this point in time,

under Hezekiah, they
really had no military,

they were really,

they really couldn't fight.

And I'm so thankful God says,

I'll fight your battles for you,

that's good, isn't it?

According to 2 Kings 18
says, "Judah had no training,

they had no cavalry
as it were, no military,

and then all of a sudden

here was Assyria
trying to attack God's people

and through rumors.

I thought that
was very interesting.

They were actually telling lies.

They were saying
00:06:07.53\00:06:08.86
that God's people
were trying to attack them,

had to be very
careful with all these things.

So it gives them
excuse to go and get.

We hear a lot of
that today going on.

There's one side tells a story

side tells that story.

And all of a sudden, we
have to be very careful.

Jerusalem, though,

face a real terrible siege.

say to God's people,

"Listen, the only way
you're going to get out of this

is if you turn on the king."

I thought that was
kind of interesting.

A lot of times the
devil works that way,

doesn't he?

Trying to get us
to turn on one another

when we should be
shoulder to shoulder.

We should be working
together in the cause of God.

But the enemy tries
to divide and conquer

and certainly to separate here.

Now, we realize then,
since the king knew right then,

we realized that
something was going to happen.

A battle, his
people may be defeated,

a lot of death.

He put on sackcloth
and ashes, didn't he?

I wonder why they
put those things on

and went to the temple.

Number one, it was
a custom, was it not?

And I think he
was falling after.

I think it was Joel Chapter 1.

That's what Joel did
when he was in trouble.

And so now before
Hezekiah realized,

"I'm in trouble.

I'm in trouble.

And best thing I can
do," and I like this,

"is I need to seek God."

So when you're in trouble,
my brothers and sisters,

may I just say seek God.

That's right. Seek
God first, not everything.

because there
was a great crisis,

there's going to
be a lot of death,

We need good leadership.

a tremendous battle

belittled the God of heaven.

all the other gods.

So we're not
really worried about this.

But he realized

what was getting
ready to take place.

Hezekiah had tried
to encourage his people.

He tried to encourage them.

At some time

some of you who work
with people all the time,

and all of you do,

you try to encourage people
and there are just some you,

you just cannot encourage.

You know, you get
on the Word of God,

you pray with them,
you bolster them up,

and next day,
they're in the same,

we say same pickle,

you know, but anyway,
that's what we should be doing.

So Hezekiah, said,
"Man, I need to seek God.

I need to get, you know,

I need to bring
God into this thing.

So he sent a message of
encouragement to his people,

some accepted,
some didn't accepted,

kind of reminds me
of Joshua and Caleb,

you remember
that when they talked,

they were.

They said, "We want
to encourage the people.

Don't fear,

you have nothing
to fear with men.

You need to be,
you know, your courage

and your love needs
to be put toward God,

God's going to be.

Will be more than
conquerors through Him.

But sometime people
have a very difficult time,

we're going through.

the king of Assyria,

And Sennacherib
goes against Judah,

and this was about four
years after he became king,

kind of interesting.

He goes, he goes
against God's people,

because of
basically three reasons.

I'll give you
those three reasons.

Number one,

Hezekiah refused to
submit to the Assyrian yoke.

He just refused.

At some time, we
had to refuse to go

under a yoke or
bondage of things

we know that's not godly,

things that we know
that goes against God's Word.

Two, Hezekiah call for some help

with his neighbors
to go against the king

and the king
held that against him.

So maybe some of the
things we said or done.

Some people say, you know,
you're going to be in trouble

because you said certain things.

And I say, you know,

you can't get of
his truths, let it be.

That's right.

You know, and but he
went ahead and the king said,

"Ah, I remember that."

Number three, they had assisted

in the
Philistines in their uprising.

So they done several things
that the king didn't like,

and he said, we're
going to basically get

even with you,

Another problem of Hezekiah,

now refused to
pay tribute money.

And so they're
men of importance.

And here, they're
coming and telling all of this.

How did the officials,
how did Hezekiah respond?

We see in Isaiah
37:1, that when he hears,

Hezekiah hears this report,

rebelling against Assyria.

Now they're saying,
"Hey, off with your neck,

we're coming in for you.
00:27:54.40\00:27:55.77
Your God is no
match for our gods.
00:27:55.80\00:27:59.14
You can't do
anything about this.
00:27:59.17\00:28:01.64
So Hezekiah is shaken.

I mean, he's
disturbed and what does he do?

He tears his robe, he
puts on sackcloth and ashes.

And what this
is was symbolizing,

not just his grief,
00:28:15.12\00:28:16.89
but repentance and contrition,

then it goes into
the House of the Lord.

And you know,
the temple was known

as the house of prayer.

So how
appropriate was his response?

When we get disturbing
news, we may mourn for a while.

That's right.

But let's come to our senses
and get into the prayer mode.

So verse 2, what Hezekiah does

is he sends two
of his officials,

and then some of the senior
religious leaders, the elders.

He sends them to
the Prophet Isaiah,
00:28:51.23\00:28:56.16
because what he's going to
do, he wants Isaiah to pray.

And that was one
of the main functions
00:29:00.47\00:29:02.77
of a prophet's role,
00:29:02.80\00:29:04.74
was intercessory prayer.
00:29:04.77\00:29:06.91
So in verse 3, what
Hezekiah, I love this.

He compares his
dilemma to a mother
00:29:10.88\00:29:13.72
who's in labor of birth.
00:29:13.75\00:29:15.55
In other words,
what he's saying is,

"You know what?

I'm unable to, I mean,

I know Jerusalem
needs to be delivered,

but I'm helpless."

He said, "I'm like a mother,
who is in labor, but I've got,

I don't have the strength
to complete the delivery."

So here these
emissaries, go to Isaiah.

And they say,

"Hey, the Rabshakeh
have belittled the Lord.

They have equipped or
equated Him to pagan gods.

And they ask
Isaiah, they say therefore,

because of this insult,
00:29:52.99\00:29:55.26
lift up your prayer for
the remnant that is left.

What is the remnant?

Only Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is the only
part that remained unconquered.

So, listen, how God
speaks through Isaiah,

to encourage Hezekiah.

The message was
brief, but it was enough.

God's on the side of His people.

So Isaiah is predicting

going to hear a rumor,

distract him from his attack

That's exactly what happened.

Sennacherib sends Hezekiah
another threatening message,

he's not going to give up,

the devil doesn't
give up very easily.

He says, "Thus you shall
speak to Hezekiah king of Judah,
00:31:39.19\00:31:43.16
saying: 'Do not let your God
in whom you trust deceive you."

Has anyone ever said to you,
00:31:50.01\00:31:53.14
those promises of
God are not for you?
00:31:53.17\00:31:56.18
God's deceiving you?
00:31:56.21\00:31:58.15
Let me tell you something.

Every promise of God is
yes and amen in Christ Jesus.

Here in Jesus Christ, that's it.

He says, and now
this is Sennacherib,

Assyria, he says "Jerusalem."

the king of Assyria."

the kings of Assyria

have done to all the lands

by utterly destroying

of the nations delivered those."

He's talking about
those pagan nations,

those pagan gods.

Hey, in the past
did they delivered those

whom my fathers have destroyed,

Gozan, Haran and Rezeph,

and the people of
Eden who were in Telassar?"

So Sennacherib is comparing God,

the Creator God to mere idols.
00:32:51.57\00:32:55.47
And he's suggesting
00:32:55.50\00:32:57.31
that he's going to defeat
00:32:57.34\00:33:00.84
Yahweh's people
that Sennacherib,
00:33:00.88\00:33:02.94
he is saying, "Hey,
just like we defeated
00:33:02.98\00:33:05.11
all the rest of these people,
we're going to defeat you.
00:33:05.15\00:33:07.25
You can't rely on your God."
00:33:07.28\00:33:09.88
So you know what Hezekiah does?
00:33:09.92\00:33:11.39
To me, this is an
interesting comparison.

Let's look at Isaiah 37:15.

He's learned a lesson,
00:33:16.19\00:33:17.53
he's not going to sit
around and mourn anymore.
00:33:17.56\00:33:20.10
You know, before he mourned
and he put on the sackcloth.
00:33:20.13\00:33:24.57
And then he finally went
into the temple of the Lord.
00:33:24.60\00:33:27.10
This time he goes
directly to the temple of Lord,
00:33:27.14\00:33:30.31
and he spreads a
message out before the Lord.
00:33:30.34\00:33:33.24
And he says Isaiah 37:15,
00:33:33.27\00:33:35.14
Hezekiah prayed
to the Lord saying,
00:33:35.18\00:33:37.35
"O, Lord of
hosts, God of Israel,
00:33:37.38\00:33:40.75
the one who dwells
between the cherubim."
00:33:40.78\00:33:44.29
You know, he is speaking to God
00:33:44.32\00:33:48.22
as the sovereign
God of the whole world.
00:33:48.26\00:33:50.59
He says, "You are
the Lord of hosts,
00:33:50.63\00:33:53.40
the cherubim with the angelic,
00:33:53.43\00:33:55.60
powerful, angelic,
heavenly creatures."

And they were often represented
00:33:58.50\00:34:00.50
as being close to
his divine presence.

You remember, in
the Holy of Holies,

the Ark of the Covenant,

there were two cherubim

that were over the
throne where the mercy seats,

where Jesus, our God sat.

Well, that was what?

A copy of the heavenly so he...

Then listen to this.

He says, this is Isaiah,

"O Lord, You are God, You alone,

kingdoms of the earth.

You have made heaven and earth."

He's appealing to
Him as the creator,

"Incline Your
ear and hear, O Lord,

and see, hear all
the words of Sennacherib,

which he has sent to
reproach the living God."

And so, here Sennacherib,

the king of
Assyria is mocking God.

But boy, Isaiah is saying,

"Lord, stand up,
defend your honor."

Verse 18, "Truly,
Lord, the kings of Assyria, "

he's looking at history path,
00:35:01.30\00:35:03.03
"have laid waste
00:35:03.06\00:35:04.40
to all the
nations and their lands,
00:35:04.43\00:35:06.20
and have cast their gods,
00:35:06.23\00:35:08.20
their idols into the
fire, for they were not gods,
00:35:08.24\00:35:12.34
but the work of men's
hands, wood and stone.

Therefore you
have destroyed them.

Now therefore, O God," verse 20,

Hezekiah is appealing
to God based on His glory.

what we always pray,

This was the
highest motivation of all,

Jerusalem was for His glory.

And Hezekiah wants the world
to know that He alone is God.
