Amen and amen. 00:02:24.04\00:02:25.37 All right, this is lesson 12, "Sabbath: 00:02:25.41\00:02:28.78 Experiencing and Living the Character of God." 00:02:28.81\00:02:32.21 So let's look at our memory text, 00:02:32.25\00:02:34.48 it's Mark 2:27 and 28. 00:02:34.52\00:02:37.39 And this is Jesus speaking. 00:02:37.42\00:02:40.06 And he said, "The Sabbath was made for man, 00:02:40.09\00:02:45.13 and not man for the Sabbath. 00:02:45.16\00:02:47.43 Therefore the Son of Man 00:02:47.46\00:02:49.40 is also the Lord of the Sabbath." 00:02:49.43\00:02:52.90 When God instituted the Sabbath, 00:02:52.93\00:02:55.40 He intended that it would be a blessing to mankind, 00:02:55.44\00:03:01.21 not a burden, but by the time of Jesus, 00:03:01.24\00:03:04.65 the Jewish religious leaders had the observance of Sabbath 00:03:04.68\00:03:10.39 had become so weighed down 00:03:10.42\00:03:13.56 with mandated legalistic requirements, 00:03:13.59\00:03:17.59 that it's sucked the joy right out of the Sabbath. 00:03:17.63\00:03:22.36 Sabbath was created to be a benefit to mankind. 00:03:22.40\00:03:27.37 It was a time to be astonished at our Father's love, 00:03:27.40\00:03:31.67 a time for rediscovering for learning priorities, 00:03:31.71\00:03:36.14 finding balance, a time for community. 00:03:36.18\00:03:40.22 And the benefit was to us 00:03:40.25\00:03:43.18 that we had a day off from our labors 00:03:43.22\00:03:46.79 and we had to focus on God's blessing. 00:03:46.82\00:03:50.43 The Sabbath School quarterly started off 00:03:50.46\00:03:53.16 with an interesting story about two ladies Jody and Gail. 00:03:53.19\00:03:57.00 And Jody was the only one in her graduate program, 00:03:57.03\00:04:02.60 who was a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:04:02.64\00:04:04.07 Well, everybody knew 00:04:04.11\00:04:05.44 she operated a little differently. 00:04:05.47\00:04:07.34 Well, her friend Gail, 00:04:07.38\00:04:09.08 her husband was going out of town for six weeks. 00:04:09.11\00:04:11.65 So she calls Jody and says, 00:04:11.68\00:04:13.35 "Hey, I know you don't do anything 00:04:13.38\00:04:14.78 on Friday nights anyway. 00:04:14.82\00:04:16.15 So why don't you come spend, 00:04:16.18\00:04:17.52 hang out with me 00:04:17.55\00:04:18.89 for the next six Friday nights?" 00:04:18.92\00:04:20.52 Well, they do. 00:04:20.56\00:04:21.89 And they listen to Christian music 00:04:21.92\00:04:23.43 and they talk about the Lord and they eat together. 00:04:23.46\00:04:27.00 Well, what happened after four Sabbaths had passed, 00:04:27.03\00:04:30.90 Gail, non-Adventist was downtown shopping. 00:04:30.93\00:04:35.27 And it was on a Friday, 00:04:35.30\00:04:36.91 and all of a sudden she looks at her 00:04:36.94\00:04:38.64 watch and thinks, 00:04:38.67\00:04:40.08 "Wonderful. 00:04:40.11\00:04:41.44 The Sabbath is about to begin." 00:04:41.48\00:04:45.01 And she's getting ready to rush home 00:04:45.05\00:04:46.68 and she realizes how much she had grown 00:04:46.72\00:04:50.52 in her relationship with the Lord 00:04:50.55\00:04:52.95 as she had celebrated God's Sabbath. 00:04:52.99\00:04:55.69 So let's look at Sunday, time to be astonished. 00:04:55.72\00:05:01.56 The first two chapters of Genesis 00:05:01.60\00:05:03.83 gives us two different creation accounts 00:05:03.87\00:05:07.84 on the same event, 00:05:07.87\00:05:09.37 but two different accounts of creation. 00:05:09.40\00:05:11.64 Because there's no way you could cover 00:05:11.67\00:05:13.38 creation one account. 00:05:13.41\00:05:14.74 Let me read what 00:05:14.78\00:05:16.11 the Sabbath School quarterly says. 00:05:16.14\00:05:18.05 Genesis 1 recounts the creation week 00:05:18.08\00:05:21.15 and the growing wonder of the earth 00:05:21.18\00:05:22.72 as it is given form and then life, 00:05:22.75\00:05:25.49 culminating in the creation of man 00:05:25.52\00:05:27.46 and woman on the sixth day. 00:05:27.49\00:05:29.39 So first, we learn 00:05:29.42\00:05:31.69 of the powerful artistic creator, 00:05:31.73\00:05:35.06 who has an eye for perfect beauty. 00:05:35.10\00:05:38.23 But then Genesis 2 it says, looks at the same account, 00:05:38.27\00:05:41.40 but from a different perspective, 00:05:41.44\00:05:43.37 with a special focus on the sixth day. 00:05:43.41\00:05:47.24 Adam is at the center of the picture. 00:05:47.28\00:05:48.74 Now, everything is described as being there for him 00:05:48.78\00:05:53.21 and the woman, the garden, 00:05:53.25\00:05:54.98 the rivers, the animals, and of course, woman. 00:05:55.02\00:05:58.95 So this second account is showing us 00:05:58.99\00:06:03.76 that we're going to meet the God of relationships, 00:06:03.79\00:06:07.20 and that He wants humanity 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.13 to love and care for each other, 00:06:09.16\00:06:11.77 and for the rest of creation. 00:06:11.80\00:06:13.87 But I want to add this point. 00:06:13.90\00:06:16.10 There is a dramatic punctuation 00:06:16.14\00:06:19.47 between the first account and the second account. 00:06:19.51\00:06:22.24 Let's look at it. 00:06:22.28\00:06:23.61 Genesis 2:1-3, 00:06:23.65\00:06:26.28 we've just finished the first account creation. 00:06:26.31\00:06:29.35 And Genesis 2 begins this way. 00:06:29.38\00:06:31.59 "Thus the heavens and the earth and all the host of them 00:06:31.62\00:06:34.32 were finished. 00:06:34.36\00:06:36.19 And on the seventh day, 00:06:36.22\00:06:37.56 God ended His work which He had done, 00:06:37.59\00:06:40.06 He rested on the seventh day from all of His work 00:06:40.10\00:06:42.76 which He had done, 00:06:42.80\00:06:44.13 then God blessed the seventh day 00:06:44.17\00:06:47.07 and sanctified it, 00:06:47.10\00:06:48.94 because in it, He rested from all His work 00:06:48.97\00:06:51.17 which God had created and made." 00:06:51.21\00:06:53.24 Now Hebrew for rested is Shabbat, 00:06:53.27\00:06:56.61 and it means basically to cease and desist from work. 00:06:56.64\00:07:00.82 And, you know, God didn't rest because He was exhausted. 00:07:00.85\00:07:05.22 Isaiah 40:28 says, 00:07:05.25\00:07:07.39 "The Lord, the creators of the end of the earth, 00:07:07.42\00:07:10.26 neither faints nor grow weary." 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.39 So why did God rest? 00:07:12.43\00:07:14.86 He ceased from the work of creation, 00:07:14.90\00:07:18.13 because the work was completed. 00:07:18.17\00:07:22.14 You know, that's how I feel on the Sabbath 00:07:22.17\00:07:23.91 when I keep the Sabbath, I am resting. 00:07:23.94\00:07:27.71 To me, Sabbath is never a work. 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.91 Sabbath is a rest 00:07:29.94\00:07:31.28 because I remember 00:07:31.31\00:07:32.81 that God's work of salvation is completed, 00:07:32.85\00:07:36.38 that in Christ Jesus, 00:07:36.42\00:07:38.39 He is going to not only justify me 00:07:38.42\00:07:42.89 by grace through faith, 00:07:42.92\00:07:44.33 but He's working in me 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.56 to sanctify me by grace through faith. 00:07:46.59\00:07:49.26 But Jesus said, 00:07:49.30\00:07:50.63 "My father has been working until now, 00:07:50.67\00:07:52.70 and I have been working." 00:07:52.73\00:07:54.50 So when we look at this account of creation, 00:07:54.54\00:07:57.81 it says in Chapter 1, 00:07:57.84\00:07:59.77 and the evening and the morning were the first day, 00:07:59.81\00:08:02.34 and the evening and the morning were the second day, 00:08:02.38\00:08:05.18 and it goes all the way through, 00:08:05.21\00:08:07.45 till on the sixth day, which was Friday, 00:08:07.48\00:08:10.39 He creates Adam and Eve, 00:08:10.42\00:08:12.25 the evening and the morning were the sixth day. 00:08:12.29\00:08:15.89 So on that evening, 00:08:15.92\00:08:18.36 Saturday evening is when the Sabbath began, 00:08:18.39\00:08:22.50 and God rested 00:08:22.53\00:08:26.03 to basically establish a pattern 00:08:26.07\00:08:29.84 for man's work cycle when you think about it. 00:08:29.87\00:08:32.91 We have a yearly cycle, that is a solar cycle, right? 00:08:32.94\00:08:38.78 We have a monthly cycle, that is a lunar cycle. 00:08:38.81\00:08:42.85 But the only reason 00:08:42.88\00:08:45.52 that we have a seven-day work cycle 00:08:45.55\00:08:48.42 is because this is God's perfect pattern. 00:08:48.46\00:08:52.49 We work six, six on, the seventh day is off. 00:08:52.53\00:08:56.16 So God blessed the seventh day. 00:08:56.20\00:08:59.07 And you know, this is the only unit of time 00:08:59.10\00:09:01.20 in the creation account that God blesses. 00:09:01.24\00:09:04.11 And then He sanctified that day. 00:09:04.14\00:09:06.17 That means He set it aside. 00:09:06.21\00:09:08.28 And He made it holy, 00:09:08.31\00:09:11.15 just meaning that He's set aside 00:09:11.18\00:09:12.61 for His purposes. 00:09:12.65\00:09:14.45 So I want to add, oh, my God can sanctify a day. 00:09:14.48\00:09:19.05 And there's no other day. 00:09:19.09\00:09:21.12 Sunday is never sanctified in the Bible. 00:09:21.16\00:09:24.79 Here's the bottom line. 00:09:24.83\00:09:26.46 God is a relational being. 00:09:26.49\00:09:28.76 He longs for you to open your heart 00:09:28.80\00:09:32.37 and to let Him pour His love into your heart. 00:09:32.40\00:09:35.24 He longs to be part of your life experiences. 00:09:35.27\00:09:39.37 God, the ideal would be that we are like Enoch 00:09:39.41\00:09:44.85 that we walk with God in uninterrupted fellowship. 00:09:44.88\00:09:48.08 But you know what? 00:09:48.12\00:09:49.45 God knows the end from the beginning. 00:09:49.48\00:09:51.49 And He knew that man would get busy 00:09:51.52\00:09:54.26 and in his busyness interrupt that fellowship. 00:09:54.29\00:09:58.09 So God set aside the seventh day 00:09:58.13\00:10:01.40 that we can come to Him, 00:10:01.43\00:10:03.67 forget about all of our troubles, 00:10:03.70\00:10:05.97 build our trust in Him, 00:10:06.00\00:10:07.97 our faith in Him as our Creator, 00:10:08.00\00:10:11.47 and the one who recreates us 00:10:11.51\00:10:13.14 in the image of Jesus as our Redeemer, 00:10:13.17\00:10:15.98 and our Deliverer and the one who sanctifies us. 00:10:16.01\00:10:19.61 And the intimacy of our relationship 00:10:19.65\00:10:22.45 is magnified when we spend time 00:10:22.48\00:10:24.55 in God's presence. 00:10:24.59\00:10:25.99 I love this day. 00:10:26.02\00:10:27.49 God is the one who teaches us how to follow His path of life. 00:10:27.52\00:10:32.89 But now, just think about this. 00:10:32.93\00:10:35.60 Sabbath is a time of uninterrupted fellowship. 00:10:35.63\00:10:39.07 When we can look up from our work, 00:10:39.10\00:10:42.10 we can look at the skies and marvel at the stars 00:10:42.14\00:10:46.07 and how God created everything with such beauty. 00:10:46.11\00:10:49.14 We can smell the flowers, 00:10:49.18\00:10:51.55 walk through the forest or the trees. 00:10:51.58\00:10:54.38 And then we also learn how to accept responsibility 00:10:54.42\00:10:59.95 for the interdependence of relationship 00:10:59.99\00:11:02.42 with family and church. 00:11:02.46\00:11:04.33 But now let's just think about Adam and Eve for a moment. 00:11:04.36\00:11:08.70 Here they're created on the sixth day, 00:11:08.73\00:11:11.13 and they are getting ready to have their first full day 00:11:11.17\00:11:15.74 from Friday evening, till Saturday evening, 00:11:15.77\00:11:19.91 that seventh-day, 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.38 their first full day with their Creator, 00:11:21.41\00:11:23.65 their first full day with their spouse, 00:11:23.68\00:11:25.78 can you imagine. 00:11:25.81\00:11:27.75 It was a day that touched all of their senses. 00:11:27.78\00:11:33.02 Their eyes marveled 00:11:33.05\00:11:35.32 at all the beautiful colors of the Lord. 00:11:35.36\00:11:38.59 They're looking at the beautiful colors 00:11:38.63\00:11:40.40 of the different birds, 00:11:40.43\00:11:41.93 the beautiful colors of the flowers. 00:11:41.96\00:11:45.50 And you know, for me, because I like, 00:11:45.53\00:11:47.60 I like to dabble in painting. 00:11:47.64\00:11:50.34 When I look out on the green, if I'm looking at the trees, 00:11:50.37\00:11:55.31 I see maybe 50 different shades of green in the trees. 00:11:55.34\00:11:58.65 I love it. 00:11:58.68\00:12:00.02 So here, their eyes are marveling 00:12:00.05\00:12:01.98 at the unique shapes and sizes of everything. 00:12:02.02\00:12:05.65 They see the huge elephant, 00:12:05.69\00:12:07.82 and they see the duck billed platypus. 00:12:07.86\00:12:10.33 And they knew God had a sense of humor 00:12:10.36\00:12:12.29 if He created the platypus, 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.36 and the little tiny hummingbirds, 00:12:14.40\00:12:16.83 and their noses are crinkling with the light 00:12:16.87\00:12:19.93 as they smell the aroma of the flowers and the fruits. 00:12:19.97\00:12:24.44 And when you think about it, 00:12:24.47\00:12:26.04 even smelling the lion's breath. 00:12:26.07\00:12:28.94 I'm sure the lion's breath was like puppy's breath 00:12:28.98\00:12:31.45 at that time. 00:12:31.48\00:12:33.15 The lush grass, 00:12:33.18\00:12:34.82 just think about how their senses, 00:12:34.85\00:12:36.85 the sense of touch as they laid in the lush grass 00:12:36.89\00:12:41.12 and it was like, ooh, it feels like velvet. 00:12:41.16\00:12:44.46 And then they feel the coolness of the cascading waterfalls on, 00:12:44.49\00:12:49.16 the heat of the sun 00:12:49.20\00:12:50.73 as they're warming up from that. 00:12:50.77\00:12:52.67 And then when you think about it, 00:12:52.70\00:12:54.60 they heard the bleeding of the sheep, 00:12:54.64\00:12:57.97 they hear the braying of the donkeys, 00:12:58.01\00:13:00.31 they hear the beautiful sounds 00:13:00.34\00:13:02.04 of all the birds. 00:13:02.08\00:13:03.41 And it was just a symphony of sounds. 00:13:03.45\00:13:06.88 How marvelous it must have been. 00:13:06.92\00:13:09.38 Then their sense of taste, mangoes, grapes, 00:13:09.42\00:13:12.59 all the goodies that God had for them. 00:13:12.62\00:13:15.26 They were enraptured by the Creator, 00:13:15.29\00:13:19.39 and the creation, their first full day. 00:13:19.43\00:13:23.40 Let me just share with you very briefly my first day. 00:13:23.43\00:13:27.84 When God called me to full time ministry, he said, 00:13:27.87\00:13:31.37 "Forget what you think, you know, come sit at my feet, 00:13:31.41\00:13:33.51 and I will teach you." 00:13:33.54\00:13:35.28 He started me on a study of the sanctuary. 00:13:35.31\00:13:38.95 And I found out the Ten Commandments 00:13:38.98\00:13:40.98 were inside the ark, 00:13:41.02\00:13:42.35 and that book of the law was on the outside. 00:13:42.38\00:13:45.49 I realized, wow. 00:13:45.52\00:13:48.79 Sabbath is the only one that I am ignoring. 00:13:48.82\00:13:52.46 And you know, the first Sabbath, 00:13:52.49\00:13:54.70 I'll never forget, as the Sabbath rolled in, 00:13:54.73\00:13:57.83 it was like, all of my stress sweat out 00:13:57.87\00:14:02.40 because all of my life 00:14:02.44\00:14:04.27 I had been trying to speak good enough for God 00:14:04.31\00:14:07.94 and save myself. 00:14:07.98\00:14:09.31 And finally I realized, 00:14:09.34\00:14:11.18 Exodus 31:13 00:14:11.21\00:14:13.82 God said the Sabbath is a sign 00:14:13.85\00:14:15.98 that I'm the one who sanctifies you. 00:14:16.02\00:14:18.09 Amen. Well, thank you, Shelley. 00:14:18.12\00:14:20.66 Well, what an astonishing picture 00:14:20.69\00:14:22.42 that you drew. 00:14:22.46\00:14:23.96 I was there on the carpet, 00:14:23.99\00:14:26.19 smelling the lion's baby breath. 00:14:26.23\00:14:29.80 It was an amazing picture. 00:14:29.83\00:14:31.23 We don't think about it often that way. 00:14:31.27\00:14:33.03 But what a picture it must have been 00:14:33.07\00:14:34.47 that perfect day of creation. 00:14:34.50\00:14:36.24 They could lay on the grass and there were no ants 00:14:36.27\00:14:38.21 crawling on them to bite them. 00:14:38.24\00:14:40.21 What a setting. 00:14:40.24\00:14:41.58 You know, if we're faithful, we'll get that chance. 00:14:41.61\00:14:43.45 Again, I'm looking forward to that. 00:14:43.48\00:14:45.31 What a garden it was. 00:14:45.35\00:14:46.68 But now we go to Monday, "Time for Rediscovery." 00:14:46.72\00:14:51.42 Now as Shelley laid the foundation for the Sabbath 00:14:51.45\00:14:53.59 as it was in the beginning, the first and second stage. 00:14:53.62\00:14:57.93 We now look at the Sabbath in a different light. 00:14:57.96\00:15:00.96 You know, sin really took its course in the earth. 00:15:01.00\00:15:03.43 And as the progression of the generations continued, 00:15:03.47\00:15:07.04 finally, the Lord called a man by the name of Abraham, 00:15:07.07\00:15:11.34 and Genesis 26:5 says, Abraham, 00:15:11.37\00:15:14.84 because Abraham kept my commandments, 00:15:14.88\00:15:16.98 my statutes and my laws. 00:15:17.01\00:15:19.01 Abraham was not an Israelite, 00:15:19.05\00:15:20.98 they were not in existence then, 00:15:21.02\00:15:22.35 there was no such thing as a Jew. 00:15:22.38\00:15:24.59 He was from Chaldea or Chaldea, whichever way you say it, 00:15:24.62\00:15:27.69 a province in Babylon, 00:15:27.72\00:15:29.76 but he saw God and God made him faithful. 00:15:29.79\00:15:32.79 From him came generations, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, 00:15:32.83\00:15:35.80 from Jacob came 12 sons, the children of Israel, 00:15:35.83\00:15:39.07 after Jacob overcame in his night of wrestling 00:15:39.10\00:15:41.74 with the Lord. 00:15:41.77\00:15:43.10 And then the nations began to grow, 00:15:43.14\00:15:45.94 they fell into bondage because of disobedience. 00:15:45.97\00:15:49.04 And a famine arose, 00:15:49.08\00:15:50.45 and they ended up Joseph went to Egypt. 00:15:50.48\00:15:53.05 And when the famine arose, 00:15:53.08\00:15:54.42 the family went to Egypt for provision, 00:15:54.45\00:15:56.38 and they were there a total of 400 years, 00:15:56.42\00:15:59.59 the generations 430 if you count 00:15:59.62\00:16:02.02 when Joseph was there, 00:16:02.06\00:16:04.19 but can now imagine 400 years, generation after generation, 00:16:04.23\00:16:08.43 being born and dying, being born and dying, 00:16:08.46\00:16:11.43 and something got lost in the slavery, 00:16:11.47\00:16:13.30 in the bondage of Egypt. 00:16:13.34\00:16:15.17 They went from the free people to the people in bondage 00:16:15.20\00:16:17.27 when a Pharaoh rose that did not know Joseph. 00:16:17.31\00:16:21.61 The bondage time came, and somewhere in the mix, 00:16:21.64\00:16:24.68 the Sabbath got lost. 00:16:24.71\00:16:26.68 Because now as we go to Exodus 16, 00:16:26.72\00:16:29.25 you'll find on the post Exodus, 00:16:29.28\00:16:32.52 one of the very first test 00:16:32.55\00:16:33.92 that God brings to the Israelites 00:16:33.96\00:16:35.62 is on the Sabbath. 00:16:35.66\00:16:37.13 Let's dive into Exodus 16. 00:16:37.16\00:16:39.89 And by the way, for those of you that think 00:16:39.93\00:16:41.33 the Sabbath did not exist until Sinai, 00:16:41.36\00:16:43.77 this is an indelible example, 00:16:43.80\00:16:45.27 a story of history 00:16:45.30\00:16:46.74 that shows that before was written 00:16:46.77\00:16:48.20 on tables of stone, 00:16:48.24\00:16:49.67 the Lord brought the test back. 00:16:49.70\00:16:52.24 Exodus 16:14, and the Lord gave them he said, 00:16:52.27\00:16:55.91 I'm going to provide you food, and look at what he says. 00:16:55.94\00:16:59.51 "And they saw something every morning 00:16:59.55\00:17:00.88 on the desert floor called manna," 00:17:00.92\00:17:02.25 but it says, 00:17:02.28\00:17:03.62 "And when the layer of dew lifted, there, 00:17:03.65\00:17:04.99 on the surface of the wilderness, 00:17:05.02\00:17:06.65 was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground. 00:17:06.69\00:17:10.59 So when the children of Israel saw it, 00:17:10.63\00:17:12.29 they said to one another, 'What is it?'" 00:17:12.33\00:17:14.33 And by the way, manna means exactly that, 00:17:14.36\00:17:16.16 what is it? 00:17:16.20\00:17:17.53 Like what do you having, nut n honey, exactly. 00:17:17.57\00:17:20.20 What are you having? Nut n honey. 00:17:20.24\00:17:21.57 There was a cereal called nut n honey. 00:17:21.60\00:17:24.14 You get to say nut n honey. 00:17:24.17\00:17:25.51 She said exactly. What are you having? 00:17:25.54\00:17:27.18 Nut n honey. Exactly. 00:17:27.21\00:17:28.58 Well, they had manna, what is it? 00:17:28.61\00:17:30.51 "For they did not know what it was. 00:17:30.55\00:17:32.98 And Moses said to them, 00:17:33.01\00:17:34.35 'This is the bread 00:17:34.38\00:17:35.72 which the Lord has given you to eat. 00:17:35.75\00:17:37.09 This is the thing which the Lord has commanded: 00:17:37.12\00:17:39.22 'Every man gather it according to each one's need, 00:17:39.25\00:17:41.92 one omer for each person, 00:17:41.96\00:17:43.36 according to the number of persons, 00:17:43.39\00:17:45.06 let every man take for those who are in his tent.' 00:17:45.09\00:17:48.33 Then the children of Israel did so and gathered, 00:17:48.36\00:17:50.33 some more, some less. 00:17:50.37\00:17:51.73 So when they measured it by omers, 00:17:51.77\00:17:54.87 he who gathered much had nothing left over, 00:17:54.90\00:17:56.77 and he who gathered little had no lack. 00:17:56.81\00:17:59.17 Every man had gathered according to each one's need. 00:17:59.21\00:18:01.88 And Moses said, 00:18:01.91\00:18:04.38 'Let no one leave any of it till morning.' 00:18:04.41\00:18:06.75 Not withstanding they did not heed Moses. 00:18:06.78\00:18:10.45 But some of them," the guys had snacked at night, 00:18:10.49\00:18:14.59 "some of them left part of it until morning, 00:18:14.62\00:18:16.49 and it bred worms and stink. 00:18:16.52\00:18:18.66 And Moses was angry with them. 00:18:18.69\00:18:20.23 So they gathered it every morning, 00:18:20.26\00:18:22.56 every man according to his need. 00:18:22.60\00:18:24.30 And when the sun became hot, it melted. 00:18:24.33\00:18:26.80 And so it was, on the sixth day, 00:18:26.84\00:18:28.57 they gathered twice as much bread, 00:18:28.60\00:18:29.97 two omers for each one. 00:18:30.01\00:18:31.54 And all the rulers of the congregation 00:18:31.57\00:18:33.34 came and told Moses. 00:18:33.38\00:18:35.88 Then he said to them, 00:18:35.91\00:18:37.25 'This is what the Lord has said: 00:18:37.28\00:18:39.38 'Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. 00:18:39.41\00:18:44.49 Bake what you will bake today, boil what you will boil, 00:18:44.52\00:18:47.99 and lay up for yourselves all that remains, 00:18:48.02\00:18:51.16 to be kept until morning.' 00:18:51.19\00:18:52.83 God blesses the work of the sixth day. 00:18:52.86\00:18:55.90 So they laid it up into the morning, 00:18:55.93\00:18:57.27 as Moses commanded, and it did not stink, 00:18:57.30\00:18:59.67 nor were there any worms in it. 00:18:59.70\00:19:01.54 Then Moses said, 'Eat that today, 00:19:01.57\00:19:03.41 for today is a Sabbath to the Lord, 00:19:03.44\00:19:05.17 today you will find none in the field. 00:19:05.21\00:19:08.18 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, 00:19:08.21\00:19:10.48 the Sabbath, there will be none.'" 00:19:10.51\00:19:12.21 Now it happened 00:19:12.25\00:19:13.58 that some of the people went out 00:19:13.62\00:19:14.95 on the seventh day to gather, 00:19:14.98\00:19:16.38 but they found none. 00:19:16.42\00:19:17.95 And the Lord said to Moses, listen to this, 00:19:17.99\00:19:20.42 "How long do you refuse 00:19:20.46\00:19:22.59 to keep My commandments and My laws? 00:19:22.62\00:19:25.16 See! 00:19:25.19\00:19:26.53 For the Lord has given you the Sabbath, 00:19:26.56\00:19:28.50 therefore He gives you 00:19:28.53\00:19:30.07 on the sixth day bread for two days. 00:19:30.10\00:19:34.24 Let every man remain in his place, 00:19:34.27\00:19:36.27 let no man go out of his place on the seventh day." 00:19:36.30\00:19:38.87 And then verse 30, 00:19:38.91\00:19:40.24 "So the people rested on the seventh day." 00:19:40.28\00:19:43.28 The Bible calls the seventh day the Sabbath before Sinai. 00:19:43.31\00:19:47.05 So you see, when He said how long, 00:19:47.08\00:19:49.28 that meant, this wasn't the first test. 00:19:49.32\00:19:51.55 They had lost track of the Sabbath in Egypt. 00:19:51.59\00:19:53.79 And one of the things, 00:19:53.82\00:19:55.16 one of the things that got Pharaoh angry, 00:19:55.19\00:19:56.83 I think, is Exodus 5:5 00:19:56.86\00:19:58.66 because Aaron and Moses restored a day of labor, 00:19:58.69\00:20:02.16 a day of rest for them while they were in Egypt. 00:20:02.20\00:20:05.33 And it got Pharaoh angry. 00:20:05.37\00:20:07.00 And that's when he commanded 00:20:07.04\00:20:08.60 that they make brick without straw. 00:20:08.64\00:20:10.94 But there are six points 00:20:10.97\00:20:12.31 I want to bring out very quickly, 00:20:12.34\00:20:13.81 seven points. 00:20:13.84\00:20:15.18 And if I'm as good as Jill, 00:20:15.21\00:20:16.54 I could get it done in four minutes. 00:20:16.58\00:20:18.58 The first purpose of the Sabbath, 00:20:18.61\00:20:21.65 Matthew 6:11, 00:20:21.68\00:20:23.18 the daily provision to show 00:20:23.22\00:20:25.45 was to show God's care for their daily needs. 00:20:25.49\00:20:28.66 That's why Matthew years later said in Matthew 6:11, 00:20:28.69\00:20:32.49 "Give us this day, our daily bread." 00:20:32.53\00:20:35.56 All the way back from the Exodus. 00:20:35.60\00:20:38.30 The second reason for the Sabbath test 00:20:38.33\00:20:41.37 was to show that God is our provider. 00:20:41.40\00:20:44.41 He gave them food every day. 00:20:44.44\00:20:45.77 And Paul many centuries later said, 00:20:45.81\00:20:48.44 "And my God shall supply all your need 00:20:48.48\00:20:50.81 according to His riches and glory." 00:20:50.85\00:20:52.61 Philippians 4:19, 00:20:52.65\00:20:54.02 going all the way back 00:20:54.05\00:20:55.88 to the account in the wilderness. 00:20:55.92\00:20:58.55 The third one was to remind the manna 00:20:58.59\00:21:01.56 that they receive was a reminder 00:21:01.59\00:21:03.46 of the coming Messiah. 00:21:03.49\00:21:04.83 Oh, that's good. 00:21:04.86\00:21:06.19 John 6:32, 00:21:06.23\00:21:07.60 "Then Jesus said to them, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, 00:21:07.63\00:21:11.03 Moses did not give you the bread from heaven. 00:21:11.07\00:21:14.27 But my father gives you the true bread from heaven." 00:21:14.30\00:21:17.97 And Jesus was talking about Himself, 00:21:18.01\00:21:20.31 He is the bread of life. 00:21:20.34\00:21:22.18 So that was a reminder 00:21:22.21\00:21:23.85 all the way back to the post Exodus. 00:21:23.88\00:21:26.98 The fourth reason or the fourth lesson, 00:21:27.02\00:21:29.15 the early morning provision 00:21:29.18\00:21:30.79 revealed the mercy and the faithfulness of God. 00:21:30.82\00:21:34.72 Lamentation 3:21-24, 00:21:34.76\00:21:37.03 "This I recall to mind, therefore I have hope. 00:21:37.06\00:21:41.00 Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, 00:21:41.03\00:21:43.50 because His compassions fail not." 00:21:43.53\00:21:45.57 He could have easily consumed the disobedient 00:21:45.60\00:21:48.17 who went out on the Sabbath, 00:21:48.20\00:21:49.57 or kept more food during the night 00:21:49.60\00:21:51.21 but He was merciful. 00:21:51.24\00:21:52.77 And it says in verse 23, 00:21:52.81\00:21:54.64 "They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness. 00:21:54.68\00:21:59.21 The Lord is my portion," 00:21:59.25\00:22:00.62 he said take a certain portion every day, 00:22:00.65\00:22:03.35 says my soul, "therefore I hope in Him!" 00:22:03.39\00:22:06.72 All pointing back to the portion, 00:22:06.76\00:22:08.92 God's compassion, God's mercy in the wilderness. 00:22:08.96\00:22:11.99 Lesson number five, 00:22:12.03\00:22:13.56 the Sabbath was a test of loyalty 00:22:13.60\00:22:15.73 to the specificity of God's requirements. 00:22:15.76\00:22:18.90 Exodus 16:16. 00:22:18.93\00:22:20.54 This is the thing which the Lord has commanded. 00:22:20.57\00:22:23.57 He said, "Take a certain measure." 00:22:23.61\00:22:25.31 God was specific. 00:22:25.34\00:22:26.68 And, friends, if God is specific, 00:22:26.71\00:22:28.54 we should also be specific. 00:22:28.58\00:22:30.51 That's where tithing and offering comes in. 00:22:30.55\00:22:32.61 Don't just give God what you want, 00:22:32.65\00:22:34.58 give God what He requires. 00:22:34.62\00:22:37.09 Number six, 00:22:37.12\00:22:39.25 the Sabbath was a test of obedience 00:22:39.29\00:22:41.42 to the God of the Sabbath. 00:22:41.46\00:22:43.86 Exodus 16:27-28, 00:22:43.89\00:22:45.93 "Now what happened 00:22:45.96\00:22:47.30 that some of the people went out 00:22:47.33\00:22:48.66 on the seventh day to gather, 00:22:48.70\00:22:50.03 but they found none. 00:22:50.07\00:22:51.43 And the Lord said to Moses, 00:22:51.47\00:22:52.80 'How long do you refuse 00:22:52.83\00:22:54.44 to keep My commandments and My laws?'" 00:22:54.47\00:22:56.34 To those of you not keeping the commandments, 00:22:56.37\00:22:58.04 because you may not have heard about it, 00:22:58.07\00:22:59.91 I challenge you, 00:22:59.94\00:23:01.28 study the Sabbath and the Bible. 00:23:01.31\00:23:03.24 And as Ryan on my left, and Shelley on my right, 00:23:03.28\00:23:06.58 they both discovered in God's leading 00:23:06.61\00:23:09.35 the perpetuity of the law, 00:23:09.38\00:23:12.89 and they honored the Lord of the Sabbath 00:23:12.92\00:23:15.32 by accepting and embracing the Sabbath, 00:23:15.36\00:23:18.33 thus as Shelley said, the memory text, 00:23:18.36\00:23:21.26 the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. 00:23:21.30\00:23:25.13 Mark 2:27, "Therefore, 00:23:25.17\00:23:27.24 the Son of Man is Lord also of the Sabbath." 00:23:27.27\00:23:30.07 Is He Lord of your life is the question. 00:23:30.11\00:23:32.61 And lastly, the Sabbath was an outward test 00:23:32.64\00:23:36.04 of an inward commitment. 00:23:36.08\00:23:38.08 Ezekiel 20:12, "Moreover, 00:23:38.11\00:23:40.35 I also gave them my Sabbath to be a sign 00:23:40.38\00:23:43.69 between me and them, 00:23:43.72\00:23:45.22 that they might know that I'm the Lord 00:23:45.25\00:23:47.06 who sanctifies them." 00:23:47.09\00:23:48.92 We are only made holy 00:23:48.96\00:23:50.29 by honoring the Lord of the day, 00:23:50.33\00:23:52.26 the day doesn't sanctify us, 00:23:52.29\00:23:53.93 but by honoring His day that He blessed, 00:23:53.96\00:23:56.43 we are sanctified in our relationship. 00:23:56.46\00:23:58.33 And then verse 20, "Hallow My Sabbath, 00:23:58.37\00:24:01.80 and there will be a sign." 00:24:01.84\00:24:03.51 Is the sign missing, 00:24:03.54\00:24:05.04 a sign between Me and you, 00:24:05.07\00:24:07.11 that you may know that I am the Lord your God. 00:24:07.14\00:24:09.78 The Lord your God already picked the day, 00:24:09.81\00:24:12.01 you pick the Lord, 00:24:12.05\00:24:13.42 He'll give you the day 00:24:13.45\00:24:14.78 and you will enter into a sanctifying relationship 00:24:14.82\00:24:17.12 that will never change. 00:24:17.15\00:24:18.49 Amen. 00:24:18.52\00:24:19.85 You know, I actually celebrated the Sabbath 00:24:19.89\00:24:21.59 for two and a half years 00:24:21.62\00:24:23.02 before I discovered 3ABN 00:24:23.06\00:24:25.03 because I thought Adventist were a cult 00:24:25.06\00:24:30.13 and I wouldn't watch, 00:24:30.17\00:24:31.50 you know, at first I wouldn't watch, 00:24:31.53\00:24:32.87 then I found everything God was teaching me 00:24:32.90\00:24:35.00 is what they were teaching. 00:24:35.04\00:24:36.60 And now I am one, we'll be right back. 00:24:36.64\00:24:39.74 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:44.75\00:24:46.08 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, Praise the Lord. 00:25:21.02\00:25:22.35 Tuesday's lesson is entitled, "Time for Learning Priorities." 00:25:22.38\00:25:26.62 And, of course, we're on the theme 00:25:26.65\00:25:28.12 or the subject of the Sabbath. 00:25:28.16\00:25:29.49 And you know I've to say up front, 00:25:29.52\00:25:30.86 the Sabbath is definitely a time 00:25:30.89\00:25:32.46 in which we can learn priorities. 00:25:32.49\00:25:34.66 But it's also a time 00:25:34.70\00:25:36.03 in which your priorities can be examined or tested. 00:25:36.06\00:25:38.97 And that's essentially 00:25:39.00\00:25:40.34 what Tuesday's lesson deals with. 00:25:40.37\00:25:41.70 It kind of goes back into the history of Israel 00:25:41.74\00:25:44.64 and it uses Israel as an example, 00:25:44.67\00:25:46.34 the ups and the downs that Israel had 00:25:46.37\00:25:48.78 in the relationship with the Lord. 00:25:48.81\00:25:51.08 You know, what we seek, 00:25:51.11\00:25:52.45 essentially through the history of Israel, 00:25:52.48\00:25:54.12 and the history of the Old Testament 00:25:54.15\00:25:55.78 is this constant in and out of the children of Israel, 00:25:55.82\00:25:59.19 breaking up with God, coming back to God, 00:25:59.22\00:26:00.86 breaking up with God, coming back to God. 00:26:00.89\00:26:02.76 And essentially, it always was dealing 00:26:02.79\00:26:04.43 with the commandments of the Lord. 00:26:04.46\00:26:06.19 And the Sabbath was in the mix. 00:26:06.23\00:26:08.50 Many times, a couple of times in Scripture we have record, 00:26:08.53\00:26:11.47 where we see 00:26:11.50\00:26:12.83 that God specifically calls them out. 00:26:12.87\00:26:14.84 And He's addressing the fact that, 00:26:14.87\00:26:16.81 you know, He's seen their unwillingness 00:26:16.84\00:26:18.41 to respect the Sabbath, 00:26:18.44\00:26:20.31 essentially, as a sign of His irrelevance 00:26:20.34\00:26:22.41 in their own lives. 00:26:22.44\00:26:23.78 And unfortunately, there's many Christians 00:26:23.81\00:26:25.58 still today that have that issue, 00:26:25.61\00:26:27.18 the Lord is, the Sabbath is a test. 00:26:27.22\00:26:29.45 And we've been told that it's going to return 00:26:29.48\00:26:31.19 as the ultimate test. 00:26:31.22\00:26:32.75 How can God know that you are on His side 00:26:32.79\00:26:35.22 that you are His chosen, 00:26:35.26\00:26:36.66 He's going to send the Sabbath test. 00:26:36.69\00:26:38.13 And if you are willing to obey God 00:26:38.16\00:26:39.79 and receive that blessing, 00:26:39.83\00:26:41.16 then He knows that 00:26:41.20\00:26:42.53 that is a sign of His authority, 00:26:42.56\00:26:43.90 and that you are His special people. 00:26:43.93\00:26:45.67 But unfortunately, on the flip side of that, 00:26:45.70\00:26:47.14 we got people that will not receive 00:26:47.17\00:26:49.00 the Sabbath as a sign. 00:26:49.04\00:26:50.54 And we're going to talk about two extremes through this, 00:26:50.57\00:26:52.84 but I want to start in Jeremiah. 00:26:52.87\00:26:54.21 Let's go to Jeremiah 17:19-27. 00:26:54.24\00:26:58.68 There's a chance I may not read the entire passages 00:26:58.71\00:27:00.52 due to time. 00:27:00.55\00:27:01.88 But I want to highlight 00:27:01.92\00:27:03.25 a couple of passages in Scripture 00:27:03.28\00:27:04.62 before we get to the main one, 00:27:04.65\00:27:05.99 just to set the foundation 00:27:06.02\00:27:07.36 because you're going to see a couple of common themes 00:27:07.39\00:27:10.03 in these two passages. 00:27:10.06\00:27:11.39 We're going to read first from Jeremiah 17 here, 00:27:11.43\00:27:14.56 and then we're going to jump over to Nehemiah 00:27:14.60\00:27:16.16 and you're going to see a couple of, 00:27:16.20\00:27:18.27 you're going to see a pattern. 00:27:18.30\00:27:19.63 And then when we get to our passage in Isaiah, 00:27:19.67\00:27:21.40 we're really going to pick it up 00:27:21.44\00:27:22.77 and go home with it. 00:27:22.80\00:27:24.14 So Jeremiah 17, beginning with verse 19. 00:27:24.17\00:27:26.47 Notice what it says, "Thus the Lord said to me: 00:27:26.51\00:27:28.91 'Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, 00:27:28.94\00:27:31.91 by which the kings of Judah come in 00:27:31.95\00:27:33.65 and by which they go out, 00:27:33.68\00:27:35.38 and in all the gates of Jerusalem, 00:27:35.42\00:27:36.95 and say to them, 00:27:36.99\00:27:38.32 'Hear the word of the Lord, 00:27:38.35\00:27:39.69 you kings of Judah, and all Judah, 00:27:39.72\00:27:41.66 and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, 00:27:41.69\00:27:43.89 who enter by these gates. 00:27:43.93\00:27:45.86 Thus says the Lord: 'Take heed to yourselves, 00:27:45.89\00:27:48.20 and bear no burden on the Sabbath day.'" 00:27:48.23\00:27:51.50 Okay, so I just want to pause there 00:27:51.53\00:27:52.87 and highlight the fact that the, 00:27:52.90\00:27:54.27 that's the whole purpose of the fourth commandment 00:27:54.30\00:27:57.57 is that God is granting us rest in Him 00:27:57.61\00:28:00.84 and He is commanding us that not only should we rest, 00:28:00.88\00:28:04.08 but anyone within our influence and control, 00:28:04.11\00:28:06.01 we should allow them to rest, 00:28:06.05\00:28:07.45 even all the way down to our cattle. 00:28:07.48\00:28:08.85 That's right. 00:28:08.88\00:28:10.22 The Lord says it's a holy day, 00:28:10.25\00:28:11.59 we should remember we should observe, 00:28:11.62\00:28:12.95 we should honor this day as a day of communion, 00:28:12.99\00:28:15.39 a day of rest. 00:28:15.42\00:28:16.93 And so that's what He means by this burden. 00:28:16.96\00:28:19.13 The children of Israel were bringing in a burden 00:28:19.16\00:28:21.16 on the Sabbath, 00:28:21.20\00:28:22.53 because they were bringing in all of their labors, 00:28:22.56\00:28:24.03 all of their business transactions, 00:28:24.07\00:28:26.57 and they were defiling the Sabbath. 00:28:26.60\00:28:27.94 So that's why He says here, 00:28:27.97\00:28:29.30 "And bear no burden on the Sabbath day, 00:28:29.34\00:28:30.77 nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem, 00:28:30.81\00:28:33.34 nor carry a burden out of your house 00:28:33.38\00:28:35.68 on the Sabbath day, 00:28:35.71\00:28:37.05 nor do any work but hallowed the Sabbath day, 00:28:37.08\00:28:39.71 as I commanded your fathers." 00:28:39.75\00:28:42.48 And, of course, it goes on to say, 00:28:42.52\00:28:44.09 "But they did not obey or incline their ear 00:28:44.12\00:28:47.46 but made their neck stiff 00:28:47.49\00:28:49.32 that they might not hear nor receive instruction." 00:28:49.36\00:28:52.53 We're talking about education, right? 00:28:52.56\00:28:54.93 In order for you to be educated, 00:28:54.96\00:28:56.36 you got to be able to receive instruction, right? 00:28:56.40\00:28:59.30 But notice God's response in verse 27. 00:28:59.33\00:29:01.60 Let's go ahead and jump down to verse 27. 00:29:01.64\00:29:03.34 Here it says, "But if you will not heed Me 00:29:03.37\00:29:05.87 to hallow the Sabbath day, 00:29:05.91\00:29:08.28 such as not carrying a burden 00:29:08.31\00:29:10.28 when entering the gates of Jerusalem 00:29:10.31\00:29:11.98 on the Sabbath day, 00:29:12.01\00:29:13.35 then I will kindle a fire in its gates, 00:29:13.38\00:29:15.68 and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, 00:29:15.72\00:29:18.55 and it shall not be quenched." 00:29:18.59\00:29:21.29 And so, other words, 00:29:21.32\00:29:22.66 this is leading up to their great apostasy 00:29:22.69\00:29:25.26 in which they're going to fall. 00:29:25.29\00:29:26.63 And they're going to end up 00:29:26.66\00:29:28.00 in the hands of the Babylonians, 00:29:28.03\00:29:29.36 and under the rule of Nebuchadnezzar. 00:29:29.40\00:29:30.90 But ultimately, it began and we see the essential issue 00:29:30.93\00:29:33.90 was they were not only disobeying 00:29:33.94\00:29:35.94 all of God's commandments, 00:29:35.97\00:29:37.31 but they had come to the point 00:29:37.34\00:29:38.67 where they were completely dishonoring 00:29:38.71\00:29:40.04 God's Sabbath. 00:29:40.08\00:29:41.41 It showed their priority. God was not their priority. 00:29:41.44\00:29:43.95 The Sabbath was the test. 00:29:43.98\00:29:45.65 And you'll notice that the theme in here 00:29:45.68\00:29:47.32 was that God says don't bring in your burden. 00:29:47.35\00:29:49.52 What was the burden? I'll reiterate that. 00:29:49.55\00:29:51.49 They were bringing in their business, 00:29:51.52\00:29:53.32 they were defiling the Sabbath with their labors 00:29:53.36\00:29:55.56 and their daily ongoing business 00:29:55.59\00:29:57.16 that they would have done on days one through six. 00:29:57.19\00:29:59.26 Remember God says, "You shall work for six days, 00:29:59.29\00:30:01.93 you shall labor for six days. 00:30:01.96\00:30:03.30 But the seventh day 00:30:03.33\00:30:04.67 is the Sabbath of the Lord your God." 00:30:04.70\00:30:06.07 They were taking what would be done 00:30:06.10\00:30:07.60 on the six days of laboring working 00:30:07.64\00:30:09.80 and basically carrying out business transactions. 00:30:09.84\00:30:12.81 They were bringing that in on the Sabbath day 00:30:12.84\00:30:14.64 and God said, "I'm not going to have that. 00:30:14.68\00:30:16.34 You're going to be My people, 00:30:16.38\00:30:17.71 I need you to show Me your commitment." 00:30:17.75\00:30:19.11 And, of course, they would... 00:30:19.15\00:30:20.55 We just read there in verse 27, 00:30:20.58\00:30:22.28 that God had to kindle a fire 00:30:22.32\00:30:23.82 in the gates to get their attention. 00:30:23.85\00:30:25.29 We see this same theme over Nehemiah. 00:30:25.32\00:30:27.06 Okay. 00:30:27.09\00:30:28.42 Let's go to Nehemiah Chapter 13. 00:30:28.46\00:30:29.82 And then we're going to jump over 00:30:29.86\00:30:31.19 to Isaiah 58 afterwards. 00:30:31.23\00:30:33.96 So Nehemiah Chapter 13. 00:30:34.00\00:30:35.33 Notice the same common theme. 00:30:35.36\00:30:37.20 Nehemiah had the same issue. 00:30:37.23\00:30:40.04 I'm going to start reading in verse 19. 00:30:40.07\00:30:41.40 There it says, "So it was, at the gates of Jerusalem, 00:30:41.44\00:30:44.11 as it began to be dark before the Sabbath, 00:30:44.14\00:30:46.37 that I commanded the gates to be shut, 00:30:46.41\00:30:48.61 and charged that they must not be opened 00:30:48.64\00:30:51.18 till after the Sabbath." 00:30:51.21\00:30:52.55 I want to pause here and set the setting here. 00:30:52.58\00:30:54.78 This is now after the Babylonian captivity. 00:30:54.82\00:30:57.22 So before when we just read in Jeremiah, 00:30:57.25\00:30:59.42 that's before they went into captivity, 00:30:59.45\00:31:01.09 and because of their disobedience 00:31:01.12\00:31:02.46 to the Sabbath, 00:31:02.49\00:31:03.83 and the other commandments of the Lord. 00:31:03.86\00:31:05.19 Now they end up in 70 years of Babylonian captivity, 00:31:05.23\00:31:07.60 but now, Nehemiah is their leader. 00:31:07.63\00:31:10.83 He's helping them build the wall. 00:31:10.87\00:31:12.20 He's helping them reestablish Jerusalem 00:31:12.23\00:31:15.00 as an independent statehood, 00:31:15.04\00:31:16.64 and they are now, they're back to it again. 00:31:16.67\00:31:18.84 They're starting to defile the Sabbath. 00:31:18.87\00:31:20.41 So notice Nehemiah he, he lifts the bar, 00:31:20.44\00:31:23.01 notice what he says here. 00:31:23.04\00:31:24.38 He says, "Then I posted 00:31:24.41\00:31:25.75 some of my servants at the gate, 00:31:25.78\00:31:27.45 so that no burdens would be brought 00:31:27.48\00:31:29.38 on the Sabbath day." 00:31:29.42\00:31:30.95 So notice verse 20. 00:31:30.99\00:31:32.32 Now the merchants and sellers, 00:31:32.35\00:31:33.69 notice, here's the business aspect. 00:31:33.72\00:31:35.19 "Now the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares 00:31:35.22\00:31:37.93 lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 00:31:37.96\00:31:40.73 Then I warned them, and said to them, 00:31:40.76\00:31:42.16 'Why do you spend the night around the wall? 00:31:42.20\00:31:44.63 If you do so again," watch it he says, 00:31:44.67\00:31:47.24 "I will lay hands on you!'" 00:31:47.27\00:31:48.74 This brother meant business. 00:31:48.77\00:31:50.11 He said, "If I catch you defiling the Sabbath, 00:31:50.14\00:31:51.87 and bringing your business in and camping out here, 00:31:51.91\00:31:54.18 so that you can go ahead and conduct your business 00:31:54.21\00:31:56.28 to defile the Sabbath 00:31:56.31\00:31:57.65 and bring it within the gates of Jerusalem, 00:31:57.68\00:31:59.01 I will put hands on you. 00:31:59.05\00:32:00.38 Now, obviously, he didn't have enough hands 00:32:00.42\00:32:01.75 to put on all those people. 00:32:01.78\00:32:03.12 I'm sure he had other men that would back him up 00:32:03.15\00:32:06.02 and to carry out this action. 00:32:06.05\00:32:07.66 But what we're seeing here in these two passages 00:32:07.69\00:32:09.46 that we read in Jeremiah and Nehemiah 00:32:09.49\00:32:11.39 is we see that the business transactions, 00:32:11.43\00:32:13.50 the daily ongoing business that should have been done 00:32:13.53\00:32:16.00 on days one through six, 00:32:16.03\00:32:17.37 God is saying your priorities are wrong. 00:32:17.40\00:32:19.07 You're bringing them in on My holy day. 00:32:19.10\00:32:21.10 This is a day that I've given to you 00:32:21.14\00:32:22.47 to bless you, 00:32:22.50\00:32:23.84 to give you rest so that I can commune with you 00:32:23.87\00:32:25.77 and you can commune with your brothers 00:32:25.81\00:32:27.31 without all the labors 00:32:27.34\00:32:28.68 and the ongoing businesses of the day. 00:32:28.71\00:32:30.58 So now that leads us to Isaiah 58. 00:32:30.61\00:32:32.55 This is God's ultimate response. 00:32:32.58\00:32:34.58 Even though this was written many years 00:32:34.62\00:32:36.62 even before Jeremiah and Nehemiah, 00:32:36.65\00:32:38.79 God gave His ultimate response 00:32:38.82\00:32:40.66 to how the Sabbath should be conducted 00:32:40.69\00:32:42.82 and how it should be an ultimate test to us 00:32:42.86\00:32:45.33 and help us to prioritize the Sabbath business. 00:32:45.36\00:32:48.03 I have little time to do this. 00:32:48.06\00:32:49.40 So let's read through this really quickly. 00:32:49.43\00:32:50.97 Notice verse 13, 00:32:51.00\00:32:52.33 we're going to start Isaiah 58:13-14. 00:32:52.37\00:32:55.10 Notice what he says there, 00:32:55.14\00:32:56.47 "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath," 00:32:56.50\00:32:59.44 Now I just want to say it upfront, 00:32:59.47\00:33:01.31 again, you can do research on this and find this. 00:33:01.34\00:33:03.55 The English translations here really don't do this justice. 00:33:03.58\00:33:06.31 In fact, much of this if you dig a little deeper 00:33:06.35\00:33:08.62 into the original Hebrew, 00:33:08.65\00:33:09.98 you'll find that the message 00:33:10.02\00:33:11.49 is not entirely communicated as well 00:33:11.52\00:33:13.92 as it should be in the English. 00:33:13.96\00:33:15.62 When it says here, if you turn away your foot 00:33:15.66\00:33:17.53 from the Sabbath, in the original Hebrew, 00:33:17.56\00:33:19.53 it actually says, 00:33:19.56\00:33:20.90 if you turn away your foot from what you have it on, 00:33:20.93\00:33:24.23 and turn back to the Sabbath. 00:33:24.27\00:33:25.87 That's what God is ultimately saying, 00:33:25.90\00:33:27.24 Come back to the Sabbath. 00:33:27.27\00:33:28.74 And notice what He says, 00:33:28.77\00:33:30.11 from doing your pleasure on My holy day, 00:33:30.14\00:33:33.24 and call the Sabbath a delight, 00:33:33.27\00:33:35.28 the holy day of the Lord honorable 00:33:35.31\00:33:36.75 and you shall honor Him nor not doing your own ways, 00:33:36.78\00:33:40.02 nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, 00:33:40.05\00:33:44.02 then you show the light yourself in the Lord. 00:33:44.05\00:33:47.29 And that will cause you to ride up 00:33:47.32\00:33:48.66 on the high heels of the earth. 00:33:48.69\00:33:50.03 And God says 00:33:50.06\00:33:51.39 He's going to declare a blessing. 00:33:51.43\00:33:52.76 Look, in these little closing moments I have, 00:33:52.79\00:33:54.13 I want to make something clear here. 00:33:54.16\00:33:55.66 There's a lot of people who find themselves 00:33:55.70\00:33:57.87 in one of two extremes 00:33:57.90\00:33:59.23 when it comes to Sabbath keeping 00:33:59.27\00:34:00.60 and finding their priority in the Lord. 00:34:00.64\00:34:02.70 You have on one hand these people that are ultra, 00:34:02.74\00:34:05.47 I mean, it's legalistic approach 00:34:05.51\00:34:06.84 to say, you can't do this, 00:34:06.88\00:34:08.21 you can't do this, you can do this. 00:34:08.24\00:34:09.58 And when they read these words, finding, 00:34:09.61\00:34:10.95 you know doing your own pleasure, 00:34:10.98\00:34:12.31 finding your own pleasure, they look at that, 00:34:12.35\00:34:13.88 and they say there's nothing that can be done 00:34:13.92\00:34:15.62 on the Sabbath day, 00:34:15.65\00:34:16.99 and they do exactly the opposite of what God says, 00:34:17.02\00:34:18.95 they don't make it a delight. 00:34:18.99\00:34:20.59 They make it a horrible displeasure. 00:34:20.62\00:34:23.16 And a lot of people grow, 00:34:23.19\00:34:24.53 a lot of our young folks are growing up, 00:34:24.56\00:34:25.89 they're despising Sabbath keeping, 00:34:25.93\00:34:27.40 because of the oppression 00:34:27.43\00:34:28.76 and the legalistic approach 00:34:28.80\00:34:30.13 that we have toward the Sabbath. 00:34:30.17\00:34:31.50 And then on the flip side, 00:34:31.53\00:34:32.87 you got those people just like anything goes. 00:34:32.90\00:34:34.44 I can do anything I want on the Sabbath, 00:34:34.47\00:34:35.94 and they're doing exactly 00:34:35.97\00:34:37.31 what the Israelites done there in Jeremiah 17 00:34:37.34\00:34:40.54 and also in Nehemiah. 00:34:40.58\00:34:41.91 My friends, we got to find the happy medium. 00:34:41.94\00:34:43.48 Let me show you something here really quickly, 00:34:43.51\00:34:45.31 because I'm running out of time here. 00:34:45.35\00:34:47.55 In the original Hebrew here, 00:34:47.58\00:34:48.92 the common theme 00:34:48.95\00:34:50.29 that you see through this passage 00:34:50.32\00:34:51.65 in verses 13 and 14 00:34:51.69\00:34:53.02 is God saying do not do 00:34:53.05\00:34:54.39 your business pleasure on My day. 00:34:54.42\00:34:56.42 Do not do your business pleasure 00:34:56.46\00:34:58.39 on My house. 00:34:58.43\00:34:59.76 When it says do not find your own pleasure. 00:34:59.79\00:35:01.20 That doesn't mean, Ryan, 00:35:01.23\00:35:02.56 you know what if I strive by your home 00:35:02.60\00:35:03.93 and I see you throwing frisbee 00:35:03.97\00:35:05.30 with your wife out in the yard on Sabbath 00:35:05.33\00:35:07.00 oh, you're having a pleasurable moment, 00:35:07.04\00:35:09.04 you are sinning. 00:35:09.07\00:35:10.41 That is not what God is saying. 00:35:10.44\00:35:11.77 Sometimes we can, again pick things apart, 00:35:11.81\00:35:13.81 we need to make it a delight, 00:35:13.84\00:35:15.24 but make sure that we're not dishonoring 00:35:15.28\00:35:16.85 the Sabbath, 00:35:16.88\00:35:18.21 put our priorities in order 00:35:18.25\00:35:19.81 so that when we keep the Sabbath a delight 00:35:19.85\00:35:21.95 in honoring it, not doing work, 00:35:21.98\00:35:23.59 not doing our own pleasure. 00:35:23.62\00:35:24.95 At the same time, 00:35:24.99\00:35:26.32 we also are not going through just the motions 00:35:26.35\00:35:28.42 or honoring the Lord on His day, 00:35:28.46\00:35:30.26 as He has told us to do. 00:35:30.29\00:35:31.63 Amen. 00:35:31.66\00:35:32.99 Thank you so much, Ryan, 00:35:33.03\00:35:34.36 you perfectly set up what my day is, 00:35:34.40\00:35:36.26 "Time for Finding Balance." 00:35:36.30\00:35:38.87 Now, when I first read this title, 00:35:38.90\00:35:40.24 I hadn't really studied the lesson at all. 00:35:40.27\00:35:41.87 And when I got the assignment from Shelley there, 00:35:41.90\00:35:44.04 you have Wednesday time for finding balance. 00:35:44.07\00:35:46.47 I thought, oh, Lord Jesus, you know, I need this lesson, 00:35:46.51\00:35:49.81 just because balance can be a hard thing 00:35:49.84\00:35:52.38 to find in life. 00:35:52.41\00:35:53.75 And then I thought, 00:35:53.78\00:35:55.12 oh, the lesson has nothing to do with that. 00:35:55.15\00:35:56.48 And then I thought, 00:35:56.52\00:35:57.85 well maybe the lesson's about the Sabbath 00:35:57.89\00:35:59.69 and how that helps us achieve balance, 00:35:59.72\00:36:02.49 you know, come apart and rest a while. 00:36:02.52\00:36:04.99 But that's not what the lesson is about either. 00:36:05.03\00:36:07.23 It's about the balance between legalism 00:36:07.26\00:36:10.53 and keeping the Sabbath, 00:36:10.57\00:36:12.17 or relationship with the Lord of the Sabbath. 00:36:12.20\00:36:17.01 Just what Ryan ended with. 00:36:17.04\00:36:18.94 It's about how Jesus kept the Sabbath 00:36:18.97\00:36:22.88 versus how the Pharisees and Scribes 00:36:22.91\00:36:26.58 tried to enforce legalistic behavior 00:36:26.61\00:36:29.62 on the Sabbath. 00:36:29.65\00:36:31.39 That's what this lesson is about. 00:36:31.42\00:36:33.12 So I see five lessons as we talk about time 00:36:33.15\00:36:36.96 for finding balance. 00:36:36.99\00:36:38.33 Five lessons stood out to me as we read the scriptures. 00:36:38.36\00:36:40.80 Lesson number one, 00:36:40.83\00:36:42.16 spiritual legalism often comes in 00:36:42.20\00:36:45.60 through spiritual leadership. 00:36:45.63\00:36:49.20 Jesus made the Sabbath. 00:36:49.24\00:36:50.57 It was created in Eden. 00:36:50.61\00:36:51.94 Shelley talked about that, I'm in Genesis 2. 00:36:51.97\00:36:54.24 We were reminded of it on Mount Sinai 00:36:54.28\00:36:57.11 with the Ten Commandments. 00:36:57.15\00:36:58.68 Jesus demonstrated its beauty and relationship 00:36:58.71\00:37:01.22 when He walked this earth, 00:37:01.25\00:37:02.72 that was our memory text in Mark 2. 00:37:02.75\00:37:04.72 The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. 00:37:04.75\00:37:07.82 The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. 00:37:07.86\00:37:10.93 However, the Jewish leaders, 00:37:10.96\00:37:12.36 they were the spiritual leaders of the people. 00:37:12.39\00:37:15.80 They brought in legalism 00:37:15.83\00:37:17.97 to something that God had created 00:37:18.00\00:37:20.24 and God had beautified. 00:37:20.27\00:37:22.74 Spiritual legalism often comes in 00:37:22.77\00:37:25.77 through spiritual leadership. 00:37:25.81\00:37:28.81 They created laws 00:37:28.84\00:37:30.41 if you read in the Jewish Mishnah, 00:37:30.45\00:37:32.05 they created 39 categories for work 00:37:32.08\00:37:35.68 that was prohibited on the Sabbath. 00:37:35.72\00:37:37.69 And there's an entire list such things as carrying, 00:37:37.72\00:37:42.46 nothing can be removed from the house, 00:37:42.49\00:37:44.43 only things that were carried 00:37:44.46\00:37:46.59 were things that you put on or things that you wear, 00:37:46.63\00:37:49.76 such as burning, no burning, 00:37:49.80\00:37:52.20 no striking a match, 00:37:52.23\00:37:53.77 no turning on a stove, no driving a car, 00:37:53.80\00:37:56.34 no electric lights, no telephone, 00:37:56.37\00:37:58.27 because those things work by electricity. 00:37:58.31\00:38:01.31 Reaping, no plucking a flower or picking fruit from a tree, 00:38:01.34\00:38:06.05 no smelling of a flower on the Sabbath, 00:38:06.08\00:38:09.98 harvesting grain. 00:38:10.02\00:38:11.35 The lesson brought out, 00:38:11.39\00:38:12.85 some Rabbis discouraged walking through a grain field 00:38:12.89\00:38:16.49 if the grain was at ankle height, 00:38:16.52\00:38:18.13 because your ankle might accidentally knock off 00:38:18.16\00:38:21.03 the grain by stepping on it and that is threshing. 00:38:21.06\00:38:24.03 No threshing, no shearing, 00:38:24.07\00:38:26.33 and that includes combing the hair 00:38:26.37\00:38:28.00 because if you comb your hair, you might pull out a few hairs. 00:38:28.04\00:38:31.27 And that would be shearing. 00:38:31.31\00:38:33.78 So, but a soft brush was allowed. 00:38:33.81\00:38:35.98 The point is that legalism came in 00:38:36.01\00:38:39.71 and crept and took over the beauty of the Sabbath. 00:38:39.75\00:38:44.85 Lesson number two, the law is not the problem, 00:38:44.89\00:38:47.56 the interpretation of the law, that's the problem. 00:38:47.59\00:38:51.89 Psalm 19:7, David says, "The law of the Lord is" what? 00:38:51.93\00:38:55.66 "Perfect, converting the soul, 00:38:55.70\00:38:58.27 the testimony of the Lord is sure 00:38:58.30\00:38:59.87 making wise the simple." 00:38:59.90\00:39:02.50 Matthew 5, Jesus said, 00:39:02.54\00:39:04.11 the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5:17-18. 00:39:04.14\00:39:08.14 The Pharisees thought He's destroying the law. 00:39:08.18\00:39:10.58 They thought He's doing away with the law. 00:39:10.61\00:39:12.31 They were upset 00:39:12.35\00:39:13.82 because all they knew was legalism. 00:39:13.85\00:39:15.85 And then when He came 00:39:15.88\00:39:17.22 with this beautiful practice of how He kept the Sabbath, 00:39:17.25\00:39:20.89 they got scared 00:39:20.92\00:39:22.36 and so He says in Matthew 5:17-18, 00:39:22.39\00:39:24.59 "Do not think that I came to destroy 00:39:24.63\00:39:26.66 the law or the prophets. 00:39:26.70\00:39:28.46 He didn't come, the law, of course, 00:39:28.50\00:39:29.83 being the first five books of the Old Testament, 00:39:29.86\00:39:31.63 the prophets referring 00:39:31.67\00:39:33.00 to the rest of the Old Testament. 00:39:33.03\00:39:34.67 I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 00:39:34.70\00:39:38.24 "For assuredly, I say to you, 00:39:38.27\00:39:39.61 till heaven and earth pass away one jar 00:39:39.64\00:39:41.58 or one tittle will by no means, 00:39:41.61\00:39:43.68 pass from the law till all is fulfilled." 00:39:43.71\00:39:46.55 So Christ showed the permanence of Scripture. 00:39:46.58\00:39:51.05 And in the New Testament, the law was not done away with. 00:39:51.09\00:39:54.96 In fact, it was elevated and ennobled. 00:39:54.99\00:39:58.59 And He fulfilled that. 00:39:58.63\00:40:00.43 We see lesson number three, 00:40:00.46\00:40:02.20 spiritual things are to be looked at 00:40:02.23\00:40:04.83 through the lens of Jesus, not the law. 00:40:04.87\00:40:08.94 That's right. 00:40:08.97\00:40:10.31 Let's turn to Matthew 12. 00:40:10.34\00:40:11.67 Matthew Chapter 12, 00:40:11.71\00:40:13.04 this is the time where Jesus had an encounter 00:40:13.07\00:40:15.04 with the Pharisees and Scribes 00:40:15.08\00:40:17.41 over the keeping of the Sabbath. 00:40:17.45\00:40:20.25 Matthew 12, 00:40:20.28\00:40:21.62 we're going to jump through verses 1-8 quickly. 00:40:21.65\00:40:24.55 "At that time, Jesus went through the grainfields 00:40:24.59\00:40:26.65 on the Sabbath, 00:40:26.69\00:40:28.02 and his disciples were hungry, 00:40:28.06\00:40:29.76 and began to pluck heads of grain and eat. 00:40:29.79\00:40:32.29 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, 00:40:32.33\00:40:34.03 'Look, your disciples are doing 00:40:34.06\00:40:36.03 what is not lawful on the Sabbath.'" 00:40:36.06\00:40:39.03 Have you ever noticed that when you're legalistic, 00:40:39.07\00:40:41.24 you tend to judge other people? 00:40:41.27\00:40:44.77 "But he said to them, 00:40:44.81\00:40:46.14 'Have you not read but David did 00:40:46.17\00:40:47.51 when he was hungry, 00:40:47.54\00:40:48.88 he and those who were with Him. 00:40:48.91\00:40:50.25 How we entered the house of God and ate the showbread, 00:40:50.28\00:40:52.15 which was not lawful for him to eat, 00:40:52.18\00:40:54.08 nor for those who were with him, 00:40:54.12\00:40:55.55 but only for the priests, 00:40:55.58\00:40:57.39 or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath, 00:40:57.42\00:40:59.35 the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath 00:40:59.39\00:41:01.26 and are blameless, 00:41:01.29\00:41:02.72 yet I say to you, in this place, 00:41:02.76\00:41:04.26 there is one greater than the temple. 00:41:04.29\00:41:07.10 But if you had known what this means, 00:41:07.13\00:41:08.73 I desire mercy and not sacrifice, 00:41:08.76\00:41:11.03 you would not have condemned the guiltless. 00:41:11.07\00:41:13.94 For the Son of Man is Lord, even of the Sabbath." 00:41:13.97\00:41:17.61 Jesus was there in person, in the flesh, 00:41:17.64\00:41:20.24 much greater than anything they had known or studied. 00:41:20.28\00:41:23.75 And they're setting these laws and these rules, 00:41:23.78\00:41:26.41 they're looking at things through the filter of the law, 00:41:26.45\00:41:29.28 or their legalistic interpretation 00:41:29.32\00:41:31.05 of the law, 00:41:31.09\00:41:32.42 versus the lens or filter of Jesus. 00:41:32.45\00:41:35.32 The debater issue in this passage 00:41:35.36\00:41:37.59 is not whether the Sabbath 00:41:37.63\00:41:38.96 should be observed or abolished. 00:41:38.99\00:41:40.90 The issue is how it should be kept, 00:41:40.93\00:41:43.60 and who has the authority to make that determination. 00:41:43.63\00:41:47.90 The Pharisees followed the traditions 00:41:47.94\00:41:49.64 commanded by the Rabbis. 00:41:49.67\00:41:51.47 Jesus claimed the ultimate authority 00:41:51.51\00:41:53.64 because He was Lord of the Sabbath, 00:41:53.68\00:41:56.44 He had made it. 00:41:56.48\00:41:58.11 The Sabbath is a day of mercy, 00:41:58.15\00:41:59.98 of relieving pain and suffering, 00:42:00.02\00:42:02.28 of restoring and redeeming, of fulfilling basic needs. 00:42:02.32\00:42:05.75 There's a quote from Desire of Ages, 00:42:05.79\00:42:07.19 I like in page 284. 00:42:07.22\00:42:09.72 It says, "In the days of Christ, 00:42:09.76\00:42:11.56 the Sabbath had become so perverted, 00:42:11.59\00:42:14.50 that its observance 00:42:14.53\00:42:15.86 reflected the character of selfish and arbitrary men, 00:42:15.90\00:42:19.60 rather than the character of a loving Heavenly Father. 00:42:19.63\00:42:24.31 That's what Jesus came to, 00:42:24.34\00:42:26.84 to eradicate that the way 00:42:26.88\00:42:29.24 that they were interpreting the Sabbath 00:42:29.28\00:42:31.05 and to bring about a new way to look at 00:42:31.08\00:42:33.98 and Shelley always says, 00:42:34.02\00:42:35.68 celebrate the Sabbath. 00:42:35.72\00:42:38.09 Lesson number four, 00:42:38.12\00:42:39.45 relationships are more important than rules. 00:42:39.49\00:42:43.69 Restoration and redemption are more important 00:42:43.73\00:42:47.93 than criticism and judgment. 00:42:47.96\00:42:50.70 Matthew 12, we're in the same chapter 00:42:50.73\00:42:53.30 just verses 9-13. 00:42:53.34\00:42:55.80 So Jesus just has this encounter 00:42:55.84\00:42:57.17 with the Pharisees 00:42:57.21\00:42:58.54 all over the keeping of the Sabbath 00:42:58.57\00:42:59.97 with the disciples, 00:43:00.01\00:43:01.34 and now He went to the synagogue, 00:43:01.38\00:43:02.91 and there's a man with a withered hand, 00:43:02.94\00:43:05.21 and they said, 00:43:05.25\00:43:06.58 "Is it okay to heal on the Sabbath?" 00:43:06.61\00:43:08.85 Verse 11, "He said to them, 00:43:08.88\00:43:10.22 'What man is there among you who has one sheep, 00:43:10.25\00:43:12.89 if it falls into the pit on the Sabbath 00:43:12.92\00:43:14.62 will not lay hold of it and lift it up? 00:43:14.66\00:43:17.23 Of how much more value is a man than a sheep? 00:43:17.26\00:43:21.20 Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath, 00:43:21.23\00:43:24.30 and then he went and healed the man 00:43:24.33\00:43:26.63 with the withered hand." 00:43:26.67\00:43:28.47 People are vastly more important than animals, 00:43:28.50\00:43:31.54 and yet they were elevating animals, 00:43:31.57\00:43:33.81 and trying to do good to animals 00:43:33.84\00:43:35.38 while ignoring the people. 00:43:35.41\00:43:38.35 Lesson number five, 00:43:38.38\00:43:39.71 the Sabbath is the day for healing. 00:43:39.75\00:43:41.58 It's a day for deliverance. 00:43:41.62\00:43:43.62 It's a day for freedom. 00:43:43.65\00:43:45.92 We won't reference it, but in Luke Chapter 13, 00:43:45.95\00:43:49.02 we won't read it. 00:43:49.06\00:43:50.39 But in Luke 13:10-17, 00:43:50.43\00:43:53.60 you see the story of the woman 00:43:53.63\00:43:55.16 with a spirit of infirmity for 18 years, 00:43:55.20\00:43:57.80 and she was bent over and could not even raise up. 00:43:57.83\00:44:01.04 And Jesus said, 00:44:01.07\00:44:02.40 woman you are loosed from your infirmity, 00:44:02.44\00:44:04.44 but the ruler of the synagogue got mad, 00:44:04.47\00:44:06.98 and said, there's six days to be to work 00:44:07.01\00:44:09.44 and she could have been healed 00:44:09.48\00:44:10.81 on one of those six. 00:44:10.85\00:44:12.18 Why is this happening now? 00:44:12.21\00:44:13.55 And the Lord was pretty strong. 00:44:13.58\00:44:14.92 He said, hypocrite, 00:44:14.95\00:44:16.28 does not each of you on the Sabbath 00:44:16.32\00:44:17.75 lose his donkey. 00:44:17.79\00:44:19.12 Here we come to the animals again 00:44:19.15\00:44:20.49 and how they treated them. 00:44:20.52\00:44:22.06 And how much more this woman 00:44:22.09\00:44:23.86 who has been bound for 18 years by Satan, 00:44:23.89\00:44:26.83 should she not be set free on the Sabbath? 00:44:26.86\00:44:30.87 One more quote from Desire of Ages. 00:44:30.90\00:44:32.60 I really liked this one. 00:44:32.63\00:44:33.97 It's on page 287. 00:44:34.00\00:44:36.54 When Jesus turned upon the Pharisees, 00:44:36.57\00:44:38.74 with the question whether it was lawful 00:44:38.77\00:44:40.28 on the Sabbath to do good or evil, 00:44:40.31\00:44:42.31 to save life or kill, 00:44:42.34\00:44:43.85 He confronted them with their own wicked purposes. 00:44:43.88\00:44:47.05 They were hunting His life with bitter hatred 00:44:47.08\00:44:49.85 while He was saving life 00:44:49.88\00:44:51.92 and bringing happiness to multitudes. 00:44:51.95\00:44:54.59 Was it better to slay on the Sabbath 00:44:54.62\00:44:56.42 as they were planning to do 00:44:56.46\00:44:58.06 than to heal the afflicted as He had done. 00:44:58.09\00:45:01.13 Was it more righteous to have murder in the heart 00:45:01.16\00:45:03.73 on God's holy day than love to all men 00:45:03.77\00:45:07.97 which finds expression in deeds of mercy? 00:45:08.00\00:45:11.37 You know what that gets back to is the motive. 00:45:11.41\00:45:14.61 What is the motive of our heart when we keep 00:45:14.64\00:45:18.75 and celebrate the Sabbath? 00:45:18.78\00:45:20.78 Is it because we love God? 00:45:20.82\00:45:22.82 And we love Jesus 00:45:22.85\00:45:24.52 and we want to spend time with Him 00:45:24.55\00:45:26.92 and be made into His image, 00:45:26.96\00:45:29.12 or is it because we're all about those rules 00:45:29.16\00:45:31.76 and do's and don'ts. 00:45:31.79\00:45:33.33 I pray that each one of us experience 00:45:33.36\00:45:35.40 the joy of the Sabbath. 00:45:35.43\00:45:37.33 Amen. Amen. 00:45:37.37\00:45:38.80 Praise the Lord. 00:45:38.83\00:45:40.17 You know, some people may be listening 00:45:40.20\00:45:41.70 and maybe saying, 00:45:41.74\00:45:43.07 don't those people know 00:45:43.10\00:45:44.44 that the Sabbath is for the Jews, 00:45:44.47\00:45:46.81 that the Sabbath has been done away with. 00:45:46.84\00:45:49.34 But, you know, I want to read to you 00:45:49.38\00:45:51.05 the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:17, 18, and 19, 00:45:51.08\00:45:56.65 "Do not think that I came to destroy 00:45:56.69\00:45:59.49 the law or the prophets. 00:45:59.52\00:46:00.86 I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 00:46:00.89\00:46:04.06 For assuredly, I say to you, 00:46:04.09\00:46:05.43 till heaven and earth pass away, 00:46:05.46\00:46:07.86 one jot or one tittle will by no means 00:46:07.90\00:46:10.67 pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 00:46:10.70\00:46:13.54 Whoever therefore breaks 00:46:13.57\00:46:15.10 one of the least of these commandments, 00:46:15.14\00:46:17.77 and teaches men so, 00:46:17.81\00:46:19.41 shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven, 00:46:19.44\00:46:21.74 but whoever does and teaches them, 00:46:21.78\00:46:24.48 he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." 00:46:24.51\00:46:27.52 So as we look at this, we ask ourselves, 00:46:27.55\00:46:30.12 did Jesus do away with the Sabbath? 00:46:30.15\00:46:32.35 No, according to what Jesus said, No. 00:46:32.39\00:46:35.12 I pointed to Matthew 24:20, 00:46:35.16\00:46:37.36 if someone would do me a favor reading Matthew 24:20, 00:46:37.39\00:46:41.00 because there Jesus is talking 00:46:41.03\00:46:44.60 and the context of that is Jesus talking 00:46:44.63\00:46:46.27 about the destruction of Jerusalem, 00:46:46.30\00:46:48.40 which took place in 70 AD. 00:46:48.44\00:46:50.74 Pastor John Lomacang will read Matthew 24:20. 00:46:50.77\00:46:54.34 Jesus said, "And pray that your flight 00:46:54.38\00:46:56.54 may not be in winter or on the Sabbath." 00:46:56.58\00:47:00.55 Thank you so much. 00:47:00.58\00:47:01.92 I know you could preach a whole sermon on that. 00:47:01.95\00:47:03.59 But thank you for reading that. 00:47:03.62\00:47:05.95 Here we see Jesus talking about pray 00:47:05.99\00:47:09.52 that your flight or your escape from Jerusalem 00:47:09.56\00:47:13.66 from escaping Jerusalem 00:47:13.70\00:47:16.43 because Jerusalem was going to be destroyed, 00:47:16.46\00:47:18.47 pray that it's not in the winter, 00:47:18.50\00:47:19.93 because of the harshness of the winter, 00:47:19.97\00:47:22.04 nor on the Sabbath day. 00:47:22.07\00:47:24.24 Jesus expected His followers to be keeping the Sabbath 00:47:24.27\00:47:27.84 even in 70 AD, and even today. 00:47:27.88\00:47:31.15 That's right. Amen. 00:47:31.18\00:47:32.51 So now I pointed to Mark Chapter 11 00:47:32.55\00:47:34.92 because the title of this lesson 00:47:34.95\00:47:37.05 is "Time for Community." 00:47:37.09\00:47:38.55 Jesus wants His community 00:47:38.59\00:47:40.62 of believers to be united 00:47:40.66\00:47:42.46 in the understanding that they should keep 00:47:42.49\00:47:44.59 the commandments of God. 00:47:44.63\00:47:45.96 That's why Jesus said, "If you love Me, 00:47:45.99\00:47:48.03 keep My commandments." 00:47:48.06\00:47:49.46 John 14:15. 00:47:49.50\00:47:51.60 Mark 11:15-17. 00:47:51.63\00:47:53.84 Notice this, "So they came to Jerusalem, 00:47:53.87\00:47:56.20 Then Jesus went into the temple, 00:47:56.24\00:47:58.27 and began to drive out those who bought 00:47:58.31\00:48:00.84 and sold in the temple 00:48:00.88\00:48:02.54 and overturned the tables of the money changers 00:48:02.58\00:48:05.71 and the seats of those who sold doves. 00:48:05.75\00:48:08.42 And He would not allow anyone to carry wares 00:48:08.45\00:48:11.32 through the temple. 00:48:11.35\00:48:12.69 Then He taught, saying to them, 00:48:12.72\00:48:15.86 "Is it not written, 00:48:15.89\00:48:17.59 My house shall be called a house of prayer 00:48:17.63\00:48:21.66 for all nations, 00:48:21.70\00:48:23.40 but you have made it a den of thieves." 00:48:23.43\00:48:26.53 Now, why did I read this scripture? 00:48:26.57\00:48:28.40 This scripture, particularly verse 17, 00:48:28.44\00:48:32.31 is taken from the context of keeping the Sabbath, 00:48:32.34\00:48:35.81 keeping God's laws, 00:48:35.84\00:48:37.18 and I'm going to point you to that in a moment. 00:48:37.21\00:48:38.61 But notice that Jesus says, 00:48:38.65\00:48:39.98 "My house shall be called the 00:48:40.02\00:48:41.55 house of prayer for all nations." 00:48:41.58\00:48:43.59 It is, was God's purpose from the beginning, 00:48:43.62\00:48:46.72 that all of His creatures 00:48:46.76\00:48:48.82 should be keeping the Sabbath day. 00:48:48.86\00:48:50.19 This is why you heard Shelley Quinn saying 00:48:50.23\00:48:52.26 that the Sabbath was sanctify when? 00:48:52.29\00:48:55.16 During on the seventh day. That's right. 00:48:55.20\00:48:58.17 At creation God sanctified the Sabbath day 00:48:58.20\00:49:01.64 when there was no distinction of nations. 00:49:01.67\00:49:04.87 They were, we were all one, one big family. 00:49:04.91\00:49:08.31 That's what and had not sin entered into the world, 00:49:08.34\00:49:11.85 God's people would have been keeping 00:49:11.88\00:49:13.72 the Sabbath day uninterrupted. 00:49:13.75\00:49:16.65 Isn't that marvelous? 00:49:16.69\00:49:18.02 Now, why did I read this scripture? 00:49:18.05\00:49:19.42 Jesus said, "My house shall be called 00:49:19.45\00:49:21.29 the house of prayer for all nations." 00:49:21.32\00:49:22.89 Let's go to where this is taken from. 00:49:22.92\00:49:24.53 Isaiah 56. 00:49:24.56\00:49:26.49 Isaiah 56:4-7, 00:49:26.53\00:49:30.00 I have to give a little bit of context there. 00:49:30.03\00:49:32.73 Notice, "For thus, says the Lord, 00:49:32.77\00:49:35.34 'To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbath 00:49:35.37\00:49:38.27 and choose what pleases Me 00:49:38.31\00:49:40.68 and hold fast my covenant, 00:49:40.71\00:49:43.21 even to them, 00:49:43.24\00:49:44.58 I will give in My house and within My walls a place 00:49:44.61\00:49:48.48 and a name better than that of the sons 00:49:48.52\00:49:50.89 and daughters. 00:49:50.92\00:49:52.25 I will give them an everlasting name 00:49:52.29\00:49:53.99 that shall not be cut off. 00:49:54.02\00:49:55.76 Also the sons of the foreigner 00:49:55.79\00:49:59.06 who joined themselves to the Lord 00:49:59.09\00:50:01.53 to serve Him 00:50:01.56\00:50:02.90 and to love the name of the Lord to be His servants, 00:50:02.93\00:50:05.33 everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, 00:50:05.37\00:50:09.74 and hold fast to My covenant.'" 00:50:09.77\00:50:12.24 So God is including all nations here. 00:50:12.27\00:50:14.74 Notice, "Even then I will bring to My holy mountain, 00:50:14.78\00:50:19.58 and make them joyful in My house of prayer. 00:50:19.61\00:50:22.75 Their burnt offerings 00:50:22.78\00:50:24.15 and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar, 00:50:24.19\00:50:27.92 for My house shall be called 00:50:27.96\00:50:29.36 a house of prayer for all nations." 00:50:29.39\00:50:31.96 So it was God's intended purpose 00:50:31.99\00:50:34.53 that the Jews were to teach all the other nations 00:50:34.56\00:50:37.97 the wonderful things the Lord had taught them. 00:50:38.00\00:50:40.90 And notice, of course, it says here, 00:50:40.94\00:50:42.97 the Lord will accept their sacrifices. 00:50:43.00\00:50:45.27 Well, this was in the context before Jesus died on the cross. 00:50:45.31\00:50:49.04 We know that Jesus fulfilled all the sacrifices, 00:50:49.08\00:50:52.35 because He is the Lamb of God 00:50:52.38\00:50:53.82 that takes away the sin of the world. 00:50:53.85\00:50:55.42 While the sacrificial system was done away with, 00:50:55.45\00:50:58.12 the Sabbath 00:50:58.15\00:50:59.49 which was instituted at creation 00:50:59.52\00:51:01.52 was not done away with 00:51:01.56\00:51:02.89 because it is not a symbol or a shadow of anything. 00:51:02.92\00:51:05.76 It identifies God as our Creator. 00:51:05.79\00:51:09.76 Our Creator. 00:51:09.80\00:51:11.13 And so all nations were supposed to have 00:51:11.17\00:51:14.40 God's house as a house of prayer. 00:51:14.44\00:51:16.84 This is a marvelous understanding. 00:51:16.87\00:51:18.51 So the Lord hallowed, 00:51:18.54\00:51:19.87 sanctified the seventh day before any nation existed. 00:51:19.91\00:51:23.31 And you heard was said here, 00:51:23.35\00:51:25.45 that the Sabbath was made for man 00:51:25.48\00:51:27.62 and not man for the Sabbath. 00:51:27.65\00:51:29.05 Man in general, everyone. 00:51:29.08\00:51:31.32 Now let's look at some scriptures 00:51:31.35\00:51:33.42 that highlight that God's people 00:51:33.46\00:51:36.02 continue to keep the Sabbath even after crucifixion 00:51:36.06\00:51:39.59 and the resurrection of Christ. 00:51:39.63\00:51:41.43 Let's move to Acts Chapter 16. 00:51:41.46\00:51:44.63 And I'm going to ask someone to read Acts 17:1-5, 00:51:44.67\00:51:49.90 1-4 in a moment, 00:51:49.94\00:51:51.27 but I'm going to read Acts 16:13-14, 00:51:51.31\00:51:54.31 "And on the Sabbath day, 00:51:54.34\00:51:56.01 we went out of the city to the riverside," 00:51:56.04\00:51:58.48 it's okay to go out of the city, 00:51:58.51\00:52:00.18 to go to the riverside on the Sabbath, 00:52:00.22\00:52:02.08 "where prayer was customarily made 00:52:02.12\00:52:04.69 and we sat down 00:52:04.72\00:52:06.05 and spoke to the women who met there. 00:52:06.09\00:52:08.32 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. 00:52:08.36\00:52:10.43 She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, 00:52:10.46\00:52:13.76 who worshiped God. 00:52:13.80\00:52:15.13 The Lord opened her heart 00:52:15.16\00:52:16.60 to heed the things spoken by Paul." 00:52:16.63\00:52:19.13 So we see here, 00:52:19.17\00:52:20.50 these are people that were keeping the Sabbath, 00:52:20.54\00:52:23.51 and even another lady that was not part of the Jews. 00:52:23.54\00:52:27.44 Now, let's go to Acts 17:1-4 who will read that for us? 00:52:27.48\00:52:32.65 Let me read. Okay. 00:52:32.68\00:52:34.02 You said Acts 17? 00:52:34.05\00:52:35.38 Acts 17:1-4. Okay. 00:52:35.42\00:52:36.75 Acts 17:1-4, 00:52:36.79\00:52:38.12 "Now when they had passed through Amphipolis, " 00:52:38.15\00:52:42.19 there we go, 00:52:42.22\00:52:43.56 "and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, 00:52:43.59\00:52:47.43 where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 00:52:47.46\00:52:49.20 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, 00:52:49.23\00:52:51.90 and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them 00:52:51.93\00:52:54.10 from the Scriptures, 00:52:54.14\00:52:55.47 explaining and demonstrating that Christ had to suffer 00:52:55.50\00:52:58.27 and rise again from the dead, 00:52:58.31\00:52:59.81 and saying, 00:52:59.84\00:53:01.18 'This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.' 00:53:01.21\00:53:04.05 And some of them were persuaded, 00:53:04.08\00:53:05.61 and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, 00:53:05.65\00:53:08.28 and not a few of the leading women, 00:53:08.32\00:53:13.05 joined Paul and Silas." 00:53:13.09\00:53:14.42 Thank you so much. 00:53:14.46\00:53:15.79 So we see here 00:53:15.82\00:53:17.16 that the Greeks also studied on the Sabbath 00:53:17.19\00:53:21.20 and Paul reasoned with them from the scriptures. 00:53:21.23\00:53:23.97 Let's go ahead and move to Acts Chapter 13. 00:53:24.00\00:53:27.00 Paul is talking to the Jews. 00:53:27.04\00:53:29.10 And He's spending a moment. 00:53:29.14\00:53:32.27 Actually, I need to skip that one 00:53:32.31\00:53:33.91 because of the time. 00:53:33.94\00:53:35.51 Let's go to Acts 18. 00:53:35.54\00:53:36.88 Acts 18:1-4, notice, 00:53:36.91\00:53:41.22 "After these things Paul departed from Athens 00:53:41.25\00:53:43.89 and went to Corinth. 00:53:43.92\00:53:45.25 And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, 00:53:45.29\00:53:48.86 who had recently come from Italy 00:53:48.89\00:53:50.63 with his wife Priscilla 00:53:50.66\00:53:51.99 because Claudius had commanded all the Jews 00:53:52.03\00:53:54.23 to depart from Rome, and he came to them. 00:53:54.26\00:53:56.50 So, because he was of the same trade, 00:53:56.53\00:53:58.67 he stayed with them and worked, 00:53:58.70\00:54:00.04 for by occupation they were tent makers. 00:54:00.07\00:54:02.54 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, 00:54:02.57\00:54:05.44 and persuaded both Jews and Greeks." 00:54:05.47\00:54:09.54 And so, we have many instances like, 00:54:09.58\00:54:13.72 we don't have time to read Acts Chapter 13, 00:54:13.75\00:54:15.98 where it says there in verse 42, 00:54:16.02\00:54:17.89 that the Gentiles begged 00:54:17.92\00:54:20.02 that the gospel would be preached to them 00:54:20.06\00:54:22.99 on the next Sabbath, interesting. 00:54:23.02\00:54:24.99 You had other days of the week, 00:54:25.03\00:54:26.36 but they asked for the Sabbath day. 00:54:26.39\00:54:27.73 Isn't that interesting? 00:54:27.76\00:54:29.10 Now, let's go to Genesis 26:4-5. 00:54:29.13\00:54:35.17 God is talking to Abraham and the Lord says, 00:54:35.20\00:54:37.27 "I will make your descendants multiply 00:54:37.31\00:54:39.61 as the stars of heaven, 00:54:39.64\00:54:40.98 I will give to you and descendants, 00:54:41.01\00:54:42.94 all these lands and in your seed 00:54:42.98\00:54:44.75 all the nations of the earth shall be blessed. 00:54:44.78\00:54:47.88 Because Abraham obeyed My voice, kept My charge, 00:54:47.92\00:54:51.09 My commandments, My statutes and My laws." 00:54:51.12\00:54:53.49 Why? 00:54:53.52\00:54:54.86 This is in Genesis before Mount Sinai 00:54:54.89\00:54:58.36 before it was written on stone. 00:54:58.39\00:55:00.23 We already have the evidence of God's servant Abraham 00:55:00.26\00:55:02.46 keeping God's commandments, keeping the Sabbath, 00:55:02.50\00:55:05.57 which is one of the commandments. 00:55:05.60\00:55:07.27 And so, Exodus 20:8-11, do I have time? 00:55:07.30\00:55:10.74 Let's try. 00:55:10.77\00:55:12.11 "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. 00:55:12.14\00:55:13.78 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 00:55:13.81\00:55:16.31 but the seventh day is the Sabbath 00:55:16.34\00:55:18.08 of the Lord your God. 00:55:18.11\00:55:19.45 In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, 00:55:19.48\00:55:21.58 nor your daughter, nor your male servant, 00:55:21.62\00:55:23.69 nor your female servant, nor your cattle, 00:55:23.72\00:55:25.22 nor your stranger who is within your gates. 00:55:25.25\00:55:27.52 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, 00:55:27.56\00:55:30.36 the sea, and all that is in them, 00:55:30.39\00:55:32.59 and rested the seventh day. 00:55:32.63\00:55:34.30 Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day 00:55:34.33\00:55:36.16 and hallowed it. 00:55:36.20\00:55:37.53 He expects you and I to do the same. 00:55:37.57\00:55:39.40 Amen and amen. 00:55:39.43\00:55:40.87 Thank you so much. What a beautiful study. 00:55:40.90\00:55:43.54 Appreciate each and every one of you. 00:55:43.57\00:55:45.77 Why don't you each take a moment 00:55:45.81\00:55:47.24 to just give a final thought? 00:55:47.28\00:55:49.44 Well, mine was talking about the Sabbath and rediscovery. 00:55:49.48\00:55:52.45 The Sabbath is a time for you 00:55:52.48\00:55:54.35 to rediscover your roots as sons and daughters of God. 00:55:54.38\00:55:58.29 Only when you connect with your roots in Christ, 00:55:58.32\00:56:01.82 and the Sabbath is that connecting link 00:56:01.86\00:56:04.13 will you be able to appreciate not only how creation began, 00:56:04.16\00:56:08.46 but how it will continue 00:56:08.50\00:56:09.83 and how eternity is going to be rediscover your roots. 00:56:09.86\00:56:13.70 Christ is waiting for you. Amen. 00:56:13.74\00:56:16.54 I would just say that the Sabbath is, 00:56:16.57\00:56:18.51 should be pleasurable, it should be a delight. 00:56:18.54\00:56:20.84 The Bible says that we should delight in it. 00:56:20.88\00:56:23.38 So in keeping the Sabbath, 00:56:23.41\00:56:24.81 we're showing God that He is our God, 00:56:24.85\00:56:27.02 and we are His people. 00:56:27.05\00:56:28.38 So make the Lord your God and obey Him in every aspect. 00:56:28.42\00:56:31.72 Amen. 00:56:31.75\00:56:33.09 I had time for finding balance. 00:56:33.12\00:56:34.46 And I love that 00:56:34.49\00:56:35.82 because the Sabbath is about relationship, 00:56:35.86\00:56:37.69 relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:56:37.73\00:56:39.86 and relationship with others, with family and in community, 00:56:39.89\00:56:43.30 as a body in Christ. 00:56:43.33\00:56:44.67 So make a decision 00:56:44.70\00:56:46.03 to make that relationship central in your life. 00:56:46.07\00:56:49.17 Amen. Amen. 00:56:49.20\00:56:50.54 And I want to say time for community, 00:56:50.57\00:56:52.31 God expects His children to rejoice in the Lord. 00:56:52.34\00:56:56.75 And to understand 00:56:56.78\00:56:58.11 that the law of the Lord is perfect, 00:56:58.15\00:57:00.42 cannot change because it's already perfect. 00:57:00.45\00:57:02.32 You can't make it better because God made it perfect. 00:57:02.35\00:57:05.39 Amen and amen. 00:57:05.42\00:57:06.76 I just want to go back once more to think 00:57:06.79\00:57:08.59 about that first Sabbath of Adam and Eve. 00:57:08.62\00:57:11.89 It certainly wasn't a passive experience. 00:57:11.93\00:57:15.76 I guarantee you, they were celebrating, 00:57:15.80\00:57:18.13 they were celebrating the Creator. 00:57:18.17\00:57:20.24 They were celebrating creation, 00:57:20.27\00:57:22.67 and they were celebrating each other, 00:57:22.70\00:57:24.21 and I believe 00:57:24.24\00:57:25.57 that's what God would have us to do. 00:57:25.61\00:57:27.74 The Sabbath is a benefit to man. 00:57:27.78\00:57:30.48 It is a time to be astonished at our Father's love. 00:57:30.51\00:57:34.58 It is a time for rediscovery for learning priorities, 00:57:34.62\00:57:39.85 for finding balance and enjoying community. 00:57:39.89\00:57:44.76 The Sabbath is a blessing to be celebrated. 00:57:44.79\00:57:47.66 Well, we hope 00:57:47.70\00:57:49.03 that you will join us next week. 00:57:49.06\00:57:50.57 We're going to have our final lesson, 00:57:50.60\00:57:52.03 lesson 13 00:57:52.07\00:57:53.47 and it is "Heaven, Education and Eternal Learning." 00:57:53.50\00:57:59.94 We'll see you next time.
