Amen. 00:03:24.60\00:03:25.93 Thank you so much. 00:03:25.97\00:03:27.30 Our opening scripture is Proverbs 9:10. 00:03:27.34\00:03:29.70 You want to open up your Bibles there to Proverbs 9:10. 00:03:29.74\00:03:33.68 Last quarter, of course, 00:03:33.71\00:03:35.04 was written by Pastor Mark Finley. 00:03:35.08\00:03:36.58 This quarter was written by... 00:03:36.61\00:03:38.21 It's a compilation. 00:03:38.25\00:03:39.78 It's written by Seventh-day Adventist College professors 00:03:39.81\00:03:43.35 throughout the North American Division. 00:03:43.39\00:03:45.02 So, you could say the great gifted minds 00:03:45.05\00:03:48.46 got together and put together this lesson. 00:03:48.49\00:03:51.86 Proverbs 9:10, 00:03:51.89\00:03:53.23 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. 00:03:53.26\00:03:57.10 And the knowledge 00:03:57.13\00:03:58.47 of the Holy One is understanding. 00:03:58.50\00:04:00.54 All true knowledge, all understanding," 00:04:00.57\00:04:03.81 by extension, all education, "begins with God." 00:04:03.84\00:04:08.14 It begins with the knowledge of God. 00:04:08.18\00:04:09.91 It begins with the knowledge of His Word. 00:04:09.94\00:04:12.45 It begins with the understanding provided 00:04:12.48\00:04:15.12 by the Holy Spirit. 00:04:15.15\00:04:16.48 That's why we always pray before we open up 00:04:16.52\00:04:19.62 the Word of God. 00:04:19.65\00:04:21.06 You could say all education begins with God Himself. 00:04:21.09\00:04:24.99 If you don't understand God, 00:04:25.03\00:04:26.53 how do you understand life or science or language or art? 00:04:26.56\00:04:32.03 All true education begins with a knowledge 00:04:32.07\00:04:34.80 of the character of God. 00:04:34.84\00:04:37.17 1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love. 00:04:37.21\00:04:43.14 God's character is love. 00:04:43.18\00:04:45.25 In fact, in the book Education, this is a little book, 00:04:45.28\00:04:47.98 compilation written by Ellen White, page 16. 00:04:48.02\00:04:51.29 It says, "Love, the basis of creation and of redemption, 00:04:51.32\00:04:55.52 is the basis of true education." 00:04:55.56\00:04:58.49 All true education begins with God, 00:04:58.53\00:05:01.66 a knowledge of the character of God, 00:05:01.70\00:05:03.73 and of course that character is love. 00:05:03.77\00:05:06.30 "All true education focuses on the restoration 00:05:06.33\00:05:10.17 of the character of God in humankind." 00:05:10.21\00:05:13.31 That's right. 00:05:13.34\00:05:14.68 That's the goal and purpose of education. 00:05:14.71\00:05:17.78 Christ came to show us the Father, 00:05:17.81\00:05:19.58 and to restore us 00:05:19.61\00:05:21.18 back to the image of the divine. 00:05:21.22\00:05:23.99 2 Corinthians 5:17, I love this scripture. 00:05:24.02\00:05:27.19 "If anyone is in Christ, he or she is a new creation. 00:05:27.22\00:05:31.86 Old things have passed away. 00:05:31.89\00:05:33.50 Behold, all things have become new." 00:05:33.53\00:05:37.20 All true Christian education focuses on doctrine 00:05:37.23\00:05:40.40 and worship, instruction, fellowship, 00:05:40.44\00:05:42.87 evangelism, and service. 00:05:42.90\00:05:44.97 By contrast, education to become rich or famous, 00:05:45.01\00:05:50.41 education to become skeptical or cynical, 00:05:50.45\00:05:54.65 education to become knowledgeable 00:05:54.68\00:05:56.62 just for the sake of knowledge. 00:05:56.65\00:05:59.15 Without a true knowledge of God, it means nothing. 00:05:59.19\00:06:03.39 Jesus said in Mark 8:36, 00:06:03.43\00:06:05.83 "What shall it profit if a man gain the whole world, 00:06:05.86\00:06:10.77 but lose his own soul?" 00:06:10.80\00:06:14.37 Literature, science, medicine, art, economics, 00:06:14.40\00:06:18.54 all of that is important, 00:06:18.57\00:06:19.97 but without an understanding of God, 00:06:20.01\00:06:22.21 without the restoration of the character of God 00:06:22.24\00:06:24.88 in our soul, it profits us nothing. 00:06:24.91\00:06:28.88 So we look at education from the standpoint 00:06:28.92\00:06:31.72 of the Garden of Eden. 00:06:31.75\00:06:33.29 That is our lesson for today. 00:06:33.32\00:06:36.29 The first school, as it were, 00:06:36.32\00:06:37.89 Adam and Eve been the first students 00:06:37.93\00:06:40.20 in the Garden of Eden. 00:06:40.23\00:06:41.56 So let's turn all the way back to Genesis 00:06:41.60\00:06:43.40 and we're going to take a look at that. 00:06:43.43\00:06:45.43 Genesis, I pick it up in Genesis 2. 00:06:45.47\00:06:48.10 But before we do that, we better read our memory text. 00:06:48.14\00:06:50.94 That is Job 36:22. 00:06:50.97\00:06:53.84 And if you have your lesson, 00:06:53.88\00:06:55.21 you can just follow along with us there. 00:06:55.24\00:06:57.91 Job 36:22, "Behold, God is exalted by His power, 00:06:57.95\00:07:04.19 Who teaches like Him?" 00:07:04.22\00:07:06.86 That tells us God is the ultimate teacher. 00:07:06.89\00:07:10.59 It's right. I love that. 00:07:10.63\00:07:12.39 He is the ultimate teacher. 00:07:12.43\00:07:14.23 Who teaches like Him? 00:07:14.26\00:07:15.60 And as we go through this quarter, 00:07:15.63\00:07:17.07 we will discover that Jesus was a master teacher 00:07:17.10\00:07:21.80 when He walked this earth. 00:07:21.84\00:07:24.04 What an incredible teacher He was. 00:07:24.07\00:07:25.81 On Sunday, we look at the first school. 00:07:25.84\00:07:29.61 You know, I like to read, and I love stories. 00:07:29.64\00:07:32.01 And you think, when you read stories, 00:07:32.05\00:07:33.45 there's always what? 00:07:33.48\00:07:34.82 A cast and characters, and you kind of develop 00:07:34.85\00:07:37.55 them as you go through the story. 00:07:37.59\00:07:39.39 There's always a setting and a background. 00:07:39.42\00:07:41.19 There's a plotline or a storyline. 00:07:41.22\00:07:43.79 But in the Garden of Eden, in Genesis Chapter 2, 00:07:43.83\00:07:46.33 this is not just a story. 00:07:46.36\00:07:47.80 This really happened. 00:07:47.83\00:07:49.73 And what happened in Genesis Chapter 2 and 3, 00:07:49.76\00:07:51.73 as we will study today, it changed history forever. 00:07:51.77\00:07:55.57 That's right. 00:07:55.60\00:07:56.94 Who are the characters in the story? 00:07:56.97\00:07:58.47 God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, 00:07:58.51\00:08:01.98 all present in creation, all involved as teachers, 00:08:02.01\00:08:06.38 you could say, in this first school. 00:08:06.41\00:08:09.52 Adam and Eve being the first pupils, 00:08:09.55\00:08:12.22 the first students. 00:08:12.25\00:08:14.32 You know, if the teacher made you, 00:08:14.36\00:08:15.69 would you think he understood you? 00:08:15.72\00:08:17.46 That's just a mind-boggling concept to me. 00:08:17.49\00:08:20.10 You know, as educators we're taught, 00:08:20.13\00:08:22.53 understand your students, know your students, 00:08:22.56\00:08:24.87 know their strengths and weaknesses 00:08:24.90\00:08:26.63 and how best to help them. 00:08:26.67\00:08:28.14 Who better understands us than the Lord Jesus Christ? 00:08:28.17\00:08:32.17 That's right. 00:08:32.21\00:08:33.54 The setting for the first school 00:08:33.58\00:08:35.41 was the Garden of Eden. 00:08:35.44\00:08:38.95 There's an article I read, this is from UC, Berkeley. 00:08:38.98\00:08:42.65 They did a study discussing the work of Dr. Ming Kuo, 00:08:42.68\00:08:47.46 and they studied how it helps and benefit students 00:08:47.49\00:08:51.69 to be educated outside. 00:08:51.73\00:08:53.76 Now, isn't that interesting? 00:08:53.80\00:08:55.20 God knew this in the beginning 00:08:55.23\00:08:56.56 because Adam and Eve were in the garden. 00:08:56.60\00:08:58.23 They were outside in their education, 00:08:58.27\00:09:00.44 their entire education. 00:09:00.47\00:09:02.10 Now in this study, 00:09:02.14\00:09:03.47 they did not do the entire education outside. 00:09:03.51\00:09:05.37 They did one class, they took them out 00:09:05.41\00:09:06.94 for the 30-minute period. 00:09:06.98\00:09:08.44 They just sat in the grass, they did nothing special. 00:09:08.48\00:09:10.88 They did their regular schoolwork. 00:09:10.91\00:09:12.85 They didn't even do anything pertaining to outside, 00:09:12.88\00:09:15.25 they just sat outside. 00:09:15.28\00:09:17.49 They found when they came indoors, 00:09:17.52\00:09:19.85 their focus level and their engagement continued 00:09:19.89\00:09:24.49 exponentially through even the entire next class period. 00:09:24.53\00:09:29.06 What a gift Adam and Eve had to be able to study outside. 00:09:31.93\00:09:37.14 So I want to look, you know, I have a list, 00:09:37.17\00:09:39.24 seven principles of true education 00:09:39.27\00:09:42.58 that we find from Genesis 2. 00:09:42.61\00:09:44.61 Seven principles that we find in this first school. 00:09:44.65\00:09:48.45 Principle number one, 00:09:48.48\00:09:49.82 true education centers on Christ. 00:09:49.85\00:09:54.76 Look at Genesis 2:8. 00:09:54.79\00:09:56.52 We're going to actually get our first principles 00:09:56.56\00:09:58.83 from the same verse. 00:09:58.86\00:10:00.23 Genesis 2:8, 00:10:00.26\00:10:01.90 "The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden. 00:10:01.93\00:10:06.00 And there He put the man whom He had formed. 00:10:06.03\00:10:08.77 The word I want to focus on is garden. 00:10:08.80\00:10:11.27 In Hebrew, it means to be enclosed, 00:10:11.31\00:10:14.11 fenced off, protecting. 00:10:14.14\00:10:17.75 It's a form of temple garden, 00:10:17.78\00:10:20.52 which was later represented by the tabernacle, 00:10:20.55\00:10:22.68 where a man met with God. 00:10:22.72\00:10:25.19 Both the tabernacle that later happened 00:10:25.22\00:10:27.69 with the children of Israel, 00:10:27.72\00:10:29.06 where God would come down with a cloud 00:10:29.09\00:10:30.59 and meet with them, 00:10:30.63\00:10:32.39 and the Garden of Eden in the beginning, 00:10:32.43\00:10:35.16 served as the meeting place, you could say, 00:10:35.20\00:10:37.87 between God and humanity. 00:10:37.90\00:10:40.47 In fact, in Genesis 3, we won't go there. 00:10:40.50\00:10:42.97 But remember, after sin entered, 00:10:43.00\00:10:44.64 God called to Adam, "Where are you?" 00:10:44.67\00:10:47.14 Because He was coming for His regular meeting time 00:10:47.18\00:10:51.45 with His students. 00:10:51.48\00:10:53.08 That would have been Adam and Eve. 00:10:53.11\00:10:55.82 True education centers on Christ. 00:10:55.85\00:10:59.15 Adam and Eve, as the first students, 00:10:59.19\00:11:00.79 had access to their teacher, to God, to Jesus every day. 00:11:00.82\00:11:06.86 Principle number two, 00:11:06.90\00:11:08.36 true education has boundaries and organization. 00:11:08.40\00:11:13.44 The same scripture, we already read it, 00:11:13.47\00:11:16.00 "The Lord God planted the garden in Eden." 00:11:16.04\00:11:18.87 And if you think about that word garden, 00:11:18.91\00:11:20.98 not only is it this tabernacle meeting place with God, 00:11:21.01\00:11:24.81 but if it means to be enclosed, fenced off and protected, 00:11:24.85\00:11:27.45 that shows that there's order, 00:11:27.48\00:11:29.45 that shows that there are boundaries. 00:11:29.48\00:11:32.52 You know, sometimes in education, 00:11:32.55\00:11:33.89 we say we just focus on Jesus and that's it. 00:11:33.92\00:11:36.42 Jesus is incredible and we want to focus on Him. 00:11:36.46\00:11:40.70 But we need some measure of organization 00:11:40.73\00:11:44.43 in that educational structure. 00:11:44.47\00:11:46.77 Principle number three, true education is enjoyable. 00:11:46.80\00:11:51.21 Learning should be enjoyable. 00:11:51.24\00:11:54.41 The same verse, 00:11:54.44\00:11:55.78 "The Lord God planted that garden eastward in Eden." 00:11:55.81\00:11:59.41 The word Eden denotes pleasure and delight. 00:11:59.45\00:12:04.12 Do educators today... 00:12:04.15\00:12:05.49 Now whether you're a teacher, whether you're a pastor, 00:12:05.52\00:12:08.46 you are truly educating in your congregation. 00:12:08.49\00:12:11.23 Whether you are a parent, 00:12:11.26\00:12:12.59 you educate your children every day. 00:12:12.63\00:12:15.20 Whether you are in the workplace, 00:12:15.23\00:12:16.67 you provide education for people around you. 00:12:16.70\00:12:19.80 Your neighbors, you can educate neighbors, 00:12:19.83\00:12:21.94 no matter who they are. 00:12:21.97\00:12:23.44 True education should center on Christ, 00:12:23.47\00:12:25.77 it has boundaries and organization, 00:12:25.81\00:12:27.51 it should be enjoyable. 00:12:27.54\00:12:29.14 Number four, true education involves the teachers' 00:12:29.18\00:12:32.15 knowledge and care for the student. 00:12:32.18\00:12:35.38 The same scripture Genesis 2:8, at the end, it says, 00:12:35.42\00:12:38.52 "He put the man whom He had formed." 00:12:38.55\00:12:41.12 God formed Adam, clearly He understood him. 00:12:41.16\00:12:45.39 Principle number five, 00:12:45.43\00:12:46.93 true education involves teaching right and wrong. 00:12:46.96\00:12:50.80 Verse 9, next verse, "Out of the ground, 00:12:50.83\00:12:53.10 the Lord God made every tree grow 00:12:53.13\00:12:54.50 that is pleasant to the sight and good for fruit. 00:12:54.54\00:12:57.84 The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden 00:12:57.87\00:13:00.31 and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." 00:13:00.34\00:13:02.18 Jump down to verse 16, 00:13:02.21\00:13:04.15 "And the Lord God commanded the man saying, 00:13:04.18\00:13:05.88 'Of every tree of the garden, you may freely eat, 00:13:05.91\00:13:08.02 but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, 00:13:08.05\00:13:09.58 you shall not eat, for in the day you eat of it, 00:13:09.62\00:13:12.22 you will surely die.' " 00:13:12.25\00:13:14.22 In today's culture, this is considered extreme 00:13:14.26\00:13:16.39 to teach moral absolutes to teach 00:13:16.42\00:13:18.79 that there is a right and wrong, 00:13:18.83\00:13:20.93 but that is biblical. 00:13:20.96\00:13:22.30 True education involves teaching right from wrong. 00:13:22.33\00:13:25.90 Number six, true education involves work, 00:13:25.93\00:13:29.60 not just book learning, but practical education. 00:13:29.64\00:13:33.48 Verse 15, "The Lord God took the man 00:13:33.51\00:13:36.31 and put him in the Garden of Eden 00:13:36.34\00:13:37.88 to tend it and to keep it." 00:13:37.91\00:13:40.08 Now we think work was a consequence of sin. 00:13:40.12\00:13:42.48 It was not. 00:13:42.52\00:13:43.85 God gave Adam and Eve practical employment work 00:13:43.89\00:13:47.42 before sin ever entered the earth. 00:13:47.46\00:13:50.49 Finally, number seven, true education is not solitary. 00:13:50.53\00:13:54.46 Learning involves companionship. 00:13:54.50\00:13:57.93 We learn in groups together. 00:13:57.97\00:14:00.24 Now this verse, "The Lord God said, 00:14:00.27\00:14:02.07 'It is not good that man should be alone. 00:14:02.10\00:14:04.01 I will make him a helper comparable to him.' " 00:14:04.04\00:14:06.61 Now that refers to marriage, but also in education, 00:14:06.64\00:14:09.71 we can learn together. 00:14:09.74\00:14:11.28 Amen. 00:14:11.31\00:14:12.65 Praise the Lord. Thank you so much, Jill. 00:14:12.68\00:14:14.25 You're always very thorough and I like that. 00:14:14.28\00:14:16.55 Praise the Lord. 00:14:16.58\00:14:18.05 You know, my lesson is Monday's lesson 00:14:18.09\00:14:19.75 and it's got an interesting title "Intrusion." 00:14:19.79\00:14:23.06 Intrusion, which automatically kind of sets a negative 00:14:23.09\00:14:25.76 connotation in your mind. 00:14:25.79\00:14:27.13 What type of intrusion? 00:14:27.16\00:14:28.56 Well, we don't have to go very far 00:14:28.60\00:14:30.47 in the Book of Genesis before the mood changes. 00:14:30.50\00:14:33.60 Genesis Chapter 1 and 2, we see that Adam and Eve 00:14:33.64\00:14:36.87 is placed into the Garden of Eden. 00:14:36.91\00:14:39.37 And Eden simply means pleasure. 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.44 And I love that because we see 00:14:41.48\00:14:42.84 that God is not against pleasure. 00:14:42.88\00:14:44.61 He wants to give us pleasure. 00:14:44.65\00:14:46.08 He loves us so much that He wants us to be happy 00:14:46.11\00:14:48.72 and He wanted to put Adam and Eve in a beautiful, 00:14:48.75\00:14:51.52 perfect atmosphere of love. 00:14:51.55\00:14:54.29 And it's just an amazing thought to know 00:14:54.32\00:14:57.39 that God set them up for perfection. 00:14:57.43\00:14:59.59 I mean, they were in a perfect atmosphere. 00:14:59.63\00:15:02.23 We see that God wanted them to have a pleasurable 00:15:02.26\00:15:05.50 educational experience, learning from, 00:15:05.53\00:15:08.30 as Jill brought out, 00:15:08.34\00:15:09.67 nature as well as the Creator Himself. 00:15:09.70\00:15:11.97 What a blessing to think that we can, you know, 00:15:12.01\00:15:14.81 that we will one day have an opportunity to learn 00:15:14.84\00:15:17.35 from Jesus in person, right? 00:15:17.38\00:15:19.08 This brother and sister had the opportunity to walk 00:15:19.11\00:15:22.52 and talk with God in His very presence. 00:15:22.55\00:15:24.55 And so, I could just imagine how awesome that was. 00:15:24.59\00:15:28.29 But, of course, we know it wasn't long 00:15:28.32\00:15:30.03 before this educational experience was interrupted. 00:15:30.06\00:15:34.06 And so, you look at kind of the layout of Genesis, 00:15:34.10\00:15:37.60 and you kind of would expect 00:15:37.63\00:15:39.00 that there would be a few chapters 00:15:39.03\00:15:40.87 before this great antagonistic figure would approach, 00:15:40.90\00:15:43.71 but I mean, you haven't even had time to open 00:15:43.74\00:15:46.17 the screen door, open the front door, 00:15:46.21\00:15:48.48 come into the foyer or the entrance area 00:15:48.51\00:15:50.95 of the home and kick off your shoes before. 00:15:50.98\00:15:53.45 Here's the enemy already. 00:15:53.48\00:15:54.88 In fact, there's a great shift 00:15:54.92\00:15:56.35 that takes place as we transition 00:15:56.38\00:15:57.92 from Genesis Chapter 2 to Chapter 3. 00:15:57.95\00:16:00.22 It's interesting to note 00:16:00.26\00:16:01.59 that when you're in Genesis 1 and 2, 00:16:01.62\00:16:02.96 you have language, such as, you know, 00:16:02.99\00:16:04.33 words like good and very good and not ashamed and pleasant. 00:16:04.36\00:16:10.00 I mean, you just get this kind of overall feeling 00:16:10.03\00:16:12.20 of everything's just fine and dandy, right? 00:16:12.23\00:16:14.90 But by the time you get to Genesis Chapter 3, 00:16:14.94\00:16:17.24 in the very first verse, it opens with the serpent 00:16:17.27\00:16:20.98 being described as more subtle or cunning than anyone else. 00:16:21.01\00:16:27.72 So definitely a shift in mood from positive to negative. 00:16:27.75\00:16:31.65 So let's go to Genesis Chapter 3, 00:16:31.69\00:16:33.62 and we're going to notice something 00:16:33.66\00:16:34.99 as we get into these first few verses. 00:16:35.02\00:16:36.93 I'm not necessarily going to give 00:16:36.96\00:16:38.29 a kind of a commentary breakdown. 00:16:38.33\00:16:40.96 But I want to look at something that's kind of implied 00:16:41.00\00:16:43.80 and very much clear in these texts, 00:16:43.83\00:16:46.53 if you just read into and look into what is actually there. 00:16:46.57\00:16:50.47 So notice Genesis 3:1, very interesting, 00:16:50.51\00:16:53.74 God's not wasting any time. 00:16:53.78\00:16:55.38 He says, "Now the serpent was more cunning 00:16:55.41\00:16:57.15 than any beast of the field, which the Lord God had made." 00:16:57.18\00:17:01.02 And I just want to pause there, 00:17:01.05\00:17:02.45 God is somewhat giving the reader. 00:17:02.48\00:17:05.09 And in this case, it's us, anyone who's studied His Word, 00:17:05.12\00:17:07.99 He was informing. 00:17:08.02\00:17:09.36 Moses, as Moses is writing this down and recording it. 00:17:09.39\00:17:11.83 Let me give you a little bit of an understanding 00:17:11.86\00:17:13.90 into the character 00:17:13.93\00:17:15.36 and the very nature of this enemy. 00:17:15.40\00:17:17.43 Okay? 00:17:17.47\00:17:18.80 Notice how he didn't say he's all powerful, 00:17:18.83\00:17:21.10 or he's just so strong, or he's just so awesome, 00:17:21.14\00:17:24.31 you know, in his power. 00:17:24.34\00:17:26.31 No, no, no. He's described as cunning. 00:17:26.34\00:17:29.44 He's subtle. 00:17:29.48\00:17:31.41 What does that mean? 00:17:31.45\00:17:32.78 What is his strength? 00:17:32.81\00:17:34.45 He's deceptive. Yeah. 00:17:34.48\00:17:35.82 He's crafty. Yeah. 00:17:35.85\00:17:37.42 You know, he's very cunning in nature. 00:17:37.45\00:17:41.22 His strength is thought, thought interruption. 00:17:41.26\00:17:46.70 His strength is altering and changing 00:17:46.73\00:17:49.46 or causing you to alter your thoughts, 00:17:49.50\00:17:52.27 which we're about to see here. 00:17:52.30\00:17:53.74 It's exactly what it's about to take place 00:17:53.77\00:17:55.27 in Genesis Chapter 3. 00:17:55.30\00:17:56.81 So he's more subtle than any beast of the field. 00:17:56.84\00:17:59.37 So up to this point, 00:17:59.41\00:18:00.74 Adam and Eve have had a wonderful opportunity 00:18:00.78\00:18:02.78 to walk and talk with God, right? 00:18:02.81\00:18:04.71 They are learning from Him and about Him, 00:18:04.75\00:18:07.32 which was wonderful. 00:18:07.35\00:18:08.68 However, the image, notice this, 00:18:08.72\00:18:10.49 the image of the character of God 00:18:10.52\00:18:12.79 is about to be put on the stands, 00:18:12.82\00:18:14.69 and challenged by the serpent. 00:18:14.72\00:18:16.06 What have they known about God up to this point? 00:18:16.09\00:18:18.43 God is just loving, He's kind, He's merciful. 00:18:18.46\00:18:21.50 He's just this awesome, all-knowing, all-loving, 00:18:21.53\00:18:24.70 all-powerful God, 00:18:24.73\00:18:26.07 and they're so great to be in His presence. 00:18:26.10\00:18:27.44 But Satan is about to plant a seed into Eve's mind 00:18:27.47\00:18:31.17 to see God in a different light. 00:18:31.21\00:18:32.67 And you say, what do you say here? 00:18:32.71\00:18:34.04 Let's look at this right here. 00:18:34.08\00:18:35.41 So here comes accusation number one 00:18:35.44\00:18:36.78 against the character of God. 00:18:36.81\00:18:38.18 The devil plants the seed in Eve's mind 00:18:38.21\00:18:40.18 that God is not who He says He is. 00:18:40.22\00:18:42.42 So notice Genesis 3:1, this is a continuance 00:18:42.45\00:18:45.09 of what we just read. 00:18:45.12\00:18:46.45 It says, "And he said to the woman, 00:18:46.49\00:18:47.96 'Has God indeed said 00:18:47.99\00:18:49.96 you shall not eat of every tree of the garden?' " 00:18:49.99\00:18:53.06 Now, many people would just read right over this. 00:18:53.09\00:18:54.93 But notice here, there's an implied accusation 00:18:54.96\00:18:57.83 against the character of God here. 00:18:57.87\00:18:59.80 Did God tell you that? 00:18:59.83\00:19:01.17 Really, did God tell you? 00:19:01.20\00:19:03.14 Now, look at all these wonderful, 00:19:03.17\00:19:04.51 beautiful trees in the garden. 00:19:04.54\00:19:05.87 And there's one in this garden that He said you can't eat of. 00:19:05.91\00:19:07.91 How unfair is that? 00:19:07.94\00:19:10.05 In other words, accusation number one. 00:19:10.08\00:19:11.61 In fact, there's three accusations 00:19:11.65\00:19:13.11 against the character of God in these opening verses. 00:19:13.15\00:19:15.18 And I want you to see the drastic transition 00:19:15.22\00:19:17.39 from Genesis 1 and 2 00:19:17.42\00:19:18.75 to what we see in Chapter 3 here. 00:19:18.79\00:19:20.46 What he's saying here is, you know, God is unclear. 00:19:20.49\00:19:23.12 Isn't He unreasonable and restrictive? 00:19:23.16\00:19:25.36 Is this the kind of God you want to serve? 00:19:25.39\00:19:26.73 Someone who just won't give you 00:19:26.76\00:19:28.23 everything that you want, right? 00:19:28.26\00:19:30.23 How dare He tell? 00:19:30.27\00:19:31.60 You look at this tree... 00:19:31.63\00:19:32.97 You can just imagine and look at this fruit, Eve! 00:19:33.00\00:19:34.34 Man, doesn't it look so good 00:19:34.37\00:19:35.70 and God's keeping this from you. 00:19:35.74\00:19:37.47 He's restrictive. 00:19:37.51\00:19:38.84 Is that the kind of God you want to serve? 00:19:38.87\00:19:40.21 All right. 00:19:40.24\00:19:41.58 But notice, it continues on. 00:19:41.61\00:19:42.94 The woman clarifies in verse 2, 00:19:42.98\00:19:44.31 "And the woman said to the serpent, 00:19:44.35\00:19:45.68 'We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 00:19:45.71\00:19:47.18 but of the fruit of the tree 00:19:47.22\00:19:48.55 which is in the midst of the garden,' 00:19:48.58\00:19:49.92 God has said, 'You shall not eat of it, 00:19:49.95\00:19:51.72 neither shall you touch it, lest ye die.' " 00:19:51.75\00:19:55.96 Okay, so notice this. 00:19:55.99\00:19:57.56 Notice how Eve did not emphasize the warning 00:19:57.59\00:20:01.46 the same way that God did in Genesis 2:17. 00:20:01.50\00:20:03.50 That's right. Yeah. 00:20:03.53\00:20:04.87 Okay, so the fact that she is entertaining 00:20:04.90\00:20:07.00 a conversation with this serpent, 00:20:07.04\00:20:09.14 he's already penetrated her thoughts. 00:20:09.17\00:20:11.61 He's already got her confused. 00:20:11.64\00:20:13.41 You know, God had said that you shall surely die. 00:20:13.44\00:20:16.58 And now notice what she says, you know, 00:20:16.61\00:20:17.95 in the day that we eat of it, you know, we shall die. 00:20:17.98\00:20:21.18 But you know, and she even adds a word, 00:20:21.22\00:20:23.08 we can't even touch it, 00:20:23.12\00:20:24.49 even though God didn't say that. 00:20:24.52\00:20:25.89 She's confused because she's entertaining 00:20:25.92\00:20:28.19 this idea or this thought, 00:20:28.22\00:20:30.49 this conversation with the devil. 00:20:30.53\00:20:32.16 And so notice verse 4, the serpent responds, 00:20:32.19\00:20:34.06 "And he says to the woman, 'You will not surely die.' " 00:20:34.10\00:20:37.80 Now notice he added the word surely. 00:20:37.83\00:20:39.67 In Genesis 2:17, God did say, "You shall surely die." 00:20:39.70\00:20:42.64 He says, "No, no, no, no. 00:20:42.67\00:20:44.54 Don't believe that. 00:20:44.57\00:20:45.91 You're not really going to die." 00:20:45.94\00:20:47.88 And so here's accusation number two. 00:20:47.91\00:20:50.38 What is he saying to her? 00:20:50.41\00:20:52.38 God's a liar. 00:20:52.41\00:20:53.75 You can't trust Him. 00:20:53.78\00:20:55.12 He's untrustworthy and He's dishonest. 00:20:55.15\00:20:57.59 So by this, by now I could imagine, Eve, 00:20:57.62\00:20:59.95 she's full fledge, like, 00:20:59.99\00:21:01.32 launched into the state of confusion. 00:21:01.36\00:21:02.79 "Wait a second," 00:21:02.82\00:21:04.16 because she's never heard a lie before. 00:21:04.19\00:21:05.53 She's never heard it. 00:21:05.56\00:21:06.90 I mean, she's been in a perfect state 00:21:06.93\00:21:08.36 of just perfection and love and truth and honesty. 00:21:08.40\00:21:13.03 And now she's hearing all this for the first time. 00:21:13.07\00:21:15.60 And then comes the big blow. 00:21:15.64\00:21:18.61 Accusation number three, verse 5. 00:21:18.64\00:21:20.71 Notice what it says here. 00:21:20.74\00:21:22.38 "For God knows that in the day you eat of it, 00:21:22.41\00:21:26.31 your eyes will be opened. 00:21:26.35\00:21:28.35 And you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 00:21:28.38\00:21:32.05 Now we know there's someone in scripture 00:21:32.09\00:21:33.49 that said he wanted to be like God. 00:21:33.52\00:21:34.99 Yes. 00:21:35.02\00:21:36.36 This is the devil sharing his own heart. 00:21:36.39\00:21:37.93 And that's not necessarily the truth, obviously. 00:21:37.96\00:21:40.30 Now we know that, yes, her eyes were gonna be opened, 00:21:40.33\00:21:42.86 their eyes were gonna be opened to see things 00:21:42.90\00:21:44.53 that they had never seen before. 00:21:44.57\00:21:46.20 But notice accusation number three, 00:21:46.23\00:21:47.80 the fact that he's saying, "Oh, you know what? 00:21:47.84\00:21:49.67 God just, He knows that you're gonna be like Him, 00:21:49.70\00:21:52.37 and you're gonna know good from evil. 00:21:52.41\00:21:53.74 You're gonna be educated. 00:21:53.78\00:21:56.61 You're gonna be informed in such a way 00:21:56.64\00:21:58.71 that you've never know, God is withholding information. 00:21:58.75\00:22:01.75 He's withholding a good education from you. 00:22:01.78\00:22:04.62 He's keeping all of this other stuff from you." 00:22:04.65\00:22:07.06 In other words, God is selfish. 00:22:07.09\00:22:08.89 He's only looking out for Himself. 00:22:08.92\00:22:10.89 You are better off without God. 00:22:10.93\00:22:13.46 That's what we're seeing right here. 00:22:13.50\00:22:15.06 The enemy has Eve so confused that she now sees God 00:22:15.10\00:22:18.40 in a completely different way. 00:22:18.43\00:22:20.67 This leads her to distrust His word, 00:22:20.70\00:22:23.41 and be overcome by temptation. 00:22:23.44\00:22:25.01 You know the story. 00:22:25.04\00:22:26.37 There's an intrusion. 00:22:26.41\00:22:27.88 So I heard someone once say, sin is the result, get this, 00:22:31.18\00:22:34.25 sin is the result of a misrepresentation 00:22:34.28\00:22:36.18 of God's character. 00:22:36.22\00:22:37.55 Amen. It's right. 00:22:37.59\00:22:38.92 So why did Eve sin? 00:22:38.95\00:22:40.29 Well, obviously, she conceived that, 00:22:40.32\00:22:42.19 she felt to that temptation. 00:22:42.22\00:22:43.89 But ultimately, she felt to the temptation 00:22:43.93\00:22:45.79 because now she sees God in a completely different way 00:22:45.83\00:22:49.40 than what she did before. 00:22:49.43\00:22:50.77 She has been deceived into believing that God is not 00:22:50.80\00:22:53.97 who He says He is. 00:22:54.00\00:22:55.34 My friends, I have just a little over a minute here 00:22:55.37\00:22:56.77 to make this point very clear. 00:22:56.81\00:22:58.71 Many of us have the same... 00:22:58.74\00:23:01.84 We're entertaining thoughts and ideas of the enemy. 00:23:01.88\00:23:04.91 We're entertaining too much conversation 00:23:04.95\00:23:07.18 and too much time with the enemy 00:23:07.22\00:23:08.58 that he has our thoughts confused. 00:23:08.62\00:23:10.45 Many of us are if-ing and if-ing, 00:23:10.49\00:23:12.89 what-if-ing and questioning and budding God's Word 00:23:12.92\00:23:16.49 too much to the point that we're questioning 00:23:16.52\00:23:18.56 God's Word so much that now we distrust God Himself. 00:23:18.59\00:23:21.80 And when we come to the point to where we see God in a way 00:23:21.83\00:23:24.33 that He is not because we've entertained 00:23:24.37\00:23:26.00 too much conversation and too much time 00:23:26.03\00:23:28.00 with the enemy, then it's going to lead us 00:23:28.04\00:23:30.04 to live a life of sin, because sin is the result 00:23:30.07\00:23:32.97 of a misrepresentation of God's character. 00:23:33.01\00:23:35.34 When you see God for who He is, who He truly is, 00:23:35.38\00:23:39.35 then you will see a God of love. 00:23:39.38\00:23:41.05 You will see a God that's not withholding anything. 00:23:41.08\00:23:43.25 He wants you to be fully educated to the utmost. 00:23:43.28\00:23:47.22 In fact that, you know, you say, 00:23:47.26\00:23:48.59 "Well, but why does the devil keep fighting," right? 00:23:48.62\00:23:50.13 You know, he's still... 00:23:50.16\00:23:51.49 Well, because Revelation 12:12 clearly tells us 00:23:51.53\00:23:55.30 that he knows he has but a short time. 00:23:55.33\00:23:57.97 Okay, he may keep fighting in this battle, 00:23:58.00\00:24:00.50 but Jesus has won the war. 00:24:00.54\00:24:02.47 Bring yourself and put yourself on the side of Jesus, 00:24:02.50\00:24:05.64 become educated by the Master of the Universe, 00:24:05.67\00:24:08.68 and leave that devil alone. 00:24:08.71\00:24:10.15 Amen. 00:24:10.18\00:24:11.51 Praise the Lord. 00:24:11.55\00:24:12.88 Thank you, Ryan. 00:24:12.91\00:24:14.25 We're gonna take a short break. 00:24:14.28\00:24:15.62 We'll be right back. 00:24:15.65\00:24:16.99 Amen. 00:24:17.02\00:24:18.35 Ever wish you could watch a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel 00:24:20.96\00:24:23.83 again, or share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? 00:25:27.69\00:25:29.82 How did Eve miss this message that God gave so clearly? 00:25:29.86\00:25:36.03 And is it possible that maybe 00:25:36.06\00:25:37.50 we are missing a message for today? 00:25:37.53\00:25:40.84 Bible says in Genesis 2:17, 00:25:40.87\00:25:42.74 "But of the tree of the knowledge 00:25:42.77\00:25:44.11 of good and evil, thou shall not eat of it. 00:25:44.14\00:25:47.64 For in the day thou eatest thereof, 00:25:47.68\00:25:49.54 thou shall surely die." 00:25:49.58\00:25:51.18 I know you've read that many, many, many times. 00:25:51.21\00:25:54.08 But still, when I read it, it seems clear. 00:25:54.12\00:25:57.59 Of course, I've read a lot of things in Scripture 00:25:57.62\00:25:59.05 that seem really clear and I found out 00:25:59.09\00:26:00.86 I've done the opposite sometimes. 00:26:00.89\00:26:02.22 So we have to come back. 00:26:02.26\00:26:03.59 So let's look at that. 00:26:03.63\00:26:04.96 About 11 things that I find here 00:26:04.99\00:26:07.53 where Eve missed the mark. 00:26:07.56\00:26:10.37 So we're going to look at, number one we're going to miss. 00:26:10.40\00:26:12.57 As we read the passage of scripture there, 00:26:12.60\00:26:14.67 God's command, number one, was clear. 00:26:14.70\00:26:17.04 I think you brought that out. 00:26:17.07\00:26:18.41 God's command, number one, is very clear. 00:26:18.44\00:26:19.84 We just read how clear that it is. 00:26:19.87\00:26:22.21 And then, notice when she was questioned 00:26:22.24\00:26:25.08 by the serpent, number two, Eve, watered down 00:26:25.11\00:26:30.05 what she had been taught in the garden. 00:26:30.09\00:26:33.66 We had to be very careful, we've been taught 00:26:33.69\00:26:35.26 or the Holy Spirit has taught us certain truths. 00:26:35.29\00:26:37.69 And when we were put under pressure, 00:26:37.73\00:26:39.63 what do we do? 00:26:39.66\00:26:41.00 Water it down. 00:26:41.03\00:26:42.76 And that's a no-no with God. 00:26:42.80\00:26:44.17 God doesn't want us to water it down. 00:26:44.20\00:26:45.53 Look what happened here when she watered it down, 00:26:45.57\00:26:47.04 she got herself in trouble 00:26:47.07\00:26:48.40 and got the whole world in trouble. 00:26:48.44\00:26:49.77 Number three, 00:26:49.80\00:26:51.14 she didn't take God's Word seriously. 00:26:51.17\00:26:53.84 I realized you brought all these things up. 00:26:53.88\00:26:55.78 Because if she had realized how serious God was, 00:26:55.81\00:26:59.21 and the implications of what would happen, 00:26:59.25\00:27:02.42 right, to the world and all that followed after, 00:27:02.45\00:27:05.02 maybe she would have made, you know, a different decision. 00:27:05.05\00:27:07.99 So she didn't take God's Word seriously. 00:27:08.02\00:27:09.36 Number four, she began to repeat the message, 00:27:09.39\00:27:13.33 notice, to the serpent, 00:27:13.36\00:27:15.06 but I think you brought out, not exactly. 00:27:15.10\00:27:18.20 See, sometime, we start repeating 00:27:18.23\00:27:20.10 what we've heard, but not exactly 00:27:20.14\00:27:21.97 because we're afraid of stepping on somebody's toes 00:27:22.00\00:27:24.51 or we don't want any repercussions. 00:27:24.54\00:27:26.94 We don't want any letters written. 00:27:26.98\00:27:30.28 You know what I'm talking about here. 00:27:30.31\00:27:32.58 So we begin to kind of water it just, 00:27:32.61\00:27:34.22 and soften it just a little bit here. 00:27:34.25\00:27:35.58 That's what she did. 00:27:35.62\00:27:36.95 But it got her in trouble. 00:27:36.99\00:27:38.32 It's going to get you in trouble 00:27:38.35\00:27:39.69 and get me into trouble. 00:27:39.72\00:27:41.06 Number five, the serpent was already, 00:27:41.09\00:27:42.42 we know this, familiar with God's Word. 00:27:42.46\00:27:45.23 Yes. 00:27:45.26\00:27:46.59 We say, "Oh, don't give him any credit." 00:27:46.63\00:27:47.96 But you know what? 00:27:48.00\00:27:49.33 He knows the Word and he knows that well, 00:27:49.36\00:27:51.03 because he knows what he's going to do with it. 00:27:51.07\00:27:54.17 He knows if you know the Word too. 00:27:54.20\00:27:56.00 Number six, the serpent was well prepared. 00:27:56.04\00:27:59.84 I don't think he used this word, 00:27:59.87\00:28:01.21 Brother Ryan, but he twisted. 00:28:01.24\00:28:03.61 He was ready as soon as the word came out, 00:28:03.65\00:28:05.98 he's ready to twist it. 00:28:06.01\00:28:07.48 As soon as you, you know, get it. 00:28:07.52\00:28:09.15 I want to get this message out to the world. 00:28:09.18\00:28:10.75 He's going to start twisting things around 00:28:10.79\00:28:12.79 and try to twist it around your neck, 00:28:12.82\00:28:14.32 as it were, or around your tongue. 00:28:14.36\00:28:16.26 Yeah, or you got your foot in your mouth. 00:28:16.29\00:28:17.86 So he tries to twist God's Word. 00:28:17.89\00:28:20.40 Number seven, the serpent, notice this. 00:28:20.43\00:28:23.03 I thought it was interesting. 00:28:23.06\00:28:24.67 I sensed in here that the serpent 00:28:24.70\00:28:26.94 preyed on Eve's innocence. 00:28:26.97\00:28:29.90 Yes. Let's think about it. 00:28:29.94\00:28:31.51 He preyed on her. 00:28:31.54\00:28:32.87 You mentioned, all she knew was good, 00:28:32.91\00:28:34.61 wonderful, loving, kind. 00:28:34.64\00:28:35.98 And so he knew she was innocent. 00:28:36.01\00:28:37.71 And just as the enemy tries to prey on our children, 00:28:37.75\00:28:42.25 he starts at a very early age, 00:28:42.28\00:28:44.42 when they're somewhat as it were innocent. 00:28:44.45\00:28:46.35 He begins to twist things in their ears 00:28:46.39\00:28:48.46 and in their mind. 00:28:48.49\00:28:49.82 So we need to be careful that we don't add, 00:28:49.86\00:28:53.50 or we don't subtract from the Word of God, 00:28:53.53\00:28:56.46 Revelation 22:18 and 19 tells us there. 00:28:56.50\00:28:59.77 I mean, our name will be removed, 00:28:59.80\00:29:02.50 so we need to make sure. 00:29:02.54\00:29:03.87 But listen, I'm gonna say something quickly. 00:29:03.91\00:29:05.71 Don't let that stop you from giving the message 00:29:05.74\00:29:08.14 that God has given you. 00:29:08.18\00:29:09.88 I've heard many people say, 00:29:09.91\00:29:11.31 I'm afraid that I might get it wrong. 00:29:11.35\00:29:12.91 And so I'll influence somebody else's life 00:29:12.95\00:29:14.65 and they may be lost to the cause. 00:29:14.68\00:29:16.58 Be praying, studying, know what you know, 00:29:16.62\00:29:18.45 this truth of God's Word. 00:29:18.49\00:29:20.02 Give that truth. 00:29:20.06\00:29:21.39 Get that truth. 00:29:21.42\00:29:22.76 And if you happen, I'll be careful... 00:29:22.79\00:29:24.13 If you happen to make a mistake, right? 00:29:24.16\00:29:25.99 If you happen to, oh, you go back to them, 00:29:26.03\00:29:28.73 and you say, you know what? 00:29:28.76\00:29:30.20 I missed that point right there and I want to make it right. 00:29:30.23\00:29:33.20 But give the Word of God. 00:29:33.23\00:29:34.64 Number eight, serpent said, 00:29:34.67\00:29:37.54 part of the message was incorrect. 00:29:37.57\00:29:40.41 We know that. 00:29:40.44\00:29:41.78 He said part of it. 00:29:41.81\00:29:43.14 He didn't say all of it. 00:29:43.18\00:29:44.51 Basically, insinuation was part of it was incorrect. 00:29:44.55\00:29:47.25 And number nine, upon hearing this, 00:29:47.28\00:29:49.18 Eve could have... 00:29:49.22\00:29:51.29 When he said, "Well, this is not quite correct," 00:29:51.32\00:29:54.16 well, you look at... 00:29:54.19\00:29:55.52 Eve could have said, "Just a moment. 00:29:55.56\00:29:57.39 I'm going to go and I'm going to ask God. 00:29:57.43\00:30:00.76 I'm going to ask the master teacher, 00:30:00.80\00:30:03.03 I'm going to go back to the classroom 00:30:03.06\00:30:05.33 and I'm going to ask God, 00:30:05.37\00:30:06.84 and He will tell me whether it is. 00:30:06.87\00:30:08.84 She didn't do that. 00:30:08.87\00:30:10.54 See, this was part of her education, 00:30:10.57\00:30:12.14 she did not follow through with it. 00:30:12.17\00:30:13.98 She accepted the serpent's message, 00:30:14.01\00:30:16.14 number 10, instead of God's message, 00:30:16.18\00:30:19.28 couldn't we, deceive she accepted 00:30:19.31\00:30:21.08 serpent's message. 00:30:21.12\00:30:23.12 Now, in order to accept the devil's message, 00:30:23.15\00:30:26.86 we have to, number one, doubt. 00:30:26.89\00:30:29.09 So what did he do? 00:30:29.12\00:30:30.46 He began to plant doubt in her mind on her part about God 00:30:30.49\00:30:35.13 and what He had said. 00:30:35.16\00:30:36.63 You hear that a lot, 00:30:36.67\00:30:38.00 don't you when somebody is reading it? 00:30:38.03\00:30:39.37 Well, I know what it says. 00:30:39.40\00:30:40.74 But, well, it seems like now it's different now. 00:30:40.77\00:30:42.67 And so soon as the enemy hears that, 00:30:42.70\00:30:45.54 or he plants that in your mind, doubt, he's got you. 00:30:45.57\00:30:48.71 We never should doubt Scripture. 00:30:48.74\00:30:50.45 We should say, "Well, I don't understand it 00:30:50.48\00:30:51.88 maybe right now, I want to read more, 00:30:51.91\00:30:53.62 and I want to understand it. 00:30:53.65\00:30:54.98 But I'm not going to doubt what God has said." 00:30:55.02\00:30:56.79 So our lesson wants us to examine a little further 00:30:56.82\00:30:58.85 what Brother Ryan read there in Genesis 3:4-6 00:30:58.89\00:31:03.06 in the few moments that we've got left here. 00:31:03.09\00:31:05.23 And I can't say it will be any clearer. 00:31:05.26\00:31:07.86 But we pray that it'll be an addition, 00:31:07.90\00:31:09.50 it can be added on some things. 00:31:09.53\00:31:11.57 We must be very careful that we are not, 00:31:11.60\00:31:13.64 he used the word I think, deceived. 00:31:13.67\00:31:16.07 Even if we think we have some good training, 00:31:16.10\00:31:19.47 even if we think we have a good education, 00:31:19.51\00:31:22.58 even if we think that we are founded 00:31:22.61\00:31:24.65 on the rock, you know, 00:31:24.68\00:31:26.01 of Jesus Christ, we still must be very careful. 00:31:26.05\00:31:29.02 Because again, Adam and Eve, 00:31:29.05\00:31:30.49 you couldn't get any better teacher, 00:31:30.52\00:31:32.19 you just couldn't do it. 00:31:32.22\00:31:34.26 You didn't have to worry about it. 00:31:34.29\00:31:35.62 Sometime when you go with a class 00:31:35.66\00:31:36.99 of different things, now you have to... 00:31:37.03\00:31:38.46 Are they telling the truth, you know, 00:31:38.49\00:31:40.43 is what they're teaching the truth? 00:31:40.46\00:31:42.73 They didn't have to do that. 00:31:42.76\00:31:45.33 And so as we look at it here, 00:31:45.37\00:31:47.24 we must remember that Adam and Eve, again, 00:31:47.27\00:31:49.37 had the very best education in the garden 00:31:49.40\00:31:51.47 was brought out here. 00:31:51.51\00:31:52.84 Genesis 3:4-6, verse 4 said, 00:31:52.87\00:31:54.84 "And the serpent said unto the woman, ye shall not," 00:31:54.88\00:31:56.64 what, you read it. 00:31:56.68\00:31:58.01 Surely die. "Ye shall not surely die." 00:31:58.05\00:32:00.42 So what does this do? 00:32:00.45\00:32:02.12 Simply Matthew 21:21, you know, it's a good statement here. 00:32:02.15\00:32:06.12 It says, "Jesus speaking to the fruitless fig tree," 00:32:06.15\00:32:08.69 what does he do? 00:32:08.72\00:32:10.06 He plants what? Doubt. 00:32:10.09\00:32:11.43 First thing he does, the devil goes doubt, doubt, 00:32:11.46\00:32:13.36 and pretty soon we get turned. 00:32:13.40\00:32:14.73 "Jesus speaking of the fruitless fig tree, 00:32:14.76\00:32:16.26 He said, if you have faith and doubt," 00:32:16.30\00:32:19.13 I like it, "doubt not, ye shall not only do this, 00:32:19.17\00:32:22.40 which is done to the fig tree, 00:32:22.44\00:32:23.81 but also," then He speaks about the mountain 00:32:23.84\00:32:25.71 you can speak to it and it be cast into the sea. 00:32:25.74\00:32:29.21 Satan's first question was to arouse doubt. 00:32:29.24\00:32:32.81 And he's gonna do it to you 00:32:32.85\00:32:34.18 and he's going to do it to me, arouse. 00:32:34.22\00:32:35.75 You know, I receive letters sometime and people, 00:32:35.78\00:32:38.02 they challenge you on what has been said, 00:32:38.05\00:32:39.55 or what you're teaching or the Advent movement, 00:32:39.59\00:32:41.99 you have to look back and say, "Has God taught this? 00:32:42.02\00:32:44.59 Is it His word?" 00:32:44.63\00:32:45.96 You have to be sure. 00:32:45.99\00:32:47.33 And you have to be strong in that and stay 00:32:47.36\00:32:48.96 with it because you don't know who you're dealing with. 00:32:49.00\00:32:51.03 And people write letters and where they're at in their 00:32:51.07\00:32:52.60 Christian walk or who they are. 00:32:52.63\00:32:54.10 So stay with the Word of God. 00:32:54.14\00:32:55.84 So first question, he did raise doubt. 00:32:55.87\00:32:58.47 Now with this done, what did he do? 00:32:58.51\00:33:00.24 Once he got Eve to doubt, 00:33:00.28\00:33:02.74 automatically that put him in the position of authority. 00:33:02.78\00:33:06.55 He's in charge now, see, 00:33:06.58\00:33:08.52 because he already got her to doubt, 00:33:08.55\00:33:11.02 but he got her to doubt the clear, 00:33:11.05\00:33:12.85 simple command that God said, "Ye shall not surely die." 00:33:12.89\00:33:19.06 Literally, that reads in scripture, 00:33:19.09\00:33:21.20 ye will positively not die. 00:33:21.23\00:33:24.13 You know, no doubt about it. 00:33:24.17\00:33:26.57 Positive, you're not going to die. 00:33:26.60\00:33:27.97 And I'm sure he was persuasive when he said it. 00:33:28.00\00:33:30.01 He already had her under his control. 00:33:30.04\00:33:31.91 Notice that. 00:33:31.94\00:33:33.27 And, of course, Satan is John 8:44, what is he? 00:33:33.31\00:33:36.95 He's a liar and the truth is not him. 00:33:36.98\00:33:38.65 He's a father of lies. 00:33:38.68\00:33:40.38 He's never going to tell the truth because he is a liar. 00:33:40.42\00:33:42.62 Notice that. 00:33:42.65\00:33:43.99 For God, notice this, verse 5. 00:33:44.02\00:33:46.76 It says, notice, "For God doth know 00:33:46.79\00:33:48.86 that in this day ye eat thereof, 00:33:48.89\00:33:50.69 your eyes shall be," you mentioned it, what? 00:33:50.73\00:33:52.33 Opened. 00:33:52.36\00:33:53.70 "Your eyes shall be opened." 00:33:53.73\00:33:55.06 Notice this, don't fear about dying, 00:33:55.10\00:33:57.53 because you're not going to die. 00:33:57.57\00:33:58.90 Don't worry about that. 00:33:58.93\00:34:00.27 You know, to fear, think about fear God, 00:34:00.30\00:34:01.90 you will become, notice this, don't fear God, 00:34:01.94\00:34:04.47 maybe God's afraid that you're going 00:34:04.51\00:34:05.94 to be a rival, maybe God's fearing here that maybe 00:34:05.97\00:34:08.68 you're going to try to be an equal. 00:34:08.71\00:34:10.75 Maybe God is going to feel threatened, you see, 00:34:10.78\00:34:13.01 if you do this thing, you're a competition. 00:34:13.05\00:34:16.48 Then you notice what he said. 00:34:16.52\00:34:17.85 He said he charged God then with doing, what? 00:34:17.89\00:34:21.09 With lying. 00:34:21.12\00:34:22.46 It was mentioned, he charged God with lying. 00:34:22.49\00:34:23.83 And you can go through all that, 00:34:23.86\00:34:25.19 we don't have time to look through all of that. 00:34:25.23\00:34:26.56 I want to read something on the very end here 00:34:26.59\00:34:27.93 in a few seconds that we have, 00:34:27.96\00:34:29.30 I thought was very, very interesting here. 00:34:29.33\00:34:32.17 Patriarchs and Prophets, page 56, notice what it says. 00:34:32.20\00:34:35.34 "Adam understood that his companion 00:34:35.37\00:34:36.91 had transgressed the command of God 00:34:36.94\00:34:39.17 and disregarded the only prohibition laid upon him. 00:34:39.21\00:34:42.54 As a test of the fidelity and love, 00:34:42.58\00:34:44.61 there was a terrible struggle in the mind. 00:34:44.65\00:34:47.18 He mourned that he had permitted 00:34:47.22\00:34:48.68 Eve to wander from his side, but now the deed was done. 00:34:48.72\00:34:52.09 He must be separated from her whose society was a real joy." 00:34:52.12\00:34:57.63 You know, he had to make a choice 00:34:57.66\00:34:58.99 and we have to make a choice today. 00:34:59.03\00:35:01.13 Amen and amen. 00:35:01.16\00:35:03.23 Well, I have Wednesday's lesson 00:35:03.26\00:35:06.13 which is "Regaining What Was Lost." 00:35:06.17\00:35:10.01 So here we have Adam and Eve, they are in the Garden of Eden, 00:35:10.04\00:35:14.38 in the classroom with God. 00:35:14.41\00:35:17.88 They are learning about His character. 00:35:17.91\00:35:19.88 They're learning about His love in such an intimate way. 00:35:19.91\00:35:23.15 Can you imagine having God come alongside of you to teach, 00:35:23.18\00:35:27.69 but they hear the distortion of the truth, 00:35:27.72\00:35:31.59 they hear the twisting of God's Word. 00:35:31.63\00:35:35.96 And what did they do? 00:35:36.00\00:35:38.10 She chooses to accept that. 00:35:38.13\00:35:40.84 And I want to submit to you, 00:35:40.87\00:35:42.57 I think part of that was because Satan, 00:35:42.60\00:35:46.17 the serpent appealed to her ego. 00:35:46.21\00:35:49.68 Yeah. Sure. "What? 00:35:49.71\00:35:51.48 You're gonna let God tell you... 00:35:51.51\00:35:53.42 I mean, he said, you can eat of any tree in the garden, 00:35:53.45\00:35:56.89 just not from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 00:35:56.92\00:36:01.72 What is God saying?" 00:36:01.76\00:36:03.46 It's not up to you to decide what's good for you. 00:36:03.49\00:36:06.53 It's not up to you to decide what's bad for you. 00:36:06.56\00:36:09.43 I'm your Creator. 00:36:09.46\00:36:11.00 I'm going to put you in these protective boundaries. 00:36:11.03\00:36:14.04 So don't eat there. 00:36:14.07\00:36:15.44 But Satan convinces her. 00:36:15.47\00:36:19.01 "You can be like God." 00:36:19.04\00:36:20.58 How many people nowadays are trying to decide, 00:36:20.61\00:36:24.11 as you said, Jill, no absolute truth, you know, 00:36:24.15\00:36:27.68 what's good for me, I decide. 00:36:27.72\00:36:29.55 What's bad for me, I decide. 00:36:29.58\00:36:31.29 They don't go to the Word of God. 00:36:31.32\00:36:33.39 So what's happened now, 00:36:33.42\00:36:35.52 they were banished from the garden, 00:36:35.56\00:36:38.79 they are suffering the consequences of sin. 00:36:38.83\00:36:43.00 And more than ever, remedial education is required. 00:36:43.03\00:36:49.64 You've heard of remedial English, 00:36:49.67\00:36:51.74 that means it's a remedy, it's a cure. 00:36:51.77\00:36:54.61 So the way education, much of Christian education, 00:36:54.64\00:36:58.88 it's pointing back to Jesus, it is to teach 00:36:58.91\00:37:03.28 how he can restore because we see Eden lost, 00:37:03.32\00:37:07.36 we see the fall of mankind, 00:37:07.39\00:37:09.82 they fell under the influence of Satan. 00:37:09.86\00:37:12.93 But now the God's whole purpose is to restore His image in us. 00:37:12.96\00:37:18.77 It is to restore the Garden of Eden, 00:37:18.80\00:37:21.84 which is what's going to happen at the very last. 00:37:21.87\00:37:24.21 We're going to regain what was lost. 00:37:24.24\00:37:27.24 So let's turn to 2 Peter Chapter 1. 00:37:27.28\00:37:31.51 I love this verse. 00:37:31.55\00:37:32.88 This is one of my favorite passages. 00:37:32.91\00:37:35.35 Education is more than gaining knowledge. 00:37:35.38\00:37:40.09 Education is developing character. 00:37:40.12\00:37:44.93 And the good news is that God provides everything 00:37:44.96\00:37:47.66 we need for salvation and restoration. 00:37:47.70\00:37:50.27 So let's look at 2 Peter 1:3 and 4. 00:37:50.30\00:37:55.64 I'm going to read it briefly, 00:37:55.67\00:37:57.01 then I'll go through and break it down. 00:37:57.04\00:37:59.17 2 Peter 1:3-4, 00:37:59.21\00:38:02.54 "As His divine power has given to us all things 00:38:02.58\00:38:06.51 that pertain to life and godliness, 00:38:06.55\00:38:10.19 through the knowledge of Him, 00:38:10.22\00:38:11.75 who called us by glory and virtue, 00:38:11.79\00:38:15.32 by which have been given to us exceedingly great 00:38:15.36\00:38:18.86 and precious promises that, through these, 00:38:18.89\00:38:21.73 you may be partakers of the divine nature 00:38:21.76\00:38:25.87 having escaped the corruption 00:38:25.90\00:38:27.64 that is in the world through lust." 00:38:27.67\00:38:29.50 Wow, that's a mouthful. 00:38:29.54\00:38:31.11 Let's go back and take it apart. 00:38:31.14\00:38:33.84 Verse 2 or verse 3, 00:38:33.88\00:38:37.08 "His divine power, His grace is sufficient." 00:38:37.11\00:38:42.12 He is our sufficiency. 00:38:42.15\00:38:45.25 It's not our power. 00:38:45.29\00:38:46.86 It is His divine power has given to us, 00:38:46.89\00:38:50.46 well, how much? 00:38:50.49\00:38:52.36 All things, every spiritual resource. 00:38:52.39\00:38:56.40 Ephesians 1:11 says that every spiritual blessing 00:38:56.43\00:38:59.47 in the heavenly realms 00:38:59.50\00:39:00.84 is already yours in Christ Jesus. 00:39:00.87\00:39:03.67 So He's given us all things that pertain to life. 00:39:03.71\00:39:08.34 That word is Zoe in the Greek, this is eternal life. 00:39:08.38\00:39:12.65 We're not talking about just life on earth, 00:39:12.68\00:39:15.68 everything that pertains to eternal life 00:39:15.72\00:39:18.29 and to godliness. 00:39:18.32\00:39:20.72 What does that mean, godliness? 00:39:20.76\00:39:23.93 It means godly living, living in obedience to God. 00:39:23.96\00:39:27.93 We're loyal. 00:39:27.96\00:39:29.50 We're expressing our love and loyalty through obedience, 00:39:29.53\00:39:34.04 through the knowledge of Him... 00:39:34.07\00:39:37.17 Listen, this is an intimate knowledge of Him. 00:39:37.21\00:39:41.88 When you think Jesus said in John 17:3 00:39:41.91\00:39:46.88 that this is eternal life that you may know Him 00:39:46.92\00:39:52.22 and the one who He sent. 00:39:52.25\00:39:54.29 So it is through our intimate relationship with Lord 00:39:54.32\00:39:59.86 that we really get to know Him and can draw on His power. 00:39:59.89\00:40:04.43 He says, "Who," speaking of God, 00:40:04.47\00:40:08.10 "call this by glory and virtue, 00:40:08.14\00:40:11.17 by which," by what? 00:40:11.21\00:40:15.28 By His glory, His character and His virtue, 00:40:15.31\00:40:19.38 His moral excellence, through His character, 00:40:19.41\00:40:24.55 moral excellence "had been given to us 00:40:24.59\00:40:27.19 exceedingly great and precious promises. 00:40:27.22\00:40:31.56 And the covenant," the prince of the covenant, 00:40:31.59\00:40:35.43 the mediator of our covenant is Jesus Christ. 00:40:35.46\00:40:38.27 And 2 Corinthians 1:20 says, 00:40:38.30\00:40:41.04 "All of God's promises are ours in Christ Jesus." 00:40:41.07\00:40:45.07 Hallelujah. 00:40:45.11\00:40:46.57 So he says, "Had been given to us exceedingly great 00:40:46.61\00:40:51.78 and precious promises, that through these," 00:40:51.81\00:40:55.22 through what? 00:40:55.25\00:40:56.62 "Through His promises, 00:40:56.65\00:40:59.35 you may be partakers of His divine nature." 00:40:59.39\00:41:04.89 His character, His moral excellence, 00:41:04.93\00:41:08.43 we get to His righteousness that is imparted to us. 00:41:08.46\00:41:13.47 We're born again. 00:41:13.50\00:41:14.90 We're made anew. 00:41:14.94\00:41:16.27 Hallelujah. 00:41:16.30\00:41:18.01 The Holy Spirit indwells us. 00:41:18.04\00:41:22.01 And we have... 00:41:22.04\00:41:23.95 You know, when Adam and Eve fell, 00:41:23.98\00:41:26.41 I believe there was a spiritual DNA change. 00:41:26.45\00:41:31.05 The DNA was the devil's nature acquired. 00:41:31.09\00:41:35.02 But now we get to have partake of the new, 00:41:35.06\00:41:40.60 His divine nature. 00:41:40.63\00:41:43.30 So it is God's divine nature acquired, DNA, 00:41:43.33\00:41:49.90 having escaped the corruption, 00:41:49.94\00:41:52.01 that's the decomposition of the world 00:41:52.04\00:41:54.98 that's through lust. 00:41:55.01\00:41:58.11 And when it says that we escaped, 00:41:58.15\00:42:00.28 it means that we repent, we flee from it. 00:42:00.32\00:42:04.12 But now let's quickly, if I've got time, 00:42:04.15\00:42:06.12 go over the next verses. 00:42:06.15\00:42:09.32 Because once we accept, 00:42:09.36\00:42:11.69 "Hey, all of these promises are ours. 00:42:11.73\00:42:14.36 All God's promises are yours," 00:42:14.40\00:42:17.07 then there's some action that's required on our part. 00:42:17.10\00:42:20.14 He's giving us His divine nature. 00:42:20.17\00:42:22.84 He's giving us all of this promises. 00:42:22.87\00:42:25.04 But listen to this, verse 5, "But also for this reason, 00:42:25.07\00:42:29.84 because of all of His amazing grace," 00:42:29.88\00:42:31.95 everything we've just looked at, "giving all diligence," 00:42:31.98\00:42:36.02 you've got to dedicate yourself, 00:42:36.05\00:42:38.62 you've got to make a maximum effort to honor God. 00:42:38.65\00:42:43.53 Add to your faith virtue." 00:42:43.56\00:42:46.16 What's a virtue? 00:42:46.19\00:42:47.53 Moral excellence. 00:42:47.56\00:42:49.20 To your virtue, add knowledge, 00:42:49.23\00:42:50.93 that's a diligent study of God's Word 00:42:50.97\00:42:54.17 as you try to comprehend and apply His truth. 00:42:54.20\00:42:58.21 You know, the quarterly I wanted to read this 00:42:58.24\00:43:00.01 one little paragraph said, 00:43:00.04\00:43:01.84 "True education will lead to true knowledge, 00:43:01.88\00:43:06.78 the knowledge of Christ, and that's not only 00:43:06.82\00:43:10.42 will we become more like Him, but we may also stand 00:43:10.45\00:43:15.89 and share our knowledge in Him with others. 00:43:15.92\00:43:18.36 Hallelujah. 00:43:18.39\00:43:19.73 Then the scripture goes on. 00:43:19.76\00:43:21.10 2 Peter 1:6 says, 00:43:21.13\00:43:23.73 "Add to your knowledge self control." 00:43:23.77\00:43:28.24 Hey, self restrain, self discipline. 00:43:28.27\00:43:32.27 God does not control us. 00:43:32.31\00:43:34.41 He is not in the controlling business. 00:43:34.44\00:43:37.48 He granted you free will. 00:43:37.51\00:43:40.18 So, you know, it's actually wrong. 00:43:40.22\00:43:43.52 I used to say, "Well, you know, 00:43:43.55\00:43:45.29 let the Holy Spirit surrender and let Him control." 00:43:45.32\00:43:49.06 No, it is a moment by moment decision. 00:43:49.09\00:43:51.93 He is never in control. 00:43:51.96\00:43:54.06 We always have to be submitting to Him. 00:43:54.10\00:43:56.77 So there's that self-discipline, 00:43:56.80\00:43:58.40 to self control perseverance. 00:43:58.43\00:44:01.10 That's patient endurance as we apply the promises 00:44:01.14\00:44:04.37 of God's Word, to perseverance at godliness, 00:44:04.41\00:44:09.04 to godliness brotherly kindness, 00:44:09.08\00:44:12.11 to brotherly kindness love. 00:44:12.15\00:44:14.32 Now listen to what he says, 00:44:14.35\00:44:16.38 "For these things are yours and abound, 00:44:16.42\00:44:18.12 you will neither be barren or unfruitful. 00:44:18.15\00:44:22.42 But he who lacks these things is short sighted 00:44:22.46\00:44:26.33 even to blindness, 00:44:26.36\00:44:28.06 and is forgotten that he was cleansed 00:44:28.10\00:44:30.63 from his old sins." 00:44:30.67\00:44:33.17 Some people are suffering spiritual amnesia. 00:44:33.20\00:44:35.80 That's right. 00:44:35.84\00:44:37.17 We don't remember Christ's sacrifice for our sins. 00:44:37.21\00:44:39.97 Therefore, Brethren, be even more diligent to make 00:44:40.01\00:44:43.08 your call an election sure, 00:44:43.11\00:44:46.58 pursuing these spiritual guidelines. 00:44:46.61\00:44:50.12 And in so doing, verse 11, says, 00:44:50.15\00:44:53.22 "An entrance will be supplied to you abundantly 00:44:53.25\00:44:56.99 into the everlasting kingdom 00:44:57.03\00:45:00.50 of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ." 00:45:00.53\00:45:02.40 Amen. 00:45:02.43\00:45:03.77 Amen. Amen. 00:45:03.80\00:45:05.13 Praise the Lord. Yes. 00:45:05.17\00:45:06.50 As we continue in our study of school 00:45:06.53\00:45:10.71 and education, I've got Thursday's part, 00:45:10.74\00:45:14.51 "The Despisers of Authority." 00:45:14.54\00:45:17.35 You know, that is so common now, 00:45:17.38\00:45:19.31 the despisers of authority. 00:45:19.35\00:45:20.82 It seems like it's everywhere we look, 00:45:20.85\00:45:22.72 somebody despises the authority that is in charge. 00:45:22.75\00:45:26.19 Now, as we talked about the Garden of Eden and school, 00:45:26.22\00:45:29.52 we know that... 00:45:29.56\00:45:30.89 It makes me think back to my school days. 00:45:30.93\00:45:32.89 There was always some kids in the class who seemed like 00:45:32.93\00:45:36.23 they just got it right off the bat, you know. 00:45:36.26\00:45:38.80 They make good grades, 00:45:38.83\00:45:40.17 they didn't have to take the books home. 00:45:40.20\00:45:41.60 You know, I wasn't one of those fortunately. 00:45:41.64\00:45:44.11 Unfortunately, 00:45:44.14\00:45:45.47 I was one who had to take books home and study. 00:45:45.51\00:45:49.78 But we find that there are those 00:45:49.81\00:45:51.51 who are blessed with that, as I said, 00:45:51.55\00:45:53.88 I wasn't one of those. 00:45:53.92\00:45:55.78 And as we get into our study today, 00:45:55.82\00:45:58.02 we're going to find out as Shelley was bringing out 00:45:58.05\00:46:00.32 in 1 Peter Chapter 1, 00:46:00.36\00:46:02.46 God just revealed a bunch of the blessings 00:46:02.49\00:46:05.76 that He has for us. 00:46:05.79\00:46:07.13 Yes. 00:46:07.16\00:46:08.50 But now I have Chapter 2, 00:46:08.53\00:46:10.47 and we're kind of going the different direction now, 00:46:10.50\00:46:13.13 as the adversary always gets in, 00:46:13.17\00:46:15.37 you know, he gets in his blows. 00:46:15.40\00:46:18.47 And Chapter 2, in my Bible, 00:46:18.51\00:46:21.08 it's listed under destructive doctrines, 00:46:21.11\00:46:24.25 destructive doctrines. 00:46:24.28\00:46:25.61 As we look at Chapter 2, 00:46:25.65\00:46:27.55 the question in the quarterly says, 00:46:27.58\00:46:30.52 what powerful condemning words is Peter saying here? 00:46:30.55\00:46:33.59 And that is in 2 Peter 2:1-17, 00:46:33.62\00:46:36.59 we don't have time to look at all of those. 00:46:36.62\00:46:38.59 But I want to touch on a few of those things. 00:46:38.63\00:46:41.40 Peter warns us of destructive doctrines. 00:46:41.43\00:46:44.67 Notice a few of them. 00:46:44.70\00:46:46.03 In verse 1, first of all, 00:46:46.07\00:46:48.80 he warns the false prophets and false teachers. 00:46:48.84\00:46:53.48 False prophets and false teachers among you. 00:46:53.51\00:46:57.08 You know, teachers of spiritual matters, 00:46:57.11\00:47:00.58 as well as teachers in the public school system 00:47:00.62\00:47:03.32 have a great responsibility. 00:47:03.35\00:47:05.55 A great responsibility, because they are forming lives. 00:47:05.59\00:47:09.79 The people in their class are there to learn, 00:47:09.82\00:47:12.66 and to bring it into their way of life. 00:47:12.69\00:47:15.90 And so he says that there are spiritual teachers 00:47:15.93\00:47:19.47 that are false teachers. 00:47:19.50\00:47:22.10 They have a huge responsibility to preach truth, 00:47:22.14\00:47:24.87 even in our public schools, you know. 00:47:24.91\00:47:27.61 And we find in our public schools, 00:47:27.64\00:47:29.44 there are a number of wonderful 00:47:29.48\00:47:30.88 Christian teachers, in our public schools, 00:47:30.91\00:47:34.12 who will compromise 00:47:34.15\00:47:35.68 when it comes to the origin of man. 00:47:35.72\00:47:38.62 And we think... 00:47:38.65\00:47:39.99 I don't quite understand that, you know, 00:47:40.02\00:47:41.36 the Word of God says that God created man 00:47:41.39\00:47:43.69 in His image. 00:47:43.73\00:47:45.06 And yet we have good Christian people, 00:47:45.09\00:47:47.16 some, not all, in the public schools 00:47:47.20\00:47:51.43 that will water down the truth to make it easier, you know. 00:47:51.47\00:47:57.54 Each student is being formed in the image of God, 00:47:57.57\00:48:00.38 or in the image of the world. 00:48:00.41\00:48:03.45 And you know, we can put parents 00:48:03.48\00:48:07.15 into the category of teachers. 00:48:07.18\00:48:08.72 That's right. Can't we? 00:48:08.75\00:48:10.09 That's right. 00:48:10.12\00:48:11.45 Parents have much more influence than the teachers do. 00:48:11.49\00:48:12.82 Because how many hours of the day, you know, 00:48:12.85\00:48:14.79 are the kids at home with the parents 00:48:14.82\00:48:17.03 rather than in the school. 00:48:17.06\00:48:18.46 So teachers are not just teachers 00:48:18.49\00:48:22.60 influenced the children, but parents even more so 00:48:22.63\00:48:25.93 because children are impacted. 00:48:25.97\00:48:28.04 You know, Solomon wrote in Proverbs 22:6, he says, 00:48:28.07\00:48:31.57 "Train up a child in the way that he should go, 00:48:31.61\00:48:34.21 and when he is old," what? 00:48:34.24\00:48:35.74 "He will depart from it." 00:48:35.78\00:48:37.51 You know, we need to unpack that just a little bit. 00:48:37.55\00:48:40.58 Proverbs 22:6 sometimes feels like a hammer, 00:48:40.62\00:48:44.59 and beats down the already broken-hearted people 00:48:44.62\00:48:47.46 who have watched their children leave the church, 00:48:47.49\00:48:50.73 leave the faith. 00:48:50.76\00:48:52.29 And yet they're claiming the promise of Proverbs 22:6. 00:48:52.33\00:48:56.97 So sometimes, you know, we've seen good, honest, 00:48:57.00\00:49:00.40 faithful parents bring up their children in the nurture 00:49:00.44\00:49:03.91 and admonition of the Lord. 00:49:03.94\00:49:05.34 And yet when the children became of age, 00:49:05.37\00:49:07.88 and even earlier, and decided to go another path. 00:49:07.91\00:49:11.51 And so we think, well, is that not true? 00:49:11.55\00:49:13.88 I've struggled with the understanding 00:49:13.92\00:49:15.32 of that passage myself. 00:49:15.35\00:49:17.15 On the surface, 00:49:17.19\00:49:18.52 it does seem that there is a promise 00:49:18.55\00:49:20.82 they will not depart. 00:49:20.86\00:49:22.39 That's what it says. 00:49:22.42\00:49:23.76 On the other hand, 00:49:23.79\00:49:25.13 there seems to be clear exceptions to the rules. 00:49:25.16\00:49:27.26 We all know that and maybe it's even happened 00:49:27.30\00:49:29.20 in our own families, 00:49:29.23\00:49:31.27 that there seems to be an exception to the rule, 00:49:31.30\00:49:34.17 and that it means pretty much the opposite 00:49:34.20\00:49:36.60 of what we've taken it to mean. 00:49:36.64\00:49:39.07 And let me explain that a little bit. 00:49:39.11\00:49:41.14 It is not necessarily a promise to good parents, 00:49:41.18\00:49:45.31 but a warning to bad parents 00:49:45.35\00:49:47.45 who would shirk their responsibilities, 00:49:47.48\00:49:50.29 shirk their responsibilities to guide their children, 00:49:50.32\00:49:52.92 especially teenage children in the ways of the Lord. 00:49:52.95\00:49:57.89 This verse is meant to be a warning 00:49:57.93\00:50:00.50 about bad results of permissive parenting, 00:50:00.53\00:50:04.60 a failing to set boundaries and give guidance 00:50:04.63\00:50:08.30 to adolescence, you know, 00:50:08.34\00:50:10.17 their characters are being developed 00:50:10.21\00:50:11.84 that will form the rest of their lives. 00:50:11.87\00:50:15.04 And so we have to be so responsible. 00:50:15.08\00:50:18.38 And we have to teach our children to recognize 00:50:18.41\00:50:20.92 the authority of the Word of God, 00:50:20.95\00:50:23.79 the authority of the Word of God. 00:50:23.82\00:50:25.55 We must teach the children to respect the authority 00:50:25.59\00:50:28.52 of the Word of God, to believe it, 00:50:28.56\00:50:30.33 to embrace it, and to live it. 00:50:30.36\00:50:32.43 Yes. 00:50:32.46\00:50:34.20 I'm talking about eternal life and eternal death 00:50:34.23\00:50:36.90 in these matters. 00:50:36.93\00:50:38.27 The responsibilities on every teacher, every parent, 00:50:38.30\00:50:41.77 I would say, you have the influence 00:50:41.80\00:50:43.74 over your students, 00:50:43.77\00:50:45.34 you have the influence over your children, 00:50:45.37\00:50:47.51 over your grandchildren even, regardless of their age. 00:50:47.54\00:50:52.85 And as we go down to 2 Peter 2:3, 00:50:52.88\00:50:56.32 Peter tells us that there are false teachers 00:50:56.35\00:50:58.32 will exploit you with deceptive words. 00:50:58.35\00:51:03.22 Well, verses 4-8, God tells us of the doom of false teachers. 00:51:03.26\00:51:09.60 And in verse 6, he talks about Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:51:09.63\00:51:12.27 And I want to look at that with me 00:51:12.30\00:51:13.64 in your Bible in 2 Peter 2:6. 00:51:13.67\00:51:18.64 It says, "In turning the cities 00:51:18.67\00:51:20.08 of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, 00:51:20.11\00:51:22.44 condemn them to destruction, 00:51:22.48\00:51:24.61 making them an example 00:51:24.65\00:51:27.48 to those who afterward would live ungodly." 00:51:27.52\00:51:30.62 We have such a responsibility to teach right. 00:51:33.72\00:51:38.66 And you know, even though sin is in the world so strongly, 00:51:38.69\00:51:42.36 there is a limit to God's patience. 00:51:42.40\00:51:43.90 That's right. True. 00:51:43.93\00:51:45.27 And I have a quote here 00:51:45.30\00:51:46.63 from Patriarchs and Prophets, page 162. 00:51:46.67\00:51:49.34 And it is entitled Limits to Sinning. 00:51:49.37\00:51:52.17 The flames that consume the cities of plain shed 00:51:52.21\00:51:55.68 their warning light down even to our time. 00:51:55.71\00:51:59.01 We are taught the fearful and solemn blessing 00:51:59.05\00:52:01.78 that while God's mercy bears long with the transgressor, 00:52:01.82\00:52:06.15 there is a limit beyond which men may not go and sin. 00:52:06.19\00:52:10.69 When that limit is reached, 00:52:10.73\00:52:12.43 then the offers of mercy are withdrawn, 00:52:12.46\00:52:15.30 and the ministration of judgment begins. 00:52:15.33\00:52:19.27 So, well, that is heavy. 00:52:19.30\00:52:20.64 That's right, there is a limit to God's mercy. 00:52:20.67\00:52:23.57 Let's continue now in verse 9 00:52:23.61\00:52:27.91 of that same chapter, Chapter 2. 00:52:27.94\00:52:29.88 "Then the Lord knows 00:52:29.91\00:52:31.25 how to deliver the godly out of temptation." 00:52:31.28\00:52:33.31 Thank you, Lord. 00:52:33.35\00:52:34.68 "And to reserve the unjust 00:52:34.72\00:52:37.15 under punishment for the Day of Judgment." 00:52:37.19\00:52:40.66 And then it continues, 00:52:40.69\00:52:42.02 "And especially those who walk according to the flesh 00:52:42.06\00:52:44.89 and the lust of uncleanness, 00:52:44.93\00:52:46.59 and despise authority, 00:52:46.63\00:52:49.53 they are presumptuous self-willed, 00:52:49.56\00:52:52.23 they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries. 00:52:52.27\00:52:55.84 And this was a really eye opener, 00:52:55.87\00:52:58.17 whereas angels who are greater in power 00:52:58.21\00:53:00.68 and might do not bring a reviling accusation 00:53:00.71\00:53:03.75 against them before the Lord." 00:53:03.78\00:53:06.72 That's fairly strong itself. 00:53:06.75\00:53:09.58 If you notice that sharp rebuke that Peter talks about 00:53:09.62\00:53:13.12 those who despise authority in verse 10, 00:53:13.15\00:53:18.43 he writes about it, then, as if it were us now. 00:53:18.46\00:53:21.13 It's like he's writing today's news, 00:53:21.16\00:53:23.16 even back then, it was the same. 00:53:23.20\00:53:25.43 There are those who despise authority 00:53:25.47\00:53:27.74 that dates all the way back to heaven itself. 00:53:27.77\00:53:31.74 I think Brother Ryan mentioned something about this. 00:53:31.77\00:53:34.81 The Bible tells us that there was an angel, 00:53:34.84\00:53:37.61 by the name of Lucifer, 00:53:37.65\00:53:39.21 and he despised the authority of God, 00:53:39.25\00:53:42.58 he despised the authority of God. 00:53:42.62\00:53:44.89 And as a result, he was cast out of heaven. 00:53:44.92\00:53:47.79 You can read about that in Ezekiel 28, 00:53:47.82\00:53:50.36 and Revelation 12. 00:53:50.39\00:53:52.26 And then as we bring that down to our church 00:53:52.29\00:53:54.90 situations now, we as a church body must work 00:53:54.93\00:53:59.57 in the assumption of certain levels of authority 00:53:59.60\00:54:03.17 even in the church. 00:54:03.20\00:54:06.07 I want to look at Hebrews Chapter 13, 00:54:06.11\00:54:10.25 just for a second, and I want you to see 00:54:10.28\00:54:12.71 where I'm coming from on this. 00:54:12.75\00:54:16.38 Hebrews 13:7 says, 00:54:16.42\00:54:18.69 "Remember those who rule over you 00:54:18.72\00:54:21.26 who have spoken the Word of God to you, whose faith follow, 00:54:21.29\00:54:25.43 considering the outcome of their conduct." 00:54:25.46\00:54:28.26 Again, he mentions those in 17, verse 17, 00:54:28.30\00:54:31.93 "Obey those who rule over you and be submissive, 00:54:31.97\00:54:35.80 and that they watch out for your souls as those 00:54:35.84\00:54:38.67 who must give an account. 00:54:38.71\00:54:40.38 Let them do so with joy, and not with grief, 00:54:40.41\00:54:44.18 for that would be unprofitable for you." 00:54:44.21\00:54:46.41 And then again in verse 24, 00:54:46.45\00:54:48.48 "Greet all of those who rule over you 00:54:48.52\00:54:51.65 and all of the saints. 00:54:51.69\00:54:54.82 So we find that no man is an island unto himself. 00:54:54.86\00:54:57.99 That's right. 00:54:58.03\00:54:59.36 You know, each one of us in the structure 00:54:59.39\00:55:00.96 of our present environment, 00:55:01.00\00:55:03.16 we all have someone that is over us. 00:55:03.20\00:55:06.03 And we have to learn the authority that they have, 00:55:06.07\00:55:10.01 and find our place in that and be submissive to that. 00:55:10.04\00:55:14.68 We are called to submit and obey those in authority. 00:55:14.71\00:55:18.48 Yes. 00:55:18.51\00:55:20.45 To the degree that one is being faithful 00:55:20.48\00:55:23.22 to the Lord Himself. 00:55:23.25\00:55:24.95 Now you think about that. 00:55:24.99\00:55:26.79 There are those who resist authority 00:55:26.82\00:55:28.29 in every group, in every church, 00:55:28.32\00:55:30.93 there is also those 00:55:30.96\00:55:37.83 that are resisting in every group, everywhere. 00:55:37.87\00:55:41.84 And we find that we have to give to authority. 00:55:41.87\00:55:44.87 We are not the final word, any one of us. 00:55:44.91\00:55:46.57 Amen. Amen. 00:55:46.61\00:55:47.94 Amen. 00:55:47.98\00:55:49.31 Thank you so much, Pastor Ronnie Shelton, 00:55:49.34\00:55:50.68 Pastor Kenny, Pastor Ryan, what an amazing launch, 00:55:50.71\00:55:53.65 you could say, to fourth quarter. 00:55:53.68\00:55:55.85 We just have a few moments left and give you each a moment 00:55:55.88\00:55:58.22 to share about your day or about the lesson. 00:55:58.25\00:55:59.59 That's right. 00:55:59.62\00:56:00.96 It's very simple from my perspective, 00:56:00.99\00:56:02.36 be educated by Jesus, leave that devil alone. 00:56:02.39\00:56:05.66 Very simple, very simple. 00:56:05.69\00:56:08.56 1 Corinthians 10:11 and 12 quickly, 00:56:08.60\00:56:10.37 "Now all things happen unto us for," what? 00:56:10.40\00:56:12.93 "They're examples, and they are written 00:56:12.97\00:56:15.10 for our admonition upon 00:56:15.14\00:56:16.47 whom the ends of the earth are come. 00:56:16.50\00:56:17.84 Wherefore let him that thinketh 00:56:17.87\00:56:19.47 he standeth take heed lest he fall." 00:56:19.51\00:56:21.61 Well, mine would be simply this, 00:56:21.64\00:56:23.85 that God is a God of restoration. 00:56:23.88\00:56:26.38 And He intends to restore the image of Jesus 00:56:26.41\00:56:30.69 and as we open the Bible in Genesis, 00:56:30.72\00:56:33.02 Eden lost, Revelation, Eden restored. 00:56:33.05\00:56:35.92 Amen. 00:56:35.96\00:56:37.29 My closing summation 00:56:37.33\00:56:38.66 would be without proper authority in place, 00:56:38.69\00:56:40.50 the world would be in havoc, wouldn't it? 00:56:40.53\00:56:42.50 What wouldn't it though? 00:56:42.53\00:56:43.87 Oh, wouldn't it be a mess? That's right. 00:56:43.90\00:56:45.30 But we are thankful that God 00:56:45.33\00:56:46.80 is still on His throne of authority. 00:56:46.84\00:56:49.30 And He's still in charge. 00:56:49.34\00:56:50.67 That's right. Praise the Lord. 00:56:50.71\00:56:52.04 Amen. 00:56:52.07\00:56:53.41 What an incredible study. 00:56:53.44\00:56:54.78 I'm looking forward to the rest of the lessons here 00:56:54.81\00:56:56.95 as we study together. 00:56:56.98\00:56:58.35 I want to leave you with this closing scripture. 00:56:58.38\00:57:00.68 This is 2 Timothy, this is Paul's, you could say, 00:57:00.72\00:57:04.45 at the end of his life, 00:57:04.49\00:57:05.82 he's in prison writing to his son in the faith, 00:57:05.85\00:57:09.56 parting words. 00:57:09.59\00:57:10.93 This is 2 Timothy 2:15. 00:57:10.96\00:57:14.06 New King James says, 00:57:14.10\00:57:15.50 "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God." 00:57:15.53\00:57:19.37 Now King James says what, Pastor Kenny? 00:57:19.40\00:57:21.44 Study. 00:57:21.47\00:57:22.80 Study to show thyself approved unto God. 00:57:22.84\00:57:25.97 A workman who does not need to be ashamed, 00:57:26.01\00:57:29.14 rightly dividing the word of truth. 00:57:29.18\00:57:32.61 That is what the goal of all education is, 00:57:32.65\00:57:35.62 that we need to study to know the character of God, 00:57:35.65\00:57:39.15 know who God is, 00:57:39.19\00:57:41.86 and then have that character be restored in us, 00:57:41.89\00:57:46.36 as Shelley brought out so beautifully, 00:57:46.39\00:57:48.36 that reconciliation or restoration 00:57:48.40\00:57:50.77 back to the Father. 00:57:50.80\00:57:52.77 That is the goal when Jesus came 00:57:52.80\00:57:55.04 and died on the cross and that is His goal 00:57:55.07\00:57:56.97 for each one of us to be restored 00:57:57.01\00:57:58.94 into the image of the Father. 00:57:58.97\00:58:01.18 Join us next week, we're going to be picking up 00:58:01.21\00:58:04.15 with lesson number two, The Family. 00:58:04.18\00:58:06.58
