That's right.

many powerful testimonies

prophets and biblical servants,

that we can see the power
of the salvation of Christ

throughout the scripture.

And one of
those powerful records

comes through the experience
of the mother of Jesus herself.

Of course, that is Mary.

And that was
kind of a little bit

of a coverage of
what Sabbath afternoon
00:05:17.51\00:05:20.22
was setting us up for.
00:05:20.25\00:05:21.58
But really, I wanna jump
right into Sunday's lesson,

which is entitled Mary's Song.
00:05:24.25\00:05:26.62
Now, have very
short but very profound.
00:05:26.65\00:05:28.79
This is one of the
most powerful text,
00:05:28.82\00:05:31.09
one of the most
powerful praise reports
00:05:31.13\00:05:33.70
that one could
possibly read and study
00:05:33.73\00:05:36.87
and it comes from the
Mother of Jesus, Mary,
00:05:36.90\00:05:39.33
and it's entitled Mary's Song
00:05:39.37\00:05:40.80
and that's what Sunday's
lesson is entitled Mary's Song.

Sunday's lesson begins
00:05:44.14\00:05:45.47
in the light of
the wonderful news.
00:05:45.51\00:05:46.88
God has just sent to
Mary the Mother of Jesus.

She's obviously with child,

she hasn't yet told anyone
00:05:51.61\00:05:53.31
but aims to visit
her relative Elizabeth
00:05:53.35\00:05:55.98
who is also experiencing
00:05:56.02\00:05:58.79
or expecting a
miracle baby herself.

Together these ladies
have lots to be thankful for.
00:06:01.46\00:06:05.19
And we experience those
praises in Luke Chapter 1.
00:06:05.23\00:06:08.36
And so that's where
I would like to take us
00:06:08.40\00:06:09.73
at this moment
00:06:09.76\00:06:11.13
over into the
Gospel of Luke Chapter 1.
00:06:11.17\00:06:13.84
And we're gonna
begin at verse 46
00:06:13.87\00:06:16.24
with Mary's song
or the song of Mary,
00:06:16.27\00:06:18.21
as it might say, in your Bible.
00:06:18.24\00:06:20.48
Beginning with verse 46,
00:06:20.51\00:06:23.08
it says, "And Mary said,
00:06:23.11\00:06:25.01
'My soul magnifies the Lord,
00:06:25.05\00:06:29.08
and my spirit has
rejoiced in God my Savior."
00:06:29.12\00:06:33.79
I think many of us,
00:06:33.82\00:06:35.19
all of us should be able to
give a praise report like this
00:06:35.22\00:06:38.19
because we are so
grateful to serve a mighty God
00:06:38.23\00:06:41.33
and to be able
to magnify the Lord
00:06:41.36\00:06:42.90
should be our first priority.
00:06:42.93\00:06:44.50
And I love how she begins
00:06:44.53\00:06:46.07
with almost a
thesis statement here.
00:06:46.10\00:06:47.87
Everything about her is
sanctified for the service,
00:06:47.90\00:06:51.04
praise, and worship of God.
00:06:51.07\00:06:53.34
Her entire being is
extended in happiness and praise
00:06:53.38\00:06:56.88
in these opening lines.
00:06:56.91\00:06:58.25
She would go on
to say in verse 48,
00:06:58.28\00:07:00.62
"For He has
regarded the lowly state
00:07:00.65\00:07:03.59
of His maidservant."
00:07:03.62\00:07:05.82
And this is very interesting
00:07:05.85\00:07:07.42
because she is basically
being very candid in recognizing
00:07:07.46\00:07:10.96
that she belongs to
a lower social class.
00:07:10.99\00:07:13.16
She was what would
basically many would
00:07:13.19\00:07:15.86
consider a poor young
peasant at this particular time.
00:07:15.90\00:07:18.63
And we were talking about a lady
00:07:18.67\00:07:20.07
who gave birth to the
Master of the Universe,
00:07:20.10\00:07:22.87
in an animal stable
or in a barn somewhere,
00:07:22.90\00:07:26.17
a very, very lowly person,
00:07:26.21\00:07:27.71
if she's recognizing the
lowly humbleness of her state
00:07:27.74\00:07:31.35
and her social class,
00:07:31.38\00:07:32.71
but she praises God
for His humble mercy,
00:07:32.75\00:07:36.65
care, and blessing
00:07:36.69\00:07:38.19
that would be
extended even to her
00:07:38.22\00:07:40.29
and I just praise God for that.
00:07:40.32\00:07:41.96
Well, I love these words,
in the same verse, verse 48,
00:07:41.99\00:07:44.83
she goes on to say,
00:07:44.86\00:07:46.19
"For behold,
henceforth all generations
00:07:46.23\00:07:49.46
will call me blessed."
00:07:49.50\00:07:51.37
Now again, somebody
might read into this
00:07:51.40\00:07:53.47
a little bit of arrogance,
00:07:53.50\00:07:54.84
but I don't believe
this is arrogance at all.
00:07:54.87\00:07:56.20
She's simply
acknowledging the fact
00:07:56.24\00:07:58.21
that she has been told
00:07:58.24\00:08:00.54
that she is going to
give birth to the Son of God.
00:08:00.58\00:08:04.18
And I just wanna ask
this, has she had this baby
00:08:04.21\00:08:06.68
when she's
making these statements?
00:08:06.72\00:08:08.48
This is a statement of faith
00:08:08.52\00:08:09.85
and I praise God for these words
00:08:09.88\00:08:11.22
because what faith she
is putting on display here
00:08:11.25\00:08:14.02
that she's already recognized
and I could just imagine people
00:08:14.06\00:08:17.19
that would be
put in her situation,
00:08:17.23\00:08:19.13
women that would perhaps
been put in her situation
00:08:19.16\00:08:21.53
been given the amazing news
00:08:21.56\00:08:24.03
that you're going
to have a miracle birth
00:08:24.07\00:08:26.77
as a virgin
00:08:26.80\00:08:28.14
and you're gonna give birth
to the Almighty Son of God.
00:08:28.17\00:08:31.47
You could imagine most
people would stop and say,
00:08:31.51\00:08:34.18
"Did I really
speak to that angel?
00:08:34.21\00:08:36.04
Did I really
receive that message?"
00:08:36.08\00:08:37.41
Perhaps I daydream that.
00:08:37.45\00:08:38.78
Perhaps that was a
dream I had but not Mary.
00:08:38.81\00:08:42.05
Right here she says, "Behold,
00:08:42.08\00:08:43.59
all generations
will call me blessed."
00:08:43.62\00:08:45.62
What a statement of faith
00:08:45.65\00:08:46.99
and I praise God
for this powerful woman.
00:08:47.02\00:08:49.36
She continues on in verse 49.
00:08:49.39\00:08:51.39
She says, "For He who is mighty
has done great things for me,
00:08:51.43\00:08:55.73
and holy is His name."
00:08:55.76\00:08:58.40
So again here she
praises God for His goodness
00:08:58.43\00:09:01.87
and magnifies His
holy name, which is...
00:09:01.90\00:09:04.44
I think we could do a
little bit more of that
00:09:04.47\00:09:05.81
in our own lives.
00:09:05.84\00:09:07.18
Amen. Absolutely. Amen.

I wanna encourage you at
home, give praises to God
00:09:08.58\00:09:10.25
because it uplifts your
spirit, you will be a happier,

just joyful person
all in all because of it.

We can follow the
example of Mary here.
00:09:15.75\00:09:17.75
She goes on to say in verse 50,
00:09:17.79\00:09:19.19
"And His mercy is
on those who fear Him
00:09:19.22\00:09:23.36
from generation to generation."

So here she acknowledges
the humble mercy of God

that was shown upon her
00:09:31.30\00:09:33.23
and anyone who reverences
or respects God for who He is.

What a powerful statement
of faith there as well.
00:09:38.41\00:09:41.34
Verse 51, she says,
00:09:41.38\00:09:42.91
"He has shown
strength with His arm,
00:09:42.94\00:09:46.28
He has scattered the
proud in the imagination
00:09:46.31\00:09:49.62
of their hearts."
00:09:49.65\00:09:50.99
So in this particular
verse, she testifies to the fact
00:09:51.02\00:09:53.59
that God is judge and a
righteous judge at that.
00:09:53.62\00:09:57.66
And the right arm, of course,
00:09:57.69\00:09:59.03
is a symbol of
covenant and authority,
00:09:59.06\00:10:01.30
and Mary recognizes
that God will rightfully
00:10:01.33\00:10:04.30
vindicate the
oppressed by humbling the proud.
00:10:04.33\00:10:08.14
And so we know we can
place just as Mary had faith,
00:10:08.17\00:10:10.91
we can place
faith in God and know
00:10:10.94\00:10:13.07
that vengeance is his
that no matter what situation
00:10:13.11\00:10:15.44
we may endure in this lifetime,
God will take care of it.
00:10:15.48\00:10:18.41
God is the ultimate judge
and He will judge righteously.
00:10:18.45\00:10:21.68
Amen.

Verse 52, "He has put down
the mighty from their thrones,

and exalted the lowly."

So again here, she's basically
stating that God stands for,

you know, again, God stands
for His humble needy servants

and deals with the
arrogant high ones accordingly.

She goes on to say in verse 53,

"He has filled the
hungry with good things,

and the rich He
has sent away empty."

So she continues her
expressions of contrast

and how God deals
with those in need

compared to those who
perhaps feel entitled.

Have you ever been
around someone like that,

someone who just
feels entitled, you know,
00:11:00.96\00:11:03.39
it kind of just rubs
me the wrong way at times,
00:11:03.43\00:11:05.79
but I have to really,
you know, seek for the mercy
00:11:05.83\00:11:08.66
and the grace of
God to see me through
00:11:08.70\00:11:10.50
when I'm around
people like that.
00:11:10.53\00:11:11.87
And, you know, I think
we've all probably been like
00:11:11.90\00:11:13.80
that a little bit in our life.
00:11:13.84\00:11:15.17
But we certainly need the
Spirit of God to humble us
00:11:15.20\00:11:17.27
in those moments.
00:11:17.31\00:11:18.64
And He certainly will
and if we would allow Him.

Again, she's stating here

that He provides
for those in need

and humbles
those who are haughty.

And then I love
these last two verses here,

powerful message just
in these last two verses.

In fact, an entire
sermon can be built on verse 54

Notice what she says here.

"He has helped
his servant Israel,

in remembrance of His mercy."

And that right there,

that one sentence right there

can sum up the
entire Old Testament.

But she goes on
to say in verse 55,

"As He spoke to our fathers,

to Abraham and to
his seed forever."

So in closing here in
these last couple of sentences,

Mary reaches back
into the rich history
00:12:05.32\00:12:08.09
of the lineage of
Israel to uplift God
00:12:08.12\00:12:10.49
for the mighty promise
keeping God that He is.
00:12:10.53\00:12:14.46
She highlights the fact
00:12:14.50\00:12:16.63
that God remembered
and honor the covenant
00:12:16.67\00:12:19.03
He made with Abraham.
00:12:19.07\00:12:20.90
And as a happy
descendant of Abraham herself,
00:12:20.94\00:12:24.31
Mary exalts God for His mercy
upon a lowly Israelite woman,
00:12:24.34\00:12:29.28
such as herself.
00:12:29.31\00:12:30.65
I mean, you could imagine
she probably considered herself
00:12:30.68\00:12:32.85
the lowly of the lowliest
00:12:32.88\00:12:34.22
and some people
might even consider her
00:12:34.25\00:12:35.65
the weakest of the week in
this particular generation.
00:12:35.68\00:12:39.22
And as I consider this entire
beautiful song that she sings,
00:12:39.25\00:12:45.23
I'm reminded of
a beautiful promise
00:12:45.26\00:12:47.16
that Jesus Himself gives
us in Revelation 3:20-22.
00:12:47.20\00:12:52.23
Jesus says, "Behold, I
stand at the door and knock."

Amen.
00:12:55.90\00:12:57.24
He knocked on the
heart of Mary and she opened.
00:12:57.27\00:12:59.07
So He says here, "If
anyone hears My voice
00:12:59.11\00:13:01.28
and opens the door,

I will come into
him and dine with him,

and he with Me.

To him who overcomes I
will grant to sit with Me

on My throne,

as I also overcame and sat down

You know what, we
just learned from Mary

God brings down those

who sits on thrones

when they reach the point
of arrogance and haughtiness.

But Jesus says,
"If you're humble,

I will have you sitting
with Me on My throne one day."

And I love how this ends.

"He who has an ear, let him hear

what the Spirit
says to the churches."

Now this is just

organization, or individual."

But what Jesus
preached here in Nazareth

is not just a
summary of His aims

but it's a
fulfillment of the prophecy

found in Isaiah Chapter 61.

And we see the
outworking of this prophecy

fulfilled in Jesus life
because what He preached

and proclaimed
there is what He lived.

So let's take a
look at that, Luke 4,

we're gonna begin
in verses 14 and 15.

Now this is just
the background to Him

coming into
Nazareth and speaking.

"Then Jesus returned

in the power of
the Spirit to Galilee,"

now if we have just come
through the time of temptation,

He had His baptism,

and then He was
led by the Spirit

into the
wilderness to be tempted.

And now it says
right after the temptation,

So He's becoming
well-known, you can say.

He's becoming known.

followers coming after Him.

probably a year anyway,

and what takes
place at Nazareth.

So when He
comes to His hometown,

the people think,
"Oh, this is Jesus."

"Oh, I remember Him."

And so there's all
kinds of remembrances.

Well, He was...

Well, we don't
know what they said.

But you imagine, you know,

little town like Nazareth,

I remember Jesus, but
now He's pretty famous.

where He had been brought up.

This shows us that
Jesus kept the Sabbath.

freedom and liberty,

His ministry of healing.

Later stories, as we
see the life of Jesus shows

that especially on the Sabbath,

He went about doing
good not only preaching,
00:17:25.87\00:17:27.94
but healing and ministering
to those who were in need.

Let's read verse 18,

"The Spirit of
the Lord is upon me,

because He has anointed Me."

And then He goes
into the mission.

But to me, it's interesting
that it begins with this,

the anointing
of the Holy Spirit.

This is as it were,

the preparation
for Jesus' mission.

How can He even give
the mission statement?

How can He say this is
what My calling is to be,

if He's not been
imbued with the Holy Spirit?

Now we know He had the
Holy Spirit from birth.
00:18:00.41\00:18:02.58
We know that
because the angel said
00:18:02.61\00:18:04.81
that the Holy Spirit
would overshadow Mary.
00:18:04.85\00:18:07.05
But in a special way,
00:18:07.08\00:18:08.42
if you turn
back to Luke 3:21-22,
00:18:08.45\00:18:11.85
at his baptism,
00:18:11.89\00:18:13.89
the Holy Spirit
descended upon Him as well.

It says, "When all
the people were baptized,

it came to pass that
Jesus also was baptized,
00:18:20.00\00:18:23.37
and while He prayed,
the heaven was opened.

And the Holy Spirit
descended in bodily form

like a dove upon Him,

and a voice came
from heaven, which said,

'You are My beloved Son,
in You, I am well pleased.'

anointing of the Holy Spirit

preparation for the mission

called Him to fulfill.

So the Spirit is upon Him

anointed for this work.

So what is the mission?

Number one, to preach
the gospel to the poor.

He's anointed to preach,

thing and then we'll dissect it.

heal the brokenhearted,

to proclaim
liberty to the captives

and recovery of
sight to the blind,
00:19:12.45\00:19:14.65
to set at liberty
those who are oppressed,
00:19:14.68\00:19:18.22
to proclaim the
acceptable year of the Lord.'
00:19:18.25\00:19:21.99
" So let's break that down

to preach the
gospel to the poor.

He's called to preach

to proclaim the good
news of salvation, the gospel,

but the word in Greek for poor

is one who crouches and cowers,

one who's deeply destitute.

So I believe this
is not just people

who are poor physically
00:19:42.11\00:19:43.45
'cause the gospel goes
to the rich and the poor.

It's for everyone,
but when I read that,

deeply, destitute,
00:19:47.82\00:19:50.39
who's deeply destitute?
00:19:50.42\00:19:51.99
We're all in need of Jesus.

We're all sinners
in need of repentance.

So the gospel
specifically is for you.

If you're
feeling, I am destitute,

the gospel's for you.

It says, "He sent Me to

Jesus came to heal you.

That's part of His mission.

And the healing in Greek
can be either physical healing

and Jesus did physical healing
while He walked this earth,

but it's also sometimes

He used to
symbolize spiritual healing.

So I think His mission
is both physical healing

and spiritual healing.

He was sent to proclaim
liberty to the captives,

to break those bonds
asunder and to set them free.

The word for liberty, we
think is just to set free,

but it also means
pardon or forgiveness.

So if you're in
prison, and someone says,

It says recovery
of sight to the blind.

Now this can be
physical blindness.

And we know that He healed
people's physical blindness,

but also spiritually.

He brought sight to those
00:21:19.57\00:21:22.04
who are spiritually in darkness.

And then it says to
set at liberty those
00:21:24.08\00:21:26.58
who are oppressed.
00:21:26.61\00:21:28.08
That word for
liberty is the same word
00:21:28.12\00:21:30.12
as the liberty for
the captives meaning,
00:21:30.15\00:21:32.22
it can also mean
that pardon or forgiveness
00:21:32.25\00:21:34.59
and those who are oppressed,
00:21:34.62\00:21:36.16
means to crush break
in pieces or shattered.
00:21:36.19\00:21:39.69
So to me, Jesus'
mission is specifically
00:21:39.73\00:21:43.57
for the most broken,
00:21:43.60\00:21:45.60
the most needy, the most...
00:21:45.63\00:21:48.60
needing His help.
00:21:52.34\00:21:53.68
That's right.
00:21:53.71\00:21:55.04
And that's why Jesus came.

And that's what He
stood there in Nazareth.

It says, "He closed the book,
00:21:59.98\00:22:01.32
and gave it back to the
attendant and sat down."
00:22:01.35\00:22:03.59
That's right.
00:22:03.62\00:22:04.95
"And everybody's eyes
are just fixed on Him there
00:22:04.99\00:22:06.86
in the synagogue.
00:22:06.89\00:22:08.32
And He began to say,
00:22:08.36\00:22:09.69
'Today this Scripture is
fulfilled in your hearing.'"

He's saying,

"I am the
fulfillment of that prophecy."

You've read it,
your whole life there

in the Book of
Isaiah the scroll.

I am the
fulfillment of that prophecy

and we know that they
had a little issue with that,

and we won't get into that

but they actually took
him out to throw, stone him

and he just
disappeared off over the cliff.

Jesus' mission, what
takeaways do I take from this?

Service is equally as
important as preaching.

I think of what Jesus said
when He sent out the disciples,

Matthew 10:8, "Heal
the sick, raise the dead,

cleanse the
lepers, drive out demons.

Freely you have
received, freely give."

Service is just as
important as preaching.

Number two,
ministering to those in need

whether
spiritually, emotionally,

or physically is part and parcel
00:22:59.47\00:23:02.08
of the
proclamation of the gospel.

The gospel is for
the sin, sick, soul,

but it's also for those
00:23:06.21\00:23:07.55
who physically
need that healing.

Number three,
it's more important

to obey the call of God
00:23:12.39\00:23:14.39
than to strive to please people.

Jesus knew what His mission is,
He knew what His calling was,

and nothing diverted
Him from that purpose.

And number four,

the gospel goes
to the most needy.

That's what I love the most
about this mission statement

is that Jesus came for
those who need it most.

And so we are
called as Christians,

people who claim
the name of Jesus

to take the gospel message
to those who need it most.

the foundation well

Isaiah 61 and also Luke
reiterated that in Luke 4:18,

the mission of Jesus,

but there are parameters

under which healing takes place.

Healing is just not
this arbitrary thing

that Jesus does.

Like some of these
evangelists nowadays

they have healing
seminars, or healing.

I call them, you
know, flea markets,

you show up, everybody's healed.

You wanna be healed,
you're healed, you're healed,
00:25:21.18\00:25:23.12
and they wave
their hands in directions
00:25:23.15\00:25:24.49
and people to fall
all over the place.
00:25:24.52\00:25:26.55
That's not the Bible.
00:25:26.59\00:25:27.92
That's not the way the
Bible communicates healing.

That's right.

But I wanna go ahead

and point out a couple of things

about the mission of Jesus.

You know, the gospel, the
writer in this lesson says,

"The Gospels are peppered

with the stories
of Jesus' miracles,
00:25:40.07\00:25:42.14
particularly those of healing.
00:25:42.17\00:25:45.11
As Isaiah had prophesied,

He healed the
blind and released those
00:25:46.54\00:25:48.88
who had been held
captive by disease,
00:25:48.91\00:25:51.61
sometimes after
many years of suffering."
00:25:51.65\00:25:54.78
I did a sermon once
called a woman with an issue
00:25:54.82\00:25:57.72
and that was a woman
with the issue of blood
00:25:57.75\00:25:59.69
but as a pastor you play
on the woman with an issue,
00:25:59.72\00:26:02.72
they're kind of
tying the church today
00:26:02.76\00:26:04.53
the woman with an issue.
00:26:04.56\00:26:06.06
And the reality of
it is, the issue she had
00:26:06.09\00:26:09.13
where she went to
the wrong physicians.
00:26:09.16\00:26:11.77
And so many of us
that are seeking healing
00:26:11.80\00:26:14.50
in other areas of our lives,
it may not be physical healing.
00:26:14.54\00:26:17.87
But we tend to go to
the wrong physicians,
00:26:17.91\00:26:20.41
before we go to
the master physician,
00:26:20.44\00:26:22.81
and she spent money
00:26:22.84\00:26:24.35
and when she had
nothing to show for it,
00:26:24.38\00:26:26.65
and I think that in some areas,
00:26:26.68\00:26:28.02
we go to the diet physicians,
00:26:28.05\00:26:29.85
we go to the dress physicians,
we go to the music physicians,
00:26:29.88\00:26:32.45
we go to all these
different physicians
00:26:32.49\00:26:33.86
looking for healing,
00:26:33.89\00:26:35.22
when simply we need to
go to the master physician
00:26:35.26\00:26:37.06
to find healing.
00:26:37.09\00:26:38.59
But that's the story
00:26:38.63\00:26:40.23
that had been a major
focal point of the beginning,
00:26:40.26\00:26:42.40
but I wanna point
out a couple of things.

Let's first go
to John Chapter 5.

And I'll come back to
some of those other items

if I have
enough time to do that,

but I wanna point out
the condition of healing.

One of the conditions
of healing is John 5:6.

It says, "When Jesus
saw him lying there,"

that's the man by the pool,
00:27:05.95\00:27:07.82
who had given all the reasons
why he hadn't been healed yet,
00:27:07.86\00:27:10.99
well, people keep
stepping ahead of me
00:27:11.03\00:27:12.59
when the water moves that
the angel touches the water,
00:27:12.63\00:27:15.53
they jumped down.
00:27:15.56\00:27:16.90
And I like this.
00:27:16.93\00:27:18.27
This is a very powerful point
00:27:18.30\00:27:19.63
that's brought
out about healing.
00:27:19.67\00:27:21.00
"When Jesus saw him lying there,
00:27:21.04\00:27:22.94
and knew that he had already

had been in that
condition a long time,
00:27:25.71\00:27:28.21
He said to him," look at this,
00:27:28.24\00:27:30.21
"Do you want to be made well?"

Yes.

And that to me says,

you have to want to be healed.

That's right.
