when Babylonian Empire fell.

his hair and beard,

and there's prayer and
again confession of sin

and repentance,
and an identification

with the sins of the people.

Now in Daniel 9,

Jeremiah was an older
contemporary of Daniel

and Jeremiah was
not taken captive,

when the rest of them
were taken captive 70 years
00:08:41.22\00:08:43.55
before from the land of Judah.
00:08:43.59\00:08:46.69
But he had prophesized
about the 70 years captivity
00:08:46.72\00:08:49.89
and Daniel is reading
and studying and he discerns,
00:08:49.92\00:08:54.86
he understands this prophecy.
00:08:54.90\00:08:57.63
So what prophecy was he reading?
00:08:57.67\00:08:59.93
I can't be for sure,
but we're gonna look at one
00:08:59.97\00:09:02.07
that Jeremiah talks about,
that talks about the 70 years.

And that's Jeremiah 25:11-12,

"And this whole land
shall be a desolation
00:09:09.81\00:09:11.88
and an
astonishment, and these nations
00:09:11.91\00:09:14.32
shall serve the king
of Babylon seventy years.
00:09:14.35\00:09:17.72
Then it will come to pass,
when 70 years are completed,
00:09:17.75\00:09:21.09
that I will punish
the king of Babylon
00:09:21.12\00:09:23.39
and that nation, the
land of the Chaldeans,

We know from history,
at the end of the 70 years,

his decree of restoration.

returned under Zerubbabel.

that time, going back from

when Daniel was taken captive
to when this decree was given,

there is your 70
year time period,

they were in Babylon.

And then they were allowed,

God now is gonna
punish the Babylonians,

and then the Jewish people

can go back to their homeland.

Let's look at
Leviticus. Leviticus Chapter 26.

This is another,

you can say
prophecy if you want.

In Leviticus 26, 27 and 28,

this is a heavy chapter
just being honest with you.

when I read this, this
is pretty heavy for me.

"After all this,
if you do not obey Me,

but walk contrary to Me,

then I also will walk
contrary to you in fury,

I, even I will chastise
you seven times for your sins.

I will lay your cities waste

and bring your
sanctuaries to desolation,

I will not smell the

Now this is what happened

at three quick lessons

So what are we to do
in the midst of this?

We acknowledge our

Daniel sought God's faith.

And we study God's Word

because His Word
reveals the future.

His Word reveals my sin.

And most importantly,
His Word reveals My Savior.

those four beasts
and that little horn.

course, most people,

especially in
the Adventist faith,

they think of that
Daniel 8:14, unto 2,300 years.

But when you get to Daniel 9,

most people's mind goes
directly to the latter portion

of the verses
of Daniel Chapter 9

which is talking about
the 70 weeks of Israel,

the 70 weeks
prophecy and, you know,

there's something I
just wanted to bring out

and that is the fact that there,
00:14:08.31\00:14:10.21
the devil attacks this prophecy.

This is probably one of the most

profound
prophecies in all the Bible.

Now my day is
Monday which is entitled,

And so here Daniel is,

there's been many

there's been many years to pass,

the last thing he
remembers is seeing this vision,

and there is an
aspect of this vision

that he didn't understand, okay.

Now what's so
powerful about this is

there's two different
words in Daniel used for vision.

The first word for vision
is the Hebrew word Chazown,

which is talking
about the overall vision

and the content of the vision
00:15:05.57\00:15:06.90
from the very
beginning to the very end.

But the part at
the very end of Daniel,

and I just wanna make
this point really quickly.

Verse 26, Daniel says,
00:15:12.41\00:15:13.98
"And the vision of the
evenings and mornings,"
00:15:14.01\00:15:16.04
that's referring to the time
part of the 2,300 years, okay,
00:15:16.08\00:15:21.42
and it goes on to say,
"which was told is true,
00:15:21.45\00:15:23.52
therefore seal up the vision,
00:15:23.55\00:15:24.89
for it refers to
many days in the future."
00:15:24.92\00:15:26.62
And then, of course,
in verse 27, Daniel says,

"I fainted, and
in the latter part,

and I was
astonished by the vision."

But, what I wanna focus on

Daniel's in prayer,
he's praying in agony for God

to show grace on him
and the nation of Israel.

So I'd like to go
through this prayer.

We may not be able to
go through every verse,

but I know Shelley has a
lot to say on this as well,

so I'm not gonna
go through it all,

but I just wanna
highlight a few things as

to why Daniel is
praying what he's praying,

and why the
Angel Gabriel shows up

so swiftly as to
just be standing there

when he's finished praying,

I mean, he's there waiting
on him to give an answer.

And so we see
here in Daniel 9:3,

Daniel begins
his plead with God.

It says, "Then I set my
face toward the Lord God

to make request by
prayer and supplications,
00:16:51.97\00:16:54.34
and with fasting,
sackcloth, and ashes."
00:16:54.38\00:16:57.05
And as you brought out,
Jill, beautifully, Daniel,

I mean this is
almost in a state,
00:16:59.71\00:17:01.58
this is what the
children of Israel
00:17:01.62\00:17:03.69
would be in on
the Day of Atonement.

He's having an
atoning moment right now.

He's having...
00:17:08.39\00:17:09.72
Because Daniel is
living in the time of judgment.

This 70 year
time period was a time

of judgment for Israel.

And so, you can almost say
he's having a many antitypical
00:17:15.70\00:17:19.13
atonement at this moment,

even though it's
not technically that.

We know that he's
pleading for the Lord,

"Lord, hear my prayer."

He's willing to lower himself

as low as the dirt of the earth,

to show God that he
is humbling himself that

He may hear his prayer.

And so notice verse 4.

He says, "I prayed
to the Lord my God,

and made confession, and said,
'O Lord, great and awesome God,

who keeps His covenant and mercy

with those who love Him,

and with those who
keep His commandments.'"

And I just wanna highlight here,

if you continue to
read through this chapter

and through this prayer.

You will see the
reoccurring words

like commandments, law, obey.

Daniel was
highlighting the fact that

the children of Israel
00:18:00.41\00:18:02.14
as a nation are
in this judgment,
00:18:02.18\00:18:04.01
they're in this
bondage of Babylon.
00:18:04.05\00:18:06.98
And have been
00:18:07.02\00:18:08.35
because of their
lack of discernment
00:18:08.38\00:18:10.39
towards the commandments of God,
00:18:10.42\00:18:12.35
their lack of being obedient
to the Lord as a nation.
00:18:12.39\00:18:15.29
And so more than nine
times, around nine times,
00:18:15.32\00:18:17.43
he mentions, Lord,
00:18:17.46\00:18:18.79
we did not keep
Your commandments, Lord,
00:18:18.83\00:18:20.16
we did not obey Your law.
00:18:20.20\00:18:21.66
Lord, we were not obedient,
00:18:21.70\00:18:23.20
and so He's pouring
his heart out to the Lord.
00:18:23.23\00:18:24.80
He goes on to say,

"We have sinned
and committed iniquity,
00:18:26.20\00:18:28.24
we have done
wickedly and rebelled,
00:18:28.27\00:18:30.21
even by departing
from Your precepts

and Your judgments.

Neither have we heeded
your servants the prophets,

who spoke Your
name to our kings,

and our princes, to our fathers,

and all the people of the land."

Now I have to pause
here and may mention.

He's referring
to the covenant that

God made with the
Israelites back n Exodus 19.

And you're gonna
see this come up again

at the end of this
chapter when it says that Jesus,

He confirmed the
covenant with many for one week.

The covenant that's
being confirmed here

is the covenant in Exodus 9:5-6,
00:19:01.04\00:19:03.84
I mean, excuse me
19:5-6 where the Lord says,

"Now therefore, if you
will obey My voice indeed

and keep My covenant,
00:19:09.58\00:19:11.41
then you shall be
a special treasure
00:19:11.45\00:19:13.95
to Me above all people,
for all the earth is Mine.

And you shall be a kingdom
of priests and a holy nation."

God wanted this nation to
be His holy representatives.

The beacon of
light to a dark world.

But, you know what followed.
They said, yes, Lord, we will.

All that You've
said, we will do.

But what follows

What happens is that history,

we can trace of
840 years of rebellion.

All the way up to,
finally the Lord says, look,

I don't wanna forsake you,
and I'm not gonna forsake you,

You have to forsaken me.

You have abandoned Me,

you have broken up
with Me for the last time

and so I've got to
let the consequences come.

And so, Daniel
stood praying in verse 7,

to the inhabitants of

those near and those
far off in the countries

to which You have driven them,
because of the unfaithfulness

which they have
committed against You."

So he's saying, Lord, you
know you have been merciful.

We do deserve everything

that has come upon us but
he still makes the appeal.

evacuate His own sanctuary

pouring his heart out

to the Lord in this chapter.

And it culminates in verse 19

I mean this is a great prayer.

So what he does as he
makes humble confession

but he has such great confidence

in God's faithfulness
and God's righteousness.

You know, what I
like about Daniel

is his character
was marked by humility.

I mean Daniel's
a very humble man.

He was totally
dependent upon God always.

And this is what

Prayer shows your
dependence upon God.

Prayer opposes pride.

If you're not praying often,

then you're
being rather prideful

because you're
depending upon yourself.

So prayer opposes pride.

It expresses that attitude,
the dependency upon God.

So what Daniel's doing?

He's praying with a
spirit of unselfishness and care

intercession is a sacrifice

The Angel Gabriel
comes to Daniel to say,

because Daniel you

In other words,
you're precious to God.

You're highly esteemed,

And I think the reason
he was treasured by God

is because God is
looking for an intercessor.

He still is today.
And that pleases Him.

I want to point out
five principles very quickly

of why Daniel's prayer is
such a rich example to us.

He demonstrates five principles.
00:26:52.64\00:26:54.38
Number one, he prays
in response to God's Word.
00:26:54.41\00:26:59.48
Daniel 9:2 says, "Daniel learned
00:26:59.51\00:27:02.28
from reading the
Word of the Lord,
00:27:02.32\00:27:04.12
as we looked to
Jeremiah the prophet,
00:27:04.15\00:27:06.35
that Jerusalem must
lie desolate for 70 years.
00:27:06.39\00:27:10.26
So scripture is God
00:27:10.29\00:27:14.53
speaking to us, if you will.
00:27:14.56\00:27:17.43
And when God
speaks, it happens, right?
00:27:17.47\00:27:20.20
That's right.
00:27:20.24\00:27:21.57
So what we need to
realize is that confidence
00:27:21.60\00:27:26.47
in God's Word
00:27:26.51\00:27:27.84
should it make us
complacent to prayer
00:27:27.88\00:27:30.35
that ought to
energize our prayer
00:27:30.38\00:27:32.61
because Daniel's prayer
not only begins with the Bible,

but it is filled with scripture.

So if you're struggling
to pray, get into the Word.

And I guarantee
you, if you listen to God

as He speaks to
you, you will pray.

So number one was,

he prayed in
response to God's Word.

Number two, is
he humbled himself

through self denial

and entered God's
presence with a fervent plea.

Daniel 9:3 says,
he turned his face

to the Lord and pleaded with him

study the prophecy we see,

sins, to make reconciliation

for the iniquity, to bring

and to seal up the
vision and the prophecy,

So as we look at these sayings,
