to be here, Shelley. 00:02:17.67\00:02:19.00 I have the new covenant, which is an exciting topic. 00:02:19.03\00:02:21.37 Oh, this whole thing is exciting. 00:02:21.40\00:02:24.97 Ryan, could you have a prayer for us please? 00:02:25.01\00:02:26.68 Absolutely. 00:02:26.71\00:02:28.14 Father in heaven, Lord, we just are so thankful 00:02:28.18\00:02:30.11 and blessed to be here today, 00:02:30.15\00:02:32.01 to be able to breathe another fresh breath of life 00:02:32.05\00:02:33.98 and be able to use this life Lord for Your glory. 00:02:34.02\00:02:36.82 And so, Lord, as we gather here today, right now 00:02:36.85\00:02:39.55 and we dissect Your Word, 00:02:39.59\00:02:42.26 try to understand the covenants better. 00:02:42.29\00:02:43.89 Lord, I ask that You bless us. 00:02:43.93\00:02:45.49 Give us the Holy Spirit that 00:02:45.53\00:02:46.90 we speak the words that bring glory to You, 00:02:46.93\00:02:49.33 and help to bring understanding to us and everyone listening. 00:02:49.36\00:02:52.17 We ask in Jesus' name, amen. 00:02:52.20\00:02:54.24 Amen and amen. 00:02:54.27\00:02:56.81 Okay. 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.17 Covenant primer is our topic today. 00:02:58.21\00:03:02.01 The memory text is this, 00:03:02.04\00:03:03.88 from Exodus 19:5, 00:03:03.91\00:03:07.05 God's speaking, 00:03:07.08\00:03:08.42 "Now therefore, 00:03:08.45\00:03:09.78 if you will obey My voice indeed 00:03:09.82\00:03:12.05 and keep My covenant, 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.56 then you shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me 00:03:14.59\00:03:19.09 above all the people, for all the earth is Mine." 00:03:19.13\00:03:22.96 Let me tell you something. 00:03:23.00\00:03:24.33 The unifying theme of Scripture is our God 00:03:24.37\00:03:28.50 is a covenant making, 00:03:28.54\00:03:30.54 covenant keeping God. 00:03:30.57\00:03:33.48 That's the everlasting gospel, three angels' messages. 00:03:33.51\00:03:37.05 The first angel comes out, 00:03:37.08\00:03:39.25 and he has the everlasting gospel. 00:03:39.28\00:03:41.68 That's the foundation of the three angels' messages 00:03:41.72\00:03:44.29 of Revelation 14. 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.39 But if somebody asks, 00:03:46.42\00:03:47.76 "What's the everlasting gospel?" 00:03:47.79\00:03:49.86 What would you say? 00:03:49.89\00:03:51.96 It's found in the previous chapter, 00:03:51.99\00:03:54.66 Revelation 13:8, 00:03:54.70\00:03:57.13 "The Lamb who was slain 00:03:57.17\00:04:01.00 before the foundation of the earth." 00:04:01.04\00:04:03.57 This is God's covenant of redemption, 00:04:03.61\00:04:07.48 the grace that was given to us in Christ Jesus 00:04:07.51\00:04:10.35 before time began. 00:04:10.38\00:04:12.65 And you might say, 00:04:12.68\00:04:14.02 "Well, how do we know 00:04:14.05\00:04:15.38 that's the everlasting covenant?" 00:04:15.42\00:04:16.92 Because Hebrews 13:20-21 talks about Jesus' blood 00:04:16.95\00:04:23.59 is the blood of the everlasting covenant. 00:04:23.63\00:04:30.13 Here's the thing. 00:04:30.17\00:04:31.83 When we look at covenants, 00:04:31.87\00:04:34.40 this is the overarching divine plan of God. 00:04:34.44\00:04:38.47 There is a progressive, unfolding. 00:04:38.51\00:04:42.64 Each one of God's covenants 00:04:42.68\00:04:45.11 builds on the last and depends on the last. 00:04:45.15\00:04:49.25 God is revealing Himself ever greater 00:04:49.28\00:04:54.42 until the manifestation of Jesus Christ, 00:04:54.46\00:04:58.46 the covenant of redemption that began before time began. 00:04:58.49\00:05:04.23 So Sunday's lesson is 00:05:04.27\00:05:05.67 "Covenant basics." 00:05:05.70\00:05:07.04 And it says, 00:05:07.07\00:05:08.40 "I will make my covenant," 00:05:08.44\00:05:10.27 in Genesis 17:2, 00:05:10.31\00:05:12.14 "between me and thee 00:05:12.17\00:05:13.88 and will multiply you exceedingly." 00:05:13.91\00:05:17.41 This is a covenant statement God made to Abraham. 00:05:17.45\00:05:21.55 In the Hebrew covenant is berit. 00:05:21.58\00:05:27.22 And it means to obligate, to bind. 00:05:27.26\00:05:30.79 It's interesting 00:05:30.83\00:05:32.33 in the Bible in the Old Testament 00:05:32.36\00:05:34.10 287 times the word covenant is used. 00:05:34.13\00:05:37.90 Of those 287 times, 00:05:37.93\00:05:40.47 270 times it's referring to God's covenant with man. 00:05:40.50\00:05:44.31 The other times it's man's covenant with man. 00:05:44.34\00:05:48.01 When we look at greater understand covenant, 00:05:48.04\00:05:54.12 it implies more than one party, 00:05:54.15\00:05:57.19 it implies a relationship of trust, of love, of loyalty, 00:05:57.22\00:06:03.29 peace of goodness. 00:06:03.32\00:06:05.33 But here's where you can get 00:06:05.36\00:06:07.50 the real understanding of God's covenant. 00:06:07.53\00:06:11.00 What's it mean to bind or obligate? 00:06:11.03\00:06:14.14 In the Greek, 00:06:14.17\00:06:16.20 there are two words for covenant, 00:06:16.24\00:06:18.71 just have a different prefix. 00:06:18.74\00:06:20.71 There's syntheke and diatheke. 00:06:20.74\00:06:25.61 Syntheke is a contract. 00:06:25.65\00:06:28.55 Syntheke is when two parties make terms they come together, 00:06:28.58\00:06:32.62 and it's a contract. 00:06:32.65\00:06:34.42 Syntheke is never used of God's covenants, 00:06:34.46\00:06:38.16 only a covenant of man with man. 00:06:38.19\00:06:41.70 Diatheke is the Greek word for will, for testament, 00:06:41.73\00:06:48.57 270 times in the Old Testament, 00:06:48.60\00:06:52.11 and always in the New Testament. 00:06:52.14\00:06:54.98 Every reference to God's covenant 00:06:55.01\00:06:57.25 is diatheke. 00:06:57.28\00:06:59.05 It is God's will, God's testament. 00:06:59.08\00:07:04.99 And the reason we know that to me this is exciting, 00:07:05.02\00:07:08.12 the Septuagint 00:07:08.16\00:07:09.69 when 70 Hebrew scholars got together, 00:07:09.72\00:07:12.56 and they translated the Old Testament into Greek, 00:07:12.59\00:07:16.50 they always used diatheke, 00:07:16.53\00:07:18.93 just like the New Testament does. 00:07:18.97\00:07:20.87 So it shows us that God's covenant are a will. 00:07:20.90\00:07:25.97 Now interestingly, 00:07:26.01\00:07:27.88 God made two types of covenants. 00:07:27.91\00:07:30.65 There's an obligatory covenant, 00:07:30.68\00:07:32.35 that means it's a covenant 00:07:32.38\00:07:34.02 where God makes all the promises. 00:07:34.05\00:07:36.95 And it is based, 00:07:36.99\00:07:38.59 it's very similar to the Suzerain Vassal treaties 00:07:38.62\00:07:43.06 where a sovereign nation would come in, 00:07:43.09\00:07:46.03 in an effort to demonstrate 00:07:46.06\00:07:47.43 that they were merciful in giving. 00:07:47.46\00:07:49.76 When they took over another nation, 00:07:49.80\00:07:51.93 they would grant favor 00:07:51.97\00:07:54.54 to the subordinate vassal nation. 00:07:54.57\00:07:59.37 But that's the vassal was to obey the stipulations 00:07:59.41\00:08:04.55 of this treaty, 00:08:04.58\00:08:06.08 if you will. 00:08:06.11\00:08:08.42 And so God designed it 00:08:08.45\00:08:09.98 in such a way that they would understand it. 00:08:10.02\00:08:11.95 God makes all the promises in the covenant. 00:08:11.99\00:08:14.96 But obligatory covenants, God says, 00:08:14.99\00:08:17.96 "If you want to be part of My will, 00:08:17.99\00:08:20.06 if you want to be an inheritor, 00:08:20.10\00:08:22.76 a co-inheritor with Jesus Christ, 00:08:22.80\00:08:26.53 what you've got to do 00:08:26.57\00:08:28.40 is walk according to these stipulations." 00:08:28.44\00:08:32.31 God wanted an intimate relationship 00:08:32.34\00:08:34.81 with humanity. 00:08:34.84\00:08:36.24 But He wanted a relationship 00:08:36.28\00:08:39.21 that was based on reciprocal, loyal love. 00:08:39.25\00:08:44.99 One element I love about God's covenant 00:08:45.02\00:08:47.86 over and over again, 00:08:47.89\00:08:49.76 He says, 00:08:49.79\00:08:51.13 "Here's the covenant, 00:08:51.16\00:08:52.49 I will be your God, 00:08:52.53\00:08:54.86 and you will be My people." 00:08:54.90\00:08:56.77 Amen. 00:08:56.80\00:08:58.50 That makes me so excited. 00:08:58.53\00:09:00.90 So what He's saying is His benevolence and protection 00:09:00.94\00:09:05.51 are given in exchange for loyal love. 00:09:05.54\00:09:09.48 Then there were promissory covenants 00:09:09.51\00:09:11.18 like the Davidic covenant, 00:09:11.21\00:09:13.05 where he told David, 00:09:13.08\00:09:14.58 "Your seed will always be on the throne." 00:09:14.62\00:09:17.19 There was no oblige... 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.09 Anything that he had to do. 00:09:19.12\00:09:21.19 Our writer of this quarterly 00:09:21.22\00:09:23.79 brings out that covenants are a relationship. 00:09:23.83\00:09:28.20 They are, if you will, 00:09:28.23\00:09:31.73 there's boundaries to this relationship 00:09:31.77\00:09:34.27 that explains the arrangement of the relationship. 00:09:34.30\00:09:37.97 And here's the three elements. 00:09:38.01\00:09:40.08 He said they always include. 00:09:40.11\00:09:42.64 God affirms the covenant promise with an oath, 00:09:42.68\00:09:45.18 we can look at Galatians 3:16. 00:09:45.21\00:09:48.25 And, interestingly, 00:09:48.28\00:09:49.62 this is in the context of righteousness by faith. 00:09:49.65\00:09:53.02 Listen to what Paul says. 00:09:53.05\00:09:54.69 Galatians 3:16. 00:09:54.72\00:09:56.59 "Now to Abraham and his Seed," 00:09:56.62\00:09:59.56 capital S, not to his seeds, 00:09:59.59\00:10:03.73 "but one seed to your Seed who is Christ. 00:10:03.77\00:10:08.27 So God is making this oath. 00:10:08.30\00:10:10.81 He said to Abraham and the seed where the promise is made. 00:10:10.84\00:10:14.34 Hebrews 6:13 says, 00:10:14.38\00:10:16.78 "When God made a promise to Abraham 00:10:16.81\00:10:19.58 because He could swear by no one greater, 00:10:19.61\00:10:21.75 He swore by himself." 00:10:21.78\00:10:24.65 God's covenants define, 00:10:24.69\00:10:27.82 they establish His relationship with humanity. 00:10:27.86\00:10:32.29 Now the second element of a covenant is obligation, 00:10:32.33\00:10:36.03 obedience to God's will, 00:10:36.06\00:10:39.03 as described in His moral law of love, 00:10:39.07\00:10:42.50 the Ten Commandments. 00:10:42.54\00:10:43.87 Deuteronomy 4:13, God says, 00:10:43.91\00:10:47.11 "He declared to you His covenant, 00:10:47.14\00:10:49.11 which He commanded you to perform." 00:10:49.14\00:10:51.31 And we'll look at that old covenant 00:10:51.35\00:10:52.95 in lessons to come. 00:10:52.98\00:10:54.85 And then he says, 00:10:54.88\00:10:56.22 "The Ten commandments, 00:10:56.25\00:10:57.59 and He wrote them on two tablets of stone." 00:10:57.62\00:11:00.36 I'm going to say up front, 00:11:00.39\00:11:01.72 the Ten Commandments are not the old covenant. 00:11:01.76\00:11:04.19 The Ten Commandments, 00:11:04.23\00:11:05.79 though, are a covenant. 00:11:05.83\00:11:08.30 They are in both the Hebrew and the Greek, 00:11:08.33\00:11:11.63 it just simply means 10 words. 00:11:11.67\00:11:14.54 And they are written in future tense, 00:11:14.57\00:11:19.07 which indicates they are ten promises. 00:11:19.11\00:11:22.61 English, we translated as commandments. 00:11:22.64\00:11:26.45 Basically, it's our interpretation, 00:11:26.48\00:11:29.85 but it's because the syntax 00:11:29.88\00:11:31.49 does indicate they are commandments. 00:11:31.52\00:11:34.09 So the third thing, 00:11:34.12\00:11:35.46 and oh, by the way, 00:11:35.49\00:11:36.83 the Ten Commandments, you will see 00:11:36.86\00:11:38.46 were the heart of the Old Covenant, 00:11:38.49\00:11:41.36 and they are the heart of the New Covenant. 00:11:41.40\00:11:45.17 The third element is the means 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.77 by which the covenant obligation 00:11:48.80\00:11:51.74 is ultimately fulfilled 00:11:51.77\00:11:54.21 is through Christ and the plan of salvation. 00:11:54.24\00:11:57.08 Let's look at Isaiah 42:6. 00:11:57.11\00:11:59.75 I love this verse. 00:11:59.78\00:12:01.42 Isaiah 42:6. 00:12:01.45\00:12:03.82 Speaking of the Messianic servant, 00:12:03.85\00:12:05.82 Jesus Christ, 00:12:05.85\00:12:07.36 God says, 00:12:07.39\00:12:08.72 "I, the Lord, have called You the Messiah, 00:12:08.76\00:12:12.46 in righteousness, 00:12:12.49\00:12:14.10 I will hold your hand, 00:12:14.13\00:12:16.87 I will keep you and give you as a covenant to the people 00:12:16.90\00:12:22.30 as a light to the Gentiles." 00:12:22.34\00:12:27.31 Humanity enters 00:12:27.34\00:12:30.15 into covenant relationship 00:12:30.18\00:12:34.48 with God as our Father 00:12:34.52\00:12:37.45 when we accept this everlasting covenant, 00:12:37.49\00:12:40.36 Jesus Christ. 00:12:40.39\00:12:41.79 When we accept Christ as our Savior, 00:12:41.82\00:12:44.39 when we're born again, 00:12:44.43\00:12:46.26 we enter into covenant. 00:12:46.29\00:12:49.16 Oh, we need to understand this. 00:12:49.20\00:12:51.77 It binds us to God. 00:12:51.80\00:12:54.70 But it obligates us to keep His promises and to... 00:12:54.74\00:13:01.04 I mean, it obligates Him to keep His promises. 00:13:01.08\00:13:04.45 But it obligates us to walk according to His will, 00:13:04.48\00:13:08.98 obedience that is motivated by covenant loyalty, 00:13:09.02\00:13:13.46 and by love. 00:13:13.49\00:13:15.56 We've got to be willing to have 00:13:15.59\00:13:18.79 this committed relationship with Him. 00:13:18.83\00:13:22.76 God will work in us 00:13:22.80\00:13:25.17 to will and to do His good pleasure. 00:13:25.20\00:13:28.30 So even obedience is a gift of grace. 00:13:28.34\00:13:32.71 God will empower our obedience. 00:13:32.74\00:13:36.58 Obedience is not a means to be saved. 00:13:36.61\00:13:42.28 Obedience is a fruit that shows we are safe. 00:13:42.32\00:13:48.62 And when we obey God, 00:13:48.66\00:13:52.03 we are keeping covenant with Him. 00:13:52.06\00:13:56.30 But if we disobey God, we are breaking covenant. 00:13:56.33\00:14:00.34 Let me give you, 00:14:00.37\00:14:01.70 leave this with this one scripture. 00:14:01.74\00:14:04.14 Daniel 9:4, 00:14:04.17\00:14:05.91 Daniel's praying and he says, 00:14:05.94\00:14:07.38 "O Lord, great and awesome God, 00:14:07.41\00:14:10.41 who keeps His covenant and mercy 00:14:10.45\00:14:13.62 with those who love Him, 00:14:13.65\00:14:16.18 and with those who keep His commandments." 00:14:16.22\00:14:21.36 Obedience is part of God's last will 00:14:21.39\00:14:25.83 and testimony for us. 00:14:25.86\00:14:28.03 Johnny. Amen. Amen. 00:14:28.06\00:14:30.10 Well, we move now to Monday's lesson. 00:14:30.13\00:14:32.90 And in Monday's lesson, we have 00:14:32.93\00:14:36.54 "Covenant with Noah," 00:14:36.57\00:14:38.57 Covenant with Noah. 00:14:38.61\00:14:40.01 I like to start with Genesis 6:5. 00:14:40.04\00:14:43.48 In Genesis 6:5. 00:14:43.51\00:14:46.51 Let's go to verse 9. 00:14:46.55\00:14:50.39 "Then the Lord saw 00:14:50.42\00:14:52.05 that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, 00:14:52.09\00:14:54.96 and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart 00:14:54.99\00:14:58.19 was only evil continually. 00:14:58.23\00:15:00.83 And the Lord was sorry 00:15:00.86\00:15:02.66 that He had made man on the earth, 00:15:02.70\00:15:05.47 and He was grieved in His heart. 00:15:05.50\00:15:07.57 So the Lord said, 00:15:07.60\00:15:08.94 'I will destroy man 00:15:08.97\00:15:10.31 whom I have created from the face of the earth, 00:15:10.34\00:15:12.81 both man and beast, creeping thing 00:15:12.84\00:15:15.21 and birds of the air, 00:15:15.24\00:15:16.95 for I am sorry that I have made them." 00:15:16.98\00:15:19.78 Verse 8. 00:15:19.81\00:15:21.38 "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." 00:15:21.42\00:15:27.06 This is beautiful. 00:15:27.09\00:15:28.42 When you see the Scripture, you start reading and you say, 00:15:28.46\00:15:30.96 "Oh, no, God created man in His image." 00:15:30.99\00:15:33.96 And now, the picture is such a horrible picture 00:15:34.00\00:15:37.83 that God is sorry that He made man on the earth. 00:15:37.87\00:15:41.30 He has to make a decision that is shocking. 00:15:41.34\00:15:46.04 He has to destroy men on the earth. 00:15:46.07\00:15:47.41 But when you get to that verse, it says, 00:15:47.44\00:15:49.38 "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." 00:15:49.41\00:15:53.11 And now let me read verse 9. 00:15:53.15\00:15:54.78 And this is the genealogy of Noah. 00:15:54.82\00:15:56.42 "Noah was a just man, perfect in his generation, 00:15:56.45\00:16:00.86 Noah walked with God." 00:16:00.89\00:16:03.69 I like that. 00:16:03.73\00:16:05.06 You see, God saw the whole earth, 00:16:05.09\00:16:09.06 everybody was corrupt. 00:16:09.10\00:16:10.97 And this is a horrible picture of people that 00:16:11.00\00:16:14.04 God is able to look inside the heart, 00:16:14.07\00:16:17.27 and see that even the very thoughts are evil. 00:16:17.31\00:16:21.41 The condition is such that there appears to be no hope. 00:16:21.44\00:16:25.98 But interestingly enough, 00:16:26.01\00:16:28.15 God chose Noah to do a work of mercy. 00:16:28.18\00:16:32.39 God's grace was still extended, 00:16:32.42\00:16:35.09 His hand was still extended to people, repent, repent. 00:16:35.12\00:16:39.69 And Noah was selected to preach for 120 years. 00:16:39.73\00:16:43.87 What a merciful God? 00:16:43.90\00:16:45.67 What a merciful God? 00:16:45.70\00:16:47.04 Let's continue reading. 00:16:47.07\00:16:48.40 Let's go to Genesis 6:13-17, 00:16:48.44\00:16:51.47 "And God said to Noah," 00:16:51.51\00:16:55.01 actually, I'm just going to read verse 13 at this time, 00:16:55.04\00:16:56.75 "And God said to Noah, 00:16:56.78\00:16:58.11 'The end of all flesh has come before Me, 00:16:58.15\00:17:00.48 for the earth is filled with violence through them, 00:17:00.52\00:17:03.28 and behold, I will destroy them with the earth." 00:17:03.32\00:17:06.76 So God tells Noah 00:17:06.79\00:17:09.56 that He has to destroy the people of the earth. 00:17:09.59\00:17:12.93 And He asked him to build an ark, 00:17:12.96\00:17:15.60 so that people may have an opportunity to repent 00:17:15.63\00:17:18.10 and escape the destruction that is coming upon the world. 00:17:18.13\00:17:22.34 Verse 18, no, Genesis 6:18. 00:17:22.37\00:17:25.47 "But with thee will I establish my covenant, 00:17:25.51\00:17:28.84 and thou shalt come into the ark, 00:17:28.88\00:17:31.71 thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, 00:17:31.75\00:17:33.98 and thy sons' wives with thee." 00:17:34.02\00:17:37.05 "Thy sons' wives with thee." 00:17:37.09\00:17:38.42 So we see here that God promised that 00:17:38.45\00:17:39.95 even though He was going to destroy the earth, 00:17:39.99\00:17:42.66 He was going to protect Noah and his family. 00:17:42.69\00:17:45.89 And so we see that 00:17:45.93\00:17:47.26 this covenant that God is making with Noah, 00:17:47.30\00:17:49.96 as you examine this covenant, 00:17:50.00\00:17:51.47 and we're going to do a little bit of that 00:17:51.50\00:17:53.30 in this lesson and more later on. 00:17:53.34\00:17:56.24 You will notice that God is the one making promises, 00:17:56.27\00:17:58.44 God is the one saying, I'm going to do this, 00:17:58.47\00:18:00.01 I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this. 00:18:00.04\00:18:01.54 He didn't ask Noah or his family to do anything. 00:18:01.58\00:18:05.21 And so this is a covenant that needs to be looked at. 00:18:05.25\00:18:08.72 And we're going to just kind of taste it a little bit, 00:18:08.75\00:18:10.99 and then we're going to eat some more of it 00:18:11.02\00:18:12.79 in another lesson. 00:18:12.82\00:18:14.22 And so, let's look after the flood, 00:18:14.26\00:18:16.96 after God has protected Noah and His family, 00:18:16.99\00:18:20.20 unfortunately, 00:18:20.23\00:18:21.56 you know, it's a sad, sad thing, 00:18:21.60\00:18:23.40 that after preaching 120 years, 00:18:23.43\00:18:24.97 I'm going to think, well, he was not a good preacher, 00:18:25.00\00:18:27.54 only his family, 00:18:27.57\00:18:29.00 but it was the people 00:18:29.04\00:18:34.68 rejecting God's grace. 00:18:34.71\00:18:37.25 And unfortunately, 00:18:37.28\00:18:38.68 the Bible tells us that in the end time, 00:18:38.71\00:18:43.08 we're going to face similar situations 00:18:43.12\00:18:44.92 to the days of Noah. 00:18:44.95\00:18:46.45 They were marrying, 00:18:46.49\00:18:47.82 and giving in marriage and drinking. 00:18:47.86\00:18:49.19 And this is, we're seeing this in today's time. 00:18:49.22\00:18:53.60 And so just like Noah, we have to preach the gospel. 00:18:53.63\00:18:58.20 Noah preached the gospel of righteousness, 00:18:58.23\00:19:00.47 the gospel of God to people 120 years. 00:19:00.50\00:19:04.74 And unfortunately, only his family was saved, 00:19:04.77\00:19:08.68 only eight people. 00:19:08.71\00:19:10.48 Let's look after the flood, God protected them. 00:19:10.51\00:19:13.78 And I see something interesting here, 00:19:13.82\00:19:15.52 because it's like God is starting over. 00:19:15.55\00:19:19.69 Let's read Genesis 1:28, 00:19:19.72\00:19:22.19 "Then God blessed them and God said to them, 00:19:22.22\00:19:25.63 'Be fruitful, and multiply. 00:19:25.66\00:19:28.60 Fill the earth and subdue it. 00:19:28.63\00:19:30.63 Have dominion over the fish of the sea, 00:19:30.67\00:19:33.13 over the birds of the air, 00:19:33.17\00:19:34.64 and over every living thing that moves on the earth." 00:19:34.67\00:19:38.74 So we see God's blessing upon Adam and Eve. 00:19:38.77\00:19:42.28 But let's go over now to Genesis 9:1 00:19:42.31\00:19:46.31 to see how God blesses them and what He tells them. 00:19:46.35\00:19:50.55 "So God created, 00:19:50.59\00:19:52.15 so God blessed Noah and his sons 00:19:52.19\00:19:54.62 and said to them, 00:19:54.66\00:19:55.99 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.'" 00:19:56.02\00:19:59.63 Now, notice verse 2, 00:19:59.66\00:20:01.03 "And the fear of you and the dread of you 00:20:01.06\00:20:03.33 shall be on every beast of the earth, 00:20:03.37\00:20:06.23 on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, 00:20:06.27\00:20:09.34 and on all the fish of the sea, 00:20:09.37\00:20:11.84 they are given into your hand." 00:20:11.87\00:20:13.27 Dominion is given, being given to them, 00:20:13.31\00:20:15.94 "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you, 00:20:15.98\00:20:19.45 I have given you all things even as the green herbs, 00:20:19.48\00:20:22.58 but you shall not eat flesh with its life, 00:20:22.62\00:20:26.35 that is, its blood." 00:20:26.39\00:20:27.89 So we see here God giving instruction, 00:20:27.92\00:20:29.76 just like He gave instructions to Adam and Eve, 00:20:29.79\00:20:32.03 He told him, 00:20:32.06\00:20:33.40 "You can eat of the herbs of the field," 00:20:33.43\00:20:35.23 but here the diet is being changed, 00:20:35.26\00:20:37.87 things have changed, 00:20:37.90\00:20:39.23 and now they can eat flesh, eat meat. 00:20:39.27\00:20:42.90 Now, you see, 00:20:42.94\00:20:44.27 God is making a covenant with Noah and his family. 00:20:44.31\00:20:47.01 It's like starting over. 00:20:47.04\00:20:48.38 Let's go to Genesis 9:8, 00:20:48.41\00:20:51.41 "Then God spoke to Noah and his sons 00:20:51.45\00:20:53.31 with him saying, 00:20:53.35\00:20:54.72 'And that's for me, 00:20:54.75\00:20:56.08 behold, I established my covenant with you, 00:20:56.12\00:20:59.85 and with your descendants after you." 00:20:59.89\00:21:02.52 That's you and I. 00:21:02.56\00:21:04.09 "And with every living creature that is with you, 00:21:04.13\00:21:06.70 the birds, the cattle, 00:21:06.73\00:21:08.43 and every beast of the earth with you, 00:21:08.46\00:21:11.03 of all they go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. 00:21:11.07\00:21:15.04 Thus I will establish my covenant with you. 00:21:15.07\00:21:18.14 Never again shall all flesh be cut off 00:21:18.17\00:21:21.11 by the waters of the flood. 00:21:21.14\00:21:22.91 Never again shall be a flood to destroy the earth." 00:21:22.94\00:21:26.92 So God is making this wonderful promise 00:21:26.95\00:21:30.12 to Noah and his family and to us. 00:21:30.15\00:21:33.46 Now, when God told them, He built the ark, 00:21:33.49\00:21:38.66 and they were preaching for 120 years. 00:21:38.69\00:21:42.93 Yes. 00:21:42.96\00:21:45.17 They had to obey God's command. 00:21:45.20\00:21:46.87 If God said, Go into the ark, 00:21:46.90\00:21:48.77 they chose not to, what will happen to them? 00:21:48.80\00:21:50.71 The same thing that happened to the people 00:21:50.74\00:21:52.77 that were outside the ark, 00:21:52.81\00:21:54.54 they were destroyed by the flood. 00:21:54.58\00:21:56.64 So the interesting thing I want to point out to you is 00:21:56.68\00:22:00.28 that after 120 years, 00:22:00.32\00:22:04.75 God could still look 00:22:04.79\00:22:06.96 and see that Noah and his family 00:22:06.99\00:22:09.32 found grace in His sight. 00:22:09.36\00:22:11.56 Nothing changed. 00:22:11.59\00:22:13.16 Noah continued to be faithful 00:22:13.19\00:22:14.76 from the moment God called him 00:22:14.80\00:22:16.56 to the moment he entered into the ark, 00:22:16.60\00:22:19.07 and he continued to be faithful, 00:22:19.10\00:22:20.94 just like that, 00:22:20.97\00:22:22.50 God calls upon us. 00:22:22.54\00:22:24.54 It is not that once you enter into the Christian life, 00:22:24.57\00:22:27.01 you choose to be faithful for a moment, 00:22:27.04\00:22:30.25 or choose to be faithful 00:22:30.28\00:22:31.61 on only on the day you go to church. 00:22:31.65\00:22:34.02 God wants us to be faithful every single day of our life. 00:22:34.05\00:22:38.52 And the Bible does say in Matthew 24, that 00:22:38.55\00:22:43.69 "He who endures to the end, the same shall be saved." 00:22:43.73\00:22:48.10 Noah endured to the end, and he was saved into the ark. 00:22:48.13\00:22:52.80 Now, what God said to Noah, 00:22:52.83\00:22:55.27 what God said to the people of Israel, 00:22:55.30\00:22:57.97 He says to you and to me. 00:22:58.01\00:23:00.61 Notice the words of Isaiah 54:9-10. 00:23:00.64\00:23:05.01 Isaiah 54:9-10, 00:23:05.05\00:23:08.08 "For this is like the waters of Noah to me, 00:23:08.12\00:23:11.59 where Isaiah have sworn 00:23:11.62\00:23:13.56 that the waters of Noah 00:23:13.59\00:23:14.92 would no longer cover the earth, 00:23:14.96\00:23:16.36 so have I sworn that 00:23:16.39\00:23:17.73 I would not be angry with you, nor rebuke you. 00:23:17.76\00:23:20.86 For the mountain shall depart, and the hills be removed, 00:23:20.90\00:23:24.03 but my kindness shall not depart from you, 00:23:24.07\00:23:27.57 nor shall my covenant of peace be removed, 00:23:27.60\00:23:30.64 says the Lord, 00:23:30.67\00:23:32.01 who has mercy on you." 00:23:32.04\00:23:33.54 And yes, the Lord has mercy upon me and on you. 00:23:33.58\00:23:38.68 Noah was an example for you and for me, 00:23:38.71\00:23:43.08 what happened in those days 00:23:43.12\00:23:44.45 was it happened for an example to us. 00:23:44.49\00:23:49.32 Wouldn't it be wonderful, 00:23:49.36\00:23:50.93 if God could look all over the earth, 00:23:50.96\00:23:53.26 find that there is, there are wicked people, 00:23:53.29\00:23:56.60 but of you and your family, you will find grace, 00:23:56.63\00:24:01.10 and that God will say, 00:24:01.14\00:24:03.20 "I want to make My covenant with you and your family." 00:24:03.24\00:24:06.78 This is a choice that you and I have. 00:24:06.81\00:24:09.21 Noah was faithful 00:24:09.24\00:24:11.18 because he chose to be faithful. 00:24:11.21\00:24:12.71 He chose to rely upon the Lord. 00:24:12.75\00:24:14.82 He chose to live his life 00:24:14.85\00:24:16.18 according to the ways of the Lord. 00:24:16.22\00:24:18.09 And you and I have the same opportunity. 00:24:18.12\00:24:20.62 And I hope you will take God's hand and say, 00:24:20.66\00:24:23.53 "Yes, I will follow you all the days of my life." 00:24:23.56\00:24:27.73 Amen and Amen. Thank you. 00:24:27.76\00:24:29.60 And then we see once again, that God is making a covenant, 00:24:29.63\00:24:33.87 but man was obligated to get on to the ark 00:24:33.90\00:24:39.24 to actually establish this covenant, 00:24:39.27\00:24:41.91 and Jesus Christ is our ark today, right? 00:24:41.94\00:24:44.61 All right. 00:24:44.65\00:24:45.98 We're going to take a quick break 00:24:46.01\00:24:47.35 and we'll be right back. 00:24:47.38\00:24:48.72 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:53.25\00:24:54.59 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:24:54.62\00:24:56.73 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:27:32.45\00:27:34.15 He needs someone that can represent Him, 00:27:34.18\00:27:36.12 speak on His behalf 00:27:36.15\00:27:37.49 that He can use to turn the world right side up. 00:27:37.52\00:27:40.72 And so He chooses Abram. 00:27:40.76\00:27:42.79 And so we're going to go to Genesis 12. 00:27:42.82\00:27:44.26 And we're going to read those first three verses there. 00:27:44.29\00:27:46.59 And this is where God kind of introduces Himself to Abraham. 00:27:46.63\00:27:49.66 And He tells them all of the good things 00:27:49.70\00:27:51.40 that He has planned to do for him. 00:27:51.43\00:27:53.30 And so Genesis 12:1-3. 00:27:53.34\00:27:56.10 The Bible says, 00:27:56.14\00:27:57.47 "Now the Lord had said to Abram: 00:27:57.51\00:27:59.91 'Get out of your country, 00:27:59.94\00:28:01.98 from your family and from your father's house, 00:28:02.01\00:28:05.41 to the land that I will show you. 00:28:05.45\00:28:07.75 And I will make you a great nation, 00:28:07.78\00:28:10.39 and I will bless you and make your name great, 00:28:10.42\00:28:13.39 and you shall be a blessing. 00:28:13.42\00:28:15.52 I will bless those who bless you, 00:28:15.56\00:28:17.23 and I will curse him who curses you, 00:28:17.26\00:28:19.59 and in you 00:28:19.63\00:28:20.96 all the families of the earth shall be blessed." 00:28:21.00\00:28:24.77 And so he says, Hey, you know what? 00:28:24.80\00:28:26.13 Get up out of that land that you're at, right? 00:28:26.17\00:28:27.80 I'm going to make you a blessed man. 00:28:27.84\00:28:29.57 I'm going to make you a blessing to others. 00:28:29.60\00:28:31.37 And I'm going to bless you abundantly. 00:28:31.41\00:28:33.01 Got to consider here that the Bible tells us 00:28:33.04\00:28:35.98 if I'm not mistaking that 00:28:36.01\00:28:37.35 they were dwelling in the land of Ur. 00:28:37.38\00:28:38.85 Now Ur was basically a providence 00:28:38.88\00:28:40.48 or a connected city in the region 00:28:40.52\00:28:43.45 and in the valley of Babylon. 00:28:43.49\00:28:45.12 So basically, the city that would become, 00:28:45.15\00:28:46.99 you know, Babel or Babel became Babylon. 00:28:47.02\00:28:49.59 This is where he was dwelling. 00:28:49.62\00:28:51.03 And God says, kind of like that, 00:28:51.06\00:28:53.13 that fourth angel from Revelation 18, 00:28:53.16\00:28:56.23 get out of there, come out of there, My son, 00:28:56.26\00:28:58.03 come out of her, My people. 00:28:58.07\00:28:59.40 And He says, 00:28:59.43\00:29:00.77 "I want to send you on, 00:29:00.80\00:29:02.14 I want you to be that beacon of light. 00:29:02.17\00:29:03.51 And I'm going to bless you 00:29:03.54\00:29:04.87 and you're going to be a blessing to others." 00:29:04.91\00:29:06.24 And so there's actually 00:29:06.27\00:29:07.61 eight different blessings or promises, 00:29:07.64\00:29:09.94 that God promises him that, 00:29:09.98\00:29:11.45 of course, later on we see, 00:29:11.48\00:29:13.68 you know, detailed in a much greater form 00:29:13.72\00:29:16.35 in Genesis Chapter 15, and in Genesis Chapter 17. 00:29:16.38\00:29:19.52 But those eight points of promise are, of course, 00:29:19.55\00:29:22.29 he's going to take him to a new land. 00:29:22.32\00:29:24.69 I'm going to take you out of this land, 00:29:24.73\00:29:26.13 put you in a new land much better than this one. 00:29:26.16\00:29:28.60 He's going to establish through him 00:29:28.63\00:29:30.47 a great nation, 00:29:30.50\00:29:31.93 and God did indeed do that. 00:29:31.97\00:29:33.87 We know that's the case. 00:29:33.90\00:29:35.24 Number three, He promises a blessing, okay. 00:29:35.27\00:29:37.94 So He promises him that I'm going to bless you, 00:29:37.97\00:29:40.24 you're going to be a blessed, man. 00:29:40.28\00:29:41.84 Number four, He promises to make his name great. 00:29:41.88\00:29:44.85 And, of course, we know that, as I said earlier, 00:29:44.88\00:29:47.02 second to only Jesus Christ Himself 00:29:47.05\00:29:49.18 in all of Scripture. 00:29:49.22\00:29:50.59 Abraham is probably the most central figure 00:29:50.62\00:29:53.25 based on the promise 00:29:53.29\00:29:54.62 and the covenant that He made with Abraham 00:29:54.66\00:29:56.32 that would have its ripple effect 00:29:56.36\00:29:57.69 all the way through the generations to come. 00:29:57.73\00:30:00.46 Also, the point number five here, 00:30:00.50\00:30:01.96 He promised that 00:30:02.00\00:30:03.33 Abraham will be a blessing to others. 00:30:03.37\00:30:05.77 And we're going to detail that in just a moment 00:30:05.80\00:30:07.74 on how God would use Abraham to be a blessing to others. 00:30:07.77\00:30:11.07 Of course, number six, 00:30:11.11\00:30:12.54 He will bless those who bless him. 00:30:12.57\00:30:14.54 Man, that's a good one, right? 00:30:14.58\00:30:15.91 Those who blessed Abraham and are good to him, 00:30:15.94\00:30:19.08 God's going to bless him. 00:30:19.11\00:30:20.45 And, of course, He will curse those 00:30:20.48\00:30:21.82 who curse him. 00:30:21.85\00:30:23.18 And then I like point number eight 00:30:23.22\00:30:24.82 that this promise ends with. 00:30:24.85\00:30:27.12 And through Abraham, 00:30:27.16\00:30:28.49 all the families of the earth will be blessed. 00:30:28.52\00:30:33.40 I love this 00:30:33.43\00:30:34.76 because my mind goes back to Galatians 3, 00:30:34.80\00:30:36.87 okay. 00:30:36.90\00:30:38.23 You can't think about the beautiful promise, 00:30:38.27\00:30:40.07 the beautiful covenant that God made with Abram, 00:30:40.10\00:30:42.74 in this case, Abraham, 00:30:42.77\00:30:44.74 without thinking of how it affects us 00:30:44.77\00:30:46.74 and how generations and generations 00:30:46.78\00:30:49.08 and millennia of people have been blessed forevermore, 00:30:49.11\00:30:52.81 because of the covenant that God made with Abraham. 00:30:52.85\00:30:55.12 God honored His word, 00:30:55.15\00:30:56.48 we see the effects of that in Galatians 3. 00:30:56.52\00:30:58.49 I'm going to read verses 6 and 9, 00:30:58.52\00:31:00.32 6 through 9. 00:31:00.36\00:31:01.69 And we're also going to read verse 29. 00:31:01.72\00:31:03.43 So Galatians 3:6-9. 00:31:03.46\00:31:05.79 Notice what the Bible says. 00:31:05.83\00:31:07.16 It says, 00:31:07.20\00:31:08.53 "Just as Abraham 00:31:08.56\00:31:09.90 'believed God, 00:31:09.93\00:31:11.27 and it was accounted to him for righteousness.' 00:31:11.30\00:31:13.13 Therefore know that 00:31:13.17\00:31:14.50 only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 00:31:14.54\00:31:18.51 And the Scripture, foreseeing 00:31:18.54\00:31:20.44 that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, 00:31:20.48\00:31:23.58 preached the gospel to Abraham 00:31:23.61\00:31:25.48 beforehand, saying, 00:31:25.51\00:31:27.68 'In you all the nations shall be blessed.' 00:31:27.72\00:31:31.35 So then those who are of faith 00:31:31.39\00:31:34.29 are blessed with believing Abraham.'" 00:31:34.32\00:31:37.66 And then that beautiful kind of synopsis 00:31:37.69\00:31:40.10 of everything that has been said so far. 00:31:40.13\00:31:42.26 Genesis 3:29, one of my favorite texts, 00:31:42.30\00:31:45.00 excuse me, it's Galatians. 00:31:45.03\00:31:46.40 I saw the G here, you're right. 00:31:46.43\00:31:47.77 Galatians 3:29. 00:31:47.80\00:31:50.31 "And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, 00:31:50.34\00:31:55.34 and heirs according to the promise." 00:31:55.38\00:31:57.25 This is not just a Jewish thing, right? 00:31:57.28\00:31:59.81 God would establish 00:31:59.85\00:32:01.18 a beautiful nation through Abraham 00:32:01.22\00:32:02.68 that would be known as the Jewish nation. 00:32:02.72\00:32:04.65 But this blessing, this blessed covenant blessing 00:32:04.69\00:32:07.96 would continue on to all the nations, 00:32:07.99\00:32:10.09 all the different generations to come. 00:32:10.13\00:32:12.36 If you are of Christ, then you are His, 00:32:12.39\00:32:14.83 that is you are Abraham's seed and heirs 00:32:14.86\00:32:17.50 according to the promise. 00:32:17.53\00:32:18.87 So in this, 00:32:18.90\00:32:20.24 we see the first recorded divine relation to Abraham 00:32:20.27\00:32:23.41 in this portion of Scripture, Genesis Chapter 12, 00:32:23.44\00:32:26.64 God promised to enter 00:32:26.68\00:32:28.01 into a close and lasting relationship with him, 00:32:28.04\00:32:31.41 even before he used any language 00:32:31.45\00:32:33.28 that speaks about covenant making, 00:32:33.31\00:32:34.65 because there's not any language there. 00:32:34.68\00:32:36.02 He doesn't say I'm going to make a covenant. 00:32:36.05\00:32:37.65 But we see the effects of that. 00:32:37.69\00:32:39.29 And, of course, this is like I said a juiced version, 00:32:39.32\00:32:41.62 and a direct reference to the covenant 00:32:41.66\00:32:43.32 that he's going to make later in Genesis 15, and Genesis 17. 00:32:43.36\00:32:46.80 So for the moment, 00:32:46.83\00:32:48.16 God offers a divine human relationship 00:32:48.20\00:32:51.43 of great significance. 00:32:51.47\00:32:53.20 And, of course, you see this in the repeated, 00:32:53.23\00:32:55.07 you know, I will echoed there in Genesis 12:1-3, 00:32:55.10\00:32:58.61 you know, that I will show you, 00:32:58.64\00:32:59.97 I will make you, I will bless you, 00:33:00.01\00:33:01.98 I will bless those, 00:33:02.01\00:33:03.35 I will curse those who curse you. 00:33:03.38\00:33:04.71 God is saying, 00:33:04.75\00:33:06.08 I'm going to put myself out there for you, 00:33:06.11\00:33:07.45 I'm going to be there for you, Abraham, 00:33:07.48\00:33:08.85 You're my man. 00:33:08.88\00:33:10.22 And I'm going to bless you. 00:33:10.25\00:33:11.59 So we also see something amazing here, 00:33:11.62\00:33:13.82 that from this, God says to him, 00:33:13.86\00:33:16.62 Go, go forth. 00:33:16.66\00:33:18.56 That was the command. 00:33:18.59\00:33:19.93 I'm going to do all these things for you, 00:33:19.96\00:33:21.30 will you go for Me? 00:33:21.33\00:33:22.66 And it's amazing to see that from this. 00:33:22.70\00:33:24.70 Abraham's had so much faith and trust 00:33:24.73\00:33:27.34 in the Word of the Lord, that he did indeed do this. 00:33:27.37\00:33:30.14 And the lesson brings that 00:33:30.17\00:33:31.51 I think beautifully in the closing time I have here 00:33:31.54\00:33:33.24 which isn't much. 00:33:33.27\00:33:34.61 I just want to establish the fact 00:33:34.64\00:33:35.98 that Abraham exemplified the relationship 00:33:36.01\00:33:37.98 between faith and works. 00:33:38.01\00:33:40.25 Okay, we're not saved by our works, right? 00:33:40.28\00:33:42.38 We're saved by grace through faith. 00:33:42.42\00:33:44.29 Ephesians 2:8-10 establishes that very clearly 00:33:44.32\00:33:48.26 that we're not saved, 00:33:48.29\00:33:49.62 that we are saved by grace through faith, 00:33:49.66\00:33:52.26 and not of works, right? 00:33:52.29\00:33:53.70 But yet, do we toss out the works? 00:33:53.73\00:33:55.90 Was Abraham saved solely upon the fact that, 00:33:55.93\00:34:00.17 you know, he just believed what God had said, 00:34:00.20\00:34:02.07 but didn't act on it? 00:34:02.10\00:34:03.44 Absolutely not. 00:34:03.47\00:34:04.81 In fact, that's what James brings out. 00:34:04.84\00:34:06.17 Of course, we know that famous Chapter 2, 00:34:06.21\00:34:08.04 James Chapter 2, 00:34:08.08\00:34:09.41 where he's not once not twice, 00:34:09.44\00:34:10.81 but three different times says 00:34:10.85\00:34:12.21 faith without works is, is dead. 00:34:12.25\00:34:14.85 He repeats it three times, verse 17 of James Chapter 2. 00:34:14.88\00:34:18.15 We see it in verse 20 of James Chapter 2, 00:34:18.19\00:34:20.59 and also again in verse 26. 00:34:20.62\00:34:22.62 And so it actually, 00:34:22.66\00:34:23.99 he actually gives the instance here, 00:34:24.03\00:34:25.36 and this is James 2, he uses Abraham as an example. 00:34:25.39\00:34:27.96 He says, 00:34:28.00\00:34:29.33 "Was not Abraham our father," 00:34:29.36\00:34:30.70 this is verse 21 of James 2, 00:34:30.73\00:34:32.77 "Was not Abraham our father 00:34:32.80\00:34:34.14 justified by works 00:34:34.17\00:34:35.50 when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?" 00:34:35.54\00:34:37.77 But then he kind of clarifies in verse 22, 00:34:37.81\00:34:39.81 "Do you see that faith was working together 00:34:39.84\00:34:42.34 with works and by works, faith was made perfect? 00:34:42.38\00:34:46.11 Abraham expressed his faith. 00:34:46.15\00:34:48.12 He believed in trust in the Word of God. 00:34:48.15\00:34:50.52 But how was God able to see 00:34:50.55\00:34:52.49 that he actually did have that faith. 00:34:52.52\00:34:54.99 He went forth just as God sent him, 00:34:55.02\00:34:57.19 he went forth 00:34:57.23\00:34:58.56 and he showed his faith by his works. 00:34:58.59\00:35:01.16 And I think that's something 00:35:01.20\00:35:02.53 that we can learn from Tuesday's lesson 00:35:02.56\00:35:04.20 is that God has all these wonderful promises to us. 00:35:04.23\00:35:06.77 He's put Himself out there for us. 00:35:06.80\00:35:08.14 And He says, 00:35:08.17\00:35:09.50 "I will do all of these wonderful things. 00:35:09.54\00:35:10.87 I will bless you abundantly, if you will trust in Me." 00:35:10.91\00:35:14.64 And sometimes we just verbally say, 00:35:14.68\00:35:16.24 "Yes, Lord, I trust in You. Yes, Lord, I believe in you. 00:35:16.28\00:35:18.95 Yes, Lord, I believe in Your Word." 00:35:18.98\00:35:20.65 But yet, while we're not just, 00:35:20.68\00:35:22.75 when we're not saved by our works, 00:35:22.78\00:35:25.05 the Bible says, we are judged by our works. 00:35:25.09\00:35:27.02 Our faith is determined on whether or not 00:35:27.06\00:35:29.19 we actually do what God tells us to do. 00:35:29.22\00:35:31.19 In this case, I think Tuesday's lesson. 00:35:31.23\00:35:33.70 Abraham was a great example in that matter. 00:35:33.73\00:35:36.06 Amen. 00:35:36.10\00:35:37.43 It's powerful, Ryan. 00:35:37.47\00:35:38.80 I love that and I like this entire lesson 00:35:38.83\00:35:40.40 because we kind of discussed some of the covenants 00:35:40.44\00:35:43.10 but later in subsequent lessons, 00:35:43.14\00:35:45.24 we'll be spending even more time 00:35:45.27\00:35:47.04 on the Abrahamic covenant on the covenant that I have, 00:35:47.08\00:35:49.94 or the New Covenant. 00:35:49.98\00:35:51.38 The covenant I have, "The Covenant with Moses," 00:35:51.41\00:35:53.62 the Sinaitic covenant really begins in Exodus 19, 00:35:53.65\00:35:56.89 and goes all the way through Exodus 24. 00:35:56.92\00:35:59.19 We'll discuss that 00:35:59.22\00:36:00.56 as we get into subsequent lessons. 00:36:00.59\00:36:02.96 And although the Bible speaks of covenants in the plural, 00:36:02.99\00:36:05.66 there is only one basic covenant of salvation 00:36:05.69\00:36:09.43 that is found in Scripture. 00:36:09.46\00:36:11.53 And we see the blessings in the salvation 00:36:11.57\00:36:13.77 that's given by God, 00:36:13.80\00:36:15.14 not earned by us as human beings. 00:36:15.17\00:36:17.44 But yet we are called to respond in faith 00:36:17.47\00:36:20.34 and in obedience. 00:36:20.38\00:36:22.48 Now, it's interesting because many people say, 00:36:22.51\00:36:25.01 well, the covenant at Sinai, that's the covenant of works. 00:36:25.05\00:36:29.18 I'm excited today, 00:36:29.22\00:36:30.55 because we're going to talk about 00:36:30.59\00:36:31.99 how it is a covenant of redemption, 00:36:32.02\00:36:34.29 and a covenant of grace, 00:36:34.32\00:36:36.46 and a covenant of promise from God. 00:36:36.49\00:36:39.06 But before we get to any of that, 00:36:39.09\00:36:41.10 the lesson wants us to talk about briefly 00:36:41.13\00:36:43.13 at the beginning, 00:36:43.16\00:36:44.50 the connection between the Abrahamic covenant, 00:36:44.53\00:36:47.60 or the covenant with Abram, 00:36:47.64\00:36:49.17 and the Sinaitic covenant. 00:36:49.20\00:36:50.64 So let's take a look at that. 00:36:50.67\00:36:52.01 I see at least three connections. 00:36:52.04\00:36:54.21 First connection is 00:36:54.24\00:36:55.58 they both establish a special relationship 00:36:55.61\00:36:58.58 between God and His people. 00:36:58.61\00:37:00.85 We see that in Exodus 19:5, 00:37:00.88\00:37:03.28 this is, of course, the covenant at Sinai. 00:37:03.32\00:37:05.45 Exodus 19:5, 00:37:05.49\00:37:07.32 "Now therefore, if you will, indeed obey My voice, 00:37:07.36\00:37:10.26 and keep My covenant, 00:37:10.29\00:37:11.73 then you shall be a special treasure to me, 00:37:11.76\00:37:14.46 above all people, for all the earth is mine." 00:37:14.50\00:37:17.67 So God is calling the children of Israel 00:37:17.70\00:37:20.27 into a special relationship with Himself. 00:37:20.30\00:37:24.91 He did the same thing with Abraham. 00:37:24.94\00:37:26.88 I think of Genesis 17:7, 00:37:26.91\00:37:30.08 "I will establish My covenant 00:37:30.11\00:37:31.81 between you and your descendants after you 00:37:31.85\00:37:34.15 and their generations, 00:37:34.18\00:37:35.58 for an everlasting covenant, 00:37:35.62\00:37:37.39 to begot to you 00:37:37.42\00:37:38.75 and your descendants after you." 00:37:38.79\00:37:40.66 God wanting to establish that relationship 00:37:40.69\00:37:43.59 between Himself and Abraham and Abraham's descendants, 00:37:43.63\00:37:46.70 who, of course, are the children of Israel. 00:37:46.73\00:37:49.63 Then we see the second connection is that 00:37:49.66\00:37:51.37 they're both called to be a great nation. 00:37:51.40\00:37:54.04 In Sinai, Exodus 19:6, 00:37:54.07\00:37:57.34 "You should be to me a kingdom of priests, 00:37:57.37\00:38:00.31 and a holy nation." 00:38:00.34\00:38:01.68 They're called to be a great nation. 00:38:01.71\00:38:03.78 And, of course, God called Abraham, 00:38:03.81\00:38:05.35 Ryan already established this so beautifully in Genesis 12:2, 00:38:05.38\00:38:09.25 "I'll make of you a great nation, 00:38:09.28\00:38:12.42 and will bless you." 00:38:12.45\00:38:14.12 The third connection I see is that 00:38:14.16\00:38:15.92 obedience is required as a condition of the covenant. 00:38:15.96\00:38:20.86 In Sinai, it says, 00:38:20.90\00:38:22.26 and notice the language is very similar here, 00:38:22.30\00:38:25.83 Exodus 19:5, 00:38:25.87\00:38:27.70 and we compare that with Genesis 22:18. 00:38:27.74\00:38:30.81 Exodus 19:5, 00:38:30.84\00:38:32.57 "Now therefore, if you will, indeed obey My voice," 00:38:32.61\00:38:35.74 you notice the language, 00:38:35.78\00:38:37.11 it says, obey My voice, 00:38:37.15\00:38:38.48 it doesn't say keep My commandments. 00:38:38.51\00:38:39.85 It doesn't say, it says, 00:38:39.88\00:38:41.22 "Obey My voice and keep My covenant." 00:38:41.25\00:38:44.19 You compare it the same wording with Abraham. 00:38:44.22\00:38:47.36 Genesis 22:18, 00:38:47.39\00:38:49.66 "In your seed, 00:38:49.69\00:38:51.03 all the nations of the earth will be blessed, 00:38:51.06\00:38:53.96 because you have," 00:38:54.00\00:38:55.33 what's that word? "Obeyed My voice." 00:38:55.36\00:38:58.50 The same wording, 00:38:58.53\00:38:59.93 I see those connections clearly 00:38:59.97\00:39:01.94 between the covenant 00:39:01.97\00:39:03.30 that God established with Abraham, 00:39:03.34\00:39:04.67 and the covenant that God made with the children of Israel 00:39:04.71\00:39:07.48 there on Mount Sinai. 00:39:07.51\00:39:09.71 They're just delivered from Egypt, 00:39:09.74\00:39:12.48 and they have arrived at Mount Sinai. 00:39:12.51\00:39:14.48 So let's look at the connection 00:39:14.52\00:39:16.62 between the Sinai covenant and grace. 00:39:16.65\00:39:20.22 Number one, 00:39:20.26\00:39:21.59 the covenant is based on redemption. 00:39:21.62\00:39:25.06 Let's turn back to Exodus Chapter 6. 00:39:25.09\00:39:27.60 Exodus Chapter 6, God extends redemption, 00:39:27.63\00:39:31.20 He extends deliverance to His people 00:39:31.23\00:39:33.64 who are in bondage in Egypt. 00:39:33.67\00:39:36.20 Exodus 6:5-6. 00:39:36.24\00:39:38.77 The Lord is talking with Moses here, 00:39:38.81\00:39:40.78 and he says, 00:39:40.81\00:39:42.14 "I have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, 00:39:42.18\00:39:45.11 whom the Egyptians keep in bondage, 00:39:45.15\00:39:47.12 and I have remembered my covenant. 00:39:47.15\00:39:50.85 Therefore say to the children of Israel, 00:39:50.89\00:39:52.59 'I am the Lord. 00:39:52.62\00:39:53.96 I will bring you out 00:39:53.99\00:39:55.32 from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 00:39:55.36\00:39:57.69 I will rescue you from bondage. 00:39:57.73\00:40:00.56 I will redeem you with an outstretched arm 00:40:00.60\00:40:03.60 and with great judgments.'" 00:40:03.63\00:40:05.53 Here I see what a beautiful correlation 00:40:05.57\00:40:07.77 between the covenant and redemption, 00:40:07.80\00:40:10.21 and the covenant and deliverance. 00:40:10.24\00:40:12.91 You know, so many times we think 00:40:12.94\00:40:14.44 that's a covenant of works. 00:40:14.48\00:40:15.81 That's a covenant that I cannot possibly keep in, 00:40:15.84\00:40:19.01 yet here God couches the language 00:40:19.05\00:40:22.32 in connection with that redemption 00:40:22.35\00:40:25.15 and that deliverance. 00:40:25.19\00:40:26.96 We see it in the preamble to the Ten Commandments. 00:40:26.99\00:40:29.82 Exodus 20:2. 00:40:29.86\00:40:31.53 He says, 00:40:31.56\00:40:32.89 "I am the Lord your God, 00:40:32.93\00:40:35.86 who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 00:40:35.90\00:40:38.53 out of the house of bondage." 00:40:38.57\00:40:40.37 We see that connection again in Deuteronomy Chapter 5, 00:40:40.40\00:40:43.41 which is another reiteration of the Ten Commandments 00:40:43.44\00:40:46.51 with that deliverance from bondage. 00:40:46.54\00:40:50.25 We see that in Exodus 19. 00:40:50.28\00:40:53.01 That's the chapter before 00:40:53.05\00:40:54.38 what we call the Ten Commandments. 00:40:54.42\00:40:55.75 Exodus 19:4, 00:40:55.78\00:40:57.12 "You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, 00:40:57.15\00:40:59.29 how I bore you on eagle's wings, 00:40:59.32\00:41:02.86 and brought you to Myself." 00:41:02.89\00:41:05.39 The imagery there is exquisite, 00:41:05.43\00:41:06.93 it reminds me of a baby eagle growing up 00:41:06.96\00:41:09.73 and pushed out of the nest, but they can't quite fly. 00:41:09.76\00:41:13.34 And the mother eagle comes underneath 00:41:13.37\00:41:15.97 and swoops down 00:41:16.00\00:41:17.34 and the baby rests on their back. 00:41:17.37\00:41:18.71 I bore you on eagle's wings. 00:41:18.74\00:41:21.48 God knew the weakness of His people. 00:41:21.51\00:41:24.15 He knew they had been in bondage 00:41:24.18\00:41:26.38 in idolatrous Egypt, 00:41:26.41\00:41:28.88 and they had largely forgotten who their God was. 00:41:28.92\00:41:33.56 They had forgotten His commandments. 00:41:33.59\00:41:35.29 They had forgotten His law of love. 00:41:35.32\00:41:37.73 And He reminds them that He is their Redeemer. 00:41:37.76\00:41:42.70 The covenant at Sinai is based on redemption. 00:41:42.73\00:41:45.53 It's also based on relationship. 00:41:45.57\00:41:48.70 God desire to enter the covenant with His people, 00:41:48.74\00:41:51.11 because He wanted a relationship with them. 00:41:51.14\00:41:54.94 He says in Exodus 6:7, 00:41:54.98\00:41:57.45 "I would take you as My people, 00:41:57.48\00:41:59.71 and I will be your God." 00:41:59.75\00:42:01.28 He wants to be in relationship. 00:42:01.32\00:42:04.12 "Then you should know that I'm the Lord your God 00:42:04.15\00:42:05.92 who brings you out 00:42:05.95\00:42:07.29 from under the burdens of the Egyptians." 00:42:07.32\00:42:09.66 The covenant is not just based on redemption. 00:42:09.69\00:42:11.59 It's not just based on relationship, 00:42:11.63\00:42:14.10 it is based on God's promise. 00:42:14.13\00:42:17.23 This is my favorite part about this covenant here. 00:42:17.27\00:42:20.80 It's God's promise, of course, of a coming Savior. 00:42:20.84\00:42:23.51 We see that in the sacrificial system 00:42:23.54\00:42:25.57 that was set up type, 00:42:25.61\00:42:27.64 looking forward to the Lamb of God, 00:42:27.68\00:42:30.18 the antitype, 00:42:30.21\00:42:31.55 Jesus who would come 00:42:31.58\00:42:32.91 and would take away the sins of the world, 00:42:32.95\00:42:34.45 Jesus' sacrificial provision for their sin 00:42:34.48\00:42:37.99 and their iniquity. 00:42:38.02\00:42:39.55 But we also see God's promise in the Ten Commandments, 00:42:39.59\00:42:43.83 as Shelley already brought out. 00:42:43.86\00:42:47.20 The word in Hebrew isn't commandments at all. 00:42:47.23\00:42:49.90 It's simply words of God, 00:42:49.93\00:42:52.10 the words or you could say, the sayings of God. 00:42:52.13\00:42:56.50 When you look at the Ten Commandments, 00:42:56.54\00:42:58.61 or the ten words, the ten sayings, 00:42:58.64\00:43:01.54 we tend to look at it in language of do and don't, 00:43:01.58\00:43:05.61 thou shalt, thou shalt not. 00:43:05.65\00:43:08.22 But if you look, 00:43:08.25\00:43:09.58 it's actually written 00:43:09.62\00:43:10.95 in the second person singular imperfect. 00:43:10.99\00:43:13.46 You may say, what in the world does that mean? 00:43:13.49\00:43:15.79 The imperfect verb form, 00:43:15.82\00:43:18.49 notes action or state that is still in progress. 00:43:18.53\00:43:22.23 So it's not something that's completed 00:43:22.26\00:43:24.00 or something that is already done in the past. 00:43:24.03\00:43:26.80 It's something that is still in progress. 00:43:26.84\00:43:29.94 The same verb tense, 00:43:29.97\00:43:31.67 the same wording is used in Judges 6:23. 00:43:31.71\00:43:35.68 "And the Lord said unto him, 00:43:35.71\00:43:37.05 'Peace be unto thee, fear not thou shalt not die.'" 00:43:37.08\00:43:40.32 Now when you hear that, Pastor Johnny, 00:43:40.35\00:43:42.22 I wouldn't think now that's a commandment don't die. 00:43:42.25\00:43:44.62 What do I think? 00:43:44.65\00:43:45.99 That's a promise you're not going to die. 00:43:46.02\00:43:49.99 The same thing in Psalm 91:5, the same verb tense, 00:43:50.03\00:43:54.16 "Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, 00:43:54.20\00:43:57.47 nor from the arrow that flies by day." 00:43:57.50\00:43:59.53 So when we read that, we don't think a command, 00:43:59.57\00:44:02.24 don't be afraid. 00:44:02.27\00:44:03.61 It's a promise. 00:44:03.64\00:44:05.37 You don't have to be afraid. 00:44:05.41\00:44:09.28 So I took the liberty 00:44:09.31\00:44:10.65 to rewrite the Ten Commandments. 00:44:10.68\00:44:13.21 This is Jill's version, ten promises. 00:44:13.25\00:44:17.85 Promise number one, 00:44:17.89\00:44:19.25 you will desire only Me, 00:44:19.29\00:44:21.72 nobody and nothing else. 00:44:21.76\00:44:24.86 Promise number two, 00:44:24.89\00:44:26.26 you will have no need for other gods 00:44:26.29\00:44:28.63 or other support systems 00:44:28.66\00:44:30.40 because I will give you everything that you need. 00:44:30.43\00:44:34.67 Promise number three, 00:44:34.70\00:44:36.07 you will reverence and respect Me, 00:44:36.10\00:44:39.21 My name and My character, 00:44:39.24\00:44:41.48 and would do everything you can 00:44:41.51\00:44:43.04 to guard our relationship. 00:44:43.08\00:44:45.81 Promise number four, 00:44:45.85\00:44:47.18 you will delight in spending time with me 00:44:47.22\00:44:49.78 on our special day, the seventh day Sabbath, 00:44:49.82\00:44:52.69 no interruptions, no distractions, 00:44:52.72\00:44:54.96 just quality time with Me. 00:44:54.99\00:44:57.73 Promise number five, 00:44:57.76\00:44:59.43 you will love those who have given you life 00:44:59.46\00:45:02.86 and respected the family that I gave to you. 00:45:02.90\00:45:07.04 Promise number six, 00:45:07.07\00:45:08.94 you will respect others' lives and hold them sacred 00:45:08.97\00:45:13.17 as you would your own. 00:45:13.21\00:45:14.98 Promise number seven, 00:45:15.01\00:45:16.34 you will delight in 00:45:16.38\00:45:17.71 and love the spouse that I gave to you. 00:45:17.75\00:45:20.78 Promise number eight, 00:45:20.82\00:45:22.18 you will have enough with what I've given to you, 00:45:22.22\00:45:24.35 and will have no need to take from somebody else. 00:45:24.39\00:45:27.56 Promise number nine, 00:45:27.59\00:45:28.92 you will speak truthfully 00:45:28.96\00:45:30.43 and well of your neighbors and associates. 00:45:30.46\00:45:34.00 Promise number 10, 00:45:34.03\00:45:35.40 you will be content with what I've given you, 00:45:35.43\00:45:38.23 and will rejoice in my gifts for your life. 00:45:38.27\00:45:42.04 That is the promise of grace that God gave to His people. 00:45:42.07\00:45:46.17 Oh, wonderful, wonderful, beautiful. 00:45:46.21\00:45:47.94 I love the way that you put the Ten Commandments 00:45:47.98\00:45:49.41 in promises, blessings, nothing to be afraid of. 00:45:49.44\00:45:53.05 I like the way that you couch that. 00:45:53.08\00:45:55.05 Now I begin with the new covenant. 00:45:55.08\00:45:57.12 Now in order to understand why we need a new covenant, 00:45:57.15\00:45:59.35 we have to understand 00:45:59.39\00:46:00.89 what did God see that prompted Him 00:46:00.92\00:46:05.29 to move upon Jeremiah, 00:46:05.33\00:46:07.20 to say that a new covenant was needed. 00:46:07.23\00:46:09.70 Isaiah 24:5, 00:46:09.73\00:46:11.30 let's go ahead and go there first. 00:46:11.33\00:46:13.37 I want to kind of give you 00:46:13.40\00:46:14.74 a little bit of historical background 00:46:14.77\00:46:16.10 because we have a lot of terms in Scripture 00:46:16.14\00:46:17.91 that sometimes we wonder, 00:46:17.94\00:46:19.27 well, what's the difference between that one and this one. 00:46:19.31\00:46:21.74 You find the word the term Hebrews, 00:46:21.78\00:46:23.91 and then Israelites and then Jews. 00:46:23.95\00:46:25.81 And if you look 00:46:25.85\00:46:27.18 at the unfolding of the historical background, 00:46:27.22\00:46:28.68 as according to the Jewish Encyclopedia, 00:46:28.72\00:46:32.82 the descendants of Abraham were Hebrews. 00:46:32.85\00:46:36.19 But after the Lord changed, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, 00:46:36.22\00:46:39.63 then Jacob wrestled with God and the Lord said, 00:46:39.66\00:46:41.76 you'll no longer be called Jacob but Israel. 00:46:41.80\00:46:44.53 And after they came out of the exile 00:46:44.57\00:46:46.27 of their time in Egypt, 00:46:46.30\00:46:48.50 from that point on the predominant identity 00:46:48.54\00:46:50.84 by which the Hebrews 00:46:50.87\00:46:52.81 that went into Egypt were called, 00:46:52.84\00:46:55.04 they were now called the Israelites, 00:46:55.08\00:46:57.15 as Exodus 14:15, says, 00:46:57.18\00:46:59.45 tell the children of Israel to go forward. 00:46:59.48\00:47:02.38 And all these things happen as an example, 00:47:02.42\00:47:04.95 and you find scripturally over and over Israelite. 00:47:04.99\00:47:07.52 And now we go down to Revelation 00:47:07.56\00:47:09.42 that the children of Israel, the tribe, tribes of Israel, 00:47:09.46\00:47:12.16 not that tribes of the Hebrews. 00:47:12.19\00:47:14.26 And so you find clearly 00:47:14.30\00:47:15.90 one on the way in the other one on the way out, 00:47:15.93\00:47:19.23 God identifying them, 00:47:19.27\00:47:20.60 but Isaiah 24:5 talks about 00:47:20.64\00:47:22.70 what happened to this beautiful covenant 00:47:22.74\00:47:25.81 that God gave to them, 00:47:25.84\00:47:27.51 the Bible says, 00:47:27.54\00:47:28.88 taken into the entire picture of humanity. 00:47:28.91\00:47:32.01 "The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, 00:47:32.05\00:47:36.02 because they have transgressed to the laws," 00:47:36.05\00:47:38.42 the commandments of God, 00:47:38.45\00:47:40.06 "changed the ordinances, 00:47:40.09\00:47:42.89 the ordinances 00:47:42.92\00:47:44.26 by which you express your commitment 00:47:44.29\00:47:45.83 to God's covenant, 00:47:45.86\00:47:47.66 and broken the everlasting," 00:47:47.70\00:47:49.86 notice that, 00:47:49.90\00:47:51.23 "everlasting. 00:47:51.27\00:47:52.60 It was never intended to be broken, 00:47:52.63\00:47:55.20 it was everlasting." Why? 00:47:55.24\00:47:56.57 Because from God's perspective, God is everlasting. 00:47:56.60\00:48:00.14 And everything that God makes, He doesn't alter. 00:48:00.18\00:48:03.81 I will not alter the covenant that has gone out of My lips. 00:48:03.85\00:48:07.92 But you find then after the changing of, 00:48:07.95\00:48:11.45 after the identity change, and the Israelites, 00:48:11.49\00:48:16.09 the Hebrews losing their identity, 00:48:16.12\00:48:18.69 disconnecting from their roots, 00:48:18.73\00:48:20.30 they learned a lot of Egyptian ways, 00:48:20.33\00:48:23.03 in the land of Egypt as slaves, 00:48:23.06\00:48:26.17 and the Lord in mercy of their 400 year bondage 00:48:26.20\00:48:30.77 began to restore. 00:48:30.81\00:48:32.31 And as you see, 00:48:32.34\00:48:33.68 when God was about to bring them out of Egypt, 00:48:33.71\00:48:36.18 Moses, under God's leadership 00:48:36.21\00:48:37.75 restored to them a day of worship, 00:48:37.78\00:48:39.71 that angered Pharaoh, and he said, 00:48:39.75\00:48:41.08 "Now make brick without straw. 00:48:41.12\00:48:43.05 You've given them one day and seven to rest, 00:48:43.08\00:48:45.12 and the word there rest in the Hebrew is Shabbat, 00:48:45.15\00:48:48.46 or that you've restored to them the Sabbath. 00:48:48.49\00:48:50.83 That's why that restoration was the very reason 00:48:50.86\00:48:53.60 why when they came out later on before Sinai, 00:48:53.63\00:48:57.37 the Lord asked Moses, 00:48:57.40\00:48:58.73 how long do they refuse to keep My commandments? 00:48:58.77\00:49:01.34 How long do they refuse to keep My Sabbaths? 00:49:01.37\00:49:04.04 It had been restored in generations 00:49:04.07\00:49:06.44 that traditions had been crushed 00:49:06.47\00:49:08.98 by the lives of those under Egyptian bondage. 00:49:09.01\00:49:12.41 But now Jeremiah brings into view God's desire, 00:49:12.45\00:49:17.05 not only for those 00:49:17.09\00:49:18.42 who are by nationality an Israelite, 00:49:18.45\00:49:22.82 but those who are Israelites by spiritual identity. 00:49:22.86\00:49:26.70 Let's look at Jeremiah 31:31-33, 00:49:26.73\00:49:29.26 "Behold, the days are coming," says the Lord, 00:49:29.30\00:49:31.90 "when I will make a new covenant 00:49:31.93\00:49:33.27 with the house of Israel, 00:49:33.30\00:49:35.20 and with the house of Judah, 00:49:35.24\00:49:37.87 not according to the covenant 00:49:37.91\00:49:39.41 that I made with their fathers in the day 00:49:39.44\00:49:41.78 that I took them out of by the hand 00:49:41.81\00:49:43.91 to lead them out of the land of Egypt. 00:49:43.95\00:49:46.28 My covenant which they broke," 00:49:46.31\00:49:48.42 God called it an everlasting covenant, 00:49:48.45\00:49:49.92 but he said, "Who broke it?" 00:49:49.95\00:49:51.42 "They did. I didn't break it." 00:49:51.45\00:49:53.29 And it goes on, 00:49:53.32\00:49:54.66 "Though I was a husband to them," 00:49:54.69\00:49:56.96 this is a powerful language, we will see that in a moment, 00:49:56.99\00:49:59.33 says the Lord, 00:49:59.36\00:50:00.70 "But this is the covenant 00:50:00.73\00:50:02.06 that I will make with the house of Israel 00:50:02.10\00:50:03.43 after those days," 00:50:03.47\00:50:04.80 says the Lord, 00:50:04.83\00:50:06.17 "I will put My law in their minds 00:50:06.20\00:50:07.54 and write it on their hearts. 00:50:07.57\00:50:10.54 and I will be their God and they shall be My people." 00:50:10.57\00:50:13.44 Now, I want to make a very important point 00:50:13.48\00:50:15.48 before I go to the husband aspect of it, 00:50:15.51\00:50:17.58 because the husband aspect of the covenant 00:50:17.61\00:50:19.28 is so beautiful. 00:50:19.31\00:50:20.65 That's the language in the Bible 00:50:20.68\00:50:22.15 that God established from the Garden of Eden, 00:50:22.18\00:50:24.75 gave Adam a wife, and it says, 00:50:24.79\00:50:26.76 "You be her husband," 00:50:26.79\00:50:28.59 then God called Himself, the husband man. 00:50:28.62\00:50:31.86 The New Testament, 00:50:31.89\00:50:33.23 He called Himself the husband in the Old Testament, 00:50:33.26\00:50:35.83 and then the church in all through the Bible, 00:50:35.86\00:50:38.77 He's coming back for a bride without, 00:50:38.80\00:50:40.50 a church without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, 00:50:40.54\00:50:43.20 a bride with no spots on her garment, 00:50:43.24\00:50:45.24 which is His righteousness, garments white and clean, 00:50:45.27\00:50:48.51 which is a symbolism of the bride. 00:50:48.54\00:50:51.05 But we find here clearly, 00:50:51.08\00:50:52.71 what does the Bible say about husband? 00:50:52.75\00:50:54.12 Let's go to the New Testament very quickly. 00:50:54.15\00:50:56.55 Husband, the beautiful language as Jesus unfolds it 00:50:56.58\00:50:59.29 through the life of a young man named John, 00:50:59.32\00:51:01.36 whom he says, 00:51:01.39\00:51:02.72 "The one whom the Lord loves." 00:51:02.76\00:51:04.09 John 15:1, 00:51:04.13\00:51:06.39 "I'm the true vine, 00:51:06.43\00:51:07.76 and my father is the husbandman." 00:51:07.80\00:51:10.67 Husbandman comes from the Hebrew word, 00:51:10.70\00:51:13.37 Adamah meaning the Lord of the land 00:51:13.40\00:51:16.57 or the Lord of the earth. 00:51:16.60\00:51:18.21 Jesus refers to His Father as the husbandman, 00:51:18.24\00:51:22.91 the one that dresses the vine. 00:51:22.94\00:51:25.15 John 15:1, once again, 00:51:25.18\00:51:27.05 "I am the vine, My father is the vinedresser." 00:51:27.08\00:51:30.19 Jesus acknowledges His Father, 00:51:30.22\00:51:33.19 for the preservation of a fruitful branch, 00:51:33.22\00:51:36.76 or the removal of an unfruitful branch. 00:51:36.79\00:51:40.00 He's saying, 00:51:40.03\00:51:41.36 "My father decides to remove it, 00:51:41.40\00:51:43.03 or to keep it going." 00:51:43.06\00:51:44.40 That's why you find in the parable, 00:51:44.43\00:51:46.03 where the Lord came three years looking for fruit. 00:51:46.07\00:51:50.27 And the keeper of the garden said, 00:51:50.31\00:51:52.67 not to take it down. 00:51:52.71\00:51:54.04 But just wait, no, no, no, no, no, no, 00:51:54.08\00:51:55.41 leave it for another year, this year also, 00:51:55.44\00:51:58.31 and I'll dig around it, I'll remove the thorns, 00:51:58.35\00:52:00.48 if it bears fruit, fine, 00:52:00.52\00:52:02.05 but if not, then I'll bring it down. 00:52:02.08\00:52:04.42 And you find it eventually, 00:52:04.45\00:52:06.02 when Israel rejected 00:52:06.05\00:52:07.39 or ultimately rejected the Messiah. 00:52:07.42\00:52:09.22 Then He says, 00:52:09.26\00:52:10.59 "Your house is left to you desolate." 00:52:10.63\00:52:12.36 And the sad reality was, John 15:2, 00:52:12.39\00:52:16.73 "Every branch in Me 00:52:16.77\00:52:18.10 that does not be a fruit He takes away, 00:52:18.13\00:52:20.17 and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, 00:52:20.20\00:52:22.74 that it may bear more fruit." 00:52:22.77\00:52:24.11 Have you ever felt the 00:52:24.14\00:52:25.47 pruning of God in your life? 00:52:25.51\00:52:27.14 It's a painful thing. 00:52:27.18\00:52:29.18 But He doesn't prune us to cause us to be unfruitful, 00:52:29.21\00:52:32.68 He prunes us to become more fruitful. 00:52:32.71\00:52:36.48 Couple of points I brought out. 00:52:36.52\00:52:37.85 The only way that fruit can be produced in our lives 00:52:37.89\00:52:40.06 is if we abide in His Son. 00:52:40.09\00:52:43.22 Secondly, the only way that the Father can 00:52:43.26\00:52:45.96 or will cultivate the fruit in our lives 00:52:45.99\00:52:48.03 is if we abide in His Son. 00:52:48.06\00:52:50.57 He's not cultivating fruits apart from His Son. 00:52:50.60\00:52:53.40 Thirdly, God does not know, 00:52:53.44\00:52:54.80 cannot operate in our lives 00:52:54.84\00:52:56.71 when we choose to be independent of His Son. 00:52:56.74\00:53:00.58 The covenant does not just include the Father, 00:53:00.61\00:53:03.51 but it also includes the Son. 00:53:03.55\00:53:05.21 You believe in God, believe also in Me. 00:53:05.25\00:53:07.62 Look at John 15:7-8. 00:53:07.65\00:53:09.75 "If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, 00:53:09.78\00:53:12.55 you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 00:53:12.59\00:53:15.62 By this My father is glorified, 00:53:15.66\00:53:18.79 that you bear much fruit. 00:53:18.83\00:53:20.60 So you will be My disciples." 00:53:20.63\00:53:23.97 Now I have four very quick points. 00:53:24.00\00:53:26.13 Let me see if I can get through those 00:53:26.17\00:53:28.04 talking about the covenant. 00:53:28.07\00:53:29.40 And let me make a very important point. 00:53:29.44\00:53:30.77 In the Old Testament, 00:53:30.81\00:53:32.14 it was necessary to be circumcised 00:53:32.17\00:53:34.98 to be a part of the covenant observations, 00:53:35.01\00:53:37.08 the ceremonies. 00:53:37.11\00:53:38.58 But when the Lord brought about salvation 00:53:38.61\00:53:41.45 and expanded that 00:53:41.48\00:53:42.82 not only to the Jews as a people, 00:53:42.85\00:53:45.95 but to all those who accepted Him, 00:53:45.99\00:53:48.59 there was this pressure from the Jews 00:53:48.62\00:53:50.19 to impose upon others, 00:53:50.23\00:53:51.83 you've got to be circumcised, you got to be circumcised. 00:53:51.86\00:53:54.56 That's one of the reasons 00:53:54.60\00:53:55.93 why when we talk about commandments today, 00:53:55.96\00:53:57.50 people keep misunderstanding that this is not a Jew thing. 00:53:57.53\00:54:01.70 But this is a righteousness application. 00:54:01.74\00:54:04.54 And that's why Paul says in 1 Corinthians 7:19, 00:54:04.57\00:54:07.38 "Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, 00:54:07.41\00:54:11.38 but keeping the commandments of God is what matters." 00:54:11.41\00:54:14.52 Four very quick points. 00:54:14.55\00:54:16.28 The new covenant 00:54:16.32\00:54:17.65 does not abolish the Ten Commandments. 00:54:17.69\00:54:19.39 It reaffirms our obligation to it, 00:54:19.42\00:54:21.86 and to the God it represents. 00:54:21.89\00:54:23.73 Hebrews 10:16, 00:54:23.76\00:54:25.56 "This is the covenant 00:54:25.59\00:54:26.93 I will make with them after those days," 00:54:26.96\00:54:28.30 says the Lord, 00:54:28.33\00:54:29.66 "I will put My laws 00:54:29.70\00:54:31.03 into their hearts and in their minds, 00:54:31.07\00:54:32.40 I will write them." 00:54:32.43\00:54:33.77 That's New Testament. 00:54:33.80\00:54:35.14 The second point, 00:54:35.17\00:54:36.50 the new covenant makes God's law inescapable. 00:54:36.54\00:54:39.41 Wherever we go, 00:54:39.44\00:54:40.78 it is in our hearts and in our minds. 00:54:40.81\00:54:42.81 That is why we are able to feel guilt. 00:54:42.84\00:54:46.61 Because if our heart condemn us, 00:54:46.65\00:54:48.92 then God is greater than our hearts. 00:54:48.95\00:54:50.89 John 3 verse... 00:54:50.92\00:54:52.25 1 John 3:20, 00:54:52.29\00:54:53.62 "For if our hearts condemn us, 00:54:53.66\00:54:54.99 God is greater than our hearts and knows all things." 00:54:55.02\00:54:57.46 The third point, 00:54:57.49\00:54:58.83 the law of God refused 00:54:58.86\00:55:00.20 to deaden our awareness of evil. 00:55:00.23\00:55:04.40 Romans 7:23, 00:55:04.43\00:55:06.10 "But I see another law 00:55:06.13\00:55:07.47 and my members warring against the law of my mind, 00:55:07.50\00:55:09.54 and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin, 00:55:09.57\00:55:12.31 which is in my members." 00:55:12.34\00:55:13.68 It refuses to say, ah, you can escape God's law. 00:55:13.71\00:55:17.55 And the fourth point, 00:55:17.58\00:55:19.11 it is impossible to be a, 00:55:19.15\00:55:21.35 in a covenant relationship with God 00:55:21.38\00:55:23.89 and ignore His law. 00:55:23.92\00:55:26.92 Psalm 78:10, 00:55:26.96\00:55:29.52 "They did not keep the covenant of God, 00:55:29.56\00:55:31.79 they refused to walk in His laws." 00:55:31.83\00:55:34.70 And so, friends, basically saying, 00:55:34.73\00:55:37.20 the covenant of God is everlasting. 00:55:37.23\00:55:40.20 God wants His people 00:55:40.24\00:55:42.10 to also be in an everlasting relationship, 00:55:42.14\00:55:45.07 not only with Him, but with His Son, Christ Jesus. 00:55:45.11\00:55:48.14 And when we do that,
