Music... 00:00:01.36\00:00:25.29 Welcome to the Series that we've entitled: 00:00:25.32\00:00:28.29 The Sanctuary, Salvation and our Savior 00:00:28.32\00:00:31.06 where we're studying the relevance of the sanctuary 00:00:31.09\00:00:34.16 to our practical Christian lives. 00:00:34.20\00:00:36.67 Now, I want to begin by showing you this picture 00:00:36.73\00:00:39.50 on the screen 00:00:39.53\00:00:41.04 of a loaf of bread that is over 2,000 years old. 00:00:41.07\00:00:48.11 It was discovered in Italy in an archaeological excavation 00:00:48.14\00:00:53.25 and they found that this piece of bread 00:00:53.28\00:00:56.18 had been preserved by the volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius 00:00:56.22\00:01:02.12 that covered the cities around it 00:01:02.16\00:01:04.69 and this piece of bread... you can find 00:01:04.73\00:01:07.20 in the British Museum today. 00:01:07.23\00:01:10.03 It was preserved by the volcanic ash 00:01:10.07\00:01:12.43 and the British Museum did this interesting episode 00:01:12.47\00:01:17.41 using an Italian Chef 00:01:17.44\00:01:19.81 and it's a video that you can watch... 00:01:19.84\00:01:21.98 it says, "How to make 2,000-year-old bread. " 00:01:22.04\00:01:25.35 What they did was, 00:01:25.38\00:01:26.72 they analyzed the bread that they had discovered 00:01:26.75\00:01:29.28 in this archaeological discovery 00:01:29.35\00:01:31.05 and found the recipe or deciphered the recipe 00:01:31.09\00:01:35.32 and they had this Italian Chef re-make this recipe 00:01:35.39\00:01:40.80 and you can re-make a recipe that is 2,000 years old today. 00:01:40.83\00:01:46.03 Now, bread has been something that has been eaten 00:01:46.10\00:01:48.50 since the days of antiquity 00:01:48.54\00:01:51.11 and the subject of our study today is: 00:01:51.14\00:01:54.84 Bread in the Sanctuary. 00:01:54.88\00:01:56.95 The Table of Shewbread otherwise known as 00:01:56.98\00:01:59.95 the Table of the Presence... 00:01:59.98\00:02:02.05 or the Bread of the Presence 00:02:02.08\00:02:04.09 found in the Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:02:04.12\00:02:07.86 Here is a picture of "Messiah's Mansion" 00:02:07.89\00:02:11.39 which is a group... a ministry of individuals 00:02:11.46\00:02:14.20 that take Moses' sanctuary around the country 00:02:14.23\00:02:16.93 showing the articles of furniture 00:02:16.97\00:02:19.10 and you can see the Table of Shewbread 00:02:19.13\00:02:23.07 there in the Holy Place of the sanctuary 00:02:23.10\00:02:25.84 and you come into the sanctuary... 00:02:25.87\00:02:29.41 you accept Jesus as your Savior at the Altar of Burnt Offering, 00:02:29.44\00:02:33.31 you're baptized at the Laver 00:02:33.35\00:02:35.38 and then Jesus brings you into the Holy Place 00:02:35.45\00:02:38.45 into a walk and relationship with Him 00:02:38.49\00:02:41.42 and there are three articles of furniture in the Holy Place. 00:02:41.46\00:02:45.89 Now, you'll notice in the sanctuary 00:02:45.93\00:02:47.80 as we go to the screen 00:02:47.86\00:02:49.20 that there are two articles of furniture 00:02:49.23\00:02:52.53 by implication and position 00:02:52.57\00:02:54.84 that are to be in a distinct order, 00:02:54.90\00:02:57.54 you come into the sanctuary, 00:02:57.57\00:02:58.97 then you come to the Altar of Burnt Offering 00:02:59.01\00:03:00.94 and second... you come to the Laver, 00:03:00.98\00:03:03.01 you accept Jesus and are baptized 00:03:03.04\00:03:05.01 but in the Holy Place, it's in a triad form 00:03:05.05\00:03:09.62 and there is no explicit way of knowing 00:03:09.65\00:03:14.16 which article of furniture that you come to first. 00:03:14.19\00:03:18.56 In actuality, these three even by position 00:03:18.59\00:03:23.16 imply the reality 00:03:23.20\00:03:25.10 that these three articles of furniture 00:03:25.13\00:03:27.90 are to be continued simultaneously and continuously. 00:03:27.94\00:03:33.54 Each of these articles of furniture 00:03:33.58\00:03:35.64 indicate an important part of growing in Christ. 00:03:35.68\00:03:39.61 Now, the only illustration that I can use 00:03:39.65\00:03:43.65 to help us to understand the essential nature of nutrition 00:03:43.69\00:03:48.02 in our Christian experience is from the birth of a baby. 00:03:48.06\00:03:52.39 Now, this is very vivid in my mind 00:03:52.43\00:03:54.96 because we had a child two years ago, 00:03:55.00\00:03:57.50 and we focused on the birth, 00:03:57.53\00:04:00.14 we had breathing classes and we had our bag ready 00:04:00.17\00:04:03.97 and the contractions started to come... 00:04:04.01\00:04:07.08 it was a very nervous and yet exciting time 00:04:07.11\00:04:10.15 and then, finally, the baby came 00:04:10.18\00:04:13.52 and then, suddenly, it came over our sleep-deprived consciousness 00:04:13.55\00:04:19.69 that this baby needs continuous and a protracted period 00:04:19.72\00:04:27.80 of non-stop care. 00:04:27.83\00:04:29.96 I remember the first time someone told me 00:04:30.00\00:04:33.34 that this baby needs feeding every two hours 00:04:33.37\00:04:36.60 and I told... I asked the nurse, "You mean every two hours 00:04:36.64\00:04:40.34 24 hours around the clock?" 00:04:40.38\00:04:42.24 And they said, "Yes. " 00:04:42.28\00:04:44.08 When a baby is born, it's not as though 00:04:44.11\00:04:45.71 you just take the baby and put it on the shelf 00:04:45.78\00:04:47.55 and say, "Oh, praise God, we had the birth, 00:04:47.62\00:04:49.42 we're just going to move on. " 00:04:49.45\00:04:50.79 No, that baby requires continuous care and nutrition 00:04:50.82\00:04:55.52 and in the same way, after we come to Jesus, 00:04:55.59\00:04:59.06 after we are born again spiritually, 00:04:59.09\00:05:02.66 God brings us into the Holy Place. 00:05:02.70\00:05:06.20 After we're baptized... after we accept Him as Savior, 00:05:06.23\00:05:10.97 He brings into the Holy Place and He provides us bread. 00:05:11.01\00:05:14.08 He provides us food for our souls. 00:05:14.11\00:05:17.65 He provides us nutrition 00:05:17.68\00:05:19.38 and there's something called, "Failure to thrive. " 00:05:19.41\00:05:24.19 In other words, when a baby is born and does not grow 00:05:24.22\00:05:28.99 and does not get proper nutrition, 00:05:29.02\00:05:31.69 they call that, "Failure to thrive" 00:05:31.73\00:05:34.36 and I believe that there are many Christians today 00:05:34.40\00:05:37.00 that unfortunately have been born again 00:05:37.03\00:05:39.73 but because they're not feeding the nutrition 00:05:39.77\00:05:44.41 that has been provided... 00:05:44.44\00:05:46.07 feeding on the nutrition that God has provided for them, 00:05:46.11\00:05:49.01 that they are failing to thrive in their Christian experience. 00:05:49.04\00:05:54.45 Now, when we go to the Courtyard, 00:05:54.48\00:05:58.09 as we noted earlier, 00:05:58.12\00:06:00.32 you were born again in the Courtyard, 00:06:00.36\00:06:02.42 you become alive in Christ 00:06:02.46\00:06:05.09 and then God takes you by the hand 00:06:05.13\00:06:07.10 and says, "Walk with me... grow with me... " 00:06:07.13\00:06:08.73 He takes you into the Holy Place 00:06:08.76\00:06:10.10 where you grow as a Christian 00:06:10.13\00:06:12.13 and you thrive after you become alive. 00:06:12.17\00:06:15.04 In the Courtyard, you become alive, 00:06:15.07\00:06:17.87 in the Holy Place, 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.47 you stay alive after you've become alive, 00:06:19.51\00:06:23.35 both are essential to the Christian experience 00:06:23.38\00:06:25.51 and in the Holy Place, 00:06:25.55\00:06:27.42 there are three articles of furniture, 00:06:27.45\00:06:29.72 you have the Table of Shewbread, the Altar of Incense 00:06:29.75\00:06:33.22 and the Candlesticks 00:06:33.25\00:06:35.16 and these three represent 00:06:35.19\00:06:37.13 an important part of Christian growth. 00:06:37.16\00:06:40.20 We feed on the Word through Bible Study, 00:06:40.23\00:06:43.16 we participate in the Altar of Incense through prayers 00:06:43.20\00:06:47.67 and the candlesticks represent 00:06:47.70\00:06:50.31 our witness and service for Jesus 00:06:50.34\00:06:52.87 and these three parts are essential 00:06:52.91\00:06:55.41 for our Christian experience. 00:06:55.44\00:06:57.11 We need to feed on the Word, 00:06:57.15\00:06:58.75 we need to pray and we need to witness as well. 00:06:58.78\00:07:02.38 There's another way of looking at this Table of Shewbread... 00:07:02.45\00:07:04.99 you Feed... Read... 00:07:05.05\00:07:07.09 Altar of Incense... Air... Prayer... 00:07:07.12\00:07:10.19 and the Candlestick... Fitness... Witness... 00:07:10.23\00:07:13.60 that's an easy way of remembering it. 00:07:13.63\00:07:15.46 Now, here's one clue, 00:07:15.50\00:07:18.17 one hint... one tip that you can know 00:07:18.20\00:07:21.34 if you are a born-again Christian 00:07:21.40\00:07:24.51 and you're noticing that your spiritual experience... 00:07:24.54\00:07:29.21 your walk with Jesus seems to be dying, 00:07:29.24\00:07:32.41 or you're not thriving as a Christian 00:07:32.45\00:07:35.55 or you've lost your first love, 00:07:35.58\00:07:37.49 here's an important diagnostic you can take... 00:07:37.52\00:07:40.42 a self-diagnosis... 00:07:40.46\00:07:41.79 ask yourself, "How's my prayer life? 00:07:41.82\00:07:44.29 Have I been spending time feeding on the Word? 00:07:44.33\00:07:48.00 And have I been sharing the love of Jesus Christ with others?" 00:07:48.03\00:07:52.30 And what you'll find is that, one of those areas 00:07:52.33\00:07:57.71 you will... at least one of those areas 00:07:57.74\00:08:00.78 have diminished in your experience. 00:08:00.81\00:08:03.78 Now, all of us know that if we do not eat regularly... 00:08:03.81\00:08:07.52 if we don't breathe... especially 00:08:07.58\00:08:10.02 and if we don't exercise, 00:08:10.05\00:08:12.05 there is a dramatic decrease or cessation of physical life, 00:08:12.09\00:08:17.19 in the same way, 00:08:17.23\00:08:18.56 when Jesus brings us into the world spiritually 00:08:18.59\00:08:22.60 through the born-again experience, 00:08:22.63\00:08:24.20 He brings us into the Holy Place to sustain us 00:08:24.23\00:08:27.74 in our walk with Jesus. 00:08:27.80\00:08:29.64 Read... Feed... 00:08:29.67\00:08:31.51 Prayer... Air... 00:08:31.57\00:08:33.34 Witness... Fitness... 00:08:33.38\00:08:35.24 now, these are all here 00:08:35.28\00:08:37.05 because of the provisions of Jesus Christ 00:08:37.08\00:08:39.15 they're not meritorious, 00:08:39.18\00:08:40.52 they don't earn our way to heaven, 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.12 but they're provided for us to keep us alive 00:08:42.15\00:08:45.72 after we have become alive. 00:08:45.75\00:08:48.02 Notice what Jesus said in Matthew chapter 4 verse 4, 00:08:48.09\00:08:51.29 "But He answered and said, 'It is written, 00:08:51.33\00:08:53.90 man shall not live by bread alone, 00:08:53.93\00:08:57.77 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. '" 00:08:57.80\00:09:02.80 Here Jesus uses "bread" as a metaphor 00:09:02.84\00:09:05.87 in comparison... in an analogous way 00:09:05.91\00:09:08.51 to compare it with the Word of God, 00:09:08.54\00:09:11.08 He says, "Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:09:11.11\00:09:12.75 but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. " 00:09:12.78\00:09:16.69 In other words, 00:09:16.72\00:09:18.05 the same way we need food for physical sustenance, 00:09:18.09\00:09:22.29 we need the Word of God for spiritual sustenance as well. 00:09:22.32\00:09:27.50 Now, this was not a new quote that Jesus made 00:09:27.53\00:09:33.03 here in the New Testament, 00:09:33.07\00:09:34.47 this is actually a direct reference to the Old Testament. 00:09:34.50\00:09:39.14 Remember, the New Testament was not written in the time of Jesus 00:09:39.17\00:09:43.38 it was written after He went to heaven... 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.71 Jesus here is citing actually the book of Deuteronomy... 00:09:45.75\00:09:49.02 Deuteronomy chapter 8 verse 3, 00:09:49.05\00:09:50.62 He humbled you, causing you to hunger 00:09:50.65\00:09:53.62 and then feeding you with manna, 00:09:53.66\00:09:56.56 which neither you nor your ancestors had known, 00:09:56.59\00:10:01.13 to teach you that man does not live on bread alone 00:10:01.16\00:10:05.63 but by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD." 00:10:05.67\00:10:11.74 Jesus in Matthew chapter 4 verse 4 00:10:11.77\00:10:14.78 is quoting the Old Testament. 00:10:14.81\00:10:18.25 He's quoting from Deuteronomy chapter 8 verse 3 00:10:18.28\00:10:22.18 and the bread that is here 00:10:22.22\00:10:24.82 in context that's being talked about 00:10:24.85\00:10:28.06 is none other than manna. 00:10:28.09\00:10:30.89 In other words, "Man shall not live by bread alone 00:10:30.93\00:10:33.70 but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God... " 00:10:33.76\00:10:36.00 is not talking about the loaf of bread 00:10:36.03\00:10:38.43 that you get in your local store in the book of Deuteronomy, 00:10:38.47\00:10:41.20 this is talking about heaven's bread. 00:10:41.24\00:10:43.44 The bread that fell from heaven 00:10:43.47\00:10:46.37 that the Israelites called manna. 00:10:46.41\00:10:49.24 Now, when the Israelites were in the wilderness... 00:10:49.28\00:10:53.18 this is a miracle story because during their 40 years 00:10:53.21\00:10:57.09 from Egypt to Canaan... 00:10:57.15\00:10:59.59 every day during that journey in their experience 00:10:59.62\00:11:05.43 from bondage to liberation 00:11:05.46\00:11:08.36 was sustained by heaven's bread... 00:11:08.43\00:11:11.50 heaven's manna that fell on the earth. 00:11:11.53\00:11:14.54 It's interesting because manna literally in the Hebrew 00:11:14.57\00:11:18.94 means, "What is it?" 00:11:18.97\00:11:21.38 That's because the Israelites... the first day they got manna, 00:11:21.41\00:11:25.45 they went outside and they saw this stuff on the ground 00:11:25.48\00:11:28.08 and they said, "What is it?" 00:11:28.12\00:11:29.82 And evidently that name stuck 00:11:29.85\00:11:31.45 because manna literally means, "What is it?" 00:11:31.52\00:11:34.62 And it was heaven's bread that came from heaven 00:11:34.66\00:11:37.69 in Exodus chapter 16 verse 15, "When the Israelites saw it, 00:11:37.73\00:11:41.10 they said to each other... " here's the reference, 00:11:41.13\00:11:42.83 "What is it? Manna... 00:11:42.86\00:11:44.67 for they did not know what it was. " 00:11:44.70\00:11:46.77 And Moses said to them, 00:11:46.80\00:11:48.27 "It is... " and notice what he says here, 00:11:48.30\00:11:50.61 "It is the bread the LORD has given you to eat. " 00:11:50.64\00:11:56.41 Now, remember what the Bible says in Deuteronomy chapter 8, 00:11:56.44\00:12:00.42 it said, that God had given them manna 00:12:00.45\00:12:03.99 to teach them that man shall not live by bread alone 00:12:04.02\00:12:07.12 but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. 00:12:07.16\00:12:10.19 In other words, the manna was a living illustration 00:12:10.23\00:12:16.83 of their dependency not just on physical food 00:12:16.87\00:12:21.34 but of their need and dependence 00:12:21.40\00:12:24.41 on spiritual sustenance and food. 00:12:24.44\00:12:27.38 Now, the way that manna fell is very significant 00:12:27.41\00:12:31.98 because the Bible indicates 00:12:32.01\00:12:34.52 that it's actually bread from heaven... 00:12:34.55\00:12:36.45 in Psalm chapter 78 verse 24, "Food from heaven... " 00:12:36.48\00:12:40.02 Psalm 78 verse 25 said, "It's the bread of angels... " 00:12:40.06\00:12:43.53 and the color of it according to Exodus was white 00:12:43.56\00:12:46.39 and it tasted like wafers made with honey. 00:12:46.43\00:12:50.87 Now, when I get to heaven, 00:12:50.90\00:12:52.23 I want to taste what manna is like 00:12:52.27\00:12:55.10 and this provided all of the nutrition for the Israelites 00:12:55.14\00:12:59.31 to go from Egypt to Canaan. 00:12:59.34\00:13:01.64 Now, you and I 00:13:01.68\00:13:03.01 are on a journey 00:13:03.04\00:13:04.38 from bondage to heavenly Canaan 00:13:04.41\00:13:09.12 and the way that God will sustain us 00:13:09.15\00:13:12.12 in our journey to heavenly Canaan 00:13:12.15\00:13:15.06 is by giving us our daily bread 00:13:15.09\00:13:19.86 and I'm not talking about physical food 00:13:19.89\00:13:23.26 the Bible is talking about spiritual food 00:13:23.30\00:13:26.94 that God provides for us each and every day. 00:13:26.97\00:13:30.54 Man shall not live by bread alone, 00:13:30.61\00:13:32.51 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:13:32.54\00:13:37.95 In our journey... in our Christian experience, 00:13:37.98\00:13:40.22 God has provided everything in His Word 00:13:40.25\00:13:42.68 for our spiritual sustenance. 00:13:42.75\00:13:45.45 We're going to take a brief break 00:13:45.49\00:13:47.26 and when we come back, 00:13:47.29\00:13:48.62 we will continue in our study of manna 00:13:48.66\00:13:51.33 and how we are not to live by bread alone 00:13:51.36\00:13:54.03 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:13:54.06\00:13:57.63
