Music... 00:00:01.56\00:00:26.49 Welcome to our study 00:00:26.52\00:00:27.86 of the Sanctuary, Salvation and our Savior. 00:00:27.89\00:00:30.99 I want to begin by going to the screen here 00:00:31.03\00:00:34.36 and showing you a picture of a sculpture 00:00:34.40\00:00:37.63 that resides in St. Peter's Basilica there in Rome... 00:00:37.67\00:00:41.97 it's called the Pieta 00:00:42.00\00:00:43.34 and it was made by one of the greatest artists 00:00:43.37\00:00:47.08 during the Renaissance Period known as Michelangelo 00:00:47.14\00:00:52.08 and he created by the age of 24... remarkable genius... 00:00:52.11\00:00:57.05 and it said in the story of the sculpture 00:00:57.09\00:01:00.62 that a person was admiring the sculpture 00:01:00.66\00:01:04.09 and Michelangelo was there 00:01:04.13\00:01:05.79 and he overheard the person that was admiring this sculpture 00:01:05.83\00:01:10.07 say and attribute this work of art to another artist. 00:01:10.10\00:01:14.14 Well, as you can imagine 00:01:14.17\00:01:15.67 that did not sit well with Michelangelo 00:01:15.70\00:01:18.94 and so, he went back to the sculpture 00:01:18.97\00:01:22.11 and then, etched in the marble... in the sculpture 00:01:22.14\00:01:26.51 his own name, 00:01:26.55\00:01:27.88 I have it zoomed in here on the screen 00:01:27.92\00:01:30.55 and you can see there, it says, "Michelangelo. " 00:01:30.59\00:01:34.32 This was so bothersome to... to Michelangelo 00:01:34.39\00:01:38.09 that someone else would attribute his work of art 00:01:38.16\00:01:40.66 to another individual 00:01:40.70\00:01:42.03 that he went back and carved in the sash of the sculpture 00:01:42.06\00:01:48.10 his name 00:01:48.14\00:01:49.74 and not only did he sign it with his name, 00:01:49.77\00:01:52.81 but he says this, 00:01:52.84\00:01:54.18 and you can see it here on the screen, 00:01:54.21\00:01:55.71 "Michelangelo Buonarroti Florentine made it. " 00:01:55.74\00:02:00.35 It could not be more clearer than this, 00:02:00.38\00:02:02.65 Michelangelo wanted to make sure 00:02:02.68\00:02:04.62 that he was the creator of this statue 00:02:04.65\00:02:08.79 and for today's study, I want to look at another instance 00:02:08.82\00:02:14.36 in which an artist greater than Michelangelo 00:02:14.40\00:02:20.34 signed... not in a marble... not in a place 00:02:20.37\00:02:24.44 but in time... His signature. 00:02:24.47\00:02:27.61 We want to go to the very beginning of the Bible, 00:02:27.64\00:02:29.54 Genesis chapter 2 verses 1 through 3, 00:02:29.61\00:02:31.61 "Thus the heavens and the earth 00:02:31.65\00:02:33.75 and all the host of them were finished, 00:02:33.78\00:02:36.18 and on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done 00:02:36.22\00:02:40.29 and He rested on the seventh day 00:02:40.32\00:02:42.42 from all His work which He had done, 00:02:42.46\00:02:44.49 then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it 00:02:44.53\00:02:48.70 because in it, He rested from all His work 00:02:48.73\00:02:51.87 which God had created and made. " 00:02:51.90\00:02:53.70 Here, at the beginning of time... 00:02:53.74\00:02:55.50 the beginning of Creation, 00:02:55.54\00:02:57.24 God creates the earth in six literal, consecutive, 00:02:57.27\00:03:00.91 contiguous 24-hour periods 00:03:00.94\00:03:03.75 and after that time period, 00:03:03.78\00:03:06.51 God does three things on the seventh day. 00:03:06.55\00:03:09.78 He rests... He blesses... and He makes that day holy. 00:03:09.82\00:03:15.26 This is God's masterpiece... this is God's creative process 00:03:15.29\00:03:18.93 and afterwards, He does not sign it in a place, 00:03:18.96\00:03:23.03 He signs it in time, 00:03:23.06\00:03:25.80 the 7th day is a Sabbath... is the Sabbath of the Lord 00:03:25.83\00:03:30.07 and God infused His holiness into time. 00:03:30.11\00:03:34.78 This is His signature... 00:03:34.81\00:03:37.08 after God creates His masterpiece... 00:03:37.11\00:03:39.51 just like Michelangelo created his masterpiece, 00:03:39.55\00:03:42.45 he signed it and etched it in stone... 00:03:42.48\00:03:44.65 God did something greater than Michelangelo. 00:03:44.69\00:03:48.79 He signed it in time as a memorial of creation. 00:03:48.82\00:03:52.89 Now, here's a question, 00:03:52.93\00:03:54.26 "How many Jews were around at the creation?" 00:03:54.30\00:03:59.97 None... 00:04:00.00\00:04:02.27 You know, contrary to popular opinion, 00:04:02.30\00:04:04.01 Adam and Eve were not Jews. 00:04:04.04\00:04:06.68 They were the original human beings, 00:04:06.71\00:04:08.54 the Jewish nation... 00:04:08.61\00:04:09.94 the Israelites did not come until 1,000s of years later 00:04:09.98\00:04:14.58 with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 00:04:14.62\00:04:16.65 Adam and Eve were not Jews and this is prior to sin 00:04:16.69\00:04:20.56 that God signs in time His signature... 00:04:20.62\00:04:24.86 so, like a holy wave every seventh day... 00:04:24.89\00:04:29.10 God's signature... God's holiness comes over us 00:04:29.13\00:04:33.90 and we can be participating in the holiness of God. 00:04:33.94\00:04:38.54 It's interesting when you look at the Hebrew 00:04:38.57\00:04:41.44 in Genesis chapter 2:2 and 3, 00:04:41.48\00:04:43.04 "On the seventh day God finished His work which He had done, 00:04:43.08\00:04:45.81 which is seven words in the Hebrew 00:04:45.85\00:04:48.25 and He rested on the seventh day from all His work 00:04:48.28\00:04:50.75 which He had done... " 00:04:50.79\00:04:52.22 seven words in the Hebrew, 00:04:52.25\00:04:53.66 "so God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it... " 00:04:53.69\00:04:55.96 seven words in the Hebrew... 00:04:55.99\00:04:58.03 the number seven is evident there 00:04:58.06\00:05:00.70 even in the... the nuances of the Hebrew language. 00:05:00.73\00:05:03.70 Seven... seven... seven... 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.37 there's another part of the way that the literary 00:05:06.40\00:05:09.60 structure of the creation story goes, 00:05:09.64\00:05:11.64 you have the first day which is mentioned once... 00:05:11.67\00:05:13.71 you have the second day, mentioned once... 00:05:13.74\00:05:15.68 third day... fourth day... fifth day... sixth day... 00:05:15.71\00:05:18.48 and then you come to the seventh day 00:05:18.51\00:05:20.68 and it says, "The seventh day... 00:05:20.72\00:05:22.85 the seventh day... 00:05:22.88\00:05:24.39 the seventh day. " 00:05:24.42\00:05:25.85 Now, in the Hebrew language, 00:05:25.92\00:05:27.99 when they wanted to emphasize something... 00:05:28.02\00:05:30.43 when they wanted to say that something was important, 00:05:30.46\00:05:32.76 they would repeat it, 00:05:32.79\00:05:34.13 but here God repeats the seventh day 00:05:34.16\00:05:37.30 not just two times but repeats it three times. 00:05:37.33\00:05:42.24 The seventh day... the seventh day... 00:05:42.27\00:05:44.97 the seventh day, 00:05:45.01\00:05:46.34 in other words, this does not diminish the seventh day, 00:05:46.37\00:05:49.61 but places it on a higher platform 00:05:49.64\00:05:52.81 than any of the other days, 00:05:52.85\00:05:54.48 the other days... just mentioned once... 00:05:54.52\00:05:56.15 but the seventh day is mentioned three times. 00:05:56.18\00:05:58.89 The seventh day... 00:05:58.92\00:06:00.26 the seventh day 00:06:00.29\00:06:01.62 the seventh day, 00:06:01.66\00:06:02.99 this is before any Jew... 00:06:03.02\00:06:04.36 this is before the Ceremonial Law of Moses... 00:06:04.39\00:06:05.93 this is before all of these things in Edenic perfection, 00:06:05.96\00:06:09.30 God sets apart the seventh day and makes it holy. 00:06:09.33\00:06:13.87 Now, what does this have to do with the sanctuary? 00:06:13.90\00:06:18.41 Ezekiel chapter 20 verse 12 says, 00:06:18.44\00:06:21.11 "Also, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between us, 00:06:21.14\00:06:25.78 so that they would know 00:06:25.81\00:06:27.62 that I the LORD made them holy. " 00:06:27.68\00:06:30.92 Listen to the significance of this. 00:06:30.99\00:06:34.19 The Bible tells us 00:06:34.22\00:06:35.86 that the Sabbath is not only a memorial of creation, 00:06:35.89\00:06:40.30 but it's also a memorial of redemption and salvation. 00:06:40.33\00:06:44.57 In other words, when we keep the Sabbath, 00:06:44.63\00:06:47.60 we not only memorialize the reality 00:06:47.64\00:06:50.61 that God created the earth in six literal, contiguous, 00:06:50.64\00:06:54.28 consecutive days and rested on the Sabbath, 00:06:54.31\00:06:57.11 and we should do the same, 00:06:57.15\00:06:58.85 but the seventh-day Sabbath also shows us 00:06:58.88\00:07:01.75 how God takes us... and recreates in us the image of God 00:07:01.78\00:07:06.19 and makes us holy and we rest in that assurance. 00:07:06.25\00:07:11.46 In other words, the salvation experience... 00:07:11.49\00:07:15.26 the sanctuary experience 00:07:15.30\00:07:18.43 is also the Sabbath experience. 00:07:18.47\00:07:21.30 You see, in the sanctuary, 00:07:21.37\00:07:24.14 as we noted in our Series and presentations, 00:07:24.17\00:07:27.74 the sanctuary is how God wants to bring us back 00:07:27.78\00:07:30.81 but the Bible tells us in the book of Hebrews, 00:07:30.85\00:07:34.25 that without holiness, no one will see the Lord. 00:07:34.28\00:07:37.95 In other words, the criteria and the condition 00:07:37.99\00:07:41.56 for being able to go back to that face-to-face encounter 00:07:41.59\00:07:44.96 with God just like Adam and Eve is holiness. 00:07:44.99\00:07:48.30 The condition for seeing God is holiness. 00:07:48.33\00:07:51.97 Now, that makes me feel overwhelmed... 00:07:52.00\00:07:55.64 that makes me feel anxious 00:07:55.67\00:07:57.97 because I look at myself and I see anything but holiness 00:07:58.01\00:08:01.94 but when you look in the sanctuary, 00:08:01.98\00:08:03.61 the condition for having that restoration is holiness. 00:08:03.65\00:08:07.95 The condition to a restoration and a relationship with God 00:08:07.98\00:08:12.22 is to be holy 00:08:12.25\00:08:14.92 and that fills many people with anxiety. 00:08:14.96\00:08:18.29 That fills many people with this feeling of inadequacy. 00:08:18.33\00:08:24.33 Have you ever wondered to yourself, 00:08:24.37\00:08:25.97 "So, how am I ever going to make it? 00:08:26.00\00:08:27.54 I'm anything but holy. " 00:08:27.57\00:08:29.04 And so, the Christian experience for some... for many... 00:08:29.07\00:08:32.64 can be one of anxiety and unrest 00:08:32.67\00:08:37.15 but the sanctuary salvation is also connected with the Sabbath 00:08:37.18\00:08:44.69 in terms of our existential experience. 00:08:44.72\00:08:48.29 In other words, the experience of salvation... 00:08:48.32\00:08:52.53 the experience of restoration... 00:08:52.56\00:08:55.83 the experience of the sanctuary... 00:08:55.86\00:08:59.03 the experience where God brings us back 00:08:59.07\00:09:01.60 is not one of unrest... 00:09:01.64\00:09:04.51 it's not one of anxiety... 00:09:04.54\00:09:07.41 quite the contrary... 00:09:07.44\00:09:09.81 it is one of rest. 00:09:09.84\00:09:12.15 It is resting in the reality 00:09:12.18\00:09:15.42 that we can't make ourselves holy, 00:09:15.45\00:09:19.85 rather, it is God who makes us holy. 00:09:19.92\00:09:24.29 Isn't that beautiful? 00:09:24.33\00:09:25.86 Isn't it beautiful that on the seventh day, 00:09:25.89\00:09:28.16 you not only memorialize the fact that God made a day holy, 00:09:28.20\00:09:32.57 but you memorialize the present reality 00:09:32.60\00:09:37.31 that it is God who makes us holy. 00:09:37.34\00:09:40.14 We can't make ourselves holy 00:09:40.18\00:09:41.71 and on the seventh day, 00:09:41.74\00:09:43.35 we rest in the assurance... 00:09:43.38\00:09:46.35 we don't work... 00:09:46.41\00:09:47.75 it's a reminder that we don't work our ways to heaven, 00:09:47.78\00:09:50.32 some people say, "Oh, the Sabbath... 00:09:50.35\00:09:52.19 that's legalism. " 00:09:52.22\00:09:53.56 Quite the contrary, God is telling us to rest... 00:09:53.59\00:09:55.76 not to work... 00:09:55.79\00:09:57.23 and so, on the seventh day, 00:09:57.26\00:09:59.03 we experience the rest that comes in the assurance 00:09:59.09\00:10:03.70 that God makes us holy. 00:10:03.73\00:10:07.10 Even as God took a day and infused His holiness into it, 00:10:07.14\00:10:12.31 God takes us... re-creates the image of God... 00:10:12.34\00:10:15.91 and in the Sabbath experience... is rest. 00:10:15.94\00:10:20.35 We can rest in the assurance 00:10:20.38\00:10:21.92 that it is God who makes us holy. 00:10:21.95\00:10:25.19 So, when we talk about the Sabbath, 00:10:25.22\00:10:28.36 we're talking about the experience the person has 00:10:28.39\00:10:32.56 as they're coming into the Courtyard... 00:10:32.59\00:10:34.76 The experience the person has 00:10:34.80\00:10:37.27 as they come into the Holy Place... 00:10:37.33\00:10:39.10 the experience the person has 00:10:39.13\00:10:41.24 as they come into the Most Holy Place 00:10:41.27\00:10:43.04 is not one of anxiety... 00:10:43.07\00:10:46.07 it is one of rest 00:10:46.14\00:10:48.38 and I want to tell you, 00:10:48.41\00:10:50.31 in my Christian experience, 00:10:50.35\00:10:52.15 I need to be continually reminded of this reality. 00:10:52.18\00:10:56.82 Have you ever been given a gift that is so profound 00:10:56.85\00:11:01.46 and so undeserved that you feel like... 00:11:01.49\00:11:04.16 "Look, I need to do something to earn this. " 00:11:04.19\00:11:06.53 You've been given a gift, you're like, 00:11:06.56\00:11:08.20 "Oh, I need to give at least some sort of contribution... 00:11:08.23\00:11:10.37 here take this... " and the person's like, 00:11:10.40\00:11:11.73 "No, no, no, it's a gift. " 00:11:11.77\00:11:13.10 In other words, if you have to pay for something, 00:11:13.13\00:11:15.27 it's no longer a gift 00:11:15.30\00:11:16.84 and here, we've been given the awesome gift of salvation 00:11:16.87\00:11:20.88 and it's not of works, it is a gift... 00:11:20.91\00:11:23.31 eternal life is a gift... 00:11:23.35\00:11:24.95 and we're given this gift 00:11:24.98\00:11:26.51 and the natural human response is, 00:11:26.55\00:11:28.85 "This is so undeserved, I want to do something... 00:11:28.88\00:11:32.45 I want to... I want to try to earn my way... 00:11:32.49\00:11:34.89 I want to make some sort of contribution 00:11:34.92\00:11:37.26 so I can feel that I earn and deserve this... " 00:11:37.29\00:11:39.66 and God says, "No! 00:11:39.69\00:11:41.03 you don't earn it... you don't work for it... 00:11:41.06\00:11:43.50 you rest in that assurance...
