Amen. 00:02:43.16\00:02:44.49 Amen. 00:02:44.53\00:02:45.99 We do give Him glory and we praise the Lord 00:02:46.03\00:02:48.16 for His goodness and mercy. 00:02:48.20\00:02:49.83 And this lesson number two is entitled, 00:02:49.86\00:02:53.17 "Paul's authority and gospel". 00:02:53.20\00:02:55.87 Paul's authority and gospel, 00:02:55.90\00:02:57.27 lesson number two of the quarterly. 00:02:57.31\00:02:59.11 And for this week we have a memory text 00:02:59.14\00:03:02.71 found in Galatians 1:10. 00:03:02.74\00:03:05.31 And if you have your Bible study guide with you, 00:03:05.35\00:03:08.08 we want you to read along with us 00:03:08.12\00:03:10.29 and perhaps we could do 00:03:10.32\00:03:11.65 as we did last time, read it together. 00:03:11.69\00:03:13.76 "For do I now persuade men, or God? 00:03:13.79\00:03:17.73 Or do I seek to please men? 00:03:17.76\00:03:20.50 For if I still please men, I would not be 00:03:20.53\00:03:23.93 a bond servant of Christ." 00:03:23.97\00:03:26.57 Thank you. That's Galatians 1:10. 00:03:26.60\00:03:30.04 So we see here that Paul is telling us 00:03:30.07\00:03:34.64 that he is no longer under the plan to please men. 00:03:34.68\00:03:39.25 His desire is to please God. 00:03:39.28\00:03:41.48 And when you desire to please God, 00:03:41.52\00:03:43.08 sometimes you have to disappoint men. 00:03:43.12\00:03:44.99 It's true. 00:03:45.02\00:03:46.35 So Paul had to face these type of things 00:03:46.39\00:03:48.92 and we all do as we walk this Christian life. 00:03:48.96\00:03:52.26 Now this lesson brings us an interesting illustration 00:03:52.29\00:03:55.96 in Saturday's portion and that is, 00:03:56.00\00:03:58.33 suppose a team of university students 00:03:58.37\00:04:02.30 decided to design a room 00:04:02.34\00:04:05.41 where everyone could be together, 00:04:05.44\00:04:07.24 and share with one another, 00:04:07.28\00:04:09.08 and talk about the different challenges 00:04:09.11\00:04:10.81 of the school, 00:04:10.85\00:04:12.18 and seek to improve the school let's say. 00:04:12.21\00:04:15.72 They left this well-established and working well, 00:04:15.75\00:04:19.59 and then they come back a few years later 00:04:19.62\00:04:21.22 for maybe some one of the anniversaries, 00:04:21.26\00:04:23.56 and then they notice that 00:04:23.59\00:04:24.93 it's been divided into females over here, 00:04:24.96\00:04:27.60 males over here, 00:04:27.66\00:04:28.96 and the different types of nations 00:04:29.00\00:04:31.40 in different little rooms. 00:04:31.43\00:04:33.03 Completely different from what it was first established. 00:04:33.07\00:04:36.30 And they ask, "What is this? What's happened here? 00:04:36.34\00:04:38.84 What's going on?" 00:04:38.87\00:04:40.31 And the students responsible for the change would say, 00:04:40.34\00:04:43.58 "Well, we have authority to do this 00:04:43.61\00:04:45.35 because we've gone back in history 00:04:45.38\00:04:47.85 and we have the authority to make this change." 00:04:47.88\00:04:51.39 And, of course, it completely destroyed the unity 00:04:51.42\00:04:54.96 that was once enjoyed by this design. 00:04:54.99\00:04:59.29 And this is the same thing that Paul was facing 00:04:59.33\00:05:02.10 during the time of the Book of Galatians. 00:05:02.13\00:05:05.57 And there was a large group of people that were saying 00:05:05.60\00:05:10.11 that in order for the gentiles to be a part 00:05:10.14\00:05:14.01 of the Christian faith of believers, 00:05:14.04\00:05:16.85 they must be circumcised. 00:05:16.88\00:05:19.98 And as a matter of fact they had to be... 00:05:20.02\00:05:23.35 In order, to be saved, they said, 00:05:23.39\00:05:25.35 you have to be circumcised. 00:05:25.39\00:05:27.32 Interestingly enough, there are some criteria 00:05:27.39\00:05:30.06 that people have placed in these days 00:05:30.09\00:05:32.63 for being saved that are not biblical. 00:05:32.66\00:05:35.43 And, of course, we'll have to deal with these things 00:05:35.46\00:05:37.67 in the future, but we are looking now 00:05:37.70\00:05:40.20 at what happened during the time of Paul. 00:05:40.24\00:05:42.97 And for this reason, 00:05:43.00\00:05:44.51 Paul wrote the Book of Galatians 00:05:44.54\00:05:46.51 to answer these different beliefs. 00:05:46.54\00:05:52.11 Paul saw this as an attack 00:05:52.15\00:05:53.85 on the essence of the gospel itself, 00:05:53.92\00:05:56.72 and this is why he, 00:05:56.75\00:05:59.15 with the blessing of the Holy Spirit 00:05:59.19\00:06:01.32 wrote the Book of Galatians. 00:06:01.39\00:06:03.46 And interestingly enough 00:06:03.49\00:06:05.49 as you look at the Book of Galatians, 00:06:05.53\00:06:07.73 you will find that there are some things 00:06:07.76\00:06:10.47 that at first glance 00:06:10.50\00:06:12.00 may be difficult to be understood. 00:06:12.03\00:06:15.54 So this is when you go to the Lord in prayer 00:06:15.57\00:06:18.01 and you say, "Lord, bless me with Your Holy Spirit 00:06:18.04\00:06:20.48 that I may understand." 00:06:20.51\00:06:22.48 Because if God used the Holy Spirit to impress Paul 00:06:22.51\00:06:27.62 what to write, then we must ask the Lord to bless us 00:06:27.65\00:06:30.52 with the Holy Spirit that we may understand 00:06:30.59\00:06:32.59 what the message was that God intended 00:06:32.62\00:06:35.12 for the Galatians believer. 00:06:35.16\00:06:37.06 Now this, we see the Book of Galatians, 00:06:37.13\00:06:39.96 we have to understand that this is not just for the Galatians, 00:06:40.00\00:06:43.00 this is a book for us today 00:06:43.03\00:06:44.83 because some of the same principles 00:06:44.87\00:06:46.47 are there of people pulling to one side 00:06:46.50\00:06:49.50 is also alive today. 00:06:49.54\00:06:51.97 So by looking at the principles found 00:06:52.01\00:06:53.64 in the Book of Galatians, 00:06:53.68\00:06:55.01 we may learn something about how to handle difficulties 00:06:55.04\00:06:57.55 even in today's Christian time. 00:06:57.61\00:07:01.45 So let's look at the Book of Galatians 00:07:01.48\00:07:05.45 to see what Paul was telling us. 00:07:05.49\00:07:08.69 In the Book of Galatians 00:07:08.72\00:07:10.63 we have a very interesting verse 00:07:10.66\00:07:15.20 that is described here, we want to invite you 00:07:15.23\00:07:16.97 to read 2 Peter 3:15 and 16. 00:07:17.00\00:07:20.07 And I would like to ask one of our panel members 00:07:20.10\00:07:22.74 to read 2 Peter 3:15 and 16. 00:07:22.77\00:07:26.34 Sister Shelley, if you will help us 00:07:26.37\00:07:27.84 with those verses. 00:07:27.88\00:07:29.58 Certainly, 2 Peter 3:15 and 16, 00:07:29.61\00:07:34.48 I'm getting there but pages are sticking. 00:07:34.52\00:07:40.19 2 Peter 3:15 and 16 says this, 00:07:40.22\00:07:43.89 "And consider that the longsuffering 00:07:43.93\00:07:45.83 of our Lord is salvation 00:07:45.86\00:07:47.66 as also our beloved brother Paul, 00:07:47.66\00:07:50.07 according to the wisdom given to him, 00:07:50.10\00:07:52.57 has written to you, as also in all his epistles, 00:07:52.60\00:07:56.57 speaking in them of these things, 00:07:56.60\00:07:59.31 in which are some things hard to understand, 00:07:59.34\00:08:02.54 which untaught and unstable people twist 00:08:02.58\00:08:07.28 to their own destruction, 00:08:07.32\00:08:09.02 as they do also the rest of the Scriptures." 00:08:09.05\00:08:12.22 Thank you so much. 00:08:12.25\00:08:13.59 So we see here two scriptures that we could spend 00:08:13.62\00:08:16.46 the rest of the time talking about 00:08:16.49\00:08:20.56 during the time that we are allowed it. 00:08:20.60\00:08:23.23 Now this is interesting because it says 00:08:23.26\00:08:25.03 that the longsuffering or patience 00:08:25.07\00:08:28.07 of the Lord is our salvation. 00:08:28.10\00:08:29.47 God is interested in our salvation, 00:08:29.50\00:08:31.04 so here in the Book of Galatians 00:08:31.07\00:08:32.41 we find a message of salvation for us. 00:08:32.44\00:08:35.74 And now Peter states that Saul, 00:08:35.78\00:08:42.75 Paul was given wisdom, wisdom from above to write. 00:08:42.78\00:08:48.19 However, it says there are certain people 00:08:48.22\00:08:51.79 were taking the things of Paul and twisting them 00:08:51.83\00:08:55.90 and bringing a different understanding 00:08:55.93\00:08:58.90 other than that which was intended. 00:08:58.93\00:09:02.20 So it says that they do this to their destruction. 00:09:02.24\00:09:05.21 If they did this in those days, the people that twist 00:09:05.24\00:09:09.01 the scriptures today are doing it 00:09:09.04\00:09:11.28 to their own destruction. 00:09:11.31\00:09:12.65 Amen. 00:09:12.68\00:09:14.02 And we are grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ 00:09:14.05\00:09:16.48 that said to us that the Holy Spirit 00:09:16.52\00:09:18.95 will guide us into all truth. 00:09:18.99\00:09:21.69 And this is what we want from the Lord 00:09:21.72\00:09:23.59 as we go into the Book of Galatians 00:09:23.63\00:09:25.59 for the Lord to guide us into all truth. 00:09:25.63\00:09:28.63 And we're now into Sunday, the Paul, the letter writer, 00:09:28.66\00:09:34.14 and when you study the letters of Paul, 00:09:34.17\00:09:37.14 you will notice that 00:09:37.17\00:09:38.51 there is always a nice greeting. 00:09:38.54\00:09:40.54 And he says who he is, he says he's a servant of Christ. 00:09:40.58\00:09:45.61 And when you look at the letters of Paul, 00:09:45.65\00:09:48.02 people thought it was a unique style of writing, 00:09:48.05\00:09:52.02 but discoveries have been made and that really identify 00:09:52.05\00:09:57.36 that Paul's letter was very common in those days. 00:09:57.43\00:10:00.53 And so I like to discuss these things with you 00:10:00.60\00:10:04.90 and we have in Paul's writing 00:10:04.93\00:10:09.54 the different aspects of his letters 00:10:09.57\00:10:12.14 and so let's go to those now. 00:10:12.17\00:10:15.31 In Paul's writings, you will find that... 00:10:15.34\00:10:20.12 Getting my notes here. 00:10:20.15\00:10:22.15 In Paul's writing, you will find that 00:10:22.18\00:10:23.65 he had a format of a greeting. 00:10:23.69\00:10:25.62 He first greeted the people, he told them who he was 00:10:25.65\00:10:28.86 and as he did this, 00:10:28.89\00:10:31.23 you will find then he stated a problem. 00:10:31.29\00:10:34.23 In the Book of Galatians, he brings a problem that was, 00:10:34.30\00:10:37.13 that surfaced among them 00:10:37.20\00:10:38.80 and he begins to address this problem 00:10:38.83\00:10:40.67 so that the believers understand 00:10:40.70\00:10:42.40 what is God's desire, 00:10:42.44\00:10:43.77 what is God's will concerning these things. 00:10:43.81\00:10:46.47 And it's interesting the wording that Paul chooses, 00:10:46.51\00:10:50.68 he's writing to them as a father to his children, 00:10:50.71\00:10:53.55 with like fatherly care. 00:10:53.58\00:10:56.25 Now he uses some strong language 00:10:56.28\00:10:58.22 in Galatians as well, he uses, "Who has bewitched you?" 00:10:58.25\00:11:02.32 There you have so soon fallen from grace, 00:11:02.36\00:11:05.19 so he's trying to catch your attention. 00:11:05.23\00:11:06.63 Wait a minute, this is the guy that helps us understand 00:11:06.66\00:11:09.60 the way of the Lord. 00:11:09.63\00:11:11.80 So what happened to us? Where did we go wrong? 00:11:11.83\00:11:14.37 So they read the letter of Paul with great interest to see 00:11:14.40\00:11:18.64 what does Paul want to tell us. 00:11:18.67\00:11:20.91 He brought us light, what does he want to tell us 00:11:20.94\00:11:24.28 that we need to understand. 00:11:24.31\00:11:25.88 So I believe the Book of Galatians 00:11:25.91\00:11:27.25 was a great blessing to the people of Galatia. 00:11:27.28\00:11:29.98 It helped them understand 00:11:30.02\00:11:31.45 the truth that God wanted them to bring out. 00:11:31.52\00:11:35.36 And, of course, we have to see 00:11:35.39\00:11:38.46 that there was a battle going on 00:11:38.49\00:11:39.96 between those that wanted them to be circumcised 00:11:40.00\00:11:42.90 and those that wanted them to continue following the faith 00:11:42.93\00:11:47.74 that was delivered to the Jews. 00:11:47.77\00:11:49.87 Now, I'd like to bring something out 00:11:49.90\00:11:51.31 that I believe is interesting. 00:11:51.34\00:11:52.87 When John the Baptist was preaching, 00:11:52.91\00:11:54.71 he said concerning Jesus, "Behold, the Lamb of God..." 00:11:54.78\00:11:58.45 That what? 00:11:58.48\00:11:59.81 "Taketh away the sins of the world." 00:11:59.85\00:12:02.45 Now this to the people, "What did he say? 00:12:02.48\00:12:05.29 What did he mean?" 00:12:05.32\00:12:06.76 Because they were saying that Jesus is the Lamb of God 00:12:06.79\00:12:10.76 that takes away the sin of the world. 00:12:10.79\00:12:12.73 They were accustomed to bringing a lamb 00:12:12.76\00:12:15.66 so they could have their sins forgiven, 00:12:15.70\00:12:17.07 but now John the Baptist is saying 00:12:17.10\00:12:19.80 something different than they heard. 00:12:19.83\00:12:21.44 So I believe God was already bringing them a light. 00:12:21.47\00:12:25.34 Yes. 00:12:25.37\00:12:26.84 God gives us light one step at a time to lead us 00:12:26.88\00:12:29.64 to a greater light. 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.05 So what God gave to the Jews through Moses 00:12:31.08\00:12:34.22 and to the prophets was light, but there was greater light 00:12:34.25\00:12:38.95 that was coming that if they accepted 00:12:38.99\00:12:41.66 the light they had and embraced it, 00:12:41.69\00:12:44.03 by the time that Jesus came on the scene, 00:12:44.06\00:12:47.13 they were looking at the sacrifices having merit 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.90 in themselves 00:12:49.93\00:12:51.27 and not that they were a symbol of the Christ that was to come, 00:12:51.33\00:12:55.34 the seed that was promised. 00:12:55.37\00:12:57.47 So the light that they received, 00:12:57.51\00:13:02.01 embracing it and understanding it fully. 00:13:02.04\00:13:04.01 When greater light would come, they would embrace it 00:13:04.05\00:13:06.82 as many did because we see that 00:13:06.85\00:13:09.85 when Peter preached his first sermon 00:13:09.88\00:13:11.89 3,000 accepted. 00:13:11.92\00:13:14.76 And so God today wants to do the same thing, 00:13:14.79\00:13:19.49 He did for those... 00:13:19.53\00:13:20.93 The people in those times, the Jews 00:13:20.96\00:13:22.30 and the gentile of those days. 00:13:22.33\00:13:25.10 We have in the Book of Galatians a book 00:13:25.13\00:13:26.87 that needs to be studied. 00:13:26.90\00:13:28.30 A book that deserves our attention, 00:13:28.34\00:13:30.21 a book that should not be brushed aside as a book 00:13:30.24\00:13:33.31 that doesn't have information for us today. 00:13:33.34\00:13:35.98 It is a book that deserves everyone's attention 00:13:36.01\00:13:39.01 and prayerful study. 00:13:39.05\00:13:40.38 So, Jill. Amen. 00:13:40.42\00:13:41.75 Amen. 00:13:41.78\00:13:43.12 I agree with you, Pastor John, 00:13:43.15\00:13:44.49 and because the Book of Galatians 00:13:44.55\00:13:45.89 contains the elements, the truth, 00:13:45.92\00:13:47.72 the gospel of righteousness by faith. 00:13:47.76\00:13:49.89 Amen. 00:13:49.92\00:13:51.29 And if we don't know how to come to Jesus. 00:13:51.33\00:13:53.33 If we don't know how to come into right relationship, 00:13:53.36\00:13:55.76 then where would we be? 00:13:55.80\00:13:57.13 It's all about salvation. 00:13:57.17\00:13:58.57 And my part is Monday, Paul's calling, 00:13:58.60\00:14:01.34 and it's interesting you brought this up, 00:14:01.37\00:14:03.24 Brother Johnny, how Paul addresses 00:14:03.27\00:14:06.21 or his greeting or salutation for the beginning 00:14:06.24\00:14:10.45 of each one of his 13 epistles that he wrote. 00:14:10.48\00:14:13.18 And they're all just slightly different. 00:14:13.21\00:14:15.92 I have here underneath my notes here 00:14:15.95\00:14:18.59 some letters from my husband Greg. 00:14:18.62\00:14:23.19 So this first one is written in 1999. 00:14:23.22\00:14:27.60 And I want you to... 00:14:27.66\00:14:28.96 I'm not gonna read you to the letter 00:14:29.00\00:14:30.33 because these are personal 00:14:30.37\00:14:32.10 and we don't wanna spread that around. 00:14:32.13\00:14:33.94 But if you look at the greeting, 00:14:33.97\00:14:35.70 the opening, you notice a difference, a progression. 00:14:35.74\00:14:39.17 This one's written in 99 and it says, "Dear, Jill." 00:14:39.21\00:14:42.48 Okay. That's my name. 00:14:42.51\00:14:44.48 Ninety nine it says, "Dear, Jill." 00:14:44.51\00:14:46.38 Now this one is postmark 2001. 00:14:46.41\00:14:49.55 Well, two years. Two years. 00:14:49.58\00:14:52.49 You open it says, "To my dear, Jilly." 00:14:52.52\00:14:55.32 Oh, oh... Oh. 00:14:55.36\00:14:56.69 So you can see just in the salutation 00:14:56.73\00:14:59.46 or in the greeting there is a little bit 00:14:59.49\00:15:01.06 of a progression would you say in relationship. 00:15:01.10\00:15:04.60 Now this one, the front of it says, 00:15:04.63\00:15:08.80 "Precious little piglet." 00:15:08.84\00:15:10.27 That's his nickname for me. 00:15:10.31\00:15:12.41 "Sweet little piglet, beautiful little piglet." 00:15:12.44\00:15:16.11 Now this is a pretty nice letter 00:15:16.14\00:15:17.61 you can see why I kept it. 00:15:17.68\00:15:19.61 You open it up... 00:15:19.65\00:15:20.98 This is in 2002, 00:15:21.05\00:15:22.38 this is the year we got married. 00:15:22.42\00:15:23.75 This is shortly before... 00:15:23.79\00:15:25.12 It says, "To my one and only..." 00:15:25.15\00:15:27.79 See the progression, dear, Jill, to my dear, Jilly, 00:15:27.82\00:15:33.09 to my one and only. 00:15:33.13\00:15:36.16 So when you look at Paul's greetings 00:15:36.20\00:15:39.77 his opening salutation, 00:15:39.80\00:15:41.44 it gives you just a picture of his... 00:15:41.47\00:15:43.27 You could even say relationship 00:15:43.30\00:15:46.24 with the people that he's writing to. 00:15:46.27\00:15:49.44 And he always mentions the sender 00:15:49.48\00:15:51.58 who he's sending the letter to, and the recipient, 00:15:51.65\00:15:54.62 who the letter is been addressed to, 00:15:54.65\00:15:55.98 and then he always gives his name as well. 00:15:56.02\00:15:57.79 Now it's interesting if you look, I did a little, 00:15:57.82\00:16:00.09 we won't work all this up. 00:16:00.12\00:16:01.72 But if you look at the different epistles of Paul, 00:16:01.76\00:16:04.49 the Book of Corinthians say 1 Corinthians, he says, 00:16:04.56\00:16:08.20 "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ 00:16:08.23\00:16:11.17 through the will of God." 00:16:11.20\00:16:12.77 In 2 Corinthians, he says, "An apostle of Jesus Christ 00:16:12.80\00:16:16.30 by the will of God." 00:16:16.34\00:16:18.04 Romans says, "Servant of Jesus Christ, 00:16:18.11\00:16:20.48 called to be an apostle." 00:16:20.51\00:16:22.21 Do you notice his greeting, 00:16:22.24\00:16:23.88 every time he mentions the word apostle? 00:16:23.91\00:16:27.58 In Ephesians, "An apostle of Jesus Christ." 00:16:27.62\00:16:30.35 Colossians, "Apostle of Jesus Christ 00:16:30.39\00:16:32.62 by the will of God." 00:16:32.65\00:16:34.22 Now in Philemon he writes, "A prisoner of Jesus Christ." 00:16:34.26\00:16:37.83 And we know this is the pastoral, 00:16:37.86\00:16:39.59 the prison epistles written from prison. 00:16:39.63\00:16:42.73 Philippians, "Servants of Jesus Christ." 00:16:42.76\00:16:46.13 1 Timothy, he goes back to apostle, 00:16:46.17\00:16:48.40 "Apostle of Jesus Christ." 00:16:48.44\00:16:50.64 Titus, "Servant of God, an apostle of Jesus Christ." 00:16:50.67\00:16:54.14 In 2 Timothy, "Apostle of Jesus Christ 00:16:54.18\00:16:56.28 by the will of God." 00:16:56.31\00:16:57.65 Now each one of these, he just makes 00:16:57.71\00:16:59.71 a blanket statement you could say, 00:16:59.75\00:17:02.08 like it's understood. 00:17:02.12\00:17:03.75 Everyone reading the letter would know Paul is an apostle, 00:17:03.79\00:17:06.89 he doesn't explain, he doesn't go into it, 00:17:06.92\00:17:09.72 it's simply, Paul an apostle of Jesus Christ. 00:17:09.76\00:17:12.66 Now Galatians is a little different. 00:17:12.69\00:17:14.40 Let's look at Galatians 1:1. 00:17:14.46\00:17:18.67 And he always defends his apostleship in this book. 00:17:18.70\00:17:23.20 We know that this book was probably, definitely, 00:17:23.24\00:17:26.47 probably the first one that Paul had written. 00:17:26.51\00:17:29.98 And one of the first books written in the New Testament 00:17:30.01\00:17:32.55 and he defends his apostleship. 00:17:32.58\00:17:35.58 Verse 1, "Paul, an apostle not from men nor through man, 00:17:35.62\00:17:41.56 but through Jesus Christ and God the Father 00:17:41.62\00:17:45.09 who raised him from the dead." 00:17:45.13\00:17:47.60 Verse 2, "And all the brethren who are with me." 00:17:47.66\00:17:49.73 So he's saying, I'm not just writing for me, 00:17:49.76\00:17:51.30 but I'm writing from all the brethren. 00:17:51.33\00:17:52.90 But you notice he didn't just run by it, 00:17:52.93\00:17:54.97 he didn't just say, 00:17:55.00\00:17:56.34 "Paul an apostle of Jesus Christ. 00:17:56.37\00:17:57.97 Now I'm gonna give you my letter, 00:17:58.04\00:17:59.77 I'm gonna write to you." 00:17:59.81\00:18:01.28 He says, "I'm not an apostle from men nor through men." 00:18:01.31\00:18:05.21 You know what that indicates to me that some in Galatians, 00:18:05.25\00:18:08.38 some people maybe pockets, maybe some other Judaizers 00:18:08.42\00:18:11.85 who were saying, "You had o be circumcised 00:18:11.89\00:18:13.82 in order to be saved." 00:18:13.86\00:18:15.32 Maybe some of these people were questioning 00:18:15.36\00:18:18.29 his apostolic authority and he's saying, 00:18:18.33\00:18:20.96 "My apostolic authority, 00:18:21.00\00:18:22.50 my apostleship does not come from the will of man." 00:18:22.53\00:18:26.57 It does not come... 00:18:26.60\00:18:28.47 Acts 13, when the church leaders 00:18:28.50\00:18:31.67 laid hands on him and Barnabas 00:18:31.74\00:18:33.38 and set them apart from ministry. 00:18:33.41\00:18:35.44 Now obviously that was a recognition 00:18:35.48\00:18:37.98 of the call of God on his life, but he's saying, 00:18:38.01\00:18:40.08 "It didn't come from that, 00:18:40.12\00:18:41.68 it didn't come from Ananias who, you know, 00:18:41.75\00:18:46.15 baptized was with me at the beginning, 00:18:46.19\00:18:47.82 it didn't come from that. 00:18:47.89\00:18:49.22 My authority came from the Lord Jesus Christ." 00:18:49.26\00:18:51.66 Amen. 00:18:51.69\00:18:53.03 And as we go through Galatians 1, 00:18:53.06\00:18:54.56 he references his time, 00:18:54.60\00:18:57.00 his road on the way to Damascus, 00:18:57.03\00:18:59.10 and how he met and saw the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:18:59.13\00:19:03.24 His apostolic authority lay from God. 00:19:03.27\00:19:08.21 He saw Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus 00:19:08.24\00:19:11.08 and that's when he had his conversion experience. 00:19:11.11\00:19:13.88 And that's when God first called him to be His disciple, 00:19:13.92\00:19:18.32 His apostle to the gentiles. 00:19:18.35\00:19:21.22 You know, you wonder why maybe they had an issue 00:19:21.29\00:19:23.83 with his apostolic authority, 00:19:23.86\00:19:25.99 maybe they didn't like some of the things, 00:19:26.03\00:19:27.76 can we say this? 00:19:27.76\00:19:29.10 Some of the things he was teaching, right. 00:19:29.13\00:19:31.87 Maybe they had an issue with salvation by grace 00:19:31.90\00:19:35.44 through faith because they said, 00:19:35.47\00:19:36.81 "Salvation comes by grace plus works, 00:19:36.84\00:19:40.08 you got to be circumcised to you have to have 00:19:40.11\00:19:42.18 that grace and works." 00:19:42.21\00:19:43.85 Then maybe they didn't like 00:19:43.88\00:19:45.25 the concept of justification by faith. 00:19:45.28\00:19:47.12 For whatever reason at the beginning of his letter, 00:19:47.15\00:19:50.59 he opens up and says, "I'm an apostle 00:19:50.62\00:19:53.15 and I'm called by the Lord Jesus Christ." 00:19:53.19\00:19:56.22 I think it's so important 00:19:56.26\00:19:58.53 as we look at even the church today, 00:19:58.56\00:20:01.26 so many times we could be making decisions 00:20:01.30\00:20:07.64 not based on the Word of God but based on what a man says, 00:20:07.67\00:20:12.17 instead of the inherent Word of God. 00:20:12.21\00:20:15.44 You know, you see today, in today's culture we see it 00:20:15.48\00:20:18.25 within our church and outside the church 00:20:18.31\00:20:20.28 and other Christian dominations. 00:20:20.32\00:20:22.32 We see ways where the authority of scripture, 00:20:22.35\00:20:24.85 the authority of the Word of God 00:20:24.89\00:20:26.59 is being undermined. 00:20:26.62\00:20:28.32 It's true. 00:20:28.36\00:20:29.69 May be a six-day literal creation week 00:20:29.72\00:20:32.93 and people say it took a 1,000 years 00:20:32.96\00:20:36.16 for the first day. 00:20:36.20\00:20:37.53 And then a 1,000 years for the second day, 00:20:37.57\00:20:40.14 instead of the Word of God says in the beginning. 00:20:40.17\00:20:43.74 It says, "And the evening and the morning 00:20:43.77\00:20:45.34 were the first day." 00:20:45.37\00:20:46.71 And then the second day, etcetera. 00:20:46.74\00:20:48.41 Maybe sometimes we see it people questioning 00:20:48.44\00:20:51.71 the reality of the sanctuary in heaven and saying, 00:20:51.78\00:20:55.15 "I'm not sure if there is a heavenly sanctuary." 00:20:55.18\00:20:58.52 Instead of basing our doctrine and belief 00:20:58.55\00:21:01.69 on the authority of scripture, 00:21:01.76\00:21:03.32 the authority of the Word of God, 00:21:03.36\00:21:05.19 we see it today in righteousness by faith. 00:21:05.23\00:21:07.30 And to be honest with you, I came out of that. 00:21:07.30\00:21:11.13 My upbringing was such... 00:21:11.17\00:21:13.27 Came out of righteousness by faith? 00:21:13.30\00:21:14.97 No, I came out of righteousness by works. 00:21:15.00\00:21:17.51 Okay. 00:21:17.54\00:21:18.87 So my upbringing was such that, yes, 00:21:18.91\00:21:21.54 I'm saved by grace through faith, 00:21:21.61\00:21:23.28 but I have to combine my works with that 00:21:23.31\00:21:26.61 in order to somehow earn salvation. 00:21:26.65\00:21:30.75 Instead of knowing that, 00:21:30.79\00:21:32.79 if I accept the Lord Jesus Christ 00:21:32.82\00:21:35.19 as my personal savior that at that moment 00:21:35.22\00:21:39.29 I stand before Him justified, and clothed, and forgiven, 00:21:39.33\00:21:44.10 and then He empowers me. 00:21:44.13\00:21:45.83 Of course, we're not laying aside the works, 00:21:45.87\00:21:47.94 but He empowers me then to walk as He walked 00:21:47.97\00:21:51.84 when He was on this earth. 00:21:51.91\00:21:53.24 But we see those ditches maybe saying, 00:21:53.27\00:21:55.38 "Okay, we don't believe in righteousness by faith, 00:21:55.41\00:21:58.05 we believe in righteousness by works," 00:21:58.08\00:21:59.58 which is what I was taught. 00:21:59.61\00:22:01.02 Or all we need is grace, 00:22:01.05\00:22:04.15 all we need is righteousness by faith, 00:22:04.19\00:22:06.15 and we don't need to walk in victory over sin. 00:22:06.19\00:22:10.33 Maybe we base our walk, our relationship with God 00:22:10.36\00:22:14.13 based off of how I feel instead of going by 00:22:14.20\00:22:17.97 what the Word of God says. 00:22:18.00\00:22:20.70 We even see today the authority of scripture 00:22:20.74\00:22:23.47 being questioned with marriage saying, 00:22:23.51\00:22:26.24 "It doesn't matter, marriage isn't really 00:22:26.27\00:22:28.28 one man and one woman, 00:22:28.31\00:22:29.68 marriage is just simply as long as you love each other, 00:22:29.71\00:22:33.08 that's all that really matters." 00:22:33.11\00:22:34.85 So we see the authority of scripture is so important 00:22:34.92\00:22:38.62 and Paul lays that down right at the very beginning, 00:22:38.69\00:22:41.46 when he says, "I am calling, 00:22:41.49\00:22:43.02 the letter I'm about to write to you Galatians 00:22:43.06\00:22:46.36 is because God has called me. 00:22:46.39\00:22:48.86 I'm not writing of my own authority 00:22:48.90\00:22:50.57 or of any man, but I'm writing 00:22:50.60\00:22:52.30 because God has called me to do that." 00:22:52.33\00:22:55.50 Amen, and amen. 00:22:55.54\00:22:57.04 You know, it's interesting to me 00:22:57.07\00:22:59.51 when we were saying what Peter's comment 00:22:59.54\00:23:03.08 about Paul's writings, he said, 00:23:03.11\00:23:05.15 "It's difficult for some to misunderstand." 00:23:05.18\00:23:08.32 He didn't say he misunderstood it, 00:23:08.35\00:23:10.02 but he refers to Paul's writings as scripture. 00:23:10.05\00:23:13.89 Right. 00:23:13.92\00:23:15.26 So it was recognized right from the very beginning 00:23:15.29\00:23:18.53 and usually when we've got people 00:23:18.56\00:23:21.03 who are twisting scriptures 00:23:21.06\00:23:23.30 what happens is they will take a scripture, 00:23:23.33\00:23:26.57 and put it out of place, and they hold on to that, 00:23:26.60\00:23:28.94 and they think they've got justification 00:23:29.00\00:23:30.77 for their teaching, yet they're not looking 00:23:30.81\00:23:33.41 at the broad picture. 00:23:33.44\00:23:34.78 Okay. 00:23:34.84\00:23:36.18 So I have Tuesday, 00:23:36.21\00:23:37.71 Paul's gospel in addition to defending his apostleship. 00:23:37.75\00:23:43.72 What Paul does in the very beginning 00:23:43.75\00:23:46.25 is he's emphasizing grace and peace. 00:23:46.29\00:23:48.42 Let's look at Galatians 1:3. 00:23:48.46\00:23:50.69 He says, "Grace to you and peace from God the Father, 00:23:50.73\00:23:56.46 and our Lord Jesus Christ." 00:23:56.50\00:23:58.50 He begins his letters, Ephesians, Philippians, 00:23:58.53\00:24:01.87 Colossians with the same words, grace and peace. 00:24:01.94\00:24:06.57 Did you know that Paul uses the word grace over 100 times 00:24:06.61\00:24:11.91 and that is in the New Testament more than 00:24:11.95\00:24:15.12 half of the New Testament use of the word grace 00:24:15.18\00:24:19.32 belongs to Paul. 00:24:19.35\00:24:20.69 There is about a 170 times where grace is used. 00:24:20.72\00:24:23.49 But in God's language of love, 00:24:23.53\00:24:25.19 there is no weightier word than grace. 00:24:25.23\00:24:29.13 This is covenant commitment. 00:24:29.16\00:24:30.67 Do you know what the Old Testament equivalent 00:24:30.70\00:24:33.60 for grace was? 00:24:33.64\00:24:35.27 I didn't know this to most recently 00:24:35.30\00:24:37.71 and I cannot believe it, 00:24:37.74\00:24:39.07 but I was studying in the Hebrew, 00:24:39.11\00:24:41.28 "hesed" is the Old Testament 00:24:41.31\00:24:46.35 equivalent of grace. 00:24:46.38\00:24:48.75 It's used 240 times in the Old Testament 00:24:48.78\00:24:52.12 and its translated loving kindness, 00:24:52.15\00:24:54.66 steadfast love, grace, mercy, 00:24:54.69\00:24:56.42 faithfulness, goodness, and devotion. 00:24:56.46\00:24:58.46 But let me give you an incredible definition 00:24:58.49\00:25:01.86 that I found and this is from the dictionary 00:25:01.90\00:25:05.40 of the Old Testament wisdom writings in poetry, it says, 00:25:05.43\00:25:10.87 "The Hebrew word has said cannot be translated 00:25:10.91\00:25:14.71 by one English word. 00:25:14.74\00:25:16.54 It is a covenant term wrapping up in itself 00:25:16.58\00:25:20.65 all the positive attributes of God. 00:25:20.68\00:25:23.75 Love, covenant, faithfulness, mercy, grace, kindness, 00:25:23.79\00:25:29.36 loyalty, in short, acts of devotion 00:25:29.39\00:25:33.56 and loving kindness that go beyond 00:25:33.60\00:25:37.00 the requirements of duty." 00:25:37.03\00:25:39.37 So "hesed" really in the Old Testament 240 times, 00:25:39.40\00:25:43.71 that's like grace and agape. 00:25:43.74\00:25:46.94 The grace of God 00:25:46.98\00:25:48.31 and the unconditional love of God all wrapped up into one. 00:25:48.38\00:25:52.05 It's such a beautiful word, 00:25:52.08\00:25:53.92 but grace was not a common place 00:25:53.95\00:25:55.98 greeting of the day. 00:25:56.02\00:25:57.79 What the Greek authors if they were writing, 00:25:57.82\00:26:01.06 they would use the word greetings, 00:26:01.09\00:26:03.43 which is charan. 00:26:03.46\00:26:05.46 But Paul uses grace, which is charis, 00:26:05.49\00:26:08.80 and then he adds the typical Jewish blessing 00:26:08.83\00:26:12.27 or greeting of peace. 00:26:12.30\00:26:14.24 So this wasn't just a pleasantry, 00:26:14.27\00:26:17.27 what he was doing is summing up 00:26:17.31\00:26:18.71 really his whole gospel message, 00:26:18.74\00:26:20.94 the grace didn't come from Paul, 00:26:20.98\00:26:23.21 it came from God the Father. 00:26:23.24\00:26:25.15 And he thought that this word grace 00:26:25.18\00:26:29.05 if he used it over a 100 times, 00:26:29.12\00:26:31.52 it had such noteworthy value to him 00:26:31.55\00:26:34.36 that it became his customary blessing. 00:26:34.39\00:26:36.62 And basically when he affirmed grace over someone 00:26:36.66\00:26:40.46 as he did usually at the beginning of his 00:26:40.50\00:26:43.60 and at the end of his letters, 00:26:43.63\00:26:46.70 it was like he was pronouncing all the some of God's blessings 00:26:46.74\00:26:51.57 on the people through this affirmation of grace. 00:26:51.61\00:26:54.98 So to me what's wonderful about Paul's life 00:26:55.04\00:26:59.48 is that here he was the former persecutor 00:26:59.51\00:27:03.12 of Christians, now he has, he said, 00:27:03.15\00:27:07.06 he was, you know, he said, 00:27:07.09\00:27:08.46 he's the self-proclaimed chief of sinners, 00:27:08.49\00:27:11.63 but now he is God's ambassador for grace, 00:27:11.66\00:27:18.43 isn't that amazing? 00:27:18.47\00:27:20.04 Here's a man who was doing everything he could 00:27:20.07\00:27:23.20 to work his way into the Kingdom of God. 00:27:23.24\00:27:26.21 Now he is the ambassador of grace 00:27:26.24\00:27:29.18 because once he met the master of grace, 00:27:29.24\00:27:32.45 it had life altering effect on him. 00:27:32.51\00:27:34.25 You know, Shelley, I wonder 00:27:34.28\00:27:35.62 if that was a challenge for him, 00:27:35.68\00:27:37.02 as you said he was so forceful against the word. 00:27:37.05\00:27:39.89 Sure. 00:27:39.92\00:27:41.26 Was it whenever he became transformed 00:27:41.29\00:27:44.76 from Saul to Paul. 00:27:44.79\00:27:46.23 I wonder if it was a challenge everyday for him 00:27:46.26\00:27:48.96 to stay under that grace or did he want to go out there 00:27:49.03\00:27:51.83 with the big stick and whip people into action 00:27:51.90\00:27:54.40 into the change. 00:27:54.44\00:27:55.80 You know, what I'm saying, he was so forceful, 00:27:55.87\00:27:57.54 so forceful the way he was. 00:27:57.57\00:27:59.04 What an interesting comment because I didn't grow up 00:27:59.07\00:28:01.51 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:28:01.54\00:28:02.94 but I grew up in "a New Testament church" 00:28:02.98\00:28:05.91 that was so performance oriented. 00:28:05.95\00:28:07.75 You had to do this, you had to do that, 00:28:07.78\00:28:09.18 if I didn't do everything right and be just perfect, 00:28:09.22\00:28:11.39 I wasn't accepted by God. 00:28:11.42\00:28:13.46 And so I grew up with that even when God started teaching me 00:28:13.49\00:28:18.03 the truth about grace, the beautiful thing about 00:28:18.06\00:28:21.10 the Sabbath which is... 00:28:21.13\00:28:22.80 Did you know the Sabbath is the sign 00:28:22.83\00:28:24.77 of the everlasting covenant of grace? 00:28:24.80\00:28:26.70 Because God says, "It's a sign that He is the one 00:28:26.74\00:28:31.21 who will sanctify you." 00:28:31.24\00:28:32.77 So every now and then 00:28:32.81\00:28:34.14 when I come time for the Sabbath, 00:28:34.18\00:28:35.91 it's just kind of like, "Oh, thank you, Lord." 00:28:35.94\00:28:38.98 I realize I was getting off on to that performance mentality, 00:28:39.01\00:28:43.22 I bet Paul did, I wonder if he did. 00:28:43.25\00:28:46.35 But what is the definition for grace? 00:28:46.39\00:28:49.49 Unmerited favor. 00:28:49.52\00:28:50.86 Unmerited favor, what does it mean? 00:28:50.89\00:28:52.46 It means the unearned, undeserved gifts of God. 00:28:52.49\00:28:56.06 That's right. 00:28:56.10\00:28:57.43 But listen to the most prominent meaning of grace 00:28:57.47\00:29:02.94 is an act of favor or goodwill gift from God. 00:29:02.97\00:29:06.14 Strong's Concordance says, 00:29:06.17\00:29:08.41 "Grace is the divine influence upon the heart 00:29:08.44\00:29:13.75 and its reflections in the life." 00:29:13.78\00:29:16.95 See, you've got to understand the gifts of grace 00:29:16.99\00:29:20.09 to understand the effects of grace. 00:29:20.12\00:29:22.69 What was the greatest gift God ever gave to mankind? 00:29:22.72\00:29:25.49 God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son. 00:29:25.56\00:29:28.53 So Jesus Christ and His merit are gift of grace. 00:29:28.60\00:29:33.10 The Holy Spirit is a gift of grace. 00:29:33.13\00:29:36.47 The Holy Scriptures are the gift of grace. 00:29:36.50\00:29:39.31 So what we have when you look at grace, I want to give you... 00:29:39.34\00:29:43.78 This is my definition of grace because in the Lord 00:29:43.81\00:29:48.55 as I was studying through this years ago, 00:29:48.62\00:29:50.99 I believe God really showed me this, 00:29:51.02\00:29:53.76 "Divine grace is the unearned, undeserved gifts, 00:29:53.79\00:29:57.33 bestowed by a God of infinite love, 00:29:57.36\00:30:01.40 which provide His divine assistance 00:30:01.43\00:30:05.93 and supernatural power unto salvation. 00:30:05.97\00:30:08.90 Amen. Amen. 00:30:08.94\00:30:10.27 See, God's heart wells with love for us 00:30:10.31\00:30:13.71 and then His grace as I see God showed me this 00:30:13.74\00:30:16.54 that it comes down by His grace pipeline, 00:30:16.58\00:30:19.81 we tap into that by... 00:30:19.85\00:30:24.22 Faith is the faucet, that's how we tap in 00:30:24.25\00:30:27.06 to God's grace pipeline. 00:30:27.09\00:30:28.92 And then prayer is the handle that opens the faith faucet. 00:30:28.96\00:30:32.39 Trust is the foundation for prayer, 00:30:32.43\00:30:35.13 and love is the foundation for trust, 00:30:35.16\00:30:37.83 so it's kind of like this whole circle. 00:30:37.87\00:30:40.04 The more we recognize how God loves us, 00:30:40.07\00:30:42.80 the more we love Him, we only love Him 00:30:42.84\00:30:44.41 because He first loved us, right? 00:30:44.44\00:30:46.61 So then the more we love Him, the more we trust Him, 00:30:46.64\00:30:50.35 we get into His Word, we know Him. 00:30:50.38\00:30:52.38 The greater our relationship, then the more we prayed 00:30:52.41\00:30:55.45 by the prayer of faith and tap into the grace pipeline. 00:30:55.48\00:30:59.95 So let's look at Galatians 1:1-6. 00:31:00.06\00:31:03.02 I've only got short time. 00:31:03.06\00:31:04.73 But in Galatians 1, here is Paul's opponents 00:31:04.76\00:31:08.96 are trumpeting salvation by faith 00:31:09.03\00:31:12.70 plus conformity to the law. 00:31:12.73\00:31:15.77 And now he gives a masterful response 00:31:15.80\00:31:18.97 that's gonna prove to the contrary. 00:31:19.04\00:31:21.48 Galatians 1:1, 00:31:21.51\00:31:23.38 "Paul, an apostle not from men through man, 00:31:23.41\00:31:26.11 but through Jesus Christ and God the Father 00:31:26.15\00:31:29.48 who raised him from the dead." 00:31:29.52\00:31:31.69 So right here he's talking about a risen Savior. 00:31:31.72\00:31:35.12 "And all the brethren who are with me, 00:31:35.19\00:31:36.89 to the churches of Galatia, grace to you 00:31:36.93\00:31:40.70 and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:31:40.73\00:31:44.53 who gave Himself for our sins." 00:31:44.57\00:31:47.54 There he's showing, 00:31:47.57\00:31:48.94 he's a substitutionary sacrifice 00:31:48.97\00:31:51.21 that He might deliver us from this present evil age. 00:31:51.24\00:31:56.14 So there he's showing us, it's Jesus came to deliver us 00:31:56.18\00:31:59.85 from the power of sin 00:31:59.88\00:32:02.08 according to the will of our God and Father. 00:32:02.12\00:32:06.99 So in just a few short words, he has summed up 00:32:07.02\00:32:10.53 the essence of the gospel right here. 00:32:10.56\00:32:13.50 That the central truth of the gospel 00:32:13.53\00:32:16.80 as salvation rests fully on Jesus Christ. 00:32:16.83\00:32:21.14 It's what he accomplished for us through His death 00:32:21.17\00:32:24.91 and through His resurrection. 00:32:24.94\00:32:27.24 And what that did for us? 00:32:27.28\00:32:29.81 Christ's death and resurrection did for us 00:32:29.84\00:32:32.91 something that we could never do for ourselves. 00:32:32.95\00:32:35.25 It broke the power of sin. Yes. 00:32:35.32\00:32:37.82 It broke the power of evil. Amen. 00:32:37.85\00:32:40.06 So as he's reflecting on this wonderful news 00:32:40.09\00:32:44.59 that the grace and peace that God gives us in Christ. 00:32:44.63\00:32:48.36 He then in verse 5, Paul just breaks out 00:32:48.40\00:32:51.53 into spontaneous praise, he says, 00:32:51.57\00:32:54.87 "To whom be glory forever and ever. 00:32:54.90\00:32:58.57 Amen." 00:32:58.61\00:33:00.21 And then he says, "I marvel Galatians 00:33:00.24\00:33:05.35 that you are turning away so soon from Him 00:33:05.38\00:33:08.28 who called you in the grace of Christ, 00:33:08.32\00:33:11.45 to a different gospel." 00:33:11.49\00:33:13.39 And any other gospel is not a gospel at all, 00:33:13.42\00:33:18.03 it's not good news at all. 00:33:18.06\00:33:20.90 That's true. 00:33:20.93\00:33:22.36 You know, and as I look at Wednesday's part 00:33:22.40\00:33:25.83 where our topic is no other gospel. 00:33:25.87\00:33:29.94 I think about the salutation we talked about 00:33:29.97\00:33:32.67 how Paul would introduce his letters. 00:33:32.71\00:33:36.54 And I compare that with to say that the governor 00:33:36.58\00:33:41.22 is going to send out a letter to the state employees 00:33:41.25\00:33:44.82 and at the top he's got his name 00:33:44.85\00:33:46.82 and he's got his title. 00:33:46.86\00:33:48.19 You know, this is who I am, 00:33:48.22\00:33:49.62 this is the authority that I have... 00:33:49.66\00:33:51.39 Absolutely. 00:33:51.43\00:33:52.79 And so that's what Paul was doing, 00:33:52.83\00:33:54.13 he was giving his qualifications. 00:33:54.20\00:33:55.53 Amen. 00:33:55.56\00:33:56.90 That he didn't get his power and elected body, you know, 00:33:56.93\00:34:00.44 but God had brought him to power. 00:34:00.47\00:34:03.27 And so these are his qualifications 00:34:03.30\00:34:04.94 his name and... 00:34:04.97\00:34:06.91 So in that salutation he always then said, 00:34:06.94\00:34:10.18 and I think God for you 00:34:10.21\00:34:12.31 because you've been such a blessing, 00:34:12.35\00:34:13.88 you've been so faithful, 00:34:13.92\00:34:15.25 and all of the other salutations. 00:34:15.28\00:34:18.05 But now we're gonna again to Galatians 1, 00:34:18.09\00:34:20.82 he changed very quickly on that, 00:34:20.86\00:34:22.82 his forceful personality that he has. 00:34:22.86\00:34:26.09 He says, "You know, enough with the niceties, 00:34:26.13\00:34:28.56 you've got a problem here and we need to address it." 00:34:28.60\00:34:30.33 Amen. 00:34:30.37\00:34:31.70 You know, he just really got down as they say 00:34:31.73\00:34:33.44 where the rubber meets the road. 00:34:33.47\00:34:35.37 You know, let's talk about the problems here. 00:34:35.40\00:34:38.01 And so this salutation was so different than the others 00:34:38.04\00:34:40.54 that he had, because he had something so strongly, 00:34:40.58\00:34:43.71 so forcefully on his mind. 00:34:43.75\00:34:46.68 And as we read there in Galatians 1:6 00:34:46.72\00:34:51.32 as you touched on, Shelley, he said, 00:34:51.35\00:34:54.22 "I marvel that you are turning away 00:34:54.26\00:34:56.32 so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, 00:34:56.36\00:35:00.83 to a different gospel." 00:35:00.86\00:35:03.77 Now he wasn't saying that there is another gospel, 00:35:03.80\00:35:07.07 he's just saying you've turned away from the gospel. 00:35:07.10\00:35:10.51 There's only one gospel, there's nothing else, 00:35:10.54\00:35:12.47 there's no place that we can turn. 00:35:12.54\00:35:14.21 There is the only one, so he wasn't saying 00:35:14.24\00:35:16.41 there is another gospel that you can turn to, 00:35:16.44\00:35:18.75 but he was saying, "I can't believe 00:35:18.78\00:35:20.35 that you've left the word so readily so quickly." 00:35:20.38\00:35:23.05 Amen. 00:35:23.08\00:35:24.79 And although Paul addressed all kinds of local challenges 00:35:24.82\00:35:28.12 and problems in the letters to his churches. 00:35:28.16\00:35:30.49 That's what he was doing. 00:35:30.53\00:35:31.89 Us, you know, we would just jump on a plane or a train 00:35:31.93\00:35:34.60 and we'd go over there and see those people, 00:35:34.63\00:35:36.80 but travel was so slow then, you know, 00:35:36.83\00:35:39.47 he would write letters to the churches 00:35:39.50\00:35:41.20 and send them here and send them there. 00:35:41.24\00:35:42.57 Aren't we glad he did? Aren't we glad? 00:35:42.64\00:35:44.37 Yeah. Amen. 00:35:44.41\00:35:45.74 You know, and you wonder how quick 00:35:45.81\00:35:47.14 was that communication or how slow was it? 00:35:47.18\00:35:49.08 The problem may have really gotten out of hand 00:35:49.11\00:35:51.75 before he actually heard about it 00:35:51.78\00:35:53.98 and addressed the situation. 00:35:54.02\00:35:55.92 So in this particular one in Galatians 1, 00:35:55.95\00:35:58.32 he comes on rather strongly. 00:35:58.35\00:36:00.19 Yes. That's how he deals with. 00:36:00.22\00:36:01.72 He says, "We don't have time, you know, to pamper." 00:36:01.76\00:36:06.06 So the situation in Galatia is so upsetting 00:36:06.09\00:36:10.17 that Paul omits the thanksgiving entirely 00:36:10.20\00:36:13.07 where he normally would praise people first. 00:36:13.10\00:36:15.34 I've heard it said before, Kenny, you know, 00:36:15.37\00:36:16.91 you've got to get him smiling 00:36:16.94\00:36:18.27 before you kick him in the teeth. 00:36:18.31\00:36:19.91 Yeah. Have you heard that? 00:36:19.94\00:36:21.28 Yeah. 00:36:21.31\00:36:22.68 I've also heard to when they... 00:36:22.71\00:36:24.05 Is like when your children, sometimes they need corrected. 00:36:24.08\00:36:26.48 Yeah. 00:36:26.51\00:36:27.85 You know, you start out and you can get many times 00:36:27.88\00:36:29.42 but you're talking about getting down to it 00:36:29.45\00:36:31.65 is you tell them you love them when you have the belt toss, 00:36:31.69\00:36:36.16 and you getting ready to use it, you tell them, 00:36:36.19\00:36:38.09 you love them, and have prayer with them, 00:36:38.13\00:36:40.46 and then you beat the daylights out of them. 00:36:40.50\00:36:42.56 We heard that this is gonna hurt you worse than me. 00:36:42.60\00:36:44.87 It's been me. But we never did believe it. 00:36:44.90\00:36:46.43 Well, get a good spanking. Yeah. 00:36:46.47\00:36:48.34 But so that's kind of the way Paul did 00:36:48.37\00:36:49.90 in our human thinking is your children, 00:36:49.94\00:36:52.11 you love them, you tell them you love them, 00:36:52.17\00:36:53.71 greet him first and tell him how much you love him. 00:36:53.74\00:36:55.58 But you still have a problem you mentioned. 00:36:55.64\00:36:57.71 Yes. 00:36:57.75\00:36:59.11 And you have to deal with that issue, get down to it. 00:36:59.15\00:37:01.92 It's got to be dealt with. Yes. 00:37:01.95\00:37:03.49 So that's what he did. 00:37:03.52\00:37:04.85 His strong personality was not inclined 00:37:04.89\00:37:08.09 by the Lord's leading to lets them things pass. 00:37:08.12\00:37:11.09 This is serious and it needs to be dealt with. 00:37:11.13\00:37:12.93 Yes. 00:37:12.96\00:37:14.30 And, of course, we're talking again, 00:37:14.30\00:37:15.66 we're getting back into the circumcision part of it. 00:37:15.70\00:37:18.63 And he says, "Why is that 00:37:18.67\00:37:20.00 you're pushing this on the gentiles?" 00:37:20.04\00:37:23.41 He says circumcision is nothing, 00:37:23.44\00:37:27.78 neither is male nor female 00:37:27.81\00:37:29.74 and he goes into neither is race, 00:37:29.78\00:37:31.65 neither is black or white, he said some of these things 00:37:31.68\00:37:33.78 you're trying to push on the gentiles 00:37:33.82\00:37:35.78 then they amount to hill of beans. 00:37:35.82\00:37:37.15 That's right. 00:37:37.19\00:37:38.52 Because they are not related to salvation 00:37:38.55\00:37:41.12 but he corrects them quickly, 00:37:41.16\00:37:42.92 Paul does not hold back anything. 00:37:42.96\00:37:44.96 Yes. He doesn't hold it back. 00:37:44.99\00:37:46.93 You know, I wonder why God called him, that's part of it. 00:37:46.96\00:37:49.53 Yes. 00:37:49.56\00:37:50.90 He's not a man that runs from the issues. 00:37:50.93\00:37:52.27 Good. 00:37:52.30\00:37:53.64 His personality is strong enough 00:37:53.67\00:37:55.00 that he will take the bull by the horns when necessary. 00:37:55.04\00:37:57.21 Amen. Yes. 00:37:57.24\00:37:59.37 And so he tells them, "I can't believe 00:37:59.44\00:38:03.11 that you are leaving the gospel so quickly." 00:38:03.18\00:38:06.88 And some of the original language points to the fact 00:38:06.92\00:38:10.29 that he's talking about deserting. 00:38:10.32\00:38:12.69 You know, we think about in the service a guy's gone AWOL. 00:38:12.75\00:38:15.92 You know, he's away without leave. 00:38:15.96\00:38:18.76 In other words he has deserted the troops. 00:38:18.79\00:38:20.63 Yeah. 00:38:20.66\00:38:21.96 And that's not gonna be good, you know, 00:38:22.00\00:38:23.87 but that's the connotations there of the original words 00:38:23.90\00:38:26.77 when he talks about, "Don't leave the gospel," 00:38:26.80\00:38:28.94 here he says. 00:38:28.97\00:38:30.31 It's like a soldier deserting the battle 00:38:30.34\00:38:33.94 and he's run to hide. 00:38:33.98\00:38:36.61 Verse 6 it talked about that. 00:38:36.64\00:38:39.68 And there he says, "I can't believe 00:38:39.71\00:38:41.05 that you've left so quickly." 00:38:41.08\00:38:42.85 You know, and I don't know how much time passed, 00:38:42.88\00:38:44.69 does anybody of us know how much time has passed? 00:38:44.72\00:38:47.26 But whatever it was he says, "You left very quickly." 00:38:47.29\00:38:50.43 I wonder what sort of hardships caused them to leave, 00:38:50.46\00:38:54.00 any thoughts. 00:38:54.03\00:38:55.36 I mean, we could apply this to today 00:38:55.40\00:38:56.73 in our churches, can we? 00:38:56.77\00:38:58.10 You know, the Judaizers when they should have... 00:38:58.13\00:39:00.44 I heard Dwight Nelson in a sermon say 00:39:00.47\00:39:04.27 that a seminary student had come to him to say 00:39:04.31\00:39:07.38 they were concerned about teaching some people 00:39:07.41\00:39:09.71 who would come to Andrews University. 00:39:09.74\00:39:12.01 Where they weren't invited by Andrews, 00:39:12.05\00:39:13.48 they weren't invited by the church, 00:39:13.52\00:39:17.52 they had been invited by students, 00:39:17.55\00:39:19.12 and these teachers were showing up 00:39:19.15\00:39:21.99 talking about the perfection, 00:39:22.02\00:39:23.73 talking about all of this obedience, 00:39:23.76\00:39:25.53 and in making it grace plus works. 00:39:25.56\00:39:29.63 And Dwight Nelson says, "We ought to be 00:39:29.70\00:39:33.60 really concerned about this." 00:39:33.64\00:39:35.74 But what happened, just think about the influence that has. 00:39:35.77\00:39:38.94 These are young Christians, they're gentiles, 00:39:38.97\00:39:41.54 so here they've heard Paul's message, 00:39:41.58\00:39:43.65 somebody comes along and says, 00:39:43.68\00:39:45.68 "Hey, he's not really an apostle, 00:39:45.75\00:39:48.95 there are 11 apostles who are still back here. 00:39:48.98\00:39:51.45 You know, we come from the mother church Jerusalem, 00:39:51.49\00:39:53.66 here we come, and this is what you've got to do." 00:39:53.69\00:39:56.93 So these people probably feared for their own salvation, 00:39:56.96\00:39:59.86 they thought they're learning more, 00:39:59.93\00:40:02.46 they didn't realize they had heard the full gospel. 00:40:02.50\00:40:05.13 Sometimes our church get so oriented, 00:40:05.17\00:40:09.10 works oriented that we wonder 00:40:09.14\00:40:11.51 how far are you gonna to take this? 00:40:11.54\00:40:14.88 When I first pastored the church was in Arkansas 00:40:14.91\00:40:17.38 and I met with the Arkansas, Louisiana Conference President. 00:40:17.41\00:40:20.62 And he said, "I've got two churches, 00:40:20.65\00:40:21.98 I want you to visit these two churches and decide 00:40:22.02\00:40:24.22 which one that you would accept. 00:40:24.25\00:40:26.76 Bless his heart. Yeah. 00:40:26.79\00:40:28.46 He gave me a choice. 00:40:28.49\00:40:29.82 And I did, I went to see them both, you know. 00:40:29.86\00:40:31.96 But he said, "I'll give you these quick synopses 00:40:31.99\00:40:34.73 of the two churches." 00:40:34.76\00:40:36.13 He said, "This one down in certain place 00:40:36.16\00:40:38.50 there in Arkansas," he said, 00:40:38.53\00:40:40.00 "If you go to potluck dinner there," 00:40:40.04\00:40:41.70 he said, "You may see fried chicken on the table." 00:40:41.74\00:40:44.87 He said, "But if you go to the other one 00:40:44.91\00:40:46.64 that I'm sending you to, he said, survey them." 00:40:46.68\00:40:50.35 He said, "When you go to the potluck dinner, 00:40:50.38\00:40:52.18 the fellowship lunch," he said, 00:40:52.21\00:40:53.72 "It will not only be vegetarian, 00:40:53.75\00:40:55.68 it will be vegan vegetarian." 00:40:55.75\00:40:57.09 Go on. 00:40:57.12\00:40:58.45 You know, and I remember and that's the church 00:40:58.49\00:40:59.95 I ended up at, you know. 00:41:00.06\00:41:01.89 I can remember talking to Brother Jim Gilley about it 00:41:01.92\00:41:05.06 before I ever went there and Jim said, 00:41:05.09\00:41:07.00 "You being a Shelton, he said, 00:41:07.03\00:41:09.03 I think you should go to the conservative church." 00:41:09.06\00:41:11.17 So that's where I ended up in Decatur, Arkansas. 00:41:11.20\00:41:15.34 But anyway when we went to that church, 00:41:15.37\00:41:17.47 they were exactly right on the fellowship lunches, 00:41:17.51\00:41:20.28 there was signs on everyone that said vegan or not vegan, 00:41:20.31\00:41:23.85 all the food was labeled on the table, you know. 00:41:23.88\00:41:27.55 And I can remember one time giving the sermon there 00:41:27.58\00:41:30.05 and not naming any names but I gave a sermon on grace. 00:41:30.09\00:41:34.36 And when I got done we're shaking hands, 00:41:34.39\00:41:36.73 one of the elders passed me and he said, 00:41:36.76\00:41:38.73 "You should have told them the rest of the story." 00:41:38.76\00:41:40.96 And I said, "What rest of the story?" 00:41:40.96\00:41:42.93 You know, I said, "We are saved by grace." 00:41:43.00\00:41:45.30 He said, "You should have told them about works." 00:41:45.33\00:41:48.84 And sometimes we get caught up into that so much 00:41:48.87\00:41:52.24 that it's grace plus works that's only get us there. 00:41:52.27\00:41:55.44 Sometimes, you know, that's the road we go down, 00:41:55.48\00:41:58.65 but we find it really that the apostle says, 00:41:58.68\00:42:01.95 "That we are saved by grace through faith. 00:42:01.98\00:42:05.39 It is a gift of God, not of works, 00:42:05.42\00:42:08.99 lest of any us should boast." 00:42:09.02\00:42:10.46 Amen. 00:42:10.49\00:42:12.23 You know, and once you've been brought up that way, 00:42:12.26\00:42:14.13 we were brought up in that sort of a Church, 00:42:14.20\00:42:17.00 rather strict, you know, rather conservative. 00:42:17.03\00:42:20.10 And sometimes it's hard to get any other thinking, 00:42:20.14\00:42:22.74 you know, that we too one day 00:42:22.77\00:42:25.11 when we look at how it's really done, 00:42:25.14\00:42:27.04 we say, you know, we are saved by grace 00:42:27.08\00:42:29.88 and not by our works. 00:42:29.91\00:42:31.25 And any time we throw in works into the equation 00:42:31.28\00:42:33.85 what have we done, we polluted the equation, haven't we? 00:42:33.88\00:42:37.19 Yes, but I do. 00:42:37.22\00:42:38.65 I wanna say this, we're saved by grace through faith 00:42:38.69\00:42:43.36 for the good works. 00:42:43.39\00:42:44.83 Ephesians 2:10 says that, 00:42:44.86\00:42:46.26 "God prepared in advance for us to do." 00:42:46.33\00:42:49.70 In Hebrew 7:20 it talks about, 00:42:49.76\00:42:53.74 "Jesus becoming a priest by oath." 00:42:53.77\00:42:57.61 And then in verse 22 it says, 00:42:57.64\00:42:59.87 "He is our surety of the new covenant." 00:42:59.91\00:43:04.81 Which that word means, He is our guarantor. 00:43:04.85\00:43:08.52 Christ guaranties all of God's promises are ours through Him. 00:43:08.55\00:43:12.92 Yes and amen. 00:43:12.99\00:43:14.32 But He also guaranties God that... 00:43:14.36\00:43:18.09 It's not us but that He will work in us to will 00:43:18.13\00:43:21.56 and to do His good pleasure. 00:43:21.60\00:43:23.30 So that we don't obey to be saved. 00:43:23.37\00:43:26.90 Yes. 00:43:26.94\00:43:28.27 But when Christ lives in our heart, 00:43:28.30\00:43:31.54 we walk in obedience, 00:43:31.57\00:43:32.91 so there's nothing to do with salvation, 00:43:32.97\00:43:34.88 it's our expression, 00:43:34.91\00:43:36.95 our response of joy and appreciation. 00:43:36.98\00:43:40.02 And we can say in closing out this section, 00:43:40.05\00:43:41.68 we are saved by works, His works. 00:43:41.72\00:43:43.79 Amen. Not my own. 00:43:43.82\00:43:45.22 Brother? No, I mean, that's good. 00:43:45.25\00:43:46.96 We need a balance. 00:43:46.99\00:43:48.72 You know, sometime in Adventism 00:43:48.76\00:43:50.16 is very difficult to get a balance 00:43:50.23\00:43:52.89 because faith and works do go together, 00:43:52.93\00:43:56.13 Paul made that very plain. 00:43:56.16\00:43:57.87 But again not as a means of salvation. 00:43:57.90\00:43:59.70 That's right. 00:43:59.73\00:44:01.14 In Adventism we're some of the worst 00:44:01.17\00:44:03.04 in the whole world, 00:44:03.07\00:44:04.47 you know, I was raised one, I am one, 00:44:04.51\00:44:06.37 even though we've had people who say, 00:44:06.41\00:44:07.74 "Well, you're not a real Seventh-day Adventist." 00:44:07.78\00:44:09.68 And I say, "Somebody get off the platform know about me." 00:44:09.74\00:44:12.38 And I'll first right back with them. 00:44:12.41\00:44:13.88 There is a platform that we have to stand 00:44:13.92\00:44:15.65 on platform of truth. 00:44:15.68\00:44:17.35 And if we're not standing on that platform of truth, 00:44:17.39\00:44:19.35 we're down inspecting all the little pegs down 00:44:19.39\00:44:21.59 in bottom we're in trouble. 00:44:21.62\00:44:23.43 We need to be just studying and reading the word. 00:44:23.46\00:44:25.03 Well, anyway Thursday's lesson is the origin of Paul's gospel. 00:44:25.06\00:44:29.36 I thought it was very interesting 00:44:29.43\00:44:30.77 because it again reiterates some of the things 00:44:30.80\00:44:32.47 we've talked about last week's lesson 00:44:32.50\00:44:34.57 and in this week's lesson. 00:44:34.60\00:44:36.47 It starts out with troublemakers. 00:44:36.50\00:44:38.47 And I don't know if any of you here been 00:44:38.51\00:44:40.91 called the troublemaker, I have. 00:44:40.94\00:44:42.91 And probably... 00:44:42.94\00:44:44.28 Listen, if you follow Jesus Christ 00:44:44.31\00:44:47.88 and you preach the message that God has given you, 00:44:47.92\00:44:51.42 this church to give to the world 00:44:51.45\00:44:53.42 you will be at one time 00:44:53.46\00:44:54.82 or the other labeled a trouble maker 00:44:54.86\00:44:56.52 and you don't know what you're talking about. 00:44:56.59\00:44:58.63 Look what they called Jesus, 00:44:58.66\00:45:00.06 look what they called the disciple, 00:45:00.13\00:45:01.43 look what they did to Paul. 00:45:01.46\00:45:02.80 So I said, "Paul, you're a trouble maker 00:45:02.83\00:45:04.43 and all you want to do basically 00:45:04.47\00:45:05.80 you want to get along with everybody, 00:45:05.83\00:45:07.17 you want the approval of everybody else." 00:45:07.20\00:45:09.47 You know, this guy is most unlikely one 00:45:09.50\00:45:13.14 in the world as far as I'm concerned 00:45:13.17\00:45:14.64 that worried about compromising with somebody 00:45:14.68\00:45:16.85 when it comes to the gospel. 00:45:16.91\00:45:18.25 Yeah. 00:45:18.28\00:45:19.61 He didn't worry about the approval of men, 00:45:19.65\00:45:21.42 he's worried about the approval of God. 00:45:21.45\00:45:23.15 So what did Paul do? 00:45:23.18\00:45:25.22 He confronted everybody's talked about it, legalism, 00:45:25.25\00:45:28.96 he confronted it in the Galatians church 00:45:28.99\00:45:31.59 and he was hit hard on every side. 00:45:31.63\00:45:34.50 He never but they came back around and they said, 00:45:34.56\00:45:37.27 "Man, you wanna compromise 00:45:37.30\00:45:38.90 and you're not really giving the gospel." 00:45:38.93\00:45:40.97 They said things about him that were not true, 00:45:41.00\00:45:43.34 which in Adventism 00:45:43.37\00:45:44.71 if you're preaching the real truth, 00:45:44.74\00:45:46.07 people will say things that really are not true. 00:45:46.11\00:45:49.08 And so we had to be known for sure go back to the word, 00:45:49.11\00:45:51.55 see what it says and stay in it. 00:45:51.58\00:45:53.05 I'm sure Paul did it. 00:45:53.08\00:45:54.72 I think, Pastor John, I think, Dinzey, 00:45:54.75\00:45:57.85 I think you mentioned one time about 00:45:57.89\00:45:59.82 and the changing of the gospel. 00:45:59.89\00:46:02.29 Paul basically said one time, 00:46:02.32\00:46:04.19 "I'm shocked that you've changed gospel, 00:46:04.23\00:46:08.43 you've changed leaders, you've accepted a salvation 00:46:08.46\00:46:12.27 that talks about here by works." 00:46:12.30\00:46:14.54 Another word there he said, "Who conned you? 00:46:14.57\00:46:17.71 Who gave you some, you know, theological slide of hand 00:46:17.74\00:46:21.78 that somehow they took you off the mark?" 00:46:21.81\00:46:26.01 Somebody mentioned foolish. 00:46:26.05\00:46:28.18 He said, "Why would you get upfront, 00:46:28.22\00:46:30.42 you're preaching bunch of foolish people?" 00:46:30.45\00:46:32.35 Well, everybody get up and leave I guess. 00:46:32.39\00:46:34.52 You know, but again he came down 00:46:34.56\00:46:36.56 and he cleared the terms and this is being said 00:46:36.59\00:46:39.09 because they confronted him as one 00:46:39.13\00:46:41.33 who wanted to compromise, who just wanted to get along 00:46:41.36\00:46:44.33 and wanted approval of other folks. 00:46:44.37\00:46:47.04 Somebody mentioned here, he said, 00:46:47.07\00:46:48.57 "Who has bewitched you?" 00:46:48.60\00:46:50.97 In other words, the devil got a hold of you. 00:46:51.01\00:46:52.91 Devil's got hold and changed things here. 00:46:52.97\00:46:55.01 Who's maligned you? 00:46:55.04\00:46:56.44 Who's given you this false information? 00:46:56.48\00:46:59.11 And so he's calling us back to the one 00:46:59.15\00:47:01.75 and only gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:47:01.78\00:47:04.09 If anyone in the world you see was not worried 00:47:04.12\00:47:06.69 about the approval of others, it was Paul. 00:47:06.72\00:47:09.36 How could we say? 00:47:09.39\00:47:10.76 If you allow me to 2 Corinthians 11, 00:47:10.79\00:47:13.13 I know I can't read it because of our time verses like 00:47:13.16\00:47:15.46 23 through 28. 00:47:15.50\00:47:18.50 It goes in here Paul saying here, "Okay, why?" 00:47:18.53\00:47:21.87 He said, "Five times I got 39 lashes." 00:47:21.90\00:47:26.27 None of us want it one time, let alone five, 00:47:26.31\00:47:29.04 if you got it one time, you say, 00:47:29.08\00:47:30.45 "No, I'm gonna avoid it the rest of the time." 00:47:30.48\00:47:32.68 Some of things you've been through in life, 00:47:32.71\00:47:34.18 you didn't realize how difficult it was 00:47:34.22\00:47:36.69 until you went through it, and then you said, 00:47:36.72\00:47:39.49 "I don't wanna go through that." 00:47:39.55\00:47:41.36 you know, and then he talks about here he said, 00:47:41.39\00:47:44.19 "Three times I was beaten with rods." 00:47:44.23\00:47:46.53 Why? 00:47:46.59\00:47:47.93 Because he wouldn't comprise the truth. 00:47:47.96\00:47:49.26 Yes. 00:47:49.30\00:47:50.63 He suffered because he loved Jesus, 00:47:50.67\00:47:52.00 he loved the truth. 00:47:52.03\00:47:53.37 He said, "There was dangers from robbers, 00:47:53.40\00:47:55.44 I've been stoned." 00:47:55.47\00:47:57.24 He even said there is dangers from... 00:47:57.27\00:47:59.21 He talks about the gentiles, the danger from the wilderness. 00:47:59.24\00:48:03.68 False brethren and he said hunger and thirst. 00:48:03.71\00:48:06.51 So he went through all of these things 00:48:06.55\00:48:08.12 because part of his gospel was, He had to preach and teach 00:48:08.15\00:48:11.82 what God ask him to give to the world 00:48:11.85\00:48:14.09 and to the gentiles. 00:48:14.12\00:48:15.46 And he did that, thank God for that. 00:48:15.49\00:48:17.96 I thought about this, I thought interesting. 00:48:17.99\00:48:20.20 You know, at first Paul was on what? 00:48:20.23\00:48:22.70 His, a trip to destroy. 00:48:22.73\00:48:25.33 That's what he did, I'm going on mission, 00:48:25.37\00:48:26.80 I'm going to destroy. 00:48:26.84\00:48:28.17 Conversion came, he's gonna go give the gospel 00:48:28.20\00:48:30.84 of Jesus Christ, he's gonna give life, 00:48:30.87\00:48:33.44 or he been given death as it were before. 00:48:33.48\00:48:35.94 And then we see there that he... 00:48:35.98\00:48:37.61 People who heard him were convinced 00:48:37.65\00:48:41.15 that there was a power that accompanied his words. 00:48:41.18\00:48:44.52 Like there should be with any over here 00:48:44.55\00:48:46.62 who's preaching or teaching, 00:48:46.65\00:48:48.16 there should be an anointing of the Holy Spirit upon 00:48:48.19\00:48:50.93 what he said is not just how, 00:48:50.96\00:48:52.59 you know, smart we are 00:48:52.63\00:48:54.03 and how we wanna make things rhythm 00:48:54.10\00:48:55.66 and rhyme and carry on. 00:48:55.70\00:48:57.33 But it's what said in simplicity 00:48:57.37\00:49:00.24 that the Holy Spirit takes and you feel it inside, 00:49:00.27\00:49:03.10 that is the truth walk in it. 00:49:03.14\00:49:05.74 Preaching and teaching 00:49:05.77\00:49:07.14 the real gospel of Jesus Christ will do... 00:49:07.18\00:49:10.95 To me this is very simple 00:49:10.98\00:49:12.31 but it will do one or two things. 00:49:12.35\00:49:13.88 If you're really preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, 00:49:13.92\00:49:16.45 you will find that it will change your life completely, 00:49:16.48\00:49:19.02 number one. 00:49:19.05\00:49:20.42 It will change your life completely. 00:49:20.46\00:49:21.86 If you do not accept that change 00:49:21.89\00:49:23.99 and go in that direction, you will turn on the gospel, 00:49:24.03\00:49:27.36 you'll turn on Jesus Christ, you'll turn on the messenger, 00:49:27.40\00:49:31.23 and you'll try to crucify the messenger along with it 00:49:31.27\00:49:33.67 or his character or her character 00:49:33.70\00:49:35.20 whatever it might be. 00:49:35.24\00:49:36.64 So it will makes you look little bit better 00:49:36.67\00:49:38.34 and nullify what they just tried 00:49:38.37\00:49:40.44 to bring across as is truth. 00:49:40.51\00:49:43.08 The Jews hated Paul just exactly 00:49:43.11\00:49:47.05 the way they hated Jesus Christ. 00:49:47.08\00:49:48.92 Their hate went on by dislike, they hated him. 00:49:48.95\00:49:52.55 And it became so bad so quickly, 00:49:52.59\00:49:54.69 there's a word, Paul had to scoot doodle. 00:49:54.72\00:49:56.86 Yeah. He had to leave town. 00:49:56.89\00:49:58.69 He had to get out of the town. 00:49:58.73\00:50:00.06 Jesus did two, three times. Exactly. 00:50:00.13\00:50:01.66 He was run out of town, you know as it were 00:50:01.70\00:50:04.47 because he was doing what? 00:50:04.50\00:50:06.33 Because he was preaching 00:50:06.37\00:50:07.70 the real gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:50:07.74\00:50:10.51 That's what happened to him. 00:50:10.54\00:50:12.04 Now it wasn't so bad necessarily, 00:50:12.07\00:50:15.41 it gave him time that we talked about before to reflect, 00:50:15.44\00:50:18.45 it gave him time to pray, it gave him time 00:50:18.48\00:50:21.52 to commune with God to search his own heart, 00:50:21.55\00:50:25.35 to see where the changes need to take place. 00:50:25.39\00:50:27.92 Remember, and someone brought this out 00:50:27.96\00:50:29.82 part of the lesson, he was not chosen by man, 00:50:29.86\00:50:34.56 he was chosen by God. 00:50:34.56\00:50:37.27 And you know what? 00:50:37.30\00:50:38.63 When God chooses you, you cannot be defeated, 00:50:38.67\00:50:41.60 you cannot be defeated. 00:50:41.64\00:50:42.97 If God chooses you to do something 00:50:43.00\00:50:44.34 and you're faithful to Him, no matter what man says, 00:50:44.37\00:50:46.94 no matter what man does, 00:50:46.98\00:50:48.34 no matter how they try to blackball you... 00:50:48.38\00:50:50.55 And people will do that even among ourself. 00:50:50.58\00:50:53.08 We'll try to blackball somebody else 00:50:53.11\00:50:54.72 that's doing actually a good work. 00:50:54.75\00:50:57.05 I'll be careful with this, and we need to mind 00:50:57.09\00:50:58.52 our own business and stay in tune with God 00:50:58.55\00:51:00.32 and do what He ask us to do and let everybody else 00:51:00.39\00:51:03.29 kind of match up where God has you. 00:51:03.36\00:51:04.76 Now talking about that calling, Brother. 00:51:04.79\00:51:07.10 Jesus actually made these statements, 00:51:07.13\00:51:08.46 when He's talking about disciples. 00:51:08.50\00:51:10.03 He said, "Don't you know, He said, you didn't choose me, 00:51:10.07\00:51:12.67 I chose you." 00:51:12.70\00:51:14.04 Yes. Right. 00:51:14.07\00:51:15.40 Jesus chose those who were going to be disciples. 00:51:15.44\00:51:16.77 Amen. Yes. 00:51:16.81\00:51:18.14 And so the calling is on the person 00:51:18.17\00:51:19.51 you're talking about. 00:51:19.54\00:51:20.88 It's on the person. 00:51:20.91\00:51:22.24 And bless his heart, Paul assumed. 00:51:22.28\00:51:24.01 This one time Paul assumed. 00:51:24.05\00:51:25.55 He assumed when conversion came 00:51:25.58\00:51:27.82 that his family and friends were going to just love him. 00:51:27.85\00:51:32.49 How many of us, you assumed when you accepted the truth, 00:51:32.52\00:51:36.39 you're joyful with it, but family and friends 00:51:36.42\00:51:38.56 and everybody gonna love it. 00:51:38.59\00:51:40.16 They're gonna be happy because you did. 00:51:40.20\00:51:42.20 They weren't happy, you know, the apostles weren't happy, 00:51:42.23\00:51:45.37 the disciples were happy to begin with 00:51:45.40\00:51:47.44 because they just couldn't believe 00:51:47.47\00:51:48.80 what was taken place 00:51:48.84\00:51:51.41 and when he preached with power, 00:51:51.44\00:51:53.21 he had to flee like from Damascus. 00:51:53.24\00:51:55.14 He had to as it run for flee. 00:51:55.18\00:51:57.58 Of course, God would had it all certainly in the plan. 00:51:57.61\00:52:00.65 He went to Jerusalem and then what he did do? 00:52:00.72\00:52:03.59 No one want to accept him so I go to Jerusalem, 00:52:03.62\00:52:05.65 I meet up with my brothers, I meet up with the disciples, 00:52:05.69\00:52:07.86 they'll love me. 00:52:07.89\00:52:09.22 Well, they didn't love him either. 00:52:09.26\00:52:10.63 I mean, you talk about rejection. 00:52:10.69\00:52:13.36 Think about it, you're follower Jesus Christ, I guarantee you, 00:52:13.40\00:52:16.90 you'll have to face rejection. 00:52:16.93\00:52:18.80 Yeah. 00:52:18.83\00:52:20.17 I guarantee you, you'll have to face times that you feel 00:52:20.20\00:52:22.80 and you know better. 00:52:22.84\00:52:24.27 And I know better that you're almost all alone. 00:52:24.31\00:52:27.98 That you're worried about maybe where's the other 7,000, 00:52:28.01\00:52:29.98 you just... 00:52:30.01\00:52:31.35 It's just that's the way it is sometimes you get that feeling 00:52:31.38\00:52:33.98 and I think God reminds me sometime that's the way 00:52:34.05\00:52:36.62 it will be more is to come before I come. 00:52:36.65\00:52:38.69 Amen. 00:52:38.72\00:52:40.09 There maybe no one else, 00:52:40.12\00:52:41.46 there will be cold to warm at... 00:52:41.49\00:52:43.59 I have to gain warmness from the coldness of others 00:52:43.66\00:52:47.13 as it were. 00:52:47.23\00:52:48.53 So the time is coming we have to be able 00:52:48.56\00:52:49.90 to face that everybody is not going to pad us on the back, 00:52:49.96\00:52:53.23 not everybody is gonna love you, 00:52:53.27\00:52:54.84 not everybody is gonna appreciate the work 00:52:54.87\00:52:56.71 that God has called you to do. 00:52:56.74\00:52:58.17 But make sure God has called you, 00:52:58.21\00:52:59.77 make sure you do what God has asked you to do. 00:52:59.81\00:53:02.34 Remember, He went to Jerusalem, 00:53:02.38\00:53:05.11 they didn't want to deal With him either. 00:53:05.15\00:53:07.58 So what did he do? You think he just gave up. 00:53:07.62\00:53:09.72 You know, man of comprise and man what? 00:53:09.75\00:53:11.62 Absolutely. 00:53:11.65\00:53:13.29 That word did not entered Paul's mind, 00:53:13.32\00:53:15.39 I'm a giver up and I'm just gonna quit. 00:53:15.42\00:53:17.26 He never did it. 00:53:17.29\00:53:18.86 I wish we had time, we don't have. 00:53:18.89\00:53:20.23 Galatians 1:6-9. 00:53:20.26\00:53:21.63 As somebody mentioned here quickly another gospel. 00:53:21.66\00:53:25.00 Remember, if it's not the true gospel, 00:53:25.03\00:53:26.94 it is a false gospel. 00:53:26.97\00:53:28.30 There is no such thing as I got a gospel, 00:53:28.34\00:53:29.94 he's got a gospel, 00:53:30.01\00:53:31.34 she's got a gospel, we all have a gospel. 00:53:31.37\00:53:33.71 To me there is no such thing. 00:53:33.78\00:53:35.11 There is one gospel of Jesus Christ and the truth 00:53:35.14\00:53:38.58 and Paul stayed right with that all together. 00:53:38.61\00:53:41.55 There is no gospel as were the gospel 00:53:41.58\00:53:44.09 that doesn't have the good news in it, 00:53:44.12\00:53:46.12 good news of salvation. 00:53:46.15\00:53:47.92 Not of works but salvation 00:53:47.96\00:53:49.82 through grace through Jesus Christ. 00:53:49.86\00:53:51.86 And we need to get that if anybody does, 00:53:51.89\00:53:53.83 Adventist need to get that through our head 00:53:53.90\00:53:55.53 even including the seventh day Sabbath, 00:53:55.56\00:53:58.03 you know, it is kind of, 00:53:58.07\00:53:59.40 if we keep it, we're gonna be safe. 00:53:59.43\00:54:00.84 That's still work orientated. 00:54:00.87\00:54:02.20 That's right. Yeah. 00:54:02.24\00:54:03.57 But praise the God for the word. 00:54:03.64\00:54:05.04 Thank God for the obedience to that. 00:54:05.07\00:54:06.88 So... Go ahead. 00:54:06.91\00:54:08.24 You know, I just had to say one thing 00:54:08.28\00:54:09.61 that is interesting because here he says 00:54:09.64\00:54:11.28 in verse 11 and 12, 00:54:11.31\00:54:13.42 he didn't receive this gospel from man, 00:54:13.45\00:54:16.15 he didn't have to go study under a man. 00:54:16.18\00:54:18.35 He got it as direct revelation from Jesus Christ 00:54:18.39\00:54:21.49 and then he makes this statement 00:54:21.52\00:54:23.96 where he says, "If anybody, even an angel 00:54:24.03\00:54:26.93 from heaven comes and preaches any other gospel to you, 00:54:27.00\00:54:32.23 let him be accursed." 00:54:32.27\00:54:34.54 That's pretty strong language. Yes, it is. 00:54:34.57\00:54:36.60 That's pretty strong language. Amen and beautiful. 00:54:36.67\00:54:38.37 It is very strong language. 00:54:38.41\00:54:39.74 You know, as Paul brings 00:54:39.77\00:54:45.38 this message to the Galatians. 00:54:45.41\00:54:48.58 We see here that he is, as it was mentioned 00:54:48.62\00:54:51.62 he's bringing to the people that he is an apostle 00:54:51.65\00:54:54.92 not by men but by God. 00:54:54.96\00:54:57.83 And so interestingly enough in those days 00:54:57.86\00:55:01.00 they were trying everything they could 00:55:01.03\00:55:02.70 to discredit the true gospel. 00:55:02.73\00:55:04.93 Yes. 00:55:04.97\00:55:06.30 And so what we have here is that there were false teachers, 00:55:06.33\00:55:10.47 they could not contradict the doctrine of Paul 00:55:10.51\00:55:13.68 because it was biblically sound. 00:55:13.74\00:55:16.34 So then they attack something. 00:55:16.38\00:55:18.31 "Well, wait a minute, who are you? 00:55:18.35\00:55:19.88 You're not the one of the apostles." 00:55:19.91\00:55:22.08 So he is saying, "I am an apostle 00:55:22.12\00:55:25.09 not because of men but by God." 00:55:25.12\00:55:27.32 Amen. 00:55:27.36\00:55:28.69 And so this is a powerful thing to understand 00:55:28.72\00:55:31.09 that when he knows his credentials come from God 00:55:31.13\00:55:35.60 what the people are saying should not lead Paul astray, 00:55:35.63\00:55:40.77 he maintains a firm hold on the truth of the Lord. 00:55:40.80\00:55:44.24 Amen. 00:55:44.27\00:55:45.61 And I praise the Lord that the way that Shelley said it, 00:55:45.64\00:55:49.44 that if others bring you another gospel, 00:55:49.48\00:55:51.98 even if it's an angel, 00:55:52.01\00:55:54.25 because he taught them the true gospel. 00:55:54.28\00:55:55.88 Even if it's an angel, he said, 00:55:55.92\00:55:57.95 "Don't believe it, don't accept it." 00:55:57.99\00:55:59.65 And as it was mentioned every wind of doctrine 00:55:59.69\00:56:02.66 will be blowing and it is important 00:56:02.69\00:56:05.63 for God's children in these last days 00:56:05.66\00:56:07.76 to be savviest or understand what the Bible says 00:56:07.83\00:56:14.30 because it is able to make us wise unto salvation. 00:56:14.37\00:56:16.97 Yes. 00:56:17.04\00:56:18.37 So put away those little other devices 00:56:18.41\00:56:21.44 that are not the gospel, those fictitious stories, 00:56:21.48\00:56:26.98 and the novels, and the comic books, 00:56:27.05\00:56:30.72 and get to real Bible study. 00:56:30.75\00:56:32.55 Amen. 00:56:32.59\00:56:33.92 In the Book of Galatians we have a powerful message 00:56:33.99\00:56:36.06 for all of us. 00:56:36.09\00:56:37.46 And Paul is bringing... 00:56:37.49\00:56:39.49 I like to bring this verse once again, 00:56:39.53\00:56:41.00 "Paul an apostle not of men, 00:56:41.03\00:56:42.53 neither by men but by Jesus Christ 00:56:42.56\00:56:44.60 and God the Father who raised him from the dead." 00:56:44.63\00:56:47.47 Brothers and sisters, we encourage you 00:56:47.54\00:56:49.20 to get the Bible Study Guide. 00:56:49.24\00:56:51.34 It's the Adult Bible Study Guide, 00:56:51.37\00:56:53.61 you can go to ABSG, that's what it stands for, 00:56:53.68\00:56:56.21 Adult Bible study Guide, 00:56:56.24\00:56:57.58 ABSG.Adventist.org, 00:56:57.65\00:57:01.68 and there you can download for free 00:57:01.72\00:57:04.22 and I and I like that. 00:57:04.25\00:57:05.59 For free this Bible study so that you can have it 00:57:05.62\00:57:08.89 in your home, Galatians, and this is a study 00:57:08.92\00:57:11.66 that we will be continuing. 00:57:11.69\00:57:13.40 I think this is lesson number two. 00:57:13.43\00:57:15.00 There are 11 more and we want you to blessed 00:57:15.03\00:57:17.67 and we hope you have been blessed 00:57:17.70\00:57:19.03 during this program because this is our prayer, 00:57:19.07\00:57:21.87 we all pray a lot, study a lot to bring this to you. 00:57:21.90\00:57:26.07 And we encourage you to do the same 00:57:26.11\00:57:27.68 that as you study God's Word, you will get closer to Jesus 00:57:27.71\00:57:30.58 and understand that it is He who has called you 00:57:30.65\00:57:32.78 and He wants you to follow Jesus 00:57:32.81\00:57:34.78 with all of your heart. 00:57:34.82\00:57:36.15 Amen. 00:57:36.18\00:57:37.52
