The church should be a place

flooded with many examples

of those who love truth,

who love the Word of God
from all around the world

from different
races, who come together,

they assemble
themselves together

for the learning and the growing

and the knowledge of God's Word.

And so we're going to
continue on that note,

this from the lesson.

Sometimes we are
afraid of asking questions.

However, in the Bible,
we often find that questions

are used to bring people

to a clearer
understanding of God.

In a similar manner,

stories are used
throughout the Bible

to create
opportunities for people

to rethink their commitments.

And, of course,
it goes on to say,

"Jesus was particularly focused
on this type of education

with His
disciples and followers."

As we see many
parables and many stories

that were used from
Jesus to teach a moral lesson.

And then it goes on to
say, "If the church is..."

And this is a good point.

"If the church is to
be a place of education,
00:06:47.04\00:06:49.94
it must provide the space
for genuine dialogue to occur,"

which is what we were
talking about earlier.

Just as we were repeatedly
told as students in school,

there is no dumb question.

We must provide within
the church a safe environment

for each person to grow in grace

and understanding of God
and His plan for their lives.

I like that, a safe environment.

And that's kind of the bulk

of what we're going
to be talking about today

as we get ready
for Sunday's lesson.

There was a cute little
story that was told here

about a rabbi who
asked his students,

he says, "When does one
know when the night is ended

and the day has begun?

When I first read that,
I thought, well, I guess

when the sun goes down, right?

But it's a spiritual question.

Of course, as students
begin to raise their hands

and give their
responses, one said, "Oh, Rabbi,
00:07:34.45\00:07:36.99
one knows that, you
know, when night has ended,
00:07:37.02\00:07:40.12
and the day has begun,
00:07:40.16\00:07:41.49
of course, when you
can tell the difference
00:07:41.52\00:07:42.86
between a fig tree
and an olive tree."

Another raised his hand
and said, "Rabbi, no, no,

it's when you can know
00:07:46.66\00:07:48.00
the difference between
the sheep and the goats."

But I like his answer.

He said, he said, "No one
knows the night has ended,

for our scriptural texts

this story, this parable.

Of course, it's the
parable of the Good Samaritan.

And I love this parable
because it always reminds us

of the compassion and the
love and the mercy of Jesus.

I'm going to start in verse 30.
00:08:45.92\00:08:47.29
Again, we're in Luke10:30-37.
00:08:47.32\00:08:50.66
Notice what the Bible says.

It says, "Then
Jesus answered and said:

'A certain man went down
from Jerusalem to Jericho,
00:08:55.23\00:08:58.40
and fell among thieves,
00:08:58.43\00:09:01.00
who stripped
him of his clothing,
00:09:01.04\00:09:02.60
wounded him, and
departed, leaving him half dead.
00:09:02.64\00:09:08.11
Now by chance a certain
priest came down that road.
00:09:08.14\00:09:11.35
And when he saw him, he
passed by on the other side.

Likewise a Levite,
when he had arrived

at that place,

came and looked, and
passed on the other side.

Of course, this whole parable
is in response to a question,

Jesus is talking
about loving your neighbor,

and they said,
who's our neighbor?

So He says, which of these,
00:10:05.97\00:10:08.97
they fell among
thieves is the neighbor.
00:10:09.00\00:10:12.07
And, of course, verse 37.
00:10:12.11\00:10:13.64
"He said, 'He who
showed mercy on him.'
00:10:13.68\00:10:18.31
Then Jesus said to
him, 'Go and do likewise.'"
00:10:18.35\00:10:22.58
There's much we can
learn from these stories.
00:10:22.62\00:10:24.99
Most people know
them as parables,
00:10:25.02\00:10:26.99
stories, but you know, I
find that many Christians
00:10:27.02\00:10:29.39
will read those
type of parables,
00:10:29.42\00:10:30.89
and they'll learn nothing.
00:10:30.93\00:10:32.43
Because even
though we live in a world
00:10:32.46\00:10:35.66
where you would think
we've learned we've grown,
00:10:35.70\00:10:38.33
we've had the
Bible, the Word of God
00:10:38.37\00:10:40.74
for a couple of
thousand years now,
00:10:40.77\00:10:42.90
or at least a few hundred years.
00:10:42.94\00:10:45.21
You know, it's
interesting that many people
00:10:45.24\00:10:46.81
can still read these lessons,
read these beautiful parables,
00:10:46.84\00:10:50.45
and still not glean
the truth that God wants us
00:10:50.48\00:10:53.08
to learn from them.
00:10:53.11\00:10:54.45
You see as
Seventh-day Adventist,
00:10:54.48\00:10:56.45
we have been blessed
00:10:56.48\00:10:57.82
with an abundance
of doctrinal light.
00:10:57.85\00:11:00.09
And we have all of
these precious truths,
00:11:00.12\00:11:02.09
you know, I can
go down the list,
00:11:02.12\00:11:03.46
you know, the state of the dead,
00:11:03.49\00:11:04.83
and the beautiful
message of God's law
00:11:04.86\00:11:06.76
and the Sabbath and, you
know, the sanctuary message,
00:11:06.80\00:11:10.07
the Great Controversy message
00:11:10.10\00:11:11.50
and go through all
the wonderful truth,
00:11:11.53\00:11:13.60
powerful truths.
00:11:13.64\00:11:15.57
But if we cannot
learn to love our neighbor
00:11:15.60\00:11:18.37
and be kind to one
another, none of that matters.
00:11:18.41\00:11:21.31
And I run into a
lot of Christians today,
00:11:21.34\00:11:23.31
my friends, and
it breaks my heart,
00:11:23.35\00:11:25.08
that they've got
all the head knowledge,
00:11:25.11\00:11:27.22
they've got all
the truths tucked away,
00:11:27.25\00:11:28.92
they can give you
the greatest Bible study
00:11:28.95\00:11:30.35
in the world.
00:11:30.39\00:11:31.72
But you watch some
of these same people
00:11:31.75\00:11:33.32
walk into the church,
00:11:33.36\00:11:34.69
and you see them treat
their brother, their sister,
00:11:34.72\00:11:36.42
a wrong way based on
maybe the color of their skin,
00:11:36.46\00:11:38.89
where they're from,
some type of social class,
00:11:38.93\00:11:42.20
or whatever it may be,
00:11:42.23\00:11:43.67
we see this happening
00:11:43.70\00:11:45.03
and we have to be
careful, my friends.

You know, this lesson
really spoke to my heart,

as I believe that should
speak to every one of us,

especially with
what has transpired
00:11:51.51\00:11:53.34
in our country over
the last few months.

While our church
is the most diverse

than any other, and
that's an amazing thing.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church
00:12:01.48\00:12:02.82
is a very diverse church.
00:12:02.85\00:12:04.19
I was amazed when I came in
of all of the wonderful people
00:12:04.22\00:12:07.19
from all different
nations all over the world.

But you know, sometimes I
think we missed the point,

we still don't get it.
00:12:11.63\00:12:12.96
You expect the world
00:12:12.99\00:12:14.33
and the carnal
minded people of the world
00:12:14.36\00:12:15.73
to act and speak in such
a way that causes division
00:12:15.76\00:12:18.83
and promotes
prejudices and racisms.
00:12:18.87\00:12:20.84
But, you know, when you
see professed Christians
00:12:20.87\00:12:23.27
acting like this, and,
00:12:23.30\00:12:24.64
you know, posting
public remarks and messages
00:12:24.67\00:12:26.88
that promotes these evils.
00:12:26.91\00:12:28.41
You know, we're living
in a strange and sad time,
00:12:28.44\00:12:30.71
you know, my
heart breaks for this
00:12:30.75\00:12:32.61
because I see people
on my own social media,
00:12:32.65\00:12:35.55
Christian, sometimes
members of my own church,
00:12:35.58\00:12:38.22
posting things
that I'm just sad about,
00:12:38.25\00:12:40.76
because it shows that
we have a lot to learn,
00:12:40.79\00:12:42.96
it shows that we need
to get back to the Bible,
00:12:42.99\00:12:45.13
and we need to be educated
on the church and education.
00:12:45.16\00:12:49.23
As I said before, the
church is a place of education,
00:12:49.26\00:12:51.93
and all people from
all races, all nations,
00:12:51.97\00:12:54.60
all different backgrounds
should be able to come together
00:12:54.64\00:12:56.94
and learn
harmoniously, in God's Word,
00:12:56.97\00:13:01.01
you know, it brings my
mind back to Daniel Chapter 11,
00:13:01.04\00:13:05.35
which is a very
complex prophetic chapter.
00:13:05.38\00:13:07.15
But there's one thing I
can get from that chapter.

But there's one thing for sure,

the devil is working both sides.

And that's exactly where
the devil wants us as a church,

he wants us divided.

He wants the spirit of
the north and the south

to infiltrate
our hearts and minds

and filtrate the church
so that we become so divided

that when we see our friend,
00:13:32.81\00:13:34.21
when we see our neighbor,
when we see our loved ones
00:13:34.24\00:13:36.68
that need help,
that need to learn,

that need to be
educated, that need Jesus

as much as we do.

Sometimes we just pass by
or sometimes we treat them

in such a way that that spirit
of the North and the South

shows up in us and my friends,

we need Jesus
more than ever today.

We need to be praying, we
need to be a praying church,

because God does have a people.

He has a whole weak church
that He's coming back for.

None of that

Jesus is coming back
for people that are ready,

And some of us
need to be re-educated

in the School of Christ.

Some of us need to get
back to the Word of God

in these last days.

We need to get back to
the Word of God and submit

to what the Word of God says.

in the last few seconds I have.

We need to be
praying for each other.

because the church is
going to play a vital role

in these last days
to educate the world

in God's ways and God's truth.

We are called to take
three angels' messages

to this entire world
to all peoples, languages

and nations all
across this world.

They're all our neighbors.

They're all our
brothers and sisters in Christ.

That's the teaching of Jesus.

May we submit to it.

Light is a common
theme in the Bible.

What is the purpose
that the light serves?

It gives us guidance and
direction by what we see.

Now, when the Bible
uses the word darkness,

there's two ways
in which it uses.
00:15:21.68\00:15:23.79
It can be a
literal, physical darkness,
00:15:23.82\00:15:26.76
talking about like
the darkness of night,
00:15:26.79\00:15:29.16
or it can be a
figurative symbolic use,
00:15:29.19\00:15:34.10
where it's talking
about error and falsehood,
00:15:34.13\00:15:36.97
walking in a way
that is not God's way,
00:15:37.00\00:15:40.10
walking in evil deeds, sin.
00:15:40.14\00:15:44.07
And when we think
about Ephesians 6:12,
00:15:44.11\00:15:47.31
he talks about the rulers
00:15:47.34\00:15:49.78
of the powers of the
darkness of this age.
00:15:49.81\00:15:54.45
So we know that darkness
is the absence of light,
00:15:54.48\00:16:00.06
but light dispels darkness.
00:16:00.09\00:16:02.82
And when the Bible
uses the word light,
00:16:02.86\00:16:05.56
it uses it in two ways as well,
00:16:05.59\00:16:08.03
literal and
physical like the luminaries,
00:16:08.06\00:16:10.33
the sun, the moon,
the stars, or a lamp.
00:16:10.37\00:16:13.30
But it also uses it
in a figurative sense
00:16:13.34\00:16:16.84
to talk about,
light is the holiness,
00:16:16.87\00:16:20.01
the purity of God.
00:16:20.04\00:16:22.18
And that it is
something interesting is that

when we get delivered
from demonic influence.

The Bible talks
about God shining His light
00:16:30.69\00:16:34.02
into the darkness.
00:16:34.06\00:16:36.19
In 1 John 1:5, we're
not going to turn there to.
00:16:36.22\00:16:39.43
I'm just going to
give you a few scriptures
00:16:39.46\00:16:41.06
till we get to the
opening of the lesson.
00:16:41.10\00:16:43.43
But 1 John 1:5
says that God is light,
00:16:43.47\00:16:47.10
and in Him there
is no darkness at all.
00:16:47.14\00:16:51.11
In fact, in 1 Timothy 6:16,
00:16:51.14\00:16:55.11
Paul describes to
Timothy that God lives
00:16:55.14\00:16:59.95
in an unapproachable light.
00:16:59.98\00:17:03.65
He alone has immortality.
00:17:03.69\00:17:05.92
He lives in this
unapproachable light.
00:17:05.95\00:17:09.59
So, you know, it's amazing
to me that God as a Spirit,
00:17:09.62\00:17:13.93
no one has ever seen
His full illumination.
00:17:13.96\00:17:17.47
Nobody can see
the fullness of God
00:17:17.50\00:17:21.27
in His physical or
in His spiritual form.
00:17:21.30\00:17:25.14
But what did He do?
00:17:25.17\00:17:26.61
God took on our flesh.
00:17:26.64\00:17:29.44
He veiled His
divinity with flesh.
00:17:29.48\00:17:32.81
He came to us and
we've used this so much,

John 1:1, "In the
beginning was the Word,

the Word was with
God, the Word was God,
00:17:37.85\00:17:40.56
and all things
were made through Him."

But what we
haven't used is 1 John 4,

I mean, John 1
says, "In Him was life,

and the life was
the light of man."

That's why Jesus
said in John 8:12,
00:17:57.64\00:18:00.84
"I am the light of the world
00:18:00.88\00:18:03.08
and He who follows after
me, will never walk in darkness.
00:18:03.11\00:18:08.78
You won't walk in a path of sin,
00:18:08.82\00:18:13.36
when you're
following our Lord Jesus.

And this is where we
now turn to our lesson.

It points out that we're
living in a current landscape,

what you said,
there's moral bankruptcy,

there's darkness all around us.

And it's kind of frightening,

but in the midst of all
this internal and external noise

that's going on in our heads,

here's what we hear.

He's talking to me,

It's not just His disciples.

or do they light a lamp
and put it under a basket,

lampstand, and it gives light

to all who are in the house.

Let your light

that they may

You know, the Bible clearly

from one level

His character to another.

We receive light from Him.

We don't have any
inherent light of our own.

We reflect Jesus' love,

we reflect Jesus' life.
00:19:55.46\00:19:57.99
We reflect His light.

It's just like the moon
reflects the light of the sun,

the solar sun, we reflect

the light of the
Son of righteousness.

And so how we
live really influences

how other people see God.

If we do not speak up
when something is wrong,

We have to have a convincing,

The light of the world is
an allusion to the prophecy

about the difference today,

a disciple real quickly here.

Discipleship in
the Christian sense

is the process of making someone

become more like Christ.

The disciple of
Christ is to become

like Christ in everything.

That's a tall order.

But the good news is
it is God who works in us,

both to will and to
do of His good pleasure.

But I don't want to make it
sound like we're an automaton

and we're not
involved in the process.

We have to
submit to that process.

We have to be clay in
the hand of the potter

that doesn't want to jump
out of the hand of the potter.

And many people look at
that process of discipleship

in the wrong light.

Sometimes they
think it's something

I have to give up.

No, if I had, I saw a picture,

maybe some of
you have seen this,

an adult with a large
teddy bear behind his back,
00:27:09.16\00:27:13.70
and a little boy
with a small teddy bear
00:27:13.73\00:27:16.46
and the adult saying,
"Give me the teddy bear."
00:27:16.50\00:27:19.13
And the kid's saying, "No."
00:27:19.17\00:27:20.67
He had no idea
what's behind the back.
00:27:20.70\00:27:23.00
If he had given up
that little teddy bear
00:27:23.04\00:27:24.71
he would have got one
about the same size as he was.
00:27:24.74\00:27:27.18
So often we look
at Jesus the same way
00:27:27.21\00:27:30.01
that He is wanting
us to give up something
00:27:30.05\00:27:32.11
that we have become attached to
00:27:32.15\00:27:33.95
when in fact He said
to the rich young ruler,
00:27:33.98\00:27:36.22
if he had done what I asked him,
00:27:36.25\00:27:38.89
Peter hearing the exchange says,
00:27:38.92\00:27:40.56
Lord who then can be saved.
00:27:40.59\00:27:42.92
Then Jesus said
something that I cannot forget.

If he had done that,
00:27:45.99\00:27:47.43
I would have given him
100 times more in this life,

and fathers and
mothers and houses and land
00:27:52.07\00:27:54.24
with tribulation.

But the point of the
matter as the Lord said,

"He had so little, but
I was willing to give him

100 times more in this life,

in the world to
come eternal life."

And so, when it
comes to discipleship,

never think of it as giving up.

But think of it as
standing in line to get yours.

And when Jesus gives you
what He has in store for you,

it should not be
because we want to receive

some selfish gift.
00:28:19.46\00:28:20.80
It should be because
00:28:20.83\00:28:22.16
we want to become just like Him.

The primary purpose of
Jesus' coming to the world

was to establish
the kingdom of God
00:28:27.04\00:28:29.47
through His death.
00:28:29.50\00:28:30.84
And that death brought
life in the resurrection,
00:28:30.87\00:28:34.44
with the power to
become a disciple.
00:28:34.48\00:28:37.05
Now, let's look at
a couple of examples.
00:28:37.08\00:28:39.01
You pointed out Matthew 5:14,
00:28:39.05\00:28:41.82
"You are the light of the world.
00:28:41.85\00:28:43.18
A city that is set on
a hill cannot be hidden."
00:28:43.22\00:28:45.99
Well, you know,
there is no such thing,
00:28:46.02\00:28:47.82
Danny, or our panel
as a secret disciple.
00:28:47.86\00:28:51.46
That's right.
00:28:51.49\00:28:52.86
Either your discipleship
will destroy your secrecy,
00:28:52.89\00:28:55.93
or your secrecy will
destroy your discipleship.

There is no such
thing as a secret disciple.

And I'm just one of those guys.

somebody yesterday who heard

someone in the hospital.

Well, you know, if you
say, hey, share with me

what you believe
that's all I need.

And, but I do it
in Christ's name.

But the Lord will
always guide His disciples.

So the first thing
Matthew 8:23, to be a disciple,

you must be
willing to follow Jesus.

He is the best guide.

Now some churches might
have spiritual connection,
