Let's pray. 00:02:38.89\00:02:40.22 Loving Father in heaven, 00:02:40.26\00:02:41.59 truly is a privilege to be able to come together 00:02:41.62\00:02:42.99 to study Your Word. 00:02:43.02\00:02:44.59 Lord, we thank You for Your Word. 00:02:44.63\00:02:45.99 We thank You for the Holy Spirit 00:02:46.03\00:02:47.36 that inspired holy men of God to write it down. 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.93 Lord, we ask today 00:02:49.96\00:02:51.30 that the Holy Spirit would be present 00:02:51.33\00:02:52.67 in each of our hearts and each of our lives, 00:02:52.70\00:02:54.57 clear our minds of all the rubbish the things 00:02:54.60\00:02:56.54 of this world and may we concentrate 00:02:56.57\00:02:58.21 on heavenly things. 00:02:58.24\00:02:59.71 Lord, we pray for each of you or each listener, 00:02:59.74\00:03:01.94 wherever they might be, 00:03:01.98\00:03:03.31 whatever they may be doing 00:03:03.35\00:03:04.68 that the Holy Spirit will just put the word 00:03:04.71\00:03:06.38 deep in their heart, in their mind 00:03:06.41\00:03:07.82 that they may be drawn closer to You. 00:03:07.85\00:03:09.82 We just thank You for this privilege, 00:03:09.85\00:03:11.19 thank You for the invitation that we may give 00:03:11.22\00:03:13.22 for the Holy Spirit to come now. 00:03:13.25\00:03:15.09 Bless each and every one, 00:03:15.12\00:03:16.46 the production crew and each one 00:03:16.49\00:03:17.83 and maybe for Your honor, and for Your glory. 00:03:17.86\00:03:19.96 In Jesus' name, amen. Amen. 00:03:20.00\00:03:23.37 I know one thing that I have appreciated 00:03:23.40\00:03:24.97 about this particular lesson 00:03:25.00\00:03:27.47 is the author has given particular extra attention 00:03:27.50\00:03:32.97 to the study of this particular topic. 00:03:33.01\00:03:35.04 And I try my best most of the time 00:03:35.08\00:03:37.91 to try to come up 00:03:37.95\00:03:39.28 with my own words of saying things, 00:03:39.31\00:03:40.65 my own way of approaching scripture, 00:03:40.68\00:03:42.88 but sometimes, you know, 00:03:42.92\00:03:44.25 you find the particular way that the author says something, 00:03:44.29\00:03:46.96 you know, you just can't come up 00:03:46.99\00:03:48.32 with a better way to explain it. 00:03:48.36\00:03:49.69 And so Sabbath Afternoon's lesson, 00:03:49.72\00:03:52.83 I just have to read this to you 00:03:52.86\00:03:54.20 'cause I think it sets the clear foundation 00:03:54.23\00:03:56.26 for Sunday's lesson as well as we go through 00:03:56.30\00:03:58.70 all the other lessons as well, 00:03:58.73\00:04:00.07 but I'm gonna read this here. 00:04:00.10\00:04:01.44 Listen to these statistics because it's quite eye-opening. 00:04:01.47\00:04:04.01 It says, 00:04:04.04\00:04:05.37 "More than 6,000 languages are spoken 00:04:05.41\00:04:07.54 among the world's billions." 00:04:07.58\00:04:09.91 That's amazing. 00:04:09.94\00:04:11.41 "The complete Bible has been translated 00:04:11.45\00:04:13.62 into more than 600 languages, 00:04:13.65\00:04:17.29 with the New Testament or some portions translated 00:04:17.32\00:04:19.99 in more than 2,500 languages, as well. 00:04:20.02\00:04:25.49 But at the same time, 00:04:25.53\00:04:26.86 it is still less than half 00:04:26.90\00:04:28.23 of the known languages of the world. 00:04:28.26\00:04:31.17 An estimated 1.5 billion people 00:04:31.20\00:04:33.67 do not have any part of the Scripture translated 00:04:33.70\00:04:36.44 into their first language. 00:04:36.47\00:04:38.87 While there is still much work to be done, 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.58 the efforts of the Bible societies 00:04:40.61\00:04:42.61 has ensured that six billion people 00:04:42.64\00:04:46.05 can read Scripture." 00:04:46.08\00:04:47.42 Praise God. Praise God for that. 00:04:47.45\00:04:49.02 And he goes on to say, 00:04:49.05\00:04:50.39 "And what a blessing to be among those 00:04:50.42\00:04:51.92 who do have the Bible in their own language! 00:04:51.95\00:04:54.36 We often take it for granted, 00:04:54.39\00:04:55.82 forgetting that not only do many not have the Bible, 00:04:55.86\00:04:58.66 but also that for centuries in Europe, 00:04:58.69\00:05:01.86 the Bible was purposely kept away 00:05:01.90\00:05:04.10 from the masses. 00:05:04.13\00:05:06.60 Thanks to the printing press and the Reformation, 00:05:06.63\00:05:09.04 that is no longer the case. 00:05:09.07\00:05:10.41 Those of us who do indeed have the Bible 00:05:10.44\00:05:13.11 continue to look at how we can filled with the Holy Spirit, 00:05:13.14\00:05:16.48 learn to study the Word and come to know 00:05:16.51\00:05:18.48 the Lord revealed in its pages." 00:05:18.51\00:05:20.78 So I thought that was a great foundation 00:05:20.82\00:05:22.48 for what we're gonna be discussing. 00:05:22.52\00:05:24.35 In fact, I'm gonna jump right into Sunday's lesson, 00:05:24.39\00:05:27.32 Understanding the scriptures. 00:05:27.36\00:05:28.99 Is it important 00:05:29.02\00:05:30.36 that we understand the scriptures? 00:05:30.39\00:05:31.73 Oh, yeah. 00:05:31.76\00:05:33.09 Not, you know, I believe 00:05:33.13\00:05:34.46 that while I don't think there's anyone that can say, 00:05:34.50\00:05:36.63 I understand all the Bible, 00:05:36.67\00:05:38.83 you know, 'cause there's passages 00:05:38.87\00:05:40.20 that even I read that I'm like, "You know, I don't." 00:05:40.24\00:05:42.47 Some of them, I just can't quite explain. 00:05:42.50\00:05:44.07 Some of them I don't fully understand, 00:05:44.11\00:05:45.97 but in faith, 00:05:46.01\00:05:47.34 I believe that they're there for a purpose. 00:05:47.38\00:05:49.04 And I believe that as the Bible tells us, 00:05:49.08\00:05:50.45 the Holy Spirit wants to lead and guide us into all truth. 00:05:50.48\00:05:53.38 He wants to bring all things to our remembrance. 00:05:53.42\00:05:55.95 So the question I'm asking in this opening segment 00:05:55.98\00:05:58.29 is for what purpose 00:05:58.32\00:06:00.26 was the Bible made available for us. 00:06:00.29\00:06:02.69 And I wanna go to 2 Timothy 3:16. 00:06:02.72\00:06:05.53 This is kind of a nice good text 00:06:05.56\00:06:07.26 to set the foundation for everything 00:06:07.30\00:06:09.16 that I'm about to discuss on Sunday's lesson. 00:06:09.20\00:06:11.40 2 Timothy 3:16. 00:06:11.43\00:06:14.14 And the Bible says this, 00:06:14.17\00:06:16.34 "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, 00:06:16.37\00:06:19.91 and is profitable for doctrine, 00:06:19.94\00:06:21.81 for reproof, for correction, 00:06:21.84\00:06:24.28 for instruction in righteousness, 00:06:24.31\00:06:26.82 that the man of God may be complete." 00:06:26.85\00:06:29.08 That is perfect. 00:06:29.12\00:06:30.45 God wants to bring you to your completeness, 00:06:30.49\00:06:32.35 "thoroughly equipped for every good work." 00:06:32.39\00:06:36.06 I think that's a great text and the question we asked, 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.43 for what purpose 00:06:38.46\00:06:39.79 was the Bible made available for us? 00:06:39.83\00:06:42.00 I believe that there are three main reasons obviously, 00:06:42.03\00:06:44.27 we could come up 00:06:44.30\00:06:45.63 with more than just three reasons 00:06:45.67\00:06:47.00 as to why God would make the Word of God 00:06:47.04\00:06:49.74 readily available for us in our own language 00:06:49.77\00:06:51.74 to read and to study and to understand, 00:06:51.77\00:06:53.74 but I came up with three here 00:06:53.78\00:06:55.21 to confirm God's amazing work in history. 00:06:55.24\00:06:58.51 And we're gonna come back to each one of these 00:06:58.55\00:06:59.88 and talk in detail. 00:06:59.91\00:07:01.25 Number two, 00:07:01.28\00:07:02.62 to reveal His plan for salvation for men 00:07:02.65\00:07:04.99 or have salvation for men. 00:07:05.02\00:07:06.69 And, of course, number three, 00:07:06.72\00:07:08.06 to reveal His will and provide instruction 00:07:08.09\00:07:10.83 on how we can become citizens of heaven. 00:07:10.86\00:07:13.29 Isn't that the ultimate goal? 00:07:13.33\00:07:14.83 God wants us to be prepared for when He returns, 00:07:14.86\00:07:17.93 that we can be prepared to enter the kingdom of God 00:07:17.97\00:07:20.34 and make it our home. 00:07:20.37\00:07:21.70 So let's go back to this first one here 00:07:21.74\00:07:23.07 to confirm God's amazing work in history. 00:07:23.10\00:07:25.87 I think we see multiple examples 00:07:25.91\00:07:28.18 throughout Scripture 00:07:28.21\00:07:29.54 of the historicity of Scripture. 00:07:29.58\00:07:30.91 In other words, the Bible is a history book. 00:07:30.95\00:07:32.88 It's not just a history book, 00:07:32.91\00:07:34.25 but there are 00:07:34.28\00:07:35.62 some of the most sophisticated histories 00:07:35.65\00:07:36.99 in the world 00:07:37.02\00:07:38.35 contained right here in these pages. 00:07:38.39\00:07:39.72 I mean, for example, we have an entire... 00:07:39.75\00:07:41.59 I mean, how many other nations, 00:07:41.62\00:07:43.69 you know, like Israel can say 00:07:43.73\00:07:45.29 that almost their entire history 00:07:45.33\00:07:47.06 is recorded 00:07:47.10\00:07:48.43 in this one amazing powerful book of faith. 00:07:48.46\00:07:50.80 It's amazing. 00:07:50.83\00:07:52.17 Also, we consider the progressions of nations 00:07:52.20\00:07:54.50 through prophecy. 00:07:54.54\00:07:55.87 Of course, now we look back, it's past us, its history, 00:07:55.90\00:07:58.54 it proves that the Bible 00:07:58.57\00:07:59.91 is a great credible book of history 00:07:59.94\00:08:01.74 that we can trust. 00:08:01.78\00:08:03.11 I think of those progressions of the major empires 00:08:03.14\00:08:05.55 found in the Book of Daniel. 00:08:05.58\00:08:06.92 Not only is Daniel a prophetic book, 00:08:06.95\00:08:08.88 not only is Daniel a book of faith, 00:08:08.92\00:08:10.39 but Daniel is a book of history. 00:08:10.42\00:08:12.52 So we see that, you know, 00:08:12.55\00:08:14.32 making this book available to us, 00:08:14.36\00:08:15.89 making the Bible available to the masses 00:08:15.92\00:08:18.33 in their own languages. 00:08:18.36\00:08:19.69 We know that it confirms God's amazing work in history. 00:08:19.73\00:08:22.86 We also see that the accumulation 00:08:22.90\00:08:25.37 of prophetic events and times 00:08:25.40\00:08:27.47 that had been fulfilled and confirmed in history 00:08:27.50\00:08:29.67 that reveals the sovereignty of God. 00:08:29.70\00:08:31.97 We see the sovereignty of God on display through these 00:08:32.01\00:08:35.91 great historical aspects of Scripture. 00:08:35.94\00:08:38.68 And, of course, our second point, 00:08:38.71\00:08:40.45 for what reason did God make this Word available to us? 00:08:40.48\00:08:43.28 To reveal His plan for salvation for men. 00:08:43.32\00:08:47.92 We seek or we see this through the events, 00:08:47.96\00:08:51.13 symbols, and imagery throughout the Bible, 00:08:51.16\00:08:52.93 all the way through the Bible 00:08:52.96\00:08:54.30 and I think of the sanctuary theme. 00:08:54.33\00:08:56.13 As Seventh-day Adventists, 00:08:56.16\00:08:57.50 we believe in the sanctuary message, 00:08:57.53\00:08:59.40 the sanctuary message is found 00:08:59.43\00:09:00.77 in every single book of the Bible. 00:09:00.80\00:09:02.87 And that sanctuary was given to us to teach us, 00:09:02.90\00:09:05.67 to show us God's plan of salvation. 00:09:05.71\00:09:09.01 I think of texts like this 00:09:09.04\00:09:10.38 when you get to the New Testament, 00:09:10.41\00:09:11.75 John 1:29, 00:09:11.78\00:09:13.45 where John is there baptizing in the River Jordan, 00:09:13.48\00:09:15.85 all those people who are converting to the faith 00:09:15.88\00:09:18.55 who are repenting of their sins. 00:09:18.59\00:09:20.19 And he says, notice it says here, 00:09:20.22\00:09:21.79 "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, 00:09:21.82\00:09:24.19 and said, 'Behold! 00:09:24.23\00:09:25.56 The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!'" 00:09:25.59\00:09:29.36 We already see this record through the Old Testament, 00:09:29.40\00:09:32.73 we see it as a foreshadowing of the events 00:09:32.77\00:09:35.10 that are to take place, 00:09:35.14\00:09:36.47 and which we see the events 00:09:36.50\00:09:37.84 that ultimately transpire at Calvary. 00:09:37.87\00:09:39.64 God is putting His plan of salvation 00:09:39.67\00:09:41.54 on display. 00:09:41.58\00:09:42.91 For that purpose, 00:09:42.94\00:09:44.28 He has given us the Scripture, right? 00:09:44.31\00:09:46.11 Of course, John 3:16, 00:09:46.15\00:09:47.48 you can't leave this out 00:09:47.52\00:09:48.85 when you're talking about God's salvation plan. 00:09:48.88\00:09:50.35 John 3:16, "For God so loved the world 00:09:50.39\00:09:53.42 that He gave His only begotten Son, 00:09:53.46\00:09:54.92 that whosoever believes in Him 00:09:54.96\00:09:56.49 should not perish but have everlasting life." 00:09:56.52\00:10:00.16 What would we do if those texts didn't exist? 00:10:00.20\00:10:02.66 What would we do if we couldn't open this Bible 00:10:02.70\00:10:04.97 and read these powerful 00:10:05.00\00:10:06.33 life transforming words of faith. 00:10:06.37\00:10:09.17 And, of course, Romans 5:8, this is one of my favorites. 00:10:09.20\00:10:12.81 "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, 00:10:12.84\00:10:15.68 in that while we were still sinners, 00:10:15.71\00:10:18.21 Christ died for us." 00:10:18.25\00:10:19.95 That's the gospel, my friends. 00:10:19.98\00:10:22.02 That is God's plan of salvation. 00:10:22.05\00:10:23.95 And we see this on display all the way through Scripture. 00:10:23.99\00:10:27.22 And, of course, onto our third point 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.22 for why God would make this word 00:10:29.26\00:10:30.79 readily available for us. 00:10:30.83\00:10:32.16 Number three, 00:10:32.19\00:10:33.53 to reveal His will and provide instruction 00:10:33.56\00:10:35.80 on how we can become citizens of heaven. 00:10:35.83\00:10:38.57 He wants us to prepare for His kingdom. 00:10:38.60\00:10:41.20 Luke 9:23. 00:10:41.24\00:10:43.91 "Then He said to them all, this is Christ speaking, 00:10:43.94\00:10:46.07 'If anyone desires to come after Me, 00:10:46.11\00:10:48.14 let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, 00:10:48.18\00:10:52.38 and follow Me.'" 00:10:52.41\00:10:53.75 So, you know, many people obviously they read these texts 00:10:53.78\00:10:57.22 and, you know, they will juice the Bible down 00:10:57.25\00:11:00.16 to just a few texts that says, 00:11:00.19\00:11:01.52 you know, Jesus loves me, 00:11:01.56\00:11:02.89 I'm saved by grace through faith. 00:11:02.92\00:11:04.26 And, you know, all I got to do is believe 00:11:04.29\00:11:05.63 and go to heaven, 00:11:05.66\00:11:07.00 but praise God 00:11:07.03\00:11:08.36 that because God has made this Word 00:11:08.40\00:11:09.73 readily available. 00:11:09.76\00:11:11.10 We know that, yes, it is true that God loves us. 00:11:11.13\00:11:12.47 We are saved by grace through faith 00:11:12.50\00:11:14.44 and not of works, 00:11:14.47\00:11:15.80 you know, there's nothing that we can add, 00:11:15.84\00:11:17.17 but yet we also find detailed counsel 00:11:17.21\00:11:20.08 from the God of heaven, 00:11:20.11\00:11:21.44 inspired by the Holy Spirit to say, 00:11:21.48\00:11:22.88 "Hey, you know what? 00:11:22.91\00:11:24.25 I wanna sanctify you, I wanna prepare you, 00:11:24.28\00:11:25.91 I wanna shape you, 00:11:25.95\00:11:27.28 mold you into My character to prepare you for My kingdom 00:11:27.32\00:11:30.35 because one day, I will have you there." 00:11:30.39\00:11:32.85 Romans 12:1-2, 00:11:32.89\00:11:34.86 another great text that shows to us 00:11:34.89\00:11:36.86 God's will for us and the instruction 00:11:36.89\00:11:39.13 on how we can prepare to become citizens 00:11:39.16\00:11:41.56 of the Kingdom of God. 00:11:41.60\00:11:42.93 He says, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, 00:11:42.96\00:11:44.40 by the mercies of God, 00:11:44.43\00:11:45.77 that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, 00:11:45.80\00:11:48.40 holy, acceptable to God, 00:11:48.44\00:11:50.17 which is your reasonable service. 00:11:50.21\00:11:52.71 And do not be conformed to this world, 00:11:52.74\00:11:54.14 but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, 00:11:54.18\00:11:57.08 that you may prove what is that good 00:11:57.11\00:11:58.88 and acceptable and perfect will of God." 00:11:58.91\00:12:02.05 God wants to reveal His will to us. 00:12:02.08\00:12:04.89 And, of course, we know that it is His ultimate goal, 00:12:04.92\00:12:07.96 that where He is, 00:12:07.99\00:12:09.62 He wants us to be there too, right? 00:12:09.66\00:12:11.39 We have this Bible here in our language. 00:12:11.43\00:12:13.86 Praise God that it's in a language 00:12:13.90\00:12:15.23 I can understand 00:12:15.26\00:12:16.60 because this Bible tells me that God has went away, 00:12:16.63\00:12:20.14 but He encourages us, He inspires us, 00:12:20.17\00:12:22.24 He informs us that while I'm gone, 00:12:22.27\00:12:24.61 I'm gonna return and get you 00:12:24.64\00:12:25.97 and I'm gonna take you back to be with Me. 00:12:26.01\00:12:27.54 I think of John 14:1-3, 00:12:27.58\00:12:30.65 "Let not your heart be troubled, 00:12:30.68\00:12:32.71 you believe in God, believe also in Me. 00:12:32.75\00:12:34.85 In My Father's house are many mansions, 00:12:34.88\00:12:37.35 if it were not so, I would have told you. 00:12:37.39\00:12:40.09 I go to prepare a place for you. 00:12:40.12\00:12:41.86 And if I go and prepare a place for you, 00:12:41.89\00:12:43.53 I will come again and receive you to myself, 00:12:43.56\00:12:47.30 that where I am, there you may be also." 00:12:47.33\00:12:51.50 I praise God for the Word of God, 00:12:51.53\00:12:53.77 that God's plan, His will, 00:12:53.80\00:12:55.84 His historical works, His plan of salvation. 00:12:55.87\00:12:58.51 It's all on display here. 00:12:58.54\00:13:00.18 And, you know, we can trust it. 00:13:00.21\00:13:02.34 We can trust to know 00:13:02.38\00:13:03.71 that in faith if we receive that, 00:13:03.75\00:13:06.11 we will have eternal life. 00:13:06.15\00:13:07.75 The Bible is accumulated work of writers 00:13:07.78\00:13:09.98 spending more than 1500 years. 00:13:10.02\00:13:12.75 The fact that God has made this Word 00:13:12.79\00:13:14.46 so readily available to the world 00:13:14.49\00:13:16.86 shows the importance and sense of urgency, 00:13:16.89\00:13:19.86 that with each passing generation, 00:13:19.89\00:13:22.13 God amplifies His call for mankind 00:13:22.16\00:13:24.17 to surrender to the Word 00:13:24.20\00:13:26.00 and allow these words of life to transform their life. 00:13:26.03\00:13:30.81 You know, Israel was an essential prototype, 00:13:30.84\00:13:33.27 just kind of an example. 00:13:33.31\00:13:34.71 And we see that through Israel, 00:13:34.74\00:13:37.08 you know, we can see God's plan at work. 00:13:37.11\00:13:39.65 He diligently worked with them and a text that comes to mind 00:13:39.68\00:13:42.48 I wanna read in closing here. 00:13:42.52\00:13:43.85 Deuteronomy 32:46-47, "And he said to them, 00:13:43.89\00:13:47.46 'Set your hearts on all the words 00:13:47.49\00:13:49.19 which I testify among you today, 00:13:49.22\00:13:51.43 which you shall command your children 00:13:51.46\00:13:53.23 to be careful to observe all the words of this law. 00:13:53.26\00:13:56.33 For it is not a futile thing for you." 00:13:56.36\00:13:57.83 I love that. 00:13:57.87\00:13:59.20 "It's not a futile thing for you, 00:13:59.23\00:14:00.57 because it is your life, 00:14:00.60\00:14:01.94 and by this word you shall prolong your days 00:14:01.97\00:14:04.24 in the land which you cross over to Jordan 00:14:04.27\00:14:06.84 to possess.'" 00:14:06.88\00:14:08.21 So if we make these words in our heart and our mind, 00:14:08.24\00:14:11.71 it becomes our life, it becomes our goal. 00:14:11.75\00:14:14.65 We should teach them to our children. 00:14:14.68\00:14:16.02 And, pastor, I'm gonna pass it on to you. 00:14:16.05\00:14:17.52 We should continue to study the Word 00:14:17.55\00:14:19.49 and understand how to interpret it. 00:14:19.52\00:14:21.02 Thank you, Ryan. 00:14:21.06\00:14:22.39 Now we begin on Monday with Words and Meaning. 00:14:22.42\00:14:26.49 You know, in every language, I'm glad you pointed that out. 00:14:26.53\00:14:29.00 I didn't have any idea 00:14:29.03\00:14:30.73 how many languages 00:14:30.77\00:14:32.10 still did not have the Word of God 00:14:32.13\00:14:33.64 in their own language or in their own tongue, 00:14:33.67\00:14:36.17 but in every language, 00:14:36.20\00:14:37.54 there are words that are so rich and so deep. 00:14:37.57\00:14:40.18 We know as we reiterate, 00:14:40.21\00:14:41.58 the Bible is in Hebrew, Aramaic, very short portion, 00:14:41.61\00:14:45.31 and Greek. 00:14:45.35\00:14:46.68 And a lot of times, 00:14:46.72\00:14:48.05 if we don't understand 00:14:48.08\00:14:49.42 what it means in the original language, 00:14:49.45\00:14:51.52 it can be quite confusing 00:14:51.55\00:14:53.46 when you come to the English language. 00:14:53.49\00:14:56.49 So much of what we understand in the English language 00:14:56.52\00:14:59.49 requires our knowledge of the original tongue. 00:14:59.53\00:15:03.13 And when we get that, 00:15:03.16\00:15:04.73 then we are able to make sense out of certain Bible texts. 00:15:04.77\00:15:07.74 You know, there are certain Bible texts 00:15:07.77\00:15:09.10 that look repetitious. 00:15:09.14\00:15:10.47 When we say 00:15:10.51\00:15:11.84 why is He keep asking that same question? 00:15:11.87\00:15:13.21 Why would He keep doing that when in fact, 00:15:13.24\00:15:15.58 the original language is quite different? 00:15:15.61\00:15:17.68 What the Lord is asking one thing, 00:15:17.71\00:15:19.05 Peter is responding another way, 00:15:19.08\00:15:21.68 I'll use one of my classic ones. 00:15:21.72\00:15:23.05 Let's go to John Chapter 21. Let's start with this one. 00:15:23.08\00:15:27.59 This is an exercise 00:15:27.62\00:15:29.82 in understanding the original language. 00:15:29.86\00:15:33.06 What does the Lord asking Peter? 00:15:33.09\00:15:34.53 And how is Peter responding? 00:15:34.56\00:15:36.36 John 21:15. 00:15:36.40\00:15:38.83 And it says, the Bible says, 00:15:38.87\00:15:40.20 "So when they had eaten breakfast, 00:15:40.24\00:15:43.64 Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon, son of Jonah, 00:15:43.67\00:15:46.27 do you love Me more than these?' 00:15:46.31\00:15:49.14 He said to Him, 'Yes, Lord, You know, I love you.' 00:15:49.18\00:15:52.11 He said to him, 'Feed My lambs.'" 00:15:52.15\00:15:54.75 Now love, love. 00:15:54.78\00:15:56.42 In the English language the word is love, 00:15:56.45\00:15:58.32 but the Lord said to Peter in the original language, 00:15:58.35\00:16:01.19 "Peter, do you agape Me or agapao Me?" 00:16:01.22\00:16:05.23 Do you love me unconditionally? 00:16:05.26\00:16:06.59 And Peter said, "Lord, you know I phileo, You." 00:16:06.63\00:16:10.23 You know, I love you like a brother. 00:16:10.27\00:16:12.57 And the Lord says, second time in verse 16, 00:16:12.60\00:16:16.00 "He said to him again a second time, 00:16:16.04\00:16:18.31 'Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?' 00:16:18.34\00:16:20.78 'Do you agapao Me? 00:16:20.81\00:16:22.64 Do you love me unconditionally?' 00:16:22.68\00:16:25.08 And he said to Him, 'Yes, Lord, You know, I phileo you.' 00:16:25.11\00:16:30.59 He said him, 'Tend to My sheep.'" 00:16:30.62\00:16:32.62 Lord is trying to see if Peter's love 00:16:32.65\00:16:34.26 is yet at the point of unconditional. 00:16:34.29\00:16:36.19 He keeps saying, "Lord, I love You like a brother." 00:16:36.22\00:16:40.43 That's the original language 00:16:40.46\00:16:41.80 'cause people wonder why he keep doing that? 00:16:41.83\00:16:43.77 And he answered the question already. 00:16:43.80\00:16:45.37 Wanna make a point here. 00:16:45.40\00:16:46.74 The reason why I asked him three times 00:16:46.77\00:16:48.10 is because Peter denied him three times. 00:16:48.14\00:16:51.11 He wants to drive the point home, 00:16:51.14\00:16:52.87 and what do we say repetition is the best teacher. 00:16:52.91\00:16:57.05 That's right. Yes. 00:16:57.08\00:16:58.41 And the third time verse 17. 00:16:58.45\00:17:00.18 Now this is where it transitions. 00:17:00.22\00:17:02.35 "He said to him the third time, 00:17:02.38\00:17:04.65 'Simon, son of Jonah, do you phileo Me?'" 00:17:04.69\00:17:08.36 The Lord dropped off the agapao. 00:17:08.39\00:17:10.99 Okay. Do you phileo? Do you love me like a brother? 00:17:11.03\00:17:13.90 Peter was grieved 00:17:13.93\00:17:15.26 because He said to him the third time, 00:17:15.30\00:17:17.93 'Do you love Me?' 00:17:17.97\00:17:20.04 And he said, that's once again the phileo. 00:17:20.07\00:17:22.40 "He said to him, 'Lord, You know all things. 00:17:22.44\00:17:24.87 You know that I phileo you, 00:17:24.91\00:17:26.64 You know I love you like a brother.' 00:17:26.68\00:17:28.98 And then He said to him, 'Feed My sheep.'" 00:17:29.01\00:17:31.35 If we did not understand the original language, 00:17:31.38\00:17:33.55 and the application would say, this is an act of futility. 00:17:33.58\00:17:36.58 Why keep asking him the same question? 00:17:36.62\00:17:38.29 Like children, 00:17:38.32\00:17:39.65 you know, the repetition work children said, 00:17:39.69\00:17:42.52 "Why, daddy?" Why, daddy?" 00:17:42.56\00:17:45.46 And he keep going. Why? Why? 00:17:45.49\00:17:47.66 And it doesn't take a genius to ask a question, 00:17:47.70\00:17:51.87 but the answer is 00:17:51.90\00:17:53.23 when we understand the original language 00:17:53.27\00:17:54.70 just starts making sense. 00:17:54.74\00:17:56.07 I use another example. 00:17:56.10\00:17:58.17 The word hell, let's use the word hell. 00:17:58.21\00:18:01.31 Let's go to Deuteronomy 32:22. 00:18:01.34\00:18:05.28 There's only one English word hell. 00:18:05.31\00:18:07.98 This is so confusing because people 00:18:08.02\00:18:11.69 when they read what happened to Jesus 00:18:11.72\00:18:13.39 when He was buried, 00:18:13.42\00:18:15.42 they talked about the rich man and Lazarus. 00:18:15.46\00:18:18.33 They talk about... 00:18:18.36\00:18:19.69 And Peter where the Lord did not suffer him 00:18:19.73\00:18:21.50 to be left in hell. 00:18:21.53\00:18:24.33 So many distorted beliefs come to the surface. 00:18:24.37\00:18:28.10 So let's look at the first word hell 00:18:28.14\00:18:29.57 and this is in the Old Testament, 00:18:29.60\00:18:31.04 the word Sheol. 00:18:31.07\00:18:32.41 What's that word? Sheol. 00:18:32.44\00:18:33.78 Sheol, meaning the place of the dead, 00:18:33.81\00:18:36.44 the world of the dead. 00:18:36.48\00:18:37.81 Now hint, 00:18:37.85\00:18:40.42 in your community there's a place of the dead. 00:18:40.45\00:18:43.52 Come on, what's it call? 00:18:43.55\00:18:44.89 Cemetery. It's a cemetery. 00:18:44.92\00:18:46.65 It's not a local fitness club. 00:18:46.69\00:18:49.12 It's not a place where people are saying, 00:18:49.16\00:18:50.49 "Hey, John, 00:18:50.53\00:18:51.86 I know you finally came down and how you doing? 00:18:51.89\00:18:53.50 What was it like up there before you got here?" 00:18:53.53\00:18:56.00 There is no communicative place of the dead. 00:18:56.03\00:18:58.73 So we find here in Deuteronomy 32:22, 00:18:58.77\00:19:03.04 "For a fire is kindled in My anger, 00:19:03.07\00:19:05.84 and shall burn to the lowest hell. 00:19:05.87\00:19:08.98 It shall consume the earth with her increase, 00:19:09.01\00:19:12.91 and set on fire 00:19:12.95\00:19:14.28 the foundations of the mountains." 00:19:14.32\00:19:15.95 This lowest hell that has been talked about here 00:19:15.98\00:19:19.92 covers a plethora of words 00:19:19.95\00:19:21.72 that are included in the New Testament 00:19:21.76\00:19:24.49 that you find continually the Old Testament Sheol, 00:19:24.53\00:19:26.70 Sheol, Sheol, Sheol, Sheol. 00:19:26.73\00:19:28.96 But when we get to the New Testament, 00:19:29.00\00:19:30.87 we find that word hell 00:19:30.90\00:19:32.87 talked about in three additional words. 00:19:32.90\00:19:36.94 Let's go to one in, another one, Isaiah 38:18. 00:19:36.97\00:19:42.04 We find another one here about the word Sheol. 00:19:42.08\00:19:45.35 And then we're gonna transition to the New Testament. 00:19:45.38\00:19:47.58 Once again, understanding and by the way, 00:19:47.62\00:19:49.85 when the word Sheol is used in the Old Testament, 00:19:49.88\00:19:51.95 it's interchangeable to a place 00:19:51.99\00:19:54.02 where fires kindle as well as the grave, 00:19:54.06\00:19:56.62 it's an interchangeable word. 00:19:56.66\00:19:58.29 They don't use many words in the Hebrew 00:19:58.33\00:20:00.56 to simply because there was no distortion 00:20:00.60\00:20:02.80 about what happens when a person dies. 00:20:02.83\00:20:05.50 That came later on in Greek mythology 00:20:05.53\00:20:08.84 that came later on 00:20:08.87\00:20:10.34 in something called Neoplatonism, 00:20:10.37\00:20:14.44 this ideology that the soul continues to exist in a place 00:20:14.48\00:20:17.95 where you can communicate with it, 00:20:17.98\00:20:19.31 but that was not the case in the Old Testament times. 00:20:19.35\00:20:22.12 Isaiah 38:18. 00:20:22.15\00:20:23.95 And now I'm reading in the New King James Version, 00:20:23.99\00:20:26.15 if you in the King James Version, 00:20:26.19\00:20:27.52 it would say, 00:20:27.56\00:20:28.89 if I'm correct, Pastor Kenny you have the King James? 00:20:28.92\00:20:30.99 Now, if you read that verse for me, 00:20:31.03\00:20:32.36 Isaiah 38:18, do you have it? 00:20:32.39\00:20:34.16 I think so. Okay, read it for me there. 00:20:34.20\00:20:36.26 It says, "For the grave cannot praise thee, 00:20:36.30\00:20:38.43 death cannot celebrate thee, 00:20:38.47\00:20:40.90 they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth." 00:20:40.94\00:20:44.31 Okay, so the other word is for the grave, 00:20:44.34\00:20:47.54 but here in the New King James Version, 00:20:47.58\00:20:49.04 what I like about it, 00:20:49.08\00:20:50.41 is they actually put the actual word 00:20:50.45\00:20:52.61 in the Hebrew for Sheol. 00:20:52.65\00:20:55.38 So they'll say there's no confusion here, 00:20:55.42\00:20:58.45 but I'm gonna give you the actual word in Hebrew, 00:20:58.49\00:21:01.32 but it means what? 00:21:01.36\00:21:02.69 The grave, clearly pointed out. 00:21:02.72\00:21:04.29 So the Lord 00:21:04.33\00:21:05.66 is immediately removing the confusion. 00:21:05.69\00:21:08.30 Now let's go to the New Testament. 00:21:08.33\00:21:10.20 Luke 16:23. Luke 16:23. 00:21:10.23\00:21:14.70 And this is one of the ones 00:21:14.74\00:21:16.07 that really bring about a lot of confusion. 00:21:16.10\00:21:19.04 Luke 16:23 you have that, Jill? 00:21:19.07\00:21:21.91 I will in just a moment. Okay, great. 00:21:21.94\00:21:23.68 Luke 16:23? Luke 16:23. 00:21:23.71\00:21:26.78 "And being in torments in Hades, 00:21:26.82\00:21:29.02 he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, 00:21:29.05\00:21:31.65 and Lazarus in his bosom." 00:21:31.69\00:21:33.09 Okay, Pastor Kenny, 00:21:33.12\00:21:34.46 what word do you have in your Bible 00:21:34.49\00:21:35.82 and being in what? 00:21:35.86\00:21:37.19 Hell. Okay, right. 00:21:37.23\00:21:38.56 So there you go. 00:21:38.59\00:21:39.93 Hell in the King James, Hades in the New King James. 00:21:39.96\00:21:42.56 One of the reasons that the New King James exists 00:21:42.60\00:21:45.53 is not to change the meaning of the King James, 00:21:45.57\00:21:48.07 but once again we saw in the New King James Sheol, 00:21:48.10\00:21:51.04 and the King James grave, in the New King James Hades, 00:21:51.07\00:21:54.61 in the King James hell, 00:21:54.64\00:21:56.24 same word, but what the writers are doing, 00:21:56.28\00:21:58.55 what the translators are doing. 00:21:58.58\00:21:59.91 They're saying, 00:21:59.95\00:22:01.28 "Yeah, we wanna try to remove the confusion 00:22:01.32\00:22:02.65 because so many teachings exist today 00:22:02.68\00:22:05.15 that people just don't understand 00:22:05.19\00:22:06.55 in the original language. 00:22:06.59\00:22:08.12 And we find people going to hell when they die, 00:22:08.16\00:22:10.89 that's not what the Bible teaches. 00:22:10.93\00:22:12.26 Burning in hell eternally, 00:22:12.29\00:22:13.63 that's not what the Bible teaches." 00:22:13.66\00:22:15.00 Few more examples. Let's go now to Matthew 10:28. 00:22:15.03\00:22:18.13 Matthew 10:28. 00:22:18.17\00:22:19.50 So that's Hades, 00:22:19.53\00:22:20.87 but now we're gonna look at the other word Gehenna. 00:22:20.90\00:22:23.30 Gehenna. Matthew 10:28. 00:22:23.34\00:22:26.44 That means in the Greek, 00:22:26.47\00:22:27.88 the fire that destroys us completely. 00:22:27.91\00:22:31.21 Matthew 1028. 00:22:31.25\00:22:32.61 Pastor Dinzey, do you have that? 00:22:32.65\00:22:33.98 What translation do you have? 00:22:34.02\00:22:35.35 This is a New King. Okay, read it for us. 00:22:35.38\00:22:37.79 "And do not fear those who kill the body 00:22:37.82\00:22:40.72 but cannot kill the soul. 00:22:40.76\00:22:42.62 But rather fear Him who is able to destroy 00:22:42.66\00:22:45.69 both soul and body in hell." 00:22:45.73\00:22:47.93 Now amazingly enough, when you read that passage, 00:22:47.96\00:22:49.76 a lot of people say 00:22:49.80\00:22:51.13 see there the soul can't be destroyed. 00:22:51.17\00:22:53.03 Keep reading. 00:22:53.07\00:22:54.47 If you keep reading, the Bible tells you clearly 00:22:54.50\00:22:56.37 in Gehenna that is the lake of fire, 00:22:56.40\00:22:59.54 the fire that burns at the end. 00:22:59.57\00:23:01.18 Here's the point. 00:23:01.21\00:23:02.54 We may lose our lives sadly enough, 00:23:02.58\00:23:04.51 some people lose it in a fiery crash 00:23:04.55\00:23:06.48 or in a fire in their apartment buildings. 00:23:06.51\00:23:08.88 And, you know, unfortunately they are consumed in the fire, 00:23:08.92\00:23:12.42 but they can come forth in the resurrection, 00:23:12.45\00:23:15.19 but the Lord is in essence 00:23:15.22\00:23:16.56 saying when the second death occurs, 00:23:16.59\00:23:19.43 there is no coming back. 00:23:19.46\00:23:21.60 After that, that is the lake that burns with fire. 00:23:21.63\00:23:24.87 That's the second death. 00:23:24.90\00:23:26.80 One more. Let's go to 2 Peter 2:4. 00:23:26.84\00:23:29.60 We've covered Sheol, Hades, Gehenna. 00:23:29.64\00:23:32.21 Now let's see one word in the Greek 00:23:32.24\00:23:33.88 that only appears one time in the Bible. 00:23:33.91\00:23:36.64 Could you get that, Ryan? 00:23:36.68\00:23:38.01 I'm there, 2 Peter? 2 Peter 2:4. 00:23:38.05\00:23:40.15 2 Peter 2:4 says, 00:23:40.18\00:23:42.22 "For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, 00:23:42.25\00:23:44.55 but cast them down to hell 00:23:44.59\00:23:46.62 and delivered them into the chains of darkness, 00:23:46.65\00:23:49.46 to be reserved for judgment." 00:23:49.49\00:23:51.29 This is referred to as the place where 00:23:51.33\00:23:54.10 and this is not a place particularly, 00:23:54.13\00:23:55.93 but this is talking about the restraint 00:23:55.96\00:23:58.27 that God puts on the evil angels. 00:23:58.30\00:24:00.14 In other words, He holds them as called chains of darkness. 00:24:00.17\00:24:04.64 They are not allowed to do their bidding. 00:24:04.67\00:24:06.78 And that's the only part Tartarus. 00:24:06.81\00:24:08.78 That's the only time in the Bible 00:24:08.81\00:24:10.58 that that word is used in the Greek. 00:24:10.61\00:24:12.55 So you see, Hades, Gehenna, Tartarus, and Sheol. 00:24:12.58\00:24:16.52 It all makes sense 00:24:16.55\00:24:17.89 when the original language is understood. 00:24:17.92\00:24:20.46 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:24:20.49\00:24:21.82 You know, Pastor, everything you were just saying 00:24:21.86\00:24:23.19 reminds me of that text, 00:24:23.22\00:24:24.73 2 Timothy 2:15 where Paul, 00:24:24.76\00:24:27.06 you know, reminds us to study to, "Show ourselves approved, 00:24:27.10\00:24:29.26 a workman who need not to be ashamed, 00:24:29.30\00:24:31.10 rightly dividing the word of truth." 00:24:31.13\00:24:32.47 And sometimes we got to dig a little deeper 00:24:32.50\00:24:34.20 to rightly divide the word of truth. 00:24:34.24\00:24:35.70 We're gonna take a short break 00:24:35.74\00:24:37.07 and we'll see you back here in just a moment. 00:24:37.11\00:24:39.17 Ever wish you could watch 00:24:44.31\00:24:45.65 a 3ABN Sabbath School Panel again, 00:24:45.68\00:24:47.82 or share it on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter? 00:24:47.85\00:24:50.99 Well, you can by visiting 3abnsabbathschoolpanel.com. 00:24:51.02\00:24:55.99 A clean design makes it easy 00:24:56.02\00:24:58.43 to find the program you're looking for. 00:24:58.46\00:25:00.56 There are also links to the Adult Bible Study Guide 00:25:00.60\00:25:04.00 so you can follow along. 00:25:04.03\00:25:05.77 Sharing is easy. 00:25:05.80\00:25:07.14 Just click share 00:25:07.17\00:25:08.50 and choose your favorite social media. 00:25:08.54\00:25:10.41 Share a link, save a life for eternity. 00:25:10.44\00:25:14.44 Welcome back to 3ABN Sabbath School Panel. 00:25:21.12\00:25:23.28 We're gonna continue on to Tuesday's lesson 00:25:23.32\00:25:25.69 with Pastor John Dinzey. 00:25:25.72\00:25:27.29 Thank you very much. 00:25:27.32\00:25:28.66 And we continue with the title of Tuesday's lesson Repetition, 00:25:28.69\00:25:32.63 Word Patterns, and Meaning. 00:25:32.66\00:25:35.63 So when you look, consider the Old Testament, 00:25:35.66\00:25:39.70 in the Hebrew, 00:25:39.73\00:25:41.10 there were different ways 00:25:41.14\00:25:42.47 to express emphasis and meaning. 00:25:42.50\00:25:45.47 And this was done sometimes with repetition. 00:25:45.51\00:25:49.64 So let's look into Genesis 1:26-27. 00:25:49.68\00:25:54.08 Pastor Lomacang, would you help us with that? 00:25:54.12\00:25:55.45 Sure. 00:25:55.48\00:25:56.82 It says, "Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, 00:25:56.85\00:25:59.65 according to Our likeness, 00:25:59.69\00:26:01.52 let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, 00:26:01.56\00:26:03.49 over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, 00:26:03.53\00:26:06.56 over all the earth 00:26:06.59\00:26:07.93 and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' 00:26:07.96\00:26:11.00 So God created man in His own image, 00:26:11.03\00:26:14.84 in the image of God He created him, 00:26:14.87\00:26:18.11 male and female He created them." 00:26:18.14\00:26:21.94 Wonderful, amen. Praise the Lord. 00:26:21.98\00:26:24.25 So here before I go to the part where you have repetition, 00:26:24.28\00:26:27.42 I like to say that we human beings 00:26:27.45\00:26:30.19 have a glorious beginning, a marvelous beginning, 00:26:30.22\00:26:33.76 created by God, not only created by God, 00:26:33.79\00:26:36.56 but created in His image. 00:26:36.59\00:26:39.33 And this is wonderful to consider 00:26:39.36\00:26:40.76 when they are trying to teach people 00:26:40.80\00:26:43.33 that we came from these lower forms of life, 00:26:43.37\00:26:46.37 we have a glorious beginning made in the image of God. 00:26:46.40\00:26:49.77 Now notice that when you get to verse 27, 00:26:49.80\00:26:52.71 there is an emphasis placed on God as our Creator. 00:26:52.74\00:26:57.08 Notice, "So God created man in His image." 00:26:57.11\00:27:00.05 One. 00:27:00.08\00:27:01.42 "In the image of God He created him, 00:27:01.45\00:27:05.49 male and female He created them." 00:27:05.52\00:27:08.22 Three times the word created 00:27:08.26\00:27:10.29 is mentioned here to bring emphasis 00:27:10.33\00:27:12.73 that God is our Creator. 00:27:12.76\00:27:15.50 A marvelous, marvelous concept that you find here 00:27:15.53\00:27:19.33 in the very first Book of the Bible. 00:27:19.37\00:27:22.27 Moving on, we see that in Isaiah Chapter 6, 00:27:22.30\00:27:27.48 we're gonna go to read verse 1, 2, and 3. 00:27:27.51\00:27:30.95 Now in Isaiah Chapter 6, 00:27:30.98\00:27:32.61 we find a repetition that is again, marvelous. 00:27:32.65\00:27:38.05 "In the year that King Uzziah died, 00:27:38.09\00:27:41.52 I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, 00:27:41.56\00:27:43.19 high and lifted up, 00:27:43.22\00:27:44.96 and the train of His robe filled the temple. 00:27:44.99\00:27:48.50 Above it stood seraphim, 00:27:48.53\00:27:50.73 each one had six wings with two he covered his face, 00:27:50.77\00:27:54.50 with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 00:27:54.54\00:27:57.87 And one cried to another 00:27:57.91\00:28:00.38 and said, 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, 00:28:00.41\00:28:06.25 the whole earth is full of His glory!'" 00:28:06.28\00:28:11.15 Beautiful expression. 00:28:11.19\00:28:13.22 Here, 00:28:13.25\00:28:14.59 the emphasis is on the holiness and how awesome God is. 00:28:14.62\00:28:19.16 In fact, His glory fills the earth. 00:28:19.19\00:28:22.96 Repetition, 00:28:23.00\00:28:24.33 emphasis to bring out how Holy God is. 00:28:24.37\00:28:29.44 But when you consider God's holiness, 00:28:29.47\00:28:33.78 and the reaction of Isaiah, let's read verse 4 and 5, 00:28:33.81\00:28:39.41 "And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him 00:28:39.45\00:28:43.08 who cried out, 00:28:43.12\00:28:44.45 and the house was filled with smoke. 00:28:44.49\00:28:46.59 So I said, 'Woe is me, for I am undone! 00:28:46.62\00:28:50.66 Because I am a man of unclean lips, 00:28:50.69\00:28:53.60 and I dwell 00:28:53.63\00:28:54.96 in the midst of people of unclean lips, 00:28:55.00\00:28:57.00 for my eyes have seen the King, 00:28:57.03\00:28:59.73 the Lord of Hosts.'" 00:28:59.77\00:29:01.94 At the glorious beauty and majesty of God, 00:29:01.97\00:29:06.98 He says, "I am a man of unclean lips." 00:29:07.01\00:29:10.28 Who on the earth could possibly say, 00:29:10.31\00:29:13.78 unclean when you consider the holiness of God, 00:29:13.82\00:29:17.55 and I have to add 00:29:17.59\00:29:18.92 that somehow in this glorious manifestation. 00:29:18.95\00:29:22.16 Still, His glory was veiled 00:29:22.19\00:29:24.19 so that human beings 00:29:24.23\00:29:25.76 could contain and live through that experience, 00:29:25.79\00:29:29.80 so majestic and so holy. 00:29:29.83\00:29:31.90 So but here, we see emphasis in repetition. 00:29:31.93\00:29:37.24 It's interesting that this brings to mind 00:29:37.27\00:29:41.01 a scripture that is very well-known, 00:29:41.04\00:29:43.04 and that is found in Romans 3:23. 00:29:43.08\00:29:46.58 And in Romans 3:23, we have, 00:29:46.61\00:29:49.35 "For all have sinned 00:29:49.38\00:29:50.85 and fall short of the glory of God." 00:29:50.89\00:29:54.32 And so when we come before a mighty holy God, 00:29:54.36\00:29:57.06 we have to understand that we are people 00:29:57.09\00:29:59.59 that have sinned 00:29:59.63\00:30:00.96 and need to be cleansed by the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:30:01.00\00:30:04.33 In Daniel Chapter 3, 00:30:04.37\00:30:05.70 you have another set of repetitions. 00:30:05.73\00:30:07.77 So we're not gonna go through all of the verses 00:30:07.80\00:30:09.57 because you find, in Daniel 3:1-2, 00:30:09.60\00:30:13.27 3, 5, 7, 12,14, 15, and 18, 00:30:13.31\00:30:16.75 the image which Nebuchadnezzar set up in different ways 00:30:16.78\00:30:20.98 this is mentioned 00:30:21.02\00:30:22.35 the emphasis on being that he wanted to place himself 00:30:22.38\00:30:26.49 to be worshipped to be as God 00:30:26.52\00:30:28.06 because, you know, the image he set up 00:30:28.09\00:30:29.46 was made out of gold, 00:30:29.49\00:30:31.19 and that represented, the head represented Babylon, 00:30:31.23\00:30:34.30 but he wanted an image, the whole image does, 00:30:34.33\00:30:36.30 oh, my kingdom is gonna last forever, 00:30:36.33\00:30:38.00 but no, the kingdom is gonna last forever 00:30:38.03\00:30:40.40 is God's kingdom. 00:30:40.44\00:30:41.97 Praise the Lord for that. 00:30:42.00\00:30:43.34 So as we continue, 00:30:43.37\00:30:44.71 I would like to show you 00:30:44.74\00:30:46.07 something interesting about a word. 00:30:46.11\00:30:50.61 And when you think of the word most holy, 00:30:50.65\00:30:53.88 we read it in English as most holy but in the Hebrews 00:30:53.92\00:30:57.49 actually Kodesh, Kodesh. 00:30:57.52\00:30:59.79 And one example is found in Exodus 26:33. 00:30:59.82\00:31:05.63 Exodus 26:33. 00:31:05.66\00:31:08.03 And either maybe Sister Jill can find that. 00:31:08.06\00:31:11.37 Okay, Exodus 26:33. 00:31:11.40\00:31:14.17 Exodus 26:33, 00:31:14.20\00:31:15.87 "And you shall hang the veil from the clasps. 00:31:15.90\00:31:18.34 Then you shall bring the ark of the Testimony in there, 00:31:18.37\00:31:21.24 behind the veil. 00:31:21.28\00:31:22.61 The veil shall be a divider for you 00:31:22.64\00:31:24.01 between the holy place and the Most Holy." 00:31:24.05\00:31:26.85 Thank you. Could you read 34 as well? 00:31:26.88\00:31:29.48 "You shall put the mercy seat upon the ark of the Testimony 00:31:29.52\00:31:32.59 in the Most Holy." 00:31:32.62\00:31:34.06 Okay, so here, when you read the word, 00:31:34.09\00:31:36.93 Most Holy, it's actually saying in the Most Holy, Holy, 00:31:36.96\00:31:43.26 and that's Kodesh Kodesh is the Hebrew word is here. 00:31:43.30\00:31:47.37 The same thing is found in Daniel 9:24. 00:31:47.40\00:31:51.87 Daniel 9:24. 00:31:51.91\00:31:54.28 And again, maybe, Pastor Ryan, 00:31:54.31\00:31:56.64 could help us with Daniel 9:24. 00:31:56.68\00:31:58.71 Absolutely, Daniel 9:24, says, 00:31:58.75\00:32:02.48 "Seventy weeks are determined for your people 00:32:02.52\00:32:04.55 and for your holy city, 00:32:04.59\00:32:06.22 to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, 00:32:06.25\00:32:09.56 to make reconciliation for iniquity, 00:32:09.59\00:32:11.79 to bring in everlasting righteousness, 00:32:11.83\00:32:14.06 to seal up vision and prophecy, 00:32:14.10\00:32:16.06 and to anoint the Most Holy." 00:32:16.10\00:32:17.77 Thank you. 00:32:17.80\00:32:19.13 Again, here we have Most Holy as holy, holy, 00:32:19.17\00:32:23.04 is saying 00:32:23.07\00:32:24.41 that this is the holiest of all. 00:32:24.44\00:32:27.21 And so this is a use of repetition 00:32:27.24\00:32:29.74 to express the highest quality that could possibly exist. 00:32:29.78\00:32:34.22 When you get to the New Testament, 00:32:34.25\00:32:36.35 we do have a few repetitions, not many. 00:32:36.38\00:32:39.45 And we are going to... 00:32:39.49\00:32:40.82 I'm gonna read from Matthew 23:37. 00:32:40.86\00:32:44.96 Matthew 23:37 says, Jesus speaking, 00:32:44.99\00:32:48.53 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, 00:32:48.56\00:32:51.93 the one who kills the prophets 00:32:51.97\00:32:53.50 and stones those who are sent to her! 00:32:53.54\00:32:56.20 How often I wanted to gather your children together, 00:32:56.24\00:32:59.64 as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, 00:32:59.67\00:33:02.84 but you were not willing!" 00:33:02.88\00:33:05.28 And the King James says, but you would not. 00:33:05.31\00:33:07.25 Here Jesus repeats the word Jerusalem twice 00:33:07.28\00:33:09.72 for emphasis on the lamenting, 00:33:09.75\00:33:14.16 taking this, 00:33:14.19\00:33:15.56 that they decided to do all these things. 00:33:15.59\00:33:18.23 An opportunity after opportunity was given, 00:33:18.26\00:33:21.20 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem. It's like why, why, why? 00:33:21.23\00:33:25.20 And, you know, we express ourselves that way 00:33:25.23\00:33:27.24 as we repeat things 00:33:27.27\00:33:28.60 sometimes for emphasis in our everyday language. 00:33:28.64\00:33:31.64 And so we have here a repetition. 00:33:31.67\00:33:33.81 I want to go to one more, I think we have time, 00:33:33.84\00:33:37.41 and that is in Revelation 4:8. 00:33:37.45\00:33:42.88 Revelation 4:8. 00:33:42.92\00:33:45.62 And here are the words, "The four living creatures, 00:33:45.65\00:33:50.16 each having six wings, 00:33:50.19\00:33:52.43 were full of eyes around and within. 00:33:52.46\00:33:55.03 And they do not rest day or night, saying, 00:33:55.06\00:33:58.20 'Holy, holy holy, Lord God Almighty, 00:33:58.23\00:34:03.97 who was and is to come!'" 00:34:04.01\00:34:06.74 So we see here repetition 00:34:06.78\00:34:09.34 that expresses emphasis on how Holy God is. 00:34:09.38\00:34:15.38 And so we see this type of repetition 00:34:15.42\00:34:19.02 to bring emphasis 00:34:19.05\00:34:20.39 to help us understand more about the holiness of God. 00:34:20.42\00:34:27.03 I think we have time for one more. 00:34:27.06\00:34:28.40 All right. 00:34:28.43\00:34:29.76 So I think I'll go to Hebrews 9:3. 00:34:29.80\00:34:33.00 In Hebrews 9:3, 00:34:33.03\00:34:36.24 we have another interesting repetition. 00:34:36.27\00:34:40.11 Hebrews 9:3 says, 00:34:40.14\00:34:42.54 "And behind the second veil, 00:34:42.58\00:34:45.91 the part of the tabernacle 00:34:45.95\00:34:47.28 which is called the Holiest of All." 00:34:47.32\00:34:50.75 And this is a word that is used hagion, hagion 00:34:50.79\00:34:55.32 and it says holiest of all. 00:34:55.36\00:34:57.73 The expression is bringing here, 00:34:57.76\00:35:01.80 I mean, really in our language 00:35:01.83\00:35:04.03 we cannot even describe when God is trying to say 00:35:04.07\00:35:06.07 the holiest of all. 00:35:06.10\00:35:08.50 So the Bible uses these different methods 00:35:08.54\00:35:11.31 to really help us understand things 00:35:11.34\00:35:14.31 about the holiness of God, 00:35:14.34\00:35:16.04 or the impact of what God is trying to say. 00:35:16.08\00:35:19.05 There are several repetitions 00:35:19.08\00:35:20.42 we didn't get to because of lack of time, 00:35:20.45\00:35:22.28 but we see that the Bible employs these 00:35:22.32\00:35:24.42 to help us in our understanding of the scriptures. 00:35:24.45\00:35:27.36 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:35:27.39\00:35:28.72 Good job. Absolutely. 00:35:28.76\00:35:30.09 You know those things we need to understand. 00:35:30.13\00:35:32.13 Praise God for that. 00:35:32.16\00:35:33.50 I have Wednesday's lesson, 00:35:33.53\00:35:34.86 it's called Texts and Contexts. 00:35:34.90\00:35:37.30 And so, you know, 00:35:37.33\00:35:38.73 we need to dig into this I found a passage 00:35:38.77\00:35:41.07 in Christ's Object Lessons, page 111. 00:35:41.10\00:35:43.24 Just a one line, I thought was very interesting. 00:35:43.27\00:35:45.61 It says, "Our salvation depends on a knowledge 00:35:45.64\00:35:49.28 of the truth contained in Scripture." 00:35:49.31\00:35:54.02 Isn't that interesting? Our salvation does what? 00:35:54.05\00:35:57.09 It depends on our knowledge of the truth 00:35:57.12\00:36:00.29 contained in Scripture. 00:36:00.32\00:36:01.66 So that's why we're going over these things, is it not? 00:36:01.69\00:36:03.89 So that we can get the knowledge 00:36:03.93\00:36:05.26 and we come up with what is truth. 00:36:05.29\00:36:07.30 First, you look at the meaning. 00:36:07.33\00:36:08.66 What is the meaning of a context 00:36:08.70\00:36:10.83 when you think about context here? 00:36:10.87\00:36:12.37 And I looked it up 00:36:12.40\00:36:13.74 and it's from Webster dictionary, 00:36:13.77\00:36:15.34 we'll look at it a couple different ways here 00:36:15.37\00:36:16.71 in a moment. 00:36:16.74\00:36:18.07 It says, "Parts of a sentence, paragraph, etcetera," 00:36:18.11\00:36:22.28 that notice this, 00:36:22.31\00:36:23.65 "that occurred just before 00:36:23.68\00:36:25.25 or after a specified word or passage, 00:36:25.28\00:36:28.88 and determined to its exact meaning." 00:36:28.92\00:36:33.15 Might seem a little bit complicated. 00:36:33.19\00:36:34.52 Hopefully, it'll be clear, 00:36:34.56\00:36:35.89 as we go along with this right here. 00:36:35.92\00:36:37.39 That's a Webster dictionary. 00:36:37.43\00:36:38.76 So that's context of something. 00:36:38.79\00:36:40.46 And then, I mean, how often have we heard that. 00:36:40.50\00:36:43.50 Make sure it's in context. 00:36:43.53\00:36:45.03 That's very, very important, isn't it? 00:36:45.07\00:36:46.74 So we just talked about here, 00:36:46.77\00:36:48.10 the knowledge of the truth contained in Scripture, 00:36:48.14\00:36:49.77 our salvation depends upon it. 00:36:49.80\00:36:51.34 So that's why we're spending this time on it. 00:36:51.37\00:36:53.94 Contexts and Texts. 00:36:53.98\00:36:55.31 Text says, 00:36:55.34\00:36:56.68 it's the actual or original words 00:36:56.71\00:36:58.58 of the author. 00:36:58.61\00:37:00.25 The principle matter on a printed page. 00:37:00.28\00:37:04.29 I mean, hopefully that comes together. 00:37:04.32\00:37:05.85 Now we put them in on it, 00:37:05.89\00:37:07.22 you know, they can be put in on a wider sense, 00:37:07.26\00:37:10.33 you know, the meaning can be expanded as we go along, 00:37:10.36\00:37:12.79 we'll see that. 00:37:12.83\00:37:14.16 So before reaching a conclusion, 00:37:14.20\00:37:15.53 what's maybe something we should do? 00:37:15.56\00:37:17.77 We should be very careful to weigh out the evidence 00:37:17.80\00:37:20.54 to make sure 00:37:20.57\00:37:21.90 that it harmonizes line upon line, 00:37:21.94\00:37:23.61 precept upon precept. 00:37:23.64\00:37:25.34 3 Testimonies 105 says this, 00:37:25.37\00:37:27.28 "We must look carefully at the evidence on every side 00:37:27.31\00:37:31.08 and not to be swayed by the influence of," what? 00:37:31.11\00:37:33.92 "Of others." 00:37:33.95\00:37:35.28 Sometime we're swayed by that. 00:37:35.32\00:37:36.85 "By the surroundings, 00:37:36.89\00:37:38.25 to form conclusions without intelligent, 00:37:38.29\00:37:41.02 thorough knowledge." 00:37:41.06\00:37:42.39 So this is important. 00:37:42.42\00:37:43.76 I believe this is we're talking life and death issue here. 00:37:43.79\00:37:45.96 So Wednesday's lesson, it talks about... 00:37:45.99\00:37:48.06 Again, how many times if you heard it, 00:37:48.10\00:37:50.03 you know, that was taken out of context. 00:37:50.07\00:37:52.40 We've heard that a lot of times. 00:37:52.43\00:37:53.77 That was taken out of context. Well, yes. 00:37:53.80\00:37:56.04 Or let's make sure that word fits. 00:37:56.07\00:37:58.71 You know, make sure that word fits 00:37:58.74\00:38:00.08 in the context of the sentence. 00:38:00.11\00:38:03.55 You know, our lesson starts 00:38:03.58\00:38:04.91 with two very important points here in trying to... 00:38:04.95\00:38:08.22 This is very important, in trying to arrive at truth. 00:38:08.25\00:38:11.75 I tried to look at the lesson and say now 00:38:11.79\00:38:13.22 what is this saying to me, 00:38:13.25\00:38:15.32 we want to be able to arrive at the truth, 00:38:15.36\00:38:19.03 as God has written in His Word for us. 00:38:19.06\00:38:22.06 To simplify where number one is words, 00:38:22.10\00:38:24.03 we have to look at the words. 00:38:24.07\00:38:25.40 Number two, 00:38:25.43\00:38:26.77 we must look at the context of it. 00:38:26.80\00:38:28.47 Words in Scripture always occur in a context, 00:38:28.50\00:38:33.81 they can't stand by themselves or can't stand alone. 00:38:33.84\00:38:37.05 So a word has its immediate context 00:38:37.08\00:38:41.02 within a sentence, then notice this, I like this. 00:38:41.05\00:38:44.65 There can be a wider, 00:38:44.69\00:38:46.02 there can be an expansion of this, 00:38:46.05\00:38:47.99 you know, this section, it can be in different chapter. 00:38:48.02\00:38:51.36 You know, it might be saying somebody explained 00:38:51.39\00:38:53.03 what it means this and the explanation to wider, 00:38:53.06\00:38:56.46 we go to another chapter and maybe some other chapters 00:38:56.50\00:38:58.83 that we can look at. 00:38:58.87\00:39:00.20 So what's the point? 00:39:00.24\00:39:01.57 The point is we must understand 00:39:01.60\00:39:02.94 the context of words 00:39:02.97\00:39:04.74 and of sentences in order not to arrive 00:39:04.77\00:39:08.54 at the wrong conclusion. 00:39:08.58\00:39:10.45 You know, we want to arrive at the truth, don't we? 00:39:10.48\00:39:12.85 I mean, that's the whole thing here. 00:39:12.88\00:39:15.38 Three questions. 00:39:15.42\00:39:16.75 Let's look at three questions right quick 00:39:16.79\00:39:18.12 in case we're still a little bit confused 00:39:18.15\00:39:19.59 on text and context. 00:39:19.62\00:39:21.09 Number three, what is the context of a text? 00:39:21.12\00:39:25.19 Almost double talk. 00:39:25.23\00:39:26.56 What is the context of the text? 00:39:26.59\00:39:29.06 It says here, the text refers to words, 00:39:29.10\00:39:32.30 which are written, 00:39:32.33\00:39:34.17 while context 00:39:34.20\00:39:35.54 is the surroundings of the text. 00:39:35.57\00:39:39.01 The second question, what is an example of context? 00:39:39.04\00:39:43.51 The context 00:39:43.55\00:39:44.88 is some combination of people's, notice this, 00:39:44.91\00:39:47.75 underlying reasons some other thoughts 00:39:47.78\00:39:50.45 and social culture force acting on them. 00:39:50.49\00:39:55.16 Three, third question, 00:39:55.19\00:39:56.52 explain the difference between context and text? 00:39:56.56\00:39:59.93 Now we can really right get confused on, 00:39:59.96\00:40:01.53 notice this. 00:40:01.56\00:40:03.87 The text then is the main story, 00:40:03.90\00:40:07.67 the primary event, 00:40:07.70\00:40:09.70 the immediate thing that is happening, 00:40:09.74\00:40:12.64 you know, and context 00:40:12.67\00:40:14.14 is all the stuff in the background 00:40:14.18\00:40:16.81 that surrounds that without being part 00:40:16.85\00:40:19.35 of that main action there. 00:40:19.38\00:40:21.88 So our lesson wants us to compare 00:40:21.92\00:40:23.55 and we wanna do this. 00:40:23.59\00:40:24.92 Compare, 00:40:24.95\00:40:26.29 we've been going back to Genesis 1:26, 27, 28 00:40:26.32\00:40:31.23 but it wants us to compare 00:40:31.26\00:40:32.59 and I wanna stay with the lesson 00:40:32.63\00:40:33.96 the best we can here. 00:40:34.00\00:40:35.40 Our lesson wants us to compare Genesis 1:27 with Genesis 2 00:40:35.43\00:40:40.60 so get those down, write them down, verse 7. 00:40:40.64\00:40:43.44 Now notice, 00:40:43.47\00:40:44.81 and then we can go 'cause we talked about it 00:40:44.84\00:40:47.04 can expand to chapter and chapters. 00:40:47.08\00:40:49.74 So then we'll compare if we have time, 00:40:49.78\00:40:51.88 Genesis 2:15-23. 00:40:51.91\00:40:55.18 That's the larger picture. 00:40:55.22\00:40:56.99 Genesis 1:27, the Bible said we read, 00:40:57.02\00:40:59.69 "So God created," what? 00:40:59.72\00:41:01.46 "Man in His own image, 00:41:01.49\00:41:03.06 in the image of God created He him, 00:41:03.09\00:41:06.13 and that was male and female." 00:41:06.16\00:41:08.86 Notice this of the Genesis 2:7, 00:41:08.90\00:41:10.97 "And the Lord God formed man out of the dust of the ground, 00:41:11.00\00:41:15.70 and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, 00:41:15.74\00:41:19.47 and man then became," what? 00:41:19.51\00:41:20.84 "A living soul." 00:41:20.88\00:41:22.21 We'll use that so often notice that. 00:41:22.24\00:41:23.88 So we see and we go back 00:41:23.91\00:41:25.31 and we look there in Genesis 1:27. 00:41:25.35\00:41:28.05 The term bara there 00:41:28.08\00:41:30.09 is the Hebrew word is not and know what does it mean? 00:41:30.12\00:41:33.72 It refers to the Creator. 00:41:33.76\00:41:36.36 And so that word can only refer to God, 00:41:36.39\00:41:38.43 isn't that right? 00:41:38.46\00:41:39.79 God is the only creator that we know 00:41:39.83\00:41:41.16 of heaven and earth. 00:41:41.20\00:41:42.53 So this word here is an isolated word here, 00:41:42.56\00:41:44.23 but it's a good word, 00:41:44.27\00:41:45.60 but it's used three times to indicate 00:41:45.63\00:41:48.20 the main position on the creation of man. 00:41:48.24\00:41:52.77 Then man, notice this, 00:41:52.81\00:41:54.14 is defined within the context here 00:41:54.18\00:41:57.15 of the verse. 00:41:57.18\00:41:58.51 It says male and female, 00:41:58.55\00:42:01.32 Hebrew term, let's say for say for Adam, 00:42:01.35\00:42:03.99 in this passage refers to in this passage, just mankind. 00:42:04.02\00:42:07.79 Every time you read, so was just mankind. 00:42:07.82\00:42:09.79 But if we continue on and look in Genesis 2:7, 00:42:09.82\00:42:12.46 we see the same term, 00:42:12.49\00:42:14.50 Adam is used in the forming of Adam where? 00:42:14.53\00:42:18.80 Out of the dust. 00:42:18.83\00:42:21.20 Here, only Adam is referred to. 00:42:21.24\00:42:23.51 Why? 00:42:23.54\00:42:24.87 Because Eve is not yet created. 00:42:24.91\00:42:27.14 That makes sense, doesn't it, right? 00:42:27.18\00:42:29.08 Now we can see each passage, even within once again, 00:42:29.11\00:42:32.61 the context of what we're talking about 00:42:32.65\00:42:34.48 'cause we're simply looking for what is truth, 00:42:34.52\00:42:36.92 and there has to be a break down. 00:42:36.95\00:42:38.29 We have to make sure that it fits 00:42:38.32\00:42:40.29 with what the Bible writers and Holy Spirit 00:42:40.32\00:42:42.19 wants us to learn from these things. 00:42:42.22\00:42:44.26 We see each passage within the context 00:42:44.29\00:42:45.99 two chapters we can see a difference 00:42:46.03\00:42:47.96 between Adam as humanity, 00:42:48.00\00:42:50.47 Genesis 1:27 00:42:50.50\00:42:52.53 and the man Adam in Genesis 2:7 as a person 00:42:52.57\00:42:57.77 and it can be found in the genealogies 00:42:57.81\00:43:00.54 in Genesis Chapter 5, 00:43:00.58\00:43:02.94 even in reference to Jesus, 00:43:02.98\00:43:04.31 you notice that in Romans 5:12-14, 00:43:04.35\00:43:08.15 who becomes the second Adam. 00:43:08.18\00:43:10.42 Notice this, 00:43:10.45\00:43:11.79 in the context of the creation of Adam and Eve, 00:43:11.82\00:43:14.36 we can see the larger creation here, 00:43:14.39\00:43:17.89 or the bigger event, 00:43:17.93\00:43:20.00 meaning in Genesis Chapter 1 and Genesis Chapter 2, 00:43:20.03\00:43:23.97 there's development, 00:43:24.00\00:43:25.33 there's things that are going on, 00:43:25.37\00:43:26.80 it takes into all the accounts, 00:43:26.84\00:43:28.94 and were shown a definite origin of humanity. 00:43:28.97\00:43:32.77 So it's not really to be, you know, complicated, 00:43:32.81\00:43:36.51 but we just simply want it into the setting 00:43:36.54\00:43:38.31 that the Holy Spirit meant for it to be, 00:43:38.35\00:43:40.25 it seemed like the more we read, 00:43:40.28\00:43:41.62 maybe the more confused we might get some time. 00:43:41.65\00:43:43.62 But if we expand on that, 00:43:43.65\00:43:45.25 we have a little bit time just to expand on that. 00:43:45.29\00:43:47.19 You'd go to Genesis Chapter 2, and you do like verses 15-23. 00:43:47.22\00:43:52.03 This is called the larger picture. 00:43:52.06\00:43:54.50 And what is the larger picture? 00:43:54.53\00:43:55.86 It begins to talk about the creation, 00:43:55.90\00:43:58.10 you know, of Adam and Eve 00:43:58.13\00:43:59.47 and then the creation of a woman 00:43:59.50\00:44:01.30 and how that was created. 00:44:01.34\00:44:03.57 God gave us that, we have Genesis, 00:44:03.61\00:44:04.94 maybe we have time to look that up 00:44:04.97\00:44:06.31 just we haven't done that in a while. 00:44:06.34\00:44:07.74 Genesis Chapter 1 or Chapter 2, wasn't it? 00:44:07.78\00:44:11.35 Genesis Chapter 2 start with verse 15. 00:44:11.38\00:44:13.85 You'll just see 00:44:13.88\00:44:15.22 the larger picture here quickly here. 00:44:15.25\00:44:16.58 In verse 15 it said, "The Lord God," did what? 00:44:16.62\00:44:19.22 "He took the man and put him 00:44:19.25\00:44:20.76 in the Garden of Eden to," do what? 00:44:20.79\00:44:22.89 "Have to dress it and to keep it." 00:44:22.92\00:44:24.26 Verse 18. 00:44:24.29\00:44:25.63 "And the Lord said, 00:44:25.66\00:44:27.00 'It's not good that man should be alone," 00:44:27.03\00:44:30.13 notice that, "I will make him an help meet." 00:44:30.17\00:44:33.40 Verse 20, "Adam gave names to all the cattle, 00:44:33.44\00:44:36.40 and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast," 00:44:36.44\00:44:38.74 notice this, "of the field. 00:44:38.77\00:44:40.18 And Adam was not found a help meet for him." 00:44:40.21\00:44:42.94 So you can go... What's this doing? 00:44:42.98\00:44:44.91 Is simply expanding 00:44:44.95\00:44:46.55 on what we've already is already talked about here. 00:44:46.58\00:44:48.95 So we must include that. I like to say the big picture. 00:44:48.98\00:44:51.59 We need the big picture verse 22, 00:44:51.62\00:44:53.36 "And the rib, 00:44:53.39\00:44:54.72 which the Lord God had taken from Adam, 00:44:54.76\00:44:56.96 made he," what? 00:44:56.99\00:44:58.33 "A woman, and brought her unto," notice, "the man." 00:44:58.36\00:45:01.56 Verse 24 last verse, 00:45:01.60\00:45:03.97 "Therefore shall a man leave his father 00:45:04.00\00:45:05.63 and his mother, and shall cleave unto the wife, 00:45:05.67\00:45:07.64 and they shall be one flesh." 00:45:07.67\00:45:09.77 You know, is context in text important? 00:45:09.80\00:45:13.21 Absolutely. 00:45:13.24\00:45:14.58 If we're looking for what is truth, 00:45:14.61\00:45:16.44 then we must consider these things 00:45:16.48\00:45:18.51 that we've talked about here in the setting of it, 00:45:18.55\00:45:21.95 and then to the expansion of the setting, 00:45:21.98\00:45:24.52 as God will shine more light upon it as we move along, 00:45:24.55\00:45:27.52 trying to study and find out what truth is. 00:45:27.56\00:45:29.09 Amen. 00:45:29.12\00:45:30.46 Thank you so much, Pastor Kenny, 00:45:30.49\00:45:31.89 what a great study as we look, 00:45:31.93\00:45:33.50 if you look into the Word of God, 00:45:33.53\00:45:35.20 language matters. 00:45:35.23\00:45:36.77 Repetition matters, 00:45:36.80\00:45:38.13 the meaning of the words matter, 00:45:38.17\00:45:40.34 context and the text matters. 00:45:40.37\00:45:42.90 On Thursday, before I tell you the title, 00:45:42.94\00:45:45.37 I'm going to say Thursday 00:45:45.41\00:45:46.74 we talked about the largest context possible. 00:45:46.78\00:45:50.58 That's the book of the Bible. 00:45:50.61\00:45:52.18 So we look at Thursday's lesson is the Books 00:45:52.21\00:45:55.28 and Their Message. 00:45:55.32\00:45:56.65 So we look at instead of just reading one word, 00:45:56.69\00:45:58.85 which is text, 00:45:58.89\00:46:00.22 and then we expand that to a phrase or a chapter, 00:46:00.26\00:46:03.19 or a few chapters, we're expanding it, 00:46:03.22\00:46:06.09 like zooming out, as it were, 00:46:06.13\00:46:08.46 so that you see the entire book. 00:46:08.50\00:46:10.83 There are 66 books in the Word of God, 00:46:10.87\00:46:13.30 we know 39 in the Old Testament, 00:46:13.34\00:46:15.40 27 in the New. 00:46:15.44\00:46:18.24 When you look at the books of the Bible, 00:46:18.27\00:46:21.54 there's some questions we could ask ourselves, 00:46:21.58\00:46:23.61 the author who wrote the book? 00:46:23.65\00:46:26.08 How did this person's experience 00:46:26.11\00:46:28.48 shape the interpretation of the book 00:46:28.52\00:46:30.52 or their intention in writing the book? 00:46:30.55\00:46:32.82 We could ask ourselves that 00:46:32.85\00:46:34.19 because it would make a difference 00:46:34.22\00:46:35.56 in how we understand that particular book 00:46:35.59\00:46:37.69 in the Bible. 00:46:37.73\00:46:39.19 We could ask the literary genre. 00:46:39.23\00:46:41.50 What literary mode was used to communicate to the reader? 00:46:41.53\00:46:45.60 We could talk about the purpose. 00:46:45.63\00:46:47.97 Why was the book written? The setting? 00:46:48.00\00:46:50.21 What is the cultural and historical context 00:46:50.24\00:46:53.11 for the book? 00:46:53.14\00:46:54.48 The message and theme, 00:46:54.51\00:46:55.84 what is being conveyed by the book? 00:46:55.88\00:46:57.35 What is the theme? 00:46:57.38\00:46:58.71 What is the biblical truth conveyed? 00:46:58.75\00:47:01.18 Now there is no way 00:47:01.22\00:47:02.55 we can talk about all that for 66 books 00:47:02.58\00:47:04.59 'cause we'd be here a very long-time. 00:47:04.62\00:47:06.45 So what I'm going to do is to break it down 00:47:06.49\00:47:08.82 into the different literary sections of the Bible. 00:47:08.86\00:47:12.59 And we're taking one book from each section 00:47:12.63\00:47:15.23 and we'll discuss each book Lord willing, 00:47:15.26\00:47:17.03 if we get through it. 00:47:17.07\00:47:18.40 So the first section, the first literary section, 00:47:18.43\00:47:21.10 is the first five books of the Bible. 00:47:21.14\00:47:23.97 The five books of the law, 00:47:24.01\00:47:25.51 this is Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, 00:47:25.54\00:47:27.61 Numbers, and Deuteronomy. 00:47:27.64\00:47:29.54 Also known as the Torah, 00:47:29.58\00:47:30.91 it forms a structural unity 00:47:30.95\00:47:33.62 about the wanderings of God's people. 00:47:33.65\00:47:37.39 There's some history in there clearly 00:47:37.42\00:47:39.02 and some biblical narrative as well. 00:47:39.05\00:47:41.22 The author of those books would be Moses. 00:47:41.26\00:47:44.06 We're just picking the Book of Genesis 00:47:44.09\00:47:45.79 as just the book to pick for that. 00:47:45.83\00:47:47.70 And what's the theme of Genesis? 00:47:47.73\00:47:50.07 Genesis is all about origins. 00:47:50.10\00:47:52.13 It's about the beginning of the world. 00:47:52.17\00:47:54.10 The beginning of the human race 00:47:54.14\00:47:56.07 as Pastor Kenny talked 00:47:56.10\00:47:57.44 about creation of man and woman. 00:47:57.47\00:47:58.87 It's about the origin of light and darkness, 00:47:58.91\00:48:02.28 about animals and plants, the origin of the Sabbath. 00:48:02.31\00:48:06.15 The origin, unfortunately of sin, 00:48:06.18\00:48:08.88 as we see in Genesis 3, 00:48:08.92\00:48:10.59 but the origin of salvation 00:48:10.62\00:48:12.75 as we see that first messianic promise 00:48:12.79\00:48:14.82 in Genesis 3:15. 00:48:14.86\00:48:16.76 There's also in Genesis we see 00:48:16.79\00:48:19.03 a great foundation for our biblical theology. 00:48:19.06\00:48:23.30 There's a great deal of theological truth 00:48:23.33\00:48:25.23 conveyed in the Book of Genesis. 00:48:25.27\00:48:27.14 It kind of lays framework 00:48:27.17\00:48:28.50 as it were for the rest of the Bible. 00:48:28.54\00:48:30.27 We see God is Creator, God is Savior, 00:48:30.31\00:48:33.68 humans coming from the dust 00:48:33.71\00:48:35.34 and knowing that they're going to return 00:48:35.38\00:48:37.18 to the dust. 00:48:37.21\00:48:38.55 We see marriage, family, community, salvation, 00:48:38.58\00:48:43.18 the great controversy between good and evil. 00:48:43.22\00:48:45.62 These are just some of the theological themes 00:48:45.65\00:48:47.89 we see in the Book of Genesis. 00:48:47.92\00:48:49.59 Of course, Genesis has great, 00:48:49.62\00:48:52.39 the foundation for the covenant is laid in the Book of Genesis. 00:48:52.43\00:48:56.13 First messianic promise, the Noah covenant in Genesis 8, 00:48:56.16\00:48:59.63 the Abrahamic covenant in Genesis 15, 00:48:59.67\00:49:04.04 and there's great prayers 00:49:04.07\00:49:05.54 we see in the Book of Genesis as well. 00:49:05.57\00:49:07.78 Let's jump to the next literary section. 00:49:07.81\00:49:10.35 That's the 12 books of history. 00:49:10.38\00:49:13.01 This is from Joshua all the way to Nehemiah. 00:49:13.05\00:49:17.29 Now, there's various authors for that. 00:49:17.32\00:49:19.85 Some are clearly identified, 00:49:19.89\00:49:21.22 some are not really identified at all. 00:49:21.26\00:49:23.16 And it might be even some discussion 00:49:23.19\00:49:24.89 as to who authored some of these books. 00:49:24.93\00:49:27.40 I'm picking as my book to talk about Nehemiah. 00:49:27.43\00:49:29.93 We studied that not too long ago. 00:49:29.96\00:49:32.83 Really Ezra and Nehemiah 00:49:32.87\00:49:34.30 were actually almost combined volumes in the original 00:49:34.34\00:49:37.01 and you almost would study the two volumes together, 00:49:37.04\00:49:39.64 but in Nehemiah we see return, 00:49:39.67\00:49:41.78 remnant, reconstruction, reform, covenant, 00:49:41.81\00:49:45.65 social justice, God's sovereignty, 00:49:45.68\00:49:48.32 God's Word, the return of the exiles, 00:49:48.35\00:49:50.55 there was a first return under Zerubbabel 537 BC 00:49:50.59\00:49:54.12 and 50,000 people returned. 00:49:54.16\00:49:56.76 The second return under Ezra 00:49:56.79\00:49:59.03 that's 457 maybe 6000 individuals returning. 00:49:59.06\00:50:02.20 Then, of course, 00:50:02.23\00:50:03.57 the third return under Nehemiah in 444 BC. 00:50:03.60\00:50:06.94 The remnant, 00:50:06.97\00:50:08.30 we look at the remnant left in Babylon, 00:50:08.34\00:50:09.80 the remnant who chose 00:50:09.84\00:50:11.17 to return to Jerusalem and Israel. 00:50:11.21\00:50:14.48 We see reconstruction, 00:50:14.51\00:50:15.88 of course, Ezra focuses 00:50:15.91\00:50:17.25 on the reconstruction of the temple 00:50:17.28\00:50:18.75 while Nehemiah focuses 00:50:18.78\00:50:20.12 on the reconstruction of the wall. 00:50:20.15\00:50:22.42 We see reform and a commitment to return to the law of God 00:50:22.45\00:50:27.26 and return to the covenant relationship 00:50:27.29\00:50:30.46 that God wanted with His people. 00:50:30.49\00:50:33.43 Let's look at the next section 00:50:33.46\00:50:34.90 that is the five books of poetry and wisdom. 00:50:34.93\00:50:39.63 This is Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, 00:50:39.67\00:50:43.61 and Song of Solomon, various authors, 00:50:43.64\00:50:46.51 but the book I'm gonna look at is Psalms. 00:50:46.54\00:50:49.81 There are 150 Psalms and 116 of them have headings. 00:50:49.84\00:50:55.08 There's many individuals who wrote the Psalms. 00:50:55.12\00:50:57.15 Of course, we always say David wrote Psalms. 00:50:57.19\00:50:58.99 And David wrote a good deal of them. 00:50:59.02\00:51:01.12 However, Moses wrote, Solomon wrote, 00:51:01.16\00:51:04.43 Asaph the sons of Korah, Heman and Ethan, 00:51:04.46\00:51:08.96 some of the authors of the Book of Psalms. 00:51:09.00\00:51:11.60 And if you could do the span, it could be up to 1,000 years 00:51:11.63\00:51:15.74 for the entire span timeline 00:51:15.77\00:51:18.27 you could say of the Book of Psalms. 00:51:18.31\00:51:20.38 There's many different Psalm types. 00:51:20.41\00:51:23.18 We have prayers for help for individuals 00:51:23.21\00:51:25.31 and corporately. 00:51:25.35\00:51:26.75 We have community prayers for help. 00:51:26.78\00:51:28.68 We have individual songs of Thanksgiving and praise 00:51:28.72\00:51:31.55 and community songs of Thanksgiving and praise. 00:51:31.59\00:51:34.92 We have hymns honoring God as Creator, 00:51:34.96\00:51:37.13 hymns honoring God as king, songs of trust, 00:51:37.16\00:51:40.16 and songs of Zion and royal Psalms 00:51:40.20\00:51:42.33 and pilgrimage songs and rituals for public worship, 00:51:42.36\00:51:46.70 wisdom Psalms. 00:51:46.74\00:51:48.50 The themes in the Book of Psalms 00:51:48.54\00:51:50.14 is the worthiness of God as our King and Judge 00:51:50.17\00:51:53.17 and Creator and Sustainer, 00:51:53.21\00:51:55.01 Savior, Redeemer, Healer, Refuge, Shepherd. 00:51:55.04\00:51:58.31 There's cries for deliverance and vindication. 00:51:58.35\00:52:02.22 There's sorrow for sin and confession of sin, 00:52:02.25\00:52:05.35 Discussion of the law, the coming Messiah, 00:52:05.39\00:52:07.86 the righteous and the wicked, the Sabbath, 00:52:07.89\00:52:10.53 the heavenly and the earthly sanctuary, 00:52:10.56\00:52:12.69 salvation, and suffering. 00:52:12.73\00:52:15.10 The last section of the Old Testament 00:52:15.13\00:52:17.20 would be the 17 books of prophecy. 00:52:17.23\00:52:20.24 These are the Major and the Minor Prophets, 00:52:20.27\00:52:22.30 of course, five major prophets and then the 12 minor prophets. 00:52:22.34\00:52:26.71 We're gonna look at the Book of Isaiah, 00:52:26.74\00:52:28.14 one of my favorite. 00:52:28.18\00:52:30.88 His name means the Lord saves. 00:52:30.91\00:52:33.01 Isaiah is a Book of Judgment 00:52:33.05\00:52:34.68 and a Book of Comfort and Restoration. 00:52:34.72\00:52:39.09 There's great messianic prophecies 00:52:39.12\00:52:41.22 conveyed in that book, 00:52:41.26\00:52:43.06 promises of mercy 00:52:43.09\00:52:44.43 and forgiveness and restoration. 00:52:44.46\00:52:46.06 God's holiness is emphasized in the Book of Isaiah, 00:52:46.09\00:52:49.96 maybe more than any other book of the Bible. 00:52:50.00\00:52:53.13 We see God's sovereignty and His trustworthiness 00:52:53.17\00:52:56.00 as keeper of the covenant, keeper of His promises. 00:52:56.04\00:53:00.08 We go to the New Testament. 00:53:00.11\00:53:01.64 The first four books would be the gospels, 00:53:01.68\00:53:04.95 Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 00:53:04.98\00:53:07.98 If we pick John, 00:53:08.02\00:53:09.35 written by the beloved Apostle John, 00:53:09.38\00:53:12.02 we see the theme in John is Jesus 00:53:12.05\00:53:14.69 is the Revelation of God, Jesus is eternal. 00:53:14.72\00:53:18.03 He's the companion of God, He's equal with God. 00:53:18.06\00:53:20.50 He is the Creator, the Sustainer. 00:53:20.53\00:53:22.93 We see the glory and exaltation of Jesus on the cross. 00:53:22.96\00:53:26.87 The cross of Christ is central to John's Gospel. 00:53:26.90\00:53:30.71 We see the Holy Spirit in John 14 to 16, 00:53:30.74\00:53:33.78 and that ministry to the believers, 00:53:33.81\00:53:36.41 then we jumped to the only book of history 00:53:36.44\00:53:37.95 in the New Testament, 00:53:37.98\00:53:39.31 the Book of Acts, biblical narrative, 00:53:39.35\00:53:41.02 one book, written, of course, by Luke, 00:53:41.05\00:53:43.49 the Gentile doctor 00:53:43.52\00:53:44.85 who was a companion of Paul in his journeys. 00:53:44.89\00:53:48.22 Acts is about the spread of the gospel 00:53:48.26\00:53:50.93 in the early Christian church, 00:53:50.96\00:53:53.33 and the power of God and the Holy Spirit as it goes 00:53:53.36\00:53:56.90 to not only Judea but to the Gentiles. 00:53:56.93\00:53:59.70 Then we have 21 epistles, 00:53:59.73\00:54:02.44 many of them written by the Apostle Paul, 00:54:02.47\00:54:05.04 some written by some other authors as well 00:54:05.07\00:54:07.64 and these are letters to individuals or churches. 00:54:07.68\00:54:10.85 We'll look quickly at Romans. 00:54:10.88\00:54:12.71 I love that Paul's most definitive statement 00:54:12.75\00:54:16.12 on salvation, faith, and grace of Christ. 00:54:16.15\00:54:20.16 We see in Romans 1-3, 00:54:20.19\00:54:21.56 the effects of sin upon Jews and Gentiles alike. 00:54:21.59\00:54:25.49 Romans 3-5, 00:54:25.53\00:54:26.90 justification by grace through faith. 00:54:26.93\00:54:29.73 Romans 6 is that Christ's burial 00:54:29.76\00:54:31.83 and resurrection and our baptism as symbolic 00:54:31.87\00:54:35.27 of His dying to the old life rising to new life. 00:54:35.30\00:54:38.64 Romans 7, the conflict between self and Christ. 00:54:38.67\00:54:42.38 Romans 8, victory through Jesus, 00:54:42.41\00:54:44.48 through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit. 00:54:44.51\00:54:47.52 Romans 9-11, the relationship between the church in Israel. 00:54:47.55\00:54:51.65 Romans 12-15, we see practical Christianity, 00:54:51.69\00:54:55.46 how we are called to live as Christians. 00:54:55.49\00:54:57.29 And the final book, 00:54:57.33\00:54:59.09 Revelation stands by itself the book of prophecy, 00:54:59.13\00:55:03.13 written by the Apostle John. 00:55:03.16\00:55:05.67 Themes in there is Jesus Christ, 00:55:05.70\00:55:07.80 the Son of Man, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, 00:55:07.84\00:55:10.04 the Lamb, the Word of God, 00:55:10.07\00:55:12.21 the heavenly sanctuary in the throne room, 00:55:12.24\00:55:15.34 the cross in the gospel, 00:55:15.38\00:55:17.15 the church, the end of the world, 00:55:17.18\00:55:19.28 wonderful prophecies about the soon return of Jesus. 00:55:19.31\00:55:24.02 And then it ends with the earth made anew. 00:55:24.05\00:55:26.96 So when we look at context, we see of the books, 00:55:26.99\00:55:29.99 we see what God intended through each author 00:55:30.03\00:55:32.96 to convey to us today. 00:55:32.99\00:55:35.16 Praise the Lord.
