Almost 31. Wow. 00:03:22.93\00:03:24.87 Good to have you here today, man of the Word. 00:03:24.90\00:03:27.10 And we thank you for tuning is taking the time. 00:03:27.14\00:03:30.77 Would you have prayer for us today, John? 00:03:30.81\00:03:32.44 Sure. Okay, let's do that. 00:03:32.47\00:03:34.98 Our loving Heavenly Father, we are grateful to You, Lord, 00:03:35.01\00:03:38.28 because You have given us this day of life. 00:03:38.31\00:03:41.45 We are grateful to You, Lord, 00:03:41.48\00:03:42.88 because we can open the scriptures 00:03:42.92\00:03:45.62 with the confidence 00:03:45.65\00:03:46.99 that Your Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. 00:03:47.02\00:03:50.19 So we ask for Your Holy Spirit, 00:03:50.23\00:03:52.49 that You may use us 00:03:52.53\00:03:53.86 according to Your good pleasure. 00:03:53.90\00:03:55.23 We also ask that You will bless everyone that is joining us. 00:03:55.26\00:03:57.90 Help them also to understand and see wonderful things 00:03:57.93\00:04:02.07 in Your scriptures. 00:04:02.10\00:04:04.14 In Jesus' name. Amen. 00:04:04.17\00:04:05.71 Amen. Amen. 00:04:05.74\00:04:07.84 We all worship something. 00:04:07.88\00:04:09.94 Now years ago, I used to say if you wanna find out 00:04:09.98\00:04:12.25 what people worship, look at their checkbook, 00:04:12.28\00:04:14.85 but who use checkbooks anymore? 00:04:14.88\00:04:17.82 Some people still do. 00:04:17.85\00:04:19.49 Once in a while somebody might say to me, 00:04:19.52\00:04:22.12 write me a check. 00:04:22.16\00:04:23.66 And that sends me into a tailspin 00:04:23.69\00:04:25.89 because I'm starting to forget what a checkbook looks like, 00:04:25.93\00:04:29.00 but if you wanna find out what people worship, 00:04:29.03\00:04:30.87 maybe you might look at their credit card statement 00:04:30.90\00:04:33.54 or maybe you might look at their phones 00:04:33.57\00:04:36.57 to see there's a new thing on Apple. 00:04:36.60\00:04:39.47 Many of you probably know about this. 00:04:39.51\00:04:41.51 It's called Screen Time, 00:04:41.54\00:04:43.88 and will tell you how long you've been 00:04:43.91\00:04:45.35 on a particular app on your phone. 00:04:45.38\00:04:47.78 And I would hate to say 00:04:47.82\00:04:49.68 that if you look at some people's phones 00:04:49.72\00:04:51.85 that have that feature turned on 00:04:51.89\00:04:53.25 you'll say, "Ah! 00:04:53.29\00:04:55.72 They've in Facebook 00:04:55.76\00:04:57.29 a lot longer they've been 00:04:57.33\00:04:58.66 in their Bible Ellen White app." 00:04:58.69\00:05:01.00 Something always pulls our attention. 00:05:01.03\00:05:03.90 And it tends to take precedence over the place 00:05:03.93\00:05:07.17 that belongs to the Lord alone. 00:05:07.20\00:05:09.67 Our memory text is in 1 Chronicles 16:29. 00:05:09.70\00:05:13.94 I'll read that in your hearing, if you'd like to join us there. 00:05:13.98\00:05:17.21 This is a beautiful passage. 00:05:17.25\00:05:19.31 The Bible tells us in 1 Chronicles 16:29, 00:05:19.35\00:05:23.25 "Give to the Lord the glory due His name, 00:05:23.28\00:05:28.42 bring an offering, and come before Him. 00:05:28.46\00:05:32.03 Oh, worship the Lord in the," what panel? 00:05:32.06\00:05:35.23 Beauty. 00:05:35.26\00:05:36.60 "Beauty of holiness." 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.10 For whatever reason, 00:05:39.13\00:05:40.47 Satan has tried to paint holiness as an ugly thing, 00:05:40.50\00:05:43.87 or worship as a terrible thing. 00:05:43.91\00:05:46.78 Sometimes people approach worship 00:05:46.81\00:05:48.34 as what do I have to give up? 00:05:48.38\00:05:50.81 Well, when you recognize 00:05:50.85\00:05:52.38 that the greatest beauty and greatest joy 00:05:52.41\00:05:55.05 is in the experience of worship, 00:05:55.08\00:05:57.25 it is something you'd wanna haste to, 00:05:57.29\00:05:59.49 something you'd wanna do with an exuberance 00:05:59.52\00:06:02.92 and a joy looking forward to it. 00:06:02.96\00:06:05.19 When you look at the Jewish culture, 00:06:05.23\00:06:07.30 they would prepare for Sabbath worship, 00:06:07.33\00:06:09.43 and they would begin on Wednesday. 00:06:09.46\00:06:11.57 So they wouldn't wait till Friday, 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.13 the preparation day, 00:06:13.17\00:06:14.50 they would be done by the preparation day 00:06:14.54\00:06:16.30 because they literally celebrated 00:06:16.34\00:06:19.04 the Sabbath, Sabbath worship. 00:06:19.07\00:06:21.64 People today tend to decide 00:06:21.68\00:06:24.01 to pick the day they wanna worship, 00:06:24.05\00:06:26.05 but the reality of it is, 00:06:26.08\00:06:27.42 we'll find it in a newer translation 00:06:27.45\00:06:30.25 of a particular book, 00:06:30.29\00:06:31.62 I'll share with you in a moment here, 00:06:31.65\00:06:32.99 that worship is not something 00:06:33.02\00:06:34.36 that happens on a only on a particular day, 00:06:34.39\00:06:36.66 but when you become a Christian, 00:06:36.69\00:06:38.06 you're worshiping the Lord all the time. 00:06:38.09\00:06:41.16 Everything you do is an act of worship 00:06:41.20\00:06:42.76 towards the Lord, 00:06:42.80\00:06:44.20 but I wanna share with you worship in the noun sense 00:06:44.23\00:06:47.17 and in the verb sense. 00:06:47.20\00:06:48.67 In the noun, worship is the feeling 00:06:48.70\00:06:51.21 or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity, 00:06:51.24\00:06:56.21 the freedom the feeling or expression of reverence 00:06:56.24\00:06:59.55 and adoration for a deity. 00:06:59.58\00:07:01.48 And so, yes, it should bring a sense of awe and reverence 00:07:01.52\00:07:06.86 when we are in the presence of the Lord, 00:07:06.89\00:07:09.12 but feeling shouldn't be the primary focus. 00:07:09.16\00:07:11.93 Sometimes people make feeling the primary focus, 00:07:11.96\00:07:14.83 and they would listen to a message 00:07:14.86\00:07:16.20 that's replete 00:07:16.23\00:07:17.57 with beautiful examples of Christ 00:07:17.60\00:07:19.43 and what we should do, 00:07:19.47\00:07:20.80 but some people say, "Well, I didn't feel that." 00:07:20.84\00:07:22.77 Well, the caution is, 00:07:22.80\00:07:24.14 while the word feeling is included in this definition, 00:07:24.17\00:07:27.38 don't allow feeling to be the primary focus 00:07:27.41\00:07:29.78 of your worship. 00:07:29.81\00:07:31.15 The verb is also to show reverence and adoration 00:07:31.18\00:07:35.08 for a deity through a religious ritual, 00:07:35.12\00:07:38.22 and that ritual will be worship. 00:07:38.25\00:07:40.26 Worship is a part of humanity, 00:07:40.29\00:07:41.86 it's a part of everybody's life. 00:07:41.89\00:07:43.73 It's a part of human nature. 00:07:43.76\00:07:45.49 Everybody has something that naturally draws them, 00:07:45.53\00:07:48.56 but wrongly understood 00:07:48.60\00:07:51.13 it could draw them to something 00:07:51.17\00:07:52.73 that they might consider worship, 00:07:52.77\00:07:54.20 when in fact, it's just an addiction. 00:07:54.24\00:07:56.44 Some people do things out of what they call 00:07:56.47\00:07:59.11 a repetitious clock. 00:07:59.14\00:08:00.74 Some people go to church, because their parents did, 00:08:00.78\00:08:02.84 and their parents, parents did, and so on and so forth, 00:08:02.88\00:08:05.31 but they never make a connection to the one 00:08:05.35\00:08:06.95 that they're supposed to worship. 00:08:06.98\00:08:08.55 So some people know their doctrines back and forth, 00:08:08.58\00:08:10.99 even in our church 28 fundamentals, 00:08:11.02\00:08:13.62 some people can recite them back and forth, 00:08:13.66\00:08:15.72 but they've never come to the place 00:08:15.76\00:08:17.29 where they are beyond intellect 00:08:17.33\00:08:19.69 to where their heart is filled 00:08:19.73\00:08:21.06 with a desire to worship the Lord. 00:08:21.10\00:08:23.16 Worship, another definition is whatever we love the most, 00:08:23.20\00:08:27.40 whatever we focus on the most 00:08:27.44\00:08:29.60 and give our attention to the most, 00:08:29.64\00:08:31.14 whatever we live for that is what we worship, 00:08:31.17\00:08:35.04 but when you look at the Bible worship is mentioned 197 times 00:08:35.08\00:08:38.25 in varying ways of worship, worshiping. 00:08:38.28\00:08:40.82 And I thought, "Wow, that's a lot." 00:08:40.85\00:08:42.75 You find that worship is a very primary thing, 00:08:42.78\00:08:45.12 but go to Genesis 22:5-8, 00:08:45.15\00:08:47.09 and I'll show you 00:08:47.12\00:08:48.46 one of the core truths about worship. 00:08:48.49\00:08:50.39 It's found 00:08:50.43\00:08:51.76 in the very first reference of worship in the Bible, 00:08:51.79\00:08:54.83 one of the first references about worship, 00:08:54.86\00:08:56.97 the core truth about worship is listed here. 00:08:57.00\00:08:59.97 Verse 5 of Genesis 22, 00:09:00.00\00:09:02.37 it speaks about Abraham and Isaac. 00:09:02.40\00:09:04.44 "And Abraham said to his young men, 00:09:04.47\00:09:07.51 'Stay here with the donkey.'" 00:09:07.54\00:09:08.88 By the way, the Lord impressed him 00:09:08.91\00:09:10.25 to go ahead and sacrifice his son Isaac. 00:09:10.28\00:09:12.38 So he's journeying now 00:09:12.41\00:09:14.05 to this place where the Lord told him to go, 00:09:14.08\00:09:16.28 he's going now to the place of sacrifice. 00:09:16.32\00:09:19.35 And the Bible says, 00:09:19.39\00:09:21.32 "The lad and I will go yonder and worship, 00:09:21.36\00:09:26.56 and we will come back to you.' 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.96 So Abraham took the wood and the burnt offering 00:09:29.00\00:09:32.60 and laid it on Isaac his son, 00:09:32.63\00:09:35.50 and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, 00:09:35.54\00:09:38.74 and the two of them went together. 00:09:38.77\00:09:40.54 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, 00:09:40.58\00:09:43.04 'My father!' 00:09:43.08\00:09:44.41 And he said, 'Here I am my son.' 00:09:44.45\00:09:47.45 Then he said, 'Look, the fire and the wood, 00:09:47.48\00:09:50.89 but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?' " 00:09:50.92\00:09:54.16 And I love this. 00:09:54.19\00:09:55.52 "And Abraham said, 00:09:55.56\00:09:56.89 'My Son, God will provide for Himself 00:09:56.93\00:10:00.10 the lamb for a burnt offering.' 00:10:00.13\00:10:02.50 So the two went together.'" 00:10:02.53\00:10:05.47 When I look at this, 00:10:05.50\00:10:06.87 what I discovered and the Lord impressed me 00:10:06.90\00:10:09.00 as I studied this verse. 00:10:09.04\00:10:10.41 Sacrifice always precedes worship. 00:10:10.44\00:10:17.05 Worship that does not have a price 00:10:17.08\00:10:19.98 will not yield any interest. 00:10:20.02\00:10:22.28 Worship that does not cost you something 00:10:22.32\00:10:24.69 will not yield any interest. 00:10:24.72\00:10:26.52 So in this particular story, 00:10:26.55\00:10:28.02 the Lord wanted to see 00:10:28.06\00:10:29.39 how far Abraham was willing to go 00:10:29.42\00:10:31.39 to prove 00:10:31.43\00:10:32.76 that he was willing to worship 00:10:32.79\00:10:34.13 the Lord at any cost. 00:10:34.16\00:10:36.90 And that's the key. 00:10:36.93\00:10:38.27 And this is vital today because a lot of people say, 00:10:38.30\00:10:40.34 "Well, I would worship on the Sabbath, 00:10:40.37\00:10:42.10 but I have to go to work, but I have a class, 00:10:42.14\00:10:45.57 but it's my most convenient day to shop." 00:10:45.61\00:10:48.68 It doesn't cost them anything. 00:10:48.71\00:10:50.45 So what doesn't cost you anything 00:10:50.48\00:10:52.58 brings no interest to you and really no interest to God. 00:10:52.61\00:10:56.25 Worship requires the willingness 00:10:56.28\00:10:58.19 to surrender the thing that is nearest to your heart. 00:10:58.22\00:11:01.59 And that's what the Lord was testing 00:11:01.62\00:11:02.96 Abraham about. 00:11:02.99\00:11:04.33 Look at Luke 14:26-27 00:11:04.36\00:11:08.16 and this is what the Lord meant 00:11:08.20\00:11:09.73 when He said this to His disciples. 00:11:09.76\00:11:11.57 He was measuring their willingness 00:11:11.60\00:11:13.90 to worship Him, it always comes as a cost. 00:11:13.94\00:11:18.24 Luke 14:26-27, 00:11:18.27\00:11:20.38 "If anyone comes to Me 00:11:20.41\00:11:21.74 and does not hate his father and mother, 00:11:21.78\00:11:24.28 wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, 00:11:24.31\00:11:27.35 and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 00:11:27.38\00:11:30.55 And whoever does not bear his cross 00:11:30.59\00:11:32.35 and come after Me cannot be My disciple." 00:11:32.39\00:11:35.62 You know, David Foster said, David Foster Wallace says, 00:11:35.66\00:11:38.99 "If you worship the wrong thing, 00:11:39.03\00:11:41.90 it will eat you alive." 00:11:41.93\00:11:44.53 It's a powerful statement, 00:11:44.57\00:11:45.90 "If you worship the wrong thing, 00:11:45.93\00:11:47.57 it will eat you alive." 00:11:47.60\00:11:49.04 If we worship the wrong thing, it will eat us alive. 00:11:49.07\00:11:52.51 It will be filled with us, it'll ingest and digest us, 00:11:52.54\00:11:56.71 but if we worship the true God, we will be filled with Him. 00:11:56.75\00:12:01.78 There's a difference altogether, 00:12:01.82\00:12:03.15 what you want to be filled with. 00:12:03.18\00:12:04.59 Also worship has to come at the risk 00:12:04.62\00:12:07.96 of even giving away your life. 00:12:07.99\00:12:10.06 Look at Daniel 3:18, 00:12:10.09\00:12:12.16 don't allow anything that wants to rob your worship, 00:12:12.19\00:12:16.56 to penetrate the sphere that belongs only to the Lord. 00:12:16.60\00:12:20.20 When Daniel, 00:12:20.24\00:12:21.57 when the Hebrews were at the most fragile place 00:12:21.60\00:12:23.64 in their worship, 00:12:23.67\00:12:25.01 notice how they responded 00:12:25.04\00:12:26.51 to the king who demanded of them 00:12:26.54\00:12:28.14 to bow and worship an image. 00:12:28.18\00:12:30.88 Daniel 3:18, 00:12:30.91\00:12:32.31 he talked about God is able to deliver us, 00:12:32.35\00:12:34.32 but he said, "But if not, 00:12:34.35\00:12:36.15 but if not, let it be known to you, 00:12:36.18\00:12:38.09 O king, that we do not serve your gods, 00:12:38.12\00:12:41.06 nor will we worship 00:12:41.09\00:12:43.06 the gold image which you have set up." 00:12:43.09\00:12:46.29 And, friends, today, 00:12:46.33\00:12:47.66 something is gonna try to erect itself in your life 00:12:47.70\00:12:50.13 as an image of worship. 00:12:50.17\00:12:51.63 It could be television, it could be media, 00:12:51.67\00:12:53.13 it could be your iPad, some people, 00:12:53.17\00:12:55.10 their phones are a lot closer than their Bibles. 00:12:55.14\00:12:57.91 They grope in the dark for their Bibles, 00:12:57.94\00:12:59.47 but they can grab their phones at an instance. 00:12:59.51\00:13:02.04 And that's why I always recommend 00:13:02.08\00:13:03.41 to put your Bible closer to your bed 00:13:03.45\00:13:04.78 than your phone. 00:13:04.81\00:13:06.15 So when you wake up in the morning, 00:13:06.18\00:13:07.52 and you reach for anything, there it is. 00:13:07.55\00:13:09.42 Get the living Word 00:13:09.45\00:13:11.22 before you get the news of the day, 00:13:11.25\00:13:12.92 the latest gossip and put that as the doorposts, 00:13:12.95\00:13:16.66 put that as the bar 00:13:16.69\00:13:18.03 from all the other things to come in, 00:13:18.06\00:13:19.79 but in the interest of time, I wanna go to Romans 12:1-2, 00:13:19.83\00:13:24.27 worship can only occur within the parameters 00:13:24.30\00:13:26.87 of transformation and not confirmation 00:13:26.90\00:13:30.91 without a renewed mind and heart, 00:13:30.94\00:13:32.54 worship will always elude us. 00:13:32.57\00:13:35.28 I'm reading this in the NIV, 00:13:35.31\00:13:36.64 I love the way it translates it here. 00:13:36.68\00:13:38.55 Romans 12:1-2. 00:13:38.58\00:13:40.55 Paul says, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, 00:13:40.58\00:13:43.75 in view of God's mercy, 00:13:43.79\00:13:45.59 to offer your bodies a living sacrifice, " 00:13:45.62\00:13:48.86 same thing Isaac and Abraham learned 00:13:48.89\00:13:51.43 a living sacrifice, 00:13:51.46\00:13:52.86 "holy and pleasing to God," 00:13:52.89\00:13:54.73 I love the way, 00:13:54.76\00:13:56.10 "this is your spiritual act of worship." 00:13:56.13\00:13:59.50 NIV. 00:13:59.53\00:14:00.87 This is your spiritual act of worship, 00:14:00.90\00:14:02.54 presenting your body, your mind, 00:14:02.57\00:14:04.01 your heart to the Lord every day. 00:14:04.04\00:14:05.37 This is your spiritual act of worship, 00:14:05.41\00:14:06.74 and then when you do that, 00:14:06.78\00:14:08.58 "Do not be conform 00:14:08.61\00:14:09.94 any longer to the pattern of this world, 00:14:09.98\00:14:12.38 but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. 00:14:12.41\00:14:15.08 Then you will be able to test and approve what is God's will, 00:14:15.12\00:14:19.05 His good, pleasing and perfect will." 00:14:19.09\00:14:21.62 That's where worship begins. 00:14:21.66\00:14:23.16 Amen. Jill. 00:14:23.19\00:14:24.53 Thank you, Pastor John, 00:14:24.56\00:14:25.89 what an incredible lesson, worship. 00:14:25.93\00:14:27.86 That's right. 00:14:27.90\00:14:29.23 This entire life is all about worship. 00:14:29.26\00:14:32.33 The conflict at the end is all about worship, 00:14:32.37\00:14:34.74 who will we serve? 00:14:34.77\00:14:36.10 And as parents and grandparents and teachers, 00:14:36.14\00:14:40.78 it's important to teach your children and grandchildren 00:14:40.81\00:14:44.18 who they need to worship. 00:14:44.21\00:14:46.31 That's what my day is about. 00:14:46.35\00:14:47.92 And Declare Them to Their Children 00:14:47.95\00:14:51.02 which is really training your children, 00:14:51.05\00:14:53.42 teaching your children, 00:14:53.46\00:14:54.92 instructing them 00:14:54.96\00:14:56.52 to have a relationship with Jesus, 00:14:56.56\00:14:58.26 teaching them about Jesus. 00:14:58.29\00:15:00.06 Teaching them His Word, 00:15:00.10\00:15:01.83 His law that's what this day is about. 00:15:01.86\00:15:04.27 We're gonna go to Psalms, but before we go there, 00:15:04.30\00:15:06.80 let's look at Deuteronomy 8. 00:15:06.84\00:15:09.14 Deuteronomy, sorry, Deuteronomy 11:18. 00:15:09.17\00:15:13.71 That's where the eight came in, Deuteronomy 11:18, 00:15:13.74\00:15:16.95 and then we'll go to the Psalm, 00:15:16.98\00:15:18.31 which was what we had for our lesson today. 00:15:18.35\00:15:20.78 Deuteronomy 11:18, 00:15:20.82\00:15:22.78 "Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine 00:15:22.82\00:15:25.85 in your heart and in your soul, 00:15:25.89\00:15:27.99 and bind them as the sign on your hand, 00:15:28.02\00:15:30.06 and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 00:15:30.09\00:15:32.96 You shall teach them to your children, 00:15:32.99\00:15:35.40 speaking of them when you sit in the house, 00:15:35.43\00:15:37.27 when you walk by the way, when you lie down, 00:15:37.30\00:15:39.27 and when you rise up. 00:15:39.30\00:15:41.30 And you should write them on the doorposts of your house 00:15:41.34\00:15:43.57 and on your gates, 00:15:43.61\00:15:44.94 that your days and the days of your children 00:15:44.97\00:15:46.34 may be multiplied 00:15:46.37\00:15:47.71 in the land of which the Lord swore 00:15:47.74\00:15:49.24 to your fathers to give them, 00:15:49.28\00:15:50.81 like the days of the heavens above the earth." 00:15:50.85\00:15:53.01 We are called, now Greg and I are not parents, 00:15:53.05\00:15:55.98 but parents especially, 00:15:56.02\00:15:58.62 are called or mothers or fathers in Israel, 00:15:58.65\00:16:02.62 who can offer instruction to other young people, 00:16:02.66\00:16:06.49 or older woman instructing the younger, 00:16:06.53\00:16:09.03 or older men instructing the younger 00:16:09.06\00:16:10.67 or teachers, 00:16:10.70\00:16:12.03 we all have people that we have influence over, 00:16:12.07\00:16:14.90 teaching them all day, every day, every opportunity, 00:16:14.94\00:16:20.68 opening up the Word of God to them. 00:16:20.71\00:16:23.45 So the lesson talks about Psalms 00:16:23.48\00:16:26.48 and the importance of Psalms in ancient Israel. 00:16:26.51\00:16:29.75 Psalms, of course, it's just poetry 00:16:29.78\00:16:31.42 that was set to music, 00:16:31.45\00:16:33.72 you could say sacred poems that were meant to be sung 00:16:33.76\00:16:37.13 used often with the children of Israel 00:16:37.16\00:16:38.99 during times of worship, Pastor John. 00:16:39.03\00:16:42.53 There's, of course, 150 Psalms, 00:16:42.56\00:16:44.57 and they were written spanning close to 1,000 years. 00:16:44.60\00:16:48.90 King David wrote most of them, 00:16:48.94\00:16:50.41 but we have several other authors 00:16:50.44\00:16:52.27 in the Book of Psalms as well. 00:16:52.31\00:16:54.51 There's many different Psalm types, 00:16:54.54\00:16:56.48 you could say. 00:16:56.51\00:16:57.85 There's individual and community prayers for help. 00:16:57.88\00:17:01.08 There's individual and community prayers 00:17:01.12\00:17:03.32 of thanksgiving and praise. 00:17:03.35\00:17:06.12 There's hymns honoring God as our Creator and as our King. 00:17:06.15\00:17:10.23 There's songs of trust, and songs of Zion, 00:17:10.26\00:17:13.29 there is royal songs and pilgrimage songs, 00:17:13.33\00:17:16.56 and liturgies or rituals for public worship. 00:17:16.60\00:17:20.74 There is Torah Psalms, 00:17:20.77\00:17:22.87 and the Psalms covers an incredible theme, 00:17:22.90\00:17:25.84 incredible range of themes. 00:17:25.87\00:17:28.18 There's a worthiness of God as our Creator 00:17:28.21\00:17:30.65 and Judge and Savior 00:17:30.68\00:17:32.01 and Redeemer and Sustainer and Healer, 00:17:32.05\00:17:34.48 Refuge and Shepherd. 00:17:34.52\00:17:36.22 There's great cries for deliverance. 00:17:36.25\00:17:38.12 I know when I need that, 00:17:38.15\00:17:39.65 I open up and read something that David wrote, 00:17:39.69\00:17:42.32 these cries for deliverance are vindication. 00:17:42.36\00:17:45.63 There's sorrow for sin and confession of sin, 00:17:45.66\00:17:48.53 discussion of the law, the coming Messiah, 00:17:48.56\00:17:50.90 the righteous and the wicked, the Sabbath, 00:17:50.93\00:17:53.40 the heavenly and earthly sanctuary, 00:17:53.44\00:17:55.07 salvation and suffering, 00:17:55.10\00:17:56.44 the Book of Psalms covers it all, 00:17:56.47\00:17:59.17 but we're going to Psalm Chapter 78. 00:17:59.21\00:18:02.48 Psalm 78, 00:18:02.51\00:18:03.85 and that's the Psalm we're focusing on 00:18:03.88\00:18:05.45 in today's lesson. 00:18:05.48\00:18:06.88 Of course, Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm, 00:18:06.92\00:18:09.78 but 78 is the second longest Psalm. 00:18:09.82\00:18:13.49 And it's written by Asaph, 00:18:13.52\00:18:14.99 who's a contemporary of King David. 00:18:15.02\00:18:17.99 This is really a wisdom Psalm 00:18:18.03\00:18:20.86 that recounts God's mighty acts for His covenant people. 00:18:20.90\00:18:25.20 It starts from Egypt, and the Exodus, 00:18:25.23\00:18:28.14 and it goes all the way down to the time of David. 00:18:28.17\00:18:32.87 We're only gonna focus on the first eight verses, 00:18:32.91\00:18:35.74 which is the call to pass this knowledge, 00:18:35.78\00:18:39.01 this instruction on to future generations. 00:18:39.05\00:18:42.32 That's what 00:18:42.35\00:18:43.69 the first eight verses focus on. 00:18:43.72\00:18:45.69 After that there are some accusations 00:18:45.72\00:18:47.66 against Ephraim or Israel. 00:18:47.69\00:18:49.46 There's this cycle of the wilderness experience 00:18:49.49\00:18:52.09 where they went away from God 00:18:52.13\00:18:53.46 and then God's judgment and mercy. 00:18:53.50\00:18:55.80 That happens twice, and then at the very end, 00:18:55.83\00:18:58.10 it ends with some promises, 00:18:58.13\00:19:00.34 but we're just looking at the first eight verses. 00:19:00.37\00:19:03.54 I call this the call to parents. 00:19:03.57\00:19:07.14 You know, if you think about it, 00:19:07.18\00:19:08.51 in today's society, 00:19:08.54\00:19:09.88 there are many single parent homes, 00:19:09.91\00:19:13.25 and the role of the father is marginalized. 00:19:13.28\00:19:17.45 If you watch any sort of television, 00:19:17.49\00:19:19.55 you look at sitcoms or anything. 00:19:19.59\00:19:21.92 What do you see? 00:19:21.96\00:19:23.29 The father's role is marginalized or made fun of. 00:19:23.32\00:19:28.06 There was a quote I read once, which is horrible, 00:19:28.10\00:19:32.23 but it says this, 00:19:32.27\00:19:33.70 "Fathers are a biological necessity, 00:19:33.74\00:19:36.10 but a psychological absurdity." 00:19:36.14\00:19:38.67 Nothing is further from the truth. 00:19:38.71\00:19:42.78 The role of moms is vitally important, yes, 00:19:42.81\00:19:45.88 but the role of fathers 00:19:45.91\00:19:47.65 is just as important in teaching and educating 00:19:47.68\00:19:52.05 and training children. 00:19:52.09\00:19:54.92 As goes the home so goes the society. 00:19:54.96\00:19:58.33 So the role of parents in the home 00:19:58.36\00:20:00.43 is vitally important. 00:20:00.46\00:20:01.80 So let's look at this call to parents. 00:20:01.83\00:20:03.20 We're in verse 1. 00:20:03.23\00:20:04.57 I divided the call to parents up, 00:20:04.60\00:20:06.53 kind of into three different sections. 00:20:06.57\00:20:08.20 The first section is the invitation to hear 00:20:08.24\00:20:11.11 and understand, 00:20:11.14\00:20:12.47 this is verses 1-3. 00:20:12.51\00:20:14.28 "Give ear, O my people, to my law, 00:20:14.31\00:20:17.51 incline your ears to the words of my mouth." 00:20:17.55\00:20:21.85 Now that word give ear means to hear, 00:20:21.88\00:20:23.95 to listen with understanding, to hearken. 00:20:23.99\00:20:27.96 So pay attention to my law, 00:20:27.99\00:20:30.63 pay attention to what I'm going to share, 00:20:30.66\00:20:32.86 pay attention to the words in the Word of God. 00:20:32.89\00:20:36.63 Now the word incline 00:20:36.67\00:20:38.00 is really interesting in the Hebrew, 00:20:38.03\00:20:40.14 it means to stretch out, to bend or bow, 00:20:40.17\00:20:44.47 literally like a dog or a horse 00:20:44.51\00:20:46.74 that kind of swiveled their ears around 00:20:46.78\00:20:48.31 when you're talking to them, 00:20:48.34\00:20:49.68 you know, they could have their back to you, 00:20:49.71\00:20:51.41 and you call their name at the ear, 00:20:51.45\00:20:53.11 you can tell just the ear turns 00:20:53.15\00:20:54.68 and you think they're listening to me, 00:20:54.72\00:20:56.52 even if they did not turn their head. 00:20:56.55\00:20:59.05 What's it mean? 00:20:59.09\00:21:00.42 We need to lean forward to catch everything 00:21:00.46\00:21:04.39 that God wants to give us. 00:21:04.43\00:21:06.43 Verse 2, "I will open my mouth in a parable, 00:21:06.46\00:21:09.70 I will utter dark sayings of old, 00:21:09.73\00:21:12.20 which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us." 00:21:12.23\00:21:15.64 Now that word dark sayings 00:21:15.67\00:21:17.01 doesn't literally mean dark sayings, 00:21:17.04\00:21:19.14 but it would be a riddle or a perplexing 00:21:19.17\00:21:21.64 saying or question. 00:21:21.68\00:21:23.48 Psalm 78 is a history 00:21:23.51\00:21:25.81 of God's dealing with His people, 00:21:25.85\00:21:29.08 God's faithfulness, His mercy, His love, His grace, 00:21:29.12\00:21:33.09 His judgment. 00:21:33.12\00:21:34.86 And by contrast, we see Israel's unfaithfulness, 00:21:34.89\00:21:38.89 Israel's stubbornness, and Israel's rebellion. 00:21:38.93\00:21:44.73 It's important that we remember the past, 00:21:44.77\00:21:49.14 not that we repeat the mistakes of the past, 00:21:49.17\00:21:52.21 but that we remember the past. 00:21:52.24\00:21:54.94 There's a quote Ellen White makes, 00:21:54.98\00:21:56.31 this is in Life Sketches, page 196, 00:21:56.34\00:21:58.98 I really liked this quote, 00:21:59.01\00:22:00.82 "We have nothing to fear for the future, 00:22:00.85\00:22:02.92 except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, 00:22:02.95\00:22:06.45 and His teaching in our past history." 00:22:06.49\00:22:09.79 It's important for parents to teach their children. 00:22:09.82\00:22:13.53 This is what God has done in our lives in the past. 00:22:13.56\00:22:16.53 This is the way we had seen Him work. 00:22:16.56\00:22:19.27 And this is how we can have faith 00:22:19.30\00:22:20.80 for how He's going to work in our lives in the future. 00:22:20.84\00:22:23.94 The second section is verses 4-5, 00:22:23.97\00:22:26.47 the invitation to teach the children and grandchildren, 00:22:26.51\00:22:30.18 "We will not hide them from their children, 00:22:30.21\00:22:32.71 telling to the generations 00:22:32.75\00:22:34.22 to come the praises of the Lord, 00:22:34.25\00:22:36.89 and His strength and His wonderful works 00:22:36.92\00:22:38.75 that He has done. 00:22:38.79\00:22:40.56 For He established a testimony in Jacob, 00:22:40.59\00:22:42.46 and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, 00:22:42.49\00:22:45.66 that they should make known to their children." 00:22:45.69\00:22:49.36 It is important to communicate truth, 00:22:49.40\00:22:51.13 especially God's Word to our children 00:22:51.17\00:22:54.10 in succeeding generations. 00:22:54.14\00:22:57.21 Don't hide it. Don't forget to speak of it. 00:22:57.24\00:23:00.01 Don't water it down, 00:23:00.04\00:23:01.71 simply speak the Word of God 00:23:01.74\00:23:04.65 into your children's lives. 00:23:04.68\00:23:06.55 And the third section is verses 6-8, 00:23:06.58\00:23:09.48 this is the goal of this instruction, 00:23:09.52\00:23:12.05 "That the generation to come might know them." 00:23:12.09\00:23:14.12 Why do we teach children? 00:23:14.16\00:23:15.49 Why do we teach grandchildren? Why do we do that? 00:23:15.52\00:23:17.79 So that the generation to come might know them, 00:23:17.83\00:23:20.23 they might know the Lord, 00:23:20.26\00:23:21.83 "The children who would be born, 00:23:21.86\00:23:23.73 that they may arise and declare them 00:23:23.77\00:23:25.63 to their children, 00:23:25.67\00:23:27.47 that they may set their hope in God, 00:23:27.50\00:23:29.40 and not forget the works of God, 00:23:29.44\00:23:31.04 but keep His commandments." 00:23:31.07\00:23:32.44 Don't make the mistakes of the past. 00:23:32.47\00:23:35.04 "And may not be like their fathers, 00:23:35.08\00:23:37.35 a stubborn and rebellious generation, 00:23:37.38\00:23:39.91 a generation that did not set its heart aright, 00:23:39.95\00:23:43.22 whose spirit was not faithful to God." 00:23:43.25\00:23:46.52 Future generations need to know the Word of God. 00:23:46.55\00:23:49.76 Future generations need to understand the mercy, 00:23:49.79\00:23:52.83 grace and kindness of God. 00:23:52.86\00:23:55.43 Future generations need to teach this Word 00:23:55.46\00:23:58.33 continually to their children, 00:23:58.37\00:24:00.64 to remember God's goodness to them and to their parents, 00:24:00.67\00:24:03.64 to trust God and to learn to hearken 00:24:03.67\00:24:06.88 to walk in obedience to God's commands. 00:24:06.91\00:24:10.98 What a call is upon parents, 00:24:11.01\00:24:13.42 especially mothers and fathers 00:24:13.45\00:24:15.72 to teach the Word of God to succeeding generations. 00:24:15.75\00:24:20.49 Wow. Thank you, Jill. Amazing. 00:24:20.52\00:24:22.92 When you look back on your life, 00:24:22.96\00:24:24.29 and I look back on my life, 00:24:24.33\00:24:25.66 I could see the greatest impression 00:24:25.69\00:24:27.03 of who I am today, 00:24:27.06\00:24:28.40 started when my parents taught me 00:24:28.43\00:24:30.23 about the Lord, 00:24:30.27\00:24:31.60 specifically the lady that raised me, 00:24:31.63\00:24:33.30 and that's the responsibility each one of us has as a parent, 00:24:33.34\00:24:37.01 but we're gonna go to In Spirit and In Truth 00:24:37.04\00:24:38.84 right after the break 00:24:38.87\00:24:40.21 is gonna be an exciting portion of the lesson. 00:24:40.24\00:24:42.54 Don't go away. 00:27:18.27\00:27:20.00 And just, you could just read into this 00:27:20.04\00:27:21.80 and clearly see 00:27:21.84\00:27:23.17 that this is an awkward encounter 00:27:23.20\00:27:25.01 between her and Jesus, 00:27:25.04\00:27:26.88 but then Jesus begins to tell her 00:27:26.91\00:27:28.24 about this living water. 00:27:28.28\00:27:29.98 He says, "Look because I have a water 00:27:30.01\00:27:31.65 that I can give you, 00:27:31.68\00:27:33.01 that is a living water, you will never thirst again, 00:27:33.05\00:27:35.08 it will change and transform your life." 00:27:35.12\00:27:37.65 And, of course, she begins to inquire 00:27:37.69\00:27:39.92 about this living water. 00:27:39.95\00:27:41.29 And she eventually learns 00:27:41.32\00:27:43.73 that after Jesus reveals Himself to her 00:27:43.76\00:27:46.43 and begins to say things about her life, 00:27:46.46\00:27:49.06 He begins to predict things or not predict things, 00:27:49.10\00:27:50.87 but He begins to tell things about her life, 00:27:50.90\00:27:52.83 then perhaps no one else would know, 00:27:52.87\00:27:54.60 a complete stranger. 00:27:54.64\00:27:56.20 And she recognizes 00:27:56.24\00:27:57.94 that this surely you are a prophet, she says, 00:27:57.97\00:28:00.48 a prophet of Israel, 00:28:00.51\00:28:02.21 but interesting that she quickly diverts 00:28:02.24\00:28:04.68 the conversation to worship. 00:28:04.71\00:28:06.85 And this is the meat of our conversation. 00:28:06.88\00:28:08.72 And I really just went through, 00:28:08.75\00:28:10.09 if you wanna read this story a little bit more clearly, 00:28:10.12\00:28:12.15 go to John Chapter 4 and read from verses 7 00:28:12.19\00:28:14.86 all the way through to about verse 18. 00:28:14.89\00:28:16.83 And that'll kind of give you the background 00:28:16.86\00:28:18.46 of what we're about to talk about, 00:28:18.49\00:28:20.00 but in verse 19, let's pick up there, John 4:19, 00:28:20.03\00:28:25.03 the Bible says, "The woman said to Him, 00:28:25.07\00:28:26.94 'Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 00:28:26.97\00:28:29.00 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, 00:28:29.04\00:28:31.21 and you Jews say 00:28:31.24\00:28:32.57 that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.' 00:28:32.61\00:28:35.51 Jesus said to her, 'Woman, believe Me, 00:28:35.54\00:28:37.88 the hour is coming 00:28:37.91\00:28:39.25 when you will neither on this mountain, 00:28:39.28\00:28:40.72 nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 00:28:40.75\00:28:43.28 You worship what you do not know, 00:28:43.32\00:28:45.49 we know what we worship, 00:28:45.52\00:28:46.92 for salvation is of the Jews." 00:28:46.96\00:28:48.82 Now it kind of sounds like 00:28:48.86\00:28:50.19 Jesus as being a little kind of little selfish, 00:28:50.23\00:28:52.16 a little proud, proud here, that's not the case. 00:28:52.19\00:28:54.66 This is a divine appointment, 00:28:54.70\00:28:56.03 He knows exactly what's happening. 00:28:56.06\00:28:57.57 And He's got a special, special message 00:28:57.60\00:28:59.63 He wants to share with her. 00:28:59.67\00:29:01.00 So notice what happens in verse 23. 00:29:01.04\00:29:03.47 He says, "But the hour is coming, 00:29:03.51\00:29:05.34 and now is, 00:29:05.37\00:29:07.21 when the true worshipers will worship 00:29:07.24\00:29:09.71 the Father in spirit and truth, 00:29:09.74\00:29:12.11 for the Father is seeking such to worship Him." 00:29:12.15\00:29:14.85 And then here's the verse, verse 24, "God is Spirit, 00:29:14.88\00:29:17.95 and those who worship Him 00:29:17.99\00:29:19.82 must worship in spirit and in truth." 00:29:19.85\00:29:23.86 So let's first get this out of the way. 00:29:23.89\00:29:26.13 We have to understand the difference 00:29:26.16\00:29:27.50 between worship and actions of worship. 00:29:27.53\00:29:30.33 Of course, there are actions of worship, 00:29:30.37\00:29:32.00 there are expressions of worship, 00:29:32.03\00:29:33.97 but then there's a little bit more of a formal name for 00:29:34.00\00:29:36.40 and that would be the liturgy. 00:29:36.44\00:29:37.77 Many people go to church, 00:29:37.81\00:29:39.14 and they do things and they call it worship, 00:29:39.17\00:29:41.98 raising of the hands, clapping, singing songs, 00:29:42.01\00:29:44.25 those are the actions 00:29:44.28\00:29:45.88 which are expressive of worship, 00:29:45.91\00:29:47.78 but worship is 00:29:47.82\00:29:49.15 as Pastor John brought up beautifully, 00:29:49.18\00:29:50.52 and I'm just gonna kind of add this, 00:29:50.55\00:29:51.89 that worship is the attitude of the heart. 00:29:51.92\00:29:54.26 It's a state of being, okay? 00:29:54.29\00:29:56.32 You worship God in your actions and in your choices 00:29:56.36\00:29:59.89 and in your very attitude towards God each and every day. 00:29:59.93\00:30:03.13 And so when we worship God, 00:30:03.16\00:30:04.50 we must worship Him in spirit and in truth. 00:30:04.53\00:30:06.80 So what does that mean? 00:30:06.84\00:30:08.57 I'm gonna start with the Spirit aspect 00:30:08.60\00:30:09.97 'cause this is the one 00:30:10.01\00:30:11.34 that usually most people don't fully understand. 00:30:11.37\00:30:13.71 I'm gonna read a quote here from Desire of Ages, page 189. 00:30:13.74\00:30:16.41 Notice what she says here 00:30:16.44\00:30:17.78 about this worshiping God in spirit. 00:30:17.81\00:30:20.52 "Since the religion that comes from God 00:30:20.55\00:30:22.68 is the only religion that will lead to God. 00:30:22.72\00:30:25.89 In order to serve Him aright, 00:30:25.92\00:30:27.82 we must be born of the Divine Spirit." 00:30:27.86\00:30:31.56 Keep that in mind. "Born of the Divine Spirit. 00:30:31.59\00:30:33.76 This will purify the heart and renew the mind, 00:30:33.80\00:30:37.13 giving us a new capacity for knowing and loving God. 00:30:37.17\00:30:40.60 It will give us a willing obedience 00:30:40.64\00:30:43.30 to all His requirements." 00:30:43.34\00:30:45.17 Okay, notice this. 00:30:45.21\00:30:46.54 It goes on to say, 00:30:46.57\00:30:47.91 "This is true worship in spirit. 00:30:47.94\00:30:51.21 It is the fruit of the working of the Holy Spirit." 00:30:51.25\00:30:55.72 Okay, so I'm gonna reference this really quickly 00:30:55.75\00:30:58.09 worshiping in spirit, if you just go back a chapter, 00:30:58.12\00:31:00.52 we just read the meeting 00:31:00.56\00:31:02.26 between Jesus and the woman at the well, 00:31:02.29\00:31:04.13 in John Chapter 4, 00:31:04.16\00:31:05.49 but if you go back a chapter to John Chapter 3, 00:31:05.53\00:31:07.36 Jesus had already explained this spiritual transformation. 00:31:07.40\00:31:11.10 If you're gonna worship the Lord in spirit, okay? 00:31:11.13\00:31:14.27 Don't miss this point. 00:31:14.30\00:31:15.80 You have to be renewed by the Holy Spirit. 00:31:15.84\00:31:18.07 You have to have 00:31:18.11\00:31:19.44 a spiritual transformation from Christ. 00:31:19.47\00:31:22.18 And it has to be an ongoing experience 00:31:22.21\00:31:24.18 in which you are led by the Spirit of God 00:31:24.21\00:31:26.82 into an obedient relationship with Him. 00:31:26.85\00:31:29.62 Therefore, it puts you 00:31:29.65\00:31:30.99 in a constant state of worshiping Him in spirit, 00:31:31.02\00:31:35.19 referencing John Chapter 3 00:31:35.22\00:31:36.56 when Jesus was talking to Nicodemus, okay? 00:31:36.59\00:31:39.09 Nicodemus says, 00:31:39.13\00:31:40.60 "You're telling me to go back into my mother's womb 00:31:40.63\00:31:42.03 and be born again." 00:31:42.06\00:31:43.40 He's like, "Nah, man, you missing it, 00:31:43.43\00:31:44.77 you missing it either. 00:31:44.80\00:31:46.13 What's of the flesh is of the flesh, 00:31:46.17\00:31:47.50 but what is a born of the spirit is spirit." 00:31:47.54\00:31:49.87 And then he gives an example. 00:31:49.90\00:31:51.24 He says, "You don't take into consideration the wind." 00:31:51.27\00:31:53.58 He goes, "You know, you feel its effects, 00:31:53.61\00:31:54.98 you can hear it, 00:31:55.01\00:31:56.34 but you can't see 00:31:56.38\00:31:57.71 where it's going so is the spirit." 00:31:57.75\00:31:59.08 In other words, he's like, "It's a spiritual thing. 00:31:59.11\00:32:00.75 You need to be born of the Spirit." 00:32:00.78\00:32:03.02 And at any time that can happen, 00:32:03.05\00:32:04.69 but here's what you got to do. 00:32:04.72\00:32:06.05 And I'm going to reference this. 00:32:06.09\00:32:07.42 This is John 3:14, Jesus says, 00:32:07.46\00:32:09.56 "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, 00:32:09.59\00:32:11.96 even so must the Son of Man be lifted up." 00:32:11.99\00:32:14.13 And so how can we have 00:32:14.16\00:32:15.50 this constant ongoing worshiping 00:32:15.53\00:32:17.87 in spirit 00:32:17.90\00:32:19.23 in which we are being renewed by the spirit 00:32:19.27\00:32:20.77 and the Holy Spirit blows through our heart 00:32:20.80\00:32:22.84 and transforms our life, 00:32:22.87\00:32:24.31 you have to be constantly looking 00:32:24.34\00:32:26.98 to the uplifted Savior. 00:32:27.01\00:32:28.64 You have to put Jesus in the forefront 00:32:28.68\00:32:31.21 and constantly keep your eyes on Him. 00:32:31.25\00:32:33.05 Now I'm speaking spiritually here. 00:32:33.08\00:32:34.62 Obviously, we have lives, but spiritually speaking, 00:32:34.65\00:32:37.59 Christ should always be at the center of our lives. 00:32:37.62\00:32:40.39 When we lift up the Savior 00:32:40.42\00:32:42.02 and we behold the uplifted Savior, 00:32:42.06\00:32:44.03 all the time, we will be renewed day by day. 00:32:44.06\00:32:47.96 The Holy Spirit as the Bible teaches us 00:32:48.00\00:32:49.70 in John Chapter 14 and John Chapter 16. 00:32:49.73\00:32:52.50 He teaches us all things, 00:32:52.53\00:32:54.50 he will bring all things to our memory, 00:32:54.54\00:32:56.40 he will reprove the world of sin, 00:32:56.44\00:32:57.77 he will guide you into all truth, 00:32:57.81\00:32:59.94 and he will always glorify Christ 00:32:59.97\00:33:02.18 by revealing his character to you. 00:33:02.21\00:33:04.31 Again, that's John 14, and John 16, and John 14:26, 00:33:04.35\00:33:08.68 and John 16:8, 13, and 14, I'm going pretty fast here, 00:33:08.72\00:33:12.99 but you can go to YouTube and rewatch it and pause it. 00:33:13.02\00:33:16.09 Let's move on. 00:33:16.12\00:33:17.46 So being transformed by the Holy Spirit, 00:33:17.49\00:33:19.89 being led by the Holy Spirit 00:33:19.93\00:33:21.26 to live an obedient, faith-filled life in Christ 00:33:21.30\00:33:25.27 that's worshiping God in spirit, 00:33:25.30\00:33:26.87 but what about truth, okay? 00:33:26.90\00:33:28.80 Worshiping God in truth, you see, at the same time, 00:33:28.84\00:33:30.94 we must worship in truth, 00:33:30.97\00:33:32.67 we must have some correct knowledge of God, 00:33:32.71\00:33:36.01 but we also need to know that we need to know 00:33:36.04\00:33:38.11 His requirements for us. 00:33:38.15\00:33:39.48 In other words, 00:33:39.51\00:33:40.85 this is where doctrine comes in. 00:33:40.88\00:33:42.22 Many people wanna worship the Lord in spirit. 00:33:42.25\00:33:43.65 In other words, 00:33:43.69\00:33:45.02 I've been to churches and grew up, 00:33:45.05\00:33:46.39 you know, in certain churches 00:33:46.42\00:33:47.76 where it was all about the feelings 00:33:47.79\00:33:49.12 and the emotions, 00:33:49.16\00:33:50.49 but there was no truth. 00:33:50.53\00:33:51.86 You have to pair the two. 00:33:51.89\00:33:53.23 Jesus said in John 17:17, "Sanctify them by Thy truth. 00:33:53.26\00:33:58.00 Thy word is truth." 00:33:58.03\00:33:59.70 How are we sanctified? 00:33:59.73\00:34:01.20 By the Word of God. 00:34:01.24\00:34:02.60 Jesus Himself said 00:34:02.64\00:34:03.97 that if you're gonna be sanctified, 00:34:04.01\00:34:05.34 which by the way means to be set apart, for a holy use, 00:34:05.37\00:34:07.51 God wants to set us apart for a holy use. 00:34:07.54\00:34:10.71 He wants us to worship Him in spirit, but also in truth. 00:34:10.75\00:34:15.38 That's why in 2 Thessalonians Chapter 2, 00:34:15.42\00:34:17.75 Paul talks about, 00:34:17.79\00:34:19.12 you know, those who do not have the love of the truth, 00:34:19.15\00:34:22.09 this is 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 00:34:22.12\00:34:24.49 talks about those in the last day, 00:34:24.53\00:34:25.86 they don't have a love for the truth. 00:34:25.89\00:34:27.23 And therefore he says, 00:34:27.26\00:34:28.60 "For this reason 00:34:28.63\00:34:29.96 God will send them strong delusion, 00:34:30.00\00:34:31.33 that they will continue to believe a lie, 00:34:31.37\00:34:33.13 that they may be condemned 00:34:33.17\00:34:34.70 who did not believe the truth." 00:34:34.74\00:34:37.01 My friends, you can think 00:34:37.04\00:34:38.37 you're having a spiritual experience. 00:34:38.41\00:34:40.54 You can think that you're having 00:34:40.58\00:34:42.34 this great, amazing, emotional spiritual experience, 00:34:42.38\00:34:45.68 but if you are rejecting 00:34:45.71\00:34:47.32 the truth of God's Word, my friends, 00:34:47.35\00:34:49.35 that's where Jesus says they worship Me in vain. 00:34:49.38\00:34:53.02 Jesus talks about being worship. 00:34:53.05\00:34:54.39 That's why Paul said in 2 Timothy 4:2-4, 00:34:54.42\00:34:57.56 "Preach the word! 00:34:57.59\00:34:58.93 Preach the word, be instant, in season and out of season. 00:34:58.96\00:35:01.30 Reprove, rebuke 00:35:01.33\00:35:02.66 with all longsuffering and doctrine." 00:35:02.70\00:35:04.83 They don't save us, but they lead us to the Savior. 00:35:04.87\00:35:07.50 "For the time will come," he says, 00:35:07.54\00:35:08.87 "when they will not endure sound doctrine, 00:35:08.90\00:35:10.74 and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, 00:35:10.77\00:35:12.67 and shall be turned into fables." 00:35:12.71\00:35:14.08 So, my friends, I wanna end with this. 00:35:14.11\00:35:16.04 This is John 8:31, it says, 00:35:16.08\00:35:19.21 "Then Jesus said to those Jews which believed on Him, 00:35:19.25\00:35:21.65 'If you continue in My word, 00:35:21.68\00:35:23.59 then you are My disciples indeed. 00:35:23.62\00:35:24.95 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall, " 00:35:24.99\00:35:27.72 not set you free, but, "make you free." 00:35:27.76\00:35:30.46 Be free in Jesus, 00:35:30.49\00:35:31.96 worship Him in spirit and in truth. 00:35:31.99\00:35:33.40 Amen. Hallelujah. 00:35:33.43\00:35:34.76 So far, I think this is my favorite lesson now 00:35:34.80\00:35:36.73 if we turn back. 00:35:36.77\00:35:38.10 I have Wednesday, 00:35:38.13\00:35:39.47 which is The Beauty of Holiness. 00:35:39.50\00:35:41.74 If you open your Bibles to 1 Chronicle 16, 00:35:41.77\00:35:46.88 we're going to spend some time in 1 Chronicles 16. 00:35:46.91\00:35:50.11 I wanna start off with verse 29 because this is the topic. 00:35:50.15\00:35:55.62 It says, "Give to the Lord the glory due His name, 00:35:55.65\00:35:58.92 bring an offering, and come before Him. 00:35:58.95\00:36:02.82 Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!" 00:36:02.86\00:36:07.30 How do we worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness? 00:36:07.33\00:36:10.30 We're concentrating on His purity, His perfection, 00:36:10.33\00:36:14.80 His power, His purpose, His plan, 00:36:14.84\00:36:18.71 but there's more than that, 00:36:18.74\00:36:20.11 you know, as we concentrate on the Lord, 00:36:20.14\00:36:24.05 it draws our hearts to thanksgiving and praise, 00:36:24.08\00:36:28.88 but there's more and you hit that 00:36:28.92\00:36:30.99 is that we worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, 00:36:31.02\00:36:34.52 when we are living our lives, 00:36:34.56\00:36:37.69 according to His plan 00:36:37.73\00:36:40.36 when we are set apart for His purposes. 00:36:40.40\00:36:43.77 Obedience is the highest expression 00:36:43.80\00:36:47.34 of worship 00:36:47.37\00:36:48.70 when you think about that. 00:36:48.74\00:36:50.74 So let's look at 1 Chronicles. 00:36:50.77\00:36:52.94 Well, let me just set this up. 00:36:52.97\00:36:55.41 1 Chronicles Chapter 16, 00:36:55.44\00:36:58.75 has one of the most beautiful psalms in it. 00:36:58.78\00:37:02.35 And this is the, 00:37:02.38\00:37:04.55 at the dedication of the tabernacle, 00:37:04.59\00:37:07.86 in Mount Zion. 00:37:07.89\00:37:09.42 And what had happened is, 00:37:09.46\00:37:11.39 the Philistines had stolen the ark, 00:37:11.43\00:37:16.56 then it was returned to Israel, 00:37:16.60\00:37:19.40 and it rested at the house of Abinadab. 00:37:19.43\00:37:24.81 Aren't you glad your name is not Abinadab, 00:37:24.84\00:37:28.24 but it was there for 20 years. 00:37:28.28\00:37:29.84 Now he had two sons, 00:37:29.88\00:37:33.62 one son was Eleazar, the priest, 00:37:33.65\00:37:37.02 but also Uzzah was his son. 00:37:37.05\00:37:40.39 So King David prepares this tabernacle in Jerusalem. 00:37:40.42\00:37:44.59 And, you know what, I love about the tabernacle, 00:37:44.63\00:37:46.76 it is theology in physical form. 00:37:46.80\00:37:52.33 It all pointed to Jesus, 00:37:52.37\00:37:54.07 it was all about the plan of Jesus, 00:37:54.10\00:37:56.91 and worship, we need worship in education, 00:37:56.94\00:38:00.58 we need to let the plan of salvation, 00:38:00.61\00:38:04.41 the love of Jesus be the center, 00:38:04.45\00:38:07.35 but so what he has done is he's built this tabernacle. 00:38:07.38\00:38:13.92 And, you know, they would go there 00:38:13.96\00:38:15.32 and they'd give burnt offerings, 00:38:15.36\00:38:17.03 which that was to indicate 00:38:17.06\00:38:20.70 their total commitment to the Lord. 00:38:20.73\00:38:23.33 They would give fellowship offerings 00:38:23.37\00:38:25.10 that was to indicate 00:38:25.13\00:38:26.47 the covenant relationship with the Lord, 00:38:26.50\00:38:28.87 but they go... 00:38:28.90\00:38:30.24 Oh, David also made music an intrical part, 00:38:30.27\00:38:34.34 you know, he appointed the musicians, 00:38:34.38\00:38:36.61 and I'm telling you, 00:38:36.64\00:38:37.98 they had the trumpeting priest, they had the string ensembles, 00:38:38.01\00:38:41.78 and clanging cymbals. 00:38:41.82\00:38:43.69 This was pretty good step, 00:38:43.72\00:38:45.49 but they go down to get the ark, 00:38:45.52\00:38:48.42 that is at Abinadab's. 00:38:48.46\00:38:51.99 And they move it 00:38:52.03\00:38:53.36 not according to God's instructions. 00:38:53.40\00:38:56.60 So Uzzah is struck dead. 00:38:56.63\00:38:58.90 And they have to leave the ark at Obed-Edom's house. 00:38:58.93\00:39:04.31 Now the interesting thing is, he's a Philistine, 00:39:04.34\00:39:07.64 but he was loyal to David and Israel, 00:39:07.68\00:39:11.21 but Obed-Edom and he's got it for three months at his house, 00:39:11.25\00:39:14.78 and he's unusually blessed, while the ark is there. 00:39:14.82\00:39:20.22 So now the second attempt, 00:39:20.26\00:39:21.59 they bring the ark to Jerusalem. 00:39:21.62\00:39:25.23 And they transported it this time, 00:39:25.26\00:39:27.73 according to the prescribed Old Testament law, 00:39:27.76\00:39:31.20 but what I love if you look in 1 Chronicles 15, 00:39:31.23\00:39:34.90 I know that we can't base our worship on feeling, 00:39:34.94\00:39:39.54 but I don't, I mean, feelings alone, 00:39:39.57\00:39:41.81 but you can't really worship without feelings. 00:39:41.84\00:39:44.11 You've got to let have feelings in your heart 00:39:44.15\00:39:46.61 that love for the Lord. 00:39:46.65\00:39:48.08 David was so excited to think 00:39:48.12\00:39:49.82 that the ark was gonna come to rest 00:39:49.85\00:39:52.12 in a permanent place 00:39:52.15\00:39:54.32 that his house would be blessed from here on out. 00:39:54.36\00:39:57.83 He's so excited that as they're proceeding. 00:39:57.86\00:40:01.13 He's dancing before the Lord in the procession going there. 00:40:01.16\00:40:05.20 He remember 00:40:05.23\00:40:06.57 and he writes this beautiful song 00:40:06.60\00:40:10.04 that he's remembering, and recounting 00:40:10.07\00:40:13.44 and rejoicing in God's works for his covenant people. 00:40:13.48\00:40:18.25 So let's look at this. 00:40:18.28\00:40:20.15 1 Chronicles verses, 00:40:20.18\00:40:22.35 it is 1 Chronicles 16:8-13. 00:40:22.38\00:40:27.92 He's exhorting the people to recall and proclaim 00:40:27.96\00:40:32.66 what God has done in the past. 00:40:32.69\00:40:35.36 You know what, that's what praise is about, 00:40:35.40\00:40:37.60 as we're praising God for what He's done and listen, 00:40:37.63\00:40:40.84 oh, listen what he says, "Oh, give thanks to the Lord! 00:40:40.87\00:40:44.61 Call upon His name. 00:40:44.64\00:40:46.41 Make known His deeds among the peoples! 00:40:46.44\00:40:49.41 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him, 00:40:49.44\00:40:51.71 talk of His wondrous works! 00:40:51.75\00:40:54.05 Glory in His holy name, 00:40:54.08\00:40:56.72 let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord! 00:40:56.75\00:41:01.96 Seek the Lord and His strength, seek His face forevermore! 00:41:01.99\00:41:07.66 Remember His marvelous works which He has done, 00:41:07.70\00:41:10.57 His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth, 00:41:10.60\00:41:14.20 O seed of Israel His servant, 00:41:14.24\00:41:16.50 you children of Jacob, His chosen ones! 00:41:16.54\00:41:19.71 Woo! 00:41:19.74\00:41:21.08 I'm already worshiping when you're reading that, 00:41:21.11\00:41:23.14 just gives me chills. 00:41:23.18\00:41:24.78 Now verses 14-22. 00:41:24.81\00:41:27.38 David rehearses the Abrahamic covenant 00:41:27.42\00:41:31.95 that was renewed with Isaac and Jacob 00:41:31.99\00:41:35.52 talking about the land that they're going to get, 00:41:35.56\00:41:38.33 that the Messiah is going to come 00:41:38.36\00:41:40.06 from these progenitors 00:41:40.10\00:41:41.73 and talking about the everlasting justification 00:41:41.76\00:41:47.37 by faith in verse 23 and 24. 00:41:47.40\00:41:51.64 He adds an evangelistic thrust 00:41:51.67\00:41:55.94 that all the world should learn about the God of Israel. 00:41:55.98\00:41:59.71 Listen, verse 24, 00:41:59.75\00:42:01.58 "Declare His glory among the nations, 00:42:01.62\00:42:05.99 His wonders among all people." 00:42:06.02\00:42:09.29 You know, the whole purpose, 00:42:09.32\00:42:12.06 if we look in Deuteronomy, where Moses said, 00:42:12.09\00:42:16.87 "The Rock, your Rock begot you." 00:42:16.90\00:42:21.17 You are begotten of God, Israel, 00:42:21.20\00:42:24.27 which that term means to be set apart 00:42:24.31\00:42:26.91 for unique covenant purpose. 00:42:26.94\00:42:28.88 The whole reason he chose these people, 00:42:28.91\00:42:31.58 is that the world would understand 00:42:31.61\00:42:34.22 through their experience, 00:42:34.25\00:42:36.12 how wonderful God was, 00:42:36.15\00:42:38.05 and understand the plan of redemption. 00:42:38.09\00:42:41.16 Now in verse... 00:42:41.19\00:42:43.43 We're still in 1 Chronicles 16:25-27 is 00:42:43.46\00:42:48.36 He's the only true God, worship Him as Creator. 00:42:48.40\00:42:51.83 Verse 28 and 29, this is interesting. 00:42:51.87\00:42:55.90 Worship Him with offerings, and let me tell you something. 00:42:55.94\00:43:00.48 Praise is an offering to God, we're supposed to. 00:43:00.51\00:43:04.35 God's works should motivate us 00:43:04.38\00:43:07.88 to service and part of that is praise. 00:43:07.92\00:43:10.39 Verse 28, "Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples, 00:43:10.42\00:43:16.12 give to the Lord glory and strength." 00:43:16.16\00:43:19.19 It's saying 00:43:19.23\00:43:20.56 ascribe these attributes to Him. 00:43:20.60\00:43:23.06 Let your mouth worship Him for this. 00:43:23.10\00:43:26.47 "Give to the Lord the glory due His name, 00:43:26.50\00:43:31.94 bring an offering, come before Him. 00:43:31.97\00:43:35.44 Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!" 00:43:35.48\00:43:40.12 When is the last time you worship the Lord 00:43:40.15\00:43:43.89 in the beauty of holiness. 00:43:43.92\00:43:47.06 Now he goes on 00:43:47.09\00:43:48.42 and just I wanna get here verses 30-33. 00:43:48.46\00:43:52.36 He talks about the power of God as Creator is recognized 00:43:52.39\00:43:57.57 and that we're to testify of His glory. 00:43:57.60\00:44:00.34 But he ends with the need to rely on God for salvation. 00:44:00.37\00:44:04.01 Let's look at 1 Chronicles 16:34. 00:44:04.04\00:44:07.68 "Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! 00:44:07.71\00:44:10.75 For His mercy endures forever. 00:44:10.78\00:44:13.31 And say, 'Save us, O God of our salvation, 00:44:13.35\00:44:17.12 gather us together, 00:44:17.15\00:44:18.49 deliver us from the Gentiles, 00:44:18.52\00:44:20.42 to give thanks to Your holy name, 00:44:20.46\00:44:23.26 to triumph in Your praise.' 00:44:23.29\00:44:25.39 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel 00:44:25.43\00:44:28.36 from everlasting to everlasting!" 00:44:28.40\00:44:32.43 He's talking about 00:44:32.47\00:44:33.80 God's eternal unchanging nature. 00:44:33.84\00:44:36.07 "And all the people said," what? 00:44:36.10\00:44:38.34 "'Amen!' " 00:44:38.37\00:44:40.24 So bottom line is what God has done, 00:44:40.28\00:44:43.68 deserves our praise and worship, 00:44:43.71\00:44:47.65 when you think of the sacrificial system, 00:44:47.68\00:44:51.42 and how God became a man 00:44:51.45\00:44:55.66 and was our substitute on the cross, 00:44:55.69\00:44:59.59 this gives us hope for eternal life, 00:44:59.63\00:45:02.26 but we should worship Him in the beauty of holiness. 00:45:02.30\00:45:07.40 And I just want to encourage you. 00:45:07.44\00:45:11.01 I make praise, at least 50% of my prayer, 00:45:11.04\00:45:15.94 I always begin with praise and thanksgiving. 00:45:15.98\00:45:18.75 It's probably 50 to 70% of my prayer 00:45:18.78\00:45:22.48 because then I am reminded 00:45:22.52\00:45:26.35 of the beauty of the holiness of God 00:45:26.39\00:45:28.86 in everything that comes after that the supplications, 00:45:28.89\00:45:33.09 even the intercession, 00:45:33.13\00:45:35.16 it's based on knowing the God who's going to answer. 00:45:35.20\00:45:39.00 Amen. 00:45:39.03\00:45:40.54 Could you mention the scripture you read last one 00:45:40.57\00:45:43.37 because I think you said 00:45:43.41\00:45:44.74 Corinthians while you meant something else? 00:45:44.77\00:45:46.11 1 Chronicles. Okay. 00:45:46.14\00:45:47.48 Did I say Corinthians, isn't that funny? 00:45:47.51\00:45:49.08 How we do that? 00:45:49.11\00:45:50.45 1 Chronicles 16. 00:45:50.48\00:45:51.88 Thank you. Thank you very much. 00:45:51.91\00:45:53.45 Well, God's blessings continue 00:45:53.48\00:45:55.15 as we go into the next day's lesson. 00:45:55.18\00:45:57.82 Now I wanna read some of the titles 00:45:57.85\00:45:59.19 that we went through 00:45:59.22\00:46:00.56 because the title of this lesson 00:46:00.59\00:46:01.92 is Worship in Education then we heard, 00:46:01.96\00:46:05.53 we all worship something, the next one, 00:46:05.56\00:46:08.90 And Declare Them to Their Children, 00:46:08.93\00:46:11.17 the next one In Spirit and In Truth, 00:46:11.20\00:46:13.34 and then you just heard The Beauty of Holiness, 00:46:13.37\00:46:15.74 this one is entitled Idolatry in Education. 00:46:15.77\00:46:18.51 Why? 00:46:18.54\00:46:19.87 Because we are facing a great controversy 00:46:19.91\00:46:22.91 between good and evil. 00:46:22.94\00:46:25.38 And you see this even in education. 00:46:25.41\00:46:27.58 So when we look at the word idolatry, 00:46:27.62\00:46:30.92 and you look it up in the dictionary, 00:46:30.95\00:46:32.55 one from Merriam Webster says, 00:46:32.59\00:46:34.09 "The worship of a physical object as God, 00:46:34.12\00:46:37.86 also a moderate attachment or devotion to something." 00:46:37.89\00:46:42.56 And I will add or someone 00:46:42.60\00:46:45.20 because people worship people, people worship celebrities, 00:46:45.23\00:46:49.87 some people worship singers, which are also celebrities, 00:46:49.90\00:46:52.97 some people worship presidents or kings, 00:46:53.01\00:46:56.08 but the only one worthy of worship is God 00:46:56.11\00:46:59.28 and God alone. 00:46:59.31\00:47:00.92 Now the word in the Greek 00:47:00.95\00:47:02.92 is very similar to the way it sounds in Spanish, 00:47:02.95\00:47:05.85 idolatria, which means also, 00:47:05.89\00:47:08.69 when you look it up, is image worship, as well. 00:47:08.72\00:47:13.16 So we need to be extremely careful with this 00:47:13.19\00:47:16.77 because we are facing a great controversy 00:47:16.80\00:47:19.10 between good and evil. 00:47:19.13\00:47:20.47 I will read to you from Revelation 13:15-17, 00:47:20.50\00:47:24.61 to remind you that we are living in times 00:47:24.64\00:47:26.98 when we are going to see this. 00:47:27.01\00:47:29.84 "He was granted power 00:47:29.88\00:47:32.95 to give breath to the image of the beast, 00:47:32.98\00:47:36.05 that the image of the beast should both speak and cause 00:47:36.08\00:47:40.49 as many as would not worship the image of the beast 00:47:40.52\00:47:43.86 to be killed." 00:47:43.89\00:47:45.23 This is coming. 00:47:45.26\00:47:46.66 "He causes all, both small and great, 00:47:46.70\00:47:48.56 rich and poor, free and slave, 00:47:48.60\00:47:51.10 to receive a mark on their right hand 00:47:51.13\00:47:53.90 or on their foreheads, 00:47:53.94\00:47:56.87 and that no one may buy or sell 00:47:56.91\00:47:58.77 except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, 00:47:58.81\00:48:02.14 or the number of his name." 00:48:02.18\00:48:04.51 So this is idolatry. 00:48:04.55\00:48:06.72 And you may think today, 00:48:06.75\00:48:08.08 "Well, people don't worship images as they used to, 00:48:08.12\00:48:11.42 but yes, they do." 00:48:11.45\00:48:13.15 I can tell you that. 00:48:13.19\00:48:14.72 Every week, some people bow before images. 00:48:14.76\00:48:18.36 You may know in some countries, they do worship things, 00:48:18.39\00:48:21.90 from rocks to plants, 00:48:21.93\00:48:23.67 and different things of this nature. 00:48:23.70\00:48:26.50 It's not a secret, you can go to India. 00:48:26.53\00:48:28.20 I remember our son was in India, 00:48:28.24\00:48:30.94 preaching over there. 00:48:30.97\00:48:32.31 And as he was walking by, he says, 00:48:32.34\00:48:34.21 "Oh, look at this beautiful plant." 00:48:34.24\00:48:35.58 "Don't touch it." 00:48:35.61\00:48:36.95 He was told, "That's a god here." 00:48:36.98\00:48:39.01 It was a plant. 00:48:39.05\00:48:40.38 And so people worship different things. 00:48:40.42\00:48:42.48 Satan has worked hard 00:48:42.52\00:48:45.32 to put something else in front of people 00:48:45.35\00:48:48.26 so that people will worship something else instead of God, 00:48:48.29\00:48:51.09 but he is the one that wants worship. 00:48:51.13\00:48:54.03 Notice what he said to Jesus, when he tempted him in person, 00:48:54.06\00:48:59.80 there in Matthew Chapter 4, I'm going to read verses 8-10. 00:48:59.83\00:49:03.81 "Again, the devil took Him up 00:49:03.84\00:49:06.01 on an exceedingly high mountain, 00:49:06.04\00:49:08.18 and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory." 00:49:08.21\00:49:13.82 Verse 9, "And he said to Him, 00:49:13.85\00:49:15.18 'All these things I will give You 00:49:15.22\00:49:17.29 if You will fall down and worship me.'" 00:49:17.32\00:49:20.72 This is what the devil wants. 00:49:20.76\00:49:22.52 He wants worship. 00:49:22.56\00:49:24.39 And if you won't worship him directly, 00:49:24.43\00:49:26.93 he wants you to worship something else or someone else, 00:49:26.96\00:49:30.40 but Jesus said in verse 10, "Then Jesus said to him, 00:49:30.43\00:49:33.34 'Away with you," I like that, 00:49:33.37\00:49:34.77 'Away with you, Satan! 00:49:34.80\00:49:37.54 For it is written, 00:49:37.57\00:49:38.91 'You shall worship the Lord your God, 00:49:38.94\00:49:40.81 and Him only you shall worship.'" 00:49:40.84\00:49:44.98 Praise be to God, that's whom we shall worship, 00:49:45.01\00:49:48.12 the only one worthy of our worship. 00:49:48.15\00:49:50.59 And I encourage you to consider your life. 00:49:50.62\00:49:52.52 You may have something 00:49:52.55\00:49:53.89 that you're worshiping in your house. 00:49:53.92\00:49:55.52 And what could that be? 00:49:55.56\00:49:57.03 Pray, God will reveal it to you. 00:49:57.06\00:49:59.19 If God is not the one that you're worshiping. 00:49:59.23\00:50:02.40 Stop today and worship the only true God, 00:50:02.43\00:50:05.50 our Creator. 00:50:05.53\00:50:07.20 Now the lesson brings Mark 7:1-13 00:50:07.24\00:50:11.11 because we have some principles here 00:50:11.14\00:50:13.17 that we need to highlight 00:50:13.21\00:50:15.61 because we're talking about Idolatry in Education. 00:50:15.64\00:50:19.81 How can idolatry get into education you may ask? 00:50:19.85\00:50:23.12 Well, this is more of something you may see, 00:50:23.15\00:50:26.19 you may see it in Christian schools, 00:50:26.22\00:50:27.56 but you'll see it most definitely 00:50:27.59\00:50:29.22 in the secular educational system. 00:50:29.26\00:50:33.06 So let's look, 00:50:33.09\00:50:35.13 we don't have time to read the whole Mark 7:1-13. 00:50:35.16\00:50:39.97 I encourage you to do so, 00:50:40.00\00:50:41.34 but here's the scene where the Pharisees and scribes 00:50:41.37\00:50:43.34 came to attack Jesus, 00:50:43.37\00:50:46.27 let's say attacking Jesus, 00:50:46.31\00:50:48.01 finding a way to cause Him to stumble 00:50:48.04\00:50:52.21 to have something to accuse Him. 00:50:52.25\00:50:54.18 So they're in Mark Chapter 7 00:50:54.22\00:50:56.05 and I'll just read verses 5 maybe through 9. 00:50:56.08\00:50:59.85 And this is what the Bible says. 00:50:59.89\00:51:01.22 "Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, 00:51:01.26\00:51:03.46 'Why do Your disciples not walk 00:51:03.49\00:51:05.86 according to the tradition of the elders, 00:51:05.89\00:51:09.30 but eat bread with unwashed hands?' 00:51:09.33\00:51:12.00 He answered and said to them, 00:51:12.03\00:51:13.60 'Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites," 00:51:13.64\00:51:17.67 now this is strong language, 00:51:17.71\00:51:19.04 but this is what they were, 00:51:19.07\00:51:20.64 "as it is written, 00:51:20.68\00:51:22.01 'This people honors me with their lips, 00:51:22.04\00:51:25.58 but their heart is far from Me." 00:51:25.61\00:51:29.08 You see, if you're just worshiping God, 00:51:29.12\00:51:31.15 from your lips, but your heart is far from God, 00:51:31.19\00:51:34.62 then you're not really worshiping God. 00:51:34.66\00:51:36.69 Like it was already said 00:51:36.73\00:51:38.29 we must worship God in spirit and in truth. 00:51:38.33\00:51:40.56 And to do this, you must do so with all of your heart. 00:51:40.60\00:51:43.90 Notice, "And in vain they worship Me, 00:51:43.93\00:51:47.90 teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." 00:51:47.94\00:51:52.07 Notice what they do. 00:51:52.11\00:51:53.44 "For laying aside the commandment of God, 00:51:53.48\00:51:56.75 you hold the tradition of men, 00:51:56.78\00:51:59.38 the washing of pitchers and cups, 00:51:59.41\00:52:01.82 and many other such things you do.' 00:52:01.85\00:52:04.45 He said to them, 00:52:04.49\00:52:05.82 'All too well you reject the commandment of God, 00:52:05.85\00:52:08.66 that you may keep your tradition.'" 00:52:08.69\00:52:11.66 Be careful with tradition, 00:52:11.69\00:52:13.83 if what you do is not found in the Word of God, 00:52:13.86\00:52:17.90 it is a tradition 00:52:17.93\00:52:19.43 and should not be put above God's Word. 00:52:19.47\00:52:23.74 Now, what happens when you do this? 00:52:23.77\00:52:26.88 Verse 13 is the highlight of this, 00:52:26.91\00:52:31.11 it says, "Making the Word of God 00:52:31.15\00:52:33.65 of no effect through your tradition 00:52:33.68\00:52:36.08 which you have handed down. 00:52:36.12\00:52:37.95 And many such things you do." 00:52:37.99\00:52:39.75 So when you put something else above God, 00:52:39.79\00:52:43.79 then you are putting aside God and the Word of God 00:52:43.83\00:52:48.86 and you are worshiping that becomes an idol. 00:52:48.90\00:52:52.70 Now I wanna say something to you 00:52:52.73\00:52:54.10 because there's a great, great danger 00:52:54.14\00:52:57.61 in the school systems. 00:52:57.64\00:53:00.08 And that is the children are presented ideas 00:53:00.11\00:53:04.85 that are contradictory to scriptures, 00:53:04.88\00:53:07.42 and I'm gonna mention one of them 00:53:07.45\00:53:08.78 that is easy to see, evolution. 00:53:08.82\00:53:12.79 Now evolution is an idea that is not founded 00:53:12.82\00:53:15.46 on the Word of God. 00:53:15.49\00:53:16.83 It puts God aside and say we came from nothing, 00:53:16.86\00:53:21.50 basically from nothing, but God created us. 00:53:21.53\00:53:23.97 We are created in His image, Praise be to God. 00:53:24.00\00:53:26.97 Now I want to mention something to you 00:53:27.00\00:53:29.14 about the illusion of truth effect. 00:53:29.17\00:53:32.21 Wow, I don't have enough time to do this, 00:53:32.24\00:53:35.14 but the illusion of truth effect, 00:53:35.18\00:53:38.81 the validity effect, 00:53:38.85\00:53:40.22 truth effect or reiteration effect 00:53:40.25\00:53:42.82 is something that has been proven 00:53:42.85\00:53:46.02 by studies, by universities, what it is? 00:53:46.05\00:53:48.59 The repetition of an idea, 00:53:48.62\00:53:50.59 even if it's a false idea that you know, it's false, 00:53:50.63\00:53:55.53 but you keep hearing it over and over again, 00:53:55.56\00:53:58.03 your mind it becomes familiar in your mind, 00:53:58.07\00:54:01.07 and you then look at that as a truth. 00:54:01.10\00:54:04.81 So consider these children 00:54:04.84\00:54:06.34 that come into the kindergarten, 00:54:06.37\00:54:09.01 first grade, 00:54:09.04\00:54:10.38 and all the way through college. 00:54:10.41\00:54:12.31 They tell you, evolution, evolution, evolution, 00:54:12.35\00:54:16.62 this can have a devastating effect 00:54:16.65\00:54:18.55 on people they begin to question 00:54:18.59\00:54:20.76 and they begin to accept these things as truth. 00:54:20.79\00:54:24.19 In a 2015 study, 00:54:24.23\00:54:27.06 researchers discovered 00:54:27.10\00:54:28.43 that familiarity can overpower rationality, 00:54:28.46\00:54:32.43 and that repetitively hearing that a certain fact is wrong 00:54:32.47\00:54:37.47 can affect the hearer's beliefs. 00:54:37.51\00:54:40.88 Researchers attributed the illusory of truth effects 00:54:40.91\00:54:47.32 impact on participants 00:54:47.35\00:54:48.68 who knew the correct answers to begin with, 00:54:48.72\00:54:51.22 but were persuaded to believe otherwise, 00:54:51.25\00:54:54.26 through the repetition of a falsehood 00:54:54.29\00:54:57.59 to a processing fluency, very dangerous. 00:54:57.63\00:55:02.20 And I encourage you to consider it, 00:55:02.23\00:55:04.63 you know, your children are going to public school, 00:55:04.67\00:55:06.17 some people can't afford to pay, 00:55:06.20\00:55:07.90 but you must hold these family worships, 00:55:07.94\00:55:11.91 and keep continuing to present to them the truth, 00:55:11.94\00:55:15.68 the truth of God's Word, 00:55:15.71\00:55:17.58 to counteract the things 00:55:17.61\00:55:19.85 that may lead them away from the Lord. 00:55:19.88\00:55:22.18 So, and I encourage you to consider Psalms 16:11, 00:55:22.22\00:55:27.26 "Thy will show me the path of life, 00:55:27.29\00:55:28.99 in Thy presence is fullness of joy, 00:55:29.02\00:55:32.43 at Thy right hand 00:55:32.46\00:55:33.90 there are pleasures forevermore." 00:55:33.93\00:55:35.60 Let's worship the only true God. 00:55:35.63\00:55:37.77 He alone is worthy of our worship. 00:55:37.80\00:55:39.80 Amen.
