Good to be here. 00:02:42.29\00:02:44.19 So what a good panel we have today 00:02:44.23\00:02:47.46 as we continue to delve into this book of Romans. 00:02:47.50\00:02:53.30 Today, we are looking at the eighth chapter of Romans. 00:02:53.37\00:02:59.07 Now last week, we looked at the seventh chapter of Romans 00:02:59.11\00:03:04.15 where Paul... 00:03:04.18\00:03:06.05 Here is something Paul says in that seventh chapter. 00:03:06.08\00:03:10.19 "O wretched man that I am." 00:03:10.22\00:03:12.59 Thank God for Romans chapter eight. 00:03:12.62\00:03:14.59 Amen. 00:03:14.62\00:03:15.96 Romans chapter eight is Paul's response 00:03:15.99\00:03:19.29 I believe to Romans Chapter seven. 00:03:19.33\00:03:22.36 So before we go into our study, we need prayer. 00:03:22.40\00:03:26.84 None of us will do anything of any value 00:03:26.90\00:03:29.60 if it is not touched and anointed by God. 00:03:29.64\00:03:33.04 Pastor Lomacang, would you pray, please. 00:03:33.07\00:03:34.88 Sure. 00:03:34.91\00:03:36.24 Our loving father, we open your Word 00:03:36.28\00:03:37.78 but we do pray that we also open our hearts. 00:03:37.81\00:03:39.78 Yes. 00:03:39.81\00:03:41.15 Connect us, Lord, with your Holy Spirit 00:03:41.18\00:03:43.45 that can work in the lives of those watching 00:03:43.49\00:03:45.49 or listening to this program. 00:03:45.52\00:03:47.56 And may these words that are words of life 00:03:47.62\00:03:50.59 find in us fertile soil. 00:03:50.63\00:03:52.83 May Jesus work in us both to will 00:03:52.86\00:03:55.36 and to do of His good pleasure. 00:03:55.40\00:03:57.63 May people recognize that Christ is being revealed 00:03:57.67\00:04:00.37 and reflected through our lives by You in dwelling power, 00:04:00.44\00:04:03.81 we pray in Christ's name. 00:04:03.84\00:04:05.37 Amen. 00:04:05.41\00:04:06.78 Amen. Amen and amen. 00:04:06.81\00:04:08.94 Memory text, let's read our memory text together. 00:04:08.98\00:04:12.88 And that is Romans 8:1. Let's read. 00:04:12.91\00:04:16.45 "There is therefore now no condemnation to those 00:04:16.48\00:04:21.46 which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, 00:04:21.49\00:04:27.00 but after the Spirit." 00:04:27.03\00:04:29.00 Oh, and don't you always want to go on to Romans 8:2? 00:04:29.03\00:04:31.77 That was our memory text, Romans 8:1. 00:04:31.80\00:04:35.44 And the Scriptures that I get to cover today, 00:04:35.47\00:04:38.54 Sunday which is in Jesus Christ is Romans 8:1 and 2. 00:04:38.57\00:04:43.71 Those are exciting texts and I love those scriptures. 00:04:43.75\00:04:46.92 And I know, I think we get redundant 00:04:46.98\00:04:49.32 in loving the scriptures 00:04:49.35\00:04:50.89 because every scripture we share, at that moment, 00:04:50.95\00:04:54.12 that is our favorite scripture, I truly believe that. 00:04:54.16\00:04:56.69 The Scripture again, "There is therefore now 00:04:59.66\00:05:03.97 no condemnation to those who are," where? 00:05:04.00\00:05:08.64 In Christ Jesus. "In Christ Jesus." 00:05:08.67\00:05:10.71 So I want to look at a couple of things. 00:05:10.74\00:05:13.07 What does condemnation mean? 00:05:13.11\00:05:16.58 There's no condemnation. What is condemnation? 00:05:16.61\00:05:21.45 That you are condemned or are being condemned. 00:05:21.48\00:05:26.25 Condemned is the sentence of the guilty, 00:05:26.29\00:05:30.33 before punishment is meted out. 00:05:30.36\00:05:32.86 Now something Pastor Lomacang shared a little earlier 00:05:32.89\00:05:36.63 and probably it's in his lesson but see, 00:05:36.67\00:05:39.73 he shared it so that makes it that I can steal it from him. 00:05:39.77\00:05:43.30 So that's we're going to do. Go ahead, go ahead. 00:05:43.37\00:05:45.01 And that would be John 3:16 and 17. 00:05:45.04\00:05:49.28 We're talking about condemnation. 00:05:49.31\00:05:50.85 What is John 3:16? 00:05:50.91\00:05:52.45 First scripture we all memorized. 00:05:52.48\00:05:54.72 "For God so loved the world that He gave 00:05:54.75\00:05:57.25 His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him 00:05:57.29\00:06:01.62 should not perish but have everlasting life." 00:06:01.66\00:06:04.89 John 3:17, "For God sent not his Son into the world 00:06:04.93\00:06:08.50 to condemn the world 00:06:08.53\00:06:10.57 but that the world through Him might be saved." 00:06:10.60\00:06:13.00 So when we say that there is therefore no... 00:06:13.03\00:06:17.74 "There is therefore now no condemnation to them 00:06:17.77\00:06:20.78 who are in Christ Jesus," 00:06:20.81\00:06:22.58 well, God sent Jesus into the world to start with 00:06:22.61\00:06:27.78 so that there wouldn't be condemnation. 00:06:27.82\00:06:29.52 Amen. Thank you, Lord. 00:06:29.55\00:06:31.75 Good point that you brought out there, Pastor Lomacang. 00:06:31.79\00:06:33.69 Could I add something to that? Yes, please do. 00:06:33.76\00:06:35.32 He didn't even come to condemn the sinner, 00:06:35.36\00:06:37.63 He came to condemn the sin. 00:06:37.66\00:06:39.76 That's the joy, that's the joy of it 00:06:39.79\00:06:41.33 because we are already condemned. 00:06:41.36\00:06:43.33 He came not to tell us what our condition is 00:06:43.37\00:06:45.93 but to rescue us from it. 00:06:45.97\00:06:47.50 So what you are saying then is that sin 00:06:47.54\00:06:50.37 is what has been sinnest 00:06:50.41\00:06:53.01 and that punishment will be meted out for that sin 00:06:53.04\00:06:57.78 to get rid of the sin that we can live pure 00:06:57.81\00:07:01.28 and holy before the Lord. 00:07:01.32\00:07:02.92 Okay. 00:07:02.95\00:07:06.65 Punishment that which is meted out to those 00:07:06.69\00:07:10.79 who don't walk in the Spirit but after the flesh. 00:07:10.86\00:07:15.83 Romans 6:23 says, 00:07:15.86\00:07:18.33 "For the wages of sin is," what? 00:07:18.37\00:07:20.84 Death. 00:07:20.87\00:07:22.20 "But the gift of God is eternal life 00:07:22.24\00:07:24.24 in Jesus Christ our Lord." 00:07:24.31\00:07:27.38 Paul uses the phrase, "In Christ Jesus" quite often. 00:07:27.41\00:07:34.02 What does it mean? 00:07:34.05\00:07:35.38 Here is a good theological question for you? 00:07:35.42\00:07:38.02 What does it mean to be in Christ Jesus? 00:07:38.05\00:07:41.36 What is it when we're in Christ Jesus? 00:07:41.39\00:07:44.06 He says, in Christ Jesus, "There is therefore now 00:07:44.13\00:07:49.63 no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus." 00:07:49.66\00:07:54.64 I don't want condemnation, so what do I want to be, 00:07:54.67\00:07:57.47 in Christ Jesus. 00:07:57.51\00:07:59.17 How do you get in Christ Jesus? 00:07:59.21\00:08:02.31 You make Jesus Christ the Lord of your life. 00:08:02.34\00:08:05.85 You see, you were wandering around in darkness, 00:08:05.88\00:08:10.42 and I want to look at this again in a minute. 00:08:10.45\00:08:13.19 You were in this world. 00:08:13.22\00:08:15.76 You were under the condemnation of sin and death. 00:08:15.79\00:08:20.63 So you were in the world and someone shared 00:08:20.66\00:08:24.10 the gospel message with you. 00:08:24.17\00:08:25.73 You heard the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ 00:08:25.77\00:08:28.90 and you accepted Him as your Lord and Savior. 00:08:28.94\00:08:32.47 You know what happened to you, you came out of the world 00:08:32.51\00:08:37.05 and you came into Christ. 00:08:37.08\00:08:39.41 You know what the church is? 00:08:39.45\00:08:41.22 If you've made Jesus Christ the Lord of your life, 00:08:41.25\00:08:43.69 are you part of the church? 00:08:43.72\00:08:45.52 And the church is the Body of Christ. 00:08:45.55\00:08:49.29 So if you are part of the Body of Christ, 00:08:49.32\00:08:51.49 then you are in Christ. 00:08:51.53\00:08:53.40 Now this finger of mine is part of my body. 00:08:53.43\00:08:58.00 I can't cut this finger off and say it's not my body. 00:08:58.03\00:09:01.37 No, I need my fingers. 00:09:01.40\00:09:02.97 So, every one of us are vitally important. 00:09:03.00\00:09:05.71 We are in Christ Jesus when we make Jesus Christ 00:09:05.74\00:09:09.81 the Lord of our lives. 00:09:09.84\00:09:13.28 That we have accepted Christ as our Savior 00:09:13.31\00:09:16.18 that we have placed our trust in Him 00:09:16.22\00:09:18.85 and his instruction for our life, 00:09:18.89\00:09:21.02 in other words, what the Bible says 00:09:21.06\00:09:23.86 as opposed to trusting in any thing 00:09:23.89\00:09:26.66 or anyone else including ourselves 00:09:26.73\00:09:29.20 which results in our personal relationship 00:09:29.23\00:09:32.63 with Jesus Christ becoming a close intimate, 00:09:32.67\00:09:37.64 in a close intimate relationship with Him. 00:09:37.67\00:09:40.58 Now, when we make Jesus Christ the Lord of our lives, 00:09:40.61\00:09:46.55 when we get transformed out of darkness and into light, 00:09:46.58\00:09:50.49 that's what Colossians says. 00:09:50.52\00:09:53.09 Then, you know, 00:09:53.12\00:09:54.46 it's not a long drawn out process, is it? 00:09:54.49\00:09:57.36 When you make Jesus Christ the Lord of your life, 00:09:57.43\00:10:00.03 it's an immediate change. 00:10:00.10\00:10:02.80 And in Christ Jesus is contrasted within the flesh. 00:10:02.83\00:10:07.97 "There is therefore now no condemnation to those 00:10:08.00\00:10:11.01 who are in Christ Jesus who are not after the flesh 00:10:11.04\00:10:15.91 but after the Spirit." 00:10:15.94\00:10:17.41 See the contrasting between the flesh and the spirit. 00:10:17.45\00:10:23.35 When you're in Christ Jesus, you aren't condemned to death. 00:10:23.39\00:10:26.45 When you're in the flesh, 00:10:26.49\00:10:28.12 you are under the penalty of death and you are condemned. 00:10:28.16\00:10:31.83 When we are born again, 00:10:31.86\00:10:34.23 or when we are born into this world 00:10:34.30\00:10:36.60 as members of a fallen human race 00:10:36.63\00:10:39.17 with no hope, we have to have hope. 00:10:39.20\00:10:43.54 Thank God. 00:10:43.57\00:10:45.04 Once we come in to this world in that fallen condition, 00:10:45.07\00:10:51.75 He has made a way. 00:10:51.78\00:10:54.15 When you're born into this world 00:10:54.18\00:10:57.12 in the fallen human race who had no hope, 00:10:57.15\00:11:00.86 God immediately made a way, 00:11:00.89\00:11:03.93 before the foundation of the world was laid 00:11:03.96\00:11:06.03 as a matter of fact, to give us hope. 00:11:06.06\00:11:08.86 We have hope because God in the form of His own Son 00:11:08.90\00:11:14.24 sent us help. 00:11:14.27\00:11:16.00 And that help is the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:11:16.04\00:11:18.27 Now I want to go on to Romans 8:2. 00:11:18.31\00:11:23.41 Romans 8:2 says, 00:11:23.45\00:11:25.55 "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus 00:11:25.58\00:11:30.55 has made me free from the law of sin and death." 00:11:30.59\00:11:33.86 Now I know that in weeks past, that Scripture has been 00:11:33.92\00:11:37.93 perfectly and thoroughly looked into. 00:11:37.96\00:11:40.86 But I love to look at it where Jesus Christ 00:11:40.90\00:11:45.87 becoming our Lord and Savior. 00:11:45.90\00:11:48.17 And we come out of darkness into light. 00:11:48.20\00:11:51.21 The law, then it says, "The law of the Spirit of life 00:11:51.24\00:11:54.31 in Christ Jesus made me free from another law." 00:11:54.34\00:11:58.08 And that was the law of sin and death. 00:11:58.11\00:12:00.12 You see, before we make Jesus Christ 00:12:00.15\00:12:02.75 the Lord of our life, we are under another law. 00:12:02.78\00:12:06.42 We are in this world, we are serving another god. 00:12:06.45\00:12:10.53 Did you know that it's called 00:12:10.56\00:12:11.89 the prince of the power of the air. 00:12:11.93\00:12:14.20 We are under another legal system. 00:12:14.30\00:12:16.97 We are in the in darkness and when we make Jesus 00:12:17.03\00:12:20.94 the Lord of our life, we come out of darkness 00:12:20.97\00:12:23.27 and we come into light. 00:12:23.30\00:12:25.51 Well, the legal system that we were in 00:12:25.54\00:12:28.81 is the law of sin and death. 00:12:28.84\00:12:31.55 But when we make Jesus Christ the Lord of our lives, 00:12:31.58\00:12:34.52 we come into the legal system of the law 00:12:34.55\00:12:38.72 of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. 00:12:38.75\00:12:41.56 Now it would be like we were a citizen, 00:12:41.59\00:12:45.73 let's say we are a citizen of a foreign country, 00:12:45.76\00:12:49.53 and in that foreign country, they have strict laws 00:12:49.56\00:12:54.40 that are in effect for all of its citizens. 00:12:54.44\00:12:57.04 And the citizens can only, let's say that they have 00:12:57.07\00:13:01.21 no freedoms whatsoever, but then, you do something. 00:13:01.24\00:13:05.45 You come from that country 00:13:05.48\00:13:07.95 and you come into the United States 00:13:07.98\00:13:10.39 and the United States accepts you 00:13:10.42\00:13:13.25 and makes you a citizen 00:13:13.29\00:13:14.69 of the United States of America. 00:13:14.72\00:13:17.03 And let's say in that other country, 00:13:17.06\00:13:18.76 you had absolutely no rights as a woman, say, 00:13:18.79\00:13:23.57 to vote or to go out in public, 00:13:23.63\00:13:26.53 but now you come into the United States. 00:13:26.57\00:13:29.60 Can you vote? Can you go out into public? 00:13:29.64\00:13:32.17 Do the laws of the country that you were in before, 00:13:32.21\00:13:35.41 does that nation's laws any longer 00:13:35.44\00:13:37.75 have any control over you? 00:13:37.78\00:13:39.68 No, they don't. 00:13:39.71\00:13:41.05 You have been transformed out of the kingdom of darkness. 00:13:41.08\00:13:44.25 You've come into the kingdom of God's Dear Son. 00:13:44.29\00:13:47.02 And now the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus 00:13:47.06\00:13:51.06 is the legal system that you're operating under. 00:13:51.09\00:13:54.30 You are no longer under the law of sin and death. 00:13:54.30\00:13:56.80 So when that law, when the law of sin and death 00:13:56.83\00:14:00.44 tries to reach over and enforce its law upon you, 00:14:00.47\00:14:04.87 you can say, "No, wait. 00:14:04.91\00:14:06.47 I am no longer a citizen of that country. 00:14:06.51\00:14:10.45 I am no longer a citizen of that kingdom. 00:14:10.48\00:14:13.52 I am now a citizen of the Kingdom of God. 00:14:13.55\00:14:16.58 The Lord Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. 00:14:16.62\00:14:19.12 God is my very own Father, I am his very own child. 00:14:19.15\00:14:22.99 The very life and nature of God flows through me 00:14:23.02\00:14:25.83 just like sap flows through a tree. 00:14:25.86\00:14:28.13 I belong to Almighty God. 00:14:28.16\00:14:31.07 Jesus is my Lord and Savior." 00:14:31.10\00:14:33.23 And the law of sin and death has no control over you. 00:14:33.30\00:14:36.77 Amen. Oh, Mollie, that was beautiful. 00:14:36.81\00:14:38.57 Thank you for setting all of this up. 00:14:38.61\00:14:39.94 You know, when we ended last week, 00:14:39.97\00:14:42.71 Paul was crying out, "Oh, wretched man that I am, 00:14:42.74\00:14:45.68 who will deliver me from this body of death?" 00:14:45.71\00:14:48.18 And then he says, "Oh, thank God, 00:14:48.22\00:14:51.29 it's through Jesus Christ." 00:14:51.32\00:14:53.36 So with conviction of sin comes hope 00:14:53.42\00:14:55.96 when you know about Jesus. 00:14:55.99\00:14:58.03 Let's look at Romans 8:3 and 4. 00:14:58.06\00:15:00.46 Just picking up where Mollie left off. 00:15:00.53\00:15:03.23 Romans 8:3 says this, "For what the law could not do, 00:15:03.26\00:15:07.64 in that it was weak through the flesh, 00:15:07.67\00:15:09.50 God did by sending his own Son 00:15:09.54\00:15:11.57 in the likeness of sinful flesh, 00:15:11.61\00:15:13.48 on account of sin, He condemned sin in the flesh 00:15:13.51\00:15:18.11 that the righteousness requirement of the law 00:15:18.15\00:15:20.22 might be fulfilled in us, 00:15:20.25\00:15:22.08 who do not walk according to the law," 00:15:22.12\00:15:24.49 excuse me, "according to the flesh, 00:15:24.52\00:15:26.05 but according to the Spirit." 00:15:26.09\00:15:27.56 So let's unpack that. 00:15:27.59\00:15:28.99 Verse 3, "For what the law could not do, 00:15:29.02\00:15:31.86 in that it was weak through the flesh." 00:15:31.89\00:15:35.36 The Mosaic Law was good, it was perfect, it was holy, 00:15:35.40\00:15:39.47 but the problem was 00:15:39.50\00:15:40.84 it was given to an imperfect people. 00:15:40.90\00:15:44.17 A perfect set of requirements was given 00:15:44.21\00:15:46.44 to an imperfect people who could not fulfill that 00:15:46.47\00:15:51.15 in the weakness of their flesh. 00:15:51.18\00:15:53.68 And the law couldn't bestow power over sin. 00:15:53.72\00:15:56.95 It could not justify them. 00:15:56.99\00:15:59.39 It was weak because 00:15:59.42\00:16:01.92 without the impartation of the Holy Spirit, 00:16:01.96\00:16:05.29 the flesh is too weak to live by the laws' tenants. 00:16:05.33\00:16:09.56 So what the law was given was to show our need of grace. 00:16:09.60\00:16:14.17 And when it was given, God gave the remedy. 00:16:14.24\00:16:16.94 He gave the grace in the sanctuary, 00:16:17.01\00:16:20.68 in the temple services. 00:16:20.71\00:16:22.38 So right from the beginning, it was by grace 00:16:22.41\00:16:26.28 but now there is something that's going to be so different 00:16:26.31\00:16:29.48 because when Christ came, then after He returned, 00:16:29.52\00:16:33.66 He sent the Spirit. 00:16:33.69\00:16:35.36 So continuing in verse 3, he said, 00:16:35.39\00:16:38.83 "What the law could not do, 00:16:38.86\00:16:40.20 in that it was weak through the flesh, 00:16:40.23\00:16:41.73 God did by sending his own Son 00:16:41.76\00:16:45.40 in the likeness of sinful flesh on account of sin." 00:16:45.43\00:16:51.31 Jesus had to come in our likeness. 00:16:51.34\00:16:54.78 He had to become one of us to be our substitute. 00:16:54.81\00:16:59.18 In Philippians 2:6, it says that He made himself 00:16:59.21\00:17:02.38 of no reputation but He took on the nature of a servant 00:17:02.42\00:17:07.42 being made in human likeness. 00:17:07.49\00:17:10.86 And there's a great mystery there 00:17:10.89\00:17:13.66 to think about someone who is perfectly divine 00:17:13.73\00:17:17.60 and yet, all so perfectly sin... 00:17:17.63\00:17:22.17 perfectly human. 00:17:22.20\00:17:24.77 Now I want to point out something. 00:17:24.81\00:17:27.91 Christ, when He became like us, Hebrews 2:14, it says, 00:17:27.94\00:17:33.42 "Since the children are shares in flesh and blood, 00:17:33.45\00:17:36.62 He in like manner partaken the same." 00:17:36.69\00:17:39.79 And Hebrews 2:17, it says "It behooved Him in all ways 00:17:39.82\00:17:44.33 to be made like his brethren." 00:17:44.36\00:17:46.46 Hebrews 4:15 says He was tempted in all ways 00:17:46.49\00:17:51.70 as we are tempted. 00:17:51.73\00:17:53.07 So divinity did not enable him not to sin, 00:17:53.10\00:17:58.71 it did not render Him incapable of sin 00:17:58.74\00:18:03.18 because when He was here, He emptied Himself 00:18:03.21\00:18:07.68 and He relied purely on the power of the Father 00:18:07.72\00:18:11.69 and the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:18:11.72\00:18:13.39 So He came in the likeness of sinful flesh. 00:18:13.42\00:18:18.39 He wasn't Himself sin or sinful because it says that 00:18:18.43\00:18:24.70 He knew no sin 00:18:24.73\00:18:26.63 but He came on account of sin to be our offering. 00:18:26.67\00:18:30.71 Now in verse 3, continues, 00:18:30.74\00:18:32.94 "He condemned sin in the flesh." 00:18:32.97\00:18:37.65 There's a parallel between Christ's incarnation 00:18:37.68\00:18:42.25 and his sacrifice on the cross. 00:18:42.28\00:18:46.65 In the Old Testament sacrificial system, 00:18:46.69\00:18:49.29 everything about the Old Testament 00:18:49.32\00:18:50.83 sacrificial system pointed to Jesus. 00:18:50.86\00:18:54.20 But it also demonstrated God's... how God... 00:18:54.20\00:18:58.60 with what seriousness God looked upon man's sin 00:18:58.63\00:19:03.07 because what was required for the remission of sin? 00:19:03.10\00:19:06.21 Shedding of blood. 00:19:06.24\00:19:07.61 The shedding of blood was required. 00:19:07.64\00:19:09.64 And then, Jesus sent his own Son 00:19:09.68\00:19:13.35 to become one of us so that He could stand in 00:19:13.38\00:19:16.92 as our substitute and make the sacrifice. 00:19:16.95\00:19:19.92 So God demonstrated His condemnation of sin 00:19:19.95\00:19:24.36 when He sent His son to die for us. 00:19:24.39\00:19:27.03 Man's sin was condemned in Christ's flesh. 00:19:27.03\00:19:32.00 He perfectly kept the law, then He paid our penalty 00:19:32.03\00:19:36.71 by sacrificing Himself for us. 00:19:36.74\00:19:39.37 You know, when you think about it, 00:19:39.41\00:19:41.54 Christ achieved perfection as a man, did He not? 00:19:41.58\00:19:44.58 Relying on the power of whom? 00:19:44.61\00:19:46.61 God the Father. Of the Father, the Holy Spirit. 00:19:46.65\00:19:49.95 And His perfection, He obeyed all of God's Commandments, 00:19:49.98\00:19:55.26 His every word. 00:19:55.29\00:19:56.83 And Christ's faith, His love of the Father, 00:19:56.86\00:20:00.10 His obedience was perfect. 00:20:00.13\00:20:02.40 And now, that perfection is credited to us 00:20:02.43\00:20:08.24 when we accept Christ. 00:20:08.27\00:20:09.74 That's what Paul is talking about salvation by faith alone 00:20:09.77\00:20:13.34 that this is imputed or credited to us 00:20:13.38\00:20:17.51 when we accept Christ. 00:20:17.55\00:20:20.32 And he goes on to say... 00:20:20.38\00:20:25.22 When he's talking about He condemned sin in the flesh, 00:20:25.25\00:20:29.16 He did not condemn man, 00:20:29.19\00:20:34.13 the Law of Moses condemns sinful man. 00:20:34.20\00:20:38.37 He condemned sin by stripping sin of its power 00:20:38.40\00:20:43.87 to hold us captive. 00:20:43.94\00:20:45.81 And sin's condemnation was condemned if you will. 00:20:45.84\00:20:50.28 So He bore the burden of our sin and we were spared. 00:20:50.31\00:20:56.45 So he goes on in verse 4 saying this, 00:20:56.48\00:20:59.59 "That the righteous requirement of the law..." 00:20:59.62\00:21:02.59 Let me go back and read that fully 00:21:02.62\00:21:04.76 so that we're getting there. 00:21:04.79\00:21:06.13 "For what the law could not do, 00:21:06.16\00:21:07.50 in that it was weak through the flesh, 00:21:07.50\00:21:08.83 God did by sending His own son 00:21:08.86\00:21:10.23 in the likeness of sinful flesh, 00:21:10.27\00:21:13.17 on account of sin, 00:21:13.20\00:21:14.67 He condemned sin and flesh that the righteous requirement 00:21:14.70\00:21:19.77 of the law might be fulfilled in us 00:21:19.81\00:21:23.21 who do not walk according to the flesh 00:21:23.24\00:21:26.78 but according to the Spirit." 00:21:26.82\00:21:30.29 Remember, we talked about before. 00:21:30.35\00:21:33.52 There is positional sanctification, 00:21:33.56\00:21:36.39 that's when we are in Christ. 00:21:36.42\00:21:37.99 We are sanctified. 00:21:38.03\00:21:39.69 We are set apart for God's purpose. 00:21:39.73\00:21:41.80 But then, there is practical sanctification 00:21:41.83\00:21:45.23 as we walk in God's will. 00:21:45.27\00:21:48.47 And we see a parallel to Romans 8:4 00:21:48.50\00:21:51.44 in Ephesians 2:8 through 10 when he says, 00:21:51.47\00:21:54.21 "By grace, you've been saved through faith." 00:21:54.24\00:21:56.54 And then he said, you know, not by works 00:21:56.58\00:21:58.11 that you should boast but what does he go on to say, 00:21:58.15\00:22:00.45 "That you've been saved by faith to do good works 00:22:00.52\00:22:04.19 which God prepared in advance for you to do." 00:22:04.22\00:22:07.19 So here Paul is saying that He condemns sin 00:22:07.26\00:22:11.66 that the righteous requirement of the law 00:22:11.69\00:22:15.13 might be fulfilled in us. 00:22:15.16\00:22:17.97 So this shows that God's purpose 00:22:18.00\00:22:20.44 in reference to His commandments, 00:22:20.50\00:22:23.91 God has never diminished or changed that. 00:22:23.97\00:22:28.44 He expects the righteous requirement of the law 00:22:28.48\00:22:31.71 to be fulfilled in us. 00:22:31.75\00:22:33.08 In fact, that's the great purpose 00:22:33.11\00:22:34.62 of the redemptive act 00:22:34.65\00:22:35.98 that as we are filled with the spirit, 00:22:36.02\00:22:39.69 we are declared innocent, filled with the spirit 00:22:39.72\00:22:43.22 that we are given the power by the Holy Spirit 00:22:43.26\00:22:47.46 to walk in the law of God and fulfill that law. 00:22:47.50\00:22:51.47 You know, the Holy Spirit is mentioned 19 times 00:22:51.50\00:22:54.37 in Romans chapter eight. 00:22:54.40\00:22:56.40 And so that gives us, shows us the power 00:22:56.44\00:22:59.54 when sin or when self is dethroned, 00:22:59.57\00:23:03.18 and Christ is placed on the throne, 00:23:03.21\00:23:05.51 where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 00:23:05.55\00:23:08.48 So it is when he says that the righteous requirement 00:23:08.52\00:23:11.59 of the law might be fulfilled in us, 00:23:11.62\00:23:13.56 it is God who is working in us 00:23:13.59\00:23:15.29 to willing to do His good pleasure. 00:23:15.32\00:23:17.16 It is God who will fulfill in us 00:23:17.23\00:23:22.10 His righteous requirements of the law, 00:23:22.13\00:23:25.97 if we continue so on, 00:23:26.00\00:23:28.00 to those who do not walk according to the flesh 00:23:28.04\00:23:31.81 but according to this spirit. 00:23:31.84\00:23:34.48 You know, when we have been made 00:23:34.51\00:23:40.58 righteous by accepting Christ, then what happens is God puts, 00:23:40.62\00:23:46.25 gives us a new heart. 00:23:46.29\00:23:47.86 He empowers us to keep those new covenant commandments 00:23:47.89\00:23:54.03 as he says in Hebrews 8:8 through 10 00:23:54.10\00:23:57.30 that his law of love, 00:23:57.33\00:23:59.13 this wonderful law, he says, I will... 00:23:59.17\00:24:02.87 This is the new covenant. 00:24:02.90\00:24:04.54 It's not just going to be written on stone, 00:24:04.57\00:24:07.48 I'm also going to now write it on your heart, on your mind, 00:24:07.51\00:24:12.05 and put them in your heart 00:24:12.08\00:24:13.92 so that you can walk in obedience. 00:24:13.95\00:24:17.19 So he frees us from sin and death so that we may, 00:24:17.22\00:24:22.49 as we walk according to the spirit, 00:24:22.52\00:24:24.96 that we may fulfill the righteous requirement 00:24:24.99\00:24:28.46 of His law. 00:24:28.50\00:24:29.83 Amen. Amen. 00:24:29.86\00:24:31.20 Good. Wow, Shelley, that's powerful. 00:24:31.23\00:24:32.83 I'm just swimming here. 00:24:32.87\00:24:34.50 This book is deeper than I thought it was. 00:24:34.54\00:24:36.57 I need to get a new tank or refill tank. 00:24:36.60\00:24:40.64 I thank you so much. 00:24:40.68\00:24:42.01 And the Apostle Paul in his writings 00:24:42.04\00:24:43.81 is just so clear. 00:24:43.85\00:24:46.55 We just have to allow the Spirit of God 00:24:46.58\00:24:48.25 to make it clear to us. 00:24:48.28\00:24:49.62 Couple of things I want to set in place as I go down, 00:24:49.65\00:24:51.75 as I go not to the flesh or the spirit. 00:24:51.79\00:24:55.16 I want to tap on a few things 00:24:55.19\00:24:57.19 that were in one of our past lessons 00:24:57.23\00:24:59.13 and I think we may have alluded to that today. 00:24:59.16\00:25:01.53 But when Paul pointed out that 00:25:01.56\00:25:03.67 when he became aware of the sin, 00:25:03.70\00:25:05.10 sin revived and he died. 00:25:05.13\00:25:07.07 I wanted to really make it clear 00:25:07.14\00:25:08.54 that the law exposed Paul's condition 00:25:08.57\00:25:12.61 like the mirror exposes our condition. 00:25:12.64\00:25:15.28 Yes. 00:25:15.31\00:25:16.64 So without the mirror, Paul didn't understand 00:25:16.68\00:25:18.38 his condition but when the mirror, 00:25:18.41\00:25:20.35 which is the law of God according to James, 00:25:20.42\00:25:22.68 when we look into that perfect law of liberty 00:25:22.72\00:25:25.12 like a mirror and see our condition, 00:25:25.15\00:25:26.86 then all of a sudden, the mirror is not the problem, 00:25:26.89\00:25:30.23 we are the problem. 00:25:30.26\00:25:31.59 We are carnal, sold under sin. 00:25:31.63\00:25:34.00 The mirror, and so I want to make it clear, 00:25:34.00\00:25:35.60 the law of God is not the issue here, 00:25:35.63\00:25:37.70 the commandments of God is not the problem. 00:25:37.73\00:25:40.10 So often we think if we can get rid 00:25:40.14\00:25:41.47 of the commandments of God, then the remedy, our situation, 00:25:41.50\00:25:45.27 you can no more get rid of the commandments of God 00:25:45.31\00:25:48.18 to remedy your situation 00:25:48.21\00:25:49.54 than getting rid of the mirror cleans you up. 00:25:49.58\00:25:51.81 That's right. 00:25:51.85\00:25:53.18 So the law of God is very necessary. 00:25:53.21\00:25:54.88 It shows us where our need is. 00:25:54.92\00:25:56.99 Another thing is, when Paul says, 00:25:57.05\00:25:59.35 "Sin revived and I died," I want to make it clear, 00:25:59.39\00:26:01.49 the law did not die, Paul died. 00:26:01.52\00:26:04.83 That's something that's very important 00:26:04.86\00:26:06.19 to understand. 00:26:06.23\00:26:07.56 But now we go to Romans 8:2, 00:26:07.60\00:26:08.93 and we're going to go down to 5. 00:26:08.96\00:26:10.30 When the Bible says, 00:26:10.37\00:26:12.00 "For the law of the Spirit of life 00:26:12.03\00:26:13.64 in Christ Jesus," and you know what's amazing about this, 00:26:13.67\00:26:15.47 Mollie talked about it, Shelley talked about it. 00:26:15.50\00:26:16.84 I know, Jill's going to talk about it 00:26:16.91\00:26:18.24 and Pastor CA is going to talk about it. 00:26:18.27\00:26:19.61 We're going to all be talking about the same thing. 00:26:19.64\00:26:21.74 We're going to be stepping over each other's notes 00:26:21.78\00:26:23.85 because you cannot separate the whole context 00:26:23.88\00:26:26.58 from its tentacles. 00:26:26.61\00:26:28.35 You know, we talk about different aspects of it 00:26:28.38\00:26:30.09 but the law of the Spirit of life 00:26:30.12\00:26:32.99 in Christ Jesus has made me free 00:26:33.02\00:26:34.62 from the law of sin and death. 00:26:34.66\00:26:35.99 Now let me make a statement 00:26:36.02\00:26:37.36 that I'm going to qualify in a moment. 00:26:37.43\00:26:40.10 The law of the spirit of life is not the Ten Commandments. 00:26:40.13\00:26:44.83 The law of the spirit of life is not the Ten Commandments. 00:26:44.87\00:26:48.04 The Ten Commandments shows our condemned condition 00:26:48.07\00:26:51.07 but the Ten Commandments cannot free us. 00:26:51.11\00:26:53.34 That's correct. 00:26:53.38\00:26:54.88 It shows us our condition but it cannot clean it up. 00:26:54.91\00:26:58.38 In the same way, the mirror shows us 00:26:58.41\00:27:00.25 we have issues but the mirror 00:27:00.28\00:27:02.02 cannot straighten our issues out. 00:27:02.05\00:27:03.95 So when the Bible says the law of the spirit of life, 00:27:04.02\00:27:06.12 it is not the Ten Commandments. 00:27:06.15\00:27:07.76 I would submit to you that the law of the spirit of life, 00:27:07.79\00:27:10.46 it is the power over sin that brings us into harmony 00:27:10.49\00:27:16.33 with the Ten Commandments of God. 00:27:16.36\00:27:17.70 Amen. 00:27:17.73\00:27:19.07 Let me give you a couple of examples. 00:27:19.10\00:27:20.44 When the Bible says the law of the spirit of life, 00:27:20.47\00:27:21.80 it is also not the Holy Spirit that's talked about here. 00:27:21.84\00:27:25.57 It's the law of the spirit of life. 00:27:25.61\00:27:28.31 Let's look at the couple of examples 00:27:28.34\00:27:29.68 to see what that law of the spirit of life is. 00:27:29.71\00:27:31.75 As I looked at the Logos, 00:27:31.78\00:27:33.72 I have a number of commentaries. 00:27:33.75\00:27:36.08 And I walk through this. 00:27:36.12\00:27:37.52 And the expositive of theologians and logos 00:27:37.59\00:27:40.89 had all concurred that the law of the spirit of life 00:27:40.96\00:27:46.43 is not talking about the Holy Spirit. 00:27:46.46\00:27:48.83 It's the law of the spirit of life. 00:27:48.86\00:27:51.10 Now here's the point. 00:27:51.13\00:27:52.90 If the Holy Spirit was the one, this is the power, 00:27:52.93\00:27:56.00 if the Holy Spirit is the one to make us righteous, 00:27:56.04\00:27:58.57 then Jesus is not necessary. 00:27:58.61\00:28:02.84 So where does this power come from? 00:28:02.88\00:28:04.85 The Holy Spirit communicates it. 00:28:04.88\00:28:07.18 But if you remember John 16, He says, 00:28:07.25\00:28:09.58 I'll communicate to you whatever I receive. 00:28:09.62\00:28:13.39 I don't even speak on my own authority. 00:28:13.42\00:28:15.26 Whatever I hear, 00:28:15.29\00:28:16.62 that's what I'm going to convey. 00:28:16.66\00:28:18.59 Look at a couple of passages. 00:28:18.63\00:28:19.96 Ephesians 3:20 to talk about the law of the Spirit of Life, 00:28:20.03\00:28:24.07 where does it come from? 00:28:24.10\00:28:25.67 Well, we know, Ephesians 3:20, the Bible says, 00:28:25.70\00:28:29.04 "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly, 00:28:29.07\00:28:31.97 abundantly above all that we ask or think 00:28:32.01\00:28:35.48 according to the power that works in us." 00:28:35.51\00:28:40.65 Where does this power come from? 00:28:40.72\00:28:42.52 It comes from Christ. Amen. 00:28:42.55\00:28:45.25 But it resides in us through His Holy Spirit. 00:28:45.29\00:28:48.02 Let's look at John 1:12. 00:28:48.06\00:28:50.46 When we receive Christ, the power is in Christ. 00:28:50.53\00:28:55.90 Remember, when he was raised, He said, 00:28:55.93\00:28:58.40 "All power is given unto to me." 00:28:58.43\00:29:01.00 He didn't say all power is given unto the Holy Spirit. 00:29:01.04\00:29:03.94 He gave the Holy Spirit the power 00:29:03.97\00:29:05.84 that the Holy Spirit conveyed to us 00:29:05.87\00:29:07.41 on the day of Pentecost but you shall receive power 00:29:07.44\00:29:10.71 but the Holy Spirit, the power did not reside 00:29:10.78\00:29:12.91 in the Holy Spirit, it resided in Christ. 00:29:12.95\00:29:15.78 He received it from Christ and conveyed it to us. 00:29:15.82\00:29:18.39 Here is the evidence of that. John 1:12. 00:29:18.42\00:29:22.29 "But as many as received Him," remember He said to the Jews, 00:29:22.32\00:29:25.09 "I came to my own and they did not," what? 00:29:25.13\00:29:26.83 Receive me. 00:29:26.86\00:29:28.16 They didn't receive me, so they had no power. 00:29:28.20\00:29:29.73 They had the law but they had no power. 00:29:29.76\00:29:32.47 But He said, "But as many as received Him," 00:29:32.50\00:29:35.94 John 1:12, "To them gave He power," 00:29:35.97\00:29:40.18 I'm reading in the King James Version. 00:29:40.21\00:29:41.78 "To become the sons of God, 00:29:41.81\00:29:44.05 even to them that believe on His name." 00:29:44.08\00:29:47.42 Now this is powerful. They became the sons of God. 00:29:47.45\00:29:50.59 I was thinking of this 00:29:50.62\00:29:51.95 and I had my devotion this morning 00:29:51.99\00:29:53.32 and I like Oswald Chambers. 00:29:53.36\00:29:55.36 He talked about, he says, "When you have a father 00:29:55.39\00:29:58.19 and child relationship, 00:29:58.23\00:30:00.60 you know your father loves you." 00:30:00.63\00:30:02.86 You don't have a master slave relationship 00:30:02.90\00:30:05.00 because you are now in subjection to somebody 00:30:05.03\00:30:08.14 who is controlling you that you don't to be controlled by. 00:30:08.17\00:30:10.47 But when you know what we are, daughters and sons of God, 00:30:10.51\00:30:13.44 you have a father child relationship, 00:30:13.48\00:30:16.75 and you know the father wants nothing 00:30:16.81\00:30:18.68 but the best for his children. 00:30:18.71\00:30:20.88 So therefore, it's not a relationship of timidity 00:30:20.92\00:30:24.55 but a relationship of mutual admiration. 00:30:24.59\00:30:30.09 He loves me, I love him. 00:30:30.13\00:30:32.03 He brought me into the relationship with him. 00:30:32.06\00:30:35.26 I didn't bring my Father into being, 00:30:35.30\00:30:37.43 my Father brought me into being. 00:30:37.50\00:30:39.57 He goes on further, 00:30:39.60\00:30:40.94 Romans 1:16, talking about this power. 00:30:40.97\00:30:43.74 The power that is at work in us is the power of Christ. 00:30:43.77\00:30:47.58 Romans 1:16, "For I am not ashamed 00:30:47.61\00:30:49.54 of the gospel of Christ," 00:30:49.58\00:30:51.75 not the gospel of the Holy Spirit. 00:30:51.78\00:30:53.75 "For it is the power of God to salvation for everyone 00:30:53.78\00:30:56.32 who believes for the Jew first and also for the Greek." 00:30:56.35\00:31:00.16 What role does the Holy Spirit play? 00:31:00.19\00:31:02.99 He is the active agent in us 00:31:03.02\00:31:04.79 that the Lord left to continue working. 00:31:04.83\00:31:06.70 I'm leaving, He's coming and when He comes, 00:31:06.73\00:31:10.73 He will abide with you forever. 00:31:10.77\00:31:12.67 So the Holy Spirit is carrying on the work that Christ began. 00:31:12.70\00:31:16.44 Amen. 00:31:16.47\00:31:17.81 Another passage, 1 Corinthians 1:18. 00:31:17.84\00:31:21.08 "For the message of the cross 00:31:21.11\00:31:22.51 is foolishness to those who are perishing 00:31:22.54\00:31:25.38 but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." 00:31:25.41\00:31:30.45 Well, who is the power of God? 00:31:30.49\00:31:32.25 Jesus who says, "All power is given to me." 00:31:32.29\00:31:36.26 Now let's go ahead 00:31:36.29\00:31:37.63 and I'm going to share this quotation 00:31:37.66\00:31:38.99 from Education 289 and paragraph one, 00:31:39.03\00:31:44.10 speaking about how do we embrace this power 00:31:44.13\00:31:47.67 by leaning our willing to His. 00:31:47.70\00:31:49.37 "The will is the governing power 00:31:49.40\00:31:51.21 in the nature of man. 00:31:51.24\00:31:52.77 The power of decision or choice." 00:31:52.81\00:31:55.58 We've got to exercise this power daily. 00:31:55.61\00:31:58.35 "Every human being possessed of reason 00:31:58.38\00:32:01.35 has power to choose the right." 00:32:01.38\00:32:04.12 That's the power He gave us. 00:32:04.19\00:32:05.82 "In every experience of life God's Word to us 00:32:05.85\00:32:08.86 is choose you this day whom you will serve. 00:32:08.89\00:32:12.63 Everyone may place 00:32:12.66\00:32:14.20 his will on the side of the will of God, 00:32:14.20\00:32:17.03 every one may place his will on the side of the will of God 00:32:17.07\00:32:20.50 may choose to obey Him 00:32:20.54\00:32:21.90 and by thus linking himself with divine agencies." 00:32:21.94\00:32:27.34 I love this part. 00:32:27.38\00:32:28.71 This is the power, 00:32:28.74\00:32:30.11 this is the extent of the power. 00:32:30.15\00:32:31.48 "He may stand where nothing can force Him to do evil." 00:32:31.51\00:32:34.78 Praise God. Amen. Amen. 00:32:34.82\00:32:36.35 Which takes me to my passage for my lesson, 00:32:36.38\00:32:38.22 I'll use this for the next two minutes. 00:32:38.25\00:32:41.06 So where nothing can force us to do evil. 00:32:41.09\00:32:43.89 That's Romans 8:5-6. 00:32:43.93\00:32:46.33 "For those who live according to the flesh, 00:32:46.36\00:32:48.23 set their minds on the things of the flesh. 00:32:48.26\00:32:50.40 For those who live according to the spirit, 00:32:50.43\00:32:52.13 the things of the Spirit 00:32:52.17\00:32:54.00 for to be carnally minded is..." 00:32:54.07\00:32:55.40 Death. 00:32:55.44\00:32:56.77 "Death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." 00:32:56.81\00:33:00.18 So the focus of the mind 00:33:00.21\00:33:02.84 becomes the controlling factor of the life. 00:33:02.88\00:33:05.61 Sin is first born in the mind 00:33:05.65\00:33:07.65 before it is carried out in the life. 00:33:07.68\00:33:09.02 True. 00:33:09.05\00:33:10.39 So whatever you focus your mind on will determine your action, 00:33:10.42\00:33:13.15 your action determines your habit, 00:33:13.19\00:33:14.69 your habit determines your character, 00:33:14.72\00:33:16.26 your character determines your destiny. 00:33:16.29\00:33:18.23 In James 1:14-15 makes it very clear. 00:33:18.26\00:33:21.06 The mind is the place where it all starts. 00:33:21.10\00:33:23.43 Amen. 00:33:23.47\00:33:25.00 But when that spark happens, 00:33:25.03\00:33:26.50 you have to determine to embrace it or to reject it. 00:33:26.53\00:33:29.87 In James, makes it clear, James 1:14-15. 00:33:29.90\00:33:32.91 "But each one is tempted when he is drawn away 00:33:32.94\00:33:35.28 by his own desires and into highest." 00:33:35.31\00:33:38.45 When you embrace it, then when desire has conceived, 00:33:38.48\00:33:42.28 see the sin again, see the seed again. 00:33:42.32\00:33:45.12 "When desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin 00:33:45.15\00:33:48.39 and sin when it is full grown brings forth death." 00:33:48.42\00:33:51.26 In the very same way 00:33:51.29\00:33:52.89 when we embrace the seed of Christ, 00:33:52.93\00:33:56.26 when that sin conceives it brings forth righteousness. 00:33:56.30\00:34:00.04 Amen. 00:34:00.07\00:34:01.40 And when it is full grown, 00:34:01.44\00:34:02.77 it brings forth the character of Christ. 00:34:02.80\00:34:05.87 So we have to make sure that the carnal mind 00:34:05.91\00:34:08.81 is not the place that the mind 00:34:08.84\00:34:12.78 does not become carnal by the focus 00:34:12.81\00:34:15.78 that we maintain. 00:34:15.82\00:34:17.29 You can look to the corner and look at those things 00:34:17.32\00:34:20.26 that chickens eat or you can be an eagle 00:34:20.29\00:34:22.89 and look up to the heavens and realize, 00:34:22.92\00:34:25.23 and I said this before 00:34:25.26\00:34:26.59 and I want to use the parody here, 00:34:26.63\00:34:28.80 you've never heard the phrase, "Kentucky Fried Eagle." 00:34:28.83\00:34:32.63 You've always heard, "Kentucky Fried Chicken." 00:34:32.67\00:34:35.24 See we can be Eagles in Christ by the things we focus on 00:34:35.27\00:34:38.81 and by the power that we embrace. 00:34:38.84\00:34:40.94 And through His nature, 00:34:40.98\00:34:42.38 we will rise to higher heights in righteousness. 00:34:42.41\00:34:44.91 Amen. Thank you so much, Pastor John. 00:34:44.95\00:34:47.48 What an incredible lesson. Praise the Lord. 00:34:47.52\00:34:49.45 I am so blessed getting into the Word of God and learning. 00:34:49.48\00:34:52.75 And as you mentioned, we're all sharing 00:34:52.79\00:34:54.72 some of the same scriptures, some of the same things, 00:34:54.76\00:34:57.69 but that's a wonderful thing because we want to learn, 00:34:57.73\00:35:00.96 we want to grow, 00:35:00.96\00:35:02.53 we want to be born again with the Word of God 00:35:02.56\00:35:05.50 that incorruptible seed and have that seed spring up 00:35:05.53\00:35:08.57 and bear fruit in our hearts and lives. 00:35:08.60\00:35:11.17 I have Wednesday. 00:35:11.21\00:35:13.31 Wednesday is, 00:35:13.38\00:35:15.74 what is my lesson, Christ in you. 00:35:15.78\00:35:18.05 So we're going to look at Romans 8 00:35:18.08\00:35:20.02 and our verses are 9-14. 00:35:20.05\00:35:24.09 Romans 8:9-14. 00:35:24.12\00:35:26.76 Before we begin, I just want to mention 00:35:26.79\00:35:28.92 and this is already been mentioned by 00:35:28.96\00:35:30.56 I think everyone here on the panel, 00:35:30.63\00:35:32.86 that we have two choices in life. 00:35:32.89\00:35:35.26 We can choose to live for Christ 00:35:35.30\00:35:37.73 or we can make a choice to live for the enemy. 00:35:37.77\00:35:41.14 We can choose to live and walk 00:35:41.17\00:35:43.27 according to the spirit, 00:35:43.30\00:35:45.34 walk in dependence on the Spirit, 00:35:45.37\00:35:47.48 have Christ in us, the hope of glory, 00:35:47.54\00:35:50.41 died a self in sin and live to Christ. 00:35:50.45\00:35:53.58 Or we can choose to live and walk 00:35:53.62\00:35:56.08 according to the flesh, walk in dependence on myself, 00:35:56.12\00:36:00.19 walk into that bondage and that addiction. 00:36:00.22\00:36:03.76 So we really have two choices. 00:36:03.79\00:36:05.73 There is no middle ground as it were. 00:36:05.76\00:36:08.63 You could wake up Pastor CA and say, 00:36:08.66\00:36:10.27 "Well, today I think I'm just going to serve Jill." 00:36:10.30\00:36:13.57 Well, if I make a choice, I'm just serving Jill, 00:36:13.64\00:36:16.40 I've already made a choice to serve the enemy. 00:36:16.44\00:36:19.34 There is no middle ground. 00:36:19.37\00:36:21.24 I can't say, I'm just doing my own thing 00:36:21.28\00:36:23.45 because my own thing, the carnal nature, 00:36:23.48\00:36:26.45 the carnal mind is automatically gonna go 00:36:26.48\00:36:28.65 on the ground of the enemy. 00:36:28.68\00:36:30.02 That's right. Mark 3:25. 00:36:30.09\00:36:33.46 "A house divided against itself cannot stand." 00:36:33.49\00:36:37.46 So I don't know, before we jump into our Romans 8:9, 00:36:37.53\00:36:41.50 I don't know where you are in your walk with God, 00:36:41.53\00:36:43.73 you might be saying, 00:36:43.77\00:36:45.10 "I'm not sure, I got one foot in the church 00:36:45.13\00:36:47.20 and one foot in the world. 00:36:47.24\00:36:48.74 I have one foot sort of want to follow Jesus 00:36:48.77\00:36:51.34 when it works with me. 00:36:51.37\00:36:53.64 But when it doesn't, I think I'll do my own thing." 00:36:53.68\00:36:57.31 There is no neutrality in this battle, 00:36:57.35\00:36:59.91 this great controversy that we are engaged in. 00:37:00.05\00:37:02.75 We will have to make a choice. 00:37:02.78\00:37:04.49 And whether we make that choice today or tomorrow, 00:37:04.52\00:37:07.49 make a choice today. 00:37:07.52\00:37:09.79 While you hear the spirits call on your heart, 00:37:09.82\00:37:13.29 don't harden your heart 00:37:13.33\00:37:15.43 but make a choice to serve the Lord Jesus. 00:37:15.46\00:37:17.37 So let's look at this contrast being in Christ. 00:37:17.40\00:37:20.24 Romans 8:9. 00:37:20.27\00:37:21.94 "But you are not in the flesh but in the spirit. 00:37:21.97\00:37:25.74 If indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you," 00:37:25.77\00:37:28.44 I want to take a moment and just look at the word 00:37:28.48\00:37:30.25 "Dwells". 00:37:30.28\00:37:31.75 It's oikeo in the Greek, 00:37:31.78\00:37:34.55 and that's used a couple times here 00:37:34.58\00:37:36.25 in Romans and it's interesting. 00:37:36.28\00:37:38.15 It can indicate the Spirit of God dwelling in us 00:37:38.19\00:37:40.46 or it could be the enemy dwelling in us. 00:37:40.49\00:37:42.56 Oikeo simply means to inhabit, to dwell, 00:37:42.59\00:37:46.36 in dwell to make a home or to be at home. 00:37:46.39\00:37:50.43 So here that if the Spirit of God 00:37:50.47\00:37:52.27 dwells in me, that means He's taken up residence. 00:37:52.30\00:37:55.40 He is living inside of me. 00:37:55.44\00:37:58.67 To contrast that, we could look at Romans 7:20. 00:37:58.71\00:38:01.98 This word oikeo was used again but not in the same fashion. 00:38:02.01\00:38:05.65 "Now if I do what I will not to do, 00:38:05.68\00:38:08.12 it is no longer I who do it but the sin that dwells in me." 00:38:08.15\00:38:11.99 It's the same word. 00:38:12.02\00:38:13.39 In this case, sin has taken up residence in his life 00:38:13.42\00:38:16.96 and is living and dwelling in him. 00:38:16.99\00:38:19.79 One more scripture and then we'll move on. 00:38:19.83\00:38:21.60 Let's jump over to 1 Corinthians, 00:38:21.63\00:38:26.10 1 Corinthians 3:16. 00:38:26.13\00:38:29.20 1 Corinthians 3:16. 00:38:32.17\00:38:34.18 This is the same word oikeo, dwell. 00:38:34.21\00:38:37.15 "Do you not know that you are the temple of God 00:38:37.18\00:38:40.22 and that the Spirit of God dwells in you." 00:38:40.25\00:38:44.09 The Holy Spirit wants to come in to abide. 00:38:44.12\00:38:46.55 That's right. To make our heart His home. 00:38:46.59\00:38:48.76 Revelation 3:20, "Behold," Jesus says, 00:38:48.79\00:38:51.26 "I stand at the door and knock, 00:38:51.29\00:38:53.26 if anyone hears my voice, I will come in 00:38:53.29\00:38:55.43 and supper with him and he with me." 00:38:55.46\00:38:57.23 God wants to come into our hearts and lives and to abide, 00:38:57.27\00:39:01.04 to take up residence as it were. 00:39:01.07\00:39:03.77 Let's go back to Romans 8. 00:39:03.84\00:39:06.27 Romans 8, we're at verse 9. 00:39:06.31\00:39:11.11 "We are not in the flesh but in the spirit. 00:39:11.15\00:39:13.15 If indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you 00:39:13.18\00:39:15.28 or has taken up residence in you. 00:39:15.32\00:39:17.42 Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, 00:39:17.45\00:39:19.59 he is not his." 00:39:19.62\00:39:22.02 Verse 10, "And if Christ is in you, 00:39:22.06\00:39:24.89 the body is dead because of sin, 00:39:24.93\00:39:28.03 but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 00:39:28.06\00:39:31.83 But if the spirit of Him who raised Jesus 00:39:31.87\00:39:34.37 from the dead dwells in you," there is our word again. 00:39:34.40\00:39:38.14 "He who raised Christ from the dead 00:39:38.17\00:39:40.08 will also give life to your mortal bodies 00:39:40.11\00:39:42.71 through His Spirit who dwells in you." 00:39:42.74\00:39:46.61 What's Paul talking about here? 00:39:46.65\00:39:47.98 He's talking about dying to the flesh, 00:39:48.02\00:39:50.52 dying to the old man of sin, and being raised 00:39:50.59\00:39:54.72 or resurrected to a new life in Christ Jesus. 00:39:54.76\00:39:58.36 We think about Romans 6:1-11 00:39:58.39\00:40:00.70 talks about the symbolism of baptism to the old man 00:40:00.73\00:40:03.83 and then we're resurrected 00:40:03.87\00:40:05.20 to that new life in Christ Jesus. 00:40:05.23\00:40:07.67 I think of Galatians 2:20, "I am crucified with Christ. 00:40:07.70\00:40:12.07 Death of flesh, 00:40:12.11\00:40:13.44 death to my own sinful nature nevertheless, 00:40:13.48\00:40:17.05 I live yet not I but Christ lives in me," 00:40:17.11\00:40:20.82 but it doesn't stop there. 00:40:20.88\00:40:22.22 "The life which I now live in the flesh 00:40:22.25\00:40:24.35 I live by faith in the Son of God, 00:40:24.39\00:40:26.82 who loved me, and gave Himself for me." 00:40:26.86\00:40:31.03 It's not us who live. 00:40:31.06\00:40:32.39 Remember, last week, we talked about Romans 7 00:40:32.43\00:40:34.36 and that conflict between the law 00:40:34.40\00:40:37.20 and what he knew to be right and his flesh 00:40:37.23\00:40:40.00 that was still struggling for that supremacy. 00:40:40.07\00:40:42.74 Here we know when we died of Christ, 00:40:42.77\00:40:44.81 it's not us who lives... 00:40:44.84\00:40:47.54 Sorry, when we died a self in sin, 00:40:47.58\00:40:50.11 it's not us who lives any longer or that old man, 00:40:50.18\00:40:53.65 it's the Lord Jesus Christ 00:40:53.68\00:40:55.42 who lives in us, who dwells in us. 00:40:55.45\00:40:58.65 And it's not me trying to grit my teeth and work harder. 00:40:58.69\00:41:01.99 That's right. That's right. 00:41:02.02\00:41:03.36 It's not me trying to not get upset at Pastor CA 00:41:03.43\00:41:05.69 or someone else which I don't need to do 00:41:05.73\00:41:08.56 because he's my friend. 00:41:08.60\00:41:09.93 It's not me trying to not lust or not hate someone or not, 00:41:09.96\00:41:15.04 none of that stuff, it's Christ who lives in me, 00:41:15.07\00:41:19.44 Christ who does the work 00:41:19.47\00:41:21.18 because He has taken up residence with me 00:41:21.21\00:41:23.81 and he dwells in me. 00:41:23.85\00:41:25.85 And this is a daily battle. 00:41:25.88\00:41:27.42 1 Corinthians 15:31, Paul says, "I die daily." 00:41:27.48\00:41:30.95 And to be honest with you, for me it happens. 00:41:30.99\00:41:33.42 I would say moment by moment, not even hourly, you know. 00:41:33.46\00:41:37.99 Sometimes you're in Christ and then all of a sudden 00:41:38.03\00:41:40.46 the old flesh comes up and instantly, 00:41:40.50\00:41:42.30 we have a choice, 00:41:42.33\00:41:43.70 "Lord Jesus, I surrender to you. 00:41:43.73\00:41:45.33 I ask you put to death the old man 00:41:45.37\00:41:47.20 and I want you to live in me." 00:41:47.27\00:41:50.24 We know it's not our work, Philippians 2:13, 00:41:50.27\00:41:52.71 it is God who works in us 00:41:52.74\00:41:54.74 both to will and to do of His good pleasure. 00:41:54.78\00:41:56.68 He gives us the desire 00:41:56.71\00:41:58.05 and the power to live for Jesus. 00:41:58.08\00:42:01.72 There's so many scriptures. 00:42:01.75\00:42:03.18 Colossians 3:3, "You are dead 00:42:03.22\00:42:05.02 and your life is hid with Christ in God." 00:42:05.05\00:42:07.76 1 Peter 2:24, "Who in his own self bare our sins 00:42:07.79\00:42:11.79 in His body on the tree 00:42:11.83\00:42:13.43 that we being dead to sins 00:42:13.50\00:42:15.33 should live on to righteousness." 00:42:15.36\00:42:18.23 Galatians 5:24, "They that are Christ 00:42:18.27\00:42:20.30 have crucified the flesh 00:42:20.34\00:42:22.00 with its affections and its lust." 00:42:22.04\00:42:24.94 Let's look at verse 12. 00:42:24.97\00:42:27.28 Verse 12, Romans 8:12. 00:42:27.34\00:42:28.91 "Therefore, brethren, we are debtors 00:42:28.94\00:42:31.11 not to the flesh to live according to the flesh 00:42:31.15\00:42:33.52 because we are to be dead to that. 00:42:33.58\00:42:35.68 If you live according to the flesh, you will die 00:42:35.72\00:42:38.79 but if by the Spirit you put to the death 00:42:38.82\00:42:41.56 the deeds of the body you will live." 00:42:41.59\00:42:44.63 It's not me who is putting to death 00:42:44.66\00:42:46.33 the deeds of the body, it's the Holy Spirit. 00:42:46.36\00:42:47.96 It's that surrender to allow the Holy Spirit 00:42:48.00\00:42:50.97 to work in me and through me. 00:42:51.00\00:42:53.97 Let's look one more verse I think I have. 00:42:54.00\00:42:56.50 Verse 14. 00:42:56.54\00:42:59.84 "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, 00:42:59.87\00:43:02.71 these are the sons of God." 00:43:02.74\00:43:06.35 In Greek, it's huios, 00:43:06.38\00:43:08.05 a son it could be either by birth or adoption, 00:43:08.08\00:43:10.79 anyone sharing the same nature as their father. 00:43:10.82\00:43:14.06 It emphasizes the likeness of the believer 00:43:14.09\00:43:16.66 to their father in heaven. 00:43:16.73\00:43:18.59 So God says that He wants to call us as His children, 00:43:18.63\00:43:23.73 He wants to call us as His sons and daughters. 00:43:23.77\00:43:25.83 As you mentioned John 1:12, "To them who are..." 00:43:25.87\00:43:30.27 As many as receive them, 00:43:30.31\00:43:31.64 to them He gave the right to become the sons of God. 00:43:31.67\00:43:35.84 And so we were slaves under sin. 00:43:35.88\00:43:38.78 We were born under sin but the Lord Jesus came 00:43:38.81\00:43:42.08 that you when I can be set free 00:43:42.12\00:43:43.99 that we no longer have to serve sin. 00:43:44.05\00:43:47.26 We can serve a new master, 00:43:47.32\00:43:49.36 we can serve the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:43:49.39\00:43:51.09 And how is that accomplished? 00:43:51.13\00:43:52.59 By death of the old man, by surrender 00:43:52.63\00:43:55.76 to the Lord Jesus Christ 00:43:55.80\00:43:57.67 and allowing Him by the power of His Holy Spirit 00:43:57.70\00:44:01.10 to come into you, into each one of us, 00:44:01.14\00:44:03.81 and into indwell to set up residence 00:44:03.84\00:44:07.48 in your heart and in your life. 00:44:07.51\00:44:08.84 Amen. Pastor CA. 00:44:08.88\00:44:10.25 Well done. 00:44:10.28\00:44:11.61 You talked about the right to become the sons of God. 00:44:11.65\00:44:13.62 One of Oswald Chambers most powerful statements 00:44:13.65\00:44:18.35 was his musing on the power to become 00:44:18.39\00:44:22.09 that one of the greatest gifts God has given us 00:44:22.12\00:44:24.33 is the power to become sons. 00:44:24.36\00:44:25.96 And it's interesting Oswald Chambers 00:44:25.99\00:44:28.16 died a hundred years ago, this year, he died 1917. 00:44:28.20\00:44:32.10 But he became more famous after he passed than 00:44:32.13\00:44:36.24 when he was living 00:44:36.27\00:44:37.97 because his wife carried on his legacy 00:44:38.01\00:44:41.54 and he did so much musing on the things of God. 00:44:41.58\00:44:45.01 On Thursday, we are dealing with the spirit of adoption. 00:44:45.05\00:44:48.95 And I'm going to take the noblesse 00:44:48.98\00:44:52.65 of this final chair 00:44:52.69\00:44:54.12 to step on one of your verses and add it to mine 00:44:54.16\00:44:56.06 because I need it so desperately. 00:44:56.09\00:44:57.49 Please. 00:44:57.53\00:44:58.86 Because my text actually is Romans 8:15, 00:44:58.89\00:45:04.50 but really to get the context and to flow it, 00:45:04.53\00:45:07.37 you need 14, 15 and 16. 00:45:07.44\00:45:09.20 Absolutely. So I'm going to read those. 00:45:09.24\00:45:11.71 The Bible says, "For as many as were led 00:45:11.74\00:45:13.91 by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God." 00:45:13.98\00:45:16.68 So those who are led by the Spirit become the sons. 00:45:16.75\00:45:20.32 "For you did not receive 00:45:20.35\00:45:21.92 the spirit of bondage again to fear 00:45:21.95\00:45:24.52 but you receive the spirit of adoption 00:45:24.55\00:45:27.26 by whom we cry out Abba father. 00:45:27.29\00:45:30.63 The Spirit himself bears witness with," excuse me, 00:45:30.66\00:45:33.90 "With our spirit that we are the children of God." 00:45:33.93\00:45:36.56 And I want to flip over quickly to Galatians from last quarter, 00:45:36.63\00:45:41.97 4:6, because Paul is carrying 00:45:42.00\00:45:45.97 this same message to the church, 00:45:46.01\00:45:47.68 to the brothers and sisters at Galatians. 00:45:47.71\00:45:49.94 He structures it slightly different, 00:45:50.01\00:45:51.75 it gives a little shade, a little nuance 00:45:51.78\00:45:53.38 but he's saying basically the same thing. 00:45:53.42\00:45:54.85 I'm in Galatians 4:6. 00:45:54.88\00:45:57.72 "And because you are sons God has sent forth 00:45:57.75\00:46:02.89 the spirit of his son 00:46:02.92\00:46:06.16 into your hearts crying out Abba father." 00:46:06.19\00:46:09.03 So saying the same but a slightly different nuance 00:46:09.06\00:46:11.67 which actually gives a little clarity 00:46:11.70\00:46:13.54 to what he's saying here at the Church of Rome. 00:46:13.57\00:46:16.37 The idea of adoption 00:46:16.40\00:46:17.74 was not really a Jewish thing too much 00:46:17.77\00:46:19.74 because of the way the laws were written, 00:46:19.77\00:46:22.84 there weren't certainly a lot of orphan children around 00:46:22.88\00:46:26.58 and their parents were to be taken care 00:46:26.61\00:46:29.38 of by the nearest kinsmen. 00:46:29.42\00:46:31.82 So, you didn't have a lot of children 00:46:31.85\00:46:33.19 around to be adopted. 00:46:33.22\00:46:35.39 In Rome, the idea of adopting 00:46:35.42\00:46:37.36 was much more common, particularly boys. 00:46:37.43\00:46:40.73 As those of the Praetorian class 00:46:40.80\00:46:43.23 got a little bit older, the patrician class 00:46:43.26\00:46:45.97 and they realized we're not going to have kids. 00:46:46.00\00:46:48.04 They would adopt from the lower classes 00:46:48.07\00:46:52.07 and make those boys, it happen with girls too 00:46:52.11\00:46:55.51 but not so much, mostly with boys. 00:46:55.54\00:46:57.31 And it was mostly something that was done to make sure 00:46:57.35\00:47:01.05 that the family line went on, 00:47:01.08\00:47:02.42 that the succession rights were taken care of, 00:47:02.45\00:47:04.49 and certainly if there was any kingship 00:47:04.52\00:47:07.59 or land ownership, 00:47:07.62\00:47:10.46 they wanted to make sure that that stayed in the family, 00:47:10.49\00:47:12.26 so they just go out and adopt a boy. 00:47:12.29\00:47:14.46 For rights, for honor, for privileges, 00:47:14.50\00:47:17.27 in fact, the most famous adoptee 00:47:17.30\00:47:20.37 was the first true emperor of Rome 00:47:20.44\00:47:22.60 and that was Octavian, Gaius Julius Caesar, adopted 00:47:22.64\00:47:27.91 and became Emperor. 00:47:27.94\00:47:30.15 So it was common, 00:47:30.18\00:47:31.51 so in Paul writing to the Church of Rome, 00:47:31.55\00:47:35.15 they would instinctively know what he's is talking about 00:47:35.18\00:47:38.19 and they would know and understand that 00:47:38.22\00:47:39.55 if you got adopted, 00:47:39.59\00:47:41.19 particularly if you got adopted into a royal household, 00:47:41.22\00:47:45.39 you were kind of made in a shade. 00:47:45.43\00:47:46.80 You know, you got it, you got it, you got it all. 00:47:46.83\00:47:49.46 Anything that they had became yours. 00:47:49.50\00:47:51.77 And so they would understand this idea that 00:47:51.80\00:47:54.84 if you are adopted you have been chosen 00:47:54.87\00:47:56.87 and selected by God. 00:47:56.91\00:47:58.61 And everything that God has is now yours. 00:47:58.64\00:48:02.08 And that would be fully understood 00:48:02.11\00:48:03.78 and accepted by them. 00:48:03.81\00:48:06.31 So Paul is dealing with a new relationship, 00:48:06.35\00:48:11.59 a new relationship to the law 00:48:11.62\00:48:13.59 and a new relationship to the Lord. 00:48:13.62\00:48:18.26 Bondage is trying to do a right thing 00:48:18.29\00:48:24.07 and not being right, is trying to serve a holy God 00:48:24.10\00:48:27.80 and not being holy, is trying to live up 00:48:27.84\00:48:30.41 to righteous law with no righteous. 00:48:30.44\00:48:32.31 That's bondage, that's like trying to do something 00:48:32.34\00:48:35.41 and not having the tool 00:48:35.44\00:48:36.85 or the mechanisms to get it done. 00:48:36.88\00:48:38.31 That's bondage. 00:48:38.35\00:48:39.91 When I look at myself, how can I keep that law? 00:48:39.95\00:48:45.82 How can I do that right thing? 00:48:45.85\00:48:49.62 Even when I want to do it, there's another law in me 00:48:49.66\00:48:54.30 that's saying, "You're not going to do that. 00:48:54.30\00:48:56.63 You're not going to that." 00:48:56.67\00:48:59.27 So I'm fighting against a standard that I cannot meet. 00:48:59.30\00:49:06.17 And I'm fighting against myself which is telling me, 00:49:06.21\00:49:09.28 "You can't meet that standard." 00:49:09.31\00:49:10.68 So I'm lost before I've started. 00:49:10.71\00:49:12.31 So Paul is talking about 00:49:12.35\00:49:13.68 now a brand new relationship to the law. 00:49:13.75\00:49:16.35 That's what legalism is, trying to do something 00:49:16.38\00:49:18.55 and not having the tools to do it 00:49:18.59\00:49:20.12 or trying to do it for the wrong reason. 00:49:20.19\00:49:21.59 So he's saying there's a new relationship now, 00:49:21.62\00:49:23.96 the new relationship is that now I'm a son. 00:49:23.99\00:49:28.60 Now I'm no longer a slave, I'm no longer afraid 00:49:28.63\00:49:32.17 of what the Master is thinking. 00:49:32.20\00:49:33.94 I'm no longer afraid of being beaten. 00:49:33.97\00:49:36.04 I'm no longer subject to those neighbor things. 00:49:36.07\00:49:39.37 Now I'm a son of the law. 00:49:39.41\00:49:41.84 Now I'm part of this whole experience. 00:49:41.88\00:49:46.31 So I go through what's called the curses honorarium, 00:49:46.35\00:49:49.68 the adoption process. 00:49:49.72\00:49:52.25 And now I become a son of the law. 00:49:52.29\00:49:54.72 And so now I can look at the Lord 00:49:54.76\00:49:58.56 as Abba, as Daddy. 00:49:58.59\00:50:02.16 But not only is it a term of endearment and familiarity, 00:50:02.20\00:50:06.70 it is also a term of respect. 00:50:06.74\00:50:09.50 There is with this familiarity, also this idea of respect. 00:50:09.54\00:50:15.04 He's my daddy, He's my friend, He is one that I can trust. 00:50:15.08\00:50:18.88 I remember years ago, we got a church picnic. 00:50:18.91\00:50:21.95 And a fellow with... 00:50:21.98\00:50:24.49 The son was going up to the slide 00:50:24.52\00:50:25.85 and jumping down and father's catching him. 00:50:25.89\00:50:28.02 And we're just all kind of watching. 00:50:28.06\00:50:30.63 And he said, "Go on up and when you jump, 00:50:30.69\00:50:33.29 I'll be there to catch you." 00:50:33.36\00:50:34.96 And the son went up and the dad got distracted 00:50:35.00\00:50:38.30 because his daughter came and grabbed his leg. 00:50:38.33\00:50:40.60 So he immediately looked at the daughter 00:50:40.67\00:50:42.90 and the son went up and jumped. 00:50:42.94\00:50:44.57 You know, because his dad said, "I'm going to catch you." 00:50:44.61\00:50:47.81 So he believed his daddy. 00:50:47.84\00:50:50.08 He caught me before, 00:50:50.11\00:50:51.58 so why wouldn't he catch me now? 00:50:51.61\00:50:52.98 But he didn't know that the daughter 00:50:53.01\00:50:54.35 was grabbing on to daddy's leg. 00:50:54.38\00:50:55.72 And so when he finally came to himself and looked up, 00:50:55.75\00:50:59.85 that boy was right here, he was right here. 00:50:59.89\00:51:02.39 He was about a foot from his head 00:51:02.42\00:51:04.59 because he had jumped. 00:51:04.63\00:51:05.96 And the father caught him. 00:51:05.99\00:51:07.50 Well, he expected daddy to be there. 00:51:07.50\00:51:10.13 So he leapt, he didn't look. He just leapt. 00:51:10.17\00:51:13.50 And that's the way this is. 00:51:13.54\00:51:15.34 When we come into this new relationship 00:51:15.37\00:51:18.77 and the Lord says, "Leap." 00:51:18.81\00:51:20.28 Guess what we do? We leap. 00:51:20.34\00:51:21.71 We leap, that's what we do. 00:51:21.74\00:51:23.45 Abraham looked for a city. God said, "Get up and go." 00:51:23.51\00:51:28.32 You know what Abraham did? 00:51:28.35\00:51:29.68 He got up and went 00:51:29.72\00:51:31.05 because God told him to get up and go. 00:51:31.09\00:51:32.49 Well, it's that kind of relationship 00:51:32.52\00:51:34.26 so that you have a full trust in God. 00:51:34.29\00:51:37.03 You leap when God says leap 00:51:37.09\00:51:38.93 because you know He's going to be there to catch you. 00:51:38.96\00:51:40.86 So it's not a leap in the dark 00:51:40.90\00:51:42.76 because God has caught you before, 00:51:42.80\00:51:44.70 you know he's going to catch you again. 00:51:44.73\00:51:46.27 And so there's a brand new relationship to the Lord. 00:51:46.30\00:51:50.34 The lesson says this. 00:51:50.37\00:51:53.94 It talks about the bondage relationship, 00:51:54.01\00:51:56.08 the slave relationship where you don't really know 00:51:56.11\00:51:58.18 what your master is thinking, you have no insight into 00:51:58.21\00:52:00.55 what's going on in master's head, 00:52:00.62\00:52:02.28 and you have no real right to know. 00:52:02.32\00:52:04.42 You can't go into the master's house 00:52:04.45\00:52:05.79 and say, "Okay, what's happening in here," 00:52:05.82\00:52:07.96 because you're just a slave, you're hireling 00:52:07.99\00:52:09.66 and you're a person who just works for them. 00:52:09.69\00:52:11.53 But a son can come in and say, "What's going on, dad?" 00:52:11.56\00:52:14.86 Because the relationship has changed. 00:52:14.93\00:52:16.30 So the lesson says, "Not so with one 00:52:16.33\00:52:18.37 who accepts Jesus Christ first, 00:52:18.40\00:52:20.97 he or she renders voluntary service." 00:52:21.00\00:52:22.97 It's voluntary. 00:52:23.00\00:52:24.34 We want to come in, we want to serve. 00:52:24.37\00:52:25.74 Second, "He or she serves without fear, 00:52:25.77\00:52:29.11 for perfect love casteth out fear." 00:52:29.14\00:52:31.78 I John 4:18. 00:52:31.81\00:52:34.08 When we come to the Lord, praise God, there is no fear. 00:52:34.12\00:52:39.32 You cannot love what you fear. You cannot. 00:52:39.35\00:52:43.99 The opposite of fear to me is not really hate. 00:52:44.03\00:52:49.33 The opposite of fear is apathy. 00:52:49.36\00:52:52.10 I'm sorry, let me correct that. 00:52:52.13\00:52:54.20 The opposite of love is not fear, 00:52:54.24\00:52:56.74 is not hate, the opposite of love is fear. 00:52:56.77\00:53:02.81 And you cannot love what you fear. 00:53:02.84\00:53:05.08 You cannot love what you don't feel comfortable 00:53:05.11\00:53:07.42 in the presence of. 00:53:07.45\00:53:08.78 And so, as we lose fear of God, we are able to love God more. 00:53:08.82\00:53:14.42 Because when you test God and try God, 00:53:14.46\00:53:17.89 you find out you can trust God. 00:53:17.93\00:53:20.30 So you lose your fear. 00:53:20.33\00:53:25.57 And in that losing of fear, it is replaced with love. 00:53:25.60\00:53:31.21 It's coming. 00:53:31.24\00:53:34.14 Third, "When you're adopted as a child, 00:53:34.18\00:53:37.51 you could become an heir 00:53:37.55\00:53:39.38 and an inheritor of all that God has promised. 00:53:39.41\00:53:45.42 The spirit of bondage is engendered 00:53:45.45\00:53:47.12 by seeking to live in accordance 00:53:47.16\00:53:48.59 with a legal religion through striving to fulfill 00:53:48.62\00:53:52.13 the claims of the law in our own strength." 00:53:52.16\00:53:54.30 That is the textbook definition of bondage, 00:53:54.30\00:53:57.43 trying to lift a holy law in your own strength. 00:53:57.50\00:54:00.97 And you know that, in you dwelleth no good thing. 00:54:01.00\00:54:04.01 There's nothing in there that reaches out and grabs that law. 00:54:04.04\00:54:08.38 But love comes and Freedom comes 00:54:08.41\00:54:10.68 when Christ comes in you which is what Galatians says. 00:54:10.75\00:54:13.45 When Christ comes in you 00:54:13.52\00:54:15.12 and then that law is worked out through you 00:54:15.15\00:54:17.49 and become acceptable to the Lord. 00:54:17.52\00:54:19.22 And, man, time goes fast. Yes, it does. 00:54:19.25\00:54:22.16 And thank you, Pastor CA. That was amazing. 00:54:22.19\00:54:25.23 What we have learned from Pastor CA 00:54:25.26\00:54:28.00 is that we have been adopted into a royal family. 00:54:28.03\00:54:32.33 Now I want to quote him. 00:54:32.37\00:54:34.34 Pastor CA says we've got it made in the shade. 00:54:34.37\00:54:37.47 That's a quote right from you, Pastor. 00:54:37.51\00:54:38.84 Indeed it is. 00:54:38.87\00:54:40.21 And that we have been chosen and selected by God Himself. 00:54:40.24\00:54:45.68 Now, isn't that encouraging? 00:54:45.71\00:54:47.48 Well, I am just encouraged 00:54:47.52\00:54:49.08 because of the whole lesson, Jill, Christ in us. 00:54:49.12\00:54:51.79 Pastor Lomacang, you showed us 00:54:51.82\00:54:53.72 that there's a new law in our heart now 00:54:53.76\00:54:56.09 and it's the law of the spirit of life. 00:54:56.12\00:54:58.09 And Shelley came, what the law couldn't do, 00:54:58.13\00:55:01.10 what Christ can do. 00:55:01.13\00:55:03.87 I want each of you to share just a few moments. 00:55:03.90\00:55:06.67 I think, Jill, we'll start with you. 00:55:06.74\00:55:08.77 Sure. 00:55:08.80\00:55:10.14 Romans 8, the end of the chapter, 00:55:10.21\00:55:11.67 we have not discussed in this lesson. 00:55:11.71\00:55:14.21 So there's one verse I want to read. 00:55:14.28\00:55:15.84 Romans 8:35, "Who shall separate us 00:55:15.88\00:55:19.25 from the love of Christ?" 00:55:19.28\00:55:20.62 And if you read that, 00:55:20.65\00:55:21.98 there is an entire list of things. 00:55:22.02\00:55:23.69 Nothing can separate you from the Lord. 00:55:23.72\00:55:26.22 So when you have made Him the Lord of your life, 00:55:26.25\00:55:28.76 you are justified. 00:55:28.79\00:55:30.13 And as you walk in this journey of sanctification, 00:55:30.16\00:55:32.83 allowing him by the power of His Holy Spirit 00:55:32.86\00:55:35.50 to dwell in your life, 00:55:35.53\00:55:37.13 nothing can separate you from Jesus. 00:55:37.17\00:55:39.77 Amen. Pastor Lomacang. 00:55:39.80\00:55:41.60 You know what the Bible says? 00:55:41.64\00:55:42.97 There is no condemnation to those who walk. 00:55:43.00\00:55:44.44 You know, when we allow Christ to come in, our walk changes. 00:55:44.47\00:55:47.64 When our walk changes, our direction changes. 00:55:47.68\00:55:50.41 When our direction changes, our destiny changes. 00:55:50.45\00:55:53.68 So I would encourage you to invite Christ 00:55:53.72\00:55:55.85 into change your walk, 00:55:55.88\00:55:58.65 your direction, and your destiny. 00:55:58.69\00:56:01.32 Amen. Sister Shelley. 00:56:01.36\00:56:03.32 I was just thinking that, you know, here he's saying, 00:56:03.36\00:56:06.19 "Who will deliver me? 00:56:06.23\00:56:07.56 Thank God, He will through Jesus Christ." 00:56:07.60\00:56:10.57 It's similar to what he wrote, then again. 00:56:10.60\00:56:12.80 Here, he's talking about being delivered 00:56:12.83\00:56:14.64 from the law of sin and death. 00:56:14.67\00:56:16.20 But then in the I Corinthians 15, 00:56:16.24\00:56:18.64 he's talking about again, 00:56:18.67\00:56:20.38 you know, this corruptible is going to put on him, 00:56:20.41\00:56:22.74 corrupt immortality will put on immortality. 00:56:22.78\00:56:26.11 And it's all because he goes on to say 00:56:26.15\00:56:29.02 death is swallowed up in victory. 00:56:29.05\00:56:31.12 And then he again, "Thanks be to God 00:56:31.15\00:56:33.96 who gives us the victory in Christ Jesus." 00:56:33.99\00:56:37.13 That's the answer. Amen. Pastor CA. 00:56:37.16\00:56:40.13 The Bible says, "When you develop this new relationship, 00:56:40.20\00:56:43.83 His spirit, there's witness with your spirit," 00:56:43.87\00:56:47.40 so that you know you are walking in the Lord, 00:56:47.44\00:56:49.40 you know that you can trust the God 00:56:49.44\00:56:51.44 who has called you because like calls to like. 00:56:51.47\00:56:54.71 His spirit is in you and that spirit in you 00:56:54.74\00:56:56.95 put there by God answers to His spirit 00:56:57.01\00:56:59.41 so that you know you are one in Christ Jesus. 00:56:59.45\00:57:01.32 Amen, and amen. 00:57:01.35\00:57:02.68 I want to thank each of you 00:57:02.72\00:57:04.05 for a wonderful Bible study today. 00:57:04.12\00:57:06.05 Thank you so much. 00:57:06.09\00:57:07.42 I want to thank each of you for being here with us. 00:57:07.49\00:57:09.79 And I want to invite you back next Sabbath. 00:57:09.82\00:57:12.66 Same time, same place. 00:57:12.69\00:57:14.30 We come to you every Sabbath morning 00:57:14.36\00:57:16.97 opening up the bread of life, feeding you 00:57:17.00\00:57:20.04 what the Lord has given us. 00:57:20.07\00:57:21.60 Next week, we were on lesson 10 00:57:21.64\00:57:24.31 and we're going to look at children of promise. 00:57:24.34\00:57:26.88 If you make Jesus Christ the Lord of your life, 00:57:26.91\00:57:29.78 then you are a child of promise. 00:57:29.81\00:57:32.31 See you then. 00:57:32.35\00:57:33.72 Amen. 00:57:33.75\00:57:35.08
