Music... 00:00:01.36\00:00:25.99 Welcome to another installment of the Sanctuary, Salvation 00:00:26.05\00:00:30.69 and our Savior. 00:00:30.73\00:00:32.29 Now, I'm really excited about today's study 00:00:32.33\00:00:34.56 because in today's lesson, 00:00:34.63\00:00:36.53 we'll be looking at the Ark of the Covenant 00:00:36.56\00:00:40.04 and specifically, the Law of God... 00:00:40.07\00:00:42.77 the Ten Commandments 00:00:42.80\00:00:44.14 which was located inside the chest 00:00:44.17\00:00:46.54 known as the Ark of the covenant. 00:00:46.57\00:00:49.04 Now, on the screen behind me is an LED of a depiction 00:00:49.08\00:00:54.82 of the Shekinah glory of God. 00:00:54.88\00:00:56.75 This was the very presence of God 00:00:56.79\00:00:58.85 that was in the sanctuary... 00:00:58.89\00:01:00.59 the Most Holy Place of the sanctuary, 00:01:00.66\00:01:02.46 and inside this chest was the Ten Commandments 00:01:02.49\00:01:07.63 on which God wrote with His own finger 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.33 on tablets of stone 00:01:10.37\00:01:12.00 and God received or God gave Moses 00:01:12.03\00:01:15.57 the Ten Commandments 00:01:15.60\00:01:16.94 and instructed him to put it inside the Ark of the Covenant. 00:01:16.97\00:01:21.48 Now, there's a lot of contradictions 00:01:21.51\00:01:24.81 that seem to come out of Scripture 00:01:24.85\00:01:28.12 and there's some confusion in the Christian community 00:01:28.15\00:01:30.82 about the Law of God and the Ten Commandments. 00:01:30.85\00:01:33.36 Some individuals say that the Law of God 00:01:33.39\00:01:35.36 was done away at the cross, 00:01:35.39\00:01:36.79 other individuals say 00:01:36.83\00:01:38.59 that if you break one, you break them all, 00:01:38.63\00:01:41.46 which is it? 00:01:41.50\00:01:42.83 Is the Law still binding today 00:01:42.86\00:01:45.00 or has it been done away with at the cross? 00:01:45.03\00:01:48.80 And the solution for this seeming contradiction 00:01:48.87\00:01:52.71 is really that there are two laws in the Bible, 00:01:52.74\00:01:56.54 let's go to our screen here. 00:01:56.58\00:01:57.91 We have on the left side the Ten Commandments 00:01:57.95\00:02:00.95 and on the right side, you have Moses' Ceremonial Law 00:02:00.98\00:02:05.92 and I want to compare and contrast these two, 00:02:05.95\00:02:09.22 let's go to the left-hand column here, 00:02:09.26\00:02:11.49 the Ten Commandments was written by God 00:02:11.53\00:02:13.73 according to Exodus chapter 31 verse 18 00:02:13.76\00:02:15.96 and was written on stone. 00:02:16.00\00:02:18.83 When God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, 00:02:18.87\00:02:22.67 He didn't dictate the Ten Commandments to Moses 00:02:22.70\00:02:26.24 and say, "Hey, I'm about to give you something very important 00:02:26.27\00:02:28.61 I want you to write it down. " 00:02:28.64\00:02:30.95 No, this was so important to God 00:02:31.01\00:02:33.28 that God said, "I'm going to write this Myself" 00:02:33.31\00:02:37.92 and notice the material that God used 00:02:37.95\00:02:41.46 for the Ten Commandments. 00:02:41.49\00:02:42.82 He didn't write it on parchment, 00:02:42.86\00:02:45.49 He didn't write it on a scroll, 00:02:45.53\00:02:48.20 He wrote it in stone. 00:02:48.23\00:02:51.07 Have you ever heard the saying, "Written in stone?" 00:02:51.10\00:02:54.80 Does that indicate that it's a passing nature 00:02:54.84\00:02:58.04 or rather unchangeable? 00:02:58.07\00:02:59.67 Notice the very material that God chose 00:02:59.71\00:03:02.71 to write the Ten Commandments with stone 00:03:02.74\00:03:05.65 signifying that this was of an eternal, unchanging form. 00:03:05.68\00:03:10.72 This was not to change... He wrote it Himself 00:03:10.75\00:03:12.99 on tablets of stone 00:03:13.02\00:03:14.36 and notice the location as we mentioned before, 00:03:14.39\00:03:16.89 Deuteronomy chapter 10 verse 5, 00:03:16.93\00:03:18.39 it was deposited by Moses inside of the Ark. 00:03:18.46\00:03:23.03 The location of this is very important 00:03:23.06\00:03:24.90 because the Ark of the Covenant... 00:03:24.93\00:03:26.74 the Mercy Seat... 00:03:26.77\00:03:28.10 the Shekinah glory... 00:03:28.14\00:03:29.47 the angels hovering over the Shekinah glory 00:03:29.50\00:03:31.81 was the throne of God 00:03:31.84\00:03:33.81 and it was placed inside of the Ark. 00:03:33.84\00:03:36.04 In other words, the very foundation... 00:03:36.08\00:03:38.25 the throne of God... 00:03:38.28\00:03:39.61 was to be the... the Ten Commandments. 00:03:39.68\00:03:41.75 The Ten Commandments was not to be placed in the Courtyard, 00:03:41.78\00:03:44.62 the Ten Commandments was not to be placed in the Holy Place, 00:03:44.65\00:03:47.46 the Ten Commandments was not just to be placed 00:03:47.49\00:03:49.99 in the Most Holy Place in any... any sector of it, 00:03:50.03\00:03:53.19 no, the most sacred entity in the entire sanctuary 00:03:53.23\00:03:56.33 was the Ark of the Covenant 00:03:56.36\00:03:58.07 and the Ark of the Covenant held within it... in the chest 00:03:58.10\00:04:01.77 representing the throne room of God, 00:04:01.80\00:04:03.51 was the Ten Commandments, placed inside of the Ark. 00:04:03.54\00:04:07.91 Now the very location of the Ten Commandments 00:04:07.94\00:04:10.41 indicates its significance and we'll be unpacking that 00:04:10.45\00:04:14.52 as we go in our study. 00:04:14.55\00:04:16.02 Isaiah chapter 42 verse 21, Christ was to magnify the Law 00:04:16.05\00:04:20.22 and make it honorable. 00:04:20.26\00:04:22.29 In other words, 00:04:22.32\00:04:23.66 Jesus did not come to do away with the Ten Commandments, 00:04:23.69\00:04:27.10 but as we see in the Beatitudes, 00:04:27.13\00:04:29.10 Jesus came to expound on the Ten Commandments. 00:04:29.13\00:04:33.34 He said, "You have heard, 'Thou shalt not commit adultery 00:04:33.37\00:04:36.20 but if you commit adultery 00:04:36.24\00:04:37.71 or you think about lust in your own mind... 00:04:37.74\00:04:40.28 in your own heart... 00:04:40.31\00:04:41.64 you have committed adultery in your heart. '" 00:04:41.68\00:04:43.75 He expounds on the Ten Commandments 00:04:43.78\00:04:47.32 so, we look at the Ten Commandments written by God 00:04:47.35\00:04:49.85 written on stone, 00:04:49.88\00:04:51.22 deposited by Moses inside of the Ark, 00:04:51.25\00:04:53.42 Christ was to magnify the Law 00:04:53.46\00:04:55.32 and make it honorable. 00:04:55.36\00:04:57.03 Now, let's take a look at the other Law, 00:04:57.06\00:04:58.83 Moses' Ceremonial Law... 00:04:58.89\00:05:01.20 and we'll compare and contrast these two. 00:05:01.23\00:05:03.47 Let's take a look at our screen once again, 00:05:03.50\00:05:05.67 Moses' Ceremonial Law... 00:05:05.70\00:05:08.60 it was written by Moses, 00:05:08.64\00:05:11.51 God's Law - the Ten Commandments written by God 00:05:11.54\00:05:15.14 this one was written by Moses 00:05:15.18\00:05:16.98 and according to Exodus chapter 24 verse 4, 00:05:17.01\00:05:19.58 it was placed in a book. 00:05:19.61\00:05:22.45 The third part, Deuteronomy chapter 31 verse 26, 00:05:22.48\00:05:26.76 it was deposited by the Levites by the side of the Ark. 00:05:26.79\00:05:32.16 Now, notice the distinction between the two... 00:05:32.19\00:05:34.86 just in terms of location... 00:05:34.93\00:05:36.87 the Ten Commandments was placed inside of the Ark 00:05:36.90\00:05:40.54 while, the Book of Moses which was written by Moses 00:05:40.57\00:05:44.14 and placed inside a book, 00:05:44.17\00:05:45.51 was placed at the side of the Ark. 00:05:45.54\00:05:47.74 So, just by location, 00:05:47.78\00:05:49.74 the Ten Commandments had a higher place. 00:05:49.78\00:05:52.58 It was placed inside the Ark of the Covenant 00:05:52.61\00:05:55.28 while the Book of Moses 00:05:55.32\00:05:57.85 was placed outside of the Ark of the covenant. 00:05:57.89\00:06:01.36 In Deuteronomy chapter 31 verse 26, 00:06:01.39\00:06:04.49 it was to be against the people 00:06:04.53\00:06:07.53 and in Colossians chapter 2 and verse 14, 00:06:07.60\00:06:10.93 it says that you blot... 00:06:10.97\00:06:12.37 they blotted out the handwriting of ordinances 00:06:12.40\00:06:17.34 that was to be against the people. 00:06:17.37\00:06:20.64 In other words, when the Bible talks about the Law of God 00:06:20.68\00:06:24.81 being done away with, 00:06:24.85\00:06:26.18 it's not talking about the Ten Commandments, 00:06:26.21\00:06:29.92 it's talking about Moses' Law. 00:06:29.95\00:06:32.95 It was to be of a passing nature 00:06:32.99\00:06:35.59 and when Jesus died on the cross, 00:06:35.62\00:06:38.13 there's something significant that took place there 00:06:38.16\00:06:41.03 in terms of the temple. 00:06:41.06\00:06:43.63 The temple veil was rent from top to bottom 00:06:43.67\00:06:47.80 indicating a transition from the sacrificial ceremonial feast... 00:06:47.84\00:06:53.11 when Jesus died on the cross as the Passover Lamb, 00:06:53.14\00:06:56.51 we don't have to kill a Lamb today anymore 00:06:56.54\00:06:59.78 and I praise the Lord for that. 00:06:59.81\00:07:01.55 Praise the Lord that Jesus is the Passover... 00:07:01.58\00:07:04.62 Jesus is the Lamb of God 00:07:04.65\00:07:06.22 who takes away the sins of the world 00:07:06.25\00:07:08.42 and all of the ceremonial feasts and festivals 00:07:08.46\00:07:11.43 that pointed forward to Jesus... 00:07:11.46\00:07:13.80 we don't have to keep them anymore. 00:07:13.83\00:07:16.10 These are not a part of the Christian ceremonies and rituals 00:07:16.13\00:07:22.14 we don't have to do these anymore 00:07:22.17\00:07:24.47 because Jesus came as the Lamb of God 00:07:24.51\00:07:27.98 and Moses' Law was nailed to the cross 00:07:28.01\00:07:31.41 but this is not talking about the Ten Commandments, 00:07:31.45\00:07:34.32 this is talking about the Ceremonial Law 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.99 which is of passing nature. 00:07:37.02\00:07:39.52 Now, this is a question that was posed to Billy Graham 00:07:39.55\00:07:43.43 in regards to the Law... 00:07:43.46\00:07:44.89 in regards to some of the confusion that is out there. 00:07:44.93\00:07:47.60 Here's the question to Billy Graham. 00:07:47.63\00:07:49.50 "Some religious people that I know 00:07:49.53\00:07:51.53 tell me that the Ten Commandments 00:07:51.57\00:07:53.54 are part of the Law 00:07:53.57\00:07:54.90 and that they do not apply to us today. 00:07:54.94\00:07:58.07 They say that as Christians, we're free from the Law 00:07:58.11\00:08:02.14 is that right?" 00:08:02.18\00:08:04.48 And here's Billy Graham's answer. 00:08:04.51\00:08:06.21 "No, it is not right 00:08:06.25\00:08:09.12 and I hope that you will not be mislead by these false opinions. 00:08:09.15\00:08:13.05 It is very important that Christians understand 00:08:13.09\00:08:16.29 what the Bible means when it says, 00:08:16.32\00:08:18.16 'they are free from the Law' 00:08:18.19\00:08:19.89 it certainly does not mean that they are free from the 00:08:19.93\00:08:23.70 obligations of the Moral Law and our liberty to sin. 00:08:23.73\00:08:27.44 You see the word 'Law' is used by the New Testament 00:08:27.47\00:08:31.17 in two senses, 00:08:31.21\00:08:33.07 sometimes it refers to the Ceremonial Law 00:08:33.14\00:08:35.91 of the Old Testament 00:08:35.94\00:08:37.28 which is concerned about ritual matters and regulations 00:08:37.31\00:08:39.91 regarding food, drink and things of that kind, 00:08:39.95\00:08:43.95 this Ceremonial Law was of a passing character 00:08:43.99\00:08:47.92 and was done away with when Christ came, 00:08:47.96\00:08:51.33 from this Law, Christians are indeed free 00:08:51.39\00:08:54.66 but the New Testament does also speak of a Moral Law 00:08:54.73\00:08:59.07 which is of a permanent, unchanging character 00:08:59.10\00:09:03.10 and it's summarized in the Ten Commandments. 00:09:03.14\00:09:06.98 This Law sets forth God's demands on human life 00:09:07.01\00:09:10.25 and on man's duties to God and his neighbor 00:09:10.28\00:09:13.42 but it definitely applies to Christians is made clear 00:09:13.45\00:09:16.82 in Romans 13:8 through 10." Billy Graham. 00:09:16.85\00:09:21.66 I agree with this assessment, there are two Laws... 00:09:21.69\00:09:25.16 Moses' Law was of a passing nature 00:09:25.19\00:09:27.73 and was done away with... it was nailed to the cross, 00:09:27.76\00:09:30.10 but the Ten-Commandment Law 00:09:30.13\00:09:32.13 which was placed inside of the Ark 00:09:32.20\00:09:34.17 is of an eternal nature. 00:09:34.20\00:09:36.81 It was not done away with at the cross 00:09:36.84\00:09:39.04 and Billy Graham's assessment here is absolutely correct. 00:09:39.07\00:09:43.75 In James chapter 1 verse 23, the Bible tells us 00:09:43.78\00:09:47.12 that the Law of God is like a mirror. 00:09:47.15\00:09:50.65 I praise the Lord for mirrors. 00:09:50.69\00:09:52.62 A mirror tells the truth. 00:09:52.65\00:09:56.59 Have you ever gone through a day and you think you just look fine 00:09:56.62\00:10:01.03 and then, you look in the mirror 00:10:01.06\00:10:03.87 and then, you're like, 00:10:03.90\00:10:05.23 "Oh, people were looking at me and I look like this?" 00:10:05.27\00:10:09.77 You know, and you don't get mad at the mirror, 00:10:09.80\00:10:12.21 you do an adjustment. 00:10:12.24\00:10:13.58 In other words, the mirror is a moment of self-awareness. 00:10:13.61\00:10:16.98 The mirror shows us our need. 00:10:17.01\00:10:18.85 In the same way, the Law of God is not the solution... 00:10:18.88\00:10:22.78 the Law of God is not like a bar of soap, 00:10:22.82\00:10:25.35 it doesn't clean us up. 00:10:25.42\00:10:27.06 The Law of God shows us our need of a Savior. 00:10:27.09\00:10:31.09 So, when we talk about the Law of God, 00:10:31.13\00:10:33.19 we must remember that we're not saved through the Law... 00:10:33.26\00:10:36.60 the Law is the standard. 00:10:36.63\00:10:39.20 The Law is a transcript of the character of God... 00:10:39.23\00:10:42.27 the Law is like a mirror 00:10:42.30\00:10:44.14 and shows us our need of a Savior. 00:10:44.17\00:10:46.64 As we looked into the mirror of God's perfect righteousness... 00:10:46.68\00:10:50.75 His perfect character... 00:10:50.78\00:10:52.41 we see that we are sinners in need of a Savior. 00:10:52.45\00:10:55.95 So, the Law points to Jesus. 00:10:55.98\00:10:57.82 The Law is not like a bar of soap... 00:10:57.85\00:11:00.32 that is, its purpose is not to clean us up 00:11:00.36\00:11:03.09 but to show us our great need. 00:11:03.12\00:11:06.19 Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commandments. " 00:11:06.26\00:11:10.23 John 14 verse 15. 00:11:10.27\00:11:11.60 "So, God's faithful people keep His Law 00:11:11.63\00:11:14.40 because they love Him... 00:11:14.44\00:11:16.20 not in order to be saved but because they are saved 00:11:16.24\00:11:20.38 by His amazing grace. " 00:11:20.41\00:11:22.74 This is important for us to recognize 00:11:22.78\00:11:25.41 that we're not saved through the Law, 00:11:25.45\00:11:27.82 we're saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone 00:11:27.85\00:11:33.56 and the Law is a transcript of God's character, 00:11:33.59\00:11:37.16 He writes it in our own hearts 00:11:37.19\00:11:38.96 and we love Him because He first loved us. 00:11:38.99\00:11:43.10 It is not the means of salvation... 00:11:43.13\00:11:45.70 it is the response to the love of God... the Law of God is. 00:11:45.73\00:11:50.51 Now, when we look at the Ten commandments, 00:11:50.57\00:11:53.24 we note that the first four 00:11:53.27\00:11:55.91 are in reference to our love to God, 00:11:55.94\00:11:58.35 the last six are in reference to our love to our neighbor. 00:11:58.38\00:12:02.78 In other words, if you love God, you will keep the Sabbath. 00:12:02.82\00:12:07.06 If you love God, you will have no other gods before Him. 00:12:07.09\00:12:11.29 If you love God, you won't worship idols. 00:12:11.33\00:12:13.40 If you love your neighbor, you won't kill him... 00:12:13.43\00:12:16.30 you won't take his wife, 00:12:16.33\00:12:17.73 you won't lie, cheat or steal from him, 00:12:17.77\00:12:19.83 in other words, the Law of God is fulfilled in love 00:12:19.87\00:12:23.67 and God wants to write that Law 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.67 in our own hearts and in our own minds. 00:12:25.74\00:12:28.38 The Law of God is not an imposed extrinsic idea 00:12:28.41\00:12:34.72 of obligation. 00:12:34.75\00:12:36.55 We think of the Law in terms of... 00:12:36.58\00:12:38.35 "You can't... you can't do this, 00:12:38.39\00:12:39.72 you can't do this... you can't do this... " 00:12:39.75\00:12:42.32 but actually the Law of God is written in a way 00:12:42.36\00:12:45.09 that really says, in a form of a promise, 00:12:45.13\00:12:48.20 "You will not... " 00:12:48.26\00:12:50.47 what a different paradigm isn't it? 00:12:50.50\00:12:52.90 in other words, if you love God, 00:12:52.93\00:12:55.27 you will not have any other gods before Him. 00:12:55.30\00:12:58.84 If you love your neighbor, you will not kill him. 00:12:58.87\00:13:02.58 If you love your neighbor, you will not cheat... 00:13:02.61\00:13:06.31 you will not take his wife... 00:13:06.35\00:13:08.72 so the Ten Commandments... 00:13:08.78\00:13:11.09 the fulfilling of the Ten Commandments 00:13:11.12\00:13:13.12 is God writing His Law of love in our own hearts 00:13:13.15\00:13:17.03 and you will not do these things. 00:13:17.09\00:13:20.30 The Ten Commandments, written by God, 00:13:20.33\00:13:23.50 written on stone, 00:13:23.53\00:13:24.97 were placed inside of the Ark of the Covenant. 00:13:25.00\00:13:28.90 The transcript of God's character... 00:13:28.94\00:13:31.04 the very foundation of God's throne... 00:13:31.07\00:13:33.14 was placed inside this chest... 00:13:33.17\00:13:35.31 signify that this was the foundation of God's government. 00:13:35.34\00:13:39.68 We're going to take a short break 00:13:39.71\00:13:41.18 and when we come back, 00:13:41.25\00:13:42.95 we'll continue in our study of the Law of God... 00:13:42.98\00:13:45.72 how God wants to write his Law in our own hearts... 00:13:45.75\00:13:48.16 in our own minds... 00:13:48.19\00:13:49.52 we're going to take a short break 00:13:49.56\00:13:51.26 and when we come back, 00:13:51.29\00:13:52.63 we'll continue in our study of the Law of God 00:13:52.66\00:13:55.40 which is in the Ark of the Covenant. 00:13:55.43\00:13:57.90
