" 00:04:13.11\00:04:17.35 Panel: Amen. 00:04:17.39\00:04:18.72 Shelley: It has always been God's plan 00:04:18.75\00:04:22.09 that God would come down... become a man 00:04:22.12\00:04:24.13 and be our Savior... 00:04:24.16\00:04:26.06 it just gives me goosebumps. 00:04:26.09\00:04:27.90 The everlasting blood of the covenant was shed 00:04:27.93\00:04:32.30 on Calvary's cross for you and for me 00:04:32.33\00:04:35.37 so, as God is introducing this covenant, 00:04:35.40\00:04:38.44 we have what we call the Old Covenant which we'll discuss 00:04:38.47\00:04:41.94 in just a moment 00:04:41.98\00:04:43.31 and the Ten Commandments are at the heart 00:04:43.35\00:04:46.05 of the Old Covenant... 00:04:46.08\00:04:47.58 then, as it is fulfilled and moves on in progression, 00:04:47.62\00:04:52.42 we have the New Covenant 00:04:52.45\00:04:54.36 and the Ten Commandments 00:04:54.39\00:04:55.72 are at the heart of the New Covenant as well... 00:04:55.76\00:04:58.26 so, what they... 00:04:58.29\00:05:01.06 the whole thing of covenant is love. 00:05:01.10\00:05:03.93 Panel: Amen. 00:05:03.97\00:05:05.33 Shelley: It's just about love. 00:05:05.37\00:05:07.30 Now, God introduced... as I said in Genesis 3:15 00:05:07.34\00:05:12.11 to Abraham... it was righteousness by faith 00:05:12.14\00:05:15.28 and He then gives at Mount Sinai 00:05:15.31\00:05:18.88 God speaks His Ten Commandments... 00:05:18.91\00:05:22.45 God writes them on stone... 00:05:22.48\00:05:24.65 has Moses put them... where? 00:05:24.69\00:05:26.86 Where do the Ten Commandments... 00:05:26.89\00:05:28.96 Panel: Inside the Ark. Shelley: Inside the Ark... 00:05:28.99\00:05:30.76 the Ark is the throne of God... 00:05:30.79\00:05:32.66 the Ten Commandments are the character of God... 00:05:32.69\00:05:36.67 and this law of Love is what His Government is established upon. 00:05:36.70\00:05:43.10 It's always been in effect 00:05:43.17\00:05:45.41 angelic beings had it written in their heart... 00:05:45.44\00:05:49.08 they... the heavenly intelligences followed this 00:05:49.11\00:05:52.71 from the very beginning 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.12 but now, when He is giving this, 00:05:54.15\00:05:57.85 He has Moses come back up the mountain 00:05:57.92\00:06:00.86 and then He gives covenant terms... civil laws... 00:06:00.89\00:06:04.59 there were sacrificial laws 00:06:04.63\00:06:07.70 and here is what Exodus 24:7 says 00:06:07.73\00:06:11.83 that Moses writes on parchment... 00:06:11.87\00:06:15.80 these... all these laws in the Book of the Covenant 00:06:15.84\00:06:21.31 now, that's the Old Covenant... 00:06:21.34\00:06:23.61 all these laws and regulations that God gave to Moses. 00:06:23.65\00:06:30.75 Moses wrote them out... 00:06:30.79\00:06:32.59 he speaks them to the people... 00:06:32.62\00:06:34.82 people say, "Yes, everything that God says, we will do... " 00:06:34.86\00:06:37.79 that's the Old Covenant. 00:06:37.83\00:06:39.79 When Moses is standing at the edge of the Promised Land, 00:06:39.83\00:06:43.93 years later, the people were getting ready to go in, 00:06:43.97\00:06:48.07 Moses knows... he cannot go in. 00:06:48.10\00:06:50.81 Now, he is repeating the law 00:06:50.84\00:06:53.44 and that's what the book of Deuteronomy 00:06:53.48\00:06:56.01 is the Book of the Law 00:06:56.04\00:06:58.65 and in Deuteronomy 31:26, God... He says... 00:06:58.68\00:07:04.52 "Take this Book of the Law... " the book of Deuteronomy... 00:07:04.55\00:07:09.72 "put it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, 00:07:09.79\00:07:14.93 it was going to be there as a witness against you... " 00:07:14.96\00:07:18.67 God tells them... 00:07:18.70\00:07:20.04 because it had all of the blessings, 00:07:20.07\00:07:21.97 it had the curses... 00:07:22.00\00:07:23.34 but you know what? 00:07:23.37\00:07:24.71 When God came down in the person of Jesus Christ, 00:07:24.74\00:07:29.64 all of these sacrificial ritualistic ceremonies... 00:07:29.68\00:07:34.72 all of these civil laws began changing... 00:07:34.75\00:07:37.29 or they did change because Christ fulfilled it all. 00:07:37.35\00:07:40.59 Now, here's what happened... 00:07:40.66\00:07:42.22 in Galatia, there were some Judaizers 00:07:42.26\00:07:46.73 who believed that you had to... 00:07:46.76\00:07:50.90 they came to Galatia 00:07:50.93\00:07:52.30 and they're trying to teach these Christians 00:07:52.33\00:07:54.87 "You've got to obey all of this Book of the Law... 00:07:54.90\00:07:59.11 the Mosaic Covenant 00:07:59.14\00:08:00.51 and they were taking away from the 00:08:00.54\00:08:03.61 "sinful teaching of Christianity... " 00:08:03.65\00:08:06.61 righteousness by faith through Christ Jesus. 00:08:06.68\00:08:09.05 They were trying to make these people obey this 00:08:09.08\00:08:12.85 so, Paul... the whole book of Galatians 00:08:12.89\00:08:15.79 is about Paul saying to them, "Hey, wait a minute... " 00:08:15.82\00:08:19.66 he says in Galatians 3, "Foolish Galatians! 00:08:19.69\00:08:23.20 having begun in the Spirit, 00:08:23.23\00:08:25.30 are you now going to try to perfect this work 00:08:25.33\00:08:29.04 in the flesh?" 00:08:29.07\00:08:30.57 So, what he tells us there if I can find my notes here, 00:08:30.61\00:08:35.31 in Galatians 3:10, he says, 00:08:35.34\00:08:37.81 "As many as are of the works of the law, 00:08:37.85\00:08:42.32 whoever is trying to follow that are under the curse... " 00:08:42.35\00:08:45.49 we know what curse he's talking about 00:08:45.52\00:08:48.42 because he quotes Deuteronomy 27:26, 00:08:48.46\00:08:51.43 "Cursed is everyone 00:08:51.46\00:08:54.23 who does not continue in all things which are written 00:08:54.26\00:08:58.60 in the Book of the Law... " 00:08:58.63\00:09:01.57 this is the one on the side of the ark 00:09:01.60\00:09:04.44 to show that it was temporary 00:09:04.47\00:09:06.54 but then he says, "Hey, Christ has redeemed us 00:09:06.57\00:09:09.41 from the curse of the law... " 00:09:09.44\00:09:11.41 and then he says, "So what... what is it? 00:09:11.45\00:09:14.28 Is the law against the promises of God? 00:09:14.32\00:09:17.39 Certainly not, for there had been a law given... " 00:09:17.42\00:09:19.62 this is verse 21, Galatians 3, 00:09:19.65\00:09:22.79 "if there had been a law given which could have given life, 00:09:22.82\00:09:26.70 truly righteousness would have been by the law. " 00:09:26.73\00:09:29.60 But you know what? 00:09:29.63\00:09:31.03 The law... grace has always been the manner of salvation, 00:09:31.07\00:09:35.60 God gave us grace... He also gave us the law, 00:09:35.64\00:09:38.97 God never contradicts Himself. 00:09:39.01\00:09:41.71 The law is grace... 00:09:41.74\00:09:44.88 He gave them both the law and the promise 00:09:44.91\00:09:47.38 work harmoniously. 00:09:47.42\00:09:49.28 He says then in Galatians 3:22, 00:09:49.32\00:09:52.52 "But the Scripture has confined all under sin, 00:09:52.55\00:09:56.26 that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ 00:09:56.29\00:09:59.26 might be given to those who believe. 00:09:59.29\00:10:02.00 But before faith came, 00:10:02.03\00:10:04.60 we were kept under guard by the law... 00:10:04.63\00:10:07.44 What law is he talking about?" 00:10:07.47\00:10:09.34 Obviously, he's already said, "It's the Book of the Law... " 00:10:09.37\00:10:12.34 the Book of the Law that we call the Old Covenant 00:10:12.37\00:10:17.21 is what Paul says was our guard... 00:10:17.25\00:10:22.25 it was... he says, "the law was... " in verse 24, 00:10:22.28\00:10:27.72 "The law was our tutor to bring us to Christ... " 00:10:27.76\00:10:33.16 the law... everything about the Old Testament sanctuary system 00:10:33.19\00:10:39.60 everything pointed to Jesus Christ... 00:10:39.63\00:10:42.40 all of their festivals pointed to Jesus Christ, 00:10:42.44\00:10:46.81 Jesus fulfilled it all so then Paul says, 00:10:46.84\00:10:50.75 "After faith has come... 00:10:50.78\00:10:52.28 once the Messiah came we no longer need a tutor... 00:10:52.31\00:10:56.15 it has been fulfilled... " 00:10:56.18\00:10:58.22 so, Deuteronomy 31 verses 9 through 13, 00:10:58.25\00:11:03.39 let me read this, 00:11:03.43\00:11:04.89 Moses wrote this law... this Book of the Law... 00:11:04.93\00:11:08.30 he delivered it to the priest and verse 11 says, 00:11:08.33\00:11:12.30 "when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God 00:11:12.33\00:11:15.90 in the place which He chooses, 00:11:15.94\00:11:17.27 you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 00:11:17.31\00:11:21.41 Gather the people together, the men... the women... 00:11:21.44\00:11:23.98 the little ones... 00:11:24.05\00:11:25.38 the stranger within your gates... " he says... 00:11:25.41\00:11:27.98 "that they may hear... " 00:11:28.02\00:11:29.75 and oh boy, I'll tell you in Hebrew, 00:11:29.78\00:11:31.99 "hear" meant to put it into practice. 00:11:32.02\00:11:34.12 "that they may learn to fear the Lord your God... " 00:11:34.16\00:11:37.56 to stand in awe... to respect Him... 00:11:37.59\00:11:40.86 to be motivated by love to obey Him 00:11:40.90\00:11:44.13 "and carefully observe all the words of this law, 00:11:44.17\00:11:49.57 that your children, who have not known it, 00:11:49.60\00:11:52.41 may hear and learn to fear the Lord... " 00:11:52.44\00:11:55.21 learn to respect Him... 00:11:55.24\00:11:58.21 so, all who hear the law... 00:11:58.25\00:12:01.12 it talks about God as deliverer... 00:12:01.18\00:12:04.12 God as redeemer, 00:12:04.19\00:12:06.15 God as the one who's going to sanctify us 00:12:06.19\00:12:09.42 and the knowledge of His perfect character... 00:12:09.46\00:12:12.63 the knowledge of His love and His power 00:12:12.69\00:12:16.06 people... when they hear this, 00:12:16.10\00:12:18.43 they're motivated to walk in obedience to God. 00:12:18.47\00:12:23.24 The Quarterly says this, God was intentional 00:12:23.27\00:12:27.98 about the ways that He imparted His law to Israel... 00:12:28.01\00:12:31.25 He made every provision 00:12:31.28\00:12:32.61 so that the laws would not be forgotten 00:12:32.65\00:12:35.05 and in this way... God is a longsuffering educator. 00:12:35.08\00:12:39.25 Think about that a moment, He teaches... " 00:14:56.99\00:14:59.59 and, of course, we know that Moses had... 00:14:59.66\00:15:02.23 had... it was nearing the end of his life 00:15:02.26\00:15:05.33 and God had said, 00:15:05.37\00:15:06.90 "You're going to sleep with your fathers very soon 00:15:06.94\00:15:09.50 and Joshua is going to come in and pick up where you left off 00:15:09.54\00:15:14.04 and he's going to lead you into the Promised Land" 00:15:14.08\00:15:17.81 but then... but then God has a little kind of... 00:15:17.85\00:15:21.55 hmmm... I'm going to say a little meeting 00:15:21.58\00:15:23.39 with Joshua and Moses and he says... 00:15:23.42\00:15:26.32 "Again, Moses, you're not going to lead... 00:15:26.35\00:15:28.66 you're going to sleep with your fathers 00:15:28.72\00:15:30.96 and unfortunately, after... after you are deceased, 00:15:30.99\00:15:36.77 the people are going to break the covenant 00:15:36.80\00:15:40.30 that I made with them 00:15:40.34\00:15:42.80 and they're going to serve other gods. " 00:15:42.84\00:15:44.87 Now, who wants to hear that, right? 00:15:44.91\00:15:46.24 Panel: Agreeing. 00:15:46.27\00:15:47.61 Terry: You know, I mean, you would think, 00:15:47.64\00:15:48.98 I don't know what Moses was thinking, 00:15:49.01\00:15:50.35 he was maybe thinking, "Wow, it's going to be... 00:15:50.38\00:15:51.85 it's going to be... you know, continue on... " 00:15:51.91\00:15:55.28 but no, no... and he goes on and he says, 00:15:55.32\00:15:58.95 "My anger... my anger is going to be kindled against them 00:15:59.02\00:16:03.53 and I will hide my face from them 00:16:03.59\00:16:07.36 and as a result of that, 00:16:07.40\00:16:09.26 many troubles are going to befall my people, 00:16:09.30\00:16:12.63 and eventually the people will recognize 00:16:12.67\00:16:15.90 that these troubles have come upon them 00:16:15.94\00:16:18.97 because I am not in their midst... " 00:16:19.04\00:16:22.04 and, you know, I don't know if Moses' bubble was burst 00:16:22.08\00:16:27.15 a little bit at that... 00:16:27.18\00:16:28.52 at hearing that... but that's what... 00:16:28.55\00:16:30.79 and I like it... at the end of verse 21, 00:16:30.82\00:16:33.39 it says... God is saying, 00:16:33.42\00:16:36.16 "I know their imagination which they go about 00:16:36.19\00:16:39.29 and even now before I have brought them into the land 00:16:39.33\00:16:43.97 which I swear. " 00:16:44.00\00:16:45.70 You know, one of the things that I love about God 00:16:45.73\00:16:48.94 there's lots of things to love about God 00:16:48.97\00:16:50.87 but one of the things that I love about God is, 00:16:50.91\00:16:53.44 He knows what's going to happen before it ever happens. 00:16:53.48\00:16:55.58 Panel: Amen. 00:16:55.61\00:16:56.95 Terry: And you know that's a testimony to us. 00:16:56.98\00:16:59.15 Maybe there's someone watching today 00:16:59.21\00:17:00.92 who's going through some really hard stuff, 00:17:00.98\00:17:02.68 going through things that they don't understand, 00:17:02.75\00:17:04.95 God knows... God sees... 00:17:05.02\00:17:07.26 He knew before it even came to you 00:17:07.29\00:17:09.62 that you were going to go through this trial... 00:17:09.66\00:17:12.46 through this experience... 00:17:12.49\00:17:13.90 and He promises to be with you 00:17:13.93\00:17:15.66 if you want Him to be with you. 00:17:15.70\00:17:17.40 It reminded me of a passage in Isaiah chapter 46 00:17:17.43\00:17:21.04 verses 9 and 10 where God says, 00:17:21.07\00:17:23.00 "Remember the former things of old, 00:17:23.04\00:17:25.61 for I am God, and there is none else, 00:17:25.64\00:17:28.44 I am God, and there is none like Me, 00:17:28.48\00:17:31.08 declaring the end from the beginning, 00:17:31.11\00:17:33.68 and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, 00:17:33.72\00:17:38.05 saying, 'My counsel shall stand, 00:17:38.09\00:17:40.79 and I will do all My pleasure. '" 00:17:40.82\00:17:43.43 God knows... He sees... He understands... 00:17:43.46\00:17:46.09 He knows what's before... long before it ever even comes. 00:17:46.13\00:17:49.16 He knows what you're going to go through, 00:17:49.20\00:17:50.93 He knew what the children of Israel were going to go through. 00:17:50.97\00:17:53.74 Now, let's talk about this witness for a moment, 00:17:53.77\00:17:56.20 as I said before, what is a witness? 00:17:56.24\00:17:59.04 A witness is someone who can testify... 00:17:59.07\00:18:01.74 or something that can testify to what has occurred. 00:18:01.81\00:18:04.91 I don't know if... I've never had personally... 00:18:04.95\00:18:08.02 but I've never had to serve in a Court 00:18:08.05\00:18:09.62 where I've had to be a witness for someone... 00:18:09.65\00:18:11.79 I can only imagine what that would have been like... 00:18:11.82\00:18:13.89 or what that experience would be like... 00:18:13.92\00:18:15.39 but again, you don't want to hear 00:18:15.42\00:18:17.23 that there is someone being called as a witness against you, 00:18:17.26\00:18:20.40 you want to hear from somebody who's going to... 00:18:20.46\00:18:22.00 who's going to testify of your character... 00:18:22.03\00:18:23.80 what... what a good person... 00:18:23.83\00:18:25.17 or you wouldn't have done this thing or whatever... 00:18:25.20\00:18:26.84 but it says, "A witness against you" 00:18:26.87\00:18:30.57 so, the lesson says that Moses speaks of the Book of the Law 00:18:30.61\00:18:36.11 as though it is a living being with power 00:18:36.14\00:18:40.55 to reprove the hearts of men. 00:18:40.58\00:18:42.85 Panel: Amen... praise God. 00:18:42.88\00:18:45.05 Terry: Now, I don't know about you 00:18:45.09\00:18:47.26 but I have heard this... this... this argument many times, 00:18:47.29\00:18:51.23 "Oh, Colossians 2:14 says... " you know, 00:18:51.26\00:18:54.33 "the handwriting of ordinances which is against you" 00:18:54.36\00:18:57.33 my Friends, that is not the Ten commandment law. 00:18:57.37\00:18:59.77 Panel: That's right... that's right, amen. 00:18:59.80\00:19:01.14 Terry: As Sister Shelley just said, 00:19:01.17\00:19:02.50 they put it on the side of the Ark of the Covenant 00:19:02.54\00:19:05.74 that indicated... it would be temporary 00:19:05.77\00:19:07.94 and since when has the Ten Commandments ever been used 00:19:07.98\00:19:10.91 against us, right? Panel: Agreeing. 00:19:10.95\00:19:13.01 Terry: No... no... no... I'm sure many of our Viewers 00:19:13.08\00:19:15.82 have heard the... the illustration 00:19:15.88\00:19:18.25 that, let's say... you're... 00:19:18.29\00:19:20.02 you're outside working in the garden 00:19:20.06\00:19:22.02 and you get dirt on your face or whatever 00:19:22.06\00:19:25.19 now, your eyeballs don't have the ability to see your face... 00:19:25.23\00:19:28.40 so, you don't know that there's dirt on your face 00:19:28.46\00:19:31.03 until you come in and do... what? 00:19:31.07\00:19:32.97 You go to the washroom... you wash up your hands 00:19:33.00\00:19:35.54 and you look at your mirror, and you say, 00:19:35.57\00:19:37.07 "Oh man, look at my face, it's filthy. " 00:19:37.11\00:19:38.54 Does the mirror have the ability to clean your face? 00:19:38.57\00:19:42.01 Panel: No... no... 00:19:42.04\00:19:43.38 Terry: Do the Ten Commandments have the ability 00:19:43.41\00:19:45.15 to correct our sin? 00:19:45.21\00:19:46.55 No... but I love what Jesus said, 00:19:46.58\00:19:48.85 He said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. " 00:19:48.88\00:19:51.62 Panel: That's right. 00:19:51.65\00:19:52.99 Terry: The commandments... ah... the commandments are not 00:19:53.02\00:19:54.82 a way of salvation, 00:19:54.86\00:19:56.32 they are, I'd like to say, "Proof of salvation... " 00:19:56.36\00:19:58.69 Terry: They are evidence that we belong to God 00:19:58.73\00:20:01.66 and we follow His way, so, now we go to... 00:20:01.70\00:20:04.60 go to Paul... Paul is talking in Romans chapter 3, 00:20:04.63\00:20:08.60 in the latter part of the lesson 00:20:08.64\00:20:10.67 and they have us read some very familiar passages 00:20:10.71\00:20:14.68 of Scripture, Romans chapter 3 and beginning with verse 19 00:20:14.71\00:20:17.78 and I'm reading from the Standard King James this morning 00:20:17.81\00:20:20.85 today... and it says, 00:20:20.88\00:20:22.38 "Now we know that what things soever the law says, 00:20:22.42\00:20:26.15 it saith to them that are under the law: 00:20:26.22\00:20:28.62 that every mouth may be stopped, 00:20:28.69\00:20:30.76 and all the world may become guilty before God. 00:20:30.79\00:20:33.46 Therefore by the deeds of the law 00:20:33.50\00:20:35.96 there shall no flesh be... " what? 00:20:36.00\00:20:38.47 "justified" right? 00:20:38.50\00:20:40.37 "in His sight: for by the law is... " what? 00:20:40.40\00:20:43.24 "the knowledge of sin. " 00:20:43.27\00:20:45.21 The law doesn't necessarily correct our sin, 00:20:45.24\00:20:47.94 it doesn't help us to become better, 00:20:47.98\00:20:49.61 but it shows us what our character flaws are 00:20:49.64\00:20:52.88 and then down at the end in verse 23 he says, 00:20:52.91\00:20:56.08 "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. " 00:20:56.12\00:21:00.79 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:21:00.86\00:21:02.29 Terry: You know, when I think about that, 00:21:02.32\00:21:04.13 don't get too down on yourself 00:21:04.16\00:21:06.70 whenever you find that you messed up 00:21:06.73\00:21:08.40 or whenever you find that you make a mistake, for Paul says, 00:21:08.46\00:21:10.97 "All have sinned... " but you know what? 00:21:11.00\00:21:12.53 there's grace found in Jesus... 00:21:12.57\00:21:14.14 there's grace found in the blood of the Lamb 00:21:14.17\00:21:18.37 and even back in verse 10 of chapter 3 there 00:21:18.41\00:21:22.54 it says, "there is none righteous... 00:21:22.58\00:21:24.78 no... not one. " 00:21:24.81\00:21:26.58 Not one... but in Jesus... in Jesus there is victory 00:21:26.61\00:21:31.09 and so, when we talk about a witness against us, 00:21:31.12\00:21:36.19 I like that... they wrap up on Monday's lesson 00:21:36.22\00:21:40.46 by saying, "Even as we seek to obey God's law 00:21:40.50\00:21:44.67 with all our God-given strength, 00:21:44.70\00:21:47.54 in what ways does His law function 00:21:47.57\00:21:50.37 as a witness against us?" 00:21:50.41\00:21:52.74 Unfortunately, the... the... the... the Old Covenant 00:21:52.77\00:21:56.58 the Old Covenant served as that witness against you... 00:21:56.61\00:22:00.35 they... remember as Shelley pointed out 00:22:00.42\00:22:02.65 the first time that God came to them and they said, 00:22:02.68\00:22:05.49 "All that the Lord has spoken, we will do... " 00:25:22.75\00:25:24.85 Now, how many of us don't want to be prosperous and... 00:25:24.89\00:25:28.06 and succeed in whatever we're doing, right? 00:25:28.09\00:25:29.99 So, there you have it... the key to prosperity and success 00:25:30.03\00:25:33.46 is to meditate on the law of God day and night 00:25:33.50\00:25:37.00 and then, to do it... 00:25:37.03\00:25:38.37 "do" is an action word, I would say, 00:25:38.40\00:25:40.30 do according to what is written in that law. 00:25:40.34\00:25:43.30 So, first of all, God wants His people to prosper 00:25:43.34\00:25:46.51 and be successful, do you agree with that? 00:25:46.54\00:25:48.81 In fact, He wants us "to prosper... 00:25:48.84\00:25:51.08 be in good health... " it says, 00:25:51.11\00:25:53.31 I threw in Jeremiah 29:11 that I'm sure you all know, 00:25:53.35\00:25:56.92 "For I know the plans I have for you," 00:25:56.95\00:25:59.72 declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you 00:25:59.75\00:26:02.49 and not to harm you, 00:26:02.52\00:26:04.03 plans to give you hope and a future. " 00:26:04.06\00:26:06.19 Isn't that... that's the loving God 00:26:06.23\00:26:07.90 that you all were talking about... 00:26:07.93\00:26:09.50 Terry, you were just talking about 00:26:09.53\00:26:11.17 that's... that's on our side... 00:26:11.20\00:26:12.73 He... He's the witness for us not against us. 00:26:12.77\00:26:16.14 So, if we are to reflect God's character in our lives, 00:26:16.20\00:26:19.67 then I think it's safe to say we need to be happy 00:26:19.71\00:26:22.38 and healthy and prosperous, right? 00:26:22.44\00:26:24.81 And we should see it in whatever we're doing 00:26:24.85\00:26:27.35 but so... here is the... the key though... 00:26:27.38\00:26:29.82 the key word would be, "How do we define success 00:26:29.85\00:26:32.75 and prosperity?" 00:26:32.79\00:26:34.12 Because everybody... it's going to mean something differently 00:26:34.16\00:26:37.49 so, we can read the Scripture and say, 00:26:37.53\00:26:39.43 some business person can say, 00:26:39.49\00:26:41.73 "Wow! I'm fulfilling the Scriptures 00:26:41.76\00:26:44.77 because I'm very successful in my business. " 00:26:44.80\00:26:47.04 Somebody else says, "Well, hey, I'm... I'm very prosperous 00:26:47.07\00:26:50.71 in... in... in what I do... " 00:26:50.74\00:26:52.31 but let's see... let's try to define it a little bit 00:26:52.34\00:26:55.18 work in to it. 00:26:55.21\00:26:56.54 The key here again... how do we define success and prosperity? 00:26:56.58\00:27:00.65 The secular world defines it, "Success is money... power... 00:27:00.72\00:27:04.85 and influence... " right? 00:27:04.89\00:27:06.65 In general, there's other things... 00:27:06.69\00:27:08.02 but in general 00:27:08.06\00:27:09.76 but it's not like the secular world versus the church 00:27:09.79\00:27:13.03 or... or Christians because honestly within Christianity 00:27:13.06\00:27:17.07 there is counterfeit prosperity 00:27:17.10\00:27:19.63 which brings me... if you ever watch radio and television, 00:27:19.67\00:27:22.57 there's a whole lot of televangelists 00:27:22.60\00:27:24.67 that preaches what is called "A Prosperity Gospel... " 00:27:24.71\00:27:27.11 Panel: That's right. 00:27:27.14\00:27:28.48 Danny: Now, let's talk about that prosperity gospel 00:27:28.51\00:27:30.55 for just a little bit... what it really... 00:27:30.58\00:27:32.71 and I'll just do it in a nutshell... 00:27:32.75\00:27:34.12 I made a lot of notes and I'll go through all of that 00:27:34.15\00:27:36.28 but in a nutshell, it says, 00:27:36.35\00:27:38.32 "Listen, if you want God to bless you, 00:27:38.35\00:27:40.46 then, whatever you send to me... " 00:27:40.49\00:27:42.46 that's the televangelist talking 00:27:42.49\00:27:44.39 "God will bless it a hundredfold. " 00:27:44.43\00:27:46.36 So, if you've got... one man said... 00:27:46.39\00:27:48.46 "if you got an old Cadillac... " you know, 00:27:48.50\00:27:50.40 or got a... he just said, he changed it... 00:27:50.47\00:27:52.33 he didn't want an old Cadillac 00:27:52.37\00:27:53.70 but... "if you got a good Cadillac 00:27:53.74\00:27:55.07 and you donate it to me, 00:27:55.10\00:27:56.44 God will give you a brand-new one. " 00:27:56.47\00:27:57.87 That's called prosperity 00:27:57.94\00:27:59.54 so, if you give to that Prosperity Preacher 00:27:59.57\00:28:02.61 according to them... prosperity and success 00:28:02.64\00:28:05.65 God is going to measure that out to you 00:28:05.68\00:28:08.62 but I found out... my experience has told me 00:28:08.65\00:28:10.75 and when you get my age, 00:28:10.79\00:28:12.12 you start getting a little experience 00:28:12.15\00:28:13.49 if nothing else... 00:28:13.52\00:28:14.86 is that usually the only ones becoming healthy 00:28:14.89\00:28:17.33 and wealthy are the prosperity teachers 00:28:17.36\00:28:19.89 because it doesn't always work that way. 00:28:19.93\00:28:22.40 Now, does God bless your giving in the support of His work? 00:28:22.43\00:28:26.63 Absolutely... 00:28:26.67\00:28:28.00 Will, He multiplies when you're giving to His cause? 00:28:28.04\00:28:31.14 Absolutely. 00:28:31.17\00:28:32.51 Can you prosper? 00:28:32.54\00:28:33.98 Absolutely, you can but I want to say here... 00:28:34.01\00:28:36.85 so, what is the Scripture talking about 00:28:36.88\00:28:39.41 when it says... when it says right here 00:28:39.45\00:28:41.88 that we will prosper and we'll be successful. 00:28:41.95\00:28:45.02 Now, could it mean that we will be prosperous in business 00:28:45.05\00:28:49.46 and that we will be successful in our business? 00:28:49.52\00:28:52.49 Of course, that is one of the definitions it could be. 00:28:52.53\00:28:55.76 I think a lot of these prosperity preachers 00:28:55.80\00:28:59.43 should be teaching the truth and that truth is 00:28:59.47\00:29:02.77 that our knowledge... we prosper spiritually 00:29:02.80\00:29:05.51 by keeping and obeying the commandments of God. 00:29:05.54\00:29:08.18 Most of those... 00:29:08.21\00:29:09.54 many of those already as you guys have mentioned 00:29:09.58\00:29:12.65 have said, "Well, they're nailed to the cross... " 00:29:12.71\00:29:15.15 would you say? Colossians... you brought up... 00:29:15.18\00:29:17.15 Colossians... they're nailed to the cross. 00:29:17.19\00:29:19.05 No... the Ten Commandments were not nailed to the cross, 00:29:19.09\00:29:22.22 so, success means a number of things... 00:29:22.26\00:29:25.33 prosperity and success does not always fit the description... 00:29:25.36\00:29:28.86 I wrote down... of how the world judges prosperity 00:29:28.90\00:29:31.57 and success. 00:29:31.60\00:29:33.03 What... let's look at it like this, 00:29:33.07\00:29:34.97 what prosperous, wealthy person 00:29:35.00\00:29:37.11 who is really old and sick wouldn't trade, right, 00:29:37.17\00:29:41.01 his treasure... his... his prosperous life, right? 00:29:41.04\00:29:44.75 and successful business for youth and... and... 00:29:44.78\00:29:48.48 and... and health? 00:29:48.52\00:29:50.05 Right? because when we get down to the end, 00:29:50.09\00:29:52.65 we find out that what the world judges 00:29:52.69\00:29:54.66 as prosperous and successful 00:29:54.72\00:29:57.06 does not line up to the Bible. 00:29:57.09\00:29:59.36 So, while we as Christians can enjoy good health 00:29:59.39\00:30:02.40 and prosper in business, 00:30:02.43\00:30:03.77 I believe the bigger picture 00:30:03.80\00:30:05.27 of prosperity and success comes from knowing 00:30:05.30\00:30:08.57 and obeying the law of God. 00:30:08.60\00:30:10.47 Why is that? 00:30:10.51\00:30:11.84 Because in the law of God we find eternal life. 00:30:11.87\00:30:13.94 Only then can we trust God with our lives 00:30:13.98\00:30:16.75 and with our talents and abilities that He's given us 00:30:16.78\00:30:19.81 so, prospering in your Christian walk with the Lord 00:30:19.88\00:30:22.88 and prospering in your ministry 00:30:22.92\00:30:24.42 fulfilling the great gospel commission of 00:30:24.45\00:30:27.16 "Go ye into all the world... " 00:30:27.19\00:30:28.69 for me it says... in the preparing... 00:30:28.72\00:30:33.06 and preparing our family and ourselves for heaven 00:30:33.09\00:30:35.93 is the greatest success we can attain. 00:30:35.96\00:30:38.70 Getting our lives and those around us 00:30:38.73\00:30:41.47 witnessing for Jesus... 00:30:41.50\00:30:43.07 that to me is true prosperity and true success. 00:30:43.10\00:30:47.14 So, to set the record straight again, 00:30:47.18\00:30:49.61 prosperity and success is not measured 00:30:49.64\00:30:52.01 by how much money we have... 00:30:52.08\00:30:53.42 how much power and how much influence we have, 00:30:53.45\00:30:56.12 it's measured by eternal life. 00:30:56.15\00:30:58.12 Did we answer the call of God on our lives 00:30:58.15\00:31:00.66 and be a witness for Him 00:31:00.69\00:31:02.42 and submit and commit our lives to Jesus 00:31:02.46\00:31:04.59 or did we turn away as the world says 00:31:04.66\00:31:06.73 to do our own thing and decide to live our own life. 00:31:06.80\00:31:10.17 Joshua here tells us that if we keep focused on the law of God, 00:31:10.20\00:31:13.84 we meditated on it day and night, 00:31:13.87\00:31:16.34 and that we'll obey it... we will prosper 00:31:16.37\00:31:19.21 and we'll succeed. 00:31:19.24\00:31:20.58 Now, to me 3ABN... and of course maybe I'm a little prejudiced 00:31:20.61\00:31:24.48 but 3ABN is a great example of a success 00:31:24.51\00:31:28.35 after 35 years of ministry 00:31:28.38\00:31:30.95 starting with nothing and now able to reach the world 00:31:30.99\00:31:34.06 okay, so the question may be asked, 00:31:34.09\00:31:36.76 "What is the secret to 3ABN's success?" 00:31:36.79\00:31:38.96 First, I'll tell you what it's not... 00:31:38.99\00:31:41.16 okay, what it's not... 00:31:41.20\00:31:42.93 it's not because of any of the leadership 00:31:42.96\00:31:45.13 or any of the messengers 00:31:45.17\00:31:46.50 because none of us are perfect, 00:31:46.53\00:31:48.80 I hate to tell you all this but none of us... 00:31:48.84\00:31:50.77 we are all imperfect vessels... 00:31:50.81\00:31:52.61 so are you at home... don't be laughing... 00:31:52.64\00:31:54.78 so... so you are too... we're all imperfect... 00:31:54.81\00:31:56.91 the correct answer in my opinion is this, 00:31:56.95\00:31:59.81 God gave 3ABN the commission 00:31:59.85\00:32:02.25 of taking an undiluted 3 Angels' messages 00:32:02.28\00:32:04.65 one that would counteract the counterfeit 00:32:04.69\00:32:07.06 into all the world 00:32:07.09\00:32:08.86 and for 35 years... 00:32:08.92\00:32:10.63 that's exactly what we've been preaching. 00:32:10.66\00:32:12.86 Now, there are many who started out 00:32:12.89\00:32:15.26 whether it be George Vandeman... Joe Crews... 00:32:15.30\00:32:17.57 even Kenneth Cox... 00:32:17.60\00:32:18.97 many of those are asleep in Jesus, 00:32:19.00\00:32:20.84 many have been preaching this message for years, 00:32:20.87\00:32:24.11 but the new Ryan Days and the Terry Sheltons 00:32:24.14\00:32:27.34 and all the young ones you see are preaching the same message, 00:32:27.38\00:32:30.21 they didn't deviate... 00:32:30.25\00:32:31.58 3ABN has not gone to the left... we've not gone to the right 00:32:31.61\00:32:35.75 so, what's important is not the messenger... 00:32:35.78\00:32:38.05 it's... it's the message. 00:32:38.12\00:32:39.59 Panel: That's right... yeah. 00:32:39.62\00:32:41.02 Danny: So, if we will stick as this Scripture said 00:32:41.06\00:32:44.16 to the law of God, we'll meditate on it day and night 00:32:44.19\00:32:47.20 that we don't go to the right... or we don't go to the left... 00:32:47.23\00:32:50.50 and we say, "Lord, I'm putting my life into your hand... " 00:32:50.53\00:32:53.74 so, to me the success is 3ABN. 00:32:53.77\00:32:55.97 You think about a ministry that for so many years... 00:32:56.00\00:32:59.24 year after year after year... 00:32:59.27\00:33:01.41 and all the millions of dollars it takes 00:33:01.44\00:33:03.35 without doing beg-a-thons and prosperity gospel 00:33:03.38\00:33:06.11 somehow, all the bills are paid when it comes to the end. 00:33:06.18\00:33:08.78 I mean, to me, that is absolutely amazing 00:33:08.85\00:33:12.22 so, I'm running out... I'm looking at that clock 00:33:12.25\00:33:14.26 and now it's being a witness and against me, Terry... 00:33:14.29\00:33:16.36 Panel: Laughter. 00:33:16.39\00:33:17.73 Danny: So, all I want to say to you is the... the... 00:33:17.76\00:33:21.13 that God's Word equips us to overcome sin 00:33:21.16\00:33:23.57 by the blood of the Lamb 00:33:23.60\00:33:25.03 and so, today realize we're in a... 00:33:25.07\00:33:27.70 there's a war raging, 00:33:27.77\00:33:29.10 you and I are in this battle between good and evil... 00:33:29.14\00:33:32.11 the great controversy between... between good and evil 00:33:32.14\00:33:35.24 and so, the devil is out to get us... to deceive us 00:33:35.28\00:33:38.38 but we can always trust in the Lord, 00:33:38.41\00:33:40.85 so Terry said it beautifully, 00:33:40.88\00:33:42.45 that all we have to do is submit and commit our lives to Jesus 00:33:42.48\00:33:45.75 and say, "Lord, create within me a new heart... I'm a sinner... " 00:33:45.79\00:33:49.02 and if we confess our sins 00:33:49.06\00:33:50.79 He is faithful and just to forgive us from our sins 00:33:50.83\00:33:53.33 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 00:33:53.36\00:33:56.50 What a wonderful God we serve 00:33:56.56\00:33:58.87 and I hope today that each and every one of you, 00:33:58.90\00:34:01.34 if you've not already made your choice for Jesus 00:34:01.37\00:34:03.81 that you do it today. 00:34:03.84\00:34:05.17 Panel: Hmmm... amen... 00:34:05.24\00:34:06.57 Ryan: Praise the Lord... you just... 00:34:06.61\00:34:08.01 you made my job easier as far as mine goes... 00:34:08.04\00:34:10.75 and, I believe, it's Wednesday's lesson: 00:34:10.78\00:34:13.11 The Toils and Struggles of Law Keepers 00:34:13.15\00:34:15.42 there's also an aspect of talking about prosperity 00:34:15.45\00:34:18.65 in connection with law keeping 00:34:18.69\00:34:20.02 and that happens to be one of the questions 00:34:20.06\00:34:22.46 that comes up often 00:34:22.49\00:34:24.13 and that is... the "what ifs" and the "whys" 00:34:24.16\00:34:26.39 of... of... you know... there's this promise... 00:34:26.43\00:34:29.16 for instance you gave... I think you gave Joshua as an example, 00:34:29.20\00:34:33.27 the lesson brings out that Joshua closely followed 00:34:33.30\00:34:35.54 God's precepts 00:34:35.57\00:34:37.04 and he led the people of Israel well, 00:34:37.07\00:34:38.67 and of course, time and time again 00:34:38.71\00:34:40.28 the Lord tells Israel that if they obey the law 00:34:40.31\00:34:42.11 that they would prosper 00:34:42.14\00:34:43.68 and so, you see this promise there 00:34:43.71\00:34:45.25 but then within the home... 00:34:45.28\00:34:47.08 and we're talking about education, right? 00:34:47.12\00:34:48.58 We're talking about... let's just get into the family now 00:34:48.65\00:34:51.15 the home within the family... 00:34:51.19\00:34:52.62 sometimes those tough questions come up, 00:34:52.65\00:34:53.99 you know, those teenagers come to mom and dad 00:34:54.02\00:34:55.99 and they say, "Hey, you know... 00:34:56.02\00:34:57.36 I've been trying to keep the law... " 00:34:57.39\00:34:58.86 okay, I'll come back to that... "trying to keep the law 00:34:58.89\00:35:01.63 and God said that we would prosper and all this 00:35:01.66\00:35:03.90 but I'm not prospering... what's going on?" 00:35:03.93\00:35:06.50 And there's multiple examples also in Scripture 00:35:06.53\00:35:08.97 where a lot of people... they allow... they... 00:35:09.00\00:35:11.34 they twist and use the Word of God against themselves 00:35:11.37\00:35:14.18 as a witness against themselves, how you can do that? 00:35:14.21\00:35:16.81 I don't know... 00:35:16.85\00:35:18.21 but people sometimes take the Word of God 00:35:18.25\00:35:19.78 and they'll twist it to their own destruction 00:35:19.81\00:35:21.82 and allow certain aspects of Scriptures to discourage them 00:35:21.85\00:35:25.29 because they believe it's contradicting 00:35:25.32\00:35:27.26 one aspect or the other. 00:35:27.29\00:35:28.62 The lesson brings out and gives a few examples, 00:35:28.66\00:35:31.29 John the Baptist is probably a prime example, 00:35:31.33\00:35:34.33 at least one example. 00:35:34.36\00:35:35.76 I mean the Bible says that John the Baptist 00:35:35.80\00:35:37.23 Jesus called him the greatest of all prophets, right? 00:35:37.27\00:35:39.93 I mean, this man was full of the Holy Spirit from the womb 00:35:40.00\00:35:43.04 and he came out preaching and declaring the way of the Lord 00:35:43.07\00:35:46.07 to make straight the path for Jesus to come on the scene, 00:35:46.11\00:35:48.94 and this brother ends up in jail 00:35:48.98\00:35:51.51 and, of course, a harlot convinces the king 00:35:51.55\00:35:55.78 to give me his head on a platter... 00:35:55.82\00:35:57.45 and you're thinking, "No... this is God's man... " right? 00:35:57.49\00:35:59.45 He keeps the commandments of God... 00:35:59.49\00:36:01.39 he's obedient... he does all the Lord has said, 00:36:01.42\00:36:03.46 he's the greatest of all the prophets, 00:36:03.49\00:36:05.03 surely, the Lord will protect him... 00:36:05.06\00:36:06.96 he will be prosperous throughout all of his days upon this earth, 00:36:07.00\00:36:10.63 and then, you can imagine, you know, inside that jail cell, 00:36:10.67\00:36:14.60 John the Baptist is praying, and saying, 00:36:14.64\00:36:16.10 "You know, Lord, I know You're going to bring me through... " 00:36:16.17\00:36:17.77 I know... he even sent out his guys to Jesus, right? 00:36:17.81\00:36:20.68 sent them to Jesus... confirmed... 00:36:20.71\00:36:22.84 just to make sure He's the right guy... 00:36:22.88\00:36:24.21 "Oh yeah, I knew it, Jesus is going to show up... 00:36:24.25\00:36:25.91 any moment, Jesus is going to bust me out of jail... " 00:36:25.95\00:36:29.15 and then came the day... and what did he get from God? 00:36:29.18\00:36:32.35 Silence... 00:36:32.39\00:36:34.46 you know, that's... that's a tough deal. 00:36:34.49\00:36:36.36 Another Example would be job, right? 00:36:36.39\00:36:38.26 The Bible says that Job was a perfect man 00:36:38.29\00:36:40.46 in the eyes of the Lord, 00:36:40.50\00:36:41.83 he was the obedient person... 00:36:41.86\00:36:43.30 he kept all of God's commandments, 00:36:43.33\00:36:44.67 and... but yet... we see that the story of Job there... 00:36:44.70\00:36:47.50 in fact, there's a clear implied accusation in that... 00:36:47.54\00:36:50.37 in that heavenly council meeting that Satan shows up to, 00:36:50.41\00:36:53.24 and it's so sad to see that Satan is there 00:36:53.27\00:36:56.34 and he basically accuses God and basically says, 00:36:56.38\00:36:59.21 "Oh, no, no, no... you're only... 00:36:59.25\00:37:01.02 the only reason why he's serving you 00:37:01.05\00:37:02.75 is because you're causing him to be prosperous 00:37:02.78\00:37:04.92 and you got a hedge your protection around him, 00:37:04.95\00:37:07.06 you lift that hedge of protection... 00:37:07.09\00:37:09.16 you take away all of his goodies... 00:37:09.19\00:37:11.19 and watch him curse you to his... to... to your face... " 00:37:11.23\00:37:14.36 in other words, what Satan was implying was 00:37:14.43\00:37:16.50 "God... you and... you in of yourself 00:37:16.56\00:37:18.27 are not worthy to be worshipped. " 00:37:18.30\00:37:19.73 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:37:19.80\00:37:21.14 Ryan: And so, a lot of people... they read these stories 00:37:21.17\00:37:23.51 and they get discouraged... 00:37:23.54\00:37:25.01 Paul... take up Paul... 00:37:25.04\00:37:26.44 Read this... 2nd Corinthians 11:23 through 29 00:37:26.47\00:37:30.31 you read this list and you think, 00:37:30.35\00:37:32.31 "Man, this is the direct opposite of prosperity, right? 00:37:32.38\00:37:35.95 I mean, Paul was... he wasn't a perfect man, 00:37:35.98\00:37:38.55 he made mistakes obviously, 00:37:38.59\00:37:40.06 but from the moment that God called him, 00:37:40.09\00:37:41.86 this brother was growing and growing and growing 00:37:41.92\00:37:44.29 in God's grace... he was an obedient serviceman of the Lord 00:37:44.33\00:37:47.83 but listen to this list here, starting with verse 23, 00:37:47.86\00:37:50.67 2nd Corinthians chapter 11, it says, 00:37:50.70\00:37:53.10 "Are they ministers of Christ? 00:37:53.13\00:37:55.77 I speak as a fool... " notice what he says, 00:37:55.80\00:37:58.27 he says, "I am more; in labors more abundant, 00:37:58.31\00:38:00.78 in stripes above measure, 00:38:00.81\00:38:03.51 in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. 00:38:03.55\00:38:07.05 From the Jews, five times I received 00:38:07.08\00:38:10.05 forty stripes minus one. 00:38:10.09\00:38:11.59 Three times I was beaten with rods, 00:38:11.62\00:38:13.46 once I was stoned, 00:38:13.49\00:38:14.82 three times I was shipwrecked, 00:38:14.86\00:38:16.52 a night and a day I have been in the deep; 00:38:16.56\00:38:19.59 in journeys often, in perils of waters, 00:38:19.63\00:38:22.66 in perils of robbers, 00:38:22.70\00:38:24.03 in perils of my own countrymen, 00:38:24.07\00:38:25.57 in perils of the gentiles, 00:38:25.60\00:38:26.94 in perils of the city, 00:38:26.97\00:38:28.30 in perils of the wilderness, 00:38:28.34\00:38:29.67 in perils of the sea, 00:38:29.70\00:38:31.04 in perils among false brethren; 00:38:31.07\00:38:32.41 in weariness and toil and sleepless, 00:38:32.44\00:38:34.88 often in hunger and thirst, 00:38:34.91\00:38:36.24 in fastings often, 00:38:36.28\00:38:37.61 in cold and nakedness. 00:38:37.65\00:38:38.98 Besides all these other things, what comes upon me daily, 00:38:39.01\00:38:41.52 my deep concern for all the churches. " 00:38:41.55\00:38:43.59 So, it's interesting, you read that list there, 00:38:43.62\00:38:45.79 it's like, "Man! God... You... You gave a promise, 00:38:45.82\00:38:47.96 did this brother prosper?" 00:38:47.99\00:38:50.59 And I think it goes back to what Danny was saying 00:38:50.63\00:38:52.19 which... I love the way you brought that out, 00:38:52.26\00:38:53.80 we got to question and ask ourselves, 00:38:53.86\00:38:55.50 "What is prosperity?" 00:38:55.53\00:38:56.87 When the Bible says that you shall prosper, 00:38:56.90\00:38:58.77 if you are obedient to God 00:38:58.83\00:39:00.67 and you are faithful to the Lord, 00:39:00.70\00:39:02.04 does it mean that you're going to have two Ferraris 00:39:02.07\00:39:04.14 and ten million dollars in the bank 00:39:04.17\00:39:05.77 but yet, that's exactly as Brother Danny brought out 00:39:05.81\00:39:08.41 and I try not to get too deep into this 00:39:08.44\00:39:11.35 because I get a little... little heated sometimes 00:39:11.38\00:39:13.28 when I get in this conversation 00:39:13.31\00:39:14.65 but all of these prosperity evangelists... 00:39:14.68\00:39:16.25 these televangelists that are out there 00:39:16.28\00:39:17.89 preaching and teaching of, "Sow this seed 00:39:17.92\00:39:19.25 and sow that seed... " 00:39:19.29\00:39:20.62 and as you brought out very clearly, 00:39:20.66\00:39:21.99 you know, deceiving people into believing 00:39:22.02\00:39:23.89 that the gospel is about how much money you give 00:39:23.93\00:39:26.73 so that you can get even more in return... 00:39:26.76\00:39:28.43 and we know that there are instances 00:39:28.46\00:39:30.67 I've even been on the receiving end of a blessing, 00:39:30.70\00:39:33.40 of prosperous financial blessing 00:39:33.44\00:39:35.34 because I was able to share or give to God's cause 00:39:35.37\00:39:38.47 but that... nowhere in God's Word does God say, 00:39:38.51\00:39:40.98 "Hey give me money and I'll give you more money. " 00:39:41.01\00:39:43.41 You know, "Serve me and be obedient to me 00:39:43.45\00:39:46.01 and I'll just flood you with all kinds of money 00:39:46.08\00:39:47.75 and all kinds of financial blessing... " 00:39:47.78\00:39:49.22 that's not what we're talking about 00:39:49.28\00:39:50.62 when it says, "Prosperity. " 00:39:50.65\00:39:51.99 The ultimate prosperity that we want is a spiritual prosperity. 00:39:52.02\00:39:54.62 Panel: Amen. 00:39:54.66\00:39:55.99 Ryan: We want to be... we want to be prosperous 00:39:56.02\00:39:57.76 in faith, hope and love in Jesus Christ... 00:39:57.79\00:40:00.00 that's what the gospel is about... 00:40:00.03\00:40:01.63 I think of probably the greatest example of all 00:40:01.66\00:40:03.90 of someone who really... you could probably say... 00:40:03.97\00:40:06.13 probably lost more than anyone who is less prosperous... 00:40:06.17\00:40:08.64 I mean, what was Jesus? 00:40:08.67\00:40:10.17 Panel: Hmmm... 00:40:10.21\00:40:11.54 Ryan: I mean Jesus was... 00:40:11.57\00:40:12.91 there's no one else in the history of man 00:40:12.94\00:40:15.51 that was perfect... literally... 00:40:15.54\00:40:17.08 He never sinned... 00:40:17.11\00:40:18.58 He kept God's commandments 24/7 00:40:18.61\00:40:21.45 throughout His entire life 00:40:21.48\00:40:22.98 and at the end of His days, hanging on a cross, 00:40:23.02\00:40:25.42 what kind of response did He get from His Father? 00:40:25.45\00:40:27.86 Silence... 00:40:27.89\00:40:29.22 Panel: Hmmm... Ryan: Silence... 00:40:29.26\00:40:30.66 does that mean that... you know, do we... 00:40:30.69\00:40:33.60 do we look at those instances and we question, 00:40:33.63\00:40:35.20 "Oh God didn't keep His promise... " 00:40:35.23\00:40:36.56 No, no, no, no... we have to... 00:40:36.60\00:40:37.93 as C.S. Lewis would say, 00:40:37.97\00:40:39.33 "Sometimes we have to... we must address the assumptions 00:40:39.40\00:40:42.44 and the question before we answer the question... " 00:40:42.47\00:40:44.27 and a lot of people naturally assume that prosperity means... 00:40:44.31\00:40:46.98 as we've described... 00:40:47.04\00:40:48.38 you know, lots of financial blessing... 00:40:48.41\00:40:50.01 lots of worldly success 00:40:50.05\00:40:51.85 but God.. what He does want us to be financially prosperous 00:40:51.88\00:40:55.32 in the sense that our needs are met 00:40:55.35\00:40:57.32 and that we are, you know, not necessarily 00:40:57.39\00:41:00.09 wanting in every single aspect of life, 00:41:00.16\00:41:02.82 but more than anything, Jesus died on the cross 00:41:02.86\00:41:04.99 so that we can be rich in Him and rich in spirituality 00:41:05.03\00:41:08.46 rich in Jesus Christ and in the Holy Spirit, 00:41:08.50\00:41:11.03 so, David says in Psalm 84 verse 10, 00:41:11.07\00:41:15.27 I love this, he says, 00:41:15.30\00:41:16.64 "I would rather be a doorkeeper 00:41:16.67\00:41:18.01 in the house of my God, 00:41:18.04\00:41:19.37 than dwell in the tents of the wickedness... " 00:41:19.41\00:41:20.74 woooo... that's a powerful thing, 00:41:20.78\00:41:23.01 I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, 00:41:23.04\00:41:26.01 than dwell in the tents of wickedness... 00:41:26.05\00:41:28.48 and that should be our... our saying as well. 00:41:28.52\00:41:31.42 That should be where our heart is 00:41:31.45\00:41:32.79 man, I'm watching that clock, pray for that clock... 00:41:32.82\00:41:34.52 I'm with you, Danny, on that. 00:41:34.59\00:41:35.92 So, what is the answer, how do we answer this? 00:41:35.96\00:41:37.66 First of all, we see brothers and sisters... 00:41:37.69\00:41:39.73 there seems to be... like the Pauls 00:41:39.76\00:41:42.53 and the John the Baptists and the Jobs... 00:41:42.56\00:41:45.03 you know, many of us have to... 00:41:45.07\00:41:46.40 we see... we see each other's struggle, 00:41:46.43\00:41:47.77 we see others struggle and it's like, 00:41:47.80\00:41:49.14 "Man! that brother and sister... 00:41:49.17\00:41:50.51 that's a commandment-keeping person, 00:41:50.54\00:41:52.41 that's... that's... that's... that's of the remnant 00:41:52.44\00:41:54.81 but they're struggling... " how do we answer that? 00:41:54.84\00:41:56.68 Again, it kind of goes back to the question 00:41:56.71\00:41:58.45 that people often ask, "Why do good things happen... " 00:41:58.51\00:42:00.48 or excuse me, "Why do bad things happen 00:42:00.52\00:42:02.18 to good people?" right? 00:42:02.22\00:42:03.85 and I think Pastor Lomacang set me straight one day on that, 00:42:03.89\00:42:06.99 he said, "Yeah... that's a... " 00:42:07.02\00:42:08.62 goes back to that C.S. Lewis thing, 00:42:08.66\00:42:10.09 he said, "You're assuming that there's... that everyone is good 00:42:10.13\00:42:12.13 that there's good people... 00:42:12.16\00:42:13.50 remember that there's none... none good but one 00:42:13.53\00:42:16.43 and that's Jesus Christ... " 00:42:16.46\00:42:17.80 but that being said, my Friends, 00:42:17.83\00:42:19.17 I think there are examples in Scripture that we can give, 00:42:19.20\00:42:21.70 first of all, we have to be remembered 00:42:21.74\00:42:23.27 or reminded that in Isaiah 55 verses 8 and 9, 00:42:23.30\00:42:26.27 God said... He says to us, 00:42:26.31\00:42:27.88 "Look, my thoughts are not your thoughts, 00:42:27.91\00:42:29.71 nor my ways your ways" says the Lord. 00:42:29.74\00:42:31.91 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, 00:42:31.98\00:42:33.58 so are my ways higher than yours, 00:42:33.62\00:42:35.22 and my thoughts than your thoughts. " 00:42:35.25\00:42:37.25 God knows what's best for you and for me 00:42:37.29\00:42:39.25 and sometimes God will allow us to experience things 00:42:39.29\00:42:43.49 or go through certain trials and tribulations in our life 00:42:43.53\00:42:46.03 even as commandment keepers 00:42:46.06\00:42:48.46 because He's wanting to build character, 00:42:48.53\00:42:51.23 that Scripture that comes to mind is James chapter 1 00:42:51.27\00:42:53.13 verses 2 through 4, I love this text, 00:42:53.17\00:42:55.27 he says, "My brethren, count it all joy 00:42:55.30\00:42:56.94 when you fall into various trials... " 00:42:56.97\00:42:58.54 how many of us fall into these various trials and tribulations 00:42:58.57\00:43:01.51 and throw our hands and then say, 00:43:01.54\00:43:02.91 "Praise God for all of these horrible things 00:43:02.94\00:43:05.15 that are happening to me. " 00:43:05.21\00:43:06.61 You know, we don't do that often, right? 00:43:06.65\00:43:07.98 because in our carnal human nature, 00:43:08.02\00:43:09.35 all we can see sometimes in the moment is, 00:43:09.38\00:43:11.32 "Man, why is this happening to me?" 00:43:11.35\00:43:12.69 But a true spiritual person is going to realize 00:43:12.72\00:43:15.52 that as the Bible says, when we... 00:43:15.56\00:43:17.33 when we fall into these various trials, 00:43:17.36\00:43:18.86 we praise God for that... we count it a joy because 00:43:18.89\00:43:21.63 we know that it is... our faith is being tested 00:43:21.66\00:43:24.37 and then it produces patience... the Bible says 00:43:24.43\00:43:27.14 "But let patience... " as James says verse 4... 00:43:27.17\00:43:29.84 again this is James 1 verse 4, 00:43:29.87\00:43:31.31 "But let patience have its perfect work, 00:43:31.34\00:43:33.61 that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. " 00:43:33.64\00:43:36.64 So, let me set the record straight here, 00:43:36.68\00:43:38.11 if you're someone at home 00:43:38.15\00:43:39.48 that's been questioning the Word of God, 00:43:39.51\00:43:40.85 questioning... you know... 00:43:40.88\00:43:42.22 "You know what I've been... I've been trying to be good 00:43:42.25\00:43:43.59 but it doesn't seem like anything is good... 00:43:43.62\00:43:45.15 good is happening to me... " 00:43:45.19\00:43:46.52 my friends, let me tell you something, 00:43:46.55\00:43:47.89 God is not causing those bad things to happen to you, 00:43:47.92\00:43:50.06 Jesus clarified in Matthew 13, 00:43:50.13\00:43:52.39 in the parable of the wheat and the tares, 00:43:52.43\00:43:54.26 He made it very, very, very clear... 00:43:54.30\00:43:56.16 He said, "An enemy has done this... "Behold the Lamb of God 00:44:53.49\00:44:55.72 that takes away the sin of the world. " 00:44:55.76\00:44:57.79 He was our perfect substitute, our perfect Savior 00:44:57.83\00:45:00.66 but He was also our perfect example. 00:45:00.70\00:45:03.43 That's what we look at today... 00:45:03.47\00:45:06.37 Jesus is our example in obedience. 00:45:06.43\00:45:09.24 I want to start with a poem I really like, 00:45:09.30\00:45:12.14 this is by Edgar Guest, "Sermons We See" 00:45:12.17\00:45:15.04 you've probably heard this, 00:45:15.08\00:45:16.41 we'll just quote a couple of stanzas: 00:45:16.44\00:45:17.91 I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day; 00:45:17.95\00:45:21.35 I'd rather one should walk with me 00:45:21.38\00:45:23.45 than merely show the way. 00:45:23.49\00:45:25.62 The eye's a better pupil and more willing than the ear, 00:45:25.65\00:45:29.72 Fine counsel is confusing, 00:45:29.76\00:45:31.79 but example... it's always clear; 00:45:31.83\00:45:34.06 And the best of all the preachers 00:45:34.10\00:45:36.56 are the men who live their creeds, 00:45:36.60\00:45:39.00 For to see good put in action is what everybody needs. 00:45:39.03\00:45:42.87 I soon can learn to do it if you'll let me see it done; 00:45:42.90\00:45:46.74 I can watch your hands in action, 00:45:46.78\00:45:49.18 though your tongue too fast may run. 00:45:49.24\00:45:51.61 And the lecture you may deliver 00:45:51.65\00:45:53.48 may be very wise and true, 00:45:53.52\00:45:55.58 But I'd rather get my lesson by observing what you do; 00:45:55.62\00:45:59.79 For I might misunderstand you and the high advice you give, 00:45:59.82\00:46:03.66 But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live. 00:46:03.73\00:46:07.50 One good man teaches many, men believe what they behold; 00:46:07.56\00:46:12.50 One deed of kindness noticed is worth forty that are told. 00:46:12.53\00:46:17.21 Who stands with men of honor learns to hold this honor dear, 00:46:17.24\00:46:22.24 For right living speaks a language 00:46:22.28\00:46:24.71 which to everyone is clear. 00:46:24.75\00:46:27.15 Though an able speaker charms me with his eloquence, I say, 00:46:27.18\00:46:31.19 I'd rather see a sermon than hear one, any day. 00:46:31.22\00:46:35.86 Panel: Amen... 00:46:35.89\00:46:37.23 Jill: And that's what the Lord Jesus Christ did 00:46:37.26\00:46:40.10 when He came to this earth as a baby, 00:46:40.13\00:46:42.90 grew up as a man 00:46:42.96\00:46:45.27 and lived that perfect life of example 00:46:45.30\00:46:48.30 for you and I... 00:46:48.34\00:46:49.67 because we can look at the law and say, "Wow" 00:46:49.70\00:46:51.44 Pastor Ryan, that's pretty serious... 00:46:51.47\00:46:53.38 that's holy... the law is holy, just and good 00:46:53.41\00:46:56.38 but when we saw Jesus live that law out in action, 00:46:56.44\00:47:01.28 as our perfect example of obedience. 00:47:01.32\00:47:04.49 You know there was a leader once who said, 00:47:04.52\00:47:06.69 "Do what I say, not what I do" 00:47:06.72\00:47:08.29 but that is not what the Lord Jesus said. 00:47:08.32\00:47:11.83 He set an example for us to follow. 00:47:11.86\00:47:15.13 So, I want to look at four things that Jesus chose 00:47:15.16\00:47:18.60 as it pertains to obedience. 00:47:18.63\00:47:21.30 Number 1: Jesus chose to obey His parents. 00:47:21.34\00:47:26.34 Let's look at Luke chapter 2, 00:47:26.37\00:47:28.31 turn with me to Luke chapter 2, verses 51 and 52. 00:47:28.34\00:47:31.75 Now, before we read this, 00:47:31.78\00:47:33.42 we know that Jesus was in the temple 00:47:33.48\00:47:37.09 with the doctors of the law... the rabbis... the scribes... 00:47:37.12\00:47:40.72 the Pharisees... for days... remember? 00:47:40.76\00:47:43.39 He was listening... He was asking questions 00:47:43.43\00:47:46.29 and answering their questions 00:47:46.33\00:47:48.16 and, of course, Mary and Joseph lost Jesus... 00:47:48.20\00:47:50.40 we heard this on a previous lesson for three whole days, 00:47:50.43\00:47:52.90 then, it says, right after that 00:47:52.93\00:47:56.20 they said, "Where have you been, Jesus?" 00:47:56.24\00:47:58.61 They found Him... they said, "Where have you been?" 00:47:58.64\00:48:00.68 and what did He say? 00:48:00.71\00:48:02.04 King James said, 00:48:02.08\00:48:03.41 "Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" 00:48:03.45\00:48:06.58 You see there, Jesus is 12 years old 00:48:06.61\00:48:09.62 in the temple understanding who He is 00:48:09.65\00:48:12.62 that He is the Lamb of God... 00:48:12.65\00:48:15.19 that these lambs that are being sacrificed... 00:48:15.22\00:48:17.39 that He came to be that sacrifice 00:48:17.43\00:48:20.43 understanding that He came from God 00:48:20.46\00:48:22.96 and He was to be that sacrifice. 00:48:23.00\00:48:25.43 Then it says, right after that in verse 51, 00:48:25.47\00:48:28.07 "Then He... " that's Jesus, 00:48:28.10\00:48:29.60 went down with them, and came to Nazareth, 00:48:29.64\00:48:31.31 and was subject to them: 00:48:31.37\00:48:33.98 but his mother kept all these things in her heart. 00:48:34.01\00:48:36.44 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, 00:48:36.48\00:48:38.78 and in favour with God and man. " 00:48:38.81\00:48:40.62 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:48:40.65\00:48:41.98 Jill: That word for subject in Greek means to submit 00:48:42.02\00:48:44.09 or place yourself under... 00:48:44.12\00:48:46.42 it's the same word Paul uses when he says, 00:48:46.45\00:48:48.59 "Wives submit to your husbands... " 00:48:48.62\00:48:50.93 or, "slaves submit to your masters" 00:48:50.96\00:48:53.16 so, Jesus was subject or submitted to the authority 00:48:53.19\00:48:56.43 of His parents. 00:48:56.46\00:48:57.80 Now, that is really pivotal to me 00:48:57.83\00:48:59.43 because just before then He realized... what? 00:48:59.47\00:49:01.60 Who He was... that He is the Son of God 00:49:01.64\00:49:04.77 yet He submitted Himself to His parents in obedience. 00:49:04.81\00:49:10.91 Jesus chose to obey His parents. 00:49:10.95\00:49:14.25 Number 2: Jesus chose obedience 00:49:14.32\00:49:17.55 over any physical or emotional discomfort. 00:49:17.59\00:49:21.32 Panel: Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm. 00:49:21.36\00:49:22.69 Jill: Often, if I'm faced with ridicule or pain 00:49:22.72\00:49:27.46 or something that seems humiliating 00:49:27.50\00:49:30.40 or a little disgraceful, 00:49:30.47\00:49:31.80 I might be tempted to fudge or not be so obedient 00:49:31.83\00:49:36.44 but yet, Jesus chose obedience over anything else. 00:49:36.47\00:49:41.11 Turn with me to Philippians 2, 00:49:41.14\00:49:42.64 I like this... the mind of Christ, 00:49:42.68\00:49:44.31 Philippians 2 verses 5 through 8, 00:49:44.35\00:49:47.18 "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, 00:49:47.22\00:49:51.25 who, being in the form of God, 00:49:51.29\00:49:53.39 did not consider it to be robbery to be equal with God, 00:49:53.42\00:49:56.29 but made Himself of no reputation, 00:49:56.32\00:49:58.79 taking on Him the form of a servant, 00:49:58.83\00:50:01.26 and coming in the likeness of men. 00:50:01.30\00:50:03.50 Being found in appearance as a man, 00:50:03.53\00:50:05.57 He humbled Himself and became obedient... " 00:50:05.60\00:50:09.54 that's our word... "obedient to the point of death, 00:50:09.57\00:50:12.27 even the death of the cross. " 00:50:12.31\00:50:14.68 I see five levels of digression here... 00:50:14.71\00:50:17.75 He is the Son of God... divine... 00:50:17.78\00:50:20.48 He could have just stooped to the level of angels... 00:50:20.52\00:50:23.49 could have stooped to the level of humanity... 00:50:23.52\00:50:25.79 then He stooped to the level of sinful humanity 00:50:25.82\00:50:29.02 because He took our flesh after the fall... 00:50:29.09\00:50:32.26 our sinful nature... 00:50:32.29\00:50:33.76 He stooped to the point of death 00:50:33.80\00:50:35.66 and not just any death... but death on the cross 00:50:35.70\00:50:39.40 which was the most humiliating and degrading death 00:50:39.43\00:50:43.10 that they had. 00:50:43.17\00:50:44.51 When you think, "I can't... " 00:50:44.54\00:50:46.47 remember that Jesus did... 00:50:46.51\00:50:48.51 He endured hunger and privation, humiliation, 00:50:48.54\00:50:51.71 pain, torture and death. 00:50:51.75\00:50:53.85 He chose obedience 00:50:53.88\00:50:55.92 over any physical or emotional discomfort. 00:50:55.95\00:50:59.09 Number 3: He chose to always honor and obey His father. 00:50:59.12\00:51:04.69 John chapter 8 verses 28 and 29, 00:51:04.73\00:51:08.86 John 8:28 and 29, 00:51:08.93\00:51:10.67 Jesus said to them, 00:51:10.70\00:51:12.37 "When you lift up the Son of Man, 00:51:12.40\00:51:14.27 then you will know that I am He, 00:51:14.30\00:51:16.54 and that I do nothing of Myself; 00:51:16.57\00:51:19.01 but as my Father has taught Me... " 00:51:19.04\00:51:21.38 it was not through any of His own strength 00:51:21.41\00:51:24.21 that He walked in obedience. 00:51:24.25\00:51:25.81 It was that connection... dependence on 00:51:25.85\00:51:28.98 and connection with His Father. 00:51:29.02\00:51:30.92 It's because I depend on my Father that I do these things, 00:51:30.99\00:51:34.12 verse 29, "And He who sent Me is with Me. 00:51:34.16\00:51:37.39 The Father has not left Me alone, 00:51:37.43\00:51:39.49 for I always do... " what? 00:51:39.53\00:51:41.93 "those things that please Him. " 00:51:41.96\00:51:44.57 Jesus always chose... 00:51:44.60\00:51:46.70 if there was a decision, you could say "a fork in the road" 00:51:46.74\00:51:49.34 something that you're looking at, 00:51:49.37\00:51:50.71 He always chose, "I'm going to honor my Father. " 00:51:50.74\00:51:52.94 Panel: Amen. 00:51:52.97\00:51:54.31 Jill: I'm going to obey my Father... 00:51:54.34\00:51:55.81 I'm going to do what my Father wants 00:51:55.84\00:51:58.01 as opposed to maybe what I want myself. 00:51:58.05\00:52:00.12 Finally, Number 4: Jesus chose to allow suffering 00:52:00.15\00:52:04.79 to perfect Him. 00:52:04.82\00:52:06.76 Hebrews 5 verse 8, "Though He was a Son, 00:52:06.79\00:52:11.33 yet He learned obedience through the things which He suffered. " 00:52:11.36\00:52:17.07 Have you ever noticed that trials drive us to God 00:52:17.10\00:52:20.47 or they might drive you away from God... 00:52:20.50\00:52:23.00 when you go through a difficult experience. 00:52:23.04\00:52:25.37 I remember, someone who works here at 3ABN... 00:52:25.41\00:52:27.81 I'll call him "Sam" that's not his real name... 00:52:27.84\00:52:30.21 he broke his hip... went in the hospital... 00:52:30.25\00:52:32.61 Greg and I went to go visit him... 00:52:32.65\00:52:33.98 we went to encourage him 00:52:34.02\00:52:35.58 because he is going through a hard time... 00:52:35.62\00:52:37.39 he just is having surgery... he's in pain... 00:52:37.42\00:52:39.15 he encouraged us 00:52:39.19\00:52:40.72 and I came back to 3ABN and I shared with someone, 00:52:40.76\00:52:43.76 "I can't believe... we went to see Sam 00:52:43.79\00:52:46.03 and he encouraged us... " 00:52:46.06\00:52:47.40 and the person said, 00:52:47.43\00:52:48.76 "Oh, that's Sam, he's always like that, 00:52:48.80\00:52:50.77 he's just a cheerful person. " 00:52:50.80\00:52:52.53 No, he chose to allow suffering to perfect his character 00:52:52.60\00:52:57.54 and that trial... he turned to God instead of away from God. 00:52:57.57\00:53:02.48 You know, trials patiently endured... 00:53:02.51\00:53:05.01 they produce righteousness in the life of the believer. 00:53:05.05\00:53:08.42 Hebrews 12 verse 11, 00:53:08.45\00:53:10.25 "Now no chastening... " or no trial... 00:53:10.29\00:53:12.49 "for the present... it's not joyful but painful: 00:53:12.52\00:53:16.32 nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit 00:53:16.36\00:53:20.10 of righteousness 00:53:20.13\00:53:21.53 to those who are trained by it. " 00:53:21.56\00:53:23.97 Trials produce righteousness... 00:53:24.00\00:53:26.30 trials produce character in the life of the believer. 00:53:26.33\00:53:30.41 Romans 5 verses 3 and 4, 00:53:30.44\00:53:32.74 "We glory in tribulation...
