Well you know when we start
on the lesson we talk about the

theme. Now the theme is the Holy
Spirit working behind the scenes

Now one of the things that was
brought out very early in the

lesson is that the Holy Spirit
is not the central theme of the

Bible. Now that's very important
to communicate because today

there is a movement in the world
and it's not a very new movement

but there's a movement that's
pleading for the Holy Spirit

some people say the Holy Spirit
did that or this is the power

of the Holy Spirit, when in
fact the work of the Holy Spirit

is not to exalt the Holy Spirit
but the work is to exalt Jesus

And so I would like to begin
by saying we don't have the Holy

Spirit, the Holy Spirit has
us. We don't use the Holy Spirit

the Holy Spirit uses us. But
as I combine the central fact

that Jesus is the theme of the
Bible, unmistakably, the Spirit

of God points to the work
that Christ is to accomplish.

The Spirit exalts the person of
Christ. The Spirit empowers us

to live a Christ like life and
although He is not the central

theme, He's the essential agent
of the Bible. Nothing can be

done without the work
and power of the Holy Spirit

Amen, amen. Nothing can be done.
For example, I'll use an organ

illustration. I heard many years
ago, I read a story, matter of

fact it was in the Daily Word
when I used to travel on the
00:06:22.64\00:06:25.21
road with the Heritage Singers
we'd stop at different churches
00:06:25.25\00:06:28.08
and whenever we stopped at the
Baptist Church I'd always get
00:06:28.12\00:06:30.82
the little Daily Word.
Lots of great stories in there
00:06:30.85\00:06:33.86
And I would always pick the
ones theologically in harmony
00:06:33.89\00:06:36.52
with the Bible but this one was
very interesting to me because
00:06:36.56\00:06:40.20
it told a story of a man
who was playing the organ and he
00:06:40.23\00:06:45.90
played it so well that at
the end of his performance
00:06:45.93\00:06:49.44
he received a
resounding standing ovation
00:06:49.47\00:06:52.37
in the concert hall. And people
were clapping and screaming
00:06:52.41\00:06:56.44
his name and yelling and all of
a sudden he heard three knocks
00:06:56.48\00:06:59.95
on the wall behind the organ
and the guy that was pressing
00:07:01.48\00:07:05.62
the bellows and pumping
all the air into the organ said
00:07:05.65\00:07:08.72
"what about me?" "What about me"
Don't forget me. Because without
00:07:08.76\00:07:13.76
the guy behind the scene the
organist would have no ability
00:07:13.80\00:07:18.30
to get the least
sound out of the organ.
00:07:18.33\00:07:19.87
He said, 'what about me?'. In
fact he was the one in all those
00:07:19.90\00:07:23.24
old organs, he's back
there pumping his heart out

stepping on the bellows making
sure the air is flowing through

the organ. In the very same way
the work that we do could never
00:07:28.24\00:07:34.12
be done on our own without
the Holy Spirit behind the scene

It just cannot happen. Matter of
fact I want to begin with John

3 because we talk about the
elusiveness of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is like
air. You know we could, we can't

bottle. Somebody once said
when you go to the Philippines

bring me back some of the
Philippine air. And I remember

somebody, I saw one of our
guys in our pack, they took an
00:07:56.74\00:08:00.38
empty soda bottle and
went like this, swooped it and
00:08:00.41\00:08:03.35
then sealed it real
quickly. What are you doing?
00:08:03.38\00:08:06.45
They said to bring
back some Filipino air.
00:08:06.48\00:08:10.12
Are you serious? How are they
gonna know there's Filipino air
00:08:10.15\00:08:13.86
in that bottle. He said I don't
know but they told me to bring
00:08:13.89\00:08:16.22
some back so he scopped it
through the air and sealed it up
00:08:16.26\00:08:18.96
real quickly. You know we cannot
harness the power of the Holy
00:08:18.99\00:08:23.57
Spirit. The Bible uses a
very powerful illustration
00:08:23.60\00:08:26.47
In John chapter 3 and verse
8 I'll read. He says the wind
00:08:26.50\00:08:32.11
blows where it wishes and
you hear the sound of it but
00:08:32.14\00:08:36.61
cannot tell where it
comes from and where it goes.
00:08:36.64\00:08:40.72
So is everyone who
is born of the Spirit.

I'm always amazed by people and
I could talk of my panel here

I'm always amazed by people that
sometimes say I was born again
00:08:47.49\00:08:50.59
on January 2nd and
they give the year.
00:08:50.63\00:08:53.46
I say, no that's
when you acknowledged it.

But the work
started long before that

Yeah. Matter of fact, in
the Bible when Jesus even said

follow me and I will
make you fishers of men
00:09:01.17\00:09:04.17
Peter followed Jesus a year and
a half after Andrew his brother
00:09:04.21\00:09:09.38
introduced him to Christ. So
from the time Andrew introduced

him. the Spirit began to
work on Peter but we read in the
00:09:12.68\00:09:16.18
Bible, Jesus said to Peter
follow me and the Bible says
00:09:16.22\00:09:19.12
immediately he followed. When
I study the theological context
00:09:19.15\00:09:22.72
between one verse and the
other is a year and a half
00:09:22.76\00:09:25.93
difference. I was amazed by that
And so those who finally respond

to the work of the Holy Spirit,
often happens because family
00:09:29.76\00:09:32.77
members have been praying, Lord
work on the heart of my sister

my brother, friend, my colleague
and then finally they get this

breakthrough and people say,
you know the Lord just spoke
00:09:41.24\00:09:44.15
to me today and we said if
you only know how many years
00:09:44.18\00:09:47.85
I've been praying and the
Lord has been chiseling away
00:09:47.88\00:09:51.22
at that exterior to finally
get to the interior of the heart
00:09:51.25\00:09:54.76
and while the Spirit is not the
essential or the central theme
00:09:54.79\00:10:00.33
of the Bible the Church cannot
work without the Holy Spirit

Amen. Look at Revelation 3:13
And you find this repetitively

in Revelation over and over
again. The book of Revelation is
00:10:08.20\00:10:13.31
the revelation of Jesus but over
and over again you find this

word being said, Revelation
00:10:15.91\00:10:19.38
we find, we're told "he who
has an ear let him hear what the
00:10:20.85\00:10:27.62
Spirit says to the churches.'
00:10:27.66\00:10:30.99
I was startled by a
statement I heard one person say
00:10:31.03\00:10:33.19
They said that you know,
today if the Spirit of God were
00:10:33.23\00:10:37.80
withdrawn from the church many
of the activities that go on
00:10:37.83\00:10:41.67
will continue. And so we have to
be very careful that we are not
00:10:41.70\00:10:47.31
activity driven but
that we are Spirit driven.
00:10:47.34\00:10:50.45
Amen. Because without the Spirit
of God the Pentecost could not
00:10:50.48\00:10:54.25
happen. And Jesus, I'll go
to the timing of the Holy Spirit
00:10:54.28\00:10:58.79
Jesus said to the disciples and
to those who were praying for
00:10:58.82\00:11:02.36
the power to come into their
lives, He said it's all about
00:11:02.39\00:11:05.19
timing. He said I could send you
forth cause I spent three years
00:11:05.23\00:11:08.43
educating you, three and a
half years educating most of you
00:11:08.46\00:11:11.30
but you can't go forward with
education unless you have the
00:11:11.33\00:11:15.20
Spirit of God. And look at Acts
1, verse 8. The Holy Spirit is
00:11:15.24\00:11:19.07
not the central theme but He
is the activation through the
00:11:19.11\00:11:21.88
power that Jesus
made available to them.
00:11:21.91\00:11:24.81
But you shall receive,
what's the next word? power
00:11:26.95\00:11:31.79
when the Holy Spirit has
come upon you and you shall be
00:11:31.82\00:11:36.02
witnesses to me in Jerusalem
and in all Judea and Samaria
00:11:36.06\00:11:40.40
and to the end of the earth.
And so what we have to keep in
00:11:40.43\00:11:43.10
mind here is the
Spirit is the active power.
00:11:43.13\00:11:46.20
So if you preach a sermon with
out the Spirit it might be a
00:11:46.23\00:11:48.50
good message but it has no
active power to convert anybody
00:11:48.54\00:11:51.67
That's why I remember reading
in one of Ellen White's writing
00:11:51.71\00:11:54.08
I think it was Evangelism, she
talked about how there are some
00:11:54.11\00:11:57.65
great orators but they're
devoid of the Spirit of God.

And she also mentions, she
says don't focus on eloquence
00:12:01.15\00:12:05.42
you may even be a person whose
speech is not as it were in
00:12:05.45\00:12:09.99
Moses' case, he
didn't have good speech.
00:12:10.03\00:12:12.16
But he was imbued by the Spirit
of God to work that God saw him
00:12:12.59\00:12:16.60
qualified to do and you
know what? When we recognize our
00:12:16.63\00:12:20.14
lack of qualification, we
recognize our need of the Spirit
00:12:20.17\00:12:24.37
Amen. You see these men on the
day of the Pentecost, it was so
00:12:24.41\00:12:28.34
amazing what God did through
fishermen. Some of them were
00:12:28.38\00:12:31.45
educated but the majority
of them were not. And when they
00:12:31.48\00:12:34.42
spoke the Word of God with
boldness all throughout the
00:12:34.45\00:12:36.52
Book of Acts, it was amazing how
those who were educated received
00:12:36.55\00:12:40.06
them, they said these men
are unlearned and uneducated
00:12:40.09\00:12:43.93
but it was clear
they had been with Jesus.
00:12:43.96\00:12:46.93
To be with Jesus means you've
got to have the active power
00:12:46.96\00:12:50.20
of the Spirit of God in your
life. So, once again to say that
00:12:50.23\00:12:53.57
we cannot do that without the
Spirit of God upon us. He may be
00:12:53.60\00:12:57.57
elusive but we'll know when
His presence is needed. Amen

Like the hurricanes, the tsunami
the tornadoes and the typhoons

and the all those things that
happen that's the work of the
00:13:05.48\00:13:09.28
wind. We can't stop it. We
can see it's powerful work.

Look at Isaiah 61:1. This was
the declaration of Jesus in his
00:13:13.39\00:13:19.86
humanity. But Isaiah the
prophet declares these words
00:13:19.89\00:13:23.03
He says in Isaiah 61:1,The
Spirit of the Lord God is what?
00:13:23.06\00:13:27.67
upon me and then He declares
what this Spirit of God enables
00:13:27.70\00:13:32.27
Him to do to preach, to
heal the broken hearted,
00:13:32.31\00:13:34.74
to proclaim liberty open
the gates of those who are bound
00:13:34.78\00:13:37.21
and all the other things
that follow in verses 2 and 3.
00:13:37.25\00:13:39.61
But He couldn't do it unless
the Spirit of God was upon Him.

So while we have information,

what we need more
than just information is

transformation. That's also the
other work of the Holy Spirit

And so when we talk about
the Spirit behind the scenes

you may see a person and
I'm looking at my own life

I look at where I was and where
I am today, and I would not

and I say this sometimes
humbly I would not have hired me
00:14:01.04\00:14:05.41
years ago to join the Heritage
Singers. I didn't like my own
00:14:05.44\00:14:09.08
voice. But God saw something
and look at all of us. I look
00:14:09.11\00:14:13.72
back at some of the pictures
of Jill when she first got here
00:14:13.75\00:14:16.02
I don't want to embarrass you
Jill, please put any pictures of

her up there, but Jill
has grown as a woman of God
00:14:18.15\00:14:20.89
Molly has grown from her
former beliefs to what God has

anointed her to be
now. Pr. Kenny has grown

Pr. C.A. continues to grow.
We all continue to grow. Why?

Because the Spirit is the active
agent that continues the work

that Jesus began in us.
Amen. And so when we think about

what can we do without
the Spirit of God, we can't do

anything. That's right. We can't
do anything. Matter of fact

let's look at also, the book of
I'm looking here now at the book

of Ephesians. Look at Ephesians
4:30. The Spirit, The elusive

work that we cannot
ignore. Look at Ephesians 4:30
00:14:55.16\00:14:58.89
That's why when we talk about
the work that God has to do

let's not focus on joining a
church, or becoming a part of
00:15:03.83\00:15:07.90
a membership but to be baptized
is one thing, but John even said
00:15:07.94\00:15:12.54
I baptize with water but the
one who comes after, He's gonna
00:15:12.57\00:15:16.68
baptize with the Holy Spirit
or fire. You need that baptism
00:15:16.71\00:15:20.35
for there to be any conversion
any effect in your life.

Ephesians 4:30. The essential
work of the elusive Spirit

And do not grieve the Holy
Spirit of God by whom you were

sealed for the day of redemption
It's shocking to me that if we

speak against Christ we'll be
forgiven but if we sin against

the Holy Spirit the Bible says,
the unpardonable sin we won't

be forgiven. Now while many
people try to define what that

is, let's not try to define it
but in fact I think one of the
00:15:48.18\00:15:52.48
best definitions I've heard is
continual persistent rejection
00:15:52.51\00:15:56.65
that the Spirit of God
does in our lives. Which is what
00:15:56.69\00:15:59.69
happened in the antediluvian
world. Where the Lord says
00:15:59.72\00:16:02.42
My spirit will not always strive
with man. So here's the point

I wanna make before I transition
the Spirit maybe elusive
00:16:07.13\00:16:11.13
but if He's speaking to your
heart and sharing truth with you

and knocking on the door
of your heart to accept Christ

don't say well I've got
other times. Who was it, Agrippa
00:16:17.87\00:16:21.88
said that you almost
persuade me to be a Christian

Was it Festus who said
that? And then Agrippa said,

well I'll call for you
at a more convenient time.

The most convenient time to
respond to the Spirit of God

is when His voice is the loudest
because you can hear that voice

so long like a parent and after
a while you can shut that voice

off. So let's transition
now from the elusiveness of the

Spirit to the Holy

You know I think it's
so interesting just tell em

the Spirit is at once elusive

but also very eminent. Just
a prayer away and we tend to be

comfortable putting our hands on
things, touching things, tasting

things contacting through the
senses. And the Spirit is above

the senses so there is an
elusive quality to it. But then

there's also this very eminent
quality He's as near as a prayer

He's as near as your heart,
He's as near as an open mind

He's right there. When we talk
about creation one of the things

that impresses me, I'm blessed
and impressed by the thought

realization that in
heaven there was no division

no rancor, no jealousy that
there is this perfect working
00:17:22.34\00:17:28.04
together and that of course
is what Christ desires for His

church on earth. No
division, no rancor, no jealousy

no striving for the ascendency.
God the Father, God the Son,

God the Spirit working together.
So the Holy Spirit is present at

creation. The lesson says in the
