Welcome back, 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 before the break we were discussing the Sabbath 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.87 and we referenced Ezekiel chapter 20 verse 12, 00:00:04.90\00:00:07.87 "Also I gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between us, 00:00:07.90\00:00:10.67 so they would know that I the LORD made them holy. " 00:00:10.71\00:00:15.11 We said that the Sabbath is not only a memorial of creation, 00:00:15.14\00:00:17.91 how God takes six days of creation 00:00:17.95\00:00:21.18 and on the seventh He rests and He makes it holy 00:00:21.22\00:00:23.49 but God takes us and re-creates in us the image of God 00:00:23.52\00:00:28.22 and then we rest in that assurance. 00:00:28.26\00:00:31.46 In other words, the Sabbath is not only a memorial 00:00:31.49\00:00:35.20 of what God did in six literal days 00:00:35.23\00:00:38.13 but it's also a memorial of what He is doing in us 00:00:38.20\00:00:41.90 in creating a clean heart 00:00:41.97\00:00:43.54 and renewing the image of God in us. 00:00:43.57\00:00:46.07 So, the Sabbath is not only a sign of creation, 00:00:46.11\00:00:50.45 it's also a sign... a symbol of salvation as well 00:00:50.48\00:00:54.72 and this is the link between the sanctuary and the Sabbath. 00:00:54.75\00:00:59.19 Now, how is the Sabbath portrayed 00:00:59.22\00:01:04.03 in the Ten Commandments? 00:01:04.06\00:01:05.49 Now, the Ten Commandments... 00:01:05.53\00:01:06.90 remember, we noted that the Ten Commandments 00:01:06.93\00:01:09.66 was written by God, 00:01:09.70\00:01:11.07 it was written in stone and was placed by Moses 00:01:11.10\00:01:15.24 inside of the Ark of the Covenant. 00:01:15.27\00:01:17.87 It was the only part of the Bible 00:01:17.91\00:01:20.41 that God wrote with His own finger on tablets of stone. 00:01:20.48\00:01:23.91 He etched it Himself emblazoned with fire, I believe, 00:01:23.95\00:01:27.28 perhaps when it first came from the hand of God to Moses, 00:01:27.32\00:01:30.59 He etched it in stone and the fourth commandment 00:01:30.62\00:01:33.69 is the only commandment 00:01:33.72\00:01:35.59 that begins with the word, "Remember. " 00:01:35.62\00:01:38.73 Now, it's interesting 00:01:38.79\00:01:41.60 because the only commandment that begins with the word 00:01:41.63\00:01:45.10 "Remember" 00:01:45.13\00:01:46.47 is the one that the entire Christian Community, 00:01:46.50\00:01:49.24 it seems like, 00:01:49.27\00:01:50.61 is telling us that we need to forget. 00:01:50.64\00:01:52.84 Now, that's counter intuitive. 00:01:52.87\00:01:54.88 How in the world are we going to tell people 00:01:54.91\00:01:57.71 to forget the Commandment 00:01:57.75\00:01:59.41 that begins with the word, "Remember?" 00:01:59.48\00:02:01.92 The other implication of the word, "Remember" 00:02:01.95\00:02:04.65 is that, this is not the first time that the Sabbath 00:02:04.69\00:02:08.42 was mentioned or even instituted. 00:02:08.49\00:02:11.09 Some people say, "Oh, that's a Jewish day... 00:02:11.13\00:02:12.99 the seventh day is the Jewish Sabbath. " 00:02:13.03\00:02:14.90 Well, quite the contrary. 00:02:14.93\00:02:16.46 Why would God tell them to remember something 00:02:16.50\00:02:19.73 if He had not told them something 00:02:19.77\00:02:22.37 about the Sabbath before? 00:02:22.40\00:02:23.97 In other words, you can't tell someone, 00:02:24.01\00:02:26.37 "Look, remember this" 00:02:26.41\00:02:27.74 if you haven't told them it before. 00:02:27.78\00:02:29.48 The Sabbath was not instituted 00:02:29.51\00:02:32.25 at the time that Moses was given the Ten Commandments, 00:02:32.28\00:02:35.65 the Sabbath pre-existed the Ten Commandments... 00:02:35.68\00:02:40.06 it's at the very beginning of the Bible, 00:02:40.09\00:02:42.72 in the book of Genesis, 00:02:42.76\00:02:44.09 we can see that in the creation week, 00:02:44.13\00:02:46.96 before there was any sin, the Sabbath was there. 00:02:47.00\00:02:50.73 So, let's read the fourth commandment 00:02:50.77\00:02:53.20 which was written with God's own finger 00:02:53.23\00:02:55.64 on tablets of stone, 00:02:55.67\00:02:57.01 Exodus chapter 20 verses 8 through 11, 00:02:57.04\00:02:59.07 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 00:02:59.11\00:03:02.21 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 00:03:02.24\00:03:05.28 but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the LORD your God, 00:03:05.31\00:03:08.58 in it you shall do no work, 00:03:08.62\00:03:10.72 you nor your son nor your daughter, 00:03:10.79\00:03:12.89 nor your male servant nor your female servant 00:03:12.95\00:03:15.06 nor your cattle nor your stranger 00:03:15.09\00:03:16.73 who is within your gates. 00:03:16.76\00:03:18.16 For in six days the LORD made the heavens... 00:03:18.19\00:03:20.86 the earth, the sea and all that is in them, 00:03:20.90\00:03:23.53 and rested the seventh day; 00:03:23.57\00:03:25.33 therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day 00:03:25.37\00:03:28.14 and hallowed it. " 00:03:28.20\00:03:29.54 An important consideration, 00:03:29.57\00:03:32.34 "How do you keep a day holy?" 00:03:32.37\00:03:35.14 According to these verses, the way that you keep a day holy 00:03:35.18\00:03:39.98 is by not working on that day. 00:03:40.02\00:03:42.68 Some people say, "Oh, I keep every day holy. " 00:03:42.72\00:03:45.45 Well, we should endeavor by the grace of God 00:03:45.49\00:03:48.22 to live holy lives 00:03:48.26\00:03:50.06 but in order to keep a day holy, 00:03:50.13\00:03:52.99 the Bible tells us that we need to do no work on that day. 00:03:53.03\00:03:56.20 Now, it's worth mentioning that the Bible also tells us 00:03:56.23\00:03:58.93 in the fourth commandment, that we should be industrious, 00:03:58.97\00:04:01.60 that we should work six days and rest the seventh 00:04:01.64\00:04:05.54 but in order to keep a day holy, 00:04:05.57\00:04:08.28 you need to refrain from secular employment 00:04:08.31\00:04:12.31 on that day. 00:04:12.35\00:04:14.18 That is the way that we keep a day holy. 00:04:14.22\00:04:16.45 The other consideration that we need to make in regards to this, 00:04:16.48\00:04:19.45 is that there are seven entities that are mentioned 00:04:19.49\00:04:22.62 within this phrase... within this... 00:04:22.66\00:04:25.09 this reference here in the fourth commandment, 00:04:25.13\00:04:27.30 "your son, your daughter, your servant... " 00:04:27.33\00:04:29.43 when you go to them, there are seven entities 00:04:29.46\00:04:31.10 that are mentioned there, 00:04:31.13\00:04:32.47 the number seven is prevalent in this 00:04:32.50\00:04:34.50 and the last part of this commandment brings out 00:04:34.57\00:04:36.67 that we are to follow... 00:04:36.71\00:04:38.27 imitate the modeling that God did in the creation week. 00:04:38.31\00:04:42.61 In other words, God creates the earth in six days, 00:04:42.64\00:04:45.11 He rests on the seventh 00:04:45.15\00:04:46.98 and we are to follow in that example 00:04:47.02\00:04:50.89 by resting from our employment on the seventh day Sabbath. 00:04:50.92\00:04:57.63 Now, the question arises, 00:04:57.66\00:04:59.53 "When we mention the seventh-day Sabbath, 00:04:59.56\00:05:02.03 which day is the seventh day?" 00:05:02.06\00:05:04.73 Now, you look in any dictionary and you look up "Saturday" 00:05:04.77\00:05:10.57 what does it say? 00:05:10.61\00:05:12.31 It says that seventh day of the week. 00:05:12.37\00:05:15.38 You look in... well calendars change 00:05:15.41\00:05:18.35 but you look in the typical calendar 00:05:18.38\00:05:20.68 and the seventh day of the week is Saturday 00:05:20.72\00:05:23.05 and the seventh-day Sabbath 00:05:23.08\00:05:25.69 pre-existed the time of calendars 00:05:25.72\00:05:28.92 because you can see that even in the origination of languages, 00:05:28.96\00:05:32.76 in over a 140 languages of the world... 00:05:32.79\00:05:34.90 the word for the seventh day of the week is "Sabbath. " 00:05:34.93\00:05:37.50 What is Saturday in Spanish? 00:05:37.53\00:05:40.80 Sabádo... 00:05:40.84\00:05:42.17 and here we have on the screen, the different languages... 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.37 in the Greek... Sabbaton... meaning Sabbath, 00:05:44.41\00:05:46.21 Spanish... Sabádo... 00:05:46.27\00:05:47.61 Portuguese... Sábado... 00:05:47.64\00:05:48.98 Italian... Sabato... 00:05:49.01\00:05:50.35 you can go down through the list 00:05:50.38\00:05:51.71 in these languages... even in the inception... 00:05:51.75\00:05:54.02 the way that that languages are nuanced, 00:05:54.05\00:05:56.69 the seventh-day Sabbath... Saturday... 00:05:56.72\00:05:59.79 many times literally says, "Sabbath. " 00:05:59.82\00:06:02.89 Now, when we look at this idea 00:06:02.92\00:06:06.09 that the Sabbath is a Jewish institution, 00:06:06.13\00:06:10.17 quite the contrary... 00:06:10.20\00:06:11.77 when you read the Bible, 00:06:11.80\00:06:13.27 you see that the Bible indicates 00:06:13.30\00:06:15.60 that the Sabbath was given for all of man 00:06:15.64\00:06:19.44 indicating all of humanity. 00:06:19.47\00:06:21.94 The Sabbath is not primarily a Jewish institution 00:06:21.98\00:06:26.38 because Adam and Eve were not Jewish, 00:06:26.41\00:06:28.22 the Sabbath was made for all of humanity... 00:06:28.25\00:06:32.05 even as salvation was made for all humanity. 00:06:32.09\00:06:35.86 What about the Apostles? 00:06:35.92\00:06:38.13 Did the Apostles keep the Sabbath? 00:06:38.19\00:06:39.59 Acts chapter 16 verse 13, "And on the Sabbath day, 00:06:39.63\00:06:42.20 we went to the city of the riverside, 00:06:42.26\00:06:44.00 where prayer was customarily made, 00:06:44.03\00:06:45.70 and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there. " 00:06:45.73\00:06:48.24 Some people say that after Jesus arose 00:06:48.27\00:06:51.47 and went to heaven, 00:06:51.51\00:06:52.84 that the Christian church changed the Sabbath day 00:06:52.87\00:06:56.04 from Saturday to Sunday 00:06:56.08\00:06:57.71 but we can see no reference in the book of Acts 00:06:57.75\00:07:00.68 which is after the resurrection of Jesus 00:07:00.72\00:07:02.98 that there was any reference to the Sabbath day 00:07:03.02\00:07:06.65 being changed from the Seventh day of the week 00:07:06.72\00:07:10.33 to the first day of the week. 00:07:10.36\00:07:11.89 Quite the contrary, 00:07:11.93\00:07:13.26 the Apostles continued to keep the Sabbath. 00:07:13.29\00:07:17.20 Some people say that the "Lord's Day" is Sunday 00:07:17.23\00:07:21.30 and here's a reference to the Lord's Day 00:07:21.34\00:07:24.01 in Revelation chapter 1 verse 10, 00:07:24.04\00:07:26.04 "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, 00:07:26.07\00:07:28.11 and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet... " 00:07:28.14\00:07:31.41 and so, people say, "Oh, there it is... 00:07:31.45\00:07:33.05 the Lord's Day... that's Sunday. " 00:07:33.08\00:07:34.52 Well, it's important Friends when we study Scripture 00:07:34.58\00:07:36.99 to let the Bible speak for itself. 00:07:37.02\00:07:39.62 Now, we need to ask ourselves, 00:07:39.65\00:07:41.39 "What did Jesus say the Lord's Day was?" 00:07:41.42\00:07:44.19 Let's go in the gospels, Matthew chapter 12 verse 8, 00:07:44.23\00:07:48.33 "For the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath. " 00:07:48.36\00:07:52.40 So, there is no reference here 00:07:52.43\00:07:54.64 to the Lord's Day being the first day of the week, 00:07:54.67\00:07:58.34 here Jesus said, "Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. " 00:07:58.37\00:08:01.98 The Lord's Day is the Sabbath. 00:08:02.01\00:08:04.88 What about in heaven? 00:08:04.91\00:08:06.65 Isaiah chapter 66 verses 22 and 23, 00:08:06.68\00:08:09.65 "For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I shall make, 00:08:09.68\00:08:12.05 shall remain before me, says the LORD, 00:08:12.22\00:08:14.42 so shall your descendants and your name remain. 00:08:14.46\00:08:17.89 And it shall come to pass, 00:08:17.93\00:08:19.59 that from one new moon to another, 00:08:19.63\00:08:21.96 and from one Sabbath to another, 00:08:22.00\00:08:24.27 all flesh shall come to worship before me, says the LORD." 00:08:24.30\00:08:28.77 In other words, not only is the Sabbath in Genesis... 00:08:28.80\00:08:32.47 is the Sabbath at the heart of the Ten Commandments... 00:08:32.51\00:08:35.74 is the Sabbath all the way through the Christian church 00:08:35.78\00:08:38.75 in the book of Acts, 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.15 but the Bible also indicates that when we get to heaven, 00:08:40.18\00:08:44.59 and we stand with God in heaven, 00:08:44.62\00:08:47.16 we will keep the Sabbath in heaven as well. 00:08:47.19\00:08:50.46 Now, follow me in this line of reasoning. 00:08:50.49\00:08:53.73 If we keep the Sabbath at creation, 00:08:53.76\00:08:56.33 if we keep the Sabbath in the Ten Commandments, 00:08:56.36\00:08:58.27 the Apostles kept the Sabbath 00:08:58.33\00:08:59.67 and we're going to keep the Sabbath in heaven, 00:08:59.70\00:09:01.04 isn't it only logical and reasonable and rational 00:09:01.07\00:09:05.67 to assume that we are to keep the Sabbath right now? 00:09:05.74\00:09:10.45 I believe so. 00:09:10.48\00:09:11.81 I believe that the Bible evidence supports 00:09:11.85\00:09:14.72 that the seventh-day Sabbath is something 00:09:14.78\00:09:17.85 that is to be experienced today 00:09:17.89\00:09:20.89 not only as a sign and a symbol of creation, 00:09:20.92\00:09:25.19 but also, re-creation of our own hearts. 00:09:25.23\00:09:29.43 It is a sign and symbol of the salvation experience 00:09:29.46\00:09:33.60 as illustrated in the sanctuary. 00:09:33.64\00:09:35.64 This is from the Catholic Cardinal, James Gibbons, 00:09:35.67\00:09:39.04 "You may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, 00:09:39.07\00:09:42.41 and you will not find a single line 00:09:42.44\00:09:45.28 authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. 00:09:45.31\00:09:48.08 The Scriptures enforce 00:09:48.12\00:09:49.88 the religious observation of Saturday. " 00:09:49.92\00:09:53.05 The Faith of our Fathers, page 89. 00:09:53.09\00:09:54.92 There are many other references like this 00:09:54.96\00:09:57.63 but Friends, you cannot find 00:09:57.66\00:10:01.26 a single reference in Scripture, 00:10:01.30\00:10:04.87 indicating that there has been a change or a transference 00:10:04.90\00:10:08.67 from Saturday to Sunday. 00:10:08.70\00:10:10.47 The... the notion of the first day of the week being sanctified 00:10:10.51\00:10:16.18 does not come from Scripture but it comes from tradition. 00:10:16.21\00:10:21.35 Now, tradition is an interesting thing 00:10:21.38\00:10:23.89 because sometimes you can do things 00:10:23.92\00:10:26.32 and not recognize the significance of them. 00:10:26.35\00:10:29.62 For instance, Easter... 00:10:29.66\00:10:31.53 what in the world do bunny rabbits and Easter eggs 00:10:31.56\00:10:36.50 have to do with the resurrection? 00:10:36.53\00:10:38.20 It's part of tradition 00:10:38.23\00:10:39.93 and what happened was there was this melding 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.97 between the goddess of Ishtar 00:10:43.00\00:10:45.64 which was the goddess of fertility and Christianity 00:10:45.67\00:10:49.88 and they melded them together 00:10:49.91\00:10:51.55 and today, people practice Easter Eggs and Easter Bunnies 00:10:51.58\00:10:55.78 and meld them with the resurrection of Jesus 00:10:55.82\00:10:58.65 not recognizing that this is part of tradition 00:10:58.69\00:11:01.46 but there is no Biblical support for Easter Eggs 00:11:01.49\00:11:04.16 and bunny rabbits 00:11:04.19\00:11:05.99 and in the same way this idea of pagan sun worship 00:11:06.03\00:11:11.67 fused with Christianity... 00:11:11.73\00:11:14.67 the pagans worshipped the sun on Sunday, 00:11:14.70\00:11:17.01 the Christians worshipped on Saturday 00:11:17.04\00:11:19.27 and through a period of time, Sunday observance 00:11:19.31\00:11:23.11 was made prominent 00:11:23.14\00:11:24.85 and Saturday became something that was obscure 00:11:24.88\00:11:28.42 and was done away with through the centuries 00:11:28.45\00:11:31.99 and this happened years and years ago 00:11:32.02\00:11:35.09 and the question to us today Friends, 00:11:35.12\00:11:38.16 "Are you going to worship and obey God 00:11:38.19\00:11:40.93 or are you going to worship and obey the traditions of men? 00:11:40.96\00:11:45.27 The Bible tells us, "In vain do you worship Me, 00:11:45.30\00:11:48.70 following the traditions of man... " 00:11:48.74\00:11:51.94 and here God is calling us back to the Bible... 00:11:51.97\00:11:55.04 back to Scripture 00:11:55.08\00:11:56.48 and back to the Biblical Sabbath 00:11:56.54\00:11:58.91 because every time we experience the Sabbath every seven days 00:11:58.95\00:12:02.78 as it comes like a holy wave over planet earth 00:12:02.82\00:12:06.35 wherever you may be, 00:12:06.39\00:12:07.72 the Sabbath comes like a holy wave... 00:12:07.76\00:12:09.76 it was instituted at Creation 00:12:09.79\00:12:11.83 and to be a continual reminder to us 00:12:11.86\00:12:14.66 of God's created process 00:12:14.70\00:12:16.87 and when you celebrate the Sabbath, 00:12:16.93\00:12:19.37 it reminds us that God can create the earth 00:12:19.40\00:12:23.44 which was without form and void 00:12:23.47\00:12:25.71 and He does it with a word. 00:12:25.74\00:12:28.28 "Let there be light... and there was light... " 00:12:28.31\00:12:31.95 and you trust in that creative process 00:12:31.98\00:12:34.98 for our own personal salvation 00:12:35.02\00:12:38.49 and even as He took the earth without form and void 00:12:38.52\00:12:41.56 and He formed it and He fills it, 00:12:41.59\00:12:43.73 He takes our lives which are a mess 00:12:43.76\00:12:47.00 and He restores in us the image of God 00:12:47.03\00:12:50.50 and every seventh day we celebrate 00:12:50.53\00:12:53.90 and we rest in that assurance that I can't make myself holy. 00:12:53.94\00:12:59.57 It is God Who makes us holy. 00:12:59.61\00:13:02.88 Won't you surrender to God today? 00:13:02.91\00:13:05.38 Won't you celebrate the Sabbath... 00:13:05.41\00:13:07.85 the seventh day of the week 00:13:07.88\00:13:09.68 and rest in the assurance that God can take you 00:13:09.72\00:13:13.36 and re-create in you the image of God. 00:13:13.39\00:13:16.56 Won't you accept Him today as your Savior 00:13:16.59\00:13:19.73 and Lord of your life? 00:13:19.79\00:13:21.93 I want to encourage you to stay with us 00:13:21.96\00:13:24.00 as we continue our study 00:13:24.03\00:13:26.27 of the sanctuary, salvation and our Savior. 00:13:26.33\00:13:30.61
