Amen. 00:02:59.51\00:03:01.14 Praise the Lord. We're glad you're here. 00:03:13.59\00:03:14.92 And Sister Jill Morikone on your left. 00:03:14.96\00:03:16.83 Always a pleasure. 00:03:16.86\00:03:18.23 Thank you, Pastor Kenny. 00:03:18.26\00:03:19.59 Always a joy to open up God's Word 00:03:19.63\00:03:21.23 and just study together. 00:03:21.26\00:03:22.60 I am excited about this lesson. 00:03:22.63\00:03:23.97 Yes, amen. 00:03:24.00\00:03:25.33 Okay, well, we know 00:03:25.37\00:03:26.70 we can't do anything without prayer. 00:03:26.74\00:03:28.07 Ain't that right? What do we do? 00:03:28.10\00:03:29.44 I jot down a couple of things. 00:03:29.47\00:03:30.81 Just a couple little words here, 00:03:30.84\00:03:32.17 Fundamentals of Education, 441. 00:03:32.21\00:03:34.24 It says, "Seek to know God through prayer. 00:03:34.28\00:03:39.28 Seek to know God through prayer." 00:03:39.31\00:03:40.82 So we're seeking to know Him 00:03:40.85\00:03:42.52 as we pray and as we study this lesson. 00:03:42.55\00:03:45.19 And then notice this message to young people, 53, 00:03:45.22\00:03:48.96 talks about the sound of prayer that the devils tremble, 00:03:48.99\00:03:53.40 at the sound of prayer the devils tremble. 00:03:53.43\00:03:56.77 But today, the devils are going to tremble 00:03:56.80\00:03:58.87 because we're going to have prayer. 00:03:58.90\00:04:00.24 Brother Ryan, what do you say? Let's do it. 00:04:00.27\00:04:01.60 Let's pray. Absolutely. 00:04:01.64\00:04:02.97 All right. 00:04:03.00\00:04:04.34 Father in heaven, Lord, 00:04:04.37\00:04:05.71 just as Brother Kenny just said, 00:04:05.74\00:04:07.08 we want to make some devils tremble. 00:04:07.11\00:04:08.44 Come on now. 00:04:08.48\00:04:09.81 Because we know that You 00:04:09.84\00:04:11.18 are more powerful than the devil. 00:04:11.21\00:04:12.55 Amen. 00:04:12.58\00:04:13.92 And, Lord, we want to thank You for this opportunity 00:04:13.95\00:04:15.28 that we have to be able to come together once more, 00:04:15.32\00:04:16.65 and be able to share Your Word to dissect it, 00:04:16.69\00:04:18.05 to learn it, to grow from it. 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.02 And so, Lord, give us Your Holy Spirit right now 00:04:20.06\00:04:21.82 as we rightly divide Your word of truth. 00:04:21.86\00:04:24.33 May this go out and bless so many people, 00:04:24.36\00:04:26.73 including ourselves, we ask in Jesus' name, amen. 00:04:26.76\00:04:29.53 Amen. Praise the Lord, okay. 00:04:29.56\00:04:31.17 Memory text, we need to get memory text 00:04:31.20\00:04:32.77 that may just sets up the foundation 00:04:32.80\00:04:34.87 of what we're going to build off of and spring in. 00:04:34.90\00:04:37.04 And also in our lessons, 00:04:37.07\00:04:38.41 some of us will kind of go off to the other 00:04:38.44\00:04:39.91 and work with that 00:04:39.94\00:04:41.28 because we're given some of the same passages 00:04:41.31\00:04:42.74 and we want to stick with the lesson 00:04:42.78\00:04:44.15 and try to get the meaning out of it. 00:04:44.18\00:04:45.51 So it helps you and helps us too. 00:04:45.55\00:04:46.92 Sister Shelley, how about you? 00:04:46.95\00:04:48.28 Would you read our memory text for us? 00:04:48.32\00:04:49.65 Absolutely. All right. 00:04:49.68\00:04:51.12 "O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, 00:04:51.15\00:04:54.12 the one who dwells between the cherubim, 00:04:54.16\00:04:57.66 You are God, 00:04:57.69\00:04:59.03 You alone of all the kingdoms of the earth, 00:04:59.06\00:05:03.23 You have made heaven and earth." 00:05:03.26\00:05:05.90 Isaiah 37:16. 00:05:05.93\00:05:09.07 That's also exciting to know, right, in passage of scripture. 00:05:09.10\00:05:13.14 There in Isaiah 37:16 again, with the Sabbath part, 00:05:13.17\00:05:16.64 we're just kind of go and set a little background here. 00:05:16.68\00:05:18.88 I think it's important 00:05:18.91\00:05:20.25 that we go through this on this verse, 00:05:20.28\00:05:22.28 because at this point in time, Assyria was at its height, 00:05:22.32\00:05:26.72 in the military form, 00:05:26.76\00:05:28.66 you know, and they were certainly looking 00:05:28.69\00:05:30.86 at God's people 00:05:30.89\00:05:32.23 and thinking about anytime taking advantage of them. 00:05:32.26\00:05:35.00 And I say that 00:05:35.03\00:05:36.36 it's because at this point in time, 00:05:36.40\00:05:38.03 under Hezekiah, they really had no military, 00:05:38.07\00:05:40.27 they were really, 00:05:40.30\00:05:41.64 I mean, they just, they really couldn't fight. 00:05:41.67\00:05:43.64 And I'm so thankful God says, 00:05:43.67\00:05:45.51 I'll fight your battles for you, 00:05:45.54\00:05:47.34 that's good, isn't it? 00:05:47.38\00:05:48.94 According to 2 Kings 18 says, "Judah had no training, 00:05:48.98\00:05:53.28 they had no cavalry as it were, no military, 00:05:53.31\00:05:57.29 and then all of a sudden 00:05:57.32\00:05:59.19 here was Assyria trying to attack God's people 00:05:59.22\00:06:02.96 and through rumors. 00:06:02.99\00:06:04.76 I thought that was very interesting. 00:06:04.79\00:06:06.13 They were actually telling lies. 00:06:06.16\00:06:07.50 They were saying 00:06:07.53\00:06:08.86 that God's people were trying to attack them, 00:06:08.90\00:06:10.23 had to be very careful with all these things. 00:06:10.27\00:06:11.83 So it gives them excuse to go and get. 00:06:11.87\00:06:13.64 We hear a lot of that today going on. 00:06:13.67\00:06:15.80 There's one side tells a story 00:06:15.84\00:06:17.24 and the other side tells that story. 00:06:17.27\00:06:18.61 And all of a sudden, we have to be very careful. 00:06:18.64\00:06:20.18 Jerusalem, though, 00:06:20.21\00:06:21.54 we realized was soon to face a real terrible siege. 00:06:21.58\00:06:25.41 Assyrian started to, 00:06:25.45\00:06:26.78 I want to put text that like this, 00:06:26.82\00:06:28.15 a talk war, maybe a cold war, we call it today. 00:06:28.18\00:06:31.85 And again, they begin to, 00:06:31.89\00:06:33.52 they begin to say to God's people, 00:06:33.56\00:06:36.29 and to Hezekiah's people, 00:06:36.32\00:06:37.66 "Listen, the only way you're going to get out of this 00:06:37.69\00:06:39.83 is if you turn on the king." 00:06:39.86\00:06:41.40 I thought that was kind of interesting. 00:06:41.43\00:06:43.00 A lot of times the devil works that way, 00:06:43.03\00:06:44.37 doesn't he? 00:06:44.40\00:06:45.73 Trying to get us to turn on one another 00:06:45.77\00:06:48.64 when we should be shoulder to shoulder. 00:06:48.67\00:06:50.91 We should be working together in the cause of God. 00:06:50.94\00:06:53.98 But the enemy tries to divide and conquer 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.58 and certainly to separate here. 00:06:55.61\00:06:57.71 Now, we realize then, since the king knew right then, 00:06:57.75\00:07:01.18 we realized that something was going to happen. 00:07:01.22\00:07:03.72 A battle, his people may be defeated, 00:07:03.75\00:07:06.05 a lot of death. 00:07:06.09\00:07:07.42 He put on sackcloth and ashes, didn't he? 00:07:07.46\00:07:08.89 I wonder why they put those things on 00:07:08.92\00:07:10.63 and went to the temple. 00:07:10.66\00:07:12.66 Number one, it was a custom, was it not? 00:07:12.69\00:07:15.00 And I think he was falling after. 00:07:15.03\00:07:16.36 I think it was Joel Chapter 1. 00:07:16.40\00:07:18.27 That's what Joel did when he was in trouble. 00:07:18.30\00:07:20.50 And so now before Hezekiah realized, 00:07:20.54\00:07:22.34 "I'm in trouble. 00:07:22.37\00:07:23.71 I'm in trouble. 00:07:23.74\00:07:25.07 And best thing I can do," and I like this, 00:07:25.11\00:07:26.44 "is I need to seek God." 00:07:26.47\00:07:28.08 So when you're in trouble, my brothers and sisters, 00:07:28.11\00:07:30.18 may I just say seek God. 00:07:30.21\00:07:31.55 That's right. Seek God first, not everything. 00:07:31.58\00:07:33.78 But seek God first right here, 00:07:33.82\00:07:35.58 because there was a great crisis, 00:07:35.62\00:07:36.95 there's going to be a lot of death, 00:07:36.99\00:07:38.32 a lot of suffering, so on. 00:07:38.35\00:07:39.69 And right then and there 00:07:39.72\00:07:41.06 is what we talked about in our lesson. 00:07:41.09\00:07:42.42 We need good leadership. 00:07:42.46\00:07:43.79 Now we're facing a tremendous battle 00:07:43.83\00:07:45.43 as God's last day people. 00:07:45.46\00:07:47.33 We need good leadership. 00:07:47.36\00:07:49.06 Next, we talk of, can I, may I say from the ground up, 00:07:49.10\00:07:52.10 need new good leaders 00:07:52.13\00:07:53.47 that will lead based upon the Word of God. 00:07:53.50\00:07:56.91 And I want to say the Spirit of Prophecy 00:07:56.94\00:07:58.44 if you allow me to do that, 00:07:58.47\00:08:00.54 because I think that's the greatest gift, 00:08:00.58\00:08:02.78 certainly Holy Spirit given to the church, 00:08:02.81\00:08:04.21 but it's given to the church today, 00:08:04.25\00:08:05.58 which we can read. 00:08:05.61\00:08:06.95 And somebody like me simple minded, 00:08:06.98\00:08:08.48 it helps me to understand this crisis 00:08:08.52\00:08:10.75 that we are in that how to prepare for it. 00:08:10.79\00:08:13.29 This is what was going on this time, here for sure. 00:08:13.32\00:08:15.89 Now, another couple things 00:08:15.92\00:08:17.26 that Assyria had belittled the God of heaven. 00:08:17.29\00:08:19.39 And they were making fun of Him and said, 00:08:19.43\00:08:21.13 You know what, we'll defeat Him 00:08:21.16\00:08:22.50 like we've done all the other gods. 00:08:22.53\00:08:23.87 So we're not really worried about this. 00:08:23.90\00:08:26.20 But he realized 00:08:26.23\00:08:27.57 what was getting ready to take place. 00:08:27.60\00:08:28.94 Hezekiah had tried to encourage his people. 00:08:28.97\00:08:31.97 He tried to encourage them. 00:08:32.01\00:08:33.34 At some time 00:08:33.38\00:08:34.71 some of you who work with people all the time, 00:08:34.74\00:08:36.61 and all of you do, 00:08:36.64\00:08:37.98 you try to encourage people and there are just some you, 00:08:38.01\00:08:40.32 you just cannot encourage. 00:08:40.35\00:08:41.92 You know, you get on the Word of God, 00:08:41.95\00:08:43.28 you pray with them, you bolster them up, 00:08:43.32\00:08:44.65 and next day, they're in the same, 00:08:44.69\00:08:46.02 we say same pickle, 00:08:46.05\00:08:47.39 you know, but anyway, that's what we should be doing. 00:08:47.42\00:08:48.99 So Hezekiah, said, "Man, I need to seek God. 00:08:49.02\00:08:52.19 I need to get, you know, 00:08:52.23\00:08:53.56 I need to bring God into this thing. 00:08:53.60\00:08:54.93 So he sent a message of encouragement to his people, 00:08:54.96\00:08:59.10 some accepted, some didn't accepted, 00:08:59.13\00:09:01.50 kind of reminds me of Joshua and Caleb, 00:09:01.54\00:09:04.51 you remember that when they talked, 00:09:04.54\00:09:06.11 they were. 00:09:06.14\00:09:07.48 They said, "We want to encourage the people. 00:09:07.51\00:09:09.58 Don't fear, 00:09:09.61\00:09:10.95 you have nothing to fear with men. 00:09:10.98\00:09:12.31 You need to be, you know, your courage 00:09:12.35\00:09:14.25 and your love needs to be put toward God, 00:09:14.28\00:09:15.85 God's going to be. 00:09:15.88\00:09:17.49 Will be more than conquerors through Him. 00:09:17.52\00:09:19.49 But sometime people have a very difficult time, 00:09:19.52\00:09:21.76 you know, of listening. 00:09:21.79\00:09:23.12 So today I would say, "Be strong. 00:09:23.16\00:09:25.29 Be strong in the Lord 00:09:25.33\00:09:26.66 regardless of what we're going through. 00:09:26.70\00:09:28.70 And what we're, we are headed into, 00:09:28.73\00:09:31.37 and I have to bring that, 00:09:31.40\00:09:32.83 I think Pastor John mentioned before we went on the air. 00:09:32.87\00:09:34.60 Some of this stuff needs to be brought forward 00:09:34.64\00:09:36.34 to today. 00:09:36.37\00:09:37.71 I need encouragement today. 00:09:37.74\00:09:39.97 I need to know, I read this, I get encouraged 00:09:40.01\00:09:42.14 because I see when the odds are seemed to be 00:09:42.18\00:09:43.81 all against, you know, God's people. 00:09:43.85\00:09:46.45 That's when He steps up to the plate as it were. 00:09:46.48\00:09:48.68 This is when He begins to work it out. 00:09:48.72\00:09:50.22 That's when He takes the battle into His own hands. 00:09:50.25\00:09:52.65 And He gets to show that He is God. 00:09:52.69\00:09:54.89 And I believe He's doing that right now 00:09:54.92\00:09:56.52 in this hour that we're living in. 00:09:56.56\00:09:59.39 Well, we notice that the king here, 00:09:59.43\00:10:01.76 and the king of Assyria, 00:10:01.80\00:10:03.70 Sennacherib, they're pretty close. 00:10:03.73\00:10:06.20 Sennacherib Sennacherib. Okay. 00:10:06.23\00:10:07.64 It's close as I'm going to get. 00:10:07.67\00:10:09.20 Yeah, and I'm going to go right on with it. 00:10:09.24\00:10:10.61 And I'll say the king of Assyria, 00:10:10.64\00:10:12.21 and I won't stumble around over that. 00:10:12.24\00:10:13.64 All right. 00:10:13.68\00:10:15.11 We'll know who it is. 00:10:15.14\00:10:16.48 All right, Sunday's lessons. 00:10:16.51\00:10:17.85 We don't have a lot of time on it, 00:10:17.88\00:10:19.21 but it's okay, Lord puts things on your heart. 00:10:19.25\00:10:20.75 I think we should share those things 00:10:20.78\00:10:22.15 that God puts on our heart. 00:10:22.18\00:10:23.52 Some of these lessons strings attached. 00:10:23.55\00:10:25.19 What does that mean? 00:10:25.22\00:10:26.55 Isaiah 36:1, said, 00:10:26.59\00:10:28.06 "Now it came to pass 00:10:28.09\00:10:29.42 in the fourteenth year of Hezekiah, 00:10:29.46\00:10:30.99 that Sennacherib king of Assyria," 00:10:31.03\00:10:33.26 I said it, "came up 00:10:33.29\00:10:34.63 against all the defensive cities 00:10:34.66\00:10:36.33 of Judah and took them." 00:10:36.36\00:10:38.23 And Sennacherib goes against Judah, 00:10:38.27\00:10:41.14 and this was about four years after he became king, 00:10:41.17\00:10:44.27 kind of interesting. 00:10:44.31\00:10:45.64 He goes, he goes against God's people, 00:10:45.67\00:10:48.24 because of basically three reasons. 00:10:48.28\00:10:49.98 I'll give you those three reasons. 00:10:50.01\00:10:51.35 Number one, 00:10:51.38\00:10:53.08 Hezekiah refused to submit to the Assyrian yoke. 00:10:53.11\00:10:57.09 He just refused. 00:10:57.12\00:10:58.45 At some time, we had to refuse to go 00:10:58.49\00:11:00.26 under a yoke or bondage of things 00:11:00.29\00:11:01.86 we know that's not godly, 00:11:01.89\00:11:03.29 things that we know that goes against God's Word. 00:11:03.32\00:11:06.03 Two, Hezekiah call for some help 00:11:06.06\00:11:08.56 with his neighbors to go against the king 00:11:08.60\00:11:10.97 and the king held that against him. 00:11:11.00\00:11:12.93 So maybe some of the things we said or done. 00:11:12.97\00:11:14.47 Some people say, you know, you're going to be in trouble 00:11:14.50\00:11:15.97 because you said certain things. 00:11:16.00\00:11:17.54 And I say, you know, 00:11:17.57\00:11:18.91 you can't get of his truths, let it be. 00:11:18.94\00:11:20.28 That's right. 00:11:20.31\00:11:21.64 You know, and but he went ahead and the king said, 00:11:21.68\00:11:23.41 "Ah, I remember that." 00:11:23.45\00:11:24.78 Number three, they had assisted 00:11:24.81\00:11:26.82 in the Philistines in their uprising. 00:11:26.85\00:11:29.48 So they done several things that the king didn't like, 00:11:29.52\00:11:32.49 and he said, we're going to basically get 00:11:32.52\00:11:33.86 even with you, 00:11:33.89\00:11:35.22 Another problem of Hezekiah, 00:11:35.26\00:11:37.63 now refused to pay tribute money. 00:11:37.66\00:11:41.46 My mind just goes 00:11:41.50\00:11:42.83 in a lot of different directions. 00:11:42.86\00:11:44.20 I'm just so sorry 00:11:44.23\00:11:45.57 when I talk about tribute money, 00:11:45.60\00:11:46.94 so I'm not going to go too much, the tribute money. 00:11:46.97\00:11:49.10 And to me that, isn't that protection, money, 00:11:49.14\00:11:51.77 tribute money, I mean, 00:11:51.81\00:11:53.54 Pastor John mentioned New York law, 00:11:53.58\00:11:54.94 some I mean, they used to pay for protection, did they not? 00:11:54.98\00:11:57.41 And some cities, 00:11:57.45\00:11:58.78 I think today probably still do, 00:11:58.81\00:12:00.25 they pay money to be kind of protected. 00:12:00.28\00:12:01.88 And so anyway, this is protection, money, 00:12:01.92\00:12:04.09 tribute money, 00:12:04.12\00:12:06.12 like his father Ahaz had had done, 00:12:06.15\00:12:08.32 and money can still be an issue today. 00:12:08.36\00:12:11.39 And maybe question might be asked, 00:12:11.43\00:12:12.96 you know, to each one of us, 00:12:12.99\00:12:15.10 good point, where do you pay your tribute? 00:12:15.13\00:12:18.07 Hmm. 00:12:18.10\00:12:19.43 Let that go wherever you want to, 00:12:19.47\00:12:20.80 where do you pay your tribute? 00:12:20.84\00:12:22.17 You know, think about. 00:12:22.20\00:12:23.54 Now, with a lot of these things going on with Assyria, war, 00:12:23.57\00:12:28.34 death is taking place right now. 00:12:28.38\00:12:31.25 It seemed a very good time right now for Hezekiah 00:12:31.28\00:12:35.88 because he said, you know, right now 00:12:35.92\00:12:37.25 we're not going to take this anymore, 00:12:37.29\00:12:38.62 we're going to, 00:12:38.65\00:12:39.99 there's going to be an uprising. 00:12:40.02\00:12:41.36 And we're going to rebel, 00:12:41.39\00:12:42.72 and give you a couple quick reasons why. 00:12:42.76\00:12:45.19 Now remember, we looked at the power, 00:12:45.23\00:12:47.33 the nation in power was kind of going downhill. 00:12:47.36\00:12:50.57 Hezekiah on the impression of the Holy Spirit 00:12:50.60\00:12:53.00 realized this thing, 00:12:53.03\00:12:54.37 if they were going to do something, 00:12:54.40\00:12:55.74 it might be time to do it. 00:12:55.77\00:12:57.11 And so they begin to rebel. 00:12:57.14\00:12:58.57 2 Kings 18:3 00:12:58.61\00:13:00.88 and it takes a lot of time to go through 00:13:00.91\00:13:02.44 and different panels will go through this, 00:13:02.48\00:13:03.95 as you look at what we're studying right now, 00:13:03.98\00:13:05.95 in Isaiah, and you go to, like 2 Kings on through there, 00:13:05.98\00:13:09.52 several of those chapters are just almost identical 00:13:09.55\00:13:11.69 to what we're talking about. 00:13:11.72\00:13:13.05 So you can go back and forth and get a lot of meaning. 00:13:13.09\00:13:14.76 I hope that you do that. 00:13:14.79\00:13:16.12 So let me give you these three, four, five reasons real quick. 00:13:16.16\00:13:19.16 Number one, why, 00:13:19.19\00:13:20.80 and why rebel at this point in time? 00:13:20.83\00:13:22.30 2 Kings 18:3, 00:13:22.33\00:13:24.10 "He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord." 00:13:24.13\00:13:26.94 Oh, that's good. 00:13:26.97\00:13:28.30 Number one, if you do that, 00:13:28.34\00:13:29.67 which is right in the sight of the Lord, 00:13:29.70\00:13:31.31 God will bless you. 00:13:31.34\00:13:33.11 That's right. He will always bless. 00:13:33.14\00:13:34.51 That's right. 00:13:34.54\00:13:35.88 It might take a little while 00:13:35.91\00:13:37.25 and may take a little twist and turn. 00:13:37.28\00:13:38.61 But God will always bless 00:13:38.65\00:13:39.98 those who stand for what is right. 00:13:40.02\00:13:41.68 2 Kings 18:4, second reason. 00:13:41.72\00:13:44.32 He broke the images and he destroyed the groves. 00:13:44.35\00:13:47.92 That's right. It was time to do it. 00:13:47.96\00:13:49.46 And he was rising up. 00:13:49.49\00:13:50.83 This is what God asked him to do. 00:13:50.86\00:13:52.19 Number three, 2 Kings 18:5, notice, 00:13:52.23\00:13:54.96 "Because He trusted, notice, in the Lord." 00:13:55.00\00:13:58.30 Wow. 00:13:58.33\00:13:59.67 In the time we trusted in the Lord, 00:13:59.70\00:14:01.20 especially the hour that we're living in, 00:14:01.24\00:14:03.47 you know, I can't understand, 00:14:03.51\00:14:04.84 I understand how people get by in this world 00:14:04.87\00:14:06.98 if they don't have something I like the Lord to lean on, 00:14:07.01\00:14:09.81 the Lord to lean on right now in this time. 00:14:09.84\00:14:12.21 2 Kings 18:6, it says here, "He kept God's commandments." 00:14:12.25\00:14:17.92 Wow, he kept God's commandment. 00:14:17.95\00:14:19.99 So there's another clue for us. 00:14:20.02\00:14:21.89 We want to be blessed. 00:14:21.92\00:14:23.26 And we want to ride on the high places 00:14:23.29\00:14:24.63 and say we need to keep the commandments of the Lord. 00:14:24.66\00:14:26.73 Now, number five, last one here, 00:14:26.76\00:14:28.23 2 Kings 18:7 says, 00:14:28.26\00:14:30.83 "And the Lord was with him, 00:14:30.87\00:14:33.50 and prepared him wherever he went." 00:14:33.54\00:14:35.90 Amen. 00:14:35.94\00:14:37.27 And I believe that we can say that, 00:14:37.31\00:14:38.64 we should be able to say that from experience, 00:14:38.67\00:14:42.14 that we've committed our life to God 00:14:42.18\00:14:44.18 by keeping His commandments 00:14:44.21\00:14:45.55 by His grace and by His strength. 00:14:45.58\00:14:46.92 That's right. 00:14:46.95\00:14:48.28 And the Lord was with Him. 00:14:48.32\00:14:49.75 Can you say that today that the Lord is with you, 00:14:49.78\00:14:52.65 wherever you're going, is the Lord really with you? 00:14:52.69\00:14:54.86 And He's only going to be with you 00:14:54.89\00:14:56.22 as we're doing those things 00:14:56.26\00:14:57.59 which are according to His will. 00:14:57.63\00:14:59.13 Isn't that so wonderful to know these things? 00:14:59.16\00:15:01.23 We're just setting the stage, Brother Ryan, 00:15:01.26\00:15:02.66 you're going to have to take control 00:15:02.70\00:15:04.03 from right here, my brother. 00:15:04.07\00:15:05.40 All right, let's do it. 00:15:05.43\00:15:06.77 Let's continue on. 00:15:06.80\00:15:08.14 So there is a lot of history in this lesson. 00:15:08.17\00:15:10.24 And Monday's lesson entitled, "Propaganda" 00:15:10.27\00:15:14.84 will be a little bit of a historical narrative, 00:15:14.88\00:15:19.51 setting us up for Wednesday's, 00:15:19.55\00:15:22.38 excuse me, Tuesday's lesson 00:15:22.42\00:15:23.75 which Shelley is going to kind of continue on 00:15:23.79\00:15:25.15 with that narrative. 00:15:25.19\00:15:26.52 But there's a lot to read here. 00:15:26.55\00:15:28.06 I may not even be able to get through it all. 00:15:28.09\00:15:29.49 But I want to just set the foundation here 00:15:29.52\00:15:31.06 by saying that, 00:15:31.09\00:15:32.43 you know, Assyria was the champions of the world 00:15:32.46\00:15:34.03 at this time. 00:15:34.06\00:15:35.40 Yeah. 00:15:35.43\00:15:36.77 This was before Babylon about, 00:15:36.80\00:15:38.13 I don't know, 150, 160 years before Babylon. 00:15:38.17\00:15:40.37 And so at this time, 00:15:40.40\00:15:41.74 they're the champions of the world. 00:15:41.77\00:15:43.10 And they were very intelligent. 00:15:43.14\00:15:44.47 Don't think for one moment that and I forget, 00:15:44.51\00:15:47.38 how do you say, How do you say his name pastor again, King TP. 00:15:47.41\00:15:51.35 Tiglath-Pileser, okay. 00:15:51.38\00:15:54.98 So, you know, this guy was, 00:15:55.02\00:15:57.19 I mean, he was the military genius of his day. 00:15:57.22\00:15:59.25 And we have to give credit 00:15:59.29\00:16:00.62 where credit is due to a certain extent, 00:16:00.66\00:16:02.12 because there's a reason 00:16:02.16\00:16:03.49 why they were the champions of the world, 00:16:03.53\00:16:04.86 but they, they were bullies, they were the bully also. 00:16:04.89\00:16:07.36 They were that big brother, 00:16:07.40\00:16:08.73 or that bully coming and stealing 00:16:08.76\00:16:11.10 your lunch money, right? 00:16:11.13\00:16:12.47 And that's exactly what was happening with Israel, 00:16:12.50\00:16:14.67 and many of those surrounding nations 00:16:14.70\00:16:16.71 and in cities around them. 00:16:16.74\00:16:18.41 And so, I'm going to go ahead and start back with verse 1, 00:16:18.44\00:16:20.98 even though Brother Kenny read it. 00:16:21.01\00:16:22.54 I'm going to kind of walk us through this narrative 00:16:22.58\00:16:24.21 to show us what is happening 00:16:24.25\00:16:25.58 because there are some lessons that we can learn from this. 00:16:25.61\00:16:27.82 So again, Monday's lesson, Propaganda. 00:16:27.85\00:16:31.19 And you'll see why it's entitled that 00:16:31.22\00:16:32.55 in just a moment. 00:16:32.59\00:16:33.92 So it says there in verse 1, "Now it came to pass..." 00:16:33.96\00:16:35.52 Isaiah 36. 00:16:35.56\00:16:36.89 Isaiah, that's right, Isaiah Chapter 36. 00:16:36.93\00:16:39.43 Thank you, Shelley. 00:16:39.46\00:16:40.80 We're going to start reading there in verse 1. 00:16:40.83\00:16:43.03 "Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year 00:16:43.06\00:16:46.03 of King Hezekiah that Sennacherib 00:16:46.07\00:16:48.47 king of Assyria 00:16:48.50\00:16:49.84 came up against all the fortified cities 00:16:49.87\00:16:51.57 of Judah and took them." 00:16:51.61\00:16:53.91 And this is where Monday's lesson 00:16:53.94\00:16:55.58 picks up in verse 2, 00:16:55.61\00:16:57.11 "Then the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh, " 00:16:57.15\00:17:00.78 if I'm saying that correctly, I believe so, 00:17:00.82\00:17:02.88 "with a great army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. 00:17:02.92\00:17:08.52 And he stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool, 00:17:08.56\00:17:11.16 on the highway to the Fuller's Field. 00:17:11.19\00:17:13.29 And Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, 00:17:13.33\00:17:17.17 and then Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, 00:17:17.20\00:17:21.50 the recorder, came out to him." 00:17:21.54\00:17:23.44 So this, this red Rabshakeh, 00:17:23.47\00:17:26.41 which is basically kind of 00:17:26.44\00:17:27.94 the butler/kind of right hand man 00:17:27.98\00:17:32.41 under the king. 00:17:32.45\00:17:33.98 The king has sent him out as a representative. 00:17:34.02\00:17:35.65 He said, "Well go to Jerusalem, send them this message, 00:17:35.68\00:17:38.39 they need to hear this message 00:17:38.42\00:17:39.75 because I'm coming for their city." 00:17:39.79\00:17:41.16 And here's what you have to understand. 00:17:41.19\00:17:43.89 This is how intelligent this king was. 00:17:43.93\00:17:45.79 All of these other surrounding cities, 00:17:45.83\00:17:47.16 they put up a fight. 00:17:47.20\00:17:48.53 So he had to use his resources 00:17:48.56\00:17:49.90 to take down these other surrounding cities, 00:17:49.93\00:17:51.30 but he's thinking if Jerusalem has been paying attention, 00:17:51.33\00:17:54.04 and they know I'm coming for them, 00:17:54.07\00:17:55.67 why waste my resources and efforts 00:17:55.70\00:17:58.24 and going in and sieging the city? 00:17:58.27\00:18:00.08 What if I can use a little bit of manipulation, 00:18:00.11\00:18:02.54 propaganda 00:18:02.58\00:18:03.91 and basically talk them into surrendering 00:18:03.95\00:18:06.01 that we don't have to, 00:18:06.05\00:18:07.38 you know, mess up our resources 00:18:07.42\00:18:09.42 or using of our resources 00:18:09.45\00:18:10.79 or our fine men 00:18:10.82\00:18:12.15 or any deaths or anything like that, 00:18:12.19\00:18:13.52 which was actually a genius plot. 00:18:13.56\00:18:15.56 So notice what it continues to say, 00:18:15.59\00:18:16.99 verse 4, this is where the Rabshakeh 00:18:17.03\00:18:19.43 begins to promote this propaganda. 00:18:19.46\00:18:21.70 So here we go. 00:18:21.73\00:18:23.06 Verse 4, it says, 00:18:23.10\00:18:24.43 "Then the Rabshakeh said to them, 00:18:24.47\00:18:27.30 'Say now to Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, 00:18:27.34\00:18:30.91 the king of Assyria: 00:18:30.94\00:18:33.04 'What confidence is this in which you trust? 00:18:33.07\00:18:36.85 I say to you speak of having plans, 00:18:36.88\00:18:39.68 or I say you having, 00:18:39.71\00:18:41.05 speak of having plans and power for war, 00:18:41.08\00:18:43.62 but they are mere words." 00:18:43.65\00:18:45.65 So you know what, you say you have a plan of war, 00:18:45.69\00:18:47.99 you say that you're okay, 00:18:48.02\00:18:49.42 that you're going to stand your ground 00:18:49.46\00:18:50.79 but, you know it sounds like you just talk, all talk. 00:18:50.83\00:18:53.36 He says, "Now in whom do you trust, 00:18:53.40\00:18:56.03 that you rebel against me? 00:18:56.06\00:18:57.80 Look! 00:18:57.83\00:18:59.17 You are trusting in the staff of this broken reed, Egypt, 00:18:59.20\00:19:02.87 on which if a man leans, 00:19:02.90\00:19:05.77 it will go out into his hand and pierce it. 00:19:05.81\00:19:08.61 So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him." 00:19:08.64\00:19:11.95 So notice the arrogance of his language here. 00:19:11.98\00:19:14.02 He's saying really, really, you got to, 00:19:14.05\00:19:15.98 you got to trust in Egypt, those Egyptians? 00:19:16.02\00:19:18.49 Really? 00:19:18.52\00:19:19.85 That you're going to help, they're weak 00:19:19.89\00:19:21.22 and they're unreliable 00:19:21.26\00:19:22.59 and you're going to put your trust in them 00:19:22.62\00:19:23.96 that will crush them like a little mosquito, right? 00:19:23.99\00:19:25.86 It goes on to say in verse 7, 00:19:25.89\00:19:28.16 "But if you say to me, 'We trust in the Lord our God,' 00:19:28.20\00:19:32.93 is it not He whose high places 00:19:32.97\00:19:35.10 and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, 00:19:35.14\00:19:38.27 and said to Judah and Jerusalem, 00:19:38.31\00:19:40.18 'You shall worship before this altar'?" 00:19:40.21\00:19:42.94 'Okay, so notice this why Hezekiah 00:19:42.98\00:19:44.95 as Brother Kenny brought up beautifully, 00:19:44.98\00:19:46.75 he was a good king for the most part, 00:19:46.78\00:19:49.35 but he's a good king, like many others 00:19:49.38\00:19:50.85 that made mistakes right along the way. 00:19:50.89\00:19:52.69 And so in this case, he had made the mistake 00:19:52.72\00:19:54.62 and so basically notice the propaganda 00:19:54.66\00:19:56.76 and notice the manipulation here 00:19:56.79\00:19:58.53 that Rabshakeh is using. 00:19:58.56\00:20:00.80 He's basically saying, 00:20:00.83\00:20:02.16 "Look, you cannot depend on the Lord to help you 00:20:02.20\00:20:04.60 because Hezekiah has offended him 00:20:04.63\00:20:07.34 by removing his high places, 00:20:07.37\00:20:09.34 and the altars throughout Judah, 00:20:09.37\00:20:11.41 telling the people to worship at one altar in Judah. 00:20:11.44\00:20:14.08 Well he's offended God 00:20:14.11\00:20:15.48 and you think you can depend on the Lord? 00:20:15.51\00:20:17.41 All right." And so he continues on. 00:20:17.45\00:20:20.32 Verse 8, "Now therefore, I urge you, 00:20:20.35\00:20:22.52 give a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, 00:20:22.55\00:20:25.45 and I will give you two thousand horses, 00:20:25.49\00:20:28.96 if you are able on your part to put riders on them!" 00:20:28.99\00:20:32.66 Again notice. 00:20:32.69\00:20:34.03 Again, the arrogance and the sarcasm here. 00:20:34.06\00:20:37.23 You know what he says, 00:20:37.27\00:20:38.60 "You don't even have enough train men 00:20:38.63\00:20:40.20 to handle 2,000 horses 00:20:40.24\00:20:41.57 and you want to come up against us? 00:20:41.60\00:20:43.07 Come on, come on, right." 00:20:43.10\00:20:44.94 Verse 9, he says, 00:20:44.97\00:20:46.98 "How then will you repel one captain 00:20:47.01\00:20:49.81 of the least of my master's servants, 00:20:49.84\00:20:51.68 and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen? 00:20:51.71\00:20:55.15 Have I now come up without the Lord 00:20:55.18\00:20:57.69 against the land to destroy it? 00:20:57.72\00:20:59.95 The Lord said to me, 00:20:59.99\00:21:01.72 'Go up against this land, and destroy it.' " 00:21:01.76\00:21:04.59 So now, now he's really throwing, 00:21:04.63\00:21:06.70 he's really throwing it here. 00:21:06.73\00:21:08.13 He said, "Look, you know, in fact, 00:21:08.16\00:21:10.37 the Lord is on Assyria side, 00:21:10.40\00:21:12.73 and he told Sennacherib to come and destroy Judah. 00:21:12.77\00:21:16.20 So you're wanting to trust in the Lord. 00:21:16.24\00:21:17.84 But look, your Lord told us to come do this. 00:21:17.87\00:21:21.14 So why don't you just lay down and surrender? 00:21:21.18\00:21:23.11 And by the way, send us a little bit of a gift, 00:21:23.14\00:21:24.81 you know, give me some nice, right?" 00:21:24.85\00:21:26.92 All right, verse 11, it says, "Then Eliakim, Shebna, 00:21:26.95\00:21:30.49 and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, and they said to him, 00:21:30.52\00:21:34.62 "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, " 00:21:34.66\00:21:36.93 notice the response there, "Please speak to us in Aramaic, 00:21:36.96\00:21:41.63 for we understand it, 00:21:41.66\00:21:43.00 and do not speak to us in Hebrew 00:21:43.03\00:21:44.40 in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.' " 00:21:44.43\00:21:46.77 In other words, what they're saying is, 00:21:46.80\00:21:48.87 don't say that too loud in that language, 00:21:48.90\00:21:50.97 these guys on the wall can hear what you're saying, 00:21:51.01\00:21:53.14 you know, there is the challenge. 00:21:53.17\00:21:54.51 And they're basically saying, "Don't speak in Hebrew, 00:21:54.54\00:21:56.41 where these other brothers can hear you." 00:21:56.44\00:21:58.15 Speak in Aramaic, we can understand that, 00:21:58.18\00:22:00.15 but they can't. 00:22:00.18\00:22:01.52 "But the Rabshakeh, he responds and says, 00:22:01.55\00:22:03.99 "Has my master sent to me, to your master, 00:22:04.02\00:22:07.09 and to you to speak these words, 00:22:07.12\00:22:09.39 and not to the men who sit on the wall, 00:22:09.42\00:22:12.06 who will eat and drink their own waste with you?" 00:22:12.09\00:22:15.93 Verse 13, it says, 00:22:15.96\00:22:17.30 "Then the Rabshakeh stood 00:22:17.33\00:22:18.67 and called out with a loud voice in Hebrew, 00:22:18.70\00:22:20.44 and said," notice, eats of right in his face, 00:22:20.47\00:22:22.64 almost in Hebrew anyways. 00:22:22.67\00:22:24.37 He says, "Hear the words of the great king, 00:22:24.41\00:22:26.24 the king of Assyria! 00:22:26.27\00:22:27.61 Thus says the king: 00:22:27.64\00:22:28.98 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, ' 00:22:29.01\00:22:31.08 notice this, he says, 00:22:31.11\00:22:32.45 'for he will not be able to deliver you, 00:22:32.48\00:22:35.18 nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, 00:22:35.22\00:22:38.85 saying, 'The Lord will surely deliver us, 00:22:38.89\00:22:41.42 this city will not be given 00:22:41.46\00:22:42.89 into the hand of the Assyrian king.' " 00:22:42.92\00:22:47.46 'So basically, he's saying, 00:22:47.50\00:22:48.83 I want you to understand this message clearly, 00:22:48.86\00:22:50.97 listen up, because these brothers 00:22:51.00\00:22:52.40 ain't going to tell you the truth. 00:22:52.43\00:22:53.77 Let me just give it to you straight. 00:22:53.80\00:22:55.34 Verse 16, we're coming to the end of this. 00:22:55.37\00:22:56.94 It says, "Do not listen to Hezekiah, 00:22:56.97\00:22:59.57 for thus says the king of Assyria: 00:22:59.61\00:23:01.74 'Make peace with me by a present," 00:23:01.78\00:23:06.35 here it is, "and come out to me, 00:23:06.38\00:23:08.08 and every one of you eat from his own vine 00:23:08.12\00:23:10.42 and everyone would eat of his own fig tree, 00:23:10.45\00:23:12.79 and every one of you would drink of the waters 00:23:12.82\00:23:14.62 of his own cistern, 00:23:14.66\00:23:16.73 until I come and take you away 00:23:16.76\00:23:18.53 to a land like your own land, 00:23:18.56\00:23:20.86 a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards." 00:23:20.90\00:23:25.53 So he says, "Look, come give me a present, 00:23:25.57\00:23:28.60 give me something nice. 00:23:28.64\00:23:29.97 And I'll take you away to better things right, 00:23:30.01\00:23:32.27 to avoid a siege 00:23:32.31\00:23:33.94 in which you have nothing to eat and drink. 00:23:33.98\00:23:36.04 Give up now, and you'll be treated well." 00:23:36.08\00:23:38.05 That's basically what he's saying. 00:23:38.08\00:23:39.41 "We don't really want to fight. 00:23:39.45\00:23:40.78 We don't want to come to that. So just give up now." 00:23:40.82\00:23:42.98 And then notice verse 18, again, 00:23:43.02\00:23:45.19 "Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, 00:23:45.22\00:23:47.56 saying, 'The Lord will deliver us.' " 00:23:47.59\00:23:50.09 Do you notice a pattern throughout this entire thing, 00:23:50.13\00:23:52.56 at least three or four times at this point 00:23:52.59\00:23:54.66 he has already brought up, 00:23:54.70\00:23:56.03 "Don't let Hezekiah tell you the Lord or do this. 00:23:56.06\00:23:58.03 Well, the Lord really helped you? 00:23:58.07\00:23:59.43 The Lord's not going to come through, 00:23:59.47\00:24:01.00 he keeps bringing it up as if, 00:24:01.04\00:24:02.60 as if he almost knows something. 00:24:02.64\00:24:04.64 As if he knows 00:24:04.67\00:24:06.41 that if the people grasp the concept 00:24:06.44\00:24:09.51 that they need to depend on the Lord 00:24:09.54\00:24:11.51 that something may happen. 00:24:11.55\00:24:12.88 So what is he doing? 00:24:12.91\00:24:14.25 And who do you thought of, 00:24:14.28\00:24:15.62 who do you think is behind this? 00:24:15.65\00:24:16.99 Who do you think, just like in our lives, 00:24:17.02\00:24:18.35 who comes along when you need the Lord to be on your side, 00:24:18.39\00:24:21.19 when you need to place your trust in the Lord, 00:24:21.22\00:24:23.22 who comes along and says, "Don't think for one moment, 00:24:23.26\00:24:25.83 the Lord's on your side? 00:24:25.86\00:24:27.30 Don't think for one moment 00:24:27.33\00:24:28.66 that the Lord's going to hear you. 00:24:28.70\00:24:30.07 You've offended him, you know, you sinned too much. 00:24:30.10\00:24:32.10 You won't win him. 00:24:32.13\00:24:33.47 Don't do that, you know, leave the Lord alone, 00:24:33.50\00:24:34.90 because you know what, 00:24:34.94\00:24:36.27 he's not on your side at the moment. 00:24:36.30\00:24:37.84 So it goes on to say here at the end of this passage, 00:24:37.87\00:24:39.84 "Has any one of the gods of the nations 00:24:39.87\00:24:41.71 delivered its land 00:24:41.74\00:24:43.08 from the hand of the kings of Assyria? 00:24:43.11\00:24:45.08 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad?" 00:24:45.11\00:24:47.12 And he goes on basically to list and say, 00:24:47.15\00:24:50.02 basically, Hezekiah cannot save you 00:24:50.05\00:24:52.29 and because the gods of all the other countries 00:24:52.32\00:24:54.32 that we've conquered, 00:24:54.36\00:24:55.69 that Assyria has conquered, because gods, 00:24:55.72\00:24:57.96 those gods have not saved them. 00:24:57.99\00:24:59.33 What makes you think 00:24:59.36\00:25:00.70 that your God's going to save you? 00:25:00.73\00:25:02.10 He throws them under the bridge here, 00:25:02.13\00:25:04.07 under the rug. 00:25:04.10\00:25:05.43 So, my friends, the point that we can learn from this 00:25:05.47\00:25:07.17 is the point I get is when people try to tell us 00:25:07.20\00:25:10.47 and the devil tries to tell us don't trust in the Lord, 00:25:10.51\00:25:12.71 that's when we need to put our trust in the Lord. 00:25:12.74\00:25:14.38 So the question is what's going to happen 00:25:14.41\00:25:16.04 from this point on, how does the Lord respond? 00:25:16.08\00:25:17.78 How do the people respond? 00:25:17.81\00:25:19.15 That's what Shelley is going to do for us 00:25:19.18\00:25:20.52 on Tuesday's lesson, 00:25:20.55\00:25:21.88 but I think we're going to take a break. 00:25:21.92\00:25:23.39 Well you know what? 00:25:23.42\00:25:24.75 You've got my attention, 00:25:24.79\00:25:26.12 I guarantee you got the people's attention. 00:25:26.15\00:25:27.52 So stay right there. 00:25:27.56\00:25:28.89 We'll be right back. 00:25:28.92\00:25:30.26 Praise the Lord. 00:25:30.29\00:25:31.63 Ever wish you could watch 00:25:34.46\00:25:35.80 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:25:35.83\00:25:37.93 or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:27:37.05\00:27:41.09 We see in Isaiah 37:1, that when he hears, 00:27:41.12\00:27:46.03 Hezekiah hears this report, 00:27:46.06\00:27:48.56 here he is rebelling against Assyria. 00:27:48.60\00:27:51.40 Now they're saying, "Hey, off with your neck, 00:27:51.43\00:27:54.37 we're coming in for you. 00:27:54.40\00:27:55.77 Your God is no match for our gods. 00:27:55.80\00:27:59.14 You can't do anything about this. 00:27:59.17\00:28:01.64 So Hezekiah is shaken. 00:28:01.68\00:28:04.41 I mean, he's disturbed and what does he do? 00:28:04.45\00:28:07.52 He tears his robe, he puts on sackcloth and ashes. 00:28:07.55\00:28:12.42 And what this is was symbolizing, 00:28:12.45\00:28:15.09 not just his grief, 00:28:15.12\00:28:16.89 but repentance and contrition, 00:28:16.93\00:28:19.29 then it goes into the House of the Lord. 00:28:19.33\00:28:21.86 And you know, the temple was known 00:28:21.90\00:28:24.43 as the house of prayer. 00:28:24.47\00:28:26.47 So how appropriate was his response? 00:28:26.50\00:28:29.10 When we get disturbing news, we may mourn for a while. 00:28:29.14\00:28:33.98 That's right. 00:28:34.01\00:28:35.34 But let's come to our senses and get into the prayer mode. 00:28:35.38\00:28:41.22 So verse 2, what Hezekiah does 00:28:41.25\00:28:43.49 is he sends two of his officials, 00:28:43.52\00:28:45.65 and then some of the senior religious leaders, the elders. 00:28:45.69\00:28:51.19 He sends them to the Prophet Isaiah, 00:28:51.23\00:28:56.16 because what he's going to do, he wants Isaiah to pray. 00:28:56.20\00:29:00.44 And that was one of the main functions 00:29:00.47\00:29:02.77 of a prophet's role, 00:29:02.80\00:29:04.74 was intercessory prayer. 00:29:04.77\00:29:06.91 So in verse 3, what Hezekiah, I love this. 00:29:06.94\00:29:10.85 He compares his dilemma to a mother 00:29:10.88\00:29:13.72 who's in labor of birth. 00:29:13.75\00:29:15.55 In other words, what he's saying is, 00:29:15.58\00:29:18.22 "You know what? 00:29:18.25\00:29:19.59 I'm unable to, I mean, 00:29:19.62\00:29:21.56 I know Jerusalem needs to be delivered, 00:29:21.59\00:29:26.13 but I'm helpless." 00:29:26.16\00:29:27.76 He said, "I'm like a mother, who is in labor, but I've got, 00:29:27.80\00:29:32.23 I don't have the strength to complete the delivery." 00:29:32.27\00:29:36.07 So here these emissaries, go to Isaiah. 00:29:36.10\00:29:40.01 And they say, 00:29:40.04\00:29:41.38 "Hey, the Rabshakeh have belittled the Lord. 00:29:41.41\00:29:45.58 They have equipped or equated Him to pagan gods. 00:29:45.61\00:29:50.15 And they ask Isaiah, they say therefore, 00:29:50.19\00:29:52.95 because of this insult, 00:29:52.99\00:29:55.26 lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left. 00:29:55.29\00:29:57.89 What is the remnant? 00:29:57.93\00:29:59.26 Only Jerusalem. 00:29:59.29\00:30:00.70 Jerusalem is the only part that remained unconquered. 00:30:00.73\00:30:05.80 So, listen, how God speaks through Isaiah, 00:30:05.83\00:30:11.31 to encourage Hezekiah. 00:30:11.34\00:30:13.81 Isaiah 37:5-7. 00:30:13.84\00:30:15.74 "So the servants 00:30:15.78\00:30:17.11 of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 00:30:17.15\00:30:19.61 And Isaiah said to them, 00:30:19.65\00:30:21.48 'Thus shall you say to your master, 00:30:21.52\00:30:24.79 'Thus says the Lord: 00:30:24.82\00:30:26.89 'Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard.' " 00:30:26.92\00:30:32.13 Somebody who is hearing my voice today, 00:30:32.16\00:30:36.16 needs to know that do not be afraid 00:30:36.20\00:30:40.67 of the words you have heard. 00:30:40.70\00:30:43.00 It may be a diagnosis, it may be the bank, 00:30:43.04\00:30:46.47 I don't know what it is. 00:30:46.51\00:30:48.04 Don't be afraid, you turn to God. 00:30:48.08\00:30:50.75 He says, "With which the servants 00:30:50.78\00:30:52.45 of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me," 00:30:52.48\00:30:55.68 is what God is saying. 00:30:55.72\00:30:57.32 "Surely, I will send a spirit upon him," 00:30:57.35\00:31:00.49 upon Sennacherib, 00:31:00.52\00:31:02.02 "and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land. 00:31:02.06\00:31:04.96 And I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land." 00:31:04.99\00:31:10.53 The message was brief, but it was enough. 00:31:10.57\00:31:12.63 God's on the side of His people. 00:31:12.67\00:31:15.87 Praise the Lord. 00:31:15.90\00:31:17.24 So Isaiah is predicting 00:31:17.27\00:31:19.04 that Sennacherib's going to hear a rumor, 00:31:19.07\00:31:21.94 and it's going to distract him from his attack 00:31:21.98\00:31:24.35 on Judah and guess what? 00:31:24.38\00:31:25.88 That's exactly what happened. 00:31:25.91\00:31:27.52 Isaiah 37:10-12. 00:31:27.55\00:31:30.15 Sennacherib sends Hezekiah another threatening message, 00:31:30.19\00:31:35.32 he's not going to give up, 00:31:35.36\00:31:36.69 the devil doesn't give up very easily. 00:31:36.73\00:31:39.16 He says, "Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, 00:31:39.19\00:31:43.16 saying: 'Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you." 00:31:43.20\00:31:49.97 Has anyone ever said to you, 00:31:50.01\00:31:53.14 those promises of God are not for you? 00:31:53.17\00:31:56.18 God's deceiving you? 00:31:56.21\00:31:58.15 Let me tell you something. 00:31:58.18\00:31:59.68 Every promise of God is yes and amen in Christ Jesus. 00:31:59.71\00:32:03.25 Here in Jesus Christ, that's it. 00:32:03.28\00:32:06.12 He says, and now this is Sennacherib, 00:32:06.15\00:32:08.56 the king of Assyria, he says "Jerusalem." 00:32:08.59\00:32:11.56 He said, "Don't let your God deceive you saying 00:32:11.59\00:32:13.80 that Jerusalem shall not be given 00:32:13.83\00:32:15.46 into the hand of the king of Assyria." 00:32:15.50\00:32:16.93 Look! 00:32:16.97\00:32:18.30 You have heard what the kings of Assyria 00:32:18.33\00:32:20.07 have done to all the lands 00:32:20.10\00:32:21.50 by utterly destroying them, shall you be delivered?" 00:32:21.54\00:32:26.14 He says, "Have the gods 00:32:26.17\00:32:27.98 of the nations delivered those." 00:32:28.01\00:32:30.28 He's talking about those pagan nations, 00:32:30.31\00:32:31.91 those pagan gods. 00:32:31.95\00:32:33.31 Hey, in the past did they delivered those 00:32:33.35\00:32:36.82 whom my fathers have destroyed, 00:32:36.85\00:32:39.25 Gozan, Haran and Rezeph, 00:32:39.29\00:32:41.52 and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?" 00:32:41.56\00:32:45.23 So Sennacherib is comparing God, 00:32:45.26\00:32:51.53 the Creator God to mere idols. 00:32:51.57\00:32:55.47 And he's suggesting 00:32:55.50\00:32:57.31 that he's going to defeat 00:32:57.34\00:33:00.84 Yahweh's people that Sennacherib, 00:33:00.88\00:33:02.94 he is saying, "Hey, just like we defeated 00:33:02.98\00:33:05.11 all the rest of these people, we're going to defeat you. 00:33:05.15\00:33:07.25 You can't rely on your God." 00:33:07.28\00:33:09.88 So you know what Hezekiah does? 00:33:09.92\00:33:11.39 To me, this is an interesting comparison. 00:33:11.42\00:33:13.05 Let's look at Isaiah 37:15. 00:33:13.09\00:33:16.16 He's learned a lesson, 00:33:16.19\00:33:17.53 he's not going to sit around and mourn anymore. 00:33:17.56\00:33:20.10 You know, before he mourned and he put on the sackcloth. 00:33:20.13\00:33:24.57 And then he finally went into the temple of the Lord. 00:33:24.60\00:33:27.10 This time he goes directly to the temple of Lord, 00:33:27.14\00:33:30.31 and he spreads a message out before the Lord. 00:33:30.34\00:33:33.24 And he says Isaiah 37:15, 00:33:33.27\00:33:35.14 Hezekiah prayed to the Lord saying, 00:33:35.18\00:33:37.35 "O, Lord of hosts, God of Israel, 00:33:37.38\00:33:40.75 the one who dwells between the cherubim." 00:33:40.78\00:33:44.29 You know, he is speaking to God 00:33:44.32\00:33:48.22 as the sovereign God of the whole world. 00:33:48.26\00:33:50.59 He says, "You are the Lord of hosts, 00:33:50.63\00:33:53.40 the cherubim with the angelic, 00:33:53.43\00:33:55.60 powerful, angelic, heavenly creatures." 00:33:55.63\00:33:58.47 And they were often represented 00:33:58.50\00:34:00.50 as being close to his divine presence. 00:34:00.54\00:34:02.94 You remember, in the Holy of Holies, 00:34:02.97\00:34:06.71 the Ark of the Covenant, 00:34:06.74\00:34:08.08 there were two cherubim 00:34:08.11\00:34:09.54 that were over the throne where the mercy seats, 00:34:09.58\00:34:12.81 where Jesus, our God sat. 00:34:12.85\00:34:15.12 Well, that was what? 00:34:15.15\00:34:16.89 A copy of the heavenly so he... 00:34:16.92\00:34:19.85 Then listen to this. 00:34:19.89\00:34:22.06 He says, this is Isaiah, 00:34:22.09\00:34:23.73 "O Lord, You are God, You alone, 00:34:23.76\00:34:26.56 of all the kingdoms of the earth. 00:34:26.59\00:34:28.16 You have made heaven and earth." 00:34:28.20\00:34:30.33 He's appealing to Him as the creator, 00:34:30.37\00:34:32.70 "Incline Your ear and hear, O Lord, 00:34:32.73\00:34:36.04 open Your eyes, O Lord, 00:34:36.07\00:34:37.91 and see, hear all the words of Sennacherib, 00:34:37.94\00:34:40.31 which he has sent to reproach the living God." 00:34:40.34\00:34:44.18 And so, here Sennacherib, 00:34:44.21\00:34:46.95 the king of Assyria is mocking God. 00:34:46.98\00:34:49.95 But boy, Isaiah is saying, 00:34:49.98\00:34:52.15 "Lord, stand up, defend your honor." 00:34:52.19\00:34:54.76 Verse 18, "Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria, " 00:34:54.79\00:35:01.26 he's looking at history path, 00:35:01.30\00:35:03.03 "have laid waste 00:35:03.06\00:35:04.40 to all the nations and their lands, 00:35:04.43\00:35:06.20 and have cast their gods, 00:35:06.23\00:35:08.20 their idols into the fire, for they were not gods, 00:35:08.24\00:35:12.34 but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. 00:35:12.37\00:35:15.01 Therefore you have destroyed them. 00:35:15.04\00:35:18.81 Now therefore, O God," verse 20, 00:35:18.85\00:35:21.88 "Now therefore, O Lord our God, 00:35:21.92\00:35:24.19 save us from his hand, 00:35:24.22\00:35:26.45 that all the kingdoms of the earth 00:35:26.49\00:35:28.66 may know that You are the Lord, 00:35:28.69\00:35:32.36 You alone." 00:35:32.39\00:35:34.10 Hezekiah is appealing to God based on His glory. 00:35:34.13\00:35:39.33 Yes. 00:35:39.37\00:35:40.70 You know, that's what we always pray, 00:35:40.74\00:35:42.07 to God be the glory. 00:35:42.10\00:35:43.44 Amen. 00:35:43.47\00:35:44.81 This was the highest motivation of all, 00:35:44.84\00:35:48.71 for God to save Jerusalem was for His glory. 00:35:48.74\00:35:54.48 And Hezekiah wants the world to know that He alone is God. 00:35:54.52\00:35:59.49 You know what? One quick point. Well. 00:35:59.52\00:36:01.69 Sennacherib had attacked Hezekiah's strongest defense, 00:36:01.72\00:36:07.20 and that was his faith. 00:36:07.23\00:36:08.83 But what did Hezekiah do? 00:36:08.86\00:36:10.70 He didn't buckle under, don't buckle under. 00:36:10.73\00:36:13.00 That's right. 00:36:13.03\00:36:14.37 What you do is appeal to God and say, 00:36:14.40\00:36:16.30 "Lord, for Your glory." 00:36:16.34\00:36:17.67 Oh, good. Amen. 00:36:17.71\00:36:19.04 Thank you so much, Shelley, and Ryan, and Kenny, 00:36:19.07\00:36:21.64 for that outline of history. 00:36:21.68\00:36:23.51 We're going to dive into this section of the lesson 00:36:23.55\00:36:25.58 on Wednesday called "The Rest of The Story." 00:36:25.61\00:36:27.88 And one of the confirming aspects 00:36:27.92\00:36:29.32 of the Bible is his historical record. 00:36:29.35\00:36:31.75 Many books are written 00:36:31.79\00:36:33.25 that you cannot really trace its content. 00:36:33.29\00:36:36.52 The Book of Mormon is one of those 00:36:36.56\00:36:38.03 where the cities and names and coins that are mentioned 00:36:38.06\00:36:41.33 cannot be found in history. 00:36:41.36\00:36:42.96 But the Bible is a confirming book, 00:36:43.00\00:36:44.83 you can trace it back through the pages of history. 00:36:44.87\00:36:47.90 The other thing about the Bible that takes us 00:36:47.94\00:36:49.37 through the conquest of kingdoms, 00:36:49.40\00:36:51.07 the sequential records of kings, 00:36:51.11\00:36:53.14 both of Israel and Judah and other nations 00:36:53.17\00:36:55.41 that came up against the people of God, 00:36:55.44\00:36:57.65 which in fact, once again, 00:36:57.68\00:36:59.01 you can trace that through the pages of history. 00:36:59.05\00:37:01.75 It takes us through the highest and lowest trace of humanity, 00:37:01.78\00:37:04.22 which also shows us 00:37:04.25\00:37:05.59 that if the Bible was solely written by men, 00:37:05.62\00:37:08.09 it would never tell us anything bad about humanity, 00:37:08.12\00:37:11.36 confirming the fact 00:37:11.39\00:37:12.73 that God is showing us who we really are. 00:37:12.76\00:37:14.76 Therefore, men are not the origin of the Bible. 00:37:14.80\00:37:17.80 But this story in particular, 00:37:17.83\00:37:19.37 in Isaiah 37:21-38 00:37:19.40\00:37:23.61 takes us through the conquest of Sennacherib 00:37:23.64\00:37:26.21 then the attempts of further conquest 00:37:26.24\00:37:28.61 of Sennacherib, 00:37:28.64\00:37:29.98 then God's interposition in the behalf of His people. 00:37:30.01\00:37:32.85 So let's begin in verse 21. Let's break it down. 00:37:32.88\00:37:35.62 It starts with the prayer of Hezekiah 00:37:35.65\00:37:37.32 one who besieged God on behalf 00:37:37.35\00:37:39.45 when he saw 00:37:39.49\00:37:40.82 that he was in fact in a pickle, 00:37:40.86\00:37:42.92 that's the word I can use. 00:37:42.96\00:37:44.49 When he saw that this king coming up against him 00:37:44.53\00:37:46.80 was one that just was mowing down nations 00:37:46.83\00:37:49.06 like a John Deere tractor. 00:37:49.10\00:37:51.33 There was nobody able to stand against him. 00:37:51.37\00:37:53.54 But we find that God responds to Hezekiah's prayer. 00:37:53.57\00:37:57.94 Verse 21 of Chapter 37. 00:37:57.97\00:38:01.61 "Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, 00:38:01.64\00:38:05.35 'Thus says the Lord God of Israel, 00:38:05.38\00:38:07.58 because you have prayed to Me 00:38:07.62\00:38:08.95 against Sennacherib king of Assyria, 00:38:08.98\00:38:11.09 this is the word 00:38:11.12\00:38:12.45 which the Lord has spoken concerning him:' 00:38:12.49\00:38:14.52 that is Sennacherib, 00:38:14.56\00:38:15.92 'The virgin, the daughter of Zion, 00:38:15.96\00:38:17.36 Has despised you, laughed you to scorn, 00:38:17.39\00:38:19.93 the daughter of Jerusalem 00:38:19.96\00:38:21.30 has shaken her head behind your back!' " 00:38:21.33\00:38:23.06 In other words, 00:38:23.10\00:38:24.43 Jerusalem is mocking Sennacherib behind his back, 00:38:24.47\00:38:27.80 because they know something that Sennacherib does not know. 00:38:27.84\00:38:30.84 Let's go to verse 23. 00:38:30.87\00:38:32.77 "Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? 00:38:32.81\00:38:35.31 Against whom have you raised your voice, " 00:38:35.34\00:38:37.51 that is Sennacherib, who are you speaking against, 00:38:37.55\00:38:40.05 "and lifted up your eyes on high 00:38:40.08\00:38:42.08 against the Holy One of Israel." 00:38:42.12\00:38:44.32 Watch out when you mock God. 00:38:44.35\00:38:48.99 Be careful, God is not mocked. 00:38:49.02\00:38:50.53 Whatever a man sows that shall he reap. 00:38:50.56\00:38:53.80 So Sennacherib seeks to have victory 00:38:53.83\00:38:55.50 without even considering God. 00:38:55.53\00:38:57.63 Verse 24, "By your servants you have reproached the Lord, 00:38:57.67\00:39:01.20 and said, 'By the multitude of my chariots 00:39:01.24\00:39:03.44 I have come up to the height of the mountains, 00:39:03.47\00:39:05.47 to the limits of Lebanon, 00:39:05.51\00:39:06.84 I will cut down its tall cedars and its choice cypress trees, 00:39:06.88\00:39:10.11 I will enter its farthest height, 00:39:10.15\00:39:12.38 to its fruitful forest. 00:39:12.41\00:39:14.08 I have dug and drunk water, 00:39:14.12\00:39:15.75 and with the soles of my feet 00:39:15.78\00:39:17.12 I have dried up all the brooks of defense.' " 00:39:17.15\00:39:19.62 In other words, God is nothing you can do 00:39:19.65\00:39:20.99 to stop me. 00:39:21.02\00:39:22.36 Look what I've done so far. 00:39:22.39\00:39:24.39 Watch out. 00:39:24.43\00:39:25.76 God always reminds us that I've often said 00:39:25.79\00:39:27.60 make your word soft and sweet 00:39:27.63\00:39:29.43 because it's going to be difficult 00:39:29.46\00:39:30.80 to eat them otherwise. 00:39:30.83\00:39:33.13 Verse 26, 00:39:33.17\00:39:34.74 "Did you not hear long ago how I made it, 00:39:34.77\00:39:37.14 from ancient times that I formed it? 00:39:37.17\00:39:39.21 Now I have brought it to pass, 00:39:39.24\00:39:41.08 that you should be for crushing fortified cities 00:39:41.11\00:39:44.15 into heaps of ruins." 00:39:44.18\00:39:45.51 In other words, I've allowed you to do that. 00:39:45.55\00:39:46.88 Verse 27, 00:39:46.92\00:39:48.25 "Therefore the inhabitants had little power, 00:39:48.28\00:39:50.69 they were dismayed and confounded, 00:39:50.72\00:39:53.15 they were as the grass of the field 00:39:53.19\00:39:54.52 and the green herb, 00:39:54.56\00:39:55.89 as the grass on the housetops 00:39:55.92\00:39:57.36 and grain blighted before it's grown. 00:39:57.39\00:40:01.03 But I know your dwelling place, 00:40:01.06\00:40:03.06 your going out and your coming in, 00:40:03.10\00:40:04.73 and your rage against Me." 00:40:04.77\00:40:06.10 In other words, you may think that I'm not watching 00:40:06.13\00:40:08.30 but I've got you on the clock. 00:40:08.34\00:40:10.47 Verse 29, "Because you rage against Me 00:40:10.51\00:40:12.77 and your tumult have come up to My ears, 00:40:12.81\00:40:15.14 therefore I will put My hook in your nose 00:40:15.18\00:40:18.11 and My bridle in your lips, 00:40:18.15\00:40:20.05 And I will turn you back by the way which you came." ' 00:40:20.08\00:40:22.38 So God now says this to Sennacherib, 00:40:22.42\00:40:24.39 here's a sign of my victory coming. 00:40:24.42\00:40:27.26 Verse 30, "This shall be a sign to you: 00:40:27.29\00:40:29.79 You shall eat this year such as grows of itself, 00:40:29.82\00:40:32.19 and the second year what springs from the same, 00:40:32.23\00:40:34.36 Also the third year sow and reap, 00:40:34.40\00:40:36.00 plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them. 00:40:36.03\00:40:38.63 And the remnant 00:40:38.67\00:40:40.00 who have escaped of the house of Judah 00:40:40.04\00:40:41.40 shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. 00:40:41.44\00:40:45.87 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant." 00:40:45.91\00:40:47.58 In other words, 00:40:47.61\00:40:48.94 you're not going to be able to stop 00:40:48.98\00:40:50.31 my people's progress. 00:40:50.35\00:40:51.91 "And those who escape from Mount Zion, 00:40:51.95\00:40:54.15 the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. 00:40:54.18\00:40:56.95 "Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: 00:40:56.99\00:40:59.92 'He shall not come into this city, 00:40:59.95\00:41:02.12 nor shoot an arrow there, 00:41:02.16\00:41:03.49 nor come before it with shield, 00:41:03.53\00:41:04.86 nor build a siege mound against it." 00:41:04.89\00:41:07.80 And I love verse 34. 00:41:07.83\00:41:09.73 "By the way that he came, 00:41:09.76\00:41:11.47 by the same way he shall return, 00:41:11.50\00:41:13.54 and he shall not come into this city,' 00:41:13.57\00:41:15.84 says the Lord.' " 00:41:15.87\00:41:17.21 This city is My city. That's right. 00:41:17.24\00:41:19.41 I've got the doors barred. That's right. 00:41:19.44\00:41:21.51 So God reminds Sennacherib 00:41:21.54\00:41:23.31 of His divine power to defeat Him. 00:41:23.35\00:41:26.25 Verse 35, "For I will defend this city, 00:41:26.28\00:41:30.12 to save it for My own sake 00:41:30.15\00:41:31.95 and for My servant David's sake.' 00:41:31.99\00:41:34.72 Then the angel of the Lord went out, 00:41:34.76\00:41:37.99 and killed in the camp of the Assyrians 185,000, 00:41:38.03\00:41:43.20 and when people arose early in the morning, 00:41:43.23\00:41:45.33 there were the corpses, all dead." 00:41:45.37\00:41:47.04 And by the way, they were not 185,000 funerals either. 00:41:47.07\00:41:49.54 That's right. 00:41:49.57\00:41:50.91 They just decomposed where they fell. 00:41:50.94\00:41:53.58 Then Sennacherib was forced to acknowledge 00:41:53.61\00:41:55.41 the power of God. 00:41:55.44\00:41:56.78 "So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, 00:41:56.81\00:42:00.35 returned home, and remained at Nineveh. 00:42:00.38\00:42:02.88 Now it came to pass, 00:42:02.92\00:42:04.25 as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his God 00:42:04.29\00:42:07.32 that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer 00:42:07.36\00:42:11.89 struck him down with the sword, 00:42:11.93\00:42:13.66 and they escaped into the land of Ararat. 00:42:13.70\00:42:16.26 And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place." 00:42:16.30\00:42:20.90 The Lord not only told him, "Go so far, but no further." 00:42:20.94\00:42:24.94 Sennacherib found an end at the hand of his own family. 00:42:24.97\00:42:28.18 Amen. 00:42:28.21\00:42:29.54 You see, he was trying to get rid of God's family, 00:42:29.58\00:42:31.45 but God used his family to get rid of him. 00:42:31.48\00:42:33.88 So now, according to the reports, 00:42:33.92\00:42:35.52 we find here is Sennacherib, scholars often say that, 00:42:35.55\00:42:39.89 you know, he had so many conquests, 00:42:39.92\00:42:41.79 that he could have easily lined the walls of his palaces, 00:42:41.82\00:42:45.03 with all the reminders of his conquest. 00:42:45.06\00:42:47.36 But when God brought him to defeat, 00:42:47.40\00:42:49.70 there was nothing to align. 00:42:49.73\00:42:51.07 The only thing 00:42:51.10\00:42:52.43 that was on the walls of his palaces 00:42:52.47\00:42:53.80 maybe were some of his victories, 00:42:53.84\00:42:56.67 but his own family brought him to defeat. 00:42:56.71\00:42:59.21 And I like the way that Ellen White says it 00:42:59.24\00:43:00.71 in the book Prophets and Kings, 00:43:00.74\00:43:02.68 she says on page 361, 00:43:02.71\00:43:05.05 "Also, if Sennacherib had conquered Jerusalem, 00:43:05.08\00:43:08.82 he would have deported the population 00:43:08.85\00:43:10.62 in such a way that Judah 00:43:10.65\00:43:11.99 would have lost its identity as northern Israel did. 00:43:12.02\00:43:16.42 From one perspective, 00:43:16.46\00:43:17.79 then there would have been no Jewish people 00:43:17.83\00:43:20.36 to whom the Messiah could be born, 00:43:20.40\00:43:22.50 their story would have ended right there. 00:43:22.53\00:43:25.83 But God kept hope alive." Amen. 00:43:25.87\00:43:29.30 What we don't understand is God, 00:43:29.34\00:43:32.67 it was always the devil's aim. 00:43:32.71\00:43:34.14 And I think I said this in a prior lesson, 00:43:34.18\00:43:36.24 that that divine seed 00:43:36.28\00:43:37.85 was always Satan's attempt to eradicate from the line, 00:43:37.88\00:43:41.42 from the lineage 00:43:41.45\00:43:42.78 that would eventually be the line 00:43:42.82\00:43:44.15 through which Christ would come. 00:43:44.19\00:43:45.52 But God is the defender of His people. 00:43:45.55\00:43:48.66 God sees the end of a thing 00:43:48.69\00:43:50.43 before we see the beginning of it. 00:43:50.46\00:43:52.23 God knows the hearts of men, while we only know their words, 00:43:52.26\00:43:56.06 God sees their final deeds, 00:43:56.10\00:43:57.60 while we only see their present deeds, 00:43:57.63\00:44:00.04 and God prevents what He knows 00:44:00.07\00:44:01.97 that we cannot endure. 00:44:02.00\00:44:04.07 Because the question was asked, 00:44:04.11\00:44:05.81 was it fear that these Assyrian soldiers 00:44:05.84\00:44:07.94 who just happened to be born 00:44:07.98\00:44:09.34 where they were to die in mass like this? 00:44:09.38\00:44:12.88 How do you personally understand 00:44:12.91\00:44:15.72 the Lord's actions here? 00:44:15.75\00:44:17.62 God sees the end from the beginning. 00:44:17.65\00:44:20.36 He knows men's intentions before men carry them out. 00:44:20.39\00:44:23.53 So three very important points. 00:44:23.56\00:44:25.56 The things that are unknown to us 00:44:25.59\00:44:27.20 are known to God. 00:44:27.23\00:44:28.56 His sovereignty includes omniscience, 00:44:28.60\00:44:30.43 meaning God knows all. 00:44:30.47\00:44:32.73 Deuteronomy 29:29, 00:44:32.77\00:44:34.94 "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, 00:44:34.97\00:44:37.17 but those things which are revealed 00:44:37.21\00:44:38.57 belong to us and to our children forever, 00:44:38.61\00:44:41.11 that we may do all the words of this law." 00:44:41.14\00:44:44.81 In other words, be careful to follow God 00:44:44.85\00:44:46.51 because He's the one that knows the end from the beginning. 00:44:46.55\00:44:49.48 But He doesn't program us for our future. 00:44:49.52\00:44:52.29 He still gives us that free moral agency 00:44:52.32\00:44:55.39 to fit into the end-time scenario, 00:44:55.42\00:44:57.16 which in fact is, "I'm going to win. 00:44:57.19\00:44:59.46 It's just up to you to decide 00:44:59.49\00:45:00.83 if you're going to be on the winning side." 00:45:00.86\00:45:02.23 God has not programmed humanity just to make it clear, 00:45:02.26\00:45:04.57 we are not predestined to do what we do, 00:45:04.60\00:45:07.17 we still have free moral agency. 00:45:07.20\00:45:08.64 Secondly, God sees the heart and intentions 00:45:08.67\00:45:11.44 before the aspirations are carried out. 00:45:11.47\00:45:13.94 Hebrews 4:12, 00:45:13.98\00:45:15.78 "For the Word of God is living and powerful, 00:45:15.81\00:45:17.95 and sharper than any two edged sword, 00:45:17.98\00:45:20.08 piercing even to the division of soul and spirit 00:45:20.12\00:45:23.08 of joints and marrow 00:45:23.12\00:45:24.45 and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents 00:45:24.49\00:45:27.76 of the heart." 00:45:27.79\00:45:29.12 God knows our hearts. 00:45:29.16\00:45:30.56 Lord, please. 00:45:30.59\00:45:31.93 That's why David's said, 00:45:31.96\00:45:33.29 "May the words of my mouth 00:45:33.33\00:45:34.86 and the meditations of my heart be acceptable? 00:45:34.90\00:45:39.83 Sometimes we look at a person say, 00:45:39.87\00:45:41.37 Oh, we don't say it. 00:45:41.40\00:45:43.54 But God says... 00:45:43.57\00:45:46.37 Like Kenny, Whoo, don't watch out. 00:45:46.41\00:45:49.51 Don't do that. Stop thinking that. 00:45:49.54\00:45:51.61 God knows. 00:45:51.65\00:45:52.98 And finally, God sees the end from the beginning. 00:45:53.01\00:45:55.78 How can He do that? Isaiah 46:9-10. 00:45:55.82\00:45:58.85 Remember the former things of old, 00:45:58.89\00:46:00.39 just like he was reminding Sennacherib, remember this? 00:46:00.42\00:46:03.19 He says, "For I am God and there is no other, 00:46:03.22\00:46:05.23 I am God and there is none like Me, 00:46:05.26\00:46:07.53 declaring the end from the beginning 00:46:07.56\00:46:09.40 and from ancient times, 00:46:09.43\00:46:11.57 things that are not yet done saying, " 00:46:11.60\00:46:14.64 also to Sennacherib, 00:46:14.67\00:46:16.00 "My counsel shall stand and I will do all my pleasure." 00:46:16.04\00:46:19.57 Amen. 00:46:19.61\00:46:20.94 Thank you so much, Pastor John, and Shelley, and Ryan, 00:46:20.98\00:46:23.61 and Pastor Kenny, what an incredible study. 00:46:23.65\00:46:26.18 I am pumped up. All right. 00:46:26.21\00:46:27.55 Just to think my God is omnipotent, 00:46:27.58\00:46:30.35 and omniscient 00:46:30.39\00:46:31.72 and all knowing and all powerful, 00:46:31.75\00:46:33.76 and He can do anything. 00:46:33.79\00:46:35.49 You think about the children of Judah there 00:46:35.52\00:46:39.09 surrounded by an enemy 00:46:39.13\00:46:40.96 that had conquered every other country. 00:46:41.00\00:46:43.77 And yet God showed up. 00:46:43.80\00:46:45.33 Were they defenseless? Absolutely. 00:46:45.37\00:46:47.17 Could they fight back? No. 00:46:47.20\00:46:49.14 But God showed up, and He fought on their behalf. 00:46:49.17\00:46:52.61 I love the end of that chapter. 00:46:52.64\00:46:54.88 That's incredible. 00:46:54.91\00:46:56.24 I have Isaiah 38 and 39. 00:46:56.28\00:46:59.25 Thursday's lesson is, "In Sickness and in Wealth, " 00:46:59.28\00:47:03.52 which is kind of cute 00:47:03.55\00:47:04.89 'cause you think when you do marriage vows, 00:47:04.92\00:47:06.29 in sickness and in health, 00:47:06.32\00:47:08.22 but this is in sickness and in wealth 00:47:08.26\00:47:09.92 and you will see why in a moment. 00:47:09.96\00:47:11.69 Isaiah 30, of course, 7 00:47:11.73\00:47:14.03 ends with the deliverance of Jerusalem 00:47:14.06\00:47:16.13 and the children of Judah because of Isaiah's message 00:47:16.16\00:47:18.47 because of Hezekiah's faith and prayer, 00:47:18.50\00:47:21.24 because God stood up and defended His people 00:47:21.27\00:47:23.87 and the honor of His name, as Shelley brought out. 00:47:23.91\00:47:28.91 We look at Isaiah 38, 00:47:28.94\00:47:30.58 as Hezekiah's miraculous healing, 00:47:30.61\00:47:33.21 we won't read the chapter, but in a nutshell, 00:47:33.25\00:47:36.25 he becomes sick unto death. 00:47:36.28\00:47:37.62 That's in Isaiah 38:1. 00:47:37.65\00:47:39.75 And Isaiah, the prophet goes into Hezekiah, 00:47:39.79\00:47:43.36 because Hezekiah is about ready to die. 00:47:43.39\00:47:45.23 And Isaiah says, "Set your house in order, 00:47:45.26\00:47:47.83 you are going to die." 00:47:47.86\00:47:49.66 Yes. 00:47:49.70\00:47:51.03 And then Isaiah leaves. 00:47:51.07\00:47:52.40 And the Bible says in verse 3 that, 00:47:52.43\00:47:54.30 verse 2 Hezekiah turns his face to the wall. 00:47:54.34\00:47:57.54 He's upset, he's hurt. 00:47:57.57\00:47:59.47 He doesn't want to die. 00:47:59.51\00:48:00.84 Who of us would want that? That's right now. 00:48:00.88\00:48:02.78 Okay, set your house in order, Jill, you're going to die. 00:48:02.81\00:48:05.28 You don't want to hear that. 00:48:05.31\00:48:06.95 We want to live, 00:48:06.98\00:48:08.32 I'm sure he wanted to continue serving God. 00:48:08.35\00:48:11.85 And so he set his face to the wall and he prayed 00:48:11.89\00:48:14.32 God, remember how I've walked in Your ways, 00:48:14.36\00:48:17.63 with a loyal heart 00:48:17.66\00:48:18.99 and I have done what is good in Your sight." 00:48:19.03\00:48:20.40 And Hezekiah wept bitterly. 00:48:20.43\00:48:23.06 So, God came to Isaiah, and said, "Okay, go back, 00:48:23.10\00:48:27.27 you have a different message for the king." 00:48:27.30\00:48:29.60 So he went back in 00:48:29.64\00:48:30.97 with a much more pleasant message 00:48:31.01\00:48:32.54 to the king's ears, 00:48:32.57\00:48:33.91 and said that the Lord is going to heal you. 00:48:33.94\00:48:35.94 And then Hezekiah asks for a sign. 00:48:35.98\00:48:38.98 And the sign that he asked for was what? 00:48:39.01\00:48:42.08 That the sundial would go backwards, 00:48:42.12\00:48:44.99 not forwards, but backwards 10 degrees. 00:48:45.02\00:48:49.12 Now remember, Hezekiah's dad that would have been King Ahaz. 00:48:49.16\00:48:52.66 The Lord told King Ahaz asked for a sign. 00:48:52.69\00:48:55.46 And Ahaz refused to ask for a sign. 00:48:55.50\00:48:58.10 He chose instead to trust in Assyrian power. 00:48:58.13\00:49:01.04 And look where that got them. 00:49:01.07\00:49:02.77 Hezekiah, he asked for a sign. 00:49:02.80\00:49:06.01 He chose to trust in God for deliverance, 00:49:06.04\00:49:10.05 not just from the Assyrian siege 00:49:10.08\00:49:13.11 and Assyrian power, 00:49:13.15\00:49:14.68 but for his own healing. 00:49:14.72\00:49:17.09 When I used to study this, 00:49:17.12\00:49:18.69 I always thought chapter 38 came after chapter 37. 00:49:18.72\00:49:21.72 And it does, 00:49:21.76\00:49:23.09 but if you look at verses 5 and 6, 00:49:23.12\00:49:24.56 you see that it runs concurrent. 00:49:24.59\00:49:27.83 In other words it says in verse 5, 00:49:27.86\00:49:31.73 this is Isaiah telling Hezekiah, 00:49:31.77\00:49:34.27 "I've heard your prayer, I've seen your tears, 00:49:34.30\00:49:36.17 I will add 15 years to your life. 00:49:36.20\00:49:40.28 I will deliver you and this city 00:49:40.31\00:49:43.11 from the hand of the king of Assyria, 00:49:43.14\00:49:44.95 and I will defend the city." 00:49:44.98\00:49:46.31 So that means the siege 00:49:46.35\00:49:48.18 and this crisis is running concurrent 00:49:48.22\00:49:51.55 with Isaiah sick unto death. 00:49:51.59\00:49:55.42 We look at this miraculous healing 00:49:55.46\00:49:57.96 and what happens 00:49:57.99\00:49:59.33 and then I kind of wish it ended in Chapter 38. 00:49:59.36\00:50:03.93 Chapter 39, I wish it just stopped there. 00:50:03.97\00:50:07.90 And we didn't even have 39. 00:50:07.94\00:50:09.44 And we just jumped over to Isaiah Chapter 40. 00:50:09.47\00:50:11.87 Because in Chapter 39, in Babylon, 00:50:11.91\00:50:14.71 they studied the celestial bodies, 00:50:14.74\00:50:16.68 they studied what happened in the heavens, 00:50:16.71\00:50:18.58 and they saw that the, 00:50:18.61\00:50:19.95 the sundial had gone back 10 degrees, 00:50:19.98\00:50:22.22 and they said, what happened 00:50:22.25\00:50:23.89 and they got news 00:50:23.92\00:50:25.39 that Hezekiah had been miraculously healed 00:50:25.42\00:50:27.99 by God. 00:50:28.02\00:50:29.36 And that this was, 00:50:29.39\00:50:30.73 sun was a direct result of God's intervention. 00:50:30.76\00:50:33.93 And so they traveled to Jerusalem 00:50:33.96\00:50:36.56 to meet with Hezekiah 00:50:36.60\00:50:38.30 probably to learn a bit more about this God. 00:50:38.33\00:50:40.87 And instead of talking about this God, 00:50:40.90\00:50:43.41 Hezekiah showed everything in his house, 00:50:43.44\00:50:48.54 in his Jerusalem, the treasure. 00:50:48.58\00:50:52.25 Pridefully, he showed everything. 00:50:52.28\00:50:54.32 And we know this is what about 701 BC, 100 years later, 00:50:54.35\00:50:59.62 the same country, 00:50:59.65\00:51:00.99 the Babylonians would come 00:51:01.02\00:51:03.63 and take captive the people of Judah 00:51:03.66\00:51:05.89 and take a lot of those treasures 00:51:05.93\00:51:07.50 that they had seen 100 years ago, 00:51:07.53\00:51:09.63 they would take that out of the country. 00:51:09.66\00:51:11.77 Also during this time... 00:51:11.80\00:51:13.13 We don't see this in Isaiah, 00:51:13.17\00:51:14.50 but you can see this 00:51:14.54\00:51:15.87 if you read 2 Kings and Chronicles. 00:51:15.90\00:51:17.47 You'll see that the King's son Manasseh 00:51:17.51\00:51:19.34 was born during this time, 00:51:19.37\00:51:21.18 because when Hezekiah died, his son Manasseh reigned. 00:51:21.21\00:51:25.71 And he was only 12 when he reigned, 00:51:25.75\00:51:27.42 which means that he was conceived 00:51:27.45\00:51:30.32 after Hezekiah was miraculously healed. 00:51:30.35\00:51:34.36 And I wonder about that, too. 00:51:34.39\00:51:36.66 Let's look at six lessons. 00:51:36.69\00:51:38.56 We'll talk about that. 00:51:38.59\00:51:39.93 That's lesson number six, 00:51:39.96\00:51:41.30 six lessons that I see from this passage 00:51:41.33\00:51:42.73 in Isaiah 38 and 39. 00:51:42.76\00:51:44.37 Lesson number one, 00:51:44.40\00:51:45.73 God shows up when it looks the darkest. 00:51:45.77\00:51:48.74 Are you in a dark place? Do you need deliverance? 00:51:48.77\00:51:51.94 God specializes in turning darkness into light 00:51:51.97\00:51:54.94 and despair into hope, discouragement into victory. 00:51:54.98\00:51:59.18 With God, nothing is impossible. 00:51:59.21\00:52:02.45 Jeremiah 32:27, he said, "Behold, I'm the Lord, 00:52:02.48\00:52:05.35 the God of all flesh. 00:52:05.39\00:52:07.09 Is there anything too hard for me?" 00:52:07.12\00:52:10.13 We see this twofold attack I already referenced. 00:52:10.16\00:52:12.69 The siege against Jerusalem by the Assyrians 00:52:12.73\00:52:14.86 and Hezekiah being about ready to die. 00:52:14.90\00:52:17.47 The SDA Bible commentary volume 4, page 240 says this. 00:52:17.50\00:52:22.24 "Satan was determined 00:52:22.27\00:52:24.34 to bring about both the death of Hezekiah 00:52:24.37\00:52:27.34 and the fall of Jerusalem, 00:52:27.38\00:52:29.84 reasoning, that of Hezekiah were out of the way, 00:52:29.88\00:52:32.88 his efforts at reform would cease 00:52:32.91\00:52:35.12 and the fall of Jerusalem 00:52:35.15\00:52:36.55 would be more readily accomplished." 00:52:36.58\00:52:38.92 Was Satan was thwarted in both of those efforts 00:52:38.95\00:52:42.52 because God shows up when it looks the darkest. 00:52:42.56\00:52:45.23 Lesson number two, 00:52:45.26\00:52:46.59 God delights to hear and answer the prayers of His children. 00:52:46.63\00:52:50.87 Amen. 00:52:50.90\00:52:52.23 John 16:24, 00:52:52.27\00:52:53.60 "Until now you've asked nothing in My name, 00:52:53.64\00:52:56.97 ask and you will receive that your joy may be full." 00:52:57.01\00:53:02.31 Hezekiah, remember he turned his face 00:53:02.34\00:53:04.25 to the wall after Isaiah had said 00:53:04.28\00:53:05.71 you're going to die. 00:53:05.75\00:53:07.08 This is in Isaiah 38:2-5. 00:53:07.12\00:53:09.58 "And he said, 'Lord, remember how I've walked in Your ways 00:53:09.62\00:53:14.66 and I have kept and done what is good in Your sight." 00:53:14.69\00:53:18.23 And verse 4, "And the word of the Lord 00:53:18.26\00:53:19.93 came to Isaiah saying, 00:53:19.96\00:53:21.30 'Go and tell Hezekiah, 00:53:21.33\00:53:22.66 thus says the Lord, the God of David, 00:53:22.70\00:53:24.53 your Father, I've heard your prayer. 00:53:24.57\00:53:26.10 I've seen your tears, 00:53:26.13\00:53:27.54 I will add to your days 15 years.' " 00:53:27.57\00:53:30.74 God heard Hezekiah's prayers 00:53:30.77\00:53:33.11 for deliverance from the Assyrian siege, 00:53:33.14\00:53:35.28 and God heard Hezekiah's prayer, 00:53:35.31\00:53:38.11 to be healed and to live longer. 00:53:38.15\00:53:41.12 Lesson number three, 00:53:41.15\00:53:42.48 God deals gently and kindly 00:53:42.52\00:53:45.09 with our small measure of faith. 00:53:45.12\00:53:47.32 You know, Romans 12, Paul says in Romans 12:3, 00:53:47.36\00:53:50.23 "God has dealt to each one, a measure of faith." 00:53:50.26\00:53:55.50 Hezekiah asked for the sign and God didn't burn him or say, 00:53:55.53\00:53:59.10 why'd you ask for a sign? 00:53:59.13\00:54:00.54 He didn't say you should have more faith. 00:54:00.57\00:54:02.27 What did he say? 00:54:02.30\00:54:03.64 He gave him the sign 00:54:03.67\00:54:05.01 and He granted him that healing. 00:54:05.04\00:54:08.41 Lesson number four, 00:54:08.44\00:54:09.78 God heals through prayer and natural remedies. 00:54:09.81\00:54:13.48 Another word, 00:54:13.52\00:54:14.85 sometimes it's a combination of prayer and human effort. 00:54:14.88\00:54:18.55 We see that in Isaiah 38:29, 00:54:18.59\00:54:20.79 not just the prayer worked, and the prayer did work, 00:54:20.82\00:54:23.83 but God used some natural remedies with it. 00:54:23.86\00:54:25.99 Verse 21, "Isaiah said, 'Let them take a lump of figs, 00:54:26.03\00:54:29.83 apply it as a poultice on the boil, 00:54:29.86\00:54:32.53 and he shall recover." 00:54:32.57\00:54:35.27 There's a combination that I see there 00:54:35.30\00:54:37.41 between this natural remedy as well as the prayer. 00:54:37.44\00:54:41.98 We see that sometimes when Jesus healed people, 00:54:42.01\00:54:44.05 think of John Chapter 9, 00:54:44.08\00:54:46.38 remember the man who was born blind. 00:54:46.41\00:54:47.92 Jesus could have just said "I heal you, " 00:54:47.95\00:54:49.45 and he was instantly healed, instead he spat on the dirt, 00:54:49.48\00:54:52.62 mix the mud for the men's eyes, then said, 00:54:52.65\00:54:56.02 "Now you do something. 00:54:56.06\00:54:57.39 You go wash in the pool of Siloam." 00:54:57.43\00:54:59.76 So Sometimes there's that combination 00:54:59.79\00:55:01.76 that we see in that healing. 00:55:01.80\00:55:04.17 Lesson number five, 00:55:04.20\00:55:05.57 "Beware, lest you forget what God has done for you." 00:55:05.60\00:55:11.17 And the joy of Hezekiah's healing 00:55:11.21\00:55:13.38 and the joy of his freedom from that Assyrian siege, 00:55:13.41\00:55:16.71 he forgot it was God that had healed him. 00:55:16.75\00:55:18.91 He forgot it was God 00:55:18.95\00:55:20.28 that had saved the city of Jerusalem. 00:55:20.32\00:55:22.92 And he, instead of giving glory to God, 00:55:22.95\00:55:26.99 when the Babylonians came to Jerusalem, 00:55:27.02\00:55:29.72 he gave glory to himself 00:55:29.76\00:55:31.63 and what Jerusalem had done there. 00:55:31.66\00:55:35.70 Lesson number six, 00:55:35.73\00:55:38.50 beware to ask for something against God's will. 00:55:38.53\00:55:42.74 That's right. 00:55:42.77\00:55:44.11 Was it God's will to heal Hezekiah? 00:55:44.14\00:55:45.67 We only have 36 seconds. 00:55:45.71\00:55:47.04 Now we have no time to really unpack that. 00:55:47.08\00:55:50.51 But I do know 00:55:50.55\00:55:51.88 that Manasseh wouldn't have been born 00:55:51.91\00:55:53.25 if Hezekiah had lived, 00:55:53.28\00:55:54.88 that Hezekiah failed to train him 00:55:54.92\00:55:56.69 in the later years of his life, 00:55:56.72\00:55:58.59 or was it somehow a consequence 00:55:58.62\00:56:00.79 as a result of Hezekiah asking for more life? 00:56:00.82\00:56:05.43 Sometimes I think God gives us maybe what we've asked for, 00:56:05.46\00:56:08.26 even if it's not what is best for us. 00:56:08.30\00:56:11.67 That's why I think when we pray, 00:56:11.70\00:56:13.50 we always say, God, 00:56:13.54\00:56:15.70 in accordance with Your will, not what I want, 00:56:15.74\00:56:18.81 but Your will be done. 00:56:18.84\00:56:20.31 Amen. 00:56:20.34\00:56:21.68 Praise the Lord. 00:56:21.71\00:56:23.04 Awesome lesson. 00:56:23.08\00:56:24.41 I think we'll have to say panel awesome lesson. 00:56:24.45\00:56:25.78 We pray, it will be a blessing to you folks, too. 00:56:25.81\00:56:27.88 We just have a few minutes. 00:56:27.92\00:56:29.25 But I think a good last thought 00:56:29.28\00:56:31.02 that the Lord gives you please. 00:56:31.05\00:56:32.62 Absolutely. 00:56:32.65\00:56:33.99 You know from Monday's lesson, 00:56:34.02\00:56:35.66 I just want to encourage our viewers 00:56:35.69\00:56:37.16 that, you know, don't let, 00:56:37.19\00:56:38.69 don't allow the enemy to convince you 00:56:38.73\00:56:41.50 that the Lord is not on your side 00:56:41.53\00:56:43.93 or that the Lord is not going to answer you 00:56:43.97\00:56:45.77 or that you should not seek Him. 00:56:45.80\00:56:47.74 I think that's a very bad mistake. 00:56:47.77\00:56:49.84 We need to go to the Lord always, 00:56:49.87\00:56:51.21 even when we don't feel worthy, humble ourselves before Him, 00:56:51.24\00:56:54.34 pray to Him. 00:56:54.38\00:56:55.71 He will hear us and He will forgive us. 00:56:55.74\00:56:57.08 Praise God. 00:56:57.11\00:56:58.45 Amen and I just ditto that 00:56:58.48\00:56:59.81 that circumstances might shake us, 00:56:59.85\00:57:03.65 but God will never forsake us. 00:57:03.69\00:57:05.75 Amen. 00:57:05.79\00:57:07.19 And the rest of the story in the battles of your life, 00:57:07.22\00:57:10.33 every confrontation you're going to face in life. 00:57:10.36\00:57:12.89 Remember, Psalm 118:6, "The Lord is on my side, 00:57:12.93\00:57:17.70 I will not fear what can man do to me. 00:57:17.73\00:57:21.60 But thanks be to God 00:57:21.64\00:57:22.97 who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 00:57:23.00\00:57:26.44 1 Corinthians 15:57. Amen. 00:57:26.47\00:57:29.38 I think when it looks the darkest, 00:57:29.41\00:57:30.75 and it looks like the world is coming against you, 00:57:30.78\00:57:32.61 God will show up 00:57:32.65\00:57:33.98 and He will fight your battles for you. 00:57:34.02\00:57:35.35 Amen. 00:57:35.38\00:57:36.72 This has been an awesome lesson. 00:57:36.75\00:57:38.09 As far as I'm concerned, it's been a blessing to me. 00:57:38.12\00:57:39.62 Pray it's been a blessing to you, too. 00:57:39.65\00:57:41.46 We want to make sure not that you joined us today. 00:57:41.49\00:57:43.16 That's wonderful. 00:57:43.19\00:57:44.53 But we want you to join us 00:57:44.56\00:57:45.89 for lesson number eight next time. 00:57:45.93\00:57:47.46 We're going to be talking about comfort my people, 00:57:47.50\00:57:50.40 if we ever lived in a day and hour 00:57:50.43\00:57:52.03 of earth's history where we need comfort, 00:57:52.07\00:57:54.24 it's right now 00:57:54.27\00:57:55.74 and so I know next week's lesson 00:57:55.77\00:57:57.87 will be such a blessing to you. 00:57:57.91\00:57:59.24 So make sure you join us.
