the POWER that God has!

but Acts 13, when the gospel

was resisted even by the
Jews, that Paul and Barnabas

would preaching to in Antioch,
they were seen as earlier

ignorant and
unlearned, but it was obvious

they had been with
Christ... when you listen

to the gospel
they were proclaiming.

Then they get to Antioch on
the Sabbath day, they preach a

powerful sermon, the
people encouraged them,

but the next Sabbath the
whole city comes together,

the Jewish leaders and the
devout men and women of the city

are angry - they
speak blasphemy; they deny

everything they
preached the Sabbath before;

they want to reject
them; put them out of the city.

Paul and Barnabas shook
the dust off of their feet

and they said the gospel
is now going to the Gentiles,

the Gentiles were glad
and they glorified the Lord

and wherever they
were, the word of God

grew and multiplied. Amen!

The devil said - Wait a
minute, this is not working out

the way I think I'd like it to.

And when you study the
life of Paul, you begin to see

even the vision that Peter had.

When Peter had that vision
about the Lord sending him

to Cornelius, there were
so many barriers that the

devil had established.

One of those barriers was
exclusivity - the Jews thought
00:17:48.26\00:17:51.70
that the gospel was
exclusively for them.
00:17:51.73\00:17:53.74
So anybody that wasn't
a Jew, they rejected them.

The Lord had to get
that out of the way by giving
00:17:56.91\00:17:59.11
Peter a vision that said
the gospel is not just for those
00:17:59.14\00:18:02.04
of us who think that we
have the nationality that
00:18:02.08\00:18:04.61
brings gospel exclusivity,
so He had to get him past
00:18:04.65\00:18:07.98
Cornelius who was a Gentile and
the gospel went to the Gentiles.
00:18:08.02\00:18:11.75
But then you have this continued
battle and when we read verse 3,
00:18:11.79\00:18:14.46
we see what's happening now.
00:18:14.49\00:18:16.09
From the glory of the
gospel, the devil now begins to

persecute those who
are receiving the gospel.

Verse 3 of Revelation 6...
"When He opened the second seal,

I heard the second living
creature saying, "Come and see."

It's an introduction.

And another horse, fiery red,
went out. And it was granted

to the one who sat on it
to take peace from the earth

and that people
should kill one another;

Now notice... It
was granted to him

to take peace from the earth.

He was allowed to take peace
which opens the way for people

to kill one another
- he took the peace.

Now what was taking
the peace from the earth?

When Jesus made the statement
in Matthew 10:34, here it is...

Matthew 10:34... "Jesus
said, "Do not think that I came

to bring peace on
the earth; I did not come

to bring peace, but a sword."

And so, when you
look at the picture here,

peace is taken from the
earth, and the Bible says,

at the end of verse
4 of Revelation 6...

"And there was
given him a great sword."

Now watch this...
The sword comes with the
00:19:28.56\00:19:32.60
gospel because the
word of God is the sword.

Wherever the sword of
the gospel is doing its work,

Satan seeks to take
peace from men's hearts.

And when the gospel is
rejected, the natural result

is you lose peace.

That's exactly
what's happening here.

But the reason why it's
also referred to as "red,"

is because many were
dying for their faith.

You read the
chapter of Hebrews 11...

you see that those who
are going through the battles;

it takes you through the
Old Testament and New Testament,

and it said there were
those who chose not to be

delivered because they
didn't seek a better burial,
00:20:05.40\00:20:07.87
they sought a
better resurrection.
00:20:07.90\00:20:09.74
So you see all those
whose lives are being taken,

that's what the
"red" is all about.

But then you go to the third
seal and it says in verse 5-6,

"When He opened the third
seal, I heard the third living
00:20:19.85\00:20:23.55
creature saying... what
did he say? "Come and see."

And I looked and behold
a black horse, and he who
00:20:27.16\00:20:29.79
sat on it had a pair
of scales in his hand.

And I heard a voice in
the midst of the four living

creatures saying, "A
quart of wheat for a denarius,

and three quarts of
barley for a denarius;

and do not harm
the oil and the wine."

The symbolism here is amazing.

Now, when this talks
about the cost of the gospel,

wheat is
synonymous with the gospel.

But all of a sudden barley,
which is not what they ate...

Barley today is
used to make beer!

It was the cheaper of the grain.

Wheat was the good grain.

But what's happening now
is if white is the victory

of the gospel, then
black is the resistance,

the ultimate
resistance against the gospel.

If white represents
the victory of the gospel,

black takes us to that
time when it seems like
00:21:15.60\00:21:19.21
when we talked about one of
the churches, I think Sardis,
00:21:19.24\00:21:21.14
and Thyatira - when
they began to lose faith;
00:21:21.18\00:21:25.25
when they began to wane.
00:21:25.28\00:21:26.68
Ephesus was the
victory of the church,
00:21:26.72\00:21:29.15
then you had the continued...
00:21:29.18\00:21:30.55
But you notice, as the gospel
went on - you talked about the

Emperor Diocletian, 10 years
of tribulation, 303-313 A.D.

People being killed and that's
what is being talked about here.
00:21:39.86\00:21:42.06
So when you look at the seven
churches, some of the seven
00:21:42.10\00:21:45.37
seals are synonymous with that,
00:21:45.40\00:21:47.27
but it's talked
about in a different way.
00:21:47.30\00:21:49.64
And so you have
here... the gospel now under
00:21:49.67\00:21:52.37
persecution, it seems
to be dying out and now,
00:21:52.41\00:21:56.18
it's becoming rare and
anything that's rare becomes
00:21:56.21\00:21:59.55
more expensive.
00:21:59.58\00:22:00.98
What is being said here
is, as opposition increases,
00:22:01.02\00:22:04.89
you've got to make a
decision to be willing
00:22:04.92\00:22:08.96
to give your
life for the gospel.

And so that's going to
come again - we know that
00:22:12.83\00:22:15.30
when we get further in
Revelation, we're going to see
00:22:15.33\00:22:17.23
Revelation 13- I'm not
going to go there today,

but the oil and wine are
basic necessities of life.

Wheat, oil - basic necessities,
but all of a sudden,

you find that these things
are becoming scarce and barley
00:22:29.34\00:22:34.28
is increasing in price.
00:22:34.32\00:22:36.32
And so it's saying...
what goes from a wage that can
00:22:36.35\00:22:40.22
feed an entire
family, now all of a sudden...
00:22:40.26\00:22:42.62
You take a week's
wages to get something
00:22:42.66\00:22:46.53
that is not worth a whole lot.
00:22:46.56\00:22:48.46
The devil starts to get rid
of the gospel and we know even
00:22:48.50\00:22:51.30
during the Dark Ages, we come
to the time of the Dark Ages,
00:22:51.33\00:22:53.77
where the gospel was
almost nonexistent, but God
00:22:53.80\00:22:58.04
did not allow the gospel
to diminish. What happened?

This is exactly what happened...

The scarcity of the
gospel, (and this was predicted
00:23:03.88\00:23:06.72
by the Prophet
Amos) Amos 8:11-12...

"Behold the days are coming,
(the Lord saw this coming)

says the Lord, "That I
will send a famine on the land,

Not a famine of bread,
Nor a thirst for water,

But of the hearing
of the words of God.

They shall wander from sea
to sea, and from north to east;

they shall run to and
fro seeking the word of God,

And that's exactly what was
happening under the red horse.

They were being
killed for the gospel,

now you could hardly find it!

The black horse... where's the
victory? It's not there anymore.

Where's the
gospel? You can't find it.

Because two reasons...

The devil was extinguishing
those proclaiming it...

And secondly, people
were not prizing it as highly

enough - they did not love
their lives unto the death.

And so, therefore, the
oil and wine was missing

and the barley cost more.

the progression of the gospel,

the rider of this white horse?

All of these things are
drawn from the Old Testament,

and they all describe
the reality of what happens

as a consequence of sin.

So let's look at
Revelation 6:7-8,

and this is the fourth seal.

"When He opened the
fourth seal, (who is doing the

the voice of the fourth living

behold a pale horse;

sat on it was Death and Hades

followed with Him.

like a decomposing corpse.

Death, is accompanying Him,

and it says, Hades followed Him.

Hades is just the grave,
is what it's talking about.

It's the abode of the dead.

But they are permitted
to destroy by sword, hunger,

death and wild beasts.

So let's look at Ezekiel
14 because this is where it's

coming from - these are the
four severe judgments of God.

Ezekiel 14:21-23, and
this is what the Lord says...

"How much more it shall
be when I send My four severe

judgments on Jerusalem,
the sword, the famine,

the wild beasts
and pestilence...
00:28:27.97\00:28:31.31
to cut off man
and beast from it?"
00:28:31.34\00:28:34.18
So these are four
severe judgments for their
00:28:34.21\00:28:36.31
unfaithfulness and
disobedience to the covenant.
00:28:36.34\00:28:39.18
And it was intended to
bring Israel to repentance. Yes.

Now let's look at verse
22. "Yet behold, there shall be
00:28:44.72\00:28:49.42
left in it a remnant who
will be brought out, both sons
00:28:49.46\00:28:53.90
and daughters; surely they will
come out to you and you shall
00:28:53.93\00:28:56.93
see their ways and their doings.
00:28:56.97\00:28:58.50
Then you will be comforted
concerning the disaster that I
00:28:58.53\00:29:01.74
have brought upon Jerusalem,
all that I have brought upon it.
00:29:01.77\00:29:04.37
And they will comfort
you, when you see their ways
00:29:05.27\00:29:09.44
(the remnant's ways) and
their doings; and you shall

know that I have done nothing
without cause that I have

So we see that this fourth
horse is a graphic portrayal

that conveys the truth
that rejecting the gospel

brings about
spiritual consequences,

spiritual famine, if you will;
and inevitably spiritual famine
00:29:33.23\00:29:40.38
leads to spiritual death.
00:29:40.41\00:29:42.58
But the good news is that
the power in death and Hades
00:29:42.61\00:29:47.42
are limited - what
did it say in verse 8?
00:29:47.45\00:29:51.72
It says, Power was given to
them over a fourth of the earth.
00:29:51.75\00:29:58.59
You know, Jesus assures
us that He possesses the keys
00:29:58.63\00:30:03.37
of Hades and Death and the
keys are the symbol of power
00:30:03.43\00:30:08.27
or jurisdiction over something.
00:30:08.30\00:30:10.17
In Revelation 1:18, He
says... "I am He who lives,
00:30:10.21\00:30:14.04
was dead and behold,
I am alive forevermore.
00:30:14.08\00:30:17.45
And I have the keys
of Hades and Death."
00:30:17.51\00:30:21.62
And we know, Revelation
tells us, Hades and Death is
00:30:21.65\00:30:24.55
going to have its
end in Revelation 20:14.
00:30:24.59\00:30:27.96
It says that "Death and
Hades were cast... where?
00:30:27.99\00:30:32.03
into the lake of fire...
which is the second death."

So what the Seventh-day
Adventist Bible Commentary

says is that the
scenes of these four horses

revealed, when the scenes
are opened, may be regarded

seals as having both a specific

The scenes of the seven
seals portray the future

of the church and, just
like with the seven churches,

the seven seals
correlate with different periods

So they parallel with
the message to the churches

this indicates that the scene

of the four horsemen actually
extends beyond the first

millennium and it

was the antichrist
because they're seeing it from

that the white horse is
