As I looked over the lesson,
I want to just begin with

do not pray for these alone, but

It's very interesting how
the text begins because the Lord

gives one of the key elements
of oneness right off the bat.

That is We, that He may be
in the Father and the Father

may be in Him and in
some sense, we have the

obligation when Jesus
addresses His concerns,

we have the obligation, as
Christians, to do everything

Remember Jesus, all through His
ministry, He said, "I did not

how unity is interrupted,

There's so much power
in the person of Christ,

human flesh by stepping down

And then He spent 3-1/2
years in this earth training,

calling and equipping
His disciples to do a work

and then when you think of
His preexistence from eternity,

in the slightest way defeating

accomplish and not in thought,

and then He comes forth from the

then He thinks to Himself...

the youngest one, the one whom

Jesus loved - he was a
tender one growing up to be

the catalyst for
the Book of Revelation.

the different characters

that were there represented
in the twelve and I would

have thought to
myself... "I'm really

concerned whether or not
there's going to be unity here."

And so John 17 is the creed,

it is the buttress of unity.

I'm looking for a particular
word that will come to me,

midstream and I'll just
blurt it out, but right now

it can't come to the forefront.

Let's look at John
17:1-5, it's the armada; yes,

it's the armada of unity.

John 17:1-5...
"Jesus spoke these words,

lifted up His eyes to heaven,
and said, "Father the hour
00:07:13.26\00:07:17.07
has come. Glorify Your
Son, that Your Son also

may glorify You,
as You have given Him
00:07:21.74\00:07:25.14
authority over all flesh,
that He should give eternal
00:07:25.17\00:07:28.41
life, to as many
as You have given Him.

And this is eternal
life, that they may know You,

the only true God and
Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

preexistence of Christ

So the concerns Jesus had,
the person who constructed the

lesson or the committee
that put the lesson together,

these different areas.

The prayer that Jesus
prayed about concerning His

followers were
contained in His concern about

His betrayal and death.

Now we know that before
the cross, He had a concern

about His betrayal and death
and the concern was not that

He was going to be
betrayed, He knew was - that was
00:08:28.74\00:08:30.97
prefigured in writings of
the Old Testament prophets;

"The one who is My friend,
He will betray Me" - that was a
00:08:34.91\00:08:38.88
prophecy that
had to come to pass.

But He was concerned because the
Bible says, "Woe unto the one

who betrays Me,
it's better that that
00:08:43.75\00:08:45.12
person hadn't been born."
00:08:45.15\00:08:46.79
So that betrayal was a
concern He had, then also His
00:08:46.82\00:08:49.82
High Priestly work that He was
going to participate in after He
00:08:49.86\00:08:54.73
finished His work on earth
as the Man walking the road
00:08:54.76\00:08:58.33
to the cross of Calvary,
then He continued His ministry,
00:08:58.37\00:09:02.57
but in His absence, now
He has to entrust the word
00:09:02.60\00:09:06.21
or the work to
frail human beings.
00:09:06.24\00:09:09.61
So He prays about His
high priestly function
00:09:09.64\00:09:14.62
in the absence of His disciples.

He's praying not for
His function but for them.

The other one, His
prayer of consecration

for His sacrifice; His concern
for unity among believers,

and these are all the
concerns that the church had
00:09:27.23\00:09:29.16
in the New Testament.

His prayer of
consecration on behalf of those

who will eventually believe.

Can you imagine - Jesus
is praying for those who will

eventually believe and they

haven't even
heard the message yet.

And we've come to
discover that some of those,

even the Nicodemus that came
to Christ - the one that came

to the Lord by night, Nicodemus,

he became an ardent
supporter of evangelism

in the New Testament.
00:09:53.62\00:09:54.96
He financed some of
the evangelistic series.

He became the
person that stood strongly
00:09:57.16\00:09:59.19
behind the advancement
of the gospel, but he needed
00:09:59.23\00:10:02.00
an encounter with Christ first.
00:10:02.03\00:10:03.87
And then Jesus prayed for those
that the Father will give Him.

And this I want to make
clear - is not a statement
00:10:08.10\00:10:11.17
of predestination
because people have read that
00:10:11.21\00:10:13.17
and said, "Okay, the Father
is picking who is to be saved
00:10:13.21\00:10:15.38
and who is to be lost? No...
00:10:15.41\00:10:17.38
Because we have all been
predestined to be sons and
00:10:17.41\00:10:20.22
daughters of God,
can we get an Amen? Amen!
00:10:20.25\00:10:22.55
So the Lord has made every
provision for every one of us
00:10:22.58\00:10:24.55
to be saved and that's what
the Emancipation Proclamation

is all about... you've been set
free, you just have to accept

the Emancipation Proclamation.

And I heard the story
about a slave that had been

declared free, but
because they didn't get it from

the person that
had them in slavery,

they just continued working.

And we have been given the
"Emancipation Proclamation"

through the risen Savior. Amen!

But what I want to
bring out very carefully here,

and I'd like us to
turn now to John 17:3,

I think, to me, if
there's a beautiful passage

in the Bible in the
Book of John chapter 17,

I would say this to me is one
of the central focuses in the
00:11:03.29\00:11:06.39
life of Christ because a lot
of times we think eternal life
00:11:06.43\00:11:09.56
is a doctrine -
"eternal life" is a person.
00:11:09.60\00:11:15.20
Let's look at that, John 17:3...
00:11:15.24\00:11:17.57

He knew that there
would be contentions and the

apostles contended with
more than one false god.

So He made it clear,
"When you go and proclaim,
00:11:51.97\00:11:54.74
proclaim the ONLY true
God," and Shelley and Jill,

I just singled you both
out because you know, I know

you love the Book of Romans,
and the Apostle Paul made it

very clear in the
very beginning of the

Book of Romans, "I desire
to know nothing but... what?

"Christ and Him crucified."

He made it clear
this is My mission.

And then in the Book of John...
this is something that I heard

was amazed by this and I did

words that came out continually

John... "know" and "believe."

"Know" and "believe."
Those words are repeated

repetitiously "know"
and "believe" that you might

know and in
knowing, you might believe.

And both of those
are encased in John 3:16,

know and believe."

But let's look at the
gift of eternal life...

eternal life - first as a gift.

life is not the gift of God,

it's the gift "God."

And God is the gift! Yes

He's not just
saying, "Here's a gift."

He's saying, "Isn't that
the proclamation that was

given about the
coming of Christ?"

Emanuel" meaning, "God with us."

He came to give us God, He
came to show us the Father,

and so when we come
into this one relationship

only receiving the GIFT

that is eternal life, but we're
receiving the Person of God,

embraces eternal life.

Secondly, eternal
life is an appointment.

life is an appointment."

Thirdly, eternal
life is our hope.

the acknowledgment of the

So, thirdly...
eternal life is a hope.
