came as our Redeemer; as our

the character of God, proved

can be kept. He fulfilled the

It is a time of God's judgment,

time of blessing and joy to the

forgiveness freely offered

wicked prospering?! Why are

the righteous being oppressed?
Why is there tribulation? Why

are they being persecuted?
Why are they being put to death?

God, where are You?" We
see that in the day of the Lord

with the justice and the
judgment of God against the
00:11:22.54\00:11:27.02
wicked. At that time, this
Psalm right here is answered.

"How long, O Lord?" He says,
"Now is the time. Now their

cup of iniquity is full,"
and this is when that judgment

takes place. The day of the
Lord is not only justice and

judgment for the wicked; it's
a day of blessing and joy to

the righteous. So let's look-

book of Daniel. When I was

hang around long enough to get a

sciences, and I ran across a

concept, which I also studied
when I was working on my degree

in mass communication. One
of the terms for sociological

significance in the 20 and
21st centuries particularly in

western cultures, and
that term we studied was called
00:15:50.58\00:15:53.68
popular culture - or pop
culture. Popular culture is
00:15:53.72\00:15:58.95
defined as the entirety
of attitudes, ideas, images,
00:15:58.99\00:16:05.03
perspectives, and other
phenomena within the mainstream
00:16:05.06\00:16:09.70
of a given culture or society.
So it's what most people think
00:16:09.73\00:16:14.60
about certain things in a
particular society. To go on,
00:16:14.64\00:16:18.31
it's the accumulation of
cultural products such as
00:16:18.34\00:16:21.74
music, art, literature,
fashion, dance, film-
00:16:21.78\00:16:26.48
we had to add cyberculture,
television, radio, and other
00:16:26.51\00:16:31.99
media that are consumed,
expected, and accepted in a
00:16:32.02\00:16:38.29
particular culture. For example,
state of the dead. How many
00:16:38.33\00:16:45.17
times have we heard an
award-winner or an athlete
00:16:45.20\00:16:50.24
or a musician or a politician
stand by the microphone and
00:16:50.27\00:16:55.24
say, "You know, I felt my
departed mother looking down
00:16:55.28\00:16:59.01
on me." How many times you
heard that kind of thing? Or,
00:16:59.05\00:17:01.22
"I felt strength from my
brother who is departed."
00:17:01.25\00:17:05.79
"I knew my mother and brother
were looking down on me from
00:17:05.85\00:17:09.12
heaven." That's part of
popular culture now. It's
00:17:09.16\00:17:13.90
expected and accepted, and
for the most part, when someone
00:17:14.00\00:17:17.80
makes a statement like that,
they are applauded or lauded
00:17:17.83\00:17:21.00
because it's part of popular
culture. In other words, this

idea that there are
people that are cheering us from
00:17:24.31\00:17:27.51
beyond goes beyond religion.
It's popular culture. Everybody

thinks that. You know? That's
what everybody believes- that

it's part of what we
call, 'popular culture.' So,

religionists believe it, but
also the secular world believes

it. And if they don't believe
it or follow it, they certainly

accept it when others say
it. You know? Nobody's going to

push back against it. As a
rule, we'll applaud that kind

of thing. I recall a sport
star saying not too long ago -

he said, "I'm not a believer,
but I could feel my dad looking

down and giving me strength,
looking down from above."

This particular sport
star was cheered; everybody

applauded because his father
was also a famous sport star
00:18:13.89\00:18:17.69
in that same sport. Because
that unbiblical view of the
00:18:17.73\00:18:24.53
state of the dead has gone
beyond religion, it's part of
00:18:24.57\00:18:27.87
popular culture. The closest
thing we can think of for
00:18:27.90\00:18:33.34
popular culture in ancient
Israel was the idea that the
00:18:33.38\00:18:38.05
Messiah was coming to
free Rome from- to free Israel,
00:18:38.08\00:18:43.22
rather, from Roman tyranny.
That was really popular culture
00:18:43.25\00:18:47.16
back then. The people believed
it, the ruling class believed
00:18:47.19\00:18:51.26
it, the priests believe
it, the disciples believed it,
00:18:51.29\00:18:56.33
and we find from the Spirit
of Prophecy that even John the
00:18:56.36\00:19:00.60
Baptist was not immune to that
belief. He had that belief, so
00:19:00.64\00:19:05.21
it was part of popular culture.
Anybody you talk to - anybody
00:19:05.24\00:19:08.84
you spoke to - would tell you,
"Oh, yes; the Messiah's coming
00:19:08.88\00:19:11.71
to free us from Rome and make
us number 1." The truth was,
