Well this lesson, we are going
to look at "Images of Unity,"

that are presented to us in
the Bible and our memory text is

from 1 Corinthians 12:12,
that says, "For as the body

is one and has many members,
but all the members of that
00:03:11.29\00:03:16.62
one body, being many, are
one body, so also is Christ."

So what is it saying - Christ
is the head of the church,
00:03:23.33\00:03:26.40
the body of Christ is the
church, many, many members.

You know, the Bible is
filled with symbols and images

that point to something greater
than what they're actually
00:03:34.11\00:03:39.05
referring to and when we
think about the Old Testament,

God had them build a
sanctuary so that He could
00:03:42.58\00:03:46.55
dwell among them and
the sanctuary was theology
00:03:46.59\00:03:51.13
in physical form and we
have all of these beautiful
00:03:51.16\00:03:54.76
symbols and images,
but what did they point to?
00:03:54.80\00:03:57.37
What did everything
about the sanctuary point to?
00:03:57.40\00:04:01.10
To Jesus Christ... so what we
find is that there's different
00:04:01.14\00:04:06.54
symbols and images in our
study that we'll look at today.

For example, sometimes the Holy
Spirit is referred to as wind...

That makes sense
because in the Old Testament
00:04:16.48\00:04:20.66
"ruach" was spirit and in
the New Testament it's "pneuma."

Both mean "breath"
or "wind" or "spirit."

And in John 3:8, it
says, this is Jesus speaking...

"The wind blows where it wishes,
you hear the sound of it,

but cannot tell where it
comes from or where it goes.

So is everyone who
is born of the Spirit."

So we see wind and
Spirit are associated.

And then in John 7, again Jesus
speaking in verses 37-39...

It says... "On the last
day, the great day of the feast,

Jesus stood and cried
out, saying, "If anyone thirsts

let him come to Me..."

"He who believes in Me,
as the Scripture hath said,

out of his belly will flow...
(out of his heart) will flow
00:05:03.40\00:05:08.44
streams of living water,
and it says, "This He spoke

concerning the Spirit."

So we see now "water" is used
as a symbol of the Holy Spirit.

And in Matthew 3:11,
John the Baptist said that

"I baptize you with
water, He'll baptize you
00:05:26.82\00:05:30.83
with the Holy Spirit and fire."

So we see fire and when
the Holy Spirit fell on them at
00:05:33.33\00:05:36.70
Pentecost, it was with
tongues of fire - so we see that
00:05:36.73\00:05:40.50
as a symbol as well.

And God even said
through Jeremiah or to Jeremiah,

"Is not My word like a
fire, it's like a hammer that
00:05:45.71\00:05:50.08
breaks the rocks into pieces."

So the Bible uses various
terms to describe the unity

that the New
Testament Church has.
00:05:59.79\00:06:01.66
It says that, "We are
the household of God,"
00:06:01.69\00:06:04.59
you know, we're living stones.
00:06:04.63\00:06:06.70
We're the temple
of the Holy Spirit;
00:06:06.73\00:06:08.50
we're the body of Christ.
00:06:08.53\00:06:10.03
It refers to us as "sheep,"
and Him as the Shepherd,
00:06:10.07\00:06:16.10
and I'm laughing because if
anybody has ever herded sheep,
00:06:16.14\00:06:19.57
you know you gotta be
smarter than the sheep!
00:06:19.61\00:06:22.04
And, sheep can be pretty
stubborn little critters,

but combined all of
these symbols and images

what they represent is
the church's relationship

to God; the members'
relationship to one another,

and the church's relationship
to the community as a whole.

So God is calling us to manifest
this unity to the world.

And in this week's
lesson, we're going to look

images and what they reveal

about the unity of
the body of Christ.

at the special status

of the people of God.

We'll begin with 1 Peter
2:9, Peter writes saying...

"You are a chosen
generation, a royal priesthood,

a holy nation, his own special
people, (for what purpose?)

that you may proclaim
the praises of Him who

called you out of darkness
into His marvelous light..."

In the Greek, "chosen
generation" is literally

"an elect race," we
are spiritual Israel
00:07:35.15\00:07:40.29
through the new birth - that
is who we are as a corporate

unity.

"A royal
priesthood," who is our king?

Jesus Christ is the King,
and collectively, the church...

we are a company of priests
who are called to offer up

spiritual sacrifices
of praise and worship.

This is a supreme
privilege, but we're also to do

the intermediary work as
a priest; working, praying

for others, bringing them...
you know, among the nations,

this is what the purpose of the
church is, but what is Peter...

Turn to Exodus 19:4-6...
because we see when Peter

is saying, "You're a
chosen generation," he is

referencing an Old Testament
Scripture - one that I love...

Exodus 19:4-6, and what I
love about this passage is
00:08:35.48\00:08:41.32
it shows the
covenant love of God.
00:08:41.38\00:08:44.85
Listen to what He says -
this is before He even speaks

the Ten
Commandments to His people.
00:08:48.22\00:08:49.99
He has opened the Red
Sea; they have passed through,
00:08:50.03\00:08:53.70
they're out at the
foot of Mount Sinai.
00:08:53.73\00:08:56.20
And listen to what He says...
"You have seen what I did

to the Egyptians, and how
I bore you on eagles' wings

and brought you to
Myself. ( boy, this is covenant

love language - He saved
them before He even spoke

the Ten commandments to them)

And He says, "Now therefore,
if you will indeed (they're

saved - they're out of
Egypt) ... if you will indeed

obey My voice and keep My
covenant, then you shall be

a special treasure
to Me above all people;

Mine. And you shall be to Me a

and a holy nation."

These are the words which you

So now turn to Revelation 1
and we'll look at verses 5-6

because we see that the
privileges and responsibilities

of Israel in the Old
Testament had been transferred

to the church - now all of
us united - Jews, Gentiles,

no race barriers - now
we are all that holy nation

in the kingdom of priests.
00:10:12.84\00:10:14.64
And this is Jesus
speaking in Revelation 1:5...

It says, "...from Jesus
Christ, the faithful witness,
00:10:18.18\00:10:21.02
the firstborn from the
dead, the ruler over the kings
00:10:21.05\00:10:24.29
of the earth. To Him
who loved us and washed us
00:10:24.32\00:10:26.65
from our sins in His
own blood, He has made us
00:10:26.69\00:10:30.29
kings (and it's John speaking,
but he's talking of Jesus)
00:10:30.33\00:10:34.46
He has made us what?
Kings and priests to His
00:10:34.50\00:10:39.17
God and Father, to
Him be glory and dominion
00:10:39.20\00:10:43.20
forever and ever. Amen."

So halleluiah! We
are a chosen generation,

a royal priesthood - what does
it mean to be a holy nation?

What does it mean to be holy?

To be holy means to be
set aside for God's purposes,

so He is saying that not only
He has separated us from sin,

but He has separated us
to worship the one true God.

And, you know, we're
not separated by boundaries.

we find part of our church.

We would go to an Adventist
Church anywhere in the world,

and there's this common unity
and there's family, I mean,

immediately you walk into
the place filled with strangers,

but they're your
brothers and sisters in Christ,

and we're a holy nation...
this overcomes cultural

and the language barriers.

His own special people!

Now the King James version
says... "peculiar people,"

but it's not peculiar
in the means of strange.

The literal Greek here, when it
says "His own special people,"

it means we are a
people, we are God's possession.

See, you are bought with a
price, you were bought with

the precious life-blood of
Jesus Christ and that makes

talking about giving waters

in the desert and He says...

"This people I
have formed for Myself

And we were called out of
darkness into His marvelous

light, you know - you
have to agree, we walked in

darkness - the darkness
was also in us - was it not?

So we are children of the light;

we are to walk as
children of the light.

That means we should
have a holy and useful life;

a life with
purpose to serve God.

something that if you don't

greatest ministry is?

It is the ministry of
intercession because that is

the ministry of our risen
and exalted Savior - He stands

Father making intercession

for us - so this is
something that you can do.

Now when God brought His
people... and I'm going to have

When God chose the
people of Israel to be His own

number than any other people

So He looked down in love
and He chose a group of people

seeing a church where
people are just coming together

and it's like a little
country club or something

and they don't
reach out to others.

He brought them, He selected
them so that they could go out

and spread His light,
that they could reflect

His love, light and life
in the community and that they

could introduce people
to the promised Messiah,

the promise of the Messiah.

And God is calling us
today to do the same thing,

we are the body of

expression here on earth

stones, are being built up a

spiritual house, a

there for a moment...

And so we have here a
continuing of what you were

sharing about priesthood
and Jesus is a lively stone,

be lively stones here.

You know, you think normally
a stone is... well, it's

just a stone -
it's dead, you know.

People kick it
around, people throw it,

but the Bible
uses a "lively stone,"
00:17:08.36\00:17:11.89
and a spiritual house
and we are a household

of believers in Christ.

Now when you think
of a stone and a house,

and today we would say
"Well, bricks," you know.

If you were to build a
house and just put bricks

one on top of the other
and you don't put anything

between them, nothing
holds them together...

And you think of
brick and mortar,

this is helping us to understand
that we are united together

through Jesus Christ
and together, we are a

stones and what are we to do?

Now this gets us to the
next verse which is verse 6...

"Therefore it is also
contained in the Scriptures,

"Behold, I lay in Zion a
chief cornerstone, elect,

precious, And he who
believes on Him will by no means

be put to shame.
Therefore, to you who believe

He is precious; (Jesus is
precious to us) but to those

"The stone which the builders

of stumbling and a rock of

us, who are believers,

Jesus is precious,
why is Jesus precious?

Oh man, I could spend a
long time talking about this

because Jesus is precious
to us - when you think about

what He has done for us...
to come to this wicked world,

years ago, they were talking

about - I'll mention the country

taking place in Mexico for a

But Jesus Christ
came to this wicked world,

sin and He lived among us,

us human beings and He lived
and suffered and died here.

When you think about how
