going to keep the commandments

Our focus today is
going to be chapter 13.

And this is an
extension of the end time war

of Revelation 12:17.

It portrays Satan
preparing for the final battle.

And to win this
battle, he enlists the support

of two unholy allies.

And both of these are
portrayed as savage beasts.
00:03:40.62\00:03:44.99
The first beast
rises up out of the sea,
00:03:45.02\00:03:48.89
and the second beast
rises up out of the earth.
00:03:48.92\00:03:52.36
And these three
form an unholy trio.
00:03:52.39\00:03:55.73
This is the counterfeit
trinity, if you will.
00:03:55.76\00:03:59.50
Because it's the direct
opposite, or the antithesis,
00:04:00.37\00:04:04.61
to the Trinity of the Godhead.
00:04:04.64\00:04:06.47
So what they are doing is
opposing all of God's activities
00:04:06.78\00:04:11.48
to try to save humanity.
00:04:11.51\00:04:13.55
The second beast, we're going
to find in Revelation 13 and 14
00:04:13.85\00:04:18.72
that the central
issue of the final days
00:04:18.75\00:04:22.16
is the issue of worship.

Who do you worship?

And the second beast
uses force and coercion

to get people to
worship the first beast.

And when they do, they
receive the mark of the beast.

Which is something
none of us want to receive.

So what we're going to
do, once again, remember

in Revelation, all of
these symbols and signs

can be found, their definition,
in other parts of the Bible.

And doing that today,
we're going to unravel

the mysteries of
Revelation 13 and 14.

So far we have been
dealing with prophecies
00:05:08.67\00:05:11.57
that have been mostly
fulfilled in the past.
00:05:11.81\00:05:15.11
But from this point forward
we're going to be dealing
00:05:15.14\00:05:18.51
mostly, not exclusively,
but with prophecies that are
00:05:18.55\00:05:22.08
yet to be fulfilled.
00:05:22.12\00:05:24.42
And I love it that
God shows us in advance
00:05:24.62\00:05:28.72
so that we are not
caught by surprise.
00:05:28.76\00:05:32.03
But there is a word of
caution that is necessary.

While these prophecies
tell us what will happen at the
00:05:35.30\00:05:39.07
time of the end, they don't
tell us when they will happen
00:05:39.10\00:05:43.47
or exactly how they will happen.
00:05:43.51\00:05:45.94
So we have to be
careful not to go beyond
00:05:45.97\00:05:49.88
what the prophecy tells us.
00:05:49.91\00:05:52.21
You know, all
of these prophecies
00:05:52.61\00:05:54.18
have a practical application.
00:05:54.22\00:05:56.12
It is all to tell us
how we can live today
00:05:56.65\00:06:00.12
and how we can be
prepared for the future.
00:06:00.19\00:06:02.56
So as we focus on Revelation
13, this is the final battle
00:06:02.86\00:06:07.23
of earth's history, and
it's a tale of deception
00:06:07.23\00:06:10.97
as they set up the
image to the beast.
00:06:11.17\00:06:14.47
And in the historical
Adventist reading of Revelation,
00:06:14.80\00:06:18.77
these two beasts are the
main characters in the battle.
00:06:19.07\00:06:22.41
They're introduced with a
visual summary and then they've
00:06:23.55\00:06:26.92
got some historical data
that their previous history
00:06:26.95\00:06:31.59
is introduced in past
tense so we can identify them.
00:06:31.62\00:06:35.39
We believe that the
first beast is the beast,
00:06:35.42\00:06:40.40
the little horn
power of the Middle Ages,
00:06:40.43\00:06:42.83
which is the papal power.
00:06:42.86\00:06:44.70
Now I want to make
certain to say this:
00:06:44.73\00:06:47.50
We are not saying
that anyone who belongs
00:06:47.54\00:06:52.44
to the Roman
Catholic Church is lost.
00:06:52.54\00:06:57.45
We believe God has
people in every church.
00:06:57.51\00:07:00.38
But we do know that
this is really pretty clear
00:07:00.58\00:07:06.22
with all of the
symbols and all of the history
00:07:06.25\00:07:09.29
that this first
beast is the papacy.
00:07:09.49\00:07:11.56
And then beyond the
rise of the second beast
00:07:11.79\00:07:16.26
is the rise of
the United States.
00:07:16.30\00:07:18.27
Let's look at Sunday,
The Beast From the Sea.
00:07:18.30\00:07:20.44
Revelation 13:1-4
00:07:20.47\00:07:23.24
"Then I stood on
the sand of the sea.
00:07:23.74\00:07:25.54
And I saw a beast
rising up out of the sea,
00:07:25.57\00:07:28.28
having seven
heads and ten horns,
00:07:28.31\00:07:31.95
and on his horns ten crowns,
00:07:31.98\00:07:35.08
and on his heads
a blasphemous name."
00:07:35.12\00:07:39.45
Now when John wrote Revelation,
he knew the contemporary
00:07:39.49\00:07:43.46
readers would understand
this language, these symbols,
00:07:43.53\00:07:49.20
because they were familiar
with the book of Daniel.
00:07:49.23\00:07:51.60
And this is coming straight
from the book of Daniel.
00:07:51.70\00:07:54.97
The same God who
gave visions to Daniel
00:07:55.00\00:07:57.94
and visions to John is the
one who inspired their writing.
00:07:57.97\00:08:02.48
But let's look at Daniel 7, and
we'll look at verses 2 and 3.
00:08:02.51\00:08:07.55
Because the beasts of
Daniel are key to understanding
00:08:07.58\00:08:11.32
the beasts of Revelation.
00:08:11.35\00:08:12.85
And we see in the Old Testament
in Daniel that beasts represent
00:08:13.25\00:08:19.26
kingdoms or nations or powers.
00:08:19.29\00:08:22.20
"Daniel spoke, saying, 'I saw in
my vision by night, and behold,
00:08:24.67\00:08:28.90
the four winds of heaven
were stirring up the Great Sea.
00:08:28.94\00:08:32.64
And four great
beasts came up from the sea,
00:08:32.67\00:08:36.34
each different from the other.'"
00:08:36.38\00:08:37.95
Now flip over to
chapter 7 and verse 17.
00:08:37.98\00:08:42.18
He explains what this
symbol of a beast means.
00:08:42.22\00:08:46.76
"Those great
beasts, which are four,
00:08:47.06\00:08:50.36
are four kings which
arise out of the earth."
00:08:50.43\00:08:55.00
And then also in chapter 7
we'll look at Daniel 7:23-24.
00:08:55.40\00:09:01.00
He says, "The fourth beast shall
be a fourth kingdom on earth..."
00:09:01.04\00:09:05.87
Which indicates that
the three beasts prior
00:09:05.91\00:09:09.54
were kingdoms on the earth.
00:09:09.58\00:09:11.05
"...which shall be different
from all other kingdoms,
00:09:11.38\00:09:14.38
and shall
devour the whole earth,
00:09:15.02\00:09:17.52
trample it and
break it in pieces."
00:09:17.55\00:09:19.99
Now here we go with that
symbolism that we just read
00:09:20.19\00:09:23.02
in Revelation 13.

"The ten horns are ten kings who
shall arise from this kingdom.

And another
shall rise after them;
00:09:30.07\00:09:33.34
he shall be
different from the first ones,

and he shall subdue three kings.
00:09:36.91\00:09:40.68
So we know that Daniel shows
us four great world empires.

the first beast of
Daniel was the lion.
00:09:47.12\00:09:50.39
Which was who?
The Babylonian empire.
00:09:50.42\00:09:53.59
The second beast
of Daniel is the bear.
00:09:53.79\00:09:57.96
And this is Medo-Persia.
00:09:58.23\00:10:00.10
The third beast is the
leopard, which is Greece.
00:10:00.40\00:10:04.07
The fourth beast is this
dreadful beast with iron teeth
00:10:04.13\00:10:09.04
and the ten horns.
00:10:09.07\00:10:10.47
This is the Roman Empire.
00:10:10.51\00:10:13.94
So we have this
monstrous beast that's rising up
00:10:14.14\00:10:19.65
out of the waters.
00:10:19.68\00:10:21.02
And waters in Scripture,
we'll see that that symbol
00:10:21.05\00:10:23.89
represents multitudes of people.
00:10:23.95\00:10:27.06
Listen to Revelation 17:15.
00:10:27.12\00:10:29.99
That's where we
find this interpretation.
00:10:30.73\00:10:32.96
Revelation 17:15.

"He said to me, 'The
waters which you saw,
00:10:35.16\00:10:38.43
where the harlot sits,
are peoples, multitudes,
00:10:38.47\00:10:43.00
nations, and tongues.'"

You know what I love about this?

We don't have to guess.

I grew up guessing
and being taught everybody

had different ideas
what these symbols mean.

The Bible tells us
what these symbols are.

And the blasphemous names
point to the divine titles
00:11:00.19\00:11:04.99
that this beast claims.
00:11:05.03\00:11:06.80
This is the little horn
power that is coming up.
00:11:06.83\00:11:10.57
It's the papal
phase of the Roman Empire.
00:11:10.63\00:11:14.00
And what made it different is
that it wasn't just a political
00:11:14.04\00:11:17.47
power, but it is a
religio-political power.
00:11:17.51\00:11:22.24
So in Revelation 13:2 it
says, "The beast which I saw
00:11:22.58\00:11:26.28
was like a leopard, his feet
were like the feet of a bear,
00:11:26.31\00:11:29.32
and his mouth like
the mouth of a lion.
00:11:29.35\00:11:31.39
The dragon gave him
his power, his throne,
00:11:31.42\00:11:33.82
and great authority."
00:11:33.86\00:11:35.19
So this beast
combines the characteristics
00:11:35.22\00:11:38.53
of Daniel's four beasts.
00:11:38.56\00:11:40.26
And John lists
them in reverse order.
00:11:40.30\00:11:43.30
Daniel was looking
forward in history,
00:11:43.33\00:11:47.17
John is looking back in history.
00:11:47.20\00:11:49.74
So we see that the dragon
gives this beast his power.
00:11:50.07\00:11:53.81
He invests this beast
as his co-regent on earth.
00:11:53.84\00:11:59.95
And this affirms that the
sea beast is the second member
00:12:00.22\00:12:03.49
of the satanic trinity.
00:12:03.52\00:12:06.76
So from Rome
arose this little power.
00:12:06.79\00:12:10.23
And Revelation 13:3
says, "I saw one of his heads
00:12:10.43\00:12:14.73
as if it had
been mortally wounded,
00:12:14.83\00:12:16.73
and his deadly wound was healed.
00:12:16.77\00:12:19.07
And all the world marveled
and followed the beast."
00:12:19.10\00:12:24.61
Now are you going to be covering
the healing of the deadly wound?

No, go ahead.

Well, I'll just
very quickly say this.

There was a period during the
reformation, the enlightenment,

during the French Revolution
when General Berthier,

who was a French army general,
captured Pope Pious VI in 1798.
00:12:41.62\00:12:51.37
The pope died in exile in 1799.
00:12:51.47\00:12:55.04
This was the close of
that 1260 day prophetic period.
00:12:55.07\00:13:01.11
1260 years from 538 to 1798.
00:13:01.14\00:13:05.88
And remember last time,
that's 42 months, 1260 days,
00:13:05.91\00:13:10.09
time, times, and half a time.
00:13:10.12\00:13:11.62
They're all the same thing.
00:13:11.79\00:13:13.76
So the deadly
wound begins to be healed

when the papal
government is restored.

And it says in Revelation
13:4, "They worshiped the dragon

who gave authority to the beast;

and they worshiped the beast,
saying, 'Who is like the beast?

Who is able to
make war with him?'"

The sea beast is the
counterfeit of Jesus Christ.
00:13:35.41\00:13:38.45
He is the second
member of the trinity.
00:13:38.48\00:13:41.82
And he looks like the
dragon with the seven heads
00:13:42.12\00:13:45.52
and ten horns, just as
Christ represented the Father.
00:13:45.55\00:13:49.26
He said, "If you've seen
the Father, you've seen Me."

The sea beast receives
its authority from the dragon,

just like Christ receives
His authority from the Father.

The sea beast experiences
a death and resurrection

as Christ does.

And the sea beast is in action

for three and a half
prophetic years, 42 months,

just as Christ was for

and activities of the sea beast.

And we'll compare that
with the little horn power

that you referenced
in Daniel chapter 7.

So characteristic number one.

He, meaning the sea
beast, receives his power

from the dragon.

Now I know

I just want to
look at this briefly.

Revelation 13:2 in
the middle of the verse,

dragon gave him..."

So the dragon,
we know, it Satan.

Satan gave the
sea beast his power.

The word is, dunamis.
Miracle working power.

"...his throne,
and great authority."

The word there is, exousia.

Meaning, the
power to act. Authority.

So, I think of another
time in history where the dragon

tried to give someone
his power and his authority.

But this
particular person refused.

Remember the
temptations of Jesus.

Luke 4, this is the second
temptation in the wilderness.

Satan took Jesus
up on a high mountain

and showed Him the
kingdoms of the world.

In Luke 4:6 the devil said to
Jesus, "All this authority..."

The word, exousia,
is used again there.

"All this authority I
will give You, and their glory;

for this has
been delivered to me,
00:15:55.25\00:15:56.75
and I give it to
whomever I wish."

Jesus refused power
and authority from Satan?

We know the power He
had from God the Father

was way more than anything
Satan things he possesses.

But Jesus refused that power.

But the sea beast readily
accepts power from Satan.

Number two, he thinks
to change times and laws.

he changed times and laws.

Because we know
God's law is eternal.

But he thinks to

Roman Catholic Church.

The little horn
"shall speak pompous words

against the Most High,
shall persecute the saints

intend to change times and law."

He thinks to change that.

Now here on this earth,
earthly laws can be changed.

Would you say that's right?

All it takes in the United
States is a brand new president

and a brand new
Congress that steps in,

and they might look to
change some of the laws

that were put in
place previously.

The conflict described
here is not an earthly conflict.

The little horn seeks to
do this against the Most High.

This is a heavenly conflict.

Attempting to
change God's time and law.

And you think about
what in the Word of God,

if you think the
Ten Commandments,

what commandment has
this power sought to change?

That would be the
fourth commandment.

He sought to change
that authority from Sabbath

to worship on Sunday.

Number three, the sea
beast speaks blasphemies.

Look at Revelation 13:5.

"And he was given a
mouth speaking great things

and blasphemies, and
he was given authority
00:17:51.50\00:17:54.34
to continue for
forty-two months."

What is blasphemy?

Blasphemy is claiming to
have power to forgive sins.

Remember the paralytic.
00:18:03.38\00:18:04.71
He was let down
through the roof to Jesus

because he needed healing.
00:18:07.38\00:18:08.72
But Jesus knew more
than the physical healing,

he needed spiritual healing.
00:18:11.09\00:18:13.29
And so Jesus said,
"Your sins are forgiven you."

Well that threw the scribes and
Pharisees into a little tizzy.

Luke 5:21, "The scribes
and Pharisees began to reason,
00:18:19.29\00:18:23.37
saying, 'Who is this
who speaks blasphemies?
00:18:23.40\00:18:25.90
Who can forgive
sins but God alone?'"
