that some people
don't like to talk about,

an uncomfortable subject.

And that is the topic of death.

Because ultimately,

people don't want
to face the reality

that unless
Jesus comes back again,

each and every one
of us will see death.

And people have
questions about death,

they wonder, they
speculate as to is that the end,

and some people believe
that once you die, that's it.

There's nothing
else beyond the grave

or there's nothing else beyond
or after the point of death.

And that's essentially

what the point of
our lesson is all about,

Sunday's lesson which I think

"The Fate of the Dead."

And we're going to

In fact, I don't even know

if I'm going to get
through all of these,

The Bible has such an abundance

of messages and
passages and scriptures

on not only what happens to us

when we die at
the point of death.

In other words,
the state of the dead.

But the beautiful
promise, and I like to say,

I like to call it
that the beautiful promise

because some people
when they think of death,
00:05:07.40\00:05:09.27
they think of, you know,
oh, that's the end, that's it.
00:05:09.30\00:05:11.97
But yet the Bible says,
00:05:12.01\00:05:13.34
you know, Paul
says to die is to gain.
00:05:13.38\00:05:15.48
You know, and lot of
people don't know this,
00:05:15.51\00:05:17.81
they don't, they're not aware
00:05:17.85\00:05:19.25
that God has promised
us that beyond the grave,
00:05:19.28\00:05:21.45
He has
something prepared for us.
00:05:21.48\00:05:23.95
So the fate of the
dead, Sunday's lesson.

I want to start in a passage

that many people
probably wouldn't start.

But I think it's a
great starting point.

And I want to read a passage

that's actually
often misunderstood,

based on one
verse from this passage,

but I think there's also a
beautiful, powerful message

that comes from this
particular starting point today.

So 2 Corinthians Chapter 5.

And I'm going to begin
right there in verse 1.
00:05:50.08\00:05:53.18
The Bible says,
00:05:53.21\00:05:54.55
"For we know that
00:05:54.58\00:05:55.92
if our earthly
house, this tent,"
00:05:55.95\00:05:59.19
and I just want to pause there
00:05:59.22\00:06:00.56
and be clear about
what we're talking about.
00:06:00.59\00:06:01.92
When Paul's talking about
the earthly house, this tent,
00:06:01.96\00:06:05.09
he's referring to our bodies.
00:06:05.13\00:06:06.73
He's referring
to this carnal body,
00:06:06.76\00:06:08.66
this earthly has this,
this carnal, earthly beaten,
00:06:08.70\00:06:11.90
and battered body that we have
00:06:11.93\00:06:13.47
as we're
traveling through this life
00:06:13.50\00:06:15.87
on the road to our next life.
00:06:15.90\00:06:17.47
He says,
00:06:17.51\00:06:18.84
"This tent is destroyed.
We have the building for God,
00:06:18.87\00:06:22.01
a house not made with
hands, eternal in the heavens."
00:06:22.04\00:06:25.28
So Paul often
refers to our bodies
00:06:25.31\00:06:27.28
as the temple
of the Holy Spirit.
00:06:27.32\00:06:28.85
Another word for
temple would be tabernacle,
00:06:28.88\00:06:31.09
and so that our
bodies is the tabernacle
00:06:31.12\00:06:33.02
or the temple
of the Holy Spirit.
00:06:33.05\00:06:34.56
And he's simply opening up
in this first verse saying,
00:06:34.59\00:06:36.52
you know what,
we've grown in this body,
00:06:36.56\00:06:38.66
we desire what God
has prepared for us
00:06:38.69\00:06:41.03
in the heavens
and you know what?
00:06:41.06\00:06:42.53
One day He's going
to change this tent,
00:06:42.56\00:06:45.13
this vile tent into
an earthly heavenly tent.
00:06:45.17\00:06:48.90
And then verse 2 goes on to say,
00:06:48.94\00:06:50.27
"For in this we groan,
00:06:50.31\00:06:52.54
earnestly desiring to be clothed
00:06:52.57\00:06:54.58
with our habitation
which is from heaven,
00:06:54.61\00:06:57.15
if indeed, having been clothed,
00:06:57.18\00:06:58.65
we shall not be found naked."
00:06:58.68\00:07:00.82
Again, He's just
reaffirming the fact
00:07:00.85\00:07:02.28
that we desire to be away
00:07:02.32\00:07:04.35
and out of this
earthly battered body,

and to have that
new heavenly body

that God is
going to create for us.

Notice number four,

"For we who are
in this tent groan,

because we want to be unclothed,

So this is verse
4 that we just read.

And I think this is
the key to understanding,

probably one of the
most misunderstood text

which is actually verse 8.

Okay, let's read through
and when we get to verse 8,

you're going to
see what that is.
00:07:33.08\00:07:34.42
Verse 5, let's continue on.
00:07:34.45\00:07:35.78
It says, "Now He
who has prepared us
00:07:35.82\00:07:37.72
for this very thing is God,
00:07:37.75\00:07:39.75
who also has given us
the spirit as a guarantee.
00:07:39.79\00:07:44.29
So we are always confident,
00:07:44.33\00:07:46.46
knowing that while we
are at home in the body
00:07:46.49\00:07:49.76
we are absent from the Lord,
00:07:49.80\00:07:51.93
for we walk by
faith, not by sight."
00:07:51.97\00:07:53.84
He's saying, while we
have this carnal body,
00:07:53.87\00:07:55.74
we can't be in God's presence.
00:07:55.77\00:07:57.11
So we're going to
need an upgraded body.

When do we get that?

Well, verse 8, some
people twist that, it says,

"We are confident,
yes, well pleased rather"
00:08:02.38\00:08:05.41
King James Version says,
00:08:05.45\00:08:06.78
"will rather, to be
absent from the body
00:08:06.82\00:08:09.35
and to be
present with the Lord."
00:08:09.38\00:08:10.75
And I want to insert that
00:08:10.79\00:08:12.12
and to be present with the Lord,
00:08:12.15\00:08:13.49
because many
people read verse 8,
00:08:13.52\00:08:14.86
and they automatically assume
00:08:14.89\00:08:16.36
that God is saying that
immediately when we die,
00:08:16.39\00:08:18.89
at the point of death,
00:08:18.93\00:08:20.26
as soon as we
take that last breath,
00:08:20.30\00:08:21.73
some ghostly
apparition of some kind
00:08:21.76\00:08:25.13
that's in our body
is somehow liberated
00:08:25.17\00:08:27.54
or separated from the body
00:08:27.57\00:08:28.90
and immediately finds itself
in the presence of the Lord.
00:08:28.94\00:08:31.57
And we know that the
Bible doesn't teach that,
00:08:31.61\00:08:33.11
but I believe verse 4
is the key to understanding
00:08:33.14\00:08:36.08
what Paul is
saying here in verse 8.
00:08:36.11\00:08:37.85
Let's look back at verse 4.
00:08:37.88\00:08:39.21
He says, "For we who
are in this tent groan,
00:08:39.25\00:08:40.98
being burdened, not
because we want to be unclothed,
00:08:41.02\00:08:44.29
but further clothed,"
00:08:44.32\00:08:45.65
and here's the last part notice,
00:08:45.69\00:08:47.02
"that mortality might
be swallowed up of life."

The question is,

when did Paul believe that

this mortality might
be swallowed up of life?

Let's go to 1
Corinthians Chapter 15.

And this is where in
which we ask the question,

what is the fate of the dead?

What do we have
to look forward to?

with the time we have left.

What did Paul
believe in reference to

when that mortality
is swaddled up of life?

In other words, when this
body, this earthly body is shed,

we get our new bodies

and we are now
present with the Lord.

When does that
happen? At the point of death?

Notice what Paul
says in 1 Corinthians 15,

beginning with verse 51.
00:09:25.06\00:09:26.66
He says, "Behold,
I tell you a mystery:
00:09:26.70\00:09:28.20
We shall not all sleep,
but we shall all be" what?
00:09:28.23\00:09:31.27
"Changed." We shall.
00:09:31.30\00:09:32.63
Of course, he's
meant when he says,
00:09:32.67\00:09:34.00
we shall not all sleep,
is referring to death there.
00:09:34.04\00:09:35.80
We shall not all die,
00:09:35.84\00:09:37.51
because are there going
to be people alive and well
00:09:37.54\00:09:39.41
when Jesus comes back?
00:09:39.44\00:09:40.78
That's right.
00:09:40.81\00:09:42.14
But he says,

whether regardless of whether
you're asleep in the grave,

or you are alive at
Jesus' Second Coming,

we shall all be changed. When?

trumpet will sound

and the dead will be
raised incorruptible."

Is there hope for
those who have died in Jesus?

It says, the dead will
be raised incorruptible

and we shall be
changed for this corruptible

must put on incorruption.

And here it is, and this
mortal must put on immortality.

So when this corruption
is put on incorruption,

so when this corruptible

There is hope, my
friends beyond the grave.

If you know Jesus Christ,

this promise is for
those who know Jesus.

what about if
you don't know Jesus?

John 5:28-29.

Jesus makes it very clear.

He says, "Do not marvel at this,

for the hour is coming,"

notice hasn't
yet but it is coming,
00:10:53.82\00:10:55.58
"and which all
who are in the graves

will hear His voice."

And he described
these two groups.

He says, "And
they will come forth

those who have done good
to the resurrection of life."

That's at the
Second Coming of Jesus,

that said that when
the trumpet of God sounds,

what we just read
in 1 Corinthians 15,

but then there's a second group
and those who have done evil

to the
resurrection of condemnation.

So there will be
two resurrections,

but my friends, I'm here
to give you hope today, okay.

The reason why Jesus
hasn't come back yet,

for several reasons,

but one of the reasons
is He's giving us time.

He's merciful for us,
He wants us to be ready,

He wants you to be ready.

And right now you have hope,

whether you die
now before Jesus comes

soon in the near future

or if you're there
alive to see Jesus,

there is hope beyond
this life in the next.

I want to look at 1
Thessalonians Chapter 4.

The reason I want to go
here is because the people of,

the people at the
church of Thessalonica
00:11:48.57\00:11:50.74
actually posed
this question to Paul,
00:11:50.77\00:11:52.51
they were worried
00:11:52.54\00:11:53.88
because Paul had talked a lot.
00:11:53.91\00:11:55.24
If you go read the books
of 1 and 2 Thessalonians.
00:11:55.28\00:11:57.25
I mean, the common theme
that keeps popping back up
00:11:57.28\00:11:59.51
is Paul's talking
about the Second Coming,
00:11:59.55\00:12:01.38
the Second
Coming, the Second Coming.
00:12:01.42\00:12:03.02
When Jesus is going to come back
00:12:03.05\00:12:04.39
and get His people.
00:12:04.42\00:12:05.75
But here's the thing,
they pose the question to Paul,
00:12:05.79\00:12:07.52
they're saying,
00:12:07.56\00:12:08.89
"Hey, what about the
loved ones that have died
00:12:08.92\00:12:10.93
that believed in Jesus?
00:12:10.96\00:12:12.29
But you know, they've expired,
00:12:12.33\00:12:13.66
they're in the
grave, they're buried.
00:12:13.70\00:12:15.03
What about those people?"
00:12:15.06\00:12:16.40
And Paul says, "You
know what? Let me clarify."
00:12:16.43\00:12:18.73
Notice, we're going
to start in verse 13
00:12:18.77\00:12:20.30
at 1 Thessalonians 4.
00:12:20.34\00:12:21.94
It says, "But I do not want
you to be ignorant, brethren,
