Sabbath was created to
be a benefit to mankind.

It was a time to be
astonished at our Father's love,

a time for rediscovering
for learning priorities,

finding balance, a
time for community.

And the benefit was to us

that we had a day
off from our labors

and we had to
focus on God's blessing.

The Sabbath School
quarterly started off

with an interesting story
about two ladies Jody and Gail.

And Jody was the only
one in her graduate program,

who was a Seventh-day Adventist.

Well, everybody knew

she operated a
little differently.

Well, her friend Gail,

her husband was going
out of town for six weeks.

So she calls Jody and says,

Well, they do.

And they listen
to Christian music

and they talk about the
Lord and they eat together.

Well, what happened
after four Sabbaths had passed,

was downtown shopping.

And it was on a Friday,

and all of a
sudden she looks at her

watch and thinks,

"Wonderful.

The Sabbath is about to begin."

And she's getting
ready to rush home

and she realizes
how much she had grown

in her
relationship with the Lord

as she had
celebrated God's Sabbath.

So let's look at
Sunday, time to be astonished.

The first two
chapters of Genesis

gives us two
different creation accounts

on the same event,

but two different
accounts of creation.

Because there's no
way you could cover

creation one account.
00:05:13.41\00:05:14.74
Let me read what

the Sabbath
School quarterly says.

Genesis 1
recounts the creation week

and the growing
wonder of the earth
00:05:21.18\00:05:22.72
as it is given
form and then life,

culminating in
the creation of man
00:05:25.52\00:05:27.46
and woman on the sixth day.
00:05:27.49\00:05:29.39
So first, we learn
00:05:29.42\00:05:31.69
of the powerful
artistic creator,

who has an eye
for perfect beauty.

But then Genesis 2 it
says, looks at the same account,
00:05:38.27\00:05:41.40
but from a
different perspective,
00:05:41.44\00:05:43.37
with a special
focus on the sixth day.
00:05:43.41\00:05:47.24
Adam is at the
center of the picture.
00:05:47.28\00:05:48.74
Now, everything is
described as being there for him
00:05:48.78\00:05:53.21
and the woman, the garden,
00:05:53.25\00:05:54.98
the rivers, the
animals, and of course, woman.
00:05:55.02\00:05:58.95
So this second
account is showing us
00:05:58.99\00:06:03.76
that we're going to meet
the God of relationships,
00:06:03.79\00:06:07.20
and that He wants humanity
00:06:07.23\00:06:09.13
to love and care for each other,
00:06:09.16\00:06:11.77
and for the rest of creation.
00:06:11.80\00:06:13.87
But I want to add this point.
00:06:13.90\00:06:16.10
There is a dramatic punctuation
00:06:16.14\00:06:19.47
between the first
account and the second account.

Let's look at it.

Genesis 2:1-3,

we've just finished
the first account creation.

And Genesis 2 begins this way.

"Thus the heavens and the
earth and all the host of them

were finished.
00:06:34.36\00:06:36.19
And on the seventh day,
00:06:36.22\00:06:37.56
God ended His
work which He had done,
00:06:37.59\00:06:40.06
He rested on the
seventh day from all of His work
00:06:40.10\00:06:42.76
which He had done,
00:06:42.80\00:06:44.13
then God blessed the seventh day
00:06:44.17\00:06:47.07
and sanctified it,

because in it, He
rested from all His work

which God had created and made."

Now Hebrew for
rested is Shabbat,

and it means basically to
cease and desist from work.

And, you know, God didn't
rest because He was exhausted.

Isaiah 40:28 says,
00:07:05.25\00:07:07.39
"The Lord, the creators
of the end of the earth,
00:07:07.42\00:07:10.26
neither faints nor grow weary."
00:07:10.29\00:07:12.39
So why did God rest?

He ceased from
the work of creation,

because the work was completed.

You know, that's how
I feel on the Sabbath
00:07:22.17\00:07:23.91
when I keep the
Sabbath, I am resting.

To me, Sabbath is never a work.
00:07:27.74\00:07:29.91
Sabbath is a rest
00:07:29.94\00:07:31.28
because I remember
00:07:31.31\00:07:32.81
that God's work of
salvation is completed,

that in Christ Jesus,
00:07:36.42\00:07:38.39
He is going to
not only justify me
00:07:38.42\00:07:42.89
by grace through faith,
00:07:42.92\00:07:44.33
but He's working in me
00:07:44.36\00:07:46.56
to sanctify me by
grace through faith.
00:07:46.59\00:07:49.26
But Jesus said,

"My father has
been working until now,

and I have been working."

So when we look at
this account of creation,

it says in Chapter 1,

and the evening and the
morning were the first day,

and the evening and the
morning were the second day,

and it goes all the way through,

till on the sixth
day, which was Friday,

He creates Adam and Eve,

the evening and the
morning were the sixth day.

So on that evening,

Saturday evening is
when the Sabbath began,

and God rested
00:08:22.53\00:08:26.03
to basically establish a pattern

for man's work cycle
when you think about it.

We have a yearly cycle,
that is a solar cycle, right?

We have a monthly
cycle, that is a lunar cycle.

But the only reason

that we have a
seven-day work cycle
00:08:45.55\00:08:48.42
is because this is
God's perfect pattern.

We work six, six on,
the seventh day is off.

So God blessed the seventh day.
00:08:56.20\00:08:59.07
And you know, this
is the only unit of time
00:08:59.10\00:09:01.20
in the creation
account that God blesses.

And then He sanctified that day.
00:09:04.14\00:09:06.17
That means He set it aside.
00:09:06.21\00:09:08.28
And He made it holy,
00:09:08.31\00:09:11.15
just meaning that He's set aside
00:09:11.18\00:09:12.61
for His purposes.
00:09:12.65\00:09:14.45
So I want to add, oh,
my God can sanctify a day.

And there's no other day.

Sunday is never
sanctified in the Bible.

Here's the bottom line.

God is a relational being.

He longs for you
to open your heart

and to let Him pour
His love into your heart.

He longs to be part
of your life experiences.

God, the ideal would
be that we are like Enoch

that we walk with God in
uninterrupted fellowship.

But you know what?

God knows the end
from the beginning.
00:09:49.48\00:09:51.49
And He knew that
man would get busy

and in his busyness
interrupt that fellowship.

So God set aside the seventh day

that we can come to Him,

forget about
all of our troubles,

build our trust in Him,

our faith in Him as our Creator,

and the one who recreates us

in the image of
Jesus as our Redeemer,

and our Deliverer and
the one who sanctifies us.
00:10:16.01\00:10:19.61
And the intimacy
of our relationship
00:10:19.65\00:10:22.45
is magnified when we spend time
00:10:22.48\00:10:24.55
in God's presence.

I love this day.

God is the one who teaches us
how to follow His path of life.

But now, just think about this.

Sabbath is a time of
uninterrupted fellowship.

When we can look
up from our work,
00:10:39.10\00:10:42.10
we can look at the
skies and marvel at the stars

and how God created
everything with such beauty.
00:10:46.11\00:10:49.14
We can smell the flowers,
00:10:49.18\00:10:51.55
walk through the
forest or the trees.
00:10:51.58\00:10:54.38
And then we also learn
how to accept responsibility

for the
interdependence of relationship
00:10:59.99\00:11:02.42
with family and church.

But now let's just think
about Adam and Eve for a moment.

Here they're
created on the sixth day,

and they are getting ready
to have their first full day

from Friday evening,
till Saturday evening,

that seventh-day,

their first full
day with their Creator,

their first full
day with their spouse,
00:11:23.68\00:11:25.78
can you imagine.

It was a day that
touched all of their senses.

Their eyes marveled

at all the
beautiful colors of the Lord.

They're looking at
the beautiful colors

of the different birds,

the beautiful
colors of the flowers.

And you know, for
me, because I like,

I like to dabble in painting.

When I look out on the green,
if I'm looking at the trees,

I see maybe 50 different
shades of green in the trees.

I love it.

So here, their
eyes are marveling

at the unique shapes
and sizes of everything.

They see the huge elephant,

and they see the
duck billed platypus.

And they knew God
had a sense of humor

if He created the platypus,

and the little
tiny hummingbirds,

and their noses are
crinkling with the light

as they smell the aroma of
the flowers and the fruits.

And when you think about it,

even smelling the lion's breath.

I'm sure the lion's
breath was like puppy's breath

at that time.

The lush grass,

how their senses,

they laid in the lush grass

the heat of the sun

as they're warming up from that.

they heard the
bleeding of the sheep,

And it was just a

Let me just share with
you very briefly my first day.

When God called me to
full time ministry, he said,

"Forget what you think,
you know, come sit at my feet,

and I will teach you."

He started me on a
study of the sanctuary.

And I found out
the Ten Commandments

were inside the ark,

and that book of the
law was on the outside.

I realized, wow.

Sabbath is the only
one that I am ignoring.

And you know, the first Sabbath,

I'll never forget, as
the Sabbath rolled in,

it was like, all
of my stress sweat out

because all of my life

I had been trying to
speak good enough for God

and save myself.

And finally I realized,

God said the Sabbath is a sign

that I'm the one
who sanctifies you.

faithful, we'll get that chance.

Again, I'm

What a garden it was.

But now we go to
Monday, "Time for Rediscovery."

the first and second stage.

We now look at the
Sabbath in a different light.

You know, sin really
took its course in the earth.

And as the progression of
the generations continued,

finally, the Lord called a
man by the name of Abraham,

and Genesis 26:5 says, Abraham,

because Abraham
kept my commandments,

my statutes and my laws.
00:15:17.01\00:15:19.01
Abraham was not an Israelite,

they were not in existence then,

there was no
such thing as a Jew.

He was from Chaldea or Chaldea,
whichever way you say it,
00:15:24.62\00:15:27.69
a province in Babylon,
00:15:27.72\00:15:29.76
but he saw God and
God made him faithful.

From him came generations,
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,

from Jacob came 12
sons, the children of Israel,

after Jacob overcame
in his night of wrestling

with the Lord.

And then the
nations began to grow,

they fell into bondage
because of disobedience.

And a famine arose,

and they ended up
Joseph went to Egypt.

And when the famine arose,

the family went to
Egypt for provision,

and they were there
a total of 400 years,

the generations 430 if you count

when Joseph was there,

but can now imagine 400 years,
generation after generation,

being born and
dying, being born and dying,

and something got
lost in the slavery,

The Bible calls the seventh
day the Sabbath before Sinai.

wasn't the first test.

They had lost track
of the Sabbath in Egypt.

because Aaron and Moses
restored a day of labor,

a day of rest for them
while they were in Egypt.

And it got Pharaoh angry.

And that's when he commanded

The second reason
for the Sabbath test

centuries later said,

in the wilderness.

The third one was
to remind the manna

that they receive was a reminder

of the coming Messiah.

there's many Christians

that have that issue,

Sabbath is a test.

that it's going to return

as the ultimate test.

How can God know
that you are on His side

that you are His chosen,

send the Sabbath test.

willing to obey God

Let's go to Jeremiah 17:19-27.

kings of Judah come in

want to pause there

and highlight the fact that the,

that's the whole purpose
of the fourth commandment

is that God is
granting us rest in Him

and He is commanding us
that not only should we rest,

but anyone within our
influence and control,

we should allow them to rest,

even all the way
down to our cattle.

That's right.

The Lord says it's a holy day,
00:28:10.25\00:28:11.59
we should
remember we should observe,
00:28:11.62\00:28:12.95
we should honor this
day as a day of communion,

a day of rest.

And so that's what
He means by this burden.

The children of Israel
were bringing in a burden

on the Sabbath,

because they were
bringing in all of their labors,

all of their
business transactions,

and they were
defiling the Sabbath.

So that's why He says here,

"And bear no
burden on the Sabbath day,

nor bring it in by
the gates of Jerusalem,
