Amen. 00:02:10.43\00:02:12.36 Now each one of us has a different data cover, 00:02:12.39\00:02:15.10 and as I mentioned before the title of this lesson 00:02:15.13\00:02:17.67 for this particular day 00:02:17.70\00:02:19.93 or for this particular week March 10 to 16 00:02:19.97\00:02:22.20 is Debt a Daily Decision. 00:02:22.24\00:02:24.67 Every day we make decisions about whether or not 00:02:24.71\00:02:27.74 we want to go deeper in debt 00:02:27.78\00:02:30.01 or we want to eliminate some of our debt. 00:02:30.05\00:02:31.95 And debt is an easy thing to get involved in. 00:02:31.98\00:02:34.32 I think of the sales, 00:02:34.35\00:02:36.02 you know, whenever you get to holiday seasons... 00:02:36.05\00:02:38.39 And I think in America more of our holiday seasons 00:02:38.42\00:02:40.56 are surrounding ways of trying to get us more in debt. 00:02:40.59\00:02:43.66 Yes. 00:02:43.69\00:02:45.03 Even when you have good credit, 00:02:45.06\00:02:46.59 credit car companies are sending you letters, 00:02:46.63\00:02:49.80 they want to give you refinance, 00:02:49.83\00:02:52.30 zero percent for the next 6 months, 00:02:52.33\00:02:54.30 and all of a sudden it goes to 24%. 00:02:54.34\00:02:57.24 And in the small print... 00:02:57.27\00:02:58.61 I've seen some of those contracts. 00:02:58.64\00:03:00.41 Have you seen those credit card contracts? 00:03:00.44\00:03:02.61 When you open a credit card contract, 00:03:02.64\00:03:04.31 they find the smallest font, I think three point, 00:03:04.35\00:03:06.61 you can't read it. 00:03:06.65\00:03:08.55 And even when you go to the website, 00:03:08.58\00:03:10.42 you know, scroll all way down it's like, 00:03:10.45\00:03:12.05 you know, war and peace, and they say, 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.32 "Click here if you agree with all the conditions." 00:03:14.36\00:03:16.86 And when you get the first bill you said, 00:03:16.89\00:03:18.33 "I didn't agree with those conditions." 00:03:18.36\00:03:19.69 It said what's in the fine print. 00:03:19.73\00:03:21.86 And as we have said before when it comes to credit, 00:03:21.90\00:03:24.53 the devil is in the details. 00:03:24.57\00:03:26.84 But I looked up a couple of statistics just to side them 00:03:26.87\00:03:30.77 but before we do that, 00:03:30.81\00:03:32.14 let's read our memory verse together. 00:03:32.17\00:03:33.91 If you have your Bibles, 00:03:33.94\00:03:35.28 it's the New International Version 00:03:35.31\00:03:36.78 for this particular memory text. 00:03:36.81\00:03:38.61 And it's Romans 13:7, 8. 00:03:38.65\00:03:41.55 Let's read this together. 00:03:41.58\00:03:42.98 "Give to everyone what you owe them. 00:03:43.02\00:03:46.19 If you owe taxes, pay taxes, if revenue, then revenue, 00:03:46.22\00:03:50.83 if respect, then respect, if honor, then honor. 00:03:50.86\00:03:55.43 Let no debt remain outstanding, 00:03:55.46\00:03:58.57 except the continuing debt to love one another, 00:03:58.60\00:04:02.47 for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law." 00:04:02.50\00:04:06.88 I would haste to say that 00:04:06.91\00:04:08.24 whoever was a part of the committee 00:04:08.28\00:04:09.94 that transition, this was in a modern setting 00:04:09.98\00:04:13.38 because some of these words 00:04:13.42\00:04:16.35 you can see are focused on really how we deal 00:04:16.38\00:04:19.39 with life from day to day. 00:04:19.42\00:04:21.72 Very interesting, I went to credit.com to come, 00:04:21.76\00:04:23.79 to find out just 00:04:23.83\00:04:25.16 some basic questions about debt in America. 00:04:25.19\00:04:27.96 And in America, 00:04:28.00\00:04:29.83 we have statistics for everything. 00:04:29.86\00:04:33.30 In America we have a name for every disease. 00:04:33.34\00:04:35.57 We have conditions 00:04:35.60\00:04:36.94 that don't exist in other countries. 00:04:36.97\00:04:38.87 I remember years ago when we talked about... 00:04:38.91\00:04:42.34 What's that disease in America 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.15 that we have when people have a learning disability? 00:04:44.18\00:04:49.28 Okay, I caught you all up... 00:04:49.32\00:04:50.65 Learning disabled as all I can think of I don't know. 00:04:50.69\00:04:52.25 Well, dyslexia. Oh, yeah. Okay. 00:04:52.29\00:04:55.09 Dyslexia, reading disability. 00:04:55.12\00:04:57.16 Well, I found out in Japan they don't have dyslexia, 00:04:57.19\00:05:00.73 there's no such word 00:05:00.76\00:05:02.90 that may be why they learn so quickly. 00:05:02.93\00:05:05.53 Because in that society 00:05:05.57\00:05:06.90 they have not embraced this idea that you cannot read. 00:05:06.94\00:05:10.34 And some of the greatest inventions, 00:05:10.37\00:05:12.37 some of the greatest technological inventions 00:05:12.41\00:05:13.74 come out of those countries 00:05:13.78\00:05:15.11 where they don't have words to foster your inabilities. 00:05:15.14\00:05:19.01 But in America 00:05:19.05\00:05:20.38 we have statistics for everything. 00:05:20.42\00:05:21.82 For example, 00:05:21.85\00:05:23.18 according to credit.com as of August 3, 2015, it says, 00:05:23.22\00:05:27.59 "The vast majority of Americans are in debt. 00:05:27.62\00:05:30.83 According to a report 00:05:30.86\00:05:32.39 from Pew Charitable Trust published in July, 00:05:32.43\00:05:36.46 for the most part that debt comes 00:05:36.50\00:05:39.20 from what many people would call a good thing, 00:05:39.23\00:05:41.97 home ownership. 00:05:42.00\00:05:44.24 Of the 80% of Americans with debt, 00:05:44.27\00:05:47.38 44% have mortgage debt." 00:05:47.41\00:05:50.35 And that is a debt 00:05:50.38\00:05:51.71 that I think it comes into the acceptable category 00:05:51.75\00:05:55.08 except when you had what happened in 2008, 00:05:55.12\00:05:58.19 the market downturn 00:05:58.22\00:05:59.55 and then in some states like Texas 00:05:59.59\00:06:01.46 and many other, California, 00:06:01.49\00:06:04.16 thousands and thousands of homes were available 00:06:04.19\00:06:07.03 because people got into debt with variable rates. 00:06:07.06\00:06:10.27 You know, they got into a home with maybe 4% interest. 00:06:10.30\00:06:14.70 And they said, "Well, that's going to change." 00:06:14.74\00:06:16.07 And before they knew it 00:06:16.10\00:06:17.44 two years later, they were at 24%. 00:06:17.47\00:06:19.11 Some 31% interest. 00:06:19.14\00:06:20.81 And they just walked away from their homes. 00:06:20.84\00:06:22.64 Left entire neighborhoods like ghost towns. 00:06:22.68\00:06:25.98 But so you have to be very careful, 00:06:26.01\00:06:27.38 the other thing that was pointed out, 00:06:27.42\00:06:29.98 it says, "Americans may soon have 00:06:30.02\00:06:32.29 as much credit card debt 00:06:32.32\00:06:34.46 as they did during the great recession. 00:06:34.49\00:06:37.53 The average US household owes $16, 061 in credit card debt 00:06:37.56\00:06:42.86 up from 10% from $14,546 in 2006." 00:06:42.90\00:06:47.47 According to analysis released 00:06:47.50\00:06:49.50 by personal finance company NerdWallet. 00:06:49.54\00:06:53.14 And that was the company that traces debt. 00:06:53.17\00:06:56.11 But the Lord never intended for us to be in debt, 00:06:56.14\00:06:59.08 yet at certain intervals in our lives 00:06:59.11\00:07:00.98 everyone needs a helping hand. 00:07:01.02\00:07:05.49 It's amazing how statistics often become important to us 00:07:05.52\00:07:08.19 when we get older. 00:07:08.22\00:07:09.56 I read a statistic that I wish I would knew when I was 14. 00:07:09.59\00:07:12.43 It was pointed out 00:07:12.46\00:07:13.80 that if you put away $100 a week, 00:07:13.83\00:07:16.97 and don't touch it for 30 years, 00:07:17.00\00:07:20.30 you'll have over million dollars saved. 00:07:20.34\00:07:22.77 It's just $100 a week. 00:07:22.80\00:07:24.14 If I had known that at 14 years, 00:07:24.17\00:07:25.51 well, I'd been a millionaire now. 00:07:25.54\00:07:26.88 How many of us would have been in the same category. 00:07:26.91\00:07:29.04 Hundred dollars a week, don't touch it, 00:07:29.08\00:07:30.85 just put it in the bank, let it draw interest, 00:07:30.88\00:07:32.25 and you have over million dollars in cash. 00:07:32.28\00:07:34.72 And that's it. 00:07:34.75\00:07:36.08 That's 30 years later, so by the time you get 40, 00:07:36.12\00:07:38.52 you could be a millionaire. 00:07:38.55\00:07:39.89 But according to the scriptures, 00:07:39.92\00:07:41.52 there are number of principles bought out 00:07:41.56\00:07:43.39 in Sunday about borrowing and spending. 00:07:43.43\00:07:46.66 Well, wonderful examples. 00:07:46.70\00:07:48.36 But what is borrowing? 00:07:48.40\00:07:51.13 Couple of examples, 00:07:51.17\00:07:52.50 using something that belongs to another person 00:07:52.53\00:07:55.34 or another institution. 00:07:55.37\00:07:56.81 Debt in fact is when you don't have someone, 00:07:56.84\00:08:00.31 or some institution, some bank, some lending company 00:08:00.34\00:08:04.58 will in fact extend credit to you. 00:08:04.61\00:08:07.58 And there is some people that 00:08:07.62\00:08:09.82 they're driven by the next greatest thing. 00:08:09.85\00:08:13.25 I've known them, some cases where people say, 00:08:13.29\00:08:15.69 "My car is fully paid for, but I want to go on a vacation. 00:08:15.72\00:08:19.43 So I'm going to go ahead and get a loan 00:08:19.46\00:08:21.00 and put my car up as collateral." 00:08:21.03\00:08:23.40 "Or I want to start a business now 00:08:23.43\00:08:24.77 I put my home up as collateral." 00:08:24.80\00:08:26.37 They put those things that are secure on the line 00:08:26.40\00:08:30.84 and they put it at risk 00:08:30.87\00:08:32.21 because of something that they desire to have. 00:08:32.24\00:08:34.48 So let's look at couple of passages in the Bible. 00:08:34.51\00:08:36.98 "A borrowing is also increasing 00:08:37.01\00:08:38.55 your responsibility to another individual 00:08:38.58\00:08:41.28 or creating an indebted relationship with someone. 00:08:41.32\00:08:45.85 One of the principles we have, my wife and I have is, 00:08:45.89\00:08:49.86 if somebody in our family ask for money, 00:08:49.89\00:08:51.76 we just give it to them. 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.13 That's right. Yes. 00:08:53.16\00:08:54.50 Because it's nothing more uncomfortable 00:08:54.53\00:08:56.30 than being around a family member 00:08:56.33\00:08:57.67 that owes you money. 00:08:57.70\00:08:59.07 'Cause, "How you're doing, Jill? 00:08:59.10\00:09:02.40 I'm looking for that money you owe me. 00:09:02.44\00:09:04.81 Don't worry, I'm not upset with you." 00:09:04.84\00:09:07.04 And every time they see you, 00:09:07.08\00:09:08.41 "Don't worry, I didn't forget you, 00:09:08.44\00:09:09.88 I'll pay you, I promise. 00:09:09.91\00:09:11.65 I give you $20 this week 00:09:11.68\00:09:13.01 and if I could work something out, 00:09:13.05\00:09:14.38 I mean, when my taxes come in." 00:09:14.42\00:09:16.82 Whenever a family member 00:09:16.85\00:09:18.35 or somebody you can sit close enough 00:09:18.39\00:09:20.76 has a need do like the New Testament Church. 00:09:20.79\00:09:24.06 Don't consider yours, bear their burden 00:09:24.09\00:09:27.36 if the Lord has blessed you in such a way. 00:09:27.40\00:09:29.26 But some of the scriptures in the Bible 00:09:29.30\00:09:30.63 that point out the diabolical nature of debt. 00:09:30.67\00:09:33.37 Let's look at Psalm 37:21. Psalm 37:21. 00:09:33.40\00:09:38.04 And there are so many kinds of debts 00:09:38.07\00:09:40.01 that we can get into as you turn there, 00:09:40.04\00:09:41.94 I was thinking of credit card debt, car loans, 00:09:41.98\00:09:43.91 home loans, student loans, store credit cards, 00:09:43.95\00:09:46.38 equity loans, refinancing, variable rate mortgages. 00:09:46.41\00:09:50.22 And in our world today, 00:09:50.25\00:09:51.59 it's almost impossible in America or around the world 00:09:51.62\00:09:54.19 to do anything get on any airline, 00:09:54.22\00:09:56.12 travel to any hotel, 00:09:56.16\00:09:57.49 rent any car without a credit card. 00:09:57.53\00:10:00.40 When it was supposed to be something 00:10:00.43\00:10:01.76 that was optional, when I was growing up. 00:10:01.80\00:10:04.17 Psalm 37:21, do you have that, Shelley? 00:10:04.20\00:10:06.63 Yes. 00:10:06.67\00:10:08.00 "The wicked borrows and does not repay, 00:10:08.04\00:10:10.41 but the righteous shows mercy and gives." 00:10:10.44\00:10:13.27 All right. 00:10:13.31\00:10:14.64 Now that text kind of makes it... 00:10:14.68\00:10:17.88 It's talking about the wicked that borrow 00:10:17.91\00:10:19.95 but not everybody that borrow is wicked. 00:10:19.98\00:10:21.38 Yes. 00:10:21.42\00:10:22.75 Okay, so I, kind of, put that together 00:10:22.78\00:10:24.29 because we've all borrowed at one point or another. 00:10:24.32\00:10:27.09 We don't get a loan with a gun to the prick, 00:10:27.12\00:10:28.66 "Give me that money, 00:10:28.69\00:10:30.03 and I'll pay it back if I want to." 00:10:30.06\00:10:31.39 But it says it's talking about the ones who are wicked 00:10:31.43\00:10:34.16 and they borrowed, they don't want to repay. 00:10:34.20\00:10:37.33 There you go. They don't want to repay. 00:10:37.37\00:10:39.43 And some people that borrow, 00:10:39.47\00:10:41.50 you'll never hear from them again. 00:10:41.54\00:10:43.17 They just leave town or... 00:10:43.20\00:10:44.54 "What happened to so and so?" "I don't know." 00:10:44.57\00:10:45.91 "Are they still alive?" 00:10:45.94\00:10:47.48 That's the wicked that borrow and do not want to repay. 00:10:47.51\00:10:50.35 Ecclesiastes 5:5 is another very powerful text 00:10:50.38\00:10:53.38 about avoiding the pitfalls of borrowing. 00:10:53.42\00:10:56.82 Avoiding the pitfalls of borrowing. 00:10:56.85\00:10:59.35 Let's see whoever gets to that. Looks like Jill got there. 00:10:59.39\00:11:02.26 Ecclesiastes 5? Ecclesiastes 5:5. 00:11:02.29\00:11:05.83 "Better not to vow than to vow and not pay." 00:11:05.86\00:11:09.43 Matter of fact, read verse 4 00:11:09.46\00:11:10.97 because that has the scenario, all right? 00:11:11.00\00:11:13.07 "When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it, 00:11:13.10\00:11:15.74 for He has no pleasure in fools. 00:11:15.77\00:11:18.11 Pay what you have vowed. 00:11:18.14\00:11:19.51 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay." 00:11:19.54\00:11:22.01 And in the next verse, I think what does it say? 00:11:22.04\00:11:23.51 "Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin." 00:11:23.55\00:11:26.21 Wow. 00:11:26.25\00:11:27.62 And say before God it was a mistake. 00:11:27.65\00:11:29.25 That's right. Right. 00:11:29.28\00:11:30.62 So people will say... 00:11:30.65\00:11:32.35 And I've talked about this before, 00:11:32.39\00:11:33.72 I think I mentioned this maybe in one of our programs 00:11:33.76\00:11:35.82 or whether on air or not, 00:11:35.86\00:11:37.86 but you also have to be careful in making pledges. 00:11:37.89\00:11:40.20 Amen. 00:11:40.23\00:11:41.56 Because pledges is just as 00:11:41.60\00:11:45.87 a level of accountability when you make pledges. 00:11:45.90\00:11:48.40 For example, churches they're saying, 00:11:48.44\00:11:50.24 "We have to pay our mortgage off." 00:11:50.27\00:11:51.61 And so people say, 00:11:51.64\00:11:52.97 "I'll give a $100, I'll give $200." 00:11:53.01\00:11:55.14 And then the other one says it 00:11:55.18\00:11:56.54 without consulting the husband or the wife, and they say, 00:11:56.58\00:11:59.55 "Do you realize what you just did? 00:11:59.58\00:12:01.45 We can't afford $200 a month." And you put yourself in debt. 00:12:01.48\00:12:04.82 But if you do that 00:12:04.85\00:12:06.19 don't be an Ananias and Sapphira 00:12:06.22\00:12:08.32 if you don't know who they are... 00:12:08.36\00:12:09.72 I think it's in Acts 5, a horrible story. 00:12:09.76\00:12:12.89 They made a pledge and when God prospered them, 00:12:12.93\00:12:15.56 here is what's you can get the grantee. 00:12:15.60\00:12:17.30 Whatever you give to the Lord out of an honest heart, 00:12:17.33\00:12:19.53 He's going to bless. 00:12:19.57\00:12:21.24 But if you give to the Lord, He's going to bless. 00:12:21.27\00:12:23.91 But don't give to the Lord out of a desire to be gratified 00:12:23.94\00:12:27.81 or to be praised publicly 00:12:27.84\00:12:30.45 but privately you really want 00:12:30.48\00:12:32.58 just your own personal financial gain. 00:12:32.61\00:12:35.28 I began to look up that story and I thought if this way, 00:12:35.32\00:12:38.19 if the Lord dealt with people 00:12:38.22\00:12:39.55 that did what Ananias and Sapphira had done 00:12:39.59\00:12:42.72 there'll be so many dead church members. 00:12:42.76\00:12:44.93 I did a sermon once called heart attacks in holy places, 00:12:44.96\00:12:46.80 and it was about Ananias and Sapphira. 00:12:46.83\00:12:48.16 I remember. 00:12:48.20\00:12:49.53 But I read... 00:12:49.56\00:12:50.90 And Ellen White pointed out, she says the reason 00:12:50.93\00:12:52.27 why the Lord dealt so strictly with them 00:12:52.30\00:12:54.97 at the establishment of the church, 00:12:55.00\00:12:56.97 He wanted us to understand 00:12:57.01\00:12:59.24 that when we make a financial pledge to God 00:12:59.27\00:13:02.48 don't think that He's taking that lightly. 00:13:02.51\00:13:05.61 Because you're affecting the work, 00:13:05.65\00:13:07.68 and you are not being honest before God, as Peter said, 00:13:07.72\00:13:10.35 "You've lied to the Holy Spirit, 00:13:10.39\00:13:11.72 you've lied to God." 00:13:11.75\00:13:13.29 And they had a burial that day. 00:13:13.32\00:13:15.09 You know what, I just thought about it 00:13:15.12\00:13:16.46 that might be why so many churches 00:13:16.49\00:13:18.09 have a cemetery on their backyard. 00:13:18.13\00:13:21.30 It may be still happening, I don't know. 00:13:21.33\00:13:23.40 But look at another one, Deuteronomy 28:44, 45. 00:13:23.43\00:13:28.90 I've seen a lot of churches out here on the country 00:13:28.94\00:13:30.61 with cemeteries with increasing membership. 00:13:30.64\00:13:33.31 That's true. Mollie, you have that one? 00:13:33.34\00:13:36.08 Yes, I do. 00:13:36.11\00:13:37.45 "He shall lend to thee, and thou shall not lend to him. 00:13:37.48\00:13:41.72 He shall be the head, and thou shall be the tail." 00:13:41.75\00:13:44.35 Verse 45," Moreover all these curses 00:13:44.39\00:13:47.72 shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, 00:13:47.76\00:13:50.39 and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed 00:13:50.43\00:13:53.50 because thou hearkenedst not 00:13:53.53\00:13:55.46 unto the voice of the Lord thy God, 00:13:55.50\00:13:57.43 to keep His commandments and His statutes 00:13:57.47\00:14:00.77 which He commanded thee." 00:14:00.80\00:14:02.90 It talks about when you lend and he lends, 00:14:02.94\00:14:05.81 let there be an honest fiduciary relationship 00:14:05.84\00:14:08.64 between you and the other individual. 00:14:08.68\00:14:10.75 And in all you're purchasing, 00:14:10.78\00:14:12.11 "Owe no one anything except to love one another." 00:14:12.15\00:14:14.72 Romans 13:8. 00:14:14.75\00:14:16.72 Amen. Ms. Jill? 00:14:16.75\00:14:18.09 It's your round. Thank you, Pastor John. 00:14:18.12\00:14:19.45 It's wonderful. 00:14:19.49\00:14:20.82 God calls us, you know, the area of stewardship impacts 00:14:20.86\00:14:24.16 every aspect of our lives, you know? 00:14:24.19\00:14:26.76 It's who we are as Christians, 00:14:26.80\00:14:28.96 it's not only our time and our talents and priority 00:14:29.00\00:14:31.47 but the money, and it comes into everything. 00:14:31.50\00:14:33.74 My day is Monday, 00:14:33.77\00:14:35.30 which is stewardship and instant gratification. 00:14:35.34\00:14:38.41 You know when I was... 00:14:38.44\00:14:39.77 Wow, what a topic. It is. 00:14:39.81\00:14:41.14 When I was a kid, we didn't have cell phones. 00:14:41.18\00:14:45.11 But I have my cell phone sitting right here on the set. 00:14:45.15\00:14:47.28 And when I got my cell phone, 00:14:47.32\00:14:49.28 and then you kind of become joined at the hip 00:14:49.32\00:14:51.09 with your cell phone because of emails, 00:14:51.12\00:14:53.19 and texting, and work related stuff. 00:14:53.22\00:14:55.96 If I'm trying to send an email, and it's not going, 00:14:55.99\00:14:58.69 and you're trying to refresh it and hurry up, 00:14:58.73\00:15:01.50 or you're trying to Google something, 00:15:01.53\00:15:03.53 and it's taking time to load. 00:15:03.57\00:15:05.47 Sometimes I'm like, "Hurry up. Hurry up. 00:15:05.50\00:15:08.60 What's wrong with you?" 00:15:08.64\00:15:09.97 Now when I was a kid... 00:15:10.01\00:15:11.34 You're not addicted, are you? 00:15:11.37\00:15:12.71 I'm just... 00:15:12.74\00:15:14.08 So when I was young, Pastor John, 00:15:14.11\00:15:17.01 I could not have gotten information that fast. 00:15:17.05\00:15:19.71 That's true. 00:15:19.75\00:15:21.08 If I had wanted to correspond with someone, 00:15:21.12\00:15:22.45 I would have had to send a letter 00:15:22.48\00:15:24.52 or in the days when then we developed emails 00:15:24.55\00:15:27.99 but now you can text someone instantly. 00:15:28.02\00:15:29.92 If you wanted information instead of going to Google, 00:15:29.96\00:15:32.09 you would have to open up 00:15:32.13\00:15:33.46 the dictionary or the encyclopedia. 00:15:33.50\00:15:35.36 We are in a culture of instant gratification. 00:15:35.40\00:15:38.73 And you wonder why 00:15:38.77\00:15:40.10 they don't get back to you right away. 00:15:40.14\00:15:41.47 Absolutely. See, that's right. 00:15:41.50\00:15:43.30 So anything today can be delivered. 00:15:43.34\00:15:45.37 We deliver food, people deliver flowers, 00:15:45.41\00:15:48.11 people deliver furniture, 00:15:48.14\00:15:49.54 they can even deliver clean laundry 00:15:49.58\00:15:51.91 if you don't want to do your laundry. 00:15:51.95\00:15:53.62 They deliver groceries to your doorstep, 00:15:53.65\00:15:57.49 they deliver instant answers on Google 00:15:57.52\00:16:00.19 or on your phone or your computer. 00:16:00.22\00:16:02.76 People don't want to wait in line. 00:16:02.79\00:16:04.43 You know, if you go to Disney World 00:16:04.46\00:16:05.79 if you pay more, you don't have to wait in line, 00:16:05.83\00:16:09.00 and you can go right to the front of the line 00:16:09.03\00:16:10.77 if you're willing to pay more. 00:16:10.80\00:16:12.40 People are willing to pay more for faster internet 00:16:12.43\00:16:14.74 so they don't have to wait for their YouTube video 00:16:14.77\00:16:17.27 or whatever they're watching to load. 00:16:17.31\00:16:19.77 We live in that age of instant gratification. 00:16:19.81\00:16:22.04 Now you might say, Ms. Mollie, this is a current thing, 00:16:22.08\00:16:25.31 but I think instant gratification 00:16:25.35\00:16:26.82 goes all the way back to the beginning. 00:16:26.85\00:16:28.82 You think about Genesis 3, the entrance of sin. 00:16:28.85\00:16:33.49 And we won't turn there 00:16:33.52\00:16:34.86 but in verse 6 it talks about Eve, 00:16:34.89\00:16:36.73 and she saw... 00:16:36.76\00:16:38.09 Remember, she coveted the tree, she saw that the food was good, 00:16:38.13\00:16:42.33 she wanted to be made wise, 00:16:42.36\00:16:44.73 no it was the lure of being wise, 00:16:44.77\00:16:46.23 it wasn't reality but she wanted that. 00:16:46.27\00:16:49.54 And she took and she ate. 00:16:49.57\00:16:52.74 So what caused that desire in her 00:16:52.77\00:16:55.41 to give in to that sin of instant gratification? 00:16:55.44\00:16:59.15 It was the desire for food and pleasure, 00:16:59.18\00:17:01.45 maybe the lure of what she thought 00:17:01.48\00:17:03.05 she'd become wise. 00:17:03.08\00:17:04.55 But I would say it was giving in 00:17:04.59\00:17:06.05 to emotions and feelings. 00:17:06.09\00:17:08.92 If you think about David with Bathsheba. 00:17:08.96\00:17:11.06 2 Samuel 11, remember, he looked, he looked again, 00:17:11.09\00:17:15.93 and lingered, and then he took. 00:17:15.96\00:17:20.24 So what caused his fall in that same thing 00:17:20.27\00:17:24.31 with that instant gratification. 00:17:24.34\00:17:25.87 Now maybe it could be his desire for pleasure 00:17:25.91\00:17:28.04 or maybe it could be his lingering, 00:17:28.08\00:17:30.15 but really he's giving in 00:17:30.18\00:17:32.21 to his emotions and his feelings, 00:17:32.25\00:17:35.22 the same thing as Eve. 00:17:35.25\00:17:36.85 Let's look at another, Jacob and Esau. 00:17:36.89\00:17:38.42 And let's look this up. Genesis 25. 00:17:38.45\00:17:41.42 This is when Esau sold his birthright 00:17:41.46\00:17:44.76 to his brother Jacob. 00:17:44.79\00:17:46.63 Genesis 25, we'll start in verse 29. 00:17:46.66\00:17:51.57 Genesis 25:29. 00:17:51.60\00:17:56.57 Jacob cooked a stew, 00:17:56.60\00:17:57.97 and Esau came in from the field, 00:17:58.01\00:17:59.41 and he was weary." 00:17:59.44\00:18:01.58 In the Hebrew it means exhausted, faint, 00:18:01.61\00:18:05.41 he literally was weary. 00:18:05.45\00:18:08.08 "And Esau said to Jacob, 'Please feed me 00:18:08.12\00:18:10.69 with that same red stew, for I am weary.' 00:18:10.72\00:18:14.16 Therefore his name was called Edom. 00:18:14.19\00:18:15.79 But Jacob said," 00:18:15.82\00:18:17.16 Jacob is taking advantage of a situation here, 00:18:17.19\00:18:19.93 'Sell me your birthright as of this day.' 00:18:19.96\00:18:22.33 And Esau said, 'Look, I am about to die, 00:18:22.36\00:18:25.27 so what is this birthright to me?' 00:18:25.30\00:18:28.47 Then Jacob said, 'Swear to me as of this day.' 00:18:28.50\00:18:30.87 So he swore to him, 00:18:30.91\00:18:32.24 and sold his birthright to Jacob. 00:18:32.27\00:18:34.58 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils.'" 00:18:34.61\00:18:37.95 Then we see four quick action verbs 00:18:37.98\00:18:39.98 taking place here with Esau. 00:18:40.02\00:18:41.55 "He ate and drank, arose, and went his way. 00:18:41.58\00:18:47.09 Thus Esau despised his birthright." 00:18:47.12\00:18:50.49 Because gave in to instant gratification. 00:18:50.53\00:18:54.73 You could say it was because of his weariness, 00:18:54.76\00:18:56.90 you could say because of his desire for food, 00:18:56.93\00:18:59.33 but really what happened there 00:18:59.37\00:19:00.74 is the same as what happened with Eve and with King David, 00:19:00.77\00:19:04.07 he gave in to his emotions and his feelings. 00:19:04.11\00:19:09.08 By contrast, we look at delayed gratification. 00:19:09.11\00:19:14.42 Think about Moses. 00:19:14.45\00:19:16.72 Hebrews 11:25, 26. 00:19:16.75\00:19:21.22 Moses choosing rather to suffer affliction 00:19:21.26\00:19:24.23 with the people of God 00:19:24.26\00:19:25.69 than to enjoy the passing pleasures 00:19:25.73\00:19:28.30 of sin for a season. 00:19:28.33\00:19:29.76 As steaming the reproach 00:19:29.80\00:19:31.13 of Christ greater riches 00:19:31.17\00:19:32.90 than the treasures in Egypt 00:19:32.93\00:19:34.27 for he looked to the recompense of the reward. 00:19:34.30\00:19:37.21 So Moses could have said, "Well, it's easier in Egypt." 00:19:37.24\00:19:42.94 It feels good for me right now, 00:19:42.98\00:19:46.21 but he pushed aside his feelings, 00:19:46.25\00:19:49.02 he made a choice of his will, and he chose God's way 00:19:49.05\00:19:52.85 which was painful at the moment 00:19:52.89\00:19:54.86 but the reward was out of this world. 00:19:54.89\00:19:58.93 I think about Jesus. Literally. 00:19:58.96\00:20:00.50 Literally. See, that's right. 00:20:00.53\00:20:02.56 You think about Jesus in Matthew 4, 00:20:02.60\00:20:06.13 remember the three temptations when Satan came to Him. 00:20:06.17\00:20:10.31 There was appetite, and you think Jesus was hungry. 00:20:10.34\00:20:14.34 Now Esau, when he ate his bowl of lentils 00:20:14.38\00:20:17.98 so he was weary, 00:20:18.01\00:20:19.58 yes, but Jesus had fasted 40 days and 40 nights. 00:20:19.61\00:20:25.12 So he was literally starving much more than Esau 00:20:25.15\00:20:29.42 was just when he came in from the hunt. 00:20:29.46\00:20:31.49 And yet Jesus chose to delay his immediate gratification, 00:20:31.53\00:20:36.10 He chose to delay that because of the sin of that. 00:20:36.13\00:20:40.00 He overcame an appetite, we have the presumption, 00:20:40.04\00:20:42.40 we have the worship. 00:20:42.44\00:20:43.77 Remember, Satan said, "I'll give you all of this 00:20:43.81\00:20:45.21 if you just bow down and worship me." 00:20:45.24\00:20:47.41 So what caused Jesus to be able to lay that desire 00:20:47.44\00:20:51.41 for gratification, obedience to God's Word, 00:20:51.45\00:20:55.35 knowledge of God's Word, 00:20:55.38\00:20:57.35 He made a choice and really you could say 00:20:57.39\00:20:59.72 He did not rely on his emotions and His feelings. 00:20:59.75\00:21:02.79 To me that's the difference between instant gratification. 00:21:02.82\00:21:06.66 I see it, I want it... 00:21:06.70\00:21:08.03 We did a lesson before on that, 00:21:08.06\00:21:09.40 I see I want to take that would be instant, okay? 00:21:09.43\00:21:12.33 I just give in to my feelings at this moment 00:21:12.37\00:21:15.20 where if we delay something, I'm not acting on impulse, 00:21:15.24\00:21:19.77 I'm not acting on emotion, 00:21:19.81\00:21:21.84 I'm making a choice on principle, 00:21:21.88\00:21:25.38 that's the principle of delayed gratification. 00:21:25.41\00:21:29.18 Let's look at how we can learn delayed gratification, 00:21:29.22\00:21:32.05 five keys that I need to learn in my own walk 00:21:32.09\00:21:36.42 for delayed gratification. 00:21:36.46\00:21:37.99 And let's see if each one of you, 00:21:38.03\00:21:39.36 could you take a scripture here? 00:21:39.39\00:21:40.73 Sure. 00:21:40.76\00:21:42.40 Pastor John, I give you Matthew 16:24, 00:21:42.43\00:21:45.63 Mollie, Matthew 6:33, 00:21:45.67\00:21:47.87 Pastor Kenny, Luke 14:28, 00:21:47.90\00:21:52.27 and then, Shelley, I'll give you Hebrews 11, 00:21:52.31\00:21:55.34 we read that before Hebrews 11:25, 26. 00:21:55.38\00:21:57.98 So how do we learn delayed gratification? 00:21:58.01\00:22:01.38 Pastor John, Matthew 16:24. Matthew 16:24. 00:22:01.42\00:22:04.89 I'm sorry. No problem. 00:22:04.92\00:22:06.25 Not you. Matthew 16:24. 00:22:06.29\00:22:09.22 All right. 00:22:09.26\00:22:10.59 "Then Jesus said to His disciples, 00:22:10.63\00:22:12.26 'If anyone desires to come after Me, 00:22:12.29\00:22:14.80 let him deny himself, 00:22:14.83\00:22:16.97 and take up his cross, and follow Me." 00:22:17.00\00:22:19.93 Yes, so the first step to delayed gratification 00:22:19.97\00:22:22.50 is to deny ourselves. 00:22:22.54\00:22:23.87 That's right. 00:22:23.91\00:22:25.24 We talked about giving in to feelings and emotions 00:22:25.27\00:22:28.44 but when we learn delayed gratification, 00:22:28.48\00:22:30.78 we choose to deny ourselves. 00:22:30.81\00:22:33.25 Number two, Mollie, you have Matthew 6:33. 00:22:33.28\00:22:36.92 "But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, 00:22:36.95\00:22:40.56 and all these things shall be added unto thee." 00:22:40.59\00:22:43.59 So I call this step number two, prioritize. 00:22:43.63\00:22:46.46 Prioritize what really is important in your life. 00:22:46.49\00:22:49.93 Now, is eating this ice cream right now important? 00:22:49.96\00:22:53.34 Or is me choosing, 00:22:53.37\00:22:54.87 maybe I'm trying to lose weight. 00:22:54.90\00:22:56.24 And I'm saying, 00:22:56.27\00:22:57.61 "I'm going to give this up because this, 00:22:57.64\00:22:59.94 the end goal is more important to me." 00:22:59.97\00:23:01.68 Prioritize what is important to you. 00:23:01.71\00:23:03.55 Pastor Kenny, you have Luke 14:28. 00:23:03.58\00:23:08.68 "For which of you, intending to build a tower, 00:23:08.72\00:23:11.59 sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, 00:23:11.62\00:23:14.79 whether he have sufficient to finish it?" 00:23:14.82\00:23:17.66 So number three is plan. 00:23:17.69\00:23:20.40 We need to plan, 00:23:20.43\00:23:21.90 we need to deny ourselves prioritize 00:23:21.93\00:23:24.50 and then make a plan. 00:23:24.53\00:23:26.17 And, Shelley, if you could read Hebrews 11:25, 26? 00:23:26.20\00:23:29.77 Speaking of Moses, 00:23:29.80\00:23:31.21 "So he would choose rather to suffer afflictions 00:23:31.24\00:23:33.71 with the people of God 00:23:33.74\00:23:35.08 than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 00:23:35.11\00:23:38.41 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches 00:23:38.45\00:23:41.52 than the treasures in Egypt, for he looked to the reward." 00:23:41.55\00:23:45.95 So number four is to understand the reward. 00:23:45.99\00:23:48.79 You know, we never deny ourselves anything 00:23:48.82\00:23:51.26 if we don't understand what's coming in the future. 00:23:51.29\00:23:54.40 And the reward we have as Christians, 00:23:54.43\00:23:57.03 as following the Lord Jesus is truly out of this world. 00:23:57.07\00:24:01.17 So the peace, the joy, the eternal life, 00:24:01.20\00:24:03.87 and so to me we look forward to that. 00:24:03.91\00:24:06.17 And then number five, Galatians 6:9. 00:24:06.21\00:24:09.28 I want to quote it from a different version, 00:24:09.31\00:24:10.98 I love this version. 00:24:11.01\00:24:12.35 Greg and I claim this actually before we were married. 00:24:12.38\00:24:14.62 It says, "Don't get tired of doing 00:24:14.65\00:24:16.38 what is good. 00:24:16.42\00:24:17.75 At the right time you will reap a harvest, 00:24:17.79\00:24:20.12 the blessing if you don't give up." 00:24:20.16\00:24:22.86 So number five is to practice patience. 00:24:22.89\00:24:26.59 Excellent. 00:24:26.63\00:24:27.96 You know, Pastor Lomacang, 00:24:28.00\00:24:29.33 I looked at some statistics also, 00:24:29.36\00:24:31.30 and I'm afraid some of yours kind of, 00:24:31.33\00:24:33.30 mine in yours kind of cross. 00:24:33.34\00:24:35.20 That's okay. 00:24:35.24\00:24:36.57 But, Jill, that instant gratification, 00:24:36.60\00:24:38.14 one of the things 00:24:38.17\00:24:39.54 that in my looking up the statistics 00:24:39.57\00:24:42.71 that I found was that all the pictures taken 00:24:42.74\00:24:47.15 in the 19th century, 00:24:47.18\00:24:48.98 every picture that was taken in the 19th century, 00:24:49.02\00:24:52.05 every two minutes we take that many pictures today. 00:24:52.09\00:24:55.82 Wow! 00:24:55.86\00:24:57.19 Isn't that amazing how things have escalated? 00:24:57.23\00:25:01.23 Changed, yeah. Changed. Okay. 00:25:01.26\00:25:03.30 I've got Tuesday. 00:25:03.33\00:25:05.63 And Tuesday is living within your means. 00:25:05.67\00:25:09.77 Now to be a good steward, 00:25:09.80\00:25:11.71 one must live within their means 00:25:11.74\00:25:13.74 that seem like obvious. 00:25:13.78\00:25:17.45 Remember what a steward is. 00:25:17.48\00:25:20.58 A stewardship is utilizing 00:25:20.62\00:25:23.49 and managing all resources God has provided us. 00:25:23.52\00:25:27.82 Now, have you ever heard this saying, 00:25:27.86\00:25:31.19 "If your outgo exceeds your income, 00:25:31.23\00:25:37.20 your upkeep will be your downfall?" 00:25:37.23\00:25:40.24 So we're talking about living within our means. 00:25:40.27\00:25:43.87 If more money goes out of your bank account 00:25:43.91\00:25:47.64 than comes into your bank account, 00:25:47.68\00:25:49.94 there is a thing called overdraw, 00:25:49.98\00:25:53.18 you're going to overdraw that account. 00:25:53.21\00:25:55.52 And, you know, 00:25:55.55\00:25:56.89 I haven't overdrawn, thank for Lord, 00:25:56.92\00:25:58.52 my account in years, 00:25:58.55\00:26:00.09 but I can remember early marriage... 00:26:00.12\00:26:01.92 Remember back... 00:26:01.96\00:26:03.29 Maybe y'all don't. 00:26:03.32\00:26:04.66 We were so broke, we couldn't even pay attention. 00:26:04.69\00:26:07.00 And so we, you know, and there were times 00:26:07.03\00:26:09.93 when we would overdraw our account 00:26:09.96\00:26:11.83 and the cost to overdraw your account is astronomical 00:26:11.87\00:26:15.74 for them to cover a check for you. 00:26:15.77\00:26:17.77 Yes. 00:26:17.81\00:26:19.14 People could spare themselves 00:26:19.17\00:26:21.04 a world of hurt and pain and agony 00:26:21.08\00:26:24.51 if they would just follow this one basic principle. 00:26:24.55\00:26:28.38 Don't spend more money 00:26:28.42\00:26:29.85 than you make, live within your means. 00:26:29.88\00:26:34.52 Now, when we don't live within our means, 00:26:34.56\00:26:37.23 the result is what we've been, 00:26:37.26\00:26:39.46 Pastor John talked about so much, we go in debt. 00:26:39.49\00:26:44.63 And one of the easiest ways we fall into the trap of debt 00:26:44.67\00:26:48.60 is through credit cards. 00:26:48.64\00:26:50.81 Now, a credit card creates an allusion. 00:26:50.84\00:26:55.18 You get a credit card, 00:26:55.21\00:26:56.85 and let's say that it's for $300. 00:26:56.88\00:27:01.58 And, you know, what you automatically think. 00:27:01.62\00:27:03.85 "Ah! I've got $300." No, you don't. 00:27:03.89\00:27:07.42 You don't have a penny more than you had before, 00:27:07.46\00:27:10.73 it creates an illusion. 00:27:10.76\00:27:13.36 It's good. 00:27:13.40\00:27:14.73 Of wealth and... 00:27:14.76\00:27:17.17 And that credit card, 00:27:17.20\00:27:18.53 you know, you can use a credit card to pay 00:27:18.57\00:27:20.60 for anything whether you need it or not? 00:27:20.64\00:27:24.41 That credit card doesn't have a mind, 00:27:24.44\00:27:26.27 you're the one 00:27:26.31\00:27:27.64 that has the control over that credit card. 00:27:27.68\00:27:29.81 So you go and you buy something you don't need, 00:27:29.84\00:27:32.25 that credit card doesn't care, it will pay for it. 00:27:32.28\00:27:37.32 A person with a salary 00:27:37.35\00:27:39.75 of $40, 000 can spend 00:27:39.79\00:27:43.96 as if they're making $60,000 to $70, 000 for a while. 00:27:43.99\00:27:49.36 Yes. 00:27:49.40\00:27:50.73 Credit card debt can be like 00:27:50.77\00:27:54.67 thrashing around in quicksand. 00:27:54.70\00:27:57.57 What happens 00:27:57.61\00:27:58.94 when you thrash around in quicksand? 00:27:58.97\00:28:01.74 You get in deeper and deeper, you're trying to get out 00:28:01.78\00:28:06.92 when you're thrashing around in that quicksand, 00:28:06.95\00:28:09.42 but all you do is get in deeper, 00:28:09.45\00:28:12.02 and deeper, and deeper. 00:28:12.05\00:28:13.49 Credit cards can be 00:28:13.52\00:28:15.76 a stumbling block to even the one 00:28:15.79\00:28:18.73 with the best of heart, 00:28:18.76\00:28:21.40 best meaning in your heart of what you want to do. 00:28:21.43\00:28:26.07 Now let's talk a little bit about human nature. 00:28:26.10\00:28:29.97 Most of us tend to want what we see. 00:28:30.01\00:28:34.88 We are controlled... 00:28:34.91\00:28:36.38 I see it, what was it, Jill? I see it, I wanted, I take it. 00:28:36.41\00:28:41.68 So we tend to have that weakness, 00:28:41.72\00:28:47.09 lust of the flesh. 00:28:47.12\00:28:49.42 And we want it whether we can afford it or not, 00:28:49.46\00:28:52.33 we are visually driven. 00:28:52.36\00:28:54.40 And the advertising industry is very aware of that. 00:28:54.43\00:28:59.27 And do you know what that is when you see something 00:28:59.30\00:29:02.10 and you wanted whether you need it 00:29:02.14\00:29:04.37 or whether you can afford it? 00:29:04.41\00:29:06.07 That's called covetousness. Covetousness. 00:29:06.11\00:29:09.94 Now, I want all of us 00:29:09.98\00:29:13.45 to turn to Hebrews 13:15. 00:29:13.48\00:29:17.85 Hebrews 13:15, I want us to look at this 00:29:17.89\00:29:22.69 because here is some amazing council. 00:29:22.72\00:29:26.39 Remember, what we're looking at today 00:29:26.43\00:29:29.56 or this whole week was debt, a daily decision, 00:29:29.60\00:29:35.14 not just a weekly or monthly decision 00:29:35.17\00:29:37.91 but a daily decision. 00:29:37.94\00:29:39.84 And today, I'm looking at living 00:29:39.87\00:29:42.68 within your means. 00:29:42.71\00:29:44.78 Amazing council, Hebrews 13:15. 00:29:44.81\00:29:49.32 Jill, if you're there, Hebrews 13:15. 00:29:49.35\00:29:52.15 "Therefore by Him let us continually offer 00:29:52.19\00:29:54.76 the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, 00:29:54.79\00:29:58.39 giving thanks to His name." 00:29:58.43\00:30:00.23 Okay. 00:30:00.26\00:30:01.76 Now I must have given 00:30:01.80\00:30:03.30 the wrong scripture, Hebrews 13:15. 00:30:03.33\00:30:06.27 So I've got the wrong scripture copied down. 00:30:06.30\00:30:08.80 Let me give you the scripture that I meant. 00:30:08.84\00:30:11.37 "Let your conduct be without covetousness." 00:30:11.41\00:30:14.24 So if somebody will look up 00:30:14.28\00:30:15.61 and find where that scripture is, 00:30:15.64\00:30:17.21 I've put it down wrong. 00:30:17.25\00:30:19.05 "Let your conduct be without covetousness, 00:30:19.08\00:30:22.62 be content with such things as you have." 00:30:22.65\00:30:26.89 So conduct without covetous, 00:30:26.92\00:30:30.16 that is living within your means. 00:30:30.19\00:30:34.13 So I had that as Hebrews 13:15, 00:30:34.16\00:30:36.67 that's obviously not where that scripture is. 00:30:36.70\00:30:39.70 So we are to live without covetousness 00:30:39.73\00:30:42.30 and to live within our means. 00:30:42.34\00:30:45.21 So now we are in debt. 00:30:45.24\00:30:49.14 And Pastor Lomacang used 00:30:49.18\00:30:51.98 some of my statistics which was... 00:30:52.01\00:30:54.32 See, every household doesn't use credit cards. 00:30:54.35\00:30:59.25 And some households use credit cards, 00:30:59.29\00:31:02.92 but they pay them off every month, 00:31:02.96\00:31:04.53 then you know, you can use a credit card wisely 00:31:04.56\00:31:07.80 and pay it off every month, 00:31:07.83\00:31:09.43 that way you never have to pay interest. 00:31:09.46\00:31:11.97 But the average household, Pastor, 00:31:12.00\00:31:14.04 as you said 00:31:14.07\00:31:15.40 that uses a credit cared with a balance. 00:31:15.44\00:31:18.34 The balance of the household is over $16,000. 00:31:18.37\00:31:23.41 The average interest rate is over 16%. 00:31:23.45\00:31:28.72 Do you know how much interest you pay on that? 00:31:28.75\00:31:32.22 It's over $2,600. 00:31:32.25\00:31:36.19 And here is something that is just astounding. 00:31:36.22\00:31:39.36 As of the second quarter of 2017, 00:31:39.39\00:31:43.10 Americans were carrying a total 00:31:43.13\00:31:46.77 of $936.1 billion 00:31:46.80\00:31:53.48 in credit card debt. 00:31:53.51\00:31:55.44 Our economy is inflated 00:31:55.48\00:31:59.08 because people have bought that and it's on credit, 00:31:59.11\00:32:02.52 they don't have money to pay for it. 00:32:02.55\00:32:04.29 Now has someone looked up the scripture for me. 00:32:04.32\00:32:05.85 Hebrews 13... 00:32:05.89\00:32:07.22 13:5. Yeah. 00:32:07.26\00:32:08.59 13:5? Hebrews 13:5. I'm sorry. 00:32:08.62\00:32:11.39 Hebrews 13:5, 00:32:11.43\00:32:12.93 "Let your conduct be without covetousness 00:32:12.96\00:32:16.26 and be content with such things as you have." 00:32:16.30\00:32:21.50 Now I want all of us to turn to Proverbs if you will, 00:32:21.54\00:32:24.54 I've got some scriptures, 00:32:24.57\00:32:25.91 I want to still look up in Proverbs. 00:32:25.94\00:32:28.14 Pastor Lomacang, 00:32:28.18\00:32:29.51 will you look at Proverbs 22:7? 00:32:29.54\00:32:34.05 Sure. And, Jill, Proverbs 28:6. 00:32:34.08\00:32:38.69 Okay. Pastor Kenny, Proverbs 19:1. 00:32:38.72\00:32:44.29 And, Shelley, Proverbs 21:20. 00:32:44.33\00:32:48.56 Okay, Pastor Lomacang, are you there? 00:32:48.60\00:32:50.13 Sure. 00:32:50.17\00:32:51.50 It says, "The rich..." 00:32:51.53\00:32:52.87 What is the scripture? Proverbs 22:7. 00:32:52.90\00:32:55.50 Proverbs 22:7. 00:32:55.54\00:32:56.87 It's right after that favorite one we like, 00:32:56.91\00:32:58.44 train up a child. 00:32:58.47\00:32:59.97 It is amazing how it follows with that very same counsel. 00:33:00.01\00:33:02.88 "The rich rules over the poor, 00:33:02.91\00:33:04.71 and the borrower is servant to the lender." 00:33:04.75\00:33:08.15 Debt brings us into servitude to those that we owe. 00:33:08.18\00:33:12.52 Now, let me ask you a question, and this is, 00:33:12.55\00:33:16.19 goes with the scriptures that you and Pastor Kenny had. 00:33:16.22\00:33:19.33 Would you rather be a poor man with integrity 00:33:19.36\00:33:23.33 or a rich perverse fool? 00:33:23.37\00:33:25.53 And that's not a true question. 00:33:25.57\00:33:28.60 Integrity... 00:33:28.64\00:33:31.57 Jill, if you read Proverbs 28:6. 00:33:31.61\00:33:32.94 "Better is the poor who walks in his integrity 00:33:32.97\00:33:35.14 than one perverse in his ways, though he be rich." 00:33:35.18\00:33:38.55 And, Pastor Kenny, Proverbs 19:1. 00:33:38.58\00:33:43.32 19:1. 00:33:43.35\00:33:47.89 "Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity 00:33:47.92\00:33:50.59 than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool." 00:33:50.63\00:33:54.43 You know what a fool is. 00:33:54.46\00:33:55.80 A fool is someone who lacks judgment 00:33:55.83\00:33:58.00 or good sense. 00:33:58.03\00:33:59.37 Integrity is doing the right thing 00:33:59.40\00:34:01.60 just because it's the right thing. 00:34:01.64\00:34:03.87 And, Shelley, Proverbs 21:20. 00:34:03.91\00:34:08.21 Proverbs 21:20. 00:34:08.24\00:34:10.78 "There is desirable treasure, 00:34:10.81\00:34:13.21 and oil in the dwelling of the wise, 00:34:13.25\00:34:15.72 but a foolish man squanders it." 00:34:15.75\00:34:17.99 What does this foolish man that lacks good sense do? 00:34:18.02\00:34:21.02 He squanders it. 00:34:21.06\00:34:22.49 You know, you can be a rich person 00:34:22.52\00:34:24.19 that squanders or a poor person that squanders. 00:34:24.23\00:34:27.60 I wanted to leave us with this scripture, 00:34:27.63\00:34:30.40 and it's Psalm 36:25. 00:34:30.43\00:34:34.37 And we are to live 00:34:34.40\00:34:35.80 within our means, and we may say, 00:34:35.84\00:34:37.54 "No, I need to be in debt because I need something." 00:34:37.57\00:34:40.61 Proverbs 36:25. 00:34:40.64\00:34:43.48 "I have been young, and now am old, 00:34:43.51\00:34:46.75 yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, 00:34:46.78\00:34:50.65 nor his seed begging bread." 00:34:50.69\00:34:53.42 Trust God, He will take care of you. 00:34:53.46\00:34:56.32 You can live within your means. Amen. 00:34:56.36\00:34:58.76 Pastor Kenny. Praise the Lord. 00:34:58.79\00:35:00.13 Well covered. Praise the Lord. 00:35:00.16\00:35:02.10 All of our lesson is dealing with debt 00:35:02.13\00:35:04.17 and basically how to stay out of debt. 00:35:04.20\00:35:06.33 And I was kind of wondering why I got this one here 00:35:06.37\00:35:08.10 that's talking about, "Say no to debt." 00:35:08.14\00:35:10.87 Now, well maybe this is Lord speaking to me. 00:35:10.91\00:35:14.08 But let's maybe start out with a question, 00:35:14.11\00:35:16.01 I'm not sure that the answer we would have it in the sense 00:35:16.04\00:35:19.68 that some people will say to others, 00:35:19.71\00:35:22.65 "You are in big debt." 00:35:22.68\00:35:24.45 Now what does it really take to, 00:35:24.49\00:35:25.82 you know, make a debt or have a debt? 00:35:25.85\00:35:28.06 Let's say for instance 00:35:28.09\00:35:29.42 that the Pastor John buys him a house at $100,000. 00:35:29.46\00:35:34.73 You buy the house. 00:35:34.76\00:35:36.10 You have it appraised later and it appraises for $300,000. 00:35:36.13\00:35:40.20 Now would you call that a debt 00:35:40.24\00:35:44.01 or would you call that really that you have 00:35:44.04\00:35:45.71 actually made money on that house? 00:35:45.74\00:35:47.91 Yeah, a profit actually... 00:35:47.94\00:35:49.64 It's a profit but yet in a sense I look at it 00:35:49.68\00:35:52.88 and I said yes or no. 00:35:52.91\00:35:54.45 You know, I bought a lot of houses 00:35:54.48\00:35:55.82 over the years and sold lot of houses over the years, 00:35:55.85\00:35:57.89 it is a debt in a sense that you owe the $100,000. 00:35:57.92\00:36:01.39 So you still are obligated to pay it, 00:36:01.42\00:36:03.36 but yet it's, I want to say it, it's a good debt. 00:36:03.39\00:36:07.10 It's good because you have a profit of $200, 000 to back 00:36:07.13\00:36:11.67 that up with something you had to sell it quickly, 00:36:11.70\00:36:14.00 you could sell rather quickly for that easily 00:36:14.04\00:36:16.97 or you'll make it little less. 00:36:17.01\00:36:18.34 An asset. Yeah. 00:36:18.37\00:36:20.18 So we have to look at debt, is there a time 00:36:20.21\00:36:23.18 that we should or could go into debt 00:36:23.21\00:36:25.88 and it will be okay. 00:36:25.91\00:36:27.55 'Cause here it's like we never go into debt 00:36:27.58\00:36:29.72 because it's wrong and it is sinful to do it. 00:36:29.75\00:36:32.32 There are times, 00:36:32.35\00:36:33.79 which is acceptable to maybe borrow something 00:36:33.82\00:36:37.56 but, again, it's like been brought out here, 00:36:37.59\00:36:39.46 you want to make sure you'd be able to pay it back 00:36:39.49\00:36:41.80 by the grace of God at least the best you can see 00:36:41.83\00:36:43.30 and understand 00:36:43.33\00:36:44.67 it's been a wise choice and decision. 00:36:44.70\00:36:46.53 So we're going to say no to debt. 00:36:46.57\00:36:47.94 What is debt? 00:36:47.97\00:36:49.40 It's been discussed here something 00:36:49.44\00:36:51.01 that's owe to what? 00:36:51.04\00:36:52.57 Another person, you owe it to them, 00:36:52.61\00:36:54.31 you have to pay it back and there are conditions 00:36:54.34\00:36:56.21 in an owing, 00:36:56.24\00:36:57.58 you are obligated to pay it back. 00:36:57.61\00:36:59.18 If you don't, 00:36:59.21\00:37:00.55 somebody will come and get your attention 00:37:00.58\00:37:03.02 if you're not paying it back. 00:37:03.05\00:37:04.39 You know that, you get the cards, and letters, 00:37:04.42\00:37:05.75 and someone will knock at your door. 00:37:05.79\00:37:08.49 Webster dictionary says... 00:37:08.52\00:37:09.86 I thought it was interesting, 00:37:09.89\00:37:11.23 it said this when it talked and gave a definition of debt, 00:37:11.26\00:37:14.56 it just said theology, sin. 00:37:14.60\00:37:20.74 I thought it is fascinating. 00:37:20.77\00:37:23.41 In theology, sin. 00:37:23.44\00:37:26.51 Oh, wow, that's kind of an interesting thought 00:37:26.54\00:37:28.54 and kind of deep even for Webster's. 00:37:28.58\00:37:32.08 Anyway, how do we get into debt same way 00:37:32.11\00:37:34.98 everybody brought out. 00:37:35.02\00:37:36.79 Same way as the government is in debt. 00:37:36.82\00:37:38.65 They spend a whole lot more than they bring in, 00:37:38.69\00:37:40.86 that's the same way with us, 00:37:40.89\00:37:42.22 that's how we get in this mess simply 00:37:42.26\00:37:43.59 put what we're talking about everyone. 00:37:43.63\00:37:45.86 Deuteronomy 28:12. 00:37:45.89\00:37:47.70 I think someone read that so, 00:37:47.73\00:37:49.06 "Thou shalt lend unto many nations, 00:37:49.10\00:37:50.97 and thou shalt not borrow." 00:37:51.00\00:37:52.83 I think the main thing here 00:37:52.87\00:37:54.20 is what I'm gonna try and cover quickly as we can is 00:37:54.24\00:37:56.30 that God has a plan 00:37:56.34\00:37:57.67 that we do not have to go into debt, 00:37:57.71\00:38:00.21 saying no to debt because He says in bottom line, 00:38:00.24\00:38:03.38 "I'm going to bless you, 00:38:03.41\00:38:04.75 I'm going to bless everything that your hands do." 00:38:04.78\00:38:07.05 And when I bless you, 00:38:07.08\00:38:08.42 and I give you all these things, 00:38:08.45\00:38:09.78 there's no need for you to have to borrow. 00:38:09.82\00:38:11.75 You will be able to loan to other people to show 00:38:11.79\00:38:13.52 the blessings 00:38:13.56\00:38:14.89 that you're receiving from heaven. 00:38:14.92\00:38:16.26 So as we read so many things, 00:38:16.29\00:38:17.63 hopefully it will come in into being here with us. 00:38:17.66\00:38:19.93 The part of Deuteronomy 28:12 says, 00:38:19.96\00:38:22.63 "God gives a promise." 00:38:22.66\00:38:24.40 Now what does it say, 00:38:24.43\00:38:25.77 "Thou shalt lend unto many nations, 00:38:25.80\00:38:27.74 and thou shalt not borrow." 00:38:27.77\00:38:29.10 That's the last part of it. 00:38:29.14\00:38:30.47 Let's go back to the other part. 00:38:30.51\00:38:31.84 It said, God gives a promise here. 00:38:31.87\00:38:33.81 He says, "I'm going to open, 00:38:33.84\00:38:35.44 I will open up 00:38:35.48\00:38:36.81 His good treasures, think about, 00:38:36.85\00:38:38.18 I'm going to open up some treasures for you." 00:38:38.21\00:38:40.42 And Psalm 33:7, someone read that. 00:38:40.45\00:38:42.92 It's His storehouse, it's His treasure house, 00:38:42.95\00:38:45.15 He's going to open for each and every one of us. 00:38:45.19\00:38:47.49 It says, here is Psalm 33:7, 00:38:47.52\00:38:49.32 "He gathereth the waters of the sea together," 00:38:49.36\00:38:52.03 notice this, "as a heap, 00:38:52.06\00:38:54.53 He layeth up the depth in his storehouses." 00:38:54.56\00:38:57.73 Notice this, God says He will bless all, 00:38:57.77\00:39:01.04 we're talking about material things here, 00:39:01.07\00:39:02.67 material things. 00:39:02.70\00:39:04.37 And then He make sure, 00:39:04.41\00:39:05.74 we're going to have in abundance 00:39:05.77\00:39:07.38 according to Deuteronomy 30:9. 00:39:07.41\00:39:09.74 There's going to be an abundance of it 00:39:09.78\00:39:11.48 if we are in obedience to what He ask us to do. 00:39:11.51\00:39:14.75 That way we would have no need to borrow. 00:39:14.78\00:39:17.55 I mean to me that makes sense. 00:39:17.59\00:39:18.95 There's an abundance, God's blessing, 00:39:18.99\00:39:20.52 why would we need to borrow 00:39:20.56\00:39:21.89 if we have an abundance of these things. 00:39:21.92\00:39:24.36 Deuteronomy 15:6, someone read that. 00:39:24.39\00:39:26.39 I think they read it before, 00:39:26.43\00:39:28.30 it says, "For the Lord thy God blesseth thee, 00:39:28.33\00:39:30.17 as He promised thee, 00:39:30.20\00:39:31.53 and thou shalt lend money unto nations, 00:39:31.57\00:39:34.00 but thou shalt not borrow, 00:39:34.04\00:39:35.37 and thou shalt not reign over many nations, 00:39:35.40\00:39:38.37 but thou shall not reign over thee." 00:39:38.41\00:39:40.34 Thou shalt reign over nations but none is to rule over us. 00:39:40.38\00:39:43.78 That's in I think Deuteronomy 15:6. 00:39:43.81\00:39:45.95 So He's promising 00:39:45.98\00:39:47.32 what is God's plan for us as His children. 00:39:47.35\00:39:49.78 We're not to be in subjection to any other nations, 00:39:49.82\00:39:52.65 or to some, or to banks, or to other people 00:39:52.69\00:39:55.49 because we are in bondage, and we're in what? 00:39:55.52\00:39:57.43 It puts us in a form of slavery when we have an obligation. 00:39:57.46\00:40:01.26 I remember when I bought my first house and the banker, 00:40:01.30\00:40:03.33 I didn't get it through my head until he shook. 00:40:03.37\00:40:04.93 He shook my hand many years ago, and he said, 00:40:04.97\00:40:07.17 "Well, buddy, we're partners now 00:40:07.20\00:40:08.67 for the next 20 years." 00:40:08.70\00:40:10.91 You know, I really didn't want to be a partner with him 00:40:10.94\00:40:12.51 for 20 years but looks I am. 00:40:12.54\00:40:14.61 That's when you're young and foolish, 00:40:14.64\00:40:15.98 you didn't realize that, but I think he let me know, 00:40:16.01\00:40:17.85 "We're in partnership, 00:40:17.88\00:40:19.21 I'll be seeing you for the next 20 years 00:40:19.25\00:40:20.58 unless you pay this thing off." 00:40:20.62\00:40:22.22 Here, again, is a promise, God gives us of surety 00:40:22.25\00:40:24.65 that if Israel should have obey if we obey Him, 00:40:24.69\00:40:27.49 He's going to bless us with the material 00:40:27.52\00:40:29.69 and financial things, that's good. 00:40:29.72\00:40:32.49 We read Proverbs 22:7 said, "The rich ruleth over the poor, 00:40:32.53\00:40:37.03 and the borrower is servant of the lender." 00:40:37.07\00:40:39.23 That just makes sense to us for sure. 00:40:39.27\00:40:41.77 This is God's plan for His people, 00:40:41.80\00:40:43.41 it's always been for Israel and it's for us. 00:40:43.44\00:40:45.64 Deuteronomy 28:1, notice this, 00:40:45.67\00:40:48.84 "And it shall come to pass, 00:40:48.88\00:40:50.25 if thou shalt hearken diligently 00:40:50.28\00:40:51.71 unto the voice of the Lord thy God, 00:40:51.75\00:40:53.88 to observe and to do all His" what? 00:40:53.92\00:40:56.45 "Commandments which I command thee this day," 00:40:56.48\00:40:58.85 Deuteronomy 28:1, 00:40:58.89\00:41:00.42 "that the Lord thy God will set thee on high 00:41:00.46\00:41:03.12 above all nations on the earth." 00:41:03.16\00:41:05.66 This is what God wants to do for us, 00:41:05.69\00:41:08.76 He wants to set us on high. 00:41:08.80\00:41:11.80 Remember, God was telling them, 00:41:11.83\00:41:13.80 your eternal, He's telling us today, 00:41:13.84\00:41:15.90 "Your eternal destiny is in your hands." 00:41:15.94\00:41:18.94 We have freewill, don't we? 00:41:18.97\00:41:20.34 And God is telling us that, 00:41:20.38\00:41:21.71 "Your eternal destiny is in your hands right now. 00:41:21.74\00:41:23.75 And, in fact, when you make a choice you tie My hands." 00:41:23.78\00:41:27.08 Sounds kind of odd that we could tie God's hands, 00:41:27.12\00:41:29.75 put Him in that position. 00:41:29.78\00:41:31.15 So He rewards man 00:41:31.19\00:41:32.79 according to certainly the deeds that he's done. 00:41:32.82\00:41:34.92 Someone read, I think it was Matthews 6:33, 00:41:34.96\00:41:37.53 "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, 00:41:37.56\00:41:38.89 and his righteousness, 00:41:38.93\00:41:40.26 all these other things will be added unto him." 00:41:40.30\00:41:42.16 So if we borrow and I think probably everyone here 00:41:42.20\00:41:46.57 probably have it one time or the other, we borrowed. 00:41:46.60\00:41:50.21 But we had the good intentions, 00:41:50.24\00:41:51.57 you had stability in order to pay this debt back, 00:41:51.61\00:41:55.18 you know, that's what we should be doing, 00:41:55.21\00:41:57.25 that's what God wants us to do. 00:41:57.28\00:41:58.61 And that's what 00:41:58.65\00:41:59.98 I wanted always come by, always said well, 00:42:00.02\00:42:01.35 you know, God wants us to be the what? 00:42:01.38\00:42:02.92 The head and not the tail. 00:42:02.95\00:42:04.95 And I thought, well, that's kind of interesting 00:42:04.99\00:42:06.32 because that's what 00:42:06.35\00:42:07.69 He's telling us here in Deuteronomy 00:42:07.72\00:42:09.06 and that's what He says in Deuteronomy 8:13. 00:42:09.09\00:42:12.23 You be the head and not the tail. 00:42:12.26\00:42:13.93 And I like part of the passage it says, 00:42:13.96\00:42:15.70 you're to be above only and not beneath. 00:42:15.73\00:42:20.14 That makes it pretty clear 00:42:20.17\00:42:21.50 what God says when we go into debt, 00:42:21.54\00:42:22.87 then we put ourselves on the bottom as it were 00:42:22.90\00:42:24.91 and things can happen. 00:42:24.94\00:42:26.47 Counsels on Stewardship, 00:42:26.51\00:42:27.91 this is on page 272 begins with his message on debt. 00:42:27.94\00:42:32.18 It's clear, I think it's in our lesson here, 00:42:32.21\00:42:34.22 it says, "There must be a strict regard to economy 00:42:34.25\00:42:37.32 or a heavy debt will incur." 00:42:37.35\00:42:38.75 Makes sense what you've been talking about. 00:42:38.79\00:42:41.22 "Keep within your bounds." 00:42:41.26\00:42:42.59 This is harder to do than, at least, for me 00:42:42.62\00:42:45.36 it's little harder to do than what, 00:42:45.39\00:42:46.73 you know, to stay within your boundaries, 00:42:46.76\00:42:48.10 it's saying here, 00:42:48.13\00:42:49.46 "Shun the incurring of debt as you would shun leprosy." 00:42:49.50\00:42:53.30 Well, that make it pretty plain to me. 00:42:53.34\00:42:55.77 Strive to owe no man, what? 00:42:55.80\00:42:57.21 Bible said, don't owe no man anything. 00:42:57.24\00:42:59.97 Someone mentioned buy now, pay later. 00:43:00.01\00:43:01.61 Man, that's the way that got us in this mess 00:43:01.64\00:43:03.61 that we're in. 00:43:03.65\00:43:04.98 And we realize that credit cards, 00:43:05.01\00:43:06.35 and we're just talking $15,000 average household, 00:43:06.38\00:43:08.58 individually it's $5,000, $6,000 a piece. 00:43:08.62\00:43:11.12 Average household, 00:43:11.15\00:43:12.49 that person at 33% has at least two credit cards, 00:43:12.52\00:43:16.66 18% has 3 to 4, 00:43:16.69\00:43:19.66 10% has 5 to 6, and more credit cards. 00:43:19.69\00:43:23.03 So they're putting this debt upon, 00:43:23.06\00:43:25.70 you know, as fast as they can go out 00:43:25.73\00:43:27.07 and see something they want, they buy it. 00:43:27.10\00:43:29.77 Here we see in our last minute or so here, the US debt, 00:43:29.80\00:43:34.28 we've learned to go in debt and be in debt 00:43:34.31\00:43:35.84 because ever since this situation started 00:43:35.88\00:43:38.61 the government had a fluctuating debt. 00:43:38.65\00:43:40.92 You realize when they started to keep in track of it in 1789 00:43:40.95\00:43:45.42 and every year 00:43:45.45\00:43:46.79 since then except one year 1935 and 1936 00:43:46.82\00:43:50.83 we were spending more than we came in. 00:43:50.86\00:43:53.86 We've been in debt as a country 00:43:53.90\00:43:55.23 ever since this started in 1789. 00:43:55.26\00:43:58.70 We are over $20 trillion in debt. 00:43:58.73\00:44:02.14 If you ever look some of that up on, 00:44:02.17\00:44:04.21 shown on that debt clock, you better look that up, 00:44:04.24\00:44:06.47 on the debt clock you can actually look at that. 00:44:06.51\00:44:08.38 You cannot write down 00:44:08.41\00:44:10.25 how fast we are going into debt, 00:44:10.28\00:44:12.01 it moves so fast, so quick by the tens 00:44:12.05\00:44:13.72 of thousands of dollars, you can't. 00:44:13.75\00:44:15.52 I tried to write down, I can't do it. 00:44:15.55\00:44:17.89 Over $20 trillion. 00:44:17.92\00:44:19.25 In 1980, we were only $900 and some billion. 00:44:19.29\00:44:23.29 Look at how it's changed. Only. 00:44:23.32\00:44:24.66 Only. Thank you. 00:44:24.69\00:44:26.39 And we're paying... 00:44:26.43\00:44:28.03 See, we've learned this thing called debt and get in debt 00:44:28.06\00:44:30.03 because that's the way it is our country, 00:44:30.07\00:44:31.40 there's some people use as, 00:44:31.43\00:44:32.77 "Well, I can do it because the country is." 00:44:32.80\00:44:34.24 Now that's not good reasoning at all. 00:44:34.27\00:44:35.87 God says stay out of it. 00:44:35.90\00:44:37.97 We realize here that we pay 00:44:38.01\00:44:39.81 or probably about $250 billion 00:44:39.84\00:44:44.15 a year in interest alone. 00:44:44.18\00:44:47.42 We're in a point now, 00:44:47.45\00:44:48.78 we almost can't payback 00:44:48.82\00:44:50.32 the interest on our national debt. 00:44:50.35\00:44:51.95 And, Pastor John, 00:44:51.99\00:44:53.32 they're holding you accountable, 00:44:53.36\00:44:54.69 they're holding you $67,000 individually. 00:44:54.72\00:44:57.26 If you're a tax payer, they say you owe $170,000. 00:44:57.29\00:45:02.26 Interesting how they do that. 00:45:02.30\00:45:04.00 They break it down to say we are each accountable. 00:45:04.03\00:45:07.60 So we want to make sure by God's grace, we do what? 00:45:07.64\00:45:09.80 Owe no man anything, stay out of debt. 00:45:09.84\00:45:11.37 If we are by God's grace, do what? 00:45:11.41\00:45:13.11 Pay it back as soon as you can 00:45:13.14\00:45:14.68 and, you know, don't let the enemy 00:45:14.71\00:45:16.04 come in and get away, 00:45:16.08\00:45:17.41 we can't give this 'cause of God. 00:45:17.45\00:45:18.78 Okay. My day is saving and investing. 00:45:18.81\00:45:22.92 Here's something interesting that I looked up. 00:45:22.95\00:45:24.95 Okay. 00:45:24.99\00:45:26.39 In the Bible 00:45:26.42\00:45:27.76 there are over 2, 350 verses 00:45:27.79\00:45:33.80 on money and finances. 00:45:33.83\00:45:35.80 Wow. 00:45:35.83\00:45:37.17 Fifteen percent of the Bible 00:45:37.20\00:45:38.87 is talking about money and finances, 00:45:38.90\00:45:41.27 more than any other topic, more than hell, 00:45:41.30\00:45:43.41 more than heaven, more than prayer. 00:45:43.44\00:45:47.64 So we see how important money is. 00:45:47.68\00:45:51.58 Please open your Bibles to Proverbs 6, 00:45:51.61\00:45:55.92 we're going to look at 6 through 8. 00:45:55.95\00:45:57.72 And I hope to have time to give you 00:45:57.75\00:45:59.29 some practical ideas today. 00:45:59.32\00:46:02.12 We'll see. 00:46:02.16\00:46:03.49 Proverbs 6:6-8. 00:46:03.53\00:46:08.46 It says, "Go to the ant, you sluggard! 00:46:08.50\00:46:11.63 Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain, 00:46:11.67\00:46:15.60 overseer or ruler, 00:46:15.64\00:46:17.94 provides her supplies in the summer, 00:46:17.97\00:46:21.24 and gathers her food in the harvest." 00:46:21.28\00:46:24.95 See, ants work to lay aside provision for the winter. 00:46:24.98\00:46:29.92 And if we are wise enough to save money routinely 00:46:29.95\00:46:35.42 for a specific purpose, 00:46:35.46\00:46:37.76 we are following the ants example. 00:46:37.79\00:46:40.76 So what when we're talking about saving, 00:46:40.80\00:46:43.60 I want to talk about having enough money 00:46:43.63\00:46:46.10 to meet your financial needs, 00:46:46.13\00:46:48.14 not hoarding, not becoming selfish, 00:46:48.17\00:46:50.54 not letting the love of money overcome you 00:46:50.57\00:46:53.94 but providing for your family 00:46:53.98\00:46:56.08 and having enough to meet your needs. 00:46:56.11\00:46:59.71 If there's anything 00:46:59.75\00:47:01.08 that I could tell you as a parent 00:47:01.12\00:47:02.88 or as a grandparent, 00:47:02.92\00:47:04.59 teach your children to tithe and to save. 00:47:04.62\00:47:10.06 I mean, that first 10% belongs to the Lord, 00:47:10.09\00:47:12.69 return it to the Lord 00:47:12.73\00:47:14.06 because it is absolutely amazing. 00:47:14.10\00:47:16.46 And I wish I had time to tell you the stories, 00:47:16.50\00:47:18.63 but 90% that is blessed by God 00:47:18.67\00:47:22.50 goes a whole lot further than 100% 00:47:22.54\00:47:24.64 that doesn't have His blessing. 00:47:24.67\00:47:26.44 Yes. That's right. 00:47:26.47\00:47:27.81 But the second thing that I would tell parents 00:47:27.84\00:47:30.01 and grandparents to teach your children 00:47:30.05\00:47:32.28 is to save 10% of your income. 00:47:32.31\00:47:36.48 First 10% goes to God, 00:47:36.52\00:47:38.52 second 10% goes into a savings account, 00:47:38.55\00:47:41.49 and you might think, "There's no way 00:47:41.52\00:47:43.19 I could live on 80% of my income." 00:47:43.22\00:47:45.43 Not if you've already gotten into debt, it's very difficult. 00:47:45.46\00:47:49.66 But we should have, we used to save three months 00:47:49.70\00:47:53.27 set aside as an emergency fund. 00:47:53.30\00:47:55.20 Whatever your income is, if you make $3,000 a month, 00:47:55.24\00:47:58.61 you should have $9,000. 00:47:58.64\00:47:59.97 They used to say three months, now they're saying six months. 00:48:00.01\00:48:03.31 You don't know if you'll be sick 00:48:03.35\00:48:04.95 and not be able to work, 00:48:04.98\00:48:06.38 you don't know what's going to happen, 00:48:06.41\00:48:07.88 you need to have that emergency fund 00:48:07.92\00:48:10.89 so that your family will be protected. 00:48:10.92\00:48:14.46 What you need to do is create a goal 00:48:14.49\00:48:18.23 and then make a plan and work your plan. 00:48:18.26\00:48:23.16 As I said three to six months, 00:48:23.20\00:48:25.37 that's kind of setting aside for emergencies. 00:48:25.40\00:48:29.07 But if you have children, 00:48:29.10\00:48:31.57 you know, there's something 00:48:31.61\00:48:32.94 that's fascinating about interest, 00:48:32.97\00:48:36.71 interest can either be your enemy 00:48:36.75\00:48:39.55 if you're in debt because you're paying it. 00:48:39.58\00:48:41.72 But if you're saving compound interest 00:48:41.75\00:48:45.19 makes your money grow exponentially in a hurry. 00:48:45.22\00:48:49.42 There is a rule in kind of a simplified way 00:48:49.46\00:48:53.90 of telling you how to know, 00:48:53.93\00:48:56.23 how fast your money will take to double 00:48:56.26\00:48:58.27 if you are investing your money, 00:48:58.30\00:49:00.60 and they call it a rule of 72, 00:49:00.64\00:49:02.44 there's other rules, and this is close. 00:49:02.47\00:49:04.71 But it's essentially saying 00:49:04.74\00:49:06.07 what ever you would earn on an annual basis. 00:49:06.11\00:49:09.51 Let's say you find an investment 00:49:09.54\00:49:11.48 that's 10% a year, 00:49:11.51\00:49:12.98 good luck finding that but if you did, 00:49:13.01\00:49:15.62 then you divide 72 by that interest 00:49:15.65\00:49:18.89 and if you took 72 divided by 10, 00:49:18.92\00:49:21.06 what do we got, 7.2. 00:49:21.09\00:49:23.59 That means if you were investing 00:49:23.63\00:49:26.43 $10,000 or a $1,000, 00:49:26.46\00:49:28.50 let's just go with a $1,000, a $1, 000 at 10% 00:49:28.53\00:49:32.90 that will double in 7.2 years. 00:49:32.93\00:49:37.21 You would have $2,000. 00:49:37.24\00:49:38.57 So if you start early when your children are young... 00:49:38.61\00:49:42.31 Let me tell you, 00:49:42.34\00:49:43.68 they don't need all the toys that they've got, 00:49:43.71\00:49:46.45 you know, you need to teach your children 00:49:46.48\00:49:48.55 to start saving too and put toward a college fund, 00:49:48.58\00:49:52.39 and when you start when they're little, 00:49:52.42\00:49:54.06 instead of people buying them a bunch of junk 00:49:54.09\00:49:56.46 for their birthday or Christmas, 00:49:56.49\00:49:58.19 take money, if they give us money, 00:49:58.23\00:50:00.83 and you put that $50 away. 00:50:00.86\00:50:03.03 And I'm telling you, it's going to be amazing 00:50:03.06\00:50:05.23 how much money you have 00:50:05.27\00:50:06.60 when it's time to go to college. 00:50:06.63\00:50:08.07 Same thing for once you've got 00:50:08.10\00:50:09.84 that three to six months set aside 00:50:09.87\00:50:12.47 for your emergency fund. 00:50:12.51\00:50:14.01 If you continue to save 10% a year, 00:50:14.04\00:50:17.21 what you'll find is that for your retirement, 00:50:17.25\00:50:20.65 you're not going to be worried about whether or not 00:50:20.68\00:50:22.88 Social Security is still available. 00:50:22.92\00:50:26.15 I wanted to read this quote, I thought it was great. 00:50:26.19\00:50:29.22 This is from Randy Alcorn 00:50:29.26\00:50:30.99 his book Money Possessions and Eternity. 00:50:31.03\00:50:33.29 He said, 00:50:33.33\00:50:34.66 "Money needlessly spent is a double loss. 00:50:34.70\00:50:38.07 Not only is it gone, 00:50:38.10\00:50:39.43 but its potential for earnings is also gone. 00:50:39.47\00:50:43.20 Had we set it aside, 00:50:43.24\00:50:44.57 it could have been multiplying on earth 00:50:44.61\00:50:46.57 through savings or in heaven through giving... 00:50:46.61\00:50:50.41 Saving is a discipline 00:50:50.45\00:50:51.78 that develops authority over money." 00:50:51.81\00:50:54.75 It says money have authority over you 00:50:54.78\00:50:56.58 or do you have authority over your money. 00:50:56.62\00:50:59.45 You'll have authority over your money 00:50:59.49\00:51:01.09 if you learn to be disciplined enough to save. 00:51:01.12\00:51:03.83 "Instead of letting money take us 00:51:03.86\00:51:05.79 wherever our whims incline, we take control." 00:51:05.83\00:51:10.87 All right, if I were counseling, 00:51:10.90\00:51:13.13 when we counsel with young people, 00:51:13.17\00:51:15.27 I always tell a young couple before they get married. 00:51:15.30\00:51:18.31 JD and I do quite a bit of marriage counseling. 00:51:18.34\00:51:23.81 And you don't have to just be getting married 00:51:23.85\00:51:26.45 but this is great advice to begin with, 00:51:26.48\00:51:28.38 but if you're finding 00:51:28.42\00:51:29.75 that your spending is out of control, 00:51:29.78\00:51:32.15 make a budget and learn to live within that budget. 00:51:32.19\00:51:36.62 Track your spending. 00:51:36.66\00:51:37.99 See where you are, where you can make changes, 00:51:38.03\00:51:42.33 and learn to save in little ways. 00:51:42.36\00:51:45.83 One thing that JD and I, 00:51:45.87\00:51:48.27 when we married our business partner 00:51:48.30\00:51:50.04 put us $250,000 in debt. 00:51:50.07\00:51:51.41 Mercy. 00:51:51.44\00:51:52.77 So we were living off $100 a month in Dallas, Texas 00:51:52.81\00:51:56.58 for that was all I had for groceries, and toiletries, 00:51:56.61\00:52:01.15 and all of that. 00:52:01.18\00:52:02.52 I was the coupon collecting queen. 00:52:02.55\00:52:04.49 But anyway, 00:52:04.52\00:52:06.49 I had a very, very strict budget. 00:52:06.52\00:52:09.32 We did not eat out for several years 00:52:09.36\00:52:12.39 but then when we did, 00:52:12.43\00:52:13.76 it was maybe a pizza or something. 00:52:13.80\00:52:15.66 You know, we got into the habit of drinking water with lemon, 00:52:15.70\00:52:18.77 it's healthier for you. 00:52:18.80\00:52:20.24 But it just amazes me when I see people 00:52:20.27\00:52:23.04 that I know are broke will go out to eat. 00:52:23.07\00:52:26.81 And I'm not saying, we all need a treat sometimes, 00:52:26.84\00:52:29.54 but they'll order a drink that's $4, 00:52:29.58\00:52:32.15 and I'm thinking that's just a waste. 00:52:32.18\00:52:35.62 They're ordering some kind of a drink 00:52:35.65\00:52:37.29 to go with it, learn to save, 00:52:37.32\00:52:39.39 don't overbuy at the grocery store. 00:52:39.42\00:52:41.96 You know, a lot of food goes to waste. 00:52:41.99\00:52:43.93 The statistics on what America throws away is pitiful. 00:52:43.96\00:52:47.53 So don't overbuy fruits on sale, 00:52:47.56\00:52:49.50 don't overbuy it if you're not going to eat it, 00:52:49.53\00:52:51.87 or learn to freeze it and put things away. 00:52:51.90\00:52:55.24 Avoid paying interest when possible. 00:52:55.27\00:52:57.57 When I'm talking about saving, 00:52:57.61\00:52:58.97 I want to give this little bit of counsel. 00:52:59.01\00:53:01.44 If you are in debt 00:53:01.48\00:53:03.61 and you have a credit card with a high interest, 00:53:03.65\00:53:06.65 it is better to put the money once you've got 00:53:06.68\00:53:09.62 three months at least set aside, 00:53:09.65\00:53:11.15 it's better to pay off 00:53:11.19\00:53:12.52 your high interest credit card debt 00:53:12.55\00:53:14.06 than it is to put money in savings 00:53:14.09\00:53:15.82 because even though 00:53:15.86\00:53:17.19 you're putting money in savings, 00:53:17.23\00:53:19.23 it's being drained by that interest. 00:53:19.26\00:53:21.86 Don't use your credit cards, 00:53:21.90\00:53:23.33 we've already talked about for items 00:53:23.37\00:53:25.27 that you don't need because you think, 00:53:25.30\00:53:27.17 "Oh, I'm getting this on sale, I'm saving $100." 00:53:27.20\00:53:33.14 If you're paying minimum payments, 00:53:33.17\00:53:34.71 by the time that item gets paid off, 00:53:34.74\00:53:36.68 you've paid double for it. 00:53:36.71\00:53:38.05 Yes. 00:53:38.08\00:53:39.41 So let me just skip because there's. 00:53:39.45\00:53:41.82 Oh, in Proverbs 21:5, it says, 00:53:41.85\00:53:44.79 "The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, 00:53:44.82\00:53:49.06 but those of everyone who is hasty, 00:53:49.09\00:53:51.56 surely to poverty." 00:53:51.59\00:53:53.33 So you have to diligently plan 00:53:53.36\00:53:55.53 and work hard doing it as unto the Lord. 00:53:55.56\00:53:59.13 And if you're a young couple, 00:53:59.17\00:54:00.50 the other thing I would say is, do... 00:54:00.54\00:54:04.07 If you're both working and you have no children, 00:54:04.11\00:54:06.41 learn to live off one spouse's salary, 00:54:06.44\00:54:09.54 bank the entire other salary 00:54:09.58\00:54:12.25 so that you'll have a good down payment for a home. 00:54:12.28\00:54:15.08 And I do think a home is acceptable debt 00:54:15.12\00:54:17.35 but don't buy more home than you can afford. 00:54:17.39\00:54:20.32 Recently I had a young man called me, he said, 00:54:20.36\00:54:23.73 "Oh, we finally found a home." 00:54:23.76\00:54:25.73 And I said, "What percentage of that..." 00:54:25.76\00:54:28.00 The payment, what percentage? 00:54:28.03\00:54:29.60 He said, "Oh, good interest rate." 00:54:29.63\00:54:31.30 What percentage of your income is that?" 00:54:31.33\00:54:33.77 "Thirty eight percent. 00:54:33.80\00:54:35.14 Everybody's saying what a great asset this is." 00:54:35.17\00:54:38.07 And I said, "Absolutely, not. 00:54:38.11\00:54:39.94 If it's more than 25% of your income, 00:54:39.97\00:54:42.14 that's too much house for you." 00:54:42.18\00:54:43.75 And they ended up taking 00:54:43.78\00:54:45.18 that advice buying a different home 00:54:45.21\00:54:47.05 and now they're finding 00:54:47.08\00:54:48.42 that the cost of upkeep is amazing 00:54:48.45\00:54:50.72 so that was good. 00:54:50.75\00:54:53.32 I've got so much. I'm talking too much. 00:54:53.36\00:54:55.42 Managing money requires wisdom, budgeting, and discipline. 00:54:55.46\00:55:00.16 But if all we do is save for ourself, 00:55:00.20\00:55:01.96 then we're pilfering from God, 00:55:02.00\00:55:03.67 you know, we're supposed to be good stewards of our mind. 00:55:03.70\00:55:07.80 I liked what the... 00:55:07.84\00:55:09.57 The quarterly says, "When we accept Christ, 00:55:09.60\00:55:14.28 we've opened up an account." 00:55:14.31\00:55:15.68 When we're returning tithe, 00:55:15.71\00:55:17.08 we're putting that money into that account. 00:55:17.11\00:55:19.91 But we need to always keep our focus 00:55:19.95\00:55:23.95 as 2 Corinthians 4:18 says, 00:55:23.99\00:55:26.72 "While we do not look at the things which are seen, 00:55:26.76\00:55:29.16 but at the things which are not seen. 00:55:29.19\00:55:31.59 For the things that are seen are temporary, 00:55:31.63\00:55:33.90 but the things 00:55:33.93\00:55:35.26 which are not seen are eternal." 00:55:35.30\00:55:37.27 So keep your eyes focused on the Lord. 00:55:37.30\00:55:38.93 Wow. 00:55:38.97\00:55:40.30 You know, the one thing 00:55:40.34\00:55:41.67 that I've learned about this lesson 00:55:41.70\00:55:43.04 is it never gives us enough time. 00:55:43.07\00:55:44.41 Oh, no. 00:55:44.44\00:55:45.77 I like the way that all things went, 00:55:45.81\00:55:47.14 we were very scriptural, 00:55:47.18\00:55:48.51 very biblical, very practical, Shelley, 00:55:48.54\00:55:50.38 that was a financial seminar right there. 00:55:50.41\00:55:53.11 And if I could summarize what you said, 00:55:53.15\00:55:54.72 you're practical, frugal, plan, be realistic, 00:55:54.75\00:55:57.95 and just live like a person 00:55:57.99\00:55:59.39 who just wants to avoid debt, and you come out of it. 00:55:59.42\00:56:03.36 It's amazing how much we learn by our own mistakes. 00:56:03.39\00:56:06.46 I think the best counsel is an older person. 00:56:06.49\00:56:09.36 Yes. That's gone through it all. 00:56:09.40\00:56:11.23 One person even said, I was very young person 00:56:11.27\00:56:12.60 I was married, "When you get to my age, 00:56:12.63\00:56:14.34 then come back and give me counsel." 00:56:14.37\00:56:16.00 Jill, summarize what we talked about today 00:56:16.04\00:56:18.14 in your particular seminar. 00:56:18.17\00:56:19.57 Give me a few seconds here. 00:56:19.61\00:56:21.34 I think make choices by principle, 00:56:21.38\00:56:24.01 instead of choices by emotion or feeling. 00:56:24.05\00:56:26.28 Okay, Mollie? Live within your means. 00:56:26.31\00:56:28.92 If your outgo exceed your income, 00:56:28.95\00:56:30.69 your upkeep will be your downfall. 00:56:30.72\00:56:32.42 Live within your means. Yes. 00:56:32.45\00:56:34.42 That's right. Pastor Kenny? 00:56:34.46\00:56:35.79 I think we can learn to be better stewards, 00:56:35.82\00:56:37.96 specifically if we eliminate debt. 00:56:37.99\00:56:40.60 Amen. Shelley? 00:56:40.63\00:56:41.96 I would just say that when we give to the Lord 00:56:42.00\00:56:44.40 where we are... 00:56:44.43\00:56:47.60 It's something that we have a purse 00:56:47.64\00:56:49.44 that doesn't have holes in it but when we get into debt, 00:56:49.47\00:56:52.41 it's just like you've cut holes into your purse. 00:56:52.44\00:56:55.28 Wow. 00:56:55.31\00:56:56.64 I've been looking at some proverbs, 00:56:56.68\00:56:58.01 you know, Chinese proverbs, Arabian proverbs. 00:56:58.05\00:57:00.62 The one that stuck out to me was this Estonian proverb, 00:57:00.65\00:57:03.12 it says, "When death comes, the rich man has no money, 00:57:03.15\00:57:07.26 and the poor man has no debt." 00:57:07.29\00:57:10.06 You know, the Lord doesn't want us 00:57:10.09\00:57:11.43 to live like paupers, 00:57:11.46\00:57:12.79 every good and every perfect gift 00:57:12.83\00:57:14.30 God will supply all of our need, 00:57:14.33\00:57:16.43 promises to do that. 00:57:16.46\00:57:18.33 But make wise decisions about whether or not 00:57:18.37\00:57:22.64 you want to be a slave of debt or servant of God. 00:57:22.67\00:57:26.98 May the Lord bless you, until we see you again. 00:57:27.01\00:57:29.74
