The Book of Revelation, a
book of symbolism, deep thought,

show us for these last days,

earlier, we have made it through

three chapters - we just
came out of a series of studies

on the "Seven
Churches of Asia Minor,"

and now we're making our way
into the "Throne Room of God,"

and this week's
lesson, Lesson #4 is entitled:

"Worthy Is the Lamb"

And I want to go right to our
memory text which is going to be

with verse 5 and the Bible says:

Lion of the tribe of Judah,

Lion of the tribe of Judah,

who that Lion is in just a few

moments as we progress through
this study and we get into

Revelation 5.

But before we get into
Revelation 5, we're going to

briefly mention a few
things from Sabbath afternoon

afternoon's lesson is actually

for what we are about to see

And so the scene of chapters
4 and 5 symbolically portray

God's control of history
and of the plan of salvation...

And while we have been
focusing on the Book of

Revelation from the
earthly perspective through

chapters 1-3, it kind of
seems like the attention,

the focus is brought down
here to earth - what's happening
00:04:09.18\00:04:12.28
with God's people through
the different church ages,
00:04:12.31\00:04:15.42
but now, we're going to
kind of jump out of that scene
00:04:15.45\00:04:19.22
and now we're going
to be re-focused into
00:04:19.25\00:04:21.19
the heavenly sanctuary.
00:04:21.22\00:04:22.56
And it's interesting because
it seems like the symbolic
00:04:22.59\00:04:25.39
language picks up a
little thicker as you start in
00:04:25.43\00:04:28.13
Revelation 4, go on to chapter
5, especially as you get into
00:04:28.16\00:04:31.90
seals and the
trumpets which we will cover
00:04:31.93\00:04:34.00
in the near future.

But I want us to go
ahead and launch us right into

Sunday's lesson because there's
so much to talk about here,

here that I wish I could cover

going to highlight the most

I want to start
with Revelation 4:1.

Notice what the Bible says...
"After these things I looked,

and behold, a door
standing open in heaven. And the

first voice which I heard
was like a trumpet speaking

with me saying, "Come up
here (so notice the "come

UP here," not just "come
up here, so his attention is
00:05:13.48\00:05:15.71
being drawn upward) and I
will show you things which
00:05:15.74\00:05:18.75
must take place after this."
00:05:18.78\00:05:21.32
I love this verse, it kind
of really sets the tone because
00:05:21.35\00:05:24.45
now we can see kind of in a
directional sense that John's
00:05:24.49\00:05:27.56
attention as said earlier,
has been focused on what's going
00:05:27.59\00:05:30.33
on here on earth through the
different churches right here
00:05:30.36\00:05:33.60
on planet earth, but now
God is drawing his attention
00:05:33.63\00:05:36.20
upward and he is
peering through this open door
00:05:36.23\00:05:38.97
and he is going to
actually be able to glimpse
00:05:39.00\00:05:42.14
into the
heavenly sanctuary of God.
00:05:42.17\00:05:44.41
And has to be a privilege
for John because not many of the
00:05:44.44\00:05:47.44
prophets had this opportunity.
00:05:47.48\00:05:49.34
Just a few mentioned
here. Moses - we know Moses was
00:05:49.38\00:05:52.41
taken in vision into vision
into the heavenly sanctuary
00:05:52.45\00:05:55.38
of God; another comes to mind,
Isaiah, Ezekiel the prophet,
00:05:55.42\00:05:59.52
Daniel was even given visions,
and now John has the privilege
00:05:59.55\00:06:02.79
of being ushered in, in vision,
into God's very presence.
00:06:02.82\00:06:07.13
Notice Revelation 4:2-3...
"Immediately I was in the
00:06:07.23\00:06:14.14
Spirit and behold a
throne set in heaven,
00:06:14.17\00:06:17.97
and One sat on the
throne; and He who sat there was
00:06:18.01\00:06:23.14
like a jasper and
sardius stone in appearance.
00:06:23.18\00:06:27.42
And there was a rainbow
around the throne in appearance
00:06:27.45\00:06:30.89
like an emerald."
00:06:30.92\00:06:32.92
And so, obviously, as we
go through the context of this
00:06:32.95\00:06:36.73
particular passage, you will
see that this figure, who is
00:06:36.76\00:06:39.86
sitting on the throne is none
other than the Father Himself.

We know that as we get
over into Revelation 5, the Lamb

comes into the scene, so
we know this isn't Jesus,

this has to be the
Father, and I thought it to be

interesting because
many people would say...
00:06:52.07\00:06:54.24
"Oh John got to see the
Father," but actually we know
00:06:54.28\00:06:57.71
that the Scriptures
told us that no man has seen
00:06:57.75\00:06:59.91
God, and so actually what
John is looking at here is
00:07:00.05\00:07:02.78
not God Himself, but the
glory of God and it's mentioned
00:07:02.82\00:07:06.49
here in reference to
this jasper and sardius stone.

And if you've ever seen
a jasper and sardius stone,
00:07:10.89\00:07:13.26
you know that... it's
interesting, they're very
00:07:13.29\00:07:14.76
similar - jasper is reddish
in color with black veins,
00:07:14.83\00:07:18.23
and the sardius stone
also reddish in color,
00:07:18.27\00:07:20.44
but with white veins.
00:07:20.47\00:07:21.80
So I can't even begin to
imagine as the Bible tells us,
00:07:21.84\00:07:24.21
you know, eyes have not
seen, ears have not heard,
00:07:24.24\00:07:26.78
nor has it
entered into the heart of
00:07:26.81\00:07:28.14
man what God
has prepared for us.
00:07:28.18\00:07:29.51
We see this but yet we
don't see it and to see what
00:07:29.54\00:07:32.71
John has seen, I
don't even know that
00:07:32.75\00:07:34.12
John was even in vision able to
00:07:34.15\00:07:35.55
see the fullness of the glory
of God, but he saw something
00:07:35.58\00:07:38.65
that was amazing that
captivated his attention.

Revelation 4:4,
notice what it says here...

"Around the throne were
24 thrones and on the thrones
00:07:45.83\00:07:50.63
I saw 24 elders sitting, clothed
in white robes and they had
00:07:50.67\00:07:57.21
crowns of gold on their head."
00:07:57.27\00:07:59.91
Now this is an interesting topic
because this could launch us
00:07:59.94\00:08:04.18
into a whole nother study on
the 24 elders - who are they?
00:08:04.21\00:08:08.52
And, I have done some
study on this over the years,
00:08:08.55\00:08:11.32
I'm sure, as all of us have,
studied this 24 elders topic.
00:08:11.35\00:08:14.46
Now there are two suggestions
00:08:14.49\00:08:15.82
as to the identity
of these 24 elders.
00:08:15.86\00:08:17.56
I'm not going to go into
that particularly because I
00:08:17.59\00:08:19.83
know that I think
Pastor Kenny is going to
00:08:19.86\00:08:21.86
tell us exactly who this
is, but I'm just going to
00:08:21.90\00:08:23.57
throw out the two
possible suggestions that have
00:08:23.60\00:08:25.80
been thrown out there
and that is... they could be
00:08:25.83\00:08:28.70
created beings from other
worlds that have not sinned;
00:08:28.74\00:08:31.44
the beings from
other fallen worlds
00:08:31.47\00:08:33.41
that are mentioned in
Scripture and, of course,
00:08:33.48\00:08:35.01
the second option... they are
the ones who were resurrected
00:08:35.04\00:08:37.78
at the time of
Christ's resurrection and were
00:08:37.81\00:08:39.55
taken to heaven as
mentioned in Matthew 27:52-53,

as well as Ephesians 4:8.

is going to take us

But it's interesting to
know what John is seeing here.

God, He is seeing all of these

amazing colors, this
beautiful amazing rainbow...

communication of the wonderful

promise that we have in God,
and then, of course, now he's

seeing these 24 thrones
with 24 beings sitting on them,

with the 24 different
crowns upon their head.

It's incredible
what he is seeing here.

I want to go on to
verse 5 because we are running

out of time quickly.

It says..."And from the
throne proceeded lightnings,
00:09:20.02\00:09:23.19
thunderings, and voices.
00:09:23.22\00:09:25.29
Seven lamps of fire were
burning before the throne,
00:09:25.33\00:09:28.20
which are the
seven Spirits of God."
00:09:28.23\00:09:31.43
Now there's already been
a mentioning of the seven
00:09:31.47\00:09:33.37
Spirits of God already in
some of our previous studies,
00:09:33.44\00:09:36.71
but here it is
again... and we see that these

lightnings, these
thunderings... what are these?

What are these
voices? What are these

lightnings? What
are these thunderings?

Now I was doing a
little bit of studying on this,

and I actually did not
know this until I was studying

this particular subject...

I found in "Great Controversy,"
p.512 as well as the fifth
00:09:50.62\00:09:54.16
volume of the "Testimonies,"
p.754, Mrs. White makes mention
00:09:54.19\00:09:58.89
that the lightnings which
you see there appearing before
00:09:58.93\00:10:01.90
the throne are actually
(get this) represents the speed
00:10:01.93\00:10:05.60
in which the angels and the
creatures perform God's work.
00:10:05.63\00:10:09.10
So that's powerful!
00:10:09.14\00:10:10.77
And then, of course, the
thunderings and the voices
00:10:10.81\00:10:13.24
are those from the four
living creatures praising God.

And a good reference to
that would be Ezekiel 3:12-13,

so not only is he seeing,
he's hearing all of these

incredible sounds that you
and I probably can't even begin

to fathom or imagine
exactly what it is that John is

seeing, but you know,
we're going to try to imagine

the best that we can.

I want to move on to verse
6 and 7, it says in verse 6...
00:10:33.96\00:10:39.23
"Before the throne, there
was a sea of glass like crystal,
00:10:39.27\00:10:43.94
and in the midst of the
throne and around the throne
00:10:43.97\00:10:47.81
were four living creatures full
of eyes in front and in back."

Now I have to admit when I
read this, every time I read it,

it's like.. what in the
world? That's an interesting
00:10:57.45\00:11:00.16
thing to see - these interesting
creatures with eyes on
00:11:00.19\00:11:03.32
the front and in the back...
00:11:03.36\00:11:04.76
When I've done little
bit of studying, the beast

are the living
creatures around the throne,
00:11:07.00\00:11:09.33
closely resembled those in
Ezekiel's vision which they are
00:11:09.36\00:11:13.07
called actually "cherubims."
00:11:13.10\00:11:14.94
These are the cherubims that
are around the throne of God
00:11:14.97\00:11:17.57
day and night and we're going
to see in just a few moments,
00:11:17.61\00:11:19.91
they are chanting, they are
praying, they're praising God
00:11:19.94\00:11:22.44
all the time and they are
described as being, of course,
00:11:22.48\00:11:25.78
full of eyes, as we mentioned
on the front and the back,

and this could be understood as
a symbol as their intelligence

and watchfulness as
mentioned there in Ezekiel 10.

So these are not just
some random interesting-looking

beings, they are intelligent
beings that serve a purpose.

Revelation 4:7, let's continue
on... "The first living creature

was like a lion, the second
living creature like a calf,

the third living
creature had a face like a man,

and the fourth living creature
was like a flying eagle.

four living creatures with the

these could actually represent,

Christ pre-incarnation.

A lion is a symbol
of strength and royalty,

with the calf could represent

the incarnation of Christ;
of course, oxen were used

as sacrificial beasts throughout
the sanctuary services,

the Old Testament.

Of course, the face of a
man could represent Christ's

high priestly ministry
for us in heaven and as the

Son of Man, He intercedes on
our behalf before the Father,

as according to Hebrews 4.

come down here to this last one

which is the face of an
eagle, very interesting.

the four different camps

was, of course, a man;

and Dan was an eagle.

I mean there's so much symbolism
here and I'm getting down

seconds, but I want to mention

here in the last

That the scene that
is actually happening,

is happening in the Holy
Place of the heavenly sanctuary.

There's plenty of evidence
for that as we've seen here

we're going to see in chapter 5.

But Revelation 5:8-11, I
want to just read the last

Monday's lesson, "The Heavenly
Assembly in the Throne Room"

How big can this throne room be?

intelligence, everything

gathering together, you
know, God is big, God is mighty,

nothing is too small,
nothing is too big for Him.

But yet, what a throne
room this is, and as you read

in Revelation 4:4, it
says, around that throne,

we have to realize around
that throne, was talking about

there's 4 and 20 elders,
and again, you talked about

the different concepts
that different people have about
00:14:58.49\00:15:02.13
the 4 and 20 elders.
00:15:02.16\00:15:04.27
But notice they were sitting
clothed in white raiments,
00:15:04.30\00:15:06.97
they had on their
head crowns of gold.
00:15:07.04\00:15:09.40
All of a sudden,
that sounds good to me.

Number one sounds real good
because they're there in heaven.
00:15:11.44\00:15:14.38
And then they have the white
robes on, then they had the

me in the Book of Isaiah

in a Lexicon so as you read it,

He shall reign and before the

So this is part of the
big battle that's going on,

for a little bit of a fresh

the great controversy,
the great getting together

Great challenge -

of who should be in charge.

This is what it's all about...
Who is going to be in charge?

And so they're all coming around

here is described as a Lamb,

notice, and seven eyes,

"Why use symbolism here?"

that killed 180,000
men, but now it introduces

proclaiming with a loud voice,

that's gotta be resonating...
I could imagine worlds

that are out of sight,
are saying, "did you just

hear that?" Can you
imagine, unfallen worlds...

The strong angel with a
mighty voice is proclaiming

and he's asking the
question, "Who is worthy to open

the scroll and to loose

like the Magellan Spacecraft,
John lands in the midst

of a scene with this question
resonating and the crowd is

looking for an answer...
Who is worthy to open...

And then verse 3 says, "And
no one in heaven or on the earth

or under the earth was able to
open the scroll or look at it.

Now let's pause... "No
one in heaven" - because

Jesus is not there
yet, "no one on earth,"

because He's no longer there
and no one "under the earth"

because He is not in the
grave anymore. That's right.

He's not walking on the earth,

because there's a crowd
