Praise the Lord. 00:02:36.18\00:02:37.92 Again, we're talking about God's everlasting covenant. 00:02:37.95\00:02:41.12 And I'm going to read the memory text before we pray 00:02:41.16\00:02:44.56 and then we're going to pray and get right into this. 00:02:44.59\00:02:46.53 So I love this. 00:02:46.56\00:02:47.90 Genesis 17:7 says, 00:02:47.93\00:02:51.90 "And I will establish My covenant 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.54 between Me and you, 00:02:53.57\00:02:55.97 and your descendants after you in their generations, 00:02:56.00\00:02:59.91 for an everlasting covenant, 00:02:59.94\00:03:02.74 to be God to you, 00:03:02.78\00:03:04.35 and your descendants after you." 00:03:04.38\00:03:07.48 So Pastor John Lomacang, on that note, 00:03:07.52\00:03:09.15 why don't you have a prayer for us? 00:03:09.18\00:03:11.75 Gracious Father, loving Lord, 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.15 as we come this morning before the table of grace. 00:03:13.19\00:03:17.03 Father, we pray that You'll prepare for us a table 00:03:17.06\00:03:20.36 from which we can partake and know that 00:03:20.40\00:03:22.13 this bread has been imparted to us 00:03:22.16\00:03:25.03 to impart to others. 00:03:25.07\00:03:26.90 Give us wisdom, Lord, 00:03:26.94\00:03:28.27 synchronize our hearts and minds. 00:03:28.30\00:03:30.17 May Your Holy Spirit 00:03:30.21\00:03:31.91 pour through the funnel of our obedient hearts, 00:03:31.94\00:03:35.21 that those who are listening and those who are watching 00:03:35.24\00:03:37.91 may find the strength that they are in need of, 00:03:37.95\00:03:40.95 to walk in harmony with this covenant, 00:03:40.98\00:03:43.55 plus the production aspects of it. 00:03:43.59\00:03:45.52 And be all the glory and honor go to You alone. 00:03:45.55\00:03:47.46 We pray in Christ's name. 00:03:47.49\00:03:49.39 Amen. 00:03:49.42\00:03:50.76 Amen. Thank you, Brother. 00:03:50.79\00:03:52.49 You know, growing up in the Day family household 00:03:52.53\00:03:54.86 when I was a kid, my family, my parents taught us 00:03:54.90\00:03:59.30 that your word means something. 00:03:59.33\00:04:01.30 Honor your word. 00:04:01.34\00:04:02.67 Honor your agreements that you make with someone. 00:04:02.70\00:04:04.21 If you make a promise, then you honor that promise. 00:04:04.24\00:04:07.81 And as I'm reading that text 00:04:07.84\00:04:09.38 that we just read from Genesis 17:7 00:04:09.41\00:04:11.71 as God says, you know, 00:04:11.75\00:04:13.11 "To you and your descendants and to you in their generation, 00:04:13.15\00:04:16.05 for an everlasting covenant, 00:04:16.08\00:04:18.25 to be God to you 00:04:18.29\00:04:19.62 and your descendants after you.: 00:04:19.65\00:04:21.39 I love that the fact that we say that a lot, 00:04:21.42\00:04:23.83 it kind of rolls off the tongue easy, 00:04:23.86\00:04:25.19 everlasting covenant. 00:04:25.23\00:04:26.63 But when you really focus in on what that saying, 00:04:26.66\00:04:29.03 it's beautiful to consider that we serve an everlasting God 00:04:29.06\00:04:32.00 that He's saying, you know what? 00:04:32.03\00:04:33.37 Through thick and thin, 00:04:33.40\00:04:34.74 whatever it is that we're going through, 00:04:34.77\00:04:36.10 I'm there for you, I am your God. 00:04:36.14\00:04:37.64 And I'm going to honor My word. 00:04:37.67\00:04:39.14 I'm going to keep My word because that's who I am. 00:04:39.17\00:04:42.11 I'm an everlasting God. 00:04:42.14\00:04:43.48 And My covenant is not something 00:04:43.51\00:04:44.85 that just goes and stops, right? 00:04:44.88\00:04:46.75 Or comes to a certain point 00:04:46.78\00:04:48.12 and it just becomes null and void. 00:04:48.15\00:04:49.72 It is something that will last in as much as you stay with Me 00:04:49.75\00:04:53.36 and you are committed to Me. 00:04:53.39\00:04:54.72 I love the fact that we serve an almighty loving God 00:04:54.76\00:04:57.73 that is everlasting and His Word never fails. 00:04:57.76\00:05:01.00 I want to start with Sabbath afternoon's lesson 00:05:01.03\00:05:02.86 there was a, there was a beautiful 00:05:02.90\00:05:04.23 little couple of paragraphs here 00:05:04.27\00:05:06.43 that really I think warms us up and sets us up 00:05:06.47\00:05:08.77 for the study of this week. 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.27 I'm gonna read that now. 00:05:10.31\00:05:11.64 It says, 00:05:11.67\00:05:13.01 "How many remember distinctly in your childhood, 00:05:13.04\00:05:15.61 a sickness or a touch of pneumonia perhaps 00:05:15.64\00:05:18.48 that made us very sick with 00:05:18.51\00:05:20.35 the potential for some something even worse. 00:05:20.38\00:05:23.42 In the long feverish night 00:05:23.45\00:05:24.85 we would awaken from a half sleep 00:05:24.89\00:05:26.52 to see our mother or father 00:05:26.55\00:05:28.09 sitting in a chair beside our bed, 00:05:28.12\00:05:30.13 and the soft glow of the nightlight. 00:05:30.16\00:05:33.13 Just so in a figurative human sense 00:05:33.16\00:05:35.86 God set by the bedside of a sin sick world 00:05:35.90\00:05:39.97 as more whole darkness began to deepen 00:05:40.00\00:05:42.17 in the centuries after the flood. 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.87 For this reason, 00:05:44.91\00:05:46.24 He called out Abraham 00:05:46.27\00:05:47.61 and plan to establish through his faithful servant, 00:05:47.64\00:05:50.08 a people to whom 00:05:50.11\00:05:51.45 He could entrust a knowledge of Himself 00:05:51.48\00:05:53.78 and give salvation. 00:05:53.82\00:05:56.12 Therefore, God entered into a covenant with Abraham 00:05:56.15\00:06:00.82 and His posterity 00:06:00.86\00:06:02.19 that emphasized in more detail, 00:06:02.22\00:06:04.29 the divine plan to save humankind 00:06:04.33\00:06:06.70 from the results of sin. 00:06:06.73\00:06:08.80 The Lord was not going to leave his world unattended, 00:06:08.83\00:06:12.17 not with it in such dire need." 00:06:12.20\00:06:15.30 And so, I like the way that set that up, 00:06:15.34\00:06:16.91 because it sets us up for Sunday's lesson 00:06:16.94\00:06:18.81 which dives deep into the meaning 00:06:18.84\00:06:21.44 and the emphasis and importance 00:06:21.48\00:06:23.55 of the name of God 00:06:23.58\00:06:24.91 and how He introduced Himself to Abraham. 00:06:24.95\00:06:28.22 And I'm gonna go ahead and go to Genesis 15:1-7. 00:06:28.25\00:06:32.45 This is where God introduces the covenant to Abraham 00:06:32.49\00:06:36.46 and introduces Himself 00:06:36.49\00:06:37.86 and basically He shows to him says, 00:06:37.89\00:06:39.23 this is Me, this is what I'm all about. 00:06:39.26\00:06:41.16 This is who I am. 00:06:41.20\00:06:42.56 And I want you to know exactly 00:06:42.60\00:06:44.27 who it is that is seeking after you, Abraham, 00:06:44.30\00:06:46.70 and it's calling upon you. 00:06:46.74\00:06:48.14 So this is Genesis 15:1-7. 00:06:48.17\00:06:51.24 Notice what the Bible says, 00:06:51.27\00:06:53.74 "After these things 00:06:53.78\00:06:55.11 the word of the Lord came to Abram 00:06:55.14\00:06:56.48 in a vision, saying, 00:06:56.51\00:06:58.05 'Do not be afraid, Abram. 00:06:58.08\00:06:59.61 I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.' 00:06:59.65\00:07:04.32 But Abram said, 00:07:04.35\00:07:05.69 'Lord God, what will You give me, 00:07:05.72\00:07:07.56 seeing I go childless, 00:07:07.59\00:07:09.29 and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?' 00:07:09.32\00:07:12.86 Then Abram said, 00:07:12.89\00:07:14.23 'Look, You have given me no offspring, 00:07:14.26\00:07:15.90 indeed one born in my house is my heir!' 00:07:15.93\00:07:20.27 And behold, the word of the Lord 00:07:20.30\00:07:21.64 came to him, saying, 00:07:21.67\00:07:23.00 'This one shall not be your heir, 00:07:23.04\00:07:25.37 but one who will come from your own body 00:07:25.41\00:07:27.81 shall be your heir.' 00:07:27.84\00:07:30.18 Then He brought him outside and said, 00:07:30.21\00:07:31.98 'Look now toward heaven, 00:07:32.01\00:07:33.38 and count the stars 00:07:33.42\00:07:34.85 if you are able to number them.' 00:07:34.88\00:07:37.15 And He said to him, 00:07:37.19\00:07:39.52 'So shall your descendants be.'" 00:07:39.55\00:07:42.22 And he believed... I love this. 00:07:42.26\00:07:43.59 This is Genesis 15:6, he says, 00:07:43.63\00:07:46.16 "And he believed in the Lord, 00:07:46.19\00:07:48.76 and He accounted it to him for righteousness." 00:07:48.80\00:07:51.73 But our key verse is the next verse, 00:07:51.77\00:07:53.87 verse 7, it says, 00:07:53.90\00:07:55.44 "Then He said to him, 00:07:55.47\00:07:56.91 'I am the Lord, 00:07:56.94\00:07:58.27 who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, 00:07:58.31\00:08:01.44 to give you this land to inherit it.'" 00:08:01.48\00:08:05.38 So God basically identifies Himself here, 00:08:05.41\00:08:08.45 I am the Lord your God. 00:08:08.48\00:08:10.32 And, of course, the lesson brings out that names, 00:08:10.35\00:08:12.52 of course can sometimes be like trademarks, right? 00:08:12.55\00:08:15.96 They're often associated with certain traits 00:08:15.99\00:08:18.46 and characteristics. 00:08:18.49\00:08:19.83 For instance, if I say certain names like 00:08:19.86\00:08:21.20 I don't know, 00:08:21.23\00:08:22.56 Albert Einstein, right? 00:08:22.60\00:08:23.93 There's something that comes to our mind, 00:08:23.97\00:08:25.30 we have certain qualities, 00:08:25.33\00:08:26.67 certain traits and characteristics. 00:08:26.70\00:08:28.04 Another person, Martin Luther King Jr., 00:08:28.07\00:08:30.47 absolutely. 00:08:30.51\00:08:31.84 Hitler. 00:08:31.87\00:08:33.24 Okay, something comes to the mind, right? 00:08:33.27\00:08:35.54 Harriet Tubman. 00:08:35.58\00:08:36.91 These are all famous historical names, 00:08:36.95\00:08:38.58 Abraham Lincoln, right? 00:08:38.61\00:08:40.15 Something comes to mind. 00:08:40.18\00:08:41.52 Michael Jordan. 00:08:41.55\00:08:45.02 And then one more Ellen G. White. 00:08:45.05\00:08:48.39 Every one of these historical individuals 00:08:48.42\00:08:50.26 when you say their name, 00:08:50.29\00:08:51.63 it's not just a name, there are certain, 00:08:51.66\00:08:54.76 these names are associated with certain characteristics, 00:08:54.80\00:08:57.50 traits and ideals 00:08:57.53\00:08:58.87 that immediately come to your mind 00:08:58.90\00:09:00.24 when you hear that. 00:09:00.27\00:09:01.60 So during Bible times, 00:09:01.64\00:09:02.97 obviously people of the Near East 00:09:03.00\00:09:04.34 or the Middle East 00:09:04.37\00:09:05.71 attached great importance to the meaning of names. 00:09:05.74\00:09:08.54 In fact, the SDA Bible Commentary, 00:09:08.58\00:09:11.11 volume 1 has this to say. 00:09:11.15\00:09:12.51 This is volume 1, page 523 of the SDA Bible Commentary. 00:09:12.55\00:09:15.68 It says, 00:09:15.72\00:09:17.05 "The Hebrews always thought of a name 00:09:17.09\00:09:18.72 as indicating either the personal characteristics 00:09:18.75\00:09:21.66 of the one named 00:09:21.69\00:09:23.02 or the thoughts and emotions of the one giving the name 00:09:23.06\00:09:26.43 or attendant circumstances 00:09:26.46\00:09:28.30 at the time the name was given." 00:09:28.33\00:09:30.13 And so I think of certain names in Bible 00:09:30.17\00:09:31.67 like you know that famous one when you think of Jacob, right? 00:09:31.70\00:09:34.10 What was Jacob's name associated with? 00:09:34.14\00:09:36.04 Deceiver, supplanter, right? 00:09:36.07\00:09:37.54 So that was the horrible name to be given. 00:09:37.57\00:09:39.77 But that's what he was known before 00:09:39.81\00:09:41.14 God changed his name, 00:09:41.18\00:09:42.51 I think of Michael, right? 00:09:42.54\00:09:43.88 Michael is the one who is like God, 00:09:43.91\00:09:45.78 these names mean something. 00:09:45.81\00:09:47.25 Well, the same thing here is what the Sunday's lesson 00:09:47.28\00:09:50.15 is bringing about 00:09:50.19\00:09:51.52 that when God introduced Himself 00:09:51.55\00:09:53.25 even though it says in our English Bible, 00:09:53.29\00:09:55.72 for instance, you may have a King James 00:09:55.76\00:09:57.39 or New King James Bible in there 00:09:57.43\00:09:59.39 and then if you have a King James Bible, 00:09:59.43\00:10:00.90 it's gonna be all caps, L-O-R- D, 00:10:00.93\00:10:03.50 I am the LORD your God, right? 00:10:03.53\00:10:06.03 But in the original language, 00:10:06.07\00:10:07.40 they're bringing out that actually God's name, 00:10:07.44\00:10:09.90 He identifies himself, He actually gives a name. 00:10:09.94\00:10:12.44 I am Yahweh, who brought you out of her. 00:10:12.47\00:10:16.08 So He identified Himself. 00:10:16.11\00:10:17.98 And, of course, with that name comes a meaning, 00:10:18.01\00:10:20.22 with that name comes an identifying factor 00:10:20.25\00:10:22.82 or characteristics or ideals, 00:10:22.85\00:10:25.25 or certain traits that come along with that. 00:10:25.29\00:10:27.76 And it's interesting that that name Yahweh, 00:10:27.79\00:10:30.36 which we see in our Bible as Lord, 00:10:30.39\00:10:32.56 it appears more than 6828 times in the Old Testament alone, 00:10:32.59\00:10:38.07 which is powerful. 00:10:38.10\00:10:39.43 God wants us to know who He is. 00:10:39.47\00:10:40.84 He wants us to know that I am the Lord your God. 00:10:40.87\00:10:43.74 It also happens to be a name, 00:10:43.77\00:10:45.57 of course, shrouded in mystery. 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.58 Scholar suggests 00:10:47.61\00:10:48.94 it could be a form of the Hebrew verb. 00:10:48.98\00:10:51.08 I'm hoping I'm saying this correctly, 00:10:51.11\00:10:52.55 hayah. 00:10:52.58\00:10:53.98 It almost makes me want to... 00:10:54.02\00:10:55.98 I don't know, it just come to hayah. 00:10:56.02\00:10:57.49 All right, you just want to do some karate there. 00:10:57.52\00:11:00.62 But no, seriously, it's a real Hebrew word. 00:11:00.66\00:11:02.92 And this is what the scholars say 00:11:02.96\00:11:04.53 that it comes from the Hebrew verb hayah, 00:11:04.56\00:11:06.76 which means to be 00:11:06.80\00:11:08.13 in which case it also can mean get this, 00:11:08.16\00:11:10.67 the Eternal One, the existent one, 00:11:10.70\00:11:13.97 the self existent one, 00:11:14.00\00:11:16.04 the self sufficient one 00:11:16.07\00:11:17.84 or the one who lives eternally kind of like that 00:11:17.87\00:11:21.54 everlasting covenant, that eternal covenant. 00:11:21.58\00:11:24.28 He is an eternal God, 00:11:24.31\00:11:25.68 He is an eternally existent God. 00:11:25.71\00:11:28.32 And, of course, this is describing 00:11:28.35\00:11:30.09 the divine attributes of God, it's describing His character. 00:11:30.12\00:11:33.76 God is revealing to Abraham 00:11:33.79\00:11:35.46 and it's powerful if you think about this. 00:11:35.49\00:11:37.23 Abraham was in Ur. 00:11:37.26\00:11:38.59 Well, this is a region outside of Babylon. 00:11:38.63\00:11:41.00 So he would have been just shrouded 00:11:41.03\00:11:42.90 and just stooped in Babylonian culture. 00:11:42.93\00:11:45.30 So you're talking about, 00:11:45.33\00:11:46.67 he's living in the epicenter of a cultic practices 00:11:46.70\00:11:49.27 and pagan polytheistic culture, 00:11:49.30\00:11:51.77 where at every little turn, 00:11:51.81\00:11:53.14 somebody is worshipping some con kind of god, 00:11:53.17\00:11:55.28 whether it's, you know, the god of the wind, 00:11:55.31\00:11:56.64 or the god of the earth, the god of the grass, 00:11:56.68\00:11:58.05 or the god of the sea, or the god of gold and silver, 00:11:58.08\00:12:00.32 or whatever kind of gods they serve there. 00:12:00.35\00:12:02.38 And then this God shows up and says, Abraham, I'm Yahweh. 00:12:02.42\00:12:07.72 I'm the Eternal One. 00:12:07.76\00:12:09.52 I'm the self existent one, 00:12:09.56\00:12:11.13 and I'm calling you out, I want you to be My man. 00:12:11.16\00:12:13.53 I've got so many blessings for you. 00:12:13.56\00:12:15.76 I'm not like all these other false gods. 00:12:15.80\00:12:17.80 And so this got Abraham's attention. 00:12:17.83\00:12:19.93 You can imagine, it shook his world, right? 00:12:19.97\00:12:22.17 Because looking at all of these other false gods, 00:12:22.20\00:12:24.41 what have they done for anyone? 00:12:24.44\00:12:25.94 He's seen, he's observing, 00:12:25.97\00:12:27.31 and he's seeing all these other gods 00:12:27.34\00:12:28.68 that they're serving here in Babylonian culture. 00:12:28.71\00:12:30.55 They haven't done anything. 00:12:30.58\00:12:31.91 But here's a God that says, I'm going to do something, 00:12:31.95\00:12:33.95 I'm going to make things happen for you. 00:12:33.98\00:12:35.48 I'm going to bless you, 00:12:35.52\00:12:36.85 you're going to be a blessing to others. 00:12:36.89\00:12:38.22 And this is who I am, I am Yahweh, 00:12:38.25\00:12:40.56 I am the God of everything. 00:12:40.59\00:12:42.96 And so Abraham, the Bible says he believed it. 00:12:42.99\00:12:45.46 And it was accounted to him for righteousness. 00:12:45.49\00:12:47.40 He knew that there was something different 00:12:47.43\00:12:49.23 about this God. 00:12:49.26\00:12:50.60 In fact, in Exodus 3:14, that's what comes to my mind, 00:12:50.63\00:12:52.73 when God actually identified Himself 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.10 and what this Yahweh means. 00:12:55.14\00:12:56.94 When He identified Himself to Moses and said, 00:12:56.97\00:12:59.24 you know, when Moses asked Him, so when I go into Egypt, 00:12:59.27\00:13:01.68 what should I call you? 00:13:01.71\00:13:03.04 Who should I tell sent me? 00:13:03.08\00:13:04.41 He said, I am who I am. 00:13:04.45\00:13:07.78 That's so you tell me, why? 00:13:07.82\00:13:09.22 Because it means I rule over the past, present, and future. 00:13:09.25\00:13:13.05 I am the only true God. 00:13:13.09\00:13:15.06 That's who you tell has sent you, 00:13:15.09\00:13:16.96 the only true God. 00:13:16.99\00:13:18.53 So God wants Abraham to know His name, right? 00:13:18.56\00:13:21.76 Because that name reveals aspect of his, 00:13:21.80\00:13:24.33 aspects of His identity, 00:13:24.37\00:13:25.90 His personal nature and His character. 00:13:25.93\00:13:28.40 And from this knowledge, 00:13:28.44\00:13:30.07 we can learn to trust in His promises. 00:13:30.11\00:13:32.34 I'm thinking of Psalm 9:10, as we're doing this study here, 00:13:32.37\00:13:36.18 and those who know your name, this is Psalm 9:10, 00:13:36.21\00:13:39.45 "And those who know Your name 00:13:39.48\00:13:41.55 will put their trust in You, for You, 00:13:41.58\00:13:44.49 Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You." 00:13:44.52\00:13:47.46 Did God forsake Abraham? 00:13:47.49\00:13:48.92 Abraham found that out that God was not bluffing. 00:13:48.96\00:13:51.46 He wasn't just another false god, 00:13:51.49\00:13:53.19 like all the other false deities 00:13:53.23\00:13:54.96 that they served in Babylon. 00:13:55.00\00:13:56.46 He saw this personal God for who He was, 00:13:56.50\00:13:58.97 the mighty everlasting God. 00:13:59.00\00:14:01.10 Another one, Psalm 91:14, love this text, 00:14:01.14\00:14:04.04 "Because he has set his love upon Me, 00:14:04.07\00:14:07.04 therefore I will deliver him, I will set him on high, 00:14:07.08\00:14:10.81 because he has known My name." 00:14:10.85\00:14:14.48 God's name is much more than just the name, my friends. 00:14:14.52\00:14:17.52 God's name tells us the story of who He is. 00:14:17.55\00:14:20.52 He is the Almighty God, He is the everlasting God 00:14:20.56\00:14:23.79 who wants to bestow 00:14:23.83\00:14:25.16 that everlasting covenant upon us. 00:14:25.19\00:14:26.59 If only we would just surrender to Him now 00:14:26.63\00:14:28.93 and accept Him for who He truly is, 00:14:28.96\00:14:31.83 Yahweh, the Eternally existed One. 00:14:31.87\00:14:34.97 Amen. 00:14:35.00\00:14:36.34 Thank you so much, Ryan. 00:14:36.37\00:14:37.71 We're having church. 00:14:37.74\00:14:39.07 That's powerful. He has the truth. 00:14:39.11\00:14:40.44 I think maybe we could have you 00:14:40.48\00:14:41.81 be just a little less excited now. 00:14:41.84\00:14:43.18 I love that, 00:14:43.21\00:14:44.55 I love Ryan's energy and enthusiasm. 00:14:44.58\00:14:46.78 What an incredible setup to our lesson, 00:14:46.82\00:14:49.35 Yahweh, I love that. 00:14:49.38\00:14:50.72 I have another of the names of God. 00:14:50.75\00:14:53.05 I have El Shaddai. 00:14:53.09\00:14:54.69 Now, El just means God. 00:14:54.72\00:14:57.19 In the Semites it was their basic name 00:14:57.23\00:14:59.59 for referring to God, 00:14:59.63\00:15:01.46 and it means might or power, 00:15:01.50\00:15:03.87 and it occurs many 100 times throughout Hebrew. 00:15:03.90\00:15:07.97 But it's connected El Shaddai, God with Shaddai. 00:15:08.00\00:15:11.94 And we're going to study what that means. 00:15:11.97\00:15:13.31 Let's look first 00:15:13.34\00:15:14.68 at the first time that this word for God, 00:15:14.71\00:15:17.11 El Shaddai is used in the Bible. 00:15:17.15\00:15:19.28 This is Genesis 17:1. 00:15:19.31\00:15:21.82 This is talking to Abraham, Genesis 17:1, 00:15:21.85\00:15:26.29 "When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord, " 00:15:26.32\00:15:30.46 this is Yahweh that Ryan already addressed, 00:15:30.49\00:15:33.60 "appeared to Abram and said to him, 00:15:33.63\00:15:35.86 'I am Almighty God, 00:15:35.90\00:15:38.97 I am El Shaddai, 00:15:39.00\00:15:41.54 walk before Me and be blameless.'" 00:15:41.57\00:15:45.04 This covenant making story 00:15:45.07\00:15:46.78 is introduced by this appearance 00:15:46.81\00:15:49.11 of God right here. 00:15:49.14\00:15:50.48 And God repeats His promise to Abram. 00:15:50.51\00:15:53.01 Remember his promise first made in Genesis 12. 00:15:53.05\00:15:55.75 It was repeated in Genesis Chapter 15. 00:15:55.78\00:15:59.15 That promise of descendants, but yet he's still childless, 00:15:59.19\00:16:02.72 that promise of land 00:16:02.76\00:16:04.49 and yet he doesn't have a great deal, 00:16:04.53\00:16:07.20 that reaffirmation 00:16:07.23\00:16:09.43 God reaffirmed His covenant right here with Abram, 00:16:09.46\00:16:13.30 to both him and his descendants. 00:16:13.34\00:16:15.37 And he gave circumcision as a sign of that covenant. 00:16:15.40\00:16:20.54 Now, Abram was 75 years old, 00:16:20.58\00:16:22.48 which we would consider in today's society, 00:16:22.51\00:16:24.28 he's already getting older, 00:16:24.31\00:16:25.85 maybe even retirement age, 00:16:25.88\00:16:27.62 and yet at the age 75, 00:16:27.65\00:16:29.58 he is called to leave Ur of the Chaldees. 00:16:29.62\00:16:33.59 Now at this point, he's 99 years old, 00:16:33.62\00:16:36.89 and that promise that God gave to him. 00:16:36.93\00:16:40.20 He hasn't seen the fulfillment yet. 00:16:40.23\00:16:41.96 So God comes and says, 00:16:42.00\00:16:43.60 I am the Almighty one, 00:16:43.63\00:16:47.37 I can fulfill that promise. 00:16:47.40\00:16:50.77 Shaddai occurs 48 times the word Shaddai in Hebrew, 00:16:50.81\00:16:54.31 almost exclusively in the Book of Genesis, 00:16:54.34\00:16:56.75 and the Book of Job, 00:16:56.78\00:16:59.01 of course, the first time that occurs, 00:16:59.05\00:17:00.38 we just read that reference there. 00:17:00.42\00:17:02.08 And Shaddai comes, now we translate it 00:17:02.12\00:17:04.32 we you could say sanitize it in English in the Bible, 00:17:04.35\00:17:08.19 because we translate it God Almighty, 00:17:08.22\00:17:10.63 and clearly God is almighty, 00:17:10.66\00:17:13.06 but the original word Shaddai come from shad, 00:17:13.09\00:17:16.46 which literally means breast. 00:17:16.50\00:17:18.87 So you could say this means the mighty breast. 00:17:18.90\00:17:22.30 This is where we get that concept of God Almighty. 00:17:22.34\00:17:27.88 Remember, maybe two weeks ago, 00:17:27.91\00:17:29.64 I'm trying to remember 00:17:29.68\00:17:31.01 when it was a couple of weeks ago, 00:17:31.05\00:17:32.38 Pastor John, 00:17:32.41\00:17:33.75 I think it was Pastor John talked about, 00:17:33.78\00:17:35.15 we are made in the image of God, 00:17:35.18\00:17:37.72 male and female created in the image of God, 00:17:37.75\00:17:41.56 meaning that God has 00:17:41.59\00:17:43.69 you could say attributes, characteristics, 00:17:43.73\00:17:47.00 that would be both 00:17:47.03\00:17:48.36 what we would naturally identify 00:17:48.40\00:17:49.86 as masculine or feminine. 00:17:49.90\00:17:52.23 And in this case, 00:17:52.27\00:17:53.94 the mightiness of God implies power, 00:17:53.97\00:17:56.77 but not power of violence. 00:17:56.81\00:17:58.61 This is the power of bountifulness. 00:17:58.64\00:18:01.88 It suggests that God is the pourer-forth, 00:18:01.91\00:18:05.31 the shedder of blessings. 00:18:05.35\00:18:08.58 He is our El Shaddai, 00:18:08.62\00:18:11.05 in contrast with the weakness and the frailty of humanity. 00:18:11.09\00:18:15.19 So let's look at, you might say, 00:18:15.22\00:18:16.56 okay, so why do I care about that? 00:18:16.59\00:18:18.49 What does it matter 00:18:18.53\00:18:20.00 to know that God is our El Shaddai? 00:18:20.03\00:18:24.00 I think there are seven lessons, 00:18:24.03\00:18:25.87 seven reasons that I can see here. 00:18:25.90\00:18:28.20 You know, I was going there, Ryan. 00:18:28.24\00:18:29.87 So lesson number one, 00:18:29.90\00:18:31.87 El Shaddai gives me hope 00:18:31.91\00:18:34.51 in seemingly impossible situations. 00:18:34.54\00:18:37.85 That's what God did to Abraham. 00:18:37.88\00:18:40.15 He's 99 years old, 00:18:40.18\00:18:41.75 and he was given the promise years before, 00:18:41.78\00:18:45.15 and yet he and his wife 00:18:45.19\00:18:46.52 are way past the childbearing age, 00:18:46.55\00:18:48.32 especially his wife passed the time a woman 00:18:48.36\00:18:50.29 there's no way from a human perspective 00:18:50.33\00:18:53.43 that they could have children. 00:18:53.46\00:18:55.10 And yet God appears and He says, 00:18:55.13\00:18:56.87 I am a powerful God, 00:18:56.90\00:18:58.83 I am a bountiful God. 00:18:58.87\00:19:00.94 I am the God who can pour forth 00:19:00.97\00:19:04.01 and shed blessings upon you. 00:19:04.04\00:19:06.44 Whatever you need, 00:19:06.47\00:19:07.88 whatever you lack, 00:19:07.91\00:19:09.84 I will supply it. 00:19:09.88\00:19:12.25 So are you facing a seemingly impossible situation today? 00:19:12.28\00:19:16.45 Know that your God El Shaddai, 00:19:16.48\00:19:19.02 He specializes God Almighty 00:19:19.05\00:19:21.49 in taking a seemingly impossible situation 00:19:21.52\00:19:25.39 and turning it around. 00:19:25.43\00:19:27.40 The second lesson I see is that El Shaddai can adjust 00:19:27.43\00:19:31.20 how others view us. 00:19:31.23\00:19:34.00 Now this is an interesting one. 00:19:34.04\00:19:35.37 This is in Genesis Chapter 43. 00:19:35.40\00:19:36.97 Jump over to Genesis Chapter 43. 00:19:37.01\00:19:39.71 We see the reference to El Shaddai again. 00:19:39.74\00:19:42.11 Genesis 43:14. 00:19:42.14\00:19:44.98 Now to set up this story, 00:19:45.01\00:19:46.82 we see that Israel or these would Jacob 00:19:46.85\00:19:49.52 but of course his name was changed later to Israel. 00:19:49.55\00:19:52.69 He believes his son Joseph is dead, 00:19:52.72\00:19:54.82 although he was really sold into slavery in Egypt 00:19:54.86\00:19:57.79 and now he's the prime minister, 00:19:57.83\00:19:59.29 but Jacob doesn't know all that, 00:19:59.33\00:20:00.96 so he believes Joseph is dead. 00:20:01.00\00:20:02.93 There's a famine in the land and the people are starving, 00:20:02.96\00:20:06.53 his family is starving. 00:20:06.57\00:20:08.64 He sent them to Egypt for food. 00:20:08.67\00:20:11.01 This harsh taskmaster who turns out to be Joseph 00:20:11.04\00:20:15.98 kept Simeon in prison there. 00:20:16.01\00:20:18.71 The family comes back to daddy. 00:20:18.75\00:20:20.48 And then he says, 00:20:20.52\00:20:21.88 "Oh, but you need to go for food again." 00:20:21.92\00:20:23.62 And they said, 00:20:23.65\00:20:24.99 "We can't go because the overseer said, 00:20:25.02\00:20:26.82 'We got to bring our little brother Benjamin 00:20:26.86\00:20:28.59 with us this time.'" 00:20:28.62\00:20:31.16 And so this is where El Shaddai comes in. 00:20:31.19\00:20:33.70 We're in Genesis 43:14, 00:20:33.73\00:20:36.00 "And may God Almighty, that's El Shaddai, 00:20:36.03\00:20:39.73 give you mercy before the man 00:20:39.77\00:20:43.47 that he may release your older brother 00:20:43.51\00:20:45.77 and Benjamin. 00:20:45.81\00:20:47.31 If I am bereaved, I am bereaved." 00:20:47.34\00:20:51.05 He's praying God Almighty, 00:20:51.08\00:20:52.75 El Shaddai to change 00:20:52.78\00:20:55.22 how this overseer looks at the situation, 00:20:55.25\00:20:58.52 to give him mercy in his heart. 00:20:58.55\00:21:02.36 Lesson number three, 00:21:02.39\00:21:03.73 El Shaddai pours out blessings into our lives. 00:21:03.76\00:21:09.16 We see this in jump over a couple more chapters, 00:21:09.20\00:21:12.27 Genesis 49:25. 00:21:12.30\00:21:15.87 This is Israel's final blessing 00:21:15.90\00:21:17.71 at the end of his life to his sons. 00:21:17.74\00:21:19.71 And this is the blessing to Joseph in particular. 00:21:19.74\00:21:22.38 "By the God, that's El, 00:21:22.41\00:21:23.98 of your father who will help you 00:21:24.01\00:21:26.58 and by the Almighty, that's Shaddai, 00:21:26.61\00:21:30.15 who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, 00:21:30.19\00:21:32.85 blessings of the deep that lie beneath, 00:21:32.89\00:21:35.52 blessings of the breasts and of the womb." 00:21:35.56\00:21:38.29 El Shaddai pours out blessings into your life. 00:21:38.33\00:21:42.53 Are you walking in a place that seemingly impossible? 00:21:42.56\00:21:46.40 Do you need the people around you 00:21:46.43\00:21:48.70 to have an attitude adjustment or an eye adjustment 00:21:48.74\00:21:52.04 with how they're viewing that situation? 00:21:52.07\00:21:54.44 Do you need blessings poured out into your life? 00:21:54.48\00:21:57.48 Call on God as your El Shaddai. 00:21:57.51\00:22:01.05 Number four, El Shaddai is able to correct us. 00:22:01.08\00:22:04.89 This is a very interesting one to me. 00:22:04.92\00:22:06.52 Jump over to Job. 00:22:06.55\00:22:08.09 Job 5:17, 00:22:08.12\00:22:12.03 "Behold, happy is the man whom God, 00:22:12.06\00:22:14.13 that's El, corrects. 00:22:14.16\00:22:16.16 Therefore, do not despise 00:22:16.20\00:22:18.57 the chastening of the Almighty." 00:22:18.60\00:22:22.07 That is Shaddai. 00:22:22.10\00:22:23.97 Now, both parents correct clearly 00:22:24.01\00:22:26.81 when you grow up, 00:22:26.84\00:22:28.18 usually the father disciplines and the mother disciplines. 00:22:28.21\00:22:30.88 But if we look at the connotations from this, 00:22:30.91\00:22:34.25 to me this is specifically looking at 00:22:34.28\00:22:37.15 how would your mama correct you. 00:22:37.19\00:22:38.99 And I remember when I was growing up, 00:22:39.02\00:22:42.62 my mom had many ways to correct me. 00:22:42.66\00:22:45.13 But the one way that was most effective. 00:22:45.16\00:22:47.36 I remember she walked into the bedroom, 00:22:47.40\00:22:49.70 I knew I was gonna get whipped. 00:22:49.73\00:22:51.70 And she walked in and she knelt down, 00:22:51.73\00:22:53.64 I'll never forget this. 00:22:53.67\00:22:55.40 And she began to pray. 00:22:55.44\00:22:56.77 And she said, 00:22:56.81\00:22:58.14 "God, forgive me 00:22:58.17\00:22:59.51 for not being the mother to Jill 00:22:59.54\00:23:02.21 that I should have been." 00:23:02.24\00:23:03.95 And that broke my heart, 00:23:03.98\00:23:06.11 that mother's love for me, 00:23:06.15\00:23:08.58 that desire that 00:23:08.62\00:23:10.22 I would turn from my wicked ways 00:23:10.25\00:23:12.89 and I would follow God, 00:23:12.92\00:23:14.29 that brought me, wooed me back to the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:23:14.32\00:23:19.83 Next lesson is El Shaddai is all powerful. 00:23:19.86\00:23:24.07 Still in Job, Job 11:7, 00:23:24.10\00:23:27.50 "Can you search out the deep things of God?" 00:23:27.54\00:23:30.21 That's El. 00:23:30.24\00:23:31.57 "Can you find out the limits of the Almighty?" 00:23:31.61\00:23:34.51 The Shaddai. 00:23:34.54\00:23:35.88 There is no limit to the power of our God. 00:23:35.91\00:23:40.38 The next lesson number six, El Shaddai sustains us. 00:23:40.42\00:23:45.39 Job 33:4, 00:23:45.42\00:23:47.92 "The Spirit of God has made me 00:23:47.96\00:23:51.03 and the breath of the Almighty or Shaddai gives me life." 00:23:51.06\00:23:56.93 So God not only created us in the beginning, 00:23:56.97\00:24:00.20 but through the power of El Shaddai 00:24:00.24\00:24:02.77 we are sustained. 00:24:02.80\00:24:05.34 And finally, number seven, 00:24:05.37\00:24:06.81 El Shaddai always does the right thing. 00:24:06.84\00:24:09.98 Job 34:12, 00:24:10.01\00:24:12.55 "Surely God, that is El, will never do wickedly, 00:24:12.58\00:24:16.69 nor will the Almighty, that is Shaddai, 00:24:16.72\00:24:20.02 pervert justice." 00:24:20.06\00:24:21.79 El Shaddai is not swayed by other people's opinions, 00:24:21.82\00:24:24.59 by other people's emotions or outside pressure. 00:24:24.63\00:24:28.13 God will always do the right thing. 00:24:28.16\00:24:31.13 I'm so thankful no matter what we are facing 00:24:31.17\00:24:34.00 that we can call on Him as our El Shaddai. 00:24:34.04\00:24:37.64 Praise the Lord. I like that. 00:24:37.67\00:24:39.01 I love that story about your mama. 00:24:39.04\00:24:40.48 Mama Day she was a little bit different. 00:24:40.51\00:24:41.91 She said, Lord, please let this whipping 00:24:41.94\00:24:44.11 straighten my son out. 00:24:44.15\00:24:45.48 That's just how things were around my house. 00:24:45.51\00:24:47.58 And many times they did, so praise the Lord. 00:24:47.62\00:24:50.62 We're gonna take a short break. 00:24:50.65\00:24:51.99 We'll come right back. 00:24:52.02\00:24:53.36 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:59.96\00:25:01.30 a 3ABN Sabbath School for Tuesday's lesson. 00:25:34.76\00:25:36.13 All right. 00:25:36.16\00:25:37.50 Now we move over to Tuesday's lesson. 00:25:37.53\00:25:39.40 And the title for today's lesson is, 00:25:39.43\00:25:41.84 "From Abram to Abraham." 00:25:41.87\00:25:45.17 And so, this begins with Genesis Chapter 17. 00:25:45.21\00:25:47.88 We're going to read that again in verses 1 through 5. 00:25:47.91\00:25:51.28 Let's go. 00:25:51.31\00:25:52.65 "When Abram was ninety-nine years old, 00:25:52.68\00:25:55.22 the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, 00:25:55.25\00:25:58.19 'I am Almighty God, 00:25:58.22\00:26:00.46 walk before Me and be blameless. 00:26:00.49\00:26:02.79 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, 00:26:02.82\00:26:05.69 and will multiply you exceedingly.' 00:26:05.73\00:26:08.30 And Abram fell on his face, 00:26:08.33\00:26:09.66 and God talked with him, saying: 00:26:09.70\00:26:11.23 'As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, 00:26:11.27\00:26:14.60 and you shall be a father of many nations. 00:26:14.64\00:26:17.17 No longer shall your name be called Abram, 00:26:17.21\00:26:20.64 but your name shall be Abraham, 00:26:20.68\00:26:24.18 for I have made you a father of many nations.'" 00:26:24.21\00:26:29.38 So remember, Abraham, 00:26:29.42\00:26:30.89 or at this point, now he's 99 years old, 00:26:30.92\00:26:34.46 no children. 00:26:34.49\00:26:35.82 And now when he presents himself to people, 00:26:35.86\00:26:38.39 I heard a pastor say this, 00:26:38.43\00:26:39.76 I thought that's very interesting. 00:26:39.79\00:26:41.13 They said, what is your name? 00:26:41.16\00:26:42.53 My name is Abraham. 00:26:42.56\00:26:43.90 And they hear, 00:26:43.93\00:26:45.27 Oh you're a father of many nations. 00:26:45.30\00:26:46.80 How many children do you have? 00:26:46.84\00:26:49.94 Well, his answer would at that point be 00:26:49.97\00:26:51.67 well, I have one. 00:26:51.71\00:26:53.04 No. 00:26:53.07\00:26:54.41 But later, of course, 00:26:54.44\00:26:56.04 the promise of the Lord became true. 00:26:56.08\00:26:58.68 He was a father of many nations. 00:26:58.71\00:27:00.52 And in him all the families of the earth 00:27:00.55\00:27:02.62 have been blessed. 00:27:02.65\00:27:03.99 By the way, Abraham lived to 175 years old, 00:27:04.02\00:27:07.69 blessed of the Lord. 00:27:07.72\00:27:09.36 Now when you go to the scriptures, 00:27:09.39\00:27:11.59 you will notice that 00:27:11.63\00:27:12.96 many of the names of the people, 00:27:12.99\00:27:15.80 this is a common practice 00:27:15.83\00:27:17.87 among the Semitic tribes of ancient times. 00:27:17.90\00:27:20.50 The names were heavy laden with spiritual significance. 00:27:20.54\00:27:24.71 You see, even Adam and Eve 00:27:24.74\00:27:27.14 when, after Cain killed Abel, and Seth was born. 00:27:27.18\00:27:31.15 Eve said this in Genesis 3:25, 00:27:31.18\00:27:34.62 "And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son, 00:27:34.65\00:27:38.69 named him Seth, 00:27:38.72\00:27:40.06 for God has appointed another seed for me, " 00:27:40.09\00:27:44.39 instead of Abel whom Cain killed, 00:27:44.43\00:27:47.00 Seth means substituted. 00:27:47.03\00:27:49.96 And that was a blessing from the Lord 00:27:50.00\00:27:52.20 because they were comforted by the Lord 00:27:52.23\00:27:55.54 giving them another son Seth. 00:27:55.57\00:27:59.17 Now, it is interesting that the lesson brings out 00:27:59.21\00:28:02.48 some examples of name change. 00:28:02.51\00:28:05.68 You have Jacob, Jacob's name being changed, 00:28:05.71\00:28:08.65 Joseph's name being changed by the Egyptians, 00:28:08.68\00:28:12.29 Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 00:28:12.32\00:28:16.62 their names were changed. 00:28:16.66\00:28:19.26 If time permits, I will mention another one. 00:28:19.29\00:28:22.33 But I want to start 00:28:22.36\00:28:23.77 with the number three example in the lesson. 00:28:23.80\00:28:26.17 Let's go to Daniel Chapter 1, 00:28:26.20\00:28:28.44 and I'm going to read verse 6 and 7. 00:28:28.47\00:28:31.37 Notice what happens 00:28:31.41\00:28:32.74 because the people of Israel were taken captive to Babylon. 00:28:32.77\00:28:36.44 And some of the princes were taken into the court 00:28:36.48\00:28:40.92 to be a part 00:28:40.95\00:28:42.28 of the Nebuchadnezzar's people. 00:28:42.32\00:28:46.29 And this was a strategic move by Nebuchadnezzar 00:28:46.32\00:28:49.39 because these princes of the people 00:28:49.42\00:28:51.39 would help them be able to control the Jews 00:28:51.43\00:28:55.20 that were captive among them. 00:28:55.23\00:28:56.60 Now, notice what happens? 00:28:56.63\00:28:57.97 Daniel 1:6, 00:28:58.00\00:28:59.37 "Now from among those of the sons of Judah 00:28:59.40\00:29:02.80 were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 00:29:02.84\00:29:05.84 To them the chief of the eunuchs gave names: 00:29:05.87\00:29:09.24 he gave Daniel the name Belteshazzar, 00:29:09.28\00:29:12.98 to Hananiah, Shadrach, 00:29:13.01\00:29:15.35 to Mishael, Meshach, 00:29:15.38\00:29:17.32 and to Azariah, Abed-Nego." 00:29:17.35\00:29:20.69 Of course, you notice that their names were changed. 00:29:20.72\00:29:23.69 And it's interesting because 00:29:23.73\00:29:25.49 these Hebrews their names meant something special. 00:29:25.53\00:29:29.10 They had a spiritual significance. 00:29:29.13\00:29:31.17 The changing of the names was not for a good reason. 00:29:31.20\00:29:36.24 It was to in their life's experience in Babylon 00:29:36.27\00:29:41.74 so that they can identify with the gods of Babylon, 00:29:41.78\00:29:45.45 actually, the name Babylon 00:29:45.48\00:29:46.85 in the Babylonian language means 00:29:46.88\00:29:48.48 gate of the gods, 00:29:48.52\00:29:49.85 so many gods, they were pagans, 00:29:49.88\00:29:52.62 and they wanted these Jews not to have their names 00:29:52.65\00:29:56.83 having beautiful significance about the Almighty God 00:29:56.86\00:30:00.46 continually sounding 00:30:00.50\00:30:02.10 when you call Daniel. 00:30:02.13\00:30:03.47 Let's look at the name significance 00:30:03.50\00:30:05.23 of Daniel and his friends. 00:30:05.27\00:30:07.70 Daniel's name means a God of judgment 00:30:07.74\00:30:11.67 or God is my judge. 00:30:11.71\00:30:13.48 Hananiah signified the lord of grace, 00:30:13.51\00:30:16.04 or the Lord is gracious to me. 00:30:16.08\00:30:17.95 Michael or Mishael, 00:30:17.98\00:30:20.02 convey the sense that the Lord is the strength, 00:30:20.05\00:30:23.75 my strength. 00:30:23.79\00:30:25.39 Azariah is a compound of Azar and iah 00:30:25.42\00:30:28.69 implied the Lord is my help. 00:30:28.72\00:30:31.53 So their names being changed 00:30:31.56\00:30:34.13 was to lead them to forget who they were. 00:30:34.16\00:30:38.23 And so this, of course, 00:30:38.27\00:30:41.20 had they not stay close to the Lord, 00:30:41.24\00:30:43.51 that would have happened, 00:30:43.54\00:30:44.87 but they chose to be faithful 00:30:44.91\00:30:46.51 and these guys endured some terrible things. 00:30:46.54\00:30:50.01 I don't know how many of us after the statute was put up, 00:30:50.05\00:30:54.25 and the instrument sounded would have bowed 00:30:54.28\00:30:58.39 before that statue that Nebuchadnezzar set up, 00:30:58.42\00:31:01.22 but you have the three Hebrew worthies 00:31:01.26\00:31:03.22 being faithful to God until the end, 00:31:03.26\00:31:05.26 even after Nebuchadnezzar say, 00:31:05.29\00:31:07.40 "Hey, we're going to give you guys a second chance. 00:31:07.43\00:31:09.86 We're going to see if you're going to bow down, 00:31:09.90\00:31:11.57 and if you don't, you're going into the fiery furnace." 00:31:11.60\00:31:14.10 They said, 00:31:14.14\00:31:15.47 "The Lord will deliver us and if He does not, 00:31:15.50\00:31:17.31 we are not going to bow down." 00:31:17.34\00:31:19.81 So there they stayed, 00:31:19.84\00:31:21.64 they remain faithful to God, 00:31:21.68\00:31:23.11 you know, it's very important 00:31:23.14\00:31:24.75 to recognize that 00:31:24.78\00:31:26.11 your name means something connected to the Lord. 00:31:26.15\00:31:28.88 And so, I have good news for you, 00:31:28.92\00:31:31.65 and continue to listen, 00:31:31.69\00:31:33.02 and we'll see that in a moment. 00:31:33.05\00:31:35.19 See, as Christians, we must never forget, 00:31:35.22\00:31:37.79 not forget that we are pilgrims and strangers in this world. 00:31:37.83\00:31:42.60 I want to talk to you about Jacob, 00:31:42.63\00:31:44.50 because his name was changed for a good reason. 00:31:44.53\00:31:50.01 In Genesis 32:28, it says here, 00:31:50.04\00:31:54.51 "And he said your name 00:31:54.54\00:31:55.94 shall no longer be called Jacob, 00:31:55.98\00:31:57.68 but Israel, 00:31:57.71\00:31:59.05 for you have struggled 00:31:59.08\00:32:00.42 with God and with men and have prevailed." 00:32:00.45\00:32:04.35 And so here you have, Jacob's name being changed. 00:32:04.39\00:32:09.16 He wrestled with the angel during the whole night. 00:32:09.19\00:32:12.59 And he realized that 00:32:12.63\00:32:14.86 wait a minute, this is no common man. 00:32:14.90\00:32:17.17 And so he held on, 00:32:17.20\00:32:19.00 he held on 00:32:19.03\00:32:20.37 and he was blessed to have his name changed. 00:32:20.40\00:32:23.74 And I want to point out something interesting 00:32:23.77\00:32:26.94 because his brother said something interesting about him 00:32:26.98\00:32:30.75 in Genesis 27:34-36, 00:32:30.78\00:32:33.52 " When Esau heard the words of his father..." 00:32:33.55\00:32:35.92 See, Jacob had come in and stole the blessing 00:32:35.95\00:32:40.49 that he that he was supposed to receive. 00:32:40.52\00:32:42.69 "When Esau heard the words of his father, 00:32:42.72\00:32:44.29 he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, 00:32:44.33\00:32:47.26 and said to his father, 00:32:47.30\00:32:48.63 'Bless me, bless me also, O my father!' 00:32:48.66\00:32:50.80 But he said, 00:32:50.83\00:32:52.17 'Your brother came with deceit 00:32:52.20\00:32:54.14 and has taken away your blessing.' 00:32:54.17\00:32:56.34 And Esau said, 00:32:56.37\00:32:57.71 'Is he not rightly named Jacob? 00:32:57.74\00:33:01.28 For he has supplanted me these two times. 00:33:01.31\00:33:04.25 He took away my birthright, 00:33:04.28\00:33:06.11 and now look, he has taken away my blessing!' 00:33:06.15\00:33:08.95 And he said, 00:33:08.98\00:33:10.32 'Have you not reserved a blessing for me?' " 00:33:10.35\00:33:12.42 He was desirous to have the blessing 00:33:12.45\00:33:15.09 that he despised earlier in his life. 00:33:15.12\00:33:18.59 But Jacob's name was changed to Israel, 00:33:18.63\00:33:22.76 a wonderful change. 00:33:22.80\00:33:24.30 And so, I'm going to read to you 00:33:24.33\00:33:25.67 from Patriarchs and Prophets, page 198. 00:33:25.70\00:33:28.80 Notice here, 00:33:28.84\00:33:30.17 "The error that had led Jacob's sin 00:33:30.21\00:33:32.01 in obtaining the birthright by fraud 00:33:32.04\00:33:34.08 was now clearly set before him. 00:33:34.11\00:33:36.31 He had not trusted God's promises, 00:33:36.34\00:33:38.51 but had sought by his own efforts 00:33:38.55\00:33:40.28 to bring about that 00:33:40.32\00:33:41.65 which God would have accomplished 00:33:41.68\00:33:43.18 in His own time and way. 00:33:43.22\00:33:45.85 As an evidence that he had been forgiven, 00:33:45.89\00:33:47.72 his name was changed 00:33:47.76\00:33:49.39 from one that was a reminder of his sin, 00:33:49.42\00:33:51.83 to one that commemorated his victory. 00:33:51.86\00:33:54.56 'Thy name,' said the Angel, 00:33:54.60\00:33:56.13 'shall be called no more Jacob, 00:33:56.16\00:33:57.87 the supplanter, but Israel: 00:33:57.90\00:34:00.40 for as a prince 00:34:00.44\00:34:01.90 hast thou power with God and with men, 00:34:01.94\00:34:04.14 and hast prevailed.'" 00:34:04.17\00:34:05.84 Jacob had received the blessing for which his soul had longed. 00:34:05.87\00:34:10.18 His sin as a supplanter and deceiver 00:34:10.21\00:34:13.15 had been pardoned. 00:34:13.18\00:34:15.32 The crisis in his life was past. 00:34:15.35\00:34:17.45 Doubt and perplexity, 00:34:17.49\00:34:21.69 and remorse had embittered his existence, 00:34:21.72\00:34:24.03 but now all was changed, 00:34:24.06\00:34:25.89 and sweet was the peace of reconciliation with God. 00:34:25.93\00:34:29.60 Jacob no longer feared to meet his brother. 00:34:29.63\00:34:32.60 God, who had forgiven his sin, 00:34:32.63\00:34:34.87 could move the heart of Esau 00:34:34.90\00:34:36.60 also to accept his humiliation and repentance." 00:34:36.64\00:34:40.44 Praise the Lord. 00:34:40.48\00:34:41.81 His name was changed 00:34:41.84\00:34:43.18 from something negative to something positive. 00:34:43.21\00:34:46.05 And the good news I have for you, 00:34:46.08\00:34:47.72 I don't know what kind of name you have, 00:34:47.75\00:34:49.38 whether you like it or not. 00:34:49.42\00:34:50.85 And I heard some horrible name 00:34:50.89\00:34:53.66 that some father gave to his daughters. 00:34:53.69\00:34:56.22 They had three daughters. 00:34:56.26\00:34:57.59 He called them yesterday, today and tomorrow. 00:34:57.63\00:34:59.19 I don't know what in the world 00:34:59.23\00:35:00.56 got into the minds of these parents. 00:35:00.60\00:35:02.26 But I don't know 00:35:02.30\00:35:03.63 if you've been called something else 00:35:03.67\00:35:05.70 that you didn't like by your peers. 00:35:05.73\00:35:07.87 But God is going to give us a new name. 00:35:07.90\00:35:11.57 Bought by us through Jesus Christ, 00:35:11.61\00:35:14.31 He paid the price 00:35:14.34\00:35:15.68 to be able to not only redeem us 00:35:15.71\00:35:17.18 to call us, call us His children 00:35:17.21\00:35:19.08 and give us an inheritance, 00:35:19.11\00:35:22.05 but to have our names changed, 00:35:22.08\00:35:24.49 because God loves us, wants the best for us. 00:35:24.52\00:35:27.59 Abraham's name was changed 00:35:27.62\00:35:29.09 so that he could identify 00:35:29.12\00:35:30.83 with the promises that God had made to him. 00:35:30.86\00:35:34.30 Amen and amen. Thank you. 00:35:34.33\00:35:36.23 This has been such a lovely study. 00:35:36.26\00:35:38.33 Wednesday's lesson is "Covenant Stages." 00:35:38.37\00:35:42.70 We've already mentioned how God's covenant 00:35:42.74\00:35:45.77 is an everlasting covenant, 00:35:45.81\00:35:47.81 one that was made before 00:35:47.84\00:35:49.18 He returned to began the covenant of redemption. 00:35:49.21\00:35:51.91 And God is constantly, progressively unfolding this, 00:35:51.95\00:35:56.65 but even within the cabinet of Abraham, he does. 00:35:56.69\00:35:59.59 So the first, 00:35:59.62\00:36:00.96 there's three progressive stages, 00:36:00.99\00:36:02.96 as God will see that 00:36:02.99\00:36:05.29 He approaches Abraham each time, 00:36:05.33\00:36:08.40 He gives him a command and a promise. 00:36:08.43\00:36:10.17 So let's look at the first stage. 00:36:10.20\00:36:12.10 Genesis 12:1-3, 00:36:12.13\00:36:15.40 "Now the Lord had said to Abram: 00:36:15.44\00:36:17.27 'Get out of your country, 00:36:17.31\00:36:18.64 from your family, from your father's house, 00:36:18.67\00:36:20.28 to a land that I will show you. 00:36:20.31\00:36:22.14 I will make you a great nation, 00:36:22.18\00:36:24.81 I will bless you and make your name great, 00:36:24.85\00:36:27.78 and you shall be a blessing. 00:36:27.82\00:36:30.19 I will bless those who bless you, 00:36:30.22\00:36:32.25 I will curse him who curses you, 00:36:32.29\00:36:34.72 and in all the families of the earth, 00:36:34.76\00:36:38.09 you and all the families of the earth 00:36:38.13\00:36:40.83 will be blessed through you." 00:36:40.86\00:36:42.36 And then in verse 7, he says, 00:36:42.40\00:36:44.83 "The Lord appeared to Abram and said, 00:36:44.87\00:36:46.30 'To your descendants I will give this land.'" 00:36:46.33\00:36:51.41 And I will, I will, I will. 00:36:51.44\00:36:54.41 This is God's covenant, 00:36:54.44\00:36:57.21 Abraham's 75 years old, 00:36:57.25\00:36:59.48 living in a pagan society reared by pagan parents. 00:36:59.51\00:37:05.59 And we know that because Joshua 24:2, it says, 00:37:05.62\00:37:09.12 "To rob, that's his father, had served false gods." 00:37:09.16\00:37:14.20 So here is Abraham, 00:37:14.23\00:37:15.80 God's calling him 00:37:15.83\00:37:17.17 into a new relationship with Him. 00:37:17.20\00:37:19.63 And He says, 00:37:19.67\00:37:21.00 "Leave everything familiar behind you." 00:37:21.04\00:37:23.00 He's living in a town that's a seaport, 00:37:23.04\00:37:25.61 God's calling him 00:37:25.64\00:37:27.08 to transition to living the life of a nomad. 00:37:27.11\00:37:31.21 This is an incredible example of faith. 00:37:31.25\00:37:35.35 And 25 years later, he's finally given this sense. 00:37:35.38\00:37:40.19 So God approaches Abraham 00:37:40.22\00:37:43.32 to be the first special covenant bear, 00:37:43.36\00:37:49.26 if you will, 00:37:49.30\00:37:50.63 the one who is going to be the first major figure 00:37:50.67\00:37:52.83 of the God's covenant of grace. 00:37:52.87\00:37:55.60 And he does ask, he gives him a command, 00:37:55.64\00:37:59.77 and it's one that involves total trust in God. 00:37:59.81\00:38:03.24 I don't know that I'd be that great. 00:38:03.28\00:38:05.81 But Hebrews 11 says, 00:38:05.85\00:38:07.32 "It was by faith, 00:38:07.35\00:38:08.95 Abraham went out 00:38:08.98\00:38:10.32 not knowing where he was going." 00:38:10.35\00:38:12.69 But the promise was not only, 00:38:12.72\00:38:15.02 even though it was specifically made to Abraham, 00:38:15.06\00:38:17.86 it was ultimately a promise 00:38:17.89\00:38:19.73 that includes all of the whole human race. 00:38:19.76\00:38:24.10 We see in Galatians 3, Paul's writing about this, 00:38:24.13\00:38:28.30 verses 6 through 9, Abraham believe God, 00:38:28.34\00:38:31.81 it was accounted to him for righteousness. 00:38:31.84\00:38:35.08 Somebody asked me once, 00:38:35.11\00:38:36.44 "Do you believe in righteousness by faith?" 00:38:36.48\00:38:38.25 Let me tell you, 00:38:38.28\00:38:39.61 there is no righteousness except by faith. 00:38:39.65\00:38:41.88 Righteousness by faith 00:38:41.92\00:38:43.25 is the only thing that there is with God. 00:38:43.28\00:38:46.45 And he says, 00:38:46.49\00:38:47.82 "Therefore know that only those who are of faith," 00:38:47.86\00:38:51.66 this is Paul writing in Galatians 3, 00:38:51.69\00:38:54.43 "Only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham." 00:38:54.46\00:38:59.83 And the scripture we're seeing that 00:38:59.87\00:39:01.20 God would justify with Gentiles by faith, 00:39:01.24\00:39:05.84 preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, 00:39:05.87\00:39:09.31 in you, all the nations of the earth will be blessed. 00:39:09.34\00:39:15.18 So Paul concludes, Galatians, 3:9, 00:39:15.22\00:39:19.15 "So then those who are of faith 00:39:19.19\00:39:22.99 are blessed with believing Abraham." 00:39:23.02\00:39:25.69 Woo, woo! That's the first stage. 00:39:25.73\00:39:27.80 Now this is the exciting part. 00:39:27.83\00:39:29.76 God comes back on the second stage. 00:39:29.80\00:39:32.57 Again, there's an approach command and a promise. 00:39:32.60\00:39:35.64 Genesis 15:5-18. 00:39:35.67\00:39:38.47 God comes to him, 00:39:38.51\00:39:39.84 He brings Abraham outside and He says, 00:39:39.87\00:39:42.24 "Look now toward the heaven, 00:39:42.28\00:39:43.95 count the stars if you're able to number them, 00:39:43.98\00:39:47.02 so shall your descendants be." 00:39:47.05\00:39:51.35 And it says in verse 6, 00:39:51.39\00:39:52.79 "He believed in the Lord, 00:39:52.82\00:39:55.46 and He God accounted it to him as righteousness. 00:39:55.49\00:40:01.43 The covenant, the everlasting covenant 00:40:01.46\00:40:05.83 has always been righteousness by faith, 00:40:05.87\00:40:09.67 justified by faith. 00:40:09.70\00:40:11.97 So, then he says in verse 7, God says to him, 00:40:12.01\00:40:16.08 "I am the Lord who brought you out of her 00:40:16.11\00:40:18.31 and out of the Chaldeans, 00:40:18.35\00:40:19.98 to give you this land to inherit it." 00:40:20.02\00:40:23.05 So He promises him the land. 00:40:23.08\00:40:25.05 And you know, then what happens? 00:40:25.09\00:40:26.99 Abraham makes a genuine request for assurance. 00:40:27.02\00:40:29.79 He says, 00:40:29.82\00:40:31.16 "Lord, how shall I know I will inherit it." 00:40:31.19\00:40:33.60 So what God does is He tells him, 00:40:33.63\00:40:35.93 get a heifer, a goat and the ram, 00:40:35.96\00:40:38.83 cut them in half, lay them with a path, 00:40:38.87\00:40:41.20 whether it's half on one side, half on the other, 00:40:41.24\00:40:43.87 and a path in between. 00:40:43.91\00:40:45.51 And then he tells them 00:40:45.54\00:40:46.88 to get a turtledove and a pigeon 00:40:46.91\00:40:48.34 that they killed, 00:40:48.38\00:40:49.88 but they're not to be divided. 00:40:49.91\00:40:52.11 So Abraham obeys, 00:40:52.15\00:40:54.05 he cuts these animals asunder, 00:40:54.08\00:40:56.38 lays them this way. 00:40:56.42\00:40:58.15 Now, you know, in the ancient days, 00:40:58.19\00:41:03.29 when man would cut a covenant with man, 00:41:03.32\00:41:06.46 he make a covenant, 00:41:06.49\00:41:07.83 they call it cutting a covenant, 00:41:07.86\00:41:09.20 this is what they did. 00:41:09.23\00:41:11.63 And what would happen is, 00:41:11.67\00:41:13.47 then each man would walk through the path. 00:41:13.50\00:41:18.87 And they are saying, basically, 00:41:18.91\00:41:20.71 as they're doing this, taking this covenant, 00:41:20.74\00:41:23.28 so let it be done to me, 00:41:23.31\00:41:24.68 let me be cut in half if I break this covenant, 00:41:24.71\00:41:27.08 but let's watch this. 00:41:27.12\00:41:29.38 Because what happens after Abraham obeys? 00:41:29.42\00:41:33.86 God puts Abraham in a deep sleep, 00:41:33.89\00:41:37.93 just like He put, 00:41:37.96\00:41:39.39 when He put Adam in a deep sleep, 00:41:39.43\00:41:43.37 when He was going to create Eve. 00:41:43.40\00:41:45.37 Now get this, while he's in the deep sleep, 00:41:45.40\00:41:51.64 God's gonna walk through this. 00:41:51.67\00:41:54.04 Abraham never walks through this, 00:41:54.08\00:41:56.68 because there's only one person making the promises, 00:41:56.71\00:42:00.38 Abraham did. 00:42:00.42\00:42:01.85 It didn't involve any promise on Abraham's part. 00:42:01.88\00:42:06.02 It was God's promises. 00:42:06.05\00:42:08.86 So God is going to walk through this, 00:42:08.89\00:42:11.69 and He talks to His sleeping prophet, 00:42:11.73\00:42:15.86 telling him his descendants are going to be, 00:42:15.90\00:42:17.90 you know, 400 years, then this land that were there, 00:42:17.93\00:42:21.40 they're going to be afflicted, 00:42:21.44\00:42:22.77 and there'll be strangers in the land. 00:42:22.80\00:42:25.61 And then He promises He'll judge Egypt. 00:42:25.64\00:42:27.94 So He's talking to Abraham, it's from verses 13 to 21, 00:42:27.98\00:42:31.71 Abraham's hearing it in a vision 00:42:31.75\00:42:34.15 as he sleeps. 00:42:34.18\00:42:35.82 But the Abrahamic covenant, 00:42:35.85\00:42:38.55 it's interesting to me that 00:42:38.59\00:42:39.92 God, maybe it's because 00:42:39.95\00:42:41.89 this is the way people cut covenants, 00:42:41.92\00:42:43.89 God wanted to prove that it was a covenant, 00:42:43.93\00:42:46.86 but He was the only one. 00:42:46.90\00:42:49.90 So figuratively, God is saying, 00:42:49.93\00:42:53.23 so let it be done to Me, 00:42:53.27\00:42:55.20 if I were to break My covenant. 00:42:55.24\00:42:57.51 Now, the third stage, 00:42:57.54\00:42:59.24 Genesis 17, 00:42:59.27\00:43:01.84 "Abraham's 99 years old, 00:43:01.88\00:43:04.11 God appears to him says, 00:43:04.15\00:43:06.11 'I am Almighty God, 00:43:06.15\00:43:07.88 walk before Me and be blameless.'" 00:43:07.92\00:43:10.82 Whoa, There is, 00:43:10.85\00:43:13.72 remember, that covenant is God's covenant. 00:43:13.76\00:43:17.33 He always says, My covenant, He makes the promises. 00:43:17.36\00:43:20.23 But there are stipulations. 00:43:20.26\00:43:23.06 There are conditions of obedience. 00:43:23.10\00:43:25.90 He says, walk before me, be blameless, 00:43:25.93\00:43:27.74 I'll make My covenant between Me and you 00:43:27.77\00:43:30.51 and will multiply you exceedingly. 00:43:30.54\00:43:33.48 And Abraham falls on his face. 00:43:33.51\00:43:35.84 And that's when he says, 00:43:35.88\00:43:37.21 my covenant is 00:43:37.25\00:43:38.68 you're going to be the father of many nations, 00:43:38.71\00:43:40.62 I'm going to change your name from Abram, 00:43:40.65\00:43:43.69 which means father is exalted to Abraham, 00:43:43.72\00:43:47.69 which means father of many nations. 00:43:47.72\00:43:50.16 And then he says, 00:43:50.19\00:43:51.53 "I'm going to make this an everlasting covenant, 00:43:51.56\00:43:54.96 that between Me and you, that through you, 00:43:55.00\00:43:59.00 the world is going to be blessed." 00:43:59.03\00:44:00.44 Now, let's look 00:44:00.47\00:44:02.94 in the very short time we've got left. 00:44:02.97\00:44:06.37 Galatians 3:7. 00:44:06.41\00:44:09.38 Paul, in the New Testament makes it abundantly clear 00:44:09.41\00:44:13.38 that the true descendants of Abraham 00:44:13.42\00:44:15.75 are those who have the faith of Abraham, 00:44:15.78\00:44:19.65 who trust in the promised merit, 00:44:19.69\00:44:23.43 or the merits of the Promised Messiah. 00:44:23.46\00:44:26.63 Galatians 3:7, Paul says, 00:44:26.66\00:44:30.57 "Therefore know that only those 00:44:30.60\00:44:33.03 who are of faith are sons of Abraham." 00:44:33.07\00:44:38.01 Then in verse 29, he says, 00:44:38.04\00:44:39.87 "If you are Christ, you are Abraham's seed, 00:44:39.91\00:44:45.11 and heirs according to the promise." 00:44:45.15\00:44:49.45 What is the everlasting covenant? 00:44:49.48\00:44:53.69 It is the Lamb slain 00:44:53.72\00:44:55.32 from the foundation of the world. 00:44:55.36\00:44:57.66 It is God's provision for salvation, for redemption. 00:44:57.69\00:45:02.83 It was introduced when he said, I'm going to... 00:45:02.86\00:45:07.24 The woman is going to have a seed. 00:45:07.27\00:45:08.97 This is why when she said she thinks 00:45:09.00\00:45:12.54 he's going to replace the seed. 00:45:12.57\00:45:14.14 She thinks, hey, Seth is going to be, 00:45:14.18\00:45:16.18 this is Eve, 00:45:16.21\00:45:18.01 the Promise Deliverer, the Messiah. 00:45:18.05\00:45:20.65 But God wants you to know that 00:45:20.68\00:45:24.29 He is inviting you into covenant. 00:45:24.32\00:45:26.45 If you're not in covenant with God, 00:45:26.49\00:45:28.42 you're not saved. 00:45:28.46\00:45:29.79 How simple can I say that? 00:45:29.82\00:45:31.16 Wow. Thank you, Shelley. 00:45:31.19\00:45:32.86 Thank you, all of you. 00:45:32.89\00:45:34.23 I mean, we've been talking about covenants, 00:45:34.26\00:45:36.06 all the way through. 00:45:36.10\00:45:37.43 And although it's kind of like Daniel and Revelation, 00:45:37.47\00:45:41.17 we have been repeating and enlarging 00:45:41.20\00:45:44.21 because Abraham has been mentioned 00:45:44.24\00:45:45.57 a number of times, 00:45:45.61\00:45:46.94 and today, mine is called 00:45:46.98\00:45:48.51 "Covenant Obligation." 00:45:48.54\00:45:50.65 Now, we pointed out the number of covenants 00:45:50.68\00:45:53.08 we find in Scripture. 00:45:53.11\00:45:54.45 Just to cap off what we've talked about, 00:45:54.48\00:45:55.98 I think, since our lesson began. 00:45:56.02\00:45:59.85 There are about depending on how you count, 00:45:59.89\00:46:02.66 if you choose only the Hebrew Bible, 00:46:02.69\00:46:05.19 you find four major categories 00:46:05.23\00:46:08.93 that the Jews consider covenants. 00:46:08.96\00:46:11.03 When you consider the Bible in its totality, 00:46:11.07\00:46:13.07 you find the Edenic covenant, the Noahic covenant, 00:46:13.10\00:46:16.07 the Abrahamic covenant, the Mosaic covenant, 00:46:16.10\00:46:18.71 which also include a Priestly covenant, 00:46:18.74\00:46:21.14 because of the Ark of the Covenant, 00:46:21.18\00:46:23.01 the services that the priests were to perform, 00:46:23.04\00:46:25.78 the Davidic Covenant, and then the New covenant, 00:46:25.81\00:46:28.25 so you can total it about seven. 00:46:28.28\00:46:30.52 But the one thing that unites them all 00:46:30.55\00:46:32.85 is the God who made the covenants. 00:46:32.89\00:46:35.76 So when you look at this, 00:46:35.79\00:46:37.49 you'll find if you put the phrase, 00:46:37.53\00:46:40.00 the short phrase, I will in the Bible, 00:46:40.03\00:46:42.70 and I've tried to track this as well as I can, 00:46:42.73\00:46:45.77 you find more than 2,300 phrases, 00:46:45.80\00:46:49.24 I will. 00:46:49.27\00:46:50.84 And when you look at all of them, 00:46:50.87\00:46:52.21 and I tried my best to count as many as I could, 00:46:52.24\00:46:54.38 because I mean, I couldn't sit there 00:46:54.41\00:46:55.74 and count all 2,300. 00:46:55.78\00:46:57.65 But I noticed that almost all of those were... 00:46:57.68\00:47:02.58 The Lord saying, this is what I'm gonna do, 00:47:02.62\00:47:04.72 I will, I will, I will, I will, I will, 00:47:04.75\00:47:07.99 not to include 00:47:08.02\00:47:09.36 the declarations of a fallen angel, 00:47:09.39\00:47:11.13 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, 00:47:11.16\00:47:12.96 those, take those seven out. 00:47:12.99\00:47:15.23 But in most cases, 00:47:15.26\00:47:16.60 God was making declarations 00:47:16.63\00:47:18.90 and these declarations was from the God of the covenant. 00:47:18.93\00:47:22.70 As we talked about the Tetragrammaton, 00:47:22.74\00:47:26.68 the phonetic name of God Yahweh 00:47:26.71\00:47:29.24 with the, just with YHWH, 00:47:29.28\00:47:33.25 and He is the God of the covenant. 00:47:33.28\00:47:35.18 So these covenants were made from beginning to end, 00:47:35.22\00:47:37.89 and every covenant, 00:47:37.92\00:47:39.39 this is something very important to understand. 00:47:39.42\00:47:42.02 Every covenant that God made, 00:47:42.06\00:47:44.36 He did not have preconditions to Him extending the covenant. 00:47:44.39\00:47:50.37 But He showed it have conditions 00:47:50.40\00:47:51.73 to those who embraced to the covenant. 00:47:51.77\00:47:54.00 Let's start with Genesis 18:19. 00:47:54.04\00:47:57.07 And Abraham has been the star of this panel today. 00:47:57.11\00:48:03.48 He says, 00:48:03.51\00:48:04.85 "For I have known him, 00:48:04.88\00:48:06.78 in order that he may command his children 00:48:06.82\00:48:09.52 and his household after him, 00:48:09.55\00:48:12.22 that they keep the way of the Lord, 00:48:12.25\00:48:15.12 to do righteousness and justice 00:48:15.16\00:48:17.83 that the Lord may bring to Abraham 00:48:17.86\00:48:20.66 what he has spoken to him." 00:48:20.70\00:48:22.73 So the Lord made the covenant 00:48:22.76\00:48:24.10 but he said, wait a minute, 00:48:24.13\00:48:25.67 your children, your household, 00:48:25.70\00:48:27.50 there's something I'm going to require of them. 00:48:27.54\00:48:29.97 And then when we find that requirement 00:48:30.01\00:48:31.61 that the Lord made very clear to Abraham, 00:48:31.64\00:48:34.21 command your household 00:48:34.24\00:48:35.94 after the covenant I've made with you. 00:48:35.98\00:48:38.51 And then you find these words 00:48:38.55\00:48:40.18 that are so beautiful in Genesis 26:5. 00:48:40.22\00:48:43.82 Here's what the Bible says, 00:48:43.85\00:48:46.22 "And why did God bless him? 00:48:46.25\00:48:47.76 Because Abraham obeyed My voice, 00:48:47.79\00:48:51.76 kept My charge, 00:48:51.79\00:48:53.36 My commandments, My statutes, and My laws." 00:48:53.40\00:48:57.37 A lot of people read that and say, 00:48:57.40\00:48:58.73 wait a minute, that's long, long, long before Sinai. 00:48:58.77\00:49:02.50 You have Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, 00:49:02.54\00:49:03.87 you have Jacob's 12 sons 00:49:03.91\00:49:05.24 and you have them going to bondage, 00:49:05.27\00:49:06.74 then they have to come out, 00:49:06.78\00:49:08.11 then the Lord gives them Ten Commandments 00:49:08.14\00:49:09.48 and people that think 00:49:09.51\00:49:11.21 the commandments just came into existence 00:49:11.25\00:49:12.71 at Sinai, I thought, 00:49:12.75\00:49:14.72 well, what commandments did Abraham keep? 00:49:14.75\00:49:16.89 Well, you find in the Bible 00:49:16.92\00:49:18.25 there were 1500 years of unwritten record, 00:49:18.29\00:49:20.49 but there was not 1500 years 00:49:20.52\00:49:21.99 of unwritten requirements to be obedient? 00:49:22.02\00:49:24.93 Why would you... 00:49:24.96\00:49:26.29 Why would there be a need to be obedient 00:49:26.33\00:49:27.73 unless there's something to be obedient in harmony with? 00:49:27.76\00:49:30.77 How could man have sinned all that time, 00:49:30.80\00:49:33.44 lest there's a law that could have been violated? 00:49:33.47\00:49:36.37 But Abraham was the one 00:49:36.40\00:49:37.74 that was the man that was obedient, 00:49:37.77\00:49:39.94 he obeyed My voice. 00:49:39.97\00:49:41.51 Obedience could not exist, 00:49:41.54\00:49:43.38 except there is a law to live in harmony with. 00:49:43.41\00:49:45.81 So we find, once again, 00:49:45.85\00:49:48.48 as we look at the Old Testament 00:49:48.52\00:49:49.95 and the New Testament, 00:49:49.98\00:49:51.32 you find once again, 00:49:51.35\00:49:52.69 this unconditional extension of a commandment 00:49:52.72\00:49:55.89 and a covenant from God. 00:49:55.92\00:49:58.23 But surely He does require obedience 00:49:58.26\00:50:00.50 on the part of those who embrace it. 00:50:00.53\00:50:02.50 Hebrews 10:16. 00:50:02.53\00:50:04.50 We're going all the way down to the New covenant, 00:50:04.53\00:50:07.84 and in as we look through the lessons, 00:50:07.87\00:50:10.51 I'm just so excited 00:50:10.54\00:50:11.87 when we prepare for these lessons, 00:50:11.91\00:50:13.24 as we look through them, 00:50:13.27\00:50:14.61 we start to see things that we love to say today. 00:50:14.64\00:50:16.81 But we got to wait till the time comes, 00:50:16.85\00:50:19.71 because I just have loved this study. 00:50:19.75\00:50:21.98 But He says this is the covenant 00:50:22.02\00:50:23.35 I will make with them 00:50:23.39\00:50:24.85 after those days, says the Lord, 00:50:24.89\00:50:27.56 I will put My laws in their hearts, 00:50:27.59\00:50:30.03 and in their minds, 00:50:30.06\00:50:31.39 I will write them. 00:50:31.43\00:50:32.76 In other words, 00:50:32.79\00:50:34.13 they're not going to have to carry around the Torah. 00:50:34.16\00:50:36.20 They're not gonna have to carry around the Ark of the Covenant. 00:50:36.23\00:50:38.97 It is going to be here, it's going to be here. 00:50:39.00\00:50:41.50 And the consciences of men 00:50:41.54\00:50:43.54 can only be consciences 00:50:43.57\00:50:45.41 when the Spirit of God awakens within them 00:50:45.44\00:50:48.14 this reminder that there's an obligation. 00:50:48.18\00:50:50.25 God made a covenant with you, 00:50:50.28\00:50:52.08 and your obligation to honor that covenant. 00:50:52.11\00:50:54.78 If that covenant is violated, 00:50:54.82\00:50:56.55 it awakens within us the sense of guilt, 00:50:56.58\00:50:58.55 the sense of falling short. 00:50:58.59\00:51:00.42 All have sinned and fallen short 00:51:00.46\00:51:02.06 of the glory of God. 00:51:02.09\00:51:03.43 We can't fall short 00:51:03.46\00:51:04.79 unless there's a covenant to live up to exalt 00:51:04.83\00:51:07.90 and to measure our lives by a standard by 00:51:07.93\00:51:10.77 which each one of us is going to be judged. 00:51:10.80\00:51:13.47 Now, according to the lesson so far, 00:51:13.50\00:51:16.44 we have seen that the covenant is always a covenant of grace. 00:51:16.47\00:51:20.38 But it's never a covenant 00:51:20.41\00:51:21.94 that does not require obedience. 00:51:21.98\00:51:24.31 So suffice it to say this, 00:51:24.35\00:51:26.72 let's look at a couple of passages, 00:51:26.75\00:51:28.28 looking at the obedience aspect of it. 00:51:28.32\00:51:30.25 And I'm going to come at it 00:51:30.29\00:51:31.65 from the New Testament perspective, 00:51:31.69\00:51:33.52 because we know, 00:51:33.56\00:51:34.89 we find all throughout the Old Testament 00:51:34.92\00:51:36.46 this cadence of the children of Israel, 00:51:36.49\00:51:39.16 the cadence of the Hebrews going in, 00:51:39.19\00:51:40.56 the Israelites coming out of Eden, of Noah, of Moses, 00:51:40.60\00:51:45.00 we find these covenants continually made, 00:51:45.03\00:51:47.67 but the covenant language continues in the New Testament. 00:51:47.70\00:51:50.54 Luke 6:46, 00:51:50.57\00:51:52.51 look what the Lord says, 00:51:52.54\00:51:54.01 "Why do you call Me Lord, Lord, 00:51:54.04\00:51:56.64 and do not do the things which I say." 00:51:56.68\00:52:00.02 So the covenant is there too, 00:52:00.05\00:52:01.75 because for anyone who calls the Lord, 00:52:01.78\00:52:04.29 his Lord, or her Lord, 00:52:04.32\00:52:07.52 we must do what the Lord says. 00:52:07.56\00:52:11.26 Remember the Israelites 00:52:11.29\00:52:12.63 when they were given the commandments, 00:52:12.66\00:52:14.00 all that the Lord has said, we will do. 00:52:14.03\00:52:16.63 The same thing applies here in the New Testament, 00:52:16.67\00:52:18.73 why do you call Me Lord, Lord, 00:52:18.77\00:52:20.10 and do not do the things which I say. 00:52:20.14\00:52:22.60 Another one that people love to ignore, 00:52:22.64\00:52:25.01 John 14:15, 00:52:25.04\00:52:26.37 "If you love Me, keep My commandments." 00:52:26.41\00:52:30.55 That simply, 00:52:30.58\00:52:31.98 when the Lord is your God, 00:52:32.01\00:52:34.18 you can't say He is my Lord, 00:52:34.22\00:52:36.48 but I'm not gonna keep His commandments. 00:52:36.52\00:52:38.59 Then you will be guilty as Isaiah 24:5 says, 00:52:38.62\00:52:42.09 "They broke My laws, they violated My commandments, 00:52:42.12\00:52:45.89 or they broke My commandments, they violated My laws." 00:52:45.93\00:52:48.96 You can't call God, 00:52:49.00\00:52:50.80 I'm gonna specifically speak to Christians, 00:52:50.83\00:52:52.63 you can't call Jesus Lord, 00:52:52.67\00:52:55.04 and then ignore His commandments. 00:52:55.07\00:52:57.27 1 John 2:3-4, or verse 4, 00:52:57.31\00:53:00.04 1 John 2:4, 00:53:00.08\00:53:01.41 "He who says, I know Him, 00:53:01.44\00:53:03.18 and does not keep His commandments is a liar, 00:53:03.21\00:53:05.55 and the truth is not in him." 00:53:05.58\00:53:07.18 Does that covenant obligation, 00:53:07.22\00:53:08.85 and then the apostles 00:53:08.88\00:53:10.39 as they went forth proclaiming the gospel, 00:53:10.42\00:53:12.65 once again, 00:53:12.69\00:53:14.02 the show of obedience to that covenant. 00:53:14.06\00:53:16.66 Acts 5:32, 00:53:16.69\00:53:18.23 "And we are His witnesses to these things, 00:53:18.26\00:53:20.66 and so also is the Holy Spirit, 00:53:20.70\00:53:23.26 whom God has given to those who obey Him." 00:53:23.30\00:53:27.04 The covenant is not without obedience. 00:53:27.07\00:53:29.74 Look at these five points. 00:53:29.77\00:53:31.27 God promised Noah 00:53:31.31\00:53:32.64 that his family would be spared. 00:53:32.67\00:53:34.41 But it was on the condition 00:53:34.44\00:53:35.78 of Noah's obedience to God's covenant. 00:53:35.81\00:53:38.15 Hebrews 11:7, 00:53:38.18\00:53:40.22 "By faith Noah being divinely warned of things 00:53:40.25\00:53:42.45 not yet seen, 00:53:42.48\00:53:43.92 moved with godly fear, 00:53:43.95\00:53:45.59 prepared an ark 00:53:45.62\00:53:46.96 for the saving of his household, 00:53:46.99\00:53:48.49 by which he condemned the world 00:53:48.52\00:53:51.43 and became heir of the righteousness 00:53:51.46\00:53:53.83 which is according to faith. 00:53:53.86\00:53:55.26 And as Shelley said, 00:53:55.30\00:53:56.63 there is no other righteousness, 00:53:56.67\00:53:58.00 but righteousness by faith. 00:53:58.03\00:53:59.37 Number two, when God gave Moses the principles of the law, 00:53:59.40\00:54:01.87 Israel responded with affirmation 00:54:01.90\00:54:03.54 that God's law warranted a response. 00:54:03.57\00:54:06.37 And in short, 00:54:06.41\00:54:07.74 all that the Lord has said, we will do. 00:54:07.78\00:54:09.54 Exodus 24:7-8, 00:54:09.58\00:54:11.85 "All that the Lord had said we will do." 00:54:11.88\00:54:15.38 Did they do it? 00:54:15.42\00:54:17.82 You can't do anything by declaration, 00:54:17.85\00:54:19.85 you have to rely on the Spirit of God. 00:54:19.89\00:54:22.16 I can do all things through Christ, 00:54:22.19\00:54:24.13 who strengthens me. 00:54:24.16\00:54:25.49 Number three, 00:54:25.53\00:54:26.86 the covenant of God 00:54:26.90\00:54:28.23 does not dismiss our obligation to God's commandments. 00:54:28.26\00:54:32.57 Psalm 78:10, 00:54:32.60\00:54:34.80 "They did not keep the covenant of God, " why? 00:54:34.84\00:54:37.71 "They refused to walk in His law." 00:54:37.74\00:54:39.97 Let me ask a question. 00:54:40.01\00:54:41.34 Are you a New Testament Christian 00:54:41.38\00:54:42.74 that believes you don't have to walk in God's law? 00:54:42.78\00:54:44.85 Well, the same statement applies to you. 00:54:44.88\00:54:46.58 There's no way that 00:54:46.61\00:54:47.95 you could be a covenant keeping Christian, 00:54:47.98\00:54:50.45 a covenant keeping worshipper of God 00:54:50.49\00:54:52.99 and not be obedient to the law of God. 00:54:53.02\00:54:55.82 Number four, God requires obedience to His covenant. 00:54:55.86\00:54:58.79 Jeremiah 11:1-6, 00:54:58.83\00:55:00.90 I don't have time to read all of it, 00:55:00.93\00:55:02.43 but I'll just simply put it this way. 00:55:02.46\00:55:03.80 He says, 00:55:03.83\00:55:05.17 "Obey my voice, 00:55:05.20\00:55:06.53 and do according to all that I command you 00:55:06.57\00:55:09.40 and you shall be My people." 00:55:09.44\00:55:11.41 And lastly, 00:55:11.44\00:55:13.48 we find that God's covenant is always something 00:55:13.51\00:55:15.58 that comes out of an obligation from our hearts. 00:55:15.61\00:55:18.41 Let me make this point as we transition. 00:55:18.45\00:55:20.72 If your heart is not filled with love for the Lord, 00:55:20.75\00:55:23.89 the covenant of God is His love to you. 00:55:23.92\00:55:27.02 Your response to the covenant of God 00:55:27.06\00:55:29.32 is your love to Him. 00:55:29.36\00:55:31.09 Do you love Him that much? 00:55:31.13\00:55:33.43 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:55:33.46\00:55:35.20 Man, that's, this is a rich lesson. 00:55:35.23\00:55:37.87 This was a rich lesson indeed. 00:55:37.90\00:55:39.23 So let's take some time 00:55:39.27\00:55:40.60 just to go back through and give some final thoughts. 00:55:40.64\00:55:42.00 Monday's lesson we talked about El Shaddai, 00:55:42.04\00:55:44.31 our God who can do anything 00:55:44.34\00:55:46.47 and take any seemingly impossible situation 00:55:46.51\00:55:49.71 and turn it around. 00:55:49.74\00:55:51.11 Just want to encourage you 00:55:51.15\00:55:52.48 no matter what you are going through, 00:55:52.51\00:55:53.95 no matter what you are experiencing, 00:55:53.98\00:55:55.98 call on Him and He will be faithful to you. 00:55:56.02\00:55:58.62 That's right. 00:55:58.65\00:55:59.99 Amen. 00:56:00.02\00:56:01.36 Well, Abram's name was changed to Abraham 00:56:01.39\00:56:04.73 because he chose to be faithful to God. 00:56:04.76\00:56:07.86 And that means that God wants to transform him 00:56:07.90\00:56:11.43 as well as us. 00:56:11.47\00:56:12.80 I'm reading to you from Revelation 2:17, 00:56:12.83\00:56:16.81 "He who has an ear, let him hear 00:56:16.84\00:56:18.87 what the Spirit says to the churches. 00:56:18.91\00:56:21.01 To him who overcomes 00:56:21.04\00:56:22.58 I will give some of the hidden manna to eat, 00:56:22.61\00:56:25.11 and I will give him a white stone, 00:56:25.15\00:56:26.98 and on the stone, a new name written, 00:56:27.02\00:56:29.95 which no one knows 00:56:29.98\00:56:31.32 except him who receives it." 00:56:31.35\00:56:33.19 And God wants to give you a new start, a new name, 00:56:33.22\00:56:36.29 and make you part of his family. 00:56:36.32\00:56:37.66 Amen. 00:56:37.69\00:56:39.03 We saw in on Thursday or Wednesday, 00:56:39.06\00:56:42.26 that God revealed separate, 00:56:42.30\00:56:45.20 He revealed His covenant in several stages to Abraham. 00:56:45.23\00:56:48.80 The progressive unfolding of that 00:56:48.84\00:56:51.94 in Exodus 2:24, 00:56:51.97\00:56:53.68 when God hears the Hebrews, 00:56:53.71\00:56:55.88 He remembers His covenant with Abraham, 00:56:55.91\00:56:59.61 this Sinai covenant is built 00:56:59.65\00:57:03.05 on this everlasting covenant with Abraham. 00:57:03.08\00:57:05.89 In Luke 1:72, God sends Christ, 00:57:05.92\00:57:11.66 He remembers His covenant with Abraham, 00:57:11.69\00:57:14.66 it's all about the everlasting covenant. 00:57:14.70\00:57:17.73 That's right. 00:57:17.77\00:57:19.10 If you're a covenant keeping Christian, 00:57:19.13\00:57:20.47 God does not want lip service, He wants life service. 00:57:20.50\00:57:23.44 Amen. 00:57:23.47\00:57:24.81 Matthew 15:8, 00:57:24.84\00:57:26.17 "The people draw near to Me with their mouth, 00:57:26.21\00:57:28.14 and honor Me with their lips, 00:57:28.18\00:57:29.78 but their hearts are far from Me." 00:57:29.81\00:57:31.21 I pray that you will not be a lip service Christian, 00:57:31.25\00:57:34.12 but a life service Christian. 00:57:34.15\00:57:35.65 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:57:35.68\00:57:37.39 This lesson has reminded me of 00:57:37.42\00:57:39.82 just how committed God really is to us. 00:57:39.85\00:57:42.66 It's not always the case 00:57:42.69\00:57:44.03 that we are as committed to Him. 00:57:44.06\00:57:45.39 But He is certainly committed to us 00:57:45.43\00:57:47.23 and I just want to invite you if you're home watching, 00:57:47.26\00:57:49.50 wherever you are around the world, 00:57:49.53\00:57:50.87 commit yourself to Christ. 00:57:50.90\00:57:52.23 Just reach out to Him and ask Him, 00:57:52.27\00:57:53.60 Lord, help me to be more committed to You, 00:57:53.64\00:57:56.07 and He will give you the spirit to do so. 00:57:56.10\00:57:57.71 We will invite you to come back next week 00:57:57.74\00:57:59.17 and join us for another lesson entitled 00:57:59.21\00:58:01.34 "Children of the Promise." 00:58:01.38\00:58:03.11 Until then, thank you so much for joining us, 00:58:03.14\00:58:05.38 and we will see you right back here next week 00:58:05.41\00:58:07.32 on 3ABN Sabbath School Panel. 00:58:07.35\00:58:09.28
