The Bible tells us
00:00:01.33\00:00:02.66
Hello and welcome to
3ABN Sabbath School Panel
00:00:31.86\00:00:34.93
We encourage you to get your
Bibles, get a pencil and paper
00:00:34.93\00:00:39.23
and follow along as we study
the Adult Bible Study Guide
00:00:39.27\00:00:44.17
and this quarter we're looking
at the First and Second Epistles
00:00:44.24\00:00:49.28
of Peter, it's called Feed
My Sheep. Today we are going to
00:00:49.31\00:00:53.45
look at lesson 8, Jesus
in the Writings of Peter.
00:00:53.48\00:00:57.79
One thing that I appreciate
so much about the First Epistle
00:00:57.82\00:01:01.56
of Peter is that you see Christ
throughout. Peter's focus is
00:01:01.59\00:01:07.03
on Jesus Christ and he
does lift Him high. And if you
00:01:07.10\00:01:10.83
do not have one of these
quarterlies, you can go to the
00:01:10.90\00:01:15.30
website of the
General Conference of SDAs
00:01:15.34\00:01:18.47
and download these
lessons. Their website is
00:01:18.51\00:01:23.61
absg - Adult Bible
Study Guide absg.adventist.org
00:01:23.68\00:01:31.09
So that is absg.adventist.org
and we encourage you to do that
00:01:31.12\00:01:37.79
and to follow along. I believe
you will be blessed in what the
00:01:37.83\00:01:41.73
Lord will be
sharing through us today.
00:01:41.76\00:01:44.10
Let me introduce our Panel,
great friends of mine, each
00:01:44.17\00:01:49.47
and every one of them great
people, great Christians and
00:01:49.50\00:01:52.74
first I have Molly Steenson and
Molly is the Vice President and
00:01:52.77\00:01:57.18
General Manager of 3ABN.
Thank you for being here.
00:01:57.25\00:02:00.12
We have Pr. Tom Ferguson from
the Marion Illinois District
00:02:00.18\00:02:04.02
Pr. Tom, thank you for being
here. And then my dear sister
00:02:04.05\00:02:08.22
Jill Morikone who is Assistant
to the President. I can just
00:02:08.26\00:02:14.36
give you, I'm
just going to give you
00:02:14.40\00:02:18.33
what am I giving you? Promotion.
Promotion, I was trying to say
00:02:18.37\00:02:21.27
raise, but that wasn't right
either. But that will work for
00:02:21.30\00:02:24.47
you Jill. Well the raise
works but not the promotion.
00:02:24.51\00:02:28.28
Not my day. And then we
have John Dinzey with us who is
00:02:29.21\00:02:33.62
the General Manager of our
Latino channel. So thank you
00:02:33.65\00:02:36.65
so much, each and
every one of you for joining
00:02:36.69\00:02:39.82
and to this panel and this
study. What I'd like to do is
00:02:39.85\00:02:43.53
Tom please rescue me, we
need some prayer, would you say
00:02:43.56\00:02:46.90
a prayer before we start.
Heavenly Father, thank you
00:02:46.93\00:02:51.13
for the opportunity to break
bread together. Thank you for
00:02:51.17\00:02:54.80
the opportunity to read
an Epistle, a letter that was
00:02:54.84\00:02:58.01
written by a man that needed
desperately to know the inner
00:02:58.04\00:03:03.65
mind of God. But as we watched
his journey throughout the
00:03:03.68\00:03:07.98
New Testament we see him
writing these letters which are
00:03:08.02\00:03:11.92
anointed with Your Holy Spirit.
So Lord anoint a second time.
00:03:11.95\00:03:16.66
As we read these words may
we hear from You. Speak through
00:03:16.69\00:03:20.90
the Panel, speak to each
and every heart that is watching
00:03:20.93\00:03:23.83
or listening, in
Jesus' name. Amen, Amen.
00:03:23.87\00:03:28.27
So our memory text for
this week is 1 Peter 2:24. We're
00:03:28.60\00:03:33.44
going to be reading from
the New King James Version
00:03:33.48\00:03:36.78
and we're going to say it
together. Why don't you join us
00:03:36.81\00:03:40.28
Who Himself bore our sins
in His own body on the tree
00:03:41.88\00:03:47.52
that we having died to sin
might live for righteousness
00:03:47.56\00:03:53.19
by whose
stripes you were healed.
00:03:53.23\00:03:56.46
And that's one of my favorite
verses in the entire New
00:03:56.50\00:04:00.37
Testament, I believe. As I
said Peter's Epistle focuses on
00:04:00.44\00:04:04.67
Christ from first to
last. He shows us Christ's great
00:04:04.71\00:04:08.74
suffering and speaks of that
as an example for us. He speaks
00:04:08.78\00:04:14.58
about Christ's divine nature
as being God Himself. And then
00:04:14.62\00:04:18.92
he speaks about His death,
His substitutionary sacrifice
00:04:18.95\00:04:23.93
as God for us. He speaks of
His resurrection, he presents
00:04:23.99\00:04:30.90
Christ as God who has come into
human life so that He could die
00:04:30.93\00:04:35.90
for us so that we might have
eternal life. So from Genesis
00:04:35.94\00:04:39.74
to Revelation the overarching
theme of the Bible is God's
00:04:39.77\00:04:44.75
work to save fallen humanity.
Luke 19:10 you don't have to
00:04:45.71\00:04:51.12
turn there, but Christ said
For the Son of Man has come to
00:04:51.15\00:04:55.66
seek and to save what?
That which was lost. That's the
00:04:55.69\00:05:00.83
theme in Peter's Epistles
as well. So what we're gonna do
00:05:00.90\00:05:04.00
this week is go back to 1 Peter
and look more closely at what
00:05:04.03\00:05:09.40
it reveals about Jesus.
So let's start with Sunday
00:05:09.44\00:05:14.01
I have Sunday and
that is Jesus Our Sacrifice
00:05:14.04\00:05:18.05
Our lesson asks us to
read two passages of Scripture
00:05:18.08\00:05:21.88
And we will begin with 1 Peter
1:18 and 19. Molly you seem
00:05:21.92\00:05:30.36
to have that, you
want to read that for us?
00:05:30.39\00:05:31.99
For as much as you know
you that were not redeemed with
00:05:34.83\00:05:38.00
corruptible things as silver and
gold from your vain conversation
00:05:38.03\00:05:42.47
received by tradition from your
fathers but with the precious
00:05:42.50\00:05:46.31
blood of Christ as of a lamb
without blemish and without spot
00:05:46.34\00:05:50.88
Alright so there are two
key images in this. We see the
00:05:50.95\00:05:53.72
redemption and we
see the sacrifice.
00:05:53.75\00:05:55.75
So what does redeemed mean?
Redeemed means that you have
00:05:55.78\00:06:00.42
been released upon the receipt
of a ransom. You know we think
00:06:00.46\00:06:05.86
about, during Jesus' days
the slaves there was a certain
00:06:05.89\00:06:11.43
amount of money that could
be paid to ransom them and they
00:06:11.47\00:06:16.24
would have their freedom. But
we also think of today, we talk
00:06:16.27\00:06:20.24
about ransom for kidnapped
victims. We think about ransom
00:06:20.28\00:06:24.78
for prisoners of war maybe.
So what we have here is just
00:06:24.81\00:06:29.75
kind of a picture in my mind
that the human race has been
00:06:29.78\00:06:32.99
kidnapped by Satan. That we
are prisoners of war, of this
00:06:33.02\00:06:38.49
great controversy that's going
on and we can't escape on our
00:06:38.53\00:06:42.40
own. So I need, Jill would
you read John 8:34 and then John
00:06:42.43\00:06:47.40
I'm gonna ask you
to read Romans6:16
00:06:47.44\00:06:51.17
So when we think about
this, this ransom is what Jesus
00:06:51.21\00:06:57.25
paid for us, the price He paid
to redeem us, to buy us back.
00:06:57.31\00:07:03.15
Jesus answered them,
most assuredly I say to you
00:07:05.62\00:07:08.82
whoever commits
sin is a slave of sin.
00:07:08.86\00:07:12.33
Johnny Romans 6:16
Know ye not that to whom ye
00:07:12.36\00:07:17.63
yield yourselves servants
to obey, His servants you are
00:07:17.67\00:07:21.40
to whom you obey. Whether of
sin unto death or of obedience
00:07:21.44\00:07:25.14
unto righteousness. You know
the reason I wanted to point
00:07:25.17\00:07:28.58
these two out is because Peter's
actually talking mostly with
00:07:28.61\00:07:33.45
people who when you talked
about paying a ransom what they
00:07:33.48\00:07:36.05
were thinking of is redeeming
a slave. And we are all slaves
00:07:36.08\00:07:43.12
to sin. That's what the Bible
tells us. Whoever commits sin
00:07:43.16\00:07:46.59
is a slave to sin. So
this fallen humanity of ours
00:07:46.63\00:07:49.80
I love how Paul writes it.
We don't think of ourselves as
00:07:49.83\00:07:55.07
slaves, but he says you're
slaves to whomever you obey
00:07:55.10\00:07:58.34
either you're slaves to the one
of sin that's leading to death
00:07:58.37\00:08:03.18
or slaves of obedience leading
to righteousness and we can go
00:08:03.21\00:08:08.88
into a whole teaching on that
because righteousness, our only
00:08:08.92\00:08:14.12
righteousness is the
righteousness of Jesus Christ
00:08:14.16\00:08:16.73
But when we're made righteous
by Him, He will impart to us
00:08:16.76\00:08:21.60
the ability to walk in
righteousness. And as John wrote
00:08:21.63\00:08:26.63
in 1 John, he said don't
be deceived. Only those who
00:08:26.67\00:08:30.97
practice righteousness are
righteous. So that Scripture
00:08:31.04\00:08:35.64
1 Peter 1:18 says that you
were redeemed from your aimless
00:08:35.68\00:08:41.75
conduct. He was talking
about the futile philosophy of
00:08:41.78\00:08:46.59
paganism. Their vain,
fruitless, empty way of life.
00:08:46.62\00:08:50.69
They had no satisfaction, no
satisfactory meaning or no hope
00:08:50.76\00:08:56.26
for the future. And although
the Jews did make the wrong
00:08:56.30\00:09:00.14
use of tradition this reference
seems to be mostly to the
00:09:00.17\00:09:03.24
Gentiles. So what was
the price of redemption?
00:09:03.27\00:09:07.54
He says it's not with
corruptible, what does that
00:09:07.61\00:09:10.48
word corruptible mean? It
means it can decay, it can rust
00:09:10.51\00:09:15.28
it can be ruined. It's not with
something that was perishable
00:09:15.32\00:09:19.52
The freedom for the slaves
was bought with gold or silver
00:09:19.55\00:09:24.26
But he says, no no no. You were
bought with the precious blood
00:09:24.29\00:09:29.30
our spiritual ransom required
something infinitely more
00:09:29.33\00:09:34.64
precious than gold or silver.
It actually took, it took God
00:09:34.67\00:09:42.88
the Father, as Romans 5:8 says
He demonstrated His love for us
00:09:42.91\00:09:48.02
in that while we were yet
sinners He sent Jesus to die
00:09:48.05\00:09:52.99
for us and I wanna tell you
something. You may have heard
00:09:53.02\00:09:55.79
someone say to you, you are
worthless. Maybe you grew up
00:09:55.82\00:09:58.96
and they said you'll never
amount to anything. That is a
00:09:58.99\00:10:02.16
lie of Satan because you
are worth nothing less than the
00:10:02.20\00:10:06.13
price that God paid for you.
With the precious lifeblood of
00:10:06.17\00:10:10.57
His Son. That's the value
that God puts on your life.
00:10:10.61\00:10:14.64
So he talks about here the
Lamb that Jesus was as a lamb
00:10:14.68\00:10:20.48
without spot or blemish.
It makes you think of the Old
00:10:20.52\00:10:25.29
Testament substitutionary
system which all pointed to
00:10:25.32\00:10:29.12
Jesus Christ. You know what did
John say when he first saw Jesus
00:10:29.16\00:10:32.63
John is baptizing at
the Jordan, what did he say?
00:10:32.66\00:10:35.90
Behold the Lamb of God who
takes away the sins of the earth
00:10:35.93\00:10:41.50
or the world. But then it makes
you think of how in the day of
00:10:41.54\00:10:48.31
the Sanctuary, in the Temple,
when someone sinned they had
00:10:48.34\00:10:53.25
to bring in a precious
Lamb unless they were poor they
00:10:53.28\00:10:56.22
could bring a dove. But they
would have to slice his throat
00:10:56.25\00:11:00.89
then they laid their hands
on him to transfer their sin to
00:11:00.96\00:11:05.29
him and then that blood was
sprinkled on the four altars
00:11:05.33\00:11:09.46
of the Altar of Burnt Offering
which is a type of what?
00:11:09.50\00:11:13.64
The Altar of Burnt
Offering is a type of the cross
00:11:13.67\00:11:16.64
in the Old Testament, you know
the cross in the New Testament
00:11:16.67\00:11:20.28
is what it was showing, so
Christ was burnt, if you will,
00:11:20.31\00:11:25.15
quote unquote on the Altar
of Burnt Offering and then the
00:11:25.18\00:11:28.25
rest of the blood it says in
Leviticus 4:34 was poured out
00:11:28.28\00:11:33.52
at the base of the altar. It
also reminds us of the pascal
00:11:33.56\00:11:39.86
lamb, the Lamb of the Passover
and remember in Exodus what
00:11:39.89\00:11:44.60
did they have to do
00:11:44.67\00:11:47.10
with the blood of the
lamb? They had to apply it
00:11:47.14\00:11:51.01
to the doorpost and it was
by faith then that the angel of
00:11:51.04\00:11:55.58
death, when they applied that
they believed the angel of death
00:11:55.61\00:11:59.21
as God said, would pass over
them. We have to by faith apply
00:11:59.25\00:12:06.25
the blood of the lamb to
us as well. You know sometimes
00:12:06.29\00:12:09.49
people will say Why does
God require sacrifices? Is He
00:12:09.52\00:12:15.93
just a God of blood and violence
No. What the Old Testament
00:12:15.96\00:12:21.44
Sanctuary services what
the temple services showed them
00:12:21.47\00:12:25.61
this was theology in physical
form. So the wages of sin
00:12:25.64\00:12:32.21
is death but the gift of God
is eternal life in Christ Jesus
00:12:32.25\00:12:40.19
was going to take our penalty
for sin and He would redeem
00:12:40.22\00:12:48.10
all sinners who would accept
Him as Savior. Now I need to
00:12:48.16\00:12:51.23
hurry. Colossians 1:13-14 is
the next Scripture that we're
00:12:51.27\00:12:56.44
to look at. It says He has
delivered us from the power
00:12:56.47\00:13:02.58
of darkness and conveyed us into
the kingdom of the Son of His
00:13:02.61\00:13:05.71
love in whom we have
redemption through His blood,
00:13:05.75\00:13:10.49
the forgiveness of sins.
So we've been delivered by the
00:13:10.52\00:13:14.02
person of Jesus Christ from
Satan's kingdom, his bondage
00:13:14.06\00:13:18.49
of darkness and we've
been redeemed and rescued being
00:13:18.53\00:13:24.67
justified freely, excuse me, by
His grace through the redemption
00:13:24.73\00:13:29.27
that is in Christ Jesus.
Jesus said in Matthew chapter 20
00:13:29.30\00:13:33.74
verse 28, Just as the Son of Man
did not come to serve, come to
00:13:34.58\00:13:40.92
be served but to serve and to
give His life a ransom for many
00:13:40.98\00:13:47.36
So Christ came to pay the debt
that you owed, that debt which
00:13:47.39\00:13:56.06
is death. The wages of sin
is death. He came to pay that
00:13:56.10\00:14:00.70
vicariously for you so that you
could be justified before God
00:14:00.74\00:14:05.21
and He also wants to sanctify
us and this is how God operates
00:14:05.24\00:14:10.65
So Shelley you looked
at Christ as our sacrifice
00:14:12.11\00:14:16.15
Well on Monday we look
at the Passion of Christ.
00:14:16.18\00:14:21.62
And, let me just lay a
foundation. Remember Peter
00:14:21.66\00:14:27.86
is talking to or writing
his letters to people that are
00:14:27.86\00:14:33.34
under much persecution.
They are suffering. I think Jill
00:14:33.37\00:14:37.41
you're the one, a few lessons
ago, that pointed out about
00:14:37.44\00:14:42.18
Nero and he was the emperor
of Rome at that time and the
00:14:42.21\00:14:46.35
horrendous things that he was
doing to Christians under grave
00:14:46.38\00:14:51.12
persecution. And so Peter writes
one of the things is on Christ's
00:14:51.15\00:14:59.46
sufferings in the books of
Peter and the reason for that
00:14:59.49\00:15:03.77
would be to show the people
that he's writing to, your
00:15:03.80\00:15:08.27
suffering but our Lord
and Savior suffered also.
00:15:08.30\00:15:11.87
He's not above you in that
suffering and he points out
00:15:11.91\00:15:17.25
how strongly he suffered.
Now again the title today is the
00:15:17.28\00:15:21.55
Passion of Christ. And
that word passion is strong or
00:15:21.58\00:15:27.06
barely controllable emotions.
Synonyms are crucifixion
00:15:27.09\00:15:32.03
suffering, agony or martyrdom
The Greek word for passion
00:15:32.06\00:15:38.37
means to suffer. And the phrase
the Passion of Christ usually
00:15:38.40\00:15:43.04
refers to Jesus' suffering
in the final period of His life
00:15:43.07\00:15:48.21
So that's what we're going
to look at, I have two sections
00:15:48.28\00:15:53.62
of Scripture that I'm going
to look at. The first one is
00:15:53.65\00:15:57.92
1 Peter 2:21-25. Then we're
going to go over to Isaiah 53
00:15:57.99\00:16:05.36
But let's look first at Isaiah
pardon me, 1 Peter 2:21-25
00:16:05.39\00:16:13.87
Pastor if you have that
would you read it for me please?
00:16:13.90\00:16:17.54
For to this you were called
for Christ also suffered for us
00:16:18.91\00:16:22.28
leaving us an example that
you should follow His steps
00:16:22.31\00:16:25.05
who committed no sin nor
was deceit found in His mouth.
00:16:25.08\00:16:28.42
Who when He was reviled
did not revile in return,
00:16:28.45\00:16:31.59
When He suffered He did not
threaten but committed Himself
00:16:31.62\00:16:34.56
to Him who judges righteously.
Who Himself bore our sins
00:16:34.59\00:16:39.29
in His own body on the
tree that we having died to sin
00:16:39.33\00:16:43.30
might live for righteousness
by whose stripes you were healed
00:16:43.33\00:16:47.00
And verse 21 as Pr. Tom read
He did this Peter says, leaving
00:16:48.80\00:16:57.08
us an example that we
should follow His steps.
00:16:57.11\00:17:01.38
And I love 1 Peter 2:24, I think
I quote this a lot. Shelley
00:17:01.45\00:17:06.86
I think you do too. Who Himself
bore our sins in His own body
00:17:06.89\00:17:12.09
on the tree that we
having died to sin might live to
00:17:12.13\00:17:16.60
righteousness, by whose stripes
we were, look at that word were
00:17:16.63\00:17:21.40
that word were is past tense.
By His stripes we were healed
00:17:21.44\00:17:25.84
He goes on to say in verse 25,
For you were like sheep going
00:17:27.54\00:17:32.38
astray but have now returned
to the shepherd and overseer
00:17:32.41\00:17:37.55
of your souls. Why is
that? Because you were redeemed
00:17:37.59\00:17:40.82
Amen. As Shelley was
saying we were redeemed.
00:17:40.86\00:17:43.69
Now I want to take
you to Isaiah chapter 53.
00:17:43.73\00:17:47.30
And I want us to go through
this maybe a little more closely
00:17:47.36\00:17:52.27
Isaiah 53 we're going to
start reading in verse 3.
00:17:52.30\00:17:56.94
And the Scripture says,
now this is talking about Jesus
00:17:58.34\00:18:01.94
He is despised
and rejected of men
00:18:01.98\00:18:07.25
A man of sorrows and
acquainted with grief
00:18:07.28\00:18:10.82
And we hid as it
were, our faces from Him
00:18:11.75\00:18:14.66
He was despised and
we did not esteem Him
00:18:14.72\00:18:18.79
Surely He has borne our
griefs and carried our sorrows
00:18:18.83\00:18:23.93
For we esteemed Him stricken,
smitten by God and afflicted
00:18:23.97\00:18:29.27
Verse 5, but He was what?
He was wounded. What was He
00:18:29.30\00:18:35.84
wounded for? Shelley
you covered this beautifully
00:18:35.88\00:18:38.91
He was wounded for our
transgression. What is a
00:18:38.95\00:18:42.75
transgression?
That's presumptuous sin
00:18:42.78\00:18:46.62
It means to choose to
intentionally disobey, willful
00:18:46.65\00:18:53.96
sin. He was wounded for us
willfully sinning. He covered
00:18:54.00\00:19:01.40
that, He was wounded and I
thought about whether or not I
00:19:01.44\00:19:07.24
should do this but I'm
going to read an account of His
00:19:07.28\00:19:12.41
suffering, of His wounding's.
Because sometimes I think
00:19:12.45\00:19:16.12
we see the pictures of Him and
maybe there's barely a stripe
00:19:16.15\00:19:20.09
on Him, just a little
blood, maybe the crown of thorns
00:19:20.12\00:19:23.66
Oh I want you to know,
this wounding, He was barely
00:19:23.69\00:19:27.30
recognizable as a man.
This wasn't a light thing
00:19:27.36\00:19:31.27
He was wounded for all of
the willful sinning that we did
00:19:31.30\00:19:36.27
He was wounded for our
transgressions. He was bruised
00:19:36.30\00:19:40.34
for our iniquities.
What are iniquities?
00:19:40.38\00:19:43.21
Our immoralities. The
chastisement, that's pain
00:19:43.24\00:19:48.72
inflicted for punishment
and correction. The chastisement
00:19:48.75\00:19:53.32
for our peace was upon
Him and by His stripes we are
00:19:53.36\00:19:57.26
present tense, what was it
in 1 Peter 2:24, past tense
00:19:57.29\00:20:01.86
Here we have in Isaiah
53:5 present tense, and by His
00:20:01.90\00:20:06.50
stripes we are healed. Although
Scripture doesn't say how many
00:20:06.53\00:20:11.37
stripes Jesus received the
practice at that time was for
00:20:11.41\00:20:17.51
those who were scourged
to receive 40 stripes minus 1
00:20:17.55\00:20:23.18
And lashes were inflicted, I
think I'll read that to you in
00:20:23.22\00:20:28.82
just a moment. Let me go on
with verse 6. All we like sheep
00:20:28.86\00:20:34.03
have gone astray. We have
turned everyone to his own
00:20:34.10\00:20:38.20
way and the Lord has laid
on Him the iniquity of us all
00:20:38.23\00:20:44.21
So how much of our
iniquity was laid upon Him? All
00:20:44.24\00:20:47.48
Let me ask you, by the
blood of the Lord Jesus Christ
00:20:47.51\00:20:50.65
by this wounding, by these
stripes, by this blood that He
00:20:50.68\00:20:55.88
shed how many of your sins
were completely eradicated?
00:20:55.92\00:21:01.69
How many of your
sins were covered, Johnny?
00:21:01.76\00:21:03.83
All our sins. All of them
and think of this whole world
00:21:03.86\00:21:08.83
of everybody that ever was and
ever will be, all of those sins
00:21:08.86\00:21:13.03
where were those sins placed?
They were placed on our Lord
00:21:13.07\00:21:17.77
and Savior Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:23, who can quote that?
00:21:17.81\00:21:23.75
For all have sinned and
come short of the glory of God.
00:21:23.78\00:21:28.55
Jesus died a horrible
death in our stead and He wasn't
00:21:28.58\00:21:35.39
protected or some way immune
to the pain, the anguish and the
00:21:35.42\00:21:40.26
suffering. He didn't have
any chloroform. He didn't take a
00:21:40.30\00:21:44.87
pain pill beforehand. He
received that pain, He felt that
00:21:44.90\00:21:50.37
pain. While in the Garden of
Gethsemane, that's Matthew 26:39
00:21:50.41\00:21:56.01
Let me read this, the Scripture
says, He went a little farther
00:21:56.04\00:22:00.75
and fell on His face and prayed
saying, Oh Father if it is
00:22:00.78\00:22:06.22
possible let this cup pass from
me. Nevertheless not as I will
00:22:06.25\00:22:11.16
but as You will. See He knew
He was about to go through a
00:22:11.19\00:22:15.83
horrendous experience. He didn't
know exactly what was gonna
00:22:15.86\00:22:21.44
happen. He knew it was gonna
be horrible. It was gonna be
00:22:21.47\00:22:25.34
horrible, bitter cup but
what did He say? Nevertheless
00:22:25.41\00:22:29.38
not as I will but as You
will. Now let me read you the
00:22:29.41\00:22:33.85
suffering of Christ.
Jesus suffers a severe physical
00:22:33.88\00:22:38.79
beating. During a flogging,
a victim was tied to a post
00:22:38.82\00:22:43.69
leaving his back entirely
exposed. The Romans used a whip
00:22:43.73\00:22:47.50
called a flagon which consisted
of small pieces of bone
00:22:47.56\00:22:52.27
and metal attached to a number
of leather strands. The number
00:22:52.30\00:22:57.41
again isn't given in the Gospel
but we know that is probably was
00:22:57.44\00:23:01.81
39. The victim often died
from the beating. 39 hits were
00:23:01.84\00:23:07.52
believed to bring the criminal
to one from death. During the
00:23:07.55\00:23:11.42
flogging the skin was stripped
from the back exposing a bloody
00:23:11.49\00:23:16.49
mass of muscle and bone. Extreme
blood loss occurred from this
00:23:16.52\00:23:21.10
beating, weakening the victim
perhaps to the point of being
00:23:21.13\00:23:26.27
unconscious. So I felt it
important for us to realize
00:23:26.30\00:23:33.64
how horrendous this was.
And now the reason He did it,
00:23:33.68\00:23:37.68
Ellen White says in the Desire
of Ages, page 25, Christ was
00:23:37.71\00:23:45.25
treated as we deserved. We
deserved those stripes, that we
00:23:45.29\00:23:49.99
might be treated as He deserves
He was condemned for our sins
00:23:50.03\00:23:54.86
in which He had no share that
we might be justified by His
00:23:54.93\00:23:59.23
righteousness in which we had
no share. He suffered the death
00:23:59.27\00:24:04.24
which was whose? which was ours
that we might receive the life
00:24:04.27\00:24:08.54
which was His. With His stripes
we are healed. Praise God
00:24:08.58\00:24:14.92
for our Lord and
Savior that suffered for us
00:24:14.98\00:24:18.79
that we don't
have to suffer. Amen.
00:24:18.85\00:24:21.96
Thank you for sharing
that. You know I'm to talk about
00:24:24.76\00:24:30.13
the Resurrection of Jesus
and every time I think about
00:24:30.17\00:24:34.50
His resurrection, I
think about where He came from
00:24:34.54\00:24:39.41
He's a God that cannot
die. He actually tells us in
00:24:41.24\00:24:47.98
1 Timothy 6:16 that He
has immortality dwelling in
00:24:48.02\00:24:52.02
unapproachable light in His
being. Well this is what He did
00:24:52.05\00:24:58.76
for me. Let's
turn to Philippians 2
00:24:58.79\00:25:02.16
We'll look at verses 6-8.
00:25:03.87\00:25:06.97
Philippians 2 beginning
with verse 6, it says, who being
00:25:12.57\00:25:15.84
in the form of God did not
consider it robbery to be equal
00:25:15.88\00:25:19.21
with God but made Himself of
no reputation, taking the form
00:25:19.25\00:25:23.39
of a bondservant and coming
in the likeness of men and being
00:25:23.42\00:25:26.96
found in the appearance of men
He humbled Himself and became
00:25:26.99\00:25:29.66
obedient to the point of death
even the death of the cross
00:25:29.69\00:25:34.40
I, it just always has been
overwhelming for me to think of
00:25:35.33\00:25:39.97
the level of, how far God
reached out for me because it is
00:25:40.00\00:25:45.91
my sin that caused Him to do
this and I think about the fact
00:25:45.94\00:25:51.45
that He, because of His perfect
character, everything about Him
00:25:51.48\00:25:56.15
is life and brings life and when
He became sin for me He actually
00:25:56.18\00:26:02.12
became the very thing He abhors
00:26:02.16\00:26:05.29
He hated sin but He loves
the sinner so much that He was
00:26:05.36\00:26:11.30
moved with such compassion
that He came and dwelt among us
00:26:11.33\00:26:15.77
and hung out with the
wretched refuse of the universe.
00:26:15.84\00:26:21.04
Those who had bought into
the lie that the highest of all
00:26:21.08\00:26:24.28
angels had sold and, but
the fact that He came to save
00:26:24.31\00:26:30.12
and rescue me and to rescue you
and to rescue everyone around
00:26:30.15\00:26:34.56
this table by paying that
penalty for breaking His own law
00:26:34.59\00:26:39.43
See, someone had to pay the
penalty. And the only one that
00:26:39.46\00:26:44.97
really could for Jesus to
win, to be righteous, just and
00:26:45.03\00:26:50.04
to justify us was to do what
He did for us in condescending
00:26:50.07\00:26:53.98
to the point of the death
of the cross. He gave all to do
00:26:54.01\00:26:57.48
this. He emptied Himself out
completely. We know that when
00:26:57.51\00:27:01.75
we see Jesus, we see whom?
We see the Father. We see the
00:27:01.78\00:27:06.05
character of God being
demonstrated before our very
00:27:06.09\00:27:09.16
eyes. You know it's my sin,
it's our sin that separated Him
00:27:09.19\00:27:13.60
from us because His, that
unapproachable light would
00:27:13.63\00:27:17.13
devour us if we did, so He
wraps Himself in flesh, the veil
00:27:17.17\00:27:22.64
so that He can
actually dwell with me.
00:27:22.67\00:27:26.21
He had victory over sin so
that I can have eternal life
00:27:26.24\00:27:30.68
with Him. He's wanting to
retrieve, you know you think
00:27:31.51\00:27:35.32
about what was lost by
sin what did humanity have
00:27:35.38\00:27:38.29
what we had before and
what Adam and Eve gave away
00:27:38.35\00:27:41.59
we all are under
the curse by that choice
00:27:42.79\00:27:46.56
and to know that, you know
sometimes when you look at the
00:27:46.59\00:27:51.10
universe you feel
pretty insignificant
00:27:51.13\00:27:53.87
Uh you feel real small when
you see how big this universe is
00:27:53.90\00:27:57.31
And to know that He spoke things
into existence, that He has
00:27:57.34\00:28:00.68
that kind of power. What would
motivate Him to care so much
00:28:00.71\00:28:04.68
so much for us? Well the
thing that He wanted to give us
00:28:05.35\00:28:08.35
is victory over the
grave. The wage of sin is death
00:28:08.38\00:28:13.12
When you unplug from the
light source the wage of that
00:28:13.15\00:28:15.22
is death. So He decided to pay
that price. Let's turn together
00:28:15.26\00:28:20.16
to John chapter 11
00:28:20.20\00:28:21.93
and we're gonna
look at verses 23-25
00:28:27.60\00:28:31.07
Shelley would you be
so kind as to read that?
00:28:31.11\00:28:34.31
John 11:23, Jesus said to
her your brother will rise again
00:28:37.81\00:28:42.65
He is speaking to Martha
of Mary, Martha and Lazarus
00:28:42.68\00:28:47.12
Mary and Martha
were Lazarus' sisters.
00:28:47.16\00:28:50.46
Lazarus was their
brother. Yeah I said that right.
00:28:50.49\00:28:53.43
Jesus said to her, your brother
will rise again. Martha said
00:28:53.46\00:28:57.03
to Him, I know that He will
rise again in the resurrection
00:28:57.07\00:29:00.34
of the last day. Jesus said
to her, I am the resurrection
00:29:00.37\00:29:05.44
and the life. He who believes
in me, though he may die
00:29:05.47\00:29:11.05
he shall live. And I think
about this that Martha had an
00:29:11.08\00:29:16.58
expression of faith in verse
24 when she said I know that
00:29:16.62\00:29:19.55
he will rise in the resurrection
at the last day. She wasn't
00:29:19.59\00:29:22.96
confused. You know the church
leaders were confused as to
00:29:22.99\00:29:25.13
whether or not there
even was a resurrection.
00:29:25.16\00:29:27.23
And here you could tell
that she wasn't listening to the
00:29:27.23\00:29:30.23
confused leaders, she was
listening to Jesus. She was
00:29:30.27\00:29:32.57
actually having faith in His
own words. But then He corrects
00:29:32.60\00:29:37.01
her, instructs her and tells
her that He is the resurrection
00:29:37.04\00:29:40.51
and the life. And He also
says here in verse 26, whoever
00:29:40.54\00:29:44.18
lives and believes in me shall
never die, do you believe this?
00:29:44.21\00:29:47.85
Now sometimes Christians take
this to think that when you die
00:29:47.88\00:29:51.45
you're going straight to
heaven, there's your evidence.
00:29:51.49\00:29:53.36
But what He's talking about,
cause He talks about our first
00:29:53.39\00:29:56.56
death as a sleep, He's
talking about the second death,
00:29:56.59\00:29:59.33
eternally separated from God,
it will never happen for you
00:29:59.36\00:30:02.20
Second death is mentioned
several times in Revelation
00:30:02.26\00:30:05.57
Absolutely! Lots of
people don't know about it
00:30:05.63\00:30:08.00
Absolutely, Let's turn
to Revelation chapter 5
00:30:08.04\00:30:11.27
And I like this chapter because
00:30:12.57\00:30:15.74
we're looking at a special scene
here. This is the coronation of
00:30:16.14\00:30:20.55
Jesus and I'm going
to start with verse 1.
00:30:20.58\00:30:26.79
And I saw in the right hand
of Him who sat on the throne
00:30:31.03\00:30:33.70
a scroll, written inside and
on the back, sealed with 7 seals
00:30:33.73\00:30:37.37
It's interesting that
theologians say that could be
00:30:37.40\00:30:39.90
the Book of Life, it
could be the Book of Covenant,
00:30:39.93\00:30:41.64
the title deed to the universe,
the judgment scroll or record
00:30:41.67\00:30:45.34
of human history. In any case
it's our hope for the future
00:30:45.37\00:30:49.68
that is sealed. Then I
saw a strong angel, verse 2
00:30:49.71\00:30:52.78
proclaiming with a loud voice,
who is worthy to open the scroll
00:30:52.81\00:30:56.18
and loose its seals. And no one
in heaven or on earth or under
00:30:56.22\00:30:59.45
the earth was able to
open the scroll or look at it.
00:30:59.49\00:31:01.96
So I wept much. John is in
vision. He's seeing that this
00:31:01.99\00:31:05.73
scroll must be opened because
no one was found worthy to open
00:31:05.79\00:31:09.23
and read the scroll or look at
it. But one of the elders said
00:31:09.26\00:31:12.70
Do not weep. Behold the Lion
of the tribe of Judah, the root
00:31:12.73\00:31:16.54
of David has prevailed to open
the scroll and to loose it's 7
00:31:16.57\00:31:19.71
seals. And I looked and beheld
in the midst of the throne
00:31:19.74\00:31:23.04
and the four living creatures,
in the midst of the elders
00:31:23.08\00:31:25.08
stood a Lamb as though it had
been slain having seven horns
00:31:25.11\00:31:29.45
seven eyes which are the seven
spirits of God sent out to all
00:31:29.48\00:31:33.29
the earth and there we have the
day of Pentecost. Then He came
00:31:33.32\00:31:37.53
and took the scroll out of
the right hand of Him who sat
00:31:37.56\00:31:39.89
on the throne. Jesus was
victorious over the grave
00:31:39.93\00:31:43.30
and that sacrifice was accepted
in heaven. And as a matter
00:31:43.33\00:31:49.04
of fact it caused all of heaven
to rejoice. because now there's
00:31:49.07\00:31:52.61
victory over the grave. And
the evidence that this price had
00:31:52.64\00:31:58.65
been paid. You know you think
about on resurrection morning
00:31:58.68\00:32:01.58
He said do not touch me for
I have not yet ascended to my
00:32:01.62\00:32:04.82
Father but then later
on He's saying touch me.
00:32:04.85\00:32:06.86
You know that this scene
had been taking place. Amen.
00:32:06.89\00:32:10.43
So now, verse 8, when He had
taken the scroll the four living
00:32:10.46\00:32:14.46
creatures and 24 elders
fell down before the Lamb
00:32:14.46\00:32:16.90
we're here at the throne room
of God. Each having a harp of
00:32:16.93\00:32:20.10
golden bowls full of incense
which are the prayers of the
00:32:20.14\00:32:23.10
saints and they sang a new song
saying, You are worthy to take
00:32:23.14\00:32:25.94
the scroll, to open its
seals for you were slain, You've
00:32:26.01\00:32:28.98
redeemed us to God by Your
blood out of every tribe and
00:32:29.01\00:32:32.15
tongue and people and nation
and have made us kings and
00:32:32.18\00:32:35.02
priests to our God and we
shall reign on the earth. Amen
00:32:35.05\00:32:38.45
So victory is because of the
resurrection of Jesus. He had
00:32:38.49\00:32:41.96
victory over sin and the
only reason why God was able to
00:32:41.99\00:32:45.23
raise from that grave is
He was victorious against all
00:32:45.26\00:32:49.26
the wiles of the devil. Every
thing that Eve and Adam fell
00:32:49.30\00:32:52.93
by He did not when He was at
the tree and tempted, He did not
00:32:52.97\00:32:56.27
Um let's turn to 2 Corinthians
00:32:56.30\00:33:00.58
Chapter 5
00:33:02.61\00:33:05.25
2 Corinthians 5 and
we're gonna look at verse 18
00:33:08.85\00:33:13.49
Oh I love this verse
00:33:15.46\00:33:16.79
I'm going to start with 17.
00:33:18.43\00:33:20.96
Therefore, this is 2 Corinthians
5:17, therefore if anyone is
00:33:21.33\00:33:25.93
in Christ he's a new creation.
Old things have passed away
00:33:25.97\00:33:29.94
behold all things have become
new and now all things are of
00:33:29.97\00:33:33.04
God who has reconciled us
to Himself through Jesus Christ
00:33:33.07\00:33:38.11
God is in the reconciliation
business. He has paid the price
00:33:38.15\00:33:43.02
for all to receive. He has
predestined them, we are with
00:33:43.05\00:33:47.16
Him and we are redeemed and
we are in His presence again.
00:33:47.19\00:33:51.06
He has given us the ministry
of reconciliation. The good news
00:33:51.09\00:33:54.93
of the Gospel is that
this world is not all there is
00:33:54.93\00:33:58.00
that there is hope beyond
the grave. Only those that truly
00:33:58.03\00:34:03.17
believe what the Bible teaches
about the resurrection of Jesus
00:34:03.20\00:34:06.27
and what it means for humanity
have a hope that is beyond
00:34:06.31\00:34:09.98
the grave and it is life that
God wants to give every one of
00:34:10.01\00:34:13.31
us and life eternal and that is
the good news this world needs
00:34:13.35\00:34:17.42
to hear. Amen. Thank
you Tom That's precious.
00:34:17.45\00:34:20.49
Thank you so much. I'm
just so thankful for Jesus.
00:34:20.52\00:34:24.59
As Molly shared it just
ministered to my heart what
00:34:25.59\00:34:28.86
He went through for me, for you
for each one of us and He was
00:34:28.93\00:34:35.57
victorious, completely without
sin, the perfect sacrifice
00:34:35.60\00:34:40.61
now seated at the right hand of
the Father making intercession
00:34:40.64\00:34:47.82
for us. On Wednesday we
look at Jesus as the Messiah
00:34:47.85\00:34:52.32
and let's go to Matthew chapter
16. This is the first time that
00:34:52.35\00:34:57.86
Peter, one of the 12 disciples
apostles, identifies Jesus
00:34:58.76\00:35:04.93
as the Messiah and we're
gonna take a look at that.
00:35:04.97\00:35:08.24
We discussed this, I think
it was actually in our first
00:35:08.27\00:35:10.74
lesson on Peter. But
we're gonna take another look at
00:35:10.77\00:35:13.74
this and then we're gonna look
at some Old Testament passages
00:35:13.78\00:35:17.08
dealing with the promise
of the Messiah. So Matthew 16
00:35:17.11\00:35:21.72
Now the setting for this, what
took place here. It took place
00:35:21.75\00:35:26.69
in Caesarea, Philippi. That's
a town about 25 miles north
00:35:26.72\00:35:30.86
of the Sea of Galilee. Now
I know Shelley and Molly and
00:35:30.89\00:35:34.76
I don't know if Bro.
Johnny you've been to Israel
00:35:34.83\00:35:37.70
the Holy Land? Yes. Ok. Have
you been to Israel? No I haven't
00:35:37.73\00:35:40.27
Ok, so four of us have
been, but if you go to Caesarea
00:35:40.30\00:35:43.91
Philippi and you see what is
there, there is that huge wall
00:35:43.94\00:35:48.88
of rock like a massive wall
of rock and then there's a cave
00:35:48.91\00:35:53.88
kind of at the base of it and
in that time they had a temple
00:35:53.92\00:36:00.42
right there at the base
of the rock to the god Pan
00:36:00.46\00:36:05.09
and it was a heathen temple,
heathen sacrifices and just a
00:36:05.13\00:36:11.17
little ways away from where
that took place, Jesus is with
00:36:11.20\00:36:15.64
His disciples and to me it's
interesting that Peter would
00:36:15.67\00:36:18.51
identify Jesus as the Messiah,
as the Christ where you can just
00:36:18.54\00:36:23.41
look over a stone's throw and
you can see where they had that
00:36:23.45\00:36:26.18
idolatry, that heathen
worship. So we're in verse 16
00:36:26.25\00:36:31.09
Matthew 16:16. Jesus had
said who do you say I am?
00:36:31.12\00:36:38.09
And they said, well some say
John the Baptist, or prophets or
00:36:38.13\00:36:40.73
whatever and then Peter
makes his confession of faith
00:36:40.76\00:36:44.23
Verse 16. Simon Peter answered
and said, You are the Christ
00:36:44.27\00:36:48.30
the Son of the Living God. Now
that word for Christ in Greek
00:36:48.34\00:36:53.61
is Christos, it means Anointed
One, the Messiah. That word
00:36:53.64\00:36:59.15
is used over 500 times in the
New Testament. It comes from the
00:36:59.21\00:37:04.32
Hebrew word Anoint and we're
gonna do just a little word
00:37:04.35\00:37:07.56
study here. Times in the
past, times in the Old Testament
00:37:07.59\00:37:12.13
where this word was used because
the disciples at that time,
00:37:12.16\00:37:15.70
they didn't have the New
Testament. They had maybe a
00:37:15.76\00:37:19.03
faulty understanding of
what the Messiah was going to do
00:37:19.07\00:37:22.80
um all they had was the Old
Testament. And some of Paul's
00:37:22.84\00:37:27.21
writings they had, that's
true but I'm talking of the time
00:37:27.24\00:37:30.38
when Peter made this declaration
in Matthew. They didn't have
00:37:30.41\00:37:34.02
Paul's writings at that point.
All they're looking at is just
00:37:34.05\00:37:37.39
looking previous
the Old Testament.
00:37:37.42\00:37:39.45
So we're going to look at that.
The Hebrew word that would be
00:37:39.49\00:37:43.29
translated as Christos in
Greek, the Hebrew word, if I can
00:37:43.32\00:37:47.20
pronounce it, Mashiach.
Is that correct, Mashiach.
00:37:47.23\00:37:50.67
And it literally means
to anoint. It's used in the
00:37:50.70\00:37:53.54
Old Testament many different
times and we're gonna go to
00:37:53.57\00:37:55.97
several of those references.
Let's look at 1 Samuel 24
00:37:56.00\00:38:00.04
These are all references
referring to using references
00:38:04.81\00:38:09.28
to this Mashiach -
Messiah or anointed.
00:38:09.32\00:38:13.76
To be anointed, usually they
were referring to a consecrated
00:38:13.79\00:38:19.29
person who is set
apart as a king, or a priest
00:38:19.33\00:38:24.50
for a special prophetic function
00:38:24.53\00:38:26.87
some sort of special function.
We're in 1 Samuel 24 verse 6
00:38:26.90\00:38:30.54
You wanna read that Shelley?
Verse 6, And he said to his men
00:38:30.57\00:38:35.81
The Lord forbid that I should
do this thing to my master
00:38:35.84\00:38:39.88
the Lord's anointed, to stretch
out my hand against him seeing
00:38:39.91\00:38:44.92
he's the anointed of the Lord.
So that word the Lord's anointed
00:38:44.95\00:38:49.09
is the use of that word and
here it's referring to King Saul
00:38:49.12\00:38:52.59
David was not wanting to
kill King Saul because he said
00:38:52.66\00:38:56.40
He is the Lord's anointed.
So Peter, in his knowledge
00:38:56.43\00:39:00.37
of what was in the Old Testament
he would've known that this word
00:39:00.40\00:39:03.91
refers to someone who
would be coming as a king
00:39:03.94\00:39:06.27
someone who would be a king.
Let's look at another reference
00:39:06.34\00:39:09.11
We're in Psalm chapter 2
00:39:09.14\00:39:13.38
Now Psalm talks about two ways
for individuals. Psalm chapter 2
00:39:13.42\00:39:21.56
talks about two ways for
nations. Or the rebellion of
00:39:21.59\00:39:26.29
the nations against the Messiah.
It talks about how the nations
00:39:26.36\00:39:29.10
relate to the Messiah and
how the Messiah relates to the
00:39:29.13\00:39:32.30
nations. Verse 1 says, why do
the nations rage and the people
00:39:32.33\00:39:36.14
plot a vain thing. Or
plot literally means meditate
00:39:36.17\00:39:39.51
So the righteous are meditating
on God's law while the wicked
00:39:40.38\00:39:44.75
are meditating on ways
that they can rebel against
00:39:44.78\00:39:49.12
the law of God. Then we look at
verse 2 and we see this Hebrew
00:39:49.15\00:39:52.69
word come out again. The kings
of the earth set themselves
00:39:52.72\00:39:56.76
and the rulers take counsel
together against the Lord
00:39:56.79\00:40:00.86
and against His anointed.
There's that word anointed
00:40:00.90\00:40:05.63
Here we see this religious
conflict against God and His
00:40:05.67\00:40:09.70
anointed King and the
people of the world, the wicked
00:40:09.74\00:40:12.97
the rebellious people. So Peter
looking back, we're looking at
00:40:13.01\00:40:17.38
Old Testament references for
this word. He would know that
00:40:17.41\00:40:21.78
this word meant someone anointed
as King. This word was referring
00:40:21.82\00:40:26.49
to the coming Messiah who would
be in conflict or controversy
00:40:26.55\00:40:32.79
against the forces of
evil. Then we look at Isaiah 45
00:40:32.83\00:40:36.67
Now this is an interesting
passage. Isaiah 45 verse 1
00:40:36.70\00:40:41.97
This is referring to Cyrus a
pagan king but this is actually
00:40:44.21\00:40:49.71
a type of Christ. Isaiah
45:1 Molly, do you have that?
00:40:49.74\00:40:54.52
Thus saith the Lord to His
anointed, to Cyrus whose right
00:40:54.55\00:40:57.95
hand I have holden to subdue
nations before him and I will
00:40:57.99\00:41:02.12
loose the loins of kings to
open before him the two leaved
00:41:02.16\00:41:06.49
gates and the
gates shall not be shut.
00:41:06.53\00:41:09.43
So Cyrus, this is this word
His anointed. The Lord to His
00:41:09.86\00:41:14.00
anointed, to Cyrus, he was a
pagan king. But this is still
00:41:14.04\00:41:18.31
a reference, he was a type
of Christ. He was raised up by
00:41:18.34\00:41:22.54
God to release God's
captives, the children of Israel
00:41:22.61\00:41:26.51
He did God's pleasure
on the nation of Babylon
00:41:26.58\00:41:30.15
Now we're gonna look at a
reference, the same Hebrew word
00:41:30.19\00:41:33.42
but instead of using it and
translating it in English into
00:41:33.46\00:41:37.26
anointed, it's
actually translated Messiah
00:41:37.29\00:41:39.46
This is the two times in
Scripture in the Old Testament
00:41:39.49\00:41:42.70
this is translated
Messiah. We're going to Daniel
00:41:42.73\00:41:45.23
Daniel chapter 9
00:41:45.27\00:41:49.04
verses 25 and 26
00:41:49.07\00:41:52.34
You have that Pr. Tom?
00:41:53.41\00:41:55.21
Yes. Know therefore and
understand that from the going
00:41:56.78\00:41:59.35
forth of the command to restore
and build Jerusalem until
00:41:59.38\00:42:01.88
Messiah the Prince there
shall be 7 weeks, 62 weeks
00:42:01.92\00:42:04.82
the streets shall be
built again and the wall even in
00:42:04.85\00:42:08.16
troublous times. And after
62 weeks the Messiah shall be
00:42:08.19\00:42:11.63
cut off, but not for Himself,
and the people of the prince
00:42:11.66\00:42:14.56
who is to come shall destroy
the city and the Sanctuary
00:42:14.60\00:42:17.17
and the end of it shall be with
a flood unto the end of the war
00:42:17.20\00:42:19.60
desolations are determined.
00:42:19.67\00:42:21.00
So the word we're looking
for this Mashiach in Hebrew
00:42:21.04\00:42:25.67
is translated in verse
25, until Messiah the Prince
00:42:25.71\00:42:30.31
That's the first time in
Old Testament that word is
00:42:30.35\00:42:32.41
translated Messiah. And what
was the purpose of the Messiah?
00:42:32.45\00:42:35.85
Verse 24, to make an end of
sin to make reconciliation for
00:42:35.92\00:42:41.22
iniquity. To bring in
righteousness. To confirm
00:42:41.26\00:42:45.59
prophecy. You notice it says
verse 25, Messiah the Prince
00:42:45.63\00:42:51.77
The word for prince sometimes
in the Old Testament is
00:42:51.80\00:42:54.37
translated as king. Sometimes
it's translated as a priest
00:42:54.40\00:42:59.77
You think about Melchizedek
that's another type of Christ
00:43:00.41\00:43:04.65
and he was not only a
king but he was also a priest
00:43:04.68\00:43:09.92
a type of Christ, cause in the
Old Testament times they were
00:43:09.95\00:43:13.09
either a king or a priest but
not both. And Jesus fulfilled
00:43:13.12\00:43:18.06
both roles when he came
as a King and as a Priest.
00:43:18.09\00:43:21.90
So Peter, there's many more
verses, but Peter looking back
00:43:22.46\00:43:26.23
when he said to
Christ, Thou art the Christ
00:43:26.27\00:43:29.90
his knowledge, now we don't
know how much he had studied
00:43:30.34\00:43:33.68
the Old Testament but we
know that Jewish leaders knew
00:43:33.71\00:43:37.28
many of these verses in the
Old Testament, had studied the
00:43:37.31\00:43:40.65
Messiah. They had a faulty
understanding. They knew He was
00:43:40.68\00:43:44.82
coming as a king. They thought
he was coming to overthrow the
00:43:44.85\00:43:48.26
Romans. But they had this
understanding He was going to
00:43:48.29\00:43:51.09
bring salvation and
bring reconciliation and put
00:43:51.13\00:43:53.86
an end to sin,
confirm that prophecy.
00:43:53.90\00:43:58.20
As we talk about, and I know
Bro. John is going to talk about
00:43:59.53\00:44:02.97
the Divine Messiah, but as we
talk about Christ, I just wanna
00:44:03.04\00:44:06.07
leave you with this.
Who is Christ to you?
00:44:06.11\00:44:10.75
We can say who is Christ
to Peter. Well that's good and
00:44:11.45\00:44:14.12
well. Who is Christ to
the disciples or the apostles
00:44:14.15\00:44:17.85
or in 1st and 2nd Peter
he had a fuller understanding
00:44:17.89\00:44:22.42
of Jesus as the Messiah as
opposed to what he did when he
00:44:22.46\00:44:26.49
actually walked with Jesus. He
knew more the sacrificial side
00:44:26.53\00:44:29.83
the sacrificial lamb, but who
is Christ to you. I just want
00:44:29.86\00:44:32.93
to appeal to you at home. If
you have not accepted the Lord
00:44:33.00\00:44:37.21
Jesus Christ as your
Savior make a decision now.
00:44:37.24\00:44:40.81
Say God I want to give you
my heart, I want to give you
00:44:40.84\00:44:44.01
my life. I want to make
you Lord and Savior of my life
00:44:44.05\00:44:48.92
Amen, Amen, Amen.
00:44:48.95\00:44:50.69
Amen, praise the Lord.
00:44:50.72\00:44:52.05
We move to Thursday's lesson
and that brings in another
00:44:52.09\00:44:56.59
wonderful and precious teaching
and that is Jesus as the Divine
00:44:56.62\00:45:00.90
Messiah. And it is interesting
when we look at this topic
00:45:00.93\00:45:05.40
how marvelously it is
also presented to us in 1 Peter
00:45:05.43\00:45:11.27
chapter 5 as well. I would like
to go at this time to 1 Peter
00:45:11.31\00:45:18.11
and we're going to look at
a few Scriptures where we see
00:45:18.15\00:45:22.38
Peter identifying
Christ in a wonderful way.
00:45:22.42\00:45:27.02
And I would like to ask
Sister Molly to read 1 Peter 1:3
00:45:27.06\00:45:31.39
Pr. Tom, 2 Peter 1:8 and Sister
Jill maybe you can read 2 Peter
00:45:32.09\00:45:39.27
chapter 1 verse 14 and 16. So
if we're ready with 1 Peter 1:3
00:45:39.30\00:45:44.34
According as His divine power
has given unto us all things
00:45:45.27\00:45:50.08
pertaining unto life and
godliness through the knowledge
00:45:50.11\00:45:53.92
of Him that has
called us to glory and virtue
00:45:53.95\00:45:57.39
You must be reading another
2 Peter, it's 1 Peter chapter 1
00:45:57.42\00:46:00.52
verse 3. If
you'll go there please.
00:46:00.56\00:46:02.49
You know I was in 1 Peter 1:3
and I thought you said 2nd, ok
00:46:06.03\00:46:08.86
Blessed be the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ which
00:46:08.90\00:46:12.50
according to His abundant mercy
has begotten us again unto a
00:46:12.53\00:46:16.54
lively hope by the resurrection
of Jesus Christ from the dead
00:46:16.57\00:46:20.71
Thank you very much and Pr.
Tom 2 Peter chapter 1, verse 8
00:46:20.74\00:46:25.25
For if these things are yours
and abound you will be neither
00:46:25.28\00:46:28.75
barren nor unfruitful in
the knowledge of the Lord Jesus
00:46:28.78\00:46:31.32
Christ. Thank
you. And Sister Jill.
00:46:31.35\00:46:34.69
2 Peter chapter
1, verses 14 and 16.
00:46:34.72\00:46:39.76
Knowing that shortly I
must put off my tent just as our
00:46:39.83\00:46:43.67
Lord Jesus Christ showed me.
Verse 16, for we did not follow
00:46:43.70\00:46:48.17
cunningly devised fables when we
made known to you the power and
00:46:48.20\00:46:52.07
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
but were eyewitnesses of His
00:46:52.11\00:46:56.04
majesty. Thank you very
much. We see some references
00:46:56.08\00:46:59.51
here to Jesus being called Lord
and even though in secular terms
00:46:59.55\00:47:05.12
in those days a Lord was
somebody that was in charge
00:47:05.15\00:47:08.56
of things. And even today,
in England, you hear them say
00:47:08.59\00:47:12.16
lord so and so and
he's just a human being.
00:47:12.19\00:47:14.76
However, when we're
talking about Jesus we have to
00:47:14.83\00:47:17.57
understand that he's not
only talking about Him as Master
00:47:17.60\00:47:21.57
as Leader but also as
divine. I would like to show
00:47:21.60\00:47:26.98
an interesting discussion that
took place and this brings us
00:47:27.01\00:47:30.45
to Matthew, no Luke chapter 20
00:47:30.48\00:47:35.15
and we're going to read a
few verses in Luke chapter 20
00:47:35.18\00:47:38.09
that's verses
41-44. Luke 20 verses 41-44
00:47:38.12\00:47:43.43
And we have Sister Shelley that
didn't read yet. We'd like to
00:47:43.46\00:47:48.10
ask you, Luke 20:41-44. Luke 20
verse 41, Then He said to them
00:47:48.13\00:47:54.77
How can they say that the Christ
is the Son of David? Now David
00:47:54.80\00:47:58.64
himself said in the book of
Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord
00:47:58.67\00:48:02.41
sit at my right hand, till I
make your enemies your footstool
00:48:02.44\00:48:06.25
Therefore David calls Him Lord
00:48:06.31\00:48:09.78
How many, Therefore David
calls Him Lord, how is He then
00:48:09.82\00:48:16.93
his son? thank you very much.
Here Jesus is quoting a Psalm
00:48:16.96\00:48:23.37
Psalm 110. And it is understood
in the Jewish community that
00:48:23.43\00:48:28.17
this is talking
about the Messiah.
00:48:28.20\00:48:30.51
And it's an interesting wording-
The Lord said to my Lord
00:48:30.57\00:48:33.94
showing the divinity of Christ.
And when Jesus talks to the
00:48:35.08\00:48:39.38
scribes and Pharisees, how
is He his Son when David said
00:48:39.41\00:48:44.69
The Lord said to my Lord, they
were alarmed at Jesus claiming
00:48:44.72\00:48:48.36
this. And even when Jesus
spoke of His pre-existence
00:48:48.39\00:48:54.10
uh when He talked about Abraham
and you say you're not even
00:48:54.10\00:48:57.27
50 years old and you've
already seen and heard Abraham?
00:48:57.30\00:49:01.27
So it was a mystery to them that
were in Jesus' time and it has
00:49:01.30\00:49:05.84
been somewhat of a mystery
among Christians that even
00:49:05.87\00:49:08.88
today you have some religious
bodies not understanding that
00:49:08.91\00:49:12.08
Jesus is God, the divine Son
of God. So let's move to John
00:49:12.11\00:49:16.25
chapter 1. In John 1 you find
one of the clearest revelation
00:49:16.28\00:49:23.93
if I say that, revelation of
Jesus' divinity, that He is God
00:49:23.99\00:49:29.50
John 1:1. In the beginning was
the Word, and the Word was with
00:49:29.53\00:49:35.90
God and the Word was God.
Very, very clear of course
00:49:35.94\00:49:41.41
you go to verse 14 of John
chapter 1 and it says the Word
00:49:41.44\00:49:44.35
was made flesh and dwelt among
us. Talking about the moment
00:49:44.38\00:49:48.72
when Jesus became flesh. Now
prior to this He was not flesh
00:49:48.75\00:49:54.12
He was God. And you can, if you
had the capacity, go to eternity
00:49:56.06\00:50:00.96
past to try to find a beginning
for Christ and there is no
00:50:01.00\00:50:05.67
beginning because He has
always existed. He is eternal
00:50:05.70\00:50:10.44
So in the beginning, wherever
that beginning was known
00:50:10.51\00:50:13.88
we can go and keep going,
trying to find a beginning
00:50:13.91\00:50:16.85
and there is no beginning
for Christ because He is God
00:50:16.88\00:50:19.91
has always existed, has declared
Him as God here in John,
00:50:19.95\00:50:23.69
chapter 1, verse 1. So
there are other places we can go
00:50:23.72\00:50:28.12
and here is one that I'd
like to point out in John 20:28
00:50:28.16\00:50:34.10
And Sister Jill if you help us
with John chapter 20, verse 28
00:50:34.13\00:50:38.90
And Thomas answered and said
unto Him, my Lord and my God
00:50:41.74\00:50:46.21
Wow! What a powerful message
we have Thomas revealing.
00:50:46.24\00:50:51.85
And Thomas before doubted
that Jesus was resurrected.
00:50:51.88\00:50:55.82
But realizing that Jesus is
standing right there in front
00:50:55.85\00:51:00.19
of him, he declared
those powerful words
00:51:00.22\00:51:04.79
You are my Lord and my God
00:51:04.83\00:51:08.10
To Thomas there is no doubt
now he knows this, You're the
00:51:08.13\00:51:15.10
understanding-the Messiah
is God. Of course unfortunately
00:51:15.14\00:51:22.08
then they did not accept Him.
He came unto His own but His
00:51:22.11\00:51:25.68
own received Him not. But
we know that thousands and
00:51:25.71\00:51:27.98
thousands of Jews did. Accepted
Him as the Messiah, accepted Him
00:51:28.02\00:51:32.72
as their Redeemer and Peter
is one of them. So now we go to
00:51:32.75\00:51:35.89
Peter. In 1 Peter, 2 Peter
actually. Now we go to 2 Peter
00:51:35.92\00:51:42.86
2 Peter chapter 1. We
have Peter now making a
00:51:42.90\00:51:51.97
powerful declaration and I'm
going in 2 Peter. Now we have
00:51:53.34\00:51:59.51
here in 2 Peter
the following words.
00:51:59.55\00:52:01.48
Simon Peter a servant and
an apostle of Jesus Christ to
00:52:03.22\00:52:07.42
them that have obtained like
precious faith with us through
00:52:07.46\00:52:11.46
the righteousness of God
and our Savior Jesus Christ
00:52:11.49\00:52:16.00
At first glance people may
not see it here, but this is a
00:52:17.47\00:52:20.70
declaration by Peter because the
Greek construction of the words
00:52:20.74\00:52:26.24
used here, it is talking about
the same person. When it says
00:52:26.27\00:52:31.08
our God, of God and our Savior
Jesus Christ, it is talking
00:52:31.55\00:52:36.92
about the same individual. Yes.
And you can do research, you can
00:52:36.95\00:52:44.19
go from one scholar to
another and they say the Greek
00:52:44.23\00:52:50.37
the Greek grammatical
construction is talking about
00:52:50.40\00:52:54.27
one person, not two in
this verse. So Peter is saying
00:52:54.30\00:52:59.34
that Jesus Christ is our God,
our Savior and that is Jesus
00:52:59.37\00:53:08.05
Christ. And I could quote to
you some sources but you know
00:53:08.08\00:53:12.79
um there is one Coshmeter,
Winishmeter, Robertson, I mean
00:53:12.82\00:53:17.16
source after source of Greek
scholars say that the divinity
00:53:17.19\00:53:21.20
of Jesus is unquestionable.
So in Jesus Christ is life
00:53:21.23\00:53:26.77
in Him was life. So what
it talks about in Him was life
00:53:26.84\00:53:29.67
in Jesus is life-original,
unborrowed, underived
00:53:29.70\00:53:36.21
because He is God. Amen
And to understand this, that He
00:53:36.24\00:53:43.89
became flesh and dwelt among
us and as Molly described and
00:53:43.92\00:53:48.69
Jill and Pr. Tom and Sister
Shelley, that this very God
00:53:48.72\00:53:52.99
in order to save us, became a
man not giving up His divinity
00:53:53.03\00:53:58.63
but in order to save us
became a man to die for us
00:53:58.67\00:54:01.84
speaks to us volumes of the
wonderful, majestic and supreme
00:54:01.87\00:54:07.31
love of God. Amen. And in
the little time that I have,
00:54:07.38\00:54:12.15
I have to say this
00:54:12.18\00:54:14.22
Only one as divine as the
law because the law of God was
00:54:14.25\00:54:19.72
broken, could really offer the
sacrifice that would meet the
00:54:19.75\00:54:25.93
specifications required to be
able to forgive us for our sins
00:54:25.96\00:54:29.40
So only one as holy as the law
that was broken when man sinned
00:54:29.43\00:54:34.14
could actually save us. So it's
not the life of an angel that
00:54:34.20\00:54:38.01
could make it possible, it's
not the life of a created being
00:54:38.04\00:54:41.08
only one divine being,
the divine being Jesus Christ
00:54:41.11\00:54:45.45
came to die for us. And the
Bible says that God so loved
00:54:45.48\00:54:48.58
the world that He gave His
only begotten Son that whosoever
00:54:48.62\00:54:51.59
believeth in Him should not
perish but have everlasting life
00:54:51.62\00:54:54.72
I join Jill and say if you
have not accepted Jesus Christ
00:54:54.76\00:54:57.49
as your personal
Savior do it today. Amen.
00:54:57.53\00:55:00.33
Thank you so much Bro. Johnny.
You know it is amazing to think
00:55:00.36\00:55:04.63
that He stepped out of eternity
to this earth, that He took on
00:55:04.67\00:55:11.04
our form, that He became
like us in every way and tempted
00:55:11.07\00:55:15.74
like us in every way, just, He
came here to show us the Father
00:55:15.78\00:55:21.32
to pay our ransom. He came here
to redeem us and He went through
00:55:21.35\00:55:30.23
all of the suffering
that, it's just so mind boggling
00:55:30.29\00:55:35.20
when you really concentrate on
that you know, Sister White said
00:55:35.23\00:55:38.27
that if you would spend one
hour daily on the life of Christ
00:55:38.30\00:55:43.54
particularly the closing
chapters it would change you
00:55:43.57\00:55:47.21
and I know for a Camp Meeting
once I did this, Christ covering
00:55:47.24\00:55:51.25
the Sanctuary, on the suffering,
the Passion of Christ and the
00:55:51.28\00:55:55.52
crucifixion and it was
life changing. I need to go back
00:55:55.55\00:55:59.02
and I did it for a while but
I haven't been doing it lately
00:55:59.05\00:56:02.06
So you think of how He paid the
price, He suffered. But if He
00:56:02.09\00:56:07.96
had only suffered and
died He would not be our Savior
00:56:07.96\00:56:12.03
it's because He came up
out of that grave, hallelujah
00:56:12.07\00:56:17.44
So it's the resurrection of
Jesus that really proves that
00:56:17.47\00:56:25.55
He is our Divine
Messiah. And the root of it all
00:56:25.58\00:56:29.45
the reason He did it all,
Johnny quoted the Scripture
00:56:29.48\00:56:33.25
For God so loved the
world. He loves us. I think it's
00:56:33.29\00:56:37.79
incomprehendable, is that a
word, that we can't comprehend
00:56:37.83\00:56:45.00
the breadth and height and depth
of the love that the Lord Jesus
00:56:45.03\00:56:51.17
Christ has for us; God Himself
has for us that He would suffer
00:56:51.21\00:56:55.91
such a horrendous death
that we could be redeemed.
00:56:55.94\00:57:00.08
Amen, and you know I think
of Peter's life before and as I
00:57:00.12\00:57:03.95
said before that he walked
with Jesus the living Word
00:57:03.99\00:57:08.32
for three and a half years,
but it didn't quite prepare him
00:57:08.36\00:57:14.83
to really appreciate Christ
as his Messiah. I mean mentally
00:57:14.86\00:57:19.03
he knew it but it took
the baptism of the Holy Spirit
00:57:19.07\00:57:21.74
and when the Holy Spirit
came into his life then he could
00:57:21.77\00:57:25.67
really understand this
and throughout 1 Peter you see
00:57:25.71\00:57:30.08
that Jesus is woven into every
part of that epistle and it's
00:57:30.15\00:57:35.65
just beautiful. Well I
hope you've enjoyed visiting
00:57:35.68\00:57:39.82

fellowship of the Holy
Spirit will be with you always.
