Being therefore 00:02:26.51\00:02:31.25 exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from 00:02:31.28\00:02:35.78 the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured out 00:02:35.82\00:02:40.66 this that you both see and hear." 00:02:40.72\00:02:44.19 There were three main festivals that the Jews celebrated 00:02:44.23\00:02:48.96 that were associated with different harvests. 00:02:49.00\00:02:53.97 On the first day after Passover, they would wave 00:02:54.00\00:02:56.50 the barley sheaf because the barley came ripe first, 00:02:56.54\00:03:00.21 and then on the fiftieth day from waving the barley sheaf, 00:03:00.28\00:03:03.65 the Jewish community celebrated the Feast of Weeks 00:03:03.68\00:03:08.02 which was also known as the Feast of the Firstfruits. 00:03:08.05\00:03:12.39 In the Greek, the word "Pentecost" means "fiftieth." 00:03:12.42\00:03:16.76 It's the Greek name of the Jewish Feast of Weeks. 00:03:16.83\00:03:20.43 This was a day of joy and thanksgiving and it was 00:03:20.50\00:03:24.90 when Israel brought the firstfruits of the 00:03:24.93\00:03:27.70 wheat harvest before the Lord. 00:03:27.74\00:03:29.64 When Jesus was resurrected, He spent 40 days 00:03:31.51\00:03:35.34 with His apostles and His disciples and then He 00:03:35.38\00:03:38.61 ascended 40 days after His resurrection... 00:03:38.65\00:03:42.58 according to Acts 1:3, but 10 days after His ascension, 00:03:42.62\00:03:49.06 and His exaltation in heaven, the outpouring of the 00:03:49.09\00:03:53.13 Holy Spirit totally changed the disciples' life. 00:03:53.16\00:03:57.73 It turned men that were fearful and prideful into men of courage 00:03:57.77\00:04:03.74 of great conviction and they would change the world. 00:04:03.81\00:04:09.44 Pentecost was a sudden and very supernatural event, 00:04:09.48\00:04:15.15 and this Feast of the Firstfruits became fitting 00:04:15.18\00:04:22.06 for the spiritual harvest of the Christian Church. 00:04:22.09\00:04:25.19 Three thousand people were baptized in a single day, 00:04:25.23\00:04:29.36 and I think Mollie is going to cover that for us. 00:04:29.40\00:04:31.60 But many people think that Pentecost 00:04:31.63\00:04:33.70 as the birthday of the church. 00:04:33.74\00:04:36.57 So I have Sunday's, "The Coming of the Spirit" 00:04:36.60\00:04:40.98 In Acts 1:4-5, the coming of the Spirit is described 00:04:41.01\00:04:45.25 as the promise of the Father... 00:04:45.28\00:04:50.25 they had heard from Jesus and that which John the Baptist 00:04:50.29\00:04:53.82 had foretold. 00:04:53.86\00:04:55.19 But all the disciples were waiting in the upper room, 00:04:55.22\00:04:58.09 120 of them, in obedience to Christ's command to 00:04:58.13\00:05:01.96 WAIT until the power was poured out from on high. 00:05:02.00\00:05:06.87 And they were assembled together in fervent prayer, 00:05:06.94\00:05:10.74 10 days of fervent prayer and sincere repentance and praise. 00:05:10.81\00:05:15.71 So let's look at Acts 2 and were going to read verses 1-3: 00:05:15.74\00:05:21.58 "When the day of Pentecost had fully come, 00:05:21.62\00:05:24.89 they were all with one accord, in one place and suddenly 00:05:24.92\00:05:29.89 there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, 00:05:29.92\00:05:35.73 and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 00:05:35.80\00:05:38.20 Then there appeared to them, it looked like to them, 00:05:38.23\00:05:41.74 divided tongues as on fire, and one sat on each of them." 00:05:41.80\00:05:49.14 So the coming of the Holy Spirit is a unique... this day of 00:05:49.18\00:05:54.18 Pentecost is a unique moment in time, moment in the history 00:05:54.22\00:05:59.79 of the church and the phenomena of the wind and fire 00:05:59.82\00:06:03.96 were signs of God's presence. 00:06:03.99\00:06:06.86 You know, in Scripture often what is called a theophany, 00:06:06.93\00:06:12.07 is a manifestation of the Lord and wind and fire 00:06:12.10\00:06:16.60 were frequently associated with that, I think of Exodus 3:2, 00:06:16.64\00:06:21.48 where the angel of the Lord appeared in a bush. 00:06:21.51\00:06:25.25 It was as fire - the bush was burning with that fire, 00:06:25.28\00:06:29.55 but it didn't burn up. 00:06:29.58\00:06:30.92 I think of Exodus 19:18, when God was speaking 00:06:30.99\00:06:36.16 the Ten Commandments in Israel and He descended on the mountain 00:06:36.19\00:06:42.00 as fire, or Exodus 13:21, when God's presence was a 00:06:42.03\00:06:48.44 pillar of fire with them throughout the night. 00:06:48.47\00:06:51.57 There was a cloud by day and a fire through the night. 00:06:51.61\00:06:54.28 But, let's look at some symbols or the places in the Scripture 00:06:54.31\00:07:00.18 where wind and fire are used for the Holy Spirit. 00:07:00.25\00:07:02.68 CA, could you read for us John 3:8; 00:07:02.72\00:07:06.02 Mollie, will you take Matthew 3:11; 00:07:06.05\00:07:09.56 and Jill, Luke 3:16; and Johnny, Acts 1:8. 00:07:09.59\00:07:17.27 John 3:8, The Bible says, "The wind blows where it wishes, 00:07:17.30\00:07:21.77 I think the King James says "listed," 00:07:21.80\00:07:23.54 and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where 00:07:23.61\00:07:27.28 it comes from and where it goes. 00:07:27.31\00:07:30.38 So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." 00:07:30.45\00:07:34.02 So here we see the Holy Spirit is associated with 00:07:34.05\00:07:36.89 wind as a symbol. 00:07:36.92\00:07:38.85 And Matthew 3:11, Okay... "I indeed baptize you with 00:07:38.89\00:07:43.53 water unto repentance, but He that cometh after me 00:07:43.56\00:07:46.83 is mightier than I whose shoes I am not worthy to bear. 00:07:46.90\00:07:51.23 He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire." 00:07:51.27\00:07:56.14 The Holy Spirit and fire, so here we see fire used 00:07:56.17\00:08:00.74 as a symbol for the Holy Spirit, and you know, we know 00:08:00.81\00:08:04.85 that the Holy Spirit worked throughout the Old Testament 00:08:04.88\00:08:09.22 and even in the New. 00:08:09.25\00:08:10.65 His influence was felt upon people, but never 00:08:10.72\00:08:15.29 in His fullness did He come until Pentecost. 00:08:15.32\00:08:19.19 Luke 3:16, "John answered, saying to all, "I indeed 00:08:19.23\00:08:24.37 baptize you with water, but One mightier than I 00:08:24.40\00:08:27.14 is coming whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. 00:08:27.17\00:08:30.61 He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." 00:08:30.64\00:08:33.38 So John the Baptist used that word "fire" 00:08:33.41\00:08:36.28 to talk about the Holy Spirit. 00:08:36.31\00:08:37.85 Acts 1:8... Acts 1:8, "But you shall 00:08:37.88\00:08:43.32 receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, 00:08:43.39\00:08:47.06 and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, 00:08:47.09\00:08:49.72 and in all Judea, and Samaria and to the end of the earth." 00:08:49.76\00:08:54.56 So here we see that the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:08:54.56\00:08:59.47 when He comes upon them, that they, at Pentecost, 00:08:59.50\00:09:03.44 the promise was fulfilled. 00:09:03.67\00:09:06.37 Jesus said, "Go, wait in Jerusalem until the promise 00:09:06.41\00:09:10.78 of the Father is poured out," and the baptism of the Spirit 00:09:10.81\00:09:15.12 at Pentecost... once again, we just want to say this, 00:09:15.15\00:09:20.09 this is a unique event that was associated with the resurrection 00:09:20.12\00:09:28.20 of Jesus Christ at His ascension into Heaven; 00:09:28.23\00:09:31.57 His victory on the cross and His exaltation in heaven. 00:09:31.60\00:09:37.11 So even though that is a unique event, we don't see the 00:09:37.14\00:09:41.58 Holy Spirit again being poured out with tongues of 00:09:41.61\00:09:44.61 fire and the mighty rushing wind, 00:09:44.65\00:09:47.55 as a believer, being filled with the Holy Spirit is 00:09:47.62\00:09:53.56 something that is continuous 00:09:53.59\00:09:56.56 in the believer's lives. 00:09:56.59\00:09:58.06 And I want to read to you, Acts 4:29-31, 00:09:58.09\00:10:03.26 The disciples have come together and they have been 00:10:03.33\00:10:10.91 threatened not to speak, with arrests going on, 00:10:10.94\00:10:14.64 and in verse 29 it says, they're praying... 00:10:14.68\00:10:18.88 "Now Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your 00:10:18.91\00:10:24.05 servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 00:10:24.09\00:10:29.32 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs 00:10:29.36\00:10:33.46 and wonders may be done through the name 00:10:33.50\00:10:36.63 of Your Holy Servant Jesus. 00:10:36.70\00:10:39.87 And when they had prayed, and this is the same group 00:10:39.90\00:10:43.10 of people who, in the upper room, when they had prayed, 00:10:43.14\00:10:48.31 the place where they were assembled together was shaken 00:10:48.34\00:10:52.71 and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit." 00:10:52.75\00:10:58.25 Now, this isn't a repetition of Pentecost, 00:10:58.29\00:11:01.39 but it is the continuation of receiving power from on High. 00:11:01.42\00:11:07.86 So he says, "They were all filled with the Holy Spirit 00:11:07.93\00:11:11.70 and they spoke the word of God with boldness." 00:11:11.73\00:11:17.37 So they received a fresh filling. 00:11:17.41\00:11:21.54 You know, when Jesus said to us in Luke 11:9-13, 00:11:21.58\00:11:24.11 He said, "To ask, to seek, to knock... 00:11:24.15\00:11:30.35 These are linear verbs and it was a continual progression; 00:11:30.39\00:11:35.39 we need to keep on asking, keep on seeking, 00:11:35.42\00:11:38.06 keep on knocking and He said, "How much more will 00:11:38.09\00:11:41.80 your Father give the Holy Spirit to those who 00:11:41.83\00:11:44.80 keep on asking, keep on seeking and keep on knocking." 00:11:44.83\00:11:48.00 And Ephesians 5:18, I want to read that to you from the 00:11:48.04\00:11:51.94 Amplified... Paul writes, "Do not get drunk with wine 00:11:51.97\00:11:57.31 for that is debauchery, but ever be filled 00:11:57.38\00:12:02.15 and stimulated with the Holy Spirit." 00:12:02.18\00:12:05.02 This is a continuous action. 00:12:05.05\00:12:07.96 So, how do you know when the Holy Spirit 00:12:07.99\00:12:11.56 is working in your life? 00:12:11.59\00:12:13.09 What evidence do you have? 00:12:13.13\00:12:14.93 I want to give you what I believe is the #1 thing... 00:12:14.96\00:12:19.60 In Romans 5:5, Paul writes that God pours His 00:12:19.63\00:12:27.48 love, the very essence of His being, this divine 00:12:27.54\00:12:31.65 self-sacrificing love, into our hearts 00:12:31.68\00:12:34.82 by the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:34.85\00:12:36.95 In 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13, one of my favorite 00:12:36.99\00:12:41.49 Scriptures in the Bible shows us that as we grow in the 00:12:41.52\00:12:45.69 love of God by the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:12:45.73\00:12:48.26 we grow in holiness, we grow to be more like God. 00:12:48.30\00:12:51.97 It says this: "May the Lord make you increase and abound 00:12:52.00\00:12:55.50 in love to one another and to all... who's doing the action 00:12:55.54\00:12:59.47 here?... the Lord, just as we do to you, 00:12:59.51\00:13:03.14 so that, for the purpose of, He may establish your hearts 00:13:03.18\00:13:07.85 blameless in holiness before our God and Father 00:13:07.88\00:13:12.49 at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all of His saints." 00:13:12.52\00:13:16.49 So I believe that when someone is filled with the Holy Spirit 00:13:16.52\00:13:21.80 it is you're being filled with the essence of God, 00:13:21.83\00:13:25.67 this self-sacrificing love and you'll see two things 00:13:25.70\00:13:30.37 that will result from that... 00:13:30.41\00:13:31.74 #1... When God's love is operating in your heart, 00:13:31.77\00:13:35.28 there is no selfishness in your life - that is the way 00:13:35.31\00:13:40.58 to overcome selfishness, is to let God pour His 00:13:40.62\00:13:44.65 love into you so that you can love Him with all of your 00:13:44.69\00:13:47.72 heart, soul, mind and strength and love others as yourself. 00:13:47.76\00:13:52.06 But the other thing is... Why did Jesus say He was giving 00:13:52.09\00:13:56.33 us the Holy Spirit? To give us power to witness. 00:13:56.36\00:13:59.77 And I believe when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, 00:13:59.80\00:14:03.07 you will speak boldly, you'll share your testimony 00:14:03.10\00:14:07.28 with others about how Jesus is working in your life... 00:14:07.31\00:14:12.81 You will be a witness for Him. 00:14:12.85\00:14:15.72 Amen. Well done and well said! 00:14:15.75\00:14:18.22 And I want to pick up something that you touched on 00:14:18.25\00:14:21.76 the idea that the Spirit is given for a purpose. Yes 00:14:21.79\00:14:25.06 It's mission-driven. 00:14:25.09\00:14:26.63 On Monday, we talked about the gift of tongues, 00:14:26.70\00:14:30.53 and I want to read a little something from the lesson, 00:14:30.57\00:14:34.00 and then use that as a launching pad for 00:14:34.04\00:14:36.81 one or two additional statements. 00:14:36.87\00:14:39.34 The lesson says, "The gift of tongues at Pentecost 00:14:39.37\00:14:42.48 did not occur because it is the typical or even the most 00:14:42.51\00:14:47.18 important evidence of endowment of the Spirit." 00:14:47.22\00:14:50.19 We'll get back to that... it was manifested in order 00:14:50.25\00:14:53.52 to launch the church's world mission. 00:14:53.56\00:14:56.52 That is, the calling given in Acts 1:8 required 00:14:56.56\00:15:01.33 the gift of tongues. 00:15:01.36\00:15:03.40 "If the apostles were to cross cultural barriers 00:15:03.47\00:15:06.60 and reach the ends of the earth with the gospel, 00:15:06.63\00:15:09.77 they would need to be able to speak in languages 00:15:09.80\00:15:14.18 of those who needed to hear what they had to say." 00:15:14.21\00:15:18.78 So the gift of tongues was a manifestation of the presence 00:15:18.81\00:15:25.19 of the Holy Spirit on that occasion. 00:15:25.22\00:15:27.66 This "inauguration," if I can use that term, 00:15:27.69\00:15:31.83 of the Christian era, is a one-of-a-kind 00:15:31.86\00:15:35.93 as you so well said, event, and so those things that 00:15:35.96\00:15:40.50 happened at Pentecost should not be taken as necessary 00:15:40.54\00:15:45.01 every time the church meets. Absolutely! 00:15:45.04\00:15:46.98 Because this is a special thing. 00:15:47.04\00:15:50.01 The Holy Spirit is mission-driven. 00:15:50.05\00:15:53.72 Christ said in John 16:13, It's not going to speak 00:15:53.78\00:15:56.89 on its own, He's not going to speak on His own. 00:15:56.95\00:15:58.69 He's going to speak about Me. 00:15:58.72\00:16:00.42 That was His mission. Christ said, "If I don't 00:16:00.49\00:16:02.66 go, it's not going to come, and when He comes, 00:16:02.69\00:16:04.63 He's not going to flag Himself, He's going to talk about Me. 00:16:04.66\00:16:09.36 So there has been a parsing... you notice sometimes we get 00:16:09.40\00:16:15.14 off on things - was the miracle speaking in tongues 00:16:15.17\00:16:19.01 or hearing the tongues, and I've heard that 00:16:19.04\00:16:21.08 discussion over and over again. 00:16:21.11\00:16:22.44 Where was the miracle? 00:16:22.48\00:16:23.88 I think it is best always to stay with the word of God 00:16:23.95\00:16:28.08 and take it as it is presented before you. 00:16:28.12\00:16:31.05 In Acts 2:4, the Bible says this: "And they were all 00:16:31.09\00:16:36.83 filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak 00:16:36.86\00:16:41.03 in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." 00:16:41.06\00:16:45.50 So I'm coming down on the side that the miracle 00:16:45.53\00:16:48.34 was they spoke in other tongues. 00:16:48.37\00:16:51.77 For what purpose? 00:16:51.81\00:16:53.21 The purpose was so that the gospel could be promulgated. Yes 00:16:53.24\00:16:57.51 That's the purpose of the Spirit, not to say, 00:16:57.55\00:17:00.45 "Well, I got the Spirit" or you know, that kind of thing. 00:17:00.48\00:17:03.32 The Spirit had a mission. 00:17:03.35\00:17:05.15 The mission was to get the word out about Jesus. 00:17:05.19\00:17:08.79 Further evidence is the fact that there were those who 00:17:08.82\00:17:13.73 understood that the people who were speaking 00:17:13.76\00:17:17.57 were Galileans. 00:17:17.60\00:17:18.93 Now evidently, there was something about the Galilean 00:17:18.97\00:17:23.61 speech pattern because when Peter was speaking in the 00:17:23.64\00:17:30.95 courtyard of the high priest, the maiden said, "Your speech 00:17:30.98\00:17:35.95 betrays you." There's something about 00:17:35.98\00:17:37.99 your speech pattern... Now Galilee was up north 00:17:38.02\00:17:40.26 and Jerusalem down south. 00:17:40.29\00:17:41.62 I remember the first time we met 00:17:41.66\00:17:43.16 Mollie Steenson, you may not remember. 00:17:43.19\00:17:44.59 You came to New York to talk to all the pastors, 00:17:44.63\00:17:48.03 and when you opened your mouth, about two words in, 00:17:48.10\00:17:51.53 we said, "Oh, she's not from here." Laughter... 00:17:51.57\00:17:54.24 Now I wonder why? Laughter... 00:17:54.27\00:17:56.24 Now having gone to school in Alabama, 00:17:56.27\00:17:58.31 I recognized that it was an Alabama accent, 00:17:58.34\00:18:01.98 but we had French pastors, and Spanish pastors who were 00:18:02.01\00:18:05.11 kind of struggling because they weren't really used to 00:18:05.15\00:18:07.48 the New York accent, let alone the Alabama accent. 00:18:07.55\00:18:11.02 But there was something about the speech... so there were 00:18:11.05\00:18:13.52 those who understood that these speakers were 00:18:13.59\00:18:16.89 Galilean and yet we hear in our own language 00:18:16.96\00:18:21.33 the wonderful words of God. 00:18:21.36\00:18:23.10 Now there are some themes that I want to go through 00:18:23.13\00:18:25.10 very quickly - that I think should not be missed. 00:18:25.13\00:18:28.30 #1.. This Book of Acts is Luke talking about 00:18:30.31\00:18:37.15 the Acts of the New Testament. 00:18:40.32\00:18:42.08 Later on, Paul discusses the theology when he goes to 00:18:42.12\00:18:46.45 Corinth and we get a better breakdown of what he's 00:18:46.49\00:18:49.59 doing and what he's saying here, but there are some 00:18:49.62\00:18:51.83 things that I should not be missed... 00:18:51.86\00:18:54.00 #1... The gift of tongues was for the purpose of the 00:18:54.00\00:18:58.57 promulgation of the gospel, and when we think about 00:18:58.60\00:19:01.47 about the gift of tongues and how tongues is used, 00:19:01.50\00:19:04.04 it must be understood that the Holy Spirit 00:19:04.07\00:19:07.31 didn't come just to la, la, la, la, la, la. 00:19:07.34\00:19:11.18 The Holy Spirit has a mindset and it's 00:19:11.21\00:19:15.68 being used to lift up Christ. 00:19:15.72\00:19:17.62 And at this point, what they were trying to do 00:19:17.65\00:19:20.19 is to move that audience from their Jewish thinking 00:19:20.22\00:19:24.89 to a Christ-centered thinking and the purpose of the Spirit 00:19:24.93\00:19:29.26 on that occasion was to lift up and magnify Jesus. 00:19:29.30\00:19:33.00 #2... There is no evidence in this narrative that would make 00:19:33.03\00:19:37.44 this a test of presence of the power of the gospel 00:19:37.51\00:19:41.21 So what I'm saying here is that the Bible is not saying 00:19:41.24\00:19:45.01 that unless you speak in tongues at any given occasion 00:19:45.05\00:19:48.88 you are devoid of the Holy Spirit - you can't get that 00:19:48.92\00:19:52.62 from this text; nor can you get that from Paul's 00:19:52.65\00:19:56.52 message to the Corinthians. 00:19:56.56\00:19:59.06 So it's not a test - this is as you well said, Shelley, 00:19:59.09\00:20:02.40 the inauguration of a brand new event - God is doing 00:20:02.43\00:20:05.90 something special because of this inauguration. 00:20:05.93\00:20:08.64 #3... Tongues were known languages - how do we know? 00:20:08.67\00:20:12.97 We go back to Acts 2. 00:20:13.01\00:20:14.88 Go into Acts 2, I want to start at verse 6, 00:20:17.75\00:20:22.65 and then we can move on. 00:20:22.68\00:20:24.15 "And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together 00:20:24.19\00:20:27.52 and were confused because everyone heard them speak 00:20:27.56\00:20:30.63 in his own language." 00:20:30.69\00:20:33.36 So we're talking about intelligible languages. 00:20:33.40\00:20:36.73 And, of course, there were Jews that were part of the diaspora 00:20:36.80\00:20:39.63 who had come together for this particular time. 00:20:39.67\00:20:42.50 I should have read verse 5 with that because it says, 00:20:42.54\00:20:44.74 "Devout men from every nation." Yes, from every nation 00:20:44.77\00:20:47.71 under heaven." 00:20:47.74\00:20:50.11 So we know that people are coming together, 00:20:50.18\00:20:53.25 and it's shown a little bit later. 00:20:53.28\00:20:57.15 "And how is it that we hear each of our own language 00:20:57.22\00:21:00.79 in which we were born? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, 00:21:00.86\00:21:04.33 those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 00:21:04.36\00:21:07.86 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene." 00:21:07.93\00:21:12.37 So this is a wide dispersion, visitors from Rome, 00:21:12.40\00:21:16.57 both Jews and proselytes, those who had joined themselves, 00:21:16.60\00:21:20.34 Cretans, Arabs - we hear them speaking in our own tongues 00:21:20.38\00:21:24.35 the wonderful works of God. 00:21:24.38\00:21:26.05 So again, the reason that this is happening is so that 00:21:26.08\00:21:29.82 they can understand and hear of the wonderful works of God. 00:21:29.85\00:21:34.29 So, there are Jews living outside of Palestine, 00:21:34.32\00:21:37.83 and the focus was the wonderful works of God. 00:21:37.86\00:21:41.20 And really, whenever we come together, 00:21:41.23\00:21:43.40 the focus is the wonderful works of God. Amen! 00:21:43.43\00:21:46.40 And what the Holy Spirit is impressing upon us 00:21:46.43\00:21:48.20 IS how wonderful God is to us, His children. 00:21:48.24\00:21:52.41 The notion of an unknown tongue or an unintelligible 00:21:52.44\00:21:56.98 heavenly tongue cannot be sustained 00:21:57.01\00:22:00.25 from this particular passage. 00:22:00.32\00:22:01.72 You can't use this passage to prove that or even to 00:22:01.75\00:22:05.42 assert that because it simply is not there. 00:22:05.45\00:22:07.76 And #6... What happens at the inauguration 00:22:07.79\00:22:10.53 of an event is not usually normative for its operation. 00:22:10.56\00:22:15.70 When the president is elected, there is an inauguration... 00:22:15.73\00:22:19.47 That's a one-time thing, it doesn't happen every day, 00:22:19.50\00:22:22.34 it's just to kickoff the presidency, 00:22:22.37\00:22:24.44 so a year later, you don't re-inaugurate, 00:22:24.47\00:22:26.94 that's a one-time thing. 00:22:26.98\00:22:28.74 As such, the events of Acts 2, the Pentecost experience 00:22:28.78\00:22:33.01 were a singular one of a kind event. 00:22:33.05\00:22:37.15 It was a singular experience. 00:22:37.19\00:22:39.39 So to come to church and routinely expect 00:22:39.42\00:22:44.19 everyone to have this experience to manufacture 00:22:44.23\00:22:48.73 this experience, is not biblical. 00:22:48.76\00:22:51.30 It is not something that is supported by 00:22:51.33\00:22:54.07 this particular text. 00:22:54.10\00:22:56.97 And so that's the experience here... again, Paul 00:22:58.94\00:23:02.18 spends a lot more time walking us through this 00:23:02.21\00:23:05.91 later on in Corinthians, but in Luke 00:23:05.95\00:23:07.95 in looking at this day and trying to diagnose 00:23:07.98\00:23:11.29 what he saw and what was going on, realized 00:23:11.32\00:23:14.49 that this was a powerful, powerful, powerful experience 00:23:14.52\00:23:19.79 preparatory to Peter's great sermon which I know 00:23:19.83\00:23:23.23 is coming up and we can move to that now. 00:23:23.26\00:23:26.80 Well and the response to these different tongues... 00:23:26.84\00:23:30.07 some people, it says in verse 12 "and they were amazed," 00:23:30.11\00:23:33.48 but what did it say in verse 13? 00:23:33.54\00:23:35.38 Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine." 00:23:35.41\00:23:39.61 Now that's the King James version. 00:23:39.65\00:23:41.68 What were they saying, Jill, about what was the 00:23:41.72\00:23:45.09 indication of that? 00:23:45.12\00:23:46.45 They were drunk, they were drunk! 00:23:46.49\00:23:48.29 Okay, now Peter is not gonna just to set on that. 00:23:48.32\00:23:51.26 Look at verse 14... "But Peter standing up 00:23:51.29\00:23:54.83 with the eleven lifted up his voice," and this is what I 00:23:54.83\00:23:57.40 get to talk to you about, Peter's sermon. 00:23:57.43\00:23:59.50 You know this is Peter's first evangelistic crusade... 00:23:59.53\00:24:03.81 right here in the Book of Acts and he has just come down 00:24:03.84\00:24:07.48 from the upper room and he is full of what? 00:24:07.51\00:24:10.18 Filled with the Holy Spirit and power. 00:24:10.25\00:24:12.85 Now can you imagine, before Peter went up into 00:24:12.88\00:24:15.95 the upper room saying, "Hey Pete, what are you all 00:24:15.98\00:24:17.95 gonna do up there? He didn't have a clue. 00:24:17.99\00:24:20.29 And he sure didn't know what was going to happen 00:24:20.36\00:24:22.92 when he came down... he was just submitted 00:24:22.96\00:24:25.73 and committed to God and ready 00:24:25.76\00:24:27.96 to do whatever the Lord would show him. 00:24:27.96\00:24:29.83 So, the first thing Peter does when he raised up his voice 00:24:29.86\00:24:37.77 when he was countering this that they were drunk... 00:24:37.81\00:24:41.01 He laid a scriptural foundation from the old testament. 00:24:41.04\00:24:44.95 Actually, it was from - I think it's the Book of Joel. 00:24:44.98\00:24:49.55 Joel's prophecy, but now remember the people 00:24:49.58\00:24:54.02 that are there, what was the population of Jerusalem? 00:24:54.06\00:24:57.73 I think it was between like 30 and 40,000. Um hm 00:24:57.76\00:25:00.86 It is estimated the number of people that is here in Jerusalem 00:25:00.93\00:25:04.83 at this time... see they are there for 00:25:04.87\00:25:06.40 the Feast of Pentecost and there could be over 00:25:06.43\00:25:09.77 80,000 people there and they're coming to celebrate 00:25:09.80\00:25:15.11 the Feast of Pentecost, so what would that tell you 00:25:15.14\00:25:17.68 about them? They're Jews! 00:25:17.71\00:25:20.22 They are Jewish believers, but they weren't all 00:25:20.25\00:25:23.15 from this area... we've already seen in the 00:25:23.18\00:25:24.95 Scriptures where they were from all over the world. 00:25:24.99\00:25:28.19 And they didn't all understand Arabic which is 00:25:30.63\00:25:34.93 probably what they, you know, were speaking was Arabic. 00:25:34.96\00:25:38.93 "Therefore, the need for the gift of tongues." 00:25:38.97\00:25:42.04 So when Peter quoted from the Old Testament Book of Joel, 00:25:42.07\00:25:47.54 these people that were there as celebrating 00:25:47.58\00:25:51.85 the Feast of Pentecost, they were very familiar 00:25:51.88\00:25:55.05 with the Book of Joel. 00:25:55.08\00:25:56.42 So they were familiar with the Scriptures. 00:25:56.45\00:25:59.12 So now, I have this opportunity and I just thought of 00:25:59.15\00:26:02.52 what is the best way to present this and I decided 00:26:02.56\00:26:05.73 just "let me read this to you." 00:26:05.76\00:26:08.53 This is the sermon and we're gonna see at the end, 00:26:08.56\00:26:11.43 it was a mighty powerful sermon. 00:26:11.47\00:26:13.34 Okay, Acts 2, I'm going to start with verse 16-21. 00:26:13.37\00:26:17.11 "But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 00:26:17.14\00:26:20.38 "And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, 00:26:20.41\00:26:23.68 that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; 00:26:23.75\00:26:27.02 Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, 00:26:27.05\00:26:29.42 Your young men shall see visions, 00:26:29.45\00:26:31.52 Your old men shall dream dreams... 00:26:31.55\00:26:33.69 CA, I know you're dreaming dreams. 00:26:33.76\00:26:35.49 And on My menservants and on My maidservants 00:26:35.52\00:26:38.89 I will pour out My Spirit in those days; 00:26:38.93\00:26:41.50 And they shall prophesy. 00:26:41.53\00:26:43.57 I will show wonders in heaven above 00:26:43.63\00:26:46.94 And signs in the earth beneath; 00:26:47.00\00:26:49.10 Blood and fire and vapor of smoke... again there's 00:26:49.14\00:26:53.07 those things that are indicative of the Spirit of God 00:26:53.11\00:26:56.44 of God moving powerfully. 00:26:56.48\00:26:58.08 Verse 20: The sun shall be be turned into darkness. 00:26:58.11\00:27:01.05 And the moon into blood, 00:27:01.08\00:27:02.42 Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. 00:27:02.45\00:27:06.25 And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on 00:27:06.29\00:27:09.72 the name of the Lord Shall be saved." Amen! 00:27:09.76\00:27:12.36 So first Peter lays the Scriptural foundation, 00:27:12.39\00:27:16.60 but now this is his first evangelistic crusade; 00:27:16.67\00:27:19.67 he's just explaining to them this is what's going on. 00:27:19.70\00:27:23.00 You know he's going to have to bring in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:27:23.04\00:27:26.47 Okay, Joel's prophecy was about the future age of salvation 00:27:26.51\00:27:31.98 which was characterized by several signs as a result of the 00:27:32.01\00:27:35.95 outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:27:35.98\00:27:38.02 Peter stresses the historical relevance of what they were 00:27:38.05\00:27:43.09 witnessing firsthand. 00:27:43.12\00:27:45.06 Verse 17 is a quote from Joel 2:28, 00:27:45.09\00:27:48.86 but there is one difference and I think this is worth 00:27:48.90\00:27:52.40 noting... instead of Joel's introductory afterwards 00:27:52.43\00:27:56.34 "And it shall come to pass afterward, Peter said, 00:27:56.37\00:28:00.61 "And it shall come to pass in the last days." 00:28:00.64\00:28:03.91 And what he is doing is making the point that the final 00:28:03.98\00:28:08.42 act of this great drama of salvation has just begun. 00:28:08.45\00:28:14.09 And they didn't know when the end would come, 00:28:14.12\00:28:16.42 but were convinced it wouldn't be... and aren't we convinced 00:28:16.46\00:28:19.36 of that... it's not gonna be long - the Lord is returning 00:28:19.39\00:28:22.83 He's returning for everyone who is committed 00:28:22.86\00:28:26.10 and submitted their life to Him. 00:28:26.13\00:28:27.74 So that was Peter's plea. 00:28:27.77\00:28:32.27 After highlighting the prophetic significance of Pentecost, 00:28:32.31\00:28:36.61 Peter turned to the recent events of Jesus' life, 00:28:36.64\00:28:40.25 death and resurrection. 00:28:40.32\00:28:42.52 This is the crux - it is the resurrection; however, 00:28:42.55\00:28:47.26 that received the greatest emphasis - what would that be? 00:28:47.29\00:28:50.83 Without the resurrection, there is no gospel message. 00:28:50.86\00:28:53.80 For Peter, the resurrection was the ultimate vindication 00:28:56.26\00:29:00.27 of Jesus because Jesus was the Messiah; 00:29:00.30\00:29:03.67 He could not be detained by death. 00:29:03.74\00:29:06.61 So for Peter and for all the writers of the New Testament, 00:29:06.64\00:29:10.68 the resurrection of Jesus had become the most powerful 00:29:10.71\00:29:15.25 evidence, not only of Jesus as the Messiah, 00:29:15.28\00:29:19.32 but for the whole Christian message of salvation. 00:29:19.35\00:29:22.59 Now, let's pick up again on this wonderful powerful 00:29:22.62\00:29:26.09 message of Peter - we will look in 00:29:26.13\00:29:28.00 Acts 2- again we're going to start with 00:29:28.03\00:29:31.20 verse 22 and go through verse 33... 00:29:31.23\00:29:34.07 "Men of Israel, hear these words, Jesus of Nazareth, 00:29:34.14\00:29:38.47 a Man attested by God to you by miracles... 00:29:38.51\00:29:41.98 Now who is he talking to? Men of Israel! 00:29:42.01\00:29:45.21 Attested by God to you by miracles, by wonders 00:29:45.25\00:29:50.02 and signs which God did through Him in your midst, 00:29:50.09\00:29:53.56 as you yourselves already know... 00:29:53.59\00:29:56.52 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and 00:29:56.56\00:30:00.40 foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, 00:30:00.43\00:30:04.87 have crucified and put to death... see Peter didn't 00:30:04.90\00:30:07.70 mince words, did he? He just spoke it like it was. 00:30:07.74\00:30:11.07 ... whom God raised up... and God did what? 00:30:11.11\00:30:13.68 Praise God! Raised up. 00:30:13.74\00:30:15.21 Having loosed the pangs of death because it was 00:30:15.24\00:30:19.21 not possible that He should be helped by it." 00:30:19.25\00:30:22.02 "For David says concerning Him... 00:30:22.05\00:30:24.15 ... Now we're going back to Psalms quoting from the 00:30:24.19\00:30:26.65 Old Testament, Psalm 16:8. 00:30:26.72\00:30:29.56 David said, "I foresaw the Lord always before my 00:30:29.59\00:30:34.03 face for He is at my right hand that I may not be shaken. 00:30:34.10\00:30:38.37 Therefore my heart rejoiced and my tongue was glad; 00:30:38.40\00:30:42.07 moreover, my flesh also will rest in hope. 00:30:42.10\00:30:45.37 For You will not leave my soul in Hades. 00:30:45.41\00:30:48.44 Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 00:30:48.48\00:30:52.48 You have made known to me the ways of life. 00:30:52.51\00:30:55.35 You will make me full of joy in Your presence." 00:30:55.38\00:31:00.26 Then Peter goes on and says, "Men and brethren, 00:31:00.29\00:31:02.82 let me speak freely... which he is doing... 00:31:02.86\00:31:05.83 to you of the patriarch David that he is both dead and 00:31:05.86\00:31:09.96 buried and his tomb is with us to this day. 00:31:10.03\00:31:13.80 Therefore, being a prophet and knowing that God had sworn 00:31:13.84\00:31:17.57 with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, 00:31:17.61\00:31:20.64 according to the flesh, he would raise up the Christ 00:31:20.68\00:31:24.15 to sit on his throne. 00:31:24.21\00:31:26.05 He, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection 00:31:26.08\00:31:29.88 of Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, 00:31:29.92\00:31:34.06 nor did His flesh see corruption. 00:31:34.12\00:31:36.46 This Jesus God has raised up of which we are all witnesses." 00:31:36.49\00:31:42.76 There's that word again, "witnesses." 00:31:42.80\00:31:45.63 You can argue with anything, anybody's doctrine - something 00:31:45.67\00:31:49.77 they say, "Oh I've taught" or something you get secondhand, 00:31:49.80\00:31:52.61 but these had seen and they had heard with their own 00:31:52.64\00:31:56.71 eyes and their own ears. 00:31:56.78\00:31:58.85 It's so vitally important that we have a personal 00:31:58.88\00:32:02.88 relationship, a personal experience with the 00:32:02.92\00:32:06.42 Lord Jesus Christ. 00:32:06.45\00:32:07.79 Let's finish this up with verse 33. 00:32:07.82\00:32:10.53 "Therefore, being by the right hand of God, 00:32:10.56\00:32:14.30 ... talking of Jesus... exalted and having received 00:32:14.30\00:32:17.97 of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, 00:32:18.00\00:32:20.14 He has shed forth this... He has shed forth this, 00:32:20.20\00:32:24.91 which you now see and hear." 00:32:24.94\00:32:28.34 Now, we know that Peter... again this is his first sermon 00:32:28.38\00:32:34.28 after he comes out of the upper room FULL of the 00:32:34.32\00:32:38.25 Holy Spirit, full of boldness and we know that this 00:32:38.29\00:32:41.96 was a powerfully impacting and successful evangelistic crusade 00:32:41.99\00:32:47.86 because the Scripture goes on to say that over 00:32:47.86\00:32:50.93 3,000 were added to the church that day. 00:32:50.97\00:32:54.34 So Peter's sermon, powerful, full of God's word, 00:32:54.37\00:32:59.17 and anointed of the Holy Spirit and that same 00:32:59.21\00:33:03.45 anointing will rest on every one of us as we 00:33:03.48\00:33:07.22 ... just ask God, "Oh Father, fill us with 00:33:07.25\00:33:10.19 Your Holy Spirit, Father we want this power 00:33:10.22\00:33:14.09 to be witnesses to the whole world." 00:33:14.16\00:33:18.23 AMEN, thank you so much Mollie! 00:33:18.26\00:33:20.70 Wouldn't you have loved to be there? Yes! 00:33:20.73\00:33:22.60 Being there in Jerusalem and to sit under Peter 00:33:22.63\00:33:25.80 and just to hear the anointing of the Holy Spirit 00:33:25.83\00:33:28.60 and want what he had to share. 00:33:28.64\00:33:30.47 I mean, we can read that and you did a wonderful job of 00:33:30.51\00:33:33.44 portraying some of that power and energy that was 00:33:33.48\00:33:35.98 in the text, but just to sit there and to hear that 00:33:36.01\00:33:38.98 it's amazing, but the beautiful thing to me is that 00:33:39.01\00:33:42.05 here at the end of time, the Holy Spirit I believe will 00:33:42.08\00:33:45.19 be poured out in great measure again. Amen! 00:33:45.22\00:33:48.56 We have seen the Holy Spirit at work in the church 00:33:48.59\00:33:51.23 all the way through the ages since that time, 00:33:51.26\00:33:53.26 but I think in the great measure we're going to see 00:33:53.29\00:33:56.00 the latter rain fall again and I'm just excited... 00:33:56.03\00:33:58.43 Lord Jesus, I want to be part of that. 00:33:58.47\00:34:01.74 I want to experience that and to see that and know that. 00:34:01.77\00:34:05.34 Well I have Wednesday... you just got me all excited Mollie. 00:34:05.37\00:34:08.48 Alright! I have Wednesday which is on 00:34:08.51\00:34:10.85 "The Exaltation of Jesus." 00:34:10.88\00:34:15.02 What was the condition for the coming of the Spirit? 00:34:15.05\00:34:18.22 Shelley talked about that... being in one accord, 00:34:18.25\00:34:20.89 in one place - that prayer, that upper room 00:34:20.96\00:34:24.33 experience, that unity. 00:34:24.36\00:34:26.03 In addition, there's another condition for receiving, 00:34:26.06\00:34:29.63 the coming of the Holy Spirit and that is the 00:34:29.66\00:34:31.40 exaltation of Jesus. 00:34:31.43\00:34:33.40 My portion of Scripture here is Acts 2:33-36, 00:34:33.44\00:34:38.61 but before we go there, I want to take a step back... 00:34:38.64\00:34:41.04 When we talk about the exaltation of Jesus... 00:34:41.08\00:34:43.91 you might be saying - I have no idea what that means, 00:34:43.95\00:34:46.25 and after Jesus was crucified, He rested in the tomb 00:34:46.28\00:34:49.82 over Sabbath, he was resurrected on Sunday, 00:34:49.85\00:34:53.32 and we know that He spent the 40 days with the disciples, 00:34:53.36\00:34:59.39 not every day all day, but He was seen of them 00:34:59.43\00:35:02.43 several times during that time. 00:35:02.46\00:35:04.77 But the exaltation of Jesus refers to when He ascended up. 00:35:04.80\00:35:08.64 Acts 1:9-11 talks about the clouds receiving Him 00:35:08.67\00:35:11.84 from the disciples' sight. 00:35:11.87\00:35:13.88 "And when He went up, Him being, as it were, 00:35:13.91\00:35:17.28 reinstated at the right hand of the Father 00:35:17.35\00:35:20.32 that hand of power signifying God's approval 00:35:20.35\00:35:24.59 of what had taken place... 00:35:24.62\00:35:26.25 Jesus' accomplishment, you can say, His death on the cross, 00:35:26.29\00:35:30.63 and the vindication of the character of God. 00:35:30.66\00:35:34.20 So I want to look, just a moment at the Great Controversy. 00:35:34.20\00:35:38.73 We see the Great Controversy began in heaven really. 00:35:38.77\00:35:42.74 Satan and how sin originated to me is just a mystery... 00:35:42.77\00:35:47.81 A perfect created being we know and in Ezekiel 28, 00:35:47.84\00:35:51.45 it talks about Lucifer being created, it talks about 00:35:51.48\00:35:54.98 him being the covering cherub and all of that, 00:35:55.02\00:35:58.09 and then it say that he was perfect in the day 00:35:58.12\00:36:01.92 that he was created and then Ezekiel 28:16 says that... 00:36:01.96\00:36:05.69 "By the abundance of your trading you became 00:36:05.73\00:36:09.16 filled with violence within." 00:36:09.20\00:36:11.13 The word for trading is "slander or literally 00:36:11.17\00:36:14.17 to go about from one to another trading either goods or words. 00:36:14.24\00:36:19.91 And so in the very beginning Satan began to cast doubt 00:36:19.94\00:36:23.58 as it were, Mollie, on the character of God, 00:36:23.65\00:36:26.28 on God's righteous law and began to cast that doubt. 00:36:26.31\00:36:30.52 ... God really isn't loving, God's law really isn't 00:36:30.59\00:36:34.06 such and such and he began to cast that doubt... 00:36:34.09\00:36:36.83 And that was spread to this earth and for 4,000 years 00:36:36.86\00:36:40.80 until the coming of Jesus, there was still some doubt 00:36:40.83\00:36:44.97 as to the character of God and so Jesus came... 00:36:45.00\00:36:48.44 When He came and lived a perfect life proved that the law 00:36:48.47\00:36:54.08 of God is holy, just and good and He died, 00:36:54.14\00:36:57.78 of course we know He died to redeem sinful humanity... 00:36:57.81\00:37:00.85 Romans 3:23: "All have sinned and fallen short 00:37:00.88\00:37:04.49 of the glory of God." 00:37:04.52\00:37:06.39 And we know that we're all under, as it were, 00:37:06.42\00:37:08.72 the curse of the law because we all have sinned. 00:37:08.76\00:37:11.46 And the wages of sin... if we're a sinner, 00:37:11.49\00:37:13.56 the wages of sin, Romans 6:23, is death. 00:37:13.63\00:37:17.90 1 Peter 1:18-19: One of my favorite Scriptures... 00:37:17.93\00:37:21.40 "Knowing that you are not redeemed with corruptible 00:37:21.44\00:37:24.71 things like silver or gold, but with the precious 00:37:24.74\00:37:28.48 blood of Christ, as of a lamb 00:37:28.51\00:37:31.45 without blemish and without spot." 00:37:31.48\00:37:32.95 So Jesus' death on the cross, it redeemed sinful humanity. 00:37:32.98\00:37:36.82 We were given the choice to accept the blood of Jesus. 00:37:36.89\00:37:40.66 Applied to, as it were, the door post and the lintel of our heart 00:37:40.69\00:37:44.86 to be cleansed and to have that hope of eternal life. 00:37:44.89\00:37:48.10 But not only that, at the cross, the character of God 00:37:48.13\00:37:53.30 in a special way was vindicated and Satan was exposed as a 00:37:53.34\00:37:56.77 fraud and was fully defeated. Praise God! 00:37:56.81\00:37:59.67 He was cast down! Praise the Lord! 00:37:59.71\00:38:01.51 Let's look at John 12 and then we'll get to 00:38:01.54\00:38:06.75 our passage in Acts - we are going there. 00:38:06.78\00:38:14.52 John 12:31-32: Jesus said, "Now this is the judgment 00:38:14.56\00:38:23.47 of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 00:38:23.50\00:38:28.74 He's referring to Satan and the judgment 00:38:28.77\00:38:31.14 that's going to take place upon Satan. 00:38:31.17\00:38:33.38 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw 00:38:33.41\00:38:36.44 all men, all people to Myself." 00:38:36.48\00:38:39.61 So at the cross, in a special way, the character of Satan 00:38:39.65\00:38:44.52 versus the character of God was clearly revealed 00:38:44.55\00:38:47.72 and shown and Satan was cast out. 00:38:47.76\00:38:51.06 Now we have Jesus' exaltation in heaven when He ascended... 00:38:51.09\00:38:55.50 We know that He had exalted status before 00:38:55.53\00:38:58.17 He came to this earth. 00:38:58.20\00:38:59.60 John 1:1- what does it say? "In the beginning was the word, 00:38:59.63\00:39:02.70 and the word was with God and the word was God. 00:39:02.74\00:39:06.81 And then John 1:14 says: "The word was 00:39:06.84\00:39:09.68 made flesh and dwelt among us." 00:39:09.71\00:39:11.15 We know that word is the Lord Jesus Christ, so in the 00:39:11.18\00:39:14.38 beginning He was with God and He was God. 00:39:14.42\00:39:18.02 So in the beginning, from all eternity, 00:39:18.05\00:39:20.69 Jesus had the same exalted position. 00:39:20.72\00:39:22.96 He IS God, He WAS God. 00:39:22.99\00:39:25.49 But then Philippians 2 talks about Him humbling 00:39:25.53\00:39:28.50 Himself as a man and to the death of the cross. 00:39:28.53\00:39:32.87 After the cross and after He brought back into 00:39:32.90\00:39:37.11 heaven, the Holy Spirit would not have been given if Jesus 00:39:37.14\00:39:42.34 was not exalted and Jesus would not have been 00:39:42.38\00:39:45.41 exalted if He had not triumphed on the cross. 00:39:45.45\00:39:50.59 John 17:4-5: "Jesus says, I have glorified You on the 00:39:50.62\00:39:54.46 earth. I have finished the work You have given Me to do. 00:39:54.49\00:39:57.53 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself 00:39:57.56\00:40:00.40 with the glory I had with You before the world was." 00:40:00.43\00:40:03.63 Now let's read our passage in Acts... 00:40:03.67\00:40:05.77 Acts 2, I'm going to pick up with a couple of the 00:40:05.80\00:40:08.47 verses Mollie finished with. 00:40:08.50\00:40:09.84 Acts 2:32: "This Jesus God has raised up of which 00:40:09.87\00:40:15.94 we are all witnesses... he is talking about the 00:40:15.98\00:40:17.68 resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ... 00:40:17.71\00:40:20.22 Then verse 33..."Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God 00:40:20.28\00:40:25.62 and having received from the Father the promise of the 00:40:25.65\00:40:29.12 Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now 00:40:29.16\00:40:32.26 see and hear." To pour out means to pour out, 00:40:32.29\00:40:35.03 to shed liberally... He poured out the gift 00:40:35.06\00:40:38.47 of the Holy Spirit. Then he goes on... 00:40:38.50\00:40:40.87 For David did not ascend into the heavens," but he says 00:40:40.90\00:40:44.81 and then Peter quotes from Psalm 110:1: "The Lord 00:40:44.84\00:40:49.81 meaning God the Father said to my Lord, David's writing 00:40:49.84\00:40:54.52 meaning "My Lord the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ," 00:40:54.55\00:40:58.02 Sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your footstool. 00:40:58.05\00:41:05.76 The right hand of the Father is that position of authority, 00:41:05.79\00:41:10.93 position of power. 00:41:10.97\00:41:13.17 The Holy Spirit could not fully come if Jesus were not 00:41:13.20\00:41:16.97 exalted... Remember, Jesus told His disciples, in John 7:39, 00:41:17.01\00:41:21.98 "But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, who knows 00:41:22.01\00:41:25.01 believing in Him would receive for the Holy Spirit 00:41:25.05\00:41:28.18 was not yet given." 00:41:28.22\00:41:29.55 Meaning in this great measure, as it was at the inauguration 00:41:29.58\00:41:32.69 of the church there at Pentecost because Jesus 00:41:32.72\00:41:35.76 was not yet glorified. 00:41:35.79\00:41:37.73 He was not yet ascended to His Father and reinstated 00:41:37.76\00:41:41.76 as it were, installed at the right hand of the Father. 00:41:41.80\00:41:47.07 I want to look at one more verse, jump over 2 chapters. 00:41:47.10\00:41:52.34 Acts 5:32-33, No, I'm sorry, 31 and 32... 00:41:52.37\00:41:59.11 "Him, God has exalted to His right hand - meaning Jesus 00:41:59.15\00:42:07.16 is exalted to the right hand of God the Father, 00:42:07.19\00:42:09.46 to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance 00:42:09.49\00:42:12.96 to Israel and forgiveness of sins and we are His 00:42:12.99\00:42:16.67 witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit 00:42:16.73\00:42:19.63 whom God has given to those who obey Him." 00:42:19.67\00:42:22.70 Talking the same thing... after the cross, 00:42:22.74\00:42:25.01 Jesus on the tree, resurrected and reinstated, exalted 00:42:25.04\00:42:30.15 to the position at the right hand of the Father 00:42:30.21\00:42:33.18 to give repentance to Israel, forgiveness of sins 00:42:33.21\00:42:35.55 and to give the church in power the Holy Spirit. 00:42:35.58\00:42:39.95 Amen! Amen! Well praise the Lord, 00:42:40.02\00:42:42.29 that just brings us to the last part of the lesson, 00:42:42.32\00:42:46.09 and you built a good foundation, praise the Lord. 00:42:46.13\00:42:50.80 This is a marvelous work that God does. 00:42:50.83\00:42:54.50 Now notice that the Scripture she read says that the fact 00:42:54.54\00:42:59.41 that Jesus Christ was exalted to be a Prince and a Savior 00:42:59.44\00:43:04.55 to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 00:43:04.58\00:43:09.25 So this is the basis and here is Peter preaching 00:43:09.28\00:43:12.65 about that very thing. 00:43:12.69\00:43:14.86 And so God is doing a work like that today, 00:43:14.89\00:43:20.30 and we're going to talk about that in a little while, 00:43:20.33\00:43:22.76 but let's go... again Peter is talking and I want to 00:43:22.80\00:43:26.43 highlight something that was going on because 00:43:26.47\00:43:29.70 before Peter started to preach, the other disciples, 00:43:29.74\00:43:35.28 the people that had received, the others that had received 00:43:35.31\00:43:37.68 the blessing of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, 00:43:37.71\00:43:40.38 they were speaking as it says in Acts 2:11... 00:43:40.42\00:43:46.39 We do hear them speak in our tongues 00:43:46.42\00:43:49.62 the wonderful works of God. 00:43:49.66\00:43:52.56 So their hearts were being prepared for what Peter 00:43:52.59\00:43:55.43 was about to do, but here comes the devil 00:43:55.46\00:43:57.63 trying to throw in one of those stones... 00:43:57.67\00:43:59.90 Oh these guys are just full of new wine... 00:44:00.04\00:44:02.20 In other words, "Don't listen to these people, 00:44:02.24\00:44:03.84 they are just babbling, but they had heard the 00:44:03.91\00:44:07.28 wonderful works of God and their attention was peaked. 00:44:07.31\00:44:10.85 And Peter starts to talk with the 00:44:10.88\00:44:13.72 inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that's 00:44:13.75\00:44:16.42 what we have to understand. 00:44:16.45\00:44:17.79 You know, anyone that gets up in front of people 00:44:17.82\00:44:20.56 to speak the word of God, needs to do what they did. 00:44:20.66\00:44:23.53 What did they do? They humbled themselves 00:44:23.56\00:44:25.73 before the Lord asking for the Lord to forgive them, 00:44:25.76\00:44:28.76 asking for the Holy Spirit to be poured out, 00:44:28.80\00:44:31.07 the promised blessing. 00:44:31.10\00:44:33.50 This is what we do here, we come to the Lord, 00:44:33.54\00:44:36.17 ask the Lord to bless us with the Holy Spirit that we may 00:44:36.20\00:44:38.77 speak the wonderful works of God. 00:44:38.81\00:44:41.74 So these people were hearing 00:44:41.84\00:44:43.41 the wonderful works of God and as they heard 00:44:43.45\00:44:46.88 oh, it's a marvelous Scripture - let's go there 00:44:46.92\00:44:49.52 to Acts 2 and you read already verse 36. 00:44:49.55\00:44:55.69 Let's read that verse 36 again. 00:44:55.72\00:44:57.63 Acts 2:36: And this is the Scripture... 00:44:57.66\00:45:02.10 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly 00:45:02.13\00:45:05.53 that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, 00:45:05.57\00:45:09.90 both Lord and Christ. Amen! 00:45:09.94\00:45:13.27 So now they are understanding you have crucified the Messiah! 00:45:13.31\00:45:18.85 And as they heard this... notice verse 37, 00:45:18.88\00:45:21.68 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart 00:45:21.72\00:45:25.29 and said to Peter and the rest of the people... 00:45:25.32\00:45:27.99 Men and brethren, what shall we do?" 00:45:28.02\00:45:32.66 So it's interesting that it says, "What shall we do?" 00:45:33.03\00:45:35.70 It wasn't just one individual, it was a lot of people, 00:45:35.73\00:45:39.33 and I imagine that some with just tears in their eyes, 00:45:39.37\00:45:42.44 they realized that they were guilty of killing the Messiah. 00:45:42.47\00:45:48.44 And when they were cut to the heart, they were asking 00:45:48.48\00:45:50.65 "Now what do we do?" 00:45:50.71\00:45:52.75 They had no idea what they had to do, so Peter answered... 00:45:52.78\00:45:56.75 Under the power of the Holy Spirit, he says: 00:45:56.79\00:46:01.32 Verse 38, "Then Peter said to them, "Repent and let 00:46:01.36\00:46:05.53 every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ 00:46:05.56\00:46:09.50 for the remission of sins and you shall receive 00:46:09.53\00:46:13.74 the gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:46:13.77\00:46:15.67 For the promise is to you and to your children, 00:46:15.70\00:46:19.31 and to all who are afar off and as many as the Lord 00:46:19.34\00:46:22.88 our God will call." 00:46:22.91\00:46:24.85 And so the lesson, as we look at the lesson, it brings us into 00:46:24.88\00:46:28.52 some questions about what is this... repentance. 00:46:28.55\00:46:32.05 He asked them to REPENT, they apparently understood 00:46:32.09\00:46:35.59 what the message was and only when you understand 00:46:35.62\00:46:39.06 a message, can you really repent? 00:46:39.09\00:46:40.90 Only when you understand that you have committed 00:46:40.93\00:46:42.93 some sin - can you really repent of the sin. 00:46:42.96\00:46:46.27 You know I'm saying this to you because 00:46:46.30\00:46:48.34 recently I received a little video... 00:46:48.37\00:46:51.11 I don't know how my name gets into some of these things. 00:46:51.14\00:46:54.04 I received a video and they are showing this person 00:46:54.08\00:46:57.88 that supposed to be some kind of priest baptizing 00:46:57.91\00:47:00.68 a baby and the little baby has no idea what's going on, 00:47:00.75\00:47:05.92 and he turned the baby upside-down, dunked his 00:47:05.95\00:47:09.22 head in the water and then dunked his feet in the water 00:47:09.26\00:47:12.36 and dunked his head in the water again 00:47:12.39\00:47:13.76 while he was saying some things, 00:47:13.83\00:47:15.80 but the baby could not repent because the baby had no 00:47:15.83\00:47:19.33 idea what sin is. 00:47:19.37\00:47:20.94 So what is repentance? 00:47:20.97\00:47:23.17 Repentance has already been mentioned by Sister Shelley, 00:47:23.20\00:47:25.84 it includes sorrow for sin, a desire for cleansing, 00:47:25.87\00:47:30.58 but you want to be cleansed and turn away from the evil 00:47:30.65\00:47:35.48 that brought you to that condition. 00:47:35.52\00:47:37.89 You don't want to be doing those things anymore. 00:47:37.92\00:47:39.72 You want the Lord to give you the power to be victorious. 00:47:39.75\00:47:45.23 You want to be renewed and David said, 00:47:45.26\00:47:48.90 "Take not Your Holy Spirit from me" in Psalm 51. 00:47:48.93\00:47:52.73 So repentance is not just sorrow for sin, 00:47:52.77\00:47:56.07 it's a desire to turn away, and I say this... 00:47:56.10\00:47:58.87 I better look at the time because I'm getting excited 00:47:58.91\00:48:01.01 forgetting about the time... 00:48:01.04\00:48:02.51 And Judas - you look at Judas and it seemed like he had 00:48:02.54\00:48:06.98 some kind of sorrow for sin. 00:48:07.05\00:48:10.25 You know, as we look at Judas, he didn't really expect 00:48:10.32\00:48:14.66 Jesus to allow Himself to be taken captive, 00:48:14.69\00:48:17.36 to allow Himself to be beaten... 00:48:17.39\00:48:18.99 He thought Jesus was going to escape. 00:48:19.03\00:48:21.63 He thought...I'm gonna make some money out of this 00:48:21.66\00:48:23.50 and go my way... 00:48:23.57\00:48:25.57 And I imagine that Judas was waiting for the moment, 00:48:25.60\00:48:28.24 kept following to see where are they taking Him? 00:48:28.27\00:48:30.44 When is He going to get away? 00:48:30.51\00:48:32.24 But Jesus would not, He stayed there, 00:48:32.27\00:48:36.14 He was suffering every insult; the spitting; 00:48:36.18\00:48:39.68 the slapping; and every insult. 00:48:39.71\00:48:43.25 And, of course, he comes... he says, "I have sinned 00:48:43.28\00:48:46.15 in that I have betrayed innocent blood." 00:48:46.19\00:48:49.29 So we see Judas coming to this condition, but he didn't go 00:48:49.32\00:48:56.20 all the way - he had sorrow for the results 00:48:56.23\00:48:59.73 of the sin, but not a desire to turn away from it... 00:48:59.77\00:49:04.44 And that's what makes the difference between these people 00:49:04.47\00:49:07.21 listening there because they're asking men and women, 00:49:07.24\00:49:09.84 "What shall we do?" Repent and Peter follows by 00:49:09.88\00:49:12.95 saying, "And be baptized every one of you 00:49:12.98\00:49:16.22 in the name of Jesus Christ." 00:49:16.25\00:49:17.62 So repentance and baptism come together, 00:49:17.65\00:49:21.16 and that's what the disciples were teaching - repentance 00:49:21.19\00:49:24.29 and baptism. 00:49:24.36\00:49:26.56 And baptism is, as we understand it, and illustrated in 00:49:26.59\00:49:32.87 Romans 6, is that you are fully submerged in water... 00:49:32.90\00:49:37.87 that's what the word "baptism" means, "baptiso" 00:49:37.91\00:49:40.98 submersed in water fully covered and then when 00:49:41.01\00:49:44.88 you're brought back up out of the water, 00:49:44.91\00:49:46.82 it symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 00:49:46.85\00:49:49.65 and you, when you're under the water, it's a death 00:49:49.68\00:49:52.62 to your old way of life. Amen! 00:49:52.65\00:49:54.46 And coming out of the water, it's a resurrection- born again. 00:49:54.49\00:49:59.26 Jesus said, "You must be born of water and the Spirit." 00:49:59.29\00:50:02.33 Now here it is connected to John 3- Jesus said, "You must 00:50:02.36\00:50:06.53 be born of water and the Spirit"... the Holy Spirit. 00:50:06.57\00:50:09.97 Now, the person understands and begins 00:50:10.01\00:50:13.38 a new walk with the Lord. 00:50:13.44\00:50:14.88 Now, as has been said, the Holy Spirit was always 00:50:14.91\00:50:17.88 working in the person's life, trying to lead them 00:50:17.91\00:50:20.22 close to the Lord, but when the person is baptized, 00:50:20.28\00:50:24.95 just as we saw when Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit 00:50:24.99\00:50:28.29 comes upon the person in a new way... in a sense 00:50:28.32\00:50:33.26 that now the person allows the Holy Spirit to lead 00:50:33.29\00:50:36.70 and guide his or her life and that person now becomes 00:50:36.73\00:50:41.47 "a new creature," as it says in 2 Corinthians 5:17... 00:50:41.50\00:50:44.97 How does it go? "Old things are passed away 00:50:45.01\00:50:50.78 and all things have become new." 00:50:50.81\00:50:52.18 You become a new creation, it says. 00:50:52.21\00:50:54.25 "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, 00:50:54.28\00:50:56.62 old things have passed away, 00:50:56.65\00:50:57.99 all things have become new." 00:50:58.02\00:50:59.75 And you then become an ambassador for Christ 00:50:59.79\00:51:02.42 with the power of the Holy Spirit - to be able to 00:51:02.46\00:51:06.53 witness unto others of the great things 00:51:06.56\00:51:08.53 that God has done for you. 00:51:08.56\00:51:10.13 And I want to again highlight before we close 00:51:10.23\00:51:13.60 that the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Day of Pentecost 00:51:13.64\00:51:17.27 and the promise of the latter rain - the outpouring of the 00:51:17.31\00:51:21.21 Holy Spirit is coming soon to God's Children. Amen! 00:51:21.24\00:51:25.75 We should be preparing for the outpouring of 00:51:25.78\00:51:28.15 the Holy Spirit... how did they prepare? 00:51:28.18\00:51:30.55 We need to study, Acts 2, what were the disciples doing? 00:51:30.59\00:51:34.16 We need to be doing that, we need to empty ourselves 00:51:34.22\00:51:36.69 of sin - put away sin, come to the Lord 00:51:36.73\00:51:39.26 and say, "Lord, here I am, bless us with the Holy Spirit." 00:51:39.29\00:51:42.23 We need to ask for the blessing of the Holy Spirit 00:51:42.26\00:51:46.43 in the fullness of the measure that God wants to do 00:51:46.47\00:51:49.40 because the Day of Pentecost, 3,000 people were baptized. 00:51:49.44\00:51:53.61 We expect to see GREAT miracles take place 00:51:53.64\00:51:57.08 under the outpouring of the Holy Spirit - the latter rain 00:51:57.11\00:52:01.02 that is needed today to finish the work. 00:52:01.05\00:52:04.09 The work needs to be finished. 00:52:04.12\00:52:05.95 Jesus said, "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be 00:52:05.99\00:52:09.49 preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations 00:52:09.52\00:52:12.19 and then the end shall come." 00:52:12.23\00:52:14.10 Let us ask for this blessing, we need the blessing 00:52:14.10\00:52:17.13 of the Holy Spirit in the fullness of the power 00:52:17.17\00:52:19.47 because the time has come for God's people to be used 00:52:19.50\00:52:22.24 by the Lord in such a mighty way that they will 00:52:22.27\00:52:24.81 once again - the crowd, the multitudes will ask, 00:52:24.84\00:52:28.01 "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" 00:52:28.04\00:52:32.18 AMEN! Amen! Praise the Lord! Thank you! 00:52:32.21\00:52:35.05 You know, I'm sitting here thinking - "Praise God for 00:52:35.08\00:52:38.05 the Pentecost," praise God for the "resurrection, 00:52:38.09\00:52:41.52 the exultation of Jesus Christ," 00:52:41.56\00:52:43.89 but aren't we glad that Jesus promised to send another 00:52:43.93\00:52:49.23 just like Him Holy, I think of John 14:15 when Jesus 00:52:49.26\00:52:54.30 said, "If you love Me, keep my commandments," and it goes on 00:52:54.34\00:52:59.31 in the next verse, verse 16... 00:52:59.34\00:53:01.51 He said, "And... this is kind of a conditional thing... 00:53:01.54\00:53:04.91 if you're keeping My commandments, 00:53:04.95\00:53:06.75 I will pray the Father and He will send another Helper." 00:53:06.82\00:53:12.35 In the Greek that's "allos Parakletos" - one who is 00:53:12.39\00:53:16.16 exactly like Me is what that means. 00:53:16.19\00:53:19.06 He says, "He's going to send you one who's exactly like Me, 00:53:19.09\00:53:23.33 and He will abide with you forever." 00:53:23.37\00:53:26.27 He will live in you, He is the One... 00:53:26.30\00:53:28.97 The Holy Spirit is actually the One who is working in us 00:53:29.00\00:53:32.51 to will and to do His good pleasure, 00:53:32.54\00:53:34.74 that Holy Spirit power. 00:53:34.78\00:53:36.34 CA, your day was on tongues and I was thinking 00:53:36.38\00:53:39.68 as you were talking, you know, the Bible says the Holy Spirit 00:53:39.71\00:53:44.59 distributes the gifts of the Spirit as He wills. 00:53:44.62\00:53:48.86 So it can't be that everyone is going to do that. 00:53:48.89\00:53:52.83 Give us a quick summation. 00:53:52.86\00:53:55.03 The Lord promised us dunamis power. 00:53:55.06\00:53:58.50 That power came down with the great authority at the 00:53:58.53\00:54:02.70 Day of Pentecost and now we have the power to do what 00:54:02.74\00:54:06.98 Christ has called us to do, even unto the end of the world. 00:54:07.01\00:54:10.78 Christ will be with us through the power of 00:54:10.85\00:54:13.35 His Holy Spirit. Amen! 00:54:13.42\00:54:14.78 And Mollie, you did such a wonderful job on Peter's sermon. 00:54:14.85\00:54:18.22 Well I want to read something from 00:54:18.25\00:54:20.39 Sister White, if that's okay with you. Sure! 00:54:20.46\00:54:22.12 "The Pentecostal outpouring was heaven's communication 00:54:22.16\00:54:25.89 that the redeemer's inauguration was accomplished. 00:54:25.93\00:54:29.46 According to His promise, He had sent the Holy Spirit 00:54:29.50\00:54:32.90 from heaven to His followers as the token that He had 00:54:32.93\00:54:36.37 as Priest and King received all authority in heaven 00:54:36.40\00:54:39.91 and on earth and was under the anointing 00:54:39.94\00:54:42.38 word over His people." 00:54:42.41\00:54:43.75 So who has all power and all authority? 00:54:43.81\00:54:45.55 What does Jesus say? 00:54:45.58\00:54:46.92 "All power and all authority has been given unto Me 00:54:46.98\00:54:49.72 then He turns to Jill Morikone and He says, "Jill, go ye 00:54:49.75\00:54:53.62 therefore," and He distributes that power and authority 00:54:53.66\00:54:57.59 to us to take and be like Peter and teach a mighty sermon. 00:54:57.63\00:55:02.76 Praise God and I know, Jill, you did a wonderful job also 00:55:02.80\00:55:06.07 on the exaltation of Jesus. Give us a little synopsis. 00:55:06.10\00:55:10.44 If I can say just one thing on what Mollie said... 00:55:10.51\00:55:13.24 You said, "All authority, all power has been given Me 00:55:13.27\00:55:15.84 in heaven and in earth, go ye therefore, 00:55:15.88\00:55:17.65 the great commission, what you talked about Mollie, 00:55:17.68\00:55:19.68 it says "all authority." That word is "exousia" meaning 00:55:19.71\00:55:23.12 "all authority is given," so God gives us that authority. 00:55:23.15\00:55:27.56 That's just tremendous! 00:55:27.59\00:55:28.99 The Scripture I want to read is John 16:7: "Nevertheless, 00:55:29.02\00:55:31.96 I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away, 00:55:31.99\00:55:35.10 for if I do not go away, the Helper (Parakletos), 00:55:35.13\00:55:38.37 the Holy Spirit will not come to you, 00:55:38.40\00:55:40.64 but if I depart, I will send Him to you." 00:55:40.70\00:55:42.94 So praise the Lord that He wants to give 00:55:42.97\00:55:45.04 us the gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:55:45.07\00:55:46.84 Amen and Johnny, would you like to give us a little... 00:55:46.88\00:55:49.61 what's your take away from the firstfruits. 00:55:49.64\00:55:52.51 Well the blessing is that God wants to give us repentance. 00:55:52.55\00:55:56.85 This is a gift of God. Amen! 00:55:56.89\00:55:59.59 But the person has to respond and I would say to you that 00:55:59.62\00:56:02.49 God is calling upon people to repent and give their hearts 00:56:02.52\00:56:05.69 to the Lord and be baptized and get ready 00:56:05.73\00:56:08.53 for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in full measure. Amen! 00:56:08.56\00:56:12.27 And I just want to remind each of you that this is not 00:56:12.30\00:56:16.04 ... even though Pentecost was unique, it is NOT something 00:56:16.07\00:56:20.18 that just happened once. 00:56:20.21\00:56:21.54 These disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit repeatedly, 00:56:21.58\00:56:24.98 and we need to do what Jesus said. 00:56:25.01\00:56:27.52 We need to, every day before you even go out the door, 00:56:27.55\00:56:32.39 be praying to God... ASK, seek, knock, pray that God 00:56:32.42\00:56:37.16 will fill you with His Holy Spirit and then there are 00:56:37.23\00:56:40.00 three R's... in the school of Christ the 3 R's are: 00:56:40.03\00:56:44.23 Receive - receive the Holy Spirit. 00:56:44.27\00:56:47.84 Recognize - That He abides with you forever, that He never 00:56:47.87\00:56:53.14 leaves you or forsakes you, so recognize His presence 00:56:53.17\00:56:58.45 all day long and then the third is to... 00:56:58.48\00:57:01.28 Rely on Him totally. That's what Pentecost is all about. 00:57:01.32\00:57:05.72 This is the answer, this is God's gospel and 00:57:05.75\00:57:09.69 salvation is this simple - that we depend TOTALLY 00:57:09.72\00:57:13.73 upon God, so we rely on His Holy Spirit. 00:57:13.76\00:57:17.27 Ha! Wonderful study! Thank you and we invite you 00:57:17.30\00:57:20.17 to join us next time for the "Teaching Life 00:57:20.24\00:57:24.21 in the Early Church." 00:57:24.24\00:57:25.71
