to be invited 00:02:20.84\00:02:22.84 into the throne room 00:02:22.87\00:02:24.51 where the source of power really is. 00:02:24.54\00:02:28.34 And we pray today, Father, 00:02:28.38\00:02:29.71 that we will be as those golden vessels 00:02:29.74\00:02:32.55 that the oil of Your Holy Spirit 00:02:32.58\00:02:34.92 will pour into our hearts today. 00:02:34.95\00:02:37.39 And that through us, 00:02:37.42\00:02:38.82 the words of salvation will find fertile soil 00:02:38.85\00:02:42.52 in the minds and lives of those 00:02:42.56\00:02:43.89 looking for the strength to live to the glory of 00:02:58.61\00:03:01.54 that we are praying 00:03:01.58\00:03:03.08 that you will remember 00:03:03.11\00:03:04.45 because we hope it will transform your life. 00:03:04.48\00:03:07.35 This is our prayer. 00:03:07.38\00:03:08.98 The Saturday portion begins with a very interesting story 00:03:09.02\00:03:12.05 that I like to share with you briefly. 00:03:12.09\00:03:13.89 This story is about a family that had seven children, 00:03:13.92\00:03:17.66 and one of the little boys was sick. 00:03:17.69\00:03:21.13 And, of course, he had to be taken to the hospital. 00:03:21.16\00:03:24.10 Now, let me give you a background 00:03:24.13\00:03:25.53 as to the situation at home. 00:03:25.57\00:03:28.47 They were a poor family. 00:03:28.50\00:03:29.84 And because of the limitations in the home, 00:03:29.87\00:03:33.38 really, when there was a full glass of milk, 00:03:33.41\00:03:36.91 you can only drink part of it. 00:03:36.95\00:03:38.28 And if you were first, 00:03:38.31\00:03:39.65 you have to be careful not to drink too far, 00:03:39.68\00:03:41.55 so that the next person can have some milk. 00:03:41.58\00:03:44.59 So this little boy in the hospital 00:03:44.62\00:03:46.59 after he was made comfortable, 00:03:46.62\00:03:47.99 the nurse brought him a full glass of milk. 00:03:48.02\00:03:50.86 He looked at it, wondering if he could drink it all 00:03:50.89\00:03:54.06 because none of his brothers were there. 00:03:54.10\00:03:56.97 And he said, "How deep should I drink?" 00:03:57.00\00:03:59.30 He didn't know 00:03:59.33\00:04:00.67 if the other part was going to be taken 00:04:00.70\00:04:02.04 to another room in the hospital. 00:04:02.07\00:04:03.41 And she had a knot in her throat 00:04:03.44\00:04:05.31 realize that this little boy 00:04:05.34\00:04:07.21 had never drank a full glass of milk and said, 00:04:07.24\00:04:09.38 "Little child, you can drink it all." 00:04:09.41\00:04:12.95 His eyes opened up wide. 00:04:12.98\00:04:14.48 And he realized that 00:04:14.52\00:04:15.85 he now had an opportunity he never had before. 00:04:15.88\00:04:18.62 And this illustrates 00:04:18.65\00:04:20.39 how God cares for His people as well, 00:04:20.42\00:04:23.12 because He provides for His children. 00:04:23.16\00:04:25.56 And I want to encourage you 00:04:25.59\00:04:27.10 to listen to the scriptures we will be sharing 00:04:27.13\00:04:30.13 because it gives us a picture of God's great love for us. 00:04:30.17\00:04:35.00 Everything that God does for His children 00:04:35.04\00:04:36.91 is meant for their benefit, for their well-being. 00:04:36.94\00:04:40.54 And so, let me give you a glance of the week 00:04:40.58\00:04:45.31 and what we're going to be talking about. 00:04:45.35\00:04:47.58 Here's part of what we will be talking about 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.58 what imagery did the Lord use 00:04:49.62\00:04:51.45 to describe His relationship with Israel? 00:04:51.49\00:04:54.36 In what ways do the stories of the Exodus and Sinai 00:04:54.39\00:04:58.79 parallel personal salvation? 00:04:58.83\00:05:01.46 And what was the role of the law 00:05:01.50\00:05:04.97 in the Sinai covenant? 00:05:05.00\00:05:07.67 So with this in mind, 00:05:07.70\00:05:09.20 let us go ahead and go to Sunday's part. 00:05:09.24\00:05:11.77 And this part is entitled On Eagles' Wings, 00:05:11.81\00:05:14.71 On Eagles' Wings. 00:05:14.74\00:05:16.91 The people of Israel were immersed in paganism 00:05:16.95\00:05:22.05 during their journey, 00:05:22.08\00:05:23.42 or during their time they were in Egypt. 00:05:23.45\00:05:27.02 They were there for over 400 years, 00:05:27.06\00:05:28.52 and they lost a knowledge of God, 00:05:28.56\00:05:31.49 a knowledge of His goodness, a knowledge of His mercy. 00:05:31.53\00:05:33.83 If they saw the practice of paganism, 00:05:33.86\00:05:36.97 they began to forget 00:05:37.00\00:05:38.73 about God's love and God's goodness. 00:05:38.77\00:05:41.30 So when we get to Exodus 19:4, 00:05:41.34\00:05:46.01 a declaration is made that is very powerful. 00:05:46.04\00:05:50.05 Notice, Exodus 19:4, 00:05:50.08\00:05:52.81 "You have seen 00:05:52.85\00:05:55.32 what I did to the Egyptians, 00:05:55.35\00:05:56.79 and how I bore you on eagles' wings 00:05:56.82\00:05:59.95 and brought you to Myself." 00:05:59.99\00:06:03.09 Now, this is, was stated 00:06:03.12\00:06:05.93 so that the people of Israel can realize 00:06:05.96\00:06:08.80 they were in a condition of bondage, 00:06:08.83\00:06:11.10 they were slaves, 00:06:11.13\00:06:13.23 and to them, 00:06:13.27\00:06:15.07 getting out of that situation 00:06:15.10\00:06:16.67 seemed like it would never happen. 00:06:16.71\00:06:19.24 But God, through a series of miracles, 00:06:19.27\00:06:22.81 brought them out of Egypt. 00:06:22.84\00:06:24.28 And it says here, bore them on eagles' wings. 00:06:24.31\00:06:27.48 This is a very interesting declaration. 00:06:27.52\00:06:30.62 In fact, I took the time to look at some videos, 00:06:30.65\00:06:35.22 and I saw this video of an eagle on its nest. 00:06:35.26\00:06:39.89 Somebody went way up there, 00:06:39.93\00:06:42.06 because they put their nest way up into the mountains. 00:06:42.10\00:06:44.67 And they had not only a camera, but a microphone. 00:06:44.70\00:06:48.90 And there was this mother eagle 00:06:48.94\00:06:50.94 with his chicks beneath her 00:06:50.97\00:06:53.51 with her wings outstretched, 00:06:53.54\00:06:54.88 and there was this powerful wind blowing. 00:06:54.91\00:06:57.88 And the title of the video said, 00:06:57.91\00:07:01.72 how a mother eagle takes care of her young. 00:07:01.75\00:07:04.42 And she was there, from time to time 00:07:04.45\00:07:05.85 she will look below to make sure they're all safe, 00:07:05.89\00:07:08.52 nice and warm, protected. 00:07:08.56\00:07:11.03 And this is a picture of how God is for with us. 00:07:11.06\00:07:15.10 He wants to protect us. 00:07:15.13\00:07:16.70 That's why you have so many powerful scriptures, 00:07:16.73\00:07:19.23 illustrating God's love and tender mercy toward us. 00:07:19.27\00:07:24.51 Let's go to Deuteronomy Chapter 32, 00:07:24.54\00:07:27.28 and let's begin in verse 10 00:07:27.31\00:07:29.44 to see what we have here. 00:07:29.48\00:07:31.75 "He found him in a desert land and in the wasteland, 00:07:31.78\00:07:35.22 a howling wilderness, 00:07:35.25\00:07:37.15 He encircled him, He instructed him, 00:07:37.19\00:07:41.19 He kept him as the apple of His eye. 00:07:41.22\00:07:45.76 As an eagle stirs up its nest, 00:07:45.79\00:07:47.66 hovers over its young, spreading out its wings, 00:07:47.70\00:07:51.60 taking them up, and carrying them on its wings, 00:07:51.63\00:07:54.80 so the Lord alone led him, 00:07:54.84\00:07:58.07 and there was no foreign god with him." 00:07:58.11\00:08:00.54 So again, we see here a picture of a merciful, 00:08:00.58\00:08:04.15 tender, loving God, taking care of His children. 00:08:04.18\00:08:08.68 And this is the care that God has for us. 00:08:08.72\00:08:11.69 I mean, when you go to the New Testament, 00:08:11.72\00:08:13.99 you see Jesus telling to people, 00:08:14.02\00:08:15.92 take no thought for tomorrow. 00:08:15.96\00:08:18.09 He tells them, don't worry. 00:08:18.13\00:08:20.16 Look at the fields, 00:08:20.20\00:08:21.63 see how God takes care of the fields. 00:08:21.66\00:08:23.87 See how God takes care of the birds. 00:08:23.90\00:08:26.07 If He takes care of birds, you are more value than birds, 00:08:26.10\00:08:29.97 God will take care of you. 00:08:30.01\00:08:31.87 And so, let's go to now to Deuteronomy 1:29. 00:08:31.91\00:08:37.61 Deuteronomy 1:29, let's read till verse 31. 00:08:37.65\00:08:42.12 "Then I said to you, 00:08:42.15\00:08:43.49 'Do not be terrified, or afraid of them. 00:08:43.52\00:08:46.59 The Lord your God, 00:08:46.62\00:08:48.22 who goes before you, He will fight for you, 00:08:48.26\00:08:51.16 according to all He did for you in Egypt 00:08:51.19\00:08:53.80 before your eyes, 00:08:53.83\00:08:55.46 and in the wilderness 00:08:55.50\00:08:56.87 where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, 00:08:56.90\00:08:59.80 as a man carries his son, 00:08:59.83\00:09:02.40 in all the way that you went until you came to this place.'" 00:09:02.44\00:09:08.08 Here again, we see a picture of a fatherly care 00:09:08.11\00:09:13.65 that God has for His children. 00:09:13.68\00:09:16.28 He carried them and we read, He encircles them, 00:09:16.32\00:09:19.55 He instructs them. 00:09:19.59\00:09:21.29 Again, everything that God does for His children 00:09:21.32\00:09:24.56 is because He has thoughts of peace concerning us. 00:09:24.59\00:09:28.20 So I encourage you to approach God, 00:09:28.23\00:09:30.37 learn about His loving care, 00:09:30.40\00:09:32.23 learn about His plan of salvation, 00:09:32.27\00:09:34.50 dig deep into the plan of salvation. 00:09:34.54\00:09:36.34 And during this quarterly, 00:09:36.37\00:09:38.61 you're getting wonderful messages 00:09:38.64\00:09:42.28 of God's everlasting covenant and His love for His people 00:09:42.31\00:09:45.78 because He wants to have this relationship with us 00:09:45.81\00:09:49.18 that is so close, 00:09:49.22\00:09:51.09 so close that you would say 00:09:51.12\00:09:52.55 I rather be with God 00:09:52.59\00:09:54.06 than anything else in this world, 00:09:54.09\00:09:56.39 beyond riches, 00:09:56.42\00:09:57.76 beyond homes that I could purchase, 00:09:57.79\00:09:59.59 beyond trips that I could take around the world, 00:09:59.63\00:10:01.50 I rather be with God. 00:10:01.53\00:10:03.53 When you spend time with God, 00:10:03.57\00:10:05.43 it seems like time just goes by so fast. 00:10:05.47\00:10:08.50 When you're digging into God's Word, 00:10:08.54\00:10:10.64 and you begin to feel that warmth feeling 00:10:10.67\00:10:13.41 and that peace, 00:10:13.44\00:10:15.04 that time comes that you have to go to work, 00:10:15.08\00:10:17.78 or have to go somewhere, 00:10:17.81\00:10:19.21 oh, man, I have to do this. 00:10:19.25\00:10:21.42 And it's almost like you don't want to detach from yourself 00:10:21.45\00:10:25.35 from that study 00:10:25.39\00:10:26.72 and that time spent with God. 00:10:26.76\00:10:28.72 But the wonderful thing is, 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.49 that wherever we go, God goes with us. 00:10:30.53\00:10:34.10 And we can continue in prayer, and stay close to the Lord. 00:10:34.13\00:10:39.33 Let's go now to this message that is written the lesson 00:10:39.37\00:10:44.74 because it's very, very interesting 00:10:44.77\00:10:46.68 concerning the eagle. 00:10:46.71\00:10:48.04 The eagle was known 00:10:48.08\00:10:49.41 for its unusual devotion to its young. 00:10:49.44\00:10:52.05 It too lived on mountaintops. 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.58 In teaching its young to fly it carried them upon its back 00:10:54.62\00:10:58.69 to those great heights into the depths. 00:10:58.72\00:11:02.32 If the baby was still too young and too bewildered to fly, 00:11:02.36\00:11:05.79 father-eagle would swoop down beneath it, 00:11:05.83\00:11:09.50 and catch it on his back, 00:11:09.53\00:11:10.97 and fly up again 00:11:11.00\00:11:12.93 with it to the eyrie on the crags above. 00:11:12.97\00:11:17.21 And that, says the divine voice, is 00:11:17.24\00:11:19.44 'How I brought you out of Egypt to myself.'" 00:11:19.47\00:11:22.91 You know, there are some people that study animals, 00:11:22.94\00:11:24.58 and some of them have said, 00:11:24.61\00:11:25.95 "Well, I have never seen this." 00:11:25.98\00:11:27.42 But there are testimonies of people that have. 00:11:27.45\00:11:29.78 I mean, the internet is such a... 00:11:29.82\00:11:31.92 You can have resources there to find this out. 00:11:31.95\00:11:35.16 And one of the things I read was 00:11:35.19\00:11:37.83 that this father and son were out in the wilderness, 00:11:37.86\00:11:41.60 and they actually saw an eagle doing this. 00:11:41.63\00:11:45.70 They were watching for about an hour and a half. 00:11:45.73\00:11:49.60 And they saw the eagle repeatedly do this. 00:11:49.64\00:11:53.14 And he would push the young outside of the nest 00:11:53.17\00:11:56.28 and the little baby would start going down 00:11:56.31\00:11:59.65 and they saw, at one time they wait, 00:11:59.68\00:12:01.52 he waited till about 150 feet. 00:12:01.55\00:12:04.92 And when the father eagle or mother, 00:12:04.95\00:12:07.76 we don't know which one it was, 00:12:07.79\00:12:10.29 knew that or saw that 00:12:10.33\00:12:11.96 little baby was not fluttering his wings 00:12:11.99\00:12:13.60 and actually flying 00:12:13.63\00:12:15.06 would com beneath, catch them, 00:12:15.10\00:12:17.17 carry them back up to its nest. 00:12:17.20\00:12:20.27 And the testimony says, 00:12:20.30\00:12:22.70 "We were waiting and waiting 00:12:22.74\00:12:24.07 to see if this will happen again. 00:12:24.11\00:12:25.57 And at one point, 00:12:25.61\00:12:26.94 waited about 15 minutes before trying again." 00:12:26.98\00:12:29.58 You know, this is very interesting to me. 00:12:29.61\00:12:31.61 Because God is so merciful, so kind, 00:12:31.65\00:12:35.78 that He waits till He knows we're ready 00:12:35.82\00:12:40.52 before He gives us or allows us to be tried. 00:12:40.56\00:12:45.16 He is patient and loving. 00:12:45.19\00:12:47.13 You know Satan, 00:12:47.16\00:12:48.56 the Bible points out that he is as a roaring lion 00:12:48.60\00:12:51.50 seeking whom he may devour. 00:12:51.53\00:12:53.27 And you don't know it, 00:12:53.30\00:12:55.14 but God every day is protecting you 00:12:55.17\00:12:58.11 from all the attacks of the enemy. 00:12:58.14\00:13:00.51 Every day, the devil would like to end your life, 00:13:00.54\00:13:04.41 but God has His powerful angel 00:13:04.45\00:13:05.95 and they say, "No, you cannot do that." 00:13:05.98\00:13:08.75 Oh, how the devil would love to destroy you. 00:13:08.78\00:13:11.49 But God in His mercy has kept you alive. 00:13:11.52\00:13:14.16 And every day, 00:13:14.19\00:13:15.52 every hour that you're alive, praise the Lord. 00:13:15.56\00:13:18.73 Praise the Lord. 00:13:18.76\00:13:20.10 I want to end with this thought 00:13:20.13\00:13:22.46 that we have here in Psalms 34:7-8. 00:13:22.50\00:13:27.24 I'm going to read it quickly, 00:13:27.27\00:13:28.60 "The angel of the Lord 00:13:28.64\00:13:30.17 encamps all around those who fear Him, 00:13:30.21\00:13:33.17 and delivers them. 00:13:33.21\00:13:34.84 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good, 00:13:34.88\00:13:39.11 blessed is the man and woman who trusts in Him!" 00:13:39.15\00:13:43.28 So I want to encourage you 00:13:43.32\00:13:45.05 to trust in the Lord completely. 00:13:45.09\00:13:48.09 And if you're in the hands of the Lord, 00:13:48.12\00:13:50.13 He will not allow anything that will come to you 00:13:50.16\00:13:53.16 that is not meant to benefit you and bless you. 00:13:53.19\00:13:57.27 Amen. Amen. Thank you, Pastor Dinzey. 00:13:57.30\00:13:59.80 Wow, what a way to begin the lesson. 00:13:59.83\00:14:02.20 And I start now with The Pattern of Salvation, 00:14:02.24\00:14:05.41 The Pattern of Salvation. 00:14:05.44\00:14:06.91 You know, the greatest gift that God has ever extended 00:14:06.94\00:14:10.05 to humanity is salvation. 00:14:10.08\00:14:13.31 And there is no other gift, 00:14:13.35\00:14:14.98 I can even imagine a possessions, 00:14:15.02\00:14:18.55 a position in life, 00:14:18.59\00:14:20.29 a recognition in society 00:14:20.32\00:14:21.66 that's greater than the gift of salvation, 00:14:21.69\00:14:23.89 because it's a gift that has appeared to all. 00:14:23.93\00:14:26.46 When you think about Titus, he says, 00:14:26.49\00:14:27.86 "The grace of God that bringeth salvation 00:14:27.90\00:14:29.76 has appeared to all men, 00:14:29.80\00:14:31.90 regardless of station in life." 00:14:31.93\00:14:34.30 But the writer wanted to bring up particularly 00:14:34.34\00:14:36.44 the pattern of salvation. 00:14:36.47\00:14:38.34 Where do we find in the Exodus story, 00:14:38.37\00:14:40.54 the pattern of salvation being established. 00:14:40.58\00:14:43.21 Let's begin by going to Exodus 6:6-7. 00:14:43.24\00:14:47.62 And we're going to talk about what salvation is. 00:14:47.65\00:14:49.28 A lot of times people don't understand 00:14:49.32\00:14:51.45 salvation in its entirety, but it's a total package. 00:14:51.49\00:14:54.72 It's not a one step or two step process. 00:14:54.76\00:14:57.56 We will see what the Bible has to say. 00:14:57.59\00:14:58.93 I'm reading in the King James Version, 00:14:58.96\00:15:00.30 here it says, 00:15:00.33\00:15:01.66 "Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, 00:15:01.70\00:15:03.37 I am the Lord, 00:15:03.40\00:15:05.17 and I will bring you out 00:15:05.20\00:15:06.60 from under the burdens of the Egyptians," 00:15:06.63\00:15:09.54 Salvation removes us from our burdens, 00:15:09.57\00:15:12.67 "and I will rid you out of their bondage," 00:15:12.71\00:15:15.98 salvation breaks the chords that bound us, 00:15:16.01\00:15:20.12 "I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, 00:15:20.15\00:15:24.22 and with great judgment: 00:15:24.25\00:15:26.39 And I will take you to me for a people, 00:15:26.42\00:15:30.26 and I will be to you a God: 00:15:30.29\00:15:32.43 and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, 00:15:32.46\00:15:35.36 which bringeth you out 00:15:35.40\00:15:36.80 from under the burdens of the Egyptians." 00:15:36.83\00:15:40.74 There are people watching today that have burdens. 00:15:40.77\00:15:43.00 And I want to tell you very clearly, 00:15:43.04\00:15:46.47 cast your burdens upon the Lord, 00:15:46.51\00:15:48.91 and He will take care of you. 00:15:48.94\00:15:50.41 Salvation removes the largest burden, 00:15:50.45\00:15:53.78 a burden that 00:15:53.82\00:15:55.15 we are individually not responsible for. 00:15:55.18\00:15:57.62 You know, the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:22, 00:15:57.65\00:16:01.09 "As in Adam all die, 00:16:01.12\00:16:02.89 even so in Christ, all shall be made alive." 00:16:02.92\00:16:05.63 And many people think that somehow, 00:16:05.66\00:16:07.40 if they've done something wrong, 00:16:07.43\00:16:08.86 then they need salvation. 00:16:08.90\00:16:10.23 Let me make it clear. 00:16:10.27\00:16:11.60 You can live a perfectly marked free life, 00:16:11.63\00:16:14.87 no infractions, pay your taxes, have perfect health. 00:16:14.90\00:16:18.51 As somebody once said, "He died in perfect health." 00:16:18.54\00:16:22.34 Death is still waiting for us 00:16:22.38\00:16:23.71 because the wages of sin is death. 00:16:23.75\00:16:25.91 And there are some individuals who say, 00:16:25.95\00:16:27.28 "I'm a good person, I've done nothing wrong. 00:16:27.32\00:16:29.25 I'm good in the community, I pay my taxes." 00:16:29.28\00:16:32.12 They outline the things that they do. 00:16:32.15\00:16:34.52 But when the Bible says, 00:16:34.56\00:16:36.46 "Behold, the Lamb of God 00:16:36.49\00:16:37.83 that taketh away the sin of the world," 00:16:37.86\00:16:39.53 John 1:29. 00:16:39.56\00:16:41.73 John was talking about the condition of humanity, 00:16:41.76\00:16:46.23 not so much the things that we do, 00:16:46.27\00:16:48.10 because of our condition. 00:16:48.14\00:16:49.60 The condition precedes the actions. 00:16:49.64\00:16:52.07 So you have John 1:29, 00:16:52.11\00:16:54.98 talking about the mission of Christ, 00:16:55.01\00:16:56.54 He shall save His people from their sin. 00:16:56.58\00:16:59.11 That's the condition. 00:16:59.15\00:17:00.48 But Matthew 1:21 says, 00:17:00.52\00:17:03.28 He will... Sorry, let me go. 00:17:03.32\00:17:05.19 Say it again, yeah, 00:17:05.22\00:17:06.55 "He shall save His people from their sin." 00:17:06.59\00:17:07.92 But Matthew 1:21, call His name Jesus, 00:17:07.96\00:17:10.56 He shall save His people from their sins. 00:17:10.59\00:17:13.06 So you have the condition, then you have the action. 00:17:13.09\00:17:16.63 The condition produces the actions. 00:17:16.67\00:17:18.43 And you never know 00:17:18.47\00:17:19.80 what the actions are going to be. 00:17:19.83\00:17:21.17 But every one of us are predisposed 00:17:21.20\00:17:23.84 to some kind of sin in our lives, 00:17:23.87\00:17:26.21 because we all inherited a fallen nature from Adam. 00:17:26.24\00:17:30.18 So when the Bible talks about coming out, 00:17:30.21\00:17:31.95 bringing you out of that bondage, 00:17:31.98\00:17:33.68 it talks about this salvific picture here 00:17:33.72\00:17:36.58 that's given to us in Exodus. 00:17:36.62\00:17:38.45 We also have another picture 00:17:38.49\00:17:39.82 that's given to us in the Bible. 00:17:39.85\00:17:41.69 God's saving Noah and his family, 00:17:41.72\00:17:44.56 bringing them into an ark. 00:17:44.59\00:17:46.23 So salvation doesn't just bring you out, 00:17:46.26\00:17:48.86 but it brings you in. 00:17:48.90\00:17:50.50 It brings you into a relationship with Christ. 00:17:50.53\00:17:53.23 If all salvation did was bring us out, 00:17:53.27\00:17:55.80 then we are now in the same condition, 00:17:55.84\00:17:57.37 but we're out. 00:17:57.41\00:17:58.74 We're out of the house. 00:17:58.77\00:18:00.11 And I like the fact that people say, 00:18:00.14\00:18:02.24 you shall know the truth 00:18:02.28\00:18:03.61 and the truth shall set you free. 00:18:03.65\00:18:05.21 No, the truth shall make you free. 00:18:05.25\00:18:08.25 Salvation is concerned about 00:18:08.28\00:18:10.55 what they call the recidivism rate. 00:18:10.59\00:18:12.79 In other words, if you are just saved, 00:18:12.82\00:18:14.79 and you are given a second chance 00:18:14.82\00:18:16.76 to do what you couldn't do the first time, 00:18:16.79\00:18:18.93 then it's just a matter of time 00:18:18.96\00:18:20.30 before you go back to who you were before. 00:18:20.33\00:18:22.56 But when you are saved, 00:18:22.60\00:18:23.93 you now partake of a divine nature, 00:18:23.97\00:18:26.10 having escaped the lust that is in the world. 00:18:26.13\00:18:29.94 You are given a divine nature, 00:18:29.97\00:18:31.97 meaning you are partaking of a power 00:18:32.01\00:18:34.24 that you never had before. 00:18:34.28\00:18:35.71 And that power as Philippians says, 00:18:35.74\00:18:38.08 "For it is God who works in you 00:18:38.11\00:18:40.52 both to will and to do of His good pleasure." 00:18:40.55\00:18:43.42 And then the Apostle Paul 00:18:43.45\00:18:44.92 in my favorite book Philippians, again, 00:18:44.95\00:18:46.65 "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it." 00:18:46.69\00:18:49.59 So salvation is, now the Lord is taking over. 00:18:49.62\00:18:51.73 He's moving in, 00:18:51.76\00:18:53.09 Christ in you the hope of glory. 00:18:53.13\00:18:55.30 This is not about you. 00:18:55.33\00:18:56.83 Salvation is not about what you're able to do. 00:18:56.87\00:18:58.93 So some people say, 00:18:58.97\00:19:00.30 "Well, I don't want to do that. 00:19:00.34\00:19:01.67 I don't want to do this." 00:19:01.70\00:19:03.04 But salvation also requires a spirit of participation. 00:19:03.07\00:19:06.44 United together with Christ, we are co-laborers, 00:19:06.47\00:19:09.44 not laborers for saving others, 00:19:09.48\00:19:11.35 but the most important labor saving ourselves. 00:19:11.38\00:19:14.22 We have to participate in the process. 00:19:14.25\00:19:16.08 And so you find these pictures of salvation, 00:19:16.12\00:19:19.82 like in 2 Samuel 3:18, 00:19:19.85\00:19:22.19 we find that God saved Israel in times of conflict 00:19:22.22\00:19:25.23 and God saved Israel in times of war. 00:19:25.26\00:19:27.83 2 Samuel 3:18. 00:19:27.86\00:19:29.66 The Bible says, 00:19:29.70\00:19:31.03 "Now then, do it! 00:19:31.07\00:19:32.50 For the Lord has spoken today that saying, 00:19:32.53\00:19:35.04 'By the hand of My servant David, 00:19:35.07\00:19:36.71 I will save My people 00:19:36.74\00:19:39.71 Israel from the hand of the Philistines 00:19:39.74\00:19:41.74 and the hand of all their enemies.'" 00:19:41.78\00:19:44.28 The Lord also not just saves you 00:19:44.31\00:19:47.22 and put you back in the right condition. 00:19:47.25\00:19:49.48 As a matter of fact, let me go with you 00:19:49.52\00:19:51.65 to the three actions of salvation. 00:19:51.69\00:19:53.62 Let's go to Ephesians 2:8-9. 00:19:53.66\00:19:56.22 Let's look at salvation in three stages, 00:19:56.26\00:19:58.73 because a lot of us think, well, I'm saved, sanctified, 00:19:58.76\00:20:01.10 filled with the Holy Ghost. 00:20:01.13\00:20:02.70 I'm on this irreversible conveyor belt, 00:20:02.73\00:20:04.63 I'm locked down, I'm handcuffed, 00:20:04.67\00:20:06.00 I can't go back. 00:20:06.03\00:20:07.37 Nothing is further from the truth. 00:20:07.40\00:20:09.37 Let's look at this. 00:20:09.40\00:20:10.74 And in three phrases, 00:20:10.77\00:20:12.11 three phrases, not two, three phrases 00:20:12.14\00:20:14.21 that we often hear, 00:20:14.24\00:20:15.58 but don't understand very clearly. 00:20:15.61\00:20:16.95 Ephesians 2:8-9, do you have that, Shelley? 00:20:16.98\00:20:19.31 I do. Read it for me. 00:20:19.35\00:20:21.05 Ephesians 2:8 says, 00:20:21.08\00:20:23.22 "For by grace you have been saved 00:20:23.25\00:20:24.65 through faith, 00:20:24.69\00:20:26.02 that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, 00:20:26.05\00:20:29.56 not of works, lest anyone should boast." 00:20:29.59\00:20:33.03 So this is the salvation called justification. 00:20:33.06\00:20:38.03 Listen, you can't do anything to justify yourself, 00:20:38.07\00:20:41.17 because you are the one that's held in bondage 00:20:41.20\00:20:44.04 any more than a prisoner can open his cell 00:20:44.07\00:20:46.21 and let himself out. 00:20:46.24\00:20:47.58 This salvation is an act of God. 00:20:47.61\00:20:49.78 It's called justification. 00:20:49.81\00:20:52.05 And when you are justified, 00:20:52.08\00:20:53.82 what happens immediately 00:20:53.85\00:20:55.55 is you are removed 00:20:55.58\00:20:57.05 from under the penalty of death. 00:20:57.09\00:21:01.02 The death penalty 00:21:01.06\00:21:02.39 no longer hangs over your head. 00:21:02.42\00:21:03.89 You are taken out of the prison house, 00:21:03.93\00:21:05.96 you are brought out of bondage, 00:21:05.99\00:21:07.40 you are standing before God, 00:21:07.43\00:21:09.56 as though you have never sinned. 00:21:09.60\00:21:11.57 And that's not anything that you can do. 00:21:11.60\00:21:14.00 But let's look at the second stage. 00:21:14.04\00:21:18.17 1 Corinthians 1:18. 00:21:18.21\00:21:19.71 And, Jill, if you could read this one for me? 00:21:19.74\00:21:21.81 This is the second stage, and this is necessary. 00:21:21.84\00:21:26.15 1 Corinthians 1:18, 00:21:26.18\00:21:27.52 "For the message of the cross is foolishness 00:21:27.55\00:21:29.68 to those who are perishing, 00:21:29.72\00:21:31.05 but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God." 00:21:31.09\00:21:34.22 Notice, who are being saved. 00:21:34.26\00:21:36.73 Wait a minute, you just said for by grace, 00:21:36.76\00:21:39.03 you have been saved. 00:21:39.06\00:21:40.43 How could you be in the condition 00:21:40.46\00:21:41.80 of being saved? 00:21:41.83\00:21:43.16 Because sanctification is the beauty of the gospel. 00:21:43.20\00:21:46.60 So many people come in as one person says, 00:21:46.63\00:21:49.24 "We come into at baptism pool. 00:21:49.27\00:21:50.91 We go down as a dry sinner come up a wet sinner." 00:21:50.94\00:21:54.44 There's no transforming grace. 00:21:54.48\00:21:55.81 And so many of us think that 00:21:55.84\00:21:57.18 by believing a new set of doctrines 00:21:57.21\00:21:59.41 that we are saved. 00:21:59.45\00:22:00.78 Nothing could be further from the truth. 00:22:00.82\00:22:02.55 Doctrines can't save you, 00:22:02.58\00:22:03.92 the Sabbath can't even save you, 00:22:03.95\00:22:05.45 the Ten Commandments can't save you, 00:22:05.49\00:22:07.22 you are saved by grace through faith. 00:22:07.26\00:22:08.72 But in this saving relationship, 00:22:08.76\00:22:10.79 now you enter into a process 00:22:10.83\00:22:12.59 where the old man is being consumed. 00:22:12.63\00:22:15.26 And the Lord is teaching you 00:22:15.30\00:22:16.97 what it means to walk in the newness of life. 00:22:17.00\00:22:19.90 But it is He who is saving you. 00:22:19.93\00:22:21.90 That's why John says, in 1 John 3:2, he says, 00:22:21.94\00:22:26.04 "It has not yet been revealed what you shall be, 00:22:26.07\00:22:30.38 but know this, 00:22:30.41\00:22:31.75 that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, 00:22:31.78\00:22:34.78 for we will see Him as He is." 00:22:34.82\00:22:36.75 Now you know, when you first accept Christ, 00:22:36.79\00:22:38.89 you not like Jesus, you still have to grow on that. 00:22:38.92\00:22:41.36 We are growing in grace, not into grace. 00:22:41.39\00:22:44.29 But let's go to the last stage of the pattern of salvation. 00:22:44.33\00:22:47.66 This is called glorification. 00:22:47.70\00:22:49.46 Isaiah 25:9, I'll read that for the interest of time. 00:22:49.50\00:22:52.93 Isaiah 25:9, 00:22:52.97\00:22:56.10 "And it will be said in that day: 00:22:56.14\00:22:57.97 'Behold, this is our God, we have waited for Him, 00:22:58.01\00:23:02.38 He will save us. 00:23:02.41\00:23:05.65 This is the Lord, we have waited for Him, 00:23:05.68\00:23:08.28 we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation." 00:23:08.32\00:23:10.89 Notice, he will save us. 00:23:10.92\00:23:13.05 Wait a minute, you have been saved, 00:23:13.09\00:23:14.49 you are being saved and you will be saved. 00:23:14.52\00:23:16.83 This is glorification. 00:23:16.86\00:23:18.23 This is God now removing all the scaffolding 00:23:18.26\00:23:22.83 of the work that He had been doing in your life 00:23:22.86\00:23:24.63 and presenting you, 00:23:24.67\00:23:26.23 as the Bible says 00:23:26.27\00:23:27.60 before His presence with exceeding joy, how? 00:23:27.64\00:23:31.54 Faultless, that's glorification. 00:23:31.57\00:23:33.71 So if you want to be justified, accept Christ now. 00:23:33.74\00:23:37.01 But when you accept Him, 00:23:37.05\00:23:38.38 you enter into a sanctifying relationship, 00:23:38.41\00:23:40.25 learning what it means to walk in the newness of life, 00:23:40.28\00:23:42.85 giving God the opportunity to work in you 00:23:42.88\00:23:45.45 to reproduce His character 00:23:45.49\00:23:46.86 so that one day you'll be glorified 00:23:46.89\00:23:49.32 and you'll see the Lord just as He is 00:23:49.36\00:23:52.26 for finally by saved by the salvation work, 00:23:52.29\00:23:55.40 you'll be just like Him. 00:23:55.43\00:23:58.17 Amen and amen. 00:23:58.20\00:23:59.63 Well, the blessings will continue in a moment 00:23:59.67\00:24:01.90 after this short break. 00:24:01.94\00:24:03.27 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:09.64\00:24:10.98 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:24:11.01\00:24:13.08 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? We continue with this study. 00:24:40.74\00:24:43.14 And now we go to Sister Shelley Quinn 00:24:43.18\00:24:44.78 that has Tuesday's portion. 00:24:44.81\00:24:46.35 Oh, and I'm so excited about Tuesday's portion. 00:24:46.38\00:24:49.92 This is The Sinai Covenant. 00:24:49.95\00:24:53.46 There were three major events that happened in Exodus, 00:24:53.49\00:24:56.99 the Book of Exodus. 00:24:57.03\00:24:58.36 One was the exodus from Egypt, 00:24:58.39\00:25:01.16 then the establishment of the covenant 00:25:01.20\00:25:05.17 and the building of the tabernacle. 00:25:05.20\00:25:08.40 The tabernacle was theology in physical form. 00:25:08.44\00:25:12.41 Most of these people didn't even read. 00:25:12.44\00:25:14.88 So God shows them 00:25:14.91\00:25:17.11 the plan of salvation in the tabernacle. 00:25:17.15\00:25:20.12 And it was to show them 00:25:20.15\00:25:21.48 how they were going to be saved 00:25:21.52\00:25:22.85 by grace through faith, 00:25:22.88\00:25:24.25 and it all pointed to the coming Messiah. 00:25:24.29\00:25:29.19 Now, I keep saying that all of God's covenants 00:25:29.22\00:25:33.09 are a progressive unfolding of the everlasting covenant, 00:25:33.13\00:25:38.83 which is Revelation 13:8, 00:25:38.87\00:25:40.84 "The Lamb slain 00:25:40.87\00:25:42.20 from the foundation of the world." 00:25:42.24\00:25:43.74 Please turn if you have your Bibles 00:25:43.77\00:25:45.57 to Exodus 2:24, 00:25:45.61\00:25:48.58 because most people think of the Old Covenant, 00:25:48.61\00:25:51.88 the Sinai covenant 00:25:51.91\00:25:53.65 as being something that's totally different. 00:25:53.68\00:25:56.79 Yet, Exodus establishes 00:25:56.82\00:25:59.75 that it is a continuation 00:25:59.79\00:26:01.99 of the Abrahamic everlasting covenant. 00:26:02.02\00:26:04.79 Exodus 2:24, 00:26:04.83\00:26:06.56 God hears the Hebrew children crying out, 00:26:06.59\00:26:09.66 and He acts. 00:26:09.70\00:26:11.03 It says, "God heard their groaning, 00:26:11.07\00:26:13.07 and God remembered His covenant," 00:26:13.10\00:26:16.47 what covenant? 00:26:16.50\00:26:17.84 "With Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." 00:26:17.87\00:26:20.48 In the Bible, when they use the word remembered, 00:26:20.51\00:26:23.28 it isn't that God forgot, 00:26:23.31\00:26:24.95 remembered means 00:26:24.98\00:26:26.48 He's getting ready to act upon it. 00:26:26.51\00:26:28.35 When he says God forgets, 00:26:28.38\00:26:31.25 then it means He's not going to act upon it. 00:26:31.29\00:26:33.92 But God's getting ready to act on His Abraham covenant. 00:26:33.96\00:26:38.46 So when we get to Exodus 19, 00:26:38.49\00:26:40.76 let me just give you a quick time line. 00:26:40.80\00:26:43.83 What we do is in the beginning of Exodus 19, 00:26:43.87\00:26:46.87 we see the children have already been redeemed. 00:26:46.90\00:26:49.54 He's brought them out on the wings of an eagle. 00:26:49.57\00:26:54.34 He said, "I bore you to me on the wings of an eagle." 00:26:54.38\00:26:58.61 That's covenant love language. 00:26:58.65\00:27:00.85 And when we think some people say, 00:27:00.88\00:27:02.75 "Well, grace isn't in the Old Testament." 00:27:02.78\00:27:05.09 The word in the Old Testament is hesed, 00:27:05.12\00:27:07.92 and it is grace and it's unconditional love. 00:27:07.96\00:27:13.29 It means everything. 00:27:13.33\00:27:15.20 It's even better than grace that word. 00:27:15.23\00:27:17.90 So he's, he says to them, 00:27:17.93\00:27:20.30 "I've borne you on eagles' wings 00:27:20.34\00:27:22.40 brought you to Myself." 00:27:22.44\00:27:23.91 Now, if you will indeed, obey my voice. 00:27:23.94\00:27:27.38 In the Hebrew obey means hear. 00:27:27.41\00:27:29.11 If he says, "Hear My voice, and keep My commandments." 00:27:29.14\00:27:32.21 It's the same as saying obey My voice. 00:27:32.25\00:27:34.02 But when He says, obey my voice, 00:27:34.05\00:27:35.38 He's saying, hear My voice. 00:27:35.42\00:27:36.75 Hear me and live is what God is saying. 00:27:36.79\00:27:39.49 "If you keep my covenant, 00:27:39.52\00:27:42.09 you will be a special treasure to me, 00:27:42.12\00:27:44.19 above all the people, for the earth is mine, 00:27:44.23\00:27:47.60 and you shall be priest and a holy nation." 00:27:47.63\00:27:51.10 And so then in Exodus 19:7-8, 00:27:51.13\00:27:55.30 Moses tells the people what God has told him to say, 00:27:55.34\00:27:58.94 and they all say 00:27:58.97\00:28:00.78 everything that the Lord has said, 00:28:00.81\00:28:02.14 we will do. 00:28:02.18\00:28:03.51 What has He told them so far? 00:28:03.55\00:28:05.15 Just keep My covenant and you're going to be priest." 00:28:05.18\00:28:07.88 I mean, He hasn't really said a whole lot to them yet. 00:28:07.92\00:28:10.95 But Moses then, they start, 00:28:10.99\00:28:16.36 God tells him get them ready. 00:28:16.39\00:28:17.99 Let them be consecrated, sanctified when I come down. 00:28:18.03\00:28:22.16 So the people for two days, they're sanctifying themselves, 00:28:22.20\00:28:25.23 they're washing their clothes. 00:28:25.27\00:28:26.77 And God says, 00:28:26.80\00:28:28.24 "Put a perimeter around the mountain, 00:28:28.27\00:28:29.67 don't anybody touch the mountain?" 00:28:29.70\00:28:31.71 Then what happens? 00:28:31.74\00:28:33.07 God descends and fire with thunderings, 00:28:33.11\00:28:36.01 all these pyrotechnics, 00:28:36.04\00:28:38.38 and you know what He's doing? 00:28:38.41\00:28:40.85 When the people are afraid, Moses says, 00:28:40.88\00:28:42.68 "Hey, God was just testing you. Don't be afraid." 00:28:42.72\00:28:45.92 He's trying to show, them remind them, 00:28:45.95\00:28:47.69 I'm a powerful God. 00:28:47.72\00:28:49.69 So what happens? 00:28:49.72\00:28:51.69 Exodus 20:1-17, 00:28:51.73\00:28:54.36 God speaks 00:28:54.40\00:28:56.06 the Ten Commandment law of love. 00:28:56.10\00:28:58.43 And these Ten Commandments, 00:28:58.47\00:29:00.40 this syntax or word arrangement 00:29:00.44\00:29:02.40 shows that they are commandments, 00:29:02.44\00:29:06.94 but it's 10 words, the Decalogue. 00:29:06.98\00:29:10.18 We call them commandments, 00:29:10.21\00:29:12.35 in the Hebrew law, instruction. 00:29:12.38\00:29:15.95 So these are God's instruction of love. 00:29:15.98\00:29:20.52 And he says to them, they're in the future tense. 00:29:20.56\00:29:24.43 This is something that God, it's a promise. 00:29:24.46\00:29:27.30 So what is God's saying? 00:29:27.33\00:29:28.76 He's not saying, 00:29:28.80\00:29:30.13 "Thou shalt not have any gods above Me." 00:29:30.17\00:29:33.34 What He is saying to them, is, 00:29:33.37\00:29:37.17 if you live 00:29:37.21\00:29:38.54 in covenant relationship with Me, 00:29:38.57\00:29:40.74 you're not gonna have any gods above Me. 00:29:40.78\00:29:42.44 You're not gonna have any idols. 00:29:42.48\00:29:43.98 You're not gonna take My name in vain. 00:29:44.01\00:29:46.25 You are going to remember my Sabbath, 00:29:46.28\00:29:48.62 because you just can't wait to be with Me. 00:29:48.65\00:29:52.05 You will honor your mother and your father, 00:29:52.09\00:29:54.59 you won't murder, you won't commit adultery, 00:29:54.62\00:29:56.09 you're not going to steal, 00:29:56.12\00:29:57.46 you're not going to bear false testimony, 00:29:57.49\00:29:58.83 you're not going to covet. 00:29:58.86\00:30:00.96 Why? 00:30:01.00\00:30:02.33 Because that's what living 00:30:02.36\00:30:03.70 in covenant relationship with Me is all about. 00:30:03.73\00:30:08.07 So God is so gracious, but the people are trembling, 00:30:08.10\00:30:12.61 and they say, 00:30:12.64\00:30:13.98 "Oh, Moses, you be our mediator." 00:30:14.01\00:30:15.71 So Moses goes back up the mountain, 00:30:15.74\00:30:18.31 after God has spoken these commandments. 00:30:18.35\00:30:21.15 And what does he do? 00:30:21.18\00:30:22.55 He receives from God. 00:30:22.58\00:30:24.35 And we find it recorded in Exodus 20:22 00:30:24.39\00:30:28.76 through Exodus 23:22. 00:30:28.79\00:30:33.53 He receives from God 00:30:33.56\00:30:36.20 a special civil laws. 00:30:36.23\00:30:39.87 It is going to be a government 00:30:39.90\00:30:41.57 that is built around the Ten Commandments 00:30:41.60\00:30:44.94 in and remember, 00:30:44.97\00:30:46.31 these were people that came out of a pagan nation. 00:30:46.34\00:30:48.34 God's got to show them how to live by their moral law. 00:30:48.38\00:30:52.71 So yes, the moral law was in there, 00:30:52.75\00:30:54.48 then the civil law, then the ceremonial law. 00:30:54.52\00:30:58.19 And what does Moses do? 00:30:58.22\00:31:00.76 He writes all of these, 00:31:00.79\00:31:02.12 he comes back down the mountain, 00:31:02.16\00:31:03.53 he speaks them to the people, he writes it all in this book. 00:31:03.56\00:31:07.26 And it is called, guess what? 00:31:07.30\00:31:09.66 That Book of the Covenant. 00:31:09.70\00:31:12.63 So we find that he ratifies the covenant with blood. 00:31:12.67\00:31:18.44 He sprinkles the people and the book. 00:31:18.47\00:31:20.84 Exodus 24:7-8 says, 00:31:20.88\00:31:23.28 "He took the Book of the Covenant." 00:31:23.31\00:31:26.01 First he speaks it to the people, 00:31:26.05\00:31:28.05 then he writes it. 00:31:28.08\00:31:29.42 "He took the Book of the Covenant, 00:31:29.45\00:31:30.79 read it in the hearing of the people. 00:31:30.82\00:31:32.15 And then he said, 'All that the Lord,' 00:31:32.19\00:31:34.06 they said, all the Lord has said 00:31:34.09\00:31:35.69 will do and be obedient. 00:31:35.72\00:31:37.19 Moses took the blood sprinkled it on the people, 00:31:37.23\00:31:40.80 and he says, 00:31:40.83\00:31:42.16 'This is the blood of the covenant." 00:31:42.20\00:31:43.67 The Old Covenant is the Book of the Covenant. 00:31:43.70\00:31:48.30 And he says, 00:31:48.34\00:31:49.77 "That God has made with you according to all these words." 00:31:49.80\00:31:55.24 So after this, 00:31:55.28\00:31:56.61 Moses goes back up the mountain. 00:31:56.64\00:31:59.21 The people have just entered into a covenant. 00:31:59.25\00:32:02.38 He goes up for 40 days and 40 nights, 00:32:02.42\00:32:04.69 and God gives him the Ten Commandments. 00:32:04.72\00:32:07.69 God writes it, it says in Exodus 31:18, 00:32:07.72\00:32:10.96 "He gives him the two tablets of the testimony, 00:32:10.99\00:32:13.40 the tablets of stone, 00:32:13.43\00:32:14.76 written with the finger of God." 00:32:14.80\00:32:17.00 And Exodus 32:16, says, 00:32:17.03\00:32:19.30 "This is the work of God, 00:32:19.33\00:32:21.34 the writing was the writing of God 00:32:21.37\00:32:23.97 engraved on the tablets." 00:32:24.01\00:32:26.34 So what happens? 00:32:26.37\00:32:27.91 He comes back down the mountain. 00:32:27.94\00:32:30.15 What's happened with the covenant 00:32:30.18\00:32:31.51 that the people just made? 00:32:31.55\00:32:33.65 He comes down, 00:32:33.68\00:32:35.02 and he finds them worshiping a golden calf. 00:32:35.05\00:32:38.15 They have totally broken the covenant. 00:32:38.19\00:32:41.99 Moses is so upset, 00:32:42.02\00:32:43.66 he throws down the stones 00:32:43.69\00:32:45.79 that God had just written on. 00:32:45.83\00:32:47.70 He breaks the tablets of stone. 00:32:47.73\00:32:50.33 So then in Exodus 34:1, the Lord calls to Moses, 00:32:50.37\00:32:54.67 and he says, 00:32:54.70\00:32:56.04 "Cut two stones of tablets of stone 00:32:56.07\00:32:58.24 like the first ones, 00:32:58.27\00:32:59.61 and then I the Lord will write on these tablets 00:32:59.64\00:33:02.68 the words that were on the first tablets 00:33:02.71\00:33:04.68 that you broke." 00:33:04.71\00:33:06.35 And he says, again, Deuteronomy 10:2, 00:33:06.38\00:33:10.12 it just establishes, 00:33:10.15\00:33:11.95 it was God that wrote the words on these. 00:33:11.99\00:33:15.76 But in Deuteronomy 10:2, when God says, 00:33:15.79\00:33:18.73 "I will write the tablets, 00:33:18.76\00:33:21.00 that the words that were on the first tablets, 00:33:21.03\00:33:24.13 which you broke, he said, 00:33:24.17\00:33:25.63 and you shall put the stone tablets 00:33:25.67\00:33:29.77 in the ark." 00:33:29.80\00:33:31.14 Why is that important? 00:33:31.17\00:33:32.81 The ark was God's throne. 00:33:32.84\00:33:36.75 The ark shows that 00:33:36.78\00:33:39.08 putting these Ten Commandments inside God's throne, 00:33:39.11\00:33:42.72 its permanence. 00:33:42.75\00:33:44.09 They are written on stone, 00:33:44.12\00:33:45.75 and it shows that the Ten Commandments 00:33:45.79\00:33:48.42 are the basis of God's government of love. 00:33:48.46\00:33:52.89 They are the basis of His covenant. 00:33:52.93\00:33:56.06 And the interesting thing though I love this 00:33:56.10\00:33:58.23 is mercy seat is above the law of God. 00:33:58.27\00:34:02.00 Mercy always triumphs that. 00:34:02.04\00:34:04.74 But now here's the part I've got to get to. 00:34:04.77\00:34:07.38 Thirty nine years later, 00:34:07.41\00:34:09.64 when they reached the edge of the Promised Land, 00:34:09.68\00:34:12.91 Moses reiterate this Book of the Covenant. 00:34:12.95\00:34:17.45 He has all the people assembled, 00:34:17.49\00:34:20.52 he repeats, reinforces, and he records it, 00:34:20.56\00:34:24.03 now, it's not called the Book of the Covenant. 00:34:24.06\00:34:26.13 He records it is what is called the Book of the Law. 00:34:26.16\00:34:29.26 Deuteronomy means second law. 00:34:29.30\00:34:31.53 So Deuteronomy 31:26 says, 00:34:31.57\00:34:33.94 "Take this Book of the Law, 00:34:33.97\00:34:35.57 and put it beside the Ark of the Covenant 00:34:35.60\00:34:40.74 of the Lord your God, 00:34:40.78\00:34:42.11 that it may be there as a witness against you." 00:34:42.14\00:34:46.05 The Old Covenant 00:34:46.08\00:34:48.25 was the Book of the Covenant and rewritten, 00:34:48.28\00:34:51.35 it was what's called the Book of the Law. 00:34:51.39\00:34:54.26 And if you know that, 00:34:54.29\00:34:55.62 as you read through the New Testament, 00:34:55.66\00:34:57.66 you can understand what was nailed to the cross. 00:34:57.69\00:35:01.20 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:35:01.23\00:35:05.47 Well, that's interesting. 00:35:05.50\00:35:06.90 Thank you. Praise the Lord. 00:35:06.94\00:35:08.57 It's a blessing to be able to be a part of this panel 00:35:08.60\00:35:11.44 and to be able to talk about Wednesday's lesson, 00:35:11.47\00:35:13.88 God and Israel, 00:35:13.91\00:35:15.24 which is basically kind of just... 00:35:15.28\00:35:17.05 Are you okay? 00:35:20.18\00:35:21.52 As if, why you guys looking me like that? 00:35:21.55\00:35:23.45 You have some stuff in your hair. 00:35:23.49\00:35:26.55 Something snuck up on your hair. 00:35:26.59\00:35:27.96 Well, I don't see it so. 00:35:30.13\00:35:31.99 Surely, it's not there, right? 00:35:32.03\00:35:33.36 We clearly see it. 00:35:33.40\00:35:34.73 I don't know. 00:35:34.76\00:35:36.10 I mean, I know here what you're saying. 00:35:36.13\00:35:37.47 But I can't, I mean, 00:35:37.50\00:35:38.83 you guys are looking at me really weird. 00:35:38.87\00:35:40.27 I don't know what you're talking about. 00:35:40.30\00:35:41.64 Anyways... Anyways, that's kind of weird. 00:35:41.67\00:35:45.67 Anyways, so God and Israel... 00:35:45.71\00:35:47.04 Do you want me to take care of that? 00:35:47.08\00:35:49.88 Take care of what? 00:35:49.91\00:35:52.08 You got some... 00:35:52.11\00:35:53.45 Something unusual is going on in your hair. 00:35:53.48\00:35:55.38 Oh, I see, okay? 00:35:55.42\00:35:58.05 But I can't see it. 00:35:58.09\00:35:59.42 So you're telling me I have something on me. 00:35:59.45\00:36:01.32 You've got a problem. Okay. 00:36:01.36\00:36:03.32 But how am I gonna see it though? I can't. 00:36:03.36\00:36:05.03 So I'm not, I don't know that I have a problem 00:36:05.06\00:36:06.43 if I can't see it, right? 00:36:06.46\00:36:07.80 You need a mirror. Oh, that's what I need, right? 00:36:07.83\00:36:09.90 Okay. All right. 00:36:09.93\00:36:11.27 So this was a nice illustration. 00:36:11.30\00:36:12.63 I want you to remember this illustration, 00:36:12.67\00:36:14.17 because you got to have a mirror 00:36:14.20\00:36:15.70 if you can't see what's on you, right? 00:36:15.74\00:36:17.77 Everybody else can see it. Of course, I look ridiculous. 00:36:17.81\00:36:19.87 I can see myself in this monitor here. 00:36:19.91\00:36:22.28 But I want you to remember this illustration. 00:36:22.31\00:36:24.18 In just a few moments, 00:36:24.21\00:36:25.55 hopefully I don't look too stupid here. 00:36:25.58\00:36:27.05 Okay, let's go to Exodus 19. 00:36:27.08\00:36:29.22 We're going to come back to that illustration 00:36:29.25\00:36:30.65 in just a moment. 00:36:30.69\00:36:32.02 So keep that all in mind. 00:36:32.05\00:36:33.89 Exodus 19:5-6. 00:36:33.92\00:36:37.03 So Shelley set us up really nicely. 00:36:37.06\00:36:39.39 And I think what Wednesday's lesson is 00:36:39.43\00:36:41.53 bringing out is vitally important 00:36:41.56\00:36:43.23 for us to understand in relationship 00:36:43.26\00:36:45.33 or in relation to God and Israel's special covenant 00:36:45.37\00:36:49.54 that God made with Israel. 00:36:49.57\00:36:50.91 And so Exodus 19:5-6, 00:36:50.94\00:36:53.71 notice what the Bible says here. 00:36:53.74\00:36:55.11 God says, 00:36:55.14\00:36:56.48 "Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice 00:36:56.51\00:36:58.78 and keep My covenant, 00:36:58.81\00:37:00.52 then you shall be a special treasure to Me 00:37:00.55\00:37:02.85 above all people, for all the earth is Mine. 00:37:02.88\00:37:07.32 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests 00:37:07.36\00:37:09.82 and a holy nation.' 00:37:09.86\00:37:11.26 These are the words 00:37:11.29\00:37:12.63 which you shall speak to the children of Israel.'" 00:37:12.66\00:37:15.70 God had made... 00:37:15.73\00:37:17.07 He wanted to continue that special covenant. 00:37:17.10\00:37:19.17 He wanted His people 00:37:19.20\00:37:20.54 to continue in that covenant with Him, 00:37:20.57\00:37:23.20 and He wanted them to be His special people, 00:37:23.24\00:37:24.97 but there's conditions, right? 00:37:25.01\00:37:27.91 And a lot of people, 00:37:27.94\00:37:29.28 I just want to bring this out here. 00:37:29.31\00:37:30.91 Would God have asked Israel to obey His voice 00:37:30.95\00:37:34.32 and keep His covenant 00:37:34.35\00:37:35.68 if it were not possible? 00:37:35.72\00:37:38.25 And I just... I want to make that point very clear, 00:37:38.29\00:37:39.85 because a lot of people, 00:37:39.89\00:37:41.52 especially in today's time, say, Oh, the Old Covenant, 00:37:41.56\00:37:44.19 and of course, they associated with all of the, 00:37:44.23\00:37:45.99 you know, they consider old law, 00:37:46.03\00:37:47.70 you know, the old Ten Commandment law 00:37:47.73\00:37:49.56 and, well, God, Jesus comes along in the New Testament, 00:37:49.60\00:37:52.33 He nails it to the cross, and He does away with it, 00:37:52.37\00:37:54.64 because it's impossible for us to keep that law. 00:37:54.67\00:37:57.81 But it's interesting that, 00:37:57.84\00:37:59.17 you know, my Bible tells me that 00:37:59.21\00:38:00.54 God is not the author of confusion. 00:38:00.58\00:38:01.91 And He certainly wasn't going to lead Israel 00:38:01.94\00:38:03.65 into a covenant or relationship of confusion 00:38:03.68\00:38:06.68 and expect them to participate in things 00:38:06.72\00:38:09.12 or to, in this case, obey His covenant, 00:38:09.15\00:38:11.15 obey His voice, 00:38:11.19\00:38:12.55 if it was completely impossible to do so. 00:38:12.59\00:38:15.16 So I just want to start by that, 00:38:15.19\00:38:16.52 the fact that God told them, 00:38:16.56\00:38:18.33 He wants them to be His special people, 00:38:18.36\00:38:19.83 but there were certain conditions. 00:38:19.86\00:38:22.16 And that is what God wanted them to see 00:38:22.20\00:38:24.17 that in order for them 00:38:24.20\00:38:25.80 to continue in this special covenant relationship with Him, 00:38:25.83\00:38:29.60 they needed to see constantly their need of Him. 00:38:29.64\00:38:33.88 That's the most important thing, 00:38:33.91\00:38:35.24 they needed to sense their need 00:38:35.28\00:38:36.98 and their dependency on God. 00:38:37.01\00:38:39.81 And so what we see after this moment, 00:38:39.85\00:38:41.88 you know, they agree, 00:38:41.92\00:38:43.25 you know, all the Lord has said, we will do. 00:38:43.28\00:38:45.22 And, you know, it's interesting that you've checked the record 00:38:45.25\00:38:48.12 for more than 840 years after this point, 00:38:48.16\00:38:51.69 we see that there's nothing but a constant, 00:38:51.73\00:38:54.33 you know, 840 years of rebellion 00:38:54.36\00:38:56.16 on a part of Israel, 00:38:56.20\00:38:57.53 because God was constantly trying to get them to see 00:38:57.57\00:39:00.04 their need of Him. 00:39:00.07\00:39:01.60 We have to understand that 00:39:01.64\00:39:03.64 while yes, God wanted them to obey His voice 00:39:03.67\00:39:05.94 and obey that covenant. 00:39:05.97\00:39:07.31 The heart of that covenant, 00:39:07.34\00:39:08.68 as Shelley brought up beautifully 00:39:08.71\00:39:10.05 is God's Ten Commandment law 00:39:10.08\00:39:11.41 which, of course, is on display 00:39:11.45\00:39:12.78 in the very next chapter. 00:39:12.81\00:39:14.15 That is, of course, Exodus Chapter 20. 00:39:14.18\00:39:16.42 But I want us to jump over 00:39:16.45\00:39:18.49 to Romans 3:19. 00:39:18.52\00:39:23.69 We're talking about God and Israel, 00:39:23.73\00:39:26.39 this relationship, 00:39:26.43\00:39:27.76 this covenant relationship that He has. 00:39:27.80\00:39:29.46 And in order for that 00:39:29.50\00:39:30.93 covenant relationship to continue, 00:39:30.97\00:39:33.00 they have to continue to see their need of Him 00:39:33.03\00:39:35.20 and understand how much they are dependent on God, 00:39:35.24\00:39:37.87 not their own works, not their own deeds, 00:39:37.91\00:39:40.18 but God to see them through. 00:39:40.21\00:39:41.88 And so Romans Chapter 3, we're starting with verse 19. 00:39:41.91\00:39:44.18 Notice what the Bible says, Paul writes, 00:39:44.21\00:39:46.18 "Now we know that whatever the law says, 00:39:46.21\00:39:48.42 it says to those who are under the law, 00:39:48.45\00:39:51.55 that every mouth may be stopped, 00:39:51.59\00:39:53.36 and all the world may become guilty before God." 00:39:53.39\00:39:55.86 And then notice verse 20 here. 00:39:55.89\00:39:57.23 "Therefore by the deeds of the law 00:39:57.26\00:39:58.73 no flesh will be justified in His sight, 00:39:58.76\00:40:01.53 notice, for by the law is the knowledge of sin." 00:40:01.56\00:40:06.27 Okay, so did God give His covenant law to Israel 00:40:06.30\00:40:10.27 because that was their salvation in and of itself? 00:40:10.31\00:40:12.34 In other words, 00:40:12.37\00:40:13.71 were they saved by the keeping of the commandments? 00:40:13.74\00:40:15.31 Is that the way God set it up? Absolutely not. 00:40:15.34\00:40:17.61 And that's kind of goes back to my illustration, 00:40:17.65\00:40:19.28 when I had these crazy pieces of, 00:40:19.31\00:40:21.32 you know, fuzzy cloth in my hair. 00:40:21.35\00:40:23.18 I kind of opened it up being a little silly here 00:40:23.22\00:40:25.29 acting as if I didn't know, right? 00:40:25.32\00:40:26.86 And the truth of the matter is, 00:40:26.89\00:40:28.22 many of us treat our sin like that, right? 00:40:28.26\00:40:31.09 We don't see our sin 00:40:31.13\00:40:33.19 because we don't have something to measure it by 00:40:33.23\00:40:36.06 or to be able to look into that mirror. 00:40:36.10\00:40:38.60 We have to be able to look in the mirror 00:40:38.63\00:40:40.27 and be able to see what it is that might be wrong with us. 00:40:40.30\00:40:43.41 In the same case or in the same way 00:40:43.44\00:40:45.21 that is what God's law, that's how God's law serves. 00:40:45.24\00:40:47.98 It is not a means by which we are saved. 00:40:48.01\00:40:49.98 But what God is trying 00:40:50.01\00:40:51.35 to constantly get the children of Israel 00:40:51.38\00:40:52.91 to see all the way through the Old Testament 00:40:52.95\00:40:54.78 and even into the New Testament, 00:40:54.82\00:40:56.55 even in today 00:40:56.58\00:40:57.92 that while we are not saved by the Ten Commandment law, 00:40:57.95\00:41:00.52 it shows us our need of Jesus 00:41:00.56\00:41:04.13 because it shows us and reveals to us our sin. 00:41:04.16\00:41:08.06 And so, that is what Paul is saying here that, 00:41:08.10\00:41:10.33 you know, we're not justified by the deeds of the law, 00:41:10.37\00:41:12.73 no flesh is justified, 00:41:12.77\00:41:14.10 but by the law is the knowledge of sin. 00:41:14.14\00:41:17.27 Now take that in consideration 00:41:17.31\00:41:18.81 just because we're not saved by the law, 00:41:18.84\00:41:20.71 does that mean that because I'm not saved, 00:41:20.74\00:41:23.21 I'm not justified by the law. 00:41:23.24\00:41:24.58 No, I can just, you know, I can just continue 00:41:24.61\00:41:26.15 to sin, sin, sin, sin, sin, and God's okay with it, 00:41:26.18\00:41:28.35 because, you know, He didn't make it 00:41:28.38\00:41:29.78 the means by which I am saved, right? 00:41:29.82\00:41:32.55 Notice what Paul writes in Romans 6:1-2. 00:41:32.59\00:41:36.12 Romans 6:1-2. 00:41:36.16\00:41:38.26 In Roman, in the end of Romans 5, 00:41:38.29\00:41:39.73 this is a continuation by the way of Romans 5. 00:41:39.76\00:41:42.23 At the end of Romans 5, 00:41:42.26\00:41:43.60 he's just made this beautiful statement 00:41:43.63\00:41:44.97 about how but where sin has abounded 00:41:45.00\00:41:47.10 grace abounded much more. 00:41:47.14\00:41:49.57 And many people take that concept and go, 00:41:49.60\00:41:51.07 "Oh, praise the Lord, 00:41:51.11\00:41:52.44 that I can just sin, sin, sin all the while, 00:41:52.47\00:41:54.91 and then God just keeps pouring on 00:41:54.94\00:41:56.88 and just, you know, showering me 00:41:56.91\00:41:58.31 with more and more grace, the more that I continue 00:41:58.35\00:42:00.82 in my perpetual cycle or state of sin." 00:42:00.85\00:42:03.45 But yet Paul clarifies it in Romans 6:1-2, 00:42:03.49\00:42:06.29 he says, 00:42:06.32\00:42:07.66 "What shall we say? 00:42:07.69\00:42:09.02 Then in response to that, you know, as long as I sin, 00:42:09.06\00:42:11.69 God's gonna give me grace. 00:42:11.73\00:42:13.23 In other words, if I'm sinning, there's much more grace 00:42:13.26\00:42:15.76 for that sin that I've committed. 00:42:15.80\00:42:17.13 But he says, "Then what shall we say then?" 00:42:17.17\00:42:18.73 Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 00:42:18.77\00:42:22.30 He says, Certainly not! 00:42:22.34\00:42:23.87 How shall we who are dead to sin, 00:42:23.91\00:42:26.01 who had died to sin live any longer in it?" 00:42:26.04\00:42:29.68 And, of course, in that same chapters, 00:42:29.71\00:42:31.05 that famous verse 00:42:31.08\00:42:32.41 that many Christians try to use to say, 00:42:32.45\00:42:33.82 "Oh, you know, we're not under the law," right? 00:42:33.85\00:42:35.88 It's Romans 6:14, 00:42:35.92\00:42:37.55 "For sin shall not have dominion over you, 00:42:37.59\00:42:39.65 for you are not under the law but under grace." 00:42:39.69\00:42:42.99 And many Christians stop right there. 00:42:43.02\00:42:44.39 And they say, "See, I'm not under the law. 00:42:44.43\00:42:46.29 Jesus done away with that. 00:42:46.33\00:42:48.03 And because it didn't work for Israel, 00:42:48.06\00:42:50.97 it is not going to work now. 00:42:51.00\00:42:52.43 So I'm not under the law, I'm under grace." 00:42:52.47\00:42:54.30 But notice, Paul clarifies the relationship. 00:42:54.34\00:42:57.11 In verse 15, he says, 00:42:57.14\00:42:58.47 "What then? 00:42:58.51\00:42:59.84 Shall we sin because we are not under the law, 00:42:59.87\00:43:02.08 but under grace?" 00:43:02.11\00:43:03.45 He says, God forbid. Why? 00:43:03.48\00:43:05.08 Because Paul understood 00:43:05.11\00:43:06.48 that sin is the transgression of God's law. 00:43:06.51\00:43:09.35 And while we are not saved by the keeping of that law, 00:43:09.38\00:43:12.62 it is that law 00:43:12.65\00:43:14.26 that shows us our sin, oh, my goodness, 00:43:14.29\00:43:17.23 look at that nasty stuff in my hair. 00:43:17.26\00:43:18.79 Look at that nasty stuff on my face. 00:43:18.83\00:43:20.40 Look at all that sin in my life, 00:43:20.43\00:43:21.76 I can see it now, 00:43:21.80\00:43:23.16 because the law serves as a mirror 00:43:23.20\00:43:25.63 that shows me my sin. 00:43:25.67\00:43:27.24 And when I can see my sin, I sense my need of grace. 00:43:27.27\00:43:30.77 And who's the only person that's giving grace? 00:43:30.81\00:43:32.81 It's only Jesus Christ Himself, 00:43:32.84\00:43:34.58 which shows us our need of sin, 00:43:34.61\00:43:37.48 or excuse me, our need of grace because of our sin. 00:43:37.51\00:43:40.72 Romans 3:31, 00:43:40.75\00:43:42.82 I had to add this one in here as well. 00:43:42.85\00:43:44.52 "Do we then make void the law through faith," 00:43:44.55\00:43:47.36 because again, pastor read earlier 00:43:47.39\00:43:49.12 Ephesians 2:8-9, which says, 00:43:49.16\00:43:51.89 "We are saved by grace through faith." 00:43:51.93\00:43:54.60 And so people hold on to that verse and they say, 00:43:54.63\00:43:56.56 "Yes, I'm not saved by the workings of the law. 00:43:56.60\00:43:58.83 I don't have to worry 00:43:58.87\00:44:00.20 about the keeping of the Ten Commandments 00:44:00.24\00:44:01.87 or keeping in covenant relationship with the Lord 00:44:01.90\00:44:04.54 because that old covenant, it's old news, 00:44:04.57\00:44:07.68 it's not a part of my life anymore. 00:44:07.71\00:44:09.04 Jesus has saved me from that." 00:44:09.08\00:44:10.48 Yet we know that 00:44:10.51\00:44:12.01 according to Romans 3:31, it says, 00:44:12.05\00:44:14.65 "Do we make void the law through faith? 00:44:14.68\00:44:16.89 Because I'm saved through faith, 00:44:16.92\00:44:18.25 do I just toss away the law? 00:44:18.29\00:44:19.99 He says, Certainly not. 00:44:20.02\00:44:21.36 On the contrary, we establish the law. 00:44:21.39\00:44:23.46 Why is the heart of this covenant 00:44:23.49\00:44:25.83 between God and Israel, 00:44:25.86\00:44:27.23 those Ten Commandments, 00:44:27.26\00:44:28.60 that ten commandment law of love, 00:44:28.63\00:44:30.53 the heart of that covenant, 00:44:30.57\00:44:32.83 the Ten Commandment law of God, 00:44:32.87\00:44:34.44 of course, shows us our sin. 00:44:34.47\00:44:36.74 It shows us our need and it reminds us constantly 00:44:36.77\00:44:39.87 of our need of a Savior. 00:44:39.91\00:44:42.24 I found this in Ellen Ge. White's 00:44:42.28\00:44:43.75 Steps to Christ, page 61, beautiful quote, it says, 00:44:43.78\00:44:46.41 "We do not earn salvation by our obedience, 00:44:46.45\00:44:49.28 for salvation is the free gift of God 00:44:49.32\00:44:52.25 to be received by faith. 00:44:52.29\00:44:54.62 But obedience is the fruit of faith. 00:44:54.66\00:44:58.59 When we have placed our faith in God, 00:44:58.63\00:45:01.30 the God who saves us, 00:45:01.33\00:45:02.66 the God who saves us from our sin. 00:45:02.70\00:45:04.40 Then the natural fruit, 00:45:04.43\00:45:05.77 the natural response of that, of course, 00:45:05.80\00:45:07.44 is that we walk in obedience 00:45:07.47\00:45:09.00 to His Ten Commandment law of love. 00:45:09.04\00:45:11.17 Amen. Thank you so much, Ryan. 00:45:11.21\00:45:13.38 I love the illustration of the mirror. 00:45:13.41\00:45:15.28 That's powerful and it brings it to life 00:45:15.31\00:45:17.18 and it makes it so clear 00:45:17.21\00:45:18.95 the role, the purpose of the law 00:45:18.98\00:45:21.62 in showing our sin. 00:45:21.65\00:45:22.98 Very good. 00:45:23.02\00:45:24.35 On Thursday we have the title on Thursday is 00:45:24.39\00:45:26.65 Promises, Promises. 00:45:26.69\00:45:28.72 So we look at first 00:45:28.76\00:45:30.09 Israel's acceptance of the covenant, 00:45:30.13\00:45:31.66 and Shelley referenced it. 00:45:31.69\00:45:33.03 And I think Ryan might have mentioned something too. 00:45:33.06\00:45:35.33 We have Exodus 19:7-8, 00:45:35.36\00:45:37.67 you find the same phrase 00:45:37.70\00:45:39.73 that the children of Israel said in Exodus 24:3 00:45:39.77\00:45:43.57 at the end of the law given, of course, in Exodus 20, 00:45:43.61\00:45:47.58 and then the end of the covenant there 00:45:47.61\00:45:49.04 in Exodus 24, 00:45:49.08\00:45:50.41 but it's the same words. 00:45:50.45\00:45:51.78 Exodus 19:7-8, 00:45:51.81\00:45:53.25 "So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, 00:45:53.28\00:45:55.58 and laid before them all the words 00:45:55.62\00:45:57.49 which the Lord commanded them. 00:45:57.52\00:45:59.65 Then all the people answered together and said, 00:45:59.69\00:46:02.62 'All that the Lord has spoken we will do.' 00:46:02.66\00:46:07.53 So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord.'" 00:46:07.56\00:46:11.13 So was obedience a condition of the covenant? 00:46:11.17\00:46:15.14 We've established very clearly 00:46:15.17\00:46:16.50 that obedience is a condition of the covenant. 00:46:16.54\00:46:19.67 Ryan already read Exodus 19:5, just a couple of verses before. 00:46:19.71\00:46:23.75 If they obey God's voice and keep the covenant, 00:46:23.78\00:46:27.42 then they will remain and be in covenant with Him. 00:46:27.45\00:46:31.29 It is a covenant of salvation. 00:46:31.32\00:46:33.25 The problem was not their attempt to obey 00:46:33.29\00:46:36.56 because the covenant demanded obedience. 00:46:36.59\00:46:38.76 The problem was the kind of obedience 00:46:38.79\00:46:41.56 that they sought to bring. 00:46:41.60\00:46:44.60 The obedience they sought to bring 00:46:44.63\00:46:46.00 is really not obedience at all. 00:46:46.03\00:46:48.20 Obedience is a result of salvation. 00:46:48.24\00:46:51.97 Obedience is not the means of salvation. 00:46:52.01\00:46:56.38 They didn't obey to be saved, they obeyed or were to obey, 00:46:56.41\00:47:01.28 because they were in that saving walk, 00:47:01.32\00:47:04.82 that covenant relationship with God. 00:47:04.85\00:47:07.89 It reminds me, 00:47:07.92\00:47:09.26 this is a marriage illustration. 00:47:09.29\00:47:12.13 I like soggy bread, that's me. 00:47:12.16\00:47:14.66 So when I eat soup, I dip my bread in the soup, 00:47:14.70\00:47:18.33 I dip my crackers in the soup. 00:47:18.37\00:47:20.10 Greg is opposite me. 00:47:20.14\00:47:21.74 So he likes his toast very dry, hard. 00:47:21.77\00:47:25.67 That's how he likes it. 00:47:25.71\00:47:27.04 He would never dip anything in soup, 00:47:27.08\00:47:28.41 because it would make it soggy. 00:47:28.44\00:47:30.15 So he likes his toast so dry 00:47:30.18\00:47:32.31 that when you toast it in the toaster, 00:47:32.35\00:47:34.08 and then you pull it out and say, 00:47:34.12\00:47:35.45 I'd be ready when we first got married 00:47:35.48\00:47:36.99 to put the toast on the plate. 00:47:37.02\00:47:39.35 And what happens to the side of the toast 00:47:39.39\00:47:41.06 that's on the plate when it's warm, 00:47:41.09\00:47:43.09 it becomes soft. 00:47:43.12\00:47:44.99 So I learned when we were first married, 00:47:45.03\00:47:47.60 leave the toast in the toaster 00:47:47.63\00:47:49.06 for a few minutes until it cools off a bit. 00:47:49.10\00:47:51.23 And then you can put it on the plate 00:47:51.27\00:47:52.63 because Greg would be like, my toast is soft, 00:47:52.67\00:47:54.77 my toast becomes soggy after it's toasted. 00:47:54.80\00:47:57.97 Now let me tell you, I do not do that. 00:47:58.01\00:48:00.78 So every morning, if we have toast for breakfast, 00:48:00.81\00:48:02.88 I make sure I put the toast in the toaster 00:48:02.91\00:48:04.28 before he's going to eat 00:48:04.31\00:48:05.65 because this way it has time to cool 00:48:05.68\00:48:07.02 and that way the toast is now soft. 00:48:07.05\00:48:08.72 Now I do that not because I have to. 00:48:08.75\00:48:11.25 Greg doesn't say, make sure my toast is nice and hard. 00:48:11.29\00:48:14.52 He doesn't say that. 00:48:14.56\00:48:15.89 I do it, why? 00:48:15.92\00:48:17.26 Because I love him. 00:48:17.29\00:48:19.09 And because I know 00:48:19.13\00:48:21.06 that's his favorite way to eat toast 00:48:21.10\00:48:23.67 is crunchy. 00:48:23.70\00:48:25.83 What were the mistakes 00:48:25.87\00:48:27.20 that the children of Israel made? 00:48:27.24\00:48:29.67 Their first mistake was 00:48:29.70\00:48:31.04 thinking that they could obey the law 00:48:31.07\00:48:32.67 in their own strength. 00:48:32.71\00:48:34.08 When they said all that the Lord has said we will do. 00:48:34.11\00:48:37.71 They thought they did it in their own strength. 00:48:37.75\00:48:39.81 Their second mistake was seeking obedience 00:48:39.85\00:48:42.95 apart from faith. 00:48:42.98\00:48:44.82 Turn with me to Romans, Romans 9:30-32. 00:48:44.85\00:48:49.49 They sought obedience apart from faith 00:48:49.52\00:48:53.66 thinking they could separate the two. 00:48:53.70\00:48:55.56 Romans 9:30, 00:48:55.60\00:48:57.07 "What shall we say then? 00:48:57.10\00:48:58.43 That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, 00:48:58.47\00:49:01.70 have attained to righteousness, 00:49:01.74\00:49:03.44 even the righteousness of faith, 00:49:03.47\00:49:06.01 but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, 00:49:06.04\00:49:10.71 has not attained to the law of righteousness. 00:49:10.75\00:49:13.85 Why? 00:49:13.88\00:49:15.22 Because they did not seek it by faith, 00:49:15.25\00:49:17.79 but as it were, by the works of the law." 00:49:17.82\00:49:20.19 Israel sought to obey the law in their own strength. 00:49:20.22\00:49:22.62 Israel sought to obey it apart from faith. 00:49:22.66\00:49:27.20 Israel also stumbled at Jesus. 00:49:27.23\00:49:30.77 You look at the very next phrase, 00:49:30.80\00:49:32.83 we're still in Romans 9:32. 00:49:32.87\00:49:34.20 It keeps going. 00:49:34.24\00:49:35.57 It says, "They stumbled at," what? 00:49:35.60\00:49:37.11 "That stumbling stone. 00:49:37.14\00:49:39.01 As it is written: 00:49:39.04\00:49:40.38 'Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone 00:49:40.41\00:49:42.88 and rock of offense, 00:49:42.91\00:49:44.48 and whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." 00:49:44.51\00:49:49.58 How do we stumble at Jesus? 00:49:49.62\00:49:52.55 We stumble at Jesus 00:49:52.59\00:49:53.92 when we refuse to acknowledge Him 00:49:53.96\00:49:56.12 as Lord of our lives. 00:49:56.16\00:49:57.53 We stumble at Jesus when we refuse to recognize 00:49:57.56\00:50:00.43 His grace in our lives. 00:50:00.46\00:50:02.93 We stumble at Jesus when we refuse to... 00:50:02.96\00:50:06.40 when we seek to obey by ourselves. 00:50:06.43\00:50:10.21 We stumble at Jesus, 00:50:10.24\00:50:11.57 when we seek to be good enough for God. 00:50:11.61\00:50:13.61 We stumble at Jesus 00:50:13.64\00:50:14.98 when we seek to measure ourselves 00:50:15.01\00:50:17.48 by the supposed goodness of others. 00:50:17.51\00:50:20.05 It reminds me of Galatians 5. 00:50:20.08\00:50:21.88 Paul says in Galatians 5:4, 00:50:21.92\00:50:24.22 "You have become estranged or separated from Christ, 00:50:24.25\00:50:29.22 you who attempt to be justified by law, 00:50:29.26\00:50:32.83 you have fallen from grace." 00:50:32.86\00:50:35.90 You mean, I can try and think I'm being a good Christian, 00:50:35.93\00:50:40.04 I can think I'm doing the promises 00:50:40.07\00:50:42.27 that the children of Israel said, 00:50:42.30\00:50:44.11 "Oh, yes, God, I want to walk in obedience." 00:50:44.14\00:50:47.58 And yet if I do it apart from Christ, 00:50:47.61\00:50:50.01 I am separating myself from Him. 00:50:50.05\00:50:53.58 They also, the children of Israel 00:50:53.62\00:50:55.82 refused to surrender to God. 00:50:55.85\00:50:57.59 The next chapter, Romans 10:3, 00:50:57.62\00:51:00.39 "For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, 00:51:00.42\00:51:03.63 and seeking to establish their own righteousness, 00:51:03.66\00:51:06.19 have not submitted to the righteousness of God." 00:51:06.23\00:51:11.20 They refuse to allow Him access to even work in their lives. 00:51:11.23\00:51:16.71 You know, if you look at the difference, 00:51:16.74\00:51:18.11 this is to me the difference of works 00:51:18.14\00:51:20.41 versus grace. 00:51:20.44\00:51:21.88 Work say, what I do has bearing on who I am. 00:51:21.91\00:51:26.05 Grace says, who I am has bearing on what I do. 00:51:26.08\00:51:30.59 Work say, 00:51:30.62\00:51:31.95 actions are more important than motive. 00:51:31.99\00:51:34.92 Grace says, motive informs my actions. 00:51:34.96\00:51:39.36 Work say, 00:51:39.39\00:51:40.73 I am what other people perceive me to be. 00:51:40.76\00:51:43.87 Grace says, I am who God says I am. 00:51:43.90\00:51:48.04 We have a great need of divine grace. 00:51:48.07\00:51:50.21 Isaiah 64 says, 00:51:50.24\00:51:51.71 "All our righteousness is as filthy rags." 00:51:51.74\00:51:56.14 My nephew Caleb when he was two years old. 00:51:56.18\00:51:58.95 I'll never forget this. 00:51:58.98\00:52:00.32 We were visiting my sister 00:52:00.35\00:52:01.68 and he had a full blown temper tantrum on the floor, 00:52:01.72\00:52:04.35 heels kicking arms, flailing, 00:52:04.39\00:52:06.52 crying tears running down his face. 00:52:06.55\00:52:08.86 But in the midst of that 00:52:08.89\00:52:10.23 whole temper tantrum, he cried, 00:52:10.26\00:52:11.63 "Jesus, help me be good." 00:52:11.66\00:52:14.56 Jesus, he's kicking his feet. 00:52:14.60\00:52:16.63 Jesus, help me be good. 00:52:16.67\00:52:19.03 What is that? 00:52:19.07\00:52:20.40 That means even a child can understand 00:52:20.44\00:52:23.10 that our righteousness is as filthy rags, 00:52:23.14\00:52:27.48 and that we cannot obey the law 00:52:27.51\00:52:30.15 in our own grace or strength. 00:52:30.18\00:52:34.55 Legalism is works based salvation. 00:52:34.58\00:52:38.85 It's concerned with keeping the law of God 00:52:38.89\00:52:40.79 as an end in itself or as a means to salvation. 00:52:40.82\00:52:45.19 Legalism is Christ-less law keeping. 00:52:45.23\00:52:49.16 It is separating the law from the law giver. 00:52:49.20\00:52:51.63 It's not concerned with obedience to God 00:52:51.67\00:52:53.64 or honoring Christ. 00:52:53.67\00:52:55.00 It simply seeks to obey rules 00:52:55.04\00:52:57.51 devoid of any relationship. 00:52:57.54\00:53:01.18 Legalism is externally motivated, 00:53:01.21\00:53:03.61 it is externally driven. 00:53:03.65\00:53:05.75 It is concerned with external obedience 00:53:05.78\00:53:08.82 instead of an inward change. 00:53:08.85\00:53:11.42 Legalism is concerned about the letter of the law 00:53:11.45\00:53:13.86 while violating entirely the spirit of the law. 00:53:13.89\00:53:18.33 Legalism is adding our own rules 00:53:18.36\00:53:20.90 to the law of God 00:53:20.93\00:53:22.26 and beginning to treat those rules 00:53:22.30\00:53:23.67 as if they are divine. 00:53:23.70\00:53:26.13 The Pharisees did that. 00:53:26.17\00:53:27.50 Jesus said, 00:53:27.54\00:53:28.87 "In vain do they worship Me, 00:53:28.90\00:53:30.24 teaching as doctrines the commandments of men, 00:53:30.27\00:53:32.81 elevating them to the rule of the Divine." 00:53:32.84\00:53:35.68 Legalism is an attempt to gain favor with God 00:53:35.71\00:53:38.91 or impress fellow human beings by doing certain things 00:53:38.95\00:53:42.35 or maybe avoiding other things 00:53:42.38\00:53:44.95 without regard to the condition of our heart before God. 00:53:44.99\00:53:48.09 Legalism is rooted in pride. 00:53:48.12\00:53:51.09 If we look at grace, faith and obedience, 00:53:51.13\00:53:55.33 we are saved by grace through faith. 00:53:55.36\00:53:58.83 Pastor John already read Ephesians 2:8-9, 00:53:58.87\00:54:01.90 "For by grace we are saved through faith." 00:54:01.94\00:54:04.97 We also obey by grace through faith. 00:54:05.01\00:54:09.78 Romans 1:5, through whom? 00:54:09.81\00:54:12.21 "Through Jesus Christ, 00:54:12.25\00:54:13.95 we received grace and apostleship 00:54:13.98\00:54:16.65 for obedience to the faith or obedience of faith 00:54:16.69\00:54:21.46 among all nations for His name." 00:54:21.49\00:54:24.19 You see grace is not just clemency toward sin. 00:54:24.23\00:54:27.46 Grace is power over sin. 00:54:27.50\00:54:30.40 Grace is Christ in you the hope of glory. 00:54:30.43\00:54:34.60 Grace is a gift. 00:54:34.64\00:54:36.24 Salvation is a gift. 00:54:36.27\00:54:38.14 Faith is a gift. 00:54:38.17\00:54:40.34 Grace and faith, 00:54:40.38\00:54:41.71 I believe both of them are activated by our choice. 00:54:41.74\00:54:45.05 And grace, obedience, it comes from God. 00:54:45.08\00:54:48.48 I like that word, grace, obedience. 00:54:48.52\00:54:50.82 Connecting grace with obedience 00:54:50.85\00:54:53.56 because all obedience comes from grace. 00:54:53.59\00:54:56.02 So the promises of the children of Israel 00:54:56.06\00:54:58.03 make many times today. 00:54:58.06\00:55:00.56 We make the same promises. 00:55:00.60\00:55:02.06 Yes, God, I'm going to follow you. 00:55:02.10\00:55:03.80 Yes, God, I'm going to do what you say. 00:55:03.83\00:55:06.07 But it requires faith, it requires surrender, 00:55:06.10\00:55:09.50 it requires allowing the infilling spirit 00:55:09.54\00:55:12.37 to help you obey. 00:55:12.41\00:55:14.41 Amen. Amen. 00:55:14.44\00:55:16.04 Wonderful. Glory. 00:55:16.08\00:55:17.41 Well, every single day, 00:55:17.45\00:55:19.31 you could see that they could continue, 00:55:19.35\00:55:21.32 because it's a blessing. 00:55:21.35\00:55:23.35 The Sabbath School Panel is a blessing. 00:55:23.39\00:55:25.59 We want to give each panel member a time 00:55:25.62\00:55:28.39 to say something for your last comments. 00:55:28.42\00:55:30.73 Just a quick summary, three points of salvation. 00:55:30.76\00:55:34.43 We have been saved justification 00:55:34.46\00:55:37.60 from the penalty of sin. 00:55:37.63\00:55:39.60 We are being saved sanctification 00:55:39.63\00:55:41.87 from the power of sin. 00:55:41.90\00:55:43.91 We will be saved glorification from the presence of sin. 00:55:43.94\00:55:49.14 Amen and amen. 00:55:49.18\00:55:51.61 The Sinai Covenant 00:55:51.65\00:55:54.25 is found in Exodus 20:22 00:55:54.28\00:55:58.29 through Exodus 23:22. 00:55:58.32\00:56:01.26 It repeats the moral law. 00:56:01.29\00:56:03.16 God repeats His Ten Commandments, 00:56:03.19\00:56:04.73 that's the heart of it. 00:56:04.76\00:56:06.09 Its civil laws based on a government 00:56:06.13\00:56:10.97 of those instructions of loving the Ten Commandments. 00:56:11.00\00:56:14.64 And then there is the ceremonial law 00:56:14.67\00:56:17.81 to show that when you mess up 00:56:17.84\00:56:19.17 and transgress His law, He's got a remedy. 00:56:19.21\00:56:22.04 Amen. 00:56:22.08\00:56:23.41 I want to read something from Wednesday's lesson 00:56:23.45\00:56:24.85 which says, 00:56:24.88\00:56:26.38 basing their relationship with Him upon his salvation, 00:56:26.41\00:56:30.79 the Lord sought to elevate them that is Israel 00:56:30.82\00:56:33.66 to a spiritual, intellectual and moral level 00:56:33.69\00:56:36.89 that would make them 00:56:36.93\00:56:38.26 the wonder of the ancient world, 00:56:38.29\00:56:40.20 all for the purpose of using them 00:56:40.23\00:56:41.83 to preach the gospel to the nations. 00:56:41.86\00:56:44.40 All they had to do in response was obey. 00:56:44.43\00:56:47.64 So as we learn in Wednesday's lesson, 00:56:47.67\00:56:49.97 God wants us to obey, 00:56:50.01\00:56:51.34 but we first need to see our need of Him 00:56:51.37\00:56:53.34 before we even see the need to obey. 00:56:53.38\00:56:55.61 In this case, the law doesn't save us, 00:56:55.64\00:56:57.75 Christ saves us. 00:56:57.78\00:56:59.11 But when we obey Him, we're showing our faith in Him. 00:56:59.15\00:57:02.78 Amen. 00:57:02.82\00:57:04.15 I had Promises, Promises. 00:57:04.19\00:57:05.52 And we can try to make promises, 00:57:05.55\00:57:07.96 but the best thing is to base our faith 00:57:07.99\00:57:10.73 on the promises in the Word of God. 00:57:10.76\00:57:13.16 Amen and amen. 00:57:13.19\00:57:14.90 Well, we hope you've been blessed 00:57:14.93\00:57:16.56 during this lesson study. 00:57:16.60\00:57:18.70 I would like to leave you 00:57:18.73\00:57:20.07 with the words of Psalms 103:17-18, 00:57:20.10\00:57:24.57 notice this, 00:57:24.61\00:57:25.97 "But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting 00:57:26.01\00:57:31.88 on those who fear Him, 00:57:31.91\00:57:34.05 and His righteousness to children's children, 00:57:34.08\00:57:37.65 to such as keep His covenant, 00:57:37.69\00:57:40.22 and to those 00:57:40.26\00:57:41.69 who remember His commandments to do them." 00:57:41.72\00:57:45.03 So we encourage you to enter 00:57:45.06\00:57:46.76 into covenant relationship with God. 00:57:46.80\00:57:49.90 Great blessings are in story. 00:57:49.93\00:57:52.50 We invite you to tune in 00:57:52.53\00:57:54.00 for next week's lesson number eight, 00:57:54.04\00:57:56.64 Covenant Law. 00:57:56.67\00:57:58.01 We'll see you then. 00:57:58.04\00:57:59.44 Amen. 00:57:59.47\00:58:00.81
