and Daniel is now an older man

in governmental capacity

Now, Daniel 4,

conversion of Nebuchadnezzar.

And obviously,

Nebuchadnezzar passed away.

has taken place as it were.

Nebuchadnezzar's son
took over the throne,

his name Evil.

Can you imagine
naming your son that?

minute, Evil Merodach,

why would you name your son that

or he's also called Amel-Marduk.

He only reigned
a couple of years,

and then the son-in-law

of Nebuchadnezzar reigned
a couple years after that.

He died of natural causes

and then the grandson of
Nebuchadnezzar took over.

He was assassinated
after less than a year.

And then a gentleman
by the name of Nabonidus

became king of Babylon.

He ruled for 17 years.

partway into his
rulership, his son Belshazzar

became a co regent as
it were with his father.

This explains why, Pastor
Ryan, in Daniel Chapter 5 later,

Belshazzar offers
to Daniel, he says,

I'll make you the third
ruler because really technically

Belshazzar could
have been the second ruler

coreigning with his father.

Belshazzar is the
grandson of Nebuchadnezzar

but through his mother,

the accuracy of the Word of God.

Remember in Daniel

Daniel had said after
you, after the head of gold

shall arise a
kingdom inferior to you.

And this prediction takes place

here in Daniel Chapter 5.

It also records Belshazzar's

open defiance of
the God of heaven

and the judgment of God
that came down upon him.

So let's read the
first four verses here.

Verse 1, "Belshazzar the king
00:06:19.11\00:06:20.48
made a great feast for
a thousand of his lords,
00:06:20.51\00:06:23.28
and drank wine

in the presence
of the thousand."

Now, it's interesting, I
can't even imagine a party
00:06:26.15\00:06:28.52
with a thousand people as guests
00:06:28.55\00:06:31.25
and then you have the
wives in addition to that,
00:06:31.29\00:06:34.39
but they said in ancient times,
00:06:34.42\00:06:36.56
Persian monarch
sometimes would dine
00:06:36.59\00:06:38.66
with as many as 15,000 people.
00:06:38.69\00:06:41.00
So by contrast,
00:06:41.03\00:06:42.36
maybe this is a
small dinner engagement.
00:06:42.40\00:06:44.70
So the size
might not be unusual,

but the setting
most certainly is.

We know that Medo-Persians
00:06:48.57\00:06:49.90
had already been
engaging in battle.

Nabonidus, had gone
to fight against them,

and surrounding
area had been captured
00:06:56.11\00:06:58.48
but Babylon had remained,

you could say it had not fallen,

they had not captured Babylon.

Maybe the feast was
to ignore their problems

or to bolster their
faith in their pagan gods,

I don't know, but
they had this feast.

Verse 2, "While
he tasted the wine

Belshazzar gave command

to bring the gold
and silver vessels,

which his father Nebuchadnezzar
had taken from the temple

which had been in Jerusalem,

that the king and
his lords, his wives,

his concubines
might drink from them."

brought the gold vessels

showed these vessels respect

because he brought them

into the house of his God.

But here Belshazzar is
taking the sacred vessels

from the house
00:07:57.81\00:07:59.17
and he is
defiling them by using them

in some sort of
pagan drunken revelry.

Not only that, he
uses these sacred vessels
00:08:07.12\00:08:09.98
that are representative of God,
00:08:10.02\00:08:12.72
and He praises his pagan gods.
00:08:12.75\00:08:15.39
We see that in
verse 4, "They drink wine
00:08:15.42\00:08:18.03
and they praised the
gods of gold, and silver,
00:08:18.06\00:08:22.56
bronze and iron, wood and stone.
00:08:22.60\00:08:24.97
Now, there's six
gods, six mentioned, right?

Gold, silver,
bronze, iron, wood, stone.

Now it's interesting to me.

Have you heard
those metals before,

Gold, being the head
of the image of Babylon,

the chest of silver,

bronze, the belly of bronze,

that was
Greece, legs, iron Rome.

Now the only metal

that's
different as it says wood,

instead of the feet
being iron and clay,

and then of course the stone

Christ's everlasting kingdom,

But this young man seems
to be much more arrogant,

much, much more drowning
in the paganistic practices

and theories of the day

so much that he has
a complete disrespect

for that which is holy.

And as Jill
brought out wonderfully,

we see that the results
of this causes God to say,

called wise men of Babylon.

that is the case here, he
seeks and calls all of those

who are on the
payroll of the kingdom,

and he calls
them in and hopes that

they can interpret it.

We'll talk about

but I want to
go on to talk about

the reward because he says,

is a color worn by royalty

in ancient times, and
we can see a correlation

of this in Esther 8:15.

So the Bible

"So Mordecai went out
from the presence of the king

in royal apparel,

and blue of blue and white,

with a great crown of gold

and a garment of
fine linen and purple,

and the city of
Shushan, rejoiced,

So the color purple

associated with royalty.

which was a sign
of high social status.

chain around his neck."

She's wearing
purple and scarlet,

of course, and so
she's full of abominations

how the king in this
very serious spiritual moment

that God is
getting their attention.

All that this king can
do is turn to the elements

of the earth turn to
all the filthy abominations

that he's called and say,

I'm gonna reward you with these.

And it gets me to thinking,

how many times do we often think
00:19:58.46\00:20:00.23
that our reward should be
00:20:00.26\00:20:02.26
that of the filthy
abominations of the world?

We spend our time
sowing and wrapping
00:20:04.67\00:20:06.77
instead of
pausing to realize that
00:20:06.80\00:20:08.44
Jesus Christ is
trying to write a message
00:20:08.47\00:20:10.77
on our hearts and in our
minds to get our attention,

sometimes we get so caught
up and distracted by the themes

and things of the
world that we end up looking

for the finer things
in life to satisfy us,

put the gold on us,
put the ornamental jewelry,
00:20:21.48\00:20:24.22
put the fine clothing,
self, self, self, self, self,
00:20:24.25\00:20:27.02
which is what this king
was wrapped up in very clearly.

And, of course,
the third position
00:20:30.86\00:20:33.13
in all of the kingdom
00:20:33.16\00:20:34.50
which Jill
mentioned very clearly,

why that would
be the case because,

actually it's
interesting, historically,
00:20:38.17\00:20:40.17
many people have
tried to discredit
00:20:40.20\00:20:42.60
the validity of Daniel
based on Daniel Chapter 5,

because nowhere
in secular history
00:20:45.41\00:20:47.38
is there found a reference
to Belshazzar as the king
00:20:47.41\00:20:50.48
or a ruler of Babylon.
00:20:50.51\00:20:51.95
But that was all
clarified a few years later
00:20:51.98\00:20:54.52
when they unearthed
00:20:54.55\00:20:56.38
an old ancient
tablet of Babylon,
00:20:56.42\00:20:58.22
which it did clarify that
He was the son of Nabonidus.

Nabonidus, is
that how you say it,

which again was the
king of Babylon at the time.

and try to read this writing.

It was in the
language of the Chaldean,

so they
actually could understand

make out the meaning

were communicating to them

"For the wisdom of

shall be hidden."

In fact, Paul
quoted this very verse.

And in response to that,

We have all this wisdom,

but God is knocking
on the door of our hearts

you're not as wise as you think.

But if you make Me, if
you allow Me to come in,
