Amen to that. 00:02:49.06\00:02:50.90 Well, Pastor Dinzey, would you have prayer for us today 00:02:50.93\00:02:52.70 before we get into our lesson? 00:02:52.73\00:02:54.07 Let's go to the Lord in prayer. Okay. 00:02:54.10\00:02:57.01 Our most wonderful, Heavenly Father, 00:02:57.04\00:02:59.64 we pause before You, Lord, 00:02:59.67\00:03:01.01 to ask for that which we have not. 00:03:01.04\00:03:04.01 Because the understanding of the scriptures 00:03:04.05\00:03:07.08 truly comes from You. 00:03:07.12\00:03:09.12 So we pray that Your Holy Spirit 00:03:09.15\00:03:10.69 will be upon us, 00:03:10.72\00:03:12.25 that You will use us according to Your good pleasure. 00:03:12.29\00:03:16.16 And, Lord, we ask also for those that are tuning in 00:03:16.19\00:03:19.63 from whatever ways they can, 00:03:19.66\00:03:22.13 bless them also with an understanding 00:03:22.16\00:03:24.33 of the Holy Scriptures, that as we share, 00:03:24.37\00:03:28.00 You will bring the message Your people need. 00:03:28.04\00:03:31.84 We pray for a blessing upon all. 00:03:31.87\00:03:34.18 And we ask You for these things in the holy 00:03:34.21\00:03:35.98 and blessed name of Jesus. 00:03:36.01\00:03:38.05 Amen. Amen. 00:03:38.08\00:03:39.41 Thank you so much, so much. 00:03:39.45\00:03:42.32 To serve and to save, our memory text is found 00:03:42.35\00:03:45.62 in Isaiah 42:1. 00:03:45.65\00:03:48.46 And I will read that briefly for you says, "Behold! 00:03:48.49\00:03:50.86 My Servant whom I uphold, 00:03:50.89\00:03:54.36 My elect One in whom My soul delights! 00:03:54.40\00:03:59.40 I have put My Spirit upon Him, 00:03:59.43\00:04:01.80 He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles." 00:04:01.84\00:04:06.17 I can't help but to understand, in fact, who that is, 00:04:06.21\00:04:09.28 that's Christ Himself, the Holy One, 00:04:09.31\00:04:12.38 the One in whom God the Father delights. 00:04:12.41\00:04:16.75 You know, when Isaiah speaks about servant, 00:04:16.79\00:04:18.52 we talk about the servant nation, 00:04:18.55\00:04:22.16 but it breaks down servanthood 00:04:22.19\00:04:23.89 not only on the corporate level, 00:04:23.93\00:04:26.53 but it breaks it down on the individual level. 00:04:26.56\00:04:28.46 And then sometimes when it doesn't even mention 00:04:28.50\00:04:30.27 the servant, 00:04:30.30\00:04:31.63 it is making a broader application 00:04:31.67\00:04:34.50 to the fact that whomever receives the Lord 00:04:34.54\00:04:38.14 in his or her life is called to be a servant. 00:04:38.17\00:04:41.78 And the servant is not greater than the Lord. 00:04:41.81\00:04:45.01 So Isaiah in Isaiah 41:8 speaks of Israel, my servant. 00:04:45.05\00:04:50.12 Let's look at that really briefly. 00:04:50.15\00:04:51.49 And then we're going to break down 00:04:51.52\00:04:52.85 the individual components and I have... 00:04:52.89\00:04:55.06 I think, Jill, I have seven points. 00:04:55.09\00:04:56.46 I'm gonna try to fit them in as well as you do it. 00:04:56.49\00:04:58.86 Try to get them in here, but Isaiah 41, 00:04:58.89\00:05:02.16 I just said, what verse did I just say? 00:05:02.20\00:05:03.53 Verse 8. 00:05:03.57\00:05:04.90 Verse 8, "But you, O Israel are my servant, 00:05:04.93\00:05:08.54 Jacob whom I have chosen, the descendants of Abraham," 00:05:08.57\00:05:14.08 and I love that, "my friend." 00:05:14.11\00:05:16.68 So nice when the Lord can call us His friend. 00:05:16.71\00:05:19.71 But a number of things that I noticed in the passage 00:05:19.75\00:05:21.88 as we begin to break it down. 00:05:21.92\00:05:24.25 Jacob is the immediate servant as referred to in Isaiah. 00:05:24.29\00:05:28.19 Actually, Isaiah 48, 00:05:28.22\00:05:30.73 you find Jacob is referred to there. 00:05:30.76\00:05:32.49 Let's go peek at Isaiah 48:20. 00:05:32.53\00:05:35.40 And I know there are some passages 00:05:35.43\00:05:36.77 that we all go over together at the same time. 00:05:36.80\00:05:40.04 But the immediate servant referred to here is Jacob. 00:05:40.07\00:05:43.81 It says, "Go forth from Babylon! 00:05:43.84\00:05:45.34 Flee from the Chaldeans! 00:05:45.37\00:05:47.21 With a voice of singing, declare, proclaim this, 00:05:47.24\00:05:51.91 utter it to the end of the earth, say, 00:05:51.95\00:05:54.62 'The Lord has redeemed His servant Jacob!' " 00:05:54.65\00:06:00.46 And as we know, Jacob is the pre-victorious name 00:06:00.49\00:06:03.56 that later was now changed to Israel, the overcomer. 00:06:03.59\00:06:07.40 It's important to know that because a lot of times 00:06:07.43\00:06:09.36 when people read the Book of Revelation, 00:06:09.40\00:06:11.73 and they read the sons of Jacob, 00:06:11.77\00:06:14.37 or the tribes of Israel. 00:06:14.40\00:06:16.14 They think of these as literal tribes, when in fact, 00:06:16.17\00:06:18.77 by that time, it has such a symbolic application, 00:06:18.81\00:06:21.58 it's important to understand the trajectory 00:06:21.61\00:06:24.31 of from the literal to the symbolic. 00:06:24.35\00:06:26.92 The word Israel, in fact, 00:06:26.95\00:06:28.28 is a term that's more applicable 00:06:28.32\00:06:29.95 to spiritual Israel than it is to literal Israel. 00:06:29.98\00:06:33.52 As Paul says in Romans 9:6, 00:06:33.56\00:06:36.06 "It is not that the Word of God has not taken effect, 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.49 but they are not all Israel that are of Israel." 00:06:38.53\00:06:42.30 So let's not glory in our national origin, 00:06:42.33\00:06:44.53 but let's glory in our spiritual origin. 00:06:44.57\00:06:47.30 You also find that Israel, Exodus 7:16, 00:06:47.34\00:06:50.41 Israel is the nation that is called to serve God. 00:06:50.44\00:06:53.38 Exodus 7:16, says, "And you shall say to him, 00:06:53.41\00:06:57.18 'The Lord God of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, 00:06:57.21\00:07:01.65 'Let My people go, that they may serve Me 00:07:01.68\00:07:04.95 in the wilderness,' 00:07:04.99\00:07:06.82 but indeed, until now you would not hear!' " 00:07:06.86\00:07:09.09 That is the message to Pharaoh. 00:07:09.12\00:07:11.73 He wouldn't let the people of God go. 00:07:11.76\00:07:13.86 But keep that now 00:07:13.90\00:07:15.23 in perspective today paralleling, 00:07:15.26\00:07:16.60 we are living in our wilderness journey. 00:07:16.63\00:07:18.83 And there are forces that refuse to let us go. 00:07:18.87\00:07:22.74 There are habits that refuse to let us go. 00:07:22.77\00:07:25.61 There are things of our past 00:07:25.64\00:07:27.24 that we refuse to disconnect from. 00:07:27.28\00:07:29.81 But the only way that you can serve God 00:07:29.84\00:07:31.65 is just to separate yourself from that thing, 00:07:31.68\00:07:34.08 which has the greatest grip on you. 00:07:34.12\00:07:36.92 Pray that God will not only separate you, 00:07:36.95\00:07:39.39 but pray that you will have the willing mind to let go 00:07:39.42\00:07:42.72 whatever is preventing you from fully serving the Lord. 00:07:42.76\00:07:47.56 And that's what's being emphasized in this passage. 00:07:47.60\00:07:50.33 Let my people go. 00:07:50.37\00:07:51.73 That's what the Lord daily says 00:07:51.77\00:07:53.20 to the forces that are trying to bind us, 00:07:53.23\00:07:54.77 let My people go, that they may serve Me. 00:07:54.80\00:07:57.41 Then Psalm 72:11, 00:07:57.44\00:08:00.04 broadens the picture of service. 00:08:00.08\00:08:02.18 Psalm 72:11, when God's servant is not named, 00:08:02.21\00:08:05.41 it indicates that we should all serve Him. 00:08:05.45\00:08:08.68 Psalm 72:11, it says, "Yes, 00:08:08.72\00:08:10.85 all kings shall fall down before Him, 00:08:10.89\00:08:14.92 all nations shall do" what? 00:08:14.96\00:08:17.09 Serve Him. "All nations shall serve Him." 00:08:17.13\00:08:20.16 The nation of the saved will definitely serve the Lord 00:08:20.20\00:08:23.53 throughout the ceaseless ages of eternity. 00:08:23.57\00:08:26.03 And sometimes people wonder, well, 00:08:26.07\00:08:27.40 what that service is going to be comprised of. 00:08:27.44\00:08:30.21 I'll tell you, it's going to be a delightful service, 00:08:30.24\00:08:33.01 a service to God in an atmosphere 00:08:33.04\00:08:35.14 where there's no more sin, no more death, 00:08:35.18\00:08:36.54 no more suffering, no more crying, no more pain 00:08:36.58\00:08:38.85 is going to be a delightful service. 00:08:38.88\00:08:40.75 And then not only serving God, but we're going to get a chance 00:08:40.78\00:08:44.35 a round trip ticket to go to unfallen worlds, 00:08:44.39\00:08:47.52 to tell people how beautiful it is 00:08:47.56\00:08:49.49 to serve God as redeemed sinners. 00:08:49.52\00:08:51.66 Amen to that? Amen to that. 00:08:51.69\00:08:53.23 Serving God as perfect is an easy thing to do. 00:08:53.26\00:08:56.80 But making this decision 00:08:56.83\00:08:58.87 to serve God as redeemed sinners. 00:08:58.90\00:09:01.74 Now, having the title saint is not an easy thing to do. 00:09:01.77\00:09:05.97 It's a continual commitment on a day by day basis. 00:09:06.01\00:09:09.28 But two points before I go to my seven points, Jill, 00:09:09.31\00:09:12.05 is one, let's go to Isaiah 41:9, 00:09:12.08\00:09:15.22 God chooses us. 00:09:15.25\00:09:18.22 That's first and most important, 00:09:18.25\00:09:19.59 God chooses us. 00:09:19.62\00:09:21.79 Isaiah 41:9, " 00:09:21.82\00:09:23.83 You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, 00:09:23.86\00:09:29.00 and called forth its farthest regions, 00:09:29.03\00:09:32.50 and said to you, 'You are My servant, 00:09:32.53\00:09:35.17 I have chosen you and have not cast you away." 00:09:35.20\00:09:39.04 God chooses us. 00:09:39.07\00:09:41.04 It's a privilege to choose God 00:09:41.08\00:09:42.48 because we are also told to do that. 00:09:42.51\00:09:44.61 But it's so wonderful for God to choose us. 00:09:44.65\00:09:47.65 And then when He chooses us, 00:09:47.68\00:09:49.02 He says, "Now do you choose Me." 00:09:49.05\00:09:50.69 God chose Peter, but then 00:09:50.72\00:09:52.22 Peter had a difficult time choosing God. 00:09:52.25\00:09:55.02 God chose the disciples 00:09:55.06\00:09:56.42 and there was one that didn't chose, 00:09:56.46\00:09:57.86 choose to be faithful. 00:09:57.89\00:09:59.23 We know about that. 00:09:59.26\00:10:00.60 But that's the first thing God chooses us. 00:10:00.63\00:10:01.96 Second point is God protects us. 00:10:02.00\00:10:03.97 Isaiah 41:10, 00:10:04.00\00:10:05.63 "Fear not, for I am with you, 00:10:05.67\00:10:07.00 be not dismayed, for I am your God." 00:10:07.04\00:10:08.77 Amen. 00:10:08.80\00:10:10.14 Jill, you did a wonderful job on this, praise God for that. 00:10:10.17\00:10:12.97 "I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, 00:10:13.01\00:10:15.58 I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.' " 00:10:15.61\00:10:21.05 Point number one, serve the Lord 00:10:21.08\00:10:23.82 through the service rendered to humanity. 00:10:23.85\00:10:26.92 Colossians 3:23-24, 00:10:26.96\00:10:30.09 serve the Lord with your whole heart 00:10:30.13\00:10:32.39 through service rendered to humanity. 00:10:32.43\00:10:35.30 Don't ever say to people, 00:10:35.33\00:10:36.67 you should be glad I'm serving you. 00:10:36.70\00:10:38.03 No, do whatever you do as though you're doing it 00:10:38.07\00:10:41.37 directly to the Lord. 00:10:41.40\00:10:43.64 Colossians 3:23, 00:10:43.67\00:10:45.01 "And whatever you do, do it heartily," 00:10:45.04\00:10:47.24 that means with all your all your being, 00:10:47.28\00:10:50.75 "as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord 00:10:50.78\00:10:54.12 you will receive the reward of the inheritance, 00:10:54.15\00:10:56.28 for you serve the Lord Christ." 00:10:56.32\00:10:58.45 Serve the Lord through the humanity 00:10:58.49\00:11:02.89 that God is bringing you in contact with. 00:11:02.92\00:11:05.59 Second thing, serve the Lord with the right attitude, 00:11:05.63\00:11:08.43 is an attitude to service. 00:11:08.46\00:11:09.80 Some people have the wrong attitude, 00:11:09.83\00:11:11.17 they say, I am, you know, have the right attitude. 00:11:11.20\00:11:14.57 Psalm 100:2, 00:11:14.60\00:11:16.40 "Serve the Lord with gladness," With what? 00:11:16.44\00:11:19.41 "Gladness, come before his presence with singing." 00:11:19.44\00:11:24.28 And Ryan always is blessed by that. 00:11:24.31\00:11:26.98 Come before his presence with singing. 00:11:27.02\00:11:29.55 Serve the Lord with gladness. 00:11:29.58\00:11:31.05 Whatever you do, 00:11:31.09\00:11:32.42 serve the Lord with the right attitude. 00:11:32.45\00:11:35.59 There's nothing more conflicting 00:11:35.62\00:11:38.36 than having the right message and the wrong attitude. 00:11:38.39\00:11:42.30 Sometimes people are not converted by what we say 00:11:42.33\00:11:45.10 but how we say it. 00:11:45.13\00:11:46.47 That's right. 00:11:46.50\00:11:47.84 Not just by the communication of the truth, 00:11:47.87\00:11:49.47 but communicate the truth as one who is converted 00:11:49.50\00:11:52.07 by the very truth that you communicate 00:11:52.11\00:11:54.18 with the right attitude, serve...Third thing, 00:11:54.21\00:11:56.31 serve the Lord exclusively, serve the Lord exclusively. 00:11:56.34\00:12:00.18 Matthew 4:10. 00:12:00.22\00:12:01.88 Matthew 4:10, "Serve the Lord exclusively." 00:12:01.92\00:12:04.35 Don't allow anything else to hinder your service to God. 00:12:04.39\00:12:07.86 And by the way, this is directed to the devil himself. 00:12:07.89\00:12:10.73 And Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan, 00:12:10.76\00:12:13.33 for it is written, 00:12:13.36\00:12:14.70 you shall worship the Lord your God 00:12:14.73\00:12:16.13 and him only you shall serve." 00:12:16.16\00:12:20.30 Kind of pause and ask the question, 00:12:20.34\00:12:22.24 is that a challenge in your life? 00:12:22.27\00:12:24.11 Is there something challenging your service 00:12:24.14\00:12:26.11 that belongs to God alone? 00:12:26.14\00:12:27.98 When you can get that right, 00:12:28.01\00:12:29.34 it's like trying to go left and go right 00:12:29.38\00:12:30.85 at the same time trying to go north and south. 00:12:30.88\00:12:34.28 A heart divided against itself cannot experience success. 00:12:34.32\00:12:39.42 The fourth one, serve the Lord personally. 00:12:39.45\00:12:43.53 Serve the Lord personally. 00:12:43.56\00:12:45.26 Joshua 24:18, 00:12:45.29\00:12:48.16 "And the Lord drove out from before us all the people, 00:12:48.20\00:12:52.50 including the Amorites who dwelt in the land. 00:12:52.53\00:12:57.37 We also serve the Lord, for He is our God." 00:12:57.41\00:13:02.61 Serve the Lord personally. 00:13:02.64\00:13:04.98 Make it personal. 00:13:05.01\00:13:06.41 Whenever we read certain portions of the Bible, 00:13:06.45\00:13:08.32 sometimes I always say, and I say, instead of saying, 00:13:08.35\00:13:12.15 If you love me, say if I love you, 00:13:12.19\00:13:15.42 keep His commandments. 00:13:15.46\00:13:16.79 Make your service to God personal. 00:13:16.83\00:13:19.63 The other one is serve the Lord without distractions. 00:13:19.66\00:13:22.26 1 Corinthians 7:35, 00:13:22.30\00:13:25.13 serve the Lord without distractions. 00:13:25.17\00:13:27.24 "And this I say for your own profit, 00:13:27.27\00:13:30.54 not that I may put a leash on you, 00:13:30.57\00:13:34.31 but for what is proper, 00:13:34.34\00:13:36.04 and that you may serve the Lord without distraction." 00:13:36.08\00:13:39.95 And there are lot of distractions nowadays, 00:13:39.98\00:13:43.22 but praise. 00:13:43.25\00:13:44.59 I always say to people, don't try to read your Bible 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.05 with the television on, with your iPad in your lap, 00:13:46.09\00:13:49.92 with your phone in your lap. 00:13:49.96\00:13:51.43 Cut all of that off, turn the radio off, 00:13:51.46\00:13:54.23 and allow the voice of God to be heard in solitude, 00:13:54.26\00:13:57.13 of reading His Word. 00:13:57.17\00:13:58.50 Number six, serve the Lord 00:13:58.53\00:13:59.90 with the final reward and focus. 00:13:59.93\00:14:01.77 Serve Him with the final reward and focus. 00:14:01.80\00:14:04.07 Matthew 25:21, 00:14:04.11\00:14:06.04 "The Lord said to him, 'Well done, 00:14:06.07\00:14:08.21 good and faithful servant, 00:14:08.24\00:14:10.18 you were faithful over a few things, 00:14:10.21\00:14:11.71 I will make you ruler over many things. 00:14:11.75\00:14:13.92 Enter into the joy of your Lord." 00:14:13.95\00:14:15.82 Serve the Lord with the final reward and focus. 00:14:15.85\00:14:18.95 What do you want to hear? 00:14:18.99\00:14:20.32 I just simply want to hear God say, 00:14:20.36\00:14:21.69 "Well done thou good and faithful servant." 00:14:21.72\00:14:23.06 Amen. 00:14:23.09\00:14:24.43 So when I serve the Lord, I do take people into consideration, 00:14:24.46\00:14:26.73 but my number one focus is the Lord. 00:14:26.76\00:14:29.00 And finally, choose to serve the Lord. 00:14:29.03\00:14:31.70 You know what text I'm going to use, Joshua 24:15. 00:14:31.73\00:14:34.90 That's right. 00:14:34.94\00:14:36.57 "Choose you this day, whom you will serve." 00:14:36.60\00:14:41.54 Be like Joshua and say, "But as for me and my house, " 00:14:41.58\00:14:45.78 what are we going to do? 00:14:45.81\00:14:47.15 "We will serve the Lord." 00:14:47.18\00:14:49.58 Choose to serve the Lord. 00:14:49.62\00:14:52.65 Amen. 00:14:52.69\00:14:54.02 Thank you so much, Pastor John. 00:14:54.06\00:14:56.59 I love those lists. 00:14:56.62\00:14:57.96 Monday's lesson is "Unnamed Individual Servant." 00:15:00.93\00:15:05.07 So in the Book of Isaiah, especially the second half, 00:15:05.10\00:15:08.10 this book of comfort, Isaiah 40 through Isaiah 66, 00:15:08.14\00:15:11.61 we see two different forms of servant. 00:15:11.64\00:15:13.64 As Pastor John already talked about 00:15:13.68\00:15:15.41 this corporate servant meaning Israel or Jacob. 00:15:15.44\00:15:19.95 Then we have the individual servant, 00:15:19.98\00:15:22.42 which is the focus of my lesson. 00:15:22.45\00:15:24.19 Turn with me to Isaiah 42. 00:15:24.22\00:15:26.19 We're going to read the first seven verses 00:15:26.22\00:15:28.62 of Isaiah Chapter 42. 00:15:28.66\00:15:31.73 We knew, know this servant is none other 00:15:31.76\00:15:34.80 than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. 00:15:34.83\00:15:36.53 This is a messianic prophecy. 00:15:36.56\00:15:40.44 This is the first actually of the four servant 00:15:40.47\00:15:44.51 songs in Isaiah. 00:15:44.54\00:15:46.27 There's one in Isaiah 42, 00:15:46.31\00:15:47.94 talking about Jesus the Messiah. 00:15:47.98\00:15:49.68 There's one in Isaiah 49, 00:15:49.71\00:15:51.35 I think Shelley is gonna cover that. 00:15:51.38\00:15:53.18 We have Isaiah 50 is another one. 00:15:53.21\00:15:55.15 And then, of course, the fourth one 00:15:55.18\00:15:56.55 is at the end of Isaiah 52 into Isaiah Chapter 53. 00:15:56.58\00:16:01.52 Now, Isaiah 61 is also a wonderful messianic prophecy, 00:16:01.56\00:16:04.99 but it does not reference the term servant 00:16:05.03\00:16:07.50 as it refers to Jesus. 00:16:07.53\00:16:09.60 So as we look at Isaiah 42, these first seven verses, 00:16:09.63\00:16:12.80 I want to look at, Pastor John, seven identifying 00:16:12.83\00:16:16.30 characteristics of who the servant is. 00:16:16.34\00:16:19.37 How we identify the servant. 00:16:19.41\00:16:21.08 So characteristic number one, 00:16:21.11\00:16:22.94 the servant is anointed by the Holy Spirit. 00:16:22.98\00:16:26.25 Let's read verse 1, Isaiah 42:1, "Behold! 00:16:26.28\00:16:30.75 My Servant whom I uphold, 00:16:30.79\00:16:33.79 My Elect One in whom My soul delights!" 00:16:33.82\00:16:37.36 What's the next phrase? 00:16:37.39\00:16:38.79 "I have put My Spirit upon Him." 00:16:38.83\00:16:43.47 If you turn back to Isaiah Chapter 11, 00:16:43.50\00:16:45.30 we studied this a few quarters ago. 00:16:45.33\00:16:47.30 Isaiah Chapter 11 is another messianic prophecy. 00:16:47.34\00:16:50.71 And we see Isaiah 11:1, 00:16:50.74\00:16:52.61 "There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, 00:16:52.64\00:16:55.78 and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 00:16:55.81\00:16:58.38 The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him." 00:16:58.41\00:17:00.72 Do you notice that? 00:17:00.75\00:17:02.08 So this messianic prophecy in Isaiah 11, 00:17:02.12\00:17:04.45 the spirit rests upon Jesus. 00:17:04.49\00:17:07.36 Here in Isaiah 42, the spirit is put upon Him. 00:17:07.39\00:17:12.79 We see also in Acts 10:38. 00:17:12.83\00:17:15.73 This is Peter, of course, speaking to the Gentiles, 00:17:15.76\00:17:19.53 Cornelius's household. 00:17:19.57\00:17:21.44 Acts 10:38, he says, 00:17:21.47\00:17:23.17 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth 00:17:23.20\00:17:26.11 with the Holy Spirit and with power. 00:17:26.14\00:17:29.11 We see that Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit 00:17:29.14\00:17:31.85 from birth. 00:17:31.88\00:17:33.21 Identifying characteristic number one 00:17:33.25\00:17:35.42 is that this servant, the Messiah 00:17:35.45\00:17:38.12 is anointed by the Holy Spirit. 00:17:38.15\00:17:40.12 Characteristic number two, 00:17:40.16\00:17:41.69 He brings justice to the nations to the earth. 00:17:41.72\00:17:46.39 We just read the second half of Isaiah 42:1. 00:17:46.43\00:17:49.33 We already read the first half, let's read the second half. 00:17:49.36\00:17:51.93 "He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles." 00:17:51.97\00:17:57.11 If you go back to Isaiah 11, we reference that before. 00:17:57.14\00:18:00.74 But Isaiah 11:4 talks about Jesus, 00:18:00.78\00:18:03.51 this messianic prophecy, bringing justice. 00:18:03.55\00:18:06.72 It says, "But with righteousness 00:18:06.75\00:18:08.58 He shall judge the poor, 00:18:08.62\00:18:10.25 and decide with equity for the meek of the earth, 00:18:10.29\00:18:13.69 He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, 00:18:13.72\00:18:16.36 with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked." 00:18:16.39\00:18:20.00 The Messiah is portrayed as bringing righteousness, 00:18:20.03\00:18:23.16 justice, and equity. 00:18:23.20\00:18:25.77 And we know that Jesus fulfilled that, 00:18:25.80\00:18:27.70 I think of John 12:31-32. 00:18:27.74\00:18:30.47 What's it say? 00:18:30.51\00:18:31.84 Now is the judgment of this earth, 00:18:31.87\00:18:33.48 now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 00:18:33.51\00:18:37.28 And I," Jesus speaking of Himself, 00:18:37.31\00:18:39.28 "if I am lifted up 00:18:39.31\00:18:41.65 from the earth would draw all peoples to Myself. 00:18:41.68\00:18:45.45 Jesus' death brought justice back to the world, 00:18:45.49\00:18:49.12 by casting out Satan who had usurped Jesus' position 00:18:49.16\00:18:53.70 as "ruler of this earth." 00:18:53.73\00:18:57.17 Characteristic number three, he the servant, 00:18:57.20\00:19:00.14 this is the Messiah, brings peace. 00:19:00.17\00:19:03.17 He does not fight back. 00:19:03.20\00:19:04.67 Let's look at verse 2, Isaiah 42:2, 00:19:04.71\00:19:07.68 "He will not cry out, " this is a servant, 00:19:07.71\00:19:09.78 referring to Jesus, "nor raise His voice, 00:19:09.81\00:19:13.52 nor cause His voice to be heard in the street." 00:19:13.55\00:19:17.49 Isaiah 53, that powerful passage, verse 7, 00:19:17.52\00:19:20.86 "He was oppressed and He was afflicted, 00:19:20.89\00:19:23.32 yet He opened not His mouth, 00:19:23.36\00:19:25.96 He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, 00:19:25.99\00:19:27.60 and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, 00:19:27.63\00:19:29.76 He opened not His mouth." 00:19:29.80\00:19:32.03 We know Jesus fulfilled that. 00:19:32.07\00:19:34.14 Matthew 27:13-14, "Pilate said to Him, 00:19:34.17\00:19:37.71 'Don't You hear the testimony 00:19:37.74\00:19:39.07 that they're bringing against You?'" 00:19:39.11\00:19:40.88 But Jesus, He didn't make any reply, 00:19:40.91\00:19:43.41 not even to a single charge 00:19:43.45\00:19:45.21 to the great amazement of the governor. 00:19:45.25\00:19:48.38 Characteristic number four, He saves us from sin, 00:19:48.42\00:19:52.49 while strengthening our light and witness for Him. 00:19:52.52\00:19:56.29 I think this is my favorite characteristic. 00:19:56.32\00:19:58.09 Let's read verses 3 and 4. 00:19:58.13\00:20:00.80 A bruised reed, we're back to Isaiah 42. 00:20:00.83\00:20:03.10 I'm sorry, Isaiah 42:3-4, 00:20:03.13\00:20:08.94 "A bruised reed He will not break, 00:20:08.97\00:20:11.44 and smoking flax He will not quench, 00:20:11.47\00:20:15.24 He will bring forth justice for truth. 00:20:15.28\00:20:18.01 He will not fail nor be discouraged, 00:20:18.05\00:20:20.28 till He has established justice in the earth, 00:20:20.32\00:20:22.72 and the coastlands shall wait for His law." 00:20:22.75\00:20:25.42 Now, I always used to think, Pastor Johnny, 00:20:25.45\00:20:27.06 that this was a parallel metaphor. 00:20:27.09\00:20:29.49 Another word saying is, if you're bruised and breaking, 00:20:29.52\00:20:32.59 he's not going to break you. 00:20:32.63\00:20:34.13 And if you're smoking and about ready to go out, 00:20:34.16\00:20:36.93 that's what I thought it meant. 00:20:36.97\00:20:39.33 But if you look at the original Hebrew, 00:20:39.37\00:20:40.94 it's actually a non parallel metaphor. 00:20:40.97\00:20:44.24 The bruised reed literally means 00:20:44.27\00:20:45.81 bruised to crush. 00:20:45.84\00:20:47.78 The bruised reed has suffered an injury. 00:20:47.81\00:20:49.74 Would you say that's true? 00:20:49.78\00:20:51.11 It has been bruised, 00:20:51.15\00:20:53.15 but it still might be repairable. 00:20:53.18\00:20:55.52 It's not completely crushed yet. 00:20:55.55\00:20:58.19 The word for smoking, 00:20:58.22\00:20:59.59 for the smoking flax means something that's dim. 00:20:59.62\00:21:02.86 That's dull or faint. 00:21:02.89\00:21:05.49 You know, in Old Testament times, 00:21:05.53\00:21:07.63 they would use flax as a wick in an old fashioned oil lamp. 00:21:07.66\00:21:11.83 So what we're looking at is an old fashioned oil lamp 00:21:11.87\00:21:14.54 that's partially lit, and it's smoking. 00:21:14.57\00:21:18.64 It's not fully burning yet. 00:21:18.67\00:21:21.84 So in the reed metaphor, 00:21:21.88\00:21:23.48 the bruised reed has begun a process which, 00:21:23.51\00:21:25.91 if it continues, will result in destruction. 00:21:25.95\00:21:29.48 But by contrast, the flax, 00:21:29.52\00:21:31.72 the smoking flax has begun a process which if continued, 00:21:31.75\00:21:35.42 results in a bright flame, they have two opposite effects. 00:21:35.46\00:21:40.90 One is broken, if it continues, 00:21:40.93\00:21:43.50 the other one goes to a bright flame. 00:21:43.53\00:21:46.53 So the reed metaphor may refer to the beginning of evil 00:21:46.57\00:21:49.90 which may still be averted. 00:21:49.94\00:21:51.67 But the flax metaphor may refer to the beginning of good 00:21:51.71\00:21:55.54 which may still be accomplished. 00:21:55.58\00:21:57.78 Now, what in the world does this have to do with a servant? 00:21:57.81\00:22:01.25 It said in verse 4, "He will not fail." 00:22:01.28\00:22:04.69 That's the same root word for the smoking of the flax. 00:22:04.72\00:22:08.39 "He will not fail or be discouraged." 00:22:08.42\00:22:11.39 That's the same root word as the bruised for the reed. 00:22:11.43\00:22:15.63 So Jesus, the servant of the Lord, 00:22:15.66\00:22:17.83 is not to break the bruised reed, 00:22:17.87\00:22:20.37 and He's not to quench the smoking flax. 00:22:20.40\00:22:23.61 What does that mean? 00:22:23.64\00:22:25.11 He was bruised from my sin. 00:22:25.14\00:22:27.61 Isaiah 53, 00:22:27.64\00:22:29.34 "So I, the bruised reed 00:22:29.38\00:22:31.28 do not become destroyed by my sin." 00:22:31.31\00:22:35.22 None of us are so sinful, 00:22:35.25\00:22:37.45 that He cannot heal and restore. 00:22:37.49\00:22:40.02 He became the light of the world. 00:22:40.06\00:22:42.46 We're referencing the smoking flax now. 00:22:42.49\00:22:44.69 He became the light of the world. 00:22:44.73\00:22:46.56 So I, the smoking flax can turn up the light 00:22:46.59\00:22:50.30 and shine brightly for Him. 00:22:50.33\00:22:53.10 He's fitted for His work 00:22:53.13\00:22:54.47 because He has no share in the evils 00:22:54.50\00:22:56.04 which He would heal, 00:22:56.07\00:22:57.41 and none of the weaknesses which He would strengthen. 00:22:57.44\00:23:00.41 There are no bruises in this reed, 00:23:00.44\00:23:02.81 which is Jesus Christ because He's without sin. 00:23:02.84\00:23:05.61 And there is no smokiness and no dimness in His light 00:23:05.65\00:23:09.38 because He is the light of the world. 00:23:09.42\00:23:12.42 Nothing will cause Him to fail or be discouraged 00:23:12.45\00:23:15.06 until His work is complete. 00:23:15.09\00:23:17.76 Moving on characteristic number five, 00:23:17.79\00:23:19.69 He is called in righteousness. 00:23:19.73\00:23:22.80 Verse 6, Isaiah 42:6, 00:23:22.83\00:23:25.43 "I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness, 00:23:25.47\00:23:29.50 and will hold Your hand." 00:23:29.54\00:23:31.91 God, our Creator, called this servant, 00:23:31.94\00:23:34.71 that's Jesus the Messiah in righteousness. 00:23:34.74\00:23:38.78 He was the perfect substitute, sacrifice and savior. 00:23:38.81\00:23:42.68 Characteristic number six, 00:23:42.72\00:23:44.29 He became a covenant to the people 00:23:44.32\00:23:46.32 and a light to the Gentiles. 00:23:46.35\00:23:49.92 Isaiah 42:6, 00:23:49.96\00:23:51.63 "I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, 00:23:51.66\00:23:55.10 as a light to the Gentiles." 00:23:55.13\00:23:57.50 It reminds me of Daniel 9:27, "He confirm, He the Messiah, 00:23:57.53\00:24:02.20 confirm the covenant with many for one week." 00:24:02.24\00:24:05.97 And then in the midst of the week He's cut off. 00:24:06.01\00:24:08.08 It also reminds me of Hebrews 9:15, 00:24:08.11\00:24:10.75 "For this reason He, Jesus, 00:24:10.78\00:24:12.31 is the Mediator of the new covenant, 00:24:12.35\00:24:15.32 by means of death, for the redemption 00:24:15.35\00:24:17.12 of the transgressions under the first covenant." 00:24:17.15\00:24:19.29 He is the mediator of the new covenant. 00:24:19.32\00:24:21.66 Finally, characteristic number seven, 00:24:21.69\00:24:23.76 He set people free, physically and spiritually. 00:24:23.79\00:24:28.43 Isaiah 42:7, His role is to open the blind eyes, 00:24:28.46\00:24:33.00 to bring out prisoners from the prison, 00:24:33.03\00:24:35.20 from those who sit in darkness from the prison house. 00:24:35.24\00:24:39.51 He came to heal people not just from physical issues, 00:24:39.54\00:24:42.74 but from spiritual issues and to set us free. 00:24:42.78\00:24:45.61 So this servant, the Messiah, 00:24:45.65\00:24:47.78 introduced here in Isaiah 42 00:24:47.82\00:24:50.32 was anointed by the Holy Spirit and came to set you and I free. 00:24:50.35\00:24:55.06 Thank you so much, Jill. Thank you so much. 00:24:55.09\00:24:56.93 And as you know, if you've been following us, 00:24:56.96\00:24:58.99 we're just getting started. 00:24:59.03\00:25:00.36 And what a wonderful start, praise the Lord for that. 00:25:00.40\00:25:02.53 But don't go away, we have three more days, 00:25:02.56\00:25:04.77 we'll be right back. 00:25:04.80\00:25:06.13 Ever wish you could watch a 3ABN 00:25:10.54\00:25:12.41 Sabbath School Panel again, 00:25:12.44\00:25:14.04 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:25:14.08\00:25:17.18 Well, you can by visiting 3abnsabbathschoolpanel.com. 00:25:17.21\00:25:22.18 A clean design makes it easy 00:25:22.22\00:25:24.62 to find the program you're looking for. 00:25:24.65\00:25:26.79 There are also links to the Adult Bible Study Guide 00:25:26.82\00:25:30.23 so you can follow along. 00:25:30.26\00:25:31.96 Sharing is easy. 00:25:31.99\00:25:33.33 Just click share and choose your favorite social media. 00:25:33.36\00:25:36.56 Share a link, save a life for eternity. 00:25:36.60\00:25:41.30 Welcome back to our Sabbath School Panel. 00:25:41.34\00:25:43.34 I'm going to go ahead and port it over to Ryan. 00:25:43.37\00:25:46.17 He's going to be covering Tuesday, Persian Messiah. 00:25:46.21\00:25:50.38 I can't wait to hear about this from you. 00:25:50.41\00:25:53.28 All right. All right. 00:25:53.31\00:25:54.65 That's right, lesson number nine, 00:25:54.68\00:25:56.02 "Persian Messiah." 00:25:56.05\00:25:57.85 And, you know, of course, we're talking about Cyrus 00:25:57.89\00:26:00.39 the Great as we're talking about 00:26:00.42\00:26:01.76 the king of the Medes and the Persians. 00:26:01.79\00:26:04.09 And, you know, this is one of those lessons 00:26:04.13\00:26:07.23 that somebody may say, you know, 00:26:07.26\00:26:08.86 it's not really that important that we talk about Cyrus, 00:26:08.90\00:26:10.83 but Cyrus is mentioned in more than one book of the Bible. 00:26:10.87\00:26:13.70 He plays a major role 00:26:13.74\00:26:15.07 in the deliverance of the children of Israel 00:26:15.10\00:26:17.87 coming out of that seven years of Babylonian captivity. 00:26:17.91\00:26:20.98 But we're going to be focusing in on who was Cyrus, 00:26:21.01\00:26:24.15 what did he do, what is the significance 00:26:24.18\00:26:26.55 of God choosing this man? 00:26:26.58\00:26:28.35 And what does it mean? 00:26:28.38\00:26:29.78 What does lesson nine mean by Persian Messiah? 00:26:29.82\00:26:32.95 Is there only one Messiah? Okay. 00:26:32.99\00:26:35.86 So I want to start reading in Isaiah 44:26, 00:26:35.89\00:26:39.83 we're going to read the last couple of verses 00:26:39.86\00:26:41.56 of Isaiah Chapter 44. 00:26:41.60\00:26:43.37 And then we're going to bleed that over into Isaiah 45:1-6. 00:26:43.40\00:26:48.50 Of course, these verses are referring to God 00:26:48.54\00:26:51.47 calling Cyrus the king of the Medes and the Persians. 00:26:51.51\00:26:55.54 So Isaiah Chapter 44, beginning with verse 26. 00:26:55.58\00:26:58.98 Notice what the Bible says, 00:26:59.01\00:27:01.18 "Who confirms the word of His servant, 00:27:01.22\00:27:05.05 and performs the counsel of His messengers, 00:27:05.09\00:27:08.36 who says to Jerusalem, 'You shall be inhabited, 00:27:08.39\00:27:12.33 ' to the cities of Judah, 'You shall be built, 00:27:12.36\00:27:15.63 ' and I will raise up her waste places, 00:27:15.66\00:27:19.40 and who says to the deep, 'Be dry! 00:27:19.43\00:27:23.20 And I will dry up your rivers.' " 00:27:23.24\00:27:26.68 And here come Cyrus in, "Who says of Cyrus, 00:27:26.71\00:27:30.31 'He is My shepherd, 00:27:30.35\00:27:32.51 and he shall perform all My pleasure, 00:27:32.55\00:27:35.62 saying to Jerusalem, 'You shall be built,' 00:27:35.65\00:27:38.25 and to the temple, 00:27:38.29\00:27:39.62 'Your foundation shall be laid.' " 00:27:39.65\00:27:42.36 Now we go on to 45:1, 00:27:42.39\00:27:45.59 "Thus says the Lord to His anointed, to Cyrus, 00:27:45.63\00:27:50.00 whose right hand I have held, 00:27:50.03\00:27:52.10 to subdue nations before him and loose the armor of kings, 00:27:52.13\00:27:57.74 to open before him the double doors, 00:27:57.77\00:28:01.11 so that the gates will not be shut: 00:28:01.14\00:28:03.98 'I will go before you and make the crooked places straight, 00:28:04.01\00:28:09.32 I will break in pieces the gates of bronze 00:28:09.35\00:28:12.32 and cut the bars of iron. 00:28:12.35\00:28:15.06 I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches 00:28:15.09\00:28:19.29 of secret places, 00:28:19.33\00:28:21.60 that you may know that I, the Lord, 00:28:21.63\00:28:24.73 Who call you by your name, am the God of Israel. 00:28:24.77\00:28:30.31 For Jacob My servant's sake, and Israel My elect, 00:28:30.34\00:28:34.18 I have even called you by your name, I have named you, 00:28:34.21\00:28:38.61 though you have not known Me. 00:28:38.65\00:28:41.15 I am the Lord, and there is no other.' " 00:28:41.18\00:28:45.25 And there cannot be a more true statement. 00:28:45.29\00:28:47.32 Because there's no other gods out there, false gods, 00:28:47.36\00:28:51.16 we know them to be false gods, manmade gods, 00:28:51.19\00:28:53.86 the devil has created that has the intelligence 00:28:53.90\00:28:58.33 and the power to be able to name someone 00:28:58.37\00:29:02.27 many, many, many years before they're even born. 00:29:02.30\00:29:05.77 And this is what's powerful about when you consider 00:29:05.81\00:29:08.84 the Ministry of Isaiah because, of course, 00:29:08.88\00:29:10.31 Isaiah is writing this, 00:29:10.35\00:29:12.38 and Isaiah's ministry lasted about 60 years. 00:29:12.41\00:29:16.52 And so that would have been between, 00:29:16.55\00:29:17.99 you know, 745 BC to about 685 BC. 00:29:18.02\00:29:22.06 But it wasn't until 146 years later. 00:29:22.09\00:29:26.16 So about a century and a half later 00:29:26.19\00:29:28.10 that God would raise up Cyrus, 00:29:28.13\00:29:30.83 this Cyrus that he's speaking of, to call him to do 00:29:30.87\00:29:33.77 what it is that he's speaking of in this chapter. 00:29:33.80\00:29:35.57 So this is powerful, just to recognize the fact that, 00:29:35.60\00:29:38.17 you know, God mentions more than once in this passage 00:29:38.21\00:29:40.11 that we just read, you know, I've called you by your name. 00:29:40.14\00:29:42.44 Who is it that calls you by your name? 00:29:42.48\00:29:43.95 I called, I called you by your name 00:29:43.98\00:29:46.08 because I am the God 00:29:46.11\00:29:48.15 who, and there is no other like me, right? 00:29:48.18\00:29:50.29 And so God is establishing the validity of the fact 00:29:50.32\00:29:53.19 that you can trust in His Word 00:29:53.22\00:29:54.66 and we'll come back to that point in just a moment. 00:29:54.69\00:29:57.29 But I want to just kind of go back 00:29:57.33\00:29:58.66 and highlight a few things here, 00:29:58.69\00:30:00.03 to emphasize the fact that this is the Cyrus 00:30:00.06\00:30:02.56 that God chose and why He chose him 00:30:02.60\00:30:04.73 and to validify through the Scripture 00:30:04.77\00:30:10.01 and history as we will see that Cyrus would come 00:30:10.04\00:30:13.24 and he would do this mighty work 00:30:13.27\00:30:14.61 just as the Lord had said that he would do. 00:30:14.64\00:30:16.54 So let's go back to Isaiah Chapter 45. 00:30:16.58\00:30:18.68 We're gonna start with verse 1 here. 00:30:18.71\00:30:20.62 Isaiah 45:1, it says, 00:30:20.65\00:30:22.05 "Thus says the Lord to his anointed..." 00:30:22.08\00:30:24.75 Now we'll come back to that anointed in just a moment, 00:30:24.79\00:30:26.99 because that's where that Messiah word comes in. 00:30:27.02\00:30:30.79 It says, "To Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, 00:30:30.83\00:30:34.16 to subdue nations before him 00:30:34.20\00:30:36.03 and to lose the armor of kings." 00:30:36.06\00:30:38.57 Now, we have to keep in mind, 00:30:38.60\00:30:40.40 again give credit where credit is due, 00:30:40.44\00:30:42.30 not necessarily to the man but to the God who led the man 00:30:42.34\00:30:45.47 and who opened the door for Cyrus 00:30:45.51\00:30:47.14 to be able to do what he done. 00:30:47.18\00:30:48.68 We have to keep in mind there of those four major empires 00:30:48.71\00:30:51.85 that are mentioned there in Daniel Chapter 2, 00:30:51.88\00:30:53.88 the worldly empires, you have Babylon, 00:30:53.92\00:30:56.18 Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome. 00:30:56.22\00:30:58.19 You know, we know that Rome obviously went on to reign 00:30:58.22\00:31:01.02 for the longest period of time. 00:31:01.06\00:31:02.66 But, you know, you have to keep in mind, 00:31:02.69\00:31:05.39 Cyrus would go on during his time 00:31:05.43\00:31:07.50 that God would raise him up to do this mighty work 00:31:07.53\00:31:10.07 of redemption for the children of Israel. 00:31:10.10\00:31:13.47 Cyrus would go on to defeat nations like the Medes. 00:31:13.50\00:31:16.00 And, of course, he would create an alliance with the Medes, 00:31:16.04\00:31:17.87 but he overcome the Medes, Lydia, and most of Asia Minor, 00:31:17.91\00:31:21.68 Babylon, Syria, all of the kingdoms of Palestine, 00:31:21.71\00:31:25.31 and even parts of the Iranian Peninsula, 00:31:25.35\00:31:28.22 and even parts of India. 00:31:28.25\00:31:29.85 This guy had a very powerful, powerful empire. 00:31:29.88\00:31:33.42 And it was all because the Lord had called him 00:31:33.46\00:31:35.06 and the Lord had set it in place, 00:31:35.09\00:31:36.86 that this was going to be the man 00:31:36.89\00:31:38.23 that he was going to raise up 00:31:38.26\00:31:39.59 to do this redemptive work for Israel 00:31:39.63\00:31:41.53 and getting them out of Babylon, 00:31:41.56\00:31:43.50 out of that oppressive time. 00:31:43.53\00:31:45.47 And so, you just have to mention that 00:31:45.50\00:31:47.64 because that's a powerful point. 00:31:47.67\00:31:49.40 Also Isaiah 45:1, it goes on to say, 00:31:49.44\00:31:52.51 "To open before him the double doors, 00:31:52.54\00:31:56.18 so that the gates will not be shut." 00:31:56.21\00:31:58.41 Now I like to reference this because it's powerful. 00:31:58.45\00:32:00.72 Not only did God say, look, this is my man, Cyrus, 00:32:00.75\00:32:03.55 this is the guy that I'm calling. 00:32:03.59\00:32:04.92 Cyrus is my man. 00:32:04.95\00:32:06.29 I'm calling him 150 years before he even shows up 00:32:06.32\00:32:08.86 on the scene. 00:32:08.89\00:32:10.23 But not only did he say 00:32:10.26\00:32:11.59 his name and identify who it is, 00:32:11.63\00:32:12.96 He's going to use when He told him 00:32:12.99\00:32:14.33 exactly how He's going to do it. 00:32:14.36\00:32:15.70 That's right. 00:32:15.73\00:32:17.07 It's powerful when you consider the story of what transpired 00:32:17.10\00:32:19.33 on and history actually gives us a date, 00:32:19.37\00:32:21.30 October 13, 539 BC, 00:32:21.34\00:32:24.44 and you can read it in Daniel Chapter 5. 00:32:24.47\00:32:26.84 You've read the story of the handwriting on the wall, 00:32:26.88\00:32:29.58 when God delivers the message through Daniel 00:32:29.61\00:32:31.81 the prophet to the kingdom of Babylon. 00:32:31.85\00:32:34.68 Belshazzar is having a horrible apostate feast 00:32:34.72\00:32:37.49 where he's just shaking his fist 00:32:37.52\00:32:38.95 in the face of the Lord. 00:32:38.99\00:32:40.32 And the Lord says, "YOU know what, I had enough. 00:32:40.36\00:32:41.86 This very night, you will be found wanted, 00:32:41.89\00:32:43.93 you have been weighed in the balances, 00:32:43.96\00:32:45.29 you have been called out and right now you don't know, 00:32:45.33\00:32:47.33 but right outside these walls, these powerful massive walls, 00:32:47.36\00:32:51.03 I have called a man by the name Cyrus, 00:32:51.07\00:32:53.27 the Medes and the Persians are at your gate, 00:32:53.30\00:32:55.57 and not only this, 00:32:55.60\00:32:56.94 but it's how it happened history records, 00:32:56.97\00:32:59.01 then of course, they diverted the River Euphrates. 00:32:59.04\00:33:01.14 So it actually goes back to what we read 00:33:01.18\00:33:03.11 in the latter verses of Isaiah 44, 00:33:03.14\00:33:05.91 where it talks about who says the deep be dry, 00:33:05.95\00:33:08.82 and I'll dry up your rivers. 00:33:08.85\00:33:10.29 That's exactly what He did to the River Euphrates. 00:33:10.32\00:33:13.12 They ran right through Babylon. 00:33:13.15\00:33:14.86 Using Cyrus' army, 00:33:14.89\00:33:16.46 they diverted the River Euphrates, 00:33:16.49\00:33:18.36 and they went right through those two gates 00:33:18.39\00:33:20.40 that were underneath the wall, 00:33:20.43\00:33:21.76 so that they could go in and take Babylon that night. 00:33:21.80\00:33:24.63 Why is that important to emphasize? 00:33:24.67\00:33:26.43 Because God said it, and it happened. 00:33:26.47\00:33:28.47 That's right. Amen. 00:33:28.50\00:33:29.84 Hundred and fifty years before it happened, 00:33:29.87\00:33:32.57 God had already declared it. 00:33:32.61\00:33:35.48 I think of also Isaiah 44:28. 00:33:35.51\00:33:37.95 Look up here in Isaiah 44:28. 00:33:37.98\00:33:40.28 It says, "Who says to Cyrus, 'He is My shepherd, 00:33:40.32\00:33:42.82 he shall perform all My pleasure, 00:33:42.85\00:33:44.29 saying to Jerusalem, 'You shall be built,' 00:33:44.32\00:33:46.76 and to the temple, 00:33:46.79\00:33:48.12 'Your foundation shall be laid.'" 00:33:48.16\00:33:49.72 If you go back to Ezra Chapter 1. 00:33:49.76\00:33:52.03 Again, it was through Cyrus 00:33:52.06\00:33:54.66 coming out of that Babylonian captivity of 70 years, 00:33:54.70\00:33:57.60 God used Cyrus to tell the people look, 00:33:57.63\00:34:00.17 go home, build your temple. 00:34:00.20\00:34:01.97 In fact, he gave an official decree, 00:34:02.00\00:34:03.64 I release you, I let you go, go home. 00:34:03.67\00:34:06.11 And God has told me. 00:34:06.14\00:34:07.71 And you can read right there in Ezra 1, 00:34:07.74\00:34:09.28 God has told me to tell you to start building, 00:34:09.31\00:34:12.05 rebuilding your temple. 00:34:12.08\00:34:13.68 So again, prophecy is sure in declaring this. 00:34:13.72\00:34:16.92 With the closing moments I have, 00:34:16.95\00:34:18.29 I want to address this anointed. 00:34:18.32\00:34:20.09 Because the word here in the original Hebrew 00:34:20.12\00:34:22.12 is the word mashach, which means the anointed one, 00:34:22.16\00:34:25.66 it's where we get Messiah. 00:34:25.69\00:34:27.26 And so we have to make this clear, 00:34:27.30\00:34:29.63 he's not Messiah in the sense of Jesus as the Messiah. 00:34:29.66\00:34:33.90 Okay, Messiah, of course, being anointed one, 00:34:33.94\00:34:36.27 the chosen one, Jesus, of course, 00:34:36.30\00:34:38.37 was the ultimate number one Messiah, 00:34:38.41\00:34:41.04 that God would choose to deliver His people from sin. 00:34:41.08\00:34:44.38 So he would do some of the things 00:34:44.41\00:34:45.91 that the Messiah would do such as defeat God's enemies 00:34:45.95\00:34:48.35 and release His captive people, 00:34:48.38\00:34:51.19 but he would not be the same as the Davidic Messiah, 00:34:51.22\00:34:55.02 because he is not Jewish 00:34:55.06\00:34:56.79 and does not come from the line of David. 00:34:56.83\00:35:00.36 And it's powerful to even consider 00:35:00.40\00:35:02.06 all of this because history records 00:35:02.10\00:35:05.13 and confirms all of this. 00:35:05.17\00:35:06.53 You have the Bible, Pastor, you mentioned 00:35:06.57\00:35:07.90 in one of the previous lessons, we have the Bible, 00:35:07.94\00:35:09.74 the Bible is sure but even the secular pages of history 00:35:09.77\00:35:13.17 confirm every bit of this and what it is saying. 00:35:13.21\00:35:15.68 And I'm thinking hereof, there's actually something 00:35:15.71\00:35:17.58 called this Cyrus Cylinder, 00:35:17.61\00:35:19.41 you can find it over in a museum in London, 00:35:19.45\00:35:21.55 that actually confirms that on the night, 00:35:21.58\00:35:23.32 or in the year that he took Babylon that is Cyrus, 00:35:23.35\00:35:25.62 he created a cylinder. 00:35:25.65\00:35:26.99 He wrote all of this stuff down, 00:35:27.02\00:35:28.36 and it's confirmed that indeed God called this man. 00:35:28.39\00:35:31.59 He did the work that God called him to do. 00:35:31.63\00:35:33.76 And you know what? 00:35:33.80\00:35:35.13 The lesson we can learn from this 00:35:35.16\00:35:36.56 is we can trust in God. 00:35:36.60\00:35:38.03 We can trust in His Word. 00:35:38.07\00:35:39.40 When God speaks, things happen, and praise the Lord 00:35:39.43\00:35:42.20 for His work and for His prophets. 00:35:42.24\00:35:43.91 Amen. Amen and Amen. 00:35:43.94\00:35:46.01 You know, it's very interesting that the fact that 00:35:46.04\00:35:50.65 the Bible accurately presents 00:35:50.68\00:35:53.45 what will happen before it happens 00:35:53.48\00:35:55.28 disturbs some people. 00:35:55.32\00:35:57.09 This is why we take the time for Wednesday's lesson 00:35:57.12\00:36:00.92 to bring about some things that have happened among people 00:36:00.96\00:36:05.29 that are studying the Book of Isaiah. 00:36:05.33\00:36:07.66 The fact that it is so accurate that the Lord saw it before, 00:36:07.70\00:36:12.13 named Cyrus by name, 00:36:12.17\00:36:13.74 and exactly what God said will happen happened. 00:36:13.77\00:36:17.21 It's disturbing to people, 00:36:17.24\00:36:18.57 they don't know what to do with it. 00:36:18.61\00:36:19.94 So they come up with theories to try to explain away 00:36:19.97\00:36:24.41 what the Bible says. 00:36:24.45\00:36:26.05 God is powerful. 00:36:26.08\00:36:28.08 He sees the end from the beginning. 00:36:28.12\00:36:32.02 And because He does this, people began to come up 00:36:32.05\00:36:35.62 with theories like, oh, it must have been somebody 00:36:35.66\00:36:38.46 that was living during the time of Cyrus 00:36:38.49\00:36:40.66 that wrote Isaiah Chapter 42 to Chapter 66. 00:36:40.70\00:36:45.33 It had to be somebody else because 00:36:45.37\00:36:46.70 it is just too accurate. 00:36:46.74\00:36:49.50 And people have come up with ideas. 00:36:49.54\00:36:52.87 And there are scholars 00:36:52.91\00:36:54.84 even today that are saying, well, 00:36:54.88\00:36:57.81 maybe there's, there are three divisions, 00:36:57.85\00:36:59.41 some are even calling three divisions, 00:36:59.45\00:37:00.85 which I'll mention in a moment. 00:37:00.88\00:37:03.72 But consider, people say that there's a second Isaiah 00:37:03.75\00:37:10.33 that wrote Chapter 40 through Chapter 66. 00:37:10.36\00:37:14.26 But there is no historical records, 00:37:14.30\00:37:16.83 no biblical records, 00:37:16.87\00:37:18.20 no historical records that identifies a second Isaiah. 00:37:18.23\00:37:22.60 This is the... 00:37:22.64\00:37:23.97 There's only one Isaiah in the Bible. 00:37:24.01\00:37:26.24 And that is something that we're going to read 00:37:26.27\00:37:28.34 in a moment. 00:37:28.38\00:37:31.41 I want to point out that, interestingly enough, 00:37:31.45\00:37:33.98 when they discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls, 00:37:34.02\00:37:38.85 one of the better preserved scrolls 00:37:38.89\00:37:41.86 was the scroll of Isaiah. 00:37:41.89\00:37:43.66 And there is no division 00:37:43.69\00:37:45.99 from Chapter 39 through Chapter 40. 00:37:46.03\00:37:49.10 And it just continues. 00:37:49.13\00:37:51.77 And so their devil has tried to destroy 00:37:51.80\00:37:55.00 the credibility of the Bible, and the prophecies of the Bible 00:37:55.04\00:38:00.08 so that people will lose faith and hope in the Bible. 00:38:00.11\00:38:03.65 I want to tell you that what God says happen. 00:38:03.68\00:38:06.35 There are individuals that say, "Well, no, 00:38:06.38\00:38:08.75 there had to be three different times." 00:38:08.78\00:38:11.19 From Isaiah Chapter 1 to 39, they say, "Well, 00:38:11.22\00:38:14.22 this is the Proto-Isaiah, 00:38:14.26\00:38:16.22 containing the words of the original Isaiah. 00:38:16.26\00:38:18.93 Chapter 42 to 45, this is the Deutero-Isaiah, 00:38:18.96\00:38:21.66 the work of an anonymous exilic author. 00:38:21.70\00:38:24.77 Then there's somebody comes along, said, 00:38:24.80\00:38:26.23 "Well, Chapter 56 through 66 is the Trito-Isaiah, 00:38:26.27\00:38:31.11 which is they consider it an anthology 00:38:31.14\00:38:32.97 of about 12 passages. 00:38:33.01\00:38:35.48 All of this is to divert attention 00:38:35.51\00:38:38.75 from the reliability of what the Bible says, 00:38:38.78\00:38:42.02 focus on the message of Isaiah, and you will be blessed. 00:38:42.05\00:38:47.12 Now notice how the Book of Isaiah begins. 00:38:47.16\00:38:49.62 Isaiah 1:1 says, 00:38:49.66\00:38:52.63 "The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem 00:38:52.66\00:38:56.30 that Isaiah the son of Amoz 00:38:56.33\00:38:58.50 saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, 00:38:58.53\00:39:02.34 and Hezekiah, kings of Judah." 00:39:02.37\00:39:04.87 This is what the Bible says, we can trust in that. 00:39:04.91\00:39:08.64 And so, now let's go over to the New Testament, 00:39:08.68\00:39:11.41 so that we can get a testimony from Peter, 00:39:11.45\00:39:14.55 2 Peter 1:19-21 helps us to understand 00:39:14.58\00:39:21.02 that we can trust in the Holy Scriptures. 00:39:21.06\00:39:24.66 And so, we have this, and so, 00:39:24.69\00:39:26.80 we have the prophetic word confirmed. 00:39:26.83\00:39:29.50 I like the way the King James says, 00:39:29.53\00:39:30.87 "We have a more sure word of prophecy, 00:39:30.90\00:39:34.44 which you do well to heed as a light that shines 00:39:34.47\00:39:37.84 in a dark place, until the day dawns, 00:39:37.87\00:39:40.81 and the morning star rises in your hearts: 00:39:40.84\00:39:43.88 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture 00:39:43.91\00:39:47.82 is of any private interpretation. 00:39:47.85\00:39:50.62 For prophecy never came by the will of man: 00:39:50.65\00:39:54.59 but holy men of God spoke 00:39:54.62\00:39:57.99 as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." 00:39:58.03\00:40:00.96 The Book of Isaiah Chapter 1 through Chapter 66 00:40:01.00\00:40:04.93 is the work of the Holy Spirit of God. 00:40:04.97\00:40:08.37 We can trust in the Book of Isaiah 00:40:08.40\00:40:10.91 as a book divinely inspired. 00:40:10.94\00:40:14.18 Now, I want to also bring about 00:40:14.21\00:40:17.85 this interesting thing that Jesus says, 00:40:17.88\00:40:19.85 why are these prophecies there? Why are they? 00:40:19.88\00:40:22.42 Why are they there in Isaiah? 00:40:22.45\00:40:23.79 Why are they there in the other books of the Bible, 00:40:23.82\00:40:26.29 in Daniel and Revelation? 00:40:26.32\00:40:27.89 Why are they there? 00:40:27.92\00:40:29.52 The same thing Jesus said in John 14:28-29, 00:40:29.56\00:40:33.80 concerning things that would happen to him, 00:40:33.83\00:40:35.50 the principle is there. 00:40:35.53\00:40:37.23 Notice what Jesus said, "You have heard Me say to you, 00:40:37.27\00:40:41.60 'I am going away and coming back to you.' 00:40:41.64\00:40:45.31 If you loved Me, you would rejoice 00:40:45.34\00:40:47.28 because I said, 'I am going to the Father,' 00:40:47.31\00:40:49.74 for My Father is greater than I." 00:40:49.78\00:40:51.55 And now notice what Jesus says, 00:40:51.58\00:40:53.52 "And now I have told you before it comes, 00:40:53.55\00:40:57.25 that when it does come to pass, you may believe." 00:40:57.29\00:41:02.12 So I say to you the Bible prophecies are there, 00:41:02.16\00:41:06.76 so that when God's children see the prophecies 00:41:06.80\00:41:09.90 and see the fulfillment of the prophecies, 00:41:09.93\00:41:12.23 their faith can be increased, 00:41:12.27\00:41:14.17 and believed that the things that have not yet come to pass 00:41:14.20\00:41:17.61 will come to pass. 00:41:17.64\00:41:20.31 And this is also brought out in Isaiah. 00:41:20.34\00:41:22.41 So let's go to Isaiah Chapter 42. 00:41:22.44\00:41:24.78 And we're going to go to verses 8 and 9. 00:41:24.81\00:41:27.32 Isaiah 42:8-9. 00:41:27.35\00:41:29.98 Notice what the Bible says, "I am the Lord, " 00:41:30.02\00:41:34.69 actually it says Jehovah, 00:41:34.72\00:41:36.06 "I am the Lord, that is My name, 00:41:36.09\00:41:38.09 and My glory I will not give to another, 00:41:38.13\00:41:41.50 nor My praise to carved images. 00:41:41.53\00:41:45.17 Behold, the former things have come to pass, 00:41:45.20\00:41:49.04 and new things I declare, 00:41:49.07\00:41:51.11 before they spring forth I tell you of them.' " 00:41:51.14\00:41:55.54 So, friends, brothers and sisters, 00:41:55.58\00:41:58.31 you can trust the prophecies. 00:41:58.35\00:42:00.85 When you look at Revelation, 00:42:00.88\00:42:02.58 and it talks about that there say, 00:42:02.62\00:42:04.72 a mark of the beast coming, 00:42:04.75\00:42:06.49 the mark of the beast is coming and will be here soon. 00:42:06.52\00:42:10.36 When you look at the prophecies of Revelation, 00:42:10.39\00:42:12.16 Daniel and Revelation, 00:42:12.19\00:42:13.53 that things that have not yet come to pass will come to pass. 00:42:13.56\00:42:17.27 You can trust in God's Word. 00:42:17.30\00:42:19.13 Now, the basic message of Isaiah 00:42:19.17\00:42:22.17 is consistent throughout the whole book. 00:42:22.20\00:42:25.24 Trust God with all of your heart, 00:42:25.27\00:42:27.74 including His messianic deliverer. 00:42:27.78\00:42:30.25 This is what the lesson brings out, 00:42:30.28\00:42:31.68 rather than other powers and people that come up 00:42:31.71\00:42:33.88 with theories to explain away what the Bible says. 00:42:33.92\00:42:37.32 Trust in the power. 00:42:37.35\00:42:38.69 Yes, you can read the Book of Isaiah 00:42:38.72\00:42:40.69 and you will notice there seems to be a shift in focus 00:42:40.72\00:42:44.26 when you get to Chapter 39 and enter into Chapter 40 00:42:44.29\00:42:47.16 and onward, because Chapter 1 through 39 emphasize judgment, 00:42:47.20\00:42:52.27 because of the sin of the people of Israel. 00:42:52.30\00:42:55.14 And then Isaiah 42 through 66 emphasize 00:42:55.17\00:42:58.17 the consolation that you can expect to come from the Lord. 00:42:58.21\00:43:03.65 But if you read from Isaiah Chapter 1, 00:43:03.68\00:43:06.48 you will notice that there are messages chapter after chapter 00:43:06.51\00:43:10.65 where God is comforting His people, 00:43:10.69\00:43:13.49 helping His people to understand 00:43:13.52\00:43:15.32 that His mercy is great. 00:43:15.36\00:43:17.39 And notice, I want to point out a few, 00:43:17.43\00:43:19.63 a few places where this is brought out. 00:43:19.66\00:43:23.26 There are at least five places where God is telling you, 00:43:23.30\00:43:27.64 this is the judgment I am bringing out 00:43:27.67\00:43:29.44 because of your sin. 00:43:29.47\00:43:31.34 But then it says while He's sending out the judgment, 00:43:31.37\00:43:33.91 the punishment, His hand is stretched out still. 00:43:33.94\00:43:36.38 Notice, I will go to Isaiah 5:24-25, 00:43:36.41\00:43:40.78 "Therefore, 00:43:40.82\00:43:42.48 as the fire devours the stubble, 00:43:42.52\00:43:45.52 and the flame consumes the chaff, 00:43:45.55\00:43:47.59 so their root will be as rottenness, 00:43:47.62\00:43:50.89 and their blossom will ascend like dust, 00:43:50.93\00:43:52.99 because they have rejected the law of the Lord of hosts, 00:43:53.03\00:43:57.10 and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel." 00:43:57.13\00:44:00.54 Notice, verse 25, 00:44:00.57\00:44:02.00 "Therefore the anger of the Lord is aroused 00:44:02.04\00:44:04.97 against His people, He has stretched out His hand 00:44:05.01\00:44:07.91 against them and stricken them, and the hills trembled. 00:44:07.94\00:44:12.68 Their carcasses were as refuse in the midst of the streets." 00:44:12.71\00:44:17.49 Notice, "For all this His anger is not turned away, 00:44:17.52\00:44:21.72 but His hand is stretched out still." 00:44:21.76\00:44:25.69 His hand of mercies stretched out still. 00:44:25.73\00:44:28.36 Notice Isaiah 9:12, 00:44:28.40\00:44:31.30 "The Syrians before and the Philistines behind, 00:44:31.33\00:44:35.47 and they shall devour Israel with an open mouth. 00:44:35.50\00:44:39.47 For all this His anger is not turned away, 00:44:39.51\00:44:43.24 but His hand is stretched out still." 00:44:43.28\00:44:46.18 So you see, while God is sending out this judgment, 00:44:46.21\00:44:49.05 these are judgment or punishments, 00:44:49.08\00:44:51.45 so that they will understand that they need to repent. 00:44:51.49\00:44:55.06 And if they repent, 00:44:55.09\00:44:56.76 God promises to have mercy upon them. 00:44:56.79\00:44:59.76 You can read Isaiah 9:17, Isaiah 9:21, Isaiah 10:4, 00:44:59.79\00:45:04.43 and you will see again God speaking of the judgment 00:45:04.47\00:45:07.74 that they will have to go through. 00:45:07.77\00:45:09.47 And again it says, 00:45:09.50\00:45:10.84 "For all this His anger is not turned away, 00:45:10.87\00:45:12.77 but His hand is stretched out still." 00:45:12.81\00:45:15.74 So why are these things there? 00:45:15.78\00:45:18.21 These things were written for our admonition. 00:45:18.25\00:45:21.98 You can learn by reading the Book of Isaiah, 00:45:22.02\00:45:23.92 how God deals with His people, how He is merciful, 00:45:23.95\00:45:27.32 and brings them hope. 00:45:27.36\00:45:29.12 There's hope for us in the future. 00:45:29.16\00:45:31.76 So I encourage you to take heed to the words of Isaiah. 00:45:31.79\00:45:35.03 The Book of Isaiah is delightful. 00:45:35.06\00:45:37.30 You can see a God of love and a God of mercy. 00:45:37.33\00:45:40.34 And I encourage you to read it, 00:45:40.37\00:45:42.60 asking the Lord to help you understand it. 00:45:42.64\00:45:45.91 Amen and amen. 00:45:45.94\00:45:47.28 Thank you so much, my brother, get this off. 00:45:47.31\00:45:50.61 Okay, I'm excited. 00:45:50.65\00:45:52.48 I have Thursday's lesson, 00:45:52.51\00:45:54.55 "A Feeling and Suffering Servant." 00:45:54.58\00:45:59.02 And this is the second, 00:45:59.05\00:46:01.42 Jill read the first of the four servant songs 00:46:01.46\00:46:04.19 that are in Isaiah, this is the second one, 00:46:04.23\00:46:07.10 and it tells of the Messiah's mission 00:46:07.13\00:46:11.97 and His spiritual success. 00:46:12.00\00:46:14.90 You know, we're going to see 00:46:14.94\00:46:16.27 as we're reading through verses 1 through 7, 00:46:16.30\00:46:18.41 it is clear that this is speaking of an individual 00:46:18.44\00:46:22.41 that is distinct from this nation servant 00:46:22.44\00:46:26.51 as John was talking about earlier. 00:46:26.55\00:46:28.92 So this servant is none other than the Lord Jesus. 00:46:28.95\00:46:33.09 Isaiah 49:1, "Listen, O coastlands, to Me, 00:46:33.12\00:46:37.46 and take heed, you peoples from afar! 00:46:37.49\00:46:40.60 The Lord has called Me from the womb, 00:46:40.63\00:46:43.47 from the matrix of My mother 00:46:43.50\00:46:46.23 He has made mention of My name." 00:46:46.27\00:46:50.44 The Messiah servant was to be 00:46:50.47\00:46:54.18 a human being born of a virgin woman. 00:46:54.21\00:46:58.41 And He was chosen, the Bible tells us 00:46:58.45\00:47:01.72 from the foundation of the world. 00:47:01.75\00:47:03.72 Before the foundations of the world, 00:47:03.75\00:47:05.82 He was the Lamb slain 00:47:05.85\00:47:08.19 from the foundation of the world 00:47:08.22\00:47:09.92 is what Revelation 13:8 says. 00:47:09.96\00:47:14.10 In the New Testament, we see 00:47:14.13\00:47:17.07 that the angel told Joseph and Mary, 00:47:17.10\00:47:20.24 that His name was to be Jesus. 00:47:20.27\00:47:24.21 So He was named while in the womb. 00:47:24.24\00:47:27.81 Verse 2. 00:47:27.84\00:47:29.18 And the reason He was supposed to be named Jesus 00:47:29.21\00:47:31.25 is because He would save the people 00:47:31.28\00:47:33.68 from their sins, 00:47:33.72\00:47:35.12 not in their sins, from their sins. 00:47:35.15\00:47:37.55 Verse 2, Isaiah 49:2, 00:47:37.59\00:47:41.16 "He has made My mouth like a sharp sword, 00:47:41.19\00:47:45.13 in the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, 00:47:45.16\00:47:49.10 and made Me a polished shaft, 00:47:49.13\00:47:53.10 in His quiver He has hidden Me." 00:47:53.13\00:47:57.04 I love this. 00:47:57.07\00:47:58.41 He has given power to this servant, 00:47:58.44\00:48:02.74 to speak the words of a life 00:48:02.78\00:48:05.51 that would pierce hardened hearts 00:48:05.55\00:48:08.92 with a good news of the gospel that would wage war 00:48:08.95\00:48:12.85 against the chaos in this world and conquer his enemies. 00:48:12.89\00:48:16.96 I think of Him in Revelation 00:48:16.99\00:48:19.19 when it's first introducing Him in Revelation, 00:48:19.23\00:48:22.16 that He had this two edged sword, 00:48:22.20\00:48:24.33 and then also in Revelation 19, 00:48:24.37\00:48:27.34 where it talks about he has a mouth 00:48:27.37\00:48:30.17 and it's like a two edged sword. 00:48:30.21\00:48:32.81 And, you know, it is precious to me that when He returns, 00:48:32.84\00:48:39.31 it's His words that are really gonna be the judge. 00:48:39.35\00:48:43.45 Now, when it says that He has hidden me, what did that say? 00:48:43.49\00:48:48.42 Let me see. He has hidden me. 00:48:48.46\00:48:51.09 That's, we know that the Bible says, 00:48:51.13\00:48:54.20 until the fullness of time, 00:48:54.23\00:48:56.40 and when it was the fullness of time, 00:48:56.43\00:48:58.73 this is the time prophecy from Daniel. 00:48:58.77\00:49:02.30 So now let's look at Isaiah 49:3, 00:49:02.34\00:49:05.04 "He said to me, 'You are My servant, 00:49:05.07\00:49:07.58 O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.' " 00:49:07.61\00:49:11.25 Well, wait a minute, is this the Messiah 00:49:11.28\00:49:13.65 or is this the nation Israel? 00:49:13.68\00:49:15.22 Why would he call the servant Israel 00:49:15.25\00:49:19.49 if he's referring to the Messiah? 00:49:19.52\00:49:21.79 Well, there's plenty of overlap 00:49:21.82\00:49:23.16 between this and the one in Isaiah 42. 00:49:23.19\00:49:27.76 We've already identified him as the Messiah. 00:49:27.80\00:49:32.17 But the interesting thing is, in Exodus 4:22, 00:49:32.20\00:49:37.61 God said, 00:49:37.64\00:49:39.64 when He's sending Moses, he said, "Go to your Pharaoh. 00:49:39.67\00:49:43.24 Thus says Lord, 00:49:43.28\00:49:45.05 Israel is My Son, my firstborn." 00:49:45.08\00:49:50.22 Both the word son and firstborn are covenant terms. 00:49:50.25\00:49:57.13 And so then Jesus... 00:49:57.16\00:50:00.20 became the covenant Son of God. 00:50:00.23\00:50:04.50 God came down, became a man 00:50:04.53\00:50:06.87 and became the covenant Son of God. 00:50:06.90\00:50:10.97 And He embodies all that Israel 00:50:11.01\00:50:15.51 was meant to be as God's firstborn son. 00:50:15.54\00:50:20.82 So verse 4, this is now the servant speaking, 00:50:20.85\00:50:25.69 this is interesting. 00:50:25.72\00:50:27.49 "Then I said, 'I have labored in vain, 00:50:27.52\00:50:29.49 I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain, 00:50:29.52\00:50:32.56 yet surely my just reward is with the Lord, 00:50:32.59\00:50:36.36 and my work with my God.' " 00:50:36.40\00:50:38.17 You know, Jesus met with rejection 00:50:38.20\00:50:43.07 by national Israel, 00:50:43.10\00:50:45.41 but He still had a strong assurance 00:50:45.44\00:50:49.14 that His work was going to be rewarded with success. 00:50:49.18\00:50:53.11 And I love this quote, it's in our quarterly. 00:50:53.15\00:50:56.25 It's from the book, a prophecy of Isaiah by J. Alec Motyer. 00:50:56.28\00:51:02.19 And it says, "Isaiah foresaw a servant 00:51:02.22\00:51:05.69 with the real human nature, tested like we are, 00:51:05.73\00:51:09.23 proving himself to be the author and perfecter 00:51:09.26\00:51:12.20 of the way of faith, 00:51:12.23\00:51:13.70 a real personal faith that can still say, My God, 00:51:13.74\00:51:20.54 when nothing any longer seems worthwhile." 00:51:20.58\00:51:25.88 So Jesus was made in all ways like we are, 00:51:25.91\00:51:29.95 it was, it's about the truth. 00:51:29.98\00:51:31.92 Isaiah 49:5, continuing on in this servant song. 00:51:31.95\00:51:37.46 It says, "Now says the Lord, 00:51:37.49\00:51:40.43 who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, 00:51:40.46\00:51:42.96 to bring Jacob back to Him." 00:51:43.00\00:51:46.50 Now, that is referring to the nation of Israel. 00:51:46.53\00:51:49.74 "So that Israel is gathered to Him, 00:51:49.77\00:51:54.38 for I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, 00:51:54.41\00:51:56.64 My God shall be My strength.' " 00:51:56.68\00:51:59.11 The servant, 00:51:59.15\00:52:01.32 this individual servant is the agent 00:52:01.35\00:52:04.82 of national Israel's restoration. 00:52:04.85\00:52:07.72 So there's no question here. 00:52:07.76\00:52:10.16 And you know, the restoration of the nation of Israel 00:52:10.19\00:52:13.66 was the first priority. 00:52:13.70\00:52:16.46 Remember, when Jesus came, 00:52:16.50\00:52:18.00 that was the first priority of His mission. 00:52:18.03\00:52:20.20 He said, I've come for the children of God, 00:52:20.24\00:52:23.74 but wasn't limited to the tribes of Jacob. 00:52:23.77\00:52:27.81 Look what he says in verse 6, "Indeed He says, 00:52:27.84\00:52:31.75 'It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant 00:52:31.78\00:52:36.52 to raise up the tribes of Jacob, 00:52:36.55\00:52:38.89 and to restore the preserved ones of Israel, 00:52:38.92\00:52:42.16 I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, 00:52:42.19\00:52:47.70 that You should be My servant to the ends of the earth.' " 00:52:47.73\00:52:51.03 Hallelujah! 00:52:51.07\00:52:52.40 You go on in verses 5, I mean here in verses 5 and 6. 00:52:52.43\00:52:56.40 We see He is a single individual 00:52:56.44\00:52:58.44 that gathers Israel back. 00:52:58.47\00:53:00.88 But He is God in the person of Jesus Christ, 00:53:00.91\00:53:04.45 and He wants all men to be saved. 00:53:04.48\00:53:06.48 He came not merely as a savior for the nation of Israel, 00:53:06.51\00:53:12.42 that would be too small a thing. 00:53:12.45\00:53:14.96 God ordained that all would come, 00:53:14.99\00:53:18.89 all would come to know Him. 00:53:18.93\00:53:21.23 This is fulfilling, you know, actually, ah, 00:53:21.26\00:53:24.80 I think I'm running out of time. 00:53:24.83\00:53:26.17 But when you think about this, God's covenant, 00:53:26.20\00:53:29.90 we see throughout the Bible, 00:53:29.94\00:53:32.07 a progressive unveiling of God's covenant, 00:53:32.11\00:53:36.61 it's introduced in Genesis 3:15. 00:53:36.64\00:53:39.28 Then God makes this covenant with Abraham. 00:53:39.31\00:53:44.15 And then He does it with Jacob, or Isaac and Jacob, 00:53:44.19\00:53:49.29 and it just keeps going on. 00:53:49.32\00:53:51.86 But God intends for all to be blessed. 00:53:51.89\00:53:58.10 With justification by faith, Abraham believed God 00:53:58.13\00:54:02.64 it was credited to him as righteousness. 00:54:02.67\00:54:05.61 Our righteousness is nothing but filthy rags before Him, 00:54:05.64\00:54:08.51 but He credits us with Christ's righteousness. 00:54:08.54\00:54:11.91 Verse 7, Isaiah 49, "Thus says the Lord, 00:54:11.95\00:54:14.88 the Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, 00:54:14.92\00:54:17.55 to Him whom man despises." 00:54:17.59\00:54:20.06 He was despised and abhorred. 00:54:20.09\00:54:22.12 They treated him with humiliating treatment, 00:54:22.16\00:54:26.86 Jesus Christ. 00:54:26.90\00:54:28.23 "To the Servant of rulers: 'Kings shall see and arise, 00:54:28.26\00:54:32.53 princes also shall worship, 00:54:32.57\00:54:34.80 because of the Lord who is faithful, 00:54:34.84\00:54:36.84 the Holy One of Israel, He has chosen You.' " 00:54:36.87\00:54:40.41 So there will be a reversal. 00:54:40.44\00:54:42.74 Every knee will bow before him. 00:54:42.78\00:54:45.38 And verse 8, "Thus says the Lord" Isaiah 49:8, 00:54:45.41\00:54:50.19 "In an acceptable time I have heard You, 00:54:50.22\00:54:52.69 and in the day of salvation I have helped You, 00:54:52.72\00:54:55.52 I will preserve You and give You as a covenant 00:54:55.56\00:54:58.83 to the people, to restore the earth, 00:54:58.86\00:55:02.46 to cause them to inherit 00:55:02.50\00:55:05.33 the desolate heritages. 00:55:05.37\00:55:09.60 Jesus is the everlasting covenant. 00:55:09.64\00:55:11.57 Hebrews 13:20 talks about His blood 00:55:11.61\00:55:15.48 is the blood of the everlasting covenant. 00:55:15.51\00:55:18.68 So He is God's surety of God's promises to us 00:55:18.71\00:55:25.15 and He is from us to God, 00:55:25.19\00:55:27.32 the surety that we'll walk in obedience. 00:55:27.36\00:55:29.86 Amen. 00:55:29.89\00:55:31.23 Well, thank you, Shelley. 00:55:31.26\00:55:32.59 Thank you, Johnny. 00:55:32.63\00:55:33.96 Ryan and Jill, I'm gonna give each of you a chance 00:55:34.00\00:55:35.80 to summarize the day you covered 00:55:35.83\00:55:37.93 before we invite our audience to join us. 00:55:37.97\00:55:41.34 So I had Monday's lesson "Unnamed Individual Servant, " 00:55:41.37\00:55:44.67 which would be the first of the servant songs 00:55:44.71\00:55:47.34 there in Isaiah. 00:55:47.38\00:55:48.81 And to me what's so powerful as we study, 00:55:48.84\00:55:51.65 we see the Messiah 00:55:51.68\00:55:53.01 through the gospel prophet Isaiah there. 00:55:53.05\00:55:55.68 But what's so important is that we make a choice 00:55:55.72\00:55:58.85 to make Him Lord and Savior of our live. 00:55:58.89\00:56:01.09 We can study it and we can know it, 00:56:01.12\00:56:02.89 but I just invite you right now to make a choice 00:56:02.92\00:56:05.76 and ask this servant Messiah into your heart and life. 00:56:05.79\00:56:10.07 Amen. Ryan? 00:56:10.10\00:56:12.17 God chose Cyrus 00:56:12.20\00:56:14.74 as His anointed messiah for that time. 00:56:14.77\00:56:19.17 What I want to glean from that 00:56:19.21\00:56:20.54 and what I want to appeal to you today is, 00:56:20.58\00:56:22.68 you know, are you allowing Jesus, 00:56:22.71\00:56:24.38 the true Anointed Messiah 00:56:24.41\00:56:26.01 to anoint you with the oil of the Holy Spirit. 00:56:26.05\00:56:27.78 That's what I want today. 00:56:27.82\00:56:29.15 I want to be led and guided by the Lord. 00:56:29.18\00:56:30.95 We've been chosen to live in this time, 00:56:30.99\00:56:33.39 not just by coincidence, but God has chosen us, 00:56:33.42\00:56:36.52 and He wants to anoint us with His Holy Spirit. 00:56:36.56\00:56:38.26 So pray that the Lord will anoint you 00:56:38.29\00:56:40.70 with the leading, guiding power of His Spirit. 00:56:40.73\00:56:42.90 Amen. Amen. 00:56:42.93\00:56:45.40 Well, in... 00:56:45.43\00:56:47.70 Okay, in 2 Chronicles Chapter 20, 00:56:47.74\00:56:51.04 I'm just going to read the last part. 00:56:51.07\00:56:53.44 "Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established, 00:56:53.48\00:56:56.81 believe His prophets, and you shall prosper." 00:56:56.85\00:57:00.08 I encourage you to trust in God's Word. 00:57:00.12\00:57:02.78 It is a guide unto our feet, unto the end of time. 00:57:02.82\00:57:06.65 Thank you. 00:57:06.69\00:57:08.22 We look at Jesus' ministry, 00:57:08.26\00:57:09.69 He had plenty of reasons to be discouraged. 00:57:09.72\00:57:12.66 You know, remember, 00:57:12.69\00:57:14.03 He was perfectly human and He walked in humanity. 00:57:14.06\00:57:17.63 I mean, He was perfectly God, 00:57:17.67\00:57:19.00 but He walked in this human flesh, 00:57:19.03\00:57:22.70 but He stayed faithful. 00:57:22.74\00:57:24.07 And here's what I just want to remind you of 00:57:24.11\00:57:26.01 what Jesus knew is that 00:57:26.04\00:57:27.98 when God's people get in desperate situation, 00:57:28.01\00:57:30.88 God delivers them. Amen. 00:57:30.91\00:57:32.55 Amen. Amen. 00:58:04.68\00:58:06.01
