 00:06:23.78\00:06:25.11 You slow it down, we'll call it a day. 00:06:25.15\00:06:27.78 Is that all right?" 00:06:27.82\00:06:29.35 I said, "Thank you officer." 00:06:29.38\00:06:31.45 I was kind and cordial. 00:06:31.49\00:06:33.36 And he walked away, 00:06:33.39\00:06:34.72 gave me back my license and registration. 00:06:34.76\00:06:37.23 Now, did I say ugh? 00:06:37.26\00:06:42.83 No, I pulled off. 00:06:42.86\00:06:45.33 And I stayed about five miles an hour 00:06:45.37\00:06:47.37 under the speed limit for a long time, 00:06:47.40\00:06:51.21 because I knew that I had violated the law 00:06:51.24\00:06:55.21 and I just received grace. 00:06:55.24\00:06:58.41 So I want you to understand today 00:06:58.45\00:06:59.78 when we talk about the election of grace. 00:06:59.81\00:07:01.92 Grace has never been separated from the law of God. 00:07:01.95\00:07:05.72 As a matter of fact, 00:07:05.75\00:07:07.09 look at some very powerful passages 00:07:07.12\00:07:09.56 on the context of grace and law in the framework of salvation. 00:07:09.59\00:07:13.19 I want you to get that, 00:07:13.23\00:07:14.56 because the election of grace 00:07:14.60\00:07:15.93 is something that the Lord extends 00:07:15.96\00:07:17.30 to every one of us, 00:07:17.33\00:07:18.67 and the memory text for the week 00:07:18.70\00:07:20.67 is Deuteronomy 7:9. 00:07:20.70\00:07:22.70 Let's start with that. 00:07:22.74\00:07:24.07 Deuteronomy 7:9, the memory text of the week. 00:07:24.11\00:07:27.38 Notice what the Lord says very clearly. 00:07:27.41\00:07:30.91 And by the way, Deuteronomy the book is, 00:07:30.95\00:07:33.92 in fact, a second canonical representation 00:07:33.95\00:07:37.19 of the generation that grew up now 00:07:37.22\00:07:39.75 in the wilderness journey. 00:07:39.79\00:07:41.32 Exodus was, they were probably young kids 00:07:41.36\00:07:43.43 are not understanding very well, 00:07:43.46\00:07:45.23 or they probably weren't even born yet. 00:07:45.26\00:07:47.33 But now this book is to the new generation, 00:07:47.36\00:07:50.83 Deuteronomy 7:9, 00:07:50.87\00:07:53.07 "Therefore know that the Lord, your God, 00:07:53.10\00:07:55.87 He is God, 00:07:55.90\00:07:57.44 the faithful God 00:07:57.47\00:07:58.81 who keeps covenant and mercy 00:07:58.84\00:08:01.81 for a thousand generations 00:08:01.84\00:08:05.15 with those who love Him and," what? 00:08:05.18\00:08:07.82 "Keep His commandments." 00:08:07.85\00:08:10.79 That didn't even change 00:08:10.82\00:08:12.15 because Jesus, John 14:15 says, 00:08:12.19\00:08:15.12 "If you love Me, keep My commandments." 00:08:15.16\00:08:19.13 That didn't change 00:08:19.16\00:08:20.50 this covenant to a thousand generations. 00:08:20.53\00:08:22.63 And I will tell you, 00:08:22.66\00:08:24.00 there was not a thousand generations 00:08:24.03\00:08:25.37 between this statement and the statement of Jesus. 00:08:25.40\00:08:28.07 So the covenant conditions haven't changed. 00:08:28.10\00:08:30.31 The Lord says, I will do whatever you want me to do, 00:08:30.34\00:08:32.97 not whatever, 00:08:33.01\00:08:34.34 "But I will fulfill my promises if you fulfill your obligation. 00:08:34.38\00:08:38.51 If you keep My commandments, 00:08:38.55\00:08:39.98 I will be the God who continues to extend to you 00:08:40.02\00:08:43.22 the mercy and the justice that you deserve." 00:08:43.25\00:08:46.42 But now let's go to 2 Peter 3:18. 00:08:46.45\00:08:49.56 Want you to see something 00:08:49.59\00:08:50.93 because we are saved by grace through faith 00:08:50.96\00:08:53.09 in Christ alone. 00:08:53.13\00:08:54.46 But do we make void the law through faith? 00:08:54.50\00:08:56.80 As one of our past lessons, I think Pastor Ryan Day says, 00:08:56.83\00:09:00.07 no, God forbid we establish it. 00:09:00.10\00:09:02.60 But I want you to see how we are growing 00:09:02.64\00:09:04.44 because we talk about salvation here 00:09:04.47\00:09:06.31 and the everlasting covenant of grace 00:09:06.34\00:09:08.61 as well as the everlasting covenant of law, 00:09:08.64\00:09:11.65 all is in the framework of our growth as Christians. 00:09:11.68\00:09:14.58 Look at this, 2 Peter 3:18, 00:09:14.62\00:09:17.62 "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord 00:09:17.65\00:09:21.12 and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:09:21.16\00:09:23.49 To Him be the glory both now and forever." 00:09:23.53\00:09:25.89 Want to make a very important point here. 00:09:25.93\00:09:27.76 We don't grow into grace, we grow in grace. 00:09:27.80\00:09:31.53 A fish doesn't swim into the sea, 00:09:31.57\00:09:33.60 it swims in the sea. 00:09:33.64\00:09:35.40 A plant doesn't grow into the pot, 00:09:35.44\00:09:37.14 it grows in the pot. 00:09:37.17\00:09:39.11 We are growing in grace, meaning we are in it already. 00:09:39.14\00:09:43.38 We don't get grace more and more every day, 00:09:43.41\00:09:46.31 we are growing in that grace. 00:09:46.35\00:09:48.42 So why do we need to grow in that grace? 00:09:48.45\00:09:50.99 Because we still have this frail thing 00:09:51.02\00:09:53.02 called the human flesh. 00:09:53.05\00:09:54.82 We are not glorified yet. 00:09:54.86\00:09:56.79 We are still being sanctified. 00:09:56.83\00:09:59.03 And so when it says, for by grace are you saved, 00:09:59.06\00:10:01.66 a better way of saying that, 00:10:01.70\00:10:03.03 for by grace, you are being saved 00:10:03.06\00:10:06.10 because Isaiah 25:9 says, 00:10:06.13\00:10:08.87 "He will save us." 00:10:08.90\00:10:10.81 Paul in the Corinthians to the Corinthians says, 00:10:10.84\00:10:13.74 "We are being saved." 00:10:13.78\00:10:15.28 So we need grace. 00:10:15.31\00:10:16.64 I know, you know, you need grace. 00:10:16.68\00:10:18.28 I know that every morning I wake up 00:10:18.31\00:10:19.65 before I put my feet in my shoes, 00:10:19.68\00:10:21.95 I got to pray. 00:10:21.98\00:10:23.32 Lord, give me grace today 00:10:23.35\00:10:24.69 that I can reflect Your character. 00:10:24.72\00:10:26.22 So I want to make sure that we can clearly see 00:10:26.25\00:10:28.99 that the author is making it clear that 00:10:29.02\00:10:30.73 we all need grace, but let's continue. 00:10:30.76\00:10:33.29 Let's go to another one. 00:10:33.33\00:10:34.66 2 Corinthians 12:9. 00:10:34.70\00:10:36.87 Let's look at the election of grace 00:10:36.90\00:10:38.70 and see it in a bounding beautiful way. 00:10:38.73\00:10:41.80 2 Corinthians 12:9, 00:10:41.84\00:10:44.64 The Lord is talking about this grace, 00:10:44.67\00:10:46.84 and why would we need grace? 00:10:46.88\00:10:48.64 Because as we drive, 00:10:48.68\00:10:50.15 there's this constant speed limit 00:10:50.18\00:10:52.91 that says to us, ah, 25 now 30, 40, 50, 00:10:52.95\00:10:58.29 it's continually changing. 00:10:58.32\00:11:00.16 And if we ignore the fact that law always exists, 00:11:00.19\00:11:03.76 we might be asking for grace. 00:11:03.79\00:11:06.06 2 Corinthians 12:9. 00:11:06.09\00:11:08.46 Shelley, do you have that? Yes, I do. 00:11:08.50\00:11:10.70 2 Corinthians, 12:9. 00:11:10.73\00:11:13.10 One of my favorites. 00:11:13.13\00:11:14.47 "He said to me, My grace," 00:11:14.50\00:11:17.04 this is Christ speaking to Paul. 00:11:17.07\00:11:19.31 "My grace is sufficient for you, 00:11:19.34\00:11:21.64 for My strength is made perfect in weakness. 00:11:21.68\00:11:25.41 Therefore most gladly 00:11:25.45\00:11:26.78 I will get rather boast in my infirmities, 00:11:26.82\00:11:29.95 that the power of Christ may rest upon me." 00:11:29.98\00:11:32.79 The Apostle Paul said, 00:11:32.82\00:11:34.16 "Hey, if there's anybody that you're looking for, 00:11:34.19\00:11:35.96 that has infirmities, I have it." 00:11:35.99\00:11:38.39 We all have infirmities. What is that weakness? 00:11:38.43\00:11:41.50 Now, why do we need grace? 00:11:41.53\00:11:43.20 A second most beautiful aspect. 00:11:43.23\00:11:45.33 The Lord is saying to us, you're weak, but I'm perfect. 00:11:45.37\00:11:49.20 My strength is perfect. 00:11:49.24\00:11:52.17 My, his strength is perfect. 00:11:52.21\00:11:54.71 Now watch this. 00:11:54.74\00:11:56.08 He covers us in his salvation. 00:11:56.11\00:11:58.21 He imparts to us a strength 00:11:58.25\00:11:59.85 that we don't even own or possess. 00:11:59.88\00:12:02.05 And then he says, 00:12:02.08\00:12:03.42 as weak as you are, I'm still strong. 00:12:03.45\00:12:06.19 His strength is made perfect in our weakness. 00:12:06.22\00:12:08.86 Now, why is Paul boasting? 00:12:08.89\00:12:10.99 Because when I know 00:12:11.03\00:12:12.36 I have access to a power that never fails. 00:12:12.39\00:12:14.96 When I know I have access to a righteousness 00:12:15.00\00:12:17.77 that God always sees as perfect, 00:12:17.80\00:12:20.17 and I'm covered by that. 00:12:20.20\00:12:21.70 It's like scaffolding. 00:12:21.74\00:12:23.30 It's like covering a house that's about to be fumigated. 00:12:23.34\00:12:26.07 We don't see the house, we see the covering. 00:12:26.11\00:12:28.38 When the Lord covers us with His righteousness, 00:12:28.41\00:12:31.21 we must say, thank God for His perfect salvation 00:12:31.25\00:12:35.68 that is made strong in my infirmity, 00:12:35.72\00:12:39.19 in my human weakness. 00:12:39.22\00:12:41.09 But what does the law have to do with anything? 00:12:41.12\00:12:43.19 Let's go to Romans 5:20. 00:12:43.22\00:12:45.36 Let's go to Romans 5:20. 00:12:45.39\00:12:47.20 And it's going to be a while 00:12:47.23\00:12:48.60 before I forget that illustration 00:12:48.63\00:12:50.00 that Pastor Ryan Day did with the cotton in his head. 00:12:50.03\00:12:52.90 But this is why he did it. 00:12:52.93\00:12:55.34 This is why he did it. 00:12:55.37\00:12:57.14 Romans 5:20. 00:12:57.17\00:12:58.51 The Bible says, 00:12:58.54\00:12:59.87 "Moreover the law entered 00:12:59.91\00:13:02.08 that the offense might abound. 00:13:02.11\00:13:05.71 But where sin abounds, grace abounds much more." 00:13:05.75\00:13:11.49 Now watch this. 00:13:11.52\00:13:13.56 I got pulled over 00:13:13.59\00:13:14.99 and I just found out 00:13:15.02\00:13:16.46 I was 22 miles over the speed limit. 00:13:16.49\00:13:20.13 According to the law, 00:13:20.16\00:13:23.06 20 miles over the speed limit 00:13:23.10\00:13:25.03 is good enough for them to take my license. 00:13:25.07\00:13:28.70 But the police officer said, 00:13:28.74\00:13:31.34 "You slow it down. We will call it a day." 00:13:31.37\00:13:34.94 You know, friends, when you fall, 00:13:34.98\00:13:37.35 our Savior, Jesus Christ says, 00:13:37.38\00:13:39.58 do you know, I have every right 00:13:39.61\00:13:42.72 to condemn you to death 00:13:42.75\00:13:45.29 because the wages of sin is death. 00:13:45.32\00:13:47.79 But what I'm going to do for you today, 00:13:47.82\00:13:49.56 because your infirmity is so clear to me, 00:13:49.59\00:13:51.79 in your weakness, 00:13:51.83\00:13:53.16 my strength is going to be made perfect. 00:13:53.19\00:13:54.90 That's the grace of God. 00:13:54.93\00:13:56.36 The election of grace is not saying 00:13:56.40\00:13:58.63 that you are a great sinner alone, 00:13:58.67\00:14:01.64 but the election of grace is saying, 00:14:01.67\00:14:03.17 I'm a greater savior than you are a sinner. 00:14:03.20\00:14:06.57 You see in the Ark of the Covenant, 00:14:06.61\00:14:10.28 the Ten Commandments of God are there, 00:14:10.31\00:14:13.01 but above the Ark of the Covenant 00:14:13.05\00:14:15.35 is the mercy seat. 00:14:15.38\00:14:17.42 Far greater than my sin is God's mercy. 00:14:17.45\00:14:20.06 That is the election of grace. 00:14:20.09\00:14:22.92 Amen. Thank you. 00:14:22.96\00:14:24.39 That perfectly sets up my day Monday, 00:14:24.43\00:14:27.93 Ties That Bind. 00:14:27.96\00:14:31.33 I love what Paul wrote to Timothy 00:14:31.37\00:14:33.47 in 2 Timothy 1:9-10. 00:14:33.50\00:14:35.74 We won't turn there, 00:14:35.77\00:14:37.11 but he said that 00:14:37.14\00:14:38.47 grace was given to us in Christ Jesus. 00:14:38.51\00:14:42.48 Before time began, 00:14:42.51\00:14:44.65 this is, he's alluding to Revelation 13:8, 00:14:44.68\00:14:48.28 "The Lamb who was slain 00:14:48.32\00:14:49.78 from the foundation of the world." 00:14:49.82\00:14:52.39 Where Hebrews 13:20 says, 00:14:52.42\00:14:54.29 "Christ's blood is the blood of the everlasting covenant." 00:14:54.32\00:14:58.39 So all of God's, as you said, 00:14:58.43\00:15:01.63 all of His covenants are a progressive unfolding 00:15:01.66\00:15:06.37 of this everlasting covenant of redemption. 00:15:06.40\00:15:10.21 Last week, we looked at Moses 00:15:10.24\00:15:13.61 and when he went up to the mountain 00:15:13.64\00:15:16.85 and God gave to Moses, 00:15:16.88\00:15:19.78 he'd already spoken 00:15:19.81\00:15:21.15 the Ten Commandments to the people. 00:15:21.18\00:15:22.52 But when Moses went back up to the mountain, 00:15:22.55\00:15:24.82 after they'd already heard that, 00:15:24.85\00:15:27.92 he received from the Lord, 00:15:27.96\00:15:32.89 what you will say are civil laws. 00:15:32.93\00:15:37.03 It was to... It was the constitution 00:15:37.07\00:15:39.70 for the new nation of Israel. 00:15:39.73\00:15:42.34 That's what it was. 00:15:42.37\00:15:43.97 And the Ten Commandments were the Bill of Rights. 00:15:44.01\00:15:48.54 It's how God that they were going to treat God 00:15:48.58\00:15:50.71 how they were going to treat one another. 00:15:50.75\00:15:53.18 And so, then it also had the ceremonial laws, 00:15:53.21\00:15:57.15 the sacrificial laws, the special Sabbaths, 00:15:57.19\00:16:01.69 you know, the annual Sabbaths. 00:16:01.72\00:16:03.29 I'm not speaking of the seventh day Sabbath, 00:16:03.32\00:16:05.86 but the festivals, the annual Sabbaths, 00:16:05.89\00:16:08.23 the drink offerings, meal offerings, et cetera. 00:16:08.26\00:16:12.20 This is found in Moses, Moses... 00:16:12.23\00:16:14.90 Exodus 20:22-23, 22. 00:16:14.94\00:16:20.21 So we read last week in Exodus 24:7 00:16:20.24\00:16:25.08 that Moses received this instruction. 00:16:25.11\00:16:28.65 And now Moses writes this, may be on papyrus or skin. 00:16:28.68\00:16:33.86 He writes this 00:16:33.89\00:16:35.22 and what it's called the Book of the Covenant. 00:16:35.26\00:16:37.69 And then we looked 39 years later 00:16:37.73\00:16:40.10 when he reiterates the Book of the Covenant, 00:16:40.13\00:16:43.03 it is now called the Book of the Law. 00:16:43.06\00:16:46.20 It's according to Deuteronomy 31:26, 00:16:46.23\00:16:50.21 he rewrites and reiterates 00:16:50.24\00:16:52.51 all of this in his final sermon. 00:16:52.54\00:16:54.84 And God tells him to put the Book of the Law 00:16:54.88\00:16:58.91 on the side of ark. 00:16:58.95\00:17:00.92 It was to stay in there as a witness against them 00:17:00.95\00:17:04.29 because it can, 00:17:04.32\00:17:05.65 it was the blessings and the curses, 00:17:05.69\00:17:11.09 but you've got the Ten Commandments 00:17:11.13\00:17:12.69 in the ark permanence. 00:17:12.73\00:17:14.93 The Book of the Covenant, 00:17:14.96\00:17:16.46 which is now the Book of the Law 00:17:16.50\00:17:18.17 on the side of the ark. 00:17:18.20\00:17:19.53 This is a temporary position 00:17:19.57\00:17:23.30 because it is the constitution for the new nation of Israel. 00:17:23.34\00:17:27.81 Now God says in Deuteronomy 29:13, 00:17:27.84\00:17:32.45 His purpose for the covenant was that 00:17:32.48\00:17:35.85 "He might establish the people 00:17:35.88\00:17:39.35 as a people for Himself, 00:17:39.39\00:17:42.62 and that He may be God to them." 00:17:42.66\00:17:47.00 However much we have stressed that salvation is by grace. 00:17:47.03\00:17:52.77 Grace is not a license to disobey. 00:17:52.80\00:17:56.71 Deuteronomy 4:13 says, 00:17:56.74\00:17:58.24 "He declared to you His covenant 00:17:58.27\00:17:59.67 which He commanded you to perform, 00:17:59.71\00:18:02.34 the Ten Commandments, 00:18:02.38\00:18:03.71 and He wrote them on two tablets of stone." 00:18:03.75\00:18:06.45 We saw last week that God wrote 00:18:06.48\00:18:08.75 these Ten Commandments both times, 00:18:08.78\00:18:10.99 the first time when Moses broke them 00:18:11.02\00:18:12.95 after the people broke the covenant. 00:18:12.99\00:18:14.66 But the second time, 00:18:14.69\00:18:16.02 and the commandments were written 00:18:16.06\00:18:17.49 on this stone tablets 00:18:17.53\00:18:18.99 on the front and on the back. 00:18:19.03\00:18:21.36 But they are the foundation 00:18:21.40\00:18:25.27 of God's government of love. 00:18:25.30\00:18:28.54 So the Ten Commandments, 00:18:28.57\00:18:31.11 as I said, are like the Bill of Rights 00:18:31.14\00:18:34.68 in the constitution of the Old Covenant. 00:18:34.71\00:18:37.81 It is how it defines love to the Creator 00:18:37.85\00:18:42.22 and love to your neighbor. 00:18:42.25\00:18:44.79 In the Ten Commandment 00:18:44.82\00:18:47.59 is also the heart of the New Covenant. 00:18:47.62\00:18:51.33 Let me share this with you. 00:18:51.36\00:18:52.93 Hebrews 8:10. 00:18:52.96\00:18:55.13 Speaking of the New Covenant, 00:18:55.16\00:18:57.73 God's law of love, 00:18:57.77\00:19:00.97 His instructions of love found in the Ten Commandments. 00:19:01.00\00:19:04.57 Hebrews 8:10, 00:19:04.61\00:19:06.68 He's speaking of the New Covenant, 00:19:06.71\00:19:08.14 He says, "This is the covenant 00:19:08.18\00:19:09.58 that I will make with the house of Israel 00:19:09.61\00:19:11.65 after those days, says the Lord. 00:19:11.68\00:19:13.62 I will put My laws in their mind 00:19:13.65\00:19:16.99 and write them on their hearts." 00:19:17.02\00:19:19.05 And then He's always saying, 00:19:19.09\00:19:20.89 "I will be their God, and they will be My people." 00:19:20.92\00:19:24.56 The Old Covenant, Moses was the mediator. 00:19:24.59\00:19:29.56 The New Covenant, Jesus is the mediator. 00:19:29.60\00:19:33.64 There's only one mediator between us and God 00:19:33.67\00:19:36.07 and that's Jesus. 00:19:36.10\00:19:37.47 The Old Covenant was the constitution. 00:19:37.51\00:19:42.51 It was laws 00:19:42.54\00:19:44.58 built on God's Ten Commandment principles 00:19:44.61\00:19:49.38 to govern the new nation of Israel. 00:19:49.42\00:19:54.12 Then in the New Covenant, 00:19:54.16\00:19:57.43 I mean the Old Covenant, 00:19:57.46\00:19:58.79 they get the constitution for Mount Sinai. 00:19:58.83\00:20:01.40 The New Covenant, 00:20:01.43\00:20:03.20 God's constitution is changed. 00:20:03.23\00:20:07.54 Those civil laws Christ came to magnify. 00:20:07.57\00:20:11.87 Where do we find the parallel 00:20:11.91\00:20:16.48 to the Book of the Covenant? 00:20:16.51\00:20:19.55 We find it on the Mount of Beatitudes. 00:20:19.58\00:20:24.55 Christ came 00:20:24.59\00:20:26.22 and He is now giving 00:20:26.25\00:20:28.32 a new constitution for a new Israel. 00:20:28.36\00:20:31.89 You know, Matthew, when he introduces the book, 00:20:31.93\00:20:36.56 the Sermon on the Mount, 00:20:36.60\00:20:38.63 He does it against the backdrop of Moses. 00:20:38.67\00:20:41.20 He's making a parallel. 00:20:41.24\00:20:44.44 And so Christ then gives us new 00:20:44.47\00:20:48.98 a new constitution. 00:20:49.01\00:20:50.85 Both covenants include the Ten Commandments, 00:20:50.88\00:20:54.12 and we have to remember, 00:20:54.15\00:20:57.15 the covenant is an arrangement. 00:20:57.19\00:21:01.42 God's covenants with a will, a testament. 00:21:01.46\00:21:04.73 That's why we call it the Old Testament, 00:21:04.76\00:21:06.13 the New Testament, 00:21:06.16\00:21:07.63 And the concept of an arrangement, 00:21:07.66\00:21:11.90 a relationship. 00:21:11.93\00:21:14.74 There's rules. 00:21:14.77\00:21:16.14 Aren't there boundaries in your relationship? 00:21:16.17\00:21:18.14 When you get married, you are taking one wife to you. 00:21:18.17\00:21:21.68 There are... See, boundaries define us. 00:21:21.71\00:21:26.05 They say what's acceptable and what's unacceptable. 00:21:26.08\00:21:29.22 And guess what? 00:21:29.25\00:21:30.59 Boundaries, we train people how to treat us. 00:21:30.62\00:21:33.96 So God is a boundary making God. 00:21:33.99\00:21:37.03 He said, 00:21:37.06\00:21:38.39 "These are the principles of love. 00:21:38.43\00:21:40.90 This is how you should love Me 00:21:40.93\00:21:42.60 with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength." 00:21:42.63\00:21:46.77 And then here's the principles of love 00:21:46.80\00:21:49.87 to your fellow human being. 00:21:49.90\00:21:51.61 This is the vertical grace, if you will. 00:21:51.64\00:21:54.61 And we, every partnership has boundaries, 00:21:54.64\00:22:00.45 rules, every marriage, 00:22:00.48\00:22:03.05 I mean, I can't imagine if JD's married me 00:22:03.08\00:22:06.25 and then just said the next week. 00:22:06.29\00:22:08.12 Well, I'm going to go out with so-and-so. 00:22:08.16\00:22:10.26 She appeals to me. 00:22:10.29\00:22:11.89 That wouldn't go over very well at all. 00:22:11.93\00:22:14.63 So, He makes these promises. 00:22:14.66\00:22:17.60 God makes all of the promises, 00:22:17.63\00:22:19.73 but then He asks us, 00:22:19.77\00:22:22.47 He invites us into relationship with Him. 00:22:22.50\00:22:25.27 I'll be your God. You'll be My child. 00:22:25.31\00:22:28.78 You'll be My daughter. 00:22:28.81\00:22:30.61 You'll be My son. 00:22:30.65\00:22:33.82 Come into relationship with Me. 00:22:33.85\00:22:36.32 And here's these boundaries. 00:22:36.35\00:22:39.15 Now, in the Old Covenant, 00:22:39.19\00:22:41.32 it contained various requirements 00:22:41.36\00:22:46.06 that were special, 00:22:46.09\00:22:50.57 are that were required for the special relationship. 00:22:50.60\00:22:53.60 But it's the same for the New Covenant. 00:22:53.64\00:22:55.40 And here's something that 00:22:55.44\00:22:57.01 I'm just gonna forget about my notes, 00:22:57.04\00:22:59.47 'cause I don't have time. 00:22:59.51\00:23:01.91 I remember when God started showing me 00:23:01.94\00:23:04.71 because you know, we talk about the ceremonial law 00:23:04.75\00:23:07.82 being nailed to the cross. 00:23:07.85\00:23:10.55 Well, so was the old civil law. 00:23:10.59\00:23:12.42 We no longer stone adulterers. 00:23:12.45\00:23:16.29 Praise God. 00:23:16.32\00:23:17.66 There'll be a lot of dead people 00:23:17.69\00:23:19.03 around in this day and age. 00:23:19.06\00:23:21.26 But, you know, people say, 00:23:21.30\00:23:23.10 "Oh, that Old Covenant looks impossible to keep." 00:23:23.13\00:23:26.43 Man, I'll tell you, how many times do you hear 00:23:26.47\00:23:29.40 the Sermon on the Mount? 00:23:29.44\00:23:31.01 And I've got this in a later one, 00:23:31.04\00:23:32.51 but Jesus came to magnify the law. 00:23:32.54\00:23:34.84 He said, you've heard it said that if you commit adultery, 00:23:34.88\00:23:39.31 you know, don't commit adultery. 00:23:39.35\00:23:40.68 I'm telling you, if you lust in your heart, 00:23:40.72\00:23:42.58 you're committing adultery. 00:23:42.62\00:23:43.95 You've heard it said that if you murder, it's wrong. 00:23:43.99\00:23:47.56 I'm telling you, if you hate your brother, 00:23:47.59\00:23:49.56 it's wrong. 00:23:49.59\00:23:50.93 So we've got to realize 00:23:50.96\00:23:54.40 that the reason it... 00:23:54.43\00:23:57.03 God let it look impossible 00:23:57.07\00:23:59.17 'cause the Sermon on the Mount looks impossible, isn't it? 00:23:59.20\00:24:02.10 I mean when you read it, 00:24:02.14\00:24:03.67 but that's because God wants us to understand. 00:24:03.71\00:24:08.84 We could never do it on our own. 00:24:08.88\00:24:11.38 It's always been His grace is sufficient. 00:24:11.41\00:24:13.95 His strength is made perfect. 00:24:13.98\00:24:15.92 And the new ceremonial laws, 00:24:15.95\00:24:17.65 Christ fulfilled all of those old laws. 00:24:17.69\00:24:21.12 It is the power of the cross. 00:24:21.16\00:24:23.86 It is Christ ministry in the heavenly places. 00:24:23.89\00:24:29.26 Amen. Thank you, Shelley. Thank you so much. 00:24:29.30\00:24:32.07 Well, we're going to take a short break 00:24:32.10\00:24:33.90 and come right back for Tuesday's lesson, 00:24:33.94\00:24:36.24 so don't go away. 00:24:36.27\00:24:37.61 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:43.58\00:24:44.91 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:24:44.95\00:24:47.08 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:24:47.12\00:24:50.29 Well, you can by visiting 3abnsabbathschoolpanel.com 00:24:50.32\00:24:55.16 A clean design makes it easy 00:24:55.19\00:24:57.69 to find the program you're looking for. 00:24:57.73\00:24:59.76 There are also links to the Adult Bible Study Guide 00:24:59.79\00:25:03.20 so you can follow along. 00:25:03.23\00:25:04.97 Sharing is easy. 00:25:05.00\00:25:06.33 Just click share 00:25:06.37\00:25:07.70 and choose your favorite social media. 00:25:07.74\00:25:09.50 Share a link, save a life for eternity. 00:25:09.54\00:25:14.74 Welcome back to our 3ABN Sabbath School Panel. 00:25:14.78\00:25:17.21 I'm going to turn the time over to Pastor John Dinzey. 00:25:17.25\00:25:20.02 It's yours. Thank you very much. 00:25:20.05\00:25:21.82 Now we are in Tuesday's portion 00:25:21.85\00:25:24.15 and the lesson for Tuesday 00:25:24.19\00:25:27.46 is entitled Law within the Covenant. 00:25:27.49\00:25:31.66 So when you think of the word law, 00:25:31.69\00:25:33.03 most people are right away thinking of, 00:25:33.06\00:25:35.76 well, the police, traffic and maybe jail, 00:25:35.80\00:25:39.80 but the laws of the Lord 00:25:39.83\00:25:41.40 were meant for the good of the people. 00:25:41.44\00:25:44.44 And when you see in the Bible, 00:25:44.47\00:25:46.51 the word law in the Old Testament, 00:25:46.54\00:25:49.34 normally it is the word Torah, 00:25:49.38\00:25:51.91 which means instruction 00:25:51.95\00:25:54.32 and also means teaching. 00:25:54.35\00:25:57.99 So normally 00:25:58.02\00:25:59.62 when you talk to the Jews about it, 00:25:59.65\00:26:01.36 when they say the Torah, 00:26:01.39\00:26:02.72 they're talking about 00:26:02.76\00:26:04.09 the first five books of the Bible, 00:26:04.13\00:26:06.70 books of Moses. 00:26:06.73\00:26:08.33 A question is brought here in the lesson 00:26:08.36\00:26:09.83 that I like to bring out. 00:26:09.86\00:26:11.20 Why do you suppose God provided so much instruction for Israel? 00:26:11.23\00:26:15.34 And we are going to turn 00:26:15.37\00:26:17.64 to Deuteronomy10:12-13. 00:26:17.67\00:26:22.41 And the Bible says there, 00:26:22.44\00:26:24.81 "And now, Israel, 00:26:24.85\00:26:26.31 what does the Lord your God require of you, 00:26:26.35\00:26:30.82 but to fear the Lord your God, 00:26:30.85\00:26:32.52 to walk in all His ways 00:26:32.55\00:26:34.62 and to love Him, 00:26:34.66\00:26:35.99 to serve the Lord your God 00:26:36.02\00:26:37.36 with all your heart and with all your soul, 00:26:37.39\00:26:41.03 and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes 00:26:41.06\00:26:44.60 which I command you today for your good?" 00:26:44.63\00:26:47.84 See, the laws and instructions 00:26:47.87\00:26:50.44 that the Lord gave to the people of Israel. 00:26:50.47\00:26:53.31 It included as well as 00:26:53.34\00:26:55.08 the issues of social life, religious life, 00:26:55.11\00:26:59.05 and even dietary laws and health laws are there. 00:26:59.08\00:27:04.19 It also, there were laws to protect the land. 00:27:04.22\00:27:06.42 And I'm going to share some scripture very soon here 00:27:06.45\00:27:09.09 that where the Lord told the people 00:27:09.12\00:27:11.59 that even the land had to rest. 00:27:11.63\00:27:14.36 And if we were to practice this today, 00:27:14.40\00:27:15.83 our food would be more nutritious 00:27:15.86\00:27:17.93 than it is now. 00:27:17.97\00:27:19.83 You see, through the Jewish nation, 00:27:19.87\00:27:21.47 I'm going to bring this out from Colossians, not Colossians 00:27:21.50\00:27:24.14 but the book Christ Object Lessons, 00:27:24.17\00:27:26.21 page 286. 00:27:26.24\00:27:27.58 Notice, this is beautiful. 00:27:27.61\00:27:28.94 "Through the Jewish nation 00:27:28.98\00:27:30.31 it was God's purpose 00:27:30.35\00:27:31.81 to impart rich blessings to all peoples. 00:27:31.85\00:27:35.68 Through Israel the way was to be prepared 00:27:35.72\00:27:38.45 for the diffusion of His light to the whole world. 00:27:38.49\00:27:41.86 The nations of the world, 00:27:41.89\00:27:44.03 through following corrupt practices, 00:27:44.06\00:27:45.99 had lost the knowledge of God. 00:27:46.03\00:27:48.06 Yet in His mercy 00:27:48.10\00:27:50.17 God did not blot them out of existence. 00:27:50.20\00:27:52.50 He purposed to give them opportunity 00:27:52.53\00:27:55.17 for becoming acquainted with Him 00:27:55.20\00:27:57.07 through His church. 00:27:57.11\00:27:58.57 He designed that the principles revealed 00:27:58.61\00:28:01.58 through His people 00:28:01.61\00:28:02.94 should be the means of restoring 00:28:02.98\00:28:04.61 the moral image of God in man." 00:28:04.65\00:28:08.18 You see the, for example, 00:28:08.22\00:28:10.39 the laws that the Lord gave to the people of Israel 00:28:10.42\00:28:13.25 concerning a contagious disease, 00:28:13.29\00:28:15.99 that they have to be washed, 00:28:16.02\00:28:17.43 that they have to be separated from the people, 00:28:17.46\00:28:19.93 the things that they were sitting on 00:28:19.96\00:28:21.30 had to be cleaned, washed, san... 00:28:21.33\00:28:24.13 We use today the word sanitized, you know? 00:28:24.17\00:28:26.84 And these people, 00:28:26.87\00:28:28.20 when they had a contagious disease 00:28:28.24\00:28:29.57 were told to separate from the family, 00:28:29.60\00:28:31.01 separate from their home, 00:28:31.04\00:28:32.37 otherwise everyone in the home will be sick. 00:28:32.41\00:28:34.71 And before you know it, 00:28:34.74\00:28:36.08 the whole camp of Israel will have a contagious disease. 00:28:36.11\00:28:38.41 One of those diseases that was incurable, 00:28:38.45\00:28:40.88 they said was leprosy. 00:28:40.92\00:28:43.05 And so as you read about leprosy, 00:28:43.08\00:28:45.42 we'll see that it was highly contagious 00:28:45.45\00:28:47.42 and God placed before the people instruction 00:28:47.46\00:28:50.93 to protect them from this deadly disease. 00:28:50.96\00:28:54.06 Let's go to Leviticus 00:28:54.10\00:28:56.46 25:2-4. 00:28:56.50\00:29:00.17 And this is beautiful, what God told the people to do. 00:29:00.20\00:29:04.34 Notice, 00:29:04.37\00:29:05.71 "Speak unto the children of Israel 00:29:05.74\00:29:07.18 and say unto them: 00:29:07.21\00:29:08.54 'When you come into the land which I give you, 00:29:08.58\00:29:11.18 then shall the land keep a Sabbath unto the Lord, 00:29:11.21\00:29:14.35 Six years thou shall sow thy field, 00:29:14.38\00:29:16.89 six years thou shall prune thy vineyard 00:29:16.92\00:29:19.42 and gather in the fruit thereof. 00:29:19.45\00:29:21.56 But in the seventh year 00:29:21.59\00:29:23.63 shall be a Sabbath of rest unto the land, 00:29:23.66\00:29:26.66 a Sabbath for the Lord. 00:29:26.70\00:29:28.46 Thou shall neither sow thy field 00:29:28.50\00:29:30.27 nor prune thy vineyard." 00:29:30.30\00:29:32.43 So we see here that God wanted even the land to rest. 00:29:32.47\00:29:35.70 Why? 00:29:35.74\00:29:37.07 The continued planting and growing and sowing, 00:29:37.11\00:29:42.71 all of these things 00:29:42.74\00:29:44.08 eventually would deplete the soil of its nutrients. 00:29:44.11\00:29:47.08 So God said, "Let's give the land a rest." 00:29:47.12\00:29:50.19 One year of rest, 00:29:50.22\00:29:51.55 and then the soil could recover from the use. 00:29:51.59\00:29:56.02 Let's go to Deuteronomy 4:5-8 00:29:56.06\00:29:59.29 because there is a lesson for us 00:29:59.33\00:30:01.90 here that is of vital importance. 00:30:01.93\00:30:04.37 Surely this is Moses speaking. 00:30:04.40\00:30:06.37 "Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments, 00:30:06.40\00:30:09.17 just as the Lord my God commanded me, 00:30:09.20\00:30:11.81 that you should act according to them 00:30:11.84\00:30:13.81 in the land which you go to possess. 00:30:13.84\00:30:15.94 Therefore be careful to observe them, 00:30:15.98\00:30:18.35 for this is your wisdom 00:30:18.38\00:30:19.91 and your understanding in the sight of the peoples 00:30:19.95\00:30:23.49 who will hear all these statutes, and say, 00:30:23.52\00:30:26.29 'Surely this great nation 00:30:26.32\00:30:29.09 is a wise and understanding people.' 00:30:29.12\00:30:32.59 For what great nation is there 00:30:32.63\00:30:35.06 that has God so near to it, 00:30:35.10\00:30:38.60 as the Lord our God is to us, 00:30:38.63\00:30:40.64 for whatever reason we may call upon Him? 00:30:40.67\00:30:43.64 And what great nation is there that has such statutes 00:30:43.67\00:30:47.24 and righteous judgments as are in all this law 00:30:47.28\00:30:50.85 which I set before you this day?'" 00:30:50.88\00:30:53.82 The laws that God gave to the people of Israel 00:30:53.85\00:30:57.05 were for their blessing and their protection. 00:30:57.09\00:30:59.89 You have heard of also the law of ordinances. 00:30:59.92\00:31:04.63 And we're going to talk briefly about that because, 00:31:04.66\00:31:07.50 and we're going to cover this 00:31:07.53\00:31:08.86 as we continue in this study of the, 00:31:08.90\00:31:11.37 this quarterly. 00:31:11.40\00:31:13.40 Notice what is written again 00:31:13.44\00:31:14.90 in the book Christ Object Lessons 00:31:14.94\00:31:16.84 concerning the commandments and the statutes. 00:31:16.87\00:31:19.67 Page 289, 00:31:19.71\00:31:21.21 "If they would keep His commandments, 00:31:21.24\00:31:23.18 God promised to give them the finest of wheat, 00:31:23.21\00:31:26.72 and bring them honey out of the rock. 00:31:26.75\00:31:28.68 With long life would He satisfy them, 00:31:28.72\00:31:31.65 and show them His salvation. 00:31:31.69\00:31:34.06 Through disobedience to God, Adam and Eve had lost Eden, 00:31:34.09\00:31:36.73 and because of sin the whole earth was cursed. 00:31:36.76\00:31:39.66 But if God's people followed His instruction, 00:31:39.69\00:31:42.20 their land would be restored to fertility and beauty. 00:31:42.23\00:31:46.10 God Himself gave them directions 00:31:46.13\00:31:48.34 in regard to the culture of the soil, 00:31:48.37\00:31:50.64 and they were to co-operate with Him 00:31:50.67\00:31:52.67 in its restoration. 00:31:52.71\00:31:54.08 Thus the whole land, under God's control, 00:31:54.11\00:31:56.64 would become an object lesson of spiritual growth, 00:31:56.68\00:31:59.45 spiritual truth. 00:31:59.48\00:32:00.82 As in obedience to His natural laws 00:32:00.85\00:32:03.32 the earth should produce its treasures, 00:32:03.35\00:32:05.59 so in obedience to His moral law 00:32:05.62\00:32:08.82 the hearts of the people 00:32:08.86\00:32:10.23 were to reflect the attributes of His character. 00:32:10.26\00:32:13.03 Even the heathen would recognize 00:32:13.06\00:32:14.90 the superiority of those 00:32:14.93\00:32:16.67 who served and worshiped the living God." 00:32:16.70\00:32:19.53 So, praise the Lord. 00:32:19.57\00:32:20.90 The laws were supposed to protect the people 00:32:20.94\00:32:23.14 and bless the people. 00:32:23.17\00:32:24.81 And because of time, I have to move over quickly 00:32:24.84\00:32:27.34 to talking about a separation between the laws of ordinances, 00:32:27.38\00:32:31.25 the laws of sacrifices, 00:32:31.28\00:32:33.42 these laws pointed to Jesus, our sacrifice. 00:32:33.45\00:32:37.39 They were of temporary benefit 00:32:37.42\00:32:40.06 because when people would sacrifice for their sins, 00:32:40.09\00:32:43.49 they were to consider and understand that 00:32:43.53\00:32:46.93 the Son of God was coming to die for them for their sins. 00:32:46.96\00:32:52.27 So these had temporary benefit 00:32:52.30\00:32:53.97 because they were a shadow of good things to come. 00:32:54.00\00:32:57.71 Now, I'm going to read to you from Colossians 2:14. 00:32:57.74\00:33:03.41 Notice what the Bible says there, 00:33:03.45\00:33:05.55 "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances 00:33:05.58\00:33:09.05 that was against us, which was contrary to us, 00:33:09.08\00:33:13.46 and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross." 00:33:13.49\00:33:16.62 Now, some people think 00:33:16.66\00:33:17.99 this is referring to the Ten Commandments. 00:33:18.03\00:33:20.66 No, it is not referring to the Ten Commandments 00:33:20.70\00:33:22.56 because the Ten Commandments 00:33:22.60\00:33:24.13 are not a shadow of good things to come, 00:33:24.17\00:33:26.57 but they are God, 00:33:26.60\00:33:28.37 a transcript of God's character. 00:33:28.40\00:33:30.64 Now, one of the pioneers, one of the ancient authors 00:33:30.67\00:33:35.74 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:33:35.78\00:33:37.21 wrote something very interesting 00:33:37.25\00:33:38.88 concerning this particular text and is very interesting. 00:33:38.91\00:33:43.45 And I would like for you to hear, 00:33:43.49\00:33:44.82 it's from the History of the Sabbath, 00:33:44.85\00:33:46.79 page 138. 00:33:46.82\00:33:48.59 He says, 00:33:48.62\00:33:49.96 "The whole is declared 00:33:49.99\00:33:51.33 a shadow of good things to come, 00:33:51.36\00:33:53.13 and the body which cast this shadow is of Christ. 00:33:53.16\00:33:57.27 That law which was proclaimed by the voice of God 00:33:57.30\00:34:00.04 and was written by his own finger, 00:34:00.07\00:34:02.17 upon the tables of stone, 00:34:02.20\00:34:03.81 and deposited beneath the mercy seat 00:34:03.84\00:34:06.51 was all together 00:34:06.54\00:34:07.88 unlike the system of carnal ordinances 00:34:07.91\00:34:11.58 that was written by Moses in a book, 00:34:11.61\00:34:14.02 it was completely different, 00:34:14.05\00:34:15.68 and placed in the side of the ark." 00:34:15.72\00:34:18.65 Now notice what he says, 00:34:18.69\00:34:20.52 "It would be absurd 00:34:20.56\00:34:21.89 to speak of the tables of stone as nailed to the cross. 00:34:21.92\00:34:25.69 "You can't do it. They're made of stone. 00:34:25.73\00:34:27.80 And he says, 00:34:27.83\00:34:29.16 "Or to speak of blotting out what was engraved in stone." 00:34:29.20\00:34:33.67 Quite different from writing on papyrus, 00:34:33.70\00:34:37.24 or how do you say it? 00:34:37.27\00:34:38.61 Papyrus, quite different that you can blot it out. 00:34:38.64\00:34:41.21 You can burn it and you can blot it out. 00:34:41.24\00:34:44.81 So God's law was written on stone, 00:34:44.85\00:34:48.58 His Ten Commandments. 00:34:48.62\00:34:50.59 And so, I would like to point out to you 00:34:50.62\00:34:55.12 Deuteronomy 5:29, 00:34:55.16\00:34:57.49 notice this marvelous verse, 00:34:57.53\00:35:00.36 "All that they have such a heart in them 00:35:00.40\00:35:03.30 that they would fear me 00:35:03.33\00:35:05.50 and always keep all my commandments, 00:35:05.53\00:35:08.54 that it might be well with them 00:35:08.57\00:35:10.51 and with their children forever." 00:35:10.54\00:35:13.61 God's Ten Commandments continue today 00:35:13.64\00:35:16.64 to be a guide to guide us to Jesus, 00:35:16.68\00:35:20.12 but also to help us understand that God's law is eternal. 00:35:20.15\00:35:23.65 It cannot be changed. 00:35:23.69\00:35:25.02 They are transcripts of God's character. 00:35:25.05\00:35:27.62 Praise The Lord. 00:35:27.66\00:35:28.99 Thank you so much, Pastor Dinzey. Amen. 00:35:29.02\00:35:30.76 That sets me up great for Wednesday's lesson 00:35:30.79\00:35:32.73 entitled The Stability of God's Law. 00:35:32.76\00:35:36.26 And you know, 00:35:36.30\00:35:37.63 this is something that I think a lot of people struggle with 00:35:37.67\00:35:40.47 in the sense of, especially 00:35:40.50\00:35:42.54 the kind of the evangelical Christian society 00:35:42.57\00:35:44.54 that we live in today, 00:35:44.57\00:35:45.91 where there's so much, there's so much doubt, 00:35:45.94\00:35:49.08 you know, against the law of God 00:35:49.11\00:35:50.85 in the sense of how and what role it all it plays 00:35:50.88\00:35:53.78 within our Christian walk with the Lord. 00:35:53.82\00:35:56.28 And so the lesson actually starts off with a question 00:35:56.32\00:35:58.45 that I'm going to ask here, 00:35:58.49\00:35:59.82 and then we're going to answer that question 00:35:59.85\00:36:01.42 and build on it throughout this lesson. 00:36:01.46\00:36:03.76 So he asked, what truth about God 00:36:03.79\00:36:05.66 does the presence of God's law 00:36:05.69\00:36:07.63 in the covenant relationship 00:36:07.66\00:36:09.50 teach us about His essential nature? 00:36:09.53\00:36:13.50 And I love the answer it gives 00:36:13.54\00:36:14.94 because it's one of my favorite texts, 00:36:14.97\00:36:16.57 Malachi 3:6, 00:36:16.60\00:36:19.31 "I am the Lord." 00:36:19.34\00:36:20.68 He says, "For I am the Lord. I do not change." 00:36:20.71\00:36:23.58 King James says, "I change not," right? 00:36:23.61\00:36:26.58 God does not change in the sense that 00:36:26.61\00:36:29.32 you know, we can make on the fact that 00:36:29.35\00:36:30.75 God does not change in nature or in character. 00:36:30.79\00:36:32.89 He's the same God yesterday, today, and forever. 00:36:32.92\00:36:36.32 His standards are always the same 00:36:36.36\00:36:38.63 and the same divine loving God you have here 00:36:38.66\00:36:41.30 is the same wonderful, graceful God over here, right? 00:36:41.33\00:36:44.07 So you're seeing the same God in the... 00:36:44.10\00:36:45.47 That's why you hear a lot of Christians say, 00:36:45.50\00:36:47.00 you know, the God of the Old Testament 00:36:47.04\00:36:48.70 and you know, the Savior in the New Testament's 00:36:48.74\00:36:50.97 two different people that I see. 00:36:51.01\00:36:52.97 No, no, no. 00:36:53.01\00:36:54.34 If you, if you're reading the story of scripture properly 00:36:54.38\00:36:56.44 and you are allowing the Word of God 00:36:56.48\00:36:57.81 to speak to you, then, you know, 00:36:57.85\00:36:59.18 it's the same gracious, loving God all throughout. 00:36:59.21\00:37:02.05 It's the people that change, not the Lord. 00:37:02.08\00:37:05.35 And, of course, the people's changing. 00:37:05.39\00:37:07.42 Of course, their lack of obedience 00:37:07.46\00:37:08.99 calls the Lord to, 00:37:09.02\00:37:10.63 you know, go about changing some of His methods 00:37:10.66\00:37:12.69 and some of His approach, 00:37:12.73\00:37:14.06 but never His character, never His law. 00:37:14.10\00:37:16.53 And that's what this lesson is talking about. 00:37:16.56\00:37:18.27 The stability of God's law 00:37:18.30\00:37:20.04 that we see throughout Scripture. 00:37:20.07\00:37:21.40 Another great text that it presents here 00:37:21.44\00:37:23.41 in the lesson that I really enjoyed 00:37:23.44\00:37:25.17 was James 1:17. 00:37:25.21\00:37:28.21 Again, James 1:17 says, 00:37:28.24\00:37:30.38 "Every good gift and every perfect 00:37:30.41\00:37:33.72 gift is from above, 00:37:33.75\00:37:35.08 and comes down from the father of lights, 00:37:35.12\00:37:37.29 with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning." 00:37:37.32\00:37:41.62 Again, it's implying 00:37:41.66\00:37:43.96 and very much solidifying the fact 00:37:43.99\00:37:45.93 that God does not change. 00:37:45.96\00:37:47.30 It's the same God throughout. 00:37:47.33\00:37:49.06 And the same thing can be said about His eternal law. 00:37:49.10\00:37:52.83 God's law is a part of the everlasting covenant 00:37:52.87\00:37:54.90 is a true gift indeed. 00:37:54.94\00:37:58.07 And so we have this to say that the, 00:37:58.11\00:38:00.44 this is the same eternal omniscient, omnipotent, 00:38:00.48\00:38:03.58 omnibenevolent God 00:38:03.61\00:38:04.95 revealing Himself 00:38:04.98\00:38:06.31 and His character to us constantly. 00:38:06.35\00:38:08.62 He is sharing with us the law, 00:38:08.65\00:38:11.35 which of course is His eternal kingdom 00:38:11.39\00:38:13.82 is governed by. 00:38:13.86\00:38:15.19 So right now, you know, 00:38:15.22\00:38:16.56 if we could particularly take a trip into heaven right now, 00:38:16.59\00:38:20.00 you would see that God's kingdom, 00:38:20.03\00:38:22.43 heaven is governed by the law of God. 00:38:22.46\00:38:25.60 And it's interesting because when you jump into, 00:38:25.63\00:38:27.90 we've mentioned here the Beatitudes, 00:38:27.94\00:38:29.74 the Sermon on the Mount. 00:38:29.77\00:38:31.11 Matthew 7:21-23, 00:38:31.14\00:38:33.44 actually reveals a little something here to us, 00:38:33.48\00:38:36.04 kind of gives us an idea 00:38:36.08\00:38:37.61 into the significance, the importance 00:38:37.65\00:38:39.91 and the stability of God's law within one's life. 00:38:39.95\00:38:43.02 Matthew 7:21-23. 00:38:43.05\00:38:46.29 We've read this many times in lessons past. 00:38:46.32\00:38:48.79 This is something that people often, 00:38:48.82\00:38:50.89 they don't forget this passage, at least I don't. 00:38:50.93\00:38:52.56 This was a very big passage in my growing, in my, 00:38:52.59\00:38:55.70 you know, my maturity in the Lord. 00:38:55.73\00:38:57.93 Matthew 7:21-23. 00:38:57.97\00:38:59.63 This is a part of the Sermon on the Mount. 00:38:59.67\00:39:01.04 And Jesus says, 00:39:01.07\00:39:02.40 "Not everyone who says to Me, 00:39:02.44\00:39:03.77 Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, 00:39:03.81\00:39:05.61 but he who does," what? 00:39:05.64\00:39:07.71 "The will of My Father in heaven." 00:39:07.74\00:39:10.18 And then He goes on to say, 00:39:10.21\00:39:11.55 "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, 00:39:11.58\00:39:12.91 have we not prophesied in Your name, 00:39:12.95\00:39:14.58 cast out demons in Your name, 00:39:14.62\00:39:16.25 done many wonderful works or wonders in Your name." 00:39:16.28\00:39:19.75 And then He says this in verse 23, 00:39:19.79\00:39:21.56 "And then I will declare to them, 00:39:21.59\00:39:22.92 'I never knew you, 00:39:22.96\00:39:24.53 depart from me you who practice lawlessness.''' 00:39:24.56\00:39:28.63 Now, the reason why I read all the way through to the end, 00:39:28.66\00:39:30.90 I'm going to back up there to the very first verse, 00:39:30.93\00:39:33.37 because it says there, not everyone who says to me, 00:39:33.40\00:39:36.00 Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom, 00:39:36.04\00:39:37.37 but he who does the will of My Father, 00:39:37.41\00:39:40.68 which is in heaven. 00:39:40.71\00:39:42.04 What is the will of God? 00:39:42.08\00:39:43.55 Well, the context of this particular verse here 00:39:43.58\00:39:46.01 kind of gives us an idea 00:39:46.05\00:39:47.38 because He's pronouncing upon those 00:39:47.42\00:39:49.38 that He's saying, I don't know you. 00:39:49.42\00:39:50.75 Why? Because those who practice lawlessness. 00:39:50.79\00:39:54.06 So what is the will of God for our life? 00:39:54.09\00:39:56.76 Psalm 40:8 gives us an indication of that. 00:39:56.79\00:39:59.29 When the Psalmist wrote, 00:39:59.33\00:40:00.70 "I delight to do your will, oh my God. 00:40:00.73\00:40:03.67 And your law is within my mouth." 00:40:03.70\00:40:06.57 So it is the will of God 00:40:06.60\00:40:08.80 that we be stable 00:40:08.84\00:40:10.24 and solidified and grounded in the fact 00:40:10.27\00:40:12.37 that His character 00:40:12.41\00:40:13.88 is basically transcribed within that law. 00:40:13.91\00:40:16.91 It is not, again, as we brought up many times, 00:40:16.95\00:40:19.15 you know, these rules and regulations, 00:40:19.18\00:40:20.82 you know, thou shalts and thou shalt nots, 00:40:20.85\00:40:22.85 and don't do this and don't do that. 00:40:22.88\00:40:24.55 But there are 10 promises that we see there 00:40:24.59\00:40:27.76 in which God is saying, I'm bestowing My will upon you. 00:40:27.79\00:40:30.33 If you are keeping My commandments, 00:40:30.36\00:40:32.33 if you're obedient to My law, 00:40:32.36\00:40:33.76 then you are following in My will. 00:40:33.80\00:40:37.03 Walter R. Beach in his book Dimensions in Salvation, 00:40:37.07\00:40:40.64 which was published by the Review and Herald. 00:40:40.67\00:40:43.14 And on page 143 of his book, 00:40:43.17\00:40:45.81 there was, it was published back in 1963. 00:40:45.84\00:40:47.81 This is what he says, powerful quote here. 00:40:47.84\00:40:49.71 He says, "The assurance that God is reliable 00:40:49.74\00:40:52.38 and dependable lies in the truth, 00:40:52.41\00:40:54.28 that He is a God of law. 00:40:54.32\00:40:57.02 His will and His law are one. 00:40:57.05\00:40:59.89 God says that right is right, 00:40:59.92\00:41:02.06 because it describes 00:41:02.09\00:41:03.43 the best possible relationships. 00:41:03.46\00:41:05.69 Therefore God's law is never arbitrary or subject 00:41:05.73\00:41:09.16 to whim and fancy. 00:41:09.20\00:41:11.23 It is the most stable thing in the universe." Why? 00:41:11.27\00:41:15.60 Because God's kingdom 00:41:15.64\00:41:17.17 is governed by God's law, right? 00:41:17.21\00:41:19.54 If you know, want to know who God is, 00:41:19.57\00:41:21.14 look at His law, it tells you exactly who He is. 00:41:21.18\00:41:24.28 And so if God's law cannot save a person, 00:41:24.31\00:41:27.15 which we learned that from previous lessons, 00:41:27.18\00:41:29.12 if God's law does not save a person from sin, 00:41:29.15\00:41:31.32 then why did He make it a part of the covenant? 00:41:31.35\00:41:33.92 Because we've talked about 00:41:33.96\00:41:35.29 how it's the heart of the covenant. 00:41:35.32\00:41:36.79 I love Amos 3:3. I love this. 00:41:36.83\00:41:39.93 It says, "Can two walk together unless they are agreed?" 00:41:39.96\00:41:45.70 So we learned last week in our, 00:41:45.73\00:41:48.57 and I did my little illustration last week 00:41:48.60\00:41:50.94 of how obviously God gave the law 00:41:50.97\00:41:52.74 so that the children of Israel would be able to see their sin, 00:41:52.77\00:41:56.04 not for it to save them. 00:41:56.08\00:41:57.41 They'd be able to see their sin 00:41:57.45\00:41:59.08 and see their need therefore 00:41:59.11\00:42:00.98 of the Savior to be cleansed from their sin. 00:42:01.02\00:42:02.95 And that is true. 00:42:02.98\00:42:04.32 But also God gives His law not as a means of salvation, 00:42:04.35\00:42:07.42 not as a means for us to be saved, 00:42:07.46\00:42:10.03 you know, by that law. 00:42:10.06\00:42:11.76 But it also here 00:42:11.79\00:42:13.19 is establishing the fact within the lesson 00:42:13.23\00:42:15.36 that God establishes or puts 00:42:15.40\00:42:17.03 this beautiful Ten Commandment law 00:42:17.07\00:42:18.87 within the overall covenant plan, 00:42:18.90\00:42:21.54 this covenant relationship plan, 00:42:21.57\00:42:23.27 because He wants us to be in agreement. 00:42:23.30\00:42:25.47 He wants us to be on the same page, right? 00:42:25.51\00:42:28.08 And this was Lucifer's problem. 00:42:28.11\00:42:30.21 This was ultimately what Lucifer's, 00:42:30.25\00:42:31.78 Lucifer had this problem when he was in heaven. 00:42:31.81\00:42:34.12 And we see the record of that when we go back to Ezekiel 28, 00:42:34.15\00:42:37.19 and also we can read there in Isaiah Chapter 14, 00:42:37.22\00:42:39.95 you know, but in Ezekiel 28, 00:42:39.99\00:42:41.32 it says that Lucifer was a covering cherub. 00:42:41.36\00:42:44.26 What was he covering? 00:42:44.29\00:42:45.63 What was he protecting? 00:42:45.66\00:42:47.00 What was he, you know, further establishing 00:42:47.03\00:42:48.80 and upholding in the kingdom of God? 00:42:48.83\00:42:50.37 He was one of those two covering cherubs 00:42:50.40\00:42:52.23 in the very presence of the Lord 00:42:52.27\00:42:53.97 that was upholding, establishing, protecting, 00:42:54.00\00:42:56.00 covering God's holy law. 00:42:56.04\00:42:58.17 But there came a point in which he said, 00:42:58.21\00:42:59.54 I don't agree with that anymore. 00:42:59.57\00:43:00.94 I want my own law. I want to do my own thing. 00:43:00.98\00:43:04.61 And so he basically rebelled against God. 00:43:04.65\00:43:07.38 He looked within himself 00:43:07.42\00:43:08.75 and begin to see his own beauty. 00:43:08.78\00:43:10.39 And he began to rebel against the governmental law of God. 00:43:10.42\00:43:14.29 And it's interesting 00:43:14.32\00:43:15.72 as I was doing a little bit of study, 00:43:15.76\00:43:17.16 I've come up with, come to this name 00:43:17.19\00:43:19.16 or to this name, many times in my studies in past. 00:43:19.19\00:43:21.30 But you know, I'm asking the question at this point, 00:43:21.33\00:43:24.30 does that same mentality 00:43:24.33\00:43:25.83 seem to be manifested within society. 00:43:25.87\00:43:27.80 And sometimes even within the church today 00:43:27.84\00:43:30.61 that I know there's the law of God over here, 00:43:30.64\00:43:32.21 but I just, I feel like 00:43:32.24\00:43:33.58 I'm going to do what I want to do. 00:43:33.61\00:43:34.94 And this was basically the concept of a man 00:43:34.98\00:43:37.25 by the name of Aleister Crowley. 00:43:37.28\00:43:39.18 If you've ever done your research on a man 00:43:39.21\00:43:41.05 by the name of Aleister Crowley. 00:43:41.08\00:43:42.42 He's known as the father of modern Satanism. 00:43:42.45\00:43:44.65 And he goes over to Egypt for his honeymoon 00:43:44.69\00:43:46.55 back in the early 1900s. 00:43:46.59\00:43:48.09 And he comes back saying, 00:43:48.12\00:43:49.46 I've received this incredible revelation 00:43:49.49\00:43:50.93 by some spiritual voice of some kind. 00:43:50.96\00:43:54.33 And he writes what is known as the Book of the Law. 00:43:54.36\00:43:56.87 And the whole thesis of that Book of the Law is 00:43:56.90\00:44:00.40 do what thou wilt is the whole of the law. 00:44:00.44\00:44:04.07 In other words, there's no balance, 00:44:04.11\00:44:05.44 there's no stability. 00:44:05.47\00:44:06.81 Do what you want to do. 00:44:06.84\00:44:08.18 There's nothing that grounds us to moral standards. 00:44:08.21\00:44:10.58 And you know, the difference 00:44:10.61\00:44:12.25 in understanding the differentiation 00:44:12.28\00:44:13.72 between what is right, what is wrong, 00:44:13.75\00:44:15.32 what is evil, what is good, what is bad. 00:44:15.35\00:44:18.12 So Matthew 24:12 also clearly tells us that 00:44:18.15\00:44:23.29 in the last days, 00:44:23.32\00:44:24.66 this would be the same issue 00:44:24.69\00:44:26.16 prior to the second coming of Jesus. 00:44:26.19\00:44:27.96 And it says there Matthew 24:12, 00:44:28.00\00:44:29.80 "And because of lawlessness, 00:44:29.83\00:44:31.77 the lawlessness will abound, it says, 00:44:31.80\00:44:34.07 the love of many will grow cold." 00:44:34.10\00:44:36.91 And we're seeing that indeed in society today. 00:44:36.94\00:44:39.17 But you know, God's law is stable 00:44:39.21\00:44:41.71 and we can have stability within the law of God 00:44:41.74\00:44:43.78 to approach it in its right context, 00:44:43.81\00:44:45.75 not as a means of salvation, 00:44:45.78\00:44:47.22 but to see it as that great mirror 00:44:47.25\00:44:50.02 that shows our need of the Savior, 00:44:50.05\00:44:52.69 that points us to Jesus. 00:44:52.72\00:44:54.06 I love what Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-40. 00:44:54.09\00:44:56.83 It said, 00:44:56.86\00:44:58.19 "Jesus said, unto them, 00:44:58.23\00:44:59.56 'You shall love the Lord, your God with all your heart, 00:44:59.59\00:45:01.66 with all your soul and with all your mind. 00:45:01.70\00:45:03.70 This is the first and great commandment.'" 00:45:03.73\00:45:05.83 But then in verse 39, He says, 00:45:05.87\00:45:07.20 "The second is like, 00:45:07.24\00:45:08.57 and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:45:08.60\00:45:10.77 On these two commandments 00:45:10.81\00:45:12.27 hang all the law and the prophets.' 00:45:12.31\00:45:14.81 And we know that, yes, indeed, 00:45:14.84\00:45:16.61 if you take those first four commandments, 00:45:16.64\00:45:18.15 as Shelley brought out earlier 00:45:18.18\00:45:19.51 and you take those last six commandments 00:45:19.55\00:45:21.62 and you look at those in proper context. 00:45:21.65\00:45:25.15 You'll see the first four points us 00:45:25.19\00:45:27.42 to our love and our service for God. 00:45:27.46\00:45:29.69 And, of course, the last six, 00:45:29.72\00:45:31.06 our love and our service for man. 00:45:31.09\00:45:33.03 God's law is stable. 00:45:33.06\00:45:34.50 And in Christ, we are stable as well. 00:45:34.53\00:45:36.56 Amen. 00:45:36.60\00:45:37.93 Thank you so much each one of you. 00:45:37.97\00:45:39.50 What an incredible lesson Covenant Law. 00:45:39.53\00:45:42.10 The role of law in our lives as Christians, 00:45:42.14\00:45:45.47 not just for the children of Israel, 00:45:45.51\00:45:47.24 but us today. 00:45:47.28\00:45:48.71 My lesson is just one word. 00:45:48.74\00:45:50.35 That's the title, If. 00:45:50.38\00:45:52.51 And so, I want to start with an if then statement. 00:45:52.55\00:45:56.89 Now an if then statement 00:45:56.92\00:45:58.25 is also known as a conditional statement. 00:45:58.29\00:46:01.32 We have a hypothesis followed by a conclusion. 00:46:01.36\00:46:05.53 We would say, if this happens, then that will happen. 00:46:05.56\00:46:09.56 This is not going to happen unless you have this. 00:46:09.60\00:46:12.17 This is the condition. 00:46:12.20\00:46:14.50 You could say if you work overtime, 00:46:14.54\00:46:17.47 you'll be paid time and a half. 00:46:17.51\00:46:18.84 Now not everybody's paid time and a half, are they? 00:46:18.87\00:46:21.31 You have a condition. 00:46:21.34\00:46:22.68 You have to work overtime to be paid time and a half. 00:46:22.71\00:46:27.15 What about this one? 00:46:27.18\00:46:28.52 I'll wash the car if the weather is nice. 00:46:28.55\00:46:31.05 The condition is what? 00:46:31.09\00:46:32.45 The weather needs to be nice. 00:46:32.49\00:46:34.22 If the weather's nice, then I wash the car. 00:46:34.26\00:46:38.59 I'll be a millionaire when I play monopoly. 00:46:38.63\00:46:42.23 The condition is 00:46:42.26\00:46:43.97 when I play monopoly, I will be a millionaire. 00:46:44.00\00:46:47.54 There is a condition there. 00:46:47.57\00:46:50.51 If then statements. 00:46:50.54\00:46:52.07 Let's look at if then statements 00:46:52.11\00:46:53.68 for the covenant. 00:46:53.71\00:46:55.64 Exodus, 19:5, 00:46:55.68\00:46:57.05 we're going to jump through several verses 00:46:57.08\00:46:58.51 very quickly here. 00:46:58.55\00:46:59.88 Exodus 19:5, 00:46:59.91\00:47:01.82 "Now, therefore, if," here's the condition, 00:47:01.85\00:47:04.39 "If you will indeed obey My voice 00:47:04.42\00:47:06.05 and keep My covenant, 00:47:06.09\00:47:07.42 then you shall be a special treasure to me 00:47:07.46\00:47:10.03 above all the people, 00:47:10.06\00:47:11.39 for all the earth is mine." 00:47:11.43\00:47:14.06 If you obey, 00:47:14.10\00:47:15.50 then you will be My covenant people. 00:47:15.53\00:47:18.07 Jump over to Leviticus. 00:47:18.10\00:47:19.43 Leviticus 26:3-9. 00:47:19.47\00:47:22.90 We're not going to read all of those verses, 00:47:22.94\00:47:25.44 but it begins with an if that conditional statement, 00:47:25.47\00:47:29.38 "If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments 00:47:29.41\00:47:32.51 and perform them, then", 00:47:32.55\00:47:34.62 and then it goes an entire list of things 00:47:34.65\00:47:37.09 that God is going to do. 00:47:37.12\00:47:38.45 You jump down to verse 9. 00:47:38.49\00:47:39.82 "I will look on you favorably and make you fruitful, 00:47:39.85\00:47:41.99 multiply you and confirm My covenant with you." 00:47:42.02\00:47:46.70 So the condition is, 00:47:46.73\00:47:48.06 if you walk in My statutes and My commandments, 00:47:48.10\00:47:51.33 then what? 00:47:51.37\00:47:52.70 I will give you rain. 00:47:52.73\00:47:54.07 Your land and trees will be fruitful. 00:47:54.10\00:47:55.44 You will eat bread. 00:47:55.47\00:47:56.81 You will dwell in the land safely. 00:47:56.84\00:47:58.67 You will not be afraid. 00:47:58.71\00:48:00.04 No evil beasts or evil men will be around you. 00:48:00.08\00:48:02.41 You will be victorious in battle. 00:48:02.44\00:48:04.88 You will be fruitful and multiply. 00:48:04.91\00:48:06.78 And I will confirm My covenant with you. 00:48:06.82\00:48:10.92 God did the same thing with Abraham. 00:48:10.95\00:48:12.75 Genesis 26:4-5. 00:48:12.79\00:48:16.42 I will make your descendants. Now this one's backwards. 00:48:16.46\00:48:19.09 This one starts with what's going to happen, 00:48:19.13\00:48:21.73 then it goes to the condition. 00:48:21.76\00:48:23.77 "I will make you descendants multiply 00:48:23.80\00:48:25.53 as the stars of heaven. 00:48:25.57\00:48:27.07 I will give to your descendants all these lands 00:48:27.10\00:48:29.20 and in your seed, all the nations of the earth 00:48:29.24\00:48:31.27 shall be blessed." 00:48:31.31\00:48:32.64 Now here's the if, 00:48:32.67\00:48:34.01 "Because Abraham obeyed My voice, 00:48:34.04\00:48:37.31 kept My charge, My commandments, 00:48:37.35\00:48:38.88 My statutes, and My laws. 00:48:38.91\00:48:40.65 You see if Abraham obeyed God's law. 00:48:40.68\00:48:43.35 If he kept His statutes, if he kept His covenant, 00:48:43.39\00:48:46.65 then God promised to multiply his descendants. 00:48:46.69\00:48:50.06 He promised to give him land. 00:48:50.09\00:48:52.03 He promised to bless the entire earth 00:48:52.06\00:48:54.70 through his seed. 00:48:54.73\00:48:56.33 And, of course, specifically the one seed the Messiah. 00:48:56.36\00:49:00.54 One more if then covenant statement. 00:49:00.57\00:49:02.87 Deuteronomy 28, 00:49:02.90\00:49:04.34 we call this the law of blessings 00:49:04.37\00:49:06.47 and cursings. 00:49:06.51\00:49:08.01 Deuteronomy 28. 00:49:08.04\00:49:09.38 We're not going to read all those verses, 00:49:09.41\00:49:10.75 but it starts in verse 1. 00:49:10.78\00:49:13.31 "Now, it shall come to pass, 00:49:13.35\00:49:14.85 if you diligently obey 00:49:14.88\00:49:16.85 the voice of the Lord, your God, 00:49:16.89\00:49:18.42 to observe carefully all His commandments, 00:49:18.45\00:49:20.66 which I command you today. 00:49:20.69\00:49:22.72 And that the Lord, your God 00:49:22.76\00:49:24.09 will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 00:49:24.13\00:49:26.59 And all these blessings 00:49:26.63\00:49:28.16 will come upon you and overtake you because," 00:49:28.20\00:49:30.97 there's another if, 00:49:31.00\00:49:32.33 "you obey the voice of the Lord, your God." 00:49:32.37\00:49:35.00 And then all of these blessings, 00:49:35.04\00:49:36.91 it takes you all the way down to verse 14. 00:49:36.94\00:49:39.87 So if you obey the voice of the Lord, your God 00:49:39.91\00:49:42.84 and obey His commandments, 00:49:42.88\00:49:44.91 what's God going to do? 00:49:44.95\00:49:46.38 He will set you on high, 00:49:46.41\00:49:48.28 above all the nations of the earth. 00:49:48.32\00:49:50.65 He will bless you in the city and bless you in the country 00:49:50.69\00:49:53.19 and bless the fruit of your body 00:49:53.22\00:49:54.56 and your produce and herds. 00:49:54.59\00:49:56.49 He will bless your basket and your kneading bowl, 00:49:56.52\00:49:58.73 bless you when you come in and when you go out. 00:49:58.76\00:50:01.30 The Lord will defeat your enemies. 00:50:01.33\00:50:03.06 The Lord will bless your finances. 00:50:03.10\00:50:05.37 The Lord will establish you as His special people. 00:50:05.40\00:50:08.07 The Lord will give you rain. 00:50:08.10\00:50:09.57 The Lord will make you the lender, 00:50:09.60\00:50:11.61 not the borrower. 00:50:11.64\00:50:14.01 The Lord will make you the head and not the tail. 00:50:14.04\00:50:16.64 If you read that passage, 00:50:16.68\00:50:18.01 all of those are in that passage 00:50:18.05\00:50:20.25 in Deuteronomy Chapter 28. 00:50:20.28\00:50:24.69 The condition, the if portion, 00:50:24.72\00:50:27.49 the obedience portion is still an act of grace. 00:50:27.52\00:50:33.50 The covenant is not forced. 00:50:33.53\00:50:34.93 It's freely entered into by the people. 00:50:34.96\00:50:38.13 The obligations follow, 00:50:38.17\00:50:39.50 not as a means of earning that covenant blessing, 00:50:39.53\00:50:42.57 but as an outward manifestation 00:50:42.60\00:50:45.11 of walking in covenant with God. 00:50:45.14\00:50:48.14 The condition, which is obedience 00:50:48.18\00:50:50.38 is by grace through faith. 00:50:50.41\00:50:52.01 I want to talk for just a moment 00:50:52.05\00:50:53.38 on the two garments I always call them 00:50:53.42\00:50:55.88 that we have the privilege and opportunity to put on, 00:50:55.92\00:50:59.35 the imputed righteousness of Christ 00:50:59.39\00:51:01.32 and the imparted righteousness of Christ. 00:51:01.36\00:51:04.36 The first one, the imputed is justification. 00:51:04.39\00:51:07.60 That is by grace we are saved through faith. 00:51:07.63\00:51:12.20 Abraham, this is Genesis 15:6. 00:51:12.23\00:51:14.64 He believed God, and it was accounted, reckoned, 00:51:14.67\00:51:18.54 imputed to him for righteousness. 00:51:18.57\00:51:21.84 Now he had not engaged in works 00:51:21.88\00:51:23.65 because circumcision did not even enter 00:51:23.68\00:51:26.55 until a couple chapters later. 00:51:26.58\00:51:28.88 That was not even part of that. 00:51:28.92\00:51:30.92 We'd see that Abraham believed God. 00:51:30.95\00:51:33.36 It was by faith, 00:51:33.39\00:51:35.22 righteousness by faith justification. 00:51:35.26\00:51:38.19 When he believed God, instantly he was covered. 00:51:38.23\00:51:41.66 He was clothed with Christ's perfect garment 00:51:41.70\00:51:45.23 of righteousness. 00:51:45.27\00:51:47.44 At that moment of justification, 00:51:47.47\00:51:49.07 you and I stand before the Father 00:51:49.10\00:51:51.54 as if we have never sinned. 00:51:51.57\00:51:54.88 2 Corinthians 5:21. 00:51:54.91\00:51:57.78 I love this. 00:51:57.81\00:51:59.15 "He made him, God made Jesus, 00:51:59.18\00:52:01.88 who knew no sin to be sin for us, 00:52:01.92\00:52:05.85 that we might become 00:52:05.89\00:52:07.99 the righteousness of God in Him." 00:52:08.02\00:52:11.69 I always call that the double imputation, 00:52:11.73\00:52:13.83 meaning my sin is imputed to Christ. 00:52:13.86\00:52:16.73 He had no sin, but He took my sin, 00:52:16.77\00:52:19.73 and His righteousness is imputed 00:52:19.77\00:52:23.44 or reckoned to my account. 00:52:23.47\00:52:26.68 Then we see the imparted righteousness of Christ. 00:52:26.71\00:52:28.88 Now this is sanctification. 00:52:28.91\00:52:31.85 The first justification is our title for heaven. 00:52:31.88\00:52:34.52 Sanctification is our fitness for heaven. 00:52:34.55\00:52:38.62 This imparted righteousness of Christ. 00:52:38.65\00:52:40.29 If you look at Revelation 19:8, talking of the church, it says, 00:52:40.32\00:52:44.09 "To her, it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, 00:52:44.13\00:52:47.40 clean and bright for the fine linen," 00:52:47.43\00:52:50.87 excuse me, 00:52:50.90\00:52:52.23 "is the righteous acts of the saints." 00:52:52.27\00:52:54.24 Now, when you first read that you think, oh, wow. 00:52:54.27\00:52:57.57 Okay, I was saved by grace, 00:52:57.61\00:52:59.24 this was the imputed righteousness of Christ. 00:52:59.27\00:53:01.38 He covered me and now all of a sudden, 00:53:01.41\00:53:03.35 I'm in my second garment, 00:53:03.38\00:53:05.01 the imparted righteousness of Christ 00:53:05.05\00:53:07.08 is my righteous acts. 00:53:07.12\00:53:09.52 No, it's Christ working in me, 00:53:09.55\00:53:12.59 both to will and to do of His good pleasure. 00:53:12.62\00:53:17.36 It's Colossians 1:27, 00:53:17.39\00:53:19.39 "To whom God would make known 00:53:19.43\00:53:20.76 what is the riches of the glory 00:53:20.80\00:53:22.13 of this mystery among the Gentiles, 00:53:22.16\00:53:24.07 Christ in you, the hope of glory." 00:53:24.10\00:53:26.94 It's Romans 6. 00:53:26.97\00:53:29.30 Romans 6:16 talks about how we surrender. 00:53:29.34\00:53:33.14 Whoever we choose to obey as a master, 00:53:33.17\00:53:36.34 that slave, you could say 00:53:36.38\00:53:38.61 we are whether of obedience 00:53:38.65\00:53:40.82 leading to righteousness or disobedience. 00:53:40.85\00:53:43.28 So every morning when you wake up, 00:53:43.32\00:53:45.35 we have a choice. 00:53:45.39\00:53:46.72 Am I going to make a choice and serve Jesus? 00:53:46.76\00:53:49.96 And if I do, He comes in 00:53:49.99\00:53:52.63 and the power of the indwelling spirit 00:53:52.66\00:53:55.83 does the works 00:53:55.86\00:53:57.20 as I am connected with Him. 00:53:57.23\00:53:59.93 It's a moment by moment, not just in the morning, 00:53:59.97\00:54:02.14 day by day surrender to Him 00:54:02.17\00:54:06.27 that does that work of righteousness 00:54:06.31\00:54:09.34 and transformation in my heart and in my life. 00:54:09.38\00:54:14.18 Now I want to touch on my closing moments 00:54:14.22\00:54:16.48 on one thought, 00:54:16.52\00:54:18.75 the if then statement, 00:54:18.79\00:54:20.12 you might say, okay, I'm walking in righteousness. 00:54:20.16\00:54:22.66 I'm walking in every, all the light I know. 00:54:22.69\00:54:25.43 I'm choosing Jesus, 00:54:25.46\00:54:27.30 but I haven't experienced all those covenant blessings 00:54:27.33\00:54:29.90 that were read about in Deuteronomy 28. 00:54:29.93\00:54:32.77 If the promises are not fulfilled, 00:54:32.80\00:54:35.57 it is all, is it is not always a result of failure 00:54:35.60\00:54:41.08 on the part of the obedient one. 00:54:41.11\00:54:43.81 Sometimes it's because we live in a world of sin. 00:54:43.85\00:54:46.98 John 10:10, "The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy." 00:54:47.02\00:54:50.12 Jesus said that 00:54:50.15\00:54:51.49 "He came that we would have life 00:54:51.52\00:54:53.42 and have it more abundantly." 00:54:53.46\00:54:56.52 Sometimes as the world of sin that we live in 00:54:56.56\00:54:58.76 sometimes is that God can be glorified. 00:54:58.79\00:55:01.20 I think of John 9 and the man who was born blind 00:55:01.23\00:55:03.87 and the disciples said who sinned, 00:55:03.90\00:55:05.23 this man or his parents. 00:55:05.27\00:55:06.60 Jesus said neither. 00:55:06.63\00:55:07.97 It's that God could be glorified, 00:55:08.00\00:55:10.71 sometimes it's so that 00:55:10.74\00:55:12.11 God's grace can be revealed in greater ways. 00:55:12.14\00:55:16.28 2 Corinthians 12:9. 00:55:16.31\00:55:17.91 "He said to me, my grace is sufficient for you. 00:55:17.95\00:55:21.55 My strength is made perfect in your weakness." 00:55:21.58\00:55:25.89 Sometimes it's so that we can bring greater fruit 00:55:25.92\00:55:29.82 to the glory of God. 00:55:29.86\00:55:31.33 John 15, 00:55:31.36\00:55:32.69 "Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes 00:55:32.73\00:55:35.63 that it may bring forth more fruit." 00:55:35.66\00:55:38.47 Amen. 00:55:38.50\00:55:39.83 Thank you so much, Jill and Ryan, 00:55:39.87\00:55:41.74 Pastor Dinzey and Shelley. 00:55:41.77\00:55:43.10 And I'll give each of you a chance 00:55:43.14\00:55:44.47 to summarize your day. 00:55:44.51\00:55:46.51 Well, the title of this message was 00:55:46.54\00:55:49.11 Ties that Bind from Monday's lesson. 00:55:49.14\00:55:51.08 And I'm just sitting here thinking 00:55:51.11\00:55:53.05 the real tie that binds us God's love 00:55:53.08\00:55:56.89 is the compelling force behind His grace. 00:55:56.92\00:56:01.62 We are saved by grace, 00:56:01.66\00:56:03.66 but He, the instructions of love and liberty, 00:56:03.69\00:56:09.06 the law of liberty are the Ten Commandments. 00:56:09.10\00:56:12.03 And when people live by those commandments, 00:56:12.07\00:56:15.74 that is the tie that binds in the Old Covenant, 00:56:15.77\00:56:18.67 it's the tie that binds in the new. 00:56:18.71\00:56:21.01 Amen and amen. 00:56:21.04\00:56:22.38 You know, if the Ten Commandments 00:56:22.41\00:56:24.21 were nailed to the cross, 00:56:24.25\00:56:25.58 then it will contradict Hebrews 10:16, 00:56:25.61\00:56:27.98 "This is the covenant that I will make with them 00:56:28.02\00:56:30.09 after those days, saith the Lord, 00:56:30.12\00:56:31.49 I will put my laws into their hearts, 00:56:31.52\00:56:33.92 and in their minds will I write them." 00:56:33.96\00:56:35.89 Amen. 00:56:35.92\00:56:37.26 There's just a little note here 00:56:37.29\00:56:38.63 on Wednesday's lesson. 00:56:38.66\00:56:40.00 It says, 00:56:40.03\00:56:41.36 "God's law was and is the purpose 00:56:41.40\00:56:43.16 of the covenant relationship to bring the believer 00:56:43.20\00:56:46.03 through God's transforming grace into harmony 00:56:46.07\00:56:48.77 with His will and character." 00:56:48.80\00:56:51.27 If then statements 00:56:51.31\00:56:52.67 we're called to walk in obedience, 00:56:52.71\00:56:55.04 and that obedience is obtained through the power and grace 00:56:55.08\00:56:58.55 of the Lord Jesus. 00:56:58.58\00:56:59.91 Wow. 00:56:59.95\00:57:01.28 We've talked about God's covenant 00:57:01.32\00:57:03.02 and we are continuing on the everlasting covenant, 00:57:03.05\00:57:06.86 the promises of God. 00:57:06.89\00:57:08.72 And we thank you for tuning in, 00:57:08.76\00:57:10.09 but as we close 00:57:10.13\00:57:11.46 talking about the election of grace 00:57:11.49\00:57:12.83 and the election of Israel, 00:57:12.86\00:57:14.23 we are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, 00:57:14.26\00:57:17.40 God's own special people 00:57:17.43\00:57:19.33 that we should show forth the praises of Him 00:57:19.37\00:57:21.57 who called us out of darkness into this marvelous light. 00:57:21.60\00:57:24.67 Join us next time for Covenant Sign. 00:57:24.71\00:57:27.58 God bless you until then. 00:57:27.61\00:57:29.01
