I like that. 00:01:58.88\00:02:00.92 I love that. 00:02:00.95\00:02:02.28 And I just have to apologize to you at home. 00:02:02.32\00:02:04.42 If I squeak I noticed sometimes when I go up, 00:02:04.45\00:02:07.72 I got a little vocal fold damage. 00:02:07.76\00:02:09.66 But let's jump right into our lesson. 00:02:09.69\00:02:14.10 We know that our Lord God is a covenant-making, 00:02:14.13\00:02:19.50 covenant-keeping God of love. 00:02:19.53\00:02:23.57 And He reveals Himself to us. 00:02:23.61\00:02:26.51 I mean, His whole purpose in creating us 00:02:26.54\00:02:30.41 was that we could be 00:02:30.45\00:02:31.78 in a love relationship with Him. 00:02:31.81\00:02:33.95 And He wants to communicate with us. 00:02:33.98\00:02:37.05 So let's look at some of the ways 00:02:37.09\00:02:38.65 that God reveals Himself to us. 00:02:38.69\00:02:41.82 He reveals Himself to us through creation. 00:02:41.86\00:02:44.56 We look around, we see His intelligent design, 00:02:44.59\00:02:48.03 His creativity and His power. 00:02:48.06\00:02:50.63 He reveals Himself 00:02:50.67\00:02:52.17 through the conscience of humanity 00:02:52.20\00:02:54.74 because God by His Holy Spirit, He's always moving us, 00:02:54.77\00:03:00.88 showing us the right way. 00:03:00.91\00:03:03.35 He revealed Himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ, 00:03:03.38\00:03:09.68 who walked this earth 00:03:09.72\00:03:11.55 to show us exactly who the father was. 00:03:11.59\00:03:16.42 And He reveals Himself to us in Scripture. 00:03:16.46\00:03:20.83 But before we open up the Scriptures, 00:03:20.86\00:03:23.03 we need to have a prayer. 00:03:23.06\00:03:24.40 John, I'm gonna ask you to pray, please. 00:03:24.43\00:03:26.63 Gracious Father in heaven, 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.00 education is what we all receive 00:03:28.04\00:03:31.04 when we open our hearts to your Holy Spirit, 00:03:31.07\00:03:33.91 send that power today, Father, 00:03:33.94\00:03:35.61 to be the active agent 00:03:35.64\00:03:37.78 in what is said and what is done. 00:03:37.81\00:03:39.71 And may all the glory go to You. 00:03:39.75\00:03:41.08 We pray in Jesus' name. 00:03:41.12\00:03:43.12 Amen. Amen and amen. 00:03:43.15\00:03:45.15 So we open this lesson 00:03:45.19\00:03:47.32 with the memory text from 2 Timothy 3:16. 00:03:47.36\00:03:51.36 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God. 00:03:51.39\00:03:55.66 And what is it profitable for? 00:03:55.70\00:03:57.83 For doctrine, reproof, correction, 00:03:57.87\00:04:02.07 and instruction in righteousness. 00:04:02.10\00:04:05.37 When it's talking about all Scripture here, 00:04:05.41\00:04:07.58 at the time this was written, 00:04:07.61\00:04:08.98 it's referring to the Old Testament. 00:04:09.01\00:04:10.98 You know, I grew up as a New Testament Christian 00:04:11.01\00:04:13.15 and I was taught that the Old Testament, 00:04:13.18\00:04:15.52 forget about it. 00:04:15.55\00:04:16.89 I'm going to tell you something. 00:04:16.92\00:04:18.25 The New Testament is contained in the Old 00:04:18.29\00:04:23.26 and the Old is explained in the New. 00:04:23.29\00:04:25.16 If you don't study from Genesis to Revelation, 00:04:25.19\00:04:27.96 you can't understand 00:04:28.00\00:04:30.30 what God is trying to tell His people. 00:04:30.33\00:04:33.40 He is... 00:04:33.44\00:04:35.27 God says, "I'm the Lord changed not." 00:04:35.30\00:04:37.84 He's the same yesterday, today, and forever. 00:04:37.87\00:04:40.98 So when we look at what this is good for, 00:04:41.01\00:04:45.28 for doctrine. 00:04:45.31\00:04:46.65 What's doctrine? 00:04:46.68\00:04:48.02 Teaching. 00:04:48.05\00:04:49.38 And, you know, this is the instructions 00:04:49.42\00:04:52.32 for how to have an abundant life in God. 00:04:52.35\00:04:55.39 Sometimes people will say, 00:04:55.42\00:04:57.09 "Oh, don't talk to me about doctrine. 00:04:57.13\00:04:58.89 I don't want to hear that word doctrine." 00:04:58.93\00:05:00.93 And I think, "Are you kidding?" 00:05:00.96\00:05:02.76 Doctrine is God's truth encapsulated. 00:05:02.80\00:05:06.23 I love it. 00:05:06.27\00:05:07.60 It is good for reproof, 00:05:07.64\00:05:09.40 that is when we are shown the error of our way. 00:05:09.44\00:05:15.51 And then God brings us to repentance, 00:05:15.54\00:05:18.65 confession and repentance. 00:05:18.68\00:05:20.72 It is used for correction. 00:05:20.75\00:05:22.55 Hey, that word correction, 00:05:22.58\00:05:23.99 this is the only time 00:05:24.02\00:05:25.35 it's used in the Old Testament... 00:05:25.39\00:05:26.72 I mean in the New Testament. 00:05:26.76\00:05:28.29 And it means to restore someone, 00:05:28.32\00:05:31.43 it's like if someone has fallen from their feet, 00:05:31.46\00:05:34.26 it's to help them back up 00:05:34.30\00:05:36.43 from the ground and to restore them. 00:05:36.46\00:05:39.63 And instruction in righteousness. 00:05:39.67\00:05:43.30 You know, people ask me sometimes, 00:05:43.34\00:05:45.44 "Do you believe in righteousness by faith?" 00:05:45.47\00:05:46.84 I believe 00:05:46.88\00:05:48.21 that's the only kind of righteousness 00:05:48.24\00:05:49.58 there is. 00:05:49.61\00:05:50.95 But we know that John tells us in 1 John, 00:05:50.98\00:05:53.68 that the righteous will practice righteousness. 00:05:53.72\00:05:58.05 So we are learning 00:05:58.09\00:05:59.75 how to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. 00:05:59.79\00:06:03.79 So God reveals himself to mankind 00:06:03.83\00:06:08.43 in a father-child relationship, 00:06:08.46\00:06:11.60 a teacher-student relationship and He invites us, 00:06:11.63\00:06:17.64 "I want you to come to Me, I want you to learn Me. 00:06:17.67\00:06:22.31 I want you to know who I am and how much I love you. 00:06:22.34\00:06:25.71 And I want you to know your identity as My child." 00:06:25.75\00:06:32.25 How precious. Did you know God... 00:06:32.29\00:06:34.99 Just think about it. 00:06:35.02\00:06:36.36 He walked in the Garden of Eden teaching, 00:06:36.39\00:06:40.76 He walked on the face of the earth 00:06:40.80\00:06:42.96 in the person of Jesus Christ teaching, 00:06:43.00\00:06:45.53 He's going to be teaching us throughout all eternity. 00:06:45.57\00:06:48.90 We're just going to be marveling 00:06:48.94\00:06:51.04 at the things that we learn. 00:06:51.07\00:06:52.61 So let's look at Sunday. 00:06:52.64\00:06:55.68 We're going to open our Bibles to Genesis 1:26 00:06:55.71\00:07:01.78 is where we will begin. 00:07:01.82\00:07:03.85 And there's something interesting. 00:07:03.89\00:07:06.09 Genesis 1: 26. 00:07:06.12\00:07:08.76 Sunday's title is In the image of God. 00:07:08.79\00:07:12.03 Well, what does that mean? 00:07:12.06\00:07:14.23 Genesis 1:26 says, "Then God," 00:07:14.26\00:07:17.70 Elohim, which is a plural name, 00:07:17.73\00:07:22.34 El was the name for God, Elohim is the plural of El. 00:07:22.37\00:07:27.61 Listen to how God expresses himself 00:07:27.64\00:07:31.41 in plural pronouns. 00:07:31.45\00:07:33.18 He said, "Let Us make man in Our image, 00:07:33.21\00:07:37.09 according to Our likeness, 00:07:37.12\00:07:39.19 let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, 00:07:39.22\00:07:41.39 over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, 00:07:41.42\00:07:43.32 over all the earth, 00:07:43.36\00:07:44.69 over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." 00:07:44.73\00:07:48.86 So who is the earth? 00:07:48.90\00:07:51.10 It's not the angels 00:07:51.13\00:07:53.34 'cause he's getting ready to say right here in verse 27. 00:07:53.37\00:07:56.10 "So God created man in His own image," 00:07:56.14\00:08:01.31 that's the us, 00:08:01.34\00:08:02.68 "in the image of God He created him, 00:08:02.71\00:08:04.81 male and female He created them. 00:08:04.85\00:08:07.72 And He blessed them and He said to them, 00:08:07.75\00:08:10.59 'Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, 00:08:10.62\00:08:14.26 have dominion over the fish of the sea, 00:08:14.29\00:08:16.29 over the birds of the air, 00:08:16.32\00:08:17.96 and over everything 00:08:17.99\00:08:19.93 that moves on the face of the earth.'" 00:08:19.96\00:08:23.47 Now I know that there's a lot of conversations 00:08:23.50\00:08:28.14 on what does it mean 00:08:28.17\00:08:29.50 to be created in the image of God? 00:08:29.54\00:08:31.64 Right. 00:08:31.67\00:08:33.01 We know that Jesus said in John 4:24 00:08:33.04\00:08:35.08 that God is spirit. 00:08:35.11\00:08:37.01 So does He have a form like us? 00:08:37.05\00:08:38.91 I mean, is He shaped like a man? 00:08:38.95\00:08:40.78 I don't know. The Bible doesn't tell me. 00:08:40.82\00:08:43.32 But what I do know is that image and likeness 00:08:43.35\00:08:48.42 that God created us 00:08:48.46\00:08:50.73 with moral sensibilities with He created us perfect. 00:08:50.76\00:08:55.46 He created us to be like Him with intellectual abilities. 00:08:55.50\00:09:01.87 We have a will, we have emotions, 00:09:01.90\00:09:05.07 He created us with the capacity to govern His creation, 00:09:05.11\00:09:10.11 His earth. 00:09:10.15\00:09:11.48 So it's interesting to me 00:09:11.51\00:09:14.58 that there is a law of reproduction 00:09:14.62\00:09:18.62 in God's creation. 00:09:18.65\00:09:19.99 He created male and female, and they had to be able, 00:09:20.02\00:09:25.83 by divine design, they had to come together, 00:09:25.86\00:09:28.86 to reproduce, 00:09:28.90\00:09:30.27 to fulfill what He said, to multiply. 00:09:30.30\00:09:34.90 So God has a purpose. 00:09:34.94\00:09:36.81 But here's what I want to share with you 00:09:36.84\00:09:38.74 'cause this is a thought God gave me, 00:09:38.77\00:09:40.28 some time ago, that I just love. 00:09:40.31\00:09:44.88 The Bible tells us in 1 John 4:8-16, 00:09:44.91\00:09:48.58 "God is love." 00:09:48.62\00:09:50.79 That is the very essence of God's character. 00:09:50.82\00:09:55.02 And all of His attributes, everything about Him has to... 00:09:55.06\00:10:00.63 I mean, that's the essence of His being, 00:10:00.66\00:10:02.50 all of His character has to line up with that love. 00:10:02.53\00:10:07.30 And it is another-centered love. 00:10:07.34\00:10:10.74 In other words, 00:10:10.77\00:10:12.11 it's an outpouring of self-sacrificing love. 00:10:12.14\00:10:16.14 You know, if we were created in God's image, 00:10:16.18\00:10:20.88 He is a relational being of love. 00:10:20.92\00:10:24.29 He created us to be beings of love. 00:10:24.32\00:10:29.96 And think about how wonderful that is 00:10:29.99\00:10:33.66 that He created us to have a relationship with Him. 00:10:33.70\00:10:37.67 He created us to love others and serve others. 00:10:37.70\00:10:42.57 And to me, 00:10:42.60\00:10:44.37 if we're going to live in right relationship, 00:10:44.41\00:10:47.24 we need to open up our hearts. 00:10:47.28\00:10:49.54 The Bible says in Romans 5:5, 00:10:49.58\00:10:51.91 God pours his love into our heart 00:10:51.95\00:10:54.58 by the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:54.62\00:10:56.62 The only way that we can love the Lord our God 00:10:56.65\00:10:59.05 with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, 00:10:59.09\00:11:01.62 and love our neighbor as ourself, 00:11:01.66\00:11:03.32 which are the most important commandments, 00:11:03.36\00:11:06.76 is to open up our heart 00:11:06.80\00:11:08.20 and let God pour His Holy Spirit, 00:11:08.23\00:11:11.07 His love, His essence into us. 00:11:11.10\00:11:15.04 Now let's look at Genesis 5 00:11:15.07\00:11:17.84 'cause we're going to see 00:11:17.87\00:11:20.18 that there is after the fall of mankind, 00:11:20.21\00:11:25.65 the image of God is marred in man. 00:11:25.68\00:11:29.98 In Genesis 5:1, let's see, 00:11:30.02\00:11:32.49 God created man and made them in the likeness of God, 00:11:32.52\00:11:36.02 He created male and female and blessed them. 00:11:36.06\00:11:38.59 Now jump down to verse 3, "And Adam lived one 130 years, 00:11:38.63\00:11:42.60 and begot a son in his own likeness, 00:11:42.63\00:11:47.64 after his image, and named this son Seth." 00:11:47.67\00:11:53.34 Now I believe that the second generation, 00:11:53.38\00:11:56.98 obviously, 00:11:57.01\00:11:58.71 procreation that the image of God 00:11:58.75\00:12:00.78 was passed onto man. 00:12:00.82\00:12:02.85 But what happened? 00:12:02.88\00:12:04.39 The image was marred because of the fall, 00:12:04.42\00:12:07.86 that fallen nature got passed on to us. 00:12:07.89\00:12:11.76 And that's why we needed 00:12:11.79\00:12:14.76 a new Adam, the last Adam, 00:12:14.80\00:12:19.63 when God became a man 00:12:19.67\00:12:22.90 so that we could be born again in His image. 00:12:22.94\00:12:29.71 I love what the Bible tells us, 00:12:29.74\00:12:33.01 Romans 8:28, 29, 00:12:33.05\00:12:35.35 and we can never separate those two scriptures, 00:12:35.38\00:12:37.79 Romans 8:28, 29 says, 00:12:37.82\00:12:40.32 that all things work together for good 00:12:40.36\00:12:42.82 for those who love the Lord 00:12:42.86\00:12:44.19 and are called according to His purpose. 00:12:44.23\00:12:47.10 That's your purpose. 00:12:47.13\00:12:48.60 But your destiny is right there in the next scripture 00:12:48.63\00:12:52.00 because those that God for knew He predestined 00:12:52.03\00:12:55.10 to be conformed to the image of His Son, 00:12:55.14\00:12:57.17 Jesus Christ. 00:12:57.21\00:12:58.54 That's your destiny. 00:12:58.57\00:12:59.91 Let me read to you very quickly. 00:12:59.94\00:13:01.88 1 Thessalonians. 00:13:01.91\00:13:03.24 And I want to get to verse 3 00:13:03.28\00:13:07.82 or chapter 3 at 1 Thessalonians 00:13:07.85\00:13:11.85 because, you know, some people are going to say, 00:13:11.89\00:13:14.02 "What do you mean 00:13:14.06\00:13:15.39 God created us in the image of love? 00:13:15.42\00:13:17.43 If He created us in His image, and He is love, then, brethren, 00:13:17.46\00:13:24.07 this is where it's all at." 00:13:24.10\00:13:26.17 Let's look 00:13:26.20\00:13:27.54 at 1 Thessalonians 3:12. 00:13:27.57\00:13:34.28 And it says, "May the Lord make you increase and abound, " 00:13:34.31\00:13:41.05 who's doing the work? 00:13:41.08\00:13:42.42 The Lord. The Lord is doing the work. 00:13:42.45\00:13:45.05 Increase and abound in what? Love. 00:13:45.09\00:13:47.56 In love to one another and to all 00:13:47.59\00:13:50.93 just as we do to you so that and any time you see, 00:13:50.96\00:13:55.43 so are that or so that, that's the purpose statement. 00:13:55.46\00:13:59.90 So Paul's saying, 00:13:59.93\00:14:01.47 hey, make God 00:14:01.50\00:14:03.47 cause you to increase and abound in love 00:14:03.51\00:14:05.44 for this purpose. 00:14:05.47\00:14:06.81 Here it is, 00:14:06.84\00:14:08.18 "So that he may establish 00:14:08.21\00:14:10.98 your hearts blameless in holiness, 00:14:11.01\00:14:14.82 before our God and Father 00:14:14.85\00:14:16.18 the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ 00:14:16.22\00:14:18.25 with all of His saints." 00:14:18.29\00:14:19.92 Do you realize what he's saying there? 00:14:19.95\00:14:22.59 He is saying that as we grow in love, 00:14:22.62\00:14:28.06 we grow in holiness. 00:14:28.10\00:14:30.63 That is a beautiful thing 00:14:30.67\00:14:32.67 because we grow in the image of God. 00:14:32.70\00:14:35.97 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:14:36.00\00:14:38.41 Well, I know you can consume the rest of the time. 00:14:38.44\00:14:41.04 I could. 00:14:41.08\00:14:42.74 Praise the Lord. 00:14:42.78\00:14:44.11 Well, Monday's lesson brings us to Jesus as Teacher. 00:14:44.15\00:14:48.68 And so now we want to encourage you 00:14:48.72\00:14:51.22 to follow along 00:14:51.25\00:14:53.66 because Jesus, 00:14:53.69\00:14:55.62 there are many names by which He is addressed 00:14:55.66\00:14:57.66 in the Bible, 00:14:57.69\00:14:59.03 including, one of my favorites is the Lamb of God 00:14:59.06\00:15:02.80 that takes away the sin of the world. 00:15:02.83\00:15:05.33 But He's also called Master, Rabbi. 00:15:05.37\00:15:08.97 And these words actually mean teacher. 00:15:09.00\00:15:12.24 And see, when you look at Jesus as your teacher, 00:15:12.27\00:15:15.58 you're going to do well. 00:15:15.61\00:15:16.95 Amen. 00:15:16.98\00:15:18.31 Let's go into the book Isaiah Chapter 11. 00:15:18.35\00:15:23.28 In Isaiah Chapter 11, 00:15:23.32\00:15:25.95 the study is for verses 1 through 9, 00:15:25.99\00:15:29.12 but we're going to focus on verses 1, 2, and 3. 00:15:29.16\00:15:33.60 "There shall come forth a rod from the stem of Jesse, 00:15:33.63\00:15:37.73 and a Branch shall grow out of his roots." 00:15:37.77\00:15:40.74 This is another name for Jesus, the branch, 00:15:40.77\00:15:42.94 "The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, 00:15:42.97\00:15:46.01 the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, 00:15:46.04\00:15:48.81 the Spirit of counsel and might, 00:15:48.84\00:15:50.78 the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. 00:15:50.81\00:15:54.02 His delight is in the fear of the Lord, 00:15:54.05\00:15:57.89 And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, 00:15:57.92\00:16:00.49 nor decide by the hearing of His ears." 00:16:00.52\00:16:03.59 These are words that speak of a teacher, 00:16:03.63\00:16:07.83 and He has the spirit of wisdom and understanding. 00:16:07.86\00:16:11.50 And when we talk of 00:16:11.53\00:16:13.57 when we consider Jesus as a teacher, 00:16:13.60\00:16:16.74 then we can pause and consider 00:16:16.77\00:16:20.51 that the words He spoke, 00:16:20.54\00:16:24.91 we need to listen to them. 00:16:24.95\00:16:26.48 Now there was a time 00:16:26.51\00:16:27.85 when Jesus was teaching the people. 00:16:27.88\00:16:30.29 And He was saying some things 00:16:30.32\00:16:32.12 that the Bible says that somebody said, 00:16:32.15\00:16:34.26 "These are things that are hard to hear." 00:16:34.29\00:16:37.36 And so some people started leaving, 00:16:37.39\00:16:40.30 some people started leaving. 00:16:40.33\00:16:41.66 And so Jesus apparently was getting sadder and sadder 00:16:41.70\00:16:45.27 because I see Him getting sadder and sadder 00:16:45.30\00:16:47.04 because He looks to His 12 disciples, 00:16:47.07\00:16:49.64 and he says, "Will you also leave?" 00:16:49.67\00:16:52.97 And Peter said the right thing. 00:16:53.01\00:16:55.14 He says, "Lord, where can we go? 00:16:55.18\00:16:56.64 You have the words of life." 00:16:56.68\00:16:59.31 And so I want to tell you 00:16:59.35\00:17:00.68 that Jesus has the words of life today. 00:17:00.72\00:17:03.35 Now when you go to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, 00:17:03.39\00:17:06.72 and even into the book of Revelation, 00:17:06.76\00:17:08.82 you can see 00:17:08.86\00:17:10.19 that these are the words of Jesus. 00:17:10.23\00:17:11.99 And if they were Spirit, if they were life, 00:17:12.03\00:17:14.40 then they are like today. 00:17:14.43\00:17:16.03 And they are worthy of our study. 00:17:16.06\00:17:18.57 So when you go through Matthew, 00:17:18.60\00:17:20.24 Mark, Luke, and John, 00:17:20.27\00:17:21.90 don't dispense by the things that Jesus said, 00:17:21.94\00:17:24.17 focus on them, and ask the Lord, 00:17:24.21\00:17:26.04 "Lord, what is it that You have for me 00:17:26.07\00:17:28.61 in these Scriptures? 00:17:28.64\00:17:29.98 Be my teacher. 00:17:30.01\00:17:31.55 "And when you come to the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:17:31.58\00:17:33.85 you know, He was the greatest teacher 00:17:33.88\00:17:36.32 that has ever walked upon this earth. 00:17:36.35\00:17:38.69 And today, there are people 00:17:38.72\00:17:41.22 that have been considered great teachers, 00:17:41.26\00:17:44.03 are highly intelligent, some people think of Einstein. 00:17:44.06\00:17:47.23 But when you think of all these great teachers 00:17:47.26\00:17:50.33 and compare them to Jesus, 00:17:50.37\00:17:51.70 they all need to humble themselves 00:17:51.73\00:17:53.10 before the Lord, 00:17:53.13\00:17:54.60 come and learn at the feet of Jesus. 00:17:54.64\00:17:57.94 I remember seeing a commercial many years ago, 00:17:57.97\00:18:00.71 and I don't know what it was about, 00:18:00.74\00:18:02.64 they were just kind of panning along 00:18:02.68\00:18:05.01 and they were showing people at restaurant 00:18:05.05\00:18:06.58 talking and talking, eating, eating, 00:18:06.61\00:18:08.48 and all of a sudden everybody goes silent. 00:18:08.52\00:18:11.55 And then the announcer said, 00:18:11.59\00:18:12.92 "When EF Hutton speaks, people listen." 00:18:12.95\00:18:16.59 And I say, "Wow, what a powerful message." 00:18:16.62\00:18:19.23 But this is what 00:18:19.26\00:18:20.60 we need to consider about Jesus. 00:18:20.63\00:18:22.53 So when we take time to pause and ask Jesus, 00:18:22.56\00:18:27.37 "Lord, teach me, " 00:18:27.40\00:18:29.77 then you can really begin to learn. 00:18:29.80\00:18:33.44 And Jesus did invite us to learn from Him. 00:18:33.48\00:18:36.68 Let's go to Matthew 11:28-30. 00:18:36.71\00:18:41.12 Matthew 11:28-30. 00:18:41.15\00:18:43.75 "Come to Me," Jesus says, 00:18:43.79\00:18:46.39 "all who labor and are heavy laden, 00:18:46.42\00:18:49.12 and I will give you rest." 00:18:49.16\00:18:50.79 Wow, in these words, 00:18:50.83\00:18:52.96 it's enough to study for a lifetime. 00:18:52.99\00:18:55.16 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, 00:18:55.20\00:18:59.00 for I am gentle and lowly in heart, 00:18:59.03\00:19:01.50 and you will find rest for your souls. 00:19:01.54\00:19:04.07 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." 00:19:04.11\00:19:07.38 Dear, dear children of God, 00:19:07.41\00:19:10.58 Jesus wants you to learn of Him. 00:19:10.61\00:19:13.48 And His invitation is, "Come on to Me and lean on Me." 00:19:13.52\00:19:17.62 And His invitation is to all and I praise the Lord for that. 00:19:17.65\00:19:21.29 And so I want to read this to you 00:19:21.32\00:19:23.43 from Councils on Education, very powerful, very powerful. 00:19:23.46\00:19:28.96 Listen to this. 00:19:29.00\00:19:30.33 "It is right that you should feel 00:19:30.37\00:19:32.07 that you must climb to the highest rung 00:19:32.10\00:19:34.60 of the educational ladder. 00:19:34.64\00:19:36.97 Philosophy and history are important studies, 00:19:37.01\00:19:39.64 but your sacrifice of time and money will avail nothing 00:19:39.67\00:19:43.14 if you do not use your attainments 00:19:43.18\00:19:46.18 for the honor of God and for the good of humanity. 00:19:46.21\00:19:51.02 Unless the knowledge of science is a stepping stone 00:19:51.05\00:19:55.52 to the attainment of the highest purposes, 00:19:55.56\00:19:58.69 it is worthless. 00:19:58.73\00:20:00.63 The education that does not furnish knowledge 00:20:00.66\00:20:04.30 as enduring as eternity is of no purpose. 00:20:04.33\00:20:09.07 The education..." 00:20:09.10\00:20:11.07 I read that part. 00:20:11.11\00:20:12.44 "Unless you keep having in the future 00:20:12.47\00:20:14.98 in mortal life before you, 00:20:15.01\00:20:16.61 your attainments are of no permanent value. 00:20:16.64\00:20:19.95 But if Jesus is your teacher, 00:20:19.98\00:20:23.52 not simply on one day of the week 00:20:23.55\00:20:26.05 but every day, every hour, 00:20:26.09\00:20:28.69 you may have His smile upon you 00:20:28.72\00:20:31.86 in the pursuit of literary acquirements." 00:20:31.89\00:20:35.96 So don't let Jesus be your teacher one day a week, 00:20:36.00\00:20:40.04 you know, unfortunately, 00:20:40.07\00:20:42.50 there are a lot of people that open their Bible 00:20:42.54\00:20:47.08 for the first time in the week when they get to church. 00:20:47.11\00:20:49.58 When somebody says, "Turn your Bibles to, " 00:20:49.61\00:20:51.78 and that's when they're opening their Bible for the first time. 00:20:51.81\00:20:54.88 A sad and horrible mistake 00:20:54.92\00:20:56.99 because Jesus wants to teach us even every hour. 00:20:57.02\00:21:00.69 And I encourage you to take time to learn of Jesus. 00:21:00.72\00:21:06.43 And those that are listening, 00:21:06.46\00:21:09.30 that are teachers need to take time to learn 00:21:09.33\00:21:12.03 at the feet of Jesus as well 00:21:12.07\00:21:14.47 because through Him, 00:21:14.50\00:21:16.91 we can reach our highest purpose 00:21:16.94\00:21:20.01 in this life through Jesus Christ. 00:21:20.04\00:21:22.01 There is another quote that I want to read to you 00:21:22.04\00:21:24.15 because it is also very powerful 00:21:24.18\00:21:25.95 as it talks about how Jesus spoke 00:21:25.98\00:21:29.15 in the book Gospel Workers page 260, 00:21:29.18\00:21:32.39 I read to you from the book Education before. 00:21:32.42\00:21:34.62 "When Jesus spoke, 00:21:34.66\00:21:36.02 it was not with hesitating uncertainty, 00:21:36.06\00:21:39.96 His words came within earnestness 00:21:40.00\00:21:42.66 and assurance 00:21:42.70\00:21:44.03 appropriate to their importance, 00:21:44.07\00:21:45.93 and the momentous consequences 00:21:45.97\00:21:47.90 involved in their reception or rejection." 00:21:47.94\00:21:52.11 So this is the teacher whom we need to learn from. 00:21:52.14\00:21:56.01 And when you talk about learning from Jesus, 00:21:56.04\00:21:58.25 what did Jesus do? 00:21:58.28\00:22:00.45 He spent a lot of time in prayer. 00:22:00.48\00:22:02.45 You read in the Bible 00:22:02.48\00:22:03.92 that it says He rose a great while before day. 00:22:03.95\00:22:10.13 In other words, He got up 00:22:10.16\00:22:11.86 when everybody was still snoring away, 00:22:11.89\00:22:14.56 and it was still dark, He went a place apart, 00:22:14.60\00:22:17.87 to pray and have communion with the Father. 00:22:17.90\00:22:21.14 And we understand this as, 00:22:21.17\00:22:24.57 you know, we consider ourselves students of the Lord 00:22:24.61\00:22:28.01 but also the Lord uses us as teachers. 00:22:28.04\00:22:30.25 And we learn at the feet of Jesus as well. 00:22:30.28\00:22:33.25 And he who tries to teach others about Jesus 00:22:33.28\00:22:36.72 before learning at the feet of Jesus 00:22:36.75\00:22:38.89 is making a grave, serious mistake. 00:22:38.92\00:22:41.96 We need to humble ourselves before the Lord 00:22:41.99\00:22:43.83 because it is only by humbling ourselves 00:22:43.86\00:22:46.33 before the Lord that we really open our minds 00:22:46.36\00:22:49.16 and our understanding 00:22:49.20\00:22:51.30 so that He can feed us and teach us 00:22:51.33\00:22:54.47 and He has so much to teach us. 00:22:54.50\00:22:57.27 And yes, there's... 00:22:57.31\00:23:00.28 Let's go to it. 00:23:00.31\00:23:01.64 Let's go to John 3 00:23:01.68\00:23:04.45 and we're going to read that moment 00:23:04.48\00:23:07.95 when a teacher of Israel came to Jesus. 00:23:07.98\00:23:13.62 Beginning of verse 1, John Chapter 1. 00:23:13.66\00:23:16.16 I'm sorry, John 3, beginning in verse 1, 00:23:16.19\00:23:17.79 "There was a man of the Pharisees 00:23:17.83\00:23:20.10 named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 00:23:20.13\00:23:24.27 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, 00:23:24.30\00:23:29.54 'Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher 00:23:29.57\00:23:33.11 come from God, 00:23:33.14\00:23:35.04 for no one can do these things that You do 00:23:35.08\00:23:38.08 unless God is with him.'" 00:23:38.11\00:23:41.18 He says, some very wise words, 00:23:41.22\00:23:43.72 "Jesus answered and said to him," 00:23:43.75\00:23:46.32 He ignored him, practically He said, 00:23:46.35\00:23:48.49 and He said, "Most assuredly, 00:23:48.52\00:23:50.36 I say to you, unless one is born again, 00:23:50.39\00:23:54.40 he cannot see the kingdom of God." 00:23:54.43\00:23:56.67 Jesus looked into the deepest deed 00:23:56.70\00:23:59.27 of Nicodemus 00:23:59.30\00:24:00.64 and spoke to his heart and spoke to his greatest need, 00:24:00.67\00:24:04.17 awakened his desire to learn more. 00:24:04.21\00:24:08.21 And then as you continue reading, 00:24:08.24\00:24:09.71 you will see that he began to ask questions. 00:24:09.74\00:24:12.28 Don't be afraid to ask the Lord questions 00:24:12.31\00:24:16.28 because the Lord has answers. 00:24:16.32\00:24:18.59 And that's why He says, "Come unto Me, 00:24:18.62\00:24:21.06 and learn of Me." 00:24:21.09\00:24:22.59 And so the Lord wants to teach us even today. 00:24:22.62\00:24:28.40 1 Corinthians 12:28, I got to read this quickly. 00:24:28.43\00:24:30.83 "And God has set some in these in the church, 00:24:30.87\00:24:33.07 first apostles, second prophets, 00:24:33.10\00:24:35.10 thirdly teachers, after that miracles, 00:24:35.14\00:24:37.27 then gifts of healings, helps governments, 00:24:37.31\00:24:38.91 diversities of tongues," and it continues, 00:24:38.94\00:24:41.28 but the Lord has blessed 00:24:41.31\00:24:43.08 with the gift of teaching as well. 00:24:43.11\00:24:45.05 You may have that, 00:24:45.08\00:24:46.41 use it to God's honor and glory. 00:24:46.45\00:24:47.78 Amen. 00:24:47.82\00:24:49.15 Thank you, Pastor Dinzey. 00:24:49.18\00:24:50.52 Now we have to take a quick break, 00:24:50.55\00:24:52.75 but we'll be right back. 00:25:35.33\00:25:37.57 I love that we are made in the image of God. 00:25:37.60\00:25:40.87 And then Jesus as our teacher Rabbi, 00:25:40.90\00:25:43.67 on I have Tuesday's lesson, 00:25:43.71\00:25:45.94 we look at Moses and the prophets 00:25:45.97\00:25:48.61 looking at the teaching material 00:25:48.64\00:25:50.25 that is contained in the Word of God. 00:25:50.28\00:25:53.82 The educational thoughts, 00:25:53.85\00:25:55.18 the instruction that we can find in the Bible. 00:25:55.22\00:25:58.32 Noah Webster is called the father 00:25:58.35\00:26:00.96 of American scholarship and education. 00:26:00.99\00:26:04.13 His Blue Back Speller 00:26:04.16\00:26:05.89 taught five generations of Americans to read. 00:26:05.93\00:26:09.33 He said this, 00:26:09.36\00:26:10.70 "Education is useless without the Bible." 00:26:10.73\00:26:14.14 The Bible was America's basic textbook 00:26:14.17\00:26:17.84 in all fields. 00:26:17.87\00:26:20.51 If you fast forward quite a few years, 00:26:20.54\00:26:22.88 Time magazine had a cover in 2007. 00:26:22.91\00:26:25.78 That was called this, 00:26:25.81\00:26:27.42 The Case for Teaching the Bible. 00:26:27.45\00:26:30.75 And the article, the author in the article 00:26:30.79\00:26:34.19 argued for teaching the Bible in public schools, 00:26:34.22\00:26:37.46 which is amazing 00:26:37.49\00:26:39.19 thinking of the political climate today. 00:26:39.23\00:26:42.40 We look at teaching material 00:26:42.43\00:26:43.87 found throughout the Word of God, 00:26:43.90\00:26:45.47 hopefully, we're going to make it 00:26:45.50\00:26:46.90 all the way through the Bible, 00:26:46.94\00:26:48.67 we're going to look at the different sections 00:26:48.70\00:26:50.64 or genres of the Bible, 00:26:50.67\00:26:52.77 how it's divided up into sections, 00:26:52.81\00:26:54.58 and then we're going to take a different book of the Bible 00:26:54.61\00:26:57.58 and each one of those sections 00:26:57.61\00:26:59.05 and see the educational material 00:26:59.08\00:27:00.88 that we can find in the Word of God. 00:27:00.92\00:27:03.99 I just want to quote the memory texts 00:27:04.02\00:27:05.45 that Shelley did a beautiful job 00:27:05.49\00:27:06.86 with at the beginning. 00:27:06.89\00:27:08.22 We're going to go back a couple verses, 00:27:08.26\00:27:09.79 2 Timothy Chapter 3. 00:27:09.82\00:27:11.96 Open your Bibles to 2 Timothy Chapter 3, 00:27:11.99\00:27:14.30 we're going to look at verses 14 through 17. 00:27:14.33\00:27:17.60 Paul, of course, 00:27:17.63\00:27:18.97 speaking to his son in the faith, Timothy, 00:27:19.00\00:27:21.77 "But you must continue in the things 00:27:21.80\00:27:23.41 which you have learned and been assured of, 00:27:23.44\00:27:25.81 knowing from whom you have learned them, 00:27:25.84\00:27:29.18 and that from childhood 00:27:29.21\00:27:30.71 you have known the Holy Scriptures, 00:27:30.75\00:27:32.58 which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith 00:27:32.61\00:27:35.85 which is in Christ Jesus." 00:27:35.88\00:27:37.75 The Scriptures, 00:27:37.79\00:27:39.12 the Bible gives us everything we need for salvation, 00:27:39.15\00:27:42.69 that wisdom and knowledge of Jesus 00:27:42.72\00:27:45.16 and salvation. 00:27:45.19\00:27:46.59 Then the scripture Shelley read, 00:27:46.63\00:27:48.36 all Scripture is given by inspiration of God. 00:27:48.40\00:27:51.87 All Scripture is God breathed. 00:27:51.90\00:27:55.87 I love that word all. 00:27:55.90\00:27:57.24 Its pos in Greek, it means each and every one. 00:27:57.27\00:28:01.64 What I love about that is it doesn't mean 00:28:01.68\00:28:03.41 just a certain Scripture I like 00:28:03.45\00:28:05.58 or the passage 00:28:05.61\00:28:06.95 I particularly feel an affinity to, 00:28:06.98\00:28:09.45 it means each and every scripture 00:28:09.48\00:28:12.62 is God breathed. 00:28:12.65\00:28:13.99 The ones I like or maybe dislike, 00:28:14.02\00:28:16.09 the ones that I agree with, or maybe not. 00:28:16.12\00:28:18.59 The ones that make me feel good 00:28:18.63\00:28:20.06 and the ones that may be cut like a sharp two-edged sword. 00:28:20.10\00:28:23.87 All Scripture is God breathed. That's right. 00:28:23.90\00:28:27.04 It's given by inspiration of God. 00:28:27.07\00:28:28.47 It's profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, 00:28:28.50\00:28:31.57 Shelley already covered that. 00:28:31.61\00:28:33.01 Instruction in righteousness that the man of God 00:28:33.04\00:28:35.34 may be complete or perfect, 00:28:35.38\00:28:37.55 thoroughly furnished for every good work. 00:28:37.58\00:28:41.48 Scripture gives us knowledge of salvation, 00:28:41.52\00:28:44.32 and instruction in righteousness. 00:28:44.35\00:28:46.42 It teaches us. 00:28:46.45\00:28:47.82 It corrects and straightens out those areas in my life 00:28:47.86\00:28:51.09 that are maybe out of balance. 00:28:51.13\00:28:53.93 So let's look at the teaching and instruction 00:28:53.96\00:28:56.00 found in the Word of God. 00:28:56.03\00:28:57.67 The first section of the Bible is, of course, 00:28:57.70\00:29:00.44 the five books of the law. 00:29:00.47\00:29:02.17 This is Genesis through Deuteronomy. 00:29:02.20\00:29:05.07 Five books of the law known as the Pentateuch, 00:29:05.11\00:29:07.44 the Torah, the law. 00:29:07.48\00:29:09.64 Torah means teaching or instruction. 00:29:09.68\00:29:13.38 Instead of thinking of it as just dos and don'ts, 00:29:13.42\00:29:16.35 rules and regulations, 00:29:16.38\00:29:18.79 the Torah is filled with teaching material 00:29:18.82\00:29:21.99 with how we are to live 00:29:22.02\00:29:23.69 in covenant relationship with God. 00:29:23.73\00:29:27.00 There's also some history and biblical narrative 00:29:27.03\00:29:29.60 found there as well. 00:29:29.63\00:29:30.97 Let's look at the book of Genesis. 00:29:31.00\00:29:32.43 Of course we know Moses was the author of those books. 00:29:32.47\00:29:35.54 In Genesis we see origins, 00:29:35.57\00:29:37.54 the beginning of the world and humanity, 00:29:37.57\00:29:39.61 the beginning of light and darkness, animals, plants, 00:29:39.64\00:29:42.28 the beginning of the Sabbath, 00:29:42.31\00:29:44.01 the beginning unfortunately of sin, 00:29:44.05\00:29:46.51 and the beginning of salvation 00:29:46.55\00:29:48.78 or that plan of salvation 00:29:48.82\00:29:50.79 that was unfolded to Adam and Eve. 00:29:50.82\00:29:53.72 We have our foundational understanding 00:29:53.76\00:29:55.82 of basic theology, 00:29:55.86\00:29:57.43 the framework for our theology is laid 00:29:57.46\00:30:00.26 in those first few chapters of the book of Genesis. 00:30:00.30\00:30:03.37 We see God as Creator. 00:30:03.40\00:30:04.93 God as Savior. 00:30:04.97\00:30:06.30 We see humans coming from the dust 00:30:06.33\00:30:07.80 and returning back to dust. 00:30:07.84\00:30:09.24 We see marriage and family and community, 00:30:09.27\00:30:11.84 we see salvation, 00:30:11.87\00:30:13.21 we see this great controversy plan 00:30:13.24\00:30:15.64 between good and evil. 00:30:15.68\00:30:18.05 We see wonderful promises and covenantal relationship 00:30:18.08\00:30:23.25 in the book of Genesis, that first messianic promise. 00:30:23.28\00:30:27.62 And then the Noahic Covenant in Genesis 8, 00:30:27.66\00:30:29.72 the Abrahamic Covenant in Genesis Chapter 15. 00:30:29.76\00:30:32.73 The next section of the Bible is the 12 books of history, 00:30:32.76\00:30:36.83 biblical narrative. 00:30:36.87\00:30:38.20 This is Joshua through Nehemiah. 00:30:38.23\00:30:41.07 And this really shows us 00:30:41.10\00:30:42.44 how well God's people master 00:30:42.47\00:30:45.07 the educational material they were taught 00:30:45.11\00:30:47.48 and how they lived by it. 00:30:47.51\00:30:49.04 And we see sometimes they really follow God 00:30:49.08\00:30:51.31 and master that educational material. 00:30:51.35\00:30:53.82 Sometimes they didn't follow him so well 00:30:53.85\00:30:55.62 and they had to be rebuked and chasten. 00:30:55.65\00:30:58.59 Some judgment came and they went back to Him. 00:30:58.62\00:31:01.39 The book I'm going to pick in that section is Nehemiah. 00:31:01.42\00:31:04.49 We see the return of the exiles, 00:31:04.53\00:31:06.29 of course, the first return under Ezra with 50,000 people, 00:31:06.33\00:31:09.70 the second return under Ezra maybe 6,000. 00:31:09.73\00:31:12.60 The third return under Nehemiah. 00:31:12.63\00:31:15.14 In the book of Nehemiah we see reconstruction. 00:31:15.17\00:31:17.94 Of course, Ezra we know 00:31:17.97\00:31:19.31 focused on reconstruction of the temple, 00:31:19.34\00:31:21.14 Nehemiah focused on reconstruction of the wall. 00:31:21.18\00:31:24.41 In Nehemiah, we see reform, 00:31:24.45\00:31:26.38 reform and commitment to the law of God 00:31:26.41\00:31:29.32 and to their covenant relationship 00:31:29.35\00:31:31.32 with God. 00:31:31.35\00:31:32.69 We see the covenant 00:31:32.72\00:31:34.06 and God is the keeper of the covenant 00:31:34.09\00:31:35.42 and covenant renewal take place in the book of Nehemiah. 00:31:35.46\00:31:39.23 And we see reading from the Word of God. 00:31:39.26\00:31:41.93 The next section is the five books of poetry 00:31:41.96\00:31:45.43 or the five wisdom books. 00:31:45.47\00:31:47.77 It's the Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon. 00:31:47.80\00:31:52.27 The Book of Psalms, 00:31:52.31\00:31:54.78 there are at least three educational Psalms 00:31:54.81\00:31:58.01 that they call Educational Psalms 00:31:58.05\00:31:59.88 in the book of Psalms. 00:31:59.91\00:32:01.25 Now clearly the entire book would be educational, 00:32:01.28\00:32:04.09 but there's at least three, 00:32:04.12\00:32:05.45 Psalm 1, Psalm 37, and Psalm 73. 00:32:05.49\00:32:09.26 Psalm 1 is a meditation, it's a study on God's law. 00:32:09.29\00:32:13.26 It contrasts the ways of the righteous 00:32:13.29\00:32:15.50 and the ways that the wicked. 00:32:15.53\00:32:16.93 The righteous are like a tree 00:32:16.97\00:32:18.63 and the wicked are like the chaff, 00:32:18.67\00:32:20.97 which is blown away. 00:32:21.00\00:32:22.50 The way of the righteous is known by God, 00:32:22.54\00:32:25.44 the way of the wicked shall perish. 00:32:25.47\00:32:28.34 The next section is the 17 books of prophecy. 00:32:28.38\00:32:32.05 This is the major and the minor prophets. 00:32:32.08\00:32:35.35 The educational material here 00:32:35.38\00:32:38.35 is what the people ought to have learned 00:32:38.39\00:32:41.92 from the educational material. 00:32:41.96\00:32:43.49 And we see this judgment of God, 00:32:43.53\00:32:45.63 of course, the major prophets Isaiah to Daniel 00:32:45.66\00:32:48.13 and then the 12 minor prophets. 00:32:48.16\00:32:50.83 If you look at the book of Isaiah, 00:32:50.87\00:32:52.37 it's probably one of my favorite books. 00:32:52.40\00:32:55.44 His name, of course, means the Lord saves, 00:32:55.47\00:32:58.17 and that fits the theme of the book. 00:32:58.21\00:33:00.94 Isaiah's kind of divided into two books. 00:33:00.98\00:33:03.04 The first section would be the book of judgment. 00:33:03.08\00:33:06.65 The second section 00:33:06.68\00:33:08.02 being the book of comfort and restoration. 00:33:08.05\00:33:10.92 The first book shows... 00:33:10.95\00:33:12.29 The first half of the book 00:33:12.32\00:33:14.19 shows the results of following after idols 00:33:14.22\00:33:16.29 and after their own gods. 00:33:16.32\00:33:17.89 The second half shows God's mercy and forgiveness 00:33:17.93\00:33:20.70 and restoration if they came back to Him. 00:33:20.73\00:33:24.20 We see prophecies in the book of Isaiah, 00:33:24.23\00:33:26.13 we see promises in the book of Isaiah, 00:33:26.17\00:33:28.74 we see God's holiness in the book of Isaiah, 00:33:28.77\00:33:31.64 God's sovereignty, His trustworthiness, 00:33:31.67\00:33:34.34 His love and commitment to His people. 00:33:34.38\00:33:36.81 We jump over to the New Testament. 00:33:36.85\00:33:38.61 The first four books, of course, are the gospel. 00:33:38.65\00:33:40.72 Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 00:33:40.75\00:33:43.05 The gospels are bound in educational material 00:33:43.08\00:33:45.62 because there's the parables of Jesus. 00:33:45.65\00:33:47.82 There's the teachings of Jesus. 00:33:47.86\00:33:50.73 And the book of Matthew, 00:33:50.76\00:33:52.59 we have what they call five discourses, 00:33:52.63\00:33:55.46 which are these teachings of Jesus. 00:33:55.50\00:33:57.93 The Sermon on the Mount, of course, Matthew 5 through 7 00:33:57.97\00:34:00.90 contains those central tenants of Christian discipleship. 00:34:00.94\00:34:04.54 Then there's the missionary discourse 00:34:04.57\00:34:06.17 and Matthew 10, 00:34:06.21\00:34:07.54 Jesus to the 12 apostles just before they're sent down. 00:34:07.58\00:34:10.68 There's the parabolic discourse in Matthew 13, 00:34:10.71\00:34:13.72 with the parables, 00:34:13.75\00:34:15.08 the church discourse in Matthew 18 00:34:15.12\00:34:17.42 and all of it discourse, that end-time events, 00:34:17.45\00:34:21.42 then we have one book of history, 00:34:21.46\00:34:22.99 biblical narrative, which is Acts. 00:34:23.02\00:34:25.63 And of course, the theme of that 00:34:25.66\00:34:27.00 is the early Christian church 00:34:27.03\00:34:29.63 showcasing the spread of Christianity 00:34:29.66\00:34:31.93 to the then known world. 00:34:31.97\00:34:34.44 We have 21 Epistles, 00:34:34.47\00:34:36.77 books of letters to churches and individuals, 00:34:36.81\00:34:40.44 14 of them written by Paul and then 7 written by James, 00:34:40.48\00:34:44.48 Peter, John, and Jude. 00:34:44.51\00:34:46.51 If you look at each one of them, 00:34:46.55\00:34:48.68 they begin with a gospel proclamation, 00:34:48.72\00:34:51.85 but they end with educational material, 00:34:51.89\00:34:54.06 practical material, 00:34:54.09\00:34:55.66 lessons for our lives today as Christians. 00:34:55.69\00:35:00.56 And then the final book, 00:35:00.60\00:35:01.93 the final section would be the book of prophecy. 00:35:01.96\00:35:04.80 That's the last book of the Bible, 00:35:04.83\00:35:06.20 the book of Revelation. 00:35:06.23\00:35:08.20 We see in there Jesus Christ, the Son of man, 00:35:08.24\00:35:11.17 Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Lamb, the Word of God, 00:35:11.21\00:35:14.28 we see the heavenly sanctuary. 00:35:14.31\00:35:16.51 And the throne room, 00:35:16.54\00:35:18.18 we see the cross lifted up and the gospel portrayed, 00:35:18.21\00:35:21.78 we see the death resurrection, 00:35:21.82\00:35:23.25 ascension of Jesus, the church, the end of the world, 00:35:23.28\00:35:26.49 and end-time events. 00:35:26.52\00:35:29.02 So as we look at the Bible as a textbook, 00:35:29.06\00:35:31.13 the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation 00:35:31.16\00:35:34.00 shows us the character of God. 00:35:34.03\00:35:36.43 Amen. 00:35:36.46\00:35:39.03 Praise the Lord. 00:35:39.07\00:35:41.10 That was... 00:35:41.14\00:35:42.60 Praise the Lord. 00:35:42.64\00:35:44.24 I took 10 of my seconds to say that. 00:35:44.27\00:35:47.58 Praise the Lord. That was wonderful. 00:35:47.61\00:35:49.54 Wednesday, Wise Men and Women. 00:35:49.58\00:35:52.95 As you were reading, Jill, 00:35:52.98\00:35:54.58 you went to 2 Timothy 3:14 & 15 00:35:54.62\00:35:57.29 to talk about the Holy Scriptures. 00:35:57.32\00:35:59.32 I want to use that very same passage 00:35:59.35\00:36:01.06 to talk about wisdom. 00:36:01.09\00:36:04.09 But you must continue in the thing... 00:36:04.13\00:36:06.26 2 Timothy 3:14 and 15. 00:36:06.29\00:36:09.23 But you must continue with the things 00:36:09.26\00:36:10.77 which you have learned 00:36:10.80\00:36:12.30 and been assured of knowing 00:36:12.33\00:36:14.37 from whom you have learned them 00:36:14.40\00:36:16.34 and that from childhood, 00:36:16.37\00:36:18.77 you have known the Holy Scriptures 00:36:18.81\00:36:20.54 which are able to make you wise. 00:36:20.58\00:36:23.38 Wise men and women. 00:36:23.41\00:36:25.28 The word there wise comes from the Greek word, 00:36:25.31\00:36:28.38 [speaking in Greek], 00:36:28.42\00:36:29.78 which means the act of becoming wise, 00:36:29.82\00:36:33.22 not that you were wise prior to that, 00:36:33.25\00:36:35.09 but it's saying, 00:36:35.12\00:36:36.46 the more you read, the wiser you become. 00:36:36.49\00:36:39.86 And when the Bible talks about wisdom, wisdom, 00:36:39.89\00:36:42.53 in this sense, as Paul's writing to Timothy, 00:36:42.56\00:36:46.10 this is an ever-increasing wisdom, 00:36:46.13\00:36:48.44 which the Bible, 00:36:48.47\00:36:49.80 the entrance of God's Word brings light. 00:36:49.84\00:36:52.51 And so if you're in a dark tunnel, 00:36:52.54\00:36:53.88 as long as you have light, you can see where you're going. 00:36:53.91\00:36:56.44 If you don't read the Bible, you can be religious, 00:36:56.48\00:36:59.81 but your tunnel is going to be dark 00:36:59.85\00:37:01.18 and you have no idea where you're headed. 00:37:01.22\00:37:03.45 So desire wisdom above religion, 00:37:03.49\00:37:08.02 and wisdom will bring with it, 00:37:08.06\00:37:10.16 not just religion but knowledge of God 00:37:10.19\00:37:12.93 that cannot be attained any other way. 00:37:12.96\00:37:15.50 Also, in the book of 2 Samuel 14:2, 00:37:15.53\00:37:18.07 we find the Bible also talks about wise women. 00:37:18.10\00:37:20.77 Now oftentimes, we think of wisdom 00:37:20.80\00:37:22.80 in the Scriptures as well, 00:37:22.84\00:37:24.17 we know about Solomon, 00:37:24.21\00:37:25.57 but we often don't think about women 00:37:25.61\00:37:27.64 but after hearing what you just did, Jill, 00:37:27.68\00:37:29.31 that's wisdom. 00:37:29.34\00:37:30.68 Praise the Lord. 00:37:30.71\00:37:32.05 And so it's good to have people who allow the Word of God 00:37:32.08\00:37:34.25 to give them wisdom, 00:37:34.28\00:37:35.62 such as continually is displayed 00:37:35.65\00:37:37.75 when we study God's Word. 00:37:37.79\00:37:40.36 2 Samuel 14:2 says, 00:37:40.39\00:37:41.96 "And Joab sent to Tekoa 00:37:41.99\00:37:44.03 and brought from there a wise woman, and said to her, 00:37:44.06\00:37:48.46 'Please pretend to be a mourner, 00:37:48.50\00:37:51.50 and put on mourning apparel, '" 00:37:51.53\00:37:53.47 evidently she knew exactly how to mourn 00:37:53.50\00:37:55.34 because he said do it the way you know best, 00:37:55.37\00:37:57.37 she was wise, 00:37:57.41\00:37:58.91 "and do not anoint yourself with oil, 00:37:58.94\00:38:00.91 but act like a woman 00:38:00.94\00:38:02.28 who has been mourning a long time for the dead." 00:38:02.31\00:38:04.91 Now the word there wise meaning it means they're cunning, 00:38:04.95\00:38:09.02 she's able to display, 00:38:09.05\00:38:10.59 she was able to get into that mode immediately. 00:38:10.62\00:38:13.19 And actors today are some wise people. 00:38:13.22\00:38:16.83 I remember reading the story years ago about Tom Hanks, 00:38:16.86\00:38:20.20 when he played so many roles 00:38:20.23\00:38:22.63 that people thought they knew him, 00:38:22.66\00:38:24.13 but what they simply did is they knew him in their role. 00:38:24.17\00:38:27.14 And as he said, 00:38:27.17\00:38:28.50 "Life is like a bowl of chocolate, " 00:38:28.54\00:38:32.11 and so they knew him in all the roles he played 00:38:32.14\00:38:35.08 but he became that character 00:38:35.11\00:38:38.28 by following the director and the producer. 00:38:38.31\00:38:41.12 And in the reality of the comparison, 00:38:41.15\00:38:43.69 we can only become the character 00:38:43.72\00:38:45.19 that God intends for us to become 00:38:45.22\00:38:48.09 when we follow the director, and the producer. 00:38:48.12\00:38:51.26 Director God, the producer Jesus, 00:38:51.29\00:38:53.66 and the power of that ability to transform 00:38:53.70\00:38:56.77 is the Holy Spirit. 00:38:56.80\00:38:58.13 We need those active agents. 00:38:58.17\00:38:59.97 The Bible also says in Proverbs 16:23, 00:39:00.00\00:39:03.44 "The heart of the wise teaches his mouth 00:39:03.47\00:39:06.54 and adds learning to his lips." 00:39:06.57\00:39:09.44 I've discovered through the years, 00:39:09.48\00:39:11.08 now I'm not up to my sixth or seventh Bible now. 00:39:11.11\00:39:14.12 And I'm having a challenge going from my Bible. 00:39:14.15\00:39:16.28 That's so well marked to my remnant Bible. 00:39:16.32\00:39:18.75 My wife keeps saying 00:39:18.79\00:39:20.12 use your new remnant Study Bible. 00:39:20.16\00:39:22.12 I said, "Honey, this Bible is like my right hand." 00:39:22.16\00:39:25.29 You know what I'm talking about? 00:39:25.33\00:39:26.66 After you get to use the pages, 00:39:26.70\00:39:28.56 you know how many pages to pick up to get to a book. 00:39:28.60\00:39:31.03 There's like all of a sudden you buy a brand-new sword 00:39:31.07\00:39:33.27 and although it's pretty, 00:39:33.30\00:39:35.24 it's going to take a while to learn how to use it. 00:39:35.27\00:39:37.71 But the Bible is a book of wisdom 00:39:37.74\00:39:39.51 that continues to guide us in Solomon 00:39:39.54\00:39:42.54 is referred to in 1 Kings 4:29-34. 00:39:42.58\00:39:46.45 It says in verse 34, "And men of all nations, 00:39:46.48\00:39:50.35 from all the kings of the east who had heard of his wisdom, 00:39:50.39\00:39:54.32 came to hear the wisdom of Solomon." 00:39:54.36\00:39:58.39 Where did Solomon get his wisdom from? 00:39:58.43\00:40:00.00 And the Lord said to him, "What would you desire?" 00:40:00.03\00:40:02.46 Now people that have that question 00:40:02.50\00:40:06.10 to pose to the Lord, 00:40:06.13\00:40:07.84 what will you desire? 00:40:07.87\00:40:09.20 The Lord said, Solomon could have said, 00:40:09.24\00:40:11.11 "I want wealth. 00:40:11.14\00:40:12.47 I want to be powerful. 00:40:12.51\00:40:13.84 I want to be the greatest military general." 00:40:13.88\00:40:15.98 But he said, "I want wisdom. 00:40:16.01\00:40:17.75 I want to be able to discern. 00:40:17.78\00:40:20.18 I want to know how to make right decisions." 00:40:20.22\00:40:23.55 And the Lord said, "That was a wise choice." 00:40:23.59\00:40:26.99 But since you didn't ask for the other things, 00:40:27.02\00:40:28.66 I'm going to give you all those things also. 00:40:28.69\00:40:30.76 And I'll tell you, outside of Uzziah 00:40:30.79\00:40:34.76 was the second wisest man in the Bible... 00:40:34.80\00:40:37.47 Uzziah was the second wealthiest man 00:40:37.50\00:40:39.20 in the Bible, 00:40:39.23\00:40:40.57 sorry, only second to Solomon, great possessions, 00:40:40.60\00:40:44.21 a man who reigned for 52 years, 00:40:44.24\00:40:46.84 but his life didn't end 00:40:46.88\00:40:48.61 in the way that was an honor to the Lord. 00:40:48.64\00:40:50.75 But what I want to bring out right now 00:40:50.78\00:40:52.11 are the different types of wisdom. 00:40:52.15\00:40:54.22 Let's go to Romans 7:18. 00:40:54.25\00:40:56.25 The first type of wisdom is practical wisdom, 00:40:56.28\00:40:59.69 practical wisdom. 00:40:59.72\00:41:01.22 Wisdom is defined 00:41:01.26\00:41:02.59 as the quality or state of being wise 00:41:02.62\00:41:05.23 knowledge of what is true or right, 00:41:05.26\00:41:07.56 coupled with just judgment 00:41:07.60\00:41:09.53 as to the action or the intelligence 00:41:09.56\00:41:12.17 that should follow the information you have, 00:41:12.20\00:41:14.64 discernment or insight, 00:41:14.67\00:41:16.30 scholarly knowledge or learning, 00:41:16.34\00:41:18.74 the wisdom of the schools, 00:41:18.77\00:41:20.54 wise sayings or teachings, precepts, 00:41:20.58\00:41:23.91 or a wise actor saying, 00:41:23.95\00:41:25.61 those all define what wisdom is. 00:41:25.65\00:41:27.52 But practical wisdom, 00:41:27.55\00:41:29.38 practical wisdom demands more than the skill 00:41:29.42\00:41:32.02 to be perceptive about others. 00:41:32.05\00:41:34.02 It also demands the capacity to perceive oneself, 00:41:34.06\00:41:37.99 this is practical 00:41:38.03\00:41:39.43 to assess what our own motives are 00:41:39.46\00:41:43.50 to admit our failures, 00:41:43.53\00:41:45.63 to figure out what has worked 00:41:45.67\00:41:47.54 and what has not worked and why. 00:41:47.57\00:41:50.07 That's practical wisdom. 00:41:50.11\00:41:51.64 Why did that not work? 00:41:51.67\00:41:53.21 You got to assess yourself, 00:41:53.24\00:41:54.58 you have to be willing to look at yourself in Romans 7:18 00:41:54.61\00:41:57.48 is a verse of practical wisdom. 00:41:57.51\00:42:00.05 "For I know that in me, 00:42:00.08\00:42:01.42 that is, in my flesh nothing good dwells, 00:42:01.45\00:42:03.39 for to will is present with me, 00:42:03.42\00:42:05.35 but how to perform what is good I do not find." 00:42:05.39\00:42:07.82 Paul is criticizing himself. 00:42:07.86\00:42:09.46 This is why I'm failing. 00:42:09.49\00:42:10.89 So I'm not going to keep looking to myself 00:42:10.93\00:42:12.73 'cause this is why I'm failing. 00:42:12.76\00:42:14.10 That's a practical wisdom passage. 00:42:14.13\00:42:16.26 But the transition from practical to theoretical 00:42:16.30\00:42:18.57 happens when we participate 00:42:18.60\00:42:20.60 in comparison of a vacillating character 00:42:20.64\00:42:24.91 to a non-negotiable regulation. 00:42:24.94\00:42:27.54 Now watch, you got to follow, vacillating character, 00:42:27.58\00:42:29.34 I keep changing. 00:42:29.38\00:42:30.71 But now all of a sudden, we go to theoretical wisdom 00:42:30.75\00:42:33.05 'cause we compared to non-negotiable regulation, 00:42:33.08\00:42:37.75 which is here now, this is where Paul transitions. 00:42:37.79\00:42:42.12 "For we know that the laws spiritual, " 00:42:42.16\00:42:43.99 a non-negotiable regulation, Romans 7:14, 00:42:44.03\00:42:47.66 "but I am carnal sold under sin," 00:42:47.70\00:42:49.90 that happened as what, 00:42:49.93\00:42:51.27 an assessment of self, practical wisdom. 00:42:51.30\00:42:53.97 Now we go to theoretical wisdom. 00:42:54.00\00:42:56.10 What is theoretical wisdom? 00:42:56.14\00:42:58.21 The application of knowledge based on what is really right 00:42:58.24\00:43:01.64 and what is really wrong, 00:43:01.68\00:43:03.01 a constant, a theoretical wisdom. 00:43:03.04\00:43:06.25 Psalm 111:10 says, 00:43:06.28\00:43:08.32 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, 00:43:08.35\00:43:11.55 a good understanding 00:43:11.59\00:43:12.92 have all those who do His commandments. 00:43:12.95\00:43:14.92 His praise endures forever." 00:43:14.96\00:43:16.62 That is the non-negotiable regulation, 00:43:16.66\00:43:19.23 the theoretical aspect that says to us, 00:43:19.26\00:43:21.40 I'm going to compare my life to the commandments of God. 00:43:21.43\00:43:24.73 That never changes but I need help 00:43:24.77\00:43:27.40 because I vacillate. 00:43:27.44\00:43:29.07 The non-negotiable regulation 00:43:29.10\00:43:31.01 uses theoretical wisdom to say 00:43:31.04\00:43:33.54 that your practical wisdom is not enough. 00:43:33.58\00:43:36.48 Then we go down to cumulative wisdom. 00:43:36.51\00:43:39.15 Cumulative wisdom. 00:43:39.18\00:43:40.58 Decision making skill 00:43:40.62\00:43:41.95 based on the knowledge gained by experience, 00:43:41.98\00:43:45.32 learning from past experience. 00:43:45.35\00:43:47.52 Job 12:12 talks about cumulative wisdom. 00:43:47.56\00:43:51.03 Wisdom is with aged men 00:43:51.06\00:43:53.86 and with length of days understanding. 00:43:53.90\00:43:56.83 So in other words, he's saying, 00:43:56.87\00:43:58.33 "You've been around long enough. 00:43:58.37\00:44:00.04 You know what to do and what not to do." 00:44:00.07\00:44:02.10 Can I get an amen? Amen. 00:44:02.14\00:44:03.64 And as I said to one young person 00:44:03.67\00:44:05.01 who is talking about how smart they were, 00:44:05.04\00:44:06.98 smarter than their mom, 00:44:07.01\00:44:08.34 I said, "How old is your sister?" 00:44:08.38\00:44:09.71 They said, younger, I said, 00:44:09.74\00:44:11.08 "Now which one is smarter you or her?" 00:44:11.11\00:44:12.71 They said, "I got it." 00:44:12.75\00:44:15.02 The cumulative knowledge, 00:44:15.05\00:44:17.29 young people that your parents have 00:44:17.32\00:44:19.55 can help you out 00:44:19.59\00:44:20.92 if you recognize that they've been around, 00:44:20.96\00:44:23.46 that's cumulative. 00:44:23.49\00:44:25.29 Then this conventional wisdom, 00:44:25.33\00:44:27.80 a body of ideas or explanations generally accepted as true 00:44:27.83\00:44:31.07 by the public or by experts in the field. 00:44:31.10\00:44:33.70 It is wisdom that refers to all the commonplace ideas 00:44:33.74\00:44:37.61 and expert opinions 00:44:37.64\00:44:38.97 that have commonly been accepted as true. 00:44:39.01\00:44:40.81 Conventional. 00:44:40.84\00:44:42.18 In other words, they've been through this 00:44:42.21\00:44:43.75 how to make an engine, 00:44:43.78\00:44:45.11 ask somebody who've been doing it 00:44:45.15\00:44:46.48 for 50 years, 00:44:46.51\00:44:47.85 conventional wisdom. 00:44:47.88\00:44:49.22 Don't try to reinvent the engine 00:44:49.25\00:44:50.59 when somebody who's been doing it 00:44:50.62\00:44:51.95 already has done it. 00:44:51.99\00:44:53.32 Conventional text, Proverbs 11:14, 00:44:53.36\00:44:55.79 "Where there is no counsel, the people fall, 00:44:55.82\00:44:57.69 but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." 00:44:57.73\00:45:02.26 That's conventional wisdom, then the last one, 00:45:02.30\00:45:05.37 unconventional wisdom. 00:45:05.40\00:45:08.17 Thinking outside the box, when new ideas are introduced, 00:45:08.20\00:45:11.27 they usually are compared with conventional wisdom 00:45:11.31\00:45:13.94 on the subject 00:45:13.98\00:45:15.31 before they are considered to be true. 00:45:15.34\00:45:16.98 In other words, 00:45:17.01\00:45:18.35 when people think outside the box, 00:45:18.38\00:45:19.71 they say, "That's great. 00:45:19.75\00:45:21.08 But let's compare that with people that know 00:45:21.12\00:45:22.45 what they've been doing." 00:45:22.48\00:45:23.82 Here is here's the unconventional text. 00:45:23.85\00:45:26.29 Now this is amazing, great men are not always wise, 00:45:26.32\00:45:31.06 nor do the aged always understand justice. 00:45:31.09\00:45:34.26 So don't think that 00:45:34.30\00:45:35.63 because you've been around all this time 00:45:35.66\00:45:38.00 that you have all the knowledge, 00:45:38.03\00:45:39.80 still use 00:45:39.83\00:45:41.47 the theoretical non-negotiable regulation, 00:45:41.50\00:45:44.71 which is the Word of God. 00:45:44.74\00:45:46.11 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:45:46.14\00:45:47.71 Man, that was deep, 00:45:47.74\00:45:49.08 that's a lot of a lot of good gems 00:45:49.11\00:45:51.65 to be able to hold on to. 00:45:51.68\00:45:53.01 You were talking about wisdom, pastor. 00:45:53.05\00:45:54.48 And Thursday's lesson, 00:45:54.52\00:45:55.85 which is talking about Education in the Early Church, 00:45:55.88\00:45:58.85 goes back into that wisdom, 00:45:58.89\00:46:00.62 how we received that wisdom, 00:46:00.66\00:46:01.99 and by whom we received that wisdom. 00:46:02.02\00:46:04.49 You know, I could just imagine 00:46:04.53\00:46:06.59 what it would have been like to be taught by Jesus. 00:46:06.63\00:46:09.00 I think we've made it very clear, 00:46:09.03\00:46:10.67 Brother Dinzey made it very clear, 00:46:10.70\00:46:12.20 Jesus is the ultimate teacher. 00:46:12.23\00:46:13.94 And if you look 00:46:13.97\00:46:15.30 at the New Testament very clearly, 00:46:15.34\00:46:16.81 you know that obviously, the disciples 00:46:16.84\00:46:18.44 had this incredibly blessed period of time, 00:46:18.47\00:46:21.98 three and a half years, 00:46:22.01\00:46:23.41 where they literally walked and talked with Jesus 00:46:23.45\00:46:25.65 every single day. 00:46:25.68\00:46:27.02 He was their teacher, He gave them so much wisdom, 00:46:27.05\00:46:29.98 and I can only imagine all the questions 00:46:30.02\00:46:31.72 they were able to ask Him, 00:46:31.75\00:46:33.42 and it kind of, you know, makes me 00:46:33.46\00:46:34.96 just can't wait to go to heaven 00:46:34.99\00:46:36.32 because I have so many questions 00:46:36.36\00:46:38.09 that I want to ask Jesus, 00:46:38.13\00:46:39.46 and we're going to have that blessing too, right? 00:46:39.49\00:46:41.06 To be able to be with Jesus, 00:46:41.10\00:46:42.66 you know, pastors over here laughing 00:46:42.70\00:46:44.17 because he knows, he knows I love asking some questions. 00:46:44.20\00:46:47.37 In fact, I know for a fact 00:46:47.40\00:46:48.74 that there's anyone that's going to annoy, 00:46:48.77\00:46:50.17 if there's if it's possible to annoy God, 00:46:50.21\00:46:52.34 I'll be the one to do it with all my questions 00:46:52.37\00:46:54.34 'cause I have lots of questions because I like truth. 00:46:54.38\00:46:56.58 I love truth. 00:46:56.61\00:46:57.95 And I like answers. 00:46:57.98\00:46:59.31 So yes, pastor's going to show up one, 00:46:59.35\00:47:00.72 ask some questions. 00:47:00.75\00:47:02.08 I'm going to say, you got to come back 00:47:02.12\00:47:03.45 in a million years. 00:47:03.49\00:47:04.82 I got to get my questions answered. 00:47:04.85\00:47:06.55 But nonetheless, Jesus, again, 00:47:06.59\00:47:08.12 with the disciples for three and a half years, 00:47:08.16\00:47:10.16 and they're just probably like drinking from a lake 00:47:10.19\00:47:13.16 or a firehose, 00:47:13.19\00:47:14.53 or whatever you want to call it, 00:47:14.56\00:47:15.90 just amazing wisdom. 00:47:15.93\00:47:17.27 But did that teaching aspect from God to His people stop 00:47:17.30\00:47:21.14 when Jesus left? 00:47:21.17\00:47:22.50 And that's the point 00:47:22.54\00:47:23.87 that Thursday's lesson is bringing out in education 00:47:23.91\00:47:26.68 in the early church 00:47:26.71\00:47:28.24 because Jesus goes to heaven, right? 00:47:28.28\00:47:30.25 He goes into that holy place 00:47:30.28\00:47:31.98 where He is ministering on our behalf, 00:47:32.01\00:47:33.85 where He becomes our great intercessor, 00:47:33.88\00:47:35.25 our great high priest in heaven. 00:47:35.28\00:47:36.92 And now the education needs to continue, right? 00:47:36.95\00:47:40.49 It's kind of like a, you know, a road of transition 00:47:40.52\00:47:42.32 from high school to college, right? 00:47:42.36\00:47:43.69 You know, you have those three and a half to four years 00:47:43.73\00:47:45.59 in high school. 00:47:45.63\00:47:46.96 But, you know, for many of us, education doesn't stop, 00:47:47.00\00:47:49.16 we continue on. 00:47:49.20\00:47:50.53 Well, God gives the blessing of the Holy Spirit. 00:47:50.57\00:47:53.90 In fact, we're going to read about that right now. 00:47:53.94\00:47:56.10 The blessing of the promise 00:47:56.14\00:47:57.61 that God gives to the disciples is that when I'm gone, 00:47:57.64\00:48:00.04 I'm going to send you another comforter, 00:48:00.08\00:48:02.24 another helper. 00:48:02.28\00:48:03.61 We can read about that right now in John 14:15-18. 00:48:03.65\00:48:07.75 And we're also going to add verse 26 as well. 00:48:07.78\00:48:10.29 With this, the passage we've read many times. 00:48:10.32\00:48:12.32 In fact, most people read verse 15 00:48:12.35\00:48:14.26 because they've remembered John 14:15, 00:48:14.29\00:48:16.76 "If you love me, keep My commandments, " 00:48:16.79\00:48:19.83 and then they stop right there. 00:48:19.86\00:48:21.20 But ultimately, everything behind that 00:48:21.23\00:48:23.03 is a response to what Jesus just said, 00:48:23.06\00:48:25.20 in verse 14. 00:48:25.23\00:48:26.57 In fact, many people read that and go, 00:48:26.60\00:48:27.94 "Man, it's impossible 00:48:27.97\00:48:29.30 to keep the commandments," right? 00:48:29.34\00:48:30.67 And but Jesus just said, 00:48:30.71\00:48:32.04 If you love me, you'll keep them. 00:48:32.07\00:48:33.41 But the response to that is, look, 00:48:33.44\00:48:34.78 you're not going to do it comfortless. 00:48:34.81\00:48:36.14 You can keep the commandments. 00:48:36.18\00:48:38.18 And how do we keep it? 00:48:38.21\00:48:39.55 Well, verse 16 brings it about. 00:48:39.58\00:48:41.02 He says, "And I will pray the Father, 00:48:41.05\00:48:42.58 He will give you another helper, " 00:48:42.62\00:48:45.32 the original Greek there, 00:48:45.35\00:48:46.96 it just simply means another advocate, 00:48:46.99\00:48:50.13 another helper, 00:48:50.16\00:48:51.49 the Paraclete says it is in the Greek, 00:48:51.53\00:48:53.33 another helper. 00:48:53.36\00:48:54.70 God is going to send us the Holy Spirit 00:48:54.73\00:48:56.43 to continue that spiritual, wise education that we need. 00:48:56.46\00:49:00.17 He continues on that He may abide with you 00:49:00.20\00:49:02.90 for just a few years. 00:49:02.94\00:49:04.41 And the Bible says forever. 00:49:04.44\00:49:06.47 The spirit of, and I love this, truth. 00:49:06.51\00:49:08.98 Don't forget that. He is the spirit of truth. 00:49:09.01\00:49:11.61 It says, whom the world cannot receive, 00:49:11.65\00:49:13.28 because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, 00:49:13.31\00:49:15.28 but you know Him for He dwells with you 00:49:15.32\00:49:18.25 and will be with you. 00:49:18.29\00:49:20.19 "I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you. 00:49:20.22\00:49:23.06 But the helper, the Holy Spirit," 00:49:23.09\00:49:25.26 there it is again, 00:49:25.29\00:49:26.63 "whom the Father will send in My name will," 00:49:26.66\00:49:29.36 I love this, "He will teach you," 00:49:29.40\00:49:31.13 how many things? 00:49:31.17\00:49:32.50 All things. All right. 00:49:32.53\00:49:33.87 Okay, this is verse 26. 00:49:33.90\00:49:35.24 So we just went from verse 18 to 26. 00:49:35.27\00:49:37.67 In verse 26 of John 14, 00:49:37.71\00:49:39.27 he makes it clear 00:49:39.31\00:49:40.64 that the Holy Spirit is in the business 00:49:40.68\00:49:42.34 of teaching us all things. 00:49:42.38\00:49:44.21 He wants to give us all of those beautiful things 00:49:44.25\00:49:46.41 and teachings from God. 00:49:46.45\00:49:47.78 He will teach you all things in bring, notice this, 00:49:47.82\00:49:49.95 bring to your remembrance 00:49:49.98\00:49:51.32 all things that I have said to you. 00:49:51.35\00:49:53.05 That's an awesome, beautiful promise. 00:49:53.09\00:49:55.16 In fact, we're going to transition now 00:49:55.19\00:49:57.03 over to 1 Corinthians Chapter 2 00:49:57.06\00:49:58.63 for the remaining time that we have. 00:49:58.66\00:50:00.30 Paul, actually, he amplifies this, 00:50:00.33\00:50:03.06 what Christ has given. 00:50:03.10\00:50:04.43 Christ gives the promise. 00:50:04.47\00:50:05.80 He says when you leave, when I leave, 00:50:05.83\00:50:07.60 you're going to go to Jerusalem, 00:50:07.64\00:50:08.97 you're going to wait 00:50:09.00\00:50:10.34 because I'm going to send you the comforter, the Holy Spirit. 00:50:10.37\00:50:11.71 And we know that the Holy Spirit 00:50:11.74\00:50:13.07 was poured out 00:50:13.11\00:50:14.44 in a marvelous, amazing way on that 00:50:14.48\00:50:15.81 on the day of Pentecost. 00:50:15.84\00:50:17.61 But notice the beautiful exposition 00:50:17.65\00:50:21.05 that we have here from Paul. 00:50:21.08\00:50:22.82 Paul is going to tell us 00:50:22.85\00:50:24.39 not only who we're going to get this wisdom from 00:50:24.42\00:50:27.62 but he's going to expound in how it's going to come about 00:50:27.66\00:50:29.82 and the significance and importance of that. 00:50:29.86\00:50:31.79 So we're in, again, 1 Corinthians Chapter 2, 00:50:31.83\00:50:34.76 and we're going to read verses, 00:50:34.80\00:50:37.63 well, let's just start with verse 1. 00:50:37.67\00:50:39.63 And we're going to continue through, 00:50:39.67\00:50:41.00 we'll see how far we go. 00:50:41.04\00:50:42.37 So 1 Corinthians 2:1, 00:50:42.40\00:50:44.97 I love how Paul starts this out. 00:50:45.01\00:50:46.64 Again, he's speaking to the Corinthian church. 00:50:46.68\00:50:49.24 And he says, "And, brethren, when I came to you, 00:50:49.28\00:50:51.65 I did not come with excellence of speech 00:50:51.68\00:50:54.48 or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. 00:50:54.52\00:50:57.85 For I determined not to know anything among you 00:50:57.89\00:51:00.56 except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 00:51:00.59\00:51:04.16 I was with you in weakness, in fear, 00:51:04.19\00:51:06.96 and in much trembling. 00:51:07.00\00:51:08.33 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words 00:51:08.36\00:51:12.53 of human wisdom 00:51:12.57\00:51:13.90 but in demonstration, "I love this next part," 00:51:13.94\00:51:16.54 of the spirit and of power 00:51:16.57\00:51:19.37 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men 00:51:19.41\00:51:22.68 but of the power of God. 00:51:22.71\00:51:24.18 And he's going to confirm with that power of God 00:51:24.21\00:51:26.08 in just a moment is, 00:51:26.11\00:51:27.62 you can imagine, it's the Holy Spirit, 00:51:27.65\00:51:29.52 but I love how he starts to sound. 00:51:29.55\00:51:30.89 He's like, "Look, guys, I didn't come to you at first 00:51:30.92\00:51:32.89 with all of these clever words and, 00:51:32.92\00:51:34.92 you know, all of this special language, 00:51:34.96\00:51:37.09 you know, given you all of these deep themes 00:51:37.13\00:51:38.83 and deep elements, 00:51:38.86\00:51:40.20 this way beyond your understanding, 00:51:40.23\00:51:41.63 I can't deal with just the simplistic power 00:51:41.66\00:51:44.17 of the gospel." 00:51:44.20\00:51:45.53 Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 00:51:45.57\00:51:47.10 And that's why it always baffles me 00:51:47.14\00:51:48.47 that people want to go out with witnessing, 00:51:48.50\00:51:50.64 hey, praise the Lord, for witnessing. 00:51:50.67\00:51:52.01 We need to witness, 00:51:52.04\00:51:53.38 we needed to share the gospel of Jesus, 00:51:53.41\00:51:54.74 but we need to meet people on their level. 00:51:54.78\00:51:56.24 And Paul understood that. 00:51:56.28\00:51:57.61 He understood that come into the Corinthian church 00:51:57.65\00:51:59.11 that these people, 00:51:59.15\00:52:00.48 most of them had never even heard of Jesus, 00:52:00.52\00:52:01.85 they don't even know the gospel, 00:52:01.88\00:52:03.22 they don't know that they have a savior. 00:52:03.25\00:52:04.59 And so he's saying, 00:52:04.62\00:52:05.95 "Look, I came to you like this at first 00:52:05.99\00:52:07.39 so I could give you 00:52:07.42\00:52:08.76 the simplistic elements of the gospel, 00:52:08.79\00:52:10.56 Jesus Christ and Him crucified." 00:52:10.59\00:52:12.19 That's the foundation. 00:52:12.23\00:52:13.56 That's the core. 00:52:13.60\00:52:14.93 But does he stop there? 00:52:14.96\00:52:16.30 He doesn't stop there. 00:52:16.33\00:52:17.67 Notice what he continues on this is verse 6. 00:52:17.70\00:52:19.90 He says, "However," 00:52:19.93\00:52:21.27 in fact, this is that love that, 00:52:21.30\00:52:22.64 however, 00:52:22.67\00:52:24.01 because he had some response to what he just said. 00:52:24.04\00:52:25.37 "However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, 00:52:25.41\00:52:30.38 yet not the wisdom of this age, not the rulers of this age, 00:52:30.41\00:52:33.48 who are coming to nothing, 00:52:33.52\00:52:35.28 but we speak the wisdom of God 00:52:35.32\00:52:38.52 in a mystery, the hidden wisdom," 00:52:38.55\00:52:41.09 now we're getting deep, 00:52:41.12\00:52:42.46 some deep language here, 00:52:42.49\00:52:43.83 "which God ordained before the ages of our glory, 00:52:43.86\00:52:46.49 which none of the rulers of this age knew, 00:52:46.53\00:52:48.86 for have they known, 00:52:48.90\00:52:50.23 they would not have crucified the Lord God." 00:52:50.27\00:52:52.33 You know, it says that these people rejected 00:52:52.37\00:52:54.10 the simplicity of the gospel, 00:52:54.14\00:52:57.24 they wouldn't have probably crucified Jesus 00:52:57.27\00:52:59.11 had they known the deep wisdom 00:52:59.14\00:53:00.94 and the wonderful, hidden wisdoms of God, 00:53:00.98\00:53:03.55 but He's going to tell us 00:53:03.58\00:53:04.91 how this is going to come about. 00:53:04.95\00:53:06.28 Okay. 00:53:06.31\00:53:07.65 He's going to tell us here in verse 10, 00:53:07.68\00:53:09.02 notice how these deep wisdom has come 00:53:09.05\00:53:10.49 now that you've matured in the Lord. 00:53:10.52\00:53:12.02 He's saying, "Now that now that you've grown, 00:53:12.05\00:53:13.86 now that you've become more mature 00:53:13.89\00:53:15.76 in the Gospel of Jesus, 00:53:15.79\00:53:17.13 God doesn't want to stop the education." 00:53:17.16\00:53:20.30 You continue to learn, you continue to grow. 00:53:20.33\00:53:22.50 That's why it always amazes me. 00:53:22.53\00:53:23.87 I run into people all the time, and they have this spirit, 00:53:23.90\00:53:26.23 pastor, you've met people like this, 00:53:26.27\00:53:28.50 and it breaks my heart to see people reach a point 00:53:28.54\00:53:31.01 in their relationship with the Lord, 00:53:31.04\00:53:32.77 where they feel like, "I've got it all. 00:53:32.81\00:53:34.58 I've got enough knowledge. 00:53:34.61\00:53:36.44 I've got enough wisdom. 00:53:36.48\00:53:37.91 There's nothing else for me to learn." 00:53:37.95\00:53:39.78 And so right here in verse 10, 00:53:39.81\00:53:41.88 Paul is going to confirm, 00:53:41.92\00:53:43.25 "No, no, no, your education doesn't stop. 00:53:43.28\00:53:44.75 God has more deep, wonderful things 00:53:44.79\00:53:47.69 that He wants to teach you. 00:53:47.72\00:53:49.06 But how is that going to come? 00:53:49.09\00:53:50.43 Verse 10, he says, 00:53:50.46\00:53:51.79 "But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit, 00:53:51.83\00:53:55.73 for the Spirit searches all things," 00:53:55.76\00:53:57.93 yes, here it is, "the deep things of God." 00:53:57.97\00:54:02.37 So it's the guidance of the spirit 00:54:02.40\00:54:04.04 that when he joined 00:54:04.07\00:54:05.41 when we are joined together with the Holy Spirit 00:54:05.44\00:54:07.01 and the Holy Spirit is now leading and guiding us. 00:54:07.04\00:54:09.68 We learn more, we grow in that wisdom 00:54:09.71\00:54:11.91 as Christ did in wisdom and stature, 00:54:11.95\00:54:13.92 in knowledge, we grow expand in the education 00:54:13.95\00:54:17.89 by the Holy Spirit's guidance. 00:54:17.92\00:54:19.39 And this is drastically important 00:54:19.42\00:54:20.76 even today. 00:54:20.79\00:54:22.12 We're talking about the early Christian Church. 00:54:22.16\00:54:23.49 But this is just as important today 00:54:23.53\00:54:25.39 as it was for them back then for us today. 00:54:25.43\00:54:28.56 Because in Revelation 12:17, 00:54:28.60\00:54:30.47 we're told of how God has the people, 00:54:30.50\00:54:32.97 some saints that are being attacked 00:54:33.00\00:54:35.47 by the enemy, the devil, 00:54:35.50\00:54:37.14 and he's making war with those people 00:54:37.17\00:54:39.17 who keep the commandments of God 00:54:39.21\00:54:40.54 and have the testimony of Jesus. 00:54:40.58\00:54:42.38 But here's what's amazing. 00:54:42.41\00:54:43.75 The testimony of Jesus according to Revelation 19:10 00:54:43.78\00:54:46.58 is the Spirit of Prophecy. 00:54:46.61\00:54:49.58 God wants to not just teach you, 00:54:49.62\00:54:51.75 you know, the deep wisdoms of His character 00:54:51.79\00:54:53.56 and his knowledge 00:54:53.59\00:54:54.92 but he wants to expound to you 00:54:54.96\00:54:56.29 even more the deep prophetic elements 00:54:56.32\00:54:58.39 and understanding of what's going to happen to 00:54:58.43\00:54:59.79 in the last days that, my friends, 00:54:59.83\00:55:01.16 how's it going to come? 00:55:01.20\00:55:02.53 It's going to come by the Spirit of the Lord. 00:55:02.56\00:55:03.90 If you don't have the Holy Spirit 00:55:03.93\00:55:05.27 dwelling in you, 00:55:05.30\00:55:06.63 to teach you and to guide you, 00:55:06.67\00:55:08.00 how are you going to be prepared 00:55:08.04\00:55:09.37 for the soon coming to Jesus? 00:55:09.40\00:55:10.74 And that's the whole thing that Paul is mentioning here. 00:55:10.77\00:55:12.87 I'm not going to be able to read all of this. 00:55:12.91\00:55:14.24 But I want to get down here to this last part, verse 16, 00:55:14.28\00:55:17.25 because he uses the quotation from Isaiah. 00:55:17.28\00:55:21.02 And notice what he says here. 00:55:21.05\00:55:22.38 And by the way, this comes from Isaiah 40:30, 00:55:22.42\00:55:25.29 he's quoting Isaiah but notice, Paul adds something. 00:55:25.32\00:55:28.62 He says, "For who has known the mind of the Lord 00:55:28.66\00:55:30.99 that he may instruct him. 00:55:31.03\00:55:33.16 "According to Isaiah, Isaiah said, 00:55:33.19\00:55:34.66 "That's impossible, nobody can do that." 00:55:34.70\00:55:37.17 But now who knows the mind of the Lord? 00:55:37.20\00:55:39.53 Paul adds, he clarifies it now, notice what he says, 00:55:39.57\00:55:42.37 "but we have the mind of Christ." 00:55:42.40\00:55:47.24 That's why I always love 2 Peter 1:19-21 00:55:47.28\00:55:50.91 because it reminds us that when we pick up this word, 00:55:50.95\00:55:53.92 and we read all of the beautiful pages, 00:55:53.95\00:55:55.78 and all the beautiful messages, 00:55:55.82\00:55:57.15 and even the deep prophetic things 00:55:57.19\00:55:58.79 of Scripture. 00:55:58.82\00:56:00.16 It's coming 00:56:00.19\00:56:01.52 from the Holy Spirit of the Lord. 00:56:01.56\00:56:02.89 He's our teacher. 00:56:02.92\00:56:04.26 He's our educator, and we should listen. 00:56:04.29\00:56:05.63 Amen. 00:56:05.66\00:56:07.00 You know, I'm just sitting here as all
