How's it going for you today? 00:01:34.59\00:01:37.73 Praising the Lord for His goodness and mercy. 00:01:37.76\00:01:39.49 That's right. 00:01:39.53\00:01:40.86 And now Pastor Ryan Day you're ready, our historian? 00:01:40.90\00:01:43.87 Always ready. I tell you. 00:01:43.90\00:01:46.80 You know before we go any further 00:01:46.84\00:01:48.24 however to dive in our lesson, 00:01:48.27\00:01:49.60 we are going to ask the Lord's blessing. 00:01:49.64\00:01:51.37 And I'm going to ask Pastor Dinzey, 00:01:51.41\00:01:52.74 if you would have our prayer for us today. 00:01:52.77\00:01:54.18 Sure. 00:01:54.21\00:01:55.94 Our loving Heavenly Father, 00:01:55.98\00:01:57.91 we want to thank You for Your kindness, 00:01:57.95\00:02:00.38 Your mercy, and that 00:02:00.42\00:02:02.48 You are always thinking of us. 00:02:02.52\00:02:05.59 We want to praise You 00:02:05.62\00:02:06.96 because You have a plan of salvation 00:02:06.99\00:02:10.19 that reaches every single person. 00:02:10.23\00:02:13.23 And we ask You, Father, 00:02:13.26\00:02:14.60 to bless us with the Holy Spirit, 00:02:14.63\00:02:16.23 that we may speak Your words. 00:02:16.26\00:02:18.27 And we also ask that You will bless everyone 00:02:18.30\00:02:21.14 that is listening, 00:02:21.17\00:02:22.54 that they may be drawn close to You, 00:02:22.57\00:02:25.27 and that Your name may be glorified. 00:02:25.31\00:02:26.78 We ask in Jesus name, amen. Amen. 00:02:26.81\00:02:29.08 Thank you so much. 00:02:29.11\00:02:30.98 The origin and nature of the Bible, 00:02:31.01\00:02:32.95 so many things have to do with origin. 00:02:32.98\00:02:35.62 You know, that's a question people often say, 00:02:35.65\00:02:37.52 when we meet them, where are you from? 00:02:37.55\00:02:39.85 And we try to qualify that by making where we are 00:02:39.89\00:02:42.86 from a very exciting and vital place. 00:02:42.89\00:02:46.66 I'm from New York, but I live in the Midwest 00:02:46.70\00:02:51.13 in Thompsonville, West Frankfort, 00:02:51.17\00:02:53.74 and then people tend to all automatically 00:02:53.77\00:02:56.81 draw conclusions about, 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.74 something about where you're from 00:02:58.77\00:03:00.14 and where you are. 00:03:00.18\00:03:01.51 And so when we think about the origin 00:03:01.54\00:03:03.55 and the nature of the Bible, 00:03:03.58\00:03:05.21 it's a part of our society in which we live. 00:03:05.25\00:03:07.58 Origins have a lot to do. Are you European? 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.35 Are you from the Middle East? 00:03:10.39\00:03:11.72 Are you from the islands of the sea? 00:03:11.75\00:03:13.09 Are you from Asia? 00:03:13.12\00:03:14.46 Well the Bible, in fact, is not from the Middle East 00:03:14.49\00:03:17.09 or from the islands of the sea, the Bible is divinely born. 00:03:17.13\00:03:21.03 It's really from the heart of God. 00:03:21.06\00:03:24.50 So when we think about that, 00:03:24.53\00:03:25.87 let's look at our Sabbath School lesson, 00:03:25.90\00:03:27.34 our text for this lesson study. 00:03:27.37\00:03:31.27 It is taken from 2nd, 00:03:31.31\00:03:33.88 actually 1 Thessalonians 2:13. 00:03:33.91\00:03:37.55 And it reads as follows, 00:03:37.58\00:03:39.58 "For this reason 00:03:39.61\00:03:42.28 we also thank God without ceasing, 00:03:42.32\00:03:45.12 because when you received the word of God 00:03:45.15\00:03:47.56 which you heard from us, 00:03:47.59\00:03:49.36 you welcomed it not as the word of men, 00:03:49.39\00:03:52.09 but as it is in truth, the word of God, 00:03:52.13\00:03:55.50 which also effectively works in you who believe." 00:03:55.53\00:04:00.07 And I love that scripture, because it talks about, 00:04:00.10\00:04:02.34 to me it's about food. 00:04:02.37\00:04:03.71 And I know, but I don't want to make food 00:04:03.74\00:04:05.74 a focal point, 00:04:05.77\00:04:07.11 but you know, you could look at food 00:04:07.14\00:04:09.11 and it will do you no good. 00:04:09.14\00:04:10.95 Or you could eat food 00:04:10.98\00:04:12.55 and then it'll begin to nourish you. 00:04:12.58\00:04:14.58 In our modern society today there are many Bibles. 00:04:14.62\00:04:17.92 We have them in printed form, we have them in digital form, 00:04:17.95\00:04:20.62 we have them in various translations. 00:04:20.66\00:04:22.72 But the point I want to begin our lesson study 00:04:22.76\00:04:24.63 with is regardless of the divinity of the Bible 00:04:24.66\00:04:27.36 and the origin and nature of it, 00:04:27.40\00:04:28.80 unless you imbibe the Bible, 00:04:28.83\00:04:31.27 unless it permeates your mind and your life, 00:04:31.30\00:04:34.70 the living Word can never bring life to you, 00:04:34.74\00:04:37.47 except it is ingested. 00:04:37.51\00:04:39.41 And so I want to encourage you, 00:04:39.44\00:04:41.04 you may be living in a fast paced world 00:04:41.08\00:04:42.91 like we are. 00:04:42.94\00:04:44.41 We live in a very fast paced society, 00:04:44.45\00:04:46.15 but if we don't partake of God's Word, 00:04:46.18\00:04:49.12 not just as a point of study or developing of a sermon, 00:04:49.15\00:04:52.49 but it has to be our own personal devotion, 00:04:52.52\00:04:55.02 like our cereal in the morning, 00:04:55.06\00:04:57.06 like the thing that gives us nourishment for our day. 00:04:57.09\00:04:59.59 When it becomes a personal impact, 00:04:59.63\00:05:02.06 then the personal effect and the presence of God 00:05:02.10\00:05:04.60 will be experienced in our lives. 00:05:04.63\00:05:06.60 Now, one of the questions asked on Sunday's lesson. 00:05:06.63\00:05:08.94 Go to Sunday with me, 00:05:08.97\00:05:10.94 as we turn to Sunday is about Peter. 00:05:10.97\00:05:14.64 How does Peter express his conviction about the origin 00:05:14.68\00:05:17.81 of the Bible's prophetic message? 00:05:17.85\00:05:20.05 Let's turn to 2 Peter 1:19-21, 00:05:20.08\00:05:24.05 how does he express his conviction? 00:05:24.09\00:05:26.05 You know, unless you have a conviction, 00:05:26.09\00:05:27.42 you just have an opinion. 00:05:27.46\00:05:29.02 A conviction is something that goes deeper 00:05:29.06\00:05:31.33 than just an opinion. 00:05:31.36\00:05:33.06 It becomes the model of your life, 00:05:33.09\00:05:34.93 I am convicted, 00:05:34.96\00:05:36.36 and then you mention what the conviction is. 00:05:36.40\00:05:38.80 Well, Peter mentions his conviction 00:05:38.83\00:05:41.10 and who better than a man who had to be convicted 00:05:41.14\00:05:45.01 before he was converted? 00:05:45.04\00:05:47.68 Listen to what he says about prophecy. 00:05:47.71\00:05:51.01 2 Peter 1:19. 00:05:51.05\00:05:53.15 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed 00:05:53.18\00:05:57.12 or a more sure word of prophecy 00:05:57.15\00:05:59.79 as the King James Version says, right, Pastor Kenny? 00:05:59.82\00:06:01.72 Yes. 00:06:01.76\00:06:03.09 "Which you do well to take heed as a light 00:06:03.12\00:06:05.96 that shines in a dark place, 00:06:05.99\00:06:08.70 until the day dawns 00:06:08.73\00:06:10.37 and the morning star rises in your hearts, 00:06:10.40\00:06:13.23 knowing this first that no prophecy of the scripture 00:06:13.27\00:06:17.44 is of any," what?" 00:06:17.47\00:06:18.81 Private interpretation, for prophecy never came 00:06:18.84\00:06:22.01 by the will of man, 00:06:22.04\00:06:23.38 but holy men of God spoke 00:06:23.41\00:06:25.18 as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." 00:06:25.21\00:06:28.32 Vitally important point to understand 00:06:28.35\00:06:30.15 from the very beginning. 00:06:30.19\00:06:31.75 Prophecy ceases to be a blessing 00:06:31.79\00:06:33.69 when it becomes something that's private. 00:06:33.72\00:06:36.12 That's why what I like about the lesson studies, 00:06:36.16\00:06:38.06 and many of you might know that 00:06:38.09\00:06:39.43 before these lessons studies get to us, 00:06:39.46\00:06:41.06 they go through committee, through committee, 00:06:41.10\00:06:42.66 through committee, edited, edited, edited, 00:06:42.70\00:06:45.43 people look at it, 00:06:45.47\00:06:46.80 it's not just the opinions of two men, 00:06:46.84\00:06:48.77 no matter how learned they are, 00:06:48.80\00:06:50.37 but they are examined and they are qualified, 00:06:50.41\00:06:55.14 and if there's something that is not in harmony, 00:06:55.18\00:06:57.35 and the committee sees it, 00:06:57.38\00:06:58.81 that's why holy men of God, they were literally examined 00:06:58.85\00:07:03.08 by the Lord chosen by Him, 00:07:03.12\00:07:05.75 and filled and directed by the Holy Spirit. 00:07:05.79\00:07:08.12 So we know that it's confirmed. 00:07:08.16\00:07:10.06 It's a light that shines brighter and brighter. 00:07:10.09\00:07:12.76 And when you study the Bible and you understand prophecy, 00:07:12.79\00:07:16.36 it becomes brighter and brighter, 00:07:16.40\00:07:18.10 clearer and clearer, leading us to that perfect day. 00:07:18.13\00:07:21.30 Now, some of the possible approaches 00:07:21.34\00:07:23.67 to studying the Bible are these. 00:07:23.71\00:07:25.27 First of all, 00:07:25.31\00:07:26.64 the Bible is a book of confirmation, 00:07:26.68\00:07:28.94 not a book of speculation. 00:07:28.98\00:07:31.38 It's vitally important. It's a book of confirmation. 00:07:31.41\00:07:33.01 That's right. 00:07:33.05\00:07:34.38 It's confirmed, it's not confirmed just 00:07:34.42\00:07:36.55 and I like the way you did that last lesson, Ryan, 00:07:36.58\00:07:38.42 you pointed out 00:07:38.45\00:07:39.79 the historical references of people 00:07:39.82\00:07:41.89 that are not necessarily Christians, 00:07:41.92\00:07:43.93 but they're saying you can't argue with it, 00:07:43.96\00:07:46.19 you know, two and two is four, 00:07:46.23\00:07:47.56 no matter what your denomination believes. 00:07:47.60\00:07:49.46 You could be convicted or converted 00:07:49.50\00:07:50.87 or you could be not a Christian. 00:07:50.90\00:07:52.23 It's a fact two and two is four. 00:07:52.27\00:07:54.14 So the Bible is a book of confirmation, 00:07:54.17\00:07:56.10 not a book of speculation. 00:07:56.14\00:07:57.47 Secondly, the Bible is a book of instruction, 00:07:57.51\00:07:59.91 not a book of suggestions. 00:07:59.94\00:08:02.84 You know, it's not God saying, I suggest you do this. 00:08:02.88\00:08:06.05 That's the political approach. 00:08:06.08\00:08:07.42 The Lord is saying, "That's why the commandments 00:08:07.45\00:08:09.15 I call suggestions, the Ten Commandments." 00:08:09.18\00:08:11.59 When you follow Bible, 00:08:11.62\00:08:13.12 you find its instructions are good for reproof, 00:08:13.15\00:08:16.09 for correction, for instruction that the man of God, 00:08:16.12\00:08:18.99 the woman of God may be thoroughly equipped. 00:08:19.03\00:08:21.40 We cannot go out into this world in a sinful battle, 00:08:21.43\00:08:24.93 without the whole armor of God. 00:08:24.97\00:08:27.14 And you can be fully clad, that's the defensive weapons, 00:08:27.17\00:08:30.77 but the Spirit of God, 00:08:30.81\00:08:32.14 the sword of God is the only offensive weapon 00:08:32.17\00:08:34.64 you have. 00:08:34.68\00:08:36.01 If you are not sufficiently capable in using it, 00:08:36.04\00:08:38.95 you're just a beautiful soldier with no weapon at all. 00:08:38.98\00:08:42.12 Certainly, the Bible is a living book. 00:08:42.15\00:08:44.62 The more we read, the brighter it gets. 00:08:44.65\00:08:48.56 Fourthly, the Bible is a book of gradual revelation, 00:08:48.59\00:08:51.76 until the day dawns. 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.70 I mean, we've all read the Bible 00:08:53.73\00:08:55.06 and somewhere along the way, we said, unbelievable. 00:08:55.10\00:08:57.27 I saw that, I didn't get that. 00:08:57.30\00:08:59.63 That happened to me just recently 00:08:59.67\00:09:01.30 about the message to Pharaoh that God had raised up Pharaoh 00:09:01.34\00:09:04.61 for a purpose. 00:09:04.64\00:09:05.97 I read the Bible for many years and never caught that. 00:09:06.01\00:09:08.04 It's the dawning of the Bible, it gets brighter and brighter. 00:09:08.08\00:09:11.18 The other part the Bible does not just inform 00:09:11.21\00:09:14.22 but the Bible is intended to transform. 00:09:14.25\00:09:17.15 Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. 00:09:17.19\00:09:20.02 And next, the Bible is the product 00:09:20.06\00:09:21.79 of direct communication 00:09:21.82\00:09:23.16 between humanity and divinity. 00:09:23.19\00:09:25.13 Taking the divine element into consideration 00:09:25.16\00:09:27.73 alters our approach to God's Word. 00:09:27.76\00:09:30.40 You know, if you get a letter from the President, 00:09:30.43\00:09:32.90 you don't just deal with that like you got a letter 00:09:32.93\00:09:35.30 from your local bill collector. 00:09:35.34\00:09:37.31 You say, "Where's that from? 00:09:37.34\00:09:38.74 Oh, the United States? The what? 00:09:38.77\00:09:42.31 Who's it from?" 00:09:42.34\00:09:44.15 "The President of the United States." 00:09:44.18\00:09:45.68 "Wait, wait, wait, wait, put the bills down. 00:09:45.71\00:09:47.35 I got to read this. Why would he write me?" 00:09:47.38\00:09:49.45 Well, friends, the Bible is from the God of the universe. 00:09:49.48\00:09:53.25 When we understand, 00:09:53.29\00:09:54.82 it alters our approach to the reading of the Bible. 00:09:54.86\00:09:58.89 Notice what Paul said to Timothy, 00:09:58.93\00:10:01.33 the protege, he said in 2 Timothy 3:15, 00:10:01.36\00:10:04.33 the Bible is not just scriptures, 00:10:04.37\00:10:05.70 it is holy. 00:10:05.73\00:10:07.07 Notice what he said." 00:10:07.10\00:10:08.74 And that from childhood you have known 00:10:08.77\00:10:11.41 the Holy Scriptures, 00:10:11.44\00:10:13.38 which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith 00:10:13.41\00:10:16.64 which is in Christ Jesus." 00:10:16.68\00:10:18.01 I've learned and we all have learned 00:10:18.05\00:10:19.45 when you study the Bible, 00:10:19.48\00:10:21.05 you know, you can fit into any circle, 00:10:21.08\00:10:23.28 no matter what the qualifications, 00:10:23.32\00:10:25.19 no matter what the educational achievements, 00:10:25.22\00:10:26.99 I feel comfortable in any circle, 00:10:27.02\00:10:29.56 as I said to one prime minister, 00:10:29.59\00:10:32.03 that said to me, "Why are you not afraid?" 00:10:32.06\00:10:33.66 I said him respectfully, 00:10:33.70\00:10:35.03 the Prime Minister of St. Lucia, 00:10:35.06\00:10:37.73 He said, "Why you not afraid?" 00:10:37.77\00:10:39.10 I said, "Because I answer to an even higher authority." 00:10:39.13\00:10:42.10 And he looked at me in a very somber way 00:10:42.14\00:10:43.71 until he smiled and said, "I like that." 00:10:43.74\00:10:45.67 You know, the Bible 00:10:45.71\00:10:47.04 is connected to an even higher authority 00:10:47.08\00:10:48.74 than any dignitary or any prelate on earth. 00:10:48.78\00:10:51.51 That's why Paul, in Romans 1:2 it says, which he promised, 00:10:51.55\00:10:55.85 speaking about the Bible, "Which he promised before, 00:10:55.88\00:10:59.15 through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures." 00:10:59.19\00:11:03.53 Next the Bible is a cooperative work. 00:11:03.56\00:11:05.43 It is not the product of a single entity. 00:11:05.46\00:11:08.66 Daniel 12:4, Daniel says, "But you Daniel, 00:11:08.70\00:11:12.43 the Lord told him to speak, 00:11:12.47\00:11:13.80 "You Daniel shut up the words 00:11:13.84\00:11:16.17 and seal the book until the time of the end, 00:11:16.20\00:11:18.71 many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase." 00:11:18.74\00:11:22.44 This cooperative work between God and Daniel 00:11:22.48\00:11:25.98 became a light for future generations. 00:11:26.01\00:11:28.25 And we are thanking the Lord 00:11:28.28\00:11:30.29 that Daniel was humble enough 00:11:30.32\00:11:32.19 to do what God had instructed him, 00:11:32.22\00:11:33.72 but I want to make it very clear, 00:11:33.76\00:11:35.09 God never told John, shut up Revelation. 00:11:35.12\00:11:37.56 It's a continuing, Revelation has never been shut. 00:11:37.59\00:11:40.23 The third thing the Bible directs, 00:11:40.26\00:11:42.33 the Bible is a book of direction. 00:11:42.36\00:11:44.30 Isaiah 30:21. 00:11:44.33\00:11:46.33 Here's what the Bible says, "Your ears shall hear a word 00:11:46.37\00:11:51.17 behind you saying, 'This is the way, walk in it. 00:11:51.21\00:11:55.31 Whenever you turn to the right hand 00:11:55.34\00:11:56.88 or whenever you turn to the left.'" 00:11:56.91\00:11:59.01 That's why 1 John 1:7 says, 00:11:59.05\00:12:01.38 "If we walk in the light as He is in the light, 00:12:01.42\00:12:04.09 we have fellowship with one another," 00:12:04.12\00:12:06.19 deeper than friendship, 00:12:06.22\00:12:07.56 Koinonia, but you have to walk in the light. 00:12:07.59\00:12:09.69 And He'll tell you, "If you go left or go right, 00:12:09.72\00:12:11.86 He'll say, "This is the way, walk in it." 00:12:11.89\00:12:14.93 The Bible is not human invention. 00:12:14.96\00:12:17.13 In 2 Peter 1:16. 00:12:17.17\00:12:19.70 "For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, 00:12:19.73\00:12:22.40 when we made known to you the power 00:12:22.44\00:12:24.57 and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:12:24.61\00:12:26.51 but were eyewitnesses of His Majesty." 00:12:26.54\00:12:30.38 The Bible is not a human dimension. 00:12:30.41\00:12:33.45 We did not follow cunningly devised fable. 00:12:33.48\00:12:36.28 And we know the Bible is inspired. 00:12:36.32\00:12:37.65 I went past that all scripture is given by inspiration of God, 00:12:37.69\00:12:40.06 we made that point before. 00:12:40.09\00:12:41.79 Also our faith and trust in God's Word 00:12:41.82\00:12:44.46 are based on the belief that it is of divine origin. 00:12:44.49\00:12:49.56 James 1:21 and this is actually has been 00:12:49.60\00:12:53.67 so much a part of our Sabbath School openers, 00:12:53.70\00:12:56.14 receiving with meekness the implanted Word 00:12:56.17\00:13:00.14 which is able to save your souls. 00:13:00.18\00:13:02.61 Divine origin, receding with meekness, 00:13:02.64\00:13:05.51 the implanted Word. 00:13:05.55\00:13:06.88 I like that word because something 00:13:06.92\00:13:08.25 that's planted will not fail to continue to grow. 00:13:08.28\00:13:11.62 And the other one, 00:13:11.65\00:13:12.99 we are not obligated to its contents, 00:13:13.02\00:13:15.36 we are obligated to its author. 00:13:15.39\00:13:17.63 That's right. That's quite different. 00:13:17.66\00:13:18.99 Amen. It's good. 00:13:19.03\00:13:20.36 1 Thessalonians 2:13, which is the passage we read, 00:13:20.40\00:13:22.90 it effectively works in those of us who believe. 00:13:22.93\00:13:26.67 And finally, we don't trust the Bible, 00:13:26.70\00:13:29.20 because it's a good book. 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.07 We trust the Bible because it's written by a good author. 00:13:31.11\00:13:34.68 That's right. Okay. 00:13:34.71\00:13:36.04 That's right. 00:13:36.08\00:13:37.41 Deuteronomy 32:4, "He is the rock, 00:13:37.45\00:13:40.15 His work is perfect, for all His ways are justice, 00:13:40.18\00:13:44.75 a God of truth and without injustice, 00:13:44.79\00:13:47.72 righteous and upright is He?" 00:13:47.76\00:13:51.36 Jill? Amen. 00:13:51.39\00:13:52.76 Thank you so much, Pastor John. 00:13:52.79\00:13:54.86 You had some good lists going on there. 00:13:54.90\00:13:56.23 Okay. 00:13:56.26\00:13:57.60 I didn't do a list but you thought it. 00:13:57.63\00:13:58.97 That was good. 00:13:59.00\00:14:00.34 The divine revelation of the Bible. 00:14:00.37\00:14:01.70 I have Monday's lesson, the Process of Inspiration. 00:14:01.74\00:14:05.34 So, before we jump in, 00:14:05.37\00:14:06.91 I want to tell you where we are going. 00:14:06.94\00:14:09.84 Hopefully we'll lend some clarity 00:14:09.88\00:14:11.21 because we're going quite a few different directions. 00:14:11.25\00:14:13.72 We're looking at inspiration versus revelation. 00:14:13.75\00:14:16.65 We're going to start with that, then what inspiration is not, 00:14:16.69\00:14:21.22 then theories of inspiration, forms of inspiration 00:14:21.26\00:14:25.63 and finally, evidence for inspiration. 00:14:25.66\00:14:29.36 Lord willing, we're going to get through all of that. 00:14:29.40\00:14:31.53 So let's look at inspiration versus revelation. 00:14:31.57\00:14:35.47 Revelation is the act of communicating 00:14:35.50\00:14:37.77 divine knowledge to the mind. 00:14:37.81\00:14:41.04 Inspiration is the act of the same spirit, 00:14:41.08\00:14:45.18 guiding those who make that knowledge 00:14:45.21\00:14:47.98 known to someone else, 00:14:48.02\00:14:50.25 guiding those who make that knowledge known to others. 00:14:50.29\00:14:53.56 Revelation, in other words, is the Holy Spirit 00:14:53.59\00:14:56.19 or God speaking directly into the individual. 00:14:56.22\00:14:58.66 That would be like Abraham. 00:14:58.69\00:15:00.33 He was granted a revelation when God came and said, 00:15:00.36\00:15:03.16 "Look up at the sky 00:15:03.20\00:15:04.77 and your descendants are going to be 00:15:04.80\00:15:07.34 like the sand of the sea or the stars in the heavens." 00:15:07.37\00:15:11.71 Now, He didn't communicate that 00:15:11.74\00:15:13.58 and He clearly didn't write a book, 00:15:13.61\00:15:14.94 he received the revelation and that was it. 00:15:14.98\00:15:17.45 Moses received a revelation 00:15:17.48\00:15:19.75 that was at the burning bush, right? 00:15:19.78\00:15:21.62 And God came and communicated to him. 00:15:21.65\00:15:24.22 But in addition, Moses communicated to others. 00:15:24.25\00:15:27.86 We know he wrote Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, 00:15:27.89\00:15:30.73 Deuteronomy. 00:15:30.76\00:15:32.26 He had inspiration, 00:15:32.29\00:15:33.76 the Holy Spirit inspired him to communicate 00:15:33.80\00:15:37.27 and write down that message. 00:15:37.30\00:15:39.50 What inspiration is not? 00:15:39.53\00:15:41.20 Inspiration is not revelation, we just discussed that. 00:15:41.24\00:15:44.51 Inspiration is not illumination. 00:15:44.54\00:15:47.84 Every born again Christian is to be illuminated 00:15:47.88\00:15:50.45 by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. 00:15:50.48\00:15:53.45 Does that mean every born again Christian is inspired? 00:15:53.48\00:15:56.28 No. 00:15:56.32\00:15:57.65 Does that mean every born again Christian is to be a prophet? 00:15:57.69\00:15:59.62 No. 00:15:59.65\00:16:00.99 So inspiration is not illumination. 00:16:01.02\00:16:03.56 Inspiration is not human genius. 00:16:03.59\00:16:07.60 You could say, 00:16:07.63\00:16:08.96 "Oh, that person is a really good writer." 00:16:09.00\00:16:10.43 Human genius might be a natural qualification. 00:16:10.47\00:16:13.34 But inspiration 00:16:13.37\00:16:14.70 is a supernatural qualification. 00:16:14.74\00:16:18.64 And finally, inspiration is not on the writer, 00:16:18.67\00:16:22.14 it is on the writing. 00:16:22.18\00:16:24.71 What I mean by that, 00:16:24.75\00:16:26.18 the Holy Spirit definitely uses the writer. 00:16:26.21\00:16:28.82 We're not discounting them. 00:16:28.85\00:16:30.72 But think about Paul, the Apostle Paul. 00:16:30.75\00:16:33.62 Was he a perfect man? Absolutely not. 00:16:33.66\00:16:36.96 We know he killed a few people before he became converted. 00:16:36.99\00:16:39.86 But even after he was converted, 00:16:39.89\00:16:41.26 Pastor Kenny, he withstood Peter to his face. 00:16:41.30\00:16:44.00 So there was still some of the old man in there. 00:16:44.03\00:16:47.90 Just because the authors in the Word of God 00:16:47.94\00:16:50.54 they were human, we know that, 00:16:50.57\00:16:51.91 and they made mistakes. 00:16:51.94\00:16:53.41 The fact that their books in the Bible 00:16:53.44\00:16:55.11 were divinely inspired does not mean that 00:16:55.14\00:16:56.98 they themselves were infallible. 00:16:57.01\00:16:59.71 The inspiration is on the writing. 00:16:59.75\00:17:02.35 It falls on the writer, 00:17:02.38\00:17:03.72 but it's specifically on the writing. 00:17:03.75\00:17:05.95 Let's look at some theories of inspiration. 00:17:05.99\00:17:09.32 You might recognize some of these. 00:17:09.36\00:17:10.83 First theory is called natural inspiration, 00:17:10.86\00:17:13.29 which we do not subscribe to. 00:17:13.33\00:17:15.26 And this theory, 00:17:15.30\00:17:16.63 there is no supernatural element. 00:17:16.67\00:17:18.83 People who believe this say that 00:17:18.87\00:17:20.20 Bible was written by great men who often erred. 00:17:20.24\00:17:23.44 That is not true, because we know 00:17:23.47\00:17:24.94 the Word of God says in 2 Peter 1:20 and 21, 00:17:24.97\00:17:27.84 we have referenced this before, 00:17:27.88\00:17:30.08 "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture 00:17:30.11\00:17:32.68 is of any private interpretation, 00:17:32.71\00:17:35.15 for prophecy never came by the will of men, 00:17:35.18\00:17:37.15 but holy men of God spoke 00:17:37.19\00:17:39.55 as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." 00:17:39.59\00:17:41.79 So natural inspiration is not biblical. 00:17:41.82\00:17:44.43 Second theory is partial inspiration. 00:17:44.46\00:17:47.93 That's the theory 00:17:47.96\00:17:49.30 that the Bible contains God's words, 00:17:49.33\00:17:50.97 but they must be sorted out 00:17:51.00\00:17:53.00 or somehow demythologized to find them. 00:17:53.03\00:17:56.60 In other words, some parts would be human 00:17:56.64\00:17:58.84 and some parts would be divine, 00:17:58.87\00:18:00.48 we do not subscribe to that either 00:18:00.51\00:18:02.31 because 2 Timothy 3:16. 00:18:02.34\00:18:04.45 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, 00:18:04.48\00:18:07.58 not parts, but all. 00:18:07.62\00:18:09.92 Third theory is conceptual inspiration. 00:18:09.95\00:18:13.79 That's where the thoughts of Scripture are inspired, 00:18:13.82\00:18:16.39 but the actual words are not. 00:18:16.42\00:18:18.73 There is some factual or scientific error. 00:18:18.76\00:18:21.96 We do not subscribe to that either, 00:18:22.00\00:18:23.47 because all scripture, 00:18:23.50\00:18:24.83 we just read that scripture is given by inspiration of God. 00:18:24.87\00:18:28.84 The fourth theory is called 00:18:28.87\00:18:30.21 the verbal dictation theory of inspiration. 00:18:30.24\00:18:34.24 This is where the writer passively sits back 00:18:34.28\00:18:36.85 and just records God's Word without any participation 00:18:36.88\00:18:40.55 of their own style or their own interpretation. 00:18:40.58\00:18:44.09 Now, clearly, God inspired holy men to write. 00:18:44.12\00:18:47.96 This theory was held years ago 00:18:47.99\00:18:50.33 and by time Martin Luther came on the scene, 00:18:50.36\00:18:52.66 and Calvin and others of the Protestant Reformation, 00:18:52.69\00:18:55.50 this theory was rejected. 00:18:55.53\00:18:58.53 We're subscribing to theory number five, 00:18:58.57\00:19:00.70 verbal plenary inspiration, 00:19:00.74\00:19:03.10 which means all the actual words of the Bible 00:19:03.14\00:19:06.07 are inspired, 00:19:06.11\00:19:07.44 yet written by individual authors 00:19:07.48\00:19:10.41 in their own language, context and personality. 00:19:10.45\00:19:14.98 We see that, in Great Controversy 00:19:15.02\00:19:17.19 actually page seven. 00:19:17.22\00:19:18.55 This is a quote from Ellen White. 00:19:18.59\00:19:19.92 "The Bible points to God as its author, 00:19:19.95\00:19:21.79 yet it was written by human hands. 00:19:21.82\00:19:24.23 And in the varied style of its different books. 00:19:24.26\00:19:26.96 It presents the characteristics of its several writers. 00:19:27.00\00:19:30.63 The truths revealed are all given by 00:19:30.67\00:19:32.47 inspiration of God, 00:19:32.50\00:19:33.97 yet they are expressed in the words of men." 00:19:34.00\00:19:37.84 So let's look at the forms of inspiration. 00:19:37.87\00:19:40.78 And that was the theories of inspiration. 00:19:40.81\00:19:42.18 Let's look at the forms of inspiration. 00:19:42.21\00:19:44.71 There's several different forms. 00:19:44.75\00:19:46.08 The first form would be when God directly says 00:19:46.11\00:19:49.18 something to a prophet say to say 00:19:49.22\00:19:51.85 and they write it down. 00:19:51.89\00:19:54.06 Zechariah 7:12. 00:19:54.09\00:19:55.99 "Yes, they made their hearts like flint, 00:19:56.02\00:19:58.73 refusing to hear the law in the words 00:19:58.76\00:20:01.00 which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit 00:20:01.03\00:20:03.03 through the former prophets." 00:20:03.06\00:20:04.47 Did you catch that? 00:20:04.50\00:20:05.83 It says the word that the Lord spoke 00:20:05.87\00:20:07.94 through the prophets. 00:20:07.97\00:20:10.31 Jonah 1:1 and 2, "The word of the Lord 00:20:10.34\00:20:13.04 came to Jonah saying, 'Arise, go to Nineveh.'" 00:20:13.07\00:20:16.48 So there's places in the Word of God words, 00:20:16.51\00:20:18.38 actually a direct, you could say 00:20:18.41\00:20:20.22 transcription of what God said. 00:20:20.25\00:20:23.39 God spoke a certain thing 00:20:23.42\00:20:24.92 and you read that in the prophets, 00:20:24.95\00:20:26.39 the word of the Lord came to me and I said, 00:20:26.42\00:20:28.22 and then you read that. 00:20:28.26\00:20:29.86 Now, there's other times when God influenced, 00:20:29.89\00:20:33.23 directed and superintended the writing of men 00:20:33.26\00:20:37.00 who wrote what God intended. 00:20:37.03\00:20:38.77 This is where they might use their own words, 00:20:38.80\00:20:41.40 their own phrases. 00:20:41.44\00:20:42.87 The biblical authors still using their own style 00:20:42.90\00:20:45.47 and personality and background, 00:20:45.51\00:20:47.01 yet God is still over all inspiring them 00:20:47.04\00:20:50.98 what to write. 00:20:51.01\00:20:53.31 You notice you read the scholarly epistles of Paul. 00:20:53.35\00:20:56.48 He clearly writes vastly different than say, John Mark, 00:20:56.52\00:20:59.65 who wrote the Book of Mark, 00:20:59.69\00:21:01.22 or the writings of John who had experienced 00:21:01.26\00:21:04.23 and walked with God. 00:21:04.26\00:21:05.83 You see the differences in personality, 00:21:05.86\00:21:08.03 yet the same God over all. 00:21:08.06\00:21:11.00 Finally let's look at evidences 00:21:11.03\00:21:14.40 for the inspiration of the Bible, 00:21:14.44\00:21:16.07 and I want to close 00:21:16.10\00:21:17.44 with five evidences for inspiration of the Bible. 00:21:17.47\00:21:20.68 There's more than five, but we'll just touch on five. 00:21:20.71\00:21:22.78 Number one is the written word in the Bible. 00:21:22.81\00:21:26.31 In other words we believe the Bible 00:21:26.35\00:21:28.05 is inspired because God said it is. 00:21:28.08\00:21:30.19 God's Word claims divine inspiration and origin. 00:21:30.22\00:21:34.52 We already read 2 Timothy 3:16. 00:21:34.56\00:21:36.69 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God." 00:21:36.73\00:21:39.96 Number two, the second evidence 00:21:40.00\00:21:41.50 for the inspiration of the Bible 00:21:41.53\00:21:43.37 is the fulfilled prophecy in the Word of God. 00:21:43.40\00:21:47.17 Last lesson, Pastor John talked about 00:21:47.20\00:21:49.64 the prophetic word. 00:21:49.67\00:21:51.17 And we see just a couple 00:21:51.21\00:21:52.71 I think of the 70-year prophecy of Babylonian captivity 00:21:52.74\00:21:56.38 found in the Book of Jeremiah. 00:21:56.41\00:21:58.35 And 70 years was prophesied 00:21:58.38\00:22:00.15 and it came to pass just as God said. 00:22:00.18\00:22:02.88 I think of Daniel Chapter 2, Daniel Chapter 7, 00:22:02.92\00:22:05.82 Daniel Chapter 8, 00:22:05.85\00:22:07.36 where the four successive kingdoms 00:22:07.39\00:22:09.46 and world empires, 00:22:09.49\00:22:10.83 all came true exactly as God predicted 00:22:10.86\00:22:14.70 years before it was to take place. 00:22:14.73\00:22:17.10 I think of Ezekiel talking about the destruction 00:22:17.13\00:22:19.40 of the city of Tyre. 00:22:19.43\00:22:21.07 That came to pass, just as God predicted. 00:22:21.10\00:22:24.97 I think of the hundreds 00:22:25.01\00:22:26.34 of prophecies in the Old Testament 00:22:26.37\00:22:27.98 predicting the coming Messiah. 00:22:28.01\00:22:29.98 And they came true exactly as God said. 00:22:30.01\00:22:33.42 Number three, third evidence for inspiration 00:22:33.45\00:22:35.62 of the Bible is the unity of the Bible. 00:22:35.65\00:22:38.62 Amen, that's right. 00:22:38.65\00:22:39.99 Many different authors, many different, 00:22:40.02\00:22:41.72 spanning many years 00:22:41.76\00:22:43.89 and yet there is an amazing cohesive 00:22:43.93\00:22:47.46 unity found in the Word of God. 00:22:47.50\00:22:50.97 Isaiah 28:10 precept must be upon precept, 00:22:51.00\00:22:55.17 precept upon precept line upon line, 00:22:55.20\00:22:57.44 line upon line, here a little and there a little, 00:22:57.47\00:22:59.94 but it is all cohesive in one because 00:22:59.97\00:23:02.24 God is the single author over all. 00:23:02.28\00:23:06.01 Number four, 00:23:06.05\00:23:07.38 evidence for inspiration of the Bible 00:23:07.42\00:23:09.55 that the Word of God has life giving power, 00:23:09.58\00:23:12.75 that by reading the Word of God 00:23:12.79\00:23:14.82 and by preaching the Word of God, 00:23:14.86\00:23:17.29 people's lives are converted. 00:23:17.33\00:23:20.16 We saw this in Acts Chapter 2, when Pentecost. 00:23:20.20\00:23:23.43 Now, of course, the Holy Spirit was poured out. 00:23:23.47\00:23:25.83 So we're not putting aside 00:23:25.87\00:23:27.67 that working of the Holy Spirit, 00:23:27.70\00:23:29.24 but 3,000 people were converted in one day 00:23:29.27\00:23:31.77 from hearing the preaching of the Word of God. 00:23:31.81\00:23:34.18 And the fifth evidence for the support 00:23:34.21\00:23:36.68 of the inspiration of the Word of God 00:23:36.71\00:23:38.41 is archeological support for the Bible. 00:23:38.45\00:23:41.58 Ryan talked about that. 00:23:41.62\00:23:43.15 Both in history and archaeology, 00:23:43.18\00:23:45.15 these finds they uncover things that people before said, 00:23:45.19\00:23:48.72 "No, just the Bible says that," 00:23:48.76\00:23:50.43 but now we find evidence that supports 00:23:50.46\00:23:53.63 the validity of the Word of God. 00:23:53.66\00:23:55.00 That's right. 00:23:55.03\00:23:56.36 Well, thank you Jill, that was powerful. 00:23:56.40\00:23:59.43 Now you started to fire. 00:23:59.47\00:24:00.87 Pastor Kenny, we're going to come to you 00:24:00.90\00:24:02.44 in a moment but we're going to just 00:24:02.47\00:24:03.81 take a short break and don't go away. 00:24:03.84\00:24:05.74 We'll be right back. 00:25:15.94\00:25:19.15 I mean, their minds were very good back then. 00:25:19.18\00:25:21.05 God can impress on the mind any of us, you know, 00:25:21.08\00:25:23.72 there's passage of scripture, the whole Bible, 00:25:23.75\00:25:25.39 if they wanted to by the Holy Spirit, 00:25:25.42\00:25:26.76 you just spit it out. 00:25:26.79\00:25:28.16 But interesting, God said to write, 00:25:28.19\00:25:30.63 He told him to write it down. 00:25:30.66\00:25:32.66 He told Moses, now He didn't say Moses, 00:25:32.69\00:25:35.40 just you know, you write it down. 00:25:35.43\00:25:37.23 He told him, you know, you can recite this 00:25:37.27\00:25:39.33 if you want to, and you want to do it 00:25:39.37\00:25:40.74 after it's written down you can recite it. 00:25:40.77\00:25:42.84 But He told him, you need to write it down. 00:25:42.87\00:25:45.07 So there was a reason to write it down. 00:25:45.11\00:25:46.44 I don't know if any of you learned 00:25:46.47\00:25:47.81 by writing things down. 00:25:47.84\00:25:49.54 I do, I write things down, 00:25:49.58\00:25:50.91 it helps my memory and then you go back 00:25:50.95\00:25:53.18 and you can read and so on. 00:25:53.21\00:25:54.55 The first we know it's God, then who's responsible? 00:25:54.58\00:25:57.02 God is in charge. 00:25:57.05\00:25:58.39 It's God who speaks, 00:25:58.42\00:25:59.75 the Holy Spirit empowers and brings to our remembrance. 00:25:59.79\00:26:02.42 It's God who created 00:26:02.46\00:26:03.79 the human language and He did it. 00:26:03.83\00:26:05.79 Why did He communicate and think about, 00:26:05.83\00:26:07.33 why did He have us to have human life? 00:26:07.36\00:26:09.06 Why do we speak, if it's not to speak for Him? 00:26:09.10\00:26:12.47 You know, I think it is to communicate His love 00:26:12.50\00:26:14.50 and communicate the truth. 00:26:14.54\00:26:16.04 That's the purpose of it. 00:26:16.07\00:26:17.41 The divinely inspired Word of God. 00:26:17.44\00:26:19.54 It needed to be, when He said speak, 00:26:19.57\00:26:21.24 it needed to be at least in my opinion, 00:26:21.28\00:26:22.98 a reliable source, 00:26:23.01\00:26:25.28 something that would be there, 00:26:25.31\00:26:26.82 more than just spoken, we know it need to be, 00:26:26.85\00:26:29.15 but something that could be there 00:26:29.18\00:26:30.52 something you could go refer back to. 00:26:30.55\00:26:32.95 You know, what if God's Word was just say just spoken 00:26:32.99\00:26:37.29 and not written down? 00:26:37.33\00:26:38.83 I wonder how it would be today 00:26:38.86\00:26:41.00 if He didn't say write it down and if it was just spoken? 00:26:41.03\00:26:44.53 I think about that when you hear all the time. 00:26:44.57\00:26:47.10 You know, would it be possible to keep this message straight? 00:26:47.14\00:26:50.91 Because we realize what we went you know, 00:26:50.94\00:26:52.37 years ago when you say when I'm going to whisper 00:26:52.41\00:26:53.94 something in Pastor John's ear, 00:26:53.98\00:26:56.34 and John when I get done and you tell like to Jill 00:26:56.38\00:26:58.38 and then you know going down. 00:26:58.41\00:26:59.75 And time it gets to the end, 00:26:59.78\00:27:01.12 just four or five people in there, right? 00:27:01.15\00:27:02.68 Sometime it's a completely different thing all together. 00:27:02.72\00:27:06.39 It makes no sense. 00:27:06.42\00:27:07.76 So God knew exactly what He was doing. 00:27:07.79\00:27:09.86 God commanded, 00:27:09.89\00:27:11.23 He commanded the holy men of God, 00:27:11.26\00:27:13.50 notice this as He did Moses. 00:27:13.53\00:27:15.36 He said, "Write these words." 00:27:15.40\00:27:17.53 And I think it's been very clear 00:27:17.57\00:27:18.90 on this panel so far, 00:27:18.93\00:27:20.27 that when God says something, we need to honor it, 00:27:20.30\00:27:22.70 and we need to do it. 00:27:22.74\00:27:24.07 There's a reason for it. 00:27:24.11\00:27:25.44 God never asked us to do something 00:27:25.47\00:27:26.81 unless there's a reason for it and it's for our own good. 00:27:26.84\00:27:29.71 God doesn't need it. He can remember it. 00:27:29.74\00:27:31.38 We need it, I need it. 00:27:31.41\00:27:33.48 So why did God say to write down His message? 00:27:33.52\00:27:35.72 I put down six things at least in my little simple mind 00:27:35.75\00:27:38.15 that would bring in my mind. 00:27:38.19\00:27:39.75 Sorry, Jill. That's good. 00:27:39.79\00:27:42.72 Simple answers would be. That's right. 00:27:42.76\00:27:45.56 It's catching on. You see, it's catching on. 00:27:45.59\00:27:47.36 Simple, right. 00:27:47.40\00:27:48.73 So we will not forget them so easily. 00:27:48.76\00:27:50.97 Just in the commandments and the fourth one says what? 00:27:51.00\00:27:54.20 Remember the Sabbath day. Remember why? 00:27:54.24\00:27:56.37 So we would not forget. 00:27:56.40\00:27:58.07 And here God says, "You write down 00:27:58.11\00:27:59.54 so you won't forget them so easily," 00:27:59.57\00:28:01.68 number one. 00:28:01.71\00:28:03.04 Number two, the Bible is a constant reference point. 00:28:03.08\00:28:06.61 We can always go to the Word of God, 00:28:06.65\00:28:08.72 it directs us to Him 00:28:08.75\00:28:10.29 and to His will for us in our life. 00:28:10.32\00:28:13.12 Number three, notice this, it's written on, 00:28:13.15\00:28:16.06 we say documents, it's written down. 00:28:16.09\00:28:18.69 So it can be preserved, you know, 00:28:18.73\00:28:20.50 things that are written down can be preserved, again, 00:28:20.53\00:28:22.10 if it's just talking and passed on and on and on, 00:28:22.13\00:28:24.60 I'm not telling what kind of mess things 00:28:24.63\00:28:25.97 would be in right now but it's not. 00:28:26.00\00:28:28.27 And it's much more reliable, what is written down 00:28:28.30\00:28:30.71 than the oral message is that you know, 00:28:30.74\00:28:32.67 that people repeat over and over and over. 00:28:32.71\00:28:34.18 Number four, the written word can be easily copied. 00:28:34.21\00:28:37.98 But we live in a different society 00:28:38.01\00:28:39.35 now, you know, there's a lot of things, 00:28:39.38\00:28:41.02 I think of audio and video and different things. 00:28:41.05\00:28:42.98 And most of you, forgive me here, 00:28:43.02\00:28:44.55 but almost like it's a written word, right? 00:28:44.59\00:28:46.35 Because it's what? It's recorded, is it not? 00:28:46.39\00:28:48.86 And you can go and you can play it over 00:28:48.89\00:28:50.26 but just for the sake of this lesson here, 00:28:50.29\00:28:51.96 I'm thinking of the written word. 00:28:51.99\00:28:53.33 God said, "Write these things down," 00:28:53.36\00:28:54.76 because they can be copied over and over and over, 00:28:54.80\00:28:59.13 you know, again, If you think, 00:28:59.17\00:29:00.77 if you just think, well, I've got audio and I got video, 00:29:00.80\00:29:03.34 you have to have power for that, right? 00:29:03.37\00:29:06.11 You have to have a player. 00:29:06.14\00:29:07.64 Here, if it's written down, 00:29:07.68\00:29:09.01 you can read it, you can just read it. 00:29:09.04\00:29:11.45 Number five, a person can speak 00:29:11.48\00:29:14.35 only to a certain number of people 00:29:14.38\00:29:17.15 at any given time, 00:29:17.19\00:29:18.52 you can only reach so many in one place at one time. 00:29:18.55\00:29:21.09 But with a written word, 00:29:21.12\00:29:22.62 right, you can read it to countless, 00:29:22.66\00:29:24.99 I love this countless readers around the world, 00:29:25.03\00:29:27.80 and to numerous generations, 00:29:27.83\00:29:30.83 you know, to me that, that's good. 00:29:30.87\00:29:32.20 Number six, and of course, 00:29:32.23\00:29:33.64 you can always read the Word of God 00:29:33.67\00:29:36.40 to someone who can't read. 00:29:36.44\00:29:38.97 So the Word of God simply, you know, goes on 00:29:39.01\00:29:40.84 and we can read it and there are many in the world 00:29:40.88\00:29:42.74 that they can't read or they can't see 00:29:42.78\00:29:44.61 and they need someone to read the Word of God. 00:29:44.65\00:29:46.75 Let's look at just several examples 00:29:46.78\00:29:48.95 where God said to write, you know, 00:29:48.98\00:29:52.12 and if it is important, 00:29:52.15\00:29:53.49 it'll come out in the Word of God. 00:29:53.52\00:29:54.92 Exodus 17:14, God said this, notice, 00:29:54.96\00:29:59.69 "And the Lord said unto Moses, 'Write this for a memorial.'" 00:29:59.73\00:30:05.03 That word interesting 00:30:05.07\00:30:06.40 and memorial is an interesting least word to me. 00:30:06.43\00:30:08.84 It's a record is it not? 00:30:08.87\00:30:10.51 A memorial is a record here 00:30:10.54\00:30:12.47 and it's in order to be able to keep it in remembrance, 00:30:12.51\00:30:16.71 to keep it into remembrance here, 00:30:16.75\00:30:18.18 write a memorial in a book. 00:30:18.21\00:30:21.15 And then notice what He says, rehearse. 00:30:21.18\00:30:23.59 Would that not be going over it? 00:30:23.62\00:30:25.45 You would go over after it's written in the book, 00:30:25.49\00:30:27.32 then we go over, it's like, 00:30:27.36\00:30:28.69 many time we read a passage of scripture, 00:30:28.72\00:30:30.06 and then you take time to, 00:30:30.09\00:30:31.49 you know, go into detail about it to explain it, 00:30:31.53\00:30:34.26 line upon line, and so on and so forth. 00:30:34.30\00:30:35.93 So He said, "Write it in the book, 00:30:35.96\00:30:37.30 rehearse it in the ears of Joshua." 00:30:37.33\00:30:39.07 And Joshua would certainly be telling the people. 00:30:39.10\00:30:40.67 Now, there are some critics, there's always critics right, 00:30:40.70\00:30:43.77 in the world, no matter what you do, there's critics. 00:30:43.81\00:30:45.94 You know, some critics pretty much laughed at the idea 00:30:45.97\00:30:49.64 that Moses could have written in Hebrew 00:30:49.68\00:30:52.08 during the second millennial, right, BC? 00:30:52.11\00:30:55.62 Some critics said," No, that's not possible. 00:30:55.65\00:30:57.39 There's no way in which that could be done." 00:30:57.42\00:30:59.09 But first, you know, 00:30:59.12\00:31:00.46 but the first alphabetic form of writing was invented, 00:31:00.49\00:31:04.46 notice this, maybe you knew this, 00:31:04.49\00:31:05.83 maybe you didn't, it's kind of interesting. 00:31:05.86\00:31:07.40 I didn't realize it till I studied this, but it was, 00:31:07.43\00:31:10.37 writing was invented 00:31:10.40\00:31:11.73 in the very region of Mount Sinai. 00:31:11.77\00:31:15.04 It's interesting where Moses received 00:31:15.07\00:31:17.31 the commands of God, isn't that right? 00:31:17.34\00:31:20.38 And God wrote them down, did He not with His own finger? 00:31:20.41\00:31:24.98 And notice that is in the area of Mount Sinai 00:31:25.01\00:31:27.32 where Moses learned to write the new script. 00:31:27.35\00:31:31.55 There's a reason for that 00:31:31.59\00:31:33.02 is why God says to write these things down, no doubt, 00:31:33.05\00:31:37.26 the invention of the alphabetic writing shortly before. 00:31:37.29\00:31:41.43 Now, this was just shortly before the Exodus. 00:31:41.46\00:31:44.27 Now, was that in the design of God? 00:31:44.30\00:31:47.10 Or was it just happened that way? 00:31:47.14\00:31:48.74 God designed it, did He not? Absolutely. 00:31:48.77\00:31:51.04 It's a providential gift. 00:31:51.07\00:31:53.74 You know, God gave it to us and there was 00:31:53.78\00:31:56.04 just as much as far as I'm concerned about the, 00:31:56.08\00:31:58.45 wasn't that the printing press as it were moving type 00:31:58.48\00:32:01.32 just before the Reformation? 00:32:01.35\00:32:03.55 Was that just a coincidence? Absolutely not. 00:32:03.59\00:32:05.59 God wanted this message to go, write it down, get it out is 00:32:05.62\00:32:08.86 what He says to us today. 00:32:08.89\00:32:10.39 So God intended for the Bible to be the book, 00:32:10.43\00:32:13.90 I like it, the book for the people. 00:32:13.93\00:32:15.36 That's right. The book for the people. 00:32:15.40\00:32:17.17 And by these miracles, 00:32:17.20\00:32:18.73 it could never have been written, 00:32:18.77\00:32:21.14 notice, in the complicated, there is a couple of forms, 00:32:21.17\00:32:23.67 whether or not, the hieroglyphics. 00:32:23.71\00:32:25.31 I mean, if you look that 00:32:25.34\00:32:26.68 you can hardly make out, I can't. 00:32:26.71\00:32:28.74 There may be those who can do that. 00:32:28.78\00:32:31.01 But you know, what a form of writing that was. 00:32:31.05\00:32:33.11 It had at least 1,000 distinct characters. 00:32:33.15\00:32:38.75 And I say our ABCs if I'm wrong, there's 26? 00:32:38.79\00:32:42.76 That's right. They're 26. 00:32:42.79\00:32:46.90 We certainly say so. There's 26. 00:32:46.93\00:32:48.63 But I'm saying they that we call major. 00:32:48.66\00:32:50.47 They're all important. 00:32:50.50\00:32:51.83 There's 1,000 of these in that so it's very complicated. 00:32:51.87\00:32:54.94 Then you had the cuneiform, 00:32:54.97\00:32:57.47 you know, along a cuneiform write, 00:32:57.51\00:32:59.27 which was the word comes from wedge shaped, 00:32:59.31\00:33:03.24 what was the alphabet? 00:33:03.28\00:33:05.85 You say it was? Character. 00:33:05.88\00:33:07.28 Characters, you know, what that wrote with. 00:33:07.32\00:33:10.59 And how complicated you see that would have been 00:33:10.62\00:33:12.95 because it'd be difficult for us to make it out, 00:33:12.99\00:33:15.06 yet God foreseeing all these things and He said, 00:33:15.09\00:33:17.93 "Write it down." 00:33:17.96\00:33:19.66 So we need to remember write it down. 00:33:19.69\00:33:21.73 And then we're finding out 00:33:21.76\00:33:23.10 from this lesson of the scripture 00:33:23.13\00:33:24.47 we realize constitutes the oldest 00:33:24.50\00:33:26.53 and the most complete historical record 00:33:26.57\00:33:30.51 of the human race 00:33:30.54\00:33:31.97 and certainly God's plan to rescue man from the enemy 00:33:32.01\00:33:35.64 and we count on that, 00:33:35.68\00:33:37.01 we thank God for that, do we not? 00:33:37.05\00:33:39.05 That God is in charge. 00:33:39.08\00:33:40.42 Joshua 24:26, till time bring down, 00:33:40.45\00:33:42.08 it said, Joshua, again, he wrote, Joshua wrote. 00:33:42.12\00:33:45.79 Why did Joshua write? 00:33:45.82\00:33:47.16 Because God's told him to write. 00:33:47.19\00:33:48.52 When God tells us to do something, 00:33:48.56\00:33:49.89 we just need to do it, isn't that right? 00:33:49.92\00:33:51.26 He said, "Write these words in the book of the law.' 00:33:51.29\00:33:53.60 And he took a great stone, 00:33:53.63\00:33:54.96 he set it up there under the oak 00:33:55.00\00:33:56.93 which was by the sanctuary of God.'" 00:33:56.97\00:33:58.83 Joshua wrote the words of the covenant, 00:33:58.87\00:34:01.57 the statutes and the judgment. 00:34:01.60\00:34:04.47 You know, all we have to do, 00:34:04.51\00:34:06.27 again, we're seeing right through there 00:34:06.31\00:34:07.64 someone mentioned a while ago about the unity of Scripture. 00:34:07.68\00:34:10.28 Praise God for the unity of Scripture, 00:34:10.31\00:34:11.91 the power of the Holy Spirit that's in charge. 00:34:11.95\00:34:14.28 And the Bible says this, you know, in Acts Chapter 5, 00:34:14.32\00:34:16.55 somewhere around there it said, 00:34:16.58\00:34:17.92 "The Holy Spirit is given to those who obey Him." 00:34:17.95\00:34:22.22 And so God has given the Holy Spirit out. 00:34:22.26\00:34:24.33 There's going to be unity of the Holy Spirit, 00:34:24.36\00:34:26.49 unity of truth, the unity of this message. 00:34:26.53\00:34:29.83 And I'm praying that as Jesus prayed, you know, 00:34:29.86\00:34:32.97 He prayed we may be one and I believe 00:34:33.00\00:34:36.10 even our message we have to get, 00:34:36.14\00:34:38.24 we need to become more one on message, you know, 00:34:38.27\00:34:40.84 and know what truth is, 00:34:40.88\00:34:42.71 be able to give it to the world, 00:34:42.74\00:34:44.15 not in every wind of doctrine, 00:34:44.18\00:34:45.98 but give it out as God says, write it down. 00:34:46.01\00:34:49.18 So every chance you get, write it down. 00:34:49.22\00:34:50.55 Write it down. Thank you. 00:34:50.59\00:34:53.99 Well, I'd like to say something, 00:34:54.02\00:34:55.36 you know, the Bible, 00:34:55.39\00:34:58.83 divinely inspired, God has protected the Bible. 00:34:58.86\00:35:02.50 God has preserved the Bible miraculously 00:35:02.53\00:35:05.53 today we have the Word of God. 00:35:05.57\00:35:08.67 And there are stories of how God 00:35:08.70\00:35:11.54 has preserved the Holy Scriptures. 00:35:11.57\00:35:13.01 We have confidence today 00:35:13.04\00:35:14.91 that the scriptures you read today 00:35:14.94\00:35:17.05 are the Holy inspired Word of God. 00:35:17.08\00:35:19.81 So praise the Lord for that. 00:35:19.85\00:35:21.25 I have Wednesday's part and we're looking at a parallel 00:35:21.28\00:35:24.52 between Christ and the Scripture. 00:35:24.55\00:35:26.82 Now this is very interesting 00:35:26.86\00:35:28.19 because you can find Jesus Christ 00:35:28.22\00:35:29.56 in all the books of the Bible. 00:35:29.59\00:35:31.93 And so we have John 1:14. 00:35:31.96\00:35:37.47 In John 1:14, we have this scripture, 00:35:37.50\00:35:40.60 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, 00:35:40.64\00:35:44.74 and we beheld His glory, 00:35:44.77\00:35:47.18 the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, 00:35:47.21\00:35:50.38 full of grace and truth." 00:35:50.41\00:35:53.38 So we have here Jesus Christ, 00:35:53.42\00:35:55.75 the divine Son of God became a human being. 00:35:55.78\00:36:01.59 And so when you consider that 00:36:01.62\00:36:03.32 because we're looking at parallels 00:36:03.36\00:36:04.69 between Christ and the Scripture. 00:36:04.73\00:36:06.80 Christ divine becomes human flesh. 00:36:06.83\00:36:10.87 He did not cease to be divine when He became human. 00:36:10.90\00:36:13.80 But consider that the scriptures come directly 00:36:13.84\00:36:16.94 from God divine given to human beings, 00:36:16.97\00:36:20.28 human flesh communicated to us. 00:36:20.31\00:36:23.78 And as we have already heard before, 00:36:23.81\00:36:26.88 God inspired these people to write these things. 00:36:26.92\00:36:30.22 And so as we look at different parallels, 00:36:30.25\00:36:32.82 let me give you another one that is very interesting. 00:36:32.85\00:36:36.16 In John 8:31 and 32, 00:36:36.19\00:36:38.59 I would like to ask someone 00:36:38.63\00:36:39.96 to read John 8:31 and 32 for us. 00:36:40.00\00:36:43.87 Here we have a scripture about Jesus Christ, 00:36:43.90\00:36:47.47 and we're going to look at a parallel. 00:36:47.50\00:36:49.27 Who would like to read? I got it here. 00:36:49.30\00:36:50.81 John 8:31 and 32. 00:36:50.84\00:36:53.01 "Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, 00:36:53.04\00:36:55.68 'If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 00:36:55.71\00:36:59.25 And you shall know the truth, 00:36:59.28\00:37:00.72 and the truth shall make you free.'" 00:37:00.75\00:37:03.18 Amen. Thank you very much. 00:37:03.22\00:37:04.89 So we hear that the truth, if you abide in the truth, 00:37:04.92\00:37:11.39 it will make you free. 00:37:11.43\00:37:13.23 The Bible, John 17:17, 00:37:13.26\00:37:15.76 sanctify them by Your truth, Your word is truth. 00:37:15.80\00:37:21.30 Thy word is truth." So the Bible is truth. 00:37:21.34\00:37:24.24 Also, consider the words of Jesus 00:37:24.27\00:37:26.57 in John 14:6, 00:37:26.61\00:37:28.18 "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, 00:37:28.21\00:37:30.98 the truth, and the life. 00:37:31.01\00:37:33.31 No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" 00:37:33.35\00:37:36.52 So in the scriptures we have that it is the truth 00:37:36.55\00:37:39.82 and Jesus is the truth. 00:37:39.85\00:37:41.19 We see some parallels in the scriptures 00:37:41.22\00:37:43.73 concerning Jesus and the scriptures. 00:37:43.76\00:37:47.00 Now, here's another one that I like to bring before you 00:37:47.03\00:37:50.90 and that is Psalms 119. 00:37:50.93\00:37:53.87 Pastor Lomacang, if you will help us 00:37:53.90\00:37:55.40 out with John Chapter, 00:37:55.44\00:37:56.91 I mean, sorry, Psalms 119: 105. Okay. 00:37:56.94\00:38:01.74 You may be able to quote it from memory. 00:38:01.78\00:38:06.82 Yeah. Soon as you learn it is. 00:38:06.85\00:38:11.05 "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." 00:38:11.09\00:38:15.62 Amen. 00:38:15.66\00:38:17.26 So we have that the Word of God 00:38:17.29\00:38:18.89 is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. 00:38:18.93\00:38:21.60 Now consider Jesus. 00:38:21.63\00:38:23.00 In John 9:5, "Jesus said, 'As long as I am in the world, 00:38:23.03\00:38:27.97 I am the light of the world.'" 00:38:28.00\00:38:30.91 The Scripture's the light, 00:38:30.94\00:38:32.54 Jesus is the light of the world. 00:38:32.57\00:38:34.84 Now, in John Chapter 1, 00:38:34.88\00:38:38.31 John wrote some very interesting words 00:38:38.35\00:38:41.08 concerning Jesus Christ. 00:38:41.12\00:38:43.79 And beginning in verse 6, "There was a man sent from God, 00:38:43.82\00:38:48.66 whose name was John. 00:38:48.69\00:38:50.63 This man came for a witness to bear witness of the Light, 00:38:50.66\00:38:56.36 that all through him might believe, 00:38:56.40\00:38:58.67 he was not that light but was sent to bear witness 00:38:58.70\00:39:02.60 of that light." 00:39:02.64\00:39:03.97 This light is Jesus. 00:39:04.01\00:39:06.84 And now verse 9 says, 00:39:06.88\00:39:08.21 "That was the true light, which gives light 00:39:08.24\00:39:11.81 to every man coming into the world." 00:39:11.85\00:39:15.82 So Jesus lights everybody. 00:39:15.85\00:39:20.12 He gives light to the whole world. 00:39:20.16\00:39:22.32 What you do with the light, it's your decision. 00:39:22.36\00:39:24.83 But He is the light that lights every single person. 00:39:24.86\00:39:29.60 And so we have these different parallels 00:39:29.63\00:39:31.77 you see in the scriptures concerning Jesus 00:39:31.80\00:39:34.20 and concerning the scriptures, they are of divine origin. 00:39:34.24\00:39:37.71 Jesus is divine. 00:39:37.74\00:39:39.37 And so when you study the Bible, 00:39:39.41\00:39:41.34 you're going to see 00:39:41.38\00:39:42.71 all these wonderful things coming out. 00:39:42.74\00:39:45.28 And so I want to encourage you to read the scriptures daily. 00:39:45.31\00:39:48.58 Amen. 00:39:48.62\00:39:49.95 You know, sometimes people 00:39:49.98\00:39:53.46 open the Bible for the first time 00:39:53.49\00:39:54.82 when they get to church. 00:39:54.86\00:39:57.29 Oh, that's tragic. 00:39:57.33\00:40:00.60 Don't wait till you get to church 00:40:00.63\00:40:01.96 to open the Bible when the pastor says, 00:40:02.00\00:40:03.43 "Let's turn your Bibles to John 14:6. 00:40:03.47\00:40:05.67 No. 00:40:05.70\00:40:07.04 Read the Bible daily because God wants to feed you daily. 00:40:07.07\00:40:10.47 Pastor Lomacang recently was preaching. 00:40:10.51\00:40:12.44 And he said, "What would it be, 00:40:12.47\00:40:14.44 if you took the study of God's Word 00:40:14.48\00:40:17.45 like you would do eating? 00:40:17.48\00:40:19.31 Would you only eat once a week or once... 00:40:19.35\00:40:22.38 Once a week one hour when you're in church," 00:40:22.42\00:40:25.09 like you know, you're studying the Bible, 00:40:25.12\00:40:26.72 you open the Bible, 00:40:26.76\00:40:29.36 then it's the Bible is going to feed your soul. 00:40:29.39\00:40:32.99 And so I encourage you to read the scriptures 00:40:33.03\00:40:36.10 and live by it thus saith the Lord. 00:40:36.13\00:40:39.10 You know, I remember a gentleman 00:40:39.13\00:40:40.47 that called 3ABN once, 00:40:40.50\00:40:41.84 he wasn't in agreement with something 00:40:41.87\00:40:43.81 that was being presented at 3ABN. 00:40:43.84\00:40:46.04 So we started talking about the topic. 00:40:46.07\00:40:48.58 And I said, "Well, look, you know, 00:40:48.61\00:40:49.94 the Bible says this, 00:40:49.98\00:40:51.31 and I read to him the scriptures." 00:40:51.35\00:40:53.68 And he said this, that was a surprise to me. 00:40:53.72\00:40:55.68 He said, "Well, I know what the Bible says, 00:40:55.72\00:40:58.69 but the Holy Spirit told me..." 00:40:58.72\00:41:01.69 I said, "Wait, wait. 00:41:01.72\00:41:04.19 The Holy Spirit is not going to contradict 00:41:04.23\00:41:06.90 what the Bible says." 00:41:06.93\00:41:08.26 That's right. 00:41:08.30\00:41:09.63 Because the Holy Spirit inspired the scriptures. 00:41:09.66\00:41:11.57 How is he going to contradict what the Bible says? 00:41:11.60\00:41:14.24 No, you live by it, thus saith the Lord. 00:41:14.27\00:41:16.34 And it reminded of the Bereans, you remember the Bereans? 00:41:16.37\00:41:19.14 They heard the sermons, and then they went back home 00:41:19.17\00:41:22.34 and searched the scriptures 00:41:22.38\00:41:23.75 to see if these things were true. 00:41:23.78\00:41:25.91 This we should do today. 00:41:25.95\00:41:27.32 And so the scriptures study 00:41:27.35\00:41:29.45 and led by a thus saith the Lord. 00:41:29.48\00:41:32.35 Now, I want to, of course, 00:41:32.39\00:41:35.02 say that when you're looking at these parallels, 00:41:35.06\00:41:37.96 you know, there's a limit to these parallels. 00:41:37.99\00:41:40.30 Jesus Christ is not the script or the written word, 00:41:40.33\00:41:44.00 He is the living word. 00:41:44.03\00:41:45.50 That's right. 00:41:45.53\00:41:46.94 So, in this book, 00:41:46.97\00:41:51.17 Testimonies to the Church, volume six... 00:41:51.21\00:41:54.94 Oh wait, I wanted to say something else before reading. 00:41:54.98\00:41:59.61 God wants to speak to you through the scriptures, 00:41:59.65\00:42:02.92 and this is why I'm bringing this testimony, 00:42:02.95\00:42:05.09 volume six, page 393. 00:42:05.12\00:42:08.22 Notice. 00:42:08.26\00:42:09.59 "The Bible is God's voice speaking to us. 00:42:09.62\00:42:14.63 Just as surely as though we could hear it with our ears. 00:42:14.66\00:42:20.40 If we realized this, 00:42:20.44\00:42:22.74 with what all would we open God's word, 00:42:22.77\00:42:26.21 and with what earnestness would we search its precepts? 00:42:26.24\00:42:30.65 The reading and contemplation of the Scriptures 00:42:30.68\00:42:33.72 would be regarded as an audience 00:42:33.75\00:42:36.05 with the Infinite." 00:42:36.08\00:42:37.79 Isn't that marvelous? This is marvelous. 00:42:37.82\00:42:41.36 And so I want to encourage you to consider that 00:42:41.39\00:42:45.26 when you open the scriptures, 00:42:45.29\00:42:50.67 the Holy Spirit is ready to help you 00:42:50.70\00:42:52.97 understand the scriptures. 00:42:53.00\00:42:55.97 And this is why we need 00:42:56.00\00:42:57.34 to open the scriptures with prayer and say, 00:42:57.37\00:42:59.84 "Lord, I am placing myself in Your hands, 00:42:59.87\00:43:03.55 I want You to teach me," because when God, 00:43:03.58\00:43:06.92 when we do this, 00:43:06.95\00:43:08.28 we are opening our minds to understand the scriptures. 00:43:08.32\00:43:11.62 And I know everyone here can say, 00:43:11.65\00:43:15.09 "I've read this verse before 00:43:15.12\00:43:17.76 and I've discovered something new 00:43:17.79\00:43:19.59 that I've never seen before." 00:43:19.63\00:43:21.56 The Bible has knowledge and wisdom 00:43:21.60\00:43:25.63 that is going to last us, 00:43:25.67\00:43:27.50 not only our lifetime, but throughout eternity. 00:43:27.54\00:43:29.80 We'll be searching the scriptures, 00:43:29.84\00:43:31.94 because it comes from, 00:43:31.97\00:43:34.68 it's of divine origin, and it's exhaustless. 00:43:34.71\00:43:37.71 It will not say, 00:43:37.75\00:43:39.08 "Well, I know everything there is to know." 00:43:39.11\00:43:42.25 No, God has infinite amount of things to show us. 00:43:42.28\00:43:45.85 You know, it's interesting 00:43:45.89\00:43:47.22 that one of the scriptures that to me, 00:43:47.26\00:43:49.82 I guess I could say, 00:43:49.86\00:43:51.19 I could learn more from is John 3:16. 00:43:51.23\00:43:54.10 And so this scripture has so much packed in there 00:43:54.13\00:43:59.30 that you could study and study 00:43:59.33\00:44:02.00 and still discover marvelous things. 00:44:02.04\00:44:05.21 So in the book, there's a great controversy. 00:44:05.24\00:44:10.71 Well, Counsels to Parents and Teachers, 00:44:10.75\00:44:12.58 I'm just going to read one little part here. 00:44:12.61\00:44:14.82 "There's nothing more calculated 00:44:14.85\00:44:16.52 to energize the mind and strengthen the intellect 00:44:16.55\00:44:20.79 than the study of the Word of God. 00:44:20.82\00:44:23.69 No other book is so potent to elevate the thoughts, 00:44:23.73\00:44:26.09 to give vigor to the faculties, 00:44:26.13\00:44:27.80 as the broad, ennobling truths of the Bible." 00:44:27.83\00:44:32.50 And I encourage you to read the scriptures. 00:44:32.53\00:44:35.00 Well, I wish I had time to share 00:44:35.04\00:44:36.37 one more thing with you, but we don't. 00:44:36.40\00:44:37.97 We're going to have to wait for next time. 00:44:38.01\00:44:39.67 But study the scriptures, 00:44:39.71\00:44:41.38 they are going to make you wise unto salvation. 00:44:41.41\00:44:45.38 This is the book that's going to lead you 00:44:45.41\00:44:48.48 closer to the Lord, study it like no other book. 00:44:48.52\00:44:52.35 Praise the Lord. 00:44:52.39\00:44:53.72 Break out the fire extinguisher. 00:44:53.76\00:44:55.12 Brother's on fire over here. Amen. 00:44:55.16\00:44:57.23 I need some of that fire now 00:44:57.26\00:44:58.59 because this next lesson on Thursday, 00:44:58.63\00:45:01.36 Understanding the Bible in Faith. 00:45:01.40\00:45:04.13 This is probably, I mean all of these things, 00:45:04.17\00:45:06.70 every single aspect that we brought out 00:45:06.74\00:45:08.24 so far as I'm listening each one of you talk, 00:45:08.27\00:45:11.37 it's just powerful and essential to understanding 00:45:11.41\00:45:14.68 and interpreting Scripture correctly. 00:45:14.71\00:45:16.98 And Thursday's lesson, 00:45:17.01\00:45:18.35 Understanding the Bible in Faith, 00:45:18.38\00:45:19.81 we must approach the Scripture, 00:45:19.85\00:45:21.45 we must receive the Scripture in faith. 00:45:21.48\00:45:23.99 And that's what this lesson is about. 00:45:24.02\00:45:25.35 I want to take us directly to 2 Timothy 3:14-17. 00:45:25.39\00:45:30.99 The lesson I don't think particularly brings out 00:45:31.03\00:45:33.06 a couple of these texts, 00:45:33.09\00:45:34.43 but I added verses 14 and 15 in here, 00:45:34.46\00:45:36.73 just because I think it sets a good foundation 00:45:36.77\00:45:39.37 for verse 16 00:45:39.40\00:45:40.94 because Paul is writing to Timothy. 00:45:40.97\00:45:43.07 And, of course, we know that while this instruction 00:45:43.10\00:45:45.41 was given to Timothy, we take this instruction too. 00:45:45.44\00:45:47.54 This is just as much for us as it is for Timothy. 00:45:47.58\00:45:50.38 And so notice what 2 Timothy 3:14-17 says, 00:45:50.41\00:45:54.48 Paul says, "But you must continue in the things 00:45:54.52\00:45:58.05 which you have learned and been assured of knowing 00:45:58.09\00:46:02.22 from whom you have learned, and that from childhood 00:46:02.26\00:46:06.29 you have known the Holy Scriptures, 00:46:06.33\00:46:09.90 which are," and I love this part, 00:46:09.93\00:46:11.33 "which are able to make you wise," notice this, 00:46:11.37\00:46:14.54 "for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus." 00:46:14.57\00:46:19.91 So I like that which is able to make you wise 00:46:19.94\00:46:22.48 for salvation through faith. 00:46:22.51\00:46:24.58 So it's through faith that we must receive this, 00:46:24.61\00:46:27.25 according to here, he says, 00:46:27.28\00:46:29.38 which is in Christ Jesus, but then that famous verse, 00:46:29.42\00:46:32.52 famous text in verse 16, how much Scripture? 00:46:32.55\00:46:34.92 All. 00:46:34.96\00:46:36.29 He says all Scripture was given by inspiration of God, 00:46:36.32\00:46:39.89 and it's profitable for doctrine, 00:46:39.93\00:46:41.93 for reproof, for correction, 00:46:41.96\00:46:44.27 for instruction in righteousness, 00:46:44.30\00:46:46.20 that the men of God may be complete, 00:46:46.23\00:46:48.37 thoroughly equipped for every good work. 00:46:48.40\00:46:51.47 But this text does not really mean anything 00:46:51.51\00:46:55.14 to the skeptic mind. 00:46:55.18\00:46:56.98 It doesn't really mean anything who takes a methodological, 00:46:57.01\00:47:02.15 doubting, approach to the Word of God 00:47:02.18\00:47:05.12 because you can read all of this. 00:47:05.15\00:47:06.99 And if you do not receive it in faith, 00:47:07.02\00:47:09.22 then is the Bible going to be profitable for doctrine 00:47:09.26\00:47:12.16 to a person who's skeptic? 00:47:12.19\00:47:14.06 Who does not receive it in faith? 00:47:14.10\00:47:15.43 Are you going to receive the reproof humbly 00:47:15.46\00:47:17.53 that the Scripture is giving you 00:47:17.57\00:47:18.90 if you're not receiving that word in faith? 00:47:18.93\00:47:21.07 Absolutely not. 00:47:21.10\00:47:22.44 I used to be the biggest skeptic 00:47:22.47\00:47:23.81 in the world years ago. 00:47:23.84\00:47:25.17 I was raised in the Christian church, 00:47:25.21\00:47:27.71 but I found myself often really struggling 00:47:27.74\00:47:32.35 in my walk with the Lord 00:47:32.38\00:47:33.75 because I didn't really understand faith. 00:47:33.78\00:47:36.48 I didn't really understand what that meant, 00:47:36.52\00:47:37.89 I didn't really understand the reality of 00:47:37.92\00:47:39.92 what a Christian must experience 00:47:39.95\00:47:42.39 in approaching the Word of God 00:47:42.42\00:47:43.76 and receiving the Word of God in faith. 00:47:43.79\00:47:45.39 And I would question every little thing, 00:47:45.43\00:47:47.40 I was one of the biggest skeptics. 00:47:47.43\00:47:49.16 I needed a proof text for everything, you know, 00:47:49.20\00:47:51.80 and you got people like this 00:47:51.83\00:47:53.17 who approach the study of the word, 00:47:53.20\00:47:55.20 the reading of the word, 00:47:55.24\00:47:56.57 the understanding of the Word of God, 00:47:56.60\00:47:58.07 they question every little thing 00:47:58.11\00:47:59.71 because they have to have that proof for every little thing. 00:47:59.74\00:48:02.14 For instance, did the Lord really create 00:48:02.18\00:48:04.35 the world in six literal, 24 hour periods? 00:48:04.38\00:48:07.42 I mean, can we really trust that, right? 00:48:07.45\00:48:09.25 You know, did God really split the Red Sea? 00:48:09.28\00:48:13.09 You know, the actual sea itself? 00:48:13.12\00:48:14.52 Or was it the Sea of Reeds, which is about a six inch, 00:48:14.56\00:48:18.26 you know, body of water, you know. 00:48:18.29\00:48:21.10 It's powerful when you really consider all of this. 00:48:21.13\00:48:24.27 We have to learn to receive the Word of God in faith. 00:48:24.30\00:48:27.40 If God provided proof for everything 00:48:27.44\00:48:29.50 and evidence for everything, would we exercise faith? 00:48:29.54\00:48:32.67 Absolutely not. 00:48:32.71\00:48:34.04 And so that's why I put in here a note here, 00:48:34.08\00:48:36.85 very simple, but very profound. 00:48:36.88\00:48:38.71 Jesus should be our prime example. 00:48:38.75\00:48:40.52 Amen. Amen. 00:48:40.55\00:48:41.88 Now, that's interesting to say that 00:48:41.92\00:48:43.25 because most people are going to hear me say that, 00:48:43.28\00:48:45.09 Jesus is our prime example and say, "What? 00:48:45.12\00:48:46.62 I mean, come on. 00:48:46.65\00:48:47.99 Jesus is the Son of God, right?" 00:48:48.02\00:48:49.36 Of course, He has faith. 00:48:49.39\00:48:50.73 He's the epicenter of faith, right? 00:48:50.76\00:48:52.09 But notice, 00:48:52.13\00:48:53.46 take in consideration Luke 2:52, 00:48:53.50\00:48:55.63 the Bible says in Luke 2:52, says 00:48:55.66\00:48:59.77 "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature 00:48:59.80\00:49:03.10 and in favor with God and men." 00:49:03.14\00:49:05.14 Now why would I read that text, and why is it pertinent 00:49:05.17\00:49:07.81 to this particular subject of faith? 00:49:07.84\00:49:10.08 Jesus increased in wisdom 00:49:10.11\00:49:11.71 and stature in favor with God and men. 00:49:11.75\00:49:13.95 When He was robed in flesh and He came to this earth, 00:49:13.98\00:49:16.62 He left His divinity, 00:49:16.65\00:49:17.99 He left his pre-knowledge behind. 00:49:18.02\00:49:20.42 And literally, we're told in Desire of Ages Chapter 7, 00:49:20.46\00:49:23.86 that Jesus had to relearn everything. 00:49:23.89\00:49:26.90 Wow. 00:49:26.93\00:49:28.26 That's powerful, your mind begin to fail. 00:49:28.30\00:49:30.37 He had to relearn everything, He had to relearn who He was, 00:49:30.40\00:49:32.77 why He's come and that had to taken 00:49:32.80\00:49:35.64 an amazing amount of faith. 00:49:35.67\00:49:37.34 Therefore, notice 00:49:37.37\00:49:38.71 when His mother was teaching Him 00:49:38.74\00:49:40.34 like all children, consider the faith of a child 00:49:40.38\00:49:42.88 we should have as Jesus said, 00:49:42.91\00:49:44.28 we should have the faith of a little child 00:49:44.31\00:49:45.75 because a child, I mean, they strive, 00:49:45.78\00:49:48.22 they long to receive the parent's word in faith. 00:49:48.25\00:49:52.32 They believe in their parent, they trust in their parent. 00:49:52.35\00:49:55.19 And so like all children, He accepted Christ, 00:49:55.22\00:49:57.59 He accepted by faith that things 00:49:57.63\00:49:59.53 His mother taught to Him of the kingdom of God. 00:49:59.56\00:50:02.26 And you notice this, 00:50:02.30\00:50:03.63 not being able to physically see 00:50:03.67\00:50:05.03 His heavenly Father, again, 00:50:05.07\00:50:07.27 that concept of faith, you know, not seeing, 00:50:07.30\00:50:09.37 not, being able to physically see His father, 00:50:09.40\00:50:11.07 it was by faith that He received instruction 00:50:11.11\00:50:13.71 and guidance when His father spoke to Him, 00:50:13.74\00:50:15.98 He, while He might have heard a voice, 00:50:16.01\00:50:18.05 while there were angels ministering to Him, 00:50:18.08\00:50:20.45 He had to receive that word by faith. 00:50:20.48\00:50:23.05 We had to trust that this is really from My Father, 00:50:23.08\00:50:25.45 and this is for Me. 00:50:25.49\00:50:27.16 So we cannot talk about faith in the Word of God 00:50:27.19\00:50:29.96 unless we go to Hebrews Chapter 11. 00:50:29.99\00:50:31.63 We got to go to that faith chapter. 00:50:31.66\00:50:32.99 So let's go there. 00:50:33.03\00:50:34.36 I may not be able to cover all of what it is 00:50:34.40\00:50:35.73 that I have here in my notes, 00:50:35.76\00:50:37.10 but we're going to highlight some things here that 00:50:37.13\00:50:38.47 I think are foundational to understanding 00:50:38.50\00:50:40.94 how to receive the Word of God in faith. 00:50:40.97\00:50:44.97 So Hebrews Chapter 11, 00:50:45.01\00:50:46.34 we're going to start right there in verse 1. 00:50:46.37\00:50:49.74 Because I think the thesis statement 00:50:49.78\00:50:51.68 of this whole passage here verses 1 and verse 3, 00:50:51.71\00:50:55.38 is just powerful and understanding 00:50:55.42\00:50:57.25 how important faith is. 00:50:57.29\00:50:58.62 So now verse 1 says, 00:50:58.65\00:50:59.99 "Now faith is the substance of things 00:51:00.02\00:51:02.69 hoped for the evidence of things not seen." 00:51:02.72\00:51:06.49 And when I read that text, I think of, you know, 00:51:06.53\00:51:08.36 the encounter that 00:51:08.40\00:51:09.73 Jesus had with Philip on resurrection 00:51:09.76\00:51:11.33 or excuse me was it Thomas on Resurrection Day. 00:51:11.37\00:51:14.64 Thomas is like you know, I see Jesus standing there. 00:51:14.67\00:51:16.40 Is it really Him or perhaps it's a ghost, 00:51:16.44\00:51:18.47 you know, I don't know if that's really Him?" 00:51:18.51\00:51:19.91 And Jesus is like, "Come on, man. 00:51:19.94\00:51:21.28 It's me, right?" 00:51:21.31\00:51:22.64 I'm going to have to put my, 00:51:22.68\00:51:24.15 my hand had to physically tangibly 00:51:24.18\00:51:25.98 touch this guy to be able to tell that it's Jesus. 00:51:26.01\00:51:28.38 And Jesus is like, okay, 00:51:28.42\00:51:29.75 but then He tells him something vitally important. 00:51:29.78\00:51:31.62 He says, bless, you know, you believe 00:51:31.65\00:51:33.36 because you have seen 00:51:33.39\00:51:34.72 but blessed are those who believe in Me, 00:51:34.76\00:51:36.79 who have not seen, right? 00:51:36.83\00:51:38.76 Faith receiving by faith, the word of the Lord. 00:51:38.79\00:51:41.56 Verse 2 says "For by it, 00:51:41.60\00:51:43.57 the elders obtained a good testimony." 00:51:43.60\00:51:45.90 And then I love verse 3 here it says, 00:51:45.93\00:51:47.27 "By faith, we understand that 00:51:47.30\00:51:49.47 the words were framed by the Word of God, 00:51:49.50\00:51:52.51 so that the things which are seen 00:51:52.54\00:51:54.58 were not made of things which are visible." 00:51:54.61\00:51:58.95 And then the Bible begins here in the 11th Chapter of Hebrews 00:51:58.98\00:52:02.62 and giving us some examples. 00:52:02.65\00:52:04.05 And I may not mention all of these but think of Abel. 00:52:04.09\00:52:07.36 Verse 4 says, "Abel offered to God 00:52:07.39\00:52:09.42 a more excellent sacrifice than Cain." 00:52:09.46\00:52:11.83 You know, he offered that 00:52:11.86\00:52:13.56 based on his trust in the word of the Lord 00:52:13.60\00:52:15.63 that came to him and said, do this. 00:52:15.66\00:52:18.40 You see it brought the opposite in Cain. 00:52:18.43\00:52:20.07 Cain did not trust in the word of the Lord. 00:52:20.10\00:52:21.60 He did not have that faith 00:52:21.64\00:52:23.10 when he heard the word of God give him instruction 00:52:23.14\00:52:25.71 on what type of sacrifice to bring. 00:52:25.74\00:52:28.08 And so we see a drastic difference there. 00:52:28.11\00:52:29.91 Abel exercised faith. 00:52:29.94\00:52:31.45 He received faith, 00:52:31.48\00:52:33.08 received the word of God in faith. 00:52:33.11\00:52:34.85 Also think of Enoch it says Enoch was taken away 00:52:34.88\00:52:37.19 so that he did not see death, even though 00:52:37.22\00:52:39.35 the Bible says that he walked and talked with the Lord. 00:52:39.39\00:52:41.39 I mean, he had to trust in His Word, 00:52:41.42\00:52:42.99 he had to receive the Word of God in faith, 00:52:43.02\00:52:44.99 you know, is this guy really going to do 00:52:45.03\00:52:47.26 what he says he's going to do? 00:52:47.30\00:52:48.63 You know, is all of this going to come 00:52:48.66\00:52:50.40 to pass as the Lord has said. 00:52:50.43\00:52:52.00 I think of Noah, Noah being a... 00:52:52.03\00:52:53.97 That is verse 7. 00:52:54.00\00:52:55.34 By faith it says, Noah, being divinely warned 00:52:55.37\00:52:57.07 of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear." 00:52:57.11\00:53:00.54 And so Noah had to have faith for 100, that's a lot of faith. 00:53:00.58\00:53:04.61 One hundred and twenty years of preaching, 00:53:04.65\00:53:06.41 you know, he believed in the Word of God, 00:53:06.45\00:53:08.28 he received it in faith, and he preached it 00:53:08.32\00:53:10.82 according to the Word of God. 00:53:10.85\00:53:12.32 I think probably the prime example 00:53:12.35\00:53:15.02 that just gives me chills when I think about this, 00:53:15.06\00:53:17.39 the story of Abraham. 00:53:17.43\00:53:19.63 Consider Abraham, this is Hebrews 11:17. 00:53:19.66\00:53:24.77 It says, "By faith Abraham, 00:53:24.80\00:53:26.33 when he was tested, offered up Isaac, 00:53:26.37\00:53:29.10 and he who had received the promise offered up 00:53:29.14\00:53:31.97 his only begotten son, of whom it was said, 00:53:32.01\00:53:34.88 'In Isaac your seed shall be called.'" 00:53:34.91\00:53:37.45 This is phenomenal in considering, 00:53:37.48\00:53:41.12 and a prime example of receiving 00:53:41.15\00:53:43.05 and understanding the word in faith. 00:53:43.08\00:53:45.12 Because this man, I love that story there, 00:53:45.15\00:53:47.72 Isaac, he's looking around, he's like, 00:53:47.76\00:53:49.46 "Hey, you know, where's the lamb?" 00:53:49.49\00:53:50.83 You know, he says, 00:53:50.86\00:53:52.19 God's going to provide the lamb. 00:53:52.23\00:53:53.56 This man had faith in God's word, 00:53:53.60\00:53:55.26 even though he did not know 00:53:55.30\00:53:56.73 exactly how God was going to deliver. 00:53:56.77\00:53:58.33 He also believed that 00:53:58.37\00:53:59.70 even if He did take the life of his son, 00:53:59.73\00:54:01.37 that God would resurrect his son. 00:54:01.40\00:54:03.61 It's very powerful indeed. 00:54:03.64\00:54:05.84 That all being said, 00:54:05.87\00:54:07.21 we have to come to a point in our life, 00:54:07.24\00:54:10.28 in our walk with the Lord, 00:54:10.31\00:54:12.08 where even though 00:54:12.11\00:54:13.45 there may not be that physical evidence 00:54:13.48\00:54:16.62 and proof for every little single thing, 00:54:16.65\00:54:18.75 the Lord has brought me in my walk with God 00:54:18.79\00:54:20.36 and I want to encourage you at home, 00:54:20.39\00:54:21.72 the Lord has brought me in my walk with Him 00:54:21.76\00:54:23.22 where I can say, you know what, Lord, 00:54:23.26\00:54:24.59 You know what's best. 00:54:24.63\00:54:25.96 You know, the end from the beginning, 00:54:25.99\00:54:27.33 Your ways are not my ways, 00:54:27.36\00:54:28.70 Your thoughts are not my thoughts, 00:54:28.73\00:54:30.07 and I may find a text and go, "What in the world?" 00:54:30.10\00:54:31.47 It's like a curveball. What? 00:54:31.50\00:54:32.83 What is it? Why did God do this? 00:54:32.87\00:54:34.20 Why did this happen? 00:54:34.24\00:54:35.57 But the Lord has brought me in my walk where I'm like, 00:54:35.60\00:54:37.34 you know what, God, 00:54:37.37\00:54:38.71 I don't I can't explain this now. 00:54:38.74\00:54:40.24 And I don't understand this now. 00:54:40.28\00:54:41.61 I don't know why You done this or why you said this. 00:54:41.64\00:54:43.58 But at the end of the day, God, You know what's best, 00:54:43.61\00:54:45.88 and in faith by faith, I want to receive this word, 00:54:45.91\00:54:49.38 because you are worthy, O God. 00:54:49.42\00:54:50.85 And I just praise the Lord that we have this word 00:54:50.89\00:54:53.15 and we can indeed receive it in faith. 00:54:53.19\00:54:56.16 Amen. Absolutely, yes. 00:54:56.19\00:54:58.59 Pastor Dinzey, thank you, Pastor Kenny. 00:54:58.63\00:55:00.26 Jill, begin with our closing comments. 00:55:00.30\00:55:02.80 Psalm 119. 00:55:02.83\00:55:04.40 The entire Psalm focusing on the Word of God. 00:55:04.43\00:55:08.17 Psalm 119:18, "Open my eyes, 00:55:08.20\00:55:11.71 that I may see wondrous things from Your law." 00:55:11.74\00:55:15.71 So I just want to encourage you 00:55:15.74\00:55:17.08 to spend time in the Word of God. 00:55:17.11\00:55:18.85 You might have never even opened the Bible. 00:55:18.88\00:55:21.22 You might be afraid of the Bible, 00:55:21.25\00:55:22.72 you might be unsure if you can trust 00:55:22.75\00:55:25.49 the validity of the Word of God. 00:55:25.52\00:55:27.66 Spend time in the Word of God and ask God, 00:55:27.69\00:55:30.66 open up my eyes, so that I can discern 00:55:30.69\00:55:33.46 what You have for me in Your work. 00:55:33.50\00:55:35.50 That's right. Pastor Kenny? 00:55:35.53\00:55:37.53 In Joshua 24:27, said, 00:55:37.57\00:55:41.27 "Joshua said unto all the people, 00:55:41.30\00:55:42.70 behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us, 00:55:42.74\00:55:46.64 for it hath heard all the words that the Lord 00:55:46.68\00:55:49.34 which he spake unto us: 00:55:49.38\00:55:50.91 it shall be therefore a witness unto you, 00:55:50.95\00:55:54.22 lest ye deny your God." 00:55:54.25\00:55:57.95 You know the written Word of God, 00:55:57.99\00:55:59.32 we're talking about living by faith. 00:55:59.35\00:56:01.36 We don't want to deny God. That's right. 00:56:01.39\00:56:04.99 When we look at the Bible, we have light, in this world, 00:56:05.03\00:56:10.13 there's darkness. 00:56:10.17\00:56:12.03 But God wants to bring us 00:56:12.07\00:56:13.64 His light to bring us out of darkness. 00:56:13.67\00:56:16.40 And I want to encourage you to daily spend time 00:56:16.44\00:56:20.04 with the Lord reading the scriptures. 00:56:20.08\00:56:22.18 When you do this, you're going to be transformed. 00:56:22.21\00:56:25.41 Amen. Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:56:25.45\00:56:27.22 You know, considering that faith chapter, 00:56:27.25\00:56:29.52 as I was contemplating on that, 00:56:29.55\00:56:31.12 the common theme that you see among every single 00:56:31.15\00:56:33.36 one of those people listed is that 00:56:33.39\00:56:35.22 they all learn to trust in God's Word. 00:56:35.26\00:56:38.19 And I think of John 3:16, that famous, 00:56:38.23\00:56:40.60 probably the most quoted verse of all time, you know, 00:56:40.63\00:56:43.83 they that believe in him, 00:56:43.87\00:56:46.13 that Greek word is pisteuo in the Greek 00:56:46.17\00:56:48.87 and it means to trust, to put trust in. 00:56:48.90\00:56:51.37 And so when we trust the Word of the Lord, 00:56:51.41\00:56:53.84 our faith will grow 00:56:53.88\00:56:55.21 and then we can learn to receive 00:56:55.24\00:56:56.58 God's Word by faith. 00:56:56.61\00:56:58.31 Well, thank you all for that and you know, 00:56:58.35\00:56:59.85 this study has been a wonderful study, 00:56:59.88\00:57:02.12 as we've seen the nature of the Bible, 00:57:02.15\00:57:04.02 the relationship of prophecy in the Bible, 00:57:04.05\00:57:05.92 the forensic aspects of it. 00:57:05.95\00:57:07.29 All of that are reminders that God is an unfolding God, 00:57:07.32\00:57:11.49 a revelation that really wouldn't be fully understood 00:57:11.53\00:57:15.00 until we make it to the kingdom of God. 00:57:15.03\00:57:17.47 I believe the thought with you that came to my mind 00:57:17.50\00:57:19.27 about the attitude we must have 00:57:19.30\00:57:22.44 along the lines of understanding the Bible. 00:57:22.47\00:57:24.47 Napoleon said, "The Bible is no mere book, 00:57:24.51\00:57:28.78 but a living creature with a power 00:57:28.81\00:57:31.61 that conquers all that oppose it." 00:57:31.65\00:57:34.98 That's the power in the Word of God. 00:57:35.02\00:57:36.85 And the Bible says in Psalms 119, 00:57:36.89\00:57:38.99 as you pointed out, verse 89, 00:57:39.02\00:57:40.36 "Forever O Lord, 00:57:40.39\00:57:42.16 Your word is settled in heaven." 00:57:42.19\00:57:44.03 Well, friends, I hope you enjoyed 00:57:44.06\00:57:45.39 our study today. 00:57:45.43\00:57:46.76 But I'd like to encourage you 00:57:46.80\00:57:48.13 to get ready for our next lesson 00:57:48.16\00:57:49.76 which is entitled, 00:57:49.80\00:57:51.13 "Jesus and the Apostles' View of the Bible." 00:57:51.17\00:57:54.57 We pray that you've been blessed. 00:57:54.60\00:57:56.14 But until we see you again, 00:57:56.17\00:57:57.51 may the Word of God dwell in you richly. 00:57:57.54\00:58:00.38 Have a blessed day. 00:58:00.41\00:58:01.74 Amen. Amen. 00:58:01.78\00:58:03.11
