'Babylon is fallen, is
fallen, that great city,

of the wine of the
wrath of her fornication.'"

And I like to
just mention there,

most people get really confused

when they read
this particular text

because they
think, "Wait a second,
00:04:55.22\00:04:56.73
Babylon has
fallen, that great city."

And if you know
anything about history,

you know that the
ancient city of Babylon

fell many, many, many years ago.

So that's why you
have to understand that,

there's a
spiritual application here,

lots of symbolism.

I think the
greatest context clue

of this particular
verse is where it says,

"...because she," when
I hear the word, "she,"

I think of a woman, right?

And so I can imagine that as
John was seeing this envision,

when it says, when he heard
"she has made all nations,"
00:05:23.39\00:05:26.62
I'm sure he
said, "Wait a second.
00:05:26.65\00:05:27.99
Who is this woman? Who's she?"
00:05:28.02\00:05:29.36
But of course, God would reveal
00:05:29.39\00:05:30.73
who that she was
in a later chapter.

And of course,
now we find ourselves

in Revelation Chapter 17,

where we are introduced
to this great Babylon,

the mother of harlots.

I'm not actually going to
get into the title or the name,

the mother of harlots,

but my particular
assignment on Sunday,

which is entitled
"The Harlot Babylon"

is just to kind of
introduce us to who she is,

where she's coming from,
00:05:54.32\00:05:55.65
what's kind of happening
in the background here.

Notice I'm
going to begin reading

in Revelation 17:1,

and the Bible says,
"Then one of the seven angels
00:06:01.46\00:06:04.49
who had the seven bowls
came and talked with me,

saying to me,
'Come, and I will show you
00:06:07.46\00:06:11.43
the judgment of the great harlot
00:06:11.47\00:06:13.94
who sits on many
waters, with whom the kings

of the earth
committed fornication,

and the inhabitants of
the earth were made drunk

with the wine of
her fornication.'"

Now there's a lot in that verse,

but obviously
verses three and onwards,

really going to begin to
unpack the characteristics

and a little bit of the history

and also future of
this Babylonian character.

But what I would like to do

is just first establish
just a few foundational items.

And one of those is,
we're studying about a woman.
00:06:44.27\00:06:46.57
When it says she
has made all nations,
00:06:46.60\00:06:48.47
obviously Babylon,
00:06:48.50\00:06:49.84
this Babylon
character is a woman,
00:06:49.87\00:06:51.91
and we want to
make it very clear that
00:06:51.94\00:06:53.94
in Bible prophecy,
00:06:53.98\00:06:55.74
a woman represents a church.
00:06:55.78\00:06:58.98
Now let me just give you
a few proof texts for that
00:06:59.01\00:07:01.82
because the Bible makes it
very clear in Jeremiah 6:2.
00:07:01.85\00:07:05.25
The Bible says,
obviously coming from the Lord,
00:07:05.29\00:07:07.89
"I have likened the
daughter of Zion to a lovely
00:07:07.92\00:07:10.56
and delicate woman."
00:07:10.59\00:07:11.93
Zion in the Bible, of course,
was God's people, God's church.
00:07:11.96\00:07:14.83
So again, he
likened them to a woman.
00:07:14.83\00:07:17.27
Paul writes to us
in 2 Corinthians 11:2,
00:07:17.30\00:07:20.94
"For I am jealous for
you with godly jealousy.
00:07:20.97\00:07:24.51
For I have
betrothed you to one husband,
00:07:24.54\00:07:27.18
that I may present you as
a chaste virgin to Christ."
00:07:27.21\00:07:30.88
And when I hear
these words, chaste virgin,
00:07:30.95\00:07:32.78
I think of the 25,
actually in Matthew Chapter 25,
00:07:32.81\00:07:35.95
the 10 virgins, those virgins,
obviously they're women,

but they are waiting
for their bridegroom.

And of course we know
that bridegroom is Christ.

Christ is going to
return for his church,

the bride, again,
likened to a woman.
00:07:45.46\00:07:47.23
But interestingly
enough, I found this verse here,

I've read it many times,
never really connected it,

but I'm going to
connect it in this study.
00:07:51.90\00:07:53.90
And that is we're
studying about a harlot.

Now this woman
hasn't always been a harlot,
00:07:57.21\00:07:59.57
but she became a harlot.
00:07:59.61\00:08:01.38
Notice James 4:4 here,
James 4:4 tells us this,
00:08:01.41\00:08:07.35
"Adulterers and adulteresses!
00:08:07.38\00:08:11.65
Do you not know that friendship
00:08:11.69\00:08:14.09
with the world
is enmity with God?
00:08:14.12\00:08:18.29
Whoever therefore wants
to be a friend of the world
00:08:18.33\00:08:21.33
makes himself an enemy of God."

And when you this
particular passage of the,

you know, Babylon the great,
00:08:28.47\00:08:29.80
the mother of
harlots, there's no doubt

the context makes it very clear.

This is an enemy of
God. She is an adulterous.

She has committed
spiritual harlotry against God.
00:08:35.44\00:08:39.51
I just want to kind of pick

apart a few of the details here,

because some people, again,

dealing with these deep
symbolic words and concepts,

about a mass group,

a large body of
people that this harlot
00:09:21.46\00:09:24.93
is almost very influential over.

She's controlling.
She's very manipulative.
00:09:27.03\00:09:29.46
And of course she
is sitting amongst,
00:09:29.50\00:09:31.50
she is dwelling amongst
00:09:31.53\00:09:33.10
all of these
many masses of people.

Now we're going to get
into the identity of this beast.

And I think we kind of
all agreed ahead of time

that we would probably be

stepping on each other's lesson.

But there's no doubt
that the appropriate identity

of this particular
beast is none other than

that of the Roman papal church.

counterfeit institutions

take away His glory.

talking about the system,

the Roman papal church state,

we're talking about
this counterfeit system

that is at war
against God's kingdom.

And so right here talking
about this counterfeit system,

the Catholic papal system,

there are more than
1.2 billion Catholics

in the world today.

And that's not
including all of the influence

that this system has
all across the world.

We're talking about a
mass huge group of people

across this planet.

You will notice
that in verse five,

she's referred to
as "Babylon the great."

Just as ancient Babylon,
talking about the waters again,

these mass group of
people that she sits with,

just as ancient Babylon depended
00:10:54.18\00:10:55.82
on the River Euphrates,

okay, notice the
connection, for its existence.

You know, if you go
back and study the history,

ancient Babylon
depended on the River Euphrates.

So will spiritual
Babylon rely on the masses

for support in the last days.

that River Euphrates

The kings of the earth
here, of course, would symbolize

or signify all of the
leaders of the known world,

the political leaders,
such as the presidents,
00:11:42.33\00:11:44.03
prime ministers,
00:11:44.10\00:11:45.43
kings and
queens, things like that.

Obviously this Babylonian system
00:11:47.17\00:11:48.90
has great
influence and has a special,
00:11:48.94\00:11:52.87
not a very good relationship,
00:11:52.91\00:11:54.84
but an interesting relationship
00:11:54.88\00:11:56.31
with the kings and
the leaders of the world.
00:11:56.34\00:11:58.58
And of course they
have committed fornication
00:11:58.61\00:12:00.92
with this church.
00:12:00.95\00:12:02.28
And I just made this point here.

The church is to
be married to Christ.

We are married to Christ,

but when she leaves
her allegiance to Jesus

and forms a
connection with the world,

she is guilty of
spiritual adultery.

"This is a great mystery,

but I speak concerning

of the world are also affected.

wine of her intoxication.

drunk with the wine

this end-time religious system
is going to dominate secular

and political systems

and she will
exercise control over them.

full of blasphemous names.

this was a practice

in such a way to make themselves

more seductive to their clients.

So, but the harlot's
dress also reminds us

of the priest attire
in the Old Testament.

And that included the
colors of scarlet and purple.

a cup in her hand,

it's replicating
the drink offering

in this sanctuary

identical
elements as the bride city,

the new
Jerusalem that comes down

So what this is
suggesting once again is that

the prostitute here
that is depicted here

has a religious pedigree.

that unites all the false

and apostate
religious systems, all of them.

And this act makes her
the mother of prostitutes.

Now this is interesting.

To be a mother means
you have your daughters.

So what has
happened in this case,

in particularly in
the end of the world,

that this religious system

has spawned

practices of the mother

This end-time religious system

becomes Satan's powerful tool

to seduce people away from God.

And then in the Bible,

a name stands for
what, the character, right?

So what we see here is that

has the character of Babylon.

boasting about herself

arrogant boasting,

the knees, didn't he?
